Hello everyone, Would it be possible to use the preposition in after the noun trip instead of to ? In that case, is there any difference in meaning? Example: - a) The had organized a trip in [region/state/defined area/city - e.g. Normandy, California, the Alps, Berlin ] - b) They were on a trip in [region/state/defined area/city] Thank you .

Senior member.

"in" and "to" in a sentence about trips have slightly different meanings. They had organized a trip in Normandy. This sounds like they are already in Normandy, traveling around and seeing things. They had organized a trip to Normandy. This sounds like they are still back at home, waiting for the trip to start. But really, the difference is not very big, and everyone would understand you whichever word you used.

sdgraham

If you are trying to emphasize that they visited several places in that location I would use "around". They organized a trip around Normandy.

Vladimir Putin and Tucker Carlson composite

Tucker Carlson confirms Russia trip and teases Putin interview

Former Fox host was spotted in the Russian capital, where he says he was to interview Putin about Ukraine war for X/Twitter show

The far-right pundit and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson confirmed on Tuesday he was in Moscow to interview Vladimir Putin , and said he would air his conversation with Russia’s president to counter what he described as pro-Ukraine “fawning pep sessions” by western media covering the war.

Speculation had been growing for days that Carlson, who was dumped by Fox last year for “ getting too big for his boots ”, had traveled to the Russian capital to meet Putin, whose reasons for invading Ukraine he says have a right to be heard by the American public.

But his visit, which reportedly has included visits to the Bolshoi ballet and dining in fine restaurants, has drawn accusations he is acting as a propaganda tool for Putin, whom he has frequently defended. Russian media, meanwhile, have hailed Carlson as a celebrity “who speaks the truth”.

In a post to X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday afternoon, Carlson portrayed the upcoming interview as a chance for the American public to see the “truth” of the Ukraine war against a backdrop of what he says, without any evidence, are a succession of lies told by western media outlets.

“Most Americans have no idea why Putin invaded Ukraine or what his goals are now,” Carlson said in the four-minute video recorded in Moscow and trailing the interview , which he says will be on his own website and posted “uncensored” by the X owner, Elon Musk, at an unspecified time.

Why I'm interviewing Vladimir Putin. pic.twitter.com/hqvXUZqvHX — Tucker Carlson (@TuckerCarlson) February 6, 2024

“You’ve never heard his voice. That’s wrong. Americans have a right to know all we can about a war they’re implicated in, and we have the right to tell them about it,” he continued.

“Western governments by contrast will certainly do their best to censor this video. They are afraid of information they can’t control.”

Carlson, whose downfall at Fox followed his on-air amplification of Donald Trump’s lies that his 2020 election defeat was fraudulent, untruths that ultimately cost Fox $787.5m in a defamation lawsuit brought by the Dominion Voting Systems company, also claimed Americans were “uninformed” about the effects of the war, and had “no real idea of what’s happening in this region”.

Since leaving Fox, Carlson has taken to broadcasting on X, where his shows – which have included speculation about UFOs among other topics – are often conspiracy-laced and have included segments on disgraced figures like Russell Brand and Andrew Tate.

Even during his prime-time Fox News years, Carlson become notorious for extremist and bigoted language, especially around the issue of immigration.

after newsletter promotion

In the post on X, Carlson attacked Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and implied that only he would be telling the truth about the war.

“The populations of the English-speaking countries seem mostly unaware. Their media outlets are corrupt. They lie to the readers and viewers,” he said.

“The interviews [Zelenskiy has] done in the US are not traditional interviews, they are fawning pep sessions specifically designed to amplify Zelenskiy’s demands that the US enter more deeply into a war in eastern Europe and pay for it.

“That is not journalism. It is government propaganda of the ugliest kind,” he added.

Blinken travels to Egypt and Qatar in his bid to avert a wider regional war.

trip or tripp

By Zolan Kanno-Youngs

reporting from Cairo

Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met with leaders in Egypt and Qatar on Tuesday, the second day of a Middle East tour aimed at preventing an exchange of attacks with Iran-backed militias from spiraling into a broader regional war and to rally allies around a proposed cease-fire agreement for Gaza.

Mr. Blinken, on his fifth trip to the region since the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel, visited Cairo to meet with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi of Egypt before traveling to Doha for discussions with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, the emir of Qatar, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim al-Thani, the country’s prime minister and foreign minister.

Mr. Blinken began the trip a day before by meeting in Saudi Arabia with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, discussing how to achieve “an enduring end to the crisis in Gaza,” as well as the need to reduce tensions across the region, according to Mr. Miller. He is also scheduled to hold meetings with leaders in Israel and the West Bank during the trip. All are key players in negotiations over a potential pause in the fighting in Gaza.

Egyptian and Qatari mediators have presented Hamas with a proposal , backed by the United States and Israel, that would pause the fighting between Israel and Hamas for the first time since a one-week cease-fire in November during which more than 100 hostages were freed.

The Biden administration and its Arab allies are still awaiting a response from Hamas to a framework for the deal, which would involve the exchange of more than 100 additional hostages held in Gaza for a pause in fighting and the release of Palestinians detained in Israeli jails. Mr. Blinken and Mr. el-Sisi also discussed that proposal during the meeting on Tuesday.

A U.S. official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to detail the diplomatic efforts, said Mr. Blinken would tell American allies in the region that the Biden administration’s recent strikes against Iran-backed militias should not be interpreted as an escalation of fighting in the Middle East.

American and British warplanes, with support from allies, have carried out a series of airstrikes against the Iranian-backed Houthi militia in Yemen in an effort to deter the group from attacking ships in the Red Sea.

Mr. Blinken discussed with Mr. el-Sisi the “shared objectives for regional stability and prosperity, including halting Houthi attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea.”

The U.S. has also conducted dozens of military strikes in recent days on targets in Iraq and Syria, in retaliation for the killing of three U.S. service members at a base near the Syrian border in Jordan.

During his meeting in Cairo with Mr. el-Sisi, Mr. Blinken discussed U.S. opposition to any displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, according to Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesman. Egypt has rejected the idea of opening its border to allow displaced Palestinians to take temporary refuge on its territory.

“Secretary Blinken emphasized the United States’ rejection of any forced displacement of Palestinians from Gaza and commitment to establishing a Palestinian state that provides peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike,” Mr. Miller said.

When he visits Israel on this trip, Mr. Blinken was expected to convey American concerns about the civilian death toll in Gaza, according to U.S. officials.

Mr. Blinken will also discuss what diplomats call the “day-after” plans for governing Gaza after the fighting ends, including a possible role for the Palestinian Authority, which administers parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

How to Get Around New Orleans

If you’re flying into New Orleans, you may wonder if you should rent a car during your girls trip. If your entire group can fit into a taxi or Uber, skipping the car rental may be more cost-effective. Many hotels charge steep parking fees, and you’ll likely do a lot of walking anyway.

Plus, you can use the New Orleans trolley or call a ride-share when you need time off your feet.

However, if you’re planning to spend a lot of time exploring the surrounding towns, or if you need to squeeze into a full seven-passenger minivan, then renting a car might give you the flexibility and ease of travel you need.

Things to Do on a Girls Trip to New Orleans

1. have a spa day.

New Orleans may not feel like the most tranquil city, but it’s still a great place to have a spa day. Most five-star hotels in the Central Business District have world-class spas designed with luxury and relaxation in mind.

2. Go shopping on Magazine Street

You could easily spend multiple days shopping along Magazine Street. This avenue stretches six miles and features something for everyone. There are yoga studios, coffee shops, boutiques, and fantastic restaurants. Most of it’s locally owned, so you can find plenty of unique treasures.

3. Admire the Houses of the Garden District

Walking through the Garden District of New Orleans is one of our top things to do in the city. It’s so relaxed and quiet – probably one of the best places in the world to take a stroll. Here, you’ll find intriguing architecture, leafy sidewalks, and a few cafes.

Come in the morning or evening to stretch your legs and enjoy this unique place. Or, book a walking tour of the Garden District to learn about the history of this beautiful place.

4. Take a Food or Cocktail Tour of the City

You only have so many meals and cocktail hours during your girls trip to New Orleans. Don’t leave them up to chance. A guided food or cocktail tour will make sure you’re hitting up all the best places – and ordering the best things.

Whether you want to sip the best drinks or try the most delicious Cajun cooking, a guided tour is an excellent investment for your limited time in the city.

And if you want to get really creative, consider taking a cooking class in New Orleans. Find some options HERE

5. Get Dressed up for Fancy Brunch

You need to enjoy a fancy brunch while vacationing with your girlfriends in New Orleans. We’re sharing a few of our favorite spots below. Be sure to make reservations at all these New Orleans brunch spots, as they’re very popular (for good reason).

  • Commander’s Palace: We’re always quick to recommend Commander’s Palace for its white-glove service and exceptional style. They open late morning on Saturdays and Sundays for their jazz brunch. There’s a dress code here, so it’s a great chance to dress up for an Instagram-worthy outing.
  • Court of Two Sisters: You can’t beat a courtyard brunch in the French Quarter. Dine al-fresco in a secret garden-style setting as you enjoy jazz music and a delicious buffet meal. They have a great selection of classic brunch fare and Cajun favorites, like gumbo and duck a l’Orange. Court of Two Sisters also offers brunch throughout the week, so it’s a great option if you’re in town on a weekday.
  • Muriel’s : We love the ambiance of Muriel’s on Jackson Square. Its multiple rooms and patio each have a distinct character. Besides its perfect setting, the classic Muriel’s Bloody Mary is reason enough to visit this great place. But their entire menu is delicious. Come on Saturdays for a classic brunch or Sundays for a jazz brunch.

6. Find Cocktails with a View

Whether you are day drinking your way through the city or just want to sip with some scenery, you need to find the New Orleans bars with the best views. We think Hot Tin is one of the best rooftop bars in the city, as it overlooks the New Orleans skyline and has such a sleek ambiance. For something closer to the French Quarter, head to Vue Rooftop Bar at the SpringHill Suites.

7. Visit a Museum

You could dedicate your entire New Orleans vacation to museum hopping. And for your girls trip, we recommend you visit at least one of these fascinating places.

  • New Orleans Museum of Art has an array of artwork, but its sculpture garden is its main draw. Plus, its location in City Park allows you to get away from the Business District and French Quarter to see another great area of the city.
  • The National WWII Museum is a surprising gem in New Orleans. History buffs in the group will love the stories and artifacts from this world-changing era. It’s located on Magazine Street and you can get tickets HERE .
  • Mardi Gras World is the perfect place to get up close to the wonders of Mardi Gras, as it’s home to the famous parade floats. Take a guided tour to see how they build these incredible masterpieces from the ground up.

8. Tour a Plantation

If you want to get out of the city and walk through history, then a plantation tour could be a great thing to add to your New Orleans itinerary.

Whitney Plantation is our top recommendation because it focuses solely on the experiences of enslaved people. Laura Plantation also features the stories of enslaved people and how they influenced Creole culture.  Oak Alley Plantation looks straight out of a movie with its giant oaks draped in Spanish moss. Some of “Interview with a Vampire” was filmed here.

9. Join a Walking Tour of the French Quarter

Even if you spend days wandering around the historic French Quarter, you’ve still only hit the surface of this amazing place. The music, art, scenery, architecture, and (most importantly!) the people’s stories are so interwoven. The best way to better appreciate the vibrancy of the French Quarter is through a walking tour.

An expert tour guide will take you through the neighborhood, highlighting some of its most interesting parts and revealing hidden gems.

10. Cruise on the Creole Queen Riverboat

See New Orleans from a different point of view while enjoying quality time with your girlfriends. The Creole Queen is an authentic paddle-wheeler that offers day and night cruises along the Mississippi River. They offer jazz excursions, historical tours, and holiday events that are perfect for a girl’s trip.

11. Wander Jackson Square and Bourbon Street During the Day

You can’t visit New Orleans without seeing Jackson Square and Bourbon Street. Though often crowded and loud, these places hold a distinct energy and are fun to see. Impromptu parades, street performers, and sidewalk artists bring these streets to life.

We recommend going during the day if you plan to simply wander around. You’ll feel safer and can better see the architecture and landscaping around Jackson Square, home of St. Louis Cathedral, and lots of entertainment.

12. Get Scared on a Ghost Tour

New Orleans is widely considered the most haunted city in the United States. It seems like each building holds some kind of paranormal (or just creepy) story. Whether you want to learn a little about its haunted past or get your socks scared off by horrid stories, there’s a ghost tour for you.

This is a great way to learn about the city’s voodoo culture, the above-ground cemeteries, and catastrophic horrors.

13. Tour the Swamps on an Airboat

If you and your friends crave a little adventure, then an airboat tour will do the trick. Get out of the city and see the swamplands in an unforgettable excursion. Feed alligators or spot wildlife from afar on a thrilling tour through Louisiana’s bayou.

14. Listen to Live Music

New Orleans is home to some of the world’s best jazz and blues musicians. Even if you’re not typically a fan of this enthralling style of music, you should still check out the live music venues during your girls trip to New Orleans. Here are some of the best spots to find great sounds:

  • Preservation Hall: This French Quarter icon has been home to traditional New Orleans Jazz since 1961. Today, they present 45-minute shows every night, a great way to appreciate the music without committing an entire night to it.  Reserve your tickets online in advance .
  • Blue Nile: This music club hosts a range of music styles, including classic jazz, funk, and rock. Its indoor detailing holds true to the colors and artistry of New Orleans.
  • Maple Leaf Bar : This fun venue has nightly performances from great acts, including brass bands and talented soloists. Come back on Sunday for poetry nights.
  • House of Blues Restaurant & Bar: This multi-room event venue sees several big-name and local acts. There’s a full restaurant, bar, lounge, and nightclub, making this place a great spot to visit as part of a well-planned evening or a spontaneous outing.

15. Take a City Bike Tour

New Orleans is a beautiful place to bike, plus it’s a great way to get in some casual exercise during your girls getaway. However, it can be tough knowing where to bike in a new city.

A guided New Orleans bike tour will allow you to pedal through the city without getting stuck in impossible intersections or tight corners. Guides can offer great insight into the incredible history and culture of the city while helping you navigate its unique streets.

Best Restaurants for a Girls Trip to New Orleans

New Orleans is famous for its delicious food. Many people come from all over the world just to try some of the city’s best restaurants. For your girls trip, you need to plan on visiting some of these places that put New Orleans on the map for delicious, soul-nourishing food.

Café du Monde

You will wait in a long line, and get powdered sugar in your hair, but you will eat one of the most delicious treats in the world. This is Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, a place on nearly every visitor’s bucket list. The warm fluffy donuts and fresh coffee are worth the wait, and the ambiance is unbeatable: a crowded French Market cafe that allows for the best people-watching and jazz-listening.

If you want to avoid the lines, consider visiting one of  the ir other locations  outside of the French Quarter. Otherwise, enjoy the chance to slow down and take in the sights and sounds of this unique neighborhood.

Going to Mother’s in New Orleans is a whole experience—a taste of true local flavor from an 85-year-old establishment. Food here is served from a fast-moving lunchline, and it’s almost always crowded. This is a great place for a po’ boy, Jambalaya, or glazed ham. Mother’s is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, with lines typically going out the door and around the corner.

Central Grocery and Deli

Central Grocery is the French Quarter icon that’s home to the original Muffuletta sandwich. This Italian-style sandwich uses the freshest meats and house-made olive salad. This is where you’ll go before a girl’s trip picnic, as it’s just a quick lunch counter (often with a long line). The sandwiches are great and are another bucket-list meal for most visitors.

For a fine dining experience, we recommend Brennan’s, a colorful yet classy establishment on Royal Street. Their history dates back to 1946, and today they offer an inventive menu full of creole flavor. Though it is an upscale restaurant, it’s still a really fun place – the perfect balance for a fancy dinner during your girls trip.

Arnaud’s in New Orleans is super classy, with tuxedo-clad servers carrying artful plates of French dishes. Feeling adventurous? Opt for their chef’s tasting menu to get some of the most inventive and delicious options curated for the most discerning diners.

Best New Orleans Hotels for a Girls Trip

New Orleans has many four and five-star hotels that are perfect for a girls trip. Most will be in the Central Business District, where there are high-rise buildings, lots of entertainment venues, and endless shopping. This area neighbors the French Quarter across Canal Street, less than a mile from Jackson Square.

  • The Ritz-Carlton – The Ritz offers a decidedly posh ambiance while maintaining a strong sense of place. The building dates back to 1908, and the entire hotel honors over a century of New Orleans hospitality and rich culture. But the rooms are still incredibly comfortable and up-to-date. CHECK RATES HERE
  • Eliza Jane – Eliza Jane in New Orleans will be perfect if you love staying at boutique hotels during your girls’ trips. It’s convenient to both the business district and the French Quarter, though there’s more to this spot than its great location. Its 196 rooms are simple yet comfortable, and the lobby lounge is incredibly inviting. CHECK RATES HERE
  • Roosevelt – The New Orleans Roosevelt Hotel is under Hilton’s Waldorf Astoria Brand, a five-star line that promises luxury and comfort. It’s got spacious rooms, sleek interiors, and a rooftop pool. Plus, there are great restaurants and a spa onsite.  CHECK RATES HERE
  • Windsor Court  – Though New Orleans is famous for its French influences, the British-inspired Windsor Court still fits in as a historic, charming hotel. Anyone visiting for a girls trip will love its heated rooftop pool, oversized rooms, afternoon tea service, and perfect location near the French Quarter and the Mississippi River.  CHECK RATES HERE
  • VRBO – If you need more space and flexibility than a hotel room will provide, then a vacation rental could be a better fit for your girls trip. The Garden District is a quiet neighborhood to escape to, but there are also some good rentals in the French Quarter if you want to be near the hustle and bustle. CHECK RATES HERE

2024 Super Bowl on the cheap: How NFL fans can make Las Vegas trip for nearly nothing using points, miles

If you want to party in vegas during super bowl week, there's a way you can do it for cheap.

super-bowl.jpg

If you're a fan of the 49ers or Chiefs  and considering making a last-second trip to the Super Bowl , one thing that may be holding you back is the cost of the trip: It's not cheap to visit Las Vegas, it's not cheap to go to the Super Bowl, and it's certainly not cheap to do those two things together.

Although Vegas is an expensive city, especially during Super Bowl week, there is a way to pull off the trip on the cheap: You have to use points and miles.

If you have a bunch of credit card points or airline miles sitting around, the Super Bowl is the perfect time to use them.

First, if you're traveling to Vegas, you need a hotel, so let's check out a few places where you can stay this weekend. We'll look at booking dates that run Friday, Feb. 9 thru Monday, Feb. 12 (All prices as of Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 12 p.m. ET)

  • LINQ.   If you want to stay on the strip, this is one of the few options where you have that won't break the bank. For 90,000 Wyndham points (30,000 points per night), you can book book a spot at the LINQ that otherwise would cost you nearly $1,200 in cash for three nights. If you have Citi Thank You points, you can transfer them to Wyndham's program.
  • Embassy Suites by Hilton Las Vegas. Since everything is so expensive in Vegas, you might as well stay somewhere that provides a free breakfast, and that's what you'll get here. This hotel is about 1.5 miles off the strip, so you're close enough to the action to enjoy it, but far enough away that you should be able to get a good night's sleep. This hotel can be booked for 50,000 points per night or 150,000 total. If you have Membership Rewards points from America Express, you would just need to transfer 75,000 points to your Hilton account to book these three nights. If you were to pay cash, this two-room suite with two double beds would cost $1,237.
  • Courtyard by Marriott (Las Vegas convention center). If you're a Marriott fan, there aren't too many great options, but this one is definitely good value. Although the hotel is slightly off the strip, it's within short walking distance to the monorail, which will take you directly to the strip. There are currently rooms available for 138,000 points (46,000 per night), which is a solid rate for a room that would cost $1,670 if you were to pay cash.
  • Fairfield Inn and Suites (Las Vegas Stadium area). If you're actually attending the game, this hotel may be your best bet. It's located just 0.7 miles from Allegiant Stadium, which means you'll easily be able to walk there on game day. Also, it's just a 1.3 mile walk to Mandalay Bay, which is where the NFL experience is being held. Although this hotel has a hefty price of $1,544 right now, you can book two queen beds for just 126,000 points (42,000 per night).

Hotel availability is changing by the hour here in Vegas, so these exact locations may not be available for booking when you look. That being said, Hilton seems to have the most availability when it comes to booking with points.

As you'll notice below, it's usually not a problem finding a flight TO THE Super Bowl; the expensive part is finding a cheap flight home. Here are some flights for fans flying in and out of Kansas City:

Kansas City (MCI) to Las Vegas (LAS) for Friday, Feb, 9

  • American Airlines (9:36AM-2:09PM): 16,000 miles
  • United (10:15AM-11:20AM): 32,500 miles
  • United (4:15PM-5:20PM): 32,500 miles

LAS to MCI for Sunday, Feb, 11

  • United (11:30PM-4:05AM): 15,000 miles

Note: With the game likely ending around 6:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. local time, you should have more than enough time to stick around and watch the trophy ceremony before catching this Sunday night red eye.

LAS to MCI for Monday, Feb, 12

  • American Airlines (5:20AM-9:04PM): 9,500 miles
  • United (6:25AM-2:30PM): 32,500 miles

Here are some flights for fans flying in and out of San Francisco:

SFO to LAS for Friday, Feb, 9

  • Delta (10:35AM-12:15PM): 15,500 miles or 13,100 if you have a Delta credit card
  • Delta (1:35PM-3:15PM): 15,500 miles or 13,100 if you have a Delta credit card
  • American Airlines (9:20AM-11AM): 15,500 miles
  • American Airlines (2:30PM-4:10PM): 18,000 miles

  • United (6:35PM-8:20PM): 21,500 miles
  • United (7:25PM-9:10PM): 21,500 miles

LAS to SFO for Monday, Feb, 12

  • United (8:15PM-9:59PM): 32,500 miles
  • Southwest (8:45PM-10:15PM): 21,191 points (nonstop to Oakland)

Finally, we have the Super Bowl ticket. Unfortunately, unless you're related to a player or unless you win one in a contest, there's no cheap way to get a Super Bowl ticket.

The cheapest available ticket is going for roughly $7,500 on the secondary market right now (including fees), so it's going to be about $15,000 if you want to take a friend. The upside, though, is that you'll be in Vegas where there will be plenty of places to watch the game if you don't want to fork over $15,000. Also, this is Vegas, so maybe you'll win $15,000 on Saturday and then you can buy yourself a ticket for the game on Sunday.

So what does this all mean? It means that if you're an NFL fan with some points or miles lying around, you can realistically pull off a last-minute trip to the Super Bowl. If you're not in San Francisco or Kansas City and you're thinking about coming to Vegas, the flights should be much cheaper when booking with miles.

There's still plenty of time to get to Vegas, and with the Super Bowl here, it's definitely one party you don't want to miss. And, oh yeah, if you want to know where all the biggest parties will be, we've got a full list here .

A new coming-of-age film 'How to Have Sex' follows 3 teens on a spring break trip

Elissa

Elissa Nadworny

NPR's Elissa Nadworny asks Molly Manning Walker and Mia McKenna-Bruce about their new coming-of-age film, "How to Have Sex."

ELISSA NADWORNY, HOST:

Partying on Lake Havasu, crowding into a hotel room at Panama City Beach, Cancun or Cabo - the spring break trip, a so-called rite of passage. For 16-year-old British teens Tara, Em and Skye, it's off to Greece for a holiday of clubbing and carousing on Crete in the new movie "How To Have Sex." Molly Manning Walker wrote and directed it. Mia McKenna-Bruce stars as Tara. And both join us now. Welcome to the program.

MOLLY MANNING WALKER: Thank you so much. Hello.

MIA MCKENNA-BRUCE: Hi. Thank you for having us.

NADWORNY: Did either of you do a spring break trip like this before? Like, can you relate to this experience in the film?

WALKER: Yeah, yeah, we both did.

MCKENNA-BRUCE: For me, it was - I mean, pretty much what you see in the film.

NADWORNY: Wow.

MCKENNA-BRUCE: It's kind of - someone described it to me a couple weeks ago, and I was like, that's it. They described it as like going into battle. You go in all guns blazing.

WALKER: Yeah. I went on, like, maybe six of them between the ages of 16 and 20. Some of the memories are like the best memories of my life, and then some of them are obviously more complicated.

NADWORNY: So it's probably already clear to our listeners that we're going to be discussing things that might not be suitable for children who may be listening, but that's also, in a way, kind of what this movie is about - that middle period when people are doing adult things with bodies and brains that aren't necessarily fully formed yet.

WALKER: Yeah, totally.

NADWORNY: One of the things in the film that really struck me is the storytelling felt so realistic, that kind of drunken chaos and confusion, the head-spinning feeling of being at a frat party and kind of not knowing where your friends are. You can't think straight. There's like this emotional roller coaster of it all. I wonder if you could just talk about kind of that world-building, and especially I'm interested in the pool, Molly.

WALKER: Yeah, for sure. We hired a documentary cinematographer, so that was one of the main things. The production design or the costuming was all sort of referenced from vlogs and TikTok. And we spent a long time scouting, and I guess we sort of eventually settled on probably the most party hotel in the resort, which is, like, right next to all the clubs. It wasn't until like a later date where we were all standing on the roof for a tech recce, and we were all looking at the pool and our heads like kind of craned. And we're like, is the pool a penis shape? And turns out the pool was a penis shape.

WALKER: And I guess that says a lot about kind of the environment and the sort of expectations of the environment.

NADWORNY: Yeah, you're like, I'm spot on, actually, in making this movie.

WALKER: And we picked the right hotel, I guess. And then, like, halfway through the shoot, the line producer came to me and was like, we're kind of under budget. Like, is there anything you want? And I was like, a drone shot of the pool.

NADWORNY: (Laughter) Mia, your character Tara starts off as this ball of energy. She has these great little jokes. Can you just start by telling us about her?

MCKENNA-BRUCE: Yeah, I mean, Tara kind of embodies that period of youth, you know, where you would really think you're a lot older than what you are, and you're kind of figuring it all out. And she does have this incredible energy, but then feels like she's got to continue with this energy, you know, even when she's not feeling like she wants to. So constantly trying to live up to the expectations of what people have of her, which I think is one of the things that resonates with a lot of people when they watch this film.

NADWORNY: She's also a virgin. What's her relationship to sex in this movie?

MCKENNA-BRUCE: Yeah, so when we first meet Tara, she's a virgin, and we see the girls discussing a lot that she is going to lose her virginity on this holiday. And one of her lines is literally, I don't want to die a virgin, which is hilarious because, I mean, we're looking at young girls that are, like, 16 years old and she thinks, you know, if she doesn't lose her virginity on this holiday, that's it. That's it for her, which just goes to show, you know, we're getting pressures from from all angles without having the tools to actually talk about it and understand what, what that means.

NADWORNY: You know, without giving anything away, is it true that in workshops before filming, girls who read assault scenes from the film didn't consider what was being described as assault?

WALKER: Yeah, you know, it would say, like, very clearly in the stage directions that Tara was very uncomfortable, and they would be like, but she said yes, so that's fine. So it was, like, an interesting comparison that they were sort of drawing to that meant, you know, yes is yes, basically.

NADWORNY: One night there's the scene where Tara is drunk and dancing and all you hear is her breathing and the pounding of the music. That scene feels like a turning point for your character.

MCKENNA-BRUCE: Yeah, yeah. You know, we follow Tara very closely on her figuring out what she's feeling and why she's feeling it. And I think we do reach this moment where she's a bit like, let me try and push through this because she doesn't know how to articulate it either, or who to go to, where to turn.

NADWORNY: Mia, I'm wondering, you know, you told W Magazine that you have two younger sisters, and you'd love for them to see this. Do you want them to see this out of pride for kind of their big sister, or because you want them to kind of get the message of the film about sex and consent?

MCKENNA-BRUCE: Definitely because I want them to get the message of the film, for sure. One of my sisters is 16 and the other one is 21, and sex has never really been an open conversation in our house. So for me, it was really important that, you know, from - as soon as I read the script, I was like, this is a brilliant way to open this conversation, to give us that in, you know, and also be able to talk about sex without necessarily using, like, yourself or your own experiences, just being able to have an open conversation around sex. And they have watched the film. They watched it when it first screened in London. And that's exactly what it's done for everyone in my family - kind of really opened up these conversations. And for me, like, that's just incredible that now my younger sisters and hopefully their friends as well, are starting to have this dialogue talking about what good sex is, you know, and, like, how it feels.

NADWORNY: Molly, I think this movie reminded me so much of being young. The whole film, I wanted to just be Tara's friend and give her a hug and kind of tell her everything I know now as an adult. For you, who kind of created her character and created this world, how does that make you feel? What's your takeaway from your debut film?

WALKER: It's been amazing. Like, I guess we thought we were sort of making quite a personal, small story. And I guess what we've realized over time is that it's a really universal story, and that's both amazing and kind of heartbreaking at the same time. And to see so many women feel seen by it - yeah, it feels like the conversation's got a long way to go, and we have a lot of battles to fight, I guess.

NADWORNY: That's Molly Manning Walker and Mia McKenna-Bruce. Their new film is "How To Have Sex." Thanks for speaking with us.

WALKER: Thank you so much.

MCKENNA-BRUCE: Thank you so much. Thank you.
