Brian Setzer announces Rockabilly Riot fall 2023 tour

New solo album due this fall

Brian Setzer has confirmed a 12-date fall tour coinciding with a new solo album due in the upcoming months via Surfdog Records. Marking his first live shows in over four years, Setzer will embark on the Rockabilly Riot Tour starting September 12th in Red Bank, NJ with stops in nashville, Chicago and others before wrapping in his adopted hometown of Minneapolis.

Presales start today (Wed, June 28th) at noon local time with the public on sale starting Friday, June 30th at 10 am local time.

For these dates, Setzer will be joined by, in his words, an “international rockabilly band, Chris D’Rozario from Melbourne, Australia and Juan Laurios from Mexico City.”

“I’ve had a pretty long break, and I needed it. I’m renewed and really want to play live again. I want to just get out on the road with this kick-ass little three-piece band and start playing.”

The shows will be highlighted by Setzer’s guitar assault and rockin’ style on the most electrifying songs from his 40-year career as a solo artist, leader of The Brian Setzer Orchestra and as a Stray Cat. He adds, “I think fans can always expect that I’m going to play the hits. I also want to play some solo guitar and little things I’ve worked out by myself. I’ve never really gotten to do that, so it’s going to be something new.”

His set lists will include “some of the favorite covers I’m doing now. I haven’t recorded it, but I really like playing my version of ‘Georgia On My Mind.’ And then with the band, I want to play a new song ‘Girl On The Billboard’ because it tells a fun story.”

These shows come as Setzer is preparing to release a new solo album due in the fall, his first since 2021’s Gotta Have the Rumble . Additional details about the forthcoming album will be announced in the coming weeks.

Brian Setzer has announced dates for his 2024 “Rockabilly Riot” tour to support his recently released a new solo album. The Devil Always Collects arrived on September 15, 2023, via Surfdog Records. Listen to many of the songs below including the rollicking “Rock Boys Rock.” The concerts follow his recent shows which marked his first tour in over four years. Setzer had cancelled a 2019 Christmas tour just days before it was scheduled to begin, due to what was described at the time as a “severe case of tinnitus.” In the earlier 2023 tour announcement, Setzer said, “I’ve had a pretty long break, and I needed it. I’m renewed and really want to play live again. I want to just get out on the road with this kick-ass little 3-piece band and start playing.” Setzer turned 64 on April 10. An artist pre-sale is underway; tickets to the general public will be available on Nov. 17 at 10 a.m. local time here  and here .

The Setzer shows are highlighted by songs from the iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner’s 40-year career as a solo artist, leader of the Brian Setzer Orchestra and as a Stray Cat. He adds, “I think fans can always expect that I’m going to play the hits. I also want to play some solo guitar and little things I’ve worked out by myself. I’ve never really gotten to do that, so it’s going to be something new.”

His setlists will include “some of the favorite covers I’m doing now. I haven’t recorded it, but I really like playing my version of ‘Georgia On My Mind’.”

Watch the official video for “Rock Boys Rock”

“It’s an old truckers song,” says Setzer about “Girl On the Billboard,” popularized in 1965 by country music singer Del Reeves. “At first I wasn’t getting the sound I wanted until I picked up my Gretsch 1957 Duo Jet 6131 Firebird. I mean, the sound is monstrous, dirty and twangy.”

The new solo album is his first since 2021’s Gotta Have the Rumble .

One of my favorite ’80s artist. I’ve seen the Stray Cats and they are a blast from the past. I’m glad Brian is still singing and performing. Hopefully he’ll do a 45th Anniversary Tour with the original Stray Cats in 2024. They were fabulous on their 40th Anniversary in 2019. Come to the West Coast on your Fall tour, Brian

Brian Setzer Ochestra is a swing and jump blues band formed in 1990 by Stray Cats frontman Brian Setzer, hailing from the Los Angeles, U.S.

Prior to forming the Brian Setzer Orchestra, Setzer developed a wealth of experience that grew out of his love for Cochran, Vincent, Elvis and Carl Perkins, not to mention big-band jazz. In 1979 he created the band the Tomcats, which later evolved into the Stray Cats, with bassist Lee Rocker and drummer Slim Jim Phantom. Sensing a more open-minded ear in the UK, the band moved and released their eponymously title debut followed by “Gonna Ball” in 1982. “Built for Speed” was then released in the U.S. also in 1982 catapulting the band to popularity, followed with 1983’s “Rant n Rave with the Stray Cats” featuring the hit single “(She’s) Sexy + 17”.

The band failed to live-up to past successes and Setzer founded the Brian Setzer Orchestra in 1990. Released in 1994 on Hollywood Records, the band’s eponymously-titled debut album reached No. 158 on the Billboard 200. With a move to Interscope following a corporate restructuring, the Brian Setzer Orchestra released the album “Guitar Slinger" in 1996, which failed to chart, followed by “The Dirty Boogie” in 1998. The album became a smash hit, reaching No. 9 on the Billboard 200, aided by the hit cover of “Jump Jive & Wail” originally by Louis Prima, which peaked at No. 23 in the singles chart.

Having found his swinging big-band feet, Setzer continued to released albums in much the same musical vein including 2000’s follow-up “Vavoom!”, which reached No. 62 in the chart. The Brian Setzer Orchestra went on to release six lively Christmas albums including “Dig That Crazy Christmas” in 2005 and “Christmas Comes Alive!” in 2010, and number of swinging covers of classical compositions largely released on SurfDog Records.

Live reviews

Brian Setzer is really the person that but modern rockabilly on the map and actually made it somewhat mainstream for a while. He is essentially the face of that scene and produced the only really hit songs from that general.

His band the Stray Cats were on MTV and gained pop success for a while. But he really has redefined himself as a musician and big band conductor through his post stray cat projects including the Brian Setzer Orchestra.

The band has at least 15 members and probably more (could not count them all). He did all of his Stray Cat hits and did not “Stray” away from those older popular songs. He still had a bunch of fans and they were thrilled at the 90 minute tour de force of loud upbeat American music. The show was near to Christmas so he did several Christmas classic and they were really good. He still had the showy outfits and blonde haircut. He also still had the energy that makes him still be able to pack the house.

There were a few young kids at the show and it was good to see them exposed to any actual musical band that had more than 3 people in it or wasn't produced by a computer.

I can't tell you how many times I've checked into a show with these wild cats. Whether it's the Christmas Concerts or the summer outdoor venues they've always put out the best. When he and the Orchestra were at the Fox in downtown Detroit for the Christmas show, he did 49 Mercury Blues. He also did it at Pine Knob, formally known as DTE Theater. Yes it's me, that guy that was yelling at the top of my lungs to do 49 merc. Funny, next day while walking through a market parking lot, a guy walked up and asked if I owned a 49 Merc. Evidently I was on the Jumbo Screen quite a bit during that show.

Well hope that hearing issue clears up and you can get back on tour. We all miss you.

Nothing gets you in the Christmas mood better than a Brian Setzer Orchestra Christmas show.

The band's talent is definitely apparent and Brian likes to make sure that they get to show off their talents with a lot of solos.

As we all know Setzer is a celebrated guitar slinger himself.

With all this talent on stage it brings such a powerful tight sound that all should experience at least once and I promise that if you experience the show once you will be hooked and want to see it every year.

I've been wanting to see this show for several years, but was always traveling at Christmas. I can happily say that despite my high expectations, the concert met and exceeded them!

The band played a great mix of originals and traditional Christmas carols done in a swingin' big band style. They even threw in a couple of covers for good measure. Brian is the consummate showman, so there was never a dull moment.

I plan on attending this show every year I can.

This guy is the bomb! Definitely thick. Rated as one of the world's greatest guitarists is evident once you see him. AND, his band mates are about as equally gifted. Beautiful music. He also through in a tribute song to Tom Petty (who recently passed away). I'd see this show over and over again. If you like rock and brass just go!

Great show! Excellent music in an excellent venue (Ryman Auditorium). As long as he keeps bringing his Christmas show to Nashville, I'll keep going. Good mix of Christmas classics and Brian Setzer Orchestra hits. He had the crowd rocking from the time he stepped on stage until the time the show ended.

See this show!!! Lots of Christmas music, some covers, and Stray Cats music. He is such a phoenominal guitarist and so talented. The horns were amazing. Was an excellent way to start off the holiday season. You will not be disappointed if you are a Brian Setzer fan. Go see this show!!!

Great show! A good mix of christmas songs, stray cats songs, and a bit of rockabilly for good measure. The orchestra was wonderful. The two singers also had an excellent performance. Solid hour and a half of Brian Setzer goodness.

DonnaM+28’s profile image

This was the most awesome show ever . I have been to others at the Ryman in Nashville but the one in Louisville ky was by far the best ever. Brian and his orchestra make the holiday season a lot more bearable.

7th year in a row attending this Christmas extravaganza! Another amazing show last night! Set list was perfect, he even threw a Glen Campbell and Tom Petty song into the mix. Can't wait until next year!

Article contributed by sro | published on monday, july 22, 2019.

the brian setzer orchestra tour

Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and three-time Grammy-Award winner BRIAN SETZER and his 19-piece ORCHESTRA will tour the country on their 16th annual "Christmas Rocks! Tour," presented for the fifth consecutive year by SiriusXM. The over 20-city annual and critically acclaimed holiday extravaganza will launch November 15 at the State Thea Block layout tre in Minneapolis, MN (full itinerary below). Tickets in participating markets will go sale Friday, July 26 at 10:00 AM(local time), pre-sales are as follows:

Fan club Presale: Tuesday, July 23 at 10:00 AM (local time)-Thursday, July 25 at 10:00 PM (local). Be the first to get tickets by signing up for Brian's fan club  here .

SiriusXM Presale: Tuesday, July 23 at 10:00 AM (local time)-Thursday, July 25 at 10:00 PM (local).

Local Presale: Wednesday, July 24 at 10:00 AM (local time)-Thursday, July 25 at 10:00 PM (local).

"People tell me all the time what joy I bring them over the holidays," says BRIAN SETZER. "I don't take this for granted. People don't say something like that unless they mean it. When we get a standing ovation at the end of the Christmas show, it means something just a little extra."

THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA's set list will feature music from the group's three Christmas albums, BOOGIE WOOGIE CHRISTMAS, DIG THAT CRAZY CHRISTMAS and ROCKIN' RUDOLPH, as well as original material that spans his 40-year career. SETZER's trademark guitar work and vocal stylings will be matched with his 19-piece orchestra's rockin' big-band horn arrangements, making for a reliably unbeatable combination. View the Christmas sizzle reel  here .

BRIAN SETZER's legendary career has led him through four critically acclaimed and successful phases from the Stray Cats, to solo albums, the Rockabilly Riot and The Brian Setzer Orchestra. The Brian Setzer Orchestra show seamlessly encompasses music from all these phases. He is a 3-time Grammy Award-winner, and in 2014, SETZER received the distinct honor of being asked by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 "Stray Cat" guitar, joining an elite collection of iconic treasures at the museum.

"The music I play in the big band is rock n' roll with a jazz influence," says SETZER. "What keeps it fresh is the quality of the players in the band. Also, a big part of keeping the big band fresh is the arrangements; writing the arrangement for 19 people is like writing a song within a song. It makes the song you might have heard many times sound new again."

For the past four years (2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018), THE BRIAN SETZER ORCHESTRA has had a strong presence across SiriusXM channels during the holidays and has partnered with the audio entertainment company for subscriber-only concerts in New York City and Los Angeles, which have aired on SiriusXM's Outlaw Country and Holly channels. This tradition will continue this year.

ABOUT BRIAN SETZER:

Iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and 3-time Grammy award-winner BRIAN SETZER has achieved one career milestone after another. He’s sold millions of albums and is a “Musician’s Musician” credited with continually taking chances with innovative and daring musical styles. Setzer is widely credited for taking two forgotten genres, rockabilly and swing, adding his own blend of gunpowder and rockin’ style, and completely reinventing and single-handedly resurrecting them in the process. Along the way, he has scored chart-topping hits, sold 13 million records and received the Orville H. Gibson Lifetime Achievement Awardthroughout his decorated career as founder/leader of the Stray Cats, his 19-piece Brian Setzer Orchestra, and as a solo artist. He is consistently cited as one of the world’s greatest living guitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive line of elite Gretsch signature model guitars bearing his name. SETZER is also, fittingly, in the Rockabilly Hall of Fame. On the live front, Setzer has headlined venues and festivals worldwide, including a 1983 headlining slot on the iconic US Festival in California, The Playboy Jazz Festival, a three-night, sold-out headlining run at the Hollywood Bowl with the 98-piece Philharmonic Orchestra, Woodstock ’99, and performing in front of more than 150,000 people as headliner of the Montreal Jazz Festival.  His reach also includes films and TV, where his roles include portraying rockabilly pioneer Eddie Cochran in the 1987 film, La Bamba,  Fox’s “Beverly Hills 90210,” among many others, and he is one of the few musicians to be animated in an episode of “The Simpsons” in 2002. The iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist and three-time Grammy-Award winner Brian Setzer and his 19-piece The Brian Setzer Orchestra have announced their 14th annual “Christmas Rocks! Tour,” presented for the second consecutive year by SiriusXM. The holiday extravaganza will hit the Fox Theatre stage on Wednesday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. with special guest The Texas Gentlemen.

The group’s set list will feature music off their latest Christmas album Rockin' Rudolph (available now as a limited edition box set, CD, vinyl or download) plus music off their three previous best-selling holiday albums; and original material from Brian Setzer.  View the Christmas sizzle reel here: https://vimeo.com/185244567

2017 is a big year for The Brian Setzer Orchestra who will celebrate their 25th anniversary in style with an exclusive landmark show at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on August 2. Under the stars at the legendary venue where they’ve performed on four previous occasions, Setzer’s trademark guitar work and vocal stylings will be matched with his 19-piece orchestra’s rockin’ big-band horn arrangements, making for a reliably unbeatable combination. View the anniversary sizzle reel here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwOo9mU2dqE

Brian Setzer belongs to an elite group of artists who’ve had four super successful phases of his career, from the Stray Cats, to solo albums, The Rockabilly Riot to BSO. The BSO show seamlessly encompasses music from all these phases. “The music I play in the big band is rock n’ roll with a jazz influence,” says Setzer. “What keeps it fresh is the quality of the players in the band. Also a big part of keeping the big band fresh is the arrangements; writing the arrangement for 18-19 people is like writing a song within a song.  It makes the song you might have heard many times sound new again.”

For the past two years, The Brian Setzer Orchestra has had a strong presence on SiriusXM during the holidays. The band performed exclusive invitation-only concerts for SiriusXM listeners in New York City in 2015 and 2016, which aired on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country and Holly channels. Details of this year’s special SiriusXM concert will be announced this fall.

Moscow Tour Report- Part 2: The Untold Story of the Cargo’s Journey

the brian setzer orchestra tour

Often, when we see a performance by an ensemble from abroad, we think of how far the musicians have traveled to be there, and what that must be like. But sometimes we don’t realize just how big of an undertaking it is to transport an entire orchestra -and their instruments- to another continent. Below, Violinist Alexandra Adkins describes the untold story of the cargo’s journey.

CLICK HERE to stream the concert LIVE from Moscow at 10:00 AM Friday and Saturday mornings!

Musicians in Moscow

Our orchestra on tour is accompanied by lots of cargo; instrument shipping trunks, wardrobe trunks, special chairs and so on. The musicians were fortunate to head to Moscow Tuesday on a 12 hour nonstop flight, but our cargo had a more extensive journey. According to stage manager Donald Ray Jackson, it is a four day process that began immediately following the Ima Hogg performance on June 2nd. The symphony truck was loaded up that night and headed for IAH, where Sunday morning he and assistant stage manager Kelly Morgan began building seven container pallets from the various instrument and wardrobe trunks. It is a complicated puzzle to make the pallets the size that will fit in the cargo hold of a passenger plane. Every piece is X- rayed before loading. Donald Ray and Kelly travel with our shipment every step of the way. Our cargo arrived Monday afternoon in London, where it was offloaded and transferred to a climate controlled warehouse until the Moscow flight Tuesday morning. Due to a size issue with one of our containers, some of our cargo was delayed, thus everything did not arrive in Moscow until 3:00 AM Wednesday morning. Clearing Russian customs, disassembling the pallets and loading up trucks for transport to Moscow’s Hall of Columns took the next 18 hours, and finally at 11:30 PM Wednesday night our four very sleep deprived Houston stage crew members began the two hour load in to the hall– assisted by Russian crew– so that our instruments would be available for individual practice on Thursday morning. Donald Ray and Kelly are now catching up on their ZZZ’s in the subway, on the bus, and anywhere else they can find a quiet corner!

Moscow Symphony Orchestra

  • DETAILS DETAILS

The establishment of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra coincided with the crumbling of the former Soviet Union. The orchestra was founded in 1989 by Ellen and Marina Levine, who had both spent a number of years in the United States working in the fields of advertising and marketing. When political changes occurred, the two felt positive about a return to Russia and made moved back to their native country. The orchestra's director was the French conductor Antonio de Almeida (1928 - 1997), who initiated a subscription series in Moscow's Great Hall and presided over the recording of more than 20 CDs with the orchestra. Almeida's training (he studied with Ginastera, Hindemith, Koussevitzky, and Szell) and international experience (France, Portugal, and the United States) tended to assure that the orchestra would be exposed to music coming from sources beyond Russian borders.

In assembling the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Levines pulled together players who were graduates of Russia's most distinguished conservatories (Leningrad, Moscow, and Kiev), many of them prize winners in Russian and international music competitions. These orchestra members had performed under many of the Soviet Union's best-known conductors, including Mravinsky, Rozhdestvensky, and Svetlanov. A tour to Finland and England in 1991 found the orchestra performing together with a famous rock band, evidence of the flexibility and willingness to work in a variety of genres that would subsequently result in the recording of a broad spectrum of musical styles and nationalities. In 1993, the orchestra made a tour of Spain that resulted in acclaim and positive reviews. With a joint British and Japanese commission, the ensemble was able to produce a 12-program television series intended for international distribution.

By 2001, the orchestra's recordings numbered well over 100, three-quarters of those for Naxos and its sister label Marco Polo. By then under the leadership of Vladimir Ziva (1961 - ), the Moscow Symphony Orchestra had amassed a remarkable range of music, from a Glazunov series to collections devoted to American film classics. Most of the latter have been conducted by William T. Stromberg. Other conductors who have led the orchestra on multiple occasions include Alexander Anissimov, Igor Golovschin, Frederic Devreese (in music by twentieth-century Flemish composer Marcel Poot), and Kerry Stratton. Also represented on disc with this orchestra are works by the Belgian violinist and composer Gottfried Devreese, father of Frederic. The orchestra's training in performing multiple styles has been especially important in the recording of American film scores. Several important movie composers are represented in the orchestra's recording catalogue, among them Bernard Hermann, Max Steiner, Franz Waxman, and Erich Korngold, and mastery of the idiom is much in evidence throughout these performances.

Several other rather obscure composers are represented in the Moscow Symphony Orchestra discography. Almeida recorded the symphonies of French composer Henri Sauguet (1901 - 1989) while Guatemalan composer Ricardo Castillo (1891 - 1966) is represented by a disc containing his ballet, Paal Kaba. Still other composers previously underrepresented include the Italian Gian Francesco Malipiero (1882 - 1973) whose symphonies were recorded under Almeida's direction, and the Frenchman Charles Tournemire (1870 - 1939).

Among other distinctions for the Moscow Symphony Orchestra has been the presence as an ensemble member of cellist Scott Brady, the first American to have played in a professional Russian orchestra.
