Ulrich Shnauss is a producer and musician hailing from Kiel, Germany who was born in 1977. Since his debut in 2001 he has released four studio albums, two E.P’s, and a countless number of remixes and standalone singles under his own name.

One might not assume that a pioneering electronica musician would be overly fond of the dream-like indie rock haze of shoegaze. However, Ulrich Shnauss grew up utterly in thrall to the likes of My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive when he was a teenager in the German seaport of Kiel. It has since gone on to inform his musical output of ambient techno, which began when he moved to Berlin in 1996. Under the names View To The Future and Ethereal 77, he began performing acclaimed DJ sets around the clubs of Berlin. Before long, he began sending demo CD’s of his work to City Centre Offices, an electronica label based in the same city.

By 2001, he was signed to the label and he released his debut album under his own name in the same year. “Far Away Trains Passing By” was a critical smash and paved the way for his second record, 2003’s “A Strangely Isolated Place”. This was the record that put Shnauss on the map all over the world, with tracks of his appearing in video games, TV shows and films, exposing his work to a whole new audience. He spent the next four years touring and embracing any side project that came his way, even playing keyboards in the Manchester indie band Longview for a spell before releasing his third record “Goodbye” in 2007.

Since then, Shnauss has been one of the key names in German electronica. He signed to Domino Records, one of the world’s most influential labels, has headlined several music festivals and even joined the legendary German krautrock pioneers Tangerine Dream in 2014. He’s an artist just as acclaimed by the greats of the past as he is by the pioneers of the future, and we need as many artists like that as we can get. For that, he comes highly recommended.

Live reviews

Ulrich Schnauss has been a favorite producer of mine for a long time. He is popular for reworking classic songs by bands like Slowdive and Mojave 3, and other dream pop, shoegaze, electronic and ambient acts. Ulrich's sound is formed around synthesizers, samplers, and other computer equipment.

He creates hazy, dreamy walls of sound and spacey, computerized bleeps and beats. Ulrich Schnauss live sound is even more incredible. The sound of those ambient swells, the reverberated vocals, and the loud pulsing drum beats add an almost spiritual level to the music when played live. The volume is high, the energy is great, but most of all, Ulrich Schnauss' music as an ethereal, nostalgia inducing, dreamy feel that is almost a rarity in music these days.

With roots in UK's ambient scene from the 1990s, Ulrich really knows how to create other worldly, and down right beautiful sounds just as well as other great ambient producers, like Brian Eno. As his set continued, Ulrich began to create a world with the samples and loops he had been using. Recurring elements began to pop up, and the production was almost playful. Ulrich Schnauss has truly transcended simple song writing and has created something that can be both listened to and experienced; a package that is hard not to enjoy if you are a die hard music lover.

Good show, Thekla is a great venue with the added novelty of being on a barge nightclub!! Show was slow starting with lots of "build up" music. Also when Schnauss was speaking to the crowd, no-one at the back could hear a word he was saying! Unfortunately some tunes sounded sub quality due to the Thekla sound engineer who didn't seem to know what she was doing! Some of the bassier tracks ended up sounding way too "bright" and tinny due to the treble being too high. I think even Schnauss was annoyed at one point, there was lots of motioning to the engineer and finger pointing. Visual graphics were good. Quite a short show though and perhaps a bit too heavy on the chillout stuff for me. Still a good gig though.

I can and probably easily run out of superbatives for this live show by Ulrich. This was a two hour(?) tour de force with probably the best live sound I've heard at a gig for ages. The crystal clear sound and bone shaking bass were out of this world! Great selection of tunes and a superb light and visual show from Nat who tours with Ulrich and delivers the backdrops to Ulrich's amazing sounds. If Ulrich Schnauss is touring near you in 2017, do not miss him!

If you get the chance go and see Ulrich. Best 2 hours I've had in ages. Non stop assault on the visual and hearing senses. Think of kraftwerk, jean Michelle jarre and Phillip glasse's koyaanisqatsi all rolled into one..

Ulrich was unassuming and himself. I loved him for that. Nat Urazmetova Visuals took your breath away

Lovely venue, so intimate, just staff could be more helpful. Gig was fabulous, great Groupon people. Ienjoyed Binbit very much. Great stuff. But Ulrich stole the show. Loved the visuals. Thank you.

Ulrich Schnauss presents ‘Now is a Timeless Present’, a career-spanning retrospective encompassing key works from the past two decades. The German electronic composer will be selecting fundamental music from his back catalogue, much of which has not been performed live before.

At once uplifting and otherworldly, the music of Ulrich Schnauss combines multi-layered synthesizers with beats and ethereal vocals, serving as an aural escape route from the trappings of reality. Born in Kiel in 1977, Schnauss developed a love of electronic music from a young age. He explains, ‘I’ve always used making and listening to music as a way to escape – putting on headphones is a way to leave reality behind for a while, reminding yourself why it still makes sense to carry on.’ Inspired by the alternative guitar bands of the late 80s and early 90s as well as Acid House and early electronica, Schnauss began developing his own distinct sonic palette. Melding delicate dream-pop sensibilities with ecstatic electronic excess and defying the constraints of traditional music genre boundaries.

After a move to Berlin in the late 90s, Schnauss felt confident enough to employ a more freeform approach and began recording ‘little electronica pieces’, culminating in the first album released under his own name, 2001s 'Far Away Trains Passing By'. Four further studio albums have followed: ‘A Strangely Isolated Place’ (2003), ‘Goodbye’ (2007), ‘A Long Way to Fall’ (2013) and ‘No Further Ahead Than Today’ (2016). However, Schnauss has continued to produce and release music under various pseudonyms and in collaboration with other artists. He’s a prolific remixer and a member of the last Tangerine Dream line up picked by the late Edgar Frost.  

After an initial struggle to perform the unique, interchanging nuances of his compositions live, Schnauss’s discovery of Ableton software has enabled him to build new arrangements on the spot, lending diversity and distinction to each performance. ‘I can also react to the atmosphere of the room,’ he explains, ‘sometimes playing more ambient; sometimes more rhythm-orientated versions of the songs.’

Joining Ulrich Schnauss on stage is his long-term collaborator, London-based visual artist Nat Urazmetova. In her live visuals the organic and synthesised, amorphous and elusive, fluid and uncanny coalesce, mutate and continuously evolve in the free-flow of improvisation. Through shifting the accustomed modes of perception, the visual performance threads the different narratives of seeing, sensing and relating to the sonic counterpart’

SAN FRANCISCO BALLET ANNOUNCES DEBUT TOUR TO TORONTO, OPENING THE NATIONAL BALLET OF CANADA’S 2020/21 SEASON, NOVEMBER 11 – 15, 2020

SAN FRANCISCO, February 13, 2020—San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet) is presented by The National Ballet of Canada under Artistic Director Karen Kain at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto, Ontario , marking the Company’s premiere performances in Canada under the direction of Artistic Director and Principal Choreographer Helgi Tomasson and the opening of The National Ballet of Canada’s 2020/21 season, November 11 –15, 2020 .  SF Ballet will present Justin Peck’s Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes , Wheeldon’s Bound To , and Alexei Ratmansky’s The Seasons throughout the tour.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMMING Tony Award-winning Justin Peck’s Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes sets fifteen male and one female dancers to Aaron Copland’s iconic score and departs from the cowboy narrative of Agnes de Mille’s original Rodeo from 1942. Peck created Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes in 2015 for New York City Ballet, where he has been choreographer in residence since 2014. Lighting designs by Brandon Stirling Baker and costume designs by Reid Bartelme, Harriet Jung, and Justin Peck suggest mid-century America in the open plains.

Christopher Wheeldon ’s Bound To , his tenth work for SF Ballet, premiered during the Company’s 2018 Unbound: A Festival of New Works. A ballet that observes technology’s influence on 21 st -century communication, Bound To is set to singer-songwriter Keaton Henson’s music , with scenic and costume designs by Jean-Marc Puissant , projection designs by Alexander V. Nichols , and lighting designs by James F. Ingalls. Wheeldon, who won the 2015 Tony Award for “Best Choreography” for his Broadway hit An American in Paris , choreographed Bound To in flat shoes for the first time in his balletic career.

Alexei Ratmansky’s The Seasons , a co-commission between SF Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, will receive its West Coast premiere with SF Ballet on March 26, 2020 in San Francisco, before touring to Toronto in the fall. Set to Alexander Glazunov’s score of the same name, The Seasons is Ratmansky’s recreation of Marius Petipa’s ballet from 1900, retaining the original character names—Bacchante, The Faun, The Swallow, and more—yet setting the ballet to original chorography. The Seasons includes costume designs by Robert Perdziola and lighting designs by Mark Stanley .

ABOUT HELGI TOMASSON Helgi Tomasson, one of the most venerated classical dancers of his generation, embarks on his 35 th season with San Francisco Ballet in 2020 and is the longest-serving sole artistic director of a major ballet company. Born in Iceland, he danced with Harkness Ballet, The Joffrey Ballet, and New York City Ballet, where he distinguished himself as a dancer of technical purity, musicality, and intelligence. Tomasson assumed leadership of SF Ballet in 1985. Under his direction, SF Ballet has become a company widely recognized as one of the finest in the world. Tomasson has balanced devotion to the classics with an emphasis on new works, cultivating frequent collaborations and commissions with choreographers such as William Forsythe, Christopher Wheeldon, Alexei Ratmansky, Cathy Marston, and Mark Morris, among many others. He has choreographed more than 50 works for the Company, including full-length productions of Swan Lake , The Sleeping Beauty , Romeo & Juliet (taped for Lincoln Center at the Movies’ Great American Dance ), Giselle , and Nutcracker (taped for PBS’s Great Performances ). He conceptualized the 1995 UNited We Dance festival, in which SF Ballet hosted 12 international companies; the 2008 New Works Festival, which included 10 world premieres by 10 acclaimed choreographers; and the 2018 Unbound: A Festival of New Works. Tomasson has also connected SF Ballet to the world, through co-commissions with American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet, and Dutch National Ballet; and major tours to Paris, London, New York City, China, and his native Iceland.
