The Perfect Margarita

This is the best margarita recipe I know! It has the perfect ratio of white tequila, high-quality triple sec, and freshly squeezed lime juice for the best-tasting margarita every time.

travel margarita recipe

What's Taco Tuesday without a delicious and fresh margarita? There's no need to go out to enjoy a tasty margarita when you have this recipe in your repertoire.

Chef John 's margarita is created with the perfect ratio of ingredients that will give you the best-tasting margarita every single time.

Margarita Ingredients

Margaritas are incredibly simple to make with just a few ingredients:

  • Tequila: Chef John recommends a good quality 100% agave white tequila.
  • Triple Sec: Use a high-quality triple sec for the best results.
  • Lime: You'll need freshly squeezed lime juice, plus lime slices for garnishing.
  • Salt: Use coarse salt for the rim of the glass.

How to Make a Margarita

When you make a margarita you'll want to follow Chef John's 4:3:2 ratio — which is different from the classic 3:2:1 ratio for a margarita. You'll find the full recipe below, but here's a brief overview of what you can expect when you make the perfect margarita recipe: Combine tequila, triple sec, and lime juice in a shaker with ice. Shake until the outside of the shaker is frosted, then strain into a prepared glass.

1 teaspoon coarse sea salt, or as needed

Dotdash Meredith Food Studios

Moisten the rim of a glass with a lime wedge. Sprinkle salt onto a plate. Lightly dip the moistened rim into the salt.

Place a large ice cube in the glass and freeze the prepared glass until ready to serve.

Fill a cocktail shaker with fresh ice. Add tequila, triple sec, and lime juice. Cover and shake vigorously until the outside of the shaker has frosted.

Strain margarita into the chilled glass and garnish with a slice of lime.

Chef's Notes

For the best results, be sure to use fresh ice, fresh limes, and a nice bottle of triple sec, like Cointreau.

You'll also want to use a decent 100% agave white tequila, like the Don Abraham's Single Estate Blanco Tequila I enjoyed, but having said that, feel free to use one with a shorter name.

Some like to add a dash of agave nectar for a little extra sweetness, but I do not.

Classic Margarita

Just three ingredients, salted rim optional.

travel margarita recipe

The classic margarita has a nobility that's expressed by its simplicity—tequila, orange liqueur for sweetness, and tart lime juice.

Just three ingredients, harmoniously combined and perfectly balanced.

This is a cocktail recipe that you should memorize since it's so easy to whip up at impromptu dinner parties, summer BBQs, or when you need a reminder of sunshine in the middle of winter.

Simply Recipes / Elise Bauer

What's the Best Tequila for Margaritas?

I highly recommend using only good-quality tequila to make your margaritas. With only three ingredients in the cocktail, a bad tequila will result in an equally bad margarita.

Look for bottles with labels that say “100% de agave,” which means the tequila is distilled only from Mexican blue agave plants. Cheap tequilas are often cut with alcohol made from corn or sugar cane, resulting in a tequila that tastes flat and burns on the way down.

In addition, good-quality tequila is aged in oak barrels for 2 to 12 months, which gives it nuanced flavors. Blanco tequila (also called plato or silver) is aged for 2 months, reposado for 2 to 11 months, and añejo for 12 or more months.

You can serve this cocktail with salt, or not. Straight, or over the rocks. That part is up to you!

Margarita Variations

Want to change it up? Try any of these variations on the basic margarita:

  • Reposado or Añejo Margarita: Having aged longer in oak barrels these tequilas are darker in color and display more complex flavors and aromas. Using them in a margarita can be an eye-opening experience.
  • Mezcal Margarita: Swap out tequila for mezcal, tequila’s smokier, wilder-in-flavor cousin.
  • Spicy Margarita: Add a few slices of jalapeno to the cocktail shaker to add a bit of heat.
  • Pineapple Margarita: Swap out the orange liqueur for pineapple juice.
  • Frozen Margarita: We have a recipe that you can make by the pitcherful.

Simply Recipes / Garrett McCord

Buy tequila marked "100% de agave" and that has been aged for at least 2 months.

Ingredients

1 1/2 ounces blanco tequila (also called plato or silver tequila)

1 ounce orange liqueur , such as triple sec, Cointreau, or Grand Marnier

1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice

Plenty of kosher or flake salt for glass, optional (do not use iodized salt)

Ice cubes , optional

Lime wedges for garnish, optional

Pour some kosher salt into a wide bowl or small dish. Take a wedge of lime and generously rub it around the rim of your glass. Dip the rim into the salt.

Fill the glass with some fresh ice and set aside. (Skip the ice if you like your margarita straight up.)

Place the tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake for 10 seconds, and then strain into a prepared cocktail glass. Garnish with a lime wedge if desired.

the perfect margarita

This week many of us are coming up on the anniversary of all sorts of things we had little idea would define the year ahead. I remember saying things like “these masks are really expensive but they’re all that’s available, should I buy them?” (yes, Deb, and also some flour) and “they can’t cancel school, can they?” and “we can still plan a summer vacation because things should normalize by then, right?” and I’m sure I’m not alone in these one year-ago reminders throwing me for a big emo loop. It’s also been delightfully almost spring-like in NYC after a consistently wintery winter and I haven’t been able to stay inside, inventing as many reasons as I can come up with for taking walks, which is bad for productivity but doing wonders to counteract all of those heavy moods. At the end of one yesterday, I swung by the grocery store to get ingredients for crisp black bean tacos and because I cannot make this up, you must believe me: a bird pooped on me in the store . Is it still luck if it happens while you’re inspecting cabbages, hoping to find an apartment-sized one?

salt and tajín rim

Pretty much the only thing I craved for the first six months of “quar” was tacos, usually vegetable because everything felt so heavy, I wanted food that felt light — black bean , cauliflower , sweet potato , heaped with avocado and crunchy slaws. In the background of this, this provided many, many excuses to finetune our house margarita. We’ve adjusted formulas a few times over the years [the 2007 Tart Marg tracks more closely with the International Bartenders Association (IBA) formula] but it was all in service of this, our forever margarita: tart but balanced, just barely sweet. If you can make it happen, fresh lime juice is my favorite part. A mixture of kosher salt and Tajín on the rim makes me feel like I’m on one of those vacations we missed. Tequila and your choice of triple sec or Cointreau round it out, but if you want a more clear lime flavor, you should know about Tommy’s margarita , which nixes the liqueur in favor of a couple spoonfuls of agave nectar. I hope the sun stays out where you are too, and this sets your weekend off cheerfully.

I use a 3:2:2 formula here, which is helpful to know for some future date when we resume having parties: this is so much fun to batch up. A 750-ml bottle of tequila holds just over 3 cups; add 2 cups each of lime juice and orange liqueur and ice for a pitcher. Tajín is a mixture of chili powder, lime, and salt that you should always buy two of (we put it on everything from tacos to this soup and these salads to hard-boiled eggs); you’ll be glad you did. I’m using Jose Cuervo (gold) tequila here, which is a good basic one. Shown here are two 11-ounce glasses .

  • 1 tablespoon kosher salt (I’m using Diamond)
  • 1 teaspoon Tajín or 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 3 lime wedges
  • 4 1/2 ounces (9 tablespoons) tequila
  • 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) Cointreau, Triple Sec, or Grand Marnier
  • 3 ounces (6 tablespoons) freshly squeezed lime juice

Combine salt and chili powder on a small rimmed plate. Swipe the rim of two glasses with the first lime wedge and dip it in the salt mixture. Fill glasses two-thirds of the way with ice. Combine tequila, Cointreau, and lime juice. If you’d like, you can shake it up in a cocktail shaker or jar with a few large ice cubes until the jar/shaker feels too cold to hold, or that’s my rule. Pour (strain if coming from a shaker) over ice in glasses, being careful not to rinse off the salt rim. Garnish each with remaining lime wedges.

Perfect timing for these as we head into the weekend. It’s sunny in Chicago – I’ll sit by the window as I drink this and pretend there’s a sunny beach right outside.

Tried this tonight and oh my goodness it was PERFECT!

We are invited to a friend’s house tonight for a Mexican themed evening and I am in charge of bringing the “craft cocktail”. I am a great mixologist (can I say that? LOL) and this is my go-to ingredient list for a classic margarita! The Trader Joe’s Chili Lime seasoning is wonderful in the salt mixture for the rim. I mix things up sometimes with throwing in some sliced jalapenos in the shaker for a lil kick, grapefruit juice, meyer lemon/lime juice combo (trust me, it rocks!), cilantro leaves in the shaker …. these all add a spin to the cocktail. Always making sure that only FRESH INGREDIENTS are used – that is the key! Salud!

These are great tips! Cilantro leaves in the shaker?! Thank you so much – I feel sunnier already!

Great ideas, thank you!

Just feeling the blues today, and wanted to say thank you; looking through these webpages, it feels like hanging with an old friend, and I feel some sense of inspiration and even excitement peaking back through! Thank you for showing up enthusiastically in this space all these years, for your charming/thoughtful recipe takes, for your hilarious and honest writing. You have helped me turn around more than one bad day. You’re the d#&n best and I am so grateful!

Exactly. I couldn’t agree more with this sentiment. Thank you for sharing.

Agree so much with this. I come here looking for inspiration for whatever is lurking in the fridge but more importantly I come here for your positivity, your humour, and your commitment to making cooking accessible to everyone. It means more to more people than you’ll ever know. I hope our next years are brighter, Deb.

I was just thinking something similar. I’m not a big cocktail drinker and don’t particularly like margaritas so I was going to scroll by, but the writing drew me in and then I’m off down a rabbit warren of links to old recipes. Lovely.

I adore margaritas and all your recipes, which never fail me, but mostly come to your blog for the same reason as these commenters. Thank you for the delightful writing, which always gives me a lift. That is no mean feat this year.

Same. I’m a massive fan for the recipes but also just…for your attitude. And humanity. Thank you. Hang in there, everyone.

Agree with all the above. Also, I’m sorry you got pooped on by a bird inside the store Deb, but it is giving me the giggles right now.

What all these others said. I love it when something (or nothing) sends me searching your recipes and stories. :)

Agreed! I came here this morning for an egg recipe and now I am dreaming of a margarita with friends!

Going down rabbit trails on the internet usually makes me feel as though I have wasted time, but getting drawn in to your lovely, honest, and funny writing makes me feel better about the world.

Thanks for nurturing and nourishing us through such a tough year!

I share this sentiment wholeheartedly. Well said.

How do you ALWAYS KNOW what I’m most interested in consuming?? It’s uncanny, and you are a treasure. Thank you, and cheers from Victoria, B.C.!

I second Tyler’s comment! Deb- I can’t tell you how often I’ve turned to your recipes for inspiration, including from your cookbooks, during this pandemic. It’s been tough, but we know it’s been tough for you too of course. So, thanks for always being there for us & coming up with just the antidote at just the right time, to help us chase away the blues and feed hungry bellies too. We ❤️ you. And now I will be making a couple of your margaritas. 🙃

I have made many many batches of your former recipe (2:1:1 ratio) and I always mention your comment “If you like your memories few and far between….” 😆😆

What juicer is that?

Yum! I too am interested in what juicer you are using. I am in the market for one. Thank you.

Deb, agreeing with other folks here. You’ve gotten us through this year in so many ways. You’re creative, compassionate, funny, and righteous. And every recipe I’ve made from this site has become part of my family life. Thank you for everything.

Deb, I can’t stand tequila so don’t think I will be making this. But! I have been using your pickled onion recipe to make slaw. I always keep a big mason jar of your pickled onions in the fridge (a triple recipe fills it right up), and then take out a good amount along with some of the pickling liquid and mix it with finely sliced cabbage. It’s even better if it can sit a bit, but so delicious!

Thank you for all the amazing recipes and I hope you have a great Purim.

I too hated tequila, but then I learned that was because all I knew of tequila was the mixtos (only 51% agave, like Jose) that I was exposed to in college.

I was persuaded to try a 100% agave tequila – Espolon Blanco – and much to my surprise I really liked it. If you ever feel like giving tequila another shot, try a 100% agave like Espolon and maybe you’ll discover you actually like good tequila.

What tequila do you recommend?

A Silver or Blanco 100% Blue Agave

You want 100% pure agave, so skip the mixtos (only 51% agave, like Jose).

I recommend Espolon Blanco – it’s delicious, widely available, and only $20-23 a bottle.

OMG! I had no idea Tommy’s was so famous outside of SF. I have been going there for ever and it changed my idea of what a margarita could be. We are lucky enough to have Eureka, Meyer lemons and Ranjpur limes in abundance at my dad’s house and the combo makes the best margarita. I have been known to use honey, if out of agave. I often make lime or lemon simple syrup and use that. I have also used Torani lime syrup, but it is hard to find. Also need to use our abundant citrus. Thanks for the marg update, looking forward to trying your tips

Can’t stop laughing!! A bird pooped on you in the store?!

This is a great, easy Margarita recipe. Sometimes I float a little Mezcal on top for a hit of smoky flavor!

Love the Idea of a mezcsl float. Thanks.

Wow–this is so weird because margaritas (and paper planes!) also got us through the first six months of the pandemic. In Toronto this week we finally had some sunny, “warmer” weather, and I was just thinking it’s time to make margaritas again.

Paper planes! I had one in a local restaurant (Knoxville, TN) a couple of years ago, assumed it was the bartender’s concoction, and was pleasantly surprised to discover it’s a real drink after lots of googling. Few down here have heard of it (trust me, I’ve asked) so we’ve taken to making our own, since we aren’t going anywhere anyway. So happy to hear/read of another fan. Cheers!

And here I thought you were making paper planes while consuming margaritas. The clarifying comment has got me curious to look into this beveragw

Barging in here, but I just had to share it’s honestly one of the best drinks! Given it’s reasonable to have aperol and bourbon on hand already, the only “out there” ingredient is the amaro nonino, but it’s shelf life is forever and there’s not really a good substitute — it is 1000% worth getting, trust me.

My Dad taught me to make margaritas when I was about 12. His proportions were the same as yours but his citrus of choice was lemon and frozen in ice cube trays. Everything was blended, then served in chilled coupes. I was glad to drink 7Up rather than the puckery cocktail. Fifty years later, I’m with you right to the Tajin on the rim. So delicious. Thanks for the laugh about the bird poop! Glad you folks a thawing out!

We grow lime and lemon trees… and often have margarita Thursdays. I agree with your recipe 100%! Would love to know the type of electric juicer you are using!

From my house halfway up a north-facing hill in the Yorkshire Penines, that sounds like heaven.

And yours sounds heavenly to me. I’m a Anglophile ❤️

Not only has Taco Tuesday become such an established part of the “quar” for us, but margaritas have been my jam as of late. I personally had fantasies about sitting on a warm beach somewhere and drinking icy margaritas and have followed my bliss. I’ve been using the frozen berries meant for smoothies for something extra – like a red raspberry margarita on Valentine’s Day. Had it with a big bowl of guacamole. Hit the spot. Rich picked me up Tesaro tequila which has been tasty. Cheers! L’chaim! Salut!

I feel moved to comment today Deb – your writing is so beautiful – I love your honesty, your gentle way with words, and your humour… I laughed out loud about the bird! What a sense of connection you evoke with your words. And yum, the enlivening refreshment of a balanced margarita!! Thank you.

I love Margaritas but they aren’t a drink I can have on a regular night and still, you know, actually parent. So I came up with the concept of a margarita mixer. Half strength margarita with tonic water. Delicious. My husband calls them Shargaritas. Will have to find Tajin in Australia, sounds yum.

I agree with Tyler and the others above ^^ thank you so much for helping to get me through the last year! I’ve relied so hard on your archives for good recipes and good cheer. Here’s to a better year ahead for all of us!!

So sorry about the bird pooping on your head. I think it was wise of you to make a margarita; that makes everything better

I’m hesitant to add this, given the name of the recipe, but have you ever tried the Cooks Illustrated margarita recipe? I think the best part is that you zest the limes (and lemons in that recipe), and let the zest soak in the juice for 4 to 24 hours. Just smelling those margaritas drives the winter blahs away. Based on the soaking time, it’s not a last minute recipe, but they are so good and fresh. I imagine any margarita recipe involving fresh squeezed juice could benefit from this.

What kind of juicer are you using? I’m ready for more fresh squeezed oj in my life!!

These remind me of a surf trip to Sayulita (spring 2019) that now feels like it was a different lifetime ago. Thank you for this spark of sunlight during this dark week, and for your honest writing throughout the last year. I’ll be raising a glass with this one tonight

Deb, I’m never quite sure what is meant when a recipe calls for “Chili Powder”, although, does the use of the ‘I’ ending indicate the American spice blend, as opposed to some powdered chilies? Thank for the recipe, might not be able to wait until March 13 (the day it all went to heck here)

We have crocuses popping up already in Boston! The seasons are changing and the vaccines give me so much hope- best wishes for the sunniest of Springs and lots of tacos either way. I love to read your posts and make your food.

Have you listened to the audio version of ‘Lincoln in the Bardo’? It is the best audiobook I have ever heard with an amazing cast, headlined by David Sedaris and Nick Offerman. Knocked my socks right off!

My dad gave me a bottle of Tajin months ago and I’ve never used it, but I will next time I make a marg!

Also, does it matter that Cointreau and Triple Sec have different alcohol contents?

Both will work here, but if you prefer one or the other you can use it. It’s a pretty boozy drink regardless; don’t forget to add a lot of ice!

This is why I love your website. No fancy recipe, with 1,000 ingredients, nothing new I have to cook and eat. This, is something I can make my husband, with chips and salsa, and we are on a trip to Cancún, in the living room. Thank you. Bless you. And Gracias, muy Bueno!

Where did you get that measuring cup? The measurement lines keep getting rubbed off on mine. Thanks!

Today was the one year anniversary of when we woke up sick…thankfully we both recovered but what a year. Yes, as usual you are right there with us in spirit, lol.

Used grand marnier but the recipe was too tart for me and my socially distanced backyard guests this weekend. Love the strong lime flavor but we had to add sweetener. Fortunately I bought some of the agave syrup to try the Tommy’s Margarita version, so we added that and the margaritas were perfect.

That must be some Covid style ventilation going on, to get pooped on by a bird in a store! I got pooped on by a seagull at the seashore once, if you can believe that. While all dressed and ready for a day of exploring tourist places in the harbor. It did NOT feel like good luck, and OMG the quantity and the smell! Anyway would like to echo the prevailing sentiment being expressed here. I have made a LOT of your recipes, and been pleased with most of them…but its the writing that draws me in as much as anything. It is so nice to have something pleasant and uplifting to get interested in, especially lately. Ive learned a ton, travelled vicariously, enjoyed hearing about your experiences, and eaten all kinds of good food, both literally and figuratively, thanks to you. You are a positive force even in bad times.

This is the worst margarita I’ve tasted. Used top shelf everything. Blah. Strong. Tart. No distinct flavor.

Use a better Tequila. 100% Blue Agave!

Looks good, I’m generally a fan of the 2:1:1 because it’s easier to remember…

Squeeze all the limes you have, double that with triple sec, double that with tequila, add a squeeze of simple syrup if the limes are too sour for your significant other.

I can’t tell you how delicious this looks! Why is it only Wednesday?! After a hard week, it’s so nice to kick back with a sweet cocktail to take the edges off! Thanks for this recipe!

I’ve been having problems printing out recipes from your website from various browsers such as SAFARI, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome. When I go to PRINT, I receive the message that the images are loading and it is stuck in that mode forever. Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks for letting me know. We are aware of the issue with Safari, but you’re the first to report it with other browsers. The bad news is they haven’t been able to fix it yet, but are working on it. The good news is that the print functionality for the site still works, just not the button itself, so you should still be able to print a recipe from the site in one of a few ways:

CTRL + P or ⌘ + P File > Print on a Mac From the share button (the one that looks like an up-arrow coming out of a box) at the bottom of the Safari browser on iOS

I hope this helps and the button should be working again in no time.

For some reason, in defiance of the calendar indicating St. Patrick’s Day is soon and corned beef is in abundance, the cabbages in my grocery store are unusually tiny, so I introduced my complaining customers to the “apartment-size” concept. Their amusement almost made them forget they were having to buy three cabbages!

Ohhh yes Deb! I remember wondering if the shut down could possibly last until the end of the school year. It’s been quite a year, hasn’t it? But I like how you think and I think this margarita will be made this weekend :) Thanks for the idea. And tacos too!!

The Cointreau makes ALL the difference!

Tequila, check. Limes, check. Tajín, check. I sadly don’t have Cointreau nor Triple Sec on hand though…but do have Solerno blood orange liquor. Wondering if that might work?. This will be my first time making margaritas, so I’d rather not screw it up and waste the tequila. Any insight anyone could provide would be awesome!

If you don’t have Cointreau or another Triple Sec, leave it out and replace it with agave syrup/nectar or simple syrup (1:1 sugar to water) to make a Tommy’s Margarita.

To match this ratio: 1.5 oz tequila 1 oz lime juice 0.5 oz agave syrup or 1 oz simple syrup

I prefer more tequila flavour, so I like: 2 oz tequila 1 oz lime juice 0.5 oz agave or 1 oz simple syrup

And for a delicious and stunning variation, make a Devil’s Margarita by making it with simple syrup and then floating 0.5-1 oz red wine (such as Pinot Noir) on top.

Never thought I’d see the day when restaurants in Virginia were allowed to sell “to go” alcoholic beverages, but here we are still! We got take-out from our fave local Mexican place yesterday and you guessed it, we got a margarita to go. I drank half of it last night, stuck the rest in the freezer, and had just gotten it out to finish off when I opened your webpage. I’d call this serendipity! Thanks for giving me years of good food and great humor. I’m sipping and enjoying.

Sounds divine! The warmer weather has me craving all the cocktails and Chardonnay. Oh but I’m 5 months pregnant! Maybe I’ll try a heavily limed glass of seltzer with a salted rim? :)

Is there anything a good margarita won’t fix? We think not. We use a tad more tequila (we love the Cazadores Reposado for the rooty flavor), skip the salt but never the lime swipe, and shake that thing ’til my hands feel in danger of frost bite. We rarely have just one. But don’t do three. There will be regrets. So sorry about the poop. Bird crap–the worst. That watery bit! Ugh!

You’re a gem. Thanks for all the good cheer.

Making this tonight! The weather in MA is spectacular for a change. What a treat to follow your blog and to read the many comments. It looks like we are all in good company. Feels like a sisterhood (hope that’s ok to say) of amazing people coming together to enjoy good food and chat. Thanks again!

This was absolutely perfect. Just the right way to end a long work week. But where are you. I can’t be the only one missing you- I hope all is well and will be waiting for your next post/recipe

Thank you. I’m sorry; I hate being away. I was under the weather (not Covid! not pregnancy! just an annoying bug and no appetite) and getting back to it. I’m currently restocking the content cache with the holidays and spring in mind and will be back hopefully tomorrow. xo

I was wondering the same thing. Sending well wishes your way and hopes for a speedy recovery. Cheers!

Oh Deb I love your writing and that you had the misfortune of having a bird poop on you inside of a store. Yours are the only food blog posts that I don’t rush to skip to get to the recipe!

By the way, I told a neighbor this and she was surprised I didn’t know there’s been a bird hanging out over the produce section, which is somehow even funnier to me, that this is a Known Issue.

I’ve been living in Mexico for several years, in a beach town close to Puerto Vallarta. If a Margarita using that recipe were presented to someone here, it would be sent back immediately, as it is entirely too sour!

The recipe used by most bartenders anywhere I have been in Mexico is as follows:

1 cup Tequila 1/3 cup orange liqueur (Cointreau OR Controy) 1/4 cup lime juice 2 TBsp of Agave syrup OR sugar syrup

They are more often served “frozen” (made in a blender) than on the rocks, although that is a personal preference and 90% are made with simply plain sea salt on the rim.

Frozen: Fill up the blender about 3/4 full with ice. Add the above ingredients and blend it for quite a while. Add more ice, blend again until it’s like a slushie. Taste for sweetness/tartness.

Regards, JJ Dutton

My son & his wife bought a fanciful butter dish with the top of an orange & white cat who has a long tail which is nice to hold to remove the top. I don’t see butter dishes featured on your website. :(

Made these last night and they were spectacular! My sisters and I loved them, slightly tart, but smooth and mellow at once. Will definitely make a gain.

Just made it. They were perfect!

I think I need these in my life very soon! Cheers!

Deb, I think you and your margaritas deserve a better tequila to make them truly perfect. :)

I really like Espolon Blanco because it’s delicious and inexpensive, but if you prefer a reposado I’ve heard great things about Casadores, Chamucos, and especially Casa Noble Reposados.

Espolon Blanco is perfect for margaritas! It is usually my go to. If I’m feeling fancy, I will splurge on Casamigos.

Thursday evening, just after 6pm and it’s 71 degrees here on my back deck just outside Portland, Oregon. The nicest day of the year so far! I’m enjoying this marvelous margarita while listening to Hawaiian music and daydreaming of surf and sand. It’s been a tough week (and not yet the end of my work week) and this is just the getaway I need. Thank you for the recipe. Reading your writing, both on this blog and in your cookbooks, never fails to lift my spirits.

Made a double batch of these last night and they were fantastic! My limes were kind of dry, and I had to get more; the market had sweet limes, which I decided to try. Great decision. Used half “regular” limes and half “sweet” limes. So tasty. Making another batch tonight!

This recipe makes one really great margarita! I’ve been faithful to the standard 2:1:1 recipe for so long, but I really like how this 3:2:2 ratio brings the citrus notes forward. I always use half fresh lemon/lime juice in my margaritas, instead of just like juice. I find the lemon adds a nice brightness to the drink. I think this recipe would also be great frozen with a few frozen strawberries throw into the mix.

A perfect margarita indeed! I’ve tried a couple of others before, and had a well meaning neighbor drop-off her version, but we were disappointed. Indeed, my daughter was concerned that with a lack of simple syrup it would be too sour for her. But it was great – we all enjoyed it – and very glad we weren’t driving! ;-)! Perfect pairing with our Peruvian chicken and pork carnitas for a post Cinco de Maya feast!

Friends don’t let friends drink Cuervo. Hornitos Reposado by Sauza is a great alternative at a similar price point.

I am so doing this tomorrow

This is disgusting. Please remove this from the internet and wash your computer with strong detergent. I gave it a chance and made this exactly. Just awful.

Ha! Too sour? Too strong?

Just made one for New Year‘s Eve and found it excellent. A peaceful happy New Year to all of you!

AWFUL-ly delicious!

Please share the brand of your citrus juicer.

I have the Breville ; it’s very fast and all of the parts are dishwasher-safe. You can see this and more kitchen favorites, if you’re curious, on this page .

Yummy in my tummy! Always have 6-10 peeps around for a cocktail! What can I do ahead of Time??

All of it except shaking over ice!

I like this marg, but I highly recommend that you try mandarin Napoleon liquor as the orange , subbing for any of the other you mention. Promise to try it. Another level marg. Great site, and following you on instagram

Better yet, use Patron Citronge. Better tasting orange liqueur!

Jimmy Buffett passed away last night and I felt compelled to make these in his honor. What a fitting tribute! Great margaritas and we live in Mexico!

Oof; these are STRONG. Love the flavor, but the lime juice isn’t enough of a mixer for me.

I live in Mexico, and it’s surprising how many BAD margaritas I’ve had here. And I’ve had a lot! This is the perfect recipe. It’s foolproof and completely balanced. And the mix of tajin and kosher salt is the right way to rim! Bravo!

Indulge in the ultimate warm-weather refreshment with our Orange Margarita recipe! Bursting with zesty citrus flavors, it’s a tantalizing twist on the classic margarita, perfect for savoring sunny days.

Orange Margarita in a glass with lime and orange on the rim.

It is no secret that my go-to beverage is a Margarita. The first time I had an Orange Margarita, I was sitting in a lounge chair on the beach, and a server brought it to me. Now, when I make these at home, I try to pick a warm day so that I can sit on my patio, close my eyes, take a sip, and almost be transported back to that beach. The fresh citrus flavors of this Margarita truly make it taste tropical. So, if you want a light and fresh Margarita, this recipe is for you!

If you enjoy all things margarita, then I recommend checking out my Jalapeño Margarita , Cadillac Margarita , and Avocado Margaritas !

The type of tequila you use can greatly influence the flavor of your margarita. While we recommend Silver or Blanco Tequila, you could try Reposado as well

Blanco Tequila (also known as Silver or Plata): This is a clear, unaged tequila that provides a pure, robust agave flavor. It’s often used in margaritas because of its assertive flavor which holds up well against the lime and orange juices. If you want your margarita to have a bold tequila taste, blanco tequila is the way to go.

On the other hand, Reposado means “rested,” and these tequilas are aged in oak barrels for between 2 months to 1 year. This aging process mellows the agave flavor and imparts a subtle woody or caramel-like flavor. Reposado tequila can make your margarita more smooth and complex.

  • The zesty orange and lime combo in Orange Margaritas provides a refreshing , tangy taste that’s perfect for cooling off on warm days.
  • Its adaptability is for various occasions, from casual get-togethers to formal parties.
  • The ease of using simple , readily available ingredients.
  • The vibrant orange hue and garnishes make it not just a drink, but a visually appealing addition to any social gathering.
  • The perfect blend of sweetness from the orange and tartness from the lime.

Orange Margarita on a wooden board with a cocktail shaker.

  • Fresh Orange Juice: It imparts the unique, fresh, and fruity orange flavor that defines this cocktail.
  • Silver Tequila: As the core spirit of the margarita, it provides the classic alcoholic kick.
  • Cointreau: This orange-flavored liqueur enriches the drink with additional citrus notes and a touch of sweetness.

See the recipe card for full information on ingredients and quantities.

  • Blood Orange Juice: Swap the regular orange juice for blood orange juice to add a unique twist with its distinct, slightly tart flavor and deep red color.
  • Grapefruit Juice: Mix in some grapefruit juice with the orange juice for a bittersweet tang, adding a different layer of citrus complexity.
  • Sparkling Orange Margarita: For a bubbly twist on this classic, top off your Orange Margarita with a splash of club soda. Prepare your margarita as directed, but before garnishing, pour a bit of chilled club soda into the glass—about 1 to 2 oz. This will not only give your drink a delightful fizzy texture but also slightly dilute the cocktail, making it a bit lighter. It’s the perfect way to add refreshing bubbles to your margarita!
  • Triple Sec: Use Triple Sec instead of Cointreau. It’s another type of orange liqueur but slightly less sweet and more affordable, while still offering a citrusy depth.
  • Agave Syrup: Substitute simple syrup with agave syrup for a more authentic Mexican flavor.

Step #1: Rim your favorite glass with sugar and add ice.

Step #2: Pour the tequila, Cointreau, simple syrup, lime juice, and orange juice into a cocktail shaker over ice. If you do not have a cocktail shaker and are in need of one, I recommend the Cocktail Shaker Bar Set from Amazon.

Step #3: Shake it up.

Step #4: Pour into your prepared glass, garnish with a lime and orange slice, and enjoy!

  • Freshly Squeezed Juices: Always use freshly squeezed orange and lime juices. Fresh juices are more flavorful and less processed than store-bought, bottled ones.
  • Balance Your Sweet and Sour: Adjust the amount of simple syrup and lime juice to achieve the perfect balance between sweetness and tartness according to your preference.
  • Experiment with Salt and Sugar Rims: While sugar is a great choice for a sweeter touch, a salt rim can beautifully contrast and enhance the sweet and sour flavors of the margarita. Trying a mix of both can also be delightful.
  • Shake until Chilled: Shake the cocktail until the shaker feels cold, which usually takes about 15 seconds, to ensure it’s well-chilled.

Yes, you can substitute Cointreau with another orange liqueur like Grand Marnier or Triple Sec.

Yes, you can make a larger batch in a large pitcher and refrigerate it. Just leave out the ice until you’re ready to serve to avoid diluting the margarita.

You can substitute the tequila and Cointreau with more orange juice and a splash of lime soda for a refreshing mocktail.

For a sugar-free option, rim the glass with finely ground sea salt or a sugar substitute.

Yes, feel free to experiment with grapefruit, lemon, or tangerine for a twist on the classic flavor.

Orange Margarita, served in a chilled glass with a sugar-rimmed edge.

Orange Margarita is best enjoyed fresh , but if you need to store it, keep it in the refrigerator. In a sealed container, it will stay good for up to 24 hours. The flavors are most vibrant when fresh, so it’s not ideal for long-term storage.

16 Margarita Recipes That Taste Like the Weekend

From hibiscus and coconut to classic and frozen, there's a margarita recipe for every occasion on our list.

On the rocks or frozen, rimmed with flaky salt or without—what could be more festive than the classic margarita ? Invite a few close friends over, break out the chips and guacamole , and you have the makings of an impromptu party. And if you happen to enjoy the tart pleasures of your refreshing cocktail at sunset in a postcard-perfect setting, all the better!

As much as we love the taste and simplicity of traditional margarita recipes (all you really need are tequila, triple sec , fresh lime, and agave or simple syrup, plus a cocktail shaker or a blender) we also like to mix it up. Add a hint of heat (say yes to muddled serrano chile!) or something sweet (like juicy mango) to take the classic in a new direction. In other words, the margarita is a drink with infinite possibilities. Cheers to new takes on a dear old friend!

Classic Margarita

The classic margarita first made a splash back in the 1950s, and it's still going strong. So, what gives this delightful cocktail its staying power? Just four simple ingredients (or five, if you choose to rim the glass with a dose of coarse salt).

View Recipe

Texas Margarita

Even small tweaks, like adding freshly squeezed orange juice, can lend a different dimension to the classic margarita. (And yes, freshly squeezed makes a difference, so carve out a few extra minutes!)

Lemon Mezcal Margarita

What happens when you swap out lemon juice for lime and mezcal for tequila? Suddenly, your favorite poolside cocktail has a whole new flavor profile. Rim the glass with salt and pepper, and savor the difference.

Smoky Serrano-Mint Margarita

This riff on the margarita not only brings the heat, courtesy of roasted serrano chile pepper—it also offers the cool relief of fresh mint. Muddle the solid ingredients right in the glass, add sumac to the flaky sea salt rim, and presto! You have a delicious departure from the classic.

Frozen Mango Margarita

It wouldn't be a margarita party without a frozen take or two. While mango is the star in this margarita recipe, reposado tequila keeps the sweetness in check, adding a hint of smoky flavor.

Frozen Pomegranate Margaritas

Sweet yet tart, this margarita recipe is made with frozen pomegranate cubes and traditional margarita ingredients. Another sublime reason to surrender to the blender.

Hibiscus Margarita

Pretty in pink, this margarita recipe introduces an element of the unexpected thanks to homemade hibiscus-ginger syrup. A spritz of seltzer ups the refreshment factor.

Watermelon Margarita

Nothing says summer quite like watermelon —unless, of course, we're talking about margaritas. Combine watermelon cubes and margarita fixings, dip your glasses in lime juice and salt, and say hello to the ultimate drink of the season.

Grapefruit and Honey Margarita

Honey stands in for orange liqueur in this recipe, lending flavor with less of an alcoholic punch. Grapefruit is also front and center, adding just the right amount of citrus refreshment.

Morning Margarita

Move over mimosas! Make room at the brunch table for this scrumptious cocktail made with bittersweet orange marmalade and agave wine, which has about half the alcohol of its cousin tequila.

Coconut Margarita

Why should piña colada have all the coconut fun? Featuring shredded coconut, this margarita recipe takes a bit of extra effort, but it's totally worth it for a drink you'll crave from this moment on.

Cranberry Margarita

We're rewriting the rules on margaritas, and that includes a festive cocktail made with cranberry simple syrup. You might even blend up a batch while waiting for Santa to squeeze down your chimney!

Winter Cadillac Margarita

Citrus is a natural when it comes to margaritas, and tangerine is no exception to the rule. In fact, tangerine juice, Grand Marnier, and silver tequila are the ultimate margarita dream team.

Ginger Margarita

Ginger might not be the first ingredient you think of for margaritas, but combined with lime, it provides a flavor punch you won’t soon forget. Just a few simple steps and voila! Margarita perfection.

Kiwi Margarita

With its brilliant green hue and distinctive flavor, kiwi delights the eye and the palate like few other fruits. Add tequila, lime juice, and triple sec for an unforgettable margarita.

Peppadew Margarita

If you like your margaritas with a hint of sweet heat, look no further than this recipe. Made with Peppadew® brine, and Peppadew as a garnish, it's sure to be a favorite in your margarita repertoire.

Esperanza, an Auberge Resort

Margarita Recipes From Some Of My Favorite Mexican Resorts | The Hungry Chronicles

Last but certainly not least in this roundup of margarita recipes and my favorite Mexican resorts is Esperanza back in Cabo. In 2019 it was named the #1 “Best Hotel In Mexico” in U.S. News & World Report Best Hotel Rankings, and this resort is perfect for a romantic getaway. It’s tucked between two scenic bluffs so it’s the only private beach resort in the area. Many of their casitas and suites offer 180° views of the Sea Of Cortez, infinity edge hot tubs on the terrace and interiors that transform into dramatic indoor/outdoor living spaces. Inside, no detail has been overlooked in providing you absolute comfort, such as deep-soaking tubs and luxurious Italian linens. Clients booked here will enjoy an upgrade at check-in if available, a $35 daily breakfast credit per person for 2 people per bedroom, a $100 resort credit (for those margaritas by the pool), early check-in/late check-out if available, and complimentary wifi. They too have some pretty awesome promotions going on at the moment, such as a complimentary 4th night that includes airport transfers, stay 7 pay for 5, and a promotion that includes a $500 resort credit for stays of 6 nights–just to name a few.

Their yummy margarita recipe includes some refreshing cucumber that makes for a pretty electric green drink:

  • 2 oz. silver tequila (100 percent blue agave)
  • 1 oz. pineapple juice
  • 4 cucumber slices
  • 7 fresh cilantro leaves
  • ½ oz. fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • ½ oz. agave or simple syrup
  • 1½ cucumber slices, for garnish

Muddle cucumber slices, cilantro leaves, and tequila in a cocktail shaker and strain into a separate glass. Rinse shaker. Add the infused tequila, pineapple and lime juices, and agave to the shaker, fill with ice, and shake ten seconds. Serve in a salt-rimmed margarita or whisky glass and garnish with cucumbers.

Tropical Margaritas

pinterest collage image for tropical margarita

Tropical Margaritas are refreshing frozen cocktails.

Tropical Margaritas in a margarita glass with lime wedge

If you’re a lover of margaritas, this is definitely one to try. And if you love a good fruit smoothie recipe, then you’ll probably like these as well! Tropical margaritas are like the best fruit smoothies with tequila added in and turned into margaritas. And there’s a tropical twist to them too.

Make these for Cinco de Mayo or to celebrate the end of the week or for Happy Hour with friends! Everyone loves a good, fruity, frozen cocktail.

Table of Contents

How to make Tropical Margaritas:

You’ll need a good blender- one that can truly blend the ice into a slushie texture. There’s nothing worse than having big chunks of ice swimming around in your frozen margarita! You want all of that ice crushed down blended nicely. The Vitamix is the most amazing blender for making smoothies and cocktails. The Waring brand is a cheaper alternative that works pretty well too.

You’ll need tequila and triple sec for your alcohol in these margaritas. Those are combined with sweet and sour mix (or margarita mix), fresh lime juice, mango, pineapple and kiwi. Those are all blended together to create tropical margaritas.

Margarita glasses:

I love the blown glass, Mexican style glasses like these >> set of 4 Handblown Margarita Glasses . Or you can opt for a more basic set of four margarita glasses . If you are having a larger party, I suggest going to Costco, liquor store or party store to see if you can buy a set of 24 glasses. Plastic margarita glasses are an option too.

Substitution suggestions:

There is an option in the recipe to use either margarita mix or sweet and sour mix. It’s really your preference. If you want a little bit of coconut flavor added in, you can make ice cubes out of coconut water, or you can add in about 1/4 cup coconut milk or coconut cream. Leave out the kiwi if you’d like. Kiwis are not technically a tropical fruit as much as pineapple and mango. But they are a nice addition to these tropical margaritas, and I like the black dots they add to the drink!

close up of tropical margarita with lime wedge

How to edge the rims of a margarita glass:

Margaritas are usually edged with margarita salt . Some people don’t like a salt rim, so you can certainly leave it plain if you’d like. To salt the rim, dip the margarita glass in a plate filled with fresh lime or orange juice, and then dip into the margarita salt. You’ll pour the drink into the glass after you’ve salted the rim. If you’d like a sweet rim, you can dip the glass in superfine sugar instead. Superfine sugar can be found in your market’s baking aisle. Or you can give regular sugar a whir in your blender to turn it into superfine sugar.

Make some tropical margaritas, and enjoy!

Here are a few more recipes for margaritas that you might like to try:

Tropical Margaritas in a margarita glass with lime wedge

Recipe Details

Ingredients.

  • 4½ ounces tequila
  • 2 ounces triple sec
  • 2 ounces margarita mix or sweet and sour mix
  • 1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
  • 2 ripe mangoes, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple chunks
  • 1 whole kiwi, peeled and chopped
  • lime wedges, for garnish
  • superfine sugar

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients (except lime and sugar) in a blender and process until smooth.
  • Place sugar in low, flat bowl. Run lime wedge around rims of margarita glasses and dip rims lightly in sugar. Alternately, you can dip in salt for a more traditional margarita.
  • Pour drinks into margarita glasses and serve.
  • *If you wish to make a non-alcoholic version (for yourself... or for the children), just leave out the tequila and triple sec and pour in a little orange juice instead. It's still delicious!

Grand Marnier Golden Margarita Cocktail Drink Recipe

Looking for a quick & easy Golden Margarita to make at home? You’ve come to the right place!

Our refreshing Mexican cocktail recipe features premium gold tequila (Reposado or Añejo), Grand Marnier cognac orange liqueur, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, salt rim and lime slice garnish.

Leave that basic tequila blanco on your bar cart and elevate your next margarita by using an oak barrel aged Reposado or Añejo.

What Is A Golden Margarita?

A margarita is a Mexican cocktail consisting of tequila, orange liqueur, and lime juice often served with salt on the rim of the glass. The drink is served shaken with ice, blended with ice, or without ice.

According to cocktail historian David Wondrich, the margarita is related to a popular Mexican drink, the Daisy (margarita is Spanish for daisy), remade with tequila instead of brandy . Daisies are a family of cocktails that include a base spirit, liqueur, and citrus.

It became popular during Prohibition as American residents travelled to Mexico for alcohol. There is an account from 1936 of Iowa newspaper editor James Graham finding such a cocktail in Tijuana, years before any of the other margarita creation myths.

One of the earliest stories is of the margarita being invented in 1938 by Carlos “Danny” Herrera at his restaurant Rancho La Gloria, halfway between Tiju ana and Rosarito. He apparently created it for customer and former Ziegfeld dancer Marjorie King, who was allergic to many spirits, but not to tequila. This story was related by Herrera and also by bartender Albert Hernandez, acknowledged for popularizing a margarita in San Diego after 1947, at the La Plaza restaurant in La Jolla.

The Golden Margarita, which is sometimes called a Grand Marnier Margarita, offers a slight riff on the classic Mexican cocktails standard ingredients. Triple Sec is swapped with the more luxurious Grand Marnier and blanco tequila is substituted with a golden coloured aged reposado or anejo.

Traditional Grand Marnier "Golden Margarita" recipe ingredients.

Travel To Mexico to Taste The Best Tequila

There’s no better way to familiarize yourself with the perfect Grand Marnier Margarita then by planning a vacation to visit the world’s best tequila distilleries .

As cocktail enthusiasts we’ve traveled the world to visit the best tequila, gin , whiskey and rum distilleries.

We love traveling to Mexico . We’ve sipped tequila muddled cocktails in Puerto Vallarta , Los Cabos , Mexico City, Merida , Chichen Itza and Playa del Carmen.

The bar at Four Seasons Mexico City is ranked as one of the best cocktail bars in the country. The creative mixologists behind the Four Seasons bar make classic cocktails, eye-popping modern marvels and refreshing drinks like a Golden Margarita.

If you want to learn first hand how tequila is made we suggest planning a trip to Jalisco. All tequila is produced in this state, while other agave-based distilled spirits made outside the region are called mezcal.

At the end of a tequila distillery tour you’ll enjoy a tutored tasting and opportunity to sip a Golden Margarita at the bar.

Prepare our easy Golden Margarita in a cocktail shaker.

Grand Marnier Margarita Recipe Ingredients

Our homemade cocktail is made with fresh and premium ingredients:

  • Reposado Tequila : also known as Gold Tequila, has been rested and aged in French oak barrels for 2-12 months, giving it a golden colour (“reposado” means “rested” in Spanish). The amber hue of the tequila is what gives this cocktail its unique appearance. In addition to the different colour, aged tequila has a smoother flavour profile than more basic blanco tequila, which is bottled directly after being distilled.
  • Grand Marnier : is a French brand of liqueurs. The brand’s best-known product is Grand Marnier Cordon Rouge, an orange-flavoured liqueur created in 1880 by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle. It is made from a blend of Cognac brandy, distilled essence of bitter orange, and sugar, containing 40% alcohol.
  • Lime Juice : we always suggest juicing fresh limes as you’ll taste the difference. Do not use citrus juice from concentrate.
  • Simple Syrup : you can easily make  homemade simple syrup , which is prepared by heating equal parts water and white sugar.
  • Salt : we suggest decorating the rim of your cocktail glass with kosher salt.
  • Lime Slice : garnish the cocktail glass with a fresh lime slice, wheel or wedge.

This cocktail is easy to make at home in just 3 quick steps. It takes less than 5 minutes to make!

  • Combine liquid ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously with ice to chill for 20-30 seconds.
  • Strain into an ice-filled salt-rimmed rocks glass.
  • Garnish with lime slice.

A Golden Margarita is unique in that it features Golden Tequila and Grand Marnier orange liqueur.

Golden Margarita Recipe Tips

This cocktail recipe is easy to make at home, ready to serve in under 5 minutes.

We love serving our Golden Margarita recipe in the hot summer months. The refreshing tequila cocktail is a crowd pleaser at garden parties, family barbecues and cottage cocktail hours.

Our Grand Marnier Margarita serves one person. If you’re hosting a large gathering feel free to multiply the ingredients by the number of guests and muddle the drink in a punch bowl or jug rather than a cocktail shaker.

We suggest storing the tequila and Grand Marnier bottles in your freezer an hour before guests arrive so they are will chilled when you’re ready to shake up drinks.

We’ve used simple syrup in this recipe but you can substitute for agave syrup if you prefer.

We’ve made this drink with a salted rim but if you don’t like salty beverages you can skip this step.

Serve the Mexican drink in a rocks glass with salt rim and lime wedge garnish.

Best Bartender Tools & Cocktail Equipment

Before hosting a swanky Golden Margarita soiree you’ll need to ensure you have the best bartender tools and cocktail equipment.

  • Cocktail Kit : cocktail kits are the perfect gift for newbie mixology fans as they include basic bartender tools like a jigger, shaker and spoon.
  • Cocktail Shaker : a bartender’s best friend. Purchase a premium cocktail shaker to muddle or shake up your favourite pink gin cocktails.
  • Cocktail Glassware : make sure your bar is stocked with a selection of unique glassware to show off your favourite cocktail creations.
  • Hawthorne Strainer :  this unique strainer features tightly wound coils and perforated holes. It keeps ice and other large ingredients like lime wedges in your cocktail shaker rather than in the glass.
  • Bar Spoons : slender and long bar spoons are a must-have when stirring drinks.
  • Bottle Opener : easily open bottles of beer or cider with the flick of your wrist or purchase a corkscrew for fine wine.
  • Pouring Spout : once you’ve opened a new bottle of gin insert these affordable pourers to make cocktail assembly a breeze.
  • Cutting Board : purchase a petite cutting board for your bar to slice garnishes or citrus wedges like lime, orange, lemon or grapefruit.
  • Ice Bucket : chill bottles of gin quickly in an ice bucket or keep by the bar when muddling gin mixers into cool creations.
  • Ice Crusher : fans of the Mint Julep love an ice crusher.
  • Ice Cube Kit:  we suggest purchasing a selection of ice cube trays. Silicone styles are our favourite as they’re easy to clean and are available in various shapes and sizes.
  • Jigger : use a jigger to accurately measure spirits, juices, syrups and shrubs.
  • Juicer : invest in an electronic juicer or buy an affordable hand-held to easily juice fresh citrus like lemons and limes.
  • Muddler : fans of the Mojito love a sturdy muddler to mix mint and lime. Muddler’s are handy for any cocktail featuring ingredients that need a pounding like fresh herbs or citrus wedges.
  • Citrus Peeler  &  Zester : adorn your craft cocktails with a thick citrus peel or finer ribbons of lime or lemon zest.
  • Rimmer : Bloody Mary and Caesar lovers should outfit their bar with a handy rimmer for salting and sugaring glassware.

A classic Grand Marnier Margarita colour gets its colour from gold coloured Anejo or Reposado tequila.

Reposado VS Añejo

Golden Margaritas get their unique colour by substituting simple blanco tequila with an aged Reposado, as the spirit takes on an amber colour when resting in oak barrels.

To be called a Reposado the tequila must be aged for at least 2 months. If you’re getting fancy you can use an even finer bottle of tequila called añejo, which are aged for a longer period of time, at least one year.

So the major difference between a Reposado and Añejo tequila is simply time. The latter is more expensive due to its aging requirements and has a smoother mouthfeel.

Now you're an expert on how to make the perfect Golden Margarita recipe!

Mistletoe Margarita Holiday Cocktail 3

Ingredients

  • 2 oz tequila Blanco or reposado
  • 1 oz triple sec
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1/2 cup cranberry juice
  • Salt/Sugar or crushed candy cane rim
  • 2-3 Cranberries
  • Sprig of rosemary
  • Mini candy cane

Instructions

  • 1. Sugar/Salt/crushed candy cane rim. Put salt or sugar or crused candy cane on a plate. For salt/sugar run water over edge of glass then turn the glass edge into the salt/sugar to coat. For candy/cane the cane is sticky itself so don't use water, if the cane isn't sticking very well you can put simple syrup or syrup on a plate, coat the rims of the glass and then dip in the candy cane.
  • 2. Get a shaker, add in ice, tequila, triple sec, cranberry juice & lime juice into shaker and shake it up. If you don't have a shaker you can just add to a large cup and stir or use two cups and pour back and forth into each other to mix up.
  • 3. Pour over ice and garnish.

In Search of the Ultimate Margarita

April 23, 2024, story: chloe frechette, photo: lizzie munro, we asked 11 of america’s best bartenders to submit their finest recipe for the margarita—then blind-tasted them all to find the best of the best..

In some ways, the story of the modern Margarita is the story of tequila. In 2018, when we last blind-tasted the drink , we were pleased to find that the Margarita had long since moved on from the mixto tequila that had plagued it in the preceding decades in favor of versions made with 100 percent agave. At our recent tasting, not only was every tequila made from 100 percent agave, eight out of 11 were additive-free . The more the industry embraces the very best tequila , the more the Margarita improves. Today, the Margarita has never been better.

When the Punch editorial team convened on a recent Wednesday at Manhattan’s Superbueno with owner Ignacio “Nacho” Jimenez and Milady’s head bartender, Izzy Tulloch, we were in search of the ideal combination of “booze, citrus and salt,” according to Jimenez. “It’s all about how you balance those three.” For the first element, we were looking for a tequila with that quintessential peppery bite and green, vegetal tones. As for the lime, “it’s gotta have some zip,” according to Tulloch, meaning it had to be fresh and there had to be enough of it to be borderline mouth-puckering. For the salt, and whether or not it belongs on the rim of the glass, all agreed with Punch editor-in-chief Talia Baiocchi: “You gotta have it.”

Ultimate Best Margarita recipe

Though the personal preferences of the judges each aligned with the more austere build of a Tommy’s Margarita , i.e., a Margarita that gets its sweetness from agave nectar in the absence of orange liqueur, only two of the 11 submitted recipes adhered to that model, and neither took the top spot. Instead, two of our three favorites took a hybrid approach—each called on orange liqueur, albeit in a quantity less than that of the lime, a notable departure from the typical even split between those ingredients.

The unanimous winner was Christine Wiseman’s Margarita , which builds on two ounces of Cascahuín blanco tequila, an ounce of lime juice, half an ounce of Cointreau and half an ounce of agave syrup (in a 1:1 ratio of agave nectar to water) served in a glass with a half salt rim and a lime wheel garnish. “It’s got zip,” confirmed Tulloch, but it also had the appropriate amount of body without being too sweet. And even though it contained orange liqueur, which can sometimes lend an unpleasant confectionary note to the drink, it was the tequila that shone through. “The tequila is so beautiful,” said Jimenez. “[This one] really stands out from the rest.”

Best Margarita Recipe

Christine Wiseman’s Margarita

This winning recipe is a hybrid of a classic Margarita and a Tommy’s.

Second place went to Natasha Bermudez, whose Margarita calls for Tapatío blanco tequila, three-quarters of an ounce of lime juice, and a half-ounce each of Cointreau and light agave syrup. The judges found the tequila was present and “stuck around,” in Tulloch’s words, sporting a classic peppery quality that we were all looking for, backed by the archetypal citrusy, salty notes of a classic Marg. The judges’ only qualm was with the Tajín rim, which counterintuitively made the drink taste sweeter—almost too sweet. Sal de gusano, an alternative garnish recommended by Bermudez, might’ve been preferred.

Third place went to Yana Volfson’s Margarita , which uses Tapatío 110 as the base, paired with an ounce of lime juice and a half-ounce each of Giffard and Combier triple sec. It drank on the leaner side (it was the only one in our top three without agave syrup), which was preferred by several judges, and had “literally perfect flavor,” said Tulloch.

On the whole, the entrants painted a picture of a classic cocktail reaching its greatest potential. An appreciation of high-quality, unadulterated tequila paired with a more lime-forward construction has built up the drink into a fail-safe order. Now, according to Tulloch, the Margarita “is like pizza: Even if it’s bad, it’s still a good drink.”

Zapote’s Zapote 70 – serve it straight up or over ice.

Cocktail of the week: Zapote’s Zapote 70 – recipe

A margarita using both mezcal and tequila, with a hint of sweet almond for added depth

T his take on the margarita uses both tequila and mezcal , with orgeat for a little balancing sweetness. It’s relatively straightforward, but complex in both execution and taste. When we came up with the idea, we applied the same principles as those we have in the kitchen, using only a few ingredients and letting the produce shine. We serve this straight up, but it’s also enjoyable over ice.

30ml blanco tequila – we use Casamigos 5ml mezcal – we use Ojo De Dios eight-year-old 15ml orgeat syrup – we make our own, but Giffard do a good one (or 5ml Disaranno or 2 drops of almond essence) 20ml fresh lemon juice 1 strip lemon peel , to finish

Put all the liquids in a shaker, add a big handful of ice and shake for 30 seconds. Double strain into a coupette (chilled, if you like), rub the lemon peel around the rim of the glass and serve.

Things To Do

Restaurants food and drink, restaurants food and drink | recipe: this tasty salad was developed by the chef at london’s tate museum.

Author

My sister-in-law Sue Young, hornswoggled this delicious salad recipe from the chef at the Tate Museum in London in the early ’80s. At that time, we were conducting a culinary tour that included cooking classes in London, Florence, and Venice.

The salad includes some sweet components that add zing to the mix, including diced sweet pickle, golden raisins, and a honey-spiked vinaigrette.

Joan Cromwell’s Salad

Yield: 8 servings as a first course, 4 as a main course

INGREDIENTS

1 pound fresh green beans

Vinaigrette

1/4 cup white wine vinegar

1/2 teaspoon salt and white pepper to taste

1 teaspoon dry ground mustard

1 tablespoon honey

1/2 cup vegetable oil or extra-virgin olive oil

Salad components:

1 cup golden raisins

1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted, see cook’s notes

1/4 cup diced sweet pickle

1 teaspoon minced lemon zest

1 pound cooked bay shrimp, see cook’s notes

1 head butter lettuce, washed, separated into leaves

Cook’s notes: To toast almonds place in single layer on rimmed baking sheet and bake 3 to 5 minutes, or until lightly browned. Cool. I like the sweet taste of  tiny bay shrimp (90 to 125 per pound) sourced from Canada.

1. Trim beans (the chef said to “top and tail” the beans) and cut into 2-inch lengths. Fill a large pan or Dutch oven 3/4 full with water; bring to boil on high heat. Add beans to boiling water. Cook until barely tender, 5 to 9 minutes depending on size of beans. Drain and refresh with ice water. Drain. Wrap in clean kitchen towel. Refrigerate until chilled, or up to 2 days in advance.

2. In a large bowl, whisk vinaigrette ingredients together. Add beans and remaining ingredients except lettuce; gently toss. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Place lettuce “cups” on plates or serving platter. Divide salad among leaves and serve.
