Entry Guidelines

As per IATF Resolution No. 2 (s. 2022) on the ENTRY, QUARANTINE and TESTING Requirements of inbound travelers to the Philippines

A. FULLY VACCINATED (Filipino and Foreign Travelers)

- No pre-departure COVID-19 Test requirement - Must have received the 2nd dose in a 2-dose series or a single dose COVID-19 vaccine more than fourteen (14) days prior to the date and time of departure from the country of origin/port of embarkation.

B. UNVACCINATED or PARTIALLY VACCINATED (Filipino and Foreign Travelers)

1. Travelers 15 years and older shall present a remotely supervised/laboratory-based Rapid Antigen Test administered and certified by a healthcare professional in a healthcare facility, laboratory, clinic, or other similar establishment taken 24 hours prior to the date and time of departure from country of origin/first port of embarkation in a continuous travel to the Philippines, excluding lay-overs; provided that, he/she has not left the airport premises or has not been admitted into another country during such lay-over. 2. Travelers 15 years and older who fail to present a negative pre-departure testing shall be required to undergo a laboratory-based Antigen Test UPON ARRIVAL at the airport. 3. ACCOMPANIED minors below 15 years of age who are NOT VACCINATED for any reason whatsoever shall follow the quarantine protocols of their parent/s or an accompanying adult/guardian traveling with them. 4. UNACCOMPANIED minors below 15 years of age who are NOT VACCINATED for any reason whatsoever shall follow the protocols set forth in Section B (1) and (2) above. NOTE:- Any inbound traveler, whether Filipino or Foreign national, who shall test positive for COVID-19 through rapid antigen test shall be subjected to the latest prevailing quarantine and isolation protocols of the DOH.

Traveling to Manila Soon? Here are the Travel Requirements

The world is slowly recovering from the wrath brought by the pandemic a few years ago. With borders closed, our travel goals were also put to a halt. But thankfully, we’ve managed to book flights and travel to countries with eased restrictions, little by little. Now that we’re almost free to travel again, we still have to follow the health and safety protocols of the country you’re headed to. And if you’re traveling to Manila on your next flight, here are the travel requirements you must prepare!

First things first. Who’s allowed to travel?

Both Foreign travelers (see the list below) and Philippine Passport Holders can travel to the Philippines. 

Do you need to undergo RT-PCR tests to travel to the Philippines?

For adults aged 18 years old and above, there’s no need to undergo RT-PCR testing. Just provide proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination and at least one booster shot. 

Minors 12 to 17 years old also need to provide proof of complete COVID-19 vaccination. No need for booster shots.

Children ages 11 and below do not need to show complete COVID-19 vaccination, but their parents or guardians should be fully vaccinated.

How about unvaccinated or partially vaccinated tourists? Are they allowed to travel to the Philippines?

Yes, but you’ll need to go to a facility-based quarantine. You’ll need to wait for the RT-PCR test results on the fifth day from your arrival date. In addition to that, you need to undergo strict home quarantine until the 14th day from the date of arrival. Submit the negative RT-PCR test result taken within 48 hours or a negative rapid antigen test administered by a DOH-accredited facility.

What should we bring on our trip to the Philippines?

Bring your COVID-19 vaccination card or other proofs of vaccination such as: 

• World Health Organization (WHO) International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis
• National or state digital certificate of the country accepting VaxCertPH under a reciprocal arrangement
• Other proof of vaccination permitted by the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF). 
• Valid passport of at least six months on the date of arrival to the Philippines.
• If applicable, valid tickets for the return journey to the port of origin or next port of destination. 
• One Health Pass QR code

How do we get a One Health Pass QR Code?

Step 1: Log on to https://www.onehealthpass.com.ph .

Step 2:   Tap on e-HDC.

Step 3: Fill out the online form. Note: you can only register within 72 hours before your departure. 

Step 4: Once you’ve accomplished the form, click Submit.

Step 5: Your QR code will appear. You may take a screenshot or print it for your copy.

How do we know the list of quarantine facilities approved by the Bureau of Quarantine or the Department of Health?

An updated list is being uploaded on the BOQ’s website .

Manila Travel Requirements 2022: Tourism Protocols for Tourists and Important Reminders  

• All  arriving passengers must register to  One Health Pass portal  within 48 hours prior to departure. For a step-by-step guide, go to  One Health Pass Registration Tutorial .
• Childre n below 12 years old who are unvaccinated shall follow the quarantine protocols of the parent/s.   Children 12 years to 17 years old shall follow the classification and procedures based on their vaccination status. Parent/s shall accompany the minor during their facility-based quarantine.   
• Travel insurance as an entry requirement for foreign nationals is no longer required but is highly encouraged.
• Pre-departure COVID-19 Tests (RT-PCR and/or Antigen) Mandatory Rapid Antigen tests should be administered and certified by a healthcare professional and can be remotely supervised, done in a healthcare facility, laboratory, clinic, pharmacy, or other similar establishments. 
• Fully vaccinated travelers must possess and present any of the following proofs of vaccination:   
• World Health Organization International Certificate of Vaccination and Prophylaxis   
• VaxCertPH    
• National or state manual/digital vaccination certificate of the country/foreign government ;   or
• Other proofs of vaccination permitted by the IATF   
• A traveler shall be deemed fully vaccinated only if he/she is fully compliant with the following requisites:   
• They received 2nd dose series or single dose vaccine for more than 14 days before departure from the country of origin  
• The vaccine is included in any of the following:   
• Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) List or Compassionate Special Permit (CSP) issued by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration ;  or   
• Emergency Use Listing of the World Health Organization

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has heavily affected the tourism industry. Leisure tourism has opened up in the Philippines, but travel restrictions have been put in place to control the further spread of the virus.

For those who want to travel to the re-opened destinations and top tourist spots in the Philippines , we’ve collected the information you need to plan your vacation in the new normal. Read on to find out which Philippine destinations are open for leisure travel, what their travel requirements are, and other restrictions and guidelines imposed by the national and local government units.

International travelers:    Yes, the Philippines is open to all international tourists. Foreigners from visa-required countries will not need an exemption document to enter the country but will still need to follow the immigration rules set by the government.

All inbound travelers will also be required to register via the eTravel Portal, which replaces the One Health Pass requirement. Travelers may register within 72 hours from their arrival in the Philippines or upon arrival. The pre-registration form may be accessed at etravel.gov.ph . For travelers who were not able to pre-register, there will be special lanes set up for arriving passengers to comply with the eTravel registration.

Domestic travelers: Yes (to re-opened destinations only and with restrictions)

Traveling within the Philippines is allowed for tourists but is limited to select destinations and with restrictions.

Yes, the Philippines is open to international tourists. Foreigners from visa-required countries will still need to follow the immigration and visa procedures set by the government.

All travelers from outside the Philippines are required to register via the eTravel Portal. This replaces the One Health Pass requirement. Travelers may access the registration form at  etravel.gov.ph . The form can be filled out within 72 hours from arrival in the Philippines. For travelers who were not able to pre-register, there will be special lanes set up for arriving passengers to comply with the eTravel registration.

Foreigners are allowed to enter the Philippines. All foreigners are also required to register with the eTravel Portal, which replaces the One Health Pass requirement. The registration form may be accessed at etravel.gov.ph . Travelers can pre-register within 72 hours from their arrival in the Philippines or comply upon arrival. For travelers who were not able to pre-register, there will be special lanes set up for arriving passengers to comply with the eTravel registration.

In terms of health, the national government and the local government units have safety guidelines in place to lessen the spread of COVID-19. These include social distancing and the requirement of a negative COVID-19 test result and/or a vaccination card or certificate when crossing local borders. Following these rules will reduce your chances of contracting the disease. 

Mask-wearing and the presentation of proof of full COVID-19 vaccination are no longer mandatory in tourist spots. For your own safety, it is still encouraged to wear a mask in crowded places.

Tourist spots are generally safe, but it’s always best to be alert, make sure all your belongings are secure, and be cautious when interacting with strangers.

Yes, because the United States of America is one of the non-visa required countries . But note that like all foreign visitors, US citizens must follow the other requirements set by the government.

Below are the following requirements for foreigners traveling to the Philippines:

Foreign nationals of non-visa required countries 

Registration via etravel.gov.ph . This must be filled out within 72 hours from their arrival or travelers can comply upon arrival at the special lanes for eTravel registration.

A ticket back to the port of origin or the next port of destination outside the Philippines scheduled within 30 from arrival. An Entry Exemption Document (EED) must be secured for those staying beyond 30 days.

Must come from a non-visa required country under EO 408

Those traveling with their Filipino spouses and parents need to provide proof of filiation

Foreign nationals with valid and existing visas

Valid visa and/or ACR I-Card

A ticket back to the port of origin or the next port of destination outside the Philippines scheduled within the allowed maximum stay in the Philippines.

Proof of vaccination is not required to enter the Philippines, but it may be required when crossing local borders. An International Certificate of Vaccination (ICV) is accepted as proof of a traveler’s fully vaccinated status, but other documents may also be accepted in its place. These include a VaxCertPH digital vaccination certificate or a national/state digital certificate of the foreign government where they were vaccinated, which has accepted VaxCertPH under a reciprocal arrangement.

How to get an ICV

ICVs are issued by the country where you got the vaccine. If you got your vaccines in the Philippines, you can get your ICV by booking an appointment via icv.boq.ph . It costs PHP300, and a PHP70 convenience fee will also be charged. Alternatively, you can apply for a vaccination certificate via vaxcert.doh.gov.ph to prove your fully vaccinated status when entering the Philippines.

After you land in the Philippines, you need to follow the guidelines set by the IATF. 

A quarantine is not required for international travelers entering the Philippines, but a seven-day self-monitoring period is highly encouraged.

Philippine Airlines - The flag carrier currently has flights from Australia, Canada (including Vancouver (YVR) to Manila), Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, Vietnam, and the USA, including Los Angeles (LAX) to Manila, San Francisco (SFO) to Manila, Hawaii (HNL) to Manila, and New York (JFK) to Manila routes.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) - The airline has flights from Japan.

AirAsia - The airline has flights from China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Aseana Airlines -The airline has flights from South Korea.

Cebu Pacific - The airline has flights from Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, and United Arab Emirates.

China Airlines - The airline has flights from Taiwan.

Emirates -  The airline has flights from the United Arab Emirates.

Etihad Airways - The airline has flights from the United Arab Emirates.

Japan Airlines - The airline has flights from Japan and the USA.

JetStar - The airline has flights from Singapore.

Korean Air - The airline has flights from South Korea and the USA.

Malaysia Airlines - The airline has flights from Malaysia.

Which Philippine destinations don't have an RT-PCR test requirement for fully vaccinated travelers?

Yes, fully vaccinated travel is available in the Philippines, but not for all destinations. Several destinations in the Philippines have opened to fully vaccinated tourists, exempting them from the requirement of obtaining a negative RT-PCR or rapid COVID test for travel.

Yes. Some destinations in the Philippines only require travelers to present a government-issued ID to enter, but others still have a negative RT-PCR test or antigen test result as part of the requirements before you can board a domestic flight in the Philippines. Some destinations also require a mandatory quarantine for travelers, as well as a negative test result after a number of days in the destination.

Bohol Island travel requirements for leisure travelers:

Fully vaccinated individuals* are exempted from presenting a negative COVID-19 test result. They should instead present a Vaccination Certificate generated from vaxcert.doh.gov.ph . On October 30, it was announced that the province will also be temporarily accepting vaccination cards in lieu of the vaccination certificate. It will continue to do so until the DOH website ( vaxcert.doh.gov.ph ) is fully operational. 

For unvaccinated and partially vaccinated, a negative RT-PCR or saliva RT-PCR test result taken 3 days prior to travel. Children aged 11 and below are exempted from this requirement.

Asymptomatic individuals are exempted from presenting proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result.

• For unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals, a negative antigen test result taken within 48 hours before arrival is required. Travelers arriving via the province’s seaports and airport can also avail of the free antigen test upon arrival at the province.

Negros Oriental is located in the Central Visayas region. Apart from its capital, the city of Dumaguete, the province is also known for Apo Island, a protected marine reserve that has become a popular diving and snorkeling spot.

Fully vaccinated individuals* are exempted from presenting a negative COVID-19 test result. Instead, a vaccination card or certificate showing the traveler’s fully vaccinated status is needed.

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals need to present a negative RT-PCR test result valid within 24 hours prior to their departure.

All minors must be accompanied by fully vaccinated adults. Children aged 12 to 17 years old must also be fully vaccinated, while children aged 5 to 11 must at least have had their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccination.

Visit cleancamiguinqr.com , fill out the Health Declaration Form, and upload the other requirements. You will be given an ID with a QR code that you need to print out.

Cotabato City

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers must present a negative antigen test result taken 72 hours from their arrival.

Minors are exempted from presenting a negative COVID-19 test result if they are traveling with a parent or guardian who is fully vaccinated.

The province of Sultan Kudarat is located in the southwestern portion of Mindanao. It is known as one of the top producers of coffee in the Philippines and for its many caves that you can explore.

Fully vaccinated* individuals are allowed to enter Sultan Kudarat province. They must present a vaccination card or certificate that proves their fully vaccinated status.

Surigao del Sur is home to many natural attractions including the Enchanted River and the Britania Group of Islands. You can also visit religious spots like San Agustin Parish Church and San Nicholas de Tolentino Cathedral.

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers must present a negative RT-PCR test result taken within 48 hours from arrival. 

Tawi-Tawi is home to the longest sandbar in the Philippines, located in Panampangan Island. Tourists should also check out Bud Bongao Peak and the Sama Dilaut and Tausug Stilt Houses in Sitangkai.

Tawi-Tawi Province travel requirements for leisure travelers:

Fully vaccinated* individuals are exempted from presenting a negative COVID-19 test result. They must instead present their vaccination card that shows their fully vaccinated status.

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers must present a negative RT-PCR test result taken within 72 hours of their arrival in the province. They must also undergo 10 days of quarantine, and partially vaccinated adults must complete their second dose in Tawi-Tawi. 

Children below 12 years old are exempted from the testing requirement provided they are traveling with a fully vaccinated parent or guardian.

Known as the City of Flowers, Zamboanga City is host to what is arguably one of the biggest Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May, a flower festival) celebrations and the colorful Regatta de Zamboanga vinta race in the Philippines.

Fully vaccinated* individuals need to present their vaccination card that shows their vaccination status. 

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers need to present a negative RT-PCR test result taken 5 days before arrival or a negative antigen test result taken within 24 hours prior to arrival.

Unvaccinated and partially vaccinated travelers must present a negative antigen or  RT-PCR test or result.

COVID Manila Travel Requirements per Philippine Airlines Advisory

Metro manila covid-19 health and travel requirements.

Intrazonal and Interzonal movement shall be allowed. However, reasonable restrictions may be imposed by the LGUs, which should not be stricter as those prescribed under higher alert levels and subject to the oversight, monitoring, and evaluation of their respective RIATF.

Manila Travel Requirements for all Inbound and Outbound Passengers

• Vaccination Card or DOH-issued Vaccination Certificate 
• Valid government ID.  

Exemptions 

• Medical certificate  (with name, signature and contact details of the physician) 
• Barangay Health Pass  or other proof to support and justify such travel

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling was heavily restricted to limit the number of people entering and exiting the country to prevent the spread of the disease. Now that restrictions have been lifted in certain areas, foreigners and local citizens have more freedom to move through the country. 

However, for border control and health and safety reasons, travelers still need to obtain requirements for a travel pass to the province they’re planning to visit. For a complete list of the documents, read more below.

A travel pass or S-PASS Travel Coordination Permit (TCP) is a type of traveling document that authorizes an individual to enter a specific province or city. The platform was developed by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – Region VI as a way for domestic travelers to check for current travel policies and requirements in specific provinces. 

The requirements for a travel pass going to the province include registering on the S-PASS website by:

• Entering their mobile number
• Creating a password
• Filling in personal information

Once that’s done, they can log into their account and apply for a travel permit by filling in an application form for their personal details, location, destination, date of arrival, and departure. They’ll also need to upload a photo of a valid ID and RT-PCR Test Result.

As of 2023, travelers are no longer required to register for an S-PASS but they may still need to acquire other requirements for a travel pass to the province of their choosing.

As the capital city of the Philippines, it’s no surprise that Manila is the epicenter for job opportunities. Considering the COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, it’s no wonder that locals are traveling from the provinces to the bustling metropolitan to try their hand at searching for job opportunities.

But considering it’s also a hub for culture, nightlife, and shopping, foreigners are also drawn to the city. To travel to the metropolis, local and international travelers don’t need to obtain any requirements for a travel pass going to Manila from the province. They’ll only need to present their valid ID and travel itinerary or boarding pass to travel to the city.

As of April 2023, travelers are free to enter the Philippines without restrictions as long as they have the following:

• Registration via the eTravel System 72 hours before arrival
• Passport that’s valid at least six months upon arrival
• Visa (if applicable)
• Return ticket to their country or port of origin or next destination

Once they’re cleared through immigration, they don’t need to obtain any latest requirements for a travel pass going to the province. As long as they keep the above documents safe, they’re free to travel around the country.

The eTravel System is a digital collection platform for travelers entering and leaving the Philippines. It facilitates border control, health surveillance, and economic data analysis in the country. It also eliminates the need for international passengers to fill up arrival and departure cards, making it easier for immigration officers to clear them.

According to the latest regulations, eTravel is still required for traveling to and from the Philippines. Individuals who need to register or update their profiles in the eTravel system at least 72 hours before entering the country include:

• Arriving Filipino and foreign travelers
• Arriving Filipino and foreign flight crew members
• Departing Filipino travelers

Note that the eTravel isn’t part of the requirements for a travel pass to the province. It’s only for passengers that are traveling internationally.

Registration to the eTravel system is completely free of charge. Passengers only need to go to  their website through a computer, smartphone, or tablet. Beware of fake or scam entities that ask for payment for registering or updating an account.

For Filipinos or foreign nationals departing the Philippines, the only requirements they’ll need to present upon leaving the country are the following:

• Passport valid for at least six months
• Boarding pass
• Outbound or roundtrip ticket to their point of origin or next destination

In previous years, the requirements for traveling to provinces around the Philippines were extensive due to the pandemic protocols. Travel passes were required to ensure citizens entering the provinces were negative for coronavirus to prevent the further spread of the virus.

Fortunately, now that travel restrictions are lifted, local and international travelers no longer need to obtain various requirements to travel throughout the country. For locals, they only need a valid ID and boarding pass to get to their destination. While foreigners will need their passport, outbound ticket, visa, and registration in the eTravel system to enter and exit the Philippines.

New LGU Travel Guidelines – March 2021

With the recent surge of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines, many local government units (LGUs) have revised their entry protocols with stricter border control. We’ve made it easier for you to know the latest travel requirements for some of the LGUs that have already announced their new guidelines.

These updates are from official LGU pages and are valid as of writing. We also embedded the source so you may get the full details of the guidelines. This post will be updated from time to time to add more information from other LGUs.

Albay Travel Requirements

Last night, Albay Governor Al Francis Bichara announed a new entry restriction in the province of Albay. Here’s the highlights of the new entry protocol:

• Entry of persons/vehicles to the Province of Albay by land and sea shall be restricted effective 12 o’clock midnight of March 19, 2021 until lifted, except to vehicles carrying and/or transporting basic and essential goods such as food, medicine, water, gasoline and other petroleum products, agricultural products and implements such as fertilizers, feeds and the like; power/telecommunication equipment and supplies; construction materials and aggregates
• Only those with negative results shall be allowed entry to the province going to his/her LGU of destination.
• Those with positive results shall be directly transported to the isolation unit of the province and/or LGU of destination for purposes of administering proper health/medical procedure such as but not limited to Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR).

Baguio City Travel Requirements

Starting today, 19 March 2021, Baguio has reimplemented its testing protocols for incoming travelers. You must have a negative result in order to get in. Both RT-PCR and antigen tests are accepted. You may get tested in advance or at the border. Here’s the highlights of the new Baguio entry protocol:

• Non-resident Private Sector Authorized Persons Outside of Residence (APORs) on Official Travel;
• Non-Resident Travelers on personal, leisure, or non-work-related travel purposes;
• Returning Baguio Residents

Boracay Travel Requirements

Entry protocol to Boracay remains the same. The only update so far is it is now accepting saliva test as an alternative to the RT-PCR test.

Davao City Travel Requirements

Davao City reimplements its test before travel requirememt for incoming passengers at Davao International Airport. Passengers must present a negative result of their RT-PCR or Saliva test done by Philippine Red Cross. The test must be taken within 72 hours.

Pampanga Travel Requirements

Pampanga implements strict border control and calls its citizens to comply with health and safety protocols. Starting 20 March to 5 April 2021, only those who are 18-60 years are allowed to go out for essential services. The curfew will be from 10:00 pm to 5:00 am.

• A negative RT-PCR test result will be required for non-citizens (except APORs) when going to the province.

Tagaytay City Travel Requirements

• Curfew from 10:00 pm to 4:00 am
• Only people from 15-65 years old are allowed to go out
• Airbnbs and similar businesses without DOT accreditation are NOT allowed to operate

Mindanao island

Extremists have been active in the southern Philippines for several years.

Although local authorities have demobilized some of violent extremist groups in the recent years, there's still a risk of terrorist attacks and kidnappings, especially in the following regions:

• Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao
• Zamboanga Peninsula
• Sulu archipelago

Bombs causing deaths, injuries, and property destruction have exploded in public areas of major centres, including the cities of:

• General Santos

Clashes may occur between insurgent groups and security forces.

There's a risk of being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The Government of Canada's ability to provide consular assistance is limited if you get stranded in this area.

If you chose to travel in the southern Philippines despite this advisory:

• remain indoors as much as possible
• be aware of your surroundings at all times
• avoid crowded places
• always travel with identification
• expect an increased security presence in public areas, especially around malls and transportation hubs
• stop at security checkpoints
• monitor local media
• follow the advice and instructions of local authorities

There is a threat of terrorism in the southern Philippines.

In recent years, the Filippino government has intensified its fight against terrorists. Counterterrorism operations diminished the capacity of terrorist groups to operate in the Philippines. However, militants remain in the country even if attacks are less common.

Terrorist have carried out attacks, including in major cities and places visited by foreigners. Attacks are far more frequent in Western Mindanao, where government forces and rebel groups clash.

Further attacks may not be ruled out. Targets could include:

• government buildings, including military and police installations
• places of worship
• airports and other transportation hubs and networks
• public areas such as tourist destinations, restaurants, bars, coffee shops, shopping centres, markets, hotels and other sites frequented by foreigners

Always be aware of your surroundings when in public places.

Be particularly vigilant during the following:

• sporting events
• religious holidays
• public celebrations
• major political events, such as elections

Terrorists have used such occasions to mount attacks.

There is a threat of kidnapping across the country, including in Metro Manila. In coastal areas, criminals target individuals on private boats, in marinas and resorts. They have also kidnapped cargo vessel crews.

Kidnappings are usually for ransom, targeting both local and foreign nationals perceived to have money. Criminals have killed some victims.

While in the Philippines:

• maintain a high level of vigilance and personal security awareness at all times
• stay in reputable accommodation with adequate security measures
• report any suspicious behaviour to security forces
• if you are abducted, comply with the kidnappers' demands and do not resist

Crime remains a serious concern throughout the country.

Violent crime, such as armed robbery, sexual assault, and murder, occur regularly. Gangs are active, including in Metro Manila.

The possession of guns and other weapons is common and poorly regulated. Arms trafficking is a significant problem throughout the country and criminals have attacked foreigners, even in wealthy neighborhoods.

• Be aware of your surroundings at all times
• Avoid showing signs of affluence
• If threatened by robbers, don't resist

Petty crime

Petty crime, such as pickpocketing, swarming and bag snatching, occurs, especially in urban areas.

• Ensure that your belongings, including your passport and other travel documents, are secure at all times
• Be careful in crowded shopping malls and other public places
• Avoid carrying large sums of money
• Keep valuables in safe place
• Keep backpacks and bags away from traffic, as motorcyclists may grab them from pedestrians, sometimes causing injury
• Beware of friendly strangers offering to take you around town or on an excursion

Spiked food and drinks

Some criminals have drugged and robbed tourists travelling alone after an invitation to visit a tourist attraction.

Snacks, beverages, gum and cigarettes may contain drugs that could put you at risk of sexual assault and robbery.

• Be wary of accepting these items from new acquaintances
• Never leave food or drinks unattended or in the care of strangers

Credit card and ATM fraud occurs frequently. Illegal electronic devices are sometimes attached to ATM card readers, enabling them to record information such as the user's PIN.

Be cautious when using debit or credit cards:

• pay careful attention when your cards are being handled by others
• use ATMs located in well-lit public areas or inside a bank or business
• avoid using card readers with an irregular or unusual feature
• cover the keypad with one hand when entering your PIN
• check for any unauthorized transactions on your account statements

Overseas fraud

Online financial scams

Internet is frequently used to initiate financial scams. Scammers often use fake profiles to target Westerners and steal from them. Once they succeed in building a virtual relationship, they ask for money for various purposes. This could include business or financial opportunities such as:

• money transfers
• lucrative sales
• gold purchase
• inheritance notices
• bank overpayments

If you intend to do business in the Philippines:

• ensure that any business opportunity is legitimate before leaving
• don't travel to the Philippines with the intention to obtain restitution after losing money to a fraud

Internet romance

Internet romance is also common. Victims of this type of scams have lost thousands of dollars. Before travelling to the Philippines to visit someone you met online:

• keep in mind that you may be the victim of a scam
• inform yourself about the country's customs and laws on conjugal relations and marriage
• be sure to retain possession of your return plane ticket, money, and passport

Child abuse

Locals with children may befriend single male tourists and then accuse them of child abuse to extort money from them.

Report any incident of crime or scams to local police before you leave the country.

Women's safety

Women travelling alone may be subject to some forms of harassment and verbal abuse.

Demonstrations

Demonstrations take place, including in Manila. Clashes may occur between security forces and demonstrators, especially in Mindanao and remote areas of northern Luzon.

Filipino law prohibits political activities by foreigners. Participating in demonstrations may result in being detained or deported.

Even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent at any time. They can also lead to disruptions to traffic and public transportation.

• Avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place
• Follow the instructions of local authorities
• Monitor local media for information on ongoing demonstrations

Mass gatherings (large-scale events)

Water activities

Coastal waters can be dangerous. Riptides are common. Several drownings occur each year.

Most of the time, lifeguards are not present to supervise swimmers. Many beaches don't offer warnings of dangerous conditions.

Water pollution is also a concern.

• Seek local advice before swimming
• Avoid swimming if red flags are flown

Scuba diving

Diving schools and rescue services may not adhere to Canadian standards.

• Use only reputable dive companies
• Make sure the company offers proper safety equipment

Water safety abroad

Road safety

Road conditions.

Road conditions vary throughout the country. Some roads, including major highways, are poorly maintained. Traffic is very heavy, especially in Metro Manila.

Driving conditions may quickly become hazardous. During the rainy season, metro centres often become impassable due to flash floods.

Driving habits

Many drivers don't respect traffic laws. They are reckless. They often drive at excessive speeds or way below the speed limit on highways. Accidents causing fatalities are common. Pedestrians don't have priority over cars.

Even minor road incidents can escalate quickly and lead to violent assaults.

If driving in the Philippines:

• avoid travel outside urban areas or tourist centres after dark
• stay on national highways and paved roads
• avoid any confrontation

Most people travel using mopeds. Fatal scooter accidents involving tourists are common.

If renting a scooter or moped:

• be vigilant while driving
• avoid renting from operators who don't provide a helmet with the rental
• avoid driving on roads in disrepair

Public transportation

The safety and reliability of public transportation are poor.

Minibuses, known as jeepneys, and large buses are often old, poorly maintained, and overcrowded. Pickpocketing and armed robberies are frequent, especially in large cities such as Manila and Cebu.

Some interurban buses have also been involved in fatal accidents.

Motorcycles

Motorcycle transportation is prevalent throughout the country, whether by habal-habal or tricycle.

Habal-habal are motorcycles with extensions, which can carry several passengers at a time. They are illegal and dangerous.

Tricycles are rather a safe option as they don't drive very fast. However, vehicles may be in poor condition. They aren't metered and can be hailed anywhere.

• Don't use habal-habal
• Avoid using tricycles at night on country roads
• Agree on a fare with the tricycle driver before departing to avoid scams

Although most taxi services are safe and reliable, there have been extortion incidents from taxi drivers.

To minimize your risks:

• avoid hailing a taxi on the street
• only enter metered taxis from a reliable company and insist the meter be turned on
• prefer hotel transportation, official airport taxis, or a ridesharing app
• never share taxis with strangers
• ask for the windows being rolled up and doors locked at all times
• never hand your phone to the driver to allow them to see the map
• record the taxi's licence plate and provide the information to a relative/friend

Ferry accidents occur. Some vessels are poorly maintained and overcrowded. Accidents are more prevalent during the rainy season as storms can develop quickly. As a result, local authorities may suspend ferry services on short notice when a storm signal is raised, even if the weather is clear. You could get stranded at ports for several days.

If travelling by sea:

• use only a reliable company
• don't board vessels that appear overloaded or unseaworthy
• make sure you have access to a life jacket
• plan for extra time, especially during the rainy season

Pirate attacks and armed robbery targeting ships occur in coastal waters. You may face an elevated threat of kidnapping in waters:

• around Mindanao
• in the Sulu Sea
• in the Celebes Sea
• south of Palawan Island
• south of Negros Island
• around Siquijor Island

Every country or territory decides who can enter or exit through its borders. The Government of Canada cannot intervene on your behalf if you do not meet your destination’s entry or exit requirements.

Entry requirements vary depending on the type of passport you use for travel.

Before you travel, check with your transportation company about passport requirements. Its rules on passport validity may be more stringent than the country’s entry rules.

Regular Canadian passport

Your passport must be valid at least 6 months beyond the date you expect to leave the Philippines.

Passport with “X” gender identifier

While the Government of Canada issues passports with an “X” gender identifier, it cannot guarantee your entry or transit through other countries. You might face entry restrictions in countries that do not recognize the “X” gender identifier. Before you leave, check with the closest foreign representative for your destination.

If you need to extend your stay above the 30-day visa-free period, you must get the proper authorization from local authorities before this period ends.

The visa that immigration officials issue upon your arrival in the Philippines takes precedence over any visa you may have obtained from a Philippine embassy or consulate abroad.

If you're leaving the Philippines using a temporary passport issued inside the country, consult the Philippine Bureau of Immigration to obtain the required exit stamps.

Registration

All travelers must register their entry and exit from the country in the Philippine's eTravel System within 72 hours before travel.

Foreign nationals staying in the Philippines for longer than 59 days must register with the local authorities.

You must present yourself to a Bureau of Immigration office to register your biometrics, such as fingerprinting, and obtain a special security registration number.

Customs officials may ask you to show them a return or onward ticket.

Boracay Island

Local authorities are restricting visitors to Boracay Island.

You may need proof of accommodation in an accredited hotel to be allowed entry.

Foreign nationals travelling on a visa issued by one of the following authorities must present a travel pass to leave the country:

• the Department of Justice
• the Board of Investments
• the Philippine Retirement Authority
• the Philippine Economic Zone Authority
• the economic zones

If you've been in the country for 6 months or more, you must obtain an emigration clearance certificate (ECC), also known as an exit clearance, and pay applicable fees at least 72 hours before your expected departure.

This also applies to children born in the Philippines who are leaving the country for the first time on a foreign passport.

Routine vaccines

Be sure that your  routine vaccinations , as per your province or territory , are up-to-date before travelling, regardless of your destination.

Some of these vaccinations include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, varicella (chickenpox), influenza and others.

Pre-travel vaccines and medications

You may be at risk for preventable diseases while travelling in this destination. Talk to a travel health professional about which medications or vaccines may be right for you, based on your destination and itinerary. 

There is a risk of hepatitis A in this destination. It is a disease of the liver. People can get hepatitis A if they ingest contaminated food or water, eat foods prepared by an infectious person, or if they have close physical contact (such as oral-anal sex) with an infectious person, although casual contact among people does not spread the virus.

Practise  safe food and water precautions and wash your hands often. Vaccination is recommended for all travellers to areas where hepatitis A is present.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease. It can spread quickly from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

Anyone who is not protected against measles is at risk of being infected with it when travelling internationally.

Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are fully protected against measles.

Japanese encephalitis is a viral infection that can cause swelling of the brain.  It is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Risk is very low for most travellers. Travellers at relatively higher risk may want to consider vaccination for JE prior to travelling.

Travellers are at higher risk if they will be:

• travelling long term (e.g. more than 30 days)
• making multiple trips to endemic areas
• staying for extended periods in rural areas
• visiting an area suffering a JE outbreak
• engaging in activities involving high contact with mosquitos (e.g., entomologists)

  Hepatitis B is a risk in every destination. It is a viral liver disease that is easily transmitted from one person to another through exposure to blood and body fluids containing the hepatitis B virus.  Travellers who may be exposed to blood or other bodily fluids (e.g., through sexual contact, medical treatment, sharing needles, tattooing, acupuncture or occupational exposure) are at higher risk of getting hepatitis B.

Hepatitis B vaccination is recommended for all travellers. Prevent hepatitis B infection by practicing safe sex, only using new and sterile drug equipment, and only getting tattoos and piercings in settings that follow public health regulations and standards.

Malaria  is a serious and sometimes fatal disease that is caused by parasites spread through the bites of mosquitoes.   There is a risk of malaria in certain areas and/or during a certain time of year in this destination. 

Antimalarial medication may be recommended depending on your itinerary and the time of year you are travelling. Consult a health care professional or visit a travel health clinic before travelling to discuss your options. It is recommended to do this 6 weeks before travel, however, it is still a good idea any time before leaving.    Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times:  • Cover your skin and use an approved insect repellent on uncovered skin.  • Exclude mosquitoes from your living area with screening and/or closed, well-sealed doors and windows. • Use insecticide-treated bed nets if mosquitoes cannot be excluded from your living area.  • Wear permethrin-treated clothing.    If you develop symptoms similar to malaria when you are travelling or up to a year after you return home, see a health care professional immediately. Tell them where you have been travelling or living. 

 The best way to protect yourself from seasonal influenza (flu) is to get vaccinated every year. Get the flu shot at least 2 weeks before travelling.  

 The flu occurs worldwide. 

•  In the Northern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs from November to   April.
•  In the Southern Hemisphere, the flu season usually runs between April and   October.
•  In the tropics, there is flu activity year round. 

The flu vaccine available in one hemisphere may only offer partial protection against the flu in the other hemisphere.

The flu virus spreads from person to person when they cough or sneeze or by touching objects and surfaces that have been contaminated with the virus. Clean your hands often and wear a mask if you have a fever or respiratory symptoms.

Yellow fever   is a disease caused by a flavivirus from the bite of an infected mosquito.

Travellers get vaccinated either because it is required to enter a country or because it is recommended for their protection.

• There is no risk of yellow fever in this country.

About Yellow Fever

Yellow Fever Vaccination Centres in Canada * It is important to note that  country entry requirements  may not reflect your risk of yellow fever at your destination. It is recommended that you contact the nearest  diplomatic or consular office  of the destination(s) you will be visiting to verify any additional entry requirements.

In this destination, rabies is carried by dogs and some wildlife, including bats. Rabies is a deadly disease that spreads to humans primarily through bites or scratches from an infected animal. While travelling, take precautions , including keeping your distance from animals (including free-roaming dogs), and closely supervising children.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal while travelling, immediately wash the wound with soap and clean water and see a health care professional. Rabies treatment is often available in this destination. 

Before travel, discuss rabies vaccination with a health care professional. It may be recommended for travellers who are at high risk of exposure (e.g., occupational risk such as veterinarians and wildlife workers, children, adventure travellers and spelunkers, and others in close contact with animals). 

Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious viral disease. It can spread from person to person by direct contact and through droplets in the air.

It is recommended that all eligible travellers complete a COVID-19 vaccine series along with any additional recommended doses in Canada before travelling. Evidence shows that vaccines are very effective at preventing severe illness, hospitalization and death from COVID-19. While vaccination provides better protection against serious illness, you may still be at risk of infection from the virus that causes COVID-19. Anyone who has not completed a vaccine series is at increased risk of being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 and is at greater risk for severe disease when travelling internationally.

Before travelling, verify your destination’s COVID-19 vaccination entry/exit requirements. Regardless of where you are going, talk to a health care professional before travelling to make sure you are adequately protected against COVID-19.

Safe food and water precautions

Many illnesses can be caused by eating food or drinking beverages contaminated by bacteria, parasites, toxins, or viruses, or by swimming or bathing in contaminated water.

• Avoid getting water into your eyes, mouth or nose when swimming or participating in activities in freshwater (streams, canals, lakes), particularly after flooding or heavy rain. Water may look clean but could still be polluted or contaminated.
• Avoid inhaling or swallowing water while bathing, showering, or swimming in pools or hot tubs. 

Cholera is a risk in parts of this country. Most travellers are at very low risk.

To protect against cholera, all travellers should practise safe food and water precautions .

Travellers at higher risk of getting cholera include those:

• visiting, working or living in areas with limited access to safe food, water and proper sanitation
• visiting areas where outbreaks are occurring

Vaccination may be recommended for high-risk travellers, and should be discussed with a health care professional.

Travellers' diarrhea is the most common illness affecting travellers. It is spread from eating or drinking contaminated food or water.

Risk of developing travellers' diarrhea increases when travelling in regions with poor standards of hygiene and sanitation. Practise safe food and water precautions.

The most important treatment for travellers' diarrhea is rehydration (drinking lots of fluids). Carry oral rehydration salts when travelling.

Typhoid   is a bacterial infection spread by contaminated food or water. Risk is higher among children, travellers going to rural areas, travellers visiting friends and relatives or those travelling for a long period of time.

Travellers visiting regions with a risk of typhoid, especially those exposed to places with poor sanitation, should speak to a health care professional about vaccination.  

There is a risk of schistosomiasis in this destination. Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by tiny worms (blood flukes) which can be found in freshwater (lakes, rivers, ponds, and wetlands). The worms can break the skin, and their eggs can cause stomach pain, diarrhea, flu-like symptoms, or urinary problems. Schistosomiasis mostly affects underdeveloped and r ural communities, particularly agricultural and fishing communities.

Most travellers are at low risk. Travellers should avoid contact with untreated freshwater such as lakes, rivers, and ponds (e.g., swimming, bathing, wading, ingesting). There is no vaccine or medication available to prevent infection.

Insect bite prevention

Many diseases are spread by the bites of infected insects such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas or flies. When travelling to areas where infected insects may be present:

• Use insect repellent (bug spray) on exposed skin
• Cover up with light-coloured, loose clothes made of tightly woven materials such as nylon or polyester
• Minimize exposure to insects
• Use mosquito netting when sleeping outdoors or in buildings that are not fully enclosed

Find out what types of insects are present where you’re travelling, when they’re most active, and the symptoms of the diseases they spread.

• In this country,   dengue  is a risk to travellers. It is a viral disease spread to humans by mosquito bites.
• Dengue can cause flu-like symptoms. In some cases, it can lead to severe dengue, which can be fatal.
• The level of risk of dengue changes seasonally, and varies from year to year. The level of risk also varies between regions in a country and can depend on the elevation in the region.
• Mosquitoes carrying dengue typically bite during the daytime, particularly around sunrise and sunset.
• Protect yourself from mosquito bites . There is no vaccine or medication that protects against dengue.

Zika virus is a risk in this country. 

Zika virus is primarily spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. It can also be sexually transmitted. Zika virus can cause serious birth defects.

During your trip:

• Prevent mosquito bites at all times.
• Use condoms correctly or avoid sexual contact, particularly if you are pregnant.

If you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy, you should discuss the potential risks of travelling to this destination with your health care provider. You may choose to avoid or postpone travel.

There is a risk of chikungunya in this country.  The risk may vary between regions of a country.  Chikungunya is a virus spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Chikungunya can cause a viral disease that typically causes fever and pain in the joints. In some cases, the joint pain can be severe and last for months or years.

Protect yourself from mosquito bites at all times. There is no vaccine available for chikungunya.

Animal precautions

Some infections, such as rabies and influenza, can be shared between humans and animals. Certain types of activities may increase your chance of contact with animals, such as travelling in rural or forested areas, camping, hiking, and visiting wet markets (places where live animals are slaughtered and sold) or caves.

Travellers are cautioned to avoid contact with animals, including dogs, livestock (pigs, cows), monkeys, snakes, rodents, birds, and bats, and to avoid eating undercooked wild game.

Closely supervise children, as they are more likely to come in contact with animals.

Person-to-person infections

Stay home if you’re sick and practise proper cough and sneeze etiquette , which includes coughing or sneezing into a tissue or the bend of your arm, not your hand. Reduce your risk of colds, the flu and other illnesses by:

•   washing your hands often
• avoiding or limiting the amount of time spent in closed spaces, crowded places, or at large-scale events (concerts, sporting events, rallies)
• avoiding close physical contact with people who may be showing symptoms of illness 

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) , HIV , and mpox are spread through blood and bodily fluids; use condoms, practise safe sex, and limit your number of sexual partners. Check with your local public health authority pre-travel to determine your eligibility for mpox vaccine.  

Tuberculosis is an infection caused by bacteria and usually affects the lungs.

For most travellers the risk of tuberculosis is low.

Travellers who may be at high risk while travelling in regions with risk of tuberculosis should discuss pre- and post-travel options with a health care professional.

High-risk travellers include those visiting or working in prisons, refugee camps, homeless shelters, or hospitals, or travellers visiting friends and relatives.

Medical services and facilities

Good medical services and facilities are limited in availability, especially outside major urban areas. Public medical clinics often lack basic resources and equipment.

Quality of care varies greatly throughout the country.  Most hospitals will require a down payment of estimated fees at the time of admission. They may also require additional payments during hospitalization. 

Some hospitals require patients to have a full-time caregiver. You may have to hire one if you’re travelling alone.

Emergency services are not widely available. Time response can be slow.

Make sure you get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays.

Travel health and safety

Some medication that can be purchased over-the-counter in Canada is illegal in the Philippines. If you bring some medicines with you, you’re responsible for determining their legality before departing. If you enter the country with drugs locally considered illegal, including prescription drugs, you may be fined or detained.

• Make sure your medicines are legal in the Philippines before departure
• Bring your own medicines, but only in quantities sufficient for the duration of your stay
• Seal and declare a separate quantity of prescription drugs before departing the Philippines if you’re travelling onward to another country
• Always keep your medication in the original container
• Carry a copy of your prescriptions as well as a letter from your physician stating the dosage and your relevant medical condition
• Pack your medicines in your carry-on luggage

Medical tourism

Canadian citizens have died or had serious health complications following cosmetic or other elective surgeries abroad.

Before leaving for medical travel:

• make sure you have done your research
• use reputable health-care providers only

Receiving medical care outside Canada

Air pollution

Air pollution can be severe in several major cities. It may affect people suffering from respiratory ailments.  

During periods of high pollution:

• limit your activities outdoors
• follow the instructions of local authorities

You must abide by local laws.

Penalties for possession, use, trafficking or importation, including through e-commerce, of illegal drugs are severe. Convicted offenders can expect life imprisonment and heavy fines.

Many drugs considered as legal in Canada are illegal in the Philippines. This includes cannabis, regardless of quantity and purpose of use, as well as some over-the-counter medicine and prescription drugs.

• Pack your own luggage and monitor it closely at all times
• Never transport other people's packages, bags or suitcases

Child sex tourism

Penalties for pedophilia are severe. Under Philippine law, a child is defined as a person under 18.

Police may investigate any adult who is with:

• an unrelated child 12 years of age or younger, or 10 years or more his/her junior
• an unrelated child under age 18 inside the room of a house, hotel, or other similar establishments, vehicle, or other secluded location, and is suspected of having the intention to exploit the child sexually

The government prohibits any photography of official buildings or military installations that is intended for publication.

To protect the environment, local authorities restrict access to Boracay Island.

Some activities are also prohibited, including  the consumption of alcohol and tobacco in public places, including White Beach.

If you plan to visit Boracay, make sure you know about the rules and regulations before leaving.

Filipino law prohibits political activities by foreigners.

Attending any protest, demonstration, or political rally as a foreign national may lead to detention and deportation.

Identification

Authorities may request to see your ID at any time.

• Keep a photocopy of your passport in case it's lost or seized
• Keep a digital copy of your ID and travel documents

Dual citizenship

Dual citizenship is legally recognized in the Philippines.

If you are a Canadian citizen, but also a citizen of the Philippines, our ability to offer you consular services may be limited while you're there. You may also be subject to different entry/exit requirements .

Travellers with dual citizenship

Dual citizens must obtain a certificate of recognition from Philippine authorities to ensure the legal recognition of both citizenships.

International Child Abduction

The Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction is an international treaty. It can help parents with the return of children who have been removed to or retained in certain countries in violation of custody rights. It does not apply between Canada and the Philippines.

If your child was wrongfully taken to, or is being held in the Philippines by an abducting parent:

• act as quickly as you can
• consult a lawyer in Canada and in the Philippines to explore all the legal options for the return of your child
• report the situation to the nearest Canadian government office abroad or to the Vulnerable Children’s Consular Unit at Global Affairs Canada by calling the Emergency Watch and Response Centre.

If your child was removed from a country other than Canada, consult a lawyer to determine if The Hague Convention applies.

Be aware that Canadian consular officials cannot interfere in private legal matters or in another country’s judicial affairs.

You can drive in the Philippines with a valid Canadian driver's licence for up to 90 days. After that period, you must apply for a local driving permit.

You should carry an international driving permit.

International Driving Permit

The currency in the Philippines is the peso (PHP).

ATMs are available in larger cities but may be scarce in rural areas. Make sure to have access to cash in local currency if you're travelling outside larger urban areas.

You may enter the Philippines with:

• up to PHP 50,000
• up to US$10,000 or other currency equivalent

You need a written authorization from local authorities for greater amounts.

Climate change

Climate change is affecting the Philippines. Extreme and unusual weather events are becoming more frequent. Monitor local news to stay informed on the current situation.

Typhoons and monsoons

The rainy or monsoon season extends from May to November, but storms can occur throughout the year. The Philippines experiences around 20 typhoons per year, mostly between June and November.

Seasonal flooding can hamper overland travel and reduce the provision of essential services. Roads may become impassable and bridges damaged. Flooding and mudslides are frequent following heavy rains, even in Metro Manila.

If you decide to travel to the Philippines during the rainy season:

• know that you expose yourself to serious safety risks
• be prepared to change your travel plans on short notice, including cutting short or cancelling your trip
• stay informed of the latest regional weather forecasts
• carry emergency contact information for your airline or tour operator

Seismic activity

The Philippines is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire and experiences regular seismic activity.

There are several active and potentially active volcanoes in the Philippines, mainly on Luzon island.

Taal is one of the main active volcanoes in Batangas on Luzon Island. It continuously shows signs of a possible eruption. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology is constantly monitoring the Taal Volcano. Local authorities may raise alert levels and issue evacuation orders on short notice.

Volcanic activity may escalate suddenly. Volcanic ash clouds may cause disruptions to domestic and international flights.

If you are near active volcanoes:

• monitor levels of volcanic activity through the local media
• pay careful attention to all warnings issued
• follow the advice of local authorities, including evacuation orders
• be prepared to modify your travel arrangements or even evacuate the area on short notice

Earthquakes

The Philippines is located in an active seismic zone. Earthquakes occur regularly and strong aftershocks may occur after the initial quake.

Familiarize yourself with earthquake security measures in public and private buildings, including airports.

The Philippines is prone to tsunamis.

A tsunami can occur within minutes of a nearby earthquake. However, the risk of a tsunami can remain for several hours following the first tremor.

If you're staying on the coast, familiarize yourself with the region's evacuation plans in the event of a tsunami warning.

Entry Requirements  

• Travellers can enter regardless of their vaccination status.
• Travellers are required to register and complete the e-Travel online form . ​​​
• Arriving travellers (ALL Nationalities): Not earlier than seventy-two (72) hours from the scheduled time of arrival up to actual arrival; and

Visa Requirements You are advised to contact your local embassy or consulate to advise on whether you need to apply for a visa to enter the Philippines.

Face Mask Policy Guests are not permitted to use the type of mask that is fitted with exhalation/breathing valves. This is in line with CDC, WHO and CAAC 6th Edition Safety Recommendations on Prevention and Control Measures During Flight. Philippines

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in the Philippines set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Embassy of the Philippines in the UK .

To enter the Philippines as a visitor, you must have a ticket for your departure. Most airlines will not carry you if you cannot produce your departure ticket.  

You must also register with the ‘e-travel’ system 72 hours or less prior to your arrival.

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering the Philippines.

Passport validity requirements

Your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

UK passport holders do not need a visa to visit the Philippines for 30 days.

If you overstay your visa-free 30 days without getting an extension , or if you overstay any visa without authority, it is a serious matter. You could face fees and fines, and detention if you cannot pay them, or you could be deported at your own expense.

If you want a visa to live, work, or study in the Philippines, you’ll need to meet the requirements of the Philippine immigration regulations . This includes having certain UK documents (birth certificates, marriage certificates, UK police certificates, school documents) legalised by the Legalisation Office (not by the Philippine Embassy in London).   

Children travelling without their parents

If your non-Filipino children aged 14 or under are travelling without either parent, you must apply for a waiver of exclusion ground for entry into the Philippines .     

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s Philippines guide .

Depending on your circumstances this may include:

• a yellow fever vaccination certificate
• a polio vaccination certificate

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of the Philippines . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking money into the Philippines 

You cannot bring in more than 50,000 Philippine pesos. If you are bringing in foreign currency (cash or cheques) worth more than 10,000 US dollars, you must complete a foreign currency declaration form on arrival.

Exit requirements

If you have stayed in the Philippines for 6 months or more on a tourist visa, you must get an emigration clearance certificate ( ECC ) during the 72 hours before you leave the country.    

If you were in the Philippines on a visa issued by the Department of Justice ( DoJ ), the Board of Investments ( BoI ), the Philippine Retirement Authority ( PRA ) or the Philippine Economic Zone Authority ( PEZA ), you will need a travel pass from the department that issued your visa to leave the Philippines. If you have  an ECC , you do not need a travel pass.

If you’re leaving the country from Cebu Mactan airport you must pay a departure tax of 850 Philippine pesos in local currency or the equivalent in US dollars. There’s no longer a departure tax at Manila airport. This information can change and you should check with local authorities before you travel.

PROVINCIAL BUSES: List of Requirements & Terminals (To and from Metro Manila)

After months of suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, operations of provincial buses to and from Manila have resumed, starting with a number of routes to and from Region III (Central Luzon), Region IV-A (CALABARZON / Southern Tagalog), Region VI (Western Visayas) and Region VIII (Eastern Visayas).

Based on Memorandum Circular 2020-051, public utility buses plying provincial routes with existing and valid Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC) or Application for Extension of Validity and registered with Personal Passenger Insurance Policy will be allowed to operate again. According to the same memo, authorized units shall be issued corresponding QR codes and subject to the guidelines of the respective local government units (LGU) and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) on Emerging Infectious Diseases.

WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?

List of Provincial Bus Requirements

For passengers planning on traveling on one of these buses, the following documents are required:

• Valid ID. This should serve as proof of residency or place of origin, age, company or workplace (if employed), or school (if student).
• Face mask and face shield . Passengers must wear a face mask and face shield in order to be allowed to board.
• Travel authority or Travel pass. Issued by the Philippine National Police (PNP) at the point of origin within 48 hours prior to departure. (To save time, check if there is a PNP desk at or near the terminal of origin.)
• Written consent to undergo COVID-19 testing or quarantine or both, as may be required by the LGU at the destination or point of origin.

In addition, the IATF and the LGU may also require additional documents, which is why it’s important to contact the local government first before traveling to check for changes in the policy.

These documents must be made ready for presentation at the destination.

Travel Guidelines to Follow

These are the rules and guidelines that passengers must follow, according to the Memorandum Circular 2020-051:

• Pre-book tickets at least 48 hours before actual departure. You can book online or at the station. On-the-day or walk-in tickets are not allowed unless for emergency purposes like medical concerns.
• NO travel documents, NO boarding. Prior to boarding at the designated terminals, the dispatcher or conductor must inspect and ensure that all passengers have the required documents.
• NO mask and face shield, NO boarding. Passengers are required to wear face masks and face shields in order to be allowed to board.
• Talking to other passengers is discouraged. Same applies to talking on your mobile phone.
• Body temperature will be checked. Passengers with body temperature of 38 degrees Celcius or higher will not be allowed to board. If you have fever or other symptoms of COVID-19, you will not be allowed into the vehicle.
• Physical distancing must be observed at all times. No standing passengers will be allowed.
• Most trips are considered point-to-point. No pick up or drop off of passengers other than the designated stops shall be allowed during the trip. These apply to buses bound for Region IV-A and III. (I’m still trying to confirm if this applies to Visayas-bound buses too.)
• Take note of the following: vehicle’s plate number or body number, the boarding date and time, and the route.

These are the clauses that directly involve passengers. The memorandum also lists down several rules and guidelines concerning the bus operators and drivers, including the regular cleaning and disinfection of the bus units and the application of penalties or fines for violations.

The 7 Commandments when Riding Provincial Bus

The LTFRB also released a list of “7 commandments”, which is a summarized version of the guidelines above.

• Always wear a mask and a face shield.
• Talking and speaking on the phone is not allowed.
• Eating is prohibited.
• Proper ventilation in PUVs must be maintained.
• Disinfection should be done regularly.
• Passengers with symptoms of COVID-19 are not allowed to ride public transportation.
• Proper physical distancing or the “one-seat apart” rule must always be observed.

List of Operational Provincial Routes

According to the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), here’s the list of modified provincial Public Utility Bus (PUB) routes that will start or have started operations and their corresponding terminal in Metro Manila.

Note that the listed provincial buses will be using either of the following terminals:

• Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITx) – provincial buses bound for Southern Tagalog Regions (Regions IV-A and IV-B) and Bicol (Region V)
• Santa Rosa Integrated Terminal (SRIT) in Laguna – provincial buses bound for Visayas and Mindanao
• Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City – provincial commuter buses bound for Region III (Central Luzon)

This means that if you’re traveling to Visayas or Mindanao, you need to make your way to Santa Rosa first.

• San Fernando – Araneta Center, Cubao, Quezon City
• Dau, Mabalacat – Araneta Center, Cubao (starting October 16)

Manila to Batangas

• Batangas City – PITx

The above routes have been approved by their respective local government units. Several routes to and from Metro Manila and Region III and IVA have also been proposed for approval.

Oriental Mindoro eases travel requirements for fully-vaccinated travellers

CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro – Tourists who wish to travel to Oriental Mindoro won’t need Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) test as a requirement so along as they are fully vaccinated.

The new travel policy is contained in Executive Order No. 30 issued last July 19 by Oriental Mindoro Governor Bonz A. Dolor which in essence, recognizes the vaccination card as an alternative travel requirement to RT-PCR test results for all individuals before their travel and upon their arrival to any ports of entry in the province.

Gov. Dolor said that travellers may attach their vaccination cards in their Travel Confirmation Pass (TCP) applications which in turn will be verified by the City or Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Office or the local health office.

The vaccinated travellers will just undergo health screening procedure at the port of Calapan or in the other five ports of entry of the province.

A travel guide from the provincial government says that an individual who is planning to go to Mindoro is advised to create an account in spass.ph using his or her mobile number and fill-up all the needed information in the registration form.

Once registered, a member-individual may log-in and check the place of destination and click the “Are you travelling” in the menu and answer all the related questions and fill-up the TCP information for verification and approval.

Before proceeding to Batangas port or any port of entry en route to Oriental Mindoro, the S-PASS account shall be indicated with the word “Approved”.

2022 SAGADA TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Over the years, the municipality of Sagada in the Mountain Province has attracted tourists especially on weekends. Travel agencies from Manila started offering inexpensive group tours during weekends that led to overcrowding in top Sagada tourist spots.  But then the pandemic arrived, and Sagada temporarily closed its borders to tourists in order to protect its residents. But, with the closure of Sagada, many residents who work in the tourism industry, such as local guides, café and restaurants owners, homestay owners, and weavers, have lost their livelihood. Late last year, Sagada finally opened its doors to tourists after a long hiatus. And early this year, new rules were imposed. If you are planning to visit Sagada soon, here’s the list of Sagada travel requirements for 2022.

SAGADA TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR TOURISTS

Here’s the latest Sagada travel requirements for 2022. Both vaccinated tourists and partially and unvaccinated tourists can now enter Sagada. Children 11 years old and below are exempted from the following requirements:

SAGADA TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR VACCINATED TOURISTS

1.BOOKED ACCOMMODATION. All travelers must book at least 1 night accommodation from DOT-accredited and LGU-certified establishments. Your accommodation should provide you with an access code that you need to proceed with the online registration. See next requirement below.

Important: Bookings must be made at least 2 days prior to arrival.

  2.UMALI KAYO QR CODE. Sign up at Umali Kayo Registration  –> HERE. Register at least 2 days prior to your travel date. You must present the QR Code / registration confirmation in Umali Kayo registration system. Your code should contain the letters CN, followed by 6 numbers (e.g CN 345678). Each code will accommodate up to 2 persons.  For example, you are 4 in a group, then you need 2 codes.

Important: The registration portal is only open from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily.

3.VACCINATION CARD.  Vaccinated tourists must present a vaccination card showing you are fully vaccinated.

SAGADA TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS FOR UNVACCINATED TOURISTS AND PARTIALLY VACCINATED TOURISTS

1.BOOKED ACCOMMODATION.    You must book at least 1 night accommodation from DOT-accredited and LGU-certified establishments. Your accommodation should provide you with an access code that you need to proceed with the online registration. See next requirement below.

  2.UMALI KAYO QR CODE. Sign up at Umali Kayo Registration. Register at least 2 days prior to your travel date. You must present the QR Code / registration confirmation in Umali Kayo registration system.

3.NEGATIVE RAPID ANTIGEN TEST RESULT. All partially vaccinated and unvaccinated tourists must present a negative Covid test result valid up to 1 day from the date of release.

• Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) may be conducted at the Pegeo Border Control Point in Sagada for ₱600 ($11) per test. Open daily from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM only.
• If you’re taking the Rapid Antigen Test outside Sagada, it must be with an official receipt (OR) from any of the following:

Any medical government office (RHU, City Health Office, MHO, PO)

Any Philippine Hospital.

4.REGISTRATION FEE. After undergoing triage on your arrival in Sagada, all tourists must pay the ₱100 ($2) registration fee at the Tourism Information Office or Tourism Hub in Sagada. You will be provided a tourist kit which includes informative documents that may aid in your travel in Sagada. Also, you will be provided a tourist ID for identification purposes, carry this with you at all times when exploring and visiting Sagada tourist spots. It will serve as your pass to be able to enter sites included in your Sagada itinerary or Sagada tour package.

IMPORTANT: All tourists arriving must present the accomplished Sagada travel requirements stated above, e.g.QR Code, Vaccination Card, Covid 19 Negative Test Result, and booked accommodation confirmation.

All tourists must undergo triage.

Currently, day trips aren’t allowed in Sagada. You must stay for at least 1 night in Sagada.

If you are an APOR traveling to Sagada , please select APOR as your purpose of visit when you register at Umali Kayo website. Don’t forget your travel order. Also, you won’t be allowed to tour.  If you plan tour Sagada while you are there, you have to register as a tourist and comply with the Sagada travel requirements for tourists.

HOW TO GO TO SAGADA

Tourists visiting Sagada by private vehicles and public transportation are now allowed.

  Sagada by Private Vehicle

Below are your Sagada route options, depending on when you are coming from.

1.Manila -> Baguio – >Halsema Highway -> Sagada Route

If you’ll be using this route and will only be passing through Baguio and Benguet, you are required to register HERE .

Travel Reminder:

• Plan your trip accordingly to make sure your arrival in Sagada is around 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM , otherwise, you will not be allowed to enter since the triage and the Tourism Hub that will check the Sagada travel requirements is still closed. You will wait until the next day when the triage is open.
• Sagada travel requirements will be checked at Pegeo border control . Then you will be referred to the Sagada tourism hub after.
• At the Sagada Tourism Hub, you will be provided tourist ID and tourist kit, which you need to wear or carry with you when you enter major Sagada tourist spots. Registration fee is ₱100 ($2).
• All tourists will undergo triage.
• To avoid delays, all tourists entering Sagada are advised to take the Dantay-Sagada Road and Sagada South Road when exiting.

Sagada by Public Transportation

Tourists arriving by private vehicles and public transportation are now allowed in Sagada.

Manila  (Cubao) – Sagada

1.Ride a Coda Bus from Manila to Sagada via Banaue and Bontoc.

Coda Bus terminal is located at Monte de Piedad Street in Cubao, Quezon City.  The bus leaves daily from Cubao. Bus fare starts at ₱760 ($15) to ₱980 ($19).  Travel time is roughly 12 hours. You can book online at their official website: codalinesph.com

  Alternatively, you can also reach Sagada via Baguio. However, if you are passing through Baguio, you need to accomplish the Baguio travel requirements for Passing through travelers.

1.Ride a bus to Baguio. There are several bus lines that travel to Baguio, such as Victory Liner, Joy Bus (Executive Coach Bus by Genesis Transport), Dangwa Transit, Philippine Rabbit, Dagupan Bus, Saulog Bus, etc. Travel time from Manila to Baguio is roughly 5-6 hours, depending on traffic.

2.Take a cab to Baguio Dangwa Terminal and ride a GL Bus Trans Line. Buses depart to Sagada and ends in Ambasing (Sagada), or Besao (Mountain Province). Travel time is approximately 5 hours and 30 minutes. First trip is around 5:30 AM and last trip is 1:00 PM, so make sure to catch the last bus.

Alternatively, you may also catch a cab to Slaughter House. Lizardo Bus has daily trips from Baguio to Sagada, first trip is around 9:00 AM.

Important : Sagada isn’t the last stop of the bus, you can ask the driver or verify with other passengers if the stop-over is already Sagada.

SAGADA TOUR PACKAGE

Take note that upon arrival in Sagada, all tourists are required to pay the ₱100 ($2) registration fee, a tourist kit and tourist ID will be provided.  The tourist ID will serve as a pass when entering the tourists spots in Sagada. Some sites like Sumaguing Cave requires a local guide. When hiring a guide, remember that 1 guide is good for up to 5 persons, so, you can save if you are traveling in a group. You can hire a guide at Saggas or at Sagada Tourism Office.

If you’d like to avail of the Sagada Tour Package, here’s the current Saada tour package rate as of 2022. The tour package includes 1 guide, good for up to 5 persons. Meaning, the tour rate below is good for 5 persons already.

WHERE TO STAY IN SAGADA

At least 1 night stay is required when traveling to Sagada, because you need the code from your accommodation to register online as part of the Sagada travel requirements.  And you need to book in advance (at least 2 days before your trip) and get a code to register at Umali Kayo website.  Make sure to book only at DOT-accredited and LGU -certified accommodations. You can book through the link below and contact the  Sagada inn/homestay/guesthouse after you’ve book to get the tourist code.

DIY SAGADA ITINERARY

Here’s a sample Sagada itinerary.  I used the public bus here for future reference. But if you’re using a private vehicle, you can just refer to the estimated departure time below.   All tourists spots in Sagada are now open including Sumaguing Cave, Lumiang Cave, Bomod-ok Falls, Pongas Falls, and Lake Danum.

TRAVEL REMINDER:

• Those who choose to travel are strongly advised to check the LGU health protocols regarding Covid-19 and take health conditions and personal comfort levels into consideration before departure.
• The Sagada Travel Requirements information above may change without prior notice. Please double check with the respective LGU.   
• Please don’t touch coffins and burial sites.
• Please refrain from asking locals to wear their traditional clothing just for photos.
• As much as possible, please ask permission from taking photos of locals especially elders.
• Please avoid joining any rituals without permission from elders.
• Please refrain from making noises in the community especially on burial grounds, and other religious and sacred places.
• Dispose your trash properly.
• Leave what you find – rocks, plants, etc.
