The geometry is even better if your heigth is in the torso, not the legs, like me. I'm 6', 220 lbs (down from 250 in 7 months) but most of my heigth is in the torso.-- Popcorn Ceiling Removal

None so far

Smooth gear changing Reasonable weight. Suspension works well.

Noisy and poor brakes.

I found the Utopia very attractive to look at and is a joy to ride. It is a well balanced bike and handles brilliantly, it is very smooth at going up and down the gears. However the brakes are very poor and really let down a good overall bike, they squeal and often there isn't enough friction between the pads and the disc itself, I have more than once pulled the disc brake apart and tried to rough up the pads and remove dirt from the disc. This works for about 5 miles or so then the dreaded squealing returns. Although it is a fantastic bike once it has some decent brakes fitted.

Fun to ride, fast on road (17-18mph without breaking a sweat). Lockable shock works great. Good quality paint job (no chipping despite power wash and hail storm abuse) Fairly light weight for such a large and solid frame with shock.

Horrible useless disc brakes. Hard seat Loose grips Mixed components Bolts under seat, on handlebar and on frame are all rusted after 3 months.

2011 Trek Utopia. Bought the bike as a first, not sure if I'd ride pavement or trails. Have been back to the LBS about 10-15 times to buy stuff, try and have them look at something or buy repair or replacement stuff. The saddle is hard as a rock and shocks to the rear tire are transferred straight to the saddle. The brakes squeal, rub and don't always provide full stopping power. Sometimes none at all. They'll stop squealing and actually work better in the rain, for some reason. Got first flat within a few weeks (500 miles), due to a tiny rock lodged in the tube, arguably it must've been there since the installation by Trek. Rear derailleur cable and ferrule was all worn out at 700 miles, rendering the shifting frustrating. Needed new cable housings and cable. Tires wore out by about 1200 miles (with rotation at 800); could've kept them going longer, but the way they became flat with huge knobs on the side made them ride unstable in turns. The real fun problem I've now discovered at 1400 miles: the front disc is no longer aligned with the brake housing. It rubs on the housing of the disc brake assembly. The LBS refused to help me with this problem (as well as the above problems), tactfully dismissing my requests for maintenance or the free tune ups they promised. So I put a flat washer by the quick-release bolt to move the disc into alignment; it is now back to the middle of the brake house assembly between the pads, but stopping force from the front brake is almost non-existent. The wheel and disc itself is not bent and runs completely true, so I'm guessing the problem is the quick release bolt/nut has worn. The grips do not stay on the handlebars, constantly have to twist them back on. The crank/bottom bracket is making cracking sounds, as is the steering/stem. There is also a clicking sound when pedaling, coming from the pedals. Applying lube or washing it hasn't resolved it, and as I mentioned, the authorized trek dealer I bought it from isn't providing the tune-up as promised.

Lock-out front fork, 700c "knobby" tires, disc brakes, and overall ride-ability.

None so far. I know most complain about their saddles, but so far so good; its comfortable enough for me.

2011 Gary Fisher Utopia by Trek. Excellent bike for the price, and I really love the options I get with this bike. It rides smooth and fast down the streets, and I can jump off to a dirt trail with no hesitation.

Frame, Seat post.

Disc brakes, tires, component group is average at best, fork is spongey, but I do weigh in at 250lbs.

It's a 2009. Good frame, fits me well being a clydesdale rider. I changed the tires to something with a less aggressive tread, and the fact I had three flats in as many rides! Disc brakes are absolute garbage. They squeal like a bottle rocket going off. I may put on some V-brakes and take off these disc's. Other than that, it has been relatively good.

Diamondback hardtails, Cannondale R1000

Durable, well balanced, and fast for the size and weight. For a mid-priced commuter bike, you can't beat the Utopia. The geometry is even better if your heigth is in the torso, not the legs, like me. I'm 6', 220 lbs (down from 250 in 7 months) but most of my heigth is in the torso.

Weight and mediocre components. Shifting is sometimes unpredictable (Shimano 105) and the disc brakes will quickly teach you the art of adjusting and replacing pads yourself. None of these weakness diminish the strengths of this bike.

Great bike for commuting; albeit, a little heavy. The the money, the bike is honey. The packaged components are basic entry level items; however, the frame is sturdy, durable, and will yield many years of service and pleasure.

Diamondback Topanga.

Smooth, road bike fast, good handling, looks.

vibrations on seat during off road. I'm used to a full suspension with my old specilaized stumpjumper. Tires lifting up pebbles hitting downtube frame and sometimes gets in your shoes, still heavier than aluminum road bike.

Nice, smooth, and fast ride on bike paths and along bike lanes. 75 mm travel Manitou shocks helps with small road bumps. Tried riding through light gravel dirt road. Experience some vibrations on the seat because it’s a hardtail. I noticed the tires are lifting some pebbles that some of them tiny stones got in my shoes, I guess WTB interwolf got smaller tractions on its tires, compared to regular mtb tires with wider tractions. But when I got back to a pave road, city, bike path, bike lanes or curb sidewalks, ah! I think that’s where the strength is, smooth ride. Went riding with a friend on his road bike and I was able to keep up. The bike is lighter than a mtb, but still slight heavier compared to a regular aluminum road bike. I’m gradually switching to road cycling and this bike is helping me to transition to it, and I plan to keep it.

1999 specialized stumpjumper, 1981 shimano aluminum racer bike

29er, strong frame, high quality, decent component set for the price, very stable at speed, Genesis geometry.

The stock fork isn't appropriate for anything more than bike paths. Rear wheel clearance is tight for high volume MTB tires unless the FD is upgraded.

I bought the Utopia because I wanted to see if enjoyed mountain biking. Neeless to say, I did. Consequently, I replaced the stock fork with the 29er REBA Race fork. Replaced the FD with a Shimano XT derailler to add clearance. Upgraded the tires to higher volume 29 x 2.1 Motoraptors. Now it's fully the equivalent of the Gary Fisher X-Caliber 29er and I'm very happy with it.

tested various hardtails

Everything except the pedals

The pedals and umm nothing.

I purchased this bike to make the 7mi commute to school. I put some road tires on it and was in business. This is a very nice bike. It shifts really smooth even when pedalling hard up a hill. The front shock is nice to take the jarring out of holes in the road. I orginally had some problems with the disc brakes, they were not set up correctly and after my first ride the front wheel would not spin freely. I ended up having to take it back to the bike shop to have them fix it. Other than the first problem I like the discs, they work well even when it is wet outside. The pedals sucked, I switched them out for some clipless shimanos. I really like this bike, I wouldnt take it offroading or anything despite being a hybrid, but it is good to get you around.

Fuel EX The top of the line Fuel EX 9.9 , which gets a full SRAM XX package in 2011, is now a 100-percent carbon frame. The chainstay, the last part that was aluminum on the outgoing 9.9, is now carbon and the switchover saves 100g: claimed weight for a complete bike is just over 22 pounds.

Light is good, stiffer is really good.

Which is why at the rear of the Fuel EX is a new variation of ABP dropouts called ABP Convert, which lets you swap the 135mm QR dropouts to the increasingly popular 142x12mm thru axle system (Trek uses a RockShox Maxle Lite QR axle). Trek claims that ABP 142 dropouts are 40% stiffer than a standard open dropout. Trek specs matching 142mm rear wheels on all EX carbon models and on the aluminum EX 9. Less expensive models get 135mm rear wheels, but can be upgraded (excepting the base EX 6 and EX 6) to 142 in the future.

You might be surprised to see DT-Swiss wheels on the higher end Fuel EX models—and some Remedy and Scratch models as well—instead of the usual Bontrager (a Trek-owned brand) stuff. John Riley, Trek’s mountain product manger, explained that there is no directive that states he must spec Bontrager components; he’s free to pick the best parts to hang on his bike. Riley liked the performance of the 142x12 rear end, but Bontrager didn’t have compatible rear wheels, so DT got the call up.

A final small, but noteworthy update: Trek added dropper post housing guides to the EX.

The Fuel EX line grows by one model in 2011. There’s a new low end carbon bike, the EX 9.7 . Including women’s specific, there’s a whopping 11 models in the EX line.

Carbon Tax? Rewinding the tape a bit, lots of folks are worried about rolling with a carbon bike for MTB. Trek would prefer that your carbon mountain bike lives a very long life as well, and usesz a two-part protection system to protect the otherwise vulnerable (to rock strikes) down tubes of EX’s and other carbon Trek mountain bikes. On the outside is Carbon Armor, an external pad on the undersides of down tubes, near the bb; OCLV Mountain is a tougher, and slightly heavier carbon layup used only on more vulnerable areas of the frame.

Remedy The top of the line Remedy 9.9 gets endowed with carbon “seatstays” made from toughened OCLV Mountain composite; chainstays are still aluminum. The 9.9 will also get a SRAM XX group. Trek added dropper-post housing guides and Remedy receives ABP Convert: like the Fuel EX, if it comes with a 142x12 rear end, it has DT-Swiss wheels.

Remedy (and Fuel EX) models with FIT-damper-equipped Fox 32 forks get a Trek-specific tune. The heart is a custom piston with two ports, instead of the stock three, and a larger diameter base shim on the compression side. Trek claims their tune is smoother and more reactive, and better matches the feel of its proprietary (Fox made) DRCV shock than the standard Fox tune.

The DRCV shock receives a bit of love also in the form of refined rebound tune which, Trek says, provides a touch more control on bigger impacts, without effecting the ride on smaller bumps. (Way more on the benefits of DRCV here )

Trek added two models to the Remedy line: a lower end carbon 9.7, and a new high end aluminum model, the Remedy 9.

Scratch Air The 167mm-travel Scratch Air frame remains unchanged for 2011, but it sees a host of parts refinements. Up front it gets Fox’s all new 160mm 36, naturally. In back, Trek has replaced last year’s Fox DHX Air shock with a custom tuned RP23. Trek says it found no performance advantage in the DHX Air. Plus, the RP23 is much lighter. Internally, the shock receives a custom rebound tune designed to improve control on big impacts.

All Scratch models have what Trek dubs, “integrated downtube protection,” which is their fancy way of saying, ‘rubber pad.’ Like Carbon Armor on Trek’s carbon bikes, it protects the frame by blunting rock strikes on the underside of the downtube near the BB, but on Scratch models, it’s removable. It’s not just cosmetic protection: a hard strike from a pointy rock can damage an aluminum frame enough to cause a premature frame failure. The pad can be retrofitted to last year’s Scratch frames.

Scratch Air models have a 2x10 drivetrain with Race Face cranks an MRP shift guide and a bash guard. The top end Scratch Air 9 has DT-Swiss wheels.

Scratch The Scratch (no ‘Air’) uses the same frame as the Scratch Air, but has a coil-sprung suspension. In 2010 the Scratch and Scratch Air were both spec’d with 160mm forks. For 2011, Trek uses the new coil sprung 180mm Fox 36 in partnership with custom tuned Fox coil shocks. The top end Scratch 9 has a DHX RC4 shock with a tune influenced by what Trek’s World Cup Downhill racers use on their Session DH bikes. Trek says it tuned all three compression valves: it’s more responsive with more control in the midstroke than the stock RC4 tune.

Scratch models don’t have a front derailleur, and Trek specs a 9-speed drivetrain with Race Face cranks and MRP chainguide. Like the Scratch Air, it has the downtube protection pad. If you want a front derailleur with your coil springs, the Scratch frame will accept one.

Gary Fisher Collection The Gary Fisher collection as been up on the Trek website for almost a month now, but beyond big Trek logos, there are refinements to these models as well.

Superfly For 2011 the Superfly carbon 29er hardtail shaves 150 grams off its frame with a claimed 15 percent increase in torsional stiffness; the weight loss comes despite getting Carbon Armor for the underside of the down tube. There’s an all new rear end that’s almost all carbon: the only bits of aluminum are the dropout scuff guards. There are now five sizes, and they’re now equipped with 100mm rather than 80mm forks.

The Superfly also gets something called Fisher Control Column (FCC), which refers to a front wheel equipped with taller and wider hub flanges, which increases the spoke bracing angle, as well as 25mm hub endcaps, which increase the interface area between the fork and hub. Both are claimed to boost front end stiffness and improve steering response and accuracy. It’s not a new idea: Specialized has pushed its oversized end caps, and a stiffness improvement, for a few years now. FCC will come in two versions: Trail and Race. The difference comes down to rim width: 25mm for Race, 28mm for Trail.

There are now two Superfly models, one with a SRAM X.0 build, while the less expensive Superfly Elite has SRAM X.9.

Superfly 100 The full suspension Superfly 100 ‘s one frame change for 2011 is the addition of Carbon Armor under the down tube. Otherwise, it’s down to spec changes. There are now two models: the Superfly 100 has a SRAM X.0 build, while the less expensive Superfly 100 Elite has SRAM X.9. Both get FCC Race wheels.

Rumblefish Trek calls the Rumblefish “The Fuel EX of 29ers.” Updates are relatively minor for 2011: the biggest change is the addition of ABP Convert to the rear end. Up front there are FCC Trail wheels.

Paragon The Paragon features the new Pro Series hardtail frame—a higher end aluminum 29er frame Trek calls, “An aluminum version of the Superfly.” It has a 1.5/1.125-in. tapered headtube and press-in BB86 bottom bracket. The Paragon comes with 100mm-travel Fox forks and is offered in five sizes.

Cronus CX Fisher goes high end with CX with this carbon ‘crosser . It’s pretty stacked with features: 1.5/1.125 tapered head tube, FCC Road and internal cable routing (will accept either full or interrupted housing). Trek/Fisher have used a low mount brake hanger that attaches to the fork crown (instead of the typical high-mount hanger which clamps to the steerer tube, or hangs off the headset top cap), claiming it removes braking forces from the steerer tube and reduces brake chatter.

Gary fisher collection 2011.

trek gary fisher utopia 2011

Fisher bikes is now to become a Trek ‘Collection’, it has been announced this week.

The name Gary Fisher is synonymous with the origins of the sport which began nearly 30 years ago, when the sports pioneers first rode their Klunkers down the infamous Repack trail in California. Many of those early names, including Gary, went onto form bike brands.

Fisher Bikes was formed in 1983, but in 1993 Trek bought out the company, with Fisher staying on to direct the brand. This led to many shared technologies between the two brands, with Fisher able to make use of Trek’s massive research and development department. That all changes for 2011 as Trek has taken the decision to ‘rebrand’ Fisher bikes as a ‘collection’ within the Trek range.

“This makes sense. I love this strategy,” says Gary Fisher. “I’ve been working with Trek on the Fisher Brand since 1996, but this puts me right in the middle of the best team of bike people. I can now bring my ideas to Trek, number one bike brand in the world. Better bikes and more people on those bikes. I love it.”

What this means is that Fisher bikes will still be available, but they’ll be marked with the Trek logo on the downtube, and will be available at all Trek dealers, vastly opening up Fisher bikes to a much larger potential customer base.

Trek President, John Burke added: “2010 has been a fantastic year for both Trek and Gary Fisher bikes. But we weren’t taking full advantage of the incredible resource we have in Gary Fisher, the man. We realised we could bring Gary’s ideas to many more people by creating the Gary Fisher Collection.”

Gary Fisher has been at the forefront of the industry since those early years, continuingto challenge tradtional ideas and lead with innovation. More recently he’s been a big advocator for 29ers. This quest for innovation is set to continue, as Gary Fisher will still be involved in the development of the Fisher Collection. It’s possible to imagine that the Fisher name will be used for all of Trek’s 29er bikes into the future…

The new range is largely made up of 29ers, with two full sussers and eight hardtails. There’s also four 26in wheeled hardtails under the tag ‘Dualsport’, as well as one road bike. More on the bikes soon…

Gary Fisher Montare 2011

  • Add to quote

trek gary fisher utopia 2011

My brother in law has a Utopia which is a very similar bike with the same fork. The lockout does not equal full rigid bit it does stiffen it up quite a bit. There's a small amount of compression when you push down hard, and it will give you some compliance if you hit a big bump or pothole. I think his is a 19" and weighs around 27 pounds, so I imagine the Montare might be a bit lighter. Overall he's very happy with the bike, and I think it rides quite nicely. Have you looked at some cyclocross bikes? Given the longer distances you're looking to ride on pavement, they might be a better option than a hybrid with a more upright riding position. Granted you'd likely be giving up the disc brakes, but you'd still be able to run the beefy tires you want.

Thanks Gabe23, I dont like the drop handle bars so cyclocross is out for me. 27 pounds is around 12.2kg which is exactly the weight of the Bianchi I test rode. That felt pretty light to me so thats great. Do you think the Montare would be lighter? I think I need to try one out as well as trying out some of the other options for comparison. I'm thinking I need a 17.5 inch frame as I'm 5'8 and have an inside leg of 30". I just wish i was over the choosing stage - it was a great fantastic day in London today.. i need to get a bike asap. Thanks N

I'm only guessing that the Montare might be a bit lighter than the Utopia due to the upgraded drivetrain components. Other than the brakes and a few other things, pretty much everything else on the bike appears to be identical. My guess is that a 17.5" frame model would probably come in somewhere around 26-27 pounds.

Don't worry about the weight, worry about what fits you best. I have a Fisher Monona, similar bike without the suspension fork. It is excellent for riding to work (5 miles each way) and riding down bike paths. It is definitely no race bike, but it is sturdy enough for light off road duties. No way would I want to ride it 60 miles in a single outing, 30 would be questionable. Drop bar bikes are much better for long rides, even if you don't use the drops you still have 3x the available hand positions. I would not want a hybrid with suspension fork because almost all of my riding is on roads and paved paths. With 32 or larger tires you really don't need the suspension fork. The Trek FX bikes are excellent as well, my wife has a 7.2FX WSD.

Owner... I bought the Montare last month, this is my daily commute. Questions first- the remote lockout works great, as mentioned earlier, it is not a full lockout, maybe 10 mm of travel when locked. I'm not sure how much it weighs. I can lift it pretty easily. It does make a difference, especially when climbing. One thing you should know about this bike is it's fast! on my 10 km daily commute, the new bike takes almost 15 mins off my old mountain bike ride. In fact, I have not even run out of cranks in top gear (where the pedals just spin without purchase of the drivetrain) despite hitting 45 KMH downhill. I have put on a rack with pannier, softer grips and have not yet changed the seat which I found real hard at first, I guess because it is breaking ME in. I have been out on trails and it works pretty good. Regarding that comment about frame being big and high center of gravity, it's unavoidable with the 700cc tires lifting you up and how high the headset has to be in addition to that in order to accommodate fork travel. When I was at the store, they were recommending a 22" bike for me (I'm 6'2") but I tested out a 19" Katai they had in stock (Same frame) and found that it was bigger than my 20" mountain bike so I ordered the 19" frame. Its a long wheelbase and I am in a pretty aggressive riding position, this is one of the reasons I got the soft grips! The long wheelbase and more aggressive position makes it difficult to pull the front wheel up with a yank. On my old mountain bike, I could yank it up 12 inches, but the new one barely 3 inches. That has to figure into how I ride so I adjusted how I ride in order to not plan on getting away with hops. The only issue I have had with this bike is the rear caliper. It is squeaking like mad while the front one is smooth and silent. They told me at the shop to break it in, but after a month and 300 km, its not happening, so I am going to take it back and see if I can get this taken care of as a defect/quality control issue. I like the fork... my commute is on some real awful city roads up in Canada where the winters mess them up yearly. Worth it totally. Love everything about it, how it looks etc. the paint is very subdued and no one is going to know what it is you are on without real close inspection, this suits me just fine as the less attention it attracts when locked up, the better. Great bike.

Owner... I just purchased a Montare myself. I absolutely love everything about the bike except I'm having the same issue with the rear brake. I'm going to be taken it in for an adjustment soon and plan asking them about this. It feels like there is a small rock or something in the caliper. It's good to know beforehand that this might be a quality control issue. (Thank you) I'm new to the bike scene and do mainly street riding but it is great to have a remote lockout if you want to jump a curb or take it on hard packed dirt trails. As the guy above said...It is FAST!!! I would definitely recommend this to others.
