Re: windsor tourist is this a good bike, whittierider.

But further, the distributor that sells Windsor has had a ton of other problems besides the frames themselves, ranging from easily chipped paint to things assembled improperly to false advertising and the worst customer service in the industry.  I would never send a friend to them.  I know there are some people who are happy with the product; but this company has had a disproportionate number of very angry customers.
Your assumption is that they make a bunch of standard products, all with the same materials and quality controls, and then a bike company comes along and says, "We want 10,000 of that model there," so they slap their name on it and a bike goes out the door that's identical to one going out with another name and a higher price on it.  That's not what's happening! Each of the three major frame manufacturers in Taiwan is able to make whatever the customer company asks for.  They may have a high-end carbon frame being made on one line, and next to it, under the same roof, they're making garbage.
As a prominent man in the industry who has traveled to and visited all these factories said, just because the manufacturer has shown that they can make a good bike doesn't mean every bike they make is good.  A bike company may come along and ask for a frame and negotiate a price too low to make it right, and the manufacturer obliges and gives them the garbage they asked for with the idea that the people who buy this off brand won't know the difference-- at least not until it's too late.

Windsor Castle is the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, and the Queen of England’s favourite.

Located on a scenic cliff-top location above the river Thames, it makes the perfect destination for our gentle bike tour. After meeting at Windsor and Eton Central train station, we jump on board our comfy bikes to begin our tour.

The bike tour around the scenic Thames Valley is a flat and largely traffic-free 8 miles (13km) through country lanes and designated bike tracks.  There is plenty of time to stop and take photos en-route.

The tour finishes back in central Windsor, a short walk from the castle, the towns various shopping & eating destinations or trains stations for your return to London.

A truly historic day out guaranteed!

It was just me and 2 other guests, it was nice to have such a small group. We got nearly undivided attention from the guide and the wineries we visited which were Foppiano, Rodney Strong, and Mutt Lynch. Willow had so much regional and historical knowledge to share. I personally could have biked a further distance and done more wineries, especially since Mutt Lynch was essentially back at the bike shop, but I realize Ace It has to serve a variety of customers. One piece of feedback, for the cost of the tour lunch should be included and not extra. Still a no brainer, to give 5 stars as a review! Read more Written June 23, 2022

Freda, who led the tour, had all of our bikes set up and ready to go when we met up. The four mile biking was great for beginners as well as seasoned bikers. The views of the bay were beautiful. The four mile hike along the coast of the Pacific was spectacular as well. It was not at all vigorous and anybody could do it. Phenomenal views, although unfortunately no whale sightings. Five Boro Bike Tour takes over NYC. Here's why over 32,000 cyclists from around the world rode 40 miles.

By Kristie Keleshian , Zinnia Maldonado

Updated on: May 5, 2024 / 8:59 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK --  New York City's Five Boro Bike Tour is the largest charitable bike ride in the United States. It starts in Manhattan, then covers 40 miles across the five boroughs to end on Staten Island.

Five Boro Bike Tour route map

untitled-design.png

The first wave of cyclists started at 7:30 a.m. from the intersection of Franklin and Church Street in Tribeca. The last wave left at 10:25 a.m.

The route then heads up into the Bronx, over to Queens, back down to Brooklyn and ends at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island, where riders can then catch a ferry back to Manhattan.

"It's 40 miles and I enjoy every minute of it," said Anthony Maynard, from Columbia, South Carolina.

"It was a great destination and it was a tour, not a race, so we thought that it would be a first thing for us. We are not cyclists, so we've trained some," Nichole Muller, of Texas, said at the starting line.

Many riders arrived Saturday to pick up their bibs and to attend the annual blessing of the bikes.

"One of the reasons people come here, certainly not the only reason, but one of the reasons is people are aware of how dangerous this is, riding a bike in New York, and they come to pray for their own safety and ask us to pray with them for their own safety," said Patrick Malloy, Dean of Cathedral St. Catherine of the Divine.

There is no official end time, but most riders should be done by the evening.

"We're riding a tandem bike together, so that will be interesting just to take it to another level. We practiced yesterday in Central Park, we're good New York, we're good," added Meredith Mitsifer, of Arizona. "This is going to be amazing, I can't wait to see New York in a whole different way."

Cycling for a cause

The Five Boro Bike Tour represents all ages and abilities.

"It feels like a microcosm of the world," said Bike New York President and CEO Ken Podziba.

More than 32,000 cyclists take part in the charity ride, which raises money for Bike New York's free bike education programs. The nonprofit teaches children and adults how to ride, as well as bike safety.

"I'm riding on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation," said Steve Shiffman, whose wife has cystic fibrosis.

"We wanted to bring awareness to ovarian cancer," said Nicole Moler, with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition in Dallas, Texas.

Participants from around the world say the event is a rare chance to explore the city in this way.

"I think a lot of people that maybe are not familiar with the city, they think of New York as just Manhattan, but there's so much more to New York, and I think doing it on a bike is probably the most unique way you can possibly do it," said Will Stafford, from Virginia.

Five Boro Bike Tour road closures

Of course, the bike tour also meant street, bridge and tunnel closures for drivers across the city.

The Staten Island-bound lower level of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge was closed from 2 a.m. to 7 p.m. The upper level remained open in both directions.

The Robert F. Kennedy Bridge exit ramp to the southbound FDR Drive closed from 7:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The approach from the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel to the westbound Gowanus/Brooklyn Queens Expressway closed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

See the full list of road closures here.

New York Today

The 5 boro bike tour: tough to arrange, tough to finish.

The organizer of the event, which takes place on Sunday, says it’s harder to stage than the New York City Marathon.

James Barron

By James Barron

Good morning. It’s Friday. Today we’ll look at what it takes to stage the Five Boro Bike Tour, scheduled for Sunday. We’ll also get details about an appellate decision in a case that could force changes in policies at public schools with selective admissions policies.

Hundreds of cyclists cross over a bridge with the Roosevelt Island tram overhead.

Kenneth Podziba began by saying that it was harder to stage the Five Boro Bike Tour than it was to stage the New York City Marathon.

He is the president and chief executive of Bike New York, a nonprofit group that promotes happenings like the bike tour, which is scheduled for Sunday.

Then he said that he did not want to sound as if he was “bashing or belittling the Road Runners” — the New York Road Runners, the organization that puts on the marathon, the largest of its kind in the world. But Podziba did not, um, backpedal. Mounting the bike tour, the largest of its kind, “is a lot harder,” he said.

How so? Both events cover much of the same ground, from the 2.6-mile-long Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to highways like the Franklin D. Roosevelt Drive and the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. But Podziba said that bicyclists were different from runners. They face hazards that marathoners do not have to worry about.

That is why the bike tour has blowtorches at the ready.

The volunteers carrying them look for expansion joints — narrow connectors between strips of pavement that give the concrete room to move. Only a little, to be sure. But there are two long expansion joints on the F.D.R. that go in the same direction as the traffic, creating a potential hazard for cyclists who do not see them in time to swerve away, Podziba said.

On the Third Avenue Bridge, where the expansion joints run across the road, “the gaps are large enough” to pose problems, he said. Runners would probably not notice the unevenness, but a bicycle rider could go over the handlebars if a tire hit at the wrong angle.

The solution? Put tape over the expansion joints.

The tape will not stick if the joints are wet, Podziba said, so on a damp day the bike tour volunteers go out with blowtorches to dry the joints — carefully, said Podziba, who was the city’s sports commissioner under two mayors, Rudolph Giuliani and Michael Bloomberg, and served as deputy commissioner of the Taxi and Limousine Commission.

After looking at the rainy forecast for Sunday, he said that “it looks like we will need to use the blowtorches.” (A spokeswoman for the New York Road Runners said that “we don’t employ this method” and noted that her group worked with the Department of Transportation “to ensure the marathon course is safe for all participants.” Bike New York does, too, Podziba said. The two groups also coordinate with other city agencies, like the Police Department. And Bike New York removes the tape from the expansion joints once the cyclists have ridden by.)

And then there are the potholes.

Before the marathon, the Road Runners can put a cone over a pothole, Podziba said, but, he added, “we can’t.” The bike tour has volunteers who wave riders around potholes. Volunteers also work to smooth out potential bottlenecks like one that Podziba was concerned about on Kent Avenue in Brooklyn, where he said a lane was partly closed for construction work. The bike tour will close that lane all the way so that riders do not have to snake in and out on Sunday.

Different starting points

The two events start in different places — the marathon on Staten Island, the bike tour in Manhattan, at Church Street and Franklin Street in TriBeCa. (The 32,000 riders have been divided into six groups, called waves, that will pedal off at different times on Sunday morning.)

They also end in different places — the marathon in Central Park, the bike tour at Fort Wadsworth, on Staten Island, where there is an after-party.

The bike tour now draws so many riders that Fort Wadsworth “isn’t big enough,” Podziba said, adding, “We need a natural flow of people leaving.”

There is another difference between the bike tour and the marathon. The bicyclists can get a blessing on Saturday at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine.

It is something the cathedral has offered cyclists, but not runners, for more than 20 years.

“But we could,” said the dean of the cathedral, the Very Rev. Patrick Malloy, who will officiate at the service.

He will sprinkle holy water on each bicycle before the cyclists take “a festive lap inside the cathedral,” walking the length of the nave while ringing the bells on their bikes. Officials from the Department of Transportation will also be at the cathedral for a helmet giveaway for cyclists who need one — and on Sunday, they will. Bike New York says that helmetless riders will be asked to leave.

It will be a partly sunny day in the mid-60s. The evening will be partly cloudy, with temperatures in the high 40s.

At least a few of those arrested after the university called the police to Hamilton Hall were outsiders, not students or others who appeared to be affiliated with Columbia .

What to know : Two weeks after the 12 jurors were impaneled, the case is clipping along, with a half-dozen witnesses heard from. Here are five takeaways from Thursday’s testimony .

Lawsuit challenging school admissions moves forward

A lawsuit that could force changes in policies at New York City public schools with selective admissions policies is moving forward .

A New York appellate court ruled that a lower court judge had erred in dismissing the case.

At issue is what the lawsuit calls “pernicious racial inequality” in city schools, where students are sorted into two different academic tracks starting as early as kindergarten. The lawsuit argues that the system makes racial inequality worse by assigning children to either general elementary school classes or to specialized gifted and talented classes. Children on the gifted-and-talented track are often channeled into selected middle and high schools.

The lawsuit says that many Black and Latino students face “systematic exclusion” from the gifted and selective pipelines and are denied a sound education, as promised by the New York State Constitution. In 2021, when the lawsuit was filed, gifted and talented classes for elementary school students were about 75 percent white and Asian American, and there were relatively few gifted programs in predominantly Black and Latino neighborhoods.

Mark Rosenbaum, one of the lawyers who filed the lawsuit, said the decision allowing the case to proceed was “the beginning of the end of the two-tiered education system in New York City.”

City education officials said on Thursday that they were reviewing the court’s decision. But Daniel Weisberg, the first deputy chancellor, pointed to plans to open nine new schools in the fall — including some in underserved areas — in an effort, he said, to give “everybody the best opportunity to get a great education.”

Off Broadway

Dear Diary:

My friend was acting in an Off Broadway play. My wife, two boys and I went to see it.

Unfortunately, we got lost on the way and were 45 minutes late in arriving.

As we approached the box office to get our tickets, the clerk asked if we were the Spanos.

Yes, we said.

Thank God, he replied. We were waiting for you to start.

Thousands of cyclists ride in 2024 TD Five Boro Bike Tour

Cyclists ruled the city streets this weekend.

More than 30,000 bike riders participated in the 2024 TD Five Boro Bike Tour on a soggy Sunday. The nonprofit organization that puts on the event, Bike New York, says it is the biggest charitable bike ride in the world.

“It’s just so enjoyable. It’s physical. It’s emotional. It’s mental. It’s spiritual,” said Ken Podziba, the president and CEO of Bike New York.

What You Need To Know

More than 30,000 bike riders participated in the 2024 td five boro bike tour on sunday the event was hosted by the nonprofit organization bike new york the 40-mile journey began in lower manhattan, went up to the bronx, came back down into queens and brooklyn before wrapping up on staten island ny1 producers nicholas loud and atlan hassard rode in the event and joined anchors rocco vertuccio and shannan ferry sunday morning on ny1 to talk about it.

The 40-mile journey began in lower Manhattan and continued through Central Park, before cyclists made their way uptown to the Bronx. They then went south and biked over the Queensboro Bridge into Long Island City.

Riders then traveled through Queens and along the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, before biking over the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to wrap up on Staten Island.

This event is not a race — it is a tour. Cyclists of all skill levels from around the world are invited to travel at their own pace and take in the spectacle.

"I think this is just a great opportunity to see the city. I mean, the streets are closed. This like never happens. We were just through Manhattan. It was amazing. It gives you a different view of the city,” said Diego Garcia, a participant in the Five Boro Bike Tour.

Garcia is new to the city after recently moving to the area from Mexico.

Ari Calem, who is originally from Maryland, has been living and working in the city for about three years. She too took part in the bike tour for the first time on Sunday.

"My bike is kind of a plain casual bike. So I'm just enjoying the city, getting some exercise, but not taking it too intensely,” Calem said.

Spectrum News NY1 spoke with two riders Sunday who are blind. They said they feel empowered when riding in the Five Boro Bike Tour.

"We just want to be part of this community, this high energy. We're athletes at the highest level. We both compete internationally,” said Kiana Glanton, who rode Sunday on a tandem bike.

Glanton said she wants people to know there are no limits to what somebody can do.

"I'm just excited to bring some more light and awareness and education to visual impairments and blindness and people — what they can do," said Griffin Pinkow.

The Five Boro Bike Tour raises money to fund free bike education programs throughout the city, including teaching young New Yorkers in all five boroughs how to ride on city streets.

"We teach formerly incarcerated New Yorkers to become bike mechanics, and they get jobs maintaining Citi Bikes, and their lives are turned around," Podziba said. "We also teach tens of thousands of New Yorkers how to ride — how to ride safely."

The event has around 70 different organizations that serve as charity partners, according to Podziba.

KERSHAW COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A crash took the life of a motorcyclist headed to the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally, according to the coroner.

The crash happened just around 7 a.m. Saturday along McBee Highway and Ellis Road.

LCpl. Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol said the motorcyclist went off the right side of the road and hit a culvert, which caused the crash.

West identified the victim as 37-year-old Tully Tillman from Indian Land in Lancaster County.

The coroner added that Tillman was wearing a helmet at the time.

Tillman was taken to the hospital where he later died.

West said it appeared that Tillman was heading to the Myrtle Beach Bike Rally, which started on Friday night and ends on Sunday, May 19.

Meghan Markle in Nigeria on May 12, 11 and 10.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle touched down in Nigeria on Friday to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games. The Duke of Sussex created the international multi-sport event for wounded servicemen and women after serving in Afghanistan.

As part of their multiyear deal with Netflix , the Duke and Duchess released a five-part docuseries about the games titled “Heart of Invictus,” in 2023. It follows a group of competitors from around the globe, all service members who have experienced life-changing injuries or illnesses, leading up to the 2020 Invictus Games in The Hague.

Below, see all of the details on Markle’s Nigeria tour looks.

On X, followers of the royals speculated that the name of Markle’s frock nodded to the royal family, whose surname is Windsor. “I’m convinced she is doing this on purpose at this point. Infamy is her goal – not approval. She is taking a page out of Wallis’ handbook,” one user wrote, referring to American socialite Wallis Simpson, whose husband, King Edward VIII, abdicated the throne to marry her in 1936.

Markle then suited up in an all-white ensemble by Altuzarra , which consisted of a plunging blazer and flared trousers. The Duchess added on suede Manolo Blahnik pumps, Ariel Gordon earrings and an Aurate necklace.

To spectate a match of sitting volleyball with the Invictus Games-partnered organization Nigeria Unconquered, Markle paired a leaf print Johanna Ortiz dress with Heidi Merrick sunglasses, Jennifer Meyer earrings and Emme Parsons sandals.

For her next event, the Duchess donned a strapless white maxidress by St. Agni, completing her look with vintage Dior earrings, nude Aquazzura heels and a cross pendant formerly owned by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Markle’s third outfit change of the day featured a red Orire dress with a ruffled hem, Aquazzura pumps and diamond-encrusted gold jewelry by Kimai, Ariel Gordon and Logan Hollowell.

Markle’s next look comprised a silk Carolina Herrera column gown, an Aurate gold collar necklace and Jennifer Meyer earrings.
