Lualenyi Camp Tsavo West Safari

Imagine a tented camp in the middle of the savannah, with only six "Out of Africa" style tents equipped with every comfort, set on a small hill from which the view extends to the horizon, blessed by the snowy cone of Kilimanjaro in the background.

Lualenyi Camp is set in a pristine private game reserve of 432 square kilometers which forms part of the Tsavo West ecosystem.

Around the Lualenyi camp waterhole at the base of the hill, watch animals arrive to quench their thirst: elephants, zebras, giraffes, but also the great African predators and a myriad of birds.

The Six tents are well spaced from each other to offer tranquility and fully enjoy the silences of the African night, a panoramic terrace for having meals, a fascinating mix of African and Italian haute cuisine and to enjoy a few minutes of well-deserved relaxation between one game drives, sipping a tea or a coffee, perhaps reading a book dedicated to African nature that you can choose from in the library at your disposal.

After returning from your safari at sunset a crackling campfire will welcome you to enjoy a well-deserved aperitif.

We recommend the dry season in Tsavo as many animals travel to permanent water sources. The lack of rainfall means that few water and food sources are available thus the best time for a safari.

Tsavo East vs. Tsavo West

Kenya’s Tsavo East and West national parks are two of the most popular destinations in Africa for spotting wildlife and enjoying an authentic and immersive safari experience.

Together, the two parks are known as the “ Tsavo National Park ecosystem “, which spans an area of around 22,000 square kilometres (8,500 square miles).

It’s the biggest game park in Kenya and one of the largest protected wilderness areas in Africa.

As well as offering some of the best game viewing on the continent, the parks have a magnificent range of diverse landscapes, from rugged mountains to vast savannahs and lush forests.

Tsavo West is slightly smaller than Tsavo East and has dramatic volcanic landscapes and red soil (which helps give its elephants their distinctive red colour).

Tsavo East is known for its rolling green hills and acacia woodlands.

Both parks offer spectacular opportunities for game viewing, with large populations of elephants, lions, cheetahs, and giraffes, not to mention a rich variety of birdlife.

While not usually as easy to spot, you also have a pretty decent chance of seeing rhinos and leopards here too.

Regarding accommodation, the lodges in Tsavo West tend to be more expensive and luxurious than those in Tsavo East.

East usually receives fewer visitors than West so can be a great option for peaceful, undisturbed game viewing.

Whichever Tsavo National Park you choose to visit, you’ll find a range of accommodation options, ranging from simple campsites with basic facilities to luxury safari lodges.

How to get to Tsavo National Park

For most visitors, the easiest way to access Tsavo East and West is by flying into either Nairobi or Mombasa and organising a transfer from there.

Most of the above lodges can help you to arrange a transfer to and from their location – check with them if you are unsure.

A few are even able to arrange a transfer in a light aircraft, although this would significantly increase the cost compared with a regular transfer by road.

Mombasa is closer – about 200 kilometres (3-4 hours by road) from the town of Tsavo, near the centre of Tsavo National Park. From Nairobi, it’s about 280 kilometres (4-5 hours).

If you’re feeling adventurous, you could also hire a car and drive yourself. You’ll need a 4WD vehicle to access most of the lodges described in this post – again, check with the lodge directly.

Always use a price comparison site like  rentalcars.com  to find the best deals.

🤩 Check availability and prices!

For those looking for public transport options, there are buses that run from both Mombasa and Nairobi to the town of Voi (Google Maps) , which is a fairly major transport hub for the region.

From Mombasa, it takes about 3 hours. From Nairobi, it’s 6 hours.

How to organise game drives in Tsavo East and West

Most people organise their game drives in Tsavo East and West National Parks through their accommodation.

If you stay at any of the above lodges, the staff there will be able to help you arrange everything.

Typically, you can book either a morning or afternoon game drive which lasts for around 3-4 hours.

A few lodges – such as Sarova Salt Lick and Voyager Ziwani – can even organise night-time game drives for you. I’ve done a couple of these before and they’re incredibly exciting!

You’ll be led by experienced guides who are familiar with the area and knowledgeable about the local wildlife.

It’s a fantastic way to explore the stunning landscapes and animals of both parks, all from the comfort and safety of a safari jeep.

Alternatively, you can organise a 1-day safari as a day trip from either Nairobi or Mombasa. This could be a good option if you don’t have much time but still want to see Tsavo National Park.

However, for the full safari experience, I’d always recommend spending at least one night in the park if you can.

Most nationalities require a visa to visit Kenya, and you’ll need to apply for it in advance.

** I recommend using  iVisa.com . Their online visa processing service is quick, secure, and easy to use. **

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re a seasoned safari-goer or a first-time visitor, these lodges would all make a perfect base from which to explore the breathtaking natural beauty of Tsavo National Park.

I hope this guide to the best safari lodges in Tsavo East and West has helped make your decision a little easier. Whichever lodge you decide to stay at, get ready for an unforgettable experience!

Guests can fly from Nairobi to the lodge and this takes about an hour to get to the nearest airstrip where a 4×4 safari vehicle will be waiting to take you to the facility. The drive on the other hand takes about 4 to 5 hours and although it takes more time, it is a more scenic way to get to the National Park and the lodge. The lodge offers some of the most affordable and comfortable rooms to tourists visiting the Tsavo West National Park .

Safari activities available at Ngulia Safari Lodge

Other lodges at Tsavo West include the Kilaguni Serena Lodge, the luxurious Finch Hattons and the fabulous Lion’s Bluff Lodge located in the community wildlife conservancy known as Lumo.

Must-do activities while staying at the lodge include the following:

Five sister hills : exploring the hills is one of the activities that guests at the lodge should engage in. The hills are a volcanic black lava outcrop surrounded by long grass and conical hills that make up the five identical hills. This is one of the most beautiful sceneries around Tsavo West National Park and the lodge can easily arrange a trip to the hills.

Mzima springs : Mzima in Swahili means life and the reason why the springs were named Mzima because of the large crowds of wildlife it attracts including gazelles, crocodiles, elephants, giraffes and hippos among others. The water that flows to the springs is from the Chyulu hills. The spring is surrounded by thick acacia trees that are home to several bird species and monkeys and there are marked trails you can use to get to the Mzima springs and through the acacia trees.

Shetani lava flows : over 500 years ago, the locals witnessed an eruption where the fire was erupting from the ground and they believed that the devil was coming from the ground and hence named it Shetani. Currently, the black flowing lava is 8 kilometres long, 5 meters deep and 1.6 kilometres wide offering a spectacular sight to tourists.

Rhino Sanctuary : About 20 black rhinos were introduced into the Rhino Sanctuary within the vicinity of the lodge. The rhino sanctuary has a lot of security around it so do not be alarmed because the black rhino is an almost extinct species due to constant poaching by the locals.

Guided nature walks : the guided nature walks start from the well-organized garden, and through clearly marked routes where experienced tour guides will take you around the national park.

Safari Game drives : The lodge offers two game drives per day that is one in the morning and one in the afternoon. These are conducted in a 4×4 safari vehicle accompanied by experienced guides who know the best wildlife viewing spots.

Cultural visits : Cultural visits around the national park are the best ways in which tourists can get to learn more about the culture of the locals and also the perfect chance to get authentic souvenirs which help in the community development.

Birding at Tsavo West : The lodge is located directly in the path of the bird migration from Europe and Siberia during the months of October, November and December making it a very good birding spot.
