Wilson Ultra 105S CV Racket Review

It might seem like one of my favorite things to do is moan about rackets with large heads.

There are plenty of rackets that have felt my wrath for having a stupidly large racket head that doesn’t offer you any advantages.

I can understand what it’s like to be a beginner though and having a slightly bigger target to hit can be helpful.

The problem is, some rackets take this too far.

Thankfully, there are still some sensible options out there for beginners though.

One of them is the Wilson UItra 105S CV. This 285g racket has a 105 sq. inch head, which gives beginners a little extra string to aim for without being too big.

Custom Fittings

Discover your perfect racket and string combo!

At the end of the day, being a beginner is just a stepping stone to the next level, so why not play with a racket that prepares you for a higher standard of tennis?

On paper, the Ultra 105S is that racket.

I must admit, I have loved all the Wilson Ultras I have playtested so far.

They are such all-round rackets that do everything well and the Countervail technology is something that all of us at The Tennis Bros have been really impressed with.

Wilson carries the wonderful CV technology into the Ultra 105S, and I was fully expecting it to be equally impressive in this racket.

This racket is certainly set up for a beginner to lower-level intermediate player, with a 16 x 15 string pattern that certainly won’t suit the more advanced players.

What this means though is there is plenty of spacing between the strings.

This allows for more movement of the strings and will result in more spin.

Even if you’re doing the very basics of the swing, you will be more likely to see spin with this string pattern, and that can be great for encouraging players at the beginning of their tennis journey.

The Ultra 105S CV might be designed for a beginner, but that doesn’t stop Wilson from using the same technology they use in all their other rackets.

This stick benefits from  Countervail , which uses a special material to make playing smoother on your joints and muscles, as well as,  Power Rib, Crush Zone,  and  Parallel Drilling.

All these technologies are designed to give you a pain-free experience whilst getting the most out of your racket, and we’ve found they do an excellent job when we’ve tried them before.

The  105S CV  keeps the blue color scheme of the Ultra range, which I actually quite like.

I always like to bring up the color with the Ultra because I’ve seen a bunch of people saying they’re the ugliest rackets on the market!

I certainly don’t agree, but perhaps you can comment with your thoughts!

Whether it’s got a great color scheme or a terrible one, I took the Wilson Ultra 105S CV out nonetheless and put it through its paces.

Groundstrokes

7 out of 10

This is a completely different set up to what I’m used to. One of the reasons I really liked the Wilson Ultra Tour was the 18 x 20 string pattern and the control that gives you.

Obviously, the Ultra 105S CV is geared more towards a beginner, so it’s going to be much looser.

The very responsive feel of the racket took a bit of getting used to, but that is something that is useful for a beginner.

When you’re just starting out, you want to be able to feel what’s going on when you hit the ball, and the Wilson gives you the opportunity to do that.

On both the forehand and backhand, you can get a lot of string movement which does aid spin and gives you a bit of power, so all in all, it’s quite a nice racket for a beginner.

One of the main things about picking out a tennis racket is knowing that it’s not going to give you pain.

This is especially true when you’re just beginning tennis.

When you start out, your body is not used to the movements, so you must make sure you’re playing with something that you’re comfortable with.

The great thing about this racket is that the Countervail technology makes it exceptionally comfortable to play with.

I’ve been impressed with the Countervail technology in a number of different Wilson rackets, and the  Ultra 105S CV  is no different.

This stick is easy to manoeuvre and feels effortless when you contact the ball.

The setup of the racket isn’t right for a player like myself, but despite that, the Ultra felt comfortable throughout my playtest.

I always find these rackets difficult to score.

The Wilson Ultra 105S CV is a great beginner’s racket, but, as a tennis racket, it is pretty limited.

I’m going to sort my scoring system by writing a beginner’s tennis racket guide shortly, and this racket will certainly feature highly on that list.

Overall though, this racket is good up to a certain level, at which point you will need to move on to something more advanced.

Overall, I’ve given it a 7 out of 10 on the groundstrokes.

I usually find that the more beginner rackets are pretty difficult to volley with.

You’re mainly looking for stability and control when you’re at the net, but these rackets are designed for easy spin and power.

This mixture doesn’t really work when you have someone smashing balls at you, and the  Wilson Ultra 105S CV  is no different.

When you’re learning tennis though, this is not an issue.

The Ultra has a good-sized head to aim for and makes getting into position really easy.

One thing I like about the 105S is the weight is light enough to make it easy to handle for a beginner, but it is not so light that you feel like you’re swinging fresh air.

Just like the other Wilson rackets, the 105S CV does everything in moderation.

It is a lightweight racket, with a bigger head size, but it is not too light, and its head is not too big.

I found the other Ultra rackets to be good all-rounders, being strong at the net and from the back of the court, and the 105S CV is similar in that it does a job at both.

You’re never going to be able to volley with great confidence against advanced players with this racket, but for doing the basics, it is ideal.

It is important as a beginner that you feel comfortable manoeuvring your racket, and the Ultra is well balanced and easy to get into position.

I gave the Ultra another 7 out of 10 at the net, which is a very good score for a beginner’s racket.

Despite its light weight, it has decent stability which gives it an edge over some of its competitors.

As you would expect from a lightweight racket, it has good manoeuvrability, and this allows players to easily find the right positions to hit their volleys – a good quality for a beginner’s racket.

The serve is a particularly difficult shot to master and one where I think it pays to have a sensible racket.

If you’re playing with one of these super light rackets with a huge head you might have a big target to aim for but getting the ball in the court might be difficult!

The Wilson once again proved to be very adept at doing what it needed to do.

The balance felt right in my hand, and it swung effortlessly, giving me good racket head speed to attack the ball with.

Everything was still a little bit loose to generate the kind of power I would normally expect, but that’s not a big issue.

As a beginner, you would prefer something that gives you a little bit of ping and some added power.

The last thing you would want is the kind of super tight, board that I like to play with.

The  Ultra 105S CV  is good because it gives you the little bit of extra help you need as a beginner, but not too much.

You don’t want the racket to do all the work for you, because you need to learn to develop power and spin for yourself, and the Ultra allows you to do that.

I’m going to be boring and give the Wilson Ultra 105S CV another 7 out of 10 for the serve.

It’s fairly typical of this range of rackets in that it’s very consistent.

They generally do everything you want them to do pretty well, with minimal fuss and maximum comfort.

As you can probably tell, I’m quite a fan of the Wilson Ultra range and I would certainly give this racket a try if I was just starting tennis.

You may have guessed where this was going with all the 7s and so I’ve given the  Wilson Ultra 105S CV  a 7 out of 10!

I feel this accurately reflects its all-round quality as a beginner racket.

It will give beginner players a good platform from which to learn and proved to be solid on all shots during the course of the playtest.

As an advanced player, it’s not a racket I would use myself, but I saw many of the good characteristics I enjoyed in the Wilson Ultra 100 CV and Wilson Ultra Tour in this racket.

It is manoeuvrable yet solid for its weight, with excellent balance and I think this provides beginners with an excellent platform.

From the back of the court it gives players access to lots of spin potential and plenty of easy power that a beginner really needs.

It does not do this at the expense of control though. With many beginner rackets, control is none existent, but that is not the case with the Ultra 105S.

Of course, it’s not the most control-oriented racket in the world, but it wasn’t too bad in this area.

I think overall, the Wilson Ultra 105S CV is a very solid racket for beginner tennis players, and I’ve tried to reflect that in my overall score of 7 out of 10.

Hopefully, I’ll be putting together a list of my favorite beginner’s rackets very soon, and I expect this racket will feature on it.

A Classical & Christ-Centered Education

Classical Christian Education

Classical Christian Education

Christ-centered.

In all its levels, programs, and teaching, Logos School seeks to: Teach all subjects as parts of an integrated whole with the Scriptures at the center (II Timothy 3:16-17); Provide a clear model of the biblical Christian life through our staff and board (Matthew 22:37-40); Encourage every student to begin and develop his relationship with God the Father through Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:18-20, Matthew 19:13-15).

In all its levels, programs, and teaching, Logos School seeks to: Emphasize grammar, logic, and rhetoric in all subjects (see definitions below); Encourage every student to develop a love for learning and live up to his academic potential; Provide an orderly atmosphere conducive to the attainment of the above goals.

Grammar : The fundamental rules of each subject. Logic : The ordered relationship of particulars in each subject. Rhetoric : How the grammar and logic of each subject may be clearly expressed.

What Do We Mean by Classical?

In the 1940’s the British author, Dorothy Sayers, wrote an essay titled The Lost Tools of Learning . In it she not only calls for a return to the application of the seven liberal arts of ancient education, the first three being the “Trivium” – grammar, logic, rhetoric, she also combines three stages of children’s development to the Trivium. Specifically, she matches what she calls the “Poll-parrot” stage with grammar, “Pert” with logic, and “Poetic” with rhetoric (see The Lost Tools Chart ). At Logos, the founding board members were intrigued with this idea of applying a classical education in a Christian context. Doug Wilson, a founding board member explained the classical method further in his book, Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning. Logos School has been committed to implementing this form of education since the school’s inception.

Judge finds Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson needs conservatorship due to mental decline

L OS ANGELES (AP) — A judge found Thursday that Beach Boys founder and music luminary  Brian Wilson  should be in a court conservatorship to manage his personal and medical decisions because of what his doctor calls a “major neurocognitive disorder.”

At a hearing, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Gus T. May approved the  petition filed by the 81-year-old Wilson’s family and inner circle  after the death in January of his wife,  Melinda Ledbetter Wilson , who handled most of his tasks and affairs.

“I find from clear and convincing evidence that a conservatorship of the person is necessary,” May said at the brief hearing. The judge said that evidence shows that Wilson consents to the arrangement and lacks the capacity to make health care decisions.

May appointed two longtime Wilson representatives, publicist Jean Sievers and manager LeeAnn Hard, as his conservators.

There were no significant objections raised.

Two of Wilson’s seven children, Carnie and Wendy Wilson from singing group Wilson Phillips, asked through their attorney that all the children be added to a group text chain about their father, and that all be consulted on medical decisions. The judge granted the stipulations.

The two daughters had asked for a delay in the process at an April 30 hearing while issues were worked out, but it was clear at the hearing that consensus had been reached.

A doctor’s declaration filed with the petition in February said Wilson has a “major neurocognitive disorder,” is taking medication for dementia, and “is unable to properly provide for his own personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter.”

Sievers and Hard have had a close relationship with Wilson and his wife for many years. In a report, Robert Frank Cipriano, an attorney appointed by the court to represent Wilson’s interests, said Wilson acknowledged the need for the conservatorship, and said he trusts the judgement of the two women.

Cipriano’s report to the court said he visited Wilson at his “impeccably well maintained residence in Beverly Hills,” where he lives with two daughters and a long-term live-in caregiver.

Wilson can move around with help from a walker and the caregiver, Cipriano said, and he has a good sense of who he is, where he is, and when it is, but could not name his children beyond the two that live with him.

He said Wilson was “mostly difficult to understand and gave very short responses to questions and comments.”

Cipriano said he approved of the conservatorship, mostly because of Wilson’s general consent.

Wilson credited Ledbetter with stabilizing his  famously troubled life  after they met in the mid-1980s and married in 1995.

Wilson, his seven children, his caregiver, and his doctors consulted before the petition was filed, according to a family statement at the time. It said the decision was to ensure “there will be no extreme changes” and that “Brian will be able to enjoy all of his family and friends and continue to work on current projects.”

Judges in California can appoint a conservator for a person, their finances — referred to as the estate — or both, as was the case with  Britney Spears . Spears’ case brought attention — much of it negative — to conservatorships, known in some states as guardianships, and prompted legislative changes. Wilson’s case is closer to the typical traditional use of a conservatorship, which very often is installed for an older person in irreversible mental decline.

The Wilson petition did not seek a conservator of the estate because his assets are in a trust, with Hard as a trustee.

Deeply revered and acclaimed as a co-founder, producer, arranger and chief songwriter of the Beach Boys and a masterful innovator of vocal harmony, Wilson struggled with mental health and substance abuse issues that upended his career in the 1960s.

He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988 along with his bandmates, including his brothers Carl and Dennis and his cousin Mike Love.

1. Sources : Papyrus St.-Petersburg 1116A, P.Moscow 4658 & P.Carlsberg 6. 2. King Khety III and his son Merikare. 3. The text of the Instruction to Merikare . 4. Notes. 5. Egyptian sacred literature. 6. Egyptian wisdom literature.

1. The Sources

► discovery The text of the Instruction to Merikare was preserved in three fragmentary papyri. The oldest, dating from the second half of the XVIIIth Dynasty (ca. 1539 - 1292 BCE), the so-called "Papyrus St.-Petersburg 1116A", is the most complete, but also the most corrupt, with numerous lacunae and many scribal errors. Papyrus Moscow 4658 dates from the end of the XVIIIth Dynasty, while Papyrus Carlsberg 6 may even be later. An English translation was made by Gardiner (1914) & Erman (1927). A new comparative study of the available sources was done by Volten (1945). Lichtheim (1976), Helck (1977), Brunner (1991) & Parkinson (1997) made recent translations. Volten , 1945, p.3. The following temporal layers may be discerned :

► literary features In the First Intermediate Period (ca. 2198 -1938 BCE), the stela became the carrier of a short autobiography, and equipped with an offering scene and its adjacent prayer. This was a memorial, the repository of a person's life, a succinct summary of achievement. The royal instruction was the second literary legacy of this transitional period :  the testament of a departing King to his son and successor. The Instruction to Merikare mentions the instruction of an earlier King Khety. It is therefore only the earliest preserved work of this type. The work has no "fully sustained compositional coherence as found in comparable works of the Twelfth Dynasty" ( Lichtheim , p.98). Indeed, the same topic reappears in different places and a buildup is deflected. However, an overall plan is present, although it is loose. Compared with that of Ptahhotep , Khety's instruction has a compositional structure which is less "constructed". On the one hand, the sentences do not "bind" in the same way and although the orational style is used, the author introduces spontaneous associations which are secundary and move away from the main stream of the mindset. On the other hand, the address is more personal and apparently in tune with the psychology of his son, whereas the Maxims of Good Discourse are a general, more standardized treatise on wisdom, expressing the teachings of any (noble) father to his (accomplished) son. Does this suggest the work is indeed a composition made by the King himself ? The salient literary features are :

2 King Khety III and his son Merikare

At the end of the Old Kingdom, the stable pharaonic system slowly broke down. During the nine decades of the reign of the last Pharaoh of the VIth Dynasty, Pepi II (ca.2246 - 2152) -the longest reign in history- the way was paved for the collapse of the Old Kingdom under the pressure of internal weakening. A folk tale of the New Kingdom depicts Pepi II as a weak personality with abnormal tendencies ... No serious dangers threatened Egypt from Western Asia or Nubia, although attacks on Egyptian expeditions seems to have been more frequent. One important factor was the increase in the number of cults freed by royal decree from taxes and other obligations, placing a burden on the royal treasury, diminishing is power and majesty (cf. the number of buildings built). Low Nile floods are also to be noted, as well as a climate change ca. 2200 BCE (probably a world-wide small ice age).  "But the decisive factor was that the archaic, patriarchal structure of the adminstration was no longer adequate to meet the more specialized demands of the era and thus not suited in all respects to the tenor of the times." - Hornung , 1999, p.41. The weak administration was no longer able to run the country as a whole and the consequences were economical difficulties, famine and struggle for life itself (while Pharaoh made enormous gifts to the temples). Economic need occupied the center of attention in biographical inscriptions which emerged in this period. This situation triggered two important phenomena :

objective : local potentates acquired the necessary goods for themselves and their subjects. Raids on neighboring regions and the peasants were common. The latter therefore formed armed bands. Safety was lost. Art sank to a provincial level. In the walled homes of the rulers of the nomes (the nomarchs) an urban middle class was formed , focused on the accumulation of private property . These "nedjes" (a pejorative word for "small") designated these new "bourgeois" who made the cities into political centers ;

After Pepi II, the construction of pyramids stopped and in rapid successions at least a dozen Pharaoahs resided in Memphis and nominally ruled the entire land. What exactely happened is unknown (for this period is obscure), but at the end Egypt was divided between the "kings" of two major nomes : Heracleopolis (IXth & Xth Dynasty) in the North (Fayum & Lower Egypt) & Thebes (XIth Dynasty) in the South (Upper Egypt and Nubia). The unity broke up and no great monuments were erected to consolidate the power of the state. The Theban ruling family assumed the royal titulary at about the same time as the nomarchs of Herakleopolis. This fundamental political division initiates the First Intermediate Period, which would last for about a century (ca. 2198 -1938 BCE) . The "House of Khety" ruled Lower Egypt. In general, the southern kingdom was more vital than the northern, but the latter excelled in cultural refinement. "Statues of the Theban rulers were set up in the temple of Heqaib on the island of Elephantine, and we must assume that because of this tie with the south, the Thebans had at their disposal, from the very beginning, seasoned Nubian soldiers who would lend considerable combat strength to the Theban army in the warfare that ensued to reunite the land." - Hornung , 1999, p.45. After some years of peace Mentuhotpe I initiated the decisive battle with Lower Egypt, ruled by Merikare. This attempt was thwarted, and his successor lost the throne. Although the correct sequence of rulers is unknown, the following list of rulers is the reconstruction by Hornung (1999), who's chronology was followed : Southern Kings (Thebes - IXth & Xth Dynasties) :

Mentuhotpe III (Nebtawyre) : 1945 - 1938

Northern Kings (Herakleopolis - between 2160 - 1980 BCE - XIth Dynasty) :

Merikare's unknown successor, probably Ity

► the beginning of the Middle Kingdom The last Pharaoh of the XIth Dynasty was Nebtawyre Mentuhotpe III (ca. 1945 - 1938 BCE). He probably usurped the throne, for he is missing from the king-lists. His mother was a commoner. It is possible he was not a member of the royal family. Of his seven year reign, little is known. He undertook building projects and dispatched his vizier Amenemhat to head an army of workers at the quarries of the Wadi Hammamat for his intended royal tomb. There is a consensus that this is the same Pharaoh Amenemhat who founded the XXIIth Dynasty, although there is no reliable information available. Around 1980 BCE, Egypt was again in the grasp of a single ruler after a century of disunity.

(1) the "heart" is the vehicle of all mental, intentional, volitional states - Ptahhotep speaks of the "hot of heart" (cf. the Lexicon of the Maxims) ; (2) "the god" and "god" may be used interchangeably and the definite article has no bearing on meaning but is a matter of style - here we have systematically written "the god" (cf. the Lexicon of the Maxims) ; (3) the righteous person is not stopped by the tribunal of Osiris and may enter the sky, while the one who was not prudent and endulged himself (in heavy drinking, brawling and conflict) is left by the Foremost of the Westeners ; (4) the "back of the house" is the rear, the quaters of the women, children and servants ; (5) the "place of secrets" is that part of the temple where only the priest were allowed to enter ; (6) those who proffer libations, for water is the source of all purity & life ; (7) "sArii" has been translated as "oppressed" (Bear), "der Bedrängte, Notleidende, Bedürftige" (Hannig), and "wD" as "providing justice" to the aggrieved - I go along with Lichtheim, who interprets the passage as envisaging an overall judgment ; (8) these are the spirits of light (the "AX" or "Akh") : the justified deceased, the justified ancestors, the gods and goddesses ; (9) Volten remarks that the "old men" mentioned suggest that "Der Vater Merikares hat also etwas mehr als 20 Jahre regiert" (Volten : 32) - for Ptahhotep, "Swt" means "neighbors, friends, helpers", but here "recruits" (Wilson) is more appropriate ; (10) "kfA Hr sStA" has been translated as "reveal the mysteries", except by Gardiner who is followed here - Lichtheim has "observe" ; (11) it is profitable for him ; (12) Khety confesses that he too strayed from the path of god, i.e. the way of righteousness ; (13) "Two-Fish Channel" also occurs in Papyrus Westcar (IX, 16) and is the name of the Nile branch in the nome of Letopolis, i.e. the soutern-most part of the Canopic branch. Here it denotes the southern boundary of the western Delta ; (14) "the Lake" (like the "great green") is another word for the Mediterranean sea ; (15) or inner islands ;  (16) the Nile will not fail to inundate the land ; (17) Kees insists that Hebenu was a metropolis of the sixteenth nome of Upper Egypt - "Horusway, Horusways, the Ways of Horus" are synonymous with the border fortress of Sile, where the road to Palestine began ; (18) the east bank of the twenty-second nome was recovered by the Heracleopolitans and brought under cultivation up to the Fayum ; (19) Lichtheim understands "dyke" as a metaphor for "protection", for a real dyke from Heracleopolis to the Delta is deemed impossible ; (20) "to be on someone's water" means to be loyal to someone ; (21) Re in his aspect of creator ; (22) the cult statues of the gods carried in procession during the festivals ; (23) god is aware of what people do, he is near, witnesses one's actions and repays one likewise ; (24) the primordial monster defeated when creation emerged in the first time (zep tepi) ; (25) refers to the story of the destruction of mankind which was inscribed on three royal tombs of the XIXth Dynasty (the Book of the Heavenly Cow ) ; (26) those that remain in the following of Pharaoh are gods themselves ; (27) considering what the king has done stimulates his son to emulate and surpass him.

Kyren Wilson considering options after breakaway snooker tour offer

Cazoo World Snooker Championship 2024 - Day Nine

Kyren Wilson has confirmed he has received a firm offer to play in events away from World Snooker Tour and is currently keeping his options open over his future.

Rumours of a breakaway tour – with significant guaranteed money for players – were circling when the World Championship began and have grown louder over the event.

Matchroom Sport chairman Barry Hearn addressed the threat , while Judd Trump confirmed he was contacted but rejected the approach.

Wilson has also received an offer, but was not so clear on whether he would remain with WST or jump ship.

Asked if he had been contacted with an offer by rival tour backers, he said: ‘Yeah. I think a lot of the players have. It’s a good position for snooker. I think it shows the strength and the popularity and the demand.

‘It’s something that’s probably never really been seen before and it’s very interesting. It’s obviously turning a few heads. I think it’s exciting times for snooker.’

The nature of the much-discussed new tour is not yet entirely clear and how it will sit alongside the World Snooker Tour, but Shaun Murphy called on WST bosses to not let anyone who leaves the main tour to be able to continue to compete in any WST events.

2024 Cazoo World Snooker Championship - Day 5

Wilson is weighing up his options and says his priority remains becoming world champion, which may well no longer be on the table if he were to join a rival tour.

‘You know, I’m not on any side,’ he said. ‘Obviously my priority is to be a world champion. I want to become a world champion. I want those opportunities.

‘But then on the flipside, you do have to take things into account. You have got families to provide for. We have never had these opportunities before. I think it is something that players do need to think very carefully about.

‘Obviously I have come into the World Championship fully focused on this tournament. What will be will be for me. I am very comfortable in my life, where my career is at. Like I say, for me it’s just a bonus to be in the position to have these opportunities.’

Asked whether there was a possibility he would not be playing WST events next season, he said: ‘I wouldn’t say there was a possibility. I haven’t given it much time or much consideration. Perhaps it is something I will look at more seriously after the World Championship.

‘That’s something I will sit down with the family and analyse. I am so far off what I want to achieve. I have not landed any Triple Crown events. I have come so close. I have said previously I wouldn’t be happy if I won just one world title. I still want those opportunities. I need to sit down and analyse what is best for my snooker.

‘One of the things that is obviously at the forefront of my mind is still having the opportunity to become a world champion. That’s a real big thing in terms of a future decision. So it’s something I won’t take lightly.’

When Lainey Wilson played Australia for the first time in March, she made sure to meet the country ’s animal ambassadors: She held a koala; she pet a kangaroo. But it wasn’t all furry fun.

“I got crapped on by a bird twice,” Wilson says in her thick Louisiana drawl, shaking her head in bemused disbelief. “In the exact same spot. I heard it was good fortune, so I was like, ‘Go ahead. Do what you got to do, bird.’ ”

When “Save Me,” her urgent duet with Jelly Roll, reached No. 1 on Billboard ’s Country Airplay chart in December, only six weeks had passed since her solo hit, the coming-of-age tale “Watermelon Moonshine,” had summited the list — the shortest stint between No. 1s for a female artist in the chart’s 34-year history. “Watermelon Moonshine” appeared on Wilson’s most recent album, 2022’s Bell Bottom Country (Broken Bow Records/BMG), which took home both the Academy of Country Music (ACM) and Country Music Association Awards for album of the year, as well as the Grammy for best country album — only the ninth record ever to complete that trifecta. And at November’s CMA Awards, Wilson became the first woman to win entertainer of the year since Taylor Swift in 2011 and the first artist since Garth Brooks in 1991 to win best new artist one year and entertainer of the year the next.

At times, the rush has been overwhelming. “I do feel like the 10 years of nothing happening slightly prepared me, but I don’t think you can ever really fully prepare yourself for everything coming at once, and you’re just trying to hold on for dear life,” Wilson says.

One line in particular from Wilson’s acceptance speech for female artist of the year at the ACM Awards last May encapsulates her personal credo: “If you’re going to be a dreamer, you better be a doer.” And Wilson is nothing if not a doer. On this late-March morning, she has flown 14 hours on a commercial flight from Sydney to Los Angeles, landing at LAX at 7:30 a.m. and coming straight to Pasadena for this interview and its associated all-day photo shoot, even showering on location instead of first stopping at her hotel.

Getting a caffeine jolt from an iced brown sugar oatmeal shaken espresso from Starbucks, she sits on a bench in the lush backyard as birds chirp. Clad in a cozy, loose-fitting sweatsuit, Wilson pulls her knees up against her chest to shield against the slight morning chill. She’s not wearing any makeup, her long blonde hair sticking out from under a ball cap, her bare feet still sunburned from sitting in a Sydney park.

Wilson’s relaxed vibe contrasts markedly with the electric buzz she says she’s still feeling from the reception she received in Australia. “All I could think about was little 9-year-old Lainey just wanting to write music about my life and how in the world could somebody on the other end of the world relate to it,” she reflects. “It just goes to show you that we’re all a lot more alike than you think.”

Growing up in tiny Baskin, La. (population 200), 9 was a big age for Wilson. It was when she wrote her first song, “Lucky Me,” while at a sleepover with a friend; when she got her first horse; when she went to the Grand Ole Opry for the first time, where she saw Bill Anderson, Crystal Gayle, Phil Vassar and Little Jimmy Dickens. “My daddy actually still has the ticket stub,” she says. “He put it in the lockbox.” And it was when she first knew that one day she would perform on that stage. “My sister was asleep on the church pew like she could care less,” she says. “I remember eating popcorn and thinking, ‘Oh, I’m going to do this.’ ”

By 2011, Wilson had moved to Nashville, where her career as a singer-songwriter started germinating. But with a traditional sound out of step with the pop-dominated country in vogue, she had to survive years of setbacks before reaping her first rewards. She hit a low point in 2014: On her third year living in a camper trailer, career stagnant, the man she was dating impregnated another woman, and Wilson’s producer, who was letting her live in his studio parking lot, died. “It was a lot of dark moments in my life,” she recalls, “and I just felt not worthy.”

(Years later, she would draw on that challenging time when she collaborated with Jelly Roll on “Save Me” and its desperate yearning-for-salvation theme. “I love Lainey’s ability to be vulnerable, and I wondered if that would translate on the song,” Jelly Roll says. “Lainey has such an authentic voice [that] I felt if she could connect with the song, then she could share these lyrics from a woman’s point of view.”)

Still, even amid those struggles, there were bright spots, like when her pal Luke Combs cut a song they co-wrote for an EP he released before he got signed. (Wilson, who considers herself first and foremost a songwriter, has also co-written songs cut by Chrissy Metz, Flatland Cavalry and Thompson Square, among others.) While working on her songwriting, she also started developing a signature country-hippie look, with bell bottoms and a wide-brimmed hat, and her sound, which combined traditional country with a slight rock edge. Around 2017 — the year she inked her Sony Music Publishing deal and a year before she signed with Broken Bow — she began tagging her social media content with #bellbottomcountry. “I just felt like during that time people were having a hard time getting it — everything from the way that I dress to the way that I sound,” Wilson says. So she came up with her own clear explanation: “country with a flare.”

In an era when women still struggle to get airplay on terrestrial country radio, that has been no small feat. As her popularity has grown, Wilson has flexed different facets of her artistry — and scored radio hits — by both releasing solo songs and featuring on duets with male artists. After “Things a Man Oughta Know” became her first Country Airplay No. 1 in September 2021, she featured on Cole Swindell’s “Never Say Never,” which reached No. 1 in April 2022. The following April, her “Heart Like a Truck” peaked at No. 2, as did “wait in the truck,” her collaboration with HARDY the same month. She then returned to the top spot with “Watermelon Moonshine” and “Save Me” in October and December, respectively.

“Honestly, there was not a grand strategy of alternating singles with collabs,” Loba says. “Quite simply, it has been those acts reaching out to Lainey with great songs she connected with, and the timing has fortunately worked out well.”

As Wilson’s career gained momentum, Loba says that — in addition to making sure her music was where it needed to be — her team focused on stressing Wilson’s authenticity, which was on ample display in her charming, gracious Grammy acceptance speech earlier this year. “She’s not copying anyone else,” Loba says. “At the end of the day, everyone can see her heart and is cheering for her.”

Long-awaited success hasn’t diminished Wilson’s ambition — when asked if she wants to headline stadiums in five years, she answers three — but she is temporarily pulling back on the throttle just a little.

“As this career grows, I feel like there’s a lot of other jobs that come along with it,” Wilson says. Her expanding list of brand partnerships includes Wrangler, American Greetings, Stanley, Tractor Supply and Coors — and she even appeared on the fifth and most recent season of Yellowstone in late 2022. (Wilson doesn’t know what her future on the show holds, but she would like to return if her schedule allows.) This summer, Wilson will open a three-story bar, Bell Bottoms Up, in Nashville’s entertainment district in partnership with TC Restaurant Group.

“She won’t say no, so we have to for her,” Loba says. “Since we signed her, she has not left a moment unscheduled. Every time I see her, the only question I [usually] have is ‘How are you?’ We both come from farm families. We’re not taught how to rest in farm families. From management to agency to label to publicist, I think we’re getting better at creating that space for her.”

“Last year was a hard year,” Wilson says. “It was the best year, and I don’t know if we’ll ever have a year like that again. But everybody was tired by the end of it — not just me, but my whole crew. Everything we’ve said we would do, we did it. And then bigger opportunities would come, and you can’t pass them up either.”

Wilson says she would “love to collaborate with Victoria Monét,” especially after seeing her perform at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy party in February. “She just turned it on,” Wilson continues. “At the Grammys, her [victory] speeches were from the heart. I was like, ‘I want to be her friend.’ ” And she hopes to work with new pal Lana Del Rey, though she hasn’t written for Del Rey’s country album that’s due later this year.

As the demands on her time increase, Wilson is leaning into time-honored practices to help her cope. In Australia, she started waking up an hour early to pray, journal and meditate. “I do sound a little hippie-dippy, but it works for me,” she says. “Just kind of starting my day with an attitude of gratitude.”

She vows to do the same when her WME-booked Country’s Cool Again tour starts May 31 in Nashville. “I have no choice because it has made me feel so good and grounded,” she says. When following that routine, “the shows have gone better. I feel more levelheaded. I got to treat myself like an athlete.”

Over the last two years, one word seems to keep coming up around Wilson.

“Whether I’m running into somebody and they’re saying, ‘Man, your life has been a whirlwind,’ or whether the word’s coming out of my mouth, or I open a book and see the word ‘whirlwind,’ it just seems to be surrounding me,” she says. “Whirlwinds cause turbulence that cause chaos. But at the end of the day, you figure out how to come back to the center.” Which is why it’s also the title of her third full-length Broken Bow album, out Aug. 23 .

She describes Whirlwind as “the Western sister of Bell Bottom Country ,” and lyrically more “introspective” than previous efforts: “I feel like it’s got a little bit more character [and] cinematic storytelling.” Wilson teamed again with producer Jay Joyce (who produced Bell Bottom Country and its predecessor, 2021’s Sayin’ What I’m Thinkin’ ), but in a sign of her increasing clout, her road band plays on Whirlwind instead of the cast of studio musicians who typically appear on country albums. “We’ve played close to 400 shows in the past two-and-a-half years. I knew they could do it,” Wilson explains. “I felt like that’s where the magic was going to come from this time.”

“It’s important for me to be proud of where I come from and the way that I was raised, but not dwell on it too much — because who really cares? Let’s take that and move forward with it,” she says. “That’s just how I like to view life. You just got to keep trucking along.”

While she has nothing against a light-hearted ditty — and has written a few herself, including “Hold My Halo” and “Straight Up Sideways”— as a songwriter, Wilson prioritizes depth. “I think about the songs that made me fall in love with country music and made a difference in my life,” she says, citing Brooks’ “The Thunder Rolls,” Keith Whitley’s “When You Say Nothing at All,” Reba McEntire’s “Fancy” and Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss’ “Whiskey Lullaby.” “I just think, ‘I’ve got to do that.’ Of course, there’s nothing wrong with a beer-drinking song, but even with that, I think you can dive a little deeper and get people to think a little bit.”

Listeners relate to the authenticity of Wilson’s writing, says her musical hero, Dolly Parton. “Even though Lainey is breathtakingly beautiful to look at, her true beauty comes from deep down where songs are born and written,” Parton tells Billboard . “People feel her heart and soul in what she writes because she knows what they know, feels what they feel and has the gift to present it in words. God bless her. He has and he will.”

“Lainey goes, ‘I hate bullies. I’m going to go to his school and do show and tell and sing some songs and say what an amazing little guy he is… I can make a difference,’ ” Loba recalls. “She has just won [best country album], and the night after, she’s sitting there concerned about my nephew.”

Wilson is a people-pleaser by nature. Say something she agrees with and she looks straight at you, nods and says emphatically, “100%.” The effect is powerful — and that natural empathy has helped her connect with both fans and fellow artists. “Lainey is someone you can get in the foxhole with and get raw and real,” Jelly Roll says. “She is also a very grounded person, so if I’m ever overwhelmed, I know I can call her.”

Wilson attributes that down-to-earth sensibility to her upbringing, though she admits she has had to work to maintain it as her star has risen: “I have fought tooth and nail to make sure that I am doing the things that make me feel like me, [like] calling my family at home, checking to see how the farm’s going and see if Daddy has planted his crops, [checking in] on my nephews, hanging out with my boyfriend on the porch and those kinds of things.”

She went public with her relationship with former pro football player Devlin “Duck” Hodges at the 2023 ACM Awards, but otherwise vociferously protects the privacy of herself and those around her. In her personal life, too, Wilson has looked to Parton — who has spoken about the importance of keeping some things to yourself when you’re sharing so much else with the world — as a guide.

“I think that was probably [about] her husband,” Wilson says. “When it comes to mine and Duck’s relationship, there’s going to be some things that we can’t escape and people are going to say and do whatever, but me and him are on the same page about the less we put out there, the less that we’re going to have to deal with people making anything up and saying anything. We want to keep that as sacred as we possibly can between me and him, and so far, it has worked for us.”

Parton has faith in Wilson’s ability to navigate fame’s tricky waters. “In this business, as in any other, you have to sacrifice and compromise to get things done,” she says. “But I believe Lainey, like myself, will never sacrifice her principles and values for a dollar bill.”

Another icon, Brooks, has also encouraged Wilson. After winning CMA entertainer of the year, she anticipated naysayers who believed her ascent had happened too quickly and that even her own doubts would creep in, but Brooks helped silence that inner critic. “He said, ‘I feel like you’ve got the keys to country music and you’re going to be driving it for a while.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, Lord. I hope I don’t wreck this thing,’ ” she jokes. “But when somebody like him says that to you, it does make you feel like, ‘OK, yeah, that imposter syndrome can just go kick rocks.’ ”

With that mindset, it’s easy to believe Wilson can do anything — and to understand why, at the end of the day, she sees herself as a cowgirl: rough and ready, and hanging on to the rollicking ride she’s on. “Being a cowgirl is digging in. Getting up, dusting your jeans off and not being scared to get your hands dirty,” she says. “I’m from a long line of cowgirls.”

One of the reasons I really liked the Wilson Ultra Tour was the 18 x 20 string pattern and the control that gives you. The very responsive feel of the racket took a bit of getting used to, but that is something that is useful for a beginner.
