LOS ANGELES — Viking Octantis, Viking’s new purpose-built vessel, has kicked off its inaugural season in the Great Lakes.

Designed specifically for this region, the Viking Octantis is fresh off a roundtrip voyage through the Welland Canal, a key section of the St. Lawrence Seaway that connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, making it the largest passenger vessel ever to transit the canal. The ship will remain in the Great Lakes until early October 2022, sailing a variety of itineraries between Toronto and Duluth.

A second expedition vessel, the Viking Polaris, will debut later this year and will join the Viking Octantis in the Great Lakes for the 2023 season.

“Our expedition ships were designed with the Great Lakes in mind. This region has been historically underserved by cruise lines and we are delighted by the warm and enthusiastic reception we have received from the local communities,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “With our first season now underway, we are pleased with the strong demand among our guests and look forward to introducing even more curious travellers to these fantastic destinations in 2023.”

Viking will be operating four new itineraries in the Great Lakes for the 2022-2023 season:

  • Undiscovered Great Lakes (8 days): This itinerary sails from Thunder Bay to Milwaukee, allowing guests to explore the Apostle Islands and Keweenaw Peninsula, kayak through sea caves, visit Kakabeka Falls, and stroll the car-free streets of Mackinac Island.
  • Great Lakes Explorer (8 days): Sailing from Milwaukee to Thunder Bay, highlights include the boreal forests of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park, Mackinac Island, and coastal wetlands replete with birdlife.
  • Niagara & The Great Lakes (8 days): This voyage from Toronto to Milwaukee provides a close look at the lakes’ shipping history. Guests will marvel over Niagara Falls, keep watch for migratory birds at Point Pelee and explore sheltered bays and woodlands with a team of experts.
  • Canadian Discovery (13 days): Sailing from New York to Toronto, this voyage highlights the region’s colonial past while cruising along the St. Lawrence River. Guests will view the dramatic cliffs and wildlife of the Saguenay River Valley and take part in shore excursions in each port.

In 2023, Viking will also be adding a new 15-day voyage, ‘Great Lakes Collection,’ that sails from Toronto to Duluth and includes such highlights as Niagara Falls, the famous Soo Locks and the dense boreal forests that line the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Michigan.

The new Polar-class Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris host 378 guests in 189 staterooms. The vessels are purpose-built for expeditions and feature more indoor and outdoor viewing areas than other expedition vessels. Highlights onboard include The Aula, a panoramic auditorium for lectures and daily briefings, the outdoor Finse Terrace featuring heated seating and lava rock ‘firepits,’ an industry-first in-ship marina for embarkation and disembarkation, and the Science Lab, developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge and Akvaplan-Niva. There’s also a spa, numerous dining choices and the Nordic Balcony, a first for polar expedition vessels that is featured in all staterooms.

From now through May 31, 2022, Viking is offering special fares and reduced airfare on Great Lakes voyages. For more information call 1-855-8-VIKING (1-855-884-5464).

Viking Great Lakes Cruises Begins with Viking Octantis

Viking’s first of two expedition ships to cruise in North America began, as the purpose-built Viking Octantis kicked off its inaugural season in the Great Lakes. Designed specifically to cruise the Great Lakes region, Viking Octantis recently completed an historic roundtrip through the Welland Canal.

This important waterway is located in a key section of the St. Lawrence Seaway that connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Viking Octantis became the largest passenger ship to ever to transit the canal.

The ship will cruise the Great Lakes until early October 2022, with a variety of itineraries volleying between Toronto, Ontario and Duluth, Minnesota. Viking will launch a second expedition ship, Viking Polaris , later this year. Along with Viking Octantis, both expedition ships will cruise the Great Lakes for the 2023 season.

Viking Great Lakes Cruises Impact on the Region

Viking’s entry into Great Lakes cruising brings the newest and most modern ships ever to explore this region of North America. The ships will also contribute a substantial economic and tourism boon to the area. This includes ports in Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Ohio (beginning in 2023) and the Canadian province of Ontario.

“Our expedition ships were designed with the Great Lakes in mind. This region has been historically underserved by cruise lines, and we are delighted by the warm and enthusiastic reception we have received from the local communities,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking. “With our first season now underway, we are pleased with the strong demand among our guests and look forward to introducing even more curious travelers to these fantastic destinations in 2023.”

Viking Partners with NOAA

Viking has partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL), to help develop scientific enrichment program for its Great Lakes voyages. Both organizations conduct research on the dynamic environments and ecosystems of the Great Lakes and coastal regions.

The research information leads to resource use and management decisions for safe and sustainable ecosystems, ecosystem services, and human communities. In a unique twist, Viking’s expedition ships are designated official NOAA / U.S. National Weather Service weather balloon stations. The ships will be actual working weather ballon launch stations.

Viking Great Lakes Cruises for 2022 and 2023

During Viking’s inaugural 2022 season, there are four itineraries for the Great Lakes. These include:

  • Cross the width of Lake Superior between Duluth and the Soo Locks, explore the Apostle Islands and Keweenaw Peninsula. Hike along clifftop trails for panoramic views of Lake Superior. Kayak into sea caves by kayak and tour on foot or horse carriage through Mackinac Island. Be sure to buy some fudge!

  • Discover the maze of granite islands that comprise Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve. Hike and kayak through this pristine area before heading to Mackinac Island. Explore the boreal forests of Sleeping Giant Provincial Park on Lake Superior’s northern shore.
  • From urban skylines to uninhabited islands, you’ll explore North America’s wilderness as well as Toronto’s cultural attractions. Learn about the lakes’ compelling shipping history, visit Niagara Falls and be on the lookout for scores of migratory birds at Point Pelee.
  • From New York, you’ll head straight to Halifax, in eastern Canada. Admire the unparalleled beauty of the rugged coast of the Canadian Maritimes. Cruise along the wide expanse of the St. Lawrence River and marvel at the dramatic cliffs and wildlife of the Saguenay River Valley. Engaging shore excursions in each port allow you to better enjoy all this region has to offer.

New 15-Day Viking Cruise for 2023

  • Join Viking for a unique expedition across the historic waterways of all five of the majestic Great Lakes. Experience culture-rich urban centers and admire the awesome power of thundering Niagara Falls. Explore the granite islands and sheltered inlets of Georgian Bay and traverse the famous Soo Locks. Viking Expedition Ships Overview

The new Polar Class  Viking Octantis  and  Viking Polaris accommodate 378 guests in 189 staterooms and purpose-built for expeditions. Plenty of indoor and outdoor viewing areas enable guests to get as close as possible to the water for spectacular, unobstructed views.

Viking Octantis - The Hangar

Highlights include:

  • The Aula:  A stunning panoramic auditorium inspired by the University of Oslo’s famed ceremonial hall, the former venue for the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. Used for lectures, daily briefings, documentaries and films, this spectacular venue features a 4k laser-projected screen that retracts to expose floor-to-ceiling windows and 270° views.
  • Finse Terrace:  An outdoor lounge area just above sea level with recessed, heated seating and lava rock “firepits,” the Finse Terrace was designed to allow guests the comforts of the ship al fresco while enjoying the dramatic scenery. Named after the Finse Plateau in Norway, where some of the greatest polar explorers, including Nansen and Amundsen, did their expedition training in preparation for their North and South Pole expeditions.
  • The Hangar:  A state-of-the-art, industry-first in-ship marina providing ease of embarkation and disembarkation of Special Operations Boats and other equipment while sheltered from the elements.
  • The Bow:  An important forward-viewing platform. And in the case of inclement weather,  The Shelter  is a comfortable, partially enclosed space for guests to warm up with a hot drink before going back out into the elements.
  • The Science Lab:  Developed in partnership with the University of Cambridge and Akvaplan-Niva, The Science Lab, at 380 sq. ft., is designed to support a broad range of research activities and is equipped with wet and dry laboratory facilities. Guests have supervised access to The Science Lab to learn from and participate with scientists in undertaking meaningful research.
  • Expedition Central:  The hub for the expedition team to consult with guests on their expedition activities and share knowledge about the destinations on a one-on-one basis, with the aid of 3D printed maps, digital screens, and a state-of-the-art spatial data visualization chart table.

  • Dining Choices:  The Restaurant offers fine dining featuring regional cuisine and always-available classics; the casual World Café offers an open kitchen, bakery, grill and premium seafood and sushi choices, as well as a wide range of international flavors; Mamsen’s, named for the Hagen family matriarch, serves Scandinavian-inspired fare; and Manfredi’s offers the best of Italian cuisine.

  • The Nordic Spa:  Following a day of exploration, The Nordic Spa offers guests opportunities to experience the ultimate healthy Nordic traditions, with an indoor heated pool set against expansive windows and a  badestamp  (wood-sided hot tub) that is open to the outside.
  • Explorers’ Lounge:  Located high on the ship with floor-to-ceiling windows, the Explorers’ Lounge provides guests an ideal space to take in the magnificent scenery, share discoveries with fellow travelers or to enjoy a drink.

Viking Explorers Lounge

  • The Living Room:  On  Viking Octantis  and  Viking Polaris , The Living Room is located to maximize views of the surroundings through floor-to-ceiling windows and a library that informs even the best-read explorers. The Library is curated by acclaimed London bookshop Heywood Hill, as on all Viking vessels, as well as Cambridge University’s Scott Polar Research Institute.
  • Nordic Balcony:  A first for polar expedition vessels, all staterooms on board Viking’s expedition ships feature a Nordic Balcony, a sunroom that converts into an al fresco viewing platform with an observation shelf at elbow level to stabilize binoculars or a camera. Guests can choose from six stateroom categories that range from 222 sq. ft. to 1,223 sq. ft.—all with a Nordic Balcony, as well as a king-size bed and large bathroom with spacious glass-enclosed shower, heated bathroom floor and anti-fog mirror. Every stateroom is also equipped with a unique floor-to-ceiling drying closet that circulates warm air to dry and store clothing and expedition gear.

Viking Expedition ship Nordic balcony

  • Expedition Ship Suites:  Nordic Junior Suites (322 sq. ft.) and Explorer Suites (580 sq. ft.) on  Viking Octantis  and  Viking Polaris  are similar to those on Viking’s fleet of ocean ships, with wood detailing and amenities that include additional storage and seating, an expanded bathroom with extended shower and double sinks, welcome champagne, a fully-stocked mini-bar replenished daily, complimentary laundry, priority restaurant reservations and more. Explorer Suites feature two separate rooms, a Nordic Balcony and a full outdoor veranda. Additionally, each ship features one Owner’s Suite (1,223 sq. ft.) that has three rooms –a living room, a board/dining room and a bedroom—as well as a 792 sq. ft. private deck with a traditional Norwegian  badestamp  open to the invigorating outdoors.
  • Enrichment On Board and On Shore: Exclusive partnerships with the Scott Polar Research Institute at Cambridge University, The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)—as well as other prestigious scientific institutions match leading researchers and educators with each expedition. Thirty-six experts accompany each journey as part of the Viking Expedition Team, including an Expedition Leader and support staff, photographer, field research scientists, general naturalists, mountain guides, kayak guides, submarine pilots and specialists (ornithology, geology, higher predator biology and history). Daily onboard briefings and world-class lectures inform guests about their destination. On shore, they can assist in fieldwork or interact through experiential activities during landings—such as monitoring birds to help identify migratory patterns; accompanying scientists to collect samples; or taking their cameras ashore alongside a professional photographer to learn how best to capture scenic landscapes.
  • Environmentally Considerate: Viking’s expedition ships have set a new standard for responsible travel with an energy-efficient design that exceeds the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements by nearly 38%. In addition to an integrated bow that creates a longer waterline for the ships, engines with heat recovery systems and Azipod® Electric Propulsion, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris have received one of the industry’s first SILENT-E notations—the highest-level certification for quiet ship propulsion, minimizing underwater noise pollution.

Viking’s inaugural season in America’s Great Lakes is well underway. The line’s first expedition ship, Viking Octantis , recently wrapped up a roundtrip through the Welland Canal — a part of the St. Lawrence Seaway that connects Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. That makes it the largest passenger vessel to ever transit the canal.

Octantis is set to remain in the Great Lakes until early October of this year, operating a variety of itineraries between Toronto, Ontario and Duluth, Minnesota.

Next year, Viking’s second expedition vessel, Viking Polaris, will join Octantis for the Great Lakes season.

Viking’s arrival to the Great Lakes brings the newest and most modern vessels to the region, as well as an economic boost for the states of Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Ohio (starting in 2023), as well as Canada’s Ontario province.

To help develop the scientific enrichment program for its Great Lakes voyages, Viking has partnered with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory, which conducts research on the environments and ecosystems of these lakes and their coastal regions.

These expedition ships have also been designated as official NOAA/U.S. National Weather Service weather balloon stations, and launches will be regularly undertaken from their decks.

The four itineraries Viking is operating in the Great Lakes this year are:

  • Undiscovered Great Lakes: 8 days, Thunder Bay to Milwaukee
  • Great Lakes Explorer: 8 days, Milwaukee to Thunder Bay
  • Niagara & The Great Lakes: 8 days, Toronto to Milwaukee
  • Canadian Discovery: 13 days, New York to Toronto

In 2023, Viking will add a new Great Lakes voyage:

  • Great Lakes Collection: 15 days, Toronto to Duluth

From now through May 31, 2022, Viking is offering special fares and reduced airfare on Great Lakes itineraries. Call Viking or contact your travel agent for information.

Niagara Falls / Welland Canal

Niagara Falls on map

The three waterfalls are

  • the Horseshoe Falls , which lie on the border of the United States and Canada.
  • the American Falls , which lie entirely on the United States’ side, separated by Goat Island.
  • the smaller Bridal Veil Falls , to the right of the American Falls, are also on the United States’ side, separated from the American Falls by Luna Island

Horseshoe Falls is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by flow rate. More than six million cubic feet of water goes over the crest of the falls every minute. Niagara Falls is famed both for its beauty and as a valuable source of hydroelectric power.

During your visit, take a cruise into the mists of the falls, have lunch at a local winery, or visit the lovely town of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

The Niagara Escarpment whose lift caused Niagara Falls also creates an interesting microclimate on the shores of Lake Ontario. In winter, the lake increases the humidity of the surrounding air and moderates the temperature (cooler in summer, warmer in winter). The Niagara Escarpment blocks that air from escaping, making the agricultural land around Lake Ontario perfect for fruit cultivation. Today, Niagara makes 90% of the world’s ice wine.

The Welland Canal was first constructed in 1932 to allow ships to traverse the elevation separating Lake Erie and Lake Ontario–a difference of 326 feet! Fun fact: 20% of the world’s freshwater comes down the Niagara River and over these falls!

12 best Panama Canal cruises for a bucket-list trip

Donna Heiderstadt

A Panama Canal transit is a rite of passage for many cruise lovers. Experiencing this marvel of early 20th-century engineering appeals to those with a wide array of interests, from history and politics to colonial architecture and wildlife. Built by the U.S. government between 1903 and 1914, this 50-mile waterway linking the Atlantic and Pacific oceans revolutionized shipping by creating an expedited route for the transportation of cargo and, ultimately, cruise ship passengers.

Panama Canal itineraries are offered by almost every cruise line. Thanks to a 2016 canal expansion project, a third set of locks can now accommodate larger vessels. It's possible to cruise the Panama Canal on ships of all sizes (from 148 guests to more than 3,000), on itineraries that range from a week in the sun to a six-month world cruise.

Some ships sail a full transit of the canal, from the Atlantic to the Pacific or vice versa. These one-way journeys between Miami or Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles or San Diego visit ports in Central America, South America, Mexico and California.

Others sail only a partial transit, entering the locks from the Atlantic and cruising into Lake Gatun before turning around and exiting again. These itineraries, sailing round-trip from Florida ports, combine the canal experience with island hopping in the Caribbean.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The array of options means that a Panama Canal cruise experience is possible even if you're short on time or have a limited budget — and chances are high that your favorite cruise line offers one or more itineraries. Most sailings attract couples, typically retirees, but if the timing is right, a Panama Canal cruise can also be a great multigenerational experience.

Here are a dozen of the best Panama Canal cruises to consider.

Holland America's 14- to 17-night Panama Canal cruises

viking cruise ship in welland canal

Holland America offers a variety of Panama Canal cruises , but the most popular itineraries span 14 to 17 nights. They offer a full transit between Fort Lauderdale or Miami and San Diego, Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia, or vice versa, and are offered on multiple ships, including Koningsdam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam, Eurodam and Nieuw Amsterdam.

These sailings call on Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Huatulco and Puerto Vallarta or Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. Longer sailings also call on several Caribbean islands.

Who should go : Holland America ships sailing a full transit are popular with retired couples who appreciate the cruise line's consistency and good value. All four ships accommodate between 1,432 and 2,650 passengers and offer signature onboard experiences that include the Greenhouse Spa and the World Stage for evening production shows.

The larger Eurodam, Koningsdam and Nieuw Amsterdam feature additional specialty dining options, such as Tamarind and Nami Sushi, as well as popular music venues B.B. King's Blues Club and Billboard Onboard.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami cruise

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' newest ship, Seven Seas Grandeur , debuted in November 2023 and will transit the Panama Canal on several occasions in the next few years. The 16-night Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 8-23, 2025) transit offers luxurious all-inclusive pampering, plus port calls in Ensenada, Cabo San Lucas and Acapulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Panama City; Cartagena, Colombia; and George Town, Grand Cayman.

Plan even further ahead for Grandeur's 22-night Miami-to-Los Angeles transit (Jan. 3-25, 2026) to enjoy additional Caribbean ports of call. From Jan. 25 to Feb. 9, 2026, the ship will sail a 16-night Panama Canal transit from Los Angeles to Miami with an itinerary similar to the 2025 cruises.

Who should go : This itinerary can be a wonderful splurge for a couple seeking to celebrate a milestone anniversary or birthday in a memorable way on a luxurious new ship. Prices start at a hefty $10,099 per person for a spacious balcony suite, but they also include airfare, transfers, gratuities, dining and beverages, Wi-Fi, and shore excursions — meaning you'll hardly have any other vacation expenses.

Celebrity Cruises' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean cruise

viking cruise ship in welland canal

For a Panama Canal experience that begins and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Cruises ' 11-night Panama Canal & Southern Caribbean itinerary is a great option. At the time of writing, cabins are still available for the Dec. 2, 2024, cruise or the half dozen almost identical sailings that follow through April 2025.

All sailings are aboard the 3,260-passenger Celebrity Beyond and visit Cartagena, Colombia; Colon, Panama; Oranjestad, Aruba; Kralendjik, Bonaire; and George Town, Grand Cayman (Willemstad, Curacao, replaces Grand Cayman on some 2025 sailings).

Who should go : Celebrity Beyond and its Edge Class series sister ships appeal to millennials, Gen Xers and young-at-heart baby boomers who appreciate innovative design, entertainment and dining options. The ships are geared toward couples or groups of friends, but families with older teens might also enjoy the onboard vibe. There are no splash pools or waterslides for younger kids, although calls on three Caribbean islands offer aquatic fun.

Windstar Cruises' 7-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal cruise

To explore the Panama Canal region in a relaxed manner aboard an intimate motorized sailing yacht or small ship, check out Windstar Cruises' seven-night Costa Rica & Panama Canal itinerary. Bookable on more than a dozen dates from November 2024 through March 2026, the itinerary is offered aboard 148-passenger Wind Star or Wind Spirit (in 2024 and 2025) and 312-passenger Star Pride (in 2026).

The ship will travel from Colon, Panama, to Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica (or vice versa), transiting the canal. Passengers can visit Panama City and Isla Parida in Panama, plus Golfo Dolce and Quepos (for Manuel Antonio National Park) in Costa Rica.

Who should go : Fans of small-ship cruising who enjoy a casual onboard ambience, are interested in nature and wildlife, and wish to sample the regional flavors of Central America should consider a Windstar cruise . All accommodations on the sailing yachts are in snug yet well-designed cabins with windows but no balconies.

Wind Star and Wind Spirit are cozy and social four-deck ships, each featuring a pool and pool bar, a lounge, and two restaurants. Star Pride is the better option for those who prefer a more spacious, suitelike cabin with a balcony and a larger bathroom.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise

viking cruise ship in welland canal

There's no "Panama Canal" in this itinerary's name, but Norwegian Cruise Line 's 12-night South America: Peru, Colombia & Ecuador cruise (Feb. 27-March 11, 2026) makes a full canal transit as it sails from Miami to Lima, Peru. The 2,402-passenger Norwegian Jade will visit historic Santa Marta and Cartagena in Colombia; Panama City; Manta, Ecuador; and Trujillo and Lima in Peru.

Who should go : Couples and friends interested in experiencing not just a Panama Canal transit but some of the top coastal experiences along the Pacific coast of South America should choose this itinerary.

Norwegian Jade is an older, smaller vessel that was refurbished in 2022 and features a top deck more conducive to sunning than thrill rides. The ship also has a surprising number of restaurants for its size: two main dining rooms, a buffet restaurant, a pub-style bar and grill, an Asian restaurant, and an outdoor grill on a complimentary basis, plus six specialty dining venues (including a steakhouse and venues showcasing French, Italian and Japanese cuisines) for an added fee.

Oceania's 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles cruise

Oceania Cruises ' 1,200-passenger Vista — which debuted in May 2023 as the first new-build ship in Oceania's fleet in more than a decade — will offer back-to-back, 16-night Miami-to-Los Angeles (Jan. 8-24, 2025) and Los Angeles-to-Miami (Jan. 24-Feb. 9, 2025) itineraries.

Both sailings visit six countries with port calls that include George Town, Grand Cayman; Cartagena, Colombia; Puntarenas, Costa Rica; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; and Acapulco, Cabo San Lucas and Ensenada, Mexico. (The second sailing visits San Diego instead of Ensenada.)

Who should go : Oceania's newest ship offers a great compromise between a small and medium vessel. It's ideal for those seeking a premium cruise experience with casual sophistication.

Older couples especially will appreciate the ship's elegant cabin decor in soft hues of wheat and seagrass, a mix of grand and intimate spaces, and a wide array of dining options. (Two new and noteworthy venues on Vista include Ember for inventive American cuisine and Aquamar Kitchen for wellness-focused breakfast, lunch and dinner.) A more immersive mixology program features curated cocktail menus, indulgent pairing experiences and specialty beverage carts.

viking cruise ship in welland canal

The ship will first cross the Atlantic and then overnight in New York before calling on Aruba, transiting the canal and visiting Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. It will conclude with an overnight in San Francisco.

The winter transatlantic crossing might not be right for everyone, but the second half of this voyage explores warm-weather destinations with plenty of relaxing sea days for sunning, reading, taking dance lessons and enjoying expert lectures.

Who should go : British cruise line Cunard appeals mainly to older travelers who savor the line's formal traditions.
