Porto to Lisbon Atlantic Ride

Great ride, pedaling along the beach and through forests, many miles of which are bicycle path and board walk. The bicycle provided were perfect, lightweight, front suspension MTBs with provided large capacity handlebar bag. The ride was not overly taxing, although hillier as the days went on. The cafe stops were delightful. Historic and natural beauty surrounded us. Hotels and buffet breakfasts were perfect. The guide Alex a Portugal native was superb, corralling us as needed for safety, espousing on history, geography and such. We had a friendly group and a lovely time. Highly recommended.

Bikes: Good to excellent, saddle size was a downgrade. The large, padded saddles caused new friction where sitting wear points didn't exist. Unfortunately, bike companies refuse to standardize bike saddles so there is no solution for clients traveling too far to bring a saddle. Route: appreciate the tremendous work on routing . . . but it appeared as fair-weather routing. Spring rains turned many (most) miles of hard-packed dirt (with a bit of gravel) into mud, hectares of mud. (And in the water/mud, one cannot see the potholes.) We made a few ride-arounds after bogging down too often in the seasonal mud. We also rode around the silly segment to 'walk the bikes on the sand'. Recommend Eurobike recommend one free and one pay mapping routing service to clients to use with the GPX provided. Lodging: Strongly prefer lodging on the route and with local flavor vs corporate (holiday vs business traveler). Lagos - Hotel Tavoli had ants in the bathroom. Lodging at Albefera, Cerro da Marina was excessively off the route and in a heavily residential area. Luggage transfer: perfect.

We had a terrible experience with Exodus. We signed up for a "Self-Guided Cycling in the Douro Valley" several months in advance. Our detailed contacts were asked for by Exodus, but then never communicated to the actual operator. This meant that our agreed pick-up driver never showed up (he had incorrect information) and we had to fumble with international calls and roaming charges to contact a real person on a Saturday morning. Exodus could have offered us compensation on the spot for this ordeal. I wouldn't recommend their trips to anyone. Look around as Exodus charges a fortune.

Guide was excellent. A lot of riding on busy highways with no shoulders. Also a lot of off road cycling. Plenty of rest stops. Hills were all doable. Meals not included were 15 to 25 euros each.

Cycling Portugal - Porto to Lisbon

Tour was great! The places we traveled by bike were scenic and not heavily used by autos. The hotels were all good although the rooms were small in a couple of instances. Breakfast each day was good. The guides were very friendly and helpful (Sebastian and Michael), Sebastian even helped me find a Portuguese SIM card for my phone and a compatible wall charger. Michael's picnic lunches were delicious and we looked forward to them every ride. I would gladly plan to travel with Tour Radar again

ExperiencePlus is most definitely the Best Bicycling Adventure company in the world! Unique Chalking System shows bicyclers the route to follow and allows bicyclers to travel at whatever pace of bicycling they wish. Chalking is definitely more enjoyable than GPS, however GPS is also an option with this company. For me, a GPS Voice aways talking interferes with my enjoyment of the tranquil and scenic areas that I am bicycling through. We have now completed 2,106 miles of bicycling with ExperiencePlus. We plan to complete many, many more miles of bicycling with ExperiencePlus.

Buying a bike in Portugal

Already before we moved to Portugal, I had set my mind on an electric bike. Imagine: exploring our surroundings by bike, waving to neighbors, the wind through my hair, the whistling of birds, stopping here and there and most of all no vroom-vroom sound of a car. Joyful!

Only, those slopes… The road where we live drops 100 meters in about 1 km, or rises 100 meters in about 1 km, depending on which direction you choose. Cycling like in my joyful imagination, no change… And yet that e-bike had to come.

Bicycle brands in Portugal

Electric cycling is still at an early stage in Portugal. In some coastal areas, major cities and tourist areas it is emerging. You will find enough bicycle shops on the internet, where you can buy or rent, electric or not. In the hinterland you can find a few good bicycle shops, aimed at (semi) professional cyclists and mountain bikers.

However, I wanted an electric hybrid bicycle for recreational use in a mountainous area. That was quite a search! Of course, I could have bought a bike in the Netherlands, but I preferred a brand that is known here. If the bike is having problems, I can get it fixed.

The best-known bicycle brands in Portugal are KTM, Canondale, Cube, Merida, Trek, Scott, Haibike, Specialized and Pinarello. Most electric bicycles are equipped with a Bosch motor.

But whereas in Holland you can take a test drive at any bicycle shop as soon as you walk in, that is not the case here. After extensive research on the net, I had a few options in mind. A Haibike sduro or a KTM macina. The closest bike shops where they could be selling them are in Porto and Viseu. I was kindly helped in all of them, sometimes even in English. I received a detailed technical explanation about the bikes, but not about the model I was interested in. ‘Cause they didn’t have them in stock or couldn’t deliver them.

Mmh, perhaps I could then take a test drive on another model of those brands? That was not possible, or only on special show days. And still they couldn’t deliver the model I had in mind. They often tried to sell me a different model, in which I was not interested at all. After 6 stores, it made me a little despondent. I certainly wouldn’t buy an expensive bike without having a test drive on it.

In May 2018 we went to Lisbon for a few days. I found a bike shop nearby that rents and sells electric bicycles. At be-electric we rented a haibike and a German tank for Nuno, a Riese & Müller, both with helmets. It was a great day to test a bike. There was a strong northwest wind and from Cascais we could do a nice climb towards Santuário da Peninha. A chapel and palace at 488m height.

First, we drove laughing against the wind, along the coast. And then the climb followed. Despite the bike saddle pain we went up the mountain quite easily. We were enjoying this electric cycling! And although we hadn’t cycled for a long time, we sizzled down the mountain again with confidence. (45 km/hour!) The Riese & Müller was an impressive bicycle, but almost €1500 more expensive than the haibike. So I stayed with the Haibike. It took 2 months for it to be delivered, but the owner personally delivered it to our door.

So now I cycle again! Waving to neighbors, enjoying the whistling of birds, but without the wind through my hair. A bicycle helmet is mandatory on the electric bicycle in Portugal and if not; I wouldn’t dare without it!

Thanks for info. It is helpful. I have three questions. 1. How much was your bike? 2. When you go to a store or anyplace you want to walk around once you arrive on your bike, how do you lock it up? Is there a safe way you would suggest? 3. I will be moving to Gois, one hour east of Coimbra. Did you find any bike shops near there that could sell me an electric bike? I also will be looking for an electric scooter.

Hi Jeanie, thanks for your comment! The bike cost around €2600. And I also bought a lock (AXA folding lock ± €45). Make sure you buy a lock that fixes the bike to ‘earth’ so nobody can easily take it away in a van. I even left it on our little train station here for a day. And that went well. I also remove the little e-board-computer form the bike when i go into a shop. Luckily there aren’t many people here who can cycle and the stolen-good-market for bikes is not so big here in Portugal (compared to the Netherlands). 3. I didn’t look for shops in your area. I only know one really big shop in Leiria. And for scooters… My husband spent some time looking for a scooter last year. Considering range, power and main use in our area (with some really steep slopes) he got his mind set on a NIU scooter: made in China, Panasonic lithium-ion battery pack, Bosch motor. site: https://www.niu.com

Existing shops do not seem to be offering this brand through the official Portuguese import channel. My husband contacted the manufacturer and got into contact with the official distributor in Portugal. He was and is still thinking of becoming a scooter dealer himself.
