Why should you book a vacation package to Greece?

If you intend to visit in the near future, it's well worth considering Greece vacation packages. By booking hotels, flights and vehicle rentals together, you can make seeing the Acropolis or relaxing on secluded island beaches much cheaper.

And with a little extra cash, you can stock up on retsina or Greek pottery, add an extra round of golf to your schedule or splash out on gourmet meals. So why not explore our Greece travel deals?

When should you book a vacation package to Greece?

During the peak summer months, Greece becomes one of the busiest tourist destinations in the world, with over 22 million arrivals every year. So if you want to find a budget Greece package vacation, try to avoid the period between June and September.

Instead, it makes sense to aim for late spring or the fall. April and June should ensure fine weather, and October is warm as well. And with mild winter temperatures an Athens sightseeing break in December or January can also be very enjoyable.

Where should you stay in Greece during your vacation?

For any vacation type in greece:.

Rhodes' Cathrin Hotel is a great candidate for anyone's vacation accommodation. Situated on Faliraki's main street, it's 9 minutes walk from the beach and boasts gyms, pools and plenty of parking. Taxis from Rhodes Airport take just 18 minutes to get there, too.

If you need a solid all-rounder in Athens, the Athens Marriott fits the bill. Located near the port, you can get into town easily but also escape to the islands if the weather is too warm. It's around 40 minutes by road from Athens International Airport.

For family vacations in Greece:

Situated on Corfu, the Aquis Pelekas Beach Hotel is perfect for families who need access to a pristine beach, and also offers a lively kids' club. Shuttle bus or road transfers from the airport take around 25 minutes.

The Mirabelle Hotel on Zakynthos is more like a mini-Greek village than a standard hotel, but comes with child-friendly pools and large gardens that kids will love. It's also just a couple of miles from Zakynthos Airport.

For romantic vacations in Greece:

With private bungalows and beautiful views, the Dessolle Mirabello vacation village in Agios Nikolaos is one of Crete's most romantic refuges, with great hiking and plenty to do on site. It's around 90 minutes' drive from Heraklion airport.

Close to the Acropolis and the quaint Plaka neighborhood, the Acropolis Select is a stylish spot with comfort to spare (and free drinks for all arrivals). Traveling from the airport is simple, as Syngrou-Fix metro station is 200 meters away.

For luxury vacations in Greece:

Built in a lavish ancient Greek style, Tharroe of Mykonos commands gorgeous sea views, has great access to the island's old town, and is only 2 miles from Mykonos Airport.

The Apostolata Island Resort on Kefalonia is a luxury spa retreat built onto a steep hillside on the island's southern coast. If you want total relaxation, nowhere comes close. Taxis from the airport should take about 30 minutes.

For budget vacations in Greece:

If you want an affordable break on the island of Rhodes, Kalithea Sun & Sky is ideal. Set in an attractive pine forest, it's just a few hundred meters from the sea, and the airport is only 15 miles away.

Affordable and comfortable, the Amazones Villas in Malia place vacationers in one of Crete's liveliest resorts, but are set aside from the center of town, so peace and quiet is assured. Shuttles run from Heraklion to Malia and the transfer won't take over an hour.

Explore the ancient capital of Athens

Often dubbed the cradle of Western civilisation, Athens was arguably the most influential city of ancient times. Contemporary meets antique in a city both drenched in world history and brimming with a modernity. You’ll discover thermal lakes, buzzing beachside neighborhoods and some of the world’s oldest ruins.

Visit the ancient Olympic site in Olympia

The birthplace of the Olympic Games, Olympia first became known to the world in 776 BC, when the very first games were held. Visit this world-famous ancient site that was also a holy place of worship for Zeus, the Greek god, surrounded by lush forestry in a rolling valley.

See the ruins of the Temple of Apollo

Reachable by a day trip from Athens, the Temple of Apollo at Delphi was rebuilt numerous times before settling into the historic site it inhabits today. Marvel at the remaining sandstone columns and decayed limestone that remind us of the past it endured over many thousands of years.

Dine 'Meze Style' in Psyri, Athens

Most travel guides will have you visiting Plaka for Greek food and nightlife, but authentic eateries are best found in the nearby neighborhood of Psiri. Between no-frills bars and dusty antique shops, you will find traditional mezze-style eateries and a boutique energy that pays tribute to Greece’s culinary heritage.

Visit Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Meteora

One of Greece’s most popular tourist attractions, it’s easy to see why so many flock to the spectacular rock formations of Meteora. Marvel at talents of both man and Mother Nature at the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Byzantine monasteries that float around the summits.

Our top 5 things to do in Greece

Food and history form the basis of Greek culture and play a big role in all our trips to Greece. With Trafalgar, we'll showcase the best this country has to offer from sun up to dreamy sundown.

Acropolis Museum

The Acropolis Museum is found at the foot of the western world’s most important ancient site. Unpeel layers of history as you wander the halls of the past and gaze up at the dazzling site itself through glass walls. Allow yourself at least half a day to take in the enormity of this museum.

Remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace

Tours in Greece are scarcely complete without a visit to this iconic archeological site, where you will find the remains of Agamemnon's Royal Palace, one of the world’s best-preserved fortresses. Glance up and admire unrivalled panoramic views of the countryside, once the Greek civilisation’s major military centres.

Athens War Museum

Opening its doors in 1975, the Athens War Museum documents the country’s past conflicts and military artefacts. In honor of those who fought for Greece’s freedom, the museum showcases four grand floors of past-to-present history. History enthusiasts will find no shortage of awe within these walls.

Best museums in Greece

Though often visited for Greece island hopping, the enchantment of this Mediterranean jewel extends beyond the sapphire waters. With Trafalgar, you’ll venture under the layers of Greek culture by visiting its many fascinating museums.

Standing its ground as one of Greece’s most famous main meals, moussaka is a wholesome and delectable combination of eggplant, ground meat, onion and béchamel sauce. Try this dish a few times during your visit; there are family variations that get passed through generations.

Souvlaki is street food at its very best. A simple preparation of skewered meats and vegetables, it’s the flavoring that makes this snack a pride of the nation. For the most authentic souvlaki, sample if from a street vendor wrapped up with condiments, salad and thick hot chips.

Kolokythokeftedes

The small fried balls of kolokythokeftedes can most aptly be compared to zucchini fritters with fetta cheese. Often ordered in summer with a side of tzatziki, these delicious bites are a great starter to any meal. Learn from the locals and snack on kolokythokeftedes alongside a glass of wine in the warm afternoon sun.

Best food in Greece

From an array of antipasto dips like taramasalata and tzatziki, to heavier main courses of grilled meats and fresh fish, Greek cuisine is internationally recognized for its deliciousness. Trafalgar will take you to the heart of Greece’s culinary traditions, each mouthful and mealtime an utter treat.

What to pack for Greece

People packing for a tour

Long, breathable pants or skirts

Often warm all year around, and extremely hot during summer, long, light clothing is ideal for daytime sightseeing in Greece – particularly when visiting historic religious sites that require modest attire.

A stainless steel water bottle

Whether you’re basking ocean-side beneath the hot sun or trekking the ancient monuments of this distinct country, you’ll need to stay hydrated. Stainless steel bottles keep your water cold for eight hours while treading lightly on the environment.

Walking shoes

Comfortable shoes are a must when you’re out from morning to night. Choose sturdy, open-toe walking sandals or closed toe sneakers to ensure you can walk effortlessly for hours.

A wide-lens camera

From coasts spanning miles of sea to some of the world’s most spectacular ruins, Greece is bursting with scenes you will want to remember forever. A wide-lens camera will make it easier to capture the views.

Sun protection

Whether it’s SPF50+ sunscreen, a wide-brimmed sun hat or long-sleeved clothing, some form of sun protection is crucial when visiting this popular summer vacation spot.

Pack for sustainable travel

Consider your environmental impact when you next take a trip and go single-use-plastic-free by packing a reusable water bottle, a steel straw, your own shopping bags and toiletry bottles.

Best time to visit.

Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 85°-100°F ( 30°-38°C ).

By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes   Athens   and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs

Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama, and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.

Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.

With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.

Food and drink

Greek cuisine favors simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts, and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill, and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri, and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savor a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavored ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete), and retsina (white wine flavored with pine resin).

Geography and environment

Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey, and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean, and Aegean Seas. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts, and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes, and grain for export and local use.

Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos, and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.

History and government

Early history.

The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas, and thought movements.

Recent history

In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles, and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia, and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

Festivals and events

The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilization. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

When is the best time to visit Greece?

Greece is best experienced outside of winter for most travelers. The best time of year depends on what kind of holiday you’re after – whether you’re more interested in soaking up the island sun or ancient history.

Is it safe to visit Greece?

Greece has historically been a very safe place to visit though petty crime, like pickpocketing, can be an issue in well-touristed areas. Travelers should remain alert when visiting crowded places and keep an eye on their belongings.

Do you need a visa for Greece?

Greece is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Greece, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveler. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

Is tipping customary in Greece?

There is not a strong tradition of tipping in Greece, particularly among the locals, but it’s become expected that tourists leave small tips while traveling through the country.

What is the internet access like in Greece?

You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.

Can I use my cell phone in Greece?

If you wish to use your cell phone while in Greece and you are not from an EU country, you’ll need to pick up a local SIM card or activate global roaming before you leave home.

What are the toilets like in Greece?

Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the trash rather than flushing it.

Can I drink the water in Greece?

Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.

For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?

Credit cards are widely accepted in  Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.

It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favorite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.

What is ATM access like in Greece?

ATMs can be easily found in cities and towns across Greece, including on the Greek Islands.

What is the weather like in Greece?

Greece’s coast and islands enjoy a Mediterranean climate with hot summers and windy, rainy winters, while the inland regions have a more continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. In the northern mountains, close to the Bulgarian border, the winters are cold with heavy snowfall , while the summers are relatively mild.

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

If you are traveling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at the time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travelers who do not wish to share a room.

Is Greece accessible for travelers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travelers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.

If you do live with a visual, hearing, or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you, and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What should I wear in Greece?

What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.

If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.

If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.

What are some common phrases to learn before traveling to Greece?

Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.

How many islands are there in Greece?

There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.

How will I travel around Greece?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself traveling by:

Live like a local resident by hopping on a local bus. Cheap, efficient and fast, it’s a great way to get around Greece’s busy cities.

Some of Greece’s most postcard-worthy scenery is best viewed from the water. Take in awesome views of quaint fishing villages, gorgeous   beaches  and the turquoise Aegean Sea as you hop between Greece’s famed islands aboard a ferry.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Does my Intrepid trip include airfare?

While our Intrepid trips include many modes of transport, from tuk-tuks to overland vehicles, bullet trains and feluccas, airfare to and from your home country is not included in your tour package.

Greece FAQ's

Greece is famous for being the birthplace of democracy, the creation of the Olympic Games, and for its unique and historical architecture. Some examples include the Acropolis in Athens, the Sanctuary of Delphi, and the ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The country offers the most beautiful natural landscape and a fascinating culture. Officially called the Hellenic Republic, Greece is an absolutely beautiful country. The land of Greece is infused with ancient mythology and if you like archeology, history, art, and philosophy then you will love Greece. The country is also famous for its delicious cuisine, cliffs tumbling into sparkling blue water, sand and pebble beaches, and a balmy Mediterranean climate, which all make this destination a prime tourist destination.

Known for its abundance of ancient ruins, whitewashed villages, beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and welcoming atmosphere, it is no wonder that Greece ranks among Europe`s top travel destinations. But the reason that tourism exists in the first place is that it`s just so beautiful here. Often, you`ll find that beauty on the many Scattered Islands , lying like little gems in the seas surrounding the Grecian peninsula. Each one offers its own share of spectacular landscapes, historic sites, nightlife scenes and cultural delights. There`s a wealth of these to explore. From the Ionian Islands in the west – including Kefalonia Island and Corfu Island - to the Aegean Sea, boasting Mykonos Island , Santorini Island , Paros Island , Kos Island and Rhodes Island , amongst others. Then there`s the pre-Hellenic Minoan culture of Crete Island to the south. Back on the mainland, there`s scenery worthy of the gods all over the place. The monastery of Meteora , the ruins at Delphi , and then, most legendary, the capital of Athens and all of Mainland Greece to explore.

Generally speaking the best time to visit Greece is during spring (from April until mid-June) and fall (September - October). During these months the weather is mild, and the crowds are less. July and August are very hot months, and it`s very crowded, especially in popular destinations like the Mykonos, Santorini, Rhodes, etc. Due to its mild climate, Greece is an all-year-round destination. Every season in this country has its charm, as well as its pitfalls, so when to go depends on your travel type, destination and what activities you`re interested in. Like many other countries, you can have a very different experience depending on when you decide to visit. Here is an overview of Greece in all four seasons that will help you make a decision what`s the best time of year for you to visit. For more information, check out: Best Time to Visit .

We recommend 7-10 days based on what you want to see and do. We offer flexible vacation packages so you can select your number of nights in each city, desired hotel and activities. We suggest a minimum of 3 nights in larger cities.

For some visitors, going to Greece is all about going to the islands. For others, it`s the 2,500 years of history in Athens, on the Peloponnese Peninsula and beyond. But for most travelers, it`s a combination of islands and inland, city and countryside, culture and leisure. Getting from each destination is as varied as the places themselves. Whether you`re traveling for a week or longer, chances are you`ll find yourself using boats, trains, cars and maybe even mopeds. By Boat/Ferry: Greece has 227 inhabited islands and more than 8,500 miles of coastline, so it should come as no surprise that boats are one of the most common ways to get around. The country offers an expansive network of ferries between the various islands and archipelagos, as well as ferry services to Italy and Turkey. Within easy reach of the Athens International Airport is Piraeus, which is the main port for ferries plying the Aegean Sea. From there, there are regular routes to the major islands in the Cyclades, Crete, the Saronic Gulf Islands, the Dodecanese chain and the Northeast Aegean Islands. A smaller port in Athens is Rafina, which has ferry service to Evia, some of the northernmost Cycladic Islands and many of the Northeast Aegean Islands. If you’re traveling to the Ionian Islands off the west coast of Greece, most ferries leaves from Patras or Kyllini on the Peloponnese or Igoumenitsa in Epirus. There are a number of ferry companies, with sea-going vessels that range from traditional large ferries carrying both passengers and vehicles to faster-moving catamarans and hydrofoils. By Train: The national rail system (OSE) is extremely limited and they don`t cover the whole country. Trains are slow and generally not very clean. That said, the importance of rail travel is now being rediscovered, and the national rail network is under major renovation. The project`s completion is still a long way off. There has been extensive (and continuing) modernization of the Athens-Thessaloniki corridor, with travel times being significant reduced. By Car: Driving the mountainous roads of the mainland and the busy streets of some of the more popular islands is not for everyone. If you`re up to the challenge, over 21 years old and comfortable with a standard transmission, renting a car is definitely a great way to explore remote villages in the countryside that are not reachable via public transportation. You will need an International Driving Permit accompanied by a valid driver`s license from your home country. In the U.S., these are available through AAA (American Automobile Association) and NAC (National Automobile Club). Car rental offices are present throughout Greece, especially in major cities and in highly touristed areas. The cars offered generally have manual gearboxes; automatics do exist, but it is advised to reserve one in advance. Some car rental agencies and insurance policies do not allow the car to be taken out of Greece.

The currency of Greece is the Euro. US dollars are not accepted. One euro is divided into 100 cents. The official symbol for the euro is €, and its ISO code is EUR. Please be sure to have the correct currency on hand or be prepared to exchange your dollars for euros upon arrival. Currency exchange desks can be found at the airport and many locations throughout the different cities. For more detailed information, consult our guide by clicking here Tipping in Greece .

Greek is the official national language and is the native tongue of the vast majority of the population, although the English speaking visitor will encounter no significant language problem. English is the most widely studied and understood foreign language in Greece, followed by French, Italian, and German. Basic knowledge of English can be expected from almost all in the tourism industry and public transport services. Learning a few Greek terms, such as `hello` and `thank you` will be warmly received.

Destination Must-See's

Greece ms1

This is the most spectacular destination in the Mediterranean and holds the most prehistoric settlement in the region. The ancient town of Akrotiri was once destroyed and consequently preserved by a volcanic eruption around 1450 B.C. The excavation site of this city is known as the “Minoan Pompeii.” But perhaps the island’s greatest draws are its vineyards, whitewashed chapels, volcanic cliffs, and famous wines of Santorini.

Greece ms2

Known as the “whitewashed jewel of the Cyclades islands” or the “Island of the Winds,” it is said that the island was formed from the petrified bodies of giants killed by Hercules. It also gets its name from the grandson of Apollo - “Mykonos.” In the island’s capital town you will find the church, town hall, castle, the Archaeological, Folklore, and Maritime Museums, and a shopper’s paradise – Matoyianni Street.

Greece ms3

Athens is the capital city of Greece and the historical capital of Europe. It is home to many celebrated ancient monuments including the imposing Acropolis, the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, the Royal Palace, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Olympic Stadium, and Hadrian’s Gate – the symbolic entrance to the city. It also has the charming Plaka neighborhood which has been without interruption since antiquity.

Greece ms4

One of the most well-known tourist destinations in Greece, Olympia is located in the western Peloponnese, known as the “Valley of the Gods.” Surrounded by beautiful scenery from the Arcadian Mountains, it is home of the first Olympic Games that were held in 776 B.C. You can walk through the ruins of the ancient Olympic stadium, witness amazing sculptures at the museum, or even attend one of the many festivals held throughout the year.

Destination Must-Do's

Greece md1

Meteora Monastery:

Over 600 years ago Byzantine monks chose to build their monastic community atop limestone rock “towers” that extend nearly 900 feet into the air, making them virtually inaccessible. It is one of the greatest monuments in the world, and is the most important monastic center in Greece. You can climb these rocks and travel the paths hidden behind the massive rocks.

Greece md2

Delphi ruins:

Delphi was regarded as the center of the world and had the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. The site includes two sanctuaries dedicated to Apollo and Athena, and other buildings that were mostly intended for sports. The earliest finds in Delphi date back to 4000 B.C. from the Korykeion Andron, a cave where the first rituals took place. The ruins are filled with an enormous amount of history and beauty.

Greece md3

Greek Olive Farm:

Olives and olive oil are staples of the Mediterranean diet, and Greece is a major grower and producer of olive products. A visit to a Greek olive farm can provide a taste of Greek culture and serve as a window into everyday life in the country. Tours, tastings, meals, and cooking classes hosted at olive farms are all wonderful options on the table when venturing into Greece’s countryside.

Greece md4

Travel back in time with a visit to Athens’s old city – the Plaka. The hilly cobblestone streets are lined with historic buildings housing small shops, sidewalk cafes and family-owned restaurants making this neighborhood Athens’ crowned jewel. The neighborhood comes alive at night. The alleyways fill with music and dancing and locals and visitors alike dine on their favorite traditional dishes.

Expert Advice

diana

Getting around is easier than you would expect. Greeks can speak English enough to assist travelers, and street signs are in both Greek and English.

Greece e2

Much of your trip may focus on the ancient past yet I suggest you also take time to explore the vibrant traditions that still live in today’s Greek culture.

Greece e3

Greece is a welcoming destination year-round. Consider visiting October through May to beat the summer bustle, and with Greece’s 250+ days of sunshine in an average year, don’t forget your sunglasses.

  • Consider holiday packages to Greece that don’t include meals so that you can explore all the delicious treats this culinary destination has to offer.
  • Greek cuisine is known for its red meat, so make like a local and try the rotisserie-cooked meat known as gyros which is typically served in a pita with some tangy tzatziki.
  • While Greek island hopping, dine on fresh seafood.
  • Despite imported drinks being generally expensive in Greece, local beer and wine is fairly cheap in the tavernas and there are countless cavas (bottle stores) where you can buy drinks to take back to your hotel.
  • Explore side streets for quirky hidden tavernas to avoid pricey restaurants in the main tourist areas.
  • Tap water is typically drinkable in Athens and other cities but stick to bottled water on the islands.
  • Greek island tours are known to be gloriously sunny, so don’t forget to pack sunscreen, a hat, and some good quality sunglasses.
  • Mosquito repellent and a comfy pair of walking shoes are also essential.
  • The best time to travel to Greece from South Africa is between May and October.
  • Greek island tours are not ideal between October and early April as tourism facilities such as hotels, tavernas, souvenir shops and travel agencies close down on many of the smaller islands.

  • There are over 140 Greek islands to choose from with most first time visitors heading for popular favourites such as Santorini, Mykonos, Crete, Rhodes, and Corfu.
  • ATMs and credit card facilities are available in towns throughout Greece, on the mainland and on the islands.
  • Travelling from Athens to the islands by ferry is often far more enjoyable than flying, though if time is an issue, flights are quicker for more distant islands such as Corfu, Crete, and Rhodes.
  • Athens city centre is served by frequent buses and trolleybuses, and its reliable underground system extends to the airport.
  • While taxis in Athens and most major cities are safe, plentiful, and cheap, on the more commercial islands they can be expensive and are typically scarce, especially during peak times.
  • All Greece’s main cities and towns are connected by an extensive network of long-distance buses, which almost always prove more efficient than the train.
  • A trip to the Greek islands is the perfect opportunity to stretch your sea legs, with many types of yachts and sailing vessels available to be hired with or without crews.

Best Greece Tour Packages in 2024

Best time to visit.

The best time to visit Greece is believed to be in spring, early summer (mid-April to mid-June) or autumn (Sept to mid-October). If you don’t like the peak tourist season, you can avoid travelling during the month of August. But if you like the cold, especially snow-covered landscapes, feel free to book a Greece package in the winter.  Winters are cold with variations of dry, wet and warm weathers while summers are plain hot. In the spring season, you get to celebrate a prolonged Easter week (Eastern holidays and St. George’s Day), whilst enjoying the pleasant weather. The autumn season greets you with clear calm and warm waters for you to dive and swim in. The tourist numbers dwindle down to a sparse few and as a result, you can enjoy a more peaceful vacation during these months. To know more, just visit the MakeMyTrip website and check out the exciting range of Greece holiday packages to choose one that suits your requirement.

How to reach

Places to see.

  • Visit the heart of Greece : Athens is not only the capital but the very epicentre of where the history of a powerful civilisation began and an empire emerged. The hilltop citadel of Acropolis, with the colonnaded structures distinguishing ancient structures, such as the Parthenon temple, represent a stark image of a once powerful civilisation; its ruins still standing tall in the sands of time. You can drop in at the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum to witness age-old sculptures, vases, jewelleries and other well preserved relics of ancient Greece.
  • The historically important structures have now become distinct landmarks, its originality still beautifully curated between contemporary architectural buildings. The modern city of Athens presents a bustling night life hub in locations such as Kolonaki, Psiri and Gazi. Walkways such as the ‘pedestrian only’ areas in the Palaka neighbourhood present tempting cafes, classical Greek tavernas and neoclassical houses. You can also leisure around the ‘Grand Promenade walkway’ built for the 2004 Olympics and admire at the crumbling timeless relics of the ancient Agora of Athens complex.

What to eat

  • Let’s start with some salad: The Greek salad is undoubtedly one of the most notable salads in the world. The salad is a staple diet in Greece, accompanying most of the meals. Made from fresh crunchy cucumber, tomatoes, onion, olives, the salad is well seasoned with salt and oregano, dressed with olive oil, vinegar or lemon juice and a generous helping of Greek feta cheese.
  • Wait, is it a dip or a salad? The taramalasta is a creamy, pink-coloured delight made from fish roe (eggs). This delectable food is far from the usual fishy flavour that many fish-based cuisines have, mainly because of the blend of olive oil and lemon juice. This is a dip, although it is sometimes confused for a salad.
  • The cooling freshness of Greek yoghurt: The Tzatziki is a wonder made with the infamous Greek yoghurt and cucumber, seasoned with some garlic. This salad pairs best with grilled meat or courgette meat balls or consumed alone - it is a refreshing delight!
  • Oven baked to perfection: The Moussaka is a layered, perennial favourite, relished throughout the Mediterranean and beyond. Variations are found throughout these regions. The secret of this dish lies in the layering of sautéed aubergine, layered with a tomato and minced meat sauce, flavoured with onion, garlic and spices like cinnamon and allspice, a bit of potato and topped with grated cheese and Béchamel sauce.

The Best Times to Visit Greece for Good Weather, Fewer Crowds, and Affordable Prices

High, low, and shoulder seasons all have their advantages.

vacation tour packages in greece

Alessandra Amodio

Greece has long beckoned travelers with its crystalline waters, rich historical sites, and delicious cuisine. One of the best times to visit is in late spring or early fall to avoid the summer crowds and soaring temperatures. Here's an overview of the main tourist seasons:

  • High Season:  July to August
  • Shoulder Seasons:  April to June and September to October
  • Low Season:  November to March

There are advantages to visiting year-round. The peak summer months are best for a classic coastal vacation spent swimming in the sea and dining in outdoor tavernas, while the low season offers a glimpse of local life as well as more affordable rates. Winter is also the rainy season in Greece, but it can be a good time for a cultural getaway with fewer crowds at museums and archaeological sites.

Ready to plan your trip? These are the best times to visit Greece no matter your priorities.

Michela Buttignol/Travel+Leisure

Best Times to Visit Greece for Smaller Crowds

Unsurprisingly, the most popular time to visit Greece stretches from late spring to early fall, when the warm weather draws beach-goers and island-hoppers. According to CEIC data , fewer than one million people visit Greece each month between November and March, compared to more than six times that number in August. So if you're not planning to hit the beaches, you'll encounter far fewer crowds if you visit in winter.

While the weather is cooler from November to March (average temperatures hover between the mid-40s and the low 60s), it can be a pleasant time to explore ancient ruins such as those at Delphi and contemporary art galleries and museums in Athens . Note, however, that many tourist venues and hotels close for the winter, particularly in the Greek islands , and there's a higher chance of rain between November and March.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Good Weather

If you're after warm weather but want to avoid extreme heat, May and September are among the best months to go to Greece. The country is relatively large, so temperatures vary, but in May, the average temperature in Athens ranges from a high of 77 degrees Fahrenheit to a low of 59. Mountainous areas like Mount Olympus are typically cooler. In June, the average high warms up to the mid-80s — perfect for swimming in the sea.

Summer can be sweltering, with average highs in the 90s in Athens, though the Greek islands tend to be cooler, in the high 70s and 80s. By October, average highs dip into the 60s and low 70s. Yes, it's cool, but nowhere near cold enough to feel uninviting. Winter is the rainiest season in Greece.

Best Times to Visit Greece for Lower Prices

You're likely to save money on a trip to Greece if you travel during the winter low season. According to Skyscanner , the cheapest month to fly to Greece is November. You can typically find the best airfare by booking your flight within one to two months of your scheduled departure.

Hotels tend to be pricey during July and August, so avoid these peak months if you're looking for lower room rates. It's worth noting that prices increase slightly during Greek Orthodox Easter, which sometimes falls at the end of April. The end of December and the beginning of January see a similar spike.

Worst Times to Visit Greece

There's no bad time to visit Greece, but July and August can be uncomfortably hot and humid, especially in Athens. The capital city and Cycladic islands (including Mykonos and Santorini) are also at their most crowded and expensive during these months, so it's best to avoid midsummer if you're looking for more elbow room, lower prices, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Conversely, winter temperatures can dip as low as the 40s in Greece and it's also the wettest season. While the cool weather is fine for exploring historical sites, shops, and museums, it's too chilly to swim in the ocean, and some hotels and attractions in resort areas may close.

Greece heatwave 2024: is it safe to travel and should you cancel your holiday

After the country was scorched by its earliest heatwave on record, here is everything you need to know if you have a trip booked amid more extreme temperatures

Liv Kelly

Greece is one of the sunniest countries in Europe , and the bright weather paired with lovely beaches and striking scenery have made it a well-established summer getaway spot for years.

However, Greece’s warm temperatures make it highly prone to heatwaves and wildfires, which are only becoming more common because of the climate emergency. Extreme temperatures scorched the country in a Europe-wide heatwave last summer , and Greece already experienced it ’s earliest ever heatwave in min-June.  Wildfires have spread around Cyprus , Kos, Chios and Crete , and  the Acropolis, Greece’s most popular tourist attraction, was forced to close  for the hottest parts of the day during this period.

These extreme temperatures have now skyrocketed again, reaching a blistering 45C in some regions. I t looks like Greece is set for a long and searingly hot summer.  Here is everything you need to know about the Greece heatwave if you have a trip booked.

Which areas have been affected by the heatwave in Greece?

Areas across Greece are about to be affected by the heatwave as extremely hot weather is set to prevail for 10 days from July 15 to 24.  Based on maps from WXCharts , the region around Larissa is predicted to experience blistering 45C temperatures, and areas such as Thessaloniki, Skopje and Athens, which will see temperatures of around 41-42C.

In Greece, temperatures above 38C which last at least three days constitute a heatwave.

So, is it safe to travel to Greece right now?

Travelling to Greece hasn’t been advised against, but if you have a trip booked, you’ll need to take precautions to stay safe. During the previous heatwave in some areas, people were told to remain indoors between 11am and 3pm, and in June schools were suspended and attractions, including the Acropolis, were closed due to wildfire fears .

Greece’s extreme temperatures during the first heatwave sadly led to the deaths of a handful of tourists, the first of which was British author and TV presenter Michael Mosely on the island of Symi, many of whom were out hiking during the hottest parts of the day.

What islands were affected by the wildfires?

Back in April, there was a wildfire on the island of Crete which injured three people. More recently, Paphos, a city in southwest Cyprus, has experienced wildfires. Five villages in the area were evacuated, and many homes and farms have been destroyed by the fire. Thankfully, no casualties have been reported as a result of wildfires.

The islands of Kos, Chios and Crete have all also experienced wildfires in the last few weeks.

What is the UK Foreign Office saying?

The Foreign Office hasn’t advised against travelling to Greece, but on the safety and security section of the website, it reads: ‘There are active wildfires across Greece, including in populated areas on the mainland and a number of islands. Wildfires are highly dangerous and unpredictable. The situation can change quickly. Follow ‘112 Greece’ on X (formerly known as Twitter) for official updates.

You should:

  • take care when visiting or driving through woodland areas
  • make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished
  • not light barbecues

Causing a forest fire is treated as a criminal offence in Greece even if unintentional. If you see a forest fire, call the emergency services on 112. Forest fires can also cause travel disruption in wider areas.’

There’s more advice in this section about what to do if you find yourself in an area affected by wildfires – you can read that here .

What are your rights if you’ve booked a trip to Greece?

You won’t be entitled to a refund on your trip, as the Foreign Office hasn’t advised against travel to Greece. However, if you are concerned, it’s worth contacting your travel provider to see what can be done – you may be able to move the dates you travel.

What’s the hottest Greece has ever been?

Greece actually holds the record for the hottest temperature ever recorded in Europe. On July 10 1977, Elefsina (which is in the Athens metropolitan area) reached a scorching 48C. The longest heatwave ever recorded in Greece was in July 2023, lasting for 16 days.

When was the last heatwave in Greece?

The last heatwave in Greece was only a few weeks ago, and broke the record as the earliest one ever. Temperatures reached up to 43C in some areas on June 12 and 13. About the upcoming heatwave,  Greek Minister of Health Adonis Georgiadis said ‘People need to understand that climate change is happening and that they need to be very careful. We have had cases of foreign travellers who lost their lives in Greece.’

The heart of ancient greece, with the acropolis perched splendidly above the city, it’s impossible not to be swept up in the spirit of this ancient capital..

Dynamic Athens combines a high-octane dose of history with the fast pace of a modern-day metropolis. Temples, theaters and countless sacred sites share the landscape with modern museums. Government buildings look serious alongside charming tavernas; stylish shops are sprinkled amidst traditional markets. The city begs to be wandered and explored.

More about athens.

Raise your eyes nearly anywhere in Athens and you're likely to be stopped in your tracks by the sight of the Acropolis, where Pericles rose to the heights of power and creative achievement with the construction of the Parthenon and Propylaea. After a trip back to the golden age of Greece, explore modern Athens's patchwork of neighborhoods to get a sense of the history of this gregarious city, its people, and what lies beyond the ubiquitous modern concrete facades. Take in a twilight view from Athenians' favorite aerie, Mt. Lycabettus, and drink in the twinkling lights of the metropolis that is home to more than 4 million souls, still growing and still counting.

Except for August and major holidays, when many Athenians migrate to their ancestral villages outside the city, the streets are crowded. The best times to visit the city are late fall and spring, when you can avoid the oppressive heat and the hordes at major archaeological sites; you can also enjoy the bustling nightlife in the center, because after June many restaurants and clubs shut down or relocate to the seaside. Holy Week of the Orthodox Easter, usually in April or May, is a chance to observe Greece's most sacred holiday, including mournful Good Friday processions and the candlelit Easter midnight service.

If you must come in summer, visit the sights in the early morning; then—as the Greeks do—take a nap or eat a leisurely lunch before continuing your explorations after 5 pm when several museums and sites are still open.

Top Experiences

Acropolis of Athens : Ancient citadel overlooking the city of Athens. The temple on this hill is probably the most recognizable monument in Greece.

Olympic Stadium : The Olympic games originated in Greece. The original stadium built in 1896, helps bring the world together every four years.

Psyrri : A trendy neighborhood full of restaurants, bars, boutique shops and vibrant nightlife.

Mount Lycabettus : Take a cable car to the top of this peak for a sprawling view of Athens, with the Acropolis right in the middle.

Church of Panagia Kapnikarea : One of the oldest Greek Orthodox churches in Athens, this 11th century building feels out of place surrounded by modern buildings and chain stores.

National Archeological Museum : This houses an immense collection of Greek artifacts.
