Love the trip, a bit disappointed in the hotel in Tel Aviv.

Best of Israel & Jordan Tour

Best of Israel & Jordan

the tour is organized well, all the customer service is excellent. Only thing I wish the tour should offer is the hotel upgrade option. The hotels during the trip are mediocre, I don't mind to pay extra for the upgrade. But the option is not offered. This could be a major concern to book future trip.

Just finished one of my beautiful memorable a week long journey through the hidden gem of Middle East Jordan with Trip500. Didnt know any other sight than Patra so each day there were surprises for me. Wadi e Rum, Karak, Citadel, Mount Nebu, Baptism Site other places from north to south .... I dont think much world knows about were great to visit n see. Moreover, middle in the areas of wars and conflicts, always the most peaceful and safe country to visit without any hesitation. From first day's airport pick up to last day's airport drop off, every aspect of the trip was perfectly managed. The guide (Maalik) provided to our group was simply amazing ... his trip planning, execution , time management , sight/history briefing etc were fantastic. Food was amazing ????? I highly recommend Trip500 for anyone looking to explore Jordan. Their expertise and attention to details for creating memorable journeys reflects through every aspect of their service.

My guide in Egypt Kimo Azuvietsh and driver Fayez were excellent. Their professionalism and regard for human decency, was beyond my expectation. My driver and Tour guide acted in just about every conceivable way to accommodate me during the tour. For example: when my hotel room water and Air Conditioner was not working. They reiterated to the hotel officials the importance, of getting these issues addressed in a timely manner or to moved Mr. Wess as previously requested to another room in their native language.

Holyland Israel & Jordan & Cairo - 14 Days Tour

Holyland Israel & Jordan & Cairo - 14 Days

Our guide Gadi managed our large group really well in Israel. It would be a lot smoother if we only had 1-2 hotels to pickup and drop off at. 4-5 hotels spread out wasted time in traffic. Gadi had deep and excellent knowledge and a treasured well used Bible to share and his Jewish perspective on the “must see” Jesus locations kept me thinking about how the Pharisees and Sadducee’s viewed Jesus. We needed another hour to see Petra so please try to get the Jordanian tour guide to shorten the much stop. Our scheduled hotel was overbooked and an alternate was sourced but that should have been done during the day while we were independently touring Petra. There was confusion at the airport Jordan to Egypt about the visas we feel this could have been handled better. Egypt was frenetic for sure. Again big distances between Hotels should have been avoided. Gigi was lovely very informative especially at he museum. Loved the pyramids and sphinx.

We did not like wasting time picking up people in different hotel levels. Tours should be designed for people in the same category staying at same hotel. Some lunch stops were poorly chosen. Guides were excellent.

Heritage of the Holyland and Jordan Tour - 11 Days Tour

Heritage of the Holyland and Jordan Tour - 11 Days

The tour went to all the places we wanted to go but occasionally we would have liked to spend longer and have some additional free time, especially in Jerusalem. The hotels were ok but too big for our liking and full of tourists, and it took time to travel between hotels picking everyone up. Overall the itinerary was good and our guide was very knowledgeable.

What people love about Israel And Jordan Solo Tours

The tour part was fantastic and would recommend it for sure. Please drop the Sea Net from your list of Hotels. The rooms are ok but small. The real problem is with service and the meals. Not even a 1 star for breakfast. Bread out but no butter. No coffee just water and really watered down juice.
My wife and I went on a 17-day tour of Israel, Jordan, and Egypt. The tour was well orchestrated. All the details of getting into and out of countries were handled professionally and with little cause of concern to us. Hand-offs between countries went well. We were guided by knowledgable people who had our best interests at heart (with possibly one exception). The only real complaint I have is that TourRadar turned out to be more of a facilitator than a tour agency with its own guides. I was confused when we got to Israel and found that neither TourRadar nor Click Tours (which answered my online questions) was the agency actually leading the tours. Not knowing that we would be connecting with Consolidated Tour Operators (CTO) led to some initial confusion in the Tel Aviv airport. Expecting to be linked up with Click Tours and knowing nothing about CTO, we missed connecting with the airport facilitator in Tel Aviv for nearly an hour while each of tried to find the other. If I had been told to look for a CTO representative, our stressful introduction to the tour would have gone much more smoothly. In Israel and Jordan, CTO handled our tour. In Egypt, the agency was Sylvia. I had expected to be part of a group that held together for the entire 17 days, but that wasn't the case. Groups formed and disbanded based on what individuals planned to visit. In Israel there were 11 of us, and we bonded quickly. In Jordan I was surprised that our group dwindled to five. And in Egypt there was only my wife and me. That left us vulnerable in Egypt to the care of our guide, who, because there was just the two of us, managed to fleece us of $150. I would never have signed up with TourRadar if I had understood that my wife and I would be left alone at one point without the safety of a group and unprepared to deal with a guide we didn't fully trust.

Overall, my trip was truly fantastic, but there were two things that weren't... First of all, for a singles trip, I expected roughly half & half, but there were only 5 men on my trip. We had 32 people total. Also, I took the trip when I was 53, and I was told that the age range was 50 and up. It turned out that I was the youngest by about 10-15 years. Most of the people were in their 60s & 70s. They were all wonderful people, but I would have liked to know both things before I signed up. Next time I'll know the right questions to ask.

Yes, I would travel to the ends of the earth with Amazing Journeys. So far the two trips taken with Amazing Journeys were chock full of eye opening adventures with rocking itineraries. Long after the adventures I am left with memories that inspire me and friends that I treasure. Amazing Journeys makes traveling easy. They think of every detail and provide explicit pre-trip instructions. The team is always open to questions and it is obvious this is more than a business to them, they really make you feel like family. During the trip they are with you to assist with anything you need, are friendly and the good energy they add to the trip is immeasurable. It's scary to travel alone. But, when I make a reservation for an Amazing Journeys trip I am confident. I know their trips attract high caliber individuals and the AJ team does everything in their power to make the travels easy and enjoyable. I'm so glad that AJ is around and I was lucky enough to hear about them.

This is the only company I have ever traveled with that will NOT give you a phone number of the leader during the trip. If you are lost, you are on your own to get back. In case of emergencies there is no way locally to directly contact the leader. In today's day and age it is essential to be able to connect during emergencies.

This is actually a policy that we have changed over the past few years and we now give the phone number of your tour escort in the case of emergencies.

The name is fitting. Just returned home from an AMAZING trip to Namibia. With the AJ staff's attention to detail all I had to do was pack my bag (and find my passport) and head out. This was my 12th trip with my AJ friends. Already looking at the website to plan the next trip.

Just returned from an Amazing Journeys trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. This was my 5th AJ trip--I've done both land and cruises. As always this trip was educational, enlightening and great fun. We moved quickly to see all the major highlights of both countries. The AMAWaterways Mekong Delta cruise was awesome. Malori and her fab team provided a great experience for all. My only complaint was that a couple of guides didn't have great command of English and were difficult to understand. Met old friends I'd traveled with before and made some new ones. Would recommend to anyone looking for adventure with a Jewish twist.

This was my first trip with Amazing Journeys - and there will definitely be another! From start to finish Malori Asman, put together journey that was both first class, educational and indescribable. Memories that will last a life time from learning about the S African people, their hospitality, positive attitude, their love of singing and their struggle to overcome their past; to learning all about different animals: the Big 5, the Little 5 and who knew the Ugly 5! And the the icing on the cake, getting to know an Amazing Group of Ladies - the Safari Sisters! Thank you for all the work that you put into this trip - for me each experience was appreciated and loved, and each experience exceeded the next. I now appreciate why so many people keep on traveling with Amazing Journeys!

Photo of Lisa R.

I would highly recommend Amazing Journeys for group travel with nice Jewish people who are also interested in traveling to fun and new destinations. Amazing Journeys and its staff are professional, organized and bring together a diversity of Jewish travelers for a fun time. I have been on three trips with Amazing Journeys - two New Year's Eve cruises and one adventure trip to Peru. They always take care of the important details so I can enjoy a carefree vacation. I also like that they work hard to make sure everyone feels warm, welcome, comfortable and included in all activities on their trips. I look forward to my next trip with Amazing Journeys very soon!

Photo of Lori L.

Amazing Journeys is really Amazing! I just completed my 4th trip with them. This is a travel group for Jewish Singles. They travel the world and send you on fabulous trips. They take care of everything from visas, to airport transfers and you see everything there is to see in the location that you travel to. Their tour guides, especially Stacey, are the best! Knowledge and able to handle all types of situations and problems that may occur. After I have traveled to different locations throughout the world, I feel there is nothing I did not see or do in the particular location. I recommend this travel group for those who want to see the world!

Photo of Toby S.

I have just completed my 5th trip with Amazing Journeys and getting ready for the 6th one to Australia/New Zealand in Nov 2016. The level of detail they put into every trip is insurmountable to any other travel company I have experienced. Each trip I have been on was more Amazing (hence their name) than the last. From cruising the Mediterranean, to a Jewish Heritage river boat tour through Eastern Europe, New years eve cruise through South America, an African safari, Hong Kong/China......all well planned, wonderful local tour guides, fantastic accommodations, and the list goes on. Travelers can rest assured that all details, big and small, are taken care of. If any emergencies occur, they are there handling it, making sure everything is taken care of. Are Jewish travel groups a bit more expensive than others, Yes. But well worth it. I have met some fantastic new friends from all over!! I have found everyone on their trips to be welcoming, friendly and we create fantastic memories. Can't say enough about Stacey and Malori. They are fantastic!!

Photo of Robin S.

Excellent, trustworthy Jewish singles company. As a widow that never traveled alone, I took a chance with this company and traveled to Peru and then took a South American cruise with them. So with some insight in this company, land and sea, I feel I can give a decent overview. They take care of everything once you get to your destination. They always have a personal escort from the company accompanying the group and is there for any issues that might arise. This is a very good thing. They keep things pretty active. So be prepared to stay busy. All the hotels are in great central locations but sometimes they are more like 3 star instead of at least a 4 star. Cusco in Peru is one example. Choice of hotel was disappointing when there were so many better options close by. Also when taking a tour, whether land or sea, make sure there's time to see the town. If not I would skip the tour. For example, I didn't take the rafting tour in Peru so I can explore Cusco which is a wonderful town. If I took the tour, I would have never seen the town and really missed out. Same with Puerto Madryn, Argentina. I heard the town was lovely which I missed being on an all day bus ride that I found to be very boring. On the other hand, they offer many excellent tours. One was Punta Arenas, Argentina where we went to see the Penguins which was one of the highlights of my trip. So it becomes a personal choice what you really want to do and see. They choose very good cruise lines. I was on Celebrity. They also take lots of pictures and post them and you can download them, which is nice so you never miss out on a picture. There are definitely more women than men. I think women just tend to travel more than men. I will definitely recommend Amazing Journeys as they got it down to a science but be more selective on the optional tours you sign up for

Take a number! A Manhattan party for Jewish singles comes back after a pandemic hiatus

jewish singles travel

( New York Jewish Week ) — How do you stand out when everybody’s dressed in white?

On Thursday evening, nearly 700 Jewish singles in their 20s, 30s and 40s gathered in Manhattan’s Riverside Park to celebrate Tu B’Av , a minor holiday often referred to as the “Jewish Valentine’s Day.” As requested by the organizers, everyone in attendance wore white — but people interpreted the assignment differently. Many women wore trendy, designer dresses, doing their best to look elegant and put together. Some of the men, meanwhile, wore white, wrinkled polo shirts.

This was Bangitout.com ’s first Tu B’Av White Party since before the pandemic began. Had COVID-19 not upended, well, everything , it would have been their 20th annual Tu B’Av shindig. Instead, it was an auspicious 18th convening of the summer event uniquely designed for Jewish singles in the greater New York area.

Founded by brothers and Yeshiva University alumni Isaac and Seth Galena in 2001, Bangitout started as a way to share Jewish content online. Over the years, it grew into a platform known for advertising kosher apartment shares, kosher restaurants and shiurim (lectures). They also became known for hosting signature Jewish events, like “Sukktoberfest,” a hybrid Sukkot and Oktoberfest party.

As for Bangitout’s other major annual event, the Tu B’Av White Party, it “simply enables singles to cut the crap and actually meet someone to marry,” according to the organizers’ marketing materials.

The Galenas claim nearly 50 couples who originally met and have gotten married through one of their parties. One couple, who met at the 2012 Tu B’Av White Party, got engaged at the same event the following year.

“These guys are the real deal,” Jordan, a lawyer and freelance writer at Bangitout.com, told the New York Jewish Week about the Galenas.

“You can really see the evolution of life through these parties,” he observed, referring to the matches — and subsequent families — that were made over the years

In fact, the Galenas’ own sister, Sarah, met her husband at a Tu B’Av party in 2008 — something she briefly demonstrated to a reporter by pulling out her phone and FaceTiming with said husband and their child.

Thursday’s White Party, like many singles events, employed a numbered matching system — everyone wears a sticker with a number on it, and a person can write down the number of someone they are interested in and place it in a large bucket. If the other person writes down their number, too, the pair will be set up on a date.

Still, some in attendance urged partygoers to flout the rules: Leora Schiffman, a matchmatcher, event promoter and founder of Leora’s List , encouraged singles to simply ask one another for their phone numbers, old-fashioned style.

“What’s the worst that could happen?” she asked.

The annual Tu B’Av White Party, hosted by Bangitout.com, is a singles event for Jews in their 20s, 30s and 40s. (Jackie Hajdenberg)

As the sun set over the Hudson River, tipsy singles took turns in the photo booth, refreshed their drinks at the bar, or listened to pitches from party sponsors, like Blink Date, a new audio-first dating app, or JScreen, a Jewish genetic screening service. Others pursued their mission single-mindedly: They were here to meet someone.

Two sisters from Flatbush, both in their early 20s, shied away from the crowd. They took seats at a picnic table, preferring to focus on their drinks and each other rather than approach a stranger.

But that’s OK, because a friendly stranger approached them instead. Howard — a young man from New Jersey wearing a white polo, navy pants, gray baseball cap and black, rectangular glasses — told the sisters why white is worn on Tu B’Av, when unmarried women in the Second Temple period would dance in the vineyards at the beginning of the grape harvest . “You wear white so you can’t tell the difference between a rich girl and a poor girl,” he said.

Historically, women would swap clothes so that even those who could not afford a new white dress would not be embarrassed on Tu B’Av. Here in New York, the singles aren’t quite dancing in the vineyards, but they did appear to be enjoying themselves in the public park — perhaps even paying an unconscious tribute to the grape harvest by grabbing a glass of wine. Overheard conversations ranged from women trying to rescue their friends from close-talking interactions with uninspiring men, to discussions on topics that veered from TV to antisemitism.

“I stopped watching ‘Chicago Med’ because I heard one or two of the main actors are antisemitic,” one young woman said to a new male acquaintance, both clutching drinks.

An older man in attendance, maybe in his late 40s, also dressed in white, didn’t come alone: He nonchalantly walked his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel through the crowd. Upon closer inspection, however, the dog, named Chicken, was also looking for love — she wore a number sticker, too.

Our weekly email is chockful of interesting and relevant insights into Jewish history, food, philosophy, current events, holidays and more...

It’s time to meet my bashert already!

Well, the summer is coming to a close and many single people are still asking, “How does a Jewish person meet their Jewish spouse?”

After many years of studying Jewish singles society, as a single man, I have witnessed many ways one can meet other Jews. Here are some of the best places and some advice from me. Because I’m still single:

At a wedding, you want to make sure that you are seated at a table with good single people. You are at the wedding to meet somebody. Focus. You are not there for the bride and the groom.

Now, there may be difficulties you will have to overcome. At family events, I usually end up sitting at the kids table; I am single, they are single. However, this is not optimal for meeting a potential spouse. Even if you like chicken fingers, try to make sure that they do not sit you at the kids table.

Work on your dance moves. People take notice of your circle dancing ‘horah’ steps. There is also the traditional time where the people dance in front of the bride and groom. Also known as the Jewish cypher, this is an especially good time for your dance work to get noticed. The Jewish Riverdance is a very popular move. It is similar to the Irish folk dance, but you are allowed to move your upper body. Doing pushups is another new dance that seems to be popular. That one is similar to the worm, but it doesn’t look like it when you’re Jewish.

Shul/Synagogue- Kiddush

The post services snack social, the Kiddush, is a great place to meet.

You’ve see this on National Geographic. A lion will not just attack a herd of zebras. Instead he waits by the water (water or watering hole can work- watering hole just makes it sound more like a National Geographic thing) and then pounces. So too, when that single you’d like to talk to approaches the Kiddush table, you pounce: ‘You like choolante?...So do I…Say, maybe you would like this piece of herring…Take my horseradish. They also have borscht today.’

You can meet during the prayer service as well, but that can cause a ruckus; especially when you have to start climbing over the partition to get a decent conversation going.

Costume parties, sushi parties, ice cream parties. Anything with the word ‘party’ works. Without a party, a toga is just a bedsheet.

Singles parties are also a great way to meet. But do not let anybody know that you are there because you would like to get married. Nobody is attracted to somebody who shows up to a singles party to meet people. That is the quickest way to chase away someone who is looking to find his or her potential spouse.

Holidays are particularly great times for parties. I met a beautiful lady at the costume party last Purim. If anybody knows who Tinkerbell was, please let me know.

Her Parents’ Home

Just hang out there. If you are good meeting the parents first, this is the route for you. It will make the meeting the in-laws ordeal much less awkward.

Loehmann’s Department Store

If her parents aren’t at the house, her mom might be there.

That one was dedicated to those people whose favorite era of Jewish jokes was the 1970s.

Fundraisers

This is a code word for singles event.

As a single man, this is a sneaky way to go to a singles party without people knowing you are at one.

Beware: Community fundraisers are for married people. Fundraisers for a cause that has nothing to do with the community, are for singles. For instance, a fundraiser for the local synagogue is for married people. Do not show your support. A fundraiser for children whose home got flooded somewhere in India, when your synagogue has a leaky roof, is for single people.

Show up to activities you like. Common interests are the most natural way to meet somebody.

Eater: If you like food, cooking classes can be a great way to go. You are allowed to eat the food after you make it. Unfortunately, you will have to put up with a prolonged process in order to get the food. Once I went to an eating class to get to the eating part quicker. But apparently, women do not show up to eating classes.

Collector: Show up to auctions. This is also a great place to go if you like hearing people talk fast and watching people wave numbered ping pong paddles.

When collecting, you get to connect with your childhood hobbies. If you are a man, you might meet a woman who loves baseball cards. Awesome. If you are a woman, you might find a man who likes Barbie. Not as awesome.

Bird Watching: Is there any better activity? No.

Biking: Take up biking. You do not have to enjoy every activity you do. Remember, the idea is to meet somebody with similar interests. You both find biking painful; now you have a match.

So those are my top suggestions. Believe me, I tried all of these out myself. It got to the point where I was doing 18 extracurricular activities a week, just to meet somebody. It was way too tiring.

Another good opportunity is coming up - Yom Kippur. Kol Nidrei is probably the best time to be checking out who else is in the synagogue. Yom Kippur: the holiday of love.

Where you’ll be going next year: the places not to miss and the hottest new flight routes

Cathy Winston

BY Cathy Winston

Rear view of two men jumping with joy on a country road in Glen Coe, Scottish Highlands, Scotland.

The experts are all agreed that next year is going to be a big one for travel. If 2022 was when we finally felt able to satisfy some of the thwarted wanderlust of the previous two years, 2023 is looking even more adventurous as restrictions become a fading memory.

“2023 is shaping up to be the year to get out and explore,” says Tom Hall, Vice President at Lonely Planet .

“With much of the world firmly on the road to recovery, travellers are looking for different locations and experiences.”

And whether you’re hoping to travel to the world’s wildest places or want to stay within the UK, prefer some tropical sun or a cultured city break, we’ve rounded up the hottest places to go in 2023.

Where to go in 2023

“Travel has changed since the pandemic, and mostly for the better,” says Tom Barber, co-founder of Original Travel . “No longer taken for granted, holidays have become more meaningful and the appetite to be out in the big wide world, visiting new places and trying new things is greater than ever.”

It’s an exciting year for Manchester, the only UK city to make it onto National Geographic’s Best of the World 2023 and Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2023 list.

“Next year is going to be a great one in Manchester for cultural happenings like the reopening of Manchester Museum, the launch of the new Factory International and the chance to tour Castlefield Viaduct,” says Hall.

The Factory will become the permanent home of the biannual Manchester International Festival, showcasing the best in music and theatre, while the Manchester Museum will feature new galleries focused on Chinese, South Asian and British Asian culture.

The recently expanded Jewish Museum and the newly opened ‘sky park’ on the Castlefield Viaduct have also helped propel the city back onto the hotlists — just seven years after it last made the cut for Lonely Planet’s list.

British Airways is launching its new twice-weekly flight to Guyana next March, putting the country firmly on the map for those looking to discover a destination away from the crowds.

One of South America’s smaller countries, Guyana is a similar size to the UK but with an astonishing 90 per cent of it covered in trees.

With fewer than a million people living there, it’s home to wildlife including jaguars and giant anteaters, the incredible Kaieteur Falls — one of the world’s highest single drop waterfalls, it’s twice as high as Victoria Falls — and its eco-tourism experiences and accommodation are growing.

“This new flight opens up one of our favourite destinations,” says Tom Barber, “which is not only fantastic for wildlife, but is also an exemplary destination for one of our predictions for why we’ll be travelling — Community-Based Tourism (CBT).

“CBT is all about choosing accommodation and experiences run and owned by the local community, so your visit directly benefits local people.”

Elefsina, Greece

The new European Capital of Culture — along with Veszprém in Hungary and Timisoara in Romania — the Greek city of Elefsina is close to some of the country’s key historic sites.

But despite being just half an hour north-west of Athens and around 45 minutes from Corinth, Elefsina (or Eleusis to the Greeks) is usually overlooked by tourists.

With 4,000 years of history to discover here, it was one of the five holy cities of Ancient Greece, along with Athens, Olympia, Delos and Delphi.

But as well as ruins and the archaeological museum to explore, Elefsina has been converting some of its more recent ruins: derelict industrial facilities such as old factories now host theatre performances, and there are more concerts, art exhibits and cultural attractions planned for 2023.

Patagonia National Park, Chile

Chile set aside 11 million acres of land for national parks — aided by the largest private land donation from a private entity to a country, from philanthropist Doug Tompkins, who co-founded the North Face and Esprit brands — which is helping expand conservation efforts in the Patagonia wilderness.

The Patagonia National Park is part of the resulting new network, covering more than 750,000 acres in Aysén, and unlike the more visited areas of Patagonia in Argentina, it’s firmly under the radar.

“What sets this side of Patagonia apart from others in neighbouring areas is the genuine remoteness and isolation, which feels like you are being let in on a secret, and the only keepers of this secret are the flora and fauna themselves,” says Tom Marchant, co-founder at Black Tomato .

The Highlands, Scotland

You don’t have to travel halfway round the world to find wild countryside to lose yourself in: the Highlands have been named one of National Geographic Traveller’s top destinations for 2023, in part for projects to “rewild” the area.

Nearly a million trees have been planted in the 23,000-acre Alladale Wilderness Reserve, while the Affric Highlands project is starting to restore a huge swathe of land covering around 500,000 acres from Loch Ness to the west coast, plus other initiatives to reintroduce flora and fauna once native to the area.

The new Dundreggan Rewilding Centre, due to open in March, will be running a series of programmes to help visitors discover more too.

Vilnius, Lithuania

Marking its 700th anniversary in 2023, Vilnius is celebrating with 12 months of events, including an initiative encouraging both visitors and locals to plant more than 100,000 trees around the city and create an urban forest in Ozas Park.

There will be art exhibitions and other events celebrating the Lithuanian capital’s 700th birthday, while you can get a sense of how the city looked when it turned 500 at a new interactive pavilion at the Lithuanian National Museum — as well as exploring its well-preserved Old Town.

One of the last countries to re-open borders after the pandemic, Bhutan began to welcome tourists once again in September — and for the first time in 60 years, the 250-mile Trans-Bhutan Trail is also open to hikers.

Allowing tourists to discover previously remote communities, you needn’t tackle the full length to see another side to this Himalayan kingdom.

Famously committed to limited levels of tourism for years, the increased Sustainable Development Fee of $200 (around £165) will continue helping preserve the country’s cultural heritage, as well as planting trees and benefiting Bhutan’s citizens.

Dates for your travel diary

Have you been to Moscow ? In all seriousness, they have the prettiest metro stations I have ever seen and I still can’t believe how immaculate and lovely every station was. There are several different stations pictured below and this is the second of several posts where I will show you the beauty of the Moscow Metro. Did you see part 1 ?  There really isn’t much to say because I think the pictures speak for themselves. I have so many more pictures to share with you!

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
