The Best Car Coolers and Portable Refrigerators for Your Next Road Trip

Chris Chase

Whether you’re striking out on a two-week camping trip or heading to the beach for a picnic, no outdoor adventure is complete without food and drink. That means you’ll need a cooler to keep your beverages chilled and food fresh. But even the best coolers can only keep things cold for so long. Eventually, your freezer packs will thaw out, and you’ll have to stock up on ice from the nearest gas station or convenience store.

What if there was a better way to keep your consumables cold without worrying about ice melting? Well, there is, and that’s by using an electric car cooler. These handy devices have a lot in common with the cooler you probably already have packed away with your camping gear. The difference is you can plug an electric cooler into your vehicle’s 12-volt power outlet, which will keep the things inside cool without the aid of ice. You can even use some of the more powerful electric coolers to make ice while you’re on the road or at the campground.

Some car coolers can do double duty and keep food warm, too, so you can be everyone’s best friend when you arrive at a fall picnic or backyard potluck with piping hot chili. You’ll find a lot of variety in the car cooler marketplace in terms of functionality and price.

For more information on the best car coolers and portable refrigerators for your car, refer to our table of contents.

If you are in the market for a feature-rich portable fridge, look no further than the BougeRV CRPRO25. This 26-quart fridge/freezer is an ideal companion for your next road trip. It comes with an adjustable temperature setting that lets you set the temperature anywhere from -8 degrees Fahrenheit to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This means you can use it is a freezer to keep meat and ice cream frozen, or you can use it as a fridge to keep your drinks cool.

Designed to operate quietly, the BougeRV CRPRO25 is outfitted with a user-friendly smart panel to make temperature adjustments, bright interior light, exterior bottle opener, and four tie-down points. But what really sets it apart is a multi-functional storage box which has room for a portable power bank. With the portable power bank installed, you can keep the CRPRO25 running without plugging it into a power source.

Speaking of power, the BougeRV CRPRO25 consumes 45W in MAX mode and just 36W in ECO mode. It also boasts a three-level car battery protection system to help protect your car battery from draining when the voltage is low.

You can save 30% off of a BougeRV CRPRO25 is you use the code BJ30 at checkout.

None of the coolers on our list illustrate the phrase “you get what you pay for” better than this option from ICECO. You’ll pay more for this product, but for your money, you get a cooler that promises better performance and longevity than many other portable powered coolers.

This is a versatile cooler, boasting the flexibility to run on 12- or 24-volt DC current or 110- or 240-volt AC household power. While many of the other coolers we selected for our list are capable of keeping food and drinks chilled or frozen, this recommendation can be set to maintain a temperature anywhere between -7 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. That means you can easily chill or freeze food that’s at room temperature when you load it up without space-hogging ice or freezer packs.

ICECO equips this cooler with a Secop compressor for fast cooling. You can also run this cooler in an eco mode that consumes less electricity and prolongs run time when you’re powering it with a battery.

With your purchase, ICECO includes an insulated protective bag and a 12-foot-long DC power cable. The compressor is warrantied for five years, and everything else is covered by a one-year warranty.

While its price won’t be suited to every budget, Setpower's option gets a nod from us for its 53-quart capacity, the most generous of any of the items in our list of the best car coolers.

To give you an idea of its size, Setpower says you can pack 70 soda cans, 42 pint-sized water bottles, or 12 wine bottles in the AJ50 variant. A wire storage basket lets you store delicate food separately from hard/heavy items. You can use this recommendation as a fridge/freezer as well as a cooler. Setpower says the compressor is powerful enough to chill or freeze food and drink from room temperature, and you can set the temperature to any point between 0 and 50 degrees F.

A 38-pound weight means you’ll get a bit of a workout moving this cooler around, but it has robust-looking carry handles at either end. Setpower sells this particular cooler with DC (12/24-volt) and AC (110/240-volt) power cables, so you can use this portable cooler at home just as easily as you would in your car or camper. An auto shut-off system with three settings lets you protect your vehicle’s battery when running this cooler with the engine turned off.

Here's our recommendation for a basic cooler if you're shopping on a budget. While the first few items in our list are basically portable fridge-freezer units, this Ivation product is a simpler electric car cooler that will keep your food and drinks cool but not frozen.

This is a dual-power cooler that you can run on a 12-volt DC power source—like your vehicle’s cigarette lighter—or on 110-volt AC current with the included adapter for household outlets. Both adapters stow in convenient compartments built into the lid.

Ivation says this device will keep drinks as cool as 40 degrees F and can also keep food warm up to 130 degrees F. However, those are its only settings; it can’t be set to any temperatures in between those points. The company also says this option will work best if you load it with drinks or food that has already been chilled or warmed up. As some buyers have noted, it will take a long time to cool or heat items from ambient temperature.

While the cooler’s capacity is relatively modest, Ivation says it’s large enough to accommodate 2-liter soda bottles. This cooler weighs 10.6 pounds, so it’s relatively easy to move around even when loaded.

travel car fridge

Designed to look like an old-fashioned home refrigerator, AstroAI’s minifridge is tiny, measuring 10 inches high by 9.45 inches deep and 6.9 inches wide. Its 4-liter internal capacity is just large enough to accommodate six regular-size soda cans, and a weight of fewer than five pounds empty allows for easy transportation.

AstroAI says it designed this little fridge for more than just keeping drinks cold. It’s also ideal for storing cosmetics and skin care products, breast milk, and other items that are perishable at room temperature.

This cooler will take items from room temperature down to 37 degrees F in three hours, and you can also use it to keep food or drink hot at up to 150 degrees F. The company makes it clear this product is not designed to warm things up from ambient temperatures but claims your items will stay warm for hours after the device is turned off. Actual cooling and warming performance will vary somewhat depending on the ambient temperature.

This minifridge ships with a 12-volt DC cigarette lighter cable for use in your vehicle and a 110-volt AC adapter, so you can also plug it in at home or in your office.

travel car fridge

This option from Wagan is another lightweight cooler—it weighs a scant 8.7 pounds empty. Once loaded with food and drink it will obviously be heavier, but the included shoulder strap leaves your hands free for carrying other items.

This cooler’s design lends itself well to serving as a central console in a vehicle’s back seat and includes cupholders so your passengers can enjoy drinks on the road. Its capacity is 14 liters. While it’s advertised as a 12-volt cooler, Wagan sells an optional AC adapter that lets you plug it into a household power outlet. The standard 9-foot-long DC power cable connects to your vehicle’s cigarette lighter.

As with the Ivation cooler discussed above, this Wagan unit works best to keep your items cold or warm but is not designed to efficiently chill or heat your food and drink from room temperature. The company says this cooler's temperature range is 32 degrees F (the freezing point) to 140 degrees F. You can’t select any temperatures between those two points, but changing between cooling and warming modes is as simple as flipping a switch. Simple green and red LED indicators tell you at a glance which mode it is set to.

travel car fridge

The 36-liter Bodega car fridge is pricy, but it's less expensive than our Editor's Pick, yet it has four more liters capacity.

To put this model's capacity in perspective, Bodega claims it will hold 41 cans of cola, 21 bottles of water, or ( somewhat humorously) "13 bottles of red wine." The compressor-chilled cooler will operate on 12 volts from your car's cigarette lighter or power port, but it can also be powered by 120-volt or 240-volt current from a wall outlet. The refrigerated compartment includes a divider and independent temperature control for both areas via a phone app. According to the manufacturer, the contents can be chilled down to 4 degrees Fahrenheit. Wheels, interior lighting, and a drain hole are thoughtful touches.

Bodega offers models with a capacity greater than 36 liters which are correspondingly more expensive. The larger 53-liter Bodega seems to be the most widely available.

There were complaints from a few users; most cited poorly-written instructions. Others found that the unit was slow to cool when full. However, most small-capacity refrigerators perform better when maintaining the temperature of pre-chilled contents rather than chilling warm items, in all the Bodega clocked in with a respectable 85% positive customer rating.

travel car fridge

The 48-quart Koozam K-box electric cooler is one of the larger models reviewed here. It’s a thermoelectric cooler, which will keep pre-chilled items cold but won’t bring warm items down to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Like other similar coolers, it can maintain a warm environment too. A removable interior divider helps keep contents under control.

This model has built-in 6-foot power cords that connect with either 12-volt (cigarette lighter style) or 120-volt supplies. The K-Box weighs 17.1 pounds empty; there are wheels, but given their small size, we think they’re for positioning the cooler rather than rolling it over long distances.

Gripes about slow cooling and difficult maneuverability marred the otherwise favorable user experiences. The K-Box still managed 81% positive reviews. This model is markedly less expensive than the 53-quart Setpower AJ50 reviewed above, which earned an exemplary 91% positive rating.

If you want a cooler that can efficiently chill or freeze food and drink from room temperature, then you should choose one with a compressor, such as one of the products we placed at the top of our list.

A cooler with a compressor is effectively a portable fridge or freezer with proven and effective technology, but you won’t get it for cheap. The compressor itself is heavy, so any cooler equipped with one will be more difficult for you to pick up and move around.

A thermoelectric cooler is a simpler, less-expensive device that uses a scientific phenomenon called the Peltier effect to either generate heat, or absorb it and thereby provide a cooling effect. Thermoelectric cooling is less efficient than a compressor-based system, so it won’t do as good a job keeping your food chilled as a compressor-type cooler will. However, a thermoelectric cooler will be much less expensive than one with a compressor.

Yes, but whether you need to depends on the type of cooler you buy. If you choose one with a compressor-based cooling system, you won’t need to pack your food and drink in ice as these coolers are designed to be effective at chilling things down and keeping them at a set temperature.

However, if you buy a thermoelectric cooler, we recommend chilling or freezing your food and drinks ahead of time and then packing it in the cooler and turning it on. You can also pack your items in ice and the thermoelectric cooler function will keep the ice frozen for longer than in a regular cooler.

You can run an electric cooler plugged into your vehicle for as long as you want, so long as the vehicle is running, which keeps the battery charged.

When your vehicle is off, be careful not to leave the cooler running for too long because it will drain the battery after two to three hours, which can leave you stranded as the battery may not have enough power left in it to start the engine.

As far as your cooler is concerned, there isn’t much difference. All of these coolers in our list are designed to operate on 12-volt automotive DC power. The ones that can be plugged into a household outlet have adapters, like the one you use to plug a laptop computer into the wall to convert your home’s 110-volt AC power to the DC current the cooler requires.

Cars do not have cigarette lighters anymore. Need coolers with USB for keeping them cold

David Traver Adolphus

Very few cars have lighters (although there are a few where it's still an option), but every car we've seen has the 12V port where a lighter once went, and most car accessories are powered with a 12V adaptor. The USB ports in most cars don't have enough power to run something like a cooler. USB-C is capable of much higher power delivery, but it hasn't been widely adopted in vehicles yet.

"Portable refrigerators are another new-ish product that can make road and camping trips more comfortable and convenient," says Dan DiClerico , the director of the Home Improvement & Outdoor Lab at the Good Housekeeping Institute . Some models have a power cord that plugs into a standard 110/120V AC outlet, meaning you’ll need a portable generator if you want to take them on the road, while others use 12-volt DC power that can be plugged into your car’s lighter. There are also battery-powered portable refrigerators.

But whichever option you choose, don’t expect the same cooling power as the fridge in your kitchen. "Typical fridges you'd find in your kitchen today have better insulation and sealing and use more efficient compressor motors and refrigerants," says Rachel Rothman , the GH Institute's chief technologist and executive technical director.

You can find more information on what to look for when shopping for a portable refrigerator at the bottom of this guide. Interested in more cool content? Check out our reviews of the best backpack coolers , adult lunchboxes and standard coolers .

With two separate spaces for storing food at two different temperatures and a whopping 63-quart capacity, this portable refrigerator from ICECO is a great option for avid campers, beachgoers, picnickers and road-trippers (as long as you have a dedicated power source, of course.) It also comes with two wire baskets that fit within the two compartments, as well as an insulated cover and an interior light. If you choose to power the cooler from your car battery, it has a car battery-protection mode that helps prevent it from completely draining the battery.

"The impressive cooling range of the compressor is more in line with what we see with full-size refrigerators and the generous five-year warranty shows how the brand stands by its durability and design," says DiClerico. The size does come at a cost though (aside from the steep price tag): At 65 pounds, it is rather heavy and might require two people to carry.

Large portable refrigerators and coolers can get really expensive, but this pick from Coleman is at a great price for its size. According to the brand, it has the capacity to hold 44 cans and its versatile design allows you to use it as a chest, or flip it upright to use as a refrigerator . The cord for the 12V plug in is 8 feet long, so it can reach the middle or back seat of your car, depending on the make and model.

Note that while it does chill the contents, it's dependent on the ambient temperature around the cooler. It can only chill the contents 40° lower than the outside temperature. So keep in mind that the fridge might not reach food-safety standards, depending on the outside temperature. Conversely, it can also be used to keep food warm.

All of the picks on this list — as well as most of the portable refrigerators on the market — run using DC or AC cords, which means they need to be plugged in and stay plugged in. But this 50-quart pick from SetPower can also be powered by a rechargeable battery, so you have the freedom to venture away from outlets (for a certain amount of time, at least), making it a good portable refrigerator for camping.

According to the brand, the battery can keep the refrigerator running for up to eight hours, under ideal conditions. "Today’s lithium-ion batteries have gotten so much better in terms of charge and run times, and they also last much longer than earlier rechargeable batteries," says DiClerico. The cooler also has car battery protection, so you can charge the battery without worrying about draining your car's and leaving you stranded in need of a jump.

There's also a spot to wirelessly charge your phone on top and a USB port, though note that charging any other devices will affect the overall battery life of the refrigerator. It also does take a while to fully charge the battery, so make sure to plug it in overnight to it give it ample time to charge. Another big plus: The telescoping handle and durable six-inch wheels mean you can roll it with ease, no matter how much you've packed inside.

Two words: Cup. Holders. Perfect for car-trip enthusiasts, this little car cooler can sit in the middle of seats to act as a console . According to the brand, it can hold 12 12-ounce cans. It also comes with a carrying strap for easy transport from the car when you reach your destination. It plugs into your car's 12V outlet (the little round one you can stick a car phone charger in) and the six-foot cord can reach to the middle or back seat too. Note that this is a more of a powered cooler and not a refrigerator: The temperature of the cooler is dependent on the outside temperature. It can cool 32° to 36° below the outside temp, so if you want to keep food safe under 40° F, you'll want to add ice packs or use a proper refrigeration device. It does keep food warm too. According to the brand it can heat up to 140° and has an indicator light so you know what temperature mode is in use at a glance.

This small portable refrigerator from Cooluli is great for keeping a few drinks or skincare products close and cool . According to online reviews (there are over 5K five-star reviews on Amazon), it can hold up to six cans of soda. The door is glass, so you can write or draw using dry-erase markers. It also comes in a smaller size and a few different colors as well. Something to note: The temperature is dependent on the ambient temperature of the room, which means it might not keep a low enough temperature to reach food safety standards. It also warms, which could be great for keeping cups of coffee or tea warm at your bedside or at a desk.

How we choose the best portable refrigerators

line break

Here at the Good Housekeeping Institute , we've done extensive evaluations on refrigerators, running tests on over 50 fridges over the past decade to determine the best refrigerator brands and mini fridges . Similarly, we've tested products across the entire outdoor category to assess the top picks in camping gear , camping stoves and tents .

Though we haven't run full category testing on portable refrigerators, we've leveraged our expert knowledge and scoured online reviews, available technical data and user manuals to determine which options are the most promising. Our experts also looked at portable refrigerators that are highly rated and reviewed online.

What to look for when shopping for a portable refrigerator

line break

✔️ Temperature regulation: Not all portable refrigerators are equal in their ability to keep food cool. Some act more like a typical refrigerator with a temperature range, while others can only cool a set amount of degrees lower than the outside ambient temperature. What does this mean exactly?

If a product claims that it can cool 40° below the outside ambient temperature and it happens to be 90° outside, then the product is only ever going to get as cool as 50°. Keep this in mind when shopping, especially if you intend on storing food. According to the USDA , food needs to be kept below 4o° or above 140° in order to be safe to consume, and you don't want to mess around with the bacteria that can grow in between those temperatures. Make sure to do a test run with a thermometer to ensure the product can maintain the appropriate temperature before using it to store food. Typically, portable refrigerators that resemble proper refrigerators are compressor-based, like their larger counterparts. Portable refrigerators that depend on the outside temperature tend to be thermoelectric, and usually offer heating as well as cooling.

Note that most of the time, opening the door to these smaller refrigerators can make the temperature rise significantly, so try not to do the whole open-close-open-close dance looking inside the refrigerator. Here's a pro tip to help prevent that from happening: Make a list of everything inside the cooler on a sticky note or piece of paper and fix it to the exterior so you know what's inside without opening the door. Run out of something on the list? Simply cross it off so you know you're out.

✔️ Power source: P ortable refrigerators almost always come with either a DC or AC power cord, and often they come with both. What's the difference between the two? DC stands for direct current, while AC means alternating current. If you plan on mostly using the portable refrigerator in the car, look for a DC cord. If a normal outlet is more practical for your needs, prioritize an AC cord. If you plan on using both or if you don't know what you'll have access to, look for an option that comes with both cords. There are also battery-powered options if you need to be away from a power source for a while.

✔️ Extra features: Like normal coolers, it's about what the portable refrigerator can do for you. Look for easy-carry straps and handles, cup holders, wheels and even phone chargers, depending on your needs and what you're planning on using the portable refrigerator for. ✔️ Size and capacity: Bigger means heavier in this case, so as cool as it is that that one model can hold 100 cans of soda, you're going to be miserable if you have to carry it for any amount of distance. If you need that kind of capacity (say, for large groups), look for wheels or other ways to transport it easily from point A to point B.

Coleman 40-Quart Thermoelectric Cooler

Honorable Mention

Coleman 40-quart thermoelectric cooler, our picks: best portable electric coolers you can buy.

So which one do you choose? The first step is establishing why you need a portable electric cooler. If you just want something to keep sandwiches edible on a road trip, thermoelectric is just fine. If you need to freeze fresh meat after a hunting trip or keep frozen food frozen until you arrive at your destination, you'll want a compressor cooler.

For this test, we picked out seven of the top portable electric coolers on the market. We collected both objective and subjective data on a variety of parameters to arrive at our conclusions. Bear in mind that most of these coolers are available in multiple sizes, so our notes on internal size are more for general storage expectations.

Without further ado, here are our Electric Cooler picks.

How We Tested Portable Electric Coolers

We used a combination of practical observations and hard data for this test. Using an army of Bluetooth thermometers, boxes of evenly sized soda and beer cans, and an average-size Kia Sorento, we set to work. Here are the parameters we tested:

  • Cooling efficiency/time

Upon gathering our data and testing notes, we set to work deciding which coolers were the best for certain situations. Here are our picks for the best electric coolers.

For most of us, this 28-quart cooler from Igloo nailed the sweet spot. The thermoelectric powerplant provides cooling power to 36 degrees Fahrenheit below the ambient temperature and can also heat the inside up to 136 degrees Fahrenheit. This flexibility allows you to keep cold things cold and hot things hot. It’s the best of both worlds.

The Igloo lacks a freezer function, but the attractive price point reflects that. The design isn’t anything impressive, but it’s what Igloo is known for: functional and durable. The small size is perfect for road trippers and truckers—it fits just about anywhere in the vehicle, even the front floorboard—and the price is undeniably great, which is why we picked it as the Best Compact Electric Cooler . We wish it had an alternate power source besides its 12-volt cig-lighter plug, but there are plenty of affordable DC to AC adapters available at Amazon .

Specifications

The electric car coolers/freezers in this test vary wildly in price, but this Alpicool 48-quart entry held its own against the more expensive options. It boasts a healthy capacity, holding 59 soda cans (without the internal basket). The cooler comes with 12-volt and 120-volt power cords, so you can pre-cool it at home, keep it cooling on the road, and plug it in when you arrive at your destination.

The Alpicool didn't get as cold as some of the others we tested (see graph below), but it was definitely cold enough to keep frozen items frozen. This is a great choice.

The Anker EverFrost 40L is unlike any other cooler on this list. In addition to being able to be plugged into your vehicle for cooling on the road, it also features a built-in 299Wh battery that can power the cooler even when it’s unplugged.

This means you can keep your items chilling even when your car is turned off without draining your vehicle’s battery. It also means you can take the cooler to a tailgate party or beach and keep your food and drinks cold all day long. How long the removable battery can power the cooler varies greatly based on ambient temperature, the temperature you set it to, and whether or not it was pre-chilled beforehand while plugged into the wall or vehicle, but with an ambient temperature of 78-degrees, our EverFrost unit kept 65 cans at 36-degrees for around 32 hours.

When plugged into a standard AC wall outlet, the unit took just 28 minutes to get from 71-degrees to 32-degrees using its integrated compressor. When doing the same test with battery power, it took 36 minutes and used 26-percent of the battery. So, if you want to maximize how long the battery will last, be sure to pre-chill it using power from your vehicle or wall outlet.

Speaking of power, the battery can charge through USB-C and a 100W XT-style connection. This XT connector will work with the car charger, wall charger, and even solar panels with the appropriate output or adapter. Anker sells its own solar panels, but any brand should work so long as you convert it to the appropriate male XT connector. The battery will also charge passively via the car and wall charging input that’s on the bottom of the cooler.

Other cool features include extra USB-A and USB-C charging ports on the battery for charging your mobile devices, as well as a fold-out “EasyTow” handle that doubles as a surface for cutting or holding items.

We tested the 40L model, but there’s also a smaller 30L model and a larger dual-zone 50L model with two areas that can be independently cooled.

For the tailgater who wants to bring all the goodies, this 80-quart Bodega beast is our pick. Featuring two internal zones that can be independently controlled, it's the ultimate extra-large electric cooler/freezer. The 80-quart combined capacity is handy too, allowing us to cram in 102 soda cans.

This cooler/freezer won't be for every driver, as the size makes it unwieldy and difficult to store. But if you have the room, it's the perfect tool to transform a tailgate party.

One of the industry leaders in portable cooling and refrigeration, Dometic is renowned for its RV air conditioners. That said, if you want to splurge on a top-of-the-line electric cooler/freezer to take along in your car or truck, this is the one you want. It reached the coldest temps in our test (see graph below) by a good margin. It's extremely well built, featuring spring-loaded handles, an easy-to-use interface, and a sturdy hinge.

Temperature control is accessible through an app, and the option to power it by a separate solar panel opens it up for use off the grid. Yes, it's pricey, but well worth the money.

If you're looking for a great deal on a portable electric car freezer, you've found it. We really liked the compact size of the BougeRV ; its dimensions are ideal for road trips in small cars. (Again, most of these portable coolers come in multiple sizes; which one you need is up to you.) As far as performance, the BougeRV was comparable with our Best Budget Cooler listed above but came up just short with its insulation; once unplugged, it lost its internal temp just a tad faster than the Alpicool. But it costs about a hundred bucks less, and Alpicool doesn't make a model that's this compact.

A fantastic option for a road-trip freezer, it performed well in our vehicle space test; it'll fit just about anywhere. If you need to keep frozen items from melting in a compact space, this is the portable cooler to get.

If you're looking for a larger thermoelectric cooler, this one from Coleman worked really well. It's about a third larger than the Igloo for just a bit more money. Better yet, it can be stored with the lid up (like in the photo) or on its side with the lid facing out, like a mini-fridge. Note, though, that it's not a freezer.

If you want the heating and cooling abilities of a thermoelectric cooler with a bit more internal space, this is the one to get.

How We Tested Electric Coolers

best electric coolers tested graph

Managing the temptation to test these coolers by drinking beer around the fire was our biggest challenge during this test. But to maintain our quest for objective data for your purchasing needs, we opted for thermometers, a Kia Sorento, and some same-size beverage cans (unopened).

When considering the parameters for our cooler test, we used the following parameters:

  • Insulation: How well does it keep the temperature
  • Space: Where does it fit in the car?
  • Capacity: How many cans fit in the cooler?
  • Design: What features add to or subtract from the cooler?

Using the Govee Home Thermometer System , we ran our first test on cooling and efficiency . Assigning each cooler a thermometer, we started each at 71 degrees and turned each to its lowest setting, measuring the time it took to get there. The Govee app provides exportable data, demonstrating both the cooling and insulation properties of each unit, allowing us to build this handy graph.

To determine the baseline behavior, we measured cooling and insulation while empty. As a note, all of these manufacturers suggest priming the cooler—cooling them the night before any big road trip with a 120-volt AC power cord (if you need one, such as with the Igloo, you can buy an adapter here ), then maintaining the cold with your car's 12-volt DC car plug.

Next, we pulled out Car and Driver 's Kia Sorento to investigate the size and storage for each unit. Starting with the trunk and moving forward, we checked each row of seats and the cargo hold for possible easy-access storage space. Lastly, we verified the manufacturer's capacity claim, testing just how many standard 12-ounce soda cans fit into each cooler.

During our tests, our team moved these coolers around . . . a lot—giving us a great idea of just how these coolers adapt in real-life situations. Finally, we took notes on design features like portability, the handles, the wheels, interior baskets or accessories, and whether or not each was cumbersome to haul.

Things to Consider When Shopping for an Electric Cooler

best electric coolers tested in suv between seats

Capacity: Consider the size of your electric cooler. You'll want to ensure that your selection can adequately fit the amount of food and beverages you need for your trip.

Power Source: Electric coolers typically operate on AC power, DC power, and/or an external source like a power pack . Sometimes all three! Consider what your trip will look like and the power sources you have available.

Portability: Look for features like carrying handles, low weight, wheels, and a compact design, making your cooler easy to transport.

Thermoelectric vs. Compressor: Compressor coolers work in any outside temperature, but thermoelectrics are severely affected by it. The hotter the ambient temp, the worse the performance. This is why most thermoelectric cooler manufacturers don't provide a maximum cooling temp—it's defined by the ambient temperature. If you want your thermoelectric cooler to work the best, make sure it's operating away from any ambient heat.

To that end, if you live in a hot, arid environment, or are driving through one on your road trip, avoid thermoelectric coolers altogether—unless you plan on using yours within the vehicle cabin and not in the trunk or truck bed.

Temperature Control: Many electric coolers have built-in temperature-control features allowing you to adjust and maintain desired cooling levels. Some coolers (usually thermoelectric models) have a single cold setting that keeps items cool, but not at a customizable temperature setting.

Additional features: Some coolers offer additional features that can enhance convenience such as removable dividers, built-in lights, and integrated USB ports for charging devices. Consider these extra features based on your specific needs.

What is a portable electric cooler?

A portable electric cooler is a smaller appliance that keeps food and drinks cold (and sometimes warm). They can be plugged into a 120-volt AC wall outlet, the 12-volt cigarette lighter outlet in your car, and/or to a portable power source. Each model will have different power sources, so research your needs and pick up an adapter or power inverter if you need to.

How do I use a portable electric cooler?

To get the best out of your electric cooler, you should prime it the night before your trip. Plug it into your 120-volt wall outlet and begin the cooling process. Once it's down to your desired temperature, transfer refrigerated items into the cooler. This way, your portable cooler is maintaining a cold temperature, which is far more efficient and uses less power than cooling down items.

What are some differences between thermoelectric coolers and compressor coolers?

Compressor coolers use the same technology as your home refrigerator, cooling through a series of compressed air and refrigerants. They are definitely more effective in cooling and are ideal for drivers who need to keep items at a consistent temperature.

Thermoelectric coolers use "solid-state cooling," meaning there is no compressor or refrigerants. It uses the transfer of heat or cold through solid metal to run the device. Thermoelectric cooling is incredibly effective, but it does depend on the ambient temperature in which the cooler is operating. For example, if you are trying to run your cooler in the middle of the desert sun, the solid metal plate may have a hard time cooling since the original transfer begins at such a high temperature.

Are electric coolers noisy?

Not really. Some electric coolers can produce a low humming sound when in use.

Can electric coolers be used while driving?

Yes, a 12-volt DC power outlet can power most electric coolers—but be sure to check what the product offers.

Can I use an electric cooler while the car is off?

Yes, but be mindful that the cooler is powered by your car's battery. Run it too long, and the car's battery might drain completely. Luckily, many electric coolers produce a "low voltage" alert, which lets you know when the vehicle's battery is getting dangerously low.

How long do electric coolers stay cold?

This is dependent on many factors, such as ambient temp, insulation, and contents. In general, as long as your cooler is plugged in, it will remain cool. An unplugged cooler, however, will lose temperature at different rates.

Can electric coolers freeze food and drinks?

Some electric coolers have a freeze function that can lower the temperature inside the cooler below the freezing point.

The capacious design means you’ll be able to keep plenty of food and beverages for long car trips. And apart from regular 12V charging from the car charger, it also supports solar charging.

Plus, it also acts as the perfect backup for RV fridges (see best RV generators for camping ).

The F40C4TMP portable car refrigerator is quiet, and several users have praised this feature in their reviews. The company also advertises a two-year quality warranty. However, it’s worth noting that the customer service is not the best out there. Some users have reported the customer service as not responding to queries and parts replacement. Plus, the control panel requires a little time to get used to.

However, if you are confident about repairs in your area, the F40C4TMP portable car fridge is the best option for a full-size car refrigerator.

  • Dual temperature zone
  • Handle and wheels make for easy maneuverability
  • Customer service is non-responsive
  • Slightly complicated control panel compared to its peers

What to Consider

Before you start your search for the best car cooler, there are a few key items to keep in mind.

➥ Cooler Type

Here’s a quick breakdown of the most common types of coolers, so you can decipher which one is best for your needs.

  • Roto-molded coolers: This type of cooler is made from a continuous piece of plastic, rather than having separate parts joined together, which results in a more durable cooler that’s leak-resistant. However, roto-molded coolers are typically more expensive and heavier. Roto-molded coolers like the best-selling Yeti Tundra series do look nice though and they hold up extremely well. Even more importantly, they keep food and drinks cold the longest.
  • Soft-shell coolers: Soft coolers like the inexpensive Polar Bear 24-Pack are typically made from nylon, heavy-duty vinyl, or canvas. They are lighter and more portable than their hard-shelled counterparts at the expense of cold retention. On the plus side, they are oftentimes cheaper and still will keep your food and drinks chilled for hours on end.
  • Plug-in coolers: As you’d expect, these coolers, which come from brands like Dometic and ICECO plug in your vehicle's 12- to 24-volt accessory outlet (aka the cigarette lighter) or a 100- to 240-volt AC outlet. Rather than relying on ice for chilling your food and drinks, they have a compressor and basically serve as a mobile refrigerator or freezer. This means you can set a specific temperature to the degree on them.

➥ Size and Volume

When it comes to shopping for a car cooler, bigger isn’t always necessarily better, especially since they're directly correlated with sacrificing cargo space. Typically, small coolers have volumes of less than 25 liters, and midsize coolers range between 35 and 45 liters, but you can even opt for something as large as 65 to 100-plus liters.

I recommend most families get something between the 30- and 45-liter range, but if you want something that’s portable and easy to carry for long stretches, you should consider getting something a little smaller.

➥ Cooling Capability

Ice retention is surely one of the most important characteristics of a soft or hard cooler. However, a number of car coolers plug in and have compressors to keep them cold. Additionally, they oftentimes have precise temperature control.

If you opt for an electric cooler, it’s worth mentioning that some models support dual temperature zones, so you can bring both refrigerated and frozen foods.

➥ Closure System

Some car coolers have removable lids, others use hinges and latches, a lot use zippers, and a few even rely on magnets for keeping them sealed. Closure systems might seem like a small product element to nitpick, but trust me, even the smallest features can be the most annoying. So, we recommend deciding on your cooler’s closure system before picking one out so you can get easy access to a drink or a snack in a pinch.

This is an image

Preferences vary from user to user, but hinged coolers allow for quick and easy access which means an animal or child could easily get into them too, if they aren't latched. Zippers come in handy if you're worried about the cooler spilling and toppling over, but they are trickier to open, and magnetic coolers are less susceptible to leaks, but they require two hands to open.

Check out our seven favorite car coolers that are perfect for your next adventure, no matter where you're off to!

  • Capacity: 35 liters
  • Weight: 37 pounds

There’s a reason why Dometic coolers are the brand of choice among van lifers , RVers , and others who live a more nomadic lifestyle. Simply put, they are durable, efficient, and reliable. Really, the only downside is their expensive price — the cheapest and smallest model will still cost you a pretty penny (~$750).

I recommend you opt for the 35-liter CFX3 model, which will keep your food and drinks cold anytime and anywhere. The car cooler can reach temperatures as low as minus 7 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s insulated extremely well, is built tougher than the competition, and its handles feel robust and make it easier to lug around.

The cooler can run off both 110- or 12-volt power sources, and it consumes between 0.5 and 1 amp each hour (to maintain a temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit.) Given its efficiency and precise temperature control, you can feel confident storing sensitive food items like seafood or even medication.

The CFX3 has a complementary smartphone app to offer users remote controls and a quick but easy way to monitor its internal temperature. A reviewer at Vancillary — who has used a Dometic cooler for over three years now — called the Dometic a “game-changer” and said it’s well worth its high price tag.

  • Dimensions: ‎27.17 L x 13.6 W x 15 H inches

Annoyingly enough, electric car coolers have an incredibly wide price range. Some are even priced as high as $1,500. This option from Euhomy is a lot easier on your wallet and typically costs just under $300 — over three times cheaper than Dometic’s powered coolers. The Euhomy is a dual-zone cooler, which means one side can be used as a refrigerator and the other a freezer.

This option comes in three sizes, ranging from 35 liters up to 55 liters. The cheapest variant offers enough space to stow 36 cans of soda. The cooler is equipped with both 110/240 volt AC and 12/24 volt DC adapters, making it a good option to use both in the car or at home, or in a hotel room. The Euhomy allows users to set its temperature between 4 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

You can even pair it to your smartphone for remote control. The cooler weighs 30 pounds, so it may be a tad heavy for some. It does have handles on its side to ease the burden of carrying it, but unfortunately, they aren’t as large as Dometic’s car coolers.

A note on availability: Due to increased demand, this product may fluctuate between in and out of stock. We will be frequently checking and refreshing the links as it becomes available again. If the Polar Bear is out of stock, we also recommend this soft cooler from AO .

  • Capacity: 10 liters
  • Weight: 4 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎18 L x 12 W x 10 H inches

This affordable but durable soft cooler offers enough space for 24 cans of soda and 14 pounds of ice while still being narrow enough to store on the floor mat behind your front seat. It’s highly insulated and keeps ice frozen for 24 hours, even in the summertime. It comes in several colors and includes a convenient shoulder strap.

My colleagues at Best Products’ sister site, Good Housekeeping said of the soft coolers they tested , Polar Bear’s coolers performed the best, even just as well as hard coolers. The tester also remarked that it was “very easy to clean.”

  • Capacity: 23 liters
  • Weight: 13 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎17.5 L x 14 W x 16.5 H inches

The Roadie 24 cooler from Yeti is an excellent option for day trips thanks to its taller and narrower size which makes it ideal for storing it in the backseat of your vehicle. It provides enough space to stack 24 cans and a 10-pound bag of ice. With an internal height of 13 inches, it is also tall enough to accommodate wine- or 2-liter bottles.

When it comes to insulation and ice retention, the Roadie 24 won’t disappoint. During my tests, I pre-chilled the cooler for a few hours before a weekend trip, and it was able to keep my drinks cold for 3 days.

Compared to Yeti’s soft coolers like the Hopper 18, it’s larger and much easier to get in and out of since it doesn’t have a zipper. That’s because its latches can be unhooked easily with one hand. Yeti’s zippers, on the other hand, are quite tight and require two hands to open.

I appreciate that the cooler features rubber feet on its base, which add some friction to keep it stable and prevent it from sliding around. Another nice perk? The Roadie is the perfect height to use as a stool when you need a place to sit while you’re out and about.

As for the not-so-great, I wish that its strap were longer. Unfortunately, it’s not long enough for shoulder carry, and when the cooler is loaded up, it swings around and can easily bump into your shin.

Overall, the Roadie 24 is a small but sturdy cooler that’s solidly constructed and outshines other coolers in ice retention. Its convenient size and shape make it a strong choice for a two-person trip or a day at the beach.

  • Capacity: 60 liters
  • Weight: 56 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎29.3 L x 19.5 W x 18.8 H inches

The ICECO JP60Pro is one of the most feature-filled car coolers on the market. The cooler is equipped with four cup holders on its top lid, two rulers for measuring fish (one in inches and the other in centimeters), and rubber-like latches to keep it closed.

This 60-Liter cooler offers more than enough space for a family of four and can easily store 60 cans of soda. Given the cooler’s large size — it’s about 30 inches long, 19 inches tall, and weighs 56 pounds — I was happy to see that it has two handles on each side. One pair is rope handles with padded grips, and the other two are located at the lip of the cooler.

On the left side, you’ll find a drain plug at its base for emptying melted ice, and on the opposite side, near the handle, is a convenient bottle opener. Users can easily set (and view) temperature with a side-mounted control panel.

YouTuber Jasonoid remarked that the ICECO is an extremely reliable cooler that did “really well” at regulating its temperature. The car cooler is DC power only, but fortunately, it comes with a DC to AC adapter. You can expect the fridge to pull an average of 1.08 amp-hours per hour which is impressive given its large size.

Lastly, it’s worth mentioning that ICECO includes a cutting board and a useful wire basket to keep food organized. It’s also compatible with a removable set of 6.5-inch wheels at an additional expense, which makes it easier to move.

  • Capacity: 35.6 liters
  • Weight: 23 pounds
  • Dimensions: ‎25.8 L x 16.1 W x 15.4 H inches

The Yeti Tundra 45 hard-shell cooler is slightly larger than a checked piece of luggage, making it an ideal companion for an extended weekend getaway or camping trip. The rotomolded cooler has rope handles, a rubber seal around its lid, a metal dry storage basket, and tie-down loops.

Compared to the Roadie 24 I previously mentioned, this option has a 55% larger capacity (35 liters versus the Roadie’s 23 liters). It also has a drain system to allow you to quickly empty melted ice. It’s worth mentioning that the Tundra 45 is surprisingly heavy for its size and weighs 23 pounds when empty. It’s probably the largest hard-shell Yeti cooler that one person can comfortably handle.

Although the Yeti Tundra 45 is more expensive than most coolers, it retains ice longer than the competition to keep internal temperatures plenty low, it comes in a wide variety of fun colors and is durable as hell. It’s even bearproof!

  • Capacity: 75 liters
  • Dimensions: ‎38.3 L x 18.3 W x 18.1 H inches

The ICECO VL75ProD is the best option for large families, lengthy road trips, and folks who want a car cooler with dual zones that each have independent temperature controls. The cooler is essentially split in two and has separate lids for each side. That way, you can use one side as a refrigerator and the other as a freezer. Of course, you can set the same single temperature for each side in the event you strictly want to freeze or cool your items.

The cooler sports an ultra durable design with a steel shell and plastic bumpers. It’s weatherproof and has a sealed control panel, which has dual USB ports for charging your gear. It’s also equipped with bright LED lights on each side and comes with two baskets to help keep things organized. This option also packs dual drains if you use ice and need to empty it out once it melts.

Compared to the CFX3 75 from Dometic , the ICECO’s lids are easier to open for faster access to your items, even if you’re in the front seat. In fact, the lids can open in either direction! Both the Dometic and ICECO coolers allow users to completely remove the lids if need be. The Dometic also allows users to plug the cooler into both 12- and 120-volt outlets at the same time. However, Dometic’s coolers are oftentimes several hundred dollars more expensive than ICECO models.

If you have space for this massive cooler (it weighs a whopping 67 pounds), it will offer more than enough room to keep your food fresh and drinks ice cold. Although it’s typically priced at a hard-to-swallow $1,000-plus, it’s still cheaper than the competition and still has a reliable compressor and a durable build quality.

What’s the Best Portable Car or Van Fridge

The best portable electric fridge has to be the one that best suits your travel style and budget. Options are ranging from $20 to $1000 or more.

It all depends on the use you’re going to give it. You can start with an ice cooler fridge (decent) or a thermoelectric machine and then move on to a compressor (the best 12V portable refrigerators), and if you’re going to leave it fixed, you can choose a 3-way fridge.

As you can see, you have many options. If you’re traveling sporadically or just want to try it, you can choose a good quality cooler or thermoelectric that connects to your car’s 12V charger.

If you have a camper van with an installed electrical system with solar panels and an auxiliary battery , my recommendation is a 12V compressor refrigerator. Dometic ones are among my favorites and those of many van enthusiasts, but BougeRV it’s a great option for budget travelers conscious.

Compressor refrigerators can also serve as auxiliary fridges for your high-volume van or motorhome.

For traveling by car, the best refrigerators are thermoelectric ones that connect to the car’s cigarette lighter and do not require an electrical installation like a compressor refrigerator.

(Use the refrigerator connected to the car only with the car turned on.)

If you are going camping, you can choose a portable refrigerator that connects to the 220V electrical grid. This way, you will keep your drinks cold and your food well-preserved.

Different Types of Portable Refrigerators

There are different types of portable refrigerators for your car or camper van. Here’s the one that best suits your travel style and budget.

Portable 12V Compressor Fridge

12V compressor refrigerators are the most popular and the ones you’ll see most during your travels and for a good reason.

These refrigerators are designed for all types of vehicles, from 4×4 to boats, and are built with durability and efficiency in mind.

12V compressor refrigerators have highly efficient variable speed compressors that consume very little energy can be used as a refrigerator or freezer.

They come in various configurations, including chest, vertical, and dual-zone refrigerators/freezers – and usually have the ability to operate at an inclination of up to 30 degrees (other types of refrigerators must be kept perfectly level when operating).

This combination of features makes these refrigerators perfect for van life.

Although the compressor refrigerators are amazing, they have one drawback: the cost.

Portable 12V refrigerators are more expensive than other options, and that’s important to keep in mind. Since you’re going to need to add an auxiliary battery and a means to charge them (such as solar panels, 110/ 220V connection, or a switch to the vehicle alternator).

If your goal is to turn the van into a wheeled house, investing in a refrigerator with a high-quality 12V compressor is worth it.

Y por favor, no hagas como nosotros en nuestra primera furgo, y pongas una nevera de 220V con un inversor.

Lo único que vas a conseguir son dolores de cabeza y estropear (mucho) antes de tiempo la batería auxiliar.

Coolers: Refrigerators that Need Ice to Cool Down

This is the typical portable fridge we’ve all started with. They’re cheap, and you can buy them anywhere, and for it to cool things down, you have to put on ice.

Here you have very cheap options ($10 or $20, but they do not keep the cold long.

My recommendation is the ones that are around $50, like the Colemans . They have good insulation, and food can last you fresh food for two days.

Portable ice fridge

To not have to use so much ice, you can put frozen food, frozen water bottles, etc.

Choose those that have a water drain , so it’s easier to keep it clean and your food doesn’t rot.

And if you’re going to take it, for example, to the beach, choose one with wheels, they are much more comfortable and easy to carry.

Thermoelectric Fridges (Ideal for Cars)

Thermoelectric fridges are fine for short road trips and not-too-hot places.

Such refrigerators need a 12V connection but do not have the ability to cool below room temperature efficiently.

Although there are some that claim that they can cool 20ºC below room temperature, like the MobicoolQ40.

If what you’re looking for is something to keep your drinks or snacks cold during your road trips, then a portable thermoelectric fridge can meet your needs as long as you don’t travel to scorching places.

But if you’re looking for a fridge that really refrigerates your meals during your van or camping trips, then my recommendation is to choose 12V compressor refrigerators.

3-way Fridges (Not Portable)

Trivalent or 3-way refrigerators are the most commonly used in large-volume vans and RV or motorhomes. On our van, we have a 3-way Dometic fridge and a portable fridge; they are the perfect combination for long trips.

3-way fridges are fixed refrigerators that need a ventilation outlet from behind and operate at 12V, 220V (or 110V, depending on where you live), and propane.

It is very efficient when you connect it to propane or 110/ 220V. At 12V, it is only used when you are on route.

For us, it is the best option if you are going to keep it fixed in your van and if you have a propane installation, so you do not depend on going to campsites or areas with electricity.

It has very low consumption; a 13kg bottle can last you two months, using it every day.

Our fridge is the DOMETIC 5380, 80-litre, trivalent, propane-powered, 220V, and 12V.

The Fridge that Opens Above or in the Front

travel car fridge

You have two types of portable refrigerator, the ones that open above or the ones that open in the front (like the ones in the house, but in small).

You can find both models with the same compressors and features and think that you only have to choose the one you like the most.

But they have different advantages, especially if your idea is to use it as a portable fridge, you will find it more interesting than it opens up and now I tell you why.

Chest fridges (with the opening above) tend to be more efficient

Nevera Portatil BougeRV CRPRO30

Why? Part of the reason is that cold air naturally stays at the bottom.

With chest refrigerators, the door is at the top, which means that the cold air will accumulate at the bottom of the refrigerator, where it has nowhere to escape.

But with vertical refrigerators, the cold is preserved thanks to the insulation seal around the door. That’s why every time the door opens, the fridge loses cold.

Because food has a higher thermal density than air, most of the cold in any refrigerator is “stored” in food or drinks inside the refrigerator, so full refrigerators are much easier to keep cool than refrigerators with plenty of space.

And with the layout of the interior shelves of vertical-style refrigerators, you’re likely to end up with wasted empty space on top of your food.

Chest Refrigerators have More Capacity and are Easier to Organize

If you are used to a standard front-opening refrigerator like the one in your house or apartment, this can be a surprise.

How can it be more difficult to organize a front-opening refrigerator with shelves and drawers than a chest-type refrigerator that forces you to stack items on top of each other?

But in a smaller van refrigerator, empty space is a wasted space that makes the refrigerator compressor work harder (and consume more energy).

Even with the shelves, you still need to stack the items on top of each other, and still, you’re going to need to move the items to get to each other. And you’ll probably end up with a lot of empty air between the top of your food and the bottom of the next shelf.

All of this means wasted space with no real organizational gains.

And if your food moves inside the fridge while driving, you won’t have to worry about everything falling off when you open the door with a chest fridge.

That’s why we no longer buy beer bottles, and now we only buy cans…

Chest refrigerators are easy to carry and easy to accommodate inside your van. But it depends on the design of your camper van.

Before you decide on a portable chest or front-door refrigerator, take a look at your van and answer the following questions:

  • Where are you going to put the portable fridge?
  • Are you going to change the place inside your van?
  • Do you want to have it between driver and co-pilot seats?
  • Are you going to get it out of your van?

Electricity Needed for Your Portable Compressor Fridge

Running a 12V refrigerator in your camper van requires an electrical installation that consists of (at a minimum) a 12V power outlet connected to an auxiliary battery (not to the car or van battery) and a means to charge it.

But, how much battery capacity do you need?

Determining the Capacity of Your Auxiliary Battery

To calculate the battery capacity, you need to run your fridge reliably and first find the refrigerator’s average power consumption.

As an example, suppose our refrigerator consumes an average of 2.0 amps per hour.

Over the course of a day (24 hours), a refrigerator that consumes 2.0 amps per hour will consume 48 Ah of the battery.

Since you’re never going to want to drain your battery completely, we recommend that you take its power consumption and double it to determine battery capacity.

Therefore, you would need an auxiliary battery with a minimum capacity of 100 Ah in this example, plus additional capacity for your other electrical charges.

This is our case; we have a 100 Ah auxiliary battery, along with a 100W solar board. Also, a 220V connection allows us to charge the auxiliary battery, the car, and electronic devices.

What to Look for in a Portable 12V Compressor Fridge

Here’s a rundown of what you should look for when evaluating refrigerator options for your camper van:

12V compressor refrigerators can be quite expensive in general, but there is a wide range of prices between high-end brands and economical brands .

If your budget doesn’t allow you a range refrigerator, we recommend carefully analyzing the least expensive brands.

Just keep in mind that the fridge is an essential part of your camper van and road trips. It’s better to save a little more and buy something of good quality.

Indoor Capacity and Freezer Capabilities

How much fridge space do you need? Buying a portable camper fridge that’s too big means spending more than you need to and giving up more space in your van.

Furthermore, having a too-small refrigerator means shopping more often. Needs vary from person to person.

In our case, we have a DOMETIC 5380 refrigerator (80 liters) with enough space for a week of fresh food for both of us, a small freezer that works great, and space to put bottles and small food on the door.

Most 12V compressor refrigerators have the ability to function as either a refrigerator or a freezer . But if you need both at the same time, some brands offer fridges/freezers that have separate compartments for each.

Energy Efficiency and Compressor

To not connect to the mains too often, you have to have devices that are as efficient as possible.

Most 12V portable refrigerators on the market use the same highly efficient variable speed compressor, although some brands like Dometic/Waeco, Engel, and Whynter/Edgestar use their own units.

Exterior Dimensions and Weight

If you already have a designated place where you plan to place the refrigerator, you’ll want to make sure all the options you’re considering fit.

Not all brands have the same size; some are taller, others are wider, even if they have the same interior capacity.

And dimensions can be a determining factor in buying your portable fridge since it has to adjust to the configuration of your van.

Weight is another important factor; if you’re going to transport your fridge regularly, it better be lighter than if you’re going to leave it fixed most of the time.

Opening Direction

As mentioned above, this might seem like a minor consideration, but it can make a big difference in the configuration of your van.

Some refrigerators have lids hinged from the back, while others have lids with side hinges.

Side-hinged lids need less top free space to open completely, and since you’re looking into the refrigerator from the longer side, it can be easier to see and reach the content.

The best lid direction will depend on the specific configuration of your van.

Standard Features and Additional Features

travel car fridge

Most 12V portable refrigerators have the following standard features:

  • Ability to operate with an inclination of up to 30º.
  • LED lighting inside the refrigerator.
  • Floor drain plug for easy cleaning.
  • Low voltage cutting to protect your batteries.
  • Removable dividers and organizing baskets.
  • Separate dairy compartment.
  • Some refrigerators include more advanced features such as digital controls, remote readings, Wi-Fi apps, and additional accessories.

Warranty and reliability

Factory warranties give you some degree of security if something goes wrong and needs to be repaired or replaced.

Reputation is also a factor here. Danfoss compressors are known to be reliable, so refrigerators with this compressor are often a safe bet.

Dometic has an excellent reputation for reliability and support, and Engel’s Sawafuji spinning engine is legendary for running for decades without problems.

What are The Best 3-Way Fridges

Although this post is not focused on trivalent refrigerators, here are three options you should consider if you plan to install a trivalent refrigerator in your van or motorhome.

I propose three different sizes: 80, 60 and 40 liters. Chose the one that suits in your vehicle.

  • Dometic RM 5380 : the one we have, and we are very happy with it. If you have any questions or need more info about it, let me know.
  • Dometic CRX Pro 65
  • Dometic CRX 110E

As you can see, there are four different types of portable fridges to take away by car or camper van.

Depending on the service you want these refrigerators to give you, your budget, the space in your van if you travel by car, if you have an electrical installation and your travel style, you will choose one refrigerator or another.

In summary, choose a compressor refrigerator if you have an electrical installation in your camper van or as an auxiliary refrigerator in your large volume vehicle or motorhome

Choose a thermoelectric refrigerator for traveling by car and then connecting it to the electrical grid, at campsites, for example.

Choose three-way refrigerators if you are going to keep them fixed in your van or motorhome. And you have the necessary installation to get the most out of these refrigerators.

I hope this post has helped you choose your portable fridge to travel. If you have any questions, leave us a comment at the end of the post.

This Dometic refrigerator is a great alternative to classic ice chest coolers, especially in tiny RVs. When it comes to effective and portable freezers for long-distance excursions, it’s a game-changer. The tiny design can sustain a frigid temperature of -7 degrees Fahrenheit, which is colder than most typical mini-fridges.

Thanks, Cyrus for your comment about Dometic Refrigerator.

We couldn’t be happier with the 12 volt refrigerator from Dometic. This unit has kept our food fresh and dry all the way to Gettysburg and back to the southwestern United States.

If you have solar installed, it can run fine on a 12 volt deep cycle battery. However, you will need an insulating protective cover (sold separately) to ensure the device runs properly when on battery power.

Portable 12-Volt Refrigerator

Best Portable 12-Volt refrigerator Freezers For Campers or Tailgators

Aaron Richardson

When you’re camping in a smaller rig, you might not always have the convenience of a standard RV refrigerator.

And you definitely won’t be enjoying the kind of residential fridge that you’ll find in today’s modern RVs, travel trailers, and fifth wheels.

But that doesn’t mean you won’t be able to keep perishable food items cold.

That’s where the glorious portable refrigerator and freezer can come in handy.

A 12-volt fridge freezer gives you the convenience of long-term perishable food storage in a cooler-sized package.

You won’t have to worry about fitting a bulky mini-fridge in your rig or stopping every day to fill a traditional cooler with ice.

And you’ll be able to power it with a standard 12-volt battery instead of needing a converter.

Choosing the best portable 12v camping fridge for your setup requires careful thought. There are a range of sizes and types to choose from.

To help you find the best 12-volt fridge freezer in this guide we will walk you through the process of selecting a portable refrigerator freezer, ensuring that you find the right match for Car, Travel, Camping and budget.

So let’s get going!

Three Types of Portable Refrigerators

To begin with, it helps to have a better understanding of the various types of portable refrigerator designs out there.

There are several, but these are the three main types that you should be most concerned with when you’re selecting one of these fridges.

Compression Refrigerators

The technology used in compression refrigerators is as close as it comes to the same technology used in residential refrigerators.

The internal compressor controls the temperature inside the unit and allows you to customize that internal temperature to your preference.

This is what allows many of these units to operate as a freezer or a refrigerator.

Very efficient

Precise temperature control, works when your vehicle is level or on an incline, can function as a fridge or freezer, capable of maintaining lower internal temperatures, the most costly type of portable refrigerator and/or cooler, only run off 12-volt dc power, can be a bit noisy when first turned on.

It should be noted that compression refrigerators (like all RV refrigerators) are subject to external temperatures.

As temperatures rise outside of the unit, the compressor will turn on more frequently to keep the fridge’s contents at your desired temperature.

This is one reason why many compression fridge owners wind up purchasing a separate battery dedicated just to powering the fridge.

And this can be particularly useful in keeping your other batteries fully charged when you’re camping and/or traveling in hotter climates.

That being said, modern compression technology makes these units extremely energy efficient. At most, many of them use no more than one amp per hour.

And the smartest of compression fridges today are equipped with a sensor that will shut them off if they detect your battery level drop below a certain threshold.

This will keep you from being stranded in a remote area with a dead battery.

Absorption Refrigerators

Absorption fridges are designed to run off three different power sources: AC, DC, or propane.

This provides the added benefit of allowing you to pick and choose the most affordable power source for keeping your food cold.

Can be powered by multiple sources

Run quite efficiently when using propane

Won’t function if your rig isn’t darn-near perfectly level

Don’t allow you to set the internal temperature

Only cool to about 30 degrees below ambient outside air temperature

Require up to 10 times more electric power than compression units

Must be properly vented when running them off propane gas

The absorption technology in these units is what you’ll also find in many of the built-in refrigerators that are standard in larger RVs, travel trailers, and fifth wheels.

While their power adaptability might sound enticing, they ultimately perform nowhere near as well as their compression-based counterparts.

In addition, we still haven’t found an absorption refrigerator that’s truly portable. Most of them are larger, bulkier, and closer in appearance to a college dorm-style mini-fridge.

And, although they actually function quite well when you’re using propane as their primary power source, you’ll need to find a way to properly vent your living area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

The main problem with coolers and refrigerators that use absorption technology is that they are highly susceptible to external temperatures.

Even the best models can’t maintain temperatures much lower than 30 degrees below the outside air temperature.

So, if you’re camping in places where it frequently exceeds 80, 90, or even 100 degrees Fahrenheit, these refrigerators are going to struggle mightily to keep your drinks cold and your foods from spoiling.

Thermoelectric Coolers

The honest truth is that thermoelectric technology simply hasn’t caught up to compression technology.

While these coolers can be useful for keeping perishable groceries cold for several hours, they are a poor choice for keeping food safe and fresh for more than a day at a time.

Good for short-term use (i.e. day trips)

Offer cooling and warming capability

Not recommended for temperatures over 77℉

Can’t cool and warm at the same time

Cannot keep food heated at a high temperature

Require an excessive amount of battery power

Emit quite a high noise output when running

No ability to set internal temperature to the desired level

Thermoelectric coolers are also extremely inefficient when compared to compression refrigerators.

They’ll drain your internal battery quite quickly and even the best of solar installations won’t be able to keep them running properly.

In some rounds of testing, these coolers have been measured to draw up to five amps per hour. As you can imagine, this is a non-starter for multi-day trips or remote expeditions.

If you have a hard enough time sleeping already, then a thermoelectric cooler isn’t going to do you any favors.

These coolers are easily the noisiest of the three types. And because they don’t function much better than a traditional ice cooler, we’re not quite sure why you’d spend the extra money on a cooler that doesn’t get the job done and will literally keep you up at night!

So, Is It A Cooler or a Refrigerator?

To be clear, the only portable refrigerators that really are refrigerators (and not just fancy coolers) are those that feature a compressor.

That’s not to say that thermoelectric coolers and absorption coolers won’t do the job for some camping applications, however.

In fact, a true 12-volt portable refrigerator could be overkill for weekend adventurers or folks that don’t like to cook a lot of perishable foods while camping.

For some people, a 12-volt fridge might take up space (and use power) that could be saved for other purposes.

That being said, a 12-volt refrigerator is the only logical choice if you plan to spend long stints off-grid or live in your camper van full-time.

Also, if you’re in need of a container to keep your favorite adult beverages chilled for days at a time, nothing will do the job better than a 12-volt compression refrigerator.

Overall, this unit measures 20 inches tall, 15 inches wide, and 27.8 inches deep.

It boasts a flip-up door on top for accessing the interior, so you’ll need to make sure you store it in a spot with plenty of room above for the door to open fully.

And you’ll be able to set the internal temperature of the unit to your desired level, which allows you to utilize it as a refrigerator or freezer at different times.

The newest inclusion to the second-generation of ARB’s Classic Series is a Bluetooth transmitting module that allows you to monitor the temperature of your unit from your smartphone after downloading the applicable app from Google Play or the Apple Store.

This 12-volt refrigerator-freezer will alert you when your absent-minded buddy leaves the lid open.

This useful application also allows you to set the refrigerator’s temperature in Fahrenheit or Celsius and adjust the brightness on the fridge’s external display.

  • Single Zone: You won’t be able to keep ice frozen while also just keeping leftovers cool with this fridge.

This portable car cooler measures 27 inches long, 13.5 inches wide, and 21 inches tall. It also weighs just 36 pounds.

In spite of its ability to fit in a more compact vehicle, you’ll still be able to enjoy 55 quarts of storage space inside this unit.

It also includes two separate compartments that are each programmable to your desired temperature. And this fridge can be set to temperatures ranging from -4℉ up to 50℉.

5. Best With Ice Maker: Dometic CFX3-55IM Portable Refrigerator and Freezer

DOMETIC CFX3 55-Liter Portable Refrigerator and Freezer with ICE Maker, Powered by AC/DC or Solar

If you can’t stand drinking lukewarm water or you prefer ice in your cocktails when camping, the best portable 12-volt refrigerator with a built-in ice maker is the Dometic CFX3 55IM.

Thanks to its built-in rapid freeze plate, you’ll have ice ready to add to your drinks without a matter of hours once you set up camp and plug your refrigerator in.

This unit also comes with silicone ice trays that feature snap-on lids so that water doesn’t spill out if you move or tip your portable fridge before the ice is fully formed.

And, in addition to its ice-making capabilities, it also gives you a total of 53 liters of internal storage volume, which is enough space to fit up to 83 cans.

Just like Dometic’s 75DZ and 95DZ models, you’ll be able to download their handy app to your smartphone to adjust the settings of this fridge.

And you’ll also be able to use that app to monitor the unit’s energy usage to ensure you don’t drain your trailer’s battery.

To help you make sure you have enough room in your camper for this fridge, it measures 28.35 inches wide, 17.91 inches deep, and 18.90 inches tall. It also weighs just 47 pounds and comes with a 6.6-foot DC power cable.

This is one of Dometic’s most energy-efficient models. It draws an average of just 1.1 amps per hour, which also makes it an attractive option for folks with the best off-grid pop-up campers. And it can be programmed to a range of temperatures from -7℉ up to 50℉.

To be clear, this is a single-zone refrigerator, but that wide range of programmable temperatures allows you to use it for freezing or refrigerating as you see fit.

And it also boasts Dometic’s standard three-stage battery protection system so that you can avoid overly discharging your truck or camper’s battery and getting stuck a long way from cell service.

  • Ice Maker: Reduces those pesky stops to pick up ice when you’d rather go straight back to your campsite.
  • Silicone Ice Trays: Comes with ice trays with lids so water won’t spill all over the inside if you move it before ice is fully formed.
  • Energy Efficient: This unit draws an average of just 1.1 amps per hour.
  • Battery Protection: Saves your battery from being drained or damaged if you run your fridge too long.
  • Price: Yes, it’s a Dometic! And yes, you’ll pay top-dollar if you truly want a high-quality fridge that’s going to last for years.

6. Best For Rugged Use: Engel MR040F-U1 ABS Plastic Shell Freezer

ENGEL MR040F-U1 40 Qt AC/DC Portable Tri-Voltage Fridge/Freezer w/ABS Plastic Shell, Grey

For those of you that need a portable camping refrigerator that can keep up with your desire to frequent rugged, unmaintained roads, the Engel MR040F-U1 Tri-Voltage Fridge/Freezer is definitely worth a second look. It’s built with one of the most vibration-resistant compressors on the market.

This 12-volt portable freezer or refrigerator offers a total of 40 quarts of storage space and it measures 25 inches long, 15.5 inches wide, and 18.5 inches tall.

It also weighs just 48 pounds and is built with an outer ABS plastic shell that’s one of the main reasons why it can withstand bumpier roads.

It also features variable temperature control for its single-zone interior and, depending on the temperature it is set to, it will draw anywhere from 0.7 up to 2.7 amps per hour.

And it has ample insulation that allows it to cool up to 80 degrees below the ambient air temperature outside.

This refrigerator is compatible with both AC and DC power and it actually boasts the internal ability to switch between these two power sources based on availability and efficiency.

So, if you have a smaller RV, it’ll register when you’re plugged into an AC connection and use that power instead of draining your coach or engine battery.

This12v compressor fridge also gives you the ability to operate off a battery that’s connected to a solar installation and it will continue to function effectively if you don’t always find a perfectly level spot to park your RV or truck.

In fact, this refrigerator will still work if your vehicle is parked up to 30 degrees off-level!

  • Rugged Design: It features one of the most vibration-resistant compressors on the market and it’s wrapped in an ABS plastic shell to increase its ability to handle bumpy adventures.
  • Insulation: This helps to give the unit the ability to cool up to 80 degrees below the outside air temperature.
  • Temperature Control: This allows you to dial in the internal temperature of the unit to your liking.
  • Effective Operation On Inclines: This fridge will keep working even when your vehicle is parked up to 30 degrees off-level.
  • Storage Volume: The 40-quart volume of this refrigerator may be a little small for extended off-grid trips.
  • Warranty Problems: Some previous buyers have reported that, while their fridge works as advertised, the process for getting in touch with Engel and submitting a warranty claim has been drawn out, confusing, and frustrating.

Things To Keep In Mind Before Purchasing A 12v Fridge/Freezer

In the interest of guiding you closer to the perfect portable refrigerator for your RV and camping needs, we’ll keep this Buying Guide rather short and straight to the point.

For each section, we’ll offer some specific recommendations on features and specifications that are common to the best portable 12-volt refrigerators on the market today.

Top Door Versus Side Door

When it comes to efficiency, a top door 12-volt fridge/freezer is much better than a unit with a door on the side.

That means less power draw and longer off-grid adventures before you need to plug your rig in.

And top door fridges are usually compact enough to fit between the front seats of your camper van so you can access snacks or cold drinks while you’re rolling down the road.

The downside of having a door on top of your refrigerator is that you’ll have to stack food and then unload everything if you’re looking for a particular item on the bottom.

For this reason, some folks are willing to pay the price on a less-efficient side door model that makes it easier to grab food out much like you would with your residential fridge.

Compressor Type

While we’ve already covered the many reasons why a compression refrigerator is preferable over an absorption refrigerator or thermoelectric cooler, the type of compressor should also be considered.

The best compressor for these portable refrigerators is a Danfoss compressor. This compressor boasts an electronic control unit that helps it function as efficiently as possible.

This unit includes built-in speed control, fan speed control, an electronic thermostat, a thermostat signal, and thermal protection.

The unit also includes an automatic shut-off switch that prevents the compressor from draining or damaging your RV battery.

The only downside to most refrigerators that include a Danfoss compressor is their higher price.

So, if you’re looking for something that performs slightly below the standard of the Danfoss compressor (but still performs well) and has a smaller price tag, then something that uses a cheaper compressor (like the Alpicool or Camco 450) could be an option for you.

Most portable fridge units are going to draw somewhere between 1 and 5 amps per hour.

But when you’re off-the-grid for days at a time, the functional difference between a unit that draws 1 amp/hr and another that draws 5 amps/hr can be dramatic.

A fridge that draws too much power is going to leave you susceptible to having a drained battery when you need it for other purposes (like starting your RV!).

So, if you plan to run your portable refrigerator off the existing battery in your vehicle, we’d recommend looking for a unit that doesn’t draw any more than two amps per hour.

If you’re settled on a unit that draws more than three amps per hour, you’re not of luck.

Many people with fridges that draw a higher hourly amperage simply get an external battery that’s dedicated to powering the fridge (and the fridge only!).

This helps you maintain the battery charge for other essential batteries and your fridge battery can also easily be recharged by a simple solar setup .

Dual Zone Versus Single Zone

If you want a portable 12-volt fridge-freezer that effectively also includes a freezer compartment, you’re going to want a dual-zone design.

These designs allow you to set your preferred temperature of each compartment. So, in effect, you can use the entire volume as a freezer, as a refrigerator, or as a half-and-half setup.

While a dual-zone fridge is going to cost more than a single-zone design, we think these units are a must for full-time RVers or folks that like to take extended trips to remote destinations.

If you primarily use your recreational vehicle for weekend getaways, on the other hand, you’ll probably be just fine with a single-zone fridge (unless you really like to have ice in your cocktails!).

Many of these refrigerators also come with a 1-3 year warranty, depending on the manufacturer. Of course, the longer the warranty term you can find, the better.

But you should also make sure to read into the fine print of each manufacturer’s specific warranty policy to make sure you know exactly what kinds of repairs and/or replacements are covered.

So, Which Is Best For You?

If you’re a full-time RVer or you spend several months out of the year living out of your rig, look no further than the Dometic CXF3 75DZ.

It can freeze down to temperatures of -7℉ and it’s built with the kind of rugged ExoFrame construction that you’ll need when you’re living in your camper van or truck bed camper full-time.

But if your RV travels typically consist of quick weekend getaways or week-long trips at most, you’ll probably do well to save a little money and go with something like the Costway Car Refrigerator.

It’ll cost you about one-third of the price of the Dometic CXF3 and still give you a high-volume of internal storage space for your perishable foods or a healthy stash of your preferred adult beverages.

Frequently Asked Questions

To further assist in your quest to choose the best portable refrigerator for your recreational vehicle, let’s address some of the most frequently asked questions about portable refrigerators to provide a little more information that we haven’t yet covered.

What’s the best portable Camping refrigerator brand?

There’s a reason why our choices include three different fridge models from Dometic. Dometic is the best portable refrigerator brand because they make the best products. It’s really that simple!

But Dometic is also one of the most trusted names in the RV appliance industry as a whole.

If you own an RV, travel trailer, or fifth wheel, the chances are pretty good that you already have at least one Dometic appliance somewhere inside in your rig.

When it comes to portable refrigerators, however, they are the only brand that manufactures refrigerators that are capable of holding temperatures down to -8 degrees Fahrenheit (-22℃).

While ice cream might not be the most critical item on your food buy list, Dometic refrigerators are some of the few on the market that will actually keep ice cream frozen solid.

Another thing that Dometic’s refrigerators are known for is their climate control.

They are the only manufacturer that offers a true dual-zone refrigerator and freezer that allows you to set the temperature of the freezer and refrigerator boxes independently.

And the final factor that leads us to the conclusion that Dometic is the best portable 12-volt refrigerator brand is the price of their products.

While some manufacturers do produce designs that can almost compete with the performance of Dometic’s models, they rarely sell them at the same affordable prices that you’ll find Dometic’s fridges offered for.

Do I need any accessories to go with my portable refrigerator?

Yes! There are a few important accessories you should consider purchasing along with your  12-volt freezer or refrigerator.

The first is an insulated cover that encases the entire refrigerator and provides an additional layer of temperature insulation.

By improving your fridge’s cooling capability, an insulated cover will also reduce the amount of battery that the refrigerator consumes to keep your items cold.

The second accessory that you should consider is a sliding base upon which you can mount your refrigerator.

This is incredibly handy for camper vans, truck beds, and popup campers because you won’t have to physically lift and move the entire weight of the fridge every time you need to grab something out of it.

A sliding base mounts to your vehicle and then you connect the fridge to it using straps or screws (for applicable fridges with holes pre-drilled in the bottom).

What size 12-volt fridge do I need?

The easiest way to answer this question is simply to measure the spot in your RV, truck bed, or camper, where you plan to place your new refrigerator.

Of course, you’ll also need to estimate the amount of space you’ll need to effectively store all of the food and/or drinks that you plan to load into it.

The sizes of most portable refrigerators are typically measured in quarts or liters.

To help you visualize the size of some of these coolers before buying, 20 liters is about the size of three standard NBA basketballs, 30 liters is roughly equivalent to four standard NBA basketballs, and 50 liters is about the same size as seven NBA basketballs. Oh, and one quart equals roughly 0.95 liters.!

Also, keep in mind that you should always leave a few inches of open space around the vent fan on your refrigerator.

This allows the amount of airflow needed for your refrigerator to function efficiently.

And you’ll also need to account for enough space to flip up the carry handles on the ends of the fridge when you need to move it.

What’s the most affordable type of portable RV refrigerator?

The absorption refrigerator is the most affordable type on the market these days.

That’s largely due to the fact that compression and thermoelectric technology is much more complex than absorption tech.

However, absorption refrigerators don’t perform nearly as well as in the kinds of camping situations you’ll need your fridge to perform well in.

Unless you plan to survive on dry goods only, you’ll need one of these portable 12-volt refrigerator models if your smaller RV, camper van, or truck bed camper doesn’t come with its own pre-installed fridge.

We hope that you’ve learned a lot about these refrigerators and how they work in our guide today.

And it’s also our aspiration that you now have your eye on at least one refrigerator that’s going to work well for your specific rig.

As always, we wish you the best of luck finalizing your selection and safe travels on your upcoming RV adventures!

Thanks for the info. Very well written. But was wondering if you can just freeze water(using plastic or silicone trays) in the dual zone ones since they can keep things frozen. Thinking of getting the biggest one.

Buying Guides

Power Options:

Check the power options available for the car fridge. Most car fridges are designed to run on a 12V DC power source, typically from your vehicle's cigarette lighter socket. Some models may also have the option for AC power when connected to a standard electrical outlet. Consider if you need a car fridge that can also operate on alternative power sources like solar or battery power.

Energy Efficiency:

Look for a car fridge that is energy-efficient to minimize power consumption and prolong battery life. Models with energy-saving features such as low-power modes or automatic shut-off when reaching desired temperature can be beneficial, especially if you plan to use the fridge for extended periods or when the vehicle is stationary.

Temperature Control:

Ensure the car fridge offers precise temperature control to maintain the desired cooling or freezing levels for your items. Look for fridges with digital temperature displays and adjustable settings to cater to different storage requirements.

Construction and Durability:

Consider the build quality and durability of the car fridge, especially if you plan to use it in rugged outdoor environments or off-road adventures. Look for sturdy materials, reinforced corners, and robust latches to withstand vibrations and impacts.

I Hate Sleeping in a Tent. So I Turned My Car Into a Cozy Camping Haven.

A car with an air mattress in the back parked at a campsite.

By Elissa Sanci

Elissa Sanci is a writer on the discovery team. She has found that clear ice makes carbonated drinks taste better, and citronella candles don’t work.

Though I love soaking in the beauty of the great outdoors, I wouldn’t call myself an outdoorsy person. Rather, I identify as an “outsidey” person : someone who appreciates nature wholeheartedly but ultimately craves the creature comforts (and safety) of my home.

I have no qualms with hiking miles to summit a mountain or sliding on my butt to get to the bottom of a canyon—but sleeping on the ground with only a thin layer of nylon separating me from the outside world is where I draw the line.

Not only do I prefer to be comfortable and warm at night, but I’m also simply too afraid of what could be lurking in the woods to sleep peacefully in a tent.

My solution has been to ditch the tent entirely and turn the back of my Subaru Crosstrek into a cozy campsite instead. This setup, which hinges on an air mattress designed for cars, is more comfortable than sleeping on the ground and blocks the elements better than a tent ever could. It also provides more security from potential campsite scaries, like small creatures and critters, or even predators like mountain lions. (But keep in mind that, even though a car offers more protection than a tent, bears can still break in, especially if they smell food—so be careful not to eat or store food in your car overnight.)

For someone like me, a prima donna scaredy cat, camping in my car is a way to have my s’more and eat it, too.

Here’s the gear I use when I want to be close, but not too close, to nature.

A car-compatible air mattress

A car with a Saygogo SUV Air Mattress laying over the back seats.

Saygogo SUV Air Mattress

A staff-favorite, customizable, inflatable car mattress.

This air mattress has six inflatable chambers that allow it to fit into a wider range of cars, including sedan back seats. It includes a car-compatible air pump, along with two inflatable pillows and a piece that fills the backseat footwells.

Buying Options

The first thing you need to transform your car into a comfy cocoon is an air mattress specifically intended for use in sedan backseats and SUV cargo areas.

The Saygogo SUV Air Mattress , which I’ve used intermittently over the last two years, offers a great value for casual campers. It has six separate inflatable chambers that you can fill (or leave empty) as needed to fit your space. This makes it compatible with most SUVs and sedans and lets you personalize your setup in a way that makes most sense for you.

The Saygogo air mattress includes a separate inflatable piece designed to fill the gap created by your car’s backseat footwells, so you can lay comfortably without the mattress caving into that empty space. Also included is an air pump with a 9 V car adapter that can be used to inflate and deflate the mattress.

Fully inflated, the mattress has a max weight limit of 380 pounds and can comfortably sleep two adults. It loses a bit of air overnight, especially when two people use it, so you have to top it off if you plan to use it a second night—though I find myself deflating and folding up the mattress in the mornings anyway so I can use my car to get around during the day. The Saygogo air mattress also comes with two inflatable pillows, but I tend to bring a regular pillow, along with sheets, blankets, and my sleeping bag for especially cold nights.

Window screens to keep out bugs

A car door with a SameeFloral Universal Car Window Screen.

SameeFloral Universal Car Window Screens

Staff-favorite temporary mesh window shades.

These stretchy mesh shades fit over the top of your car doors to keep bugs out while letting air flow through freely when the windows are rolled down. They also provide some privacy and help block the sun.

I knew I’d want to leave my windows cracked overnight to keep the interior of my car from getting too stuffy while I slept, but the thought of inviting bugs into my space made my skin crawl. Universal car window screens were the answer: These mesh window shades let through fresh air while providing a barrier that creepy-crawlies can’t cross.

Essentially large mesh bags that you pull down over top of your car doors, these shades are elastic enough to fit over most car doors while retaining enough tension so you can pull them taut across your windows. (I use screens from SameeFloral, but a handful of seemingly identical shades are available on Amazon in case this particular option is out of stock.) Once they’re installed, you’ll be able to roll down your windows without interference. The dark shades also provide some privacy, and they’re reasonably effective at blocking morning rays of sun.

Battery-powered lighting

A Black Diamond Moji Lantern handing inside a car.

Black Diamond Moji Lantern

A pocket-sized lantern.

This lantern fits in the palm of a hand and has two fold-up handles for hanging. Powered by three AAA batteries, it casts a strong, cool-white glow.

Light is essential for any camper, whether you’re in a tent or tucked away in your car. The Black Diamond Moji Lantern is palm-sized and emits a strong, cool-white glow that easily lights up the back of your car. The Moji Lantern turns on and off with a click of a button, and you can hang it from a grab handle or a headrest by its metal handles to create overhead lighting or keep it beside you on the mattress while you get situated for bed. This little lantern uses AAA batteries, so pack extras, just in case.

Lights can be used for more than just illumination; they can also help turn your space into a cozy den. I like to thread battery-powered string lights through my car’s grab bars so that I can kick back and decompress in the warm glow of twinkling lights after a long day of hiking. I turn them off right before I drift off, but you could easily keep them on as a night light. You shouldn’t rely on fairy lights as your main source of light—they aren’t nearly bright enough to be helpful in emergency situations—but they can certainly make your base camp a more inviting retreat.

A fan for optimal air circulation

An Amacool Battery Operated Stroller Fan attached to a seat in a car.

Amacool Battery Operated Stroller Fan

A staff-favorite rechargeable fan.

This three-speed fan’s twisty arms easily attaches to the metal legs of a headrest, has a long-enough battery life to last the night, and includes a built-in LED light.

The first time I camped out in my Subaru Crosstrek, I didn’t foresee how warm and stuffy the air inside my car would get, even with the windows cracked—and things only got warmer once rain started pouring, forcing me to close the windows. I woke up in a puddle of sweat and, upon returning home, immediately bought an Amacool battery-operated fan , which we recommend for kids going to sleepaway camp .

The Amacool fan has three speed settings and is surprisingly powerful for something so small; it’s able to circulate the air in a closed space and cool down most sweaty sleepers (myself included). You can twist the fan’s flexible tripod legs around the metal legs of a headrest or a grab handle, and its USB-C rechargeable battery lasts up to 10 hours. The fan also has a built-in LED light, which can come in handy as a backup option if your lantern batteries die.

A portable power bank

travel car fridge

Belkin BoostCharge Plus 10K

Slim, portable, and powerful.

This power bank is small and light, and its rounded edges make it easy to slip into a pocket. It has two built-in USB-C and Lightning cables and enough capacity to charge most smartphones up to three times.

Even though you can use your car during the day to charge your devices, it’s still a good idea to keep a power bank on hand in the event your phone or Kindle needs a little extra juice after you’ve settled in for the night. The Belkin BoostCharge Plus 10K is small enough to tuck into a glove compartment or back seat pockets when not in use, yet has enough battery capacity to charge most smartphones up to three times. It also has two built-in cables—USB-C and Lightning—so you don’t need to sift through your belongings to find your own charging cord.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…
