Jeans are the workhorses of your wardrobe. They can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion, which makes them a key part of any capsule travel wardrobe.

As flexible as a great pair of jeans can be, though, denim often gets a bad rap for being, well, not very flexible. But when durable cotton denim is infused with a hint of stretch in your favorite cut and silhouette, then jeans become the pants you want to wear anywhere, with anything. From straight cut to boot cut and from skinny to slim, here are 16 of the most comfortable pairs of jeans we’ve found for women and men. Find a pair or two you like because you’ll want to pack one and wear the other while you travel.

Best Women's Travel Jeans

Best overall, aviator best travel jeans relaxed.

These stylish jeans offer a comfortable relaxed fit without feeling too stretched out.

They are pricey.

Is it too on the nose that the jeans atop our list are called the Best Travel Jeans? Not if they're the Aviator ones in question. Get ready to look as stylish and put together as you've ever been for traipsing through the airport terminal for your long-haul flight. These medium-weight jeans feature a high-rise waist with a relaxed fit throughout — there's just enough give for these to feel roomy and comfortable when you zip them up without feeling like they’ve stretched out completely by the end of the day.

Aside from the supremely comfortable fit, they also include finer details that travelers will appreciate, like anti-chafe zippers. Even better, there are two front pockets spacious enough to slip in your passport and phone, along with two pockets in the back with hidden zippers if you’d prefer to keep your valuables there instead. The dark indigo wash is that perfect cross between jeans and dress pants, so you can style these jeans up or down as you see fit. Speaking of fit, there’s a slim version of the relaxed fit, plus you can get either pair hemmed for free when you purchase.

The Details: 24 to 36 | 70 percent cotton, 28 percent Tencel/Lyocell, and 2 percent elastane | Hand wash or machine wash on cool; air dry or tumble dry medium

Best Budget

Old navy high-waisted wow loose jeans.

These comfy mom jeans are wallet-friendly enough to get in every color.

We love the loose fit, but you might prefer a more tapered leg.

These aptly named Wow jeans are the epitome of comfort and style at a price that will leave you with extra cash to check a bag or upgrade your seat. The waistband lands right at the belly button like a good pair of mom jeans should, and they feature a snug fit through the hip and thigh that loosens up at the knees through the calf.

They’re made from 62 percent cotton, 30 percent recycled polyester, and 7 percent recycled cotton, but it’s the 1 percent spandex that offers that tiny bit of stretch so they’ll already feel broken in when you pull them on. In short (or regular or long, if you prefer), these jeans are perfect for long-haul flights or for when you just want to hit the ground running when you arrive at your destination. Choose from light, medium, or dark wash options, or take advantage of their super low price and snag all three.

The Details: 0 to 30; short, regular, long | 62 percent cotton, 30 percent recycled polyester, 7 percent recycled cotton, 1 percent spandex | Machine wash cold (inside out, with like colors); tumble dry low

Best Designer

Oliver logan crosby high rise.

Oliver Logan

These comfortable jeans are sustainably made and backed by a lifetime warranty.

The raw hem is stylish, but it might not be for everyone.

We can see why these jeans are a bestseller with stellar reviews to boot, featuring a straight-cut leg with a raw hem. The Crosby also has a high-rise waist and a relaxed fit that will look great teamed up with your favorite T-shirt and sneakers or dressed up with a blazer and boots for work or a fun night out.

These jeans come in six different washes ranging from the Ralph (dark denim) to the light blue four-year vintage; the latter wash boasts super-cool distressed features for more casual styling. Each pair is made from soft recycled cotton with a hint of spandex for stretch without feeling stretched out. We love that the company is committed to sustainability with its reused materials and ethical manufacturing. We appreciate that there’s even a lifetime warranty so you can feel confident about your purchase.

The Details: 24 to 35 | 66 percent cotton, 33 percent recycled cotton, 1 percent spandex | Machine wash cold (but do it rarely); hang dry

Best High-waisted

Abercrombie & fitch ultra high rise 90s straight jean.

Abercrombie & Fitch

These sit at the natural waistline so you can tuck or untuck your shirt as you please.

You may get decision fatigue trying to decide among the 32 different color and distressed options.

This is the highest-rise waist Abercrombie offers; it sits at the natural waistline so it's perfect whether you like to keep your shirt tucked or untucked. These have built-in stretch so they feel broken in from the first time you wear them. They feature a clean hem, but if you want an edgier look, choose one of the distressed pairs with the “destroy” moniker.

The only challenge with these jeans is choosing a color. They come in 32 different shades. If you really love these jeans, you can get a pair of them in every shade of blue denim you could want, plus colors like dark green, black, and dark brown. There’s even a pair with faux leather details from the thigh down for a sexy addition to your wardrobe. We love that these are priced right so you can buy more than one pair if you’re having trouble deciding. We also love the inclusive sizing, plus you can choose from five different lengths from extra short to extra long.

The Details: 23 to 37; extra short, short, regular, long, extra long | 99 percent cotton, 1 percent elastane | Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Best Mid-rise

Gap midrise girlfriend jeans.

They offer a loose fit without losing your curves.

The raw hem might not suit everyone’s style.

Whereas boyfriend jeans feature a loose and baggy fit, girlfriend jeans are designed with a slimmer straight fit that sits higher on the hips. It's a curve flaunting style for sure, but this mid-rise pair definitely offers the comfy, roomy fit through the hip and thigh that you want for travel. The leg tapers slightly to a raw hem we think happens to look great whether full length or cuffed once for a fringed crop.

These jeans are made from 99 percent cotton with 1 percent of stretch — just enough to feel some give without feeling too stretched out. They are available in inclusive sizes from regular to tall to petite with short, regular, and long inseams. Choose from four different color washes ranging from black to light distressed denim, but at these prices we don't blame you if you grab all four of them.

The Details: 23 to 30; regular, tall, petite | 99 percent cotton, 1 percent spandex | Machine wash

Best Jeggings

Democracy blue denim jegging "ab"solution booty lift jean.

These cute and comfy jeggings come in inclusive sizes.

Your booty might not need the help of this fabric’s lift technology.

The jegging has long been touted as the ideal combination of comfortable, snug leggings with the stylish appeal of jeans. We believe we've found your new favorite pair in this bestseller; in fact, it might just become your favorite pair of pants even when you're not traveling.

These jeggings use "Ab"solution Booty Lift technology that slims your tummy while also lifting your booty. It comes in various lengths and inclusive sizing. It also comes in a range of colors, though we love the medium blue wash that can be paired with any style and color of top you’ve packed. The best part, though, is the fabric technology that shows off your curves while also making you feel super comfortable, thanks to the 2 percent spandex that provides the snug yet comfortable fit. We love the whiskering and fading in the front and the no-gap elastic waistband hiding in the back.

The Details: 0 to 16; Regular, petite, and plus | 54 percent cotton, 27 percent rayon, 17 percent polyester, 2 percent spandex | Machine wash inside out on cold; tumble dry low

Best Skinny

Good american always fits good waist skinny jeans.

Good American

The adaptive fabric technology might make these the closest you’ll ever get to the perfect pair of jeans.

There is a learning curve with the unique sizing system.

If you love the slim silhouette of skinny jeans, get ready to meet your new favorite pair. This pair features a waist-cinching style that leads into a curve-hugging fit down to the ankle, so your silhouette is defined with a comfortable, still-stretchy feel.

You’re likely familiar with one size fits all or one size fits most designs, but get ready to experience a one size fits four . That’s because the brand’s fabric technology adapts to your body's ever-changing composition. If that sounds like these pants are magic, they sort of are because you're guaranteed a great fit every time. We love the medium wash that looks as good with heels and a blouse as it does with jeans and a T-shirt.

The Details: 00 to 4, 6 to 12, 14 to 18, 20 to 26, 28 to 32 | 81.5 percent cotton, 5 percent recycled cotton, 4.5 percent elasterell-p, 5 percent recycled polyester, 4 percent elastane | Machine wash cold, inside out; dry flat or hang dry

Best Boyfriend

Everlane the super-soft relaxed jean.

These jeans are supremely lightweight and soft.

They only come in two colors.

Looking for the perfect pair of laidback jeans? This slouchy pair lives up to its name, even though they are made from rigid denim. Don’t be alarmed by that design term. The material actually features a looser weave for a supremely soft feel; the “rigid” term just means the denim offers the generous fit you desire in a boyfriend jean without having to worry about them stretching out.

In fact, these jeans could be the lightest, most comfortable pair you've ever owned. The classic design features a straight leg that hits at the ankle and a relaxed fit that gives a casual yet tailored look. The material is super-soft and feels like you've had these jeans in your closet for years. Choose from vintage light blue or vintage dark blue, though we'd argue for solidifying your wardrobe by purchasing both.

The Details: 23 to 33 | 100 percent cotton | Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Best Men's Travel Jeans

Best overall for men, bonobos extra stretch travel jeans.

These comfortable jeans are available in several fits and lengths, so it’s like you’re getting a custom pair.

These come in a variety of colors, but only one classic denim hue.

These jeans feature the classic style and silhouette you want with all the stretch you need for comfortable travel — but not so much stretch that these soft cotton jeans will appear slouchy. In addition to navy blue and black, these jeans come in a variety of other great colors like brown, charcoal, tan, steel, and even a port.

We like the inclusive sizing that also allows you to choose your fit: tailored, slim taper, slim, athletic, and straight, and you can choose from five lengths, 28- to 36-inches. Be sure to check for a code so you can get them at a deeper discount, too.

The Details: 28 to 46; Tailored, slim taper, slim, athletic, straight | 94 percent cotton, 4 percent polyester, 2 percent elastane | Machine wash cold inside out with like colors; tumble dry low

Best Budget for Men

Gap athletic taper jeans in gapflex.

These not-so-basic jeans feature a fit that’s both roomy and streamlined.

These only come in two colors, but it’s enough to round out your wardrobe.

We get it: you'd rather spend money on your trip than your travel wardrobe. Fortunately for you, these jeans are high-quality and budget friendly. They have a mid-rise waist and feature a roomier fit throughout the hip and thigh, thanks to GapFlex fabric technology that includes a dose of Elasterell and Lycra for just enough stretch.

The jeans taper to a slimmer calf — not exactly slim or skinny fit, but enough to look good cuffed or straight, so you've got options for styling with your footwear. We like the feathering at the top of the leg that makes these look lived in. Even better, they have enough stretch so that they feel lived in, which means you'll feel comfortable from the first time you zip these up. These jeans are available in black and dark tinted (a medium/dark blue) so either will pair with various color tops.

The Details: 28 to 42; Regular and tall | 93 percent cotton, 5 percent Elasterell, 2 percent Lycra | Machine wash cold

Best Designer for Men

Buck mason japanese loomstate selvedge ford standard jean.

The classic jean gets a modern upgrade with a hint of stretch for comfort.

They are the priciest pair on our list.

There’s a lot to like about this anything-but-boring pair of classic jeans. The waist is mid rise, and the fit is straight through the thighs, tapering slightly just below the knee. The selvedge denim is made on a traditional shuttle loom, creating a denim texture that just gets better with time. But you won’t need any time to break in these jeans. They’re garment rinsed so they already feel like you’ve been wearing them forever, plus there’s a hint of stretch for even more comfort. We love these jeans in this darker wash of denim that makes it as easy to style with a dress shirt as it is with a T-shirt.

The Details: 28 to 38 | 14-ounce Japanese selvedge denim | Machine wash cold; hang dry

Best Classic for Men

Mott & bow mercer jeans.

Mott & Bow

They’re made from a soft, breathable twill that’s appropriate as a business casual wardrobe choice.

We love the color variety, but wish there were more traditional blue jean options.

If you love wearing jeans but don’t mind a departure from traditional blue, these from Mott & Bow are worthy of your consideration. They’re made from a soft, breathable twill denim that’s got a touch of stretch so you can be comfortable all day. They come in blue, of course, but also in other colors including clay, moss, light gray, and midnight, so you can also wear them when the situation calls for a business casual wardrobe.

These look like classic mid-rise jeans but the straight silhouette from the hip to the leg opening offers a looser, more comfortable fit, especially for travel. These same jeans also come in skinny and slim; even if you prefer the straight, it’s worth checking out the slim fit ones if only for the slightly larger color selection. These ultra-soft jeans are super easy to care for — in fact, the manufacturer recommends infrequent washing, so they’re perfect for taking on longer vacations without a laundry care in the world.

The Details: 30 to 42; Straight, slim, skinny | 98 percent cotton; 2 percent elastane | Machine wash cold; air dry

Best Size-inclusive for Men

Lands' end men's comfort waist jeans.

Land’s End

The inclusive sizes feature a pair that fits every body.

These are heavyweight denim with some stretch in the waist only.

What these 100-percent cotton jeans lack in stretch, they make up for in vintage style. Cropped at the ankle and finished with a raw hem, these are a key piece for a laidback look that’s still pulled together. They feature a button fly and a 12.75-inch rise, and are made from a midweight denim. Notably, they’re crafted in an artisan factory in Los Angeles which focuses on employing green technology in order to create more eco-friendly jeans, according to Madewell’s website.

Price at time of publish: $148

The Details: 30 to 48 | Cotton | Machine wash

Best Slim-fit for Men

Du/er performance denim slim.

It’s made with an antimicrobial performance fabric that offers a slight stretch along with temperature-regulating properties.

They are a bit pricey.

There are some skinny jeans masquerading as slim-fit jeans, but we believe we found the perfect truly slim-fit jeans. But don’t just take our word for it. These jeans from DU/ER have thousands of reviews from happy customers. These mid-rise jeans feature a slim fit through the hip leading to a hem that's slightly tapered. There’s still plenty of stretch, but not so much that your jeans will be a slouchy mess by the end of the day.

This comfortable performance fabric takes it to the next level with body temperature regulating and anti-microbial properties. If you like the feel of these performance jeans, they also come in an athletic straight fit and a relaxed fit so you can expand your wardrobe accordingly.

The Details: 28 to 40 | 70 percent organic cotton, 28 percent Coolmax All Season Polyester, 2 percent Lycra Spandex | Machine wash

Best Boot-leg for Men

Lucky brand easy rider boot premium coolmax stretch jean.

Lucky Brand

These jeans offer a comfortable fit and also regulate your body temperature.

They’re only available in lighter washes.

The bootcut jean is a classic style, but the perfect one is sometimes hard to come by. You want a calf that is indeed roomy enough to fit over your favorite pair of boots but not so flared that they look like bell bottoms. This mid-rise pair features a classic design with a straighter fit. Don’t worry — the calf is still roomy enough for this boot-cut jean to live up to its name, but it’s sleek enough to look great cuffed to change up the style when you want.

These jeans are made from Coolmax technology that offers a breathable, stretchy fit that regulates your body temperature no matter the season. It's the perfect pair of pants to wear any day, but you'll definitely want to pack a pair for when you’re traveling through varying climates.

The Details: 28 to 42  | 77 percent cotton, 21.5 percent Coolmax, 1.5 percent elastane | Machine wash cold; tumble dry low

Best Skinny for Men

Levi’s 510 skinny flex men’s jeans.

These are skinny without being skin-tight, thanks to a hint of Lycra.

They run large.

“Skinny fit” does not have to mean skin-tight. That’s why we love the comfortably snug silhouette on this pair that sits at the natural waistline. The skinny fit through the seat and thigh is the profile you prefer, but the material is made with a hint of Lycra, so you get the look you want with the comfort you crave.

Whether you want to show off cool kicks, boots, loafers, or your other favorite footwear, the narrow leg opening makes them all look good. These budget-friendly skinny jeans come in seven different colors including a distressed dark wash, so you can easily grab several and always keep a pair in your wardrobe rotation.

The Details: 23 to 40 | 99 percent cotton, 1 percent Lycra | Machine wash cold; tumble dry medium

Tips for Buying Comfortable Jeans

Find the right balance between comfort and style.

Denim is rugged, but it doesn’t have to be the stiff, unforgiving fabric that it’s often perceived to be. If jeans are your go-to wardrobe choice most days, look for cotton jeans that have a hint of stretch — usually Lycra or spandex — for a more forgiving fit.

The same goes for shape and fit. You might think that skinny jeans and jeggings aren’t exactly approved for flying, but you can get comfortable pairs in both styles. Comfort and style are a matter of personal preference, but in general, you’ll want to consider the waistline — whether it be low-, mid-, or high-rise, and the overall fit, whether it’s classic, boot-cut, straight, slim, skinny, or otherwise.

Consider investing in a high-quality pair

You’ll notice our list of the best travel jeans have prices that run the gamut from splurge to super savings. Budget is important, but being that denim is made to last, you might want to consider investing in a “good” pair of jeans. What makes a pair of jeans “good”? Some will say it’s whatever makes your backside look its best, while others want a pair whose comfort rivals pajamas. Ideally, you’ll want a combination of both for travel jeans. Material quality is also important, but with the trend toward washing your jeans less and less, you won’t have to worry about colors fading or denim wearing over time.

Plus, when it comes to jeans, you often get what you pay for in the best way possible. So go ahead and splurge on a really good pair of jeans, and chances are you’ll have them to wear on your travels for many years to come.

Some will scoff at wearing denim for long days of travel, but add a hint of Lycra or spandex and you can even do yoga in some of these jeans. That said, comfort goes well beyond mere stretchy material. Look for jeans made from materials with “superpowers,” like fabric with antimicrobial or body temperature-regulating features. You’ll also want to embrace the right fit for your body, whether it’s an ultra-high rise jegging or a classic fit with a straight leg that sits more at the natural waist.

Keep an eye on sizing, too. Some of the more rigid denims will soften, but not stretch, while those that promise plenty of stretch could eventually get slouchy. Alas, there’s no magic sizing rule that will help you find the perfect pair in every single brand you try, so be sure to read reviews and sizing guides if you purchase pairs online to know whether you should go up or down a size.

You can easily fold jeans in half longways, then roll or fold them in fours to tuck them into a suitcase or, better yet, packing cubes before you put them in the suitcase. Alternatively, you could fold the jeans in half longways, then again in half from top to bottom. Leave a leg out on a diagonal, then continue to fold the jeans again in half. Then — and this is the cool part — tuck the jeans into the pant leg that you kept out. Voilà, you’ve just bundled your jeans for your carry-on.

The good news is that whichever way you fold your jeans, denim is sturdy enough to keep wrinkles at bay, so you probably won’t have to worry about pulling out a crumpled mess from your suitcase or carry-on no matter how you fold them.

Denim is made to last — and not be washed very often. There are some experts who say they should never be washed, while others say to wash them only on occasion. Those brands and designers with an eye toward sustainability and water conservation will lean toward the latter, and you should, too, for ease of maintenance, especially while traveling. However, in case of an “oops,” denim can always be spot cleaned in a hotel room and hung to dry without having to worry much about wrinkles.

Best for Men Mott & Bow Slim Mercer

Mott and Bow Slim Mercer men's denim

MSRP: $129 Materials: 98% cotton, 2% elastane Pros: Extremely comfortable, very nice fit, ample stretch, come in a variety of colors Cons: A little pricey for some

I’m proudly wearing the Mott & Bow Slim Mercer jeans as I write this article, and it’s no coincidence. They’re the best jeans I’ve ever owned, thanks to their top-notch comfort, versatility, and style. I can wear them comfortably on an airplane, at a coffee shop, on a day hike, or to a fancy dinner.

With the perfect amount of stretch to provide complete freedom of movement, but not so much that it looks like I’m wearing a pair of sweatpants, I look stylish and feel good no matter the situation. These fit me perfectly – not too tight, not too baggy.

Whether worn on a quick jaunt to 7-11 on a cold February day in Tokyo or during a long walk around the botanical gardens in sunny Kraków, these are my ride-or-die travel jeans. If you’ve got the money to spend, pull the trigger. They’re worth every penny.

Best for Women Mott & Bow Slim/Mom Boyfriend Ridge

Profile of a woman's waist down wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans

MSRP: $129 Materials: 94% cotton, 5% polyester, 1% elastane Pros: Available in mom-style or low-cut, stretchy and durable, can be dressed up or down Cons: Could be pricey for some, only come in three colors

Like the Slim Mercer, Mott & Bow offers a similar pair for women called the Boyfriend Ridge; they deliver enough stretch to stay comfortable all day while traveling. I’ve never worn these before, but my friend, Ana, has, and she has nothing but good things to say about them.

Unlike other boyfriend-style jeans on the market, Mott & Bow’s pair forgo the characteristic bagginess of many other jeans in the category. Ana says they’ll fit well and stretch perfectly with your movements as you scramble from Point A to Point B.

So if Point A is an art exhibit and Point B is a street food stall, you’ll look and feel great at those destinations and everywhere in between. Ana loves the adaptability the Boyfriend Ridge provides, which allows her to leave extra pants behind and focus on the journey ahead.

High-End Selvage Aviator Best Travel Jeans

Aviators USA high-end selvage pants

MSRP: $175 Materials: 100% cotton Pros: Selvedge often means better quality and durability, super stylish and well-fitting Cons: Expensive, no built-in stretch, inseam is standard at 34” so you’ll need a local tailor if that’s too long

If you’re a denim snob, you know about selvage produced on old-school shuttle looms in artisanal Japanese mills. But, if you’re new to the material, just know this process produces a clean internal edge that looks great when cuffed.

As for this pair, they’re just about as stylish, well-made, and durable as you’ll find on the market. And because Aviator built them for travel, you’ll find secure zippered pockets that provide peace of mind on crowded metros and bustling city streets.

In short, Aviator’s Best Travel Jeans could be the only pair of pants you rock on your next trip. And with limited quantities, you may never see this brand on another traveler. Check out Nudie’s Hightop Tilde Everyday Blue for a similar women’s option.

Best on a Budget Lee ( Men’s | Women’s )

Lower profile of a man wearing Lees

MSRP: $43 Materials: 85% cotton, 13% polyester, 2% elastane Pros: Widely worn, users report a good fit, well-reviewed, solid all-around denim Cons: Long-term durability is a concern, not going to turn heads

Though I don’t wear them much anymore, I’m pretty fond of my Lee Extreme Motion jeans. After owning a black pair for the past three-ish years, I bask in their comfort, which only seems to improve after each wear.

Part of the reason I love them is because they almost feel like sweatpants. They feature all the stretch and freedom of movement you get from sweats without any of the shame of seeing an ex at the grocery store in your pajamas.

And depending on where you buy groceries, you may find this pair hanging on a rack. After all, this is tried-and-true Lee denim found just about everywhere. But beware: If you want to stand out with style, look elsewhere. For travelers on a budget, however, they’re perfect.

Super Stretchy Athletic Jeans prAna Bridger ( Men’s ) & Kayla ( Women’s )

Pair of prAna Bridger and Kayla apparel for men and women

MSRP: $99 Materials: 79% organic cotton, 19% polyester, 2% elastane Pros: Stretchy, lightweight, packable, fairly priced, great for active travelers Cons: Some complaints about durability, dress down better than they dress up

Years spent in the hiking, travel, and outdoors industries left me keenly aware of prAna. But one thing I didn’t know was that they made denim pants. I thought prAna mainly stuck to yoga and hiking pants made from technical fabrics, but I was wrong.

Upon further inspection, prAna’s denim seems solid and aligns with their athletic clothing line. With a blend of synthetic and organic materials, the Bridgers breathe well, are durable, and stretch considerably.

Plus, they feature approximately the same range of motion as some of their more popular pants (like the Brion and the Stretch Zion ), but with the slim fit and classic style of denim. You’ll find the Bridgers equally at home on the trail as they are on a crowded city sidewalk.

Durable, Indestructible & Made in the USA American Giant Dakota ( Men’s | Women’s )

Man facing the camera with his hands in his pockets wearing American Giant apparel

MSRP: $150 Materials: 68% cotton, 30% polyester, 2% spandex Pros: Durable midweight denim, good stretch, stay warm in chillier climates, made in the USA Cons: Expensive, bulky; will take up a lot of space in your bag

There’s no article of clothing more associated with the USA than the iconic blue jeans. But something happened along that way that has denim fanatics looking to Japan for their next pair of blue-hued trousers.

Forget that. American Giant makes durable, no-nonsense jeans in the United States — El Paso, Texas — with fabric woven in Trion, Georgia. If you need more reasons to pick up a pair, know that I’ve happily worn American Giant’s cozy sweatpants and sweatshirts for nearly half of my years on this planet.

They’re of the highest quality, so I can’t wait to get a pair of Dakota jeans to compare against their sweats. I imagine they’re rugged enough to fit my lifestyle and will probably fit yours too, whether you’re a high-intensity traveler, camper, van lifer, or aspiring full-time adventurer.

Breathable & Moisture-Wicking for Hot Climates DUER ( Men’s | Women’s )

Breathable, moisture-wicking flexible travel trousers

MSRP: $129 Materials: 70% organic cotton, 28% COOLMAX, 2% lycra spandex Pros: Incredibly stretchy and breathable, COOLMAX polyester wicks moisture away from the body, anti-microbial, can wear for days and days between washes Cons: As with most jeans on this list, the price might be hard to swallow for some

While I already own an excellent pair of Mott & Bow travel jeans, I can’t resist a good pair of tech pants. These DUERs appear to be the closest thing I can get to tech pants that still incorporates a high percentage of cotton, and they’ve piqued my interest.

Cotton is important because it helps pants breathe. And when combined with COOLMAX polyester and spandex, you end up with a highly stretchy pair of well-fitting pants that wick moisture to help you remain comfortable even in hot and humid climates.

But staying cool when it’s hot isn’t their only benefit. These pants perform well for hiking, cycling, city slicking, and more. It’s clear that DUER provides one of the more popular performance jeans on the market today: They look like jeans but perform like tech pants, a win-win for travelers.

Best Non-Denim “Jeans” Outlier Bomb Dungarees

Black pair of high-end pants by Outlier made of high-end synthetic fabrics

MSRP: $198 Materials: 96% nylon, 4% elastane Pros: Incredibly durable and well-made, cutting-edge fabrics, DWR treatment for longer wear times, hand-made in NYC Cons: The most expensive pants on this list!

All the trousers we’ve highlighted so far generally fit the mold of what you’d expect jeans to be made of — mainly cotton. But not the Outlier Bomb Dungarees.

Billed as “the 21st-century jean,” these pants are lighter yet stronger than denim thanks to a material called Bombtwill. Bombtwill, the burly cousin to Strongtwill, gets its strength from strategically woven nylon. I own a pair of Outlier’s Bomb Dungarees, which are durable enough for my needs (and then some).

Synthetic snobs have come to expect this type of durable yet lightweight wonder material from Outlier. They’re a fabric-obsessed clothing manufacturer that makes their products in NYC. For a comparable women’s alternative, check out Lululemon’s City Sleek Slim , which also features high-end nylon construction.

Factors to Consider When Picking Out Travel Jeans

Examining a few key factors ensures you score a quality pair of travel jeans worthy of packing.

After all, it’s a pain when a rip or tear forces you to buy a new pair of paints mid-trip. But you shouldn’t concern yourself with durability alone. Take into account the following aspects of travel denim before you decide to pull the trigger.

When you factor in long flights, extended periods of walking or standing, and crowded spaces, the last thing you’ll want plaguing you are binding, uncomfortable pants.

To avoid that fate, look for jeans that allow complete freedom of movement. Fabrics that utilize some stretch, such as cotton blended with spandex, help you stay comfortable from the plane to the bus to the plaza.

Depending on your fashion sense, body shape, and preferences, you’ll favor a different fit over another.

So look for terms like regular, athletic, straight leg, and more to help you grasp how a specific pair of jeans fits your body. For example, if you’ve got thick thighs, consider a regular straight cut to keep your pants from binding.

Also, account for the type of travel footwear you stroll around in; if you slide your feet into boots, you may want a bootcut over a tapered leg.

Materials make the pants. But certain materials make for better travel jeans than others. Remain mindful of the types of fabrics blended to better assess how your pants will perform in the real world.

For example, cotton allows for excellent breathability but doesn’t dry quickly. Polyester wicks moisture from the body but doesn’t breathe well. And spandex makes fabrics stretch, but it holds water.

With the right blend of materials, you’ll stay comfortable no matter where the road takes you.

If you like to stay active while on a trip but don’t want to bring multiple pairs of pants, consider the stretchiness of the travel jeans while you shop.

When you’ve got a fair amount of stretch, your travel jeans can function as hiking, cycling, and active pants meant for more than just covering your butt.

Plus, a stretchy waistband is a godsend on a long-haul flight.

Breathability

Depending on the climate you find yourself in, the breathability of your pants can make or break your trip. Think of breathability like this; it measures how well air circulates through your pants, to your body, and back to the outside world.

So, when it’s hot and humid, you’ll want pants that breathe well to help minimize sweat and moisture build-up and keep you cool.

Traveling is hard on clothing. And when you’ve got limited space in your bag, pants that can stand up to multiple uses, washes, and frequent packing are a must.

If you have any doubts about the toughness of your pants, consider a more robust set, or risk a ripped behind that’ll surely cause you unbearable embarrassment.

For many, the most critical consideration of any travel purchase is cost. But know this; if you choose to save a few bucks but then have to replace your pants mid-trip, you’re not doing yourself a favor.

So, think about your travel jeans purchase as an investment. If you can get a few years or more of use out of a single pair of pants at the higher end of your budget, you’ll likely save money in the long run.

Jeans are the original badass travel pants. In fact, jeans might just be one of the most enduring, rugged pieces of travel gear ever made.

Jeans were the original travel pants. When miners in the California Gold Rush asked for, “ A pair of sturdy pants that could withstand hard work,” Levi Strauss gave them jeans . The game changed and soon everyone was wearing this durable, yet oddly comfortable, denim fabric. Held together with copper rivets and stitching in the places where other pants frayed or ripped, jeans were truly state of the art travel clothing back when “travel” meant weeks of hitching trains and stagecoaches in pursuit of a better life.

But jeans also owe part of their DNA to the world of European fashion. Jeans or “jeane,” the sturdy cotton-based corduroy fabric, originated in Genoa, Italy. That’s right, denim nerds; while jeans are known as the iconic symbol of tough American gold miners, the fabric itself comes straight from the fashionable streets of Italy.

Carry-On-Sized Travel Backpacks

Pack for trips of one week or more without checking a bag.

  • Thick comfortable straps
  • Easy to organize
  • Durable, waterproof fabric
  • Backed by our Worldwide Warranty

Half European wonder fabric, half American icon, half comfortable as all hell, jeans are still great travel pants. Today, though, it’s a bit different. Lightweight spandex blends, new colors, fashionable cuts and styles, and travel friendly features like zippered pockets mean that travel jeans are one of the best items of clothing you can put in a  carry on backpack . They go with everything, never go out of style, and take an absolute beating.

Still on the hunt for a great pair of travel jeans? Here’s our reviews of the best travel jeans for both men and women .

The Best Travel Jeans Review

Let’s be honest. You buy travel jeans because you want to look good on the road. That’s ok. Heck, it’s more than ok. You  should  look good while you travel. Especially if you’re a digital nomad taking meetings, networking, or just living your life abroad.

Before you scoff at attempts to look good while traveling, remember jeans and leather shoes are the minimum level of dress required for many nightlife spots, especially in western Europe. Before you go chasing that hot foreigner into the trendy new club, make sure you didn’t pack like a dork.

Please stop dressing like your dad and being a tourist. Dress like you. Be a traveler.

The Best Travel Jeans for Men

travel comfort jeans

Best All Around Travel Jeans:  Aviator Jeans ($109)

They claim to be the best travel jeans in the world… and they might just be. These jeans are the perfect blend of fashion and function in a package that you’ll actually want to wear (for a price you can afford). The stone washed slim fit denim looks awesome, fits great, and handles anything you can dish out on the road.

Features like the two hidden zippered pockets (plus the 5 regular pockets) feel natural, not tacked on like so many other travel gear gizmos. Although, the belt loop clip is a rad new features.

Bonus:  the pockets are actually big enough for a passport AND a phone. What a shocking concept to design pockets big enough for the two most carried travel items.

These jeans feel great on the plane, and look stylish enough to wear out on the town. I’m a big fan, and could easily travel for a week with just these and a pair of shorts. Plus, they come in a lot of sizes (aka odd numbered waist sizes) so you can find the perfect fit.

Finally, the 70/30 polycotton spandex blend (2% spandex) allows for just the right amount of stretch and give without looking (or feeling) like jeggings. These might just be the best travel jeans around.

travel comfort jeans

Best Classic Look Travel Jeans: Bluffworks Departure Jeans  ($125)

I’m a huge fan of Bluffworks (they’re my  favorite travel pants ), so when I got my hands on their brand new travel jeans I was pretty excited.

If you want the classic look of denim without the bulk and hassle of actual jeans, Bluffworks’ travel jeans might just be the perfect travel pants for your next business trip or off the grid adventure.

Designed to be worn all day everyday, these jeans are cut for comfort and style. The regular fit is a more relaxed fit than I typically wear (I prefer the  slim fit departure jeans ), but either cut is a great option for anyone looking to pair down their packing list. (Side note: You’ll want to err on the slim side when it comes to sizing as these jeans stretch a little with use).

These jeans are even great for long flights (which is really saying something), thanks to the cotton, COOLMAX polyester, rayon, spandex blend. They stretch and breathe like a travel fabric, but you don’t have to worry about looking like a hot wrinkled mess when you land. Plus they have five sturdy deep pockets (including two super stealthy hidden zipper pockets along the rear belt) to keep your stuff safe while you snooze.

travel comfort jeans

Most Stylish Travel Jeans:   Outlier Slim Dungarees ($198)

Outlier makes travel clothing that looks good, and the  Outlier Slim Dungarees  are no exception. If you want a pair of upscale jeans that can handle the “dust and grime” of the road, but still look good in the hotel lobby, look no further. Plus, they’re made in America (NYC!), so you’re getting the authentic denim experience.

These jeans kick ass and look awesome doing it because they’re the next generation of travel jeans. The “Workcloth” fabric stays dry in light rain, dries quickly, and shrugs off coffee stains like a boss. Slam that fifth espresso shot with shaky hands. No one can tell!

Just listen to a review of the Outlier from Tortuga co-founder and CEO, Fred Perrotta:

“I have  zero regrets about wearing jeans  when I travel or even why I fly. When I travel, I want to feel and (hopefully) look good, which means dressing like I do at home. My  Outlier Slim Dungarees  are the best travel pants that I’ve found. They’re are a modern, technical reinvention of jeans.”

The Best Travel Jeans Runners-ups

travel comfort jeans

H&M 360° Flex Slim Jeans ($59)

If you’re into a stylish, modern, slim silhouette on a budget, the  H&M 360° flex jeans  might be for you. They come in a variety of colors (including classic blue jeans), and the 5% spandex/cotton weave means they give and move like crazy (5% spandex is HIGH).

travel comfort jeans

Bonobos Slim Fit Travel Jeans ($128)

If you want to look good in some bright colorful travel jeans, go with Bonobos. 2% spandex stretch and a range of awesome shades makes these travel jeans a head turner for the beach or the club.

travel comfort jeans

Uniqlo Stretch Skinny Fit Color Jeans  ($30)

Uniqlo has been quietly making awesome travel clothing for a while. Now they’re actually coming out and saying it with their “travel essentials” collection. Interestingly enough, jeans aren’t in the collection. Which is super dumb. Because jeans are awesome travel pants.

The nylon blend means they dry a little faster than traditional denim (awesome), and they can move with you while you bike, climb, run, or just win that dance battle with dope windmills.

travel comfort jeans

Levi’s 541 Athletic Straight Fit Jeans ($49)

These pants aren’t the most flattering fit in the world, but I know that not everyone wants a tailored or slim fit pair of travel jeans. These jeans look great, feel super comfortable, and their friggin’ Levi’s. They’re the OG travel jeans, but with a 93% cotton, 4% polyester, 2% polyethylene, 1% elastane blend that makes them more stretchy and comfortable than ever.

travel comfort jeans

The Best Travel Jeans for Women

travel comfort jeans

Athleta Sculpek ($118)

Athleta claims you can do yoga or workout in these jeans. Truthfully, they’re super stretchy. Their site claims this pair “stretches 360 degrees then snaps back into shape without bagging.” From what I’ve seen, that’s true.

But I felt a bit straight-jacked into these babies, thanks to how their waist is designed. It’s designed to “keep you in.” Boy, does it do that.

I’d wear these jeans on a day of sightseeing or being on my feet most of the day. For a day of a flying? Skip these pants unless your stomach enjoys feeling like it was slowly being squeezed to death. For me, that feeling makes me want to barf. No thanks.

travel comfort jeans

Aviator Best Travel Jeans In The World: Comfort Skinny ($110)

Still featuring all the awesome deep pockets, and the hidden zippered one, like the Performance Skinny, these jeans are slightly different.

Because of their material. Which is butter-soft and feels like your favorite yoga pants… in skinny jean form. Also, thanks to their long inseam that comes standard, my long legs felt — dare I say it? — at home in them.

I love how they move with my body instead of suction-cup to my ankles in dreaded skinny pant fashion. After a 2-hour flight, the bum wasn’t saggy, my legs were comfy, and I wasn’t too cold or hot on the plane.

Could I be in love?

Yes, it’s very possible.

travel comfort jeans

Anatomie Luisa Skinny Jean Pant ($225)

Ok, you caught me. These pants are labeled as jeans on Anatomie’s website, but they’re not truly jeans. Because their material is a type of lightweight polyester that manages to be stretchy, comfy, and very flattering.

The barely-cropped cut shows an amount of ankle that Audrey Hepburn would approve of. Thanks to the dark blue color, I looked dashingly put-together for a day of sightseeing.

That being said, these pants are fantastic for summer or warm destination travel. They were too chilly for weather below 60 degrees.

I recently wore them on a weekend getaway to Austin, Texas. Normally, I’d bring just one pair of jeans on a 3-day trip. Because these Anatomie pants took up almost no room in my bag, I brought them with. And I’m so glad I did because they were perfect.

Lucky Brand Lolita Bootcut ($119)

I’ve talked before about how I love my Lucky Brand jeans. They fit me well, have the perfect amount of stretch, and dry quickly. Even when you’re out walking for hours in a damp, drizzling Vancouver night.

My other favorite part? They last for years. Seriously.

travel comfort jeans

Aviator Best Travel Jeans In The World: Performance Skinny ($115)

Ok, yes, I admit it. I was skeptical. Especially with a name like “best travel jeans in the world.”

But these jeans score a 10/10 in the toughest category to master: deep pockets that double as a purse . Not those rinky-dink little “pockets” that barely hold a lip balm that are usually found on women ’s pants. Plus, they have a hidden zippered pocket inside one of the back pockets.

The thicker material feels like jeans, not wannabe cotton hoping to pass as jeans. And I loved the mid to high waist which protected against unwanted plumber’s crack.

Side note:  The pockets are awesome — seriously! I can’t get over how beautifully deep they are — these jeans are your perfect sidekick for concerts, nightlife, or strolling the city at night. In other words: any activity where you don’t want to bring a bag, but still need some MVP items that are usually too large for the super-small pockets on women ’s jeans.

DUER Performance Denim High Rise Skinny ($129)

The denim pants and shorts by DUER are a wonderful option for travel jeans. Made from a stretchy yet soft cotton-polyester-lycra blend, these jeans are built to perform. And we don’t just mean last a long trek out west. They’ll also keep you cool as you bike around town, flex with you as you stretch into weird trying-to-sleep-on-an-airplane positions.

If you’re looking for a lightweight travel jean option, DUER’s line of breathable jeans are an ideal choice to keep you looking good, but not suffocating in a sticky pair of jeans.

travel comfort jeans

The Best Fit, Style, and Length for Travel Jeans

The perfect pair of jeans means something slightly different for everyone. Some people prefer skinny cuts, while others can’t stand them. Some love the almost ubiquitous spandex in today’s denim while true fanatics look for denim without.

For fit, you want to look for jeans that are comfortable and fit well, not necessarily made-for-travel jeans. They should also have sizable pockets that are big enough to fit more than two fingers in, which is a little more difficult for women than men.

The Problem With Skinny Jeans

I’ve always shied away from skinny jeans. They’re not great for long hours on a train, plane, or car, frozen in a certain position because you can’t move and your stomach feels like it’s slowly being sawed in half.

However, skinny jeans work really well with lots of types of shoes. Meaning: they’re a valid choice for traveling.

Straight Legs

If you, too, are very much “over” skinny jeans but are somewhat timid about venturing into voluminous territory, straight leg denim is a good starting point. Since straight legs don’t grasp onto your ankles and hold on for dear life, the legs have more movement and are less likely to ride down whilst you’re seated.

A bootcut is my favorite cut of jeans: slim through the legs with a flattering small flare. Your jeans stay put (i.e., around your waist to make your bum look cute) and your ankles don’t get chilly like with skinny jeans. Plus, many brands carry a bootcut fit, making it easier to find a pair of jeans that fit you.

Cropped Kick Flares and Wide Legs

I’m sure this will be polarizing, but I love a cropped kick flare for travel. The cut is forgiving yet figure hugging, stylish yet approachable. Kick flares aren’t universally flattering (they’re especially tricky on shorter folks) so try them on before buying.

Flares range from pretty tame, a la Paige  Colette  (my holy grail denim) to more voluminous ones by  Mother . For a lower-priced version, try  Everlane .

Cropped Wide Legs

If you’re willing to go bolder, may I recommend a pair of cropped wide legs? I particularly love this option in the summertime because the silhouette acts like two leg vents, letting your lower half breathe. Wide leg pants are much easier to fit because they don’t hug your thighs or derriere. The only consideration, really, is the waistband. Plus, I personally feel more stylish when wearing wide-leg denim.

However, full-length versions are a nightmare in wet weather. For traveling in the rain , I recommend a cropped version unless you’re headed to a literal desert. The  Loup Simone  is a higher-end favorite of mine and  Gap  currently makes a budget-friendly option.

The Best Fabric Weights for Travel Jeans

Denim weights are measured by how much a 1-yard piece weighs on a scale. You’ll typically see weights between 9-23 oz (though 9-16 is most common). For travel, stick to a lightweight denim (9-11oz) or mid weight jean (12-15oz).

  • Lightweight : 9-11oz jeans are lightweight, great for summer, and most common in denim. They’re less durable and more prone to the dreaded “saggy butt syndrome.” I find that I need to wash my lighter weight jeans relatively often because of this.
  • Mid-weight: 12-15oz jeans are stiff at first but, once broken in won’t stretch out, and last a long time. Since the fabric is heavier, they might feel uncomfortable in the summertime. It can be tough to find new denim in mid weights, but vintage options are a good mainstay. Vintage Levi’s are often between 12 and 14 oz.
  • Heavy weight : 16oz+ are not very common, or good for travel. Avoid them.

Opt for approximately 1-2% spandex or elastane.

More than that and your denim will stretch out more quickly. Less than that and you might not feel very mobile.

Are Jeans Good for Travel?

Jeans aren’t known for being great travel pants . They  are  great travel pants. They’re just not known for it. Here’s why jeans are great for travel:

Travel Jeans are Durable

Jeans can take a beating. Heck, they were designed for the mines. Hiking, climbing, biking, sitting in the dirt at  Coachella —it doesn’t matter. Jump in the ocean, stomp through the mud, climb a big ol’ nasty tree. Your jeans can take it.

Jeans also hide stains like a boss. Actually, stains make your jeans look even  better . Get a dark denim and staining your clothes is one less thing you have to worry about.

Travel Jeans are Comfortable

Jeans can take an insane amount of abuse and yet still feel great against your skin. It’s magic fabric. It really, really is.

If you can find a modern pair of jeans with a spandex or elastene blend, you’re in for an even bigger treat. These jeans give and bend with you to perform during any activity, from lounging in the park to biking across Mexico City.

Travel Jeans are Versatile

Jeans work for happy hour, an 11-hour flight, hiking a mountain, or just walking around town. You can bike in ’em, go to a concert, or even rock climb in ’em. Yes, I rock climb in jeans. Frequently.

Jeans are business casual if you’re taking any meetings on the road. They also look at home in a cafe while you tap out your latest blog, or the club where (stylish) jeans are usually on the dress code. The right pair of jeans can even make a t-shirt look iconic. Ask James Dean.

Oh, and before you complain about how jeans are hard to wash, stop. You don’t need to wash jeans. Ever. Actually, according to Chip Burgh, the CEO of Levi’s,  you shouldn’t wash your jeans . At least not for the first 6 months.  Hiut Denim  agrees:

“Raw denim is best given a good six months before washing. The longer you can leave it, the better your jeans will look.”

If you do cave and wash your jeans, just pay 2€ to dry them, you cheapskate. Or wear them damp. Body heat is an amazing way to dry clothes. Seriously.

Travel Jeans are Fashionable

Speaking of fashion, how are you gonna compete with jeans—especially on the road. Most travel pants look absolutely ridiculous. Zip-off shorts? Cargo pants? Sweat wicking trail pants that  *vvvvvippp vvvvvippp vvvvvippp*  down the street with every step? No thanks.

If you want to look like a tourist, wear techy travel pants. If you want to look like you know what you’re doing, wear a great pair of jeans.

Travel Jeans are Heavy

Yes, jeans weigh more than paper weight travel fabrics. But, pound for pound, jeans are a more valuable addition to your  travel capsule wardrobe . You don’t need to pack (or carry) as many different pairs of pants when you pack the right travel jeans. They’re good for daytime, nighttime, work and play. One pair of great travel jeans can be your go to for weeks of travel with just a few other pieces. Plus, you can wear the jeans while you travel (aka on the plane), making your bag that much lighter.

Cuff the jeans up when it’s hot, roll ’em down when it’s cold, and “break glass in case of emergency”—cut them into super stylish jorts (jeans shorts) if they’re “too heavy” or hot for the trip you’re on. I love my jorts. They’re like jeans but lighter.

Jeans Don’t Convert to Shorts

No kidding. Zipoff pants are hideous.

If something claims to do two different things, it probably doesn’t do either of them well. Case in point: ugly pants that turn into ugly shorts plus two extra pieces of fabric for you to carry. Convertible pants are also an indicator that their wearer is a tourist, so button your cargo pockets tight, because pickpockets will see you as a mark.

Travel Jeans are Hard to Clean

Actually, they’re the easiest pants to clean, ever. You don’t have to wash them. If they start to smell, just pop in the freezer overnight (cold kills odor causing bacteria), lay them out in the sun, or just hit ’em with some Febreeze. Easy. Peasy.

Travel Jeans are…

That’s it. Those are the only cons. And they’re not even cons. Enough of this nonsense. Here are our favorite travel jeans.

Jeans were made for travel. They’re rugged, comfortable, versatile, stylish, and timeless. Invest in a quality pair of travel jeans and you’ll have one less thing to worry about on your trip (and when you get back home).

  • You don’t have to wash your travel jeans as much as your other pants; seriously
  • Jeans were designed for gold miners, they can handle sitting in the grass
  • Look for jeans with at least 2% spandex; it sounds weird, but it feels amazing
  • Guys can  jeans with zippered pockets and a big enough pocket for your passport
  • Gals, find a brand that you love and fits just right, then experiment with other cuts
  • Go wide leg and feel the freedom

When you travel, a lot of thought goes into the types of items that you bring with you. If you’re like me, everything that you have serves multiple purposes. I like to pack light, and too many single-use items quickly start to add up and fill your bag.

I usually travel with a single pair of pants. I want to make sure those pants will last a long time! Picking a good pair of pants is based on a few qualifying factors. A pair of pants should be durable, flexible, good quality, not doofy and should serve a secondary purpose like being suitable for a second occasion.

What I like about the company is that they are product-focused, and their garments perform great in all different types of temperatures, occasions, altitudes and activities. It’s cool to see how the company was started and how the products are all inspired by travel. We dive into the details in our interview with Western Rise’s Co-Founder Kelly Watters .

What’s more is they don’t chase fast trends; instead, their men’s line is timeless and functional. If you were wondering, the name of the brand reflects the feeling of the Rocky Mountains (which are in the American West).

I recommend two of their styles:

  • Evolution Pant 2.0

Are Western Rise travel pants worth it?

Here’s what I want to discuss about both the Evolution Pant and the AT Pant : both focus on durability, and comfort, with looks that are great for the workday or the weekend.

In general Western Rise makes quality clothing. After putting together a Western Rise brand review , I’m sold on their items fitting all of my criteria.

The Evolution Pant

The Evolution Pant happens to be ultra-lightweight and moisture-wicking, and it is also stretchy. I like wearing these on the weekend or if I’m taking a short train or bus ride these days.

Western Rise Evolution Pant

These pants are perfect for the summer (or hot weather) if you’re looking for something light weight and versatile. When I took them out of the packaging, I was surprised how thin they actually were.

The AT Pant

For the AT Pant , they’re meant to replace jeans and work pants, so to speak. They have a two-way stretch, and elevate qualities of being breathable, water-resistant and no joke, Western Rise wants you to work from home in these.

I actually got caught in the rain while I was wearing these. I was able to brush the rain drops right off, and I stayed fairly dry. Pretty cool!

Western Rise AT Pant

What are the best features of Aviator Jeans?

I like that Aviators have pockets specifically for a phone, a wallet or a passport. You can zip things in place, and you don’t have to worry about your things falling out or being stolen.

I was once on a train, and I was wearing sweatpants. Would you believe that my wallet fell out?

Luckily, I noticed this before the train left the station, and I was able to recover my wallet. Since this experience, I’ve really come to appreciate zipper pockets.

Wearing Aviator Jeans is a nice experience because they’re comfortable and stretchy. The blend of fabric is soft and durable. I’m confident that they’ll last if I wear them every day, and they’re durable enough to withstand some wear and tear.

Which features of Aviator Jeans can be improved?

I think there’s too much fabric in and around the pockets. They sometimes feel a little bulky around the sides. Their bulkiness makes sense because some of the pockets are double pockets, and you need the extra fabric for the zippers.

I also had to get these jeans tailored considerably (again, by Becca’s mom — thanks!). With that said, they legs fit a little on the wide side.

Update, Aviator now offers free hemming when you order! They’ll also reimburse hemming up to $10 if you show a receipt. Keep in mind that sales are final once you make any alterations.

The hemming has been one of my (and Becca’s) favorite features about Aviator. In fact, Becca’s Aviator travel dress was hemmed and now fits perfectly!

All of the Bluffworks travel pants are wrinkle-resistant, breathable and moisture-wicking. They all do an excellent job of being durable while you wash them, holding your phone (or other items) and secretly having pockets (in other words, they have hidden pockets).

Bluffworks Pants

Why is Bluffworks the original travel pants?

Their original travel pants are made from super lightweight material. I tried these on during a hot day, and I could have sworn that they had an air conditioner inside of them. These will be great pants if you’re wearing pants in really hot climates. They’re very wrinkle-resistant, so if they’re rolled up in a ball for a few days, you can shake them out, and they look presentable.

Bluffworks pants have been around for a long time. In fact, they were created in 2012. They have an interesting history that is worth checking out.

Bluffworks also makes a travel suit and nice travel clothes

The same technology that goes into the pants is also in their suits. If you need to travel with a suit, the suits from Bluffworks are sure bets for having a suit that doesn’t wrinkle or smell during a trip.

I recommend the Bluffworks Gramercy suit , which has wrinkle-free suit pants. Check out our tips on how to pack a suit to avoid wrinkles , as well as my Gramercy Travel Suit review .

They also have the Ascender Chino pants, which are your best option for times when you want something nicer or more professional. They pair nicely with their wrinkle-free travel dress shirts . I’ve been traveling with this combo to weddings and other events, and it’s been a great experience.

DUER (Performance Denim Slim Fit)

Before I was wearing my DUER pants , I was wearing custom pants that I got in Argentina.

The pants from Argentina are some of my favorite pants, ever, but weren’t practical for traveling. They had shallow pockets, and the seams were not reinforced. The insides of the pockets started breaking because they weren’t sewn well, and overall, it was time for a trusty pair of pants for me.

Get free shipping when you spend $99+; no code needed.

When I walked around South America during my year of working remotely and traveling , I was nervous that my pockets would get pick-pocketed.

I also blew out the seams a few times, and they currently have a patch on them. I can’t say that the material is the most durable, but they are very comfortable!

I still wear these around New York City. My phone often slides around and is exposed in the corners of the pockets. I always have to make sure nothing falls out of the pockets.

My DUER jeans are the answer to the problems that my Argentina pants had. DUER pants are incredibly durable and have nice deep pockets. They have a lot of different styles to choose from, and all styles offer features that are unique.

The pair that I have lasted about three years of daily use. That’s something like 1000 wears! They have since worn out a bit, but that’s to be expected because I don’t think any material really lasts forever.

I talk about them as pants made for travelers in my DUER Performance Slim denim jeans review .

For a trip when you’ll be in cold places, I tried DUER’s fleece-lined jeans and discuss them in my DUER Fireside Winter Jeans review ! They’re perfect for frigid climates or a ski trip. They have a thin layer of insulation, which don’t get in the way where other fleece-lined paints might.

DUER Travel Pants

What types of DUER Pants do I have?

I settled on the “No Sweat Slim” pair. They didn’t need any alterations or modifications. With that said, they are a slim fit, so they might not work for everyone. In any case, these are my go-to jeans that I could wear essentially any day of the week, and I always feel great in them.

Man walking in ireland with DUER performance denim

I’ve worn these pants on hikes, with a nice shirt at a fancy event and almost every day during casual days. I only have nice things about DUER pants and actually, I bought them with a friend who also raves about them equally. The DUER pants don’t have zipper pockets, but that isn’t a big deal unless you’re looking for them.

What makes DUER Pants unique?

I wanted to call out that DUER pants have a lot of reinforcement in certain places that usually fall apart on other pants that you wear often. Their pockets are also some of the deepest that I’ve seen in any other type of pants. This means feeling good that things won’t fall out of your pants even if you are doing a cartwheel.

Man walking in ireland with DUER performance denim.

Men's Performance Denim Jeans

The DUER signature gusset and the overall fit make these my favorite. They're built to last, even if you wear them during long-term travel or every single day of the week.

DUER (No Sweat Joggers)

Because I like my other pair of DUER jeans, I’ll mention that DUER also has a pair of joggers . I like joggers for travel because they are comfortable and versatile. You can wear them on travel days and for walking around cities and exploring various destinations.

Joggers aren’t the best for hiking, but they do hold up very well for more active activities like working out and riding a bike.

travel comfort jeans

They look great and would totally work for the traveler looking to find a great looking pair of pants that can be worn on multiple occasions. I really like joggers, and to this end, I’ve rounded up the best joggers for men , which is worth checking out.

No Sweat Jogger

What's special and new about DUER's jogger is that the style mimics jeans, down to the pockets and the fly, which I haven't seen in other joggers from competing brands.

Mott & Bow Staple Jeans

Mott & Bow is a men’s and women’s apparel company that makes flattering jeans in timeless styles. I’ve enjoyed learning about the brand and all its products, and taking the jeans on my recent travels. The jeans are well-made and look effortless, with simple tailored fits from skinny to slim and with a fit for everyone.

See my review on what to know before you buy Mott & Bow to learn a lot more about this company and their other men’s products, from my favorite everyday tee, to cashmere sweaters.

The Staple jeans fit me nicely, to the point where I feel good in them, and they’re durable and versatile. They’re effortlessly comfortable, more than most pairs of jeans I own.

One thing to note is that they only come in one length, 32. I roll them up because I’m typically a 30, but you can also get them tailored.

For the “Skinny” variety, I went 1 size up. It’s rare that I do this, but skinny jeans seem to fit a little on the smaller side from Mott & Bow. Their jeans (based on the “styles,” which all have names like Staple, Broome, etc.) can mostly be found in Skinny, Slim and Straight.

Let’s start with the stretch. These particular jeans are stretchy, so this makes them practical for long flights or travel days. The specific material is Dynamic Stretch, which has a 32% elasticity factor from the cotton, polyester and elastane.

The fabric is soft, which is why I enjoy it. It’s not scratchy or stiff, and it feels like good substantial denim that I’d wear in fall, winter or early spring.

Everything else you need to know

These jeans are part of the Dynamic Stretch category offered by Mott & Bow. There are a few other varieties in that category that might be worth checking out if you’re into these styles.

Mott & Bow also offers pants called the 4-Way Stretch . You’ll see these listed as Broome Jeans . These are unique because they offer stretching in all directions, and they’re good for different types of mobility.

One more thing I’ll comment on about Mott & Bow is that their product pages for jeans specifically state that you don’t necessarily have to wash these jeans often. This is my kind of brand! I rarely wash my jeans (and found that that this is actually recommended by denim experts!).

prAna Brion

prAna is a socially-responsible company. You can learn more about their sustainability mission on their website .

Their sustainability line offers recycled wool and organic cotton. Their clothes are also fair trade certified! Quality and durability are important to the brand. They mention those two pillars in their mission statement.

prAna Brion Travel Pants

Are prAna Brion pants worth it?

Their pants are crowd-pleasers! The Brion line is the most popular pair of pants that prAna makes. The material is cut from their original stretch Zion fabric. They have a lot of useful features that are specific to travel needs, like reinforced rivets, water-repellent materials and sun protection. Somehow, they’ve kept the price competitive and affordable through the years.

prAna Brion: deep dive

A personal consideration about these pants is that the pants are not tapered. If you have the pants tailored, you can get them to fit you exactly how you want. If you don’t typically wear slim fit pants, this shouldn’t be an issue for you.

The pants contain 97% nylon and 3% spandex. If you weren’t sure what their original stretch fabric is, this is it!

You can use these pants for almost every occasion. They’d be good for hikes, climbs, casual Saturdays, office attire and for riding a bike.

These travel pants are more traditional, so they're good for someone who likes a slim fit that's not a skinny jean. prAna's commitment to sustainability is awesome, so sustainable shoppers will like the Brion.

prAna Stretch Zion

The Stretch Zion pants are a great option for hiking and a more comfortable travel experience. They are classified as technical pants, which I believe speaks to their ability to offer features such as an adjustable waist, stretchy material, an inseam gusset and roll-up snaps.

If you’re more adventurous, the Zion pants will help you perform better in your activity of choice. If you like to travel with a pair of pants and feel like you can do anything in them, then the prAna Stretch Zion would be a great option for you.

A stretchier Brion travel pant, these performance pants are made of recycled nylon and have a ventilated gusset, which is great for active days or a workday that turns into a hike day.

Icebreaker Merino Shifter

Icebreaker is known among the serious traveler crowd because of their quality and their use of merino wool.

Merino wool is one of the best materials to use for clothes. You can wear merino wool several times and the smell never really knocks your socks off. Well, unless they are socks, and you take them off.

Sustainability is a big part of their philosophy and core values as a company. They also make other great items for travelers, like their well-known socks, shirts and hats.

Icebreaker Merino Shifter

How are Icebreaker Merino Shifter pants?

Their pants are solid. Icebreaker has a few options for pants, and I’ll focus on their Merino Shifter Pants .

I think they’re interesting to highlight because this is a case in which this might be your secondary pair of pants. Although I typically like to travel with a single pair of paints, I can see having a second pair.

Traveling with two pairs of pants is good if one is in the wash or is wet from the rain. It would also be good in case you lose a pair of pants (is that possible?).

When would you use Icebreaker Merino Shifter Pants?

If you have the capacity for multiple pairs of pants or if you aren’t traveling full-time , these are still great pants to have.

They’re super cozy and have numerous uses. You can take them on a run during a cold day, be warm while relaxing around your house, pretend these are “adult pants” and wear them to work and more!

You might have a harder time in tailoring these; however, you might not need to because the pants are already tapered. They also have an excellent stretchy material called LYCRA® that helps a lot with the mobility and “stretchability.”

Rhone Commuter

The Rhone Commuter are not your generic “travel pants.” They appear to be from the outside, but when you dig a little deeper, they have some nice features.

Rhone Commuter pants

How can travel pants have features?

The Rhone Commuters come with a few things that can be useful for someone who travels a lot. They have a snap button, back pocket zipper, phone pocket, articulated knee and a gusset. Why are these useful features?

A snap button is useful for times when you only have one hand available. It’s also more comfortable, in my opinion. Back zipper pockets are helpful to keep things from falling out. I explained more details about this below! I like the phone (or media) pockets for phones and phone-sized-things, like passports. Having an articulated knee in a pair of pants is only useful if you’re doing a lot of movement.

One of the best features about buying Rhone pants is their ability to hem your pants. Not needing to hem these pants yourself saves a trip to a tailor and makes them a bit more custom when they get to you.

Wait, what’s a gusset?

A gusset is a piece of fabric in the undercarriage of the pants that reinforces the area and helps prevent the ripping of your pants.

These commuter pants make a great travel option because they include a few important features, namely a zipper pocket and mobility gusset, that make them all-star travel chinos.

Mountain Hardwear Men’s AP Pant

Mountain Hardware is a well-known outdoor brand. I first heard about them because of their jackets. Their Hardwear AP™ pants are their flagship hiking and climbing pants. Can pants have a flagship model? I guess so!

They’re mostly cotton and nylon. Most people don’t like cotton for travel clothes, but I don’t mind it. I think that cotton gets better with age and is more comfortable. It doesn’t usually do well in wet weather, though.

Mountain Hardwear Men's AP Pant

What to expect wearing Mountain Hardwear AP™ Pants

You can expect normal pants-wearing-things with these. Aside from covering your legs, you’ll find zip pockets, articulated knees, reflective strips and a cell phone pocket. The reflective strips are useful when you roll up the bottoms of the pants. When you’re on a bike, it’s an extra protective measure for being seen in darker conditions.

travel comfort jeans

Standout features for the Men's AP pant are that they look more like hiking pants that have a decent side, so that you can walk into a brewery after the hike during your trip, and avoid looking messy.

Public Rec Every Day Jogger

Public Rec is a ‘leisure for everywhere’ brand specializing in soft and breathable products for men. I tried out their “All Day Every Day” (ADED for short) jogger, which is a style tailored for travel and comfort.

travel comfort jeans

What can you expect from the Public Rec jogger?

At first glance, the jogger looks like a tailored type of sweatpants, but it’s more than that. From far away, these pants look great. I almost wanted to wear these to work! Now that I work from home , I can wear them to work. There’s an elastic waistband with internal drawstring, along with front and back zipper pockets that you can keep some crucial items in during travel.

In order to not be confused with sweatpants, the joggers have a faux front fly for a more formal look. While you probably wouldn’t wear these right from the plane to a business meeting, you could for sure wear them for a day of sightseeing and feel pretty put-together.

What do the Public Rec Every Day Joggers feel like?

The joggers are a spandex-nylon blend, which makes them breathable and not a bad choice if you’ll potentially be perspiring.

Public Rec Every Day Jogger

Do you need the Public Rec Every Day Joggers?

Probably. If you like to wear pants that are not jeans when you’re in transit, and if you still want to look decent, then yes: you need the Public Rec joggers for men.

The Public Rec jogger will be the closest thing you can find to a stretchy pair of pants that will be comfortable, won’t wrinkle and will look pretty okay after 24 hours in transit (like on a flight).

Another question is: do you need the Public Rec joggers for a woman in your life? Maybe you do! This is a pair of travel pants in this list that also has a women’s version: the women’s All Day Joggers from Public Rec , and my wife Becca approves of them.

Can you run in the Public Rec Every Day Joggers?

Yes! In colder weather (below freezing) I like to run in pants. For me, shorts are ok as long as the temperatures are above freezing. On some of the coldest days of the year, I decided to research what types of pants to buy for cold weather running. I enjoyed all of the suggestions, but I like to utilize items that I already own.

I took the Public Rec Every Day Joggers out for a run and it was great! I stayed really warm, in fact, I was actually too warm at the end of my run.

There is a security pocket on the left side, which was perfect for holding my phone during my run. I typically have a lightweight running belt but it wasn’t needed when I was wearing these pants — all thanks to that pocket!

Public Rec all day every day joggers product photo.

All Day Every Day Jogger

One of my favorite aspects of these joggers is that it's possible to work out in them, and also wear them on a plane and around a city. For joggers, they have a tapered and decent look to them, and come in nice colors.

Foehn Men’s Brise Schoeller Pant

These Brise Schoeller Pants are going to be your pick for anything active. The pants are designed for everything. Because they are so adaptable, these may one of the only pair of pants you need to bring on a trip. As an update, Foehn reported that they have “updated the fit” on the current version of the Brise, so please re-check your sizing on the product page !

Brise schoeller pant product photo.

Do you need the Brise Schoeller Pant?

Maybe. You can find mechanically wicking material, which is great hot weather. The stretch fabric it perfect for times when you need to be a little more active than sitting on a couch or an airplane. The material is truly quality and all of the zippers found on the pants are YKK zippers. Knowing what I know about the Foehn brand, they don’t make too many products, because they take pride in and want to excel in each one.

What features should you look out for when choosing your next pair of travel pants?

Zipper pockets can help keep your valuables safe.

No matter how careful you are, it’s always a possibility that you can get pick-pocketed. Zipper pockets are an easy way to protect yourself from someone reaching into your pockets and snatching your phone or wallet.

With everyday use, zipper pockets are also great for making sure you don’t lose valuable items that you keep in your pockets!

Depending on what you’re doing, you need to put a lot of trust into regular pockets for making sure you don’t lose anything. It’s really easy for a phone or wallet to slide out if you’re traveling all day and get up from a chair or bench. Having a little extra security can really go a long way.

What pants with zipper pockets do I recommend?

Check out a quick list of pants with zipper pockets. Even if you are not traveling, pants with zipper pockets truly help in all occasions. They are great for hiking, biking, commuting or walking around.

Pants with zipper pockets

Hidden pockets are an extra layer of protection

You might want hidden pockets (or inside) pockets if you really want to feel secure about keeping your valuables close to you. Alternatively, you could also look for a money belt.

Secret pockets are a great place to stash things like your travel documents, your keys or phone. Hidden pockets may also have a zipper that can help when you take off your pants and forget something is inside of the pockets.

Articulated knees make pants more comfortable

Having articulated knees built into pants is an interesting feature. They help to avoid having your pants bunched up or cutting off circulation. It makes it easier to go into a full squat as well. Having this feature in pants is a useful for hiking and going to the gym. The stitching pattern gives off a “travel pants” vibe.

I suspect that custom-fitting pants with articulated knees might introduce some challenges for the tailor (or Becca’s mom). For these types of pants, I take the stance that they’re specifically for hiking and that they don’t require any custom fitting.

Cell phone pockets protect your phone

I generally like cell phone pockets because it means more pockets for other things. When you travel, sometimes you have odd items. It’s not uncommon to have a passport with you while you’re out, or to have an oddly-shaped piece of paper. Using such a pocket for those items is often a better idea than using it for your cell phone.

Stretchy material

Any pants that have some type of spandex built into the fabric is a nice touch in making your pants more comfortable. You’ll see a benefit of extra mobility and the pants will be more forgiving for different situations.

Why should you trust me?

Pants are a staple item in my travel gear. I often travel with one pair of pants to help save space in my luggage. When I find a pair of pants that I like, I make that decision based on quality and functionality.

Additionally, I look for pants that provide utility, like to help prevent pickpockets !

I traveled long-term for a year in each of 2016-2017 and 2018-2019. I’ve traveled to 30+ countries and have lived out of only a backpack while working remotely for many months! I take travel pants seriously and I have used that knowledge to make this list.

Jeans are a necessity for most trips, but they take up a lot of space in a suitcase, so most travelers wind up wearing them on the plane—which means the denim must be comfortable enough to sleep sitting up in. Upon arrival, the jeans must maintain their shape through multiple wears, all while looking stylish and pulled together. That’s a big challenge for a simple pair of pants, but fortunately, we’ve found options that fit the bill.

From denim that’s guaranteed to always fit to fleece-lined skinnies, these are the best jeans for travel.

Mott & Bow Slim Grand Jeans

Best Travel Jeans For Women

There are several reasons to wear stylish and lightweight jeans for travel .

  • They are well-matched.
  • They look attractive.
  • You’ll fit in with the rest of the town.
  • They are also so comfortable.
  • They’re simple to dress up for city wear or a night out.
  • They’re long-lasting and durable.
  • No one would care if you made them dirty.

If you are in a hurry Resfeber’s ripped jeans might be the right choice with a 4.2 rating out of 5.

Here are some basic points that we need to consider when buying the most comfortable jeans for women.

  • Fabric That Is Easy To Clean And Dries Quickly : Travel pants that are easy to clean are ideal. Washing your clothes when traveling can be difficult; in reality, the sink in your hotel bathroom can be your only choice.
  • Pockets : Pockets are one of the common and important things that must-have in the best travel trousers. Even better, look for security pockets in women’s travel jeans, which are concealed and protected with zippers or velcro. Travel pants should have an internal velcro pocket for papers and money, as well as for smartphones and other things.
  • It should Be lightweight : It’s best if your pants aren’t too lightweight. The best lightweight travel pants are easy to wear as well as keep your luggage weight to a minimum. The best outfits are those that you don’t even notice you’re wearing .
  • The Weather : The best ladies’ travel pants are made of breathable, moisture-wicking fabric that absorbs moisture when you sweat. If you’re going to the tropics, this is particularly necessary because you don’t want your pants to stick to your body as the temperature increases.
  • Color : Find a pair of light travel pants in a color that hides dirt well. Natural colors are better at covering dirty spots than white or black jeans.
  • Wrinkle-Free fabric : Wrinkle-free Travel pants are ideal. You won’t find an iron lying around unless you’re staying in a nice hotel, and let’s face it, why would you want to waste your travel time behind an ironing board?
  • It Should Look Great : Even the best lightweight women’s travel pants can, of course, look fine! Not only must they be multi-functional and flexible, but you’ll also want them to be trendy if possible, as this will allow you to use them for a wider range of occasions.
  • Fit And Comfort : The pants should be a good match. Isn’t this self-evident? You’ll get them stuck in your sandals or trip over them in your hiking boots if they’re too long. Test the waistband as well. If it doesn’t have any elastic, it should be big and comfortable at least.
  • Long-Lasting Materials : Travel pants are likely to be worn repeatedly, even regularly on certain journeys, so choose a pair that is made of high-quality fabric and won’t tear after a few uses. Look for pants with good denim and, if necessary, reinforcements.
  • Weather Resistant : If you’re going to the snow or anywhere with a chance of rain, make sure you pack pants that will keep you dry underneath. Check the weather forecast before you pack.

The Most Comfortable Jeans for Travel, According to Our Editors

Jeans on a plane? Some might cringe at the thought of it. AGOLDE Women’s Remy High-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans

AGOLDE Women’s Remy High-Rise Straight-Leg Jeans

“I absolutely love jeans and wear them pretty much every day, including when I fly. Agolde is one of my favorite brands for denim, so I recently put their Remy jeans to the test during a six-hour flight from NYC to LA. It was surprisingly the most comfortable flight I can recall. My denim preference is the perfect mix of not too stretchy and not too stiff; a slim, straight leg; and the higher-waisted, the better. The Remy jean hits all of these boxes. Every high-waist jeans lover knows the feeling of having to undo a top button and constantly readjust to try to get comfortable, but somehow none of that was necessary with these, even with their 11.5-inch front rise. I didn’t think about the jeans at all—I didn’t even notice them—which to me is an impressive sign of comfort.”

Levi’s Men’s 512™ Slim Taper Fit Jeans

Levi’s Men’s 512™ Slim Taper Fit Jeans

“Whenever I go on a trip, my main concern is saving room in my suitcase and taking as little as I can—there’s always so much to buy on vacation! Unfortunately that usually means wearing my jeans instead of packing them. For years I would only wear my raw, unwashed denim on a flight, even though it was SUPER uncomfortable the whole trip. But last year I read an article about how good the Levi’s 512s are and thought I would give them a try. Let’s just say I’m never wearing my raw denim on a plane again. These are easily the most comfortable jeans I’ve ever owned thanks to the elastane and low rise. The best part is that they still look super stylish with a slim fit in the thigh and a tapered leg.”

— David Hattan, Photo Editor

J.Crew Women’s Point Sur Slouchy Boyfriend Jeans

J.Crew Women’s Point Sur Slouchy Boyfriend Jeans

“First, a confession: rarely do I wear jeans when traveling. I’m more of a leggings kind of girl, especially when it comes to long-haul flights that I anticipate sleeping through. However, for domestic routes and more outdoorsy trips where I’ll be exposed to the elements, J.Crew denim gets the job done. The Point Sur boyfriend jean is loose and has that “lived-in” vibe—something I specifically look for since I don’t wear denim that often—and the roomy hem gives my ankles and shoes breathing room. Having jeans that look great even with the bottoms rolled up is essential because of my short frame. This style does run large, so definitely size down if you’re looking for a snugger fit.”

DL1961 Women’s Mara Ankle High Rise Straight Jeans

DL1961 Women’s Mara Ankle High Rise Straight Jeans

“I’m used to wearing leggings or cute sweats when I travel, so to test out jeans on the plane, I went for a pair with plenty of stretch: DL1961’s Mara jean . It’s part of the brand’s “Instasculpt” collection , designed with a slimming, supporting fit that’s super comfy. Wearing these, I could move around freely without the waistband cutting into my stomach, and I didn’t feel constricted at all throughout the legs. Another plus for DL1961: the brand prioritizes sustainability in their production processes, using biodegradable fibers, solar energy, and significantly less water.”

— Jackie Homan, Style Travel Editor

DUER Men’s Weightless Denim Beachcomber Jeans

DUER Men’s Weightless Denim Beachcomber Jeans

“When it comes to flying, if I’m not comfortable, I’m not boarding. With that being said, never will I ever wear a pair of jeans on an airplane that aren’t DUER’s Weightless Denim Beachcomber jeans . They have the stylish design that classic denim offers, but combined with moisture-wicking microfibers and a powerful stretch, these jeans feel as great as they look.”

— Tyler Schoeber, Production Specialist

7 For All Mankind Women’s Dojo Bootcut Jeans

7 For All Mankind Women’s Dojo Bootcut Jeans

“I’m always cold on a plane, so I prefer a bootcut jean that covers as much leg as possible. This pair from 7 for All Mankind is super comfortable and warm, and the color is a little darker than my usual, so they feel more elegant.”

— Clara Sedlak, Executive Editor

The ’90s Cheeky Straight Jean

Everlane The ’90s Cheeky Straight Jean

“The general consensus seems to be that jeans need stretch in order to be comfortable. I, on the other hand, like mine with little to none, and still wear jeans every time I travel (as well as pretty much every other day of the year). I guess the key is to not feel constricted, which is why I love the roomier cut on these Everlane jeans . They’re high-waisted but still comfortable, not super heavy, and give me a great butt. They’re the perfect shade of that lived-in light blue, too.”

The Best Travel Jeans for Men and Women: The Ultimate Guide

In the vast realm of travel gear, one item that has proven exceptionally elusive is the perfect pair of travel jeans. Picture this: you're gearing up for a long flight, faced with the daunting task of selecting an outfit that strikes a delicate balance between comfort and style. Sweatpants, undoubtedly cozy, lack the fashion-forward appeal you desire, while trendy jeans, though visually appealing, often leave you feeling confined and uncomfortable.

If you've experienced this dilemma firsthand, you understand the frustration that comes with the quest for travel jeans that seamlessly merge comfort and style. The struggle is real, leaving even seasoned adventurers feeling disheartened by the lack of suitable options available. But, worry not! Whether you're searching for lightweight jeans for travel, comfy women's jeans, comfortable jeans options for men, or the most stylish designs for men, we have you covered. Our range offers various styles and fits to make your next adventure a breeze.

In this informative article, we will explore the realm of comfortable travel jeans, presenting a variety of options for both men and women. We will explore important factors that can assist you in making a well-informed decision.

The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Travel Jeans: Key Factors to Consider

Traveling can be tough on your wardrobe, but with the right pair of jeans, you can stay comfortable and stylish no matter where you go. What should you look for when choosing the best travel jeans for your next adventure? Here are some things to consider:

One of the most important factors to consider when buying travel jeans is comfort. Look for jeans that are made of lightweight and breathable fabric, with a bit of stretch to ensure a comfortable fit. You don't want to be stuck in stiff, restrictive jeans on a long flight or a hike.

Durability and easy maintenance

When it comes to travel jeans, durability and easy maintenance are crucial. Look for reinforced stitching, sturdy hardware, and the convenience of machine-washability and quick drying. Mott & Bow jeans excel in these aspects. They rarely require washing, but when needed, they can be easily machine washed. Pre-washed and pre-shrunk, our jeans retain their shape, color, and quality even after multiple washes. Simply turn them inside out, machine wash in cold water, and tumble dry or hang dry. In our jeans you’ll discover hassle-free travel pants that’ll remain in excellent condition throughout your adventures.

While the importance of comfort and durability cannot be overstated when it comes to travel jeans, the desire to look good is equally crucial. After all, who wouldn't want to rock their travel outfits and capture Instagram-worthy pictures during their adventures?

When selecting your ideal pair of travel jeans, consider not only their comfort and durability but also their style and cut, and make sure they match your personal style. Skinny jeans may not be the most comfortable option for everyone, while relaxed-fit jeans may not be the most flattering. Find a style that works for you and makes you feel confident on the road.

Versatility

When packing for a trip, space is at a premium. Look for travel jeans that are versatile and can be worn in a variety of settings. Dark wash jeans are a great option, as they can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Also, consider the climate and activities you'll be doing on your trip. Lightweight, breathable jeans are great for warm destinations, while jeans with a bit more insulation are perfect for cooler weather.

Travel can be expensive, so you don't want to break the bank on a pair of jeans. Look for travel jeans that are reasonably priced and offer good value for your money. Keep in mind that investing in a quality pair of travel jeans will save you money in the long run, as you won't have to constantly replace them.

To sum it up, when shopping for travel jeans look for comfort, durability, style and versatility, and keep your budget in mind. By considering these factors, you'll be able to find the perfect pair of jeans to accompany you on your next adventure.

Comfortable Travel Jeans Do Exist—We Found the Best 10

best-jeans-for-travel-275675-1546801334009-main

Jeans —we can't live with them; we can't live without them. Sure, they're staples, but when it comes to actual comfort, they sometimes fall flat. Therefore it comes to no surprise that jeans aren't our first choice when planning a travel outfit. When traveling, you want an outfit that doesn't restrict your movements, and a bottom that has a button stabbing into your gut doesn't sound very alluring, no matter your travel situation

Leggings are always there to save the day, but not all jeans are created equal, so it's important to look for comfortable travel jeans, which do actually exist. All you have to do is shy away from non-stretch fabric and you're good to go. Stretch and lightweight denim are true game changers, and once you find a pair that hugs you just right but doesn't stab you or cut your circulation, your travel outfits will never be the same—in the best way.

Instead of scouring the Internet for another pair of vintage high-waisted jeans (would Marie Kondo approve of your impulse buys?), consider investing in a pair of jeans that you know you’ll wear every time you want to switch up your go-to travel leggings for something more elevated but just as comfortable. Ahead find the 10 best travel jeans you don’t want to pass up on.

How To Choose The Best Women’s Travel Jeans?

There are several things to take into account while selecting the best jeans to ensure comfort, style, and usefulness. The following advice will help you choose the ideal pair of jeans.

When searching for the perfect pair of jeans to accompany you on your travels, it’s essential to prioritize comfort and mobility. Opt for jeans crafted from a fabric blend designed to provide both stretch and flexibility. A fantastic choice often includes the combination of breathable cotton coupled with a hint of spandex or elastane. This thoughtful fusion not only guarantees a comfortable fit but also ensures that your jeans move with you effortlessly throughout your journeys. Whether you’re navigating bustling airport terminals, exploring new cities, or embarking on adventurous hikes, this fabric blend becomes your trusted companion, allowing you to move freely and without constraint. It’s the perfect harmony between fashion and functionality, enabling you to experience every moment of your travels with comfort and ease.

Consider the fit as the fundamental building block of your wardrobe. When it comes to choosing the perfect pair of jeans, it’s essential to meticulously evaluate and select the one that complements your body type and resonates with your unique personal style. There’s a diverse range of fits to explore, each with its own distinctive charm and appeal. You can opt for the classic straight-leg jeans, exuding timeless elegance and versatility, or embrace the fashionable flair of bootcut jeans, adding a touch of drama to your silhouette. Alternatively, if you prefer a sleek and tailored appearance, the slim-fit jeans hug your curves in all the right places. The key is to choose a fit that not only accentuates your physical attributes but also evokes a sense of confidence and empowerment, allowing you to stride through life with style and self-assurance. So, take your time, experiment with different fits, and discover the one that makes you feel truly remarkable.

Size and length are crucial factors to consider when choosing the perfect pair of pants or trousers. It’s imperative to make sure that you select the size that matches your body’s unique proportions, as an ill-fitting pair can be uncomfortable and unflattering. Pay close attention to the inseam length, which is the measurement from the crotch to the hem of the pants. Finding the right inseam length is essential because it determines how the pants will drape on your legs. Ideally, it would be best to choose a pair with an inseam length that allows you to wear them with various types of shoes, whether ankle sneakers for a casual look or stylish boots for a more elevated appearance. This versatility ensures that your pants can adapt to different occasions and shoe choices, making them a valuable addition to your wardrobe. So, when shopping for pants, prioritize finding the perfect size and length to achieve both comfort and style.

The travel denim is specially engineered to deliver super soft cotton with maximum comfort stretch that keeps you moving from one adventure to the next now in a straight fit.

The most adaptable color is dark indigo, which can be worn both casually and formally with sneakers and a t-shirt or dressed up with a blazer and loafers. Dark indigo jeans are an excellent alternative to chinos on casual days if you work in an office where the dress is business casual.

Due to their flattering and secure fit, individuals typically find mid- to high-rise jeans more comfortable than low-rise jeans. Mid-rise jeans typically have a rise of seven to eleven inches and fall just below the belly button. It’s a well-liked mid-range option that provides a secure fit without going too high or low.

Editor’s Note: We updated this guide on March 11, 2024, to add our new line-up of travel pants for the year, including our new best overall pick, the Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants , as well as a fresh selection of new and old favorites.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Best Overall Men’s Travel Pants: Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants
  • Best Budget Men’s Travel Pants: UNIONBAY Rainier Travel Chinos
  • Best Travel Pants for Adventuring In: LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pants

  • Most Comfortable Travel Pants: Proof 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant

Bluffworks Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants

  • Fabric 57% recycled polyester, 33% polyester, 10% spandex
  • Fabric weight 210 gsm
  • Fit True to size
  • Weight 15 oz.

Product Badge

  • Lightweight fabric dries quickly
  • Wrinkle resistant
  • Looks and feels more recreational than the Ascenders
  • Anti-UV properties
  • More comfortable than most pants on the list
  • The rear device pocket is uncomfortable to sit on a phone in the back phone pocket
  • Lacks a DWR

Bluffworks’ Ascender Chino has been at or near the top of our travel pants list for four years now. Our main gripe with the Ascender is the heavy lean into the business side of “business casual.” That and the sheer number of pockets sometimes confounded our sleep-deprived travel brains. But now with fewer pockets and less golf-course chino, Bluffworks nailed the perfect travel pants with their Envoy Lightweight Travel Pants iteration ($125).

Trimming the fat started with the pockets. The Envoy drops a pocket to give us nine, but all are functional, and five of them zip shut. Two stealth pockets zip inside the hand pockets, both rear pockets zip shut, and a device pocket zips closed off the thigh and is a great place to store your documents.

Behind the right rear pocket, the Envoy tucks a drop-in style phone pocket below the waistband. This is a brilliant design that is easy to access, yet deep enough to curb sticky fingers. We did find it more comfortable to store the phone on the thigh when seated.

The Envoys close shut with a zippered fly and metal button sewn into the elastic, belt-friendly waistband. In case you left the belt at home, silicone tabs are welded to the inside of the waistband and help keep the pants from shifting down.

Instead of a 100% durable polyester fabric found in the Ascender Chino, the Envoy is constructed from a recycled polyester spun with 10% spandex, giving the pants a 4-way stretch. On the inside, all seams are overlocked and tacked down with a double stitch on the inseam to keep them from rubbing against the skin and reducing exposure to snags. The pants wear light and supple, and given that they don’t have a gusset sewn into the crotch, we found the Envoys very flexible if not the most comfortable pants on our list.

And that’s really where the Envoys shine. If nothing else, a travel pant should go unnoticed — both on you and among potential troublemakers. These pants wear effortlessly, yet are capable of storing all your essentials safely away.

If you haven’t tried Bluffworks before, we recommend looking at the Envoy Lightweights over the Ascenders. While the Ascenders have one more pocket (a passport sleeve on the inside of the left front pocket), only three of the 10 pockets zip shut. The styling of the Envoy has five pockets that zip shut and wears more casually without compromising its city chops.

UNIONBAY Rainier Travel Chinos

  • Fabric 94% nylon, 6% spandex
  • Fabric weight 173 gsm
  • Weight 13 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Comfortable
  • Security options
  • Well priced
  • Pants run long
  • Material tends to collect lint

Travel should never be about the gear. It should be about the experience. An Amazon darling, at $40 a pair, UNIONBAY’s Rainier Travel Pants are a steal, leaving more cash in the wallet for traveling.

True to size, the nylon-spandex blend offers just enough stretch for a full range of motion. The pants keep around the waist with a button and have traditional belt loops if you want to class them up with a belt.

Three nylon zipper pockets pair with deep hand pockets. With two in the back and one on the upper right leg, they’re big enough to secure a passport, the latest iPhone, a notepad, or all of them together.

The Rainiers are rated to 50 UPF and feel durable in the hand, making them acceptable for activities like hiking. The outermost layer is lightly brushed and tends to collect lint and show stains quicker than other pants we tested, but they wash up easily and the 170 gsm fabric is quick to dry.

While a simple pant when compared to the Bluffworks attention to detail, these chino-style pants hit the core elements we looked for when evaluating the best men’s travel pants. If you’re looking for a budget pair of travel pants that pack up tight and breeze from the tarmac to restaurants (and maybe a light hike in between), these are it.

The Rainiers are available in four colors: charcoal, navy, black, and khaki.

LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pants

  • Fabric 70% Blue Ocean nylon, 25% nylon, 5% spandex

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Form and function meet the apex pant
  • Bomber hardware
  • Tons of pockets with versatile security options
  • DWR is negligible
  • Styling is less formal

LIVSN’s Ecotrek Trail Pant  ($129) brings more stretch, lighter weight, and a more athletic design to their tried and true Flex Canvas Pants. And while these new pants are great for climbing, hiking, or other fast-paced activities in warmer climates, we find they hit all the marks for what we love in travel pants too.

Let’s start with the many pockets, most of which are zippered. Both rear pockets close with a zipper, offering some much-needed peace of mind. Angling off the back of the left thigh is an additional, horizontal zippered pocket, which is great for gadgets or a small wallet.

Both of the mesh hand pockets have coin sleeves to prevent loose currency or keys from shifting around, and the left front hand pocket has a hidden zippered pocket large enough to protect your phone. Rounding out the seven pockets is a reinforced multitool pocket sitting on the right thigh. With so many pocket options, there’s a place for everything that feels designed with purpose instead of over-engineered.

The pocket configuration is dialed, but what sells these pants are the little details. The fabric’s synthetic blend doesn’t feel stiff, and the smartly tailored material walks quietly, fitting our testers with an ergonomic, yet surprisingly athletic fit.

A metal button closes the front and is backed with a leather pledget to prevent busting out. The Ecotrek Trail pants have belt loops, but if you forget your belt, they include a drawstring that hides inside the waistband. The cuffs are reinforced around the heel and so is the utility tool pocket.

While they don’t have a robust DWR, the material breathes very well. When things heat up, the pant legs roll up and keep under a buttoned strap that’s been sewn with reflective tape. These little details add up pretty quickly to make the Ecotrek a stellar pant.

Turn the pants inside out, and you really get an appreciation for the quality and care taken to make these pants. All seams are overlocked, with the flat-felled inseam. This kind of stitching increases durability where you need it and comfort where you want it.

Sustainability is core to LIVSN’s line of clothes, and the  Ecotrek Trail pant  walks the talk. The material is woven from Oceanflex fabric (70% recycled fishing buoys recovered from the ocean), and the YKK zipper taping is made from recycled ocean plastic. The rest is 25% nylon and 5% spandex for stretch.

If you are looking for lightweight, stretchy, durable pants, the LIVSN Ecotrek Trail Pant stands out as one of the best men’s travel pants on the market and can tackle a wide range of activities.

The Ecotrek Trail pants are available in olive, caramel, and charcoal colors, and they come in a range of sizes up to a 40-inch waist and a 34-inch inseam.

Western Rise Evolution 2 Pants

  • Fabric 90% nylon, 10% elastane, woven in Sweden, cut and sewn in the USA
  • Fabric weight 107 gsm
  • Weight 11 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Lightweight material breathes just as well as the first
  • More durability than the first iteration
  • Fantastic fit and construction
  • Better mobility than the first iteration
  • New fabric feels slightly stiffer (breaks in over time)
  • Patch on the inside pocket can feel sticky against the legs (they are changing it to a print)
  • Single security pocket is limiting for some travelers

The first iteration of the Evolution was a GearJunkie staple around the office. Simple, functional, durable — it’s what we recommended to all our friends who ask us, “What’s the best pant for everyday use?” This year, Western Rise updated the Evolution 2.0 ($128) with more stretch, and they are only all the better for it.

This new bump in elastane gives the Evolution 2.0 significant four-way stretch and increased flexibility without sacrificing durability. The jean-like five-pocket design wears more like denim but has the durability of a hiking pant. In fact, one of our editors wore their pair to the top of the Grand Teton.

At the core of the pant is the nylon-elastane blend with a trim jean cut. The nylon fibers are softened by running them through an air-texturized process and then weaving them into a dynamic yarn. The material has a durable weave that mimics denim (and feels less “khaki”).

The DWR coating — or maybe DBR (Durable Beer Resistance) — is outstanding. We wore these pants to Oktoberfest last year where they took the brunt of the fickle Bavarian weather and a rowdy beer hall.

Reach around back, and you’ll find a double pocket on the right, with a hidden zipper pocket that’s large enough to swallow your passport. Western Rise expanded the front coin pocket and made it big enough to holster the largest phone on the market.

After your trip, roll them up and watch them disappear in your luggage. They tick all the boxes for traveling and were the envy of our photographer while cycling through Colombia.

There aren’t many reasons to ding the Evolutions; the material on the new pant feels stiff out of the box but that softens up over time. To help differentiate its pant models (which all have a similar cut and color), Western Rise screened a patch on the inner left pocket. It can feel a little sweaty against the legs.

Aware of this issue, Western Rise is changing that label to a print going forward. One thing that hasn’t changed is the pocket configuration. Some will find the additional zipper pocket just the right amount of added security. Others will prefer more pockets to keep their EDCs. And that’s where we find the Evolution falls short. An extra security pocket would send this pant to the top of the list again.

If you want that Western Rise styling but with a wrinkle-resistant fabric, the Diversion pant ($168) is also a great pick. The double-knit canvas weighs 286 gsm, making it more durable overall but sacrificing packability.

If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This fantastic five-pocket jean-style pant has been on our list of the best men’s travel pants for 6 years now. For 2 of those years, they were our top pick. We use the Western Rise Evolution 2.0s as a benchmark for fit and comfort and we recommend them to friends looking for a do-everything pant that flies fashionably under the radar.

Proof 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant

  • Fabric 47% merino wool, 33% nylon, 14% polyester, 6% elastane
  • Fabric weight 247 gsm
  • Weight 16.5 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Gusseted crotch
  • Good fit and stretch
  • Pricey — $200 can buy you two (or three) other pants on the list
  • Weighs an ounce or two more than other similar pants
  • Lacks a dedicated device pocket

Merino pants? 100%. Proof is Huckberry’s in-house performance wear, with the 72-Hour line as their go-to travel clothes under the Proof name. New this year, Huckberry released the 72-Hour Travel Pant ($198), and while expensive, it has a lot of merits. We learned it’s all in the fabric.

Wool has natural antimicrobial, DWR, and UPF protection characteristics that we usually laud about when discussing base layers . Because wool wicks moisture, the pants breathe well and keep you feeling dry even in hot climates and sticky bus rides. It keeps the stench down and the comfort high. All things we look for when traveling.

This is the first merino wool pant we’ve seriously considered, and it makes a lot of sense. If you are going far with limited space, you need to trim the fat. And while cutting out extra shirts and pants may once have been a questionable decision, it’s a lot easier when one pair of pants delivers so well.

The design team gave some thoughtful reflection to the 72-Hour pant. Complimenting the five-pocket design is a hidden zippered pocket inside the right rear pocket. The panels are sewn together with a combination of comfortable overstitched inseams, flat-sewn gussets, and durable flat-felled side seams.

The pants are sewn together with a combination of flat-felled and welted overlocked joints, then finished with a robust DWR. All this tech stays under the radar with black hardware finishes.

As styling goes, we find the Proof 72-Hour Travel Pant to be on par with Western Rise’s Evolution 2’s, which around the office we can agree are one of the best styled pants available today. The comfort award, however, goes to the Proofs.

Teren Lightweight Traveler Pants

  • Fabric 88% nylon, 12% spandex
  • Fabric weight 154 gsm

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Pre-treated with an insect repellant
  • Stain resistant
  • Internal drawstring for extra waist security
  • Three zipper-closed pockets
  • Lightweight
  • Tanto-style pocket to clip your EDC
  • Magnetic closure catches on anything metal
  • No durable water repellant finish

Threading the needle between style, function, and durability, Teren’s Lightweight Traveler ($130) is our pick for folks who want one pant to do it all.

The Lightweight Traveler is a tapered chino-style pant with six pockets. Three pockets secure your goods with a zipper. Two zip shut vertically behind the front pockets and the third secures the right back pocket. The pants are washed in Permethrin to ward off critters. Plus, they’re antimicrobial, stain resistant, and offer UV protection.

Our editor Chris Carter wore his Lightweight Travelers on the Continental Divide thru-hike, where they withstood miles of intense bushwhacking through thorny, overgrown trails and post-holing through deep snow. Carter lauded the pants’ ability to stay stench-free for weeks on end.

After the adventure is done, the stain-release fabric readily releases dirt and grime in the wash. These chinos easily suit up for a night on the town.

The Lightweight Travelers ditch the classic button and use a pair of sewn-in magnets to close around the waist. While wearing the pants around town and doing weekend chores, the magnetic closure often got stuck on metal objects.

They snapped to my grocery cart, to my truck bed, to my knife, to loose screws while repairing my gate. Curious about the strength, I went into my garage and started hanging hardware off the pants. The magnet is strong enough to hold a hammer.

But, lean over to tie your shoes (or eat a big meal) and the magnetic fasteners slide apart easily. Stand up, and they pull right back together.

Yeah, the magnetic closure is different and takes some getting used to. Is it problematic? Maybe. The gauss, or magnetic induction, could demagnetize small metal springs in mechanical watches. Given the most popular watch is a smartwatch — this isn’t an issue for most of us. But magnets can also demagnetize credit cards and hotel room keys. We didn’t try to demagnetize a credit card, but it’s something to consider when zipping items in the front pockets.

Worried about the magnet holding the pants up? Backed with belt loops and an internal drawstring, the pants have plenty of options to keep them around the waist.

Other issues: The offset zippered front pockets drop into the same front hand pocket sleeve. They fight for the same real estate, compromising overall storage. We found these pockets a little challenging to access while seated in tight spaces.

For those looking for rain or spill protection, the Terens don’t sport a durable water repellant (DWR). But they do dry out quickly.

With so many pros, these are small cons. The spandex weave yields significant mobility while the nylon deflects catches and tears — all while keeping the pants just over 10 ounces. It’s a great combination of durability and flexibility in a quick-drying pant that packs down small. At 11 ounces, the Lightweight Traveler is truly lightweight, competing only with Western Rise’s Evolution 2’s.

KÜHL Suppressor Jogger

  • Fabric 85% nylon, 15% spandex
  • Fabric weight 165 gsm
  • Weight 12 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Light and packable
  • Durable and stretchy
  • KÜHL drop in style pockets are fantastic
  • Fabric is noisy
  • No button-no fly minimalism may not appeal to everyone
  • Only one zippered pocket on the backside

KÜHL has a strong reputation throughout the outdoor industry for making bomber, thoughtfully designed pieces. And its sub-$100 Suppressor Joggers exemplify those qualities in spades.

The 85% nylon, 15% spandex blend is lightweight, stretchy, breathable, and durable. Plus, a solid DWR treatment rebuffs Mother Nature’s fickle temperament.

Like any good pair of travel pants, the Suppressor’s sport well-thought-out pockets. The angled hand pockets are deep and easy to access while seated. A single stealth pocket zips behind the right back side, and drop-in pockets grace both thighs.

Drop-in pockets are our favorite design to haul devices. They snug the phone but keep your data within reach. The best of the batch fit on the backside of the leg, maintaining accessibility and minimizing the bounce. KÜHL has two of them. Riding down the back of the quads, they are perfect for clipping multitools, knives, or pens, and sheath a phone, passport, or tickets. And it’s these drop-in pockets that make the Suppressor our favorite pant to wear on the plane. Everything stays within easy reach.

If there’s any knock against the Suppressor Joggers , it’s that these are simple pull-on pants. No button, no fly — just an elastic waist and drawstring. On the flip side, this keeps things quick when moving through TSA – there’s no pulling off the belt and redressing after pat-downs.

Ornot Mission Pants

  • Fabric 95% nylon, 5% elastane
  • Fabric weight 232 gsm
  • Weight 14 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Gusseted design gives a great fit
  • Reflective details on cuffs
  • Made in USA
  • Not many – An extra pockets or a drop in phone sleeve, and these would be our top choice for travel pants

When it comes to fit and function, cyclists have it all figured out. Stretch, durability, DWR, and ergonomic pocket layout make a great commuter pant. Fall short on any of these, cyclists will be quick to call you out.

San Francisco-based Ornot hit all the paces with its Mission Shorts. This year, the brand released its beloved short in a pant. True to the brand, the Mission Pants ($148) pull off an effortlessly classy-looking pant. Minimalist aesthetics, five pockets (two that zip shut), and the rear pockets angle off the midline for easy access. The stealth thigh pocket zips contents securely off the back of the leg. The leeward position pegs the device to the leg while in the saddle.

We found the Mission Pants to be lighter than other commuter pants on the market. The 232 gsm fabric breathes well and moves with the body without feeling like a protective shell. They wear easy at the office and feel at home on the street. And if you grab a bike by the horns, both cuffs flip up to reveal reflective hits to keep you seen on the go.

We’ve been following this small brand for years and it keeps bringing its A-game to market. These garments are all made in the USA and offer a 1-year warranty. The brand’s Mission Pants are great on the bike … or not.

Jetty Acadia 2.0 Utility Pant

  • Fabric 100% polyester
  • Fabric weight 240 gsm
  • Weight 16 oz.

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Good stretch
  • Comfortable fit
  • Drawstring and belt loops
  • Only available in a 32 inseam
  • Pants stretch and lightly pill over time
  • Front occasionally unbuttons too easily

Jetty’s Acadia Utility Pant ($100) straddles the shoreline between board short and the boardroom. But don’t let its slick chino veneer dissuade you.

The 100% polyester material is warp-knitted, interlocking the poly fibers into a smooth-faced fabric. Jetty sewed in a gusset in the crotch to add extra room for the legs. The combination of cut and materials gives the Acadia an amazing amount of stretch in all directions.

And it also gives the pants fantastic wrinkle resistance. We’ve pulled our Acadias out of overstuffed bags and walked into meetings with deceivingly fresh-pressed-looking pants.

Two pockets zip shut on the backside to keep your goods protected, and the mesh hand pockets are deep. Riding down the right leg is a drop-in device pocket. There is plenty of room in the drop-in pocket, and plenty of room in the relaxed quads before they taper slightly to the bottom hem. This extra room in the thighs lets the phone bounce more than we’d like.

The Acadia Utility Pants close with a tarnished brass button embossed with the Jetty logo. A drawstring is sewn into the waistband so you won’t ever lose it in the wash. And in case you do need to go into the boardroom, Jetty ports the drawstring on both sides of the waistband, so you can tuck the drawstring on the inside of the pants for a polished look.

KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pant

  • Fabric 96% nylon, 4% spandex
  • Fabric weight 156 gsm

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Integrated web belt
  • Three zippered pockets (two in back and one behind the thigh)
  • Deep mesh hand pockets
  • Quiet material
  • Lifetime free repair program
  • Free shipping and returns
  • Slim fit won’t appeal to some. Slimmest pant in the lineup
  • Front snap is weak
  • Metal belt clasp may invite a wanding at TSA

At $100, the KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pants are a refreshing blend of style and tech and one helluva outdoor pant. The nylon twill is blended with a touch of spandex yielding room for adventure in a quiet yet bomber pant.

Should you decide to bring these trousers off-piste, the durable twill has a robust DWR, shunning even the wettest brush. Deep mesh hand pockets and zippered rear pockets make sure all your goods stay where you put them. A roomy device pocket zips shut along the right thigh.

To keep the pants up, an integrated web belt hooks over the button closure. For better (or worse) the belt is sewn into the pants and cannot be removed. KETL bonded a bead of silicon inside the waistband to prevent the pants from riding down. We found these pants stay glued to the backside while wearing a pack.

Across the board, KETL pants fit slim. If you have athletic calves and quads, these will feel snug. If you prefer a more relaxed fit, these probably won’t be a pant for you. What it lacks in room, it gives back in performance. The lack of extra material makes the Shenanigan a great choice for cycling. The durability, flexibility, and tapered fit soar on the mountain bike.

Available only online, KETL makes it easy to buy and return. They offer free shipping both ways and back up their products with a lifetime repair program. But trust us, you’ll want to keep a hold of your KETL Mountain Apparel Shenanigan Outdoor Pants .

Orvis O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants

  • Fabric 51% cotton, 45% nylon, 4% Lycra
  • Fabric weight 213 gsm
  • Fit Casual boot cut, true to size

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Classically inspired 5-pocket design
  • Hidden 6th zippered pocket in right rear pocket
  • Reflective strips sewn inside both legs for visibility
  • Smallest size is 32”
  • No gusset for extra mobility. Not that they need it.
  • Slightly less fashionable option to Western Rise’s Evolution 2

You don’t have to pack a rod to appreciate Orvis’s O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants ($129). These easy-wearing cotton-poly pants are a cross between your favorite denim and a lightweight khaki. The warp-knit twill has a touch of mechanical stretch and a DWR that is tough enough to negotiate riverside scrambles after work but with enough swagger to make it back to dinner in style.

Sewn together with an exposed overlock stitch, the seam is left exposed on the inside. It’s not tacked down. Though not as durable as a welted seam, the O.O.O.O. (that’s Out-Of-Office, Office) pants trend more durable than many of the pants we’ve seen. This seems entirely appropriate for the classic 5-pocket design pants.

The rear right pocket has an extra hidden zippered pocket to keep your wallet, passport, or fishing license securely stowed. In case you are riding home, both leg’s bottom hems have a six-inch strip of reflective tape sewn into the side seam. We didn’t expect that kind of attention to detail from a fishing brand, but it’s a nice touch that we appreciate.

We’ve been wearing the O.O.O.O. 5-Pocket Pants for years now and found that they are durable, lightweight, and breathable.

Eddie Bauer Guide Pro End-to-Ender Pants

  • Fabric 56% CORDURA® nylon, 37% nylon, 7% spandex
  • Fabric weight Unnkown

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Burly CORDURA fabric
  • Seven pocket design with three that close securely
  • Limited color ways
  • Backcountry styling doesn’t blend as well in the city

Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro is a favorite with the GearJunkie staff. Classic fit, logical pocket layout, and top-shelf construction, these pants are frequently on sale and will last you for years. The Guide Pro End-to-Ender ($120) is Bauer’s beefed Guide Pro, and with a CORDURA nylon build, it’s more durable without sacrificing the weight, and it is 2 oz lighter. If you like to scramble around and get a little dirt under the nails while traveling, these pants are for you.

Constructed with a vertical weft knit and a generous portion of spandex, the pants have some lateral stretch but are vertically static. Articulated pleats help buy the pants mobility around the knees.

Seven generous and well-positioned pockets dot the pants. In addition to the pair of double-reinforced deep hand pockets, a pair of map pockets rest over the thighs. The left zips shut while the right thigh pocket has a flap that overlaps the lip of the pocket, keeping the contents from bouncing out. On the backside, two flap pockets snap shut and a third patch pocket hides under the right rear pocket.

The thigh pockets are sewn into the pants. This gives the pockets a clean and integrated look. Because Eddie Bauer stitches the entire pant together with overlocked seams, you can feel the extra bulk of the pocket seams against the leg.

These are the one of two pants on our list sewn entirely with overlock stitching, and it’s worth noting. This extra measure of stitching provides more durability, but you’ll feel the bulk. You get used to it over time. It’s really a testament to the overall bomber construction of the End-to-Enders.

The pants close with a beefy zipper and fat button which stay closed. Belt loops are tacked to the waistband for extra options. And two eyelets are punched through the bottom hem of each pant leg, allowing you to run a gaiter cord through the pants if you want.

Eddie Bauer is a stalwart when it comes to value. While the styling is more traditional, the Guide Pro End-to-Ender is one of the best-built pants we’ve seen on the market. And since Eddie Bauer seems to run a sale about every other month, you can eventually find them about 40% off, making the a fantastic deal.

Municipal Overland Cargo

  • Fabric 98% cotton ripstop, 2% spandex
  • Fabric weight 160 gsm
  • Fit Athletic

The Best Men’s Travel Pants of 2024

  • Forward style
  • Six pockets, with three that zip shut, and one that snaps shut
  • Draw cord around the bottom hem
  • Elastic waist
  • Offered in one length
  • Treading into expensive territory for a simple pull-up cargo pant

Military meets gym day. From Mark Wahlberg’s warehouse of hustle and sporting style, Municipal’s Overland Cargo ($128) deconstructs the traditional cargo pant and injects modern flair. Which is a notable feat in itself.

Typically, function dictates form on cargo pants. Patched with oversized, baggy pockets can make them wear bulky and look unflattering. The Overland weaves a touch of spandex into the mostly cotton material, sews in a gusseted crotch, and pleated articulated knees to net functional mobility in a slim jogger style pant. These wear less Operation Desert Storm and slide right into urban core.

This doesn’t imply they lost their way. With six streamlined pockets, there is room for all your EDC essentials. In addition to the two deep hand pockets, two rear pockets zip shut. A vertical zipper pocket glides easily over the thigh, and the definitive cargo pocket snaps shut over the left leg with a single button. The entire pant is sewn together with overlocked and welted seams.

Available in size S-3X, the Overlands come in one length — the ideal length for anyone. True to jogger style, the bottom hem stops before the ankle.

An elastic cord is sewn into the bottom hem and can be cinched tight around the leg with a cord lock. Because of these design decisions, the length rides on its style credibility and has an acceptable universal size allowance.

Wahlberg’s style keeps you guessing whether he’s coming from or going to the gym. No button to pull out, no fly to blow, these pants pull up like sweatpants and stay around the waist with a simple drawstring. The Overland Cargo follows Wahlberg’s “I don’t care … but I look good doing it” aesthetic and is a great option for a casual lightweight pant with pockets aplenty.

For those that are cargo-curious — or simply want to throw on a pair of pants and look good without giving it much thought — the Overland Cargos have subtle posture without leaning heavily into athleisure.

How We Tested Men’s Travel Pants

There are few other products we test at GearJunkie that are considered non-negotiable in society. Outside the house, you gotta wear pants (or shorts). And if you’re choosing shorts, you’re probably not looking at the right pants. Travel pants are part of our everyday uniform allowing us to test them daily. We test pants for the office grind, after-school errands, dispatching weekend chores, and yes, of course, travel, constantly logging test hours to find the best travel pants on the market.

Cozy in coach, capable of tackling adventure, but formal enough to wear to dinner, travel pants span the use case spectrum. We’ve worn them on intercontinental flights to Germany, Italy, France, and Slovenia, as well as transcontinental flights from Jacksonville to Boise. In warmer climates, we’ve pulled them out of our bikepacking bags on cool nights in Nicaragua and high up on the Colombian Coffee Triangle. One tester even wore his pair to the top of the Grand Teton.

When we get our hands on a new pant, we first take a look at the materials. We gauge the fabric weight, breathability, and the material’s ability to resist wrinkling. Synthetics with a DWR will pack down smaller, bounce back from being jammed in luggage on an overnight flight, and resist stains (and spills) better than cotton.

A touch of spandex affords some stretch and nylon tends to be more durable. We then turn them inside out to look at the seams joining the pants together, looking at where costs were cut and potential quality issues might cause a blowout on the road.

To be considered for our list, pants need at least one pocket that can be zipped shut to safely secure a passport or wallet. The hand pockets should be deep enough to keep keys and change from accidentally spilling out, or have zippers that prevent mishaps. No joke, one pair of pants we tested (not on this list) spit a wallet out at work without us even knowing it.

We then evaluated each pant’s fit, durability, packability, ability to bounce back from repeated wash and wear, and unpacking. We want to find out if a pair of pants can be washed in the sink in the evening and be ready to wear the following morning.

We want to see if the material resists wrinkling. And we want to know if the pants are cut too large, too small, or hike up the legs. The best material and construction alone can’t fake a good fit. We test pants for mobility and proper length. Does the pant bind in the crotch? Are the gussets appropriate? Are the legs cut at a proper length or do they ride up when walking?

Our testing focuses primarily on comfort, versatility, and functionality when in transit, so if you’re looking for something more durable for active pursuits, check out our picks for the  best hiking pants . We also have a guide for the  best women’s travel pants  to get your travel companion ready for the long haul.

Testing History

Steve Graepel has been leading the men’s travel pant buyer guide since 2015. Over the span of 8 years, Graepel has seen over 225 pairs of travel pants, rigorously testing 150 pants. Graepel has worked at GearJunkie as a contributing editor since 2009, testing everything from packrafts, to bike bags, sleeping bags, winter boots, and trail runners. His latest beat is travel pants and flannels. Before his time as a fashion blogger, he wrote for Travel Idaho, National Geographic Adventure, Patagonia’s Tin Shed, Trail Runner, and Gear Patrol.

Graepel has researched and tested travel pants extensively — traveling, working, and camping in the high alpine desert of Idaho, Montana, and Utah, and traveling abroad in a variety of environments including Europe, Asia, Central, and South America. He continues to test travel pants year-round and searches for anyone who will listen to his yarns about the best travel trousers.

In 2020, we tried 27 pairs and listed 15 pants on our men’s buyers guide. In 2021, we tested an additional 35 pairs, highlighting nine new pants on our list. In 2022 we saw an additional 23 pairs, adding six new pants. In 2023 we looked at 38 pairs, adding seven new pants to the men’s travel pant buyer’s guide. Finally, in 2024, we’ve reviewed 27 pants, updating our Men’s Travel Pants buyer guide with nine new pants.

Each year introduces new styles and materials, and we try to reflect the best on the market of that year. Some trousers remain on the list, year after year. They are either so good, or so good of a deal, that they are tough to topple.

To keep a finger on the pulse of pants, we read reviews from top sites and contact manufacturers directly. Steve Graepel has regular conversations with pant brand owners and representatives in the travel pant space. These relationships allow us to stay up to date on what makes pants better every year, and keep an eye on sleeper pants that just don’t have the marketing budget to get mass attention.

Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose Travel Pants

Regardless of whether the pants are straight-leg or slim, a good pair is one that follows the human form and doesn’t bag out after repeated washings, or bloat when packed with your phone and keys. The length should fit your inseam or run longer so you can roll them up or get them tailored.

Almost every pant on our list has a great fit. If they didn’t, we’ve shared the cons. Both the Jetty’s and UNIONBAY’s pants ran a little long. On the other end, Municipal’s Overland Cargo is short by design and is only available in one length. Both Eddie Bauer and Orvis offer a variety of inseams for a dialed fit (from 30″ to 34″).

travel comfort jeans

We scored each pant for both its ability to adventure, wear in coach, and hit the streets. Some pants, like KETL Mountains Shenanigans, have a bias for stout use. The Shenanigans are coated with a solid DWR and are our choice for adventure trips where you can’t sacrifice durability.

If traveling by plane, we prefer comfortable pants with accessible pockets. While 5-pocket styled jeans or chinos wear well on the street, their pockets are harder to access when sitting on the plane. Instead, we prefer a jogger or cargo pant that has vertical zippered pockets and drop-in device pockets on the legs.

Both Municipal and KÜHL had easy-to-access pockets in the plane. Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro End-to-Ender has two generous thigh pockets. But both are sewn into the pants and tighten up over the thigh when seated. This makes it harder to pull the contents out.

For comfort in coach, you don’t need to look past Bluffworks Envoy . They look great and have plenty of pockets to stay organized. KÜHL’s Suppressor Jogger dialed in the drop-in pockets and is lightweight and durable, but the material isn’t nearly as soft as Eddie Bauer’s pants. It’s always a trade-off.

Style Matters

While comfort is key, we also need to be able to show ourselves in public (no washed-out gray sweatpants on this list). The most versatile travel clothes should be able to tackle a hike without getting roughed up, or walk into town looking sharp enough to peruse a museum, and duck in for fine dining afterward.

Unfortunately, the cargo pockets take away some formality while out on the town. With its jogger styling, KÜHL didn’t design around Michelin stars. They prioritized function and durability, mapping to utility. KÜHL, Municipal, and Eddie Bauer each have unique cargo styling that brings a touch of modernity to the military-inspired side-pocket pants. In general, we love cargo-style pants and joggers while sitting on the plane. It keeps all your essentials within reach.

On the other hand, Western Rise’s Evolution 2 and Proof’s 72-Hour Merino are fantastically styled everyday pants, but both have a single security pocket to maintain that sleek look. They are our go-to choice for travels to big cities where we want to kick up the look and feel at home while traveling abroad.

Clean lines, darker colors, and traditional styling help you blend into crowds and stave off the would-be pickpocket’s radar. The best men’s travel pants should look as good as they feel without shouting “ tourist .”

The material should be lightweight and, in our preference, darker to minimize showing the dirt collected along the way. That said, we were astounded by how well a fresh DWR can resist stains on even the fairest beige pants.

Fabric Weight

Lightweight performance fabrics can withstand repeated washings in a sink, line dry overnight, and stay wrinkle-free after weeks on the go. Today’s fabrics offer advanced sun protection and moisture-wicking properties and are often water-resistant or water-repellent.

Fabric weight is measured in grams per square meter (GSM). A heavier GSM will take up more room in your bag and take longer to dry. We find a 200-ish GSM fabric weight, like on our top pick from Bluffworks, light and breezy, and dries out quickly.

A welterweight fabric will disappear in the bag and dry out insanely fast, but going too light sacrifices durability. All the pants we tested are durable enough to venture off the pavement.

If you want the lightest pant you can find, give KETL Mountain’s Shenanigan a look. The 156 GSM fabric rolls up tight and is exceptionally durable. Western Rise also uses a lighter GSM fabric, but the pants weigh more overall.

travel comfort jeans

Fabric Type

A cotton blend fabric adds breathability and a cooling effect, which is great for warmer climates, but can also sacrifice durability. And, unless treated with a DWR, cotton can wet out more easily and hold water longer.

The Orvis and Municipal’s Overland Cargo weave some cotton into their blend. To beef up the durability, the natural fiber is woven with a synthetic like polyester or nylon and an elastic component for stretch.

If you choose to go with denim or cotton, consider a stretchy fabric with a bit of spandex or elastane for comfort and flexibility while on the road. It will resist wear longer, dry faster, and feel much more comfortable. While not on this year’s list, Aviator’s The Best Travel Jeans in the World are very comfortable and weave in some stretch, but they weigh nearly twice as much as every other pant on the list. Our cotton choices keep the weight down.

Most of the pants on this list are woven from synthetic fibers. Synthetics tend to stand up to more abuse than their natural counterparts. For example, Ornot’s Mission Pant is incredibly durable and is built for men who abuse pants while in the saddle.

Unique this year, we saw a merino wool synthetic blend with Proof’s 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant. Wool is known for its odor-resistant and insulative qualities. Contrary to what you might think, they stay surprisingly cool and breathe well in hot climates. For durability and stretch, Proof weaves nylon, polyester, and a touch of elastane.

Weaving in spandex or elastic adds mobility, but can also give the pants a polished, slick finish. KÜHL weaves in a whopping 15% spandex into the material, but most pants will have between 2-6% for a combination of durability and mobility. Bluffworks , Unionbay , and Jetty feel more formal with their smooth-faced fabric finishes. Material finishes are more of a personal preference and don’t affect their water resistance, which is added with a DWR wash.

Our favorite pants come from Bluffworks. While the fit is fantastic, they don’t have a DWR. This makes them less desirable if you are traveling to places that rain a lot. However, they excel in so many other ways that they still stand out as our top choice. On the flip side, Western Rise’s DWR not only deflects dirt and grime on the road, but liters of beer simply rolled off them at Oktoberfest. We really took one for the team while testing.

Performance fabrics are standing up to heavy use like never before. Shelling out a few more bucks for quality generally gets you into a more durable pant that should hold up to more extensive use. We’ve put in countless hours testing the pants on this list, so you’re starting in the right place.

Seam Construction

Seams are often overlooked. Out of sight, out of mind, seams bring two patches of fabric together and are crucial for durability and comfort. But this is where we can differentiate the good from the great, and this is where we get passionately nerdy.

Flat-felled seams are best for joining heavy fabrics together. Think denim. The material doesn’t stretch and the fabric is woven from heavy cotton yarn. You want a solid seam to join the pants together. The fabric is joined, then rolled over itself and double stitched for a clean, bomber fasten.

None of the pants on our list are joined entirely from flat-felled seams, though LIVSN and Proof incorporate a flat-fell seam on at least one leg seam. In general, we find it more important to flat-fell the inseam of the pants (which is what Proof does).

Too much material tacked together with a flat-fell seam can cause rubbing against the legs. And most travel pants are constructed from lighter-weight fabrics, so pants don’t always need this extra durable seam construction.

They can get away with a less expensive, and more comfortable overlocked seam. An overlocking stitch, or welt-seam, has a lower profile, leaving the raw edge exposed but sewn down to the pant. Plus they are nearly as durable as the venerable flat-felled stitch, but can feel more comfortable.

Some overlocked stitches aren’t tacked down. That is, the seam isn’t locked down flat with a second row of stitching, leaving the surged seam exposed on the inside. This usually isn’t a big deal. Our main concern would be that the stitching could get caught on something and start to unravel. But we haven’t ever had this experience and it’s a fine option to use when binding two lightweight materials together. Orvis, Ornot, and even Bluffworks uses a combination of overlocked and welted overlocked seams.

The simplest seam, or plain seam, joins the two sides together with a simple, single stitch. Often the cut material is finished with a surger to prevent the material from fraying, but the joining seam itself is sewn together with a single stitch, and the exposed edges butterfly on the inside of the pant.

This is often used for lightweight material where want to reduce the bulk as much as possible. We see this used on Western Rise’s Evolution 2. In theory, this is not a highly durable seam construction. And we’ve seen this kind of seam unravel on a few pants we’ve tested. We’ve also been beating our Western Rise’s for years now and have yet to see their plain seam blow.

travel comfort jeans

We like a pant that doesn’t ride up or bind when seated, and moves with you when active. DUER and KÜHL are very close at the top, for pure comfort, you can’t beat  Bluffworks Envoy . Beyond the fantastic material, the pant is is available in slim and regular fit, so there’s truly a comfortable pant for everyone’s preference.

travel comfort jeans

We’ve tested  Western Rise’s Evolution lineup   standing outside in Bogota monsoon season, climbing snow and ice on the Grand, and prosting over beers at Oktoberfest. The DWR not only sheds spills, but it deflects dirt and grime too.

After a week of wearing them across the Alps, including a day sitting in the stairwell of an overbooked train to Munich, we were shocked at how clean our light khaki Evolution 2.0s walked off the return flight. We were also impressed with KETL Mountain’s Shenanigan’s. Water immediately beads off the surface.

If you’re bringing one pair of pants, you’ll eventually have to wash them while on the road. A lightweight synthetic pant is your best bet for a comfortable morning. Here again, Western Rise’s Evolutions  rose to the top. They are lightweight, durable, and dry out quicker than most. They also remain cool and breezy in hot climates and wear supremely well.

The pair of large cargo pockets on Muncipal’s Overland Cargo are easy to access and have plenty of space to hold your kit and do it without looking like Urkel. For an equally impressive pocket game, but a more polished look, we recommend looking at Bluffworks Envoy, which stealthily hides nine pockets in the otherwise casual-looking chino. Eddie Bauer’s Guide Pro End-to-Ender is close, with seven practical and accessible pockets.

travel comfort jeans

With their high CORDURA count, the Eddie Bauers are tough to beat. Ornot’s Mission pants weaves a high nylon count, and come in a very close second for durability.

For long flights on the plane, we like comfortable, casual look with easy pocket access. We give the nod to Municipal’s Overland Cargo. The deep horizontal pockets are easy to access while seated and the high cotton count breathes well.

KÜHL’s Suppressor Joggers have the highest spandex count on the list at 15%. They are super flexible, light, durable, and have a good DWR. For a more formal look, Bluffworks has an equally impressive spandex weave (10%) and is by far the most comfortable pant on our list.

For a good combination of flexibility, durability, and all-around wearability, we recommend Western Rise’s Evolution 2. If you want to splurge, we also liked Proof’s 72-Hour Merino Travel Pant, which blends 6% elastane into the wool-synthetic base. Proof’s pants are nearly a one-and-done purchase. They are durable and stay stench-free on the road, making them the only pants you may need to bring.

Denim Lovers, Rejoice! Vogue Editors Share Their Favorite (and Most Comfortable) Jeans

By Lauren Sanchez and Gaby Keiderling

All products featured on Vogue are independently selected by our editors. However, we may earn affiliate revenue on this article and commission when you buy something.

You can’t deny the cozy allure of joggers and black leggings , but how about a happy medium? Our editors have found theirs in the most comfortable jeans—a pant that’s both practical and polished. And because fashion editors are notorious for having large denim collections, we asked a handful of our stylish colleagues to share their favorite ones. More specifically, the most comfortable jeans in their wardrobes.

Vogue Editors’ Most Comfortable Jeans:

  • The Everyday Go-To: Levi's Original cropped jeans , $108
  • The Office-Approved Denim: Madewell the Harlow wide-leg jeans , $108
  • The Elevated Baggy: Agolde low-rise baggy jeans , $228
  • The Chic Cuff: Citizens of Humanity Ayla high-rise wide-leg jeans , $260
  • The Versatile Straight-Leg: Levi’s black 501 ’93 straight jeans , $90
  • The Best High-Rise: DL1961 Patti straight high-rise vintage jeans , $209
  • The Comfy Wide-Leg: Citizens of Humanity Annina high-rise organic jeans , $240
  • The Petite Must-Have: Mother Insider crop jeans , $228

Denim's proven itself to be a tried-and-true wardrobe essential for a reason, with purists on the team gravitating toward non-stretch denim. As far as fabric goes, if rigid denim isn't your speed, there are plenty of other options in this gallery cut from softer and thinner denim that don't cross into stretch territory. (In fact, jeans have become so comfortable that denim has entered a whole new category; more on those non-jean jeans here .)

Firework content

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

But besides sharing their most comfortable pairs, editors also revealed a few styling tips and tricks, like knowing when to size up or down, which styles don’t require breaking in, and which denim trends are the hottest right now. Thanks to these picks, the search for the perfect denim to wear just about anywhere can end here. You just have to know where to find them—which hopefully for you, is below.

Lisa Aiken, executive fashion director of Vogue.com

I am so happy that relaxed-fit jeans are trending right now; the slouchier, the better for me. This pair of Raey jeans comes in multiple shades, including a soft black and perfect mid-blue wash. They look great with something slim fitting on top, and either sneakers or a kitten heel... depending on just how comfy you want to be.

I was on the hunt for a great pair of baggy, lower-rise jeans to add a new jean silhouette to my collection. I have not taken off Agolde’s newer “low-slung baggy” pair since I got them over the holidays in two different washes. They’re offered in two inseam lengths. I opted for the longer version to achieve that ultra-casual cool puddle draping effect over my shoes. I love the relaxed ease these bring to my style, not to mention they're the most comfortable pair I've tried yet.

I’m a big fan of Mother Jeans. Given my petite size , the Insider Crop seamlessly fits my frame, and they’re so comfortable, they feel like a second skin. Even better, they come in a multitude of colors for all-year-round wear and I especially love the frayed hem detail to wear with boots or sneakers.

I find myself reaching for this pair of cropped 501s on the weekend more often than not. They hit in all the right places and are a straight cut that don't hug the legs (they're also not baggy). The best part is the "cropped" length for my average height.

I’m a weirdo who wears jeans almost every day, even if I am not going anywhere. I swear I even think better in them! My go-to is a pair of black Levi’s 501s, which at this point, feel like a second skin to me. Once you break them in, they are so comfortable—promise!

This has been my year of the jean—basically taking every jeans style for a spin to see what suits me. (In 2022, I didn't own a pair as insane as that sounds!) When I want something  tailored, I gravitate towards these Mango jeans. The balloon style feels a bit more interesting than your average jean, and fit roomier than a straight-leg.

My current favorite pair is a mid-rise, wide-leg, light-wash from Unspun. They use a 3D body scanning technology to create custom-fit jeans, so they're super comfortable. Plus, they are dedicated to transparency about where their clothes are made, and prioritize low-waste manufacturing processes. It's a cool company, and a super wearable pair of jeans.

In college I discovered a lot about myself—including which jeans worked for me. More than 10 years later, I’m still wearing basically the same exact pair of pants. Black, skinny-leg, very high-waist denim with a little stretch by Frame. When worn, I feel like Audrey Hepburn as a beatnik in Funny Face dancing in the cafés of Paris. Their extra-high waist means no fidgeting and retucking (blouses and, ahem, skin). Their slight stretch (2.5% of elastane which makes all the difference) allows me to crisscross my legs with ease. They look somewhat dressy and can almost pass as a no-denim pair of pants—which is perfect because I seem to be in the extreme minority of people who don’t wear blue jeans.

I recently invested in a few pairs of Levi’s for entering the new year, and I have to say that these straight-ankle jeans have been my go-tos. While I am a jeans girl through and through, I’m always on the lookout for pairs that are comfortable and flattering, yet can be dressed up or down—depending on the occasion. I’ve worn this pair to the office, out with friends, and even while working from home. Plus, the wider leg is perfect for pairing them with heeled black boots and a sweater if I’m feeling extra fancy .

I love these Acne jeans—maybe too much. More comfortable than sweatpants, they are perfect for a bodega run or a dinner downtown. Just a couple of weeks ago, I wore them on a 15-hour plane ride and unlike most denim, they were not bothersome or stiff. The pure cotton breathes beautifully.

I wasn't convinced baggy jeans would be for me until I tried on the Ayla from Citizens of Humanity. The denim is soft but not stretchy and they have a just-right slouch throughout the leg with generous cuffs at the bottom--a combo that magically works for my petite (I'm 5'1"!) frame. I wore the light wash all summer with sandals and sneakers, and picked up the darker hue for fall to wear with chunky boots and mesh flats. They do run a bit large in the hips, so size down if you want a closer fit.

9 Best Travel Pants for Women (Comfort, Style, Versatility)

Ever since I discovered a few of the best travel pants we’ve included on this list, they are almost all I ever wear. Who knew that travel pants (jeans and leggings too!) could be so comfortable and versatile; why would I choose to wear anything else?

One of the biggest travel challenges we all face is staying comfortable. When you’re stuck on a plane for 10+ hours, what you’re wearing suddenly becomes an issue.

If you’re a day hiker, you want pants that don’t limit your range of motion. If you’re on a city break, you want stylish travel clothes that can be mix and matched for different situations.

palma chinos

This is why we went on a mission to find the most comfortable and versatile travel pants for women (see our choices for men’s pants here ). The good news is that, after testing dozens of pairs, we found some really great choices!

To help you avoid all the necessary researching and testing involved in finding the best travel pants, I’ve put together a guide to the best travel pants and jeans to make the search easy for you! Rest assured that I own every single pair of the pants on this list (often multiple pairs) and I personally wear them every day.

What to Look For in the Best Women’s Pants for Travel

My main reason for wanting to find the best travel pants was for comfort on airplanes. I need to sit for long periods of time in these pants without them digging into my skin. I want pants that don’t restrict my movement or pull down in the back when I bend over. I am also looking for a pair that doesn’t stretch out after prolonged wear.

⇒ Lightweight Material

We  pack really light  using just a carry-on backpack, so lightweight and compact are top on my list. Even when I use packing cubes , I still can’t fit in multiple pairs of regular pants or jeans.  A good pair of travel pants will be lightweight, yet durable.

⇒ Wrinkle-Resistant

I really hate it when we arrive at our destination and all of our clothes are wrinkled. I don’t want my travel pants to wrinkle during travel.  If I forget to fold my pants before bed, I’d love for them to not be wrinkled in the morning. Wishful thinking? I actually found a few pairs of travel pants that don’t wrinkle.

⇒ Versatility

One very important thing for me is versatility. Being a light packer, I don’t pack multiple pairs of pants. I need one pair to do double duty, so it can be worn during casual and dressy situations. I want to wear a pair of travel pants during the day for tours and then wear them to a fancy dinner without anyone noticing.

Multi-Functional Travel Pants for Women

I like to think in terms of how I can pack the right clothing options for every situation without packing my entire wardrobe. This is where a good pair of travel pants comes in.

I highly recommend having at least one pair of black or dark grey travel pants. Why? Because black goes with everything, and because black pants can always be made to appear dressy.

I pack my Woolx or Bluffworks leggings and either my Mott & Bow or Aviator jeans and those two pairs of pants get me through every situation while traveling.

If you buy the right pair of travel pants, they will be multi-functional enough to be worn in all of these situations without anyone wondering what you were thinking.

The Best Travel Pants Reviews for Women

★ our favorite women’s jeans: mott & bow slim boyfriend jeans.

Mott & Bow slim boyfriend jeans

I’m a sucker for a good pair of jeans, and I’ve definitely found that at Mott & Bow. I actually have a few pairs of these jeans, both in the boyfriend fit, which is a modern slim fit with a mid-rise that’s not baggy like some boyfriend fit jeans are.

They are a nice medium weight demin that’s soft and flexible, so they don’t feel like they’re painted on and won’t allow for easy movement. They do have some elasticity to make them moveable, but they don’t get baggy with repeated wear, which is great because I often take only 2 pairs of pants for a 7-day trip.

I also really like that the sizing is really accurate. Unless you’re between sizes, you can definitely order your regular size and not worry about them fitting. Both pairs I own fit me exactly the same.

The jeans can be machine washed in cold water, inside out. You can tumble dry them or hang dry, which is what I do when I’m traveling. I do go quite a few wears between washes usually. They don’t need to be washed with every wear.

They come in mid-rise and high-rise skinny, slim boyfriend, and mom jeans. Colors are Dark Blue, Medium Dark Blue, and Medium Blue, Medium Light Blue, and Light Blue.

Key Features

  • NYC-based clothing company

Aviator Women’s Travel Jeans

Aviator Fly Straight Jeans

These are one of the most comfortable pairs of jeans I’ve ever had. I can’t imagine wearing regular jeans while traveling again. The skinny jeans fit like skinny jeans, but they feel like leggings. All I had to do to find the right fit was order my regular size. I didn’t try them on before ordering. And they fit perfectly.

The features of these jeans are what led them to be called the “best travel jeans in the world” by USAToday. They have deep front pockets (large enough to hold a cell phone, and two hidden anti-scratch zipper secure back pockets (large enough to hold a Kindle).

They are made from a premium stretch denim blend that’s durable, fast-drying and easy to clean. I recommended not to put them in the dryer to extend their life, but that’s not a problem because they dry very quickly.

Shape recovery is great – I’ve worn them for up to five days in a row without any issue with them stretching out. I appreciate the extra stretch so kneeling down doesn’t cause the pants to ride down.

The colors I have are dark indigo (which is great for dressing up), black and silver. They also come in medium indigo and white. There are 3 different fits, so you can pick the one you like most.

They are made in a family-run factory in Los Angeles. If you order the wrong size, it’s not a problem. You can return them for a new size. Worldwide shipping is available.

Pros: Very soft, comfortable, stretchy material. They look great on. Cons:  These jeans come in only one length, so you’ll have to hem them, but Aviator offers a free hem. The seam in the crotch of mine stretched and started to come apart after 2 years (normal wear & tear)

Probably the most versatile of all the pants we’ve reviewed, the Bluffworks Ponte pants can be worn in almost any situation. They are the closest to stretch pants – reminiscent of yoga pants, but thicker – and definitely the most comfortable to wear. As Bluffworks puts it, they are “Athleisure meets business casual”.

Pull them on like leggings – no zipper or clasp – and The material is a tightly woven double-knit fabric that’s soft and naturally wrinkle resistant. They also have anti-mocrobial properties so you can wear them more than once between washes – perfect for a long weekend getaway.

You can wear them out walking around during the day and dress them up with a nice shirt – perhaps the Bluffworks Azores blouse – for a classy dinner date.

If anything, they almost look too nice to wear for adventure travel, because of their sleek, soft fabric. While they fit in better for the office or museums and afternoon tea stops, I’d definitely still wear them hiking because of their stretch and comfort.

Bluffworks is really great for pockets. there are 5 total pockets, including 4 zipper pockets, for security.

  • Ankle slits & leg seam detailing add visual length
  • Quick drying, wrinkle resistant and stretch
  • Machine washable
  • Hidden waistband pocket for cards and cash.

Bluffworks Palma Chinos

Bluffworks Chino pants

One of the best pairs of women’s travel pants I own are Bluffworks Chinos. The thing I like most about this pair of pants is that they are incredibly lightweight and don’t wrinkle. I can roll them up in a ball for two days and 5 minutes after I’ve put them on, they’re smooth again.

Inside the front right pocket is a patch to fit your phone, or you can put your device in our signature phone pocket in the back right waistband. The rear welt pockets feature invisible zippers to provide security when traveling and peace of mind at home.

Our women’s chinos have all the benefits of a quick dry, wrinkle resistant twill fabric, with the feel of cotton and a four-way stretch. Inspired by the traditional chino cut, these pants have a slightly tapered leg and sit at the natural waist with a 9” rise. Roll up the cuffs (or leave them long) and dress them up or down effortlessly.

I like the flexibility to wear them as long pants or as capris. They look nice and modern and streamlined. And best of all, they are super light, so they’re perfect for a light packer. They currently come in 3 colors.

  • Pros: Wrinkle-resistant, soft, comfortable material, no large waistband to dig in
  • Cons:  There might be too many pockets?
  • Comfortable relaxed fit, and cozy!
  • Quick dry, wrinkle resistant twill fabric
  • 6 total pockets, including 2 zippered
  • Waistband pocket for phone and cards

Bluffworks Naha Joggers

bluffworks naha joggers

Bluffworks Naha Joggers are probably some of the most lightweight, comfortable pants you can find. They’re great for traveling because they’re so comfortable for the plane and long road trips, in a very casual style.

I’m always into a capsule wardrobe and these joggers are a great addition to the Bluffworks collection. The chinos are great for during the day, these joggers are perfect for relaxing and being casual, and the Petaluma Ponte pants are great for evening wear.

As with all Bluffworks clothing, there are 8 pockets so you can go hands-free, if you want to, including a set of low-profile cargo pockets, and an internal patch pocket for your phone.

Made from a stretchy polyester/spandex weave that inherently resists wrinkles, these navy joggers are the very definition of easy care. With thoughtful details, such as a drawstring waistband, leg seam detailing, and half-cuffed ankle with flat front hem, these stylish women’s joggers are truly in a class by themselves.

  • Pros: Super comfortable and soft material, very lightweight
  • Cons:  Drawstring waist is a bit stiff
  • So incredibly comfortable!
  • Lightweight, stretch weave with a silky feel.
  • Quick-dry fabric with water and stain repellent properties
  • Leg seam detailing adds slimming effect.

Columbia Sportswear Saturday Trail Pants

Columbia Women's Saturday Trail Pant, Water and Stain Resistant, 8 R, Black

These are one of the most comfortable pairs of pants to wear, they are very lightweight and easy to take care of, and they are versatile enough to wear in multiple situations. I am very picky when it comes to comfort. I don’t want pants to be tight around the waist so that they are restricting when sitting for long hours on a plane. I want them to feel like I’m wearing yoga pants instead. These are fantastic.

There is a double snap button closure at the waist that lays flat and doesn’t dig in. They stay in place without having to pull them up all the time and they don’t really stretch over time, so if you wear them for 4+ days without washing, they don’t start to fall down and become uncomfortable after getting stretched out.

The material is soft and lightweight. They take up practically no space. I could fit 3 pairs of these in the same amount of space as one pair of jeans.

The material has Omni-Shade included, which offers UPF 50 sun protection and water repellency. I also like the feature that allows you to roll the pant leg and secure it at just below knee length with the snap tie.

Even though these are active wear pants with lots of “on-the-go” features  – like 2-way stretch material, zippered pockets, and articulating knees – the black ones can be dressed up to wear out to a nice dinner, if paired with the right top.

There are no visible logos or cargo-style pockets to give them away. Overall, these are a great pair of travel pants for women. I would recommend them over all of the others on this list. It’s all about the little details.

Pros: Lightweight, versatile, very comfortable Cons:  Don’t fit as true to size as expected. Can wrinkle easily.

  • Water and stain repellent fabric
  • UPF 50 protection.
  • Partial elastic waist for added comfort.
  • Lots of pockets, plus hidden security pocket.
  • Elastane 2-way stretch fabric with articulated knees.

PrAna Womens Halle Pants

prAna Halle Straight Pants II Black 8 S

There are quite a few differences between the PrAna pants and the Columbia pants. The PrAna Halle pants are made with 97% Nylon and 3% Spandex, and they have a thicker, slicker look and feel. The four-way stretch design with reinforced knees makes them really comfortable to move around in, so they’re great for all types of travel situations, even in more adventurous situations.

I find them to be fairly wrinkle-free and quick to dry. This pair of pants has two pockets in the back with flaps sealed with silver buttons, plus a secret hidden pocket on the top right leg, which you can see fairly well, making this pair of pants not quite as easy to dress up.

The front closure consists of a zipper and two silver buttons. They are not as relaxed in the front as I would hope and the buttons do have a tendency to dig in after a few hours.

Aside from being really durable, breathable and water resistant, the Halle travel pants also have a roll-up feature, so you can easily turn them into shorts. They come in three different lengths and it’s important to get the one that fits you right, or you may find the fit doesn’t feel right and it’s hard to keep them up.

  • Pros: Great for adventure travel
  • Cons: Side pocket makes them less multi-functional, hard to find the right size
  • Trouser styling with front snap
  • Durable water repellent finish
  • Moisture managing and water resistent
  • Reinforced at the knees
  • Multi-functional and versatile

Arc’teryx Gamma Tapered Pants

Arcteryx Gamma Pants

One of the most important pieces of a versatile travel wardrobe is a great pair of pants that can be worn for adventure and sporty situations. I pack my Arc’teryx Gamma pants for whenever I’m planning things like climbing or hiking.

They are really comfortable, with a casual, light and breathable polyester taffeta material. I wouldn’t necessarily wear these on the plane or for general walking around and sightseeing, but they are great for more active situations.

These pants are very lightweight so they are breathable and quick drying. That makes the perfect for summer travel. They have a tapered leg and a trim, casual style so they are great in many different situations. They have a slightly articulated knee for more flexibility.

There are pockets in the front and back, plus a low-profile zippered pocket on each thigh for your cell phone or room key. I really like the feel of these pants. They’re soft and slightly stretchy. I find them to be very comfortable.

  • Casual, relaxed fit
  • Warm yet breathable and wicking
  • Durable softshell pant
  • Wind-resistant, water-repellent
  • Narrow leg, zip at ankle

Now that we’ve found these great women’s travel pants, there’s no need to go back to traditional pants. These have a lot of great features that are great for travel, but also fantastic for every day wear.

I think you’ll love them as much as I do. If there are any pairs of travel pants that you love that I left off the list, let me know and I’ll review those as well.

Travel Fashion Girl help! A reader asks:

Okay ladies, I am looking for your recommendations for a pair of skinny darker wash travel jeans. My struggle is finding something that has stretch and won’t act like a tourniquet around my ankles, won’t sag in the butt after wear, but is also thick enough to keep me warm in England and Ireland. Not sure if any of the pairs I own fit the bill for extended travel. Thanks in advance!
