DID YOU KNOW?

Lake Country is the most northern wine region in the Okanagan and not surprisingly it also has the coolest climate. It gets 4” more rain on average when compared to Osoyoos, the most southern Okanagan region. Steep slopes hugging the Okanagan Lake and modern advances in viticulture such as wind machines prevent frost damaging the vines and buds in autumn, winter and spring.

Lake Country is an unofficial sub-appellation, as BC remains prudent when implementing new regulations to make it official. However, there is no doubt this remains a unique terrior to any other part of the Okanagan wine region. The area has a good variety of soils with clay, gravel and limestone all providing essential minerals and the right balance of water retention.

George and Trudy Heiss pioneered this wine region back in 1976 when they started Gray Monk winery. Now known for their Sparkling Odyssey white Brut, and unique riesling hybrids. The Rotberger rose stood out to us in 2018. Gray Monk was the only winery in the region for 27 years, until Arrowleaf Cellars also saw the potential of this cool climate region. Several others now like ExNihlo and O'Rourke Peak Cellars have converted the cherry and apple orchards of the area into exceptional vineyards.

The Best Things to Do in Canada

Things to Do in Invermere and the Columbia Valley

July 5, 2022 By Matthew G. Bailey Leave a Comment

Sharing is caring!

Kayaking from Invermere to Radium Hot Springs.

Looking for things to do in Invermere? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Located just three hours west of Calgary , Invermere and the entire Columbia Valley is one of our favourite British Columbia destinations .

Sandwiched between the Purcell Mountains and the Rocky Mountains in a stunning valley fringed by some of the largest wetlands in North America, the Columbia Valley is truly a paradise for those into outdoor adventure. It includes popular destinations like Invermere, Radium Hot Springs, and Fairmont Hot Springs.

There are also lots of things to do in the Columbia Valley during all seasons, with world-class skiing and snowmobiling in the colder months and everything from hiking and biking to paddling and ATV’ing during the warmer months.

In this travel guide, we’re going to fill you in on the top things to do in Invermere and the Columbia Valley.

Table of Contents

Enjoy Windermere Lake

Besides the two mountain ranges, the many hot springs, the wetlands, and the valley itself, one of the main things that make Invermere a popular destination is Windermere Lake. While it’s popular year-round for different activities, the summer is when it truly shines, both figuratively and literally. This is when people get out on boats, go fishing, go swimming in the blue waters, or just enjoy the water in a variety of ways. If you don’t have a boat, you can rent one from Pete’s Marina.

Visiting James Chabot Provincial Park is one of the top Things to Do in Invermere.

Chill Out at James Chabot Provincial Park

Located on the northern edge of Windermere Lake, right in the town of Invermere, is the small but beautiful James Chabot Provincial Park. Here you’ll find a nice sandy beach, a playground, a variety of picnic tables, and even a wooden walkway to explore part of the neighbouring wetlands. People tend to come here and enjoy things like kayaking, canoeing, paddleboarding, and even windsurfing. We walked here one night for sunset and captured such a beautiful video of the lake and the mountains with many loons singing out in the distance.

Kayaking is one of the best things to do in Invermere for those wanting to explore the rivers.

Go Kayaking or Canoeing in the Wetlands

With Windermere Lake, the Columbia Wetlands, and the Columbia River, there are loads of paddling opportunities for those wanting to get out on the water. During our visit, we joined a guided kayaking tour with Columbia River Paddle and went through the wetlands and into the Columbia River, terminating in the town of Radium Hot Springs four hours later. This is such a beautiful tour as it’s a great chance to spot many birds (we saw loads of bald eagles), admire the two mountain ranges, enjoy one of the largest wetlands in North America, and so much more.

Whether you’re looking for a simple trail to go biking or some more serious downhill mountain biking, Invermere and the Columbia Valley are a great place to be. There are many trails around town to enjoy. One of our favourites is the Old Coach Road, which is fairly wide and goes along the cliffs of the Columbia Valley, giving you the chance to get lovely views over the wetlands and valley.

For those looking to get some adrenaline pumping, you can head to Panorama Mountain Resort, a ski resort that becomes a mountain biking haven during the summer months. The bike park has flow tracks, green trails for beginners, and plenty of intermediate trails for expert bikers. Just make sure you’re ready because mountain biking is not for the faint-hearted. When you’re done, Panorama also offers Eurobungy, tennis, a pool, a climbing wall, and mountain yoga.

Golfing is a popular activity in Fairmont Hot Springs.

For those who love to drive the ball, Invermere is paradise. With more than 13 golf courses situated in or within 60 minutes of the town, golf has become one of the top things to do in Invermere.

Some options include the 18-hole course at Eagle Ranch Resort, which offers a 72-par course with stunning fairways and small canyons. There’s also the family-owned nine-hole Setetkwa Golf Course, which doubles as an RV park or the Ridge at Copper Point, which offers an 18-hole course with par 62, making it a great option for a quicker game. For those looking for something even more serious, you might want to consider the Greywolf Golf Course, which was voted one of the top five courses in Canada.

If that’s still not enough, there’s also the very popular Springs Golf Course in Radium Hot Springs, which also offers incredible views. You could even stay there at the Bighorn Meadows Resort , which is located on the ninth fairway of the golf course.

Other options include Mountainside in Fairmont Hot Springs, Edgewater Hill, and Creekside.

ziplining is one of the many things to do in Radium Hot Springs

Go Ziplining

Located nearby and just off the highway leading to Radium Hot Springs, Valley Zipline Adventures offers a thrilling and fun adventure for the whole family. Get strapped into your harness, throw on a helmet, and enjoy whizzing around through the forest on 7 ziplines, some of which are 300 feet long!

This was a fun zipline as you get a hands-on experience, taking charge of your own gear. Before embarking on the full course, you’ll actually get a training session on some very short ziplines near the main building. Once you’re confident, you’ll have loads of fun flying through the Dry Gulch Valley, including a double zip that allows you to race your friend or family member. All in all, this experience takes approximately 1.5 hours.

Take a Chairlift up the Mountain

There are many benefits to having a ski resort nearby and one of them is being able to ride a chairlift up the mountain for stunning views or alpine hikes. The chairlift takes you up to a whopping 5,300 feet for a truly breathtaking experience.

Toby Creek ATV Adventures offers thrilling ATV and snowmobile adventures near Panorama Mountain Resort.

Go ATV’ing

Another great thing to do near Panorama Mountain Resort is ATV’ing. Offered by Toby Creek Adventures , you can join them on a guided tour to go all the way up the mountain to see stunning waterfalls and a private alpine cabin overlooking some of the most incredible scenery in the area. Even if you’re a beginner, this is a great way to try out an ATV while getting truly unforgettable views.

Go Soaring through the Skies

Ever dream of soaring around the Canadian Rockies? For those who don’t know what “soaring” is, it is the sport of flying unpowered aircraft called gliders or sailplanes. Launched into the air by powered aircraft and using natural sources of lift, such as thermals, the two objectives of the sport are to stay airborne as long as possible and fly the longest distances.

Invermere is known as being one of the best-soaring sites in the world thanks to a wonderful mix of thermals, dynamic soaring, and wave. If this sounds thrilling to you, the best season is from May to September with June to August being the prime time. Learn more at the Invermere Soaring Centre .

With so much nature, it’s no surprise that Invermere and the Columbia Valley are home to some great hiking. Whether you’re looking for light hiking or alpine trekking, there’s something for everyone. One of the most popular trails is Lillian Lake, but there’s also Toby Creek Canyon if you want to see some hoodoos, Old Coach Road for views over the valley, and Juniper Trail to see Sinclair Falls. There’s also Kootenay National Park and Panorama Mountain Resort for more mountainous options.

Take a Dip in the Hot Springs

With so much adventure in the area, you’ll be pleased to know that this region is also home to quite a few hot springs for you to rest your tired muscles in. The closest hot spring is Radium Hot Springs, a popular one managed by Parks Canada. These are one of the most popular hot springs in BC with odour-free water boasting a temperature between 37 and 40 degrees. We love these hot springs because they back onto a cliff, making it a great place to be in nature while having man-made amenities, lockers, and more. We’ve even watched mountain goats climbing around from the pools.

Another option is Fairmont Hot Springs, which is just 20-minutes south and is home to the largest hot springs in Canada. There’s also a popular resort, golf course, spa, and more.

If you want a more wilderness feel, Lussier Hot Springs is a popular option. Located in Whiteswan Provincial Park, which is an hour’s drive from Invermere, this is a natural hot spring right next to a river. There’s no man-made pool for the water. You just sit on the rocks and enjoy. However, it is certainly not a secret and you can expect heavy crowds at times.

One of our favourite hot springs in BC is Radium Hot Springs.

Drink Some Craft Vodka at Taynton Bay Spirits

Everyone loves a good craft drink from time to time, and in Invermere, you can taste some delicious spirits at Taynton Bay Spirits, the only distillery in town.

Made with wheat grown just miles away, these spirits are as locally-made as it gets. Not only will you get to try flavoured vodkas like orange turmeric and ginger matcha tea, but you can also do a tour to learn about the distilling process.

Drink Craft Beer at Arrowhead Brewing Company

If spirits aren’t your thing, or maybe you like both, head on over to Arrowhead Brewing Company for some tasty craft beer. Opened in 2012, this brewery creates a wide variety of beers, including permanent brews and some rotating seasonal taps as well. The taproom is a nice place to indulge in a pint or two, or you can do what we always do and order a flight, allowing you to taste a variety. Some popular options include the Blonde Bombshell and the Black Jack Irish Stout.

Visit the Windermere Valley Museum and Archives

If you’d like to learn about the history of this beautiful place, you don’t want to miss a visit to the Windermere Valley Museum and Archives . Home to a number of historic buildings, you’ll feel like you’ve been transported back in time while enjoying stunning views of the lake and valley.

Some of the buildings include an old railway station, the original Brisco schoolhouse, a 1942 pioneer cabin from the Crook homestead, a Miner Cabin, and the Notary Building, which was originally constructed as a WW1 veterans’ memorial. Each building features a variety of interesting exhibits and artifacts relating to mining, farming, transportation, daily life, and much more.

Views of Windermere Lake in Invermere BC.

Visit Pynelogs Cultural Centre and Art Gallery

Now that you’ve learned some history at the Windermere Valley Museum, learn about the culture and art scene at the Pynelogs Cultural Centre and Art Gallery .

Located in a historic log building that was constructed in 1914, you’ll find a great selection of art depicting various subjects and themes, ranging from painting and prints to sculptures and ceramics. This is also a great place to check out some events, such as comedy shows, music concerts, plays, and dramas.

An added bonus of visiting the cultural centre is the vibrant heritage garden that features flowers and vegetables that were common back in the day as well as a stunning landscape and a fountain within Dorothy Lake.

Attend the Annual MusicFest

Who doesn’t love music?

If you’re looking to enjoy this beautiful neck of the woods while also enjoying some incredible music, time your visit with the annual MusicFest, which takes part in August. The festival lasts for an entire weekend and showcases both Canadian and international talent, all next to the stunning Windermere Lake.

Soak Up Some Sun at Kinsmen Park

One of the popular lakeside beaches lies within Kinsmen Park, which is super close to downtown Invermere. The park is home to an old CPR Lodge as well as the stunning Columbia Valley Botanical Gardens. Visitors can enjoy views of the two mountain ranges, the garden, the beach, and food and drinks at the concession stand during the busy summer months. There are also washrooms, picnic tables, beach volleyball, and a children’s play area.

Enjoy the Invermere Rotary Splash and Spray Park

Another popular park, especially for kids, is the Invermere Rotary Splash And Spray Park, which is located on the Northern shore of Windermere Lake. During the hot summer months, kids can have a blast in the many water features.

Buy Some Art at the Artym Gallery

If you’re looking to admire some art or purchase some for your home, the award-winning Artym Gallery is a great place to visit. Featuring art from more than 60 Canadian artists, you can find a wide variety of stunning paintings, sculptures, and jewellery.

One of the best things to do in Invermere is to explore Kootenay National Park.

Explore Kootenay National Park

Located just north of Invermere and Radium Hot Springs is the absolutely incredible Kootenay National Park . Despite being just as beautiful as the world-famous Banff National Park , Kootenay National Park sees much fewer visitors, allowing you a more peaceful experience.

You can enjoy the scenic drive while stopping off at the various viewpoints, visit waterfalls and canyons that are located close to the road, or go on a variety of hikes, including multi-day hikes and backcountry camping adventures.

Another unique and wonderful experience is to join a guided hike to marvel at the UNESCO-listed Burgess Shale fossils, which are more than 500 million years old!

Spend a Weekend at Nipika Mountain Resort

Nipika Mountain Resort is a beautiful resort not far from Invermere. It’s ideal for spending a winter holiday as they have some attractive log cabin accommodation options.

Nipika Mountain Resort is surrounded by an amazing trail network set along the Kootenay and Cross River valleys. The trails make for a great place for cross country skiing, fat biking, and snowshoeing in the winter. In the summer you can enjoy endless hiking and mountain biking opportunities.

Ice Skate Along Lake Windermere Whiteway

If you happen to be in Invermere during the winter months and know how to skate, you should definitely check out the Lake Windermere Whiteway, which is claimed to be the world’s longest naturally frozen skating trail at a whopping 32 km (21 miles) in length.

Surrounded by stunning views of two mountain ranges, it’s truly one of the most breathtaking skating experiences you’ll ever have. If that sounds too long for you, don’t worry, there are shorter loops as well. Plus, in addition to the skating pathway, there are also opportunities for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and ice hockey.

Lake Lillian Whiteway

Another great thing to do in Invermere in the winter is go nordic skiing on the Lake Lillian Waterway just 10 minutes outside of Invermere. This 3km long trail is perfect for those that have already been out on the Windermere Whiteway.

Panorama Mountain Resort is one of the best things to do in Invermere for those who love skiing and snowboarding.

Skiing and Snowboarding

Although there are many world-class ski resorts within an hour of Invermere, the closest one is Panorama Mountain Resort , which is just 20-minutes away. Located in the Purcell Mountains, Panorama is one of our favourite ski resorts thanks to its incredible runs, beautiful landscapes, hot pools, and ski-in-ski-out accommodation. Panorama Mountain Resort also has one of the biggest verticals in all of North America while retaining many runs for beginners and experts alike.

Plus, they also have a variety of trails for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and fat-tire biking.

Go Snowmobiling in the Mountains

Another really fun winter adventure in Invermere is to go snowmobiling with Toby Creek Adventures near Panorama Mountain Ski Resort. This guided tour takes you up a mountain, offering a variety of jaw-dropping views and a frozen waterfall, before making your way to a private alpine cabin where you get a BBQ meal next to the remnants of an early 1900s silver mine. Then, you’ll get free time to ride into a powder bowl where you can really rip around and have a blast in one of the most beautiful areas in BC.

Things to Do in Kimberley include walking in the downtown Platzl.

Want More Things to Do in the Kootenays and Beyond?

31 Things to Do in Invermere/East Kootenays in the Summer (free + low cost)!

Share with your friends!

One of my favorite road trips is cruising along Highway 93 in the Kootenays on the eastern side of British Columbia.

Invermere is a hidden gem community that boasts all the beauty of the Canadian Rockies without the crowds, so it’s definitely worth visiting.

Of all the things to do in and around Invermere (the hub of the region), taking a few days to explore the area is the perfect getaway whether you’re looking for family fun, outdoor adventure or to relax.

It’s less than 1.5 hours of driving time to get from Radium Hot Springs to Kimberley, but there are tons of fun adventures to be had along the way.

The east Kootenays is home to stunning mountain top vistas, vast valleys, epic mountain biking trails, warm lakes and sandy beaches, some of the best hot springs in BC, adorable Austrian-themed alpine towns and all the outdoor adventures you can handle.

Here are some ideas and the best things to do in and around Invermere to help you build an itinerary for visiting the east Kootenays.

This post contains affiliate links, meaning if you click through and make a purchase I may make a small commission. I only share information about things I know, love and trust!

Stroll Through Downtown Invermere

Invermere has a great downtown core. There’s great boutique shopping, art galleries and cafes, bistros and restaurants.

Kootenay Coffee Works is a little out of downtown, but they’ve always got the most unique soup specials on daily.

Stop in to see what’s on the menu, sometimes its soups like: potato curry, spinach wasabi and coconut chicken soup.

Kinsmen Beach and James Chabot Provincial Park

Wander down to Kinsmen Beach on Lake Windermere, which is what Invermere is most known for. There’s tons of space for everyone, lots of parking and nice water to swim in.

The beach is large and has sandy sections for the kids, and there’s even a waterslide and docks to jump off of.

The beach at James Chabot Provincial Park is also another nice spot with a large beach and plenty of shade, and you can also rent paddle boats here.

Craft Breweries and Distilleries

Stop for a pint of local craft beer at Arrowhead Brewing Company and enjoy the vintage taproom vibes or the dog-friendly all season patio.

Overlooking Kinsmen Beach is Taynton Bay Spirits, a relatively new distillery in town. But this is no ordinary distillery.

They make tea infused with vodka to produce ready to pour cocktails. Stop in for a tasting and try the ginger matcha or orange turmeric cocktails.

Visit Quirky Small Towns

Radium hot springs.

wine tours in invermere bc

If you’re making your way along Highway 93, the village of Radium Hot Spring will be your first stop. The Radium Hot Springs pools are a must visit (they’re so much better than the Banff Upper Hot Springs in my opinion).

The water is hot, extra soft and soothing from all the minerals, and the pool is huge so there’s lots of room to spread out. In the summer there’s also a cooler swimming pool for the kids and lap swimming.

But there’s also great hiking in the area, like Sinclair Canyon where the highway is blasted through the massive rockwall.

For a leisurely, yet scenic walk, go for a drive to visit Olive Lake, perfectly clear and still emerald green water. On the way you’ll pass by stunning red rock cliffs.

And above all, enjoy walking around this quiet little town in the mountains and admire all the adorable Austrian-themed hotels.

Chances are you’ll also bump into the bighorn sheep that roam freely around town, too! (just don’t approach them as they’re wild animals).

Finish off your visit in town with dinner at the Salzburg – the best German/Austrian food in the west!

>> Read More About Exploring the Best of Radium Hot Springs

Kimberley was voted best small town in BC for 2022, and after an hour strolling through town, it’s easy to see why.

The small downtown core is centered around the Platzl, and is pedestrian only, making it a perfect place to visit in the summer.

It’s fun to walk around and admire the German-influenced architecture, as this community bodes the nickname ‘Little Bavaria.’

Go Ziplining Over Dry Gulch

wine tours in invermere bc

If you’ve never gone ziplining before, this is the place to do it. Valley Zipline Adventures take you and a guide on 7 zipline through the dry gulch valley.

All the staff are friendly and helpful and made the experience so much. We’ve ziplined in Mexico before and almost weren’t going to try this one, but I’m so glad we did.

Their system of clips makes it fool proof and super safe and it was SO SO much fun. Plan for about an hour and half here.

Soak in Natural Hot Springs

Lussier hot springs – natural hot springs near invermere.

wine tours in invermere bc

The Lussier Hot Springs located in Whiteswan Lake Provincial Park are the closest and most accessible natural hot springs to Invermere.

You’ll have to take Whiteswan Lake Forest Road for about 30 minutes to reach the parking lot for the hot springs. Then it’s a 5 minute walk down to pools that have been built up with boulders alongside the river.

Ram Creek Hot Springs

Ram Creek Hot Springs are 3 rock pools in the middle of the forest, only accessible by hiking for about 40 minutes. The springs aren’t scorching hot – more like bathwater temperature, but the setting is phenomenal.

They’re a bit tricky to find, but doable. Here’s how to get to Ram Creek Hot Springs .

Fairmont Natural Hot Springs

wine tours in invermere bc

Behind the commercial pools at the Fairmont Hot Springs, there are ‘natural’ hot springs down below. They’re actually formed from the pool runoff above, but it makes for a unique adventure.

The pool runoff creates a warm waterfall, which has carved out a few small pools for bathers to enjoy. Park in the main parking lot and walk towards the RV Park. But turn right to descend down to the natural area.

Read more about how to find them here, in my post about 3 natural hot springs you can visit in one road trip .

Fairmont Indian Baths

Perched above a small hill overlooking the Fairmont Hot Springs building are the Fairmont Indian Baths, which are the old stone houses that originally house the hot mineral springs water.

A short 2 minute hike will take you up the hill to view the bath house ruins as well as the source of the springs which is a small pool that you can dip your feet in. Careful, it’s hot!

Hidden Gem Lakes for Swimming, Cliff Jumping and Kayaking

wine tours in invermere bc

If you continue down the road from Lussier Hot Springs, you’ll reach one of the best swimming lakes near Invermere.

It’s crystal clear and never busy, making it the perfect spot for a hot summer day. If you have a kayak or canoe, even better – as this is a long and calm lake to explore. There’s a campground here too.

Twin Lakes/Bottomless Lake

man standing on a cliff looking at the turquoise water below

This is a popular spot for cliff jumping not too far from Invermere. It’s a small but deep lake, but be warned, it’s very cold!

The water is also very calm and still, so bring your floaties or SUPs. The water is so beautiful, it’s a milky green turquoise color.

Follow Windermere Loop road east from Highway 93 for about 10 minutes and then another 5 minute walk through the trees brings you to this lake.

Quartz Lake/Rockbluff Lake

wine tours in invermere bc

Located in Premier Lake Provincial Park is this stunning crystal clear lake surrounded by slate rock cliffs.

You’ll have to drive on a narrow gravel road that’s more like a trail, so a higher-clearance or 4×4 vehicle is recommended – however, we were able to make it in a honda civic.

Once you’re there, it’s quiet, it’s tranquil and breathtakingly beautiful. There’s a small beach and picnic area, a boat launch area and dry pit toilets.

Another emerald green clear lake for swimming, kayaking and SUPing. There’s a day use area as well as a campground. Look for the rope swings!

Whitetail Lake

West of Canal Flats is a hidden gem – Whitetail Lake where you can hang out beside (or in) the turquoise blue water.

This is a great spot to visit if you’re looking for a picturesque lake without any hiking involved, as you can drive right up to the day use area on the north side of the lake.

Hikes Near Invermere

wine tours in invermere bc

Mt Swansea Lookout Trail

If you can make it to the top of Swansea Mountain Road, it’s only a 15 minute hike to the summit which provides some of the best views of the entire Columbia Valley.

There’s also 7 shorter hiking trails all over Mt Swansea and you can hike to an abandoned copper mining cave. It’s a 5 minute hike down from the summit parking lot.

Bumpy Meadows and Pedley Pass

Pedley Pass is where you’ll get to view Mt. Assiniboine, nicknamed the Matterhorn of Canada because of its striking similarity to the more well-known mountain peak in Switzerland.

Welsh Lakes

Lake of the hanging glacier.

wine tours in invermere bc

A true hidden gem in all of British Columbia, this hike brings you to a lake that easily rivals Moraine Lake and Lake Louise with its vibrant cyan blue color surrounded by glacier covered mountain peaks. This is a 16km out and back trail.

Geary Lookout Loop

This is an easy hike that starts from the RV park at the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort, and brings you past the lookout over the natural hot springs.

Hoodoo Trail

The Hoodoo Trail is a fun hike for the family. It’s just enough effort to feel like a hike, but no experience necessary. It’s uphill most of the way on a slow incline.

You’ll start the hike through the forest and end up top above the sandy hoodoos overlooking the valley.

Juniper Loop Trail

Descend through old growth cedar trees into Sinclair Canyon along the creek bed. You’ll have no idea you’re directly below the highway!

Leisurely Walks with Epic Views

Olive Lake is an adorable turquoise clear water lake with a great picnic area and washrooms. The trail is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

Old Coach Trail

A Wide gravel trail suitable for all abilities. Provides a nice overview of the entire region.

Wilmer Wetlands Walk

Horseback trail riding.

wine tours in invermere bc

We went on a scenic afternoon horseback trail ride through the Kootenay wilderness.

It was a calm ride with gorgeous scenery through the forest and across a creek we booked it through the Fairmont Hot Springs resort, more information here .

River Tubing and Floating

You can float down the Columbia River from Invermere to Radium Hot Springs. A serene way to spend a few hours near Invermere if you’re not into hiking or hot springs.

If you bring your own tube, this activity is totally free. Otherwise you can rent tubes from the gas station or the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

Stay in a Mountain Cabin

wine tours in invermere bc

Sometimes the best way to soak up the essence of the mountains is to stay in your own private cabin among the forest.

In my opinion, this is the best way to spend a few days in the area.  You’ll be able to enjoy views from your porch and have space to breathe in the fresh mountain air.

Plus, it’s nice to make your own coffee and cook dinner and most cabins that you can rent are self contained with everything you need.

My favorite cabins to rent near Invermere are the Fairmont Mountain Bungalows .

They’re affordably priced and pet friendly. And there’s a brand new hot tub and outdoor pool on site too.

Wildlife Viewing

wine tours in invermere bc

Bighorn Sheep in Radium

When you visit Invermere and the Columbia Valley, there’s a high chance you’ll see all kinds of wildlife. Head closer to Radium Hot Springs where you’ll often find bighorn sheep roaming around town and crossing the roads.

Painted Turtles

Visit Lillian Lake to search for the painted turtles who call this lake home! You’ll usually find them sunbathing on logs near the shore.

This is also a great spot for swimming in the summer (there’s a floating dock) or a nice picnic area.

Wine Tasting

Pommier Ranch Meadery is a relatively new mead producer just outside of Skookumchuk.

You can stop in for a tour and a tasting of some interesting meads (honey wine) – the juniper and ginger meads are so unique!

Even if you’re not sure if you’re a fan of mead, the rural setting is charming and the mead maker is friendly and passionate.

Go on a Photo Journey Around the World

wine tours in invermere bc

The east Kootenays are full of epic scenery and fascinating architecture. Make a day out of finding cool photography spots to jazz up your Instagram feed.

For some inspiration, wander through Radium Hot Springs and stage some photos to make it look like you’re in Bavaria, Germany, or Austria.

Find the iron red rock cliffs that make it seem like you’re in Sedona, Arizona.

Pose with the Hoodoos to make it look like you’re on another planet, maybe Tatooine perhaps?

Or go back in time by visiting the village of Wilmer, and snap photos of the historic Delphine Lodge, which looks like it’s stuck in the early 1900s.

Cycle (or run/walk) the Westside Legacy Trail

This is a paved multi-use trail that recently opened, which allows you to cycle from Invermere to Fairmont Hot Springs.

It’s 25 kilometres in length and has several parking lots along the way, so you can do the trail in segments if you wish to walk or run. There’s also benches and picnic areas to make a whole day out of it!

Waterfall Hiking: Findlay Falls

A short hike to scenic waterfalls with minimal elevation gain. Visit on a sunny day and the water will be sparkling in its full turquoise display.

Mountain Biking

Not only are there hundreds of mountain biking trails around Invermere and all over the east Kootenays, there are two bike parks and pump tracks in the area.

You’ll find one in Radium Hot Springs and the other beside the Invermere Skate Park.

A popular and scenic mountain bike trail is at the Lake Lillian Recreation Site. Follow the Johnson to bike along a canyon rim.

You can also go downhill mountain biking at Panorama Mountain Resort in the summer.

Funtasia Fun Park

This is a quirky adventure park hidden among the forest where you can play mini golf, bumper cars, walk through a forest labyrinth and hang out with donkeys, goats and alpacas.

Chairlift Sightseeing

All the views without the effort! In the summer, you can head to the Panorama Mountain Resort and take one of the chairlifts to an elevation of 5,300 feet.

At the top you can enjoy the views and take in the freshest mountain air, or hike around among the alpine wildflowers.

Canada’s Highest Suspension Bridge

Located in Golden, about one hour north of Invermere, is the Golden Skybridge, which is currently Canada’s highest suspension bridge.

Just opened in 2021, you’ll be 426 feet above a canyon, overlooking both the Purcell and Rocky mountain ranges.

There are actually two bridges (one has more sway), a giant swing and some extra activities like tree top climbing.

More information and pricing here .

ATV and SXS Tours

Exploring the Columbia Valley on an ATV allows you to see parts of the wilderness you never otherwise would.

With Toby Creek Adventures you can take half-day tours either as a driver or a passenger, and see sights like an abandoned mining town or hidden waterfalls.
