Experts share advice on how to find and book a reliable tour guide

Q: We’re stopping in Casablanca for one day on an upcoming cruise. How can I find a reliable local guide? I’ve found several sites promoting local guides, but I don’t know whether any of them are trustworthy. — Edith G., Laurel, Md.

A: A quick Google search will turn up the major tour companies operating in a city — or the ones paying for ads and searching juice — but you’re looking for the right guide to transform your understanding of a new place and avoid tourist traps.

This has become even more challenging as third-party companies and unauthorized guides have proliferated in tourism hot spots, scooping up tickets and driving up prices. Travel is already complicated; a guide should make it easier.

I’ve found plenty of reliable tour guides through social media and Airbnb Experiences. Before a trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, I went down rabbit holes on Instagram, looking at local food influencers and tour companies. Along the way I ended up on the account of Lily Palma, a guide who founded Zapotec Travel by Lily. We coordinated a custom experience over WhatsApp, I sent a deposit in advance and paid for the rest in person, and had a magical time with one of her guides.

Using Airbnb Experiences required far less trawling. For food tours on a trip to Southeast Asia, I looked for local guides and strong reviews in Phuket, Thailand, and Vietnam and was delighted with the outcomes. In Bangkok, I took a risk on a new tour that looked unique but had no reviews; it paid off, and I had a spectacular time learning to cook with Prawit “Wit” Chankasem and his mom, Maew, at their coconut farm.

I was curious what other travel professionals do, so I reached out to some hotel concierges, travel planners and tour guides for their advice. Multiple industry insiders warned against using mass market sites like Viator or Tripadvisor — which aren’t tour operators themselves but search aggregators.

“The challenge with some those big-box operators is that it is hard for them to vet every experience provider and so there’s a lack of consistency,” said Annie Sim, founder and CEO (chief eating officer) of the Table Less Traveled.

“We recently had a guest who booked through a big website,” said Sue Yoon, VIP concierge supervisor at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel in Vancouver, Canada. “They prepaid and everything and the driver never showed up.”

Yoon says her hotel always opts for local guides they’ve personally vetted and recommends travelers always ask their hotel for input — even if the traveler has already booked something. Many will be happy to double-check your pick. In your case, you could ask your cruise concierge.

Katie Parla, a tour guide in Rome and cookbook author, says to seek out locals who specialize in a field that interests you. If you’re more into food than museums, search for a food historian or a food writer in town who may do tours on the side. Look for expert titles in your guide searches. “Certified guide” doesn’t tell you as much as “art historian” or “former chef.”

Aaron Millar, a British travel writer and host of the “Armchair Explorer” podcast, said some of his best experiences were with people who were experts in their field, including a biologist in Costa Rica and a paleontologist in Utah.

“You’ll get next-level insight, but also passion,” Millar said in an email.

You can also skip the search yourself and turn to a well-established travel adviser or planner to help coordinate a custom trip with one of their preferred guides.

Such companies tend to have decadeslong relationships with independent guides and can vouch for their services, says Haisley Smith, vice president of product development at Internova Travel. They’ll be able to handpick the right guide for your travel style, “for example, one who specializes in food or architecture or history or maybe that is good with families,” Smith added in an email, recommending you try Abercrombie & Kent’s Morocco office.

It usually won’t cost you more to go through a professional. However, Clio Morichini, head of travel and events for Italy Segreta, a magazine and travel planning company, says you can usually expect a higher price point with a locally based or boutique operation versus ones you might find on Viator. But you get what you pay for, Morichini says, as they’re more likely to have vetted their guides several times before — not only to be qualified, but entertaining.

Lastly, Seda Meral, director of the front office for the Hotel Nikko San Francisco, recommends crowdsourcing information through Facebook travel groups or Reddit, or going to a city’s tourism office. She plans to check in with London’s to find tours for her upcoming trip to the United Kingdom.

Compton writes for The Washington Post.

Imagine Dragons Plan Summer Tour for New Album, ‘Loom’

By Kory Grow

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, Rolling Stone may receive an affiliate commission.

Now that Dan Reynolds has shown off his Indiana Jones–like ability to escape boobytrapped ancient ruins — all without the aid of socks — in Imagine Dragons’ “Eyes Closed” video, the group will show that it can tour with its eyes closed as veterans of the road. The Imagine Dragons will kick off an arena tour this summer — tied to the release of their new nine-track album, Loom (out June 28) — and it will run through the fall.

Tickets will go on sale Friday. Various presales begin Tuesday. Full details are on the group’s website . There are also VIP packages including one with “a signed guitar played by a member of Imagine Dragons on stage that night.”

I have found that everyone has one thing in common, and that is a love of the country we have all set out to explore.”

Ralind Swartz story

“Group tours prove to be great travel options for many people – they offer a fun and convenient way to travel, with trusted tour leaders and the company of like-minded travellers. “They’re great fun,” says Angela, “You meet so many interesting people and have many opportunities to interact with the group. The other benefit is that you can separate yourself from the group too if you want some time alone.”

21 Places Worth Seeing on College Tours

Explore campus facilities and fixtures after you've gone on the official college tour.

It's critical for college applicants with clear academic interests to explore the building that houses their intended major.

If you're a soon-to-be college student, exploring a college campus in person can help you determine if a school is the right fit.

College admissions consultants, high school counselors, undergraduate admissions officers and parents of college-bound students recommend taking a school's official guided tour to see the institution's selling points.

Once the official presentation is over, it's important to take a self-guided tour, where you check out places that your guide didn't show you and encounter people you otherwise would not have met.

Here are 21 places on a college campus that applicants should consider exploring:

  • Facilities associated with your desired major
  • Places where students pursue hobbies
  • A student union or student center
  • A college dining hall
  • Religious and cultural institutions
  • The career center
  • Fraternity and sorority houses
  • The neighborhood, town or city surrounding the campus
  • Unique parts of the campus
  • Bulletin boards across the college campus
  • Lecture halls and classrooms
  • Student health facilities, including counseling centers
  • Collaborative workspaces and hubs for hands-on learning
  • Campus or municipal police department
  • Stadiums and gyms
  • Student housing options
  • College offices that provide logistical assistance
  • Outdoor spaces
  • Transportation amenities
  • School-affiliated publishers and bookstores

Facilities Associated With Your Desired Major

Martyne Lo Russo, a parent whose son earned a bachelor's degree in sports management from St. John's University in New York City, says that when her son was a college applicant, he looked for a school with a strong sports management program. So, when he toured St. John's as a prospective student, he visited its sports management department and met with the dean. Lo Russo advises college hopefuls to visit undergraduate academic departments for the college majors they are interested in.

Meaghan Arena, a higher education administrator who has held leadership roles at multiple schools, also says it's critical for college applicants with clear academic interests to explore the building that houses their intended major.

"Having a feel for the place you'll spend most of your time can help you know if you see yourself there over the next four years," Arena wrote in an email. "It can also help you to understand the average size of classes in your major and the availability of technology in the classrooms and labs."

Many experts advise science-oriented college hopefuls to visit a school's science research laboratories to learn about ongoing research at the school.

Places Where Students Pursue Hobbies

Amber Jin, founder of Get Into Ivy, a company that sells digital courses on how to apply to college, says applicants should visit the places on campus where they would spend the bulk of their leisure time if they were admitted. For instance, someone passionate about theater should visit a college's performing arts facilities, she says.

Meg Caddeau, a college admissions counselor at the IvyWise admissions consulting firm and a former associate dean at Princeton University and Amherst College , says it's important for college hopefuls to see the places on a college campus where students relax and have fun, including lounge areas and music practice rooms.

Experts note that some schools have impressive museums and art galleries, which if present, are worth visiting. Spaces connected to labor-intensive student organizations, such as campus newspapers, are also potentially interesting, experts say.

A Student Union or Student Center

"So much learning happens outside of the walls of the classroom," Deborah Cohan, a sociology professor at the University of South Carolina—Beaufort , wrote in an email. "The student center might be referred to as the living room of the campus. Once at these centers, students can see the sort of programming that is offered and the sort of public figures invited to campus."

A College Dining Hall

Michelle Mullooly, director of admissions at The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York, says college applicants should be sure to eat a meal at a campus dining hall.

"College dining halls are where students relax, recharge and socialize," Mullooly wrote via email.

Religious and Cultural Institutions

Jin says college applicants who have a strong religious, racial or ethnic identity can benefit from visiting places on campus that cater to people with a shared background. For instance, a college applicant who is an ethnic minority might want to visit a minority student association, and a religiously affiliated college applicant might want to visit a student group connected to his or her faith.

Josef Blumenfeld, a Boston-based parent, says that during his daughters' college tours, his family made a point of stopping at the campus Hillel either in-person or virtually to inquire about how hospitable a college was for Jewish people like themselves.

"Interestingly, Hillel as an organization stepped up to provide much more information about campus security and anti-Semitism," Blumenfeld wrote in an email.

Black students may want to make a pit stop at a school's Black Student Union, experts say. Kat Gill, whose biracial daughter graduated from Harvard University in 2020, noted that her daughter made sure to stop by locations where Black students congregated on school campuses during her college search, and she also struck up conversations with Black students at the colleges she was considering.

Gill suggests that LGBTQ students take a similar approach to gauge whether a school's culture is tolerant and friendly.

Minority college applicants can get valuable information from current students in their minority group, Gill says. "It gives you a good idea of how things are on campus."

The Career Center

Joe Orsolini, president of College Aid Planners, a company that helps families save and pay for college, says a college tour is not complete without a visit to the career center.

"It may not be the 'sexy' part of the college tour, but it is important to see what companies are interviewing on campus," Orsolini wrote in an email. "This will give you an indication of your prospects for who is hiring that school's graduates."

How to Find the Right College Tour Group

Fraternity and Sorority Houses

Experts say that if a college has an active Greek scene and numerous sororities and fraternities, it would be a mistake to not visit a fraternity or sorority house.

"Walk or drive by the frats and sororities to see what they look like," Caddeau suggests. "Do a bit of online investigating as well. Stats on the percentage of undergrads who are involved in Greek life should be available. If Greek life dominates the social scene, it could be helpful to ask about alternatives to Greek life social events."

The Neighborhood, Town or City Surrounding the Campus

Brooke Fincke, director of college counseling at Chapel Hill—Chauncy Hall, a private school in Massachusetts, says college students generally take occasional trips off campus. A comprehensive college tour should include sightseeing in the communities around campus, she says.

Pierre Huguet, CEO of the H&C Education consulting firm, suggests that prospective undergraduates think about whether they'd prefer to attend an urban school .

"If the activities that give meaning to your life are hiking, canoeing, and fishing, you probably won’t want to go to college in an urban setting," he explained in an email. "On the other hand, if you’re all about visiting museums and writing a food blog, a school in New York or Chicago may be perfect for you."

Experts on college affordability also say that seeing the community around a college and the prices charged at local restaurants and stores can give college hopefuls a sense of how high living expenses would be at that particular college.

Unique Parts of the Campus

A college or university may have multiple statues or plaques that commemorate important events in the school's history, or it may have particularly noteworthy architecture. Experts say prospective students should try to see the most iconic and unusual features of a college campus, since those details can provide clues about the student experience.

Bulletin Boards Across the Campus

Fincke advises college applicants to read the bulletin board flyers posted on a college campus, since these flyers can indicate how vibrant student life is on the campus. She suggests that college applicants take photos of these bulletin boards to help them remember all the activities and clubs that were mentioned on them.

Christine Chu, a college admissions counselor at IvyWise and a former assistant director of undergraduate admissions at Yale University and Georgetown University , says prospective students can benefit from attending college events.

Lecture Halls and Classrooms

Experts say college applicants should ask to observe an undergraduate course in a subject of interest during their college tours. It's important for college applicants to gauge whether a college's teaching style matches their learning style.

"For students visiting campuses during the academic year, I would strongly encourage them to sit in on a lecture as well as a seminar if possible," Chu wrote in an email. "Listening in on classroom discussions can illuminate the intellectual vitality of a school and the student body."

"More than a home to book stacks and special collections, which alone reveal so much about the life of the mind of a university, libraries can be mini hubs," Chu explains. "Students gather around conference tables to collaborate on projects or study together, and the coffee spot is often filled with students catching up with friends. And sometimes, being ensconced in a well-loved leather armchair in a quiet nook simply embodies one of the quintessential moments of being a college student."

Student Health Facilities, Including Counseling Centers

Experts note that it is common for college students to experience mental health challenges. Access to therapy is essential, especially for students who have been diagnosed with a chronic mental illness like bipolar disorder.

The quality of the student health center is worth investigating, according to college experts. "It’s important to see the health center and understand the university’s approach to health care and what services are provided," Kerr Ramsay III, who has a doctorate in higher education leadership and serves as senior vice president for undergraduate admission at High Point University in North Carolina, wrote in an email.

Collaborative Workspaces and Hubs for Hands-On Learning

Ramsay recommends going to spots where students brainstorm with one another. " Ask to see spaces that support your desire to work in teams and complete projects together outside of class," he suggests.

Another type of location worth checking out is a space where students get to apply the lessons they learned in class, he says, noting that his school offers a production studio and a trading room with a live stock ticker.

Campus or Municipal Police Department

Prospective college students who are worried about security can stop by the campus police headquarters or the local police agency to ask about crime in the area and inquire about safety measures, according to experts.

Stadiums and Gyms

Chu notes that because college and university sports events bring so many people associated with a school to a single spot, visiting a stadium at one of those times is ideal, since "you can literally feel the school spirit pulsating through the stands."

Laurie Kopp Weingarten, president of One-Stop College Counseling in New Jersey, recommends visiting workout spaces, since staying in shape is a high priority for many potential college students.

Student Housing Options

"I would advise prospective students to visit the dormitories because these are important to campus life," Janet Ruth Heller, a former university faculty member who taught at multiple academic institutions, wrote in an email. "Are the rooms well equipped? How is the wi-fi? Does the room have air conditioning? Are there elevators for multi-story dormitories? Do students need to bring their own rugs, sheets, blankets, extra lights, etc.?"

Experts suggest touring off-campus apartments where the cost is less than the expense of a dorm room, or for situations where access to school-controlled housing isn't guaranteed for all four years of college.

College Offices That Provide Logistical Assistance

Shymika Stephenson-Davison, owner and lead consultant at the PreCollege Solutions consulting firm, says students who need financial aid should visit the financial aid office. Many colleges have support services that cater to both low-income and first-generation college students and that also assist students with disabilities, so students who could benefit from such assistance should be sure to stop by that office, Stephenson-Davison suggests.

James Lewis, president of the National Society of High School Scholars, encourages potential undergrads to visit a college's academic resource center, if it has one. In an email, he advised seeking answers to the following questions: “Do they have tutoring, and if so, what subjects? Is it face-to-face or virtual? By appointment only? Can you get one-on-one support for math, science, writing or any specific class you take?"

Outdoor Spaces

Alex Chip, founder of Top Score Education tutoring and test prep company, commented in an email that “having the escape and stress release of a beautiful garden or an invigorating hiking trail can offer a welcome respite from the pressures of the university experience.”

A college's outdoor amenities are particularly significant nowadays due to the coronavirus pandemic, says Patricia Roberts, chief operating officer of GiftofCollege.com, a company that helps people contribute to the college funds of their loved ones.

"Given the recent history with Covid and the need to pivot to outdoor spaces for socially-distant informal socializing or organized events, I strongly suggest prospective students ask about and examine dedicated outdoor spaces that can be utilized by students during all seasons," she wrote in an email. "This would give prospective students a sense of available options should indoor gatherings be subject to restriction again in the future."

Transportation Amenities

Allen Koh, founder and CEO of Cardinal Education consulting firm, notes that the availability of parking spots, trains and buses on campus is critical information to consider. "This will definitely help you choose in terms of how easy your commute will be from your home, apartment, or even within the city," he says.

School-Affiliated Publishers and Bookstores

"You may observe the level of importance the college places on knowledge production by looking at its press or publishing house," Koh says. "If there is one, try checking the university bookstore and look at the titles being released, especially in your own field. How advanced and productive they are in your chosen field will give you an idea of the kind of instruction you will receive from the school."

Jack Smith 'Hypothetical' Could Turn Trump Immunity Claim Against SCOTUS

S pecial Counsel Jack Smith 's team should present an extreme "hypothetical" argument against absolute immunity for presidents accused of crimes by suggesting it could be used to target Supreme Court judges, a legal expert has said.

Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance suggested that the government should argue that if Donald Trump cannot be prosecuted for alleged crimes committed in office, then what is to stop a sitting president from ordering the "assassination of Supreme Court justices who disagree with him" knowing they would not face jail for it.

Joyce made remarks ahead of the April 25 hearing in which the Supreme Court justices will hear arguments on whether the federal charges against Trump over his alleged criminal attempts to overturn the 2020 election results can be dismissed as the allegations relate to his time in the White House.

Trump has pleaded not guilty to four felony charges in relation to Smith's investigation into the events which led up to the January 6 Capitol attack, with the proceedings on hold pending the results of the absolute immunity defense appeal.

Writing in her Civil Discourse blog , Vance noted a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit previously dismissed Trump's lawyers' arguments that a president must first be convicted by the Senate before they can face criminal prosecution.

During a January hearing, Judge Florence Pan suggested that under these circumstances, a sitting president could order SEAL Team Six to assassinate a political rival, and then resign from office before being convicted by the Senate and therefore escape prosecution.

Vance said that Smith's team should now put forward a more "extreme version" of this argument on April 25 in relation to Supreme Court judges.

"The hypothetical, or 'hypo' as it's abbreviated in legalese, that I'm hoping the government will pose in argument is a more extreme version of the SEAL Team Six hypo we heard in the Court of Appeals, where a judge asked if Trump's theory would absolve him if he used the military to take out political opponents," Vance wrote.

"Why not take it a step further and tell the court that if Trump has the sort of broad immunity he claims he does, a president would be free to order the assassination of Supreme Court justices who disagree with him, and could not be prosecuted for doing that. Make the impact of Trump's argument unmistakable.

"The examples of conduct that would be permissible under Trump's view of immunity drive home how essential it is for the court to reject his appeal and send this case back on its way to trial," Vance added.

Trump's legal team has been contacted for comment via email.

V. James DeSimone, a Los-Angeles-based civil rights attorney, said that if the Supreme Court does rule that any president has continuing absolute criminal immunity , then it would be "inflicting a grievous blow" to its own legitimacy.

"The Court of Appeals for the District Columbia, when it ruled on this question of presidential immunity, already spelled out what a contradiction in terms it would mean for Trump to be immune from prosecution," DeSimone told Newsweek . "The logic of a timeless presidential immunity from criminal prosecution does not make any sense, and the average American can see that.

"It should not take a hypothetical example of a president ordering the assassination of his political opponent or even the assassination of Supreme Court justices for the justices themselves to see the inherent contradiction in giving unlimited power to the president," DeSimone added.

If the Supreme Court rules in favor of Trump and reverses the lower courts' decision, the federal case will be thrown out.

If the nation's highest court votes that Trump cannot cite absolute immunity, the case will return to Judge Tanya Chutkan , who froze proceedings pending the result of the immunity argument.

However, the start of any trial could still be several months away, with Chutkan previously assuring that Trump's legal team will be given months to prepare for the case once it returns to the court.

Other issues, such as jury selection, could also potentially provide major delays to the federal trial.

Trump, the presumptive 2024 Republican nominee, has long faced accusations he is purposely trying to delay the start of proceedings until after November's election.

If Trump beats President Joe Biden in November's election before the federal 2020 election obstruction trial has taken place, Trump could then order the Department of Justice to drop the case into him once he enters office.

Could the Union Victory at VW Set Off a Wave?

Some experts say the outcome at a plant in Chattanooga, Tenn., may be organized labor’s most significant advance in decades. But the road could get rockier.

  • Share full article

A man in a blue sweatshirt stands in front of a microphone by a roadway. A crowd of people are behind him holding union signs.

By Noam Scheiber

Noam Scheiber has covered labor unions since 2015.

By voting to join the United Automobile Workers, Volkswagen workers in Tennessee have given the union something it has never had: a factory-wide foothold at a major foreign automaker in the South.

The result, in an election that ended on Friday , will enable the union to bargain for better wages and benefits. Now the question is what difference it will make beyond the Volkswagen plant.

Labor experts said success at VW might position the union to replicate its showing at other auto manufacturers throughout the South, the least unionized region of the country. Some argued that the win could help set off a rise in union membership at other companies that exceeds the uptick of the past few years, when unions won elections at Starbucks and Amazon locations.

“It’s a big vote, symbolically and substantively,” said Jake Rosenfeld, a sociologist who studies labor at Washington University in St. Louis.

The next test for the U.A.W. will come in a vote in mid-May at a Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama.

In addition, at least 30 percent of workers have signed cards authorizing the U.A.W. to represent them at a Hyundai plant in Alabama and a Toyota plant in Missouri, according to the union . That is the minimum needed to force an election, though the union has yet to petition for one in either location.

“People only take action when they believe there is an alternative to the status quo that has a plausible chance of winning,” said Barry Eidlin, a sociologist at McGill University in Montreal.

Still, it’s unclear how far the campaign may spread beyond German manufacturers. Volkswagen and Mercedes have been relatively friendly to unions outside the United States, and a recent German law could prompt financial penalties against companies that crack down on union organizing.

Compared with previous elections in Chattanooga, Volkswagen’s pushback against the union was mild this time, according to workers. The company presented reasons it believed a union was unnecessary, including pay that is above average for the Chattanooga area, but said it left the decision to the workers.

Sam Fiorani, vice president of global vehicle forecasting at the research firm AutoForecast Solutions, predicted that most Japanese and South Korean manufacturers with plants in the South would be more difficult targets for the U.A.W. because they have worked hard to develop a close relationship with workers or have butted heads with unions in their home country, or both.

The Chattanooga vote could also lead to a broader political battle over unionization within the region. Business and political leaders in the South say a greater union presence could threaten their states’ economic advantages and slow down job creation.

“If we become less competitive, why not do it in Detroit?” said Gerald McCormick, a Republican who was the Tennessee House majority leader when the U.A.W. first prompted a union vote at the Volkswagen plant in 2014.

Six Republican governors highlighted those concerns in a statement on Tuesday, which said that the union campaign was “driven by misinformation and scare tactics.” Opposition from state and local politicians helped defeat the union in a vote at a Nissan plant in Mississippi in 2017 and in elections at VW in Chattanooga in 2014 and 2019.

The U.A.W.’s political support for Democrats — the union endorsed President Biden’s re-election in January — could also be a vulnerability in such a fight. Isaac Meadows, a worker at the Volkswagen plant, said in an interview in February that the endorsement had led some co-workers to have second thoughts about the union, but that he had advised them that “the political landscape changes every four to eight years and doesn’t directly affect us.”

Even so, a change in presidential administrations could bring a more skeptical National Labor Relations Board, which presides over union elections and enforces labor law and could make it more difficult for the union to win at other plants.

Worker advocates and union organizers acknowledged that the win in Chattanooga could trigger a strong response. “You have to imagine the backlash,” said Erica Smiley, executive director of Jobs With Justice, which helps workers seeking to unionize and bargain collectively. “My hope is that enough people understand both within the U.A.W. and within the union world writ large that you have to defend the union election.”

Organizers also conceded that any momentum generated by the union victory in Chattanooga could be muted until workers there win a contract that brings concrete gains, a process that can take years.

It has been two years since Amazon workers at a Staten Island warehouse became the first to win a union election at the company in the United States, and they have yet to begin bargaining as the company challenges the victory. The lack of progress toward a contract appears to have complicated organizing efforts at other Amazon sites.

But the Volkswagen employees in Chattanooga have advantages that the Amazon workers lack. Unlike the Amazon Labor Union, their union is well established and can invest millions of dollars in staff and legal work to help bargain a contract. And Volkswagen appears more willing than Amazon to bargain, partly because of its labor ties in Germany.

“If workers in Chattanooga get a great contract, a big raise, better health benefits, and then the same thing at Mercedes, there will be a lot more good opportunities to win good contracts in short order,” said Madeline Janis, co-executive director of Jobs to Move America, a group that seeks to create good jobs in clean technology industries.

Ms. Janis, whose group is involved in unionizing factory workers in the South, said the momentum could travel beyond the auto industry to other manufacturers because employees at different companies in the region often know one another and discuss these issues. “Their brothers and sisters and spouses are working at other plants,” she said. “It will be all over social media.”

And some experts said that a rise in unionization at factories could spread to other types of jobs. “The enthusiasm is contagious across sectors,” said David Pryzbylski, a lawyer at Barnes & Thornburg who represents employers. “People look at it and say, ‘Hey, I think there’s something here. Maybe I should be interested in it, too.’”

Several workers echoed the point, saying they had drawn encouragement from labor actions in other industries over the past few years. Successful campaigns in Hollywood and at companies like Starbucks and Apple “have been a major boon for us,” said Emma Geiger, a worker at Sega of America who helped unionize the video game maker last year. “Especially in the perception of unions on the whole as not something to be feared, but to be embraced.”

Overall, nearly 70 percent of Americans say they support unions, according to Gallup , up from about 50 percent a decade and a half ago. After dropping for several years, the number of union members increased by nearly 280,000 in 2022 and by about half that amount last year, though the percentage of workers in unions dropped slightly because even more people entered the work force. Filings for union elections were up 35 percent in the six months ending in March compared with the same period one year earlier, according to the National Labor Relations Board.

During the mid-1930s, union membership grew by several hundred thousand for three straight years, then jumped by roughly three million in 1937, most of it after the U.A.W. organized General Motors.

Another expansion on this scale is unlikely given changes in the economy, including the shift away from manufacturing as a source of jobs. But Michael Lotito, a lawyer at Littler Mendelson, which represents employers, said the past few years had produced “a lot of kindling” that could make it easier for a fire of sorts to spread.

Citing workers’ frustrations over the pandemic and return-to-office policies, which they have amplified on social media, he said that “from a management perspective, it’s of concern.”

Noam Scheiber is a Chicago-based reporter who covers workers and the workplace. He spent nearly 15 years at The New Republic, where he covered economic policy and three presidential campaigns. He is the author of “The Escape Artists.” More about Noam Scheiber

Each lineup consists of four starters and two bench players that can be rotated after each round. Adding to the challenge is that every golfer can be used only three times per each of four Segments.

Aside from the experts below, Golfbet Insider Rob Bolton breaks down the field at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans in this week's edition of Power Rankings .

Betting picks

WILL GRAY (Lead, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winners: Nick Taylor/Adam Hadwin (+2800) – Two proven TOUR winners that will be looking to channel some good Presidents Cup vibes. I remain impressed with Taylor’s grasp of clutch moments and think these two could have the right resolve in crunch time.
  • Top 10: Taylor Moore/Matthew NeSmith (+300) – An eye-catching price on a pair that finished T4 here each of the last two years and now has double the margin for error to still cash a placement bet.
  • Longshot: Dylan Wu/Justin Lower (+6600) – Lower is someone that I think is trending toward a breakthrough, including a T4 finish last week in Punta Cana while Wu has been largely solid this spring.
  • H2H: Taylor/Hadwin (-110) over Sepp Straka/Brice Garnett – Like Matt, I’m going to run it back with my winner’s pick in the head-to-head market as I’ll happily back the Canadians over a duo that has been more erratic in recent weeks, particularly Garnett outside of his Puerto Rico win.

BEN EVERILL (Senior writer, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winners: Schauffele/Cantlay (+450) – I’m not a fan of advocating these short odds but this smells of a few years ago where these two can play their way back into full confidence ahead of the rest of the season.
  • Top 10: Nicolai Højgaard/Rasmus Højgaard (+210) – One of three sets of brothers in the field this one brings firepower and winning gravitas from the DP World Tour. This is a preview for future Ryder Cups …
  • Longshots: Pierceson Coody/Parker Coody (+10000) – Let’s keep the brotherly love going. They have the teamwork side of things down pat and many a good judge from the lower leagues of golf suggest these two are stars in the making with clearly a good pedigree in the sport.
  • H2H: Højgaard/Højgaard (-110) over Matt Fitzpatrick/Alex Fitzpatrick – As good as Matt Fitzpatrick is, I’m still waiting to see more from Alex. He was awesome at The Open Championship last year but struggled a bit in this event leaving me to trust the Højgaards.

CHRIS BREECE (Senior content manager, Golfbet)

  • Winners: Schauffele/Cantlay (+450) – It’s one of those weeks where I feel like overthinking things is a bad idea. Both players have shown they are making progress towards getting back to the top of their games. Both are also hungry for a win. With so many random pairings out there, I’m willing to take the short odds.
  • Top 10: Collin Morikawa/Kurt Kitayama (+115) – Morikawa has gotten things figured out. Though Kitayama hasn’t lived up to the standards of his Arnold Palmer Invitational win presented by Mastercard last year, he’s playing consistent golf right now with a Top 40 in nine of his 10 starts in 2024.
  • Longshot: Nick Hardy/Davis Riley (+5500) – The winners here last year. They’ve proven they love the team format and will find that spark again.
  • H2H: Taylor/Hadwin (-110) over Straka/Garnett – The pair finished second last year. Taylor has a win this year. Hadwin has two top-fives in his last six starts.

MATT DELVECCHIO (Social content manager, Fantasy & Betting)

  • Winners: Davis Thompson/Andrew Novak (+4500) – It’s hard to find a pairing where both players are in good form. Novak was red hot in February and Thompson has had solid showings late March through early April. I trust the two of these guys will be able to lean on each other's ball-striking and put up a ton of birdies.
  • Top 10: Corey Conners/Taylor Pendrith (+225) – Both of the Canadian pairings have a lot to like but I’ll lean Conners/Pendrith over Taylor/Hadwin.
  • Longshot: Garrick Higgo/Ryan Fox (+6600) – The hope is that Fox can motivate Higgo to put together some great scoring this week. Fox has obviously been great recently, it's Higgo who is the wild car. I trust the team format brings some good play out of him.

Biden needles Trump over his hair and 'Mar-a-Lago values' as he addresses union

"Folks, the choice is clear," the president said, going after his rival.

President Joe Biden on Wednesday needled rival Donald Trump, laying into the former president as he welcomed the North America's Building Trades Union's endorsement.

"You're the best in the world," Biden said while addressing the NABTU's legislative conference in Washington, D.C. "You know, you had my back in 2020 and because of you, I'm standing here as president of the United States of America. … Because of you, in 2024 we're going to make Donald Trump a loser again! Are you ready?"

"So, it's either Scranton values or Mar-a-Lago values," Biden went on to say, drawing a contrast between his background and Trump's as he repeated an economic argument rolled out during campaign stops in Pennsylvania last week. "These are competing visions of the economy at the heart of this election."

Polling shows that economic issues are top of mind for many voters in what is expected to be a close race, though surveys have found Trump getting more favorable marks than Biden on the economy.

The president doubled down on his differences with Trump later in his speech on Wednesday and said working-class voters are probably familiar with the kind of elites that Biden argued Trump represents.

MORE: A potential Trump-Biden contest could hinge on the economy. Here's how their plans differ.

"Folks, the choice is clear: Donald Trump's vision of America is one of revenge and retribution, a defeated former president who sees the world from Mar-a-Lago and bows down to billionaires, who looks down on American union workers," Biden said.

"Think about the guys you grew up with [that] you'd like to get into the corner and just give them a straight left," Biden said. "I'm not suggesting we hit the president."

Biden -- who has been hammered by Trump and Republicans over high inflation and cost of living issues -- said Trump repeatedly promised to focus on so-called infrastructure week when he was president but in four years "he never built a damn thing," compared with the Biden White House's successful push for new infrastructure investment.

PHOTO: President Joe Biden delivers remarks at the North American Building Trades Unions (NABTU) 2024 Legislative Conference at the Washington Hilton on April 24, 2024 in Washington, DC.

Biden also slammed his predecessor for Trump's alleged treatment, as a businessman, of contractors: "He didn't keep his word."

"The guy has never worked a day in working man's boots," he said of Trump.

Biden also sarcastically took shots at Trump's history of outlandish comments -- reversing a frequent attack from Trump on Biden's own well-known habit of verbal gaffes and misstatements.

"Donald Trump still thinks windmills cause cancer ," Biden said to laughter as he made the sign of the cross. "That's what he said. And by the way, remember when he was trying to deal with COVID, he suggested just inject a little bleach in your veins ? He missed it -- it all went to his hair. Look, I shouldn't have said that."

During one other moment, however, Biden apparently read aloud a stage direction to "pause" during his speech, presumably for applause. It was a familiar slip for the president, who looked momentarily confused while reading it before giving a large smile when he seemingly realized his mistake.

In the audience, many members wore T-shirts that read "Joe walks the line," with a depiction of the president wearing his signature aviator sunglasses.

NABTU President Sean McGarvey praised Biden in a statement on Wednesday announcing the union's endorsement, which adds to the list of labor groups backing Biden .

NABTU also endorsed Biden over Trump in the 2020 election. Trump has been supported by some other high-profile unions, including those representing Border Patrol agents and police.

"Joe Biden has proven to be the perfect leader at the perfect time for this country and the working men and women who have built it," McGarvey said in his statement.

He said NABTU, a coalition of unions that boasts 3 million members, plans to mobilize its members to vote for Biden in the fall.

DETROIT (AP) — The NFL draft has taken the show on the road for a decade, giving cities around the country a chance to be in the spotlight.

Detroit is on the clock.

The Motor City, which was once one of the nation’s largest and most powerful cities, has bounced back from filing for bankruptcy in 2013.

Fans driving and flying into town from the league’s other 31 teams will see signs of progress from the symbolic to the significant.

AP AUDIO: NFL draft has been on tour for a decade and the next stop is Detroit, giving it a shot in spotlight.

AP correspondent Mike Hempen reports.

DETROIT is spelled out, each letter standing 10 feet off an embankment alongside a freeway between the airport and downtown, in an art installation that made its debut earlier this month.

A few miles away, the long-abandoned Michigan Central Station has undergone a renovation funded by Ford Motor Co. to transform the 18-story, 113-year-old train depot from an eyesore into a gem.

In the heart of downtown, where the NFL draft will begin Thursday night, a 685-foot-high tower represents the largest construction project in the city in more than a half-century as it rises from the site of the former Hudson’s department store.

With more than 50 million viewers and an expected 400,000 visitors over the three-day event, there will be a chance to change the conversation about the city.

Lions President Rod Wood pitched the city as a draft destination in 2016 and teamed up with the Detroit Sports Commission a year later to submit the formal bid to land the NFL’s annual event that gives fans from each team a jolt of hope.

The Lions and the local sports commission also partnered with Visit Detroit, Dan Gilbert’s real-estate company, Bedrock, and the Detroit Police Department to make the most of the opportunity.

“The draft here in Detroit is going to make a big step for us in making that old image go away and people having the new image of the city,” Gilbert told The Associated Press. “We’re going to be able to showcase Detroit like never before.”

That’s part of the NFL’s plan, and it has led to 20-plus cities vying for a future draft. Green Bay will host next year’s draft.

After the league had its last draft in New York a decade ago, it envisioned giving cities — particularly those in colder climates that may not host a future Super Bowl — a chance to have a signature event that would have a lot of benefits, including an economic impact.

Chicago was the first tour stop in 2015 and it generated $81 million for the community. Kansas City had it last year, sparking $164 million in economic impact.

“Another opportunity for our franchise and our city and just for the world to kind of migrate to downtown Detroit,” said Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has turned around a franchise that is coming off its best season since winning the 1957 NFL title. “I expect it to be pretty packed. I’m excited for all the businesses.”

Detroit’s draft is expected to bring in at least $160 million, giving small businesses a boost from fans flocking in and around Campus Martius Park.

One longtime business is looking forward to more than just an increase in foot traffic.

Lauren Stovall, the business lead at Hot Sam’s, and two others representing the 103-year-old men’s clothing store and tailor shop will be onstage during the draft’s final day Saturday.

“There’s a perception of Detroit that comes from people who actually have not been here,” Stovall said. “What’s so great is when people actually come to Detroit, they are blown away, because Detroit is not what they might have thought.”

There are new hotels, high-end and trendy restaurants and bars along with a skyscraper nearing completion. Challenges continue to exist in some neighborhoods as the city continues to demolish abandoned houses, including more than 25,000 over the past 10 years. Crime has been trending down and homicides are the lowest since 1966.

“We’re not going to lose our balance patting ourselves on the back,” Detroit Police Chief James White said.

Hundreds of uniformed and plainclothes officers from Detroit, county, state and federal agencies will patrol the greater downtown area. White said all the city’s police officers will work shifts during the draft, some downtown, others in neighborhoods.

Bomb-sniffing dogs and other K-9 teams will be flown into Detroit by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which also has pledged to have its tactical team on standby. Intelligence agents are monitoring social media for any threats.

Mayor Mike Duggan devoted some time during his annual State of the City address Wednesday to talk about the importance of the draft turning a lot of eyes on Detroit. Visitors for the draft are “going to see a very different city,” the mayor promised.

“We have a chance to reintroduce Detroit to America,” Duggan said.

Associated Press writers Corey Williams and Mike Householder contributed to this report.
