About this site

This website is an improved interface for live bus times in the UK. It works by combining real time updates from local authorities with a searchable database of bus stops across the country. You can search for a bus stop by name , locate it on a map or browse by bus routes or locality to find the stop you need.

If you're on the move, you can also receive updates direct to your mobile through the traveline-txt service . Just find your bus stop on LiveBus.org, note down its SMS phrase (e.g. oxfadaja ) and follow the instructions carefully. Messages can cost up to 25p on top of your operator's usual SMS charges, so make sure you fully understand the terms.

If live updates aren't available or convenient, most routes also link to scheduled timetables , courtesy of traveline .

LiveBus.org is not affiliated with traveline, any local authorities, bus companies, or the Department for Transport and is freely provided as an alternative to existing services.

The maps are not yet working in Internet Explorer.

This site is running on a custom web application built with Python and the Django framework . It talks to a PostgreSQL database over psycopg and is served by Apache with mod_python running on a Debian virtual private server at RimuHosting .

All code is developed in Textmate and version-controlled with Subversion . Screens lovingly scraped with the help of BeautifulSoup .

The data comes from various sources:

• Localities: National Public Transport Gazetter (NPTG)
• Stops: National Public Transport Access Nodes (NaPTAN)
• Routes: Local authorities: Oxfordshire , Surrey
• Times: Local authorities
• Timetables: Traveline
• Mapping: Google Maps API

West Midlands Bus Users

Bus timetable information can be accessed in a number of ways.

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is part of the West Midlands Combined Authority and is responsible for providing printed timetable material at bus stops within the TfWM area, as well as real-time or timetabled departure information at display screens at stops or key interchange points.

Printed leaflets

Bus timetable information can be obtained as printed material from various Travelshops and other outlets.

The latest bus timetable information can be viewed and downloaded online from both the Transport for West Midlands website , as well as individual bus operators websites.

Other useful websites for obtaining timetable information are BusTimes , Traveline , and West Midlands Bus Timetables .

Please note that printed timetables either at bus stops or in leaflets can quickly go out of date, especially if timetable changes are made at short notice, or if timetables are only being adjusted for a short-term period, for example during school holidays when traffic levels are quieter.

Also, high levels of traffic congestion will cause services to be delayed, so your bus may not arrive at the times published.

If your bus stop or interchange has an information display, that will show you the estimated arrival of your bus.

Alternatively, if you have an internet-enabled smartphone or mobile tablet device, there are numerous apps you can utilise that will show you predicted or real-time bus arrival information for your stop.

Our passenger descriptions are designed to help you choose the right ticket for yourself or your fellow travellers.

Adult fares are applicable to all passengers aged 2+. Adults under the age of 16 are not permitted to travel alone on any European service unless accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over or they have a letter of authority from a parent or guardian.

Infants 0-1 Inclusive

Children aged under the age of 2, must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. Unaccompanied children will not be carried.

What does it do?

• Shows live departures for all bus services from a bus stop

When to use it?

• On a bus stop page

How it works?

• This shows all the bus services available from a bus stop, in numerical order
• The bus service name is the destination, instead of the full route name
• The 3 latest departures times for all services are shown next to the bus service indicator , name and operator
• Users can click on the bus service indicator to view the bus service in more detail

Options for service

Bus and tram service.

• Shows live departures for a bus or tram service from a bus or tram stop
• On a tram stop page
• This shows the latest 5 departure times for a bus or tram service on desktop. The latest 3 departure times are shown on mobile
• Users can favourite a bus or tram service, which will be added to the live departures widget on the homepage
• For bus services we show the operator name as more than one operator can run the same service number

Train station

• Shows live train departures from a rail station
• On a train station page
• Users can switch between live departures and live arrivals
• Users can filter live departures to see which train services stop at a specific rail station
• When a filter has been applied, users can favourite this journey to the live departures widget on the homepage

Live departures/arrivals

Options for departures, options for arrivals, live departures/arrivals (filtered), personalised homepage widget.

• Informs users of real time departures for bus, train and tram straight from the homepage
• On the homepage
• When a user favourites a service from a bus stop, train station or tram stop page, then the service will appear in this widget
• Users can return to the bus stop, train station to tram stop page by selecting the link
• Users can remove favourited services by selecting the ‘Remove services’ button
