Why I love to Zumba on a Cruise

When I cruise I always enjoy taking part in a Zumba class.  You may be reading this thinking “Are you crazy?  You’re on a cruise, sit back and relax!” but it is something that I really, really enjoy.

I’ve never mentioned this before in my blog but I am a Zumba Instructor (only part-time alongside my day job) and so when I go on a cruise it’s my chance to just stand at the back and enjoy the class for what it is.  To just go for it and dance without having to thinking about the next steps, having to give directional cues and keep my class motivated.  It’s refreshing and I find that it’s a great start to a sea day.

b7cbcd5f-b0cd-4c48-ba60-0ea9961853fd-1324-0000013946fee29c

The morning Zumba classes are always fairly busy but if the cruise puts on an afternoon class, these tend to be quieter (even I struggle to tear myself away from the pool and cocktails).

There are always a range of abilities and ages that go to these classes but the beauty of Zumba is that you can tailor the workout to suit you.

The Zumba classes are held in various venues on cruise ships, it’s always best to check the daily cruise planner as I turned up at the wrong place once and then had to hit the stairs to get to the other venue (warm-up done!).  I’ve taken Zumba classes in the cruise ship’s night club, on the top deck (nice cool breeze) and in the ship’s atrium (expect spectators!).

Do you know what one of the best things about doing Zumba on a cruise?  Going to the buffet for breakfast sweaty but guilt-free!

You can find Zumba class on board  Princess Cruises and Celebrity Cruises.  Shannon Shall talks about her experience of working on Celebrity Cruises as a Zumba instructor on the Every Woman Blog .

Zumba cruise

If you fancy taking Zumba and cruising to the next level, perhaps you should consider a Zumba Cruise.  This is an annual cruise for Zumba lovers to sail with Royal Caribbean with the opportunity to shimmy and shake to your heart’s content.  The five-night Caribbean cruise is packed with Zumba classes, parties and competitions but it might be worth booking yourself another holiday afterward to recover!

Happy cruising!

Why The Zumba Cruise Was The Best Workout Vacation I've Ever Had

What do you do when someone asks you to take on a five-day trip from Miami, Florida to Nassau, Bahamas and Cozumel, Mexico? What if said trip involved dancing and working out from sunup to sundown, with over 3,200 people you’ve never met? And what if you experienced this and more while sailing across the Gulf of Mexico? All of these questions — plus excitement, nervousness, and uncertainty — crossed my mind after I read the email inviting me to take on Zumba Fitness’ 2nd annual Zumba Cruise.

What was I nervous about? For one, I can’t swim. Okay, I take that back. I can float and tread water on my back well enough to keep my head above water. Two, the idea of being on a 15-deck ship, for the first time, was a little unsettling. I couldn’t help but think about the possibility of having to sucker punch someone over a life vest (because, Titanic). Three, I like Zumba, but not that much to do it all day, every day . ( STRONG by Zumba is actually my preferred type of fitness class, but I digress). And four, what if I get sea sick? What if everyone looks totally fit and I’m over here struggling to get into my two-year-old swimsuit that I hope I can still fit? After quieting my racing thoughts, I finally convinced myself to take on the opportunity that many people have yet to experience.

Once I arrived at the dock in Miami, I walked to the end of the line filled with people from all walks of life, decked out in their favorite Zumba gear. Many people were friendly (in fact, I didn’t see a frown or sad face throughout the trip) and smiling from ear to ear, as we inched closer to the Royal Caribbean ship waiting for our arrival. I checked into my room, watched the sun set and immediately all of my worries flew out of the window. The moment we set sea into the vast dark-blue water, I knew the tropical excursion would be an unforgettable one.

After nearly a week of being away from the mainland (and strong Wi-Fi signals), I realized that I got my entire life. In fact, the Zumba Cruise served as a much-needed workout vacation. If my next time away from home and work involved breaking a sweat while enjoying the view of beautiful weather, I’d sign up again. In all honesty, though, if it weren’t for the following six aspects of the trip, I probably wouldn’t have enjoyed it nearly as much.

1. The Energetic Music

What’s a party without good music? When it comes to the Zumba Cruise, body-shaking music is far from a shortage. Throughout the length of the trip, bass-thumping tunes echoed throughout the ship, both inside and outside on various decks. No matter where I walked, I couldn’t help but get into the feel-good vibes and join happy people from all over the world, dancing in unison to an instructor-led, choreographed class.

The best part of there being great music at all times of the day is the fact that I expanded my love of music while being exposed to more eclectic genres like soca, reggaeton and electronic music. Wyclef Jean and Shaggy took to the stage for separate concerts and brought the nostalgic vibes with their performances. I was definitely there for it.

2. The Energy

From sunup to sundown, each day felt like another celebratory moment. In between refueling with food and taking a break for energy, the pulse of the music pumped as I took on conditioning classes like Aqua Zumba, Dancehall Mashup or, my favorite, the Beyonce Experience. Every class started with enthusiastic and happy people ready to break a sweat and move their body to the music.

Not only was I able to have a good time, but I was able to do so and just dance, without any judgment, self-consciousness or feeling of competition. No matter where I walked on the ship, I never saw one frown or stoic face. There was just an all-around friendly, positive vibe and I appreciated that.

It’s Day 3 and you find out there’s a @Zumba class called “Queen #Bey Experience” so you walk fiercely to the front…Yaaassss 😅💦#ZumbaCruise A post shared by Christine Imarenezor (@eboseta) on Apr 29, 2017 at 10:54pm PDT

3. The Activities

Like any other cruise ship, there’s always something interesting to do. On the Navigator of the Seas, I was able to take on standup surfing and rock climbing. Each day offered a morning stretch class, karaoke, movie screenings and a happy hour.

Outside of taking Zumba classes on multiple decks and in various rooms, live performances were given each night for those looking to just have a good time with their family and/or friends, even if it’s listening to guitar jams or dancing to salsa hits.

There was so much to take in that it was impossible to catch everything, but, I will say the #ZumbaCruise was an unforgettable experience. It’s amazing how a love for dance can bring all walks of life together (from all over the world) to one happy and positive place. A big thank you to my sis @osazomon and new friends @brittnebabe & @kimmypie for saying “hell yes” to this crazy, fun and long adventure. Of course, I’ll be sharing my experience and interviews with Brittne Babe, @wyclefjean and @direalshaggy very soon. Thank you Sam and @zumba for having @vibemagazine on board! 🙏🏽🙌🏾💪🏾 #HappyFitQueen A post shared by Christine Imarenezor (@eboseta) on Apr 30, 2017 at 10:47am PDT

4. The Destinations

During the five-day, four-night journey, the Zumba Cruise made two stops: Nassau and Cozumel. Each stop offered tourist activities like boat tours, visiting a chocolate factory, snorkeling, nature walks and swimming with dolphins. This was definitely a relief to the hours spent on the ship. I was happy to properly stretch and get some fresh air.

I simply hit up the beach, soaked up some more sun and took a walk around town to find authentic eats. As far as local cuisine, I managed to find some delicious tacos and margaritas while in Mexico and tried fried conch for the first time in the Bahamas. There’s nothing like tasting non-American food and enjoying it!

The beaches were immaculate and the clear blue waters were simply unforgettable.

Next stop: Cozumel! 🙌🏾 Can we talk about the tacos y margarita I had though?! 🌮🍹😻 #ZumbaCruise A post shared by Christine Imarenezor (@eboseta) on Apr 29, 2017 at 11:25pm PDT

5. The Workouts

Every class leader was genuinely happy to be there. As I took on different classes throughout the ship, I noticed that a lot of the instructors were taking on classes just like me. In fact, a lot of them just jumped in and supported their fellow Zumba instructors. I didn’t feel insecure about my figure or non-toned physique in comparison to that of the teachers. I didn’t feel like every move I learned had to be done perfectly. Each leader instructed the choreography with enthusiasm and non-judgment.

Besides of the Beyonce Experience class, my favorite class was hands down STRONG By Zumba . Don’t get me wrong. I like to dance and move like anyone else who loves music, but I also enjoy experiencing intensity when it comes to moving and getting my blood flowing. This class was by far, the most intense one. I had never done so many burpees and squats in one workout. I loved every minute of it and really felt like I was burning off all the not-so nutritious calories I indulged in.

More Than A Follow: Brittne Babe Is A Fitspiration

6. the relaxation.

Although the energy during the trip was positive and upbeat, there were many chill, low key opportunities to truly enjoy vacation mode. There was a spa on board that offered facials, massages and acupuncture. When an Aqua Zumba class wasn’t in session, the pool was always open to those looking to relax and lay in the sun. The fitness center had a hot tub where I often relaxed my sore muscles.

The bright, sunny weather undeniably added to the stress-free energy. The endless body of water as we sailed from destination to destination really brought on a sense of zen as I sat on the balcony of my room. The on-and-off Wi-fi was greatly appreciated as it allowed me to really detach from my electronic devices and live in the moment.

If you love to travel, love to work out and, of course, love to dance, then next year’s Zumba Cruise might be the one for you. I, for one, am still day dreaming about my once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What warm Sunday morning day dreams are made of… 🌴🌴🌴 A post shared by Christine Imarenezor (@eboseta) on Apr 30, 2017 at 5:57am PDT

Celebrity Cruises Pumps Up Fitness Program With Zumba Fitness Parties

Modern luxury brand Celebrity Cruises has announced another illustration of how consumers can keep their New Year’s resolution to stay fit while vacationing. The brand has expanded its already robust portfolio of fitness options by partnering with global lifestyle brand Zumba ® Fitness to offer Celebrity guests a variety of its popular classes.                         In addition to the original classes, Celebrity will offer guests a range of complimentary specialty classes that vary by ship, including Aqua Zumba ® , the ultimate “pool party” workout; Zumbatomic ® , Zumba routines for kids, and Zumba Gold ® , for active, older adults. In the true essence of Zumba, the parties are all about moving, enjoying the music and having fun.   Known as “exercise in disguise,” Zumba classes blend upbeat world rhythms with easy-to-follow choreography to provide effective, total-body workouts. Meet Steve, the owner of Barracuda Travel, he has driven us back and forth to Ports all over Florida.   He picks us up in the studio parking lot at ZumbaSarasota.com 4900 Fruitville Rd. Sarasota, FL 34232 at approx 10am EST on Thursday the 6th and returns us to the same place on Monday morning the 10th.

This year we are excited to again have a bus departing from Punta Gorda for Robert's group.  Pick up will be at the Punta Gorda YMCA at approx 9am on the 6th.

We usually are back at both locations on Monday between 10 and 11am.

Bus Details

If you are looking for a quiet ride over to the Port of Tampa, our bus may not be for you.  We call it the party bus and there may possibly be alcoholic beverages on the bus.   Please bring garbage bags with you so we can keep the bus tidy for Steve.

People often ask if they can leave their cars in the studio parking lot while on the trip.  We would suggest getting dropped off if possible, cars left in the studio parking lot over the weekend are at your own risk.

Dining Details

Cabin questions.

We are at the 5:30pm dining time and we sit together nightly.  Your dining table will be on your room keycard from Royal Caribbean and we do our best to sit people together who have requested it.  There are various table sizes in the dining room and sometimes we have to work with the area we have been assigned.

People often ask to sit with their favorite instructor so we often try to rotate each night where instructors are at different tables during the cruise.  If we are short on space and this doesn't work out we will visit for dessert!

2024 Cruise Pics & More

Can Non-Zumba Sarasota members join the cruise?  Of course they can!  People often ask if they can bring friends, children or spouses.  Anyone is welcome to join us whether or not they want to do our fitness classes.  We always need photographers and people to cheer us on!  We are always happy to meet new friends they are most welcome!

Do we decorate doors?  Sure, but just do it if you want to be found!  Bring your door decor with you as well as tape.

Some suitcases arrive outside your cabin door sooner than others.  Don't panic, they will arrive!

Travel Documentation

Check your passport now and see when it expires.  If you need to update it, now is the time.  It is possible to travel without a passport, however it is not recommended.   If you do not intend to have a valid passport, please let Fantasy Travel know at time of booking and they can give you information about alternative documentation.  ***You will need your passport or other documentation to board the ship, do not place it in your checked bags.

Teaching Zumba on a Cruise...

I know of at least one poster that is a Zumba instructor that was able to teach a couple classes on one of their cruises. I just finished my instructor training April 7!! :D

Could we start a discussion on how to teach a class on a ship? Who do you talk to? Can you get it set up beforehand? Do you need any other licensing besides Zumba (like CPR/AED)? Was there a sound system to use? Did you just bring your iPod?

Please note...I'm not talking about trying to do an "official cruise" Zumba class...just like a demo or something unofficial...not for pay either...I'm not taking a cruise until March 2012 so I have plenty of time to get prepared...I'd just like to know what to do to get prepared.

I am not an instructor, but I had the good fortune of having a Zumba instructor as a fellow passenger on my last cruise. I met her on Day 2 of our 11 day transatlantic, and she taught a free class every day, except our 1 port day! Apparently there was only one person in class the first day (I met her later that day), but after that we had anywhere from 3 to 9 people in the class. She was delighted! She said she was planning on doing it by herself anyway, so she was glad to have company.

I'm not sure what arrangements, if any, she made with NCL. There were 3 extra classrooms in the fitness center, and we just used one of them after the pilates/yoga class finished at 9:30AM. There was a sound system in there, and she used her iPod. She made sure that we knew that we were liable for ourselves.

We had really calm seas, except for one day, when they were 14+ feet. That made it just a little more challenging.:D

I did see a sign-up sheet for a ship-sponsored Zumba class---for $20:eek:

Congrats on becoming an instructor! Off to post on your other thread!:)

You're only 3+ hours from Seward.......... you could easily teach on back 2 back southbound and northbound cruises! Perfect!!!!!

I got in contact with an NCL rep before the cruise to get permission and be assigned a room and time for my classes on the Epic. I gathered people from my roll call to participate in class, they wouldn't let me advertise on ship. They gave me 4:30 pm time slots because thats when they didn't have any other group x classes going on so it wasn't very convenient, but hey, i was able to teach 3 classes that week so i was happy! They never asked to see my license or for my CPR/aed/first aid certs. I'm hoping to start up classes on my next cruise this winter on the Pearl. We'll see if they bite.

I just got back from the Navigator on Jan 3rd...

on day 2... 1st day at sea... on the itinerary was Latin fitness on deck at 9:30am.

I got there about 15 minutes before the class started... I went up to the young lady that was scheduled to teach it... I was all decked out in my Zumba gear...Ipod in hand...

I approached her and asked her if she was a Zumba Instructor... she said very quickly "No, are you?" I said "Yes would you like em to teach the class for you?

She replied " yes, I have bad knees, (pointing to her knee braces on both knees) but the last 2 days at sea and I'll tell my cruise director about it". I saw her altor on that week several times and she assured me I weas teaching it. and Lo and behold... I did it was awesome... for those that want to do it... just find the activites director early on in your cruise and approach them, bring your ZIN license as they will want to make sure you are ZIN... just because you wear Zumba leggings doesn't mean anything to them....

That's awesome you had luck with that! I pre-scheduled to teach on the NCL Epic and RCCL Independence 4 years ago. They put my classes in the newsletter so I had great turnouts on the independence (needed proof of license, group x cert and international liability insurance). But since then, both NCL and RCCL won't agree to letting me do it. NCL has gotten a lot of their staff licensed to teach now. I'll have to try your method on my next cruise in a week!

April 12, 2024 - Israel-Hamas war

By Chris Lau, Sana Noor Haq, Adrienne Vogt , Matt Meyer and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage of Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza has moved  here .

USAID worker killed in Israel, agency says

From CNN's Jennifer Hansler

A staff member with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) died Friday in the Israeli port city of Jaffa, the agency announced.

The male staffer was with USAID’s West Bank and Gaza mission, the agency said in a brief statement.

USAID did not provide details on the circumstances around his death or his identity or citizenship.

“He was a dedicated member of our team for more than two decades, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues,” USAID said.

USAID is working with the US Embassy to work out details about the fatal incident and its follow-up investigation, it said.

US expects Iran to carry out direct strikes against targets inside Israel, sources say

From CNN's MJ Lee and Natasha Bertrand

The United States currently expects Iran will carry out strikes against multiple targets inside Israel and that Iranian proxies could also be involved in carrying out the attacks, according to a senior administration official and a source familiar with the intelligence.

The targets would likely be both inside Israel and around the region.

The beginning of a state-on-state conflict between Iran and Israel would mark a serious escalation in the region that the US has hoped to avoid.

US sees Iran moving military assets including drones and cruise missiles, sources say

From Natasha Bertrand and Oren Liebermann

The US observed Iran moving military assets around internally, including drones and cruise missiles, signaling that it is possibly preparing to attack Israeli targets from inside its own territory, according to two people familiar with US intelligence.

It is not clear whether Iran is preparing to strike from its soil as part of an initial attack, or if it is posturing to try to deter Israel or the US from conducting a possible counter strike on its territory.

One of the people said the US had observed Iran readying as many as 100 cruise missiles.

Some context: The Iranians want their retaliatory strike on Israel — a response to the Israeli strike on an Iranian consulate last week in Damascus — to be "significant," one of the people familiar with the intelligence said. But they also want to avoid getting embroiled in a direct war with Israel and the US, CNN has reported, which is why US intelligence has assessed that Iran may use its proxy forces to launch the first attack.

Israeli settlers storm village in West Bank and kill at least 1 Palestinian. Here's what you should know

From CNN staff

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars — and leaving at least one Palestinian dead — in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

The settlers attacked Al-Mughayyir village, east of Ramallah, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, according to Amin Abu-Alia, the head of the village council. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

Here are other headlines you should know:

  • More Israeli attacks: An Israeli airstrike early Friday killed at least 29 people and injured dozens more after troops targeted a house belonging to the well-known Al-Tabatibi family in eastern Gaza City, according to a local health official. Israeli forces also surrounded and attacked the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, wounding several journalists and at least one other person. And in the occupied West Bank, troops killed two Hamas members in a raid on the city of Tubas, according to Israeli and Palestinian officials.
  • Hezbollah-Israel clashes: Around 40 rockets were fired from Lebanon on Friday evening, according to the Israeli military. Some were intercepted and the rest fell in open areas, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement. Israeli warplanes also carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, the IDF said.
  • Iranian threats: US President Joe Biden told reporters Friday he expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," with the White House adding that there is a "very credible" threat of Iranian retaliatory strikes against Israel. Additionally, the US Defense Department is moving additional assets to the Middle East region, a defense official told CNN, as the US and Israel brace for the potential attack . Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and US Central Command Commander Gen. Erik Kurilla on Friday discussed preparations for the  potential attack .
  • Warnings amid Iranian threats: France , Germany, Canada and the United States are among countries that are warning their citizens not to travel to the region due to the threat of an Iranian attack against Israel.
  • Humanitarian aid: The Israeli military does not understand how humanitarian operations work, a top United Nations official said Friday, maintaining there is a "degree of mistrust" that needs to be resolved between the IDF and nongovernmental organizations on the ground in Gaza.
  • Sanctions: The European Council has  adopted sanctions  against three Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad entities , in light of "their responsibilities in the brutal and indiscriminate terrorist attacks" that occurred across Israel on October 7. The US is also sanctioning four leaders of Hamas’ cyber and drone operations based in Gaza and Lebanon, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller announced on Friday.

US will attempt to intercept launches at Israel if feasible, US officials say

From CNN's Oren Liebermann and Natasha Bertrand

The US will attempt to intercept any weapons launched at Israel if it’s feasible to do so, two US officials told CNN, in an indication of the level of ongoing cooperation between the two militaries before an anticipated Iranian attack .

US Navy forces in the Red Sea have previously intercepted long-range missiles launched from the Houthis in Yemen toward Israel. US forces in Iraq and Syria could also potentially intercept drones and rockets targeting northern Israel, depending on the location from which they’re launched.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, the commander of US Central Command, has been in Israel meeting with the country’s security leadership. On Friday, the Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, met with Kurilla.

There have been a number of conversations where US officials have urged Israel not to escalate the situation in retaliating against Iran, according to one of the US officials.

Remember: An Iranian attack is expected in response to Israel’s deadly strike of Tehran's consulate in Damascus, Syria, last week.

The Damascus attack was the latest incident to stoke fears of a wider regional conflict breaking out in the Middle East during Israel's campaign in Gaza.

Diplomatic efforts: US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held a slew of calls to foreign counterparts aimed at pressuring Iran not to attack Israel.

The top US diplomat spoke with Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Friday, according to a readout from State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

Blinken also spoke with the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi foreign ministers in recent days, Miller said.

Israeli settlers kill at least 1 Palestinian while storming West Bank village

From CNN’s Kareem Khadder and Zeena Saifi in Jerusalem and CNN’s Benjamin Brown in London

A view of damaged houses and burning vehicles after a raid by Israeli settlers on a town near Ramallah, West Bank on April 12.

Hundreds of armed Israeli settlers stormed a village in the occupied West Bank on Friday, setting fire to several homes and cars in one of the largest attacks by settlers this year, according to Palestinian officials.

At least one Palestinian man was killed when shots were fired by Israeli settlers in the village of Al-Mughayyir, east of Ramallah, according to the head of the village council Amin Abu-Alia. He said he identified the killed Palestinian as his 26-year-old relative named Jihad Abu-Alia, who was meant to get married this summer.

At least 25 others were injured in the rampage, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Ramallah, the scale of which has not been seen since hundreds of settlers stormed through the villages of  Turmusayya  and  Huwara  in two separate incidents last year.

Between 1,000 and 1,200 settlers surrounded the village, and around 500 stormed it just after midday local time on Friday, blocking all the roads in the area, Abu-Alia told CNN.

He added that Israeli security forces informed Palestinian officials that the settlers were looking for a 14-year-old Israeli boy who had gone missing earlier in the day.

They attacked the village, raided homes and fired gunshots at residents, Abu-Alia said. Videos obtained by CNN show parts of the village burning, with smoke billowing over several buildings and settlers lobbing rocks. Houses and cars are seen completely burnt up, with sounds of gunfire and clashes heard in the background.

According to Abu-Alia, the Israeli military arrived at the scene at around 3 p.m. and didn’t stop the settlers from attacking the village. Israeli soldiers allowed them to raid homes, prevented Palestinian residents from moving around and blocked ambulances from reaching the injured, he added.

Abu-Alia told CNN settlers stole approximately 70 sheep from the Palestinian village.

In response to a question by CNN, the IDF said “violent riots were instigated in multiple locations in the area” following the search for the boy.

Israel says airstrikes targeted Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon

Israeli warplanes carried out several airstrikes on Friday, targeting "military buildings" used by Hezbollah fighters in parts of southern Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

The areas include the Aita al-Shaab and the Taybeh in southern Lebanon, said Avichay Adraee, I DF spokesperson for Arab media,  in a post on X.

"During the day, several shells were fired from Lebanon towards the Upper Galilee region, without causing any casualties. IDF forces attacked the sources of fire," Adraee added.

The Israeli airstrikes were before the 40 rockets that were launched from Lebanon toward northern Israel Friday evening and claimed by Hezbollah.

Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen "sooner than later"

From CNN's Samantha Waldenberg

US President Joe Biden gives remarks in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building on the White House campus on Friday in Washington, DC.

US President Joe Biden expects an attack from Iran will happen “sooner than later," he told reporters at the White House Friday.

“I don’t want to get into secure information but my expectation is sooner than later,” Biden said when asked how imminent an attack on Israel was.

Asked what his message to Tehran is right now, the president said “Don’t.”

In response to more shouted questions from reporters asking if American troops were at risk, Biden returned to the podium and said that the United States is "devoted” to the defense of Israel.

“We will support Israel. We will help defend Israel and Iran will not succeed,” Biden said.

Remember: The United States says it is on high alert for a significant Iranian retaliatory attack following Israel's deadly strike on Tehran's consulate in Damascus last week, raising fears of a wider regional war. There remains a “real,” “credible” and “viable” threat of Iran launching strikes, the White House said earlier Friday, following Israel’s attack on  a diplomatic compound in Syria that killed three Iranian generals.

A Look at Iran’s Military Capabilities

The direct military confrontation between Iran and Israel has brought renewed attention to Iran’s armed forces. What are they capable of?

The start of a direct military confrontation between Iran and Israel has brought renewed attention to Iran’s armed forces. Early this month, Israel attacked a building in Iran’s diplomatic compound in the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing seven of Iran’s senior commanders and military personnel .

Iran vowed to retaliate, and did so about two weeks later, starting a broad aerial attack on Israel on Saturday involving hundreds of drones and missiles aimed at targets inside Israel and the territory it controls.

Here’s a look at Iran’s military and its capabilities.

Why is Iran’s military relevant right now?

Israeli officials had said they would respond to any attack by Iran with a counterattack, which could prompt further retaliation from Iran and possibly expand into a wider regional war. There is even a chance that a conflict of that sort could drag in the United States, although Washington has made clear it had nothing to do with the Damascus attack.

Analysts say that Iran’s adversaries, primarily the United States and Israel, have avoided direct military strikes on Iran for decades, not wishing to tangle with Tehran’s complex military apparatus. Instead, Israel and Iran have been engaged in a long shadow war via air, sea, land and cyberattacks, and Israel has covertly targeted military and nuclear facilities inside Iran and killed commanders and scientists.

“There is a reason Iran has not been struck,” said Afshon Ostovar, an associate professor of national security affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School and an expert on Iran’s military. “It’s not that Iran’s adversaries fear Iran. It’s that they realize any war against Iran is a very serious war.”

What sort of military threat does Iran pose?

The Iranian armed forces are among the largest in the Middle East, with at least 580,000 active-duty personnel and about 200,000 trained reserve personnel divided among the traditional army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, according to an annual assessment last year by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

The army and the Guards each have separate and active ground, air and naval forces, with the Guards responsible for Iran’s border security. The General Staff of the Armed Forces coordinates the branches and sets the overall strategy.

The Guards also operate the Quds Force, an elite unit in charge of arming, training and supporting the network of proxy militias throughout the Middle East known as the “axis of resistance.” These militias include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, militia groups in Syria and Iraq and Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza.

Power by Proxy: How Iran Shapes the Mideast

A guide to the armed groups that let Iran extend its influence throughout the region.

The commander in chief of Iran’s armed forces is the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the last word on all major decisions.

While the proxy militias are not counted as part of Iran’s armed forces, analysts say they are considered an allied regional force — battle ready, heavily armed and ideologically loyal — and could come to Iran’s aid if it was attacked.

“The level of support and types of systems Iran has provided for nonstate actors is really unprecedented in terms of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles,” said Fabian Hinz, an expert on Iran’s military at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Berlin. “They could be viewed as part of Iran’s military capability, especially Hezbollah, which has the closest strategic relationship with Iran.”

What kinds of weapons does Iran have?

For decades, Iran’s military strategy has been anchored in deterrence, emphasizing the development of precision and long-range missiles, drones and air defenses. It has built a large fleet of speedboats and some small submarines that are capable of disrupting shipping traffic and global energy supplies that pass through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has one of the largest arsenals of ballistic missiles and drones in the Middle East, Mr. Ostovar said. That includes cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles, as well as ballistic missiles with ranges up to 2,000 kilometers, or more than 1,200 miles. These have the capacity and range to hit any target in the Middle East, including Israel.

In recent years, Tehran has assembled a large inventory of drones with ranges of around 1,200 to 1,550 miles and capable of flying low to evade radar, according to experts and Iranian commanders who have given public interviews to the state news media. Iran has made no secret of the buildup, displaying its trove of drones and missiles during military parades, and has ambitions to build a large export business in drones. Iran’s drones are being used by Russia in Ukraine and have surfaced in the conflict in Sudan.

The country’s bases and storage facilities are widely dispersed, buried deep underground and fortified with air defenses, making them difficult to destroy with airstrikes, experts say.

Where does Iran get its weapons?

International sanctions have cut Iran off from high-tech weaponry and military equipment manufactured abroad, like tanks and fighter jets.

During Iran’s eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s, few countries were willing to sell weapons to Iran. When Ayatollah Khamenei became Iran’s supreme leader in 1989, a year after the war ended, he commissioned the Guards to develop a domestic weapons industry and poured resources into the effort, which was widely reported in the Iranian news media. He wanted to assure that Iran would never again have to rely on foreign powers for its defense needs.

Today, Iran manufactures a large quantity of missiles and drones domestically and has prioritized that defense production, experts said. Its attempts to make armored vehicles and large naval vessels have met with mixed results. It also imports small submarines from North Korea while expanding and modernizing its domestically produced fleet .

How do other countries see Iran’s military, and what are its weaknesses?

Iran’s military is viewed as one of the strongest in the region in terms of equipment, cohesion, experience and quality of personnel, but it lags far behind the power and sophistication of the armed forces of the United States, Israel and some European countries, experts said.

Iran’s greatest weakness is its air force. Much of the country’s aircraft date from the era of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who led Iran from 1941 to 1979, and many have been disabled for lack of spare parts. The country also bought a small fleet from Russia in the 1990s, experts said.

Iran’s tanks and armored vehicles are old, and the country has only a few large naval vessels, experts said. Two intelligence gathering vessels, t he Saviz and Behshad, deployed on the Red Sea, have aided the Houthis in identifying Israeli-owned ships for attacks, American officials have said.

Will Israel’s attack disrupt Iran’s military?

The assassinations of the senior military officials are expected to have a short-term impact on Iran’s regional operations, having eliminated commanders with years of experience and relationships with the heads of the allied militias.

Nevertheless, the chain of command for the armed forces inside Iran remains intact, experts say.

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of a group in the Gaza Strip. It is Palestinian Islamic Jihad, not Islamic Palestinian Jihad.

Russia Maps Show 25% of Moscow Without Power Amid Winter Freeze 'Emergency'

Russian President Vladimir Putin has ordered the nationalization of an ammunition plant in Moscow after a mechanical failure caused tens of thousands of Muscovites to lose heat and water amid freezing temperatures beginning last week.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is around 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes in the Moscow region amid subzero temperatures.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov, Naro-Fominsk, and Podolsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky, and Selyatino are also without power.

That means that in total, more than a quarter of Moscow's cities have been hit with power outages and a lack of heating.

Newsweek has contacted Russia's Foreign Ministry for comment via email.

Many residents have taken to publishing video appeals on social media to complain about their freezing conditions. In one clip, people living in Moscow say that they are left with no choice but to warm their homes with gas stoves, heaters, and "whatever else we can find." Others said they are lighting fires in the streets to keep warm.

Andrei Vorobyov, governor of the Moscow region, announced on Tuesday that Putin ordered the ammunition plant to be nationalized because two of its owners have been "located abroad." He didn't name the individuals.

"We received the right to take control of this boiler house within the framework of an emergency," Vorobiev said, adding that the plant's boiler room was managed "very poorly" and there was "virtually no qualified competent personnel."

Russia's Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case over Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant not meeting safety requirements.

On Tuesday, the committee said that because of the incident, the deputy head of Podolsk's administration, the head of the plant's boiler house, and the general director of the ammunition plant had been detained.

Residents of Selyatino have described the situation as "some kind of struggle for survival," Russian Telegram channel ASTRA reported.

Power outages have also struck St. Petersburg, Rostov, Volgograd, Voronezh, Primorsky Territory, and Yekaterinburg.

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.
