Travelling is one of the best ways to experience the beauty of the natural world and to learn about different cultures. Ecotourism is responsible and sustainable travel to natural and cultural areas that conserves the environment, preserves the culture and provides economic support to the local people. Our Desert Safaris are part of the bigger picture – conserving the natural environment and cultural heritage of Dubai and the United Arab Emirates. As the only ecotourism company in Dubai, every decision we make is based on what’s best for the environment and local people in unison with curating authentic experiences for Dubai’s visitors.

ETHICAL ANIMAL TOURISM

The welfare of our animals is extremely important to us. That’s why we follow the strict guidelines of the Global Welfare Guidance for Animals in Tourism. These guidelines suggest that all animals should have access to the five freedoms which are access to food and water, a suitable living environment, good health, an opportunity to exhibit natural behaviours and protection from fear and distress. All of our camel safaris, falcon shows and wildlife drives follow these guidelines to ensure that they are ethical. Find out more about the Platinum Heritage Animal Welfare Guidelines.

Dubai Safari Park: a Must-Visit for Wildlife Enthusiasts

Tips for your visit to one of the largest wildlife animal parks in the region.

Dubai Safari Park is a 119-hectare wildlife preserve that houses about 3,000 animals from around the globe. Transforming the desert landscape into a lush space, the park attracts families, as well as nature and animal enthusiasts. I love this place because here you can escape from the urban jungle to an actual one (well, sort of), with wildlife from different continents. From African elephants and lions to Arabian wolves and Asian moon bears, it offers an immersive experience into the world of exotic fauna.

Dubai Safari Park is a new home for many animals relocated in 2017 from the former Dubai Zoo. It is a more sustainable and eco-friendly place where animals are treated with care. Apart from visiting different zones, you can join shows or feeding sessions and even go on a wildlife safari. Visit it if you want to learn more about different animal species, their behaviours and habitats, all while having a great time. In this article, I will tell you all you need to know about Dubai Safari Park sections, attractions, tickets, location, timings and more .

This is a seasonal attraction. Tickets are generally available from October to May.

Is Dubai Safari Park visit worth it: pros and cons

Check my quick overview of the pros and cons below to make a balanced decision.

  • Diversity of animals : You will be able to see around 3,000 wildlife animals, including those from the region, and learn a lot about them.
  • Safari : You can explore the park not only on foot but also by joining a guided Safari Journey and an Arabian Village drive-through imitating wildlife safaris.
  • Interactive experiences : You can feed the animals, watch bird shows or live presentations, enriching your experience.
  • Location : The safari park is not located centrally. However, it is done to ensure that animals have enough space and feel comfortable.

When is Dubai Safari Park open

Due to the desert climate, Dubai Safari Park operates only from October to May . This season, the park is open from October 5, 2023 to May 31, 2024 . It typically closes for the summer to give animals some rest from visitors and the heat.

Dubai Safari Park - Entrance

Park’s wildlife animals

Before I guide you through the preserve, let’s talk a bit about the true stars of the preserve — its animals. The park is home to about 3,000 animals , including almost 80 species of mammals, 50 types of reptiles and 111 sorts of birds. By the way, it is almost 3 times more than what the old Dubai Zoo had before. From the majestic African elephants and the elegant Arabian oryxes to the adorable meerkats and the quirky ostriches, the park has a diverse array of wildlife.

Moreover, if you are a fan of monkeys, you can see gibbons, baboons and chimpanzees in their natural habitats. Birds are represented by beautiful cranes, owls, white storks, mandarin ducks, parrots, peacocks and other species. There are also many exotic and less-known animals, so it is a great opportunity to see them in reality and get some extra information.

Furthermore, the park’s commitment to conservation is evident in its efforts to protect and preserve endangered species. They work closely with international organisations to ensure the well-being and survival of these species.

Dubai Safari Park areas and activities

What I really liked is that Dubai Safari Park is well-structured and divided into distinct areas or villages. These include the African Village, Asian Village, Explorer Village, Arabian Desert Safari, Wadi Area and Kids’ Farm . Each village offers a unique experience and a glimpse into the diverse wildlife of that region.

Have Fun Dubai’s Tip : There are several routes you can take depending on your day program. For a general visit, I suggest the following route that will save you time. After scanning your ticket, exit the main building and turn left to take a minibus that will take you through the Arabian Village and drop you off at the Asian Village. Then continue to the Explorer Village and after that to the African Village. Walk back to the main building and optionally visit the Kids’ Farm. The entire route can easily be covered on foot. If you are with kids, you might prefer to take a train ride (which is included in several ticket types or can be purchased extra) or rent mobility vehicles.

In addition to exploring these villages, you can also enjoy other activities like animal feeding, bird shows and more. Now, let me introduce you to each of them more in detail.

African Village

The African Village is a must-visit for anyone fascinated by the wildlife of the African continent. This area is designed to replicate the African savannah, complete with its diverse flora and fauna. Here, you’ll come across some of Africa’s most iconic animals like lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras and cheetahs.

Walking through the African Village, you’ll feel like you’re visiting the continent. You’ll see herds of zebras grazing, giraffes towering above the treetops, and if you’re lucky, you might even spot lions basking in the sun.

Have Fun Dubai’s Tip : Furthermore, the village has an open-air Grand Aviary where you can see a variety of African birds. The birds sometimes literally walk between your feet. I found this place really impressive. After all, it is the largest aviary in the UAE. It is centred around artificial giant trees connected by a footbridge. You can climb it and see the birds from above. And don’t forget to visit a small lake with gracious pink flamingos a bit further away.
  • Animals spotted : African elephant, cheetah, impala, gorilla, bongo, hyena, pygmy hippo, iguana, golden pheasant, white lion, sable, lizard, lorikeet

Dubai Safari Park - Baobabs

Explorer Village

From the African Village, you can move directly to the Explorer Village which offers a unique blend of animals from different regions. It’s a place where you can see a gracious cheetah, a famous Nile crocodile or a hippo wallowing in the water. The Explorer Village is a melting pot of wildlife, offering an eclectic mix of animals from Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

This is the largest, and, in my opinion, one of the most interesting areas of the park. Here you can watch a fascinating 25-minute bird show and go on a drive-through safari journey. Visit the Hippo Aquarium to see these big animals navigating in the water or get some carrots on-site to feed long-necked giraffes. It is a rewarding experience!

  • Animals spotted : hippo, giraffe, guineafowl, baboon, antelope, deer, Nile crocodile, lion, tiger, hyena, Arabian oryx, zebra, rhino

Dubai Safari Park - Arabian Oryx

Asian Village

The Asian Village in the safari park in Dubai is a tribute to the wildlife of Asia. This section is smaller and less inhabited in comparison to others, but you can still see some impressive animals, such as moon bears. It is also pleasant to just walk around passing the waterfall and a series of caves.

Furthermore, it is home to The Asian Village Theatre which organises regular animal shows.

  • Animals spotted : moon bear, mandarin duck, southern cassowary

Dubai Safari Park - Asian Village

Arabian Village (Arabian Desert Safari)

The Arabian Village at the safari park in Dubai is a great section to get familiar with the animals of the UAE and the Arabian Peninsula. You will get on a minibus and go for a 10-minute ride. By the way, the bus has no windows so it is handy for taking beautiful pictures with no obstruction. And the scenery will be indeed worth the pictures. Drivers are very pleasant and share some insights.

Here, you can see animals that have adapted to survive in the harsh desert environment, like the Arabian oryx, the Arabian wolf and the sand gazelle. The area is designed to replicate the desert landscape, complete with sand dunes, rocks and desert vegetation. So, prepare your camera, I am sure the Arabian Desert Safari will be a great backdrop!

  • Animals spotted : gazelle, Arabian oryx, Arabian wolf, addax

Dubai Safari Park - Arabian Desert Safari bus

Guided Safari Journey

If you want to add an extra touch to your visit, you can join a 35-minute Safari Journey with a guide. As you drive through in an air-conditioned bus you will witness many animals I have mentioned above.

The cool thing about this journey is that you will also learn many interesting facts from a knowledgeable and friendly guide. Like what is the fastest, tallest or biggest inhabitant of the park. In my view, the Safari Journey is a great option for those who don’t like walking (the park is indeed big) or would like to see a lot in a short period.

  • Duration : 35 min

Dubai Safari Park - Wildlife animals

The Wadi Area is a tranquil retreat within the bustling park. It’s a place where you can take a break from the wildlife exploration and simply relax. The Wadi Area is designed to mimic a natural wadi, a dry riverbed found in the Arabian desert.

The centrepiece of the Wadi Area is a beautiful waterfall, cascading down a rocky cliff. There are also several shaded seating areas where you can sit back and enjoy the serene surroundings. Moreover, there are a couple of restaurants, so you can grab some food.

The Wadi Area of the safari park is also home to a variety of bird species, such as swans, ducks and peacocks. The birds flitting about add to the charm of the place.

Dubai Safari Park - Wadi Area

Kids’ Farm

The Kids’ Farm is a paradise for the little ones. It’s a place where kids can get up close and personal with farm animals like goats, sheep, tortoises, ostriches and rabbits. It is a vibrant place painted in all the rainbow colours where children really have fun. The Kids’ Farm is designed to engage children in a fun and interactive way.

I would say that one of the highlights of the Kids’ Farm is the petting zoo. Here, kids can pet and feed the animals under the supervision of trained staff. It’s an experience that not only delights the children but also teaches them about the animals.

Moreover, there is an interactive play area where kids can burn off some energy. With slides, swings and climbing structures, it’s a hit with the young ones. So, let your kids loose in the Kids’ Farm and watch as they have the time of their lives!

Dubai Safari Park - Kids Farm

Animal feeding

One of the most popular activities at Dubai Safari Park is animal feeding . It’s an opportunity to interact with the animals and get a closer look at them. From feeding the giraffes to tossing treats to the goats, it’s an experience that’s sure to delight visitors of all ages.

Animal feeding sessions are held at specific times and locations throughout the park . I have listed them below. However, I recommend checking the schedule when you arrive as timings are subject to change.

By the way, these sessions are supervised by trained staff to ensure the safety of both the visitors and the animals. And, of course, do not bring food from outside in order not to harm the animals of the safari park. The food (such as carrots and cabbage leaves) will be offered for a small fee on-site.

  • Giraffe feeding timings : 10:30, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00 (Explorer Village)
  • Bird feeding timings : 12:00 to 12:30 and 15:45 to 16:15 (Kids’ Farm)
  • Goat feeding timings: 11:30 to 11:45 and 16:15 to 16:30 (Kids’ Farm)

Safari Park dining options

Exploring the park can be a tiring affair. Thankfully, Dubai Safari Park has several dining options to cater to your hunger pangs. From quick bites to sit-down meals, you’ll find a variety of food and beverage outlets spread across the park.

There are four main restaurants:

  • Oregano (in African Village) : Italian cuisine
  • Local House (near Explorer Village) : Mediterranean cuisine
  • Bait Al Qadeem (near Chimpanzee stop) : Arabic cuisine
  • La Venecia (in Glass Building) : Italian cuisine

Whether you’re craving a juicy burger, a hearty pasta or a refreshing salad, you’ll find it all here. There are also several kiosks where you can grab a quick snack or a refreshing drink.

Dubai Safari Park tickets

The park offers several ticket options and packages.

The cheapest one is a Day Pass which includes access to all villages, a 10-minute Arabian Desert Safari drive and live presentations.

  • Dubai Safari Park Day Pass price : AED 50 per adult, AED 20 per child 3 to 12 years, free for children under 3 years

You can also add upgrades at the park entrance, such as train rides between the zones (Day Pass+) and a Safari Journey.

Safari Journey tickets include access to all villages, a 10-minute Arabian Desert Safari drive, a 35-minute Safari Journey, unlimited train rides and live presentations.

  • Safari Journey ticket price : AED 90 per adult, AED 35 per child 3 to 12 years

Via the link below you can buy Safari Journey tickets (though price is a bit higher than at the gate) + add a shared transfer to the park from your hotel.

Book Safari Journey ticket with an optional transfer here

  • Dubai Safari Park opening hours : 09:00 to 17:00 (entry until 15:30)

I suggest that you arrive early if you want to avoid the crowds. A lot of families with kids attend the park in the afternoon.

How long does it take to visit Dubai Safari Park

It ranges from 2 hours for a quick visit to 4 hours or longer for a more thorough exploration . Given the size of Dubai Safari Park and the number of attractions it offers, you should ideally allocate at least half a day. However, the actual time may vary depending on your pace, the activities you choose to participate in and whether you are with children

If you’re planning to explore all the villages, attend the animal shows, participate in the animal feeding sessions and enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants, it can easily take up to 4 hours. However, if you’re short on time, you can prioritise the areas and activities that interest you the most.

Is safari park in Dubai ethical

One of the concerns many people have about zoos and safari parks is their ethical aspect. I too believe that all animals should be treated with respect. The good news is that Dubai Safari Park is committed to animal welfare and conservation. The park provides a comfortable and natural habitat for the animals, ensuring they’re well taken care of. The former Dubai Zoo had a lot of criticism for caging animals, so that lesson was learned before.

The park also works with international organisations to protect and preserve endangered species. They’re involved in several conservation programs and initiatives, contributing to the global efforts to save wildlife. Moreover, the park promotes education and awareness about wildlife conservation.

When you see the size of the bird aviary or the main park villages, you will notice that animals have enough space.

  • Dubai Safari Park address : Al Warqa 5, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

How to get to Dubai Safari Park

The park is not located centrally, however, there are still several options you can choose from.

  • By taxi : The quickest and most convenient way to get to the safari park is by taxi
  • By metro : Take the red line of the Dubai Metro to Centrepoint station (previously called Rashidiya) and then change to a bus (see below) or a taxi
  • By bus : Take the bus F10 from Rashidiya bus station located near the metro station
  • By car : Around 3,000 parking spaces available for the park’s visitors

15 Best Desert Safaris in Dubai

A quick note to say that most tours include pick up and drop off from your hotel or a chosen location in central Dubai. I have specified any exceptions to this rule. Your pick-up time is generally an hour before the tour start time. The exact time will be communicated with you at the time of booking.

Do check the terms carefully to ensure that the area where you stay in Dubai is covered in the transfer service. Bear in mind that religious holidays such as Ramadan do affect certain elements of the tours such as the cultural performances and dances.

Most Popular Desert Safaris in Dubai

The following 5 listings are the most popular desert safari tours in Dubai based on the opinions of previous customers. These tours offer a balanced blend of adrenaline and culture and each has various additional extras if you want to personalize your tour.

1. Dubai: Premium Red Dunes, Camel Safari, & BBQ at Al Khayma

Beduin camp in Dubai Desert at sunset

Price range: $$ Duration: 7 hours  Meals: BBQ buffet  Highlights: Dune bashing, camel safari, sandboarding, falconry show

An excellent all-rounder tour, this desert safari takes you across the Lahbab Desert where you will experience the thrill of dune bashing. Once you’ve worked up an appetite you will be taken to the Al Khayma Desert Camp for an evening of relaxation and further activities.

A short camel ride is included in this tour and there is the option to add a second ride and feed the camels yourself. You are also invited to partake in a spread of cultural activities including henna painting, meeting the resident falcons, and watching a traditional dance performance.

Additional add ons include the chance to go quad biking or expand the dune bashing to a longer duration. The meal included is a BBQ buffet but another upgrade gives you the choice to receive VIP table service.

Setting the precedent for most of the tours on this list, the excursion includes your pick up and drop off from your chosen hotel by a licensed desert guide in an air-conditioned 4X4 Land Cruiser. Lasting 7 hours in total, the tour usually starts at 3 pm.

Considering the inclusions, tour duration, price point, and customizations, I consider this to be the best Dubai desert safari in terms of the overall experience.

Customer review: “This excursion was a 10/10 experience!!! It was well worth every coin, most especially the dune bashing. Mansoor Manz was such an amazing host, if you are able to request anyone request him! He went above and beyond to make sure this experience for my family was special- the drive to the desert was accompanied with a full on tour, facts and history about the UAE, and good humor mixed in it all. This is a must book!” – Ahlam, May 2021

2. Dubai: Red Dunes Safari, Quad Bike, Camel Ride & Sand Board

Jeep tour in the Dubai Desert

Price range: $ Duration: 4 hours  Meals: None  Highlights: Dune bashing, camel safari, sandboarding

This Dubai desert safari is essentially a condensed version of the first tour on my list. The shorter time span (and subsequent reduction in price) means that this one is ideal for those on a shorter stay in Dubai or who are on a tighter budget.

The dune bashing aspect of the safari will last around 40 minutes after which you can enjoy a short camel ride and a spot of sandboarding. If you’d rather not take part in this then you can simply relax and soak up the landscape. There are plenty of opportunities to take photos during the safari.

Starting times vary from 8 am, 9 am or 10 am in the morning, and 3 pm in the afternoon which means that you will catch the sunset before you depart. Again, you will be collected from your hotel or desired location.

As with the first tour, this safari offers a couple of customization options. Those include upgrading from a shared tour to a private tour and adding quad biking if you wish.

However, there is no inclusion for food with this excursion so ensure that you eat well prior to leaving and pack some snacks to keep your energy levels up.

Customer review: “This tour was exactly what we paid for! Nabeel, our tour guide, was great with pictures and super fun in the safari ride! He was very attentive and communicative. The camel ride was amazing and I was happy that the camels look cared for. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a desert experience.” – Paola, April 2021

3. The Sunriser: 4-Hour Sunrise Safari from Dubai

Sunrise in Dubai Desert

Price range: $$ Duration: 4 hours  Meals: Breakfast picnic  Highlights: Sunrise in the desert, falcon show

If you’ve ever fantasized about witnessing the sunrise above the Arabian Desert, then this is the best Dubai desert safari for you.

Once you’ve got the early pick-up out of the way (don’t worry, you can snooze in the car) your licensed guide will whisk you away to the remote sand dunes where you will watch the horizon glow with the first rays of sunshine.

As the sun makes its final ascent you will be invited to take your seat for an Arabian breakfast picnic while you watch the falcon show. There will be plenty of time to ask questions about the desert lifestyle and customs, and you will gain heaps of trivia about the birds of prey during this tour.

This option is perfect for the culturally curious and those with an interest in wildlife – and early birds, it goes without saying.

This sunrise safari is perfect for bucket listers, photographers, and couples seeking one of the most romantic activities that the UAE can provide. But please note that this tour does not include dune bashing or any other extreme activities. The tour starts at 4.45 am, which means pick up is around 4 am.

Customer review: “We were picked up from the port on time. The guides prepared a great breakfast for us in the desert and we could calmly wait for the sunrise. Even if the falcon show was a typical tour program, it really fascinated us. However, this only took about 10 minutes. Dune bashing with the pick ups was also a lot of fun and we can only recommend the trip!” – Theresa, December 2019

4. Dubai: Morning Desert Safari with Sandboarding & Camel Ride

Dubai desert safari

Price range: $ Duration: 4 hours  Meals: Light snacks or brunch (optional) Highlights: Dune bashing, camel safari, sandboarding

If sunrise is pushing you too far out of your comfort zone then how about a more leisurely safari with the option to add brunch? This desert safari combines the rush of dune bashing and sandboarding in the Dubai desert with the opportunity to experience the landscape in tranquility before the afternoon tours arrive.

Once you’ve had your fill of adrenaline your guide will take you to Al Khayma where you will be greeted with traditional Arabic coffee (Gahwa), dates, and other sweets. Once at the camp you will have the chance to meet and ride the local camels and learn about the Bedouin way of life.

If you want to indulge in the traditional Arabian brunch then this will take place upon completion of the safari quest, at Al Khayma Heritage House in the Al Fahidi Historical District.

This safari offers four morning start times of 7.30 am, 8 am, 9 am, and 10 am. However, there is also the opportunity to book an afternoon slot at 3 pm or 3.45 pm which will conclude with golden hour. Again there is the option to add quad biking to your session.

This is the best Dubai desert safari for those on a budget who still want to experience a bit of everything. For those seeking luxury, you can select the private tour version of this excursion.

Customer review: “Bash, our guide picked us up right on time, then he drove us to the desert and during the ride he showed us some attractions and told us about the history. Sand duning was fun but you shouldn’t do it if you have motion sickness. Sand boarding and the camel ride were a nice experience, would definitely recommend!” – Sarah, April 2021

5. From Dubai: Red Dunes and Camel Safari with Overnight Camp

wildlife safari uae

Price range: $$ Duration: 17 hours  Meals: Light snacks, BBQ buffet, breakfast  Highlights: Dune bashing, sandboarding, camel safari, camping overnight in the desert, sunset, and sunrise

Now that you’re all warmed up with the first couple of tours, how about upgrading your desert safari to a camping adventure? Surely the most immersive safari tour in Dubai, this option gives you the chance to live the real desert life by spending a night in a Bedouin tent!

Following your hotel collection, you will journey to the desert and enjoy a sequence of dune bashing, sandboarding, and camel riding. If you so wish you can also add quad biking at this stage for an additional fee.

After all the excitement you will be offered Gaymat (Arabic sweets) and Chai (Arabic tea) before making yourself comfortable to observe the sunset in the camp.

You will spend the night sleeping in a Nawar, a Bedouin-style bed housed within a tent, beneath a quilt of stars. But before you hit the hay you will share a BBQ feast while you watch Tanoura dancing and belly dancing displays.

There is also the option to smoke shisha and meet the resident falcons, and ladies may participate in henna painting.

You will start your second day by rising early to undertake a camel trek through the dunes to the nearby sunrise spot. Before returning to Dubai bright and early, you will tuck into a freshly cooked Arabian breakfast. The tour starts at 3.30 pm and is excellent value for what you receive.

Customer review: “Unbelievable from start to finish. I was with the team leader Rav, and he just crushed the dune bashing. The camp in the desert was lovely, the bed and tent they had prepared too. MUST DO in Dubai, like seriously. Worth all your money….. And more!” – William, May 2021

Most Unique Desert Safari Tours in Dubai

For the final section of my guide to the best Dubai desert safaris, I’ve chosen 5 tours that offer something utterly unique.

The following tours are preoccupied with showcasing the heritage, culture, nature, and wildlife of the desert and sustainable tourism. None of these excursions include dune bashing but they all offer something remarkable in its place.

11. Heritage Desert Safari from Dubai

Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Price range: $$$ Duration: 7 hours  Meals: Dinner Highlights: Vintage Land Rover transportation, tour of Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, bread making experience

This safari tour in Dubai is radically different from the others. First of all, you’ll notice that your vehicle is a vintage, open-air 1950’s Land Rover rather than a modern 4X4.

As I explained, there is no dune bashing in this tour but rather the safari focuses on the heritage of desert culture and the exotic wildlife that resides in the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.

This is a 225 square kilometer (87.1 square miles) natural reserve which limits the number of tour operators who are permitted to organize trips here. This means that with minimal impact on the environment you can see what the region would have looked like centuries ago. In fact, another wonderful factor about this safari tour is that a contribution is made directly to the reserve when you book your place.

After taking an informative tour through the conversation reserve you will relax at an evocatively lit Bedouin camp and immerse yourself in activities such as camel rides, henna artistry, shisha, and befriending the falcons.

Another unique feature that this tour offers is that you will learn how to prepare a local bread recipe that has been carefully handed down through the ages. The tour starts at 2.30 pm and your booking includes your dinner beneath the stars.

Customer review: “Fantastic from start to finish. The guides really cared about the experience they were delivering and all felt very authentic and premium. Particularly liked the awareness of sustainability of the experience by not offering dune bashing, sticking to the tracks and not using plastic bottles, rare to see in Dubai!” – Max, December 2020

12. Dubai Private Night Safari & Astronomy

Dubai Desert Camp at Night

Price range: $$$ Duration: 5 hours Meals: 3-course dinner Highlights: Vintage Land Rover transportation, twilight desert walk, astronomy session

If you’re waiting for me to share the best desert safari in Dubai for a romantic date night then this is the one you’ll want to surprise your other half with. Pick up for this unique night safari is 5.30 pm.

Each booking covers two guests and you will venture into the desert after sunset in an open-top 1950’s Land Rover. After a drive through the cooling dunes, you will participate in a twilight nature walk where you might see anything from creepy crawlies to fauna.

Night vision binoculars are provided so that you can see the full might of the desert-scape and its nocturnal residents. This activity is led by a highly trained conservation guide with extensive knowledge of ecotourism and the local environment.

In addition to the wildlife safari, you will take part in an astronomy session with a professional telescope which allows you to fully comprehend the star-studded sky. Your evening concludes with a decadent three-course dinner at an exclusive camp within the desert retreat of the local royal family. As you see, this safari oozes romance!

I really recommend this tour if you like to a different view of Dubai. The food was also really tasty. we started from 6.30 pm until 12 pm, be prepared to wear comfortable shoes.” – Ngan, May 2021

13. 1 or 1.5 Hour Horseback Dubai Desert Park Ride

Horse riding in the Dubai desert

Price range: $$ Duration: 1-1.5 hours  Meals: None Highlights: Experience the desert by horseback, washing and tending to your horse, possibility to see native wildlife

Giddy up, this is one of the best desert safaris in Dubai for horse lovers! You will mount your friendly horse and follow your guide through the dunes of the National Mushrif Park.

Along the way, you can keep your eyes peeled for native wildlife that resides in the region such as the desert fox. Even without spotting any fauna, the scenery is breathtaking and you can soak up nature far from the sounds of the dune bashing 4X4s and quad bikes.

Upon conclusion of the trek, you will be invited to wash and groom your companion horse and give them a reward of carrots. The tour is best suited for those with some horse riding experience as at times you will trot and canter.

This tour is available at 5.30 am, 6.30 am and 6 am. Please note that unlike most of the other safaris on this list, for this activity you will need to arrange your own transport to and from the horse stables.

Customer review: “Amazing experience in the nature, beautiful surrounding, great horses. All very organized and professional.” – Julia, May 2017

14. Dubai: Private Falconry Safari

Dubai Safari Tour with Falconry

Price range: $$$ Duration: 5 hours  Meals: Luxury breakfast (optional) Highlights: 1.5 hours of falcon handling, nature drive

Designed for those with a keen interest and appreciation for birds of prey, this safari provides you with the bucket list experience of training a falcon to fly from your own wrist.

During the course of the private safari, you will also interact with an owl and an eagle. The falconry experience of the tour lasts 1.5 hours and is led by a professional falconer who is passionate and committed to taking care of the beautiful creatures.

For the remainder of the tour, you will be able to enjoy a nature drive by 4X4 during which you will be poised to spot the likes of houbara bustards, Arabian oryx, and sand gazelles. As you can imagine, this is the best desert safari in Dubai for those who possess an eagle eye of their own! However, your qualified guide will do his/her best to help you detect the wildlife.

As the tour starts at 5 am you may want to upgrade the experience to include a luxury breakfast. At least two participants are required to book this unique tour.

Customer review: “Wonderfully personal experience among the untouched dunes of the Desert Conservation Reserve: for nature lovers interested in learning about falconry and the flora and fauna of the Arabian Peninsula, this tour offers an authentic, hands-on experience with a knowledgeable guide. Rather than watching birds being flown, you become a trainer yourself and get a taste of how various birds of prey hunt and form working bonds with falconers. Worth the extra Money.” – Viktoria, December 2019

15. Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve 5-Hour Tour with Breakfast

Arabian oryxes in Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve

Price range: $$ Duration: 5 hours  Meals: Breakfast  Highlights: Chance to spot native wildlife, expert knowledge from conservationists

For the final tour on my list, you will head deep into the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. As you observe the likes of native birdlife, Arabian Oryx, desert monitors, and free-roaming gazelles, your safari guide will nourish your exploration with a wealth of knowledge about the flora, fauna, and history of the first national park in the United Arab Emirates.

It’s not guaranteed but if you’re really lucky you might even catch a glimpse of the rarely sighted Gordon’s wildcat.

Children over the age of 10 are welcome on this tour and it’s the perfect activity for solo wanderers, families, or couples alike. The start time for this tour is a languid 7.30 am and it concludes with a decadent breakfast at the Al Maha Desert Resort before you return to the city.

Customer review: “One of the highlights of our visit to Dubai, our driver and guide, Peter, was an accomplished naturalist. He quickly picked up on our interest in birds and wildlife and we had some great views of oryx, two species of gazelle, numerous LBJ’s and fine views of a Pallid Harrier, all from the comfort of a splendid silver Range Rover. The desert landscapes are spectacular and the stop for a relaxed breakfast was a welcome break at the unexpectedly luxurious Al Maha “desert resort”.” – Philip, December 2020

Useful Info for Planning Your Trip to Dubai

Where to stay in dubai.

There is no shortage of places to stay in Dubai, from high-end luxury hotels to more affordable options. Contrary to belief, you can find good deals on hotels in Dubai, no matter your budget.

The most important thing to keep in mind when booking your hotel room is the location. Dubai is huge and spread out, so you want to make sure you’re staying in an area that’s close to the sights and attractions you want to see.

Generally speaking, here are the best areas to stay in Dubai:

Deira – If you’re looking for a more traditional Arabic experience, you can’t go wrong with Deira. It’s also one of the more affordable areas in Dubai.

Bur Dubai – This is a great option if you want to be close to the action. Bur Dubai is home to many of the city’s best hotels, restaurants, and nightlife venues.

Palm Jumeirah – If you’re looking for a luxurious and relaxing vacation, look no further than Palm Jumeirah. This artificial island is home to some of Dubai’s most exclusive hotels and resorts.

Downtown Dubai – This is the best area for those who want to be close to the city’s most popular attractions, like the Burj Khalifa and the Dubai Mall.

Dubai Marina – This is a great option if you’re looking for a more laid-back atmosphere. The Dubai Marina is home to many restaurants and bars, as well as a beautiful waterfront promenade.

In case you’re curious to know more about each area with pros and cons and hotel recommendations, make sure to check out my in-depth article about  where to stay in Dubai .

If you want to make your Dubai trip even more memorable, read my post about the best hotels in Dubai with Burj Khalifa views !

If you’re in a hurry, here are my top recommendations for different budgets.

  • Luxury: Atlantis the Palm
  • Mid-Range: Crowne Plaza Dubai Marina
  • Budget: Gulf Inn Hotel Al Nasr

How to get to Dubai

Being the biggest hub between Europe and Asia and one of the busiest airports in the world, Dubai International Airport (DXB) welcomes a huge number of airlines and connects the city with the rest of the world.

Located only 15 km (9.3 miles) from Downtown Dubai, flying to DXB is the most convenient way to get to the city. Once you land, there are several ways to get into the city center: you can take a taxi, the metro, or even the bus.

Although DXB is the biggest airport in Dubai, you can also choose to fly to Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). This airport is located in the Jebel Ali area, about 50 km (31 miles) from Downtown Dubai, and it mostly handles cargo flights and low-cost carriers.

How to get around in Dubai

Dubai is an enormous city and getting around can be a bit daunting, especially if you’re not used to such big metropolises. The good news is that there are plenty of options when it comes to transportation.

Public transportation – Dubai has both metro and public bus systems in place. Although the metro is the most efficient way to get around, it only covers certain areas of the city. The bus system, on the other hand, covers a larger area but it can be quite slow during rush hour. This is definitely the cheapest way to get around Dubai, however, it can be pretty time-consuming.

Taxis – Taxis are widely available in Dubai and they’re relatively affordable, especially if you’re splitting the fare with someone. Your best bet is downloading the Careem app, which is similar to Uber, and lets you order a traditional Dubai taxi or a private vehicle.

Car rental – If you want the freedom to explore Dubai at your own pace, then renting a car is the way to go. Just keep in mind that traffic can be pretty bad during rush hour, so you might want to avoid driving during those times.

Best time to visit Dubai

The best time to visit Dubai is between November and March when the weather is cooler and more bearable. This is also the peak tourist season, so you can expect higher prices and bigger crowds.

If you don’t mind the heat, then you can visit Dubai during the summer months (June to August), when temperatures can reach up to 40°C (104°F). Each and every place is air-conditioned in Dubai, so you can take refuge from the heat indoors.

Just keep in mind that outdoor attractions such as gardens and water parks will be much less enjoyable during this time and it’s practically impossible to swim in the ocean because of the high temperatures.

If you want to avoid the crowds and get cheaper rates, then April, May, September, and October are the best months to visit Dubai. Prices will be lower and the weather will still be relatively pleasant.

Another thing to keep in mind: Ramadan takes place during the ninth month of the Islamic calendar but the exact dates change every year (usually it falls between March and May).

During this time, Muslims fast from dawn to dusk and many restaurants and cafes will be closed during the day. Alcohol is also not served during Ramadan. However, nightlife carries on as usual and many hotels offer special rates during this period.

If you’re not Muslim, then you can still visit Dubai during Ramadan, you just need to be respectful of the local customs and traditions.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island: Why You Need To Stay at The Only Wildlife Safari Sanctuary in the UAE

A wildlife sanctuary isn’t exactly what comes to mind when you think of weekend escapes in the UAE or day trips from Dubai ; picture-perfect resort pools, yes, beautiful beaches, also yes, but herds of spotted deer, Arabian Oryx, and sand gazelles? Not so much. This is exactly why the Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island is such an incredibly surprising getaway in the UAE.

Just 8 km off the western coast of Abu Dhabi, Sir Bani Yas Island is still something of a secret in the UAE and a worthy venture off-the-beaten-path. The legacy of the late ruler and founder of the UAE, Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Sir Bani Yas Island is home to a protected wildlife reserve where conservation programs work to save endangered species and those extinct in the wild.

Visitors can experience the island’s unique ecosystem and wildlife by staying overnight at one of three resorts:

Anantara Desert Islands Resort and Spa

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Sahel Villa Resort

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Al Yamm Villa Resort

I had the chance to stay at the Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort in a rustic but luxurious safari-style villa located in the Arabian Wildlife Park and was blown away by the experience.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island

What makes Sir Bani Yas Island special?

Named after the Bani Yas tribe, one of the oldest tribes on the Arabian Peninsula that were also among the first settlers on the island over 7000 years ago, Sir Bani Yas Island is no less than a success story of foresight, perseverance, and an understanding of the responsibility of every generation towards the world it inhabits.

The UAE’s visionary founding father believed that protecting the country’s heritage and wildlife was just as crucial as the progress towards modernity. He understood that conserving the region’s wildlife was important to take responsibility for the future. In fact, Abu Dhabi translates in Arabic to ‘Father of the Gazelle’ in reference to the many Arabian Oryx that once inhabited the region that now makes up the emirate.

Arabian oryx on Sir Bani Yas Island

As their numbers dwindled, the late ruler Sheikh Zayed set about this initiative to conserve them and other indigenous species and gave them a home on Sir Bani Yas Island by creating an ecosystem that would nurture their growth. Thanks to his leadership, our generation and future ones can now see the majestic Arabian Oryx, which could well be the origin of the fabled unicorn, in its natural habitat.

But the conservation efforts don’t end there; vulnerable and endangered non-indigenous species from far-flung corners of the planet have also found a home on Sir Bani Yas Island. These include the South African giraffe, eland, Urial sheep, Indian Axis deer, Indian antelope, East African Beisa Oryx, and Scimitar-horned Oryx that have been classified as extinct in the wild.

Sir Bani Yas Island is an outstanding example of sustainable tourism in the UAE and the region. As part of the project, the Greening of the Desert program led to the planting of resilient, indigenous plants and trees (such as the native ghaf ) on the island that would make the environment suitable for wildlife to thrive. The island also works towards protecting its life-giving mangroves and restoring the equilibrium between man and nature with a seedling planted for every visitor to the island.

Why Stay at Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts

While you can visit from Dubai or Abu Dhabi on a day trip, the long driving time means you won’t be able to spend enough time on a day trip. Anantara offers the only resorts on the island , each with a different vibe to suit every taste.

Got more time in Abu Dhabi? It’s worth checking out the Anantara Qasr Al Sarab  for a desert getaway.

The Al Sahel Villa Resort at Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island makes for an awe-inspiring weekend trip, thanks to its refreshing lack of unnecessary extravagance (that is so often seen in luxury hotels in the UAE) and its seamless, aesthetic integration into the natural surroundings of Sir Bani Yas Island. The rustic luxury lodges blend into the landscape of the Arabian Wildlife Park, so much that peacock families perch around your private plunge pool on the terrace and gazelles graze on shrubs nearby.

The Al Sahel Villa Resort is ideal for guests who want a quiet escape into nature, away from city life. Cell-phone reception can be spotty in the wildlife park, but count it as a welcome break from the constant noise and need to be ‘social’.

Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort Sir Bani Yas Island

Inside the villa, you’ll find an excellent, beautifully designed, and highly informative coffee-table book about Sir Bani Yas Island and the various species that call the island home, which makes for great reading.

The service is both friendly and impeccable. The staff is knowledgeable about the resort and the island and willing to go the extra step to find additional information they might not have. A special mention goes out to Karoliyna and Nuru for their excellent service.

Accommodation

Warm, earthy tones, dark wood, local fabrics, and luxurious modern touches mark the rustic décor of the spacious Al Sahel Villas . The beige mud and thatch-roof exterior is right at home within the Arabian Wildlife Park. The high ceiling beams, classic ceiling fan, plush leather chairs, and dreamy canopy bed can make you feel like you’re in a classic safari adventure movie. There’s a large couch and coffee table in the living area. During the day, natural light streams in through the large glass doors and windows that overlook the terrace and park.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts

The bathroom is spacious and luxurious with two vanity areas, a gorgeous free-standing carved bronze bathtub, and separate rain shower.

Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort on Sir Bani Yas Island

Strong Wi-Fi and a business desk means you can easily catch up on emails, though I can’t imagine why you’d want to do that when you can converse with peacocks on your terrace instead.

Modern amenities like air conditioning, Nespresso coffee-machine, minibar, and flat-screen TVs ensure a comfortable stay.

Every villa comes with a private, temperature-controlled plunge pool on the terrace and it’s a treat to watch the wildlife (peacocks and gazelles) up close from here. The wood terrace comes with a large couch, sun-loungers, and a small table and chairs.

Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort on Sir Bani Yas Island

Guests of Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island can choose from five dining venues such as The Palm (Middle Eastern cuisine), Amwaj (seafood), Al Shams (poolside and al fresco restaurant and bar serving Arabian specialties) at the Desert Islands Resort , Olio (Italian cuisine) at Al Yamm Villa Resort, and the safari-themed Savannah Grill (African cuisine) at the Al Sahel Villa Resort .

We dined at Savannah Grill and thoroughly enjoyed our meal of succulent spicy-sweet Peri Peri chicken with a side of rice and potato wedges followed by a sinful, moist chocolate cake. The service was friendly and prompt and we were glad to have gone with our server’s recommendation.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island

The breakfast spread was generous with a variety of smoothies and juices, cold cuts, smoked salmon, cheeses, fresh fruits, salads, breads, pastries, hot items like beans, sausages, and a live station to have your eggs made to order. Both the omelet and Eggs Benedict were outstanding.

Whether your idea of the perfect safari holiday is relaxing in your plunge pool as you watch the gazelles, going on a wildlife drive through the savannah, mountain biking through the rugged landscape, snorkeling to see the reefs, or horse riding along the beach, you’re spoilt for choice at Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts .

Guests can make use of complimentary transportation services between the three resorts- Al Sahel , Al Yamm and Desert Islands Resorts to make use of the resort’s pools, beach, and other activities. All activities should be booked in advance.

Nature and Wildlife Drive

The Nature and Wildlife Drive is an activity that must not be missed when staying at Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island, especially because this safari drive is the only one of its kind in the UAE and in this region, it’s rare to see so many species in their natural habitat. On the recommendation of the staff, we booked our Nature and Wildlife Drive at 6.00am and it was absolutely worth it to wake up that early. Our safari guide was friendly and full of information about the island, Wildlife Park, and the flora and fauna, as well as the conservation programs.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts

On our drive, we spotted herds of gazelles, Arabian Oryx, Barbary sheep, blackbuck, cheetahs, and South African giraffes, among other species. As the landscape shifted from dry, rugged wadis and wild savannahs to green pastures, it struck me; we were moving through an ecosystem that was something of a miracle for the region, but one that came to be thanks to the vision of an extraordinary leader. It was here, in the desert land of the Middle East, that species like the vulnerable Indian antelope or blackbuck were being conserved and bred and sent back to India so they may flourish in the wild again.

Other Activities

  • Visit the 6 th century AD Christian monastery on Sir Bani Yas Island or take a Culture and History Tour to learn about the history of Sir Bani Yas Island.
  • Go on a guided mountain bike or horse-riding tour of the island.
  • Snorkelling and kayaking trips are on offer for all levels of experience.
  • Try your hand at land sailing on Sir Bani Yas Island.
  • A variety of nature walks are available on the island depending on your fitness levels, some of which can be self-guided. On these walks you can spot giraffes, flamingoes, gazelles, and appreciate the topography of natural salt-domed hilltops, rock formations, a mangrove lagoon, and the Arabian savannah.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts

  • After a day of exploration, head to the Anantara Spa to unwind with a range of body and facial treatments and massages that draw from the heritage and culture of the region.
  • The Al Sahel Villa Resort also has a beautiful large common swimming pool for guests.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts

Who It’s For

Anantara Al Sahel Villa Resort is ideal for families, solo travelers, and couples who enjoy being in quiet, remote, natural environments and are looking to slow down, away from city life, for a few days. This place is obviously a treat if you love wildlife and are eager to learn about the indigenous species of Arabia. I can’t imagine a better experience for children who need to come to places like this to learn that animals belong in their natural habitats, running wild and free, instead of in zoos, no matter how glorified.

Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island Resorts

Even if you’re an active traveler, there are tons of activities from kayaking, mountain biking, and land sailing to horse riding, to keep you busy for days.

If your idea of a weekend getaway is incomplete without party-happy bars and clubs or if you’re a group that would like to blast loud music in your villa post sunset, this is most definitely not the place for you. Just like any other safari experience, the code of conduct on the island asks that you respect the nature and wildlife, and any activity that would disturb the animals is prohibited.

Why You Absolutely Should Not Miss a Trip to the UAE's only Wildlife Safari Sanctuary on Sir Bani Yas Island

Practical Information

While getting to Anantara Sir Bani Yas Island takes a while from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the long drive is most definitely worth it. Drive to Sir Bani Yas Island jetty in Jebel Dhanna on the E11 highway (3.5 hours from Dubai and 2.5 hours from Abu Dhabi, clearly signposted), take Exit 113 to park your car at the jetty and take the water taxi to the island. The water taxi is available at set times during the day, you’ll need to book your seats in advance with the resort once you’ve confirmed your stay.

This looks like a gorgeous place to stay - its so good to see animals in their natural habitat and not trapped in a zoo. When I was in the Bahamas I enjoyed seeing the Exhuma pigs in their natural environment and was pleased to see that efforts are being made to conserve and protect them too.

Tuesday 10th of October 2017

I have seen the photos of the Exhuma pigs in Bahamas and they look adorable! I hope to see them someday in person. Thanks for reading Mark!

Sunday 8th of October 2017

Definitely didn't know they had something like thi in the UAE too! The resort looks absolutely beautiful and although I'm mot too sure how thrilled I am to be in close proximity with a cheetah, I'd totally be down to visit and learn about the different species and wildlife conservation programs. Maybe even do a mountain bike tour too! Bookmarked!!

The cheetahs are in a separate area so they don't pose a threat to us, except to the gazelles when they're hunting. It's a worthy stop on your UAE travels.

Arabian Wolf

Canis lupus arabs.

The Arabian Wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf, which lives on the Arabian Peninsula. It is the smallest species of wolf. It is adapted to desert life and normally lives in small groups. Arabian Wolves do not usually live in large packs, and instead hunt in pairs or in groups of about three or four animals. Mainly carnivorous, they feed on hares, rodents, small ungulates, cats, sweet fruits, roadkill and other carrion. Because Arabian Wolves have been known to attack and eat any domestic animals up to the size of a goat, Bedouins and farmers often shoot them on sight, or poison or trap them.
