From Nick’s warm welcome greeting, the delicious and creative menu options from Chef, the magnificent “tent” accommodations and Jonno, our safari guide, finding the one of a kind moments on each and every safari drive, Rhino Sands is without compare. What an amazing experience! A special thank you to Nick for the surprise evening you prepared for my wife and I to celebrate our anniversary. We will absolutely be back.

Super Special

The most amazing place we have ever visited. Every single thing from the wonderful welcome by Spha, the amazing food cooked by Zanele and team, the fantastic service provided by Chris, welcome back from Safari from Nico and Storm and of course the best Safari guide ever in Anton who went out of his way to track the lions calls, find the leopard we so desperately wanted to see, and much more, this place was perfect in every way.

The ‘tents’ were stunning, your every need met. Beautifully decorated and very comfortable beds. We loved the electric blankets at night and hot water bottles on morning game drives to ward off the chill. The food was exquisite, and plentiful. The ice cream has to be given a special mention!

I honestly don’t have the words to describe just how special this place is. In the words of Oscar ‘the best 3 days I have ever had’.

Thank you so much to you all, we loved our time so much. We’ve already recommended you to lots of people and we’ll definitely definitely be back!!!

Decadence in the Wild

This is my 2nd stay at Rhino Sands, and I am just as impressed as the first time.

Upon arrival, the hot sandal wood-infused towels and warm greetings by the staff are a welcome respite from the long travel. The rooms are premium and comfortable, airy and spacious. The bathrooms suit a queen, with an indoor and outdoor shower and clawfoot tub for wind-downs after early morning or afternoon drives.

There are so many highlights to write about. Still, the elegant campfires, bespoke gin cocktails, incredible three-course dinners, beautiful pinotage, warmed beds in the evening, and top-level service and attention make you feel really special and relaxed.

The staff is the best. Each person brings their own unique personality, education, and love of their job to the experience.

We stayed five nights, and each touch blew away my entire group. I recommend Rhino Sands to anyone who wants a thoughtful, luxurious, and delicious getaway.

The Most Incredible Experience!

The most incredible place I have ever stayed. I chose Rhino Sands because it felt like an intimate place with only four tents available. The tents are so luxurious! It was pretty cold in the mornings and nights but the heated blankets helped. The staff was amazing! They took such great care of my husband and I on our honeymoon. Storm always made sure we were doing great and kept us filled up with drinks. Chris was always checking in on us as well. The food was absolutely delicious and felt like a five star restaurant. Our ranger, Jonno was amazing! We loved hearing how passionate he is about the bush. And it was nice to have regular life conversations with him getting to know each other and our lives. He tracked animals so effortlessly even in the dark. I don’t know how he does it. The first 2 nights we only had one family on the camp with us and then the last night two other couples came in. It was so fun to hang out with the staff and guests around the campfire. The lions got so close to camp the last night that we fell asleep to lion roars which is so cool. We were so sad to leave and cannot wait to come back one day. HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

A Truly Magical Experience, Wonderful in Every Way

The Rhino Sands team have made our first visit to the South African bush a very special experience; it was a magical adventure from start to finish. It is hard to write the words that will do it justice and describe just what a unique place it is.

We stayed for three nights and from the moment we were greeted at the entry of the lodge, we knew we would have a lovely stay. The hospitality from the entire team was warm, welcoming, kind, personalized and attentive but more importantly it was genuinely caring. They took extra care of us and went out of their way to make things very special. The team really puts in all the extra effort possible to make your stay as comfortable as possible.

The food was phenomenal; from the treats on game drives to the fine dining meals in the restaurant – all to die for. The Head Chefs were charming and they always made extra effort to always say hi and introduce themselves. Every day, before the afternoon game drive, they personally presented the dinner menu and took our orders. As a vegetarian, they made sure there we more than enough option for me to choose from.

The lodge is beautifully appointed, and the rooms are out of this world. We stayed in the last tent and the view over the bush was spectacular! There is something intoxicating and enchanting about listening to the bush “wake”. I will dream of it and long for it, until I return again.

Now to the game drives, we had the most brilliant time and we saw so much! We had some very amazing sightings; spectacular elephant sightings and witnessed some quite intimate animal behavior involving monkeys. Jonathan was our ranger and his hospitality was courteous, caring and diligent; he had a very engaging nature and a great sense of humor. We were pretty much laughing the whole time during our drives because of Jonno. He went out of his way to show us things that would interest us most and pick the spots for sunsets and morning coffee that he knew we would love. We felt in the safest and best of hands with him. He was brilliant.

I hope that we will be fortunate enough to return to Rhino Sands, until then we will hold the memories very dear. Thank you to the entire team for the most wonderful time; it was truly magical in every way.

Unforgettable

There truly are not enough stars. Rhino sands is the perfect combination beauty, luxury and simplicity. Thank you to Nico and his team for our unforgettable experience. The friendliness, kindness and professional nature of the team was exceptional and is a true reflection of Nico’s leadership. From the second we arrived until our departure Obi, Thandeka, Spa and Jean were incredibly warm and attentive and made us feel very special. They went the extra mile everyday to make our experience unique. The head chefs Zanele and Deon kept our bellies full with the most exquisite African style cuisines. The food was simply incredible. As for our ranger Josh, what can I say he is gentleman and a scholar and was like a magnet to all the beauty of the African wild. It was clear from the start that is passion for the bush has no boundaries. Every drive with him was informative, entertaining and exciting, to the extend that we were awake before his 5 am wake up call every morning. The team of rangers on the reserve communicated exceptionally well with each other to give all guests the best possible experience. And who can forget Patric, our ever watchful, ever vigilant night watchman. Who kept our minds at ease by patrolling the camp at night, keeping the perils of the bush off the walkways and out of our tents so that we could all sleep in peace.

Once again, thank you to each and everyone at Rhino Sands. We are looking forward to seeing you all again.

The Best Experience You Could Ask For!

We visited Rhino Sands as part of our honeymoon trip to South Africa. This was our first ever Safari experience and this absolutely did not disappoint.

Lodge – The lodges are expansive and very private, you really feel like you have your own little bubble of heaven in the middle of the bush! The outdoor bathroom was brilliant along with the pool & relaxation areas to relax in between game drives.

Food & Drink – the team surprised us with their attentiveness and the variety of food and drink on offer. They took an interest in getting to know what we wanted to experience & try and tailored the menu accordingly. The team took every opportunity to do something different to make our trip even more special, whether this was the beautiful sunset drinks set up in the bush, private candle lit dinners, camp fire drinks… the list is endless!

Game Drive – Anton is the best!! His knowledge and experience was second to none. He went above and beyond to give us the best Safari experience we could ask for. Again, as newbies to Safari we didn’t know what to expect & how likely animal spottings were or weren’t. We were blown away! We have too many memories to share but the main highlights we’re seeing a herd of over 30 elephants emerge out of the bushes to the watering hole and also seeing 2 cheetah cubs and their mother having dinner & playing together.

Service – As mentioned, the team stopped at nothing to make this experience extra special for us. We felt like nothing was too much for them and they were happy to help us in anyway. Even helping us with recommendations for our onwards travel around South Africa. If I could rate them higher than 5* then I absolutely would! Everyone was so kind and the collaborative working approach made for a wonderful environment for us to be in. The attention to detail does not go unnoticed and made this a trip we will never forget.

Wow. Just. Wow.

It was a privilege to spend time in the care of the staff at Rhino Sands. You know you are about to embark on an extraordinary experience from the moment you arrive. The thoughtful amenities, the considerate staff, exquisitely prepared meals and tented accommodations were exceptional. We felt very well taken care of during our stay.

Our ranger Josh was knowledgeable, and his enthusiasm for wildlife conservation was infectious. We were always eager to head out on our game ride to see what he might help us discover–not only the big five but small creatures too, which added so much to the context and understanding of the Reserve biodiversity. He delivered the most amazing wildlife memories, including our foray around the park to ensure we could have our highly prized hippo sighting. (Thank you!) We are dreaming of the day when we can return.

Best Lodge by Far in KZN!

We were already staying in the reserve trying out the different lodges that we had not visited in the past and were very lucky to get a last-minute booking at Rhino Sands as it was one of the lodges, we had been desperate to visit.  And how glad we were that we did!

The bush is our haven, and so believing we are fairly seasoned and quite fussy guests, as we appreciated and notice every tiny attention to detail, we are delighted to rate Rhino Sands as our most favorite Safari experience yet, not only in KZN but in S.A.

Being in the interior business, the style and choice of finishes and amenities is world class.

The food was out of this world and was prepped minutes before serving so everything was fresh and delicious.

Nothing was too much trouble, and our guide Josh was just delightful. As we were his only guests, and were not chasing to see the big five, we were happy to sit for hours tracking a hunting cheetah and so had very special and unusual sightings on all four drives. His knowledge of both Flora and Fauna is incredible and we learned so much more than we had ever been told on all the many game drives we have been on.

We are already planning our return visit during the year, and can highly recommend this camp, which would be lovely to book out with a group as it accommodates 4 couples in four designer tents. I would highly recommend Tent 2, with its own pool under the shady trees looking at the riverbed, but all 4 are identical and beautifully appointed with swimming pools.

Best known for its breathtaking coastline and sumptuous beach resorts, the province is highly alluring to wildlife enthusiasts too. 1. Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi , the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in South Africa, is KwaZulu-Natal’s most popular wildlife destination. It was established in the 1890s to protect Africa’s last remaining white rhinos from extinction. This has been an overwhelming success and today you’re bound to see these bulky animals here in good numbers. Searching for the Big Five and other safari heavyweights against a scenic backdrop of lush hills and deep valleys makes for an unforgettable experience.

2. iSimangaliso Wetland Park

iSimangaliso, an isiZulu word meaning miraculous, is one of the most diverse conservation areas in Africa. It is no surprise then that it was South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. It incorporates a 220km unspoiled coastline, Africa’s biggest estuary, acacia savannah, sand forest and South Africa’s largest freshwater lake. There is plenty to do here. Take a game drive along the Eastern Shores to Cape Vidal where you can safely leave your vehicle to swim or snorkel. Go for a walk on an empty beach hemmed in by forested dunes or take a boat trip looking for hippos and crocodiles on Lake St Lucia. Not to be missed is a morning or afternoon spent sitting in a hide in uMkhuze Game Reserve where rhino, elephant, giraffe and lots of other animals regularly drink.

3. Phinda Private Game Reserve

Phinda is the most prestigious of private game reserves in the province. Packages are all-inclusive and the guiding is excellent. It offers great close-up sightings of all of the Big Five in open vehicles, but its flagship animal is the cheetah. This is one of the best places to see this gracious cat in action, whether it is grooming, hunting or nursing cubs.

4. Tembe Elephant Park

Tembe Elephant Park was established in 1983 to protect what was then the last free-ranging population of elephants in the country. The herd consisted of about 150 individuals, many of which carrying gigantic tusks. Although these elephants have died over the years, their genes have been passed on. Even today, Tembe is known for its big tuskers. All of the Big Five can be spotted here as well as Zululand specials such as the graceful nyala and the diminutive red duiker. A limited number of day visitors are allowed access, but for a rounded experience an overnight at the community-owned tented camp is highly recommended.

5. Pongola Game Reserve

The little-known Pongola Game Reserve lies on the shore of Pongolapoort Dam. The focus here isn’t on standard game drives. A very exciting morning activity is tracking rhinos on foot. Trudging through the bush, picking up on footprints and other signs is a challenging pastime, but you’ll know it is all worth it when you get the first glimpse of your target. Sneaking up on a blissfully unaware rhino downwind is bound to get your adrenaline pumping. Afternoons are best spent on a leisurely boat cruise. Even then you’re in for a thrill a minute – there are crocs and hippos everywhere, the birdlife is amazing, and you’ll see a few more rhinos and other heavyweights while sipping your sundowner drinks.

6. Zimanga Private Game Reserve

Zimanga offers a unique experience especially suitable to keen wildlife photographers. The main attraction in this Big Five reserve is a collection of sunken hides. The photographic shelters are set up with immaculate precision to get the perfect shot. Each hide focuses on something different. The scavenger hide attracts vultures and the odd black-backed jackal, the lagoon hide gets you eye-level with the water for in-your-face shots of waterbirds. You get a chance to photograph little seed-eating birds such as waxbills and canaries in the bird-bath reflection hide. Most exciting perhaps is the overnight hide where you might come face to face with any of the Big Five as they drink just a few meters away from your lens.

Mavela Game Lodge is an open-plan, two-story thatched welcome area with lounging spots, an upstairs “ help yourself” bar and spacious dining facilities. These all lead out to a generous pool and large wooden veranda looking onto a small watering hole and vast views of the African bushveld.

Our guests can unwind and make themselves at home in one of our seven, luxury safari-style tents. Each luxury tent is tastefully decorated complete with aircon, standing fans and luxurious, eco-friendly Afri-Earth amenities and crisp white linen on either single or king beds. There is an en-suite bathroom and shower plus an intimate outdoor shower that faces the views of the bushveld. Unwind on a large private deck looking out at the beautiful views with comfortable deck chairs and a birdbath in front of each tent, which birding enthusiasts can enjoy ticking off their lifers from the comfort of their veranda. The entire camp is unfenced where guests will be escorted back to their rooms after dinner. At Mavela Game Lodge you’ll feel the intimate safari lodge experience in a unique part of the African bush.

Guest Experiences

We had the most amazing time here at Mavela Game Lodge for a 2 night stay (we wish it could have been for longer). The staff, lodge, food, room and Safari were all incredible. The staff were all so lovely and looked after our every need. They always went above and beyond to ensure our stay was a memorable one. Our guide Jason was super knowledgeable and answered all the questions we had our on our game drives. The main lodge is stunning. From the help yourself bar to the immense views over the reserve, we didn’t want to leave this place. Sitting having a lunchtime beer overlooking the watering hole was a real highlight for us. When the sun came out we sat by the swimming pool which is a lovely option to have as well. The food was delicious. Having a nut allergy and dairy intolerance between us, the chefs always prepared us separate food to ensure we could eat with confidence and this food was exceptional. The best food we ate in South Africa. Our room was very spacious and well decorated. We loved the option of having an outdoor shower in the day overlooking the reserve, as well as having a lovely seating option on our balcony area. The bed was incredibly comfortable, and the room in general has everything you need and more for a super comfortable stay. Lastly the Safari was our highlight. The amount of animals we saw on our four drives was incredible. We loved going to different areas within the reserve and seeing the wide range of animals and birds that live there. We are glad we only managed to see 4 of the big 5 as we definitely have to come back to find our 5th! We couldn’t recommend Mavela more highly, we had the most incredible stay and can’t thank the staff enough for making our time there so special.

Firstly I would like to state that we have stayed in far more expensive lodges and that our experience at Mavela showed us that you don't need to spend a pile of money to get a sensational African experience. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful at all times. The food was fantastic and the variety was great. Views from both the tents and the guest areas are phenomenal and exactly what you need to take in the surroundings and feel part of the game reserve. The tents themselves are large and comfortable and all of the amenities could not be faulted in the slightest. The range of wild animals in the park is right up there with much bigger and pricier game reserves which is a great bonus. Our guide (Jason) was nothing short of fantastic, his knowledge of the animals, their behavior and the area made the drives all that much better. He was always friendly and professional and while I can only speak for our guide, if the others are only half as good this is the place to go!

Could not want for anything. The staff were attentive and everything that you could want was available. food was plentiful and delicious. We had Sitelo on the game drives and he was the most knowledgeable i have ever experienced - and he was amazing with our 5 year old while still being a fantastic guide to all of us. On the drives we got an up close experience with Elephants and Lions…while seeing buffalo, cheetah, jackal and a ton of other animals up close as well.

We had a more than wonderful week stay at the Mavela Game Lodge. The lodge is beautiful settled in Manyoni Private Game Reserve. The main lodge and the seven luxury tents are beautiful designed, tastefully decorated in a modern African style and equipped with every luxury you can wish for. We were threated by all the staff with great hospitality and kindness and enjoyed every meal in the great setting and atmosphere from the main lodge. The game drives with Roland were fantastic, through his experience and super knowledge as ranger we experienced wonderful meetings and sightings with the animals, who are very relaxed and close. That gave us many opportunities to make great pictures such as from the very rare secretary bird, the cheetah’s looking for a hunt, lions, the elephant herd and the very endangered pangolin. Fantastic. Mavela Game Lodge is in every sight a five-star lodge, we had an unforgettable time here.

Struggling to choose between game reserves in KZN?

Welcome to the club.

The province is like a breeding pair of rabbits but with safaris.

Throw a rock in any direction, and you’re almost guaranteed to hit a zebra or a boundary line of a private reserve.

And while having choices is a good thing, it can feel overwhelming when you need to finalise your KZN itinerary.

You need to make a decision. One that ticks all your boxes. Preferably before your lunch break is up.

And that’s where I come in.

I’ve spent over 6-years travelling South Africa , exploring some of the top safari destinations.

Below, you’ll find my ultimate guide for game reserves in KZN that’ll help you figure out who deserves a spot on your itinerary and who is getting the chop.

Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve: A Haven for Endangered Species

Coming in hot is my favourite Big 5 game reserve in KZN, Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve. 

It’s the  oldest game reserve in Africa,  established in 1895.

But that’s not its biggest claim to fame.

Hluhluwe Game Reserve is home to the largest population of white rhinos in the world. Its environmental conservation efforts have played a major role in preventing the extinction of these incredible creatures and growing the worldwide population from 600 in the 1960s to an estimated 18,000 in 2021.

Set against the vibrant rolling green hills, seeing rhinos in such a lush environment is something special.

The best way to experience Hluhluwe-iMfolozi’s 96,000 hectares?

A full-day guided safari tour.

While a self-drive is possible, it’s a massive park. Going with a guide helps you save time and explore both parts of the park.

Aaaaand if you sign up for one of the safari packages, you can experience night drives through the bush!

You have two options inside Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve:

• Hilltop Camp in Hluhluwe:  Perfect for couples and small groups who want self-catering and non-self-catering chalet options with a nearby bar, restaurant, and pool.
• Mpila Camp in Imfolozi:  Stay here for something more rustic and wild. There are self-catering chalets and tents and more space for larger groups.

If you don’t like any of those options, you can always stay elsewhere in the Hluluwe-iMfolozi region or grab a hotel in St Lucia . It’s only 1hr 20minutes away and puts you in the prime spot to explore another incredible game reserve in KZN, iSimangaliso.

• Gate fee levy:  R120.00 (for South Africans) and R240.00 (for internationals).
• Best time to go:  May to September for cooler temperatures, dry weather, and less dense bush.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that spans over 280 km of the KwaZulu-Natal coast. 

The park boasts a unique ecosystem that features wetlands, dunes, and forests, creating a diversity of habitats for over 500 bird species and various mammals, reptiles, and fish species.

It’s a one-stop show for what South Africa does best – diversity.

I’ve been here a few times over the years, and each visit is unique because there is so much to do inside the park.

Here are some of the highlights:

• Pack your snorkelling gear and explore the coral reefs.
• Go on a boat safari and get up close with the local hippo population.
• Time your trip right and book a whale-watching tour.
• Grab a bottle of wine or a G&T and sign up for a sunset game drive.
• Catch a glimpse of nesting sea turtles and hatchlings dashing for the ocean.
• Learn how to scuba dive at Sodwana Bay.

iSimangalisio accommodation:  The park offers budget to luxury options for travellers. Stay in a wooden cabin on the shores of Cape Vidal, bring your own camping gear or opt for the secluded Bhangazi Bush. If you don’t want to stay inside the park, here are some nearby options:

• Monzi Safari Lodge :  A budget, no-frills option on the main street of St Lucia. At affordable rates, you’ll find various accommodation options, from shared dorms to glamping tents.
• Coral Divers :  If you’re heading to iSimangaliso and plan to spend most of your time near Sodwana, stay at Coral Divers. Choose from cheap-as-chips tents or book a private chalet.
• Gate fee levy:  Entry fees vary depending on the gate. The average price is R60.00 for South Africans and R118.00 for internationals.
• Best time to go:  November to May to catch the sea turtles, April to May for the best weather, and June to October for whale season and safaris.
• Vehicle:  2×4 is possible for the park’s main areas, but you’ll need a 4×4 to access parts like Kosi Bay.

Tembe Elephant Park: A Sanctuary for Africa’s Largest Elephants

Want to get up close and personal with elephants? Plan a trip to Thebe Elephant Park . It’s one of the top Big 5 game reserves in KZN. It has over 200 elephants, including some of the largest in Africa.

Located in Maputaland, the area is the ancestral home of the Tembe tribe, who own and co-manage the park.

The area is rich in biodiversity and is an incredible safari destination. If the safari gods are on your side, you might catch a glimpse of lions, leopards, hyenas, buffalo, and more!

Tembe offers guided game drives and an outdoor spa treatment area in the middle of the African bush. Book an Elephant Coast safari and stay on a Shayamanzi House Boat if you want to extend your trip!

Tembe Elephant Park offers guests incredible safari packages. For R2200.00 per night, you can stay in one of the tented suites, score two game drives per day, and all your meals are included.

The prices drop to R1800.00 if you’d prefer the self-drive option.

Suppose you don’t want to stay inside Tembe Elephant Park. In that case, there are other nearby lodges like Royal Thonga Safari Lodge and Shemula Lodge.

• Gate fee levy:  There is an R110.00 gate fee plus an R70.00 conservation fee for South Africans and R140.00 for international visitors.
• Best time to go:  June to August are the cool winter months. With less vegetation, you’ll have an easier time spotting the wildlife.
• Vehicle:  You’ll need a 4×4 for self-driving in the park. If you arrive in a 2×4, you’ll park your car at the conference centre and grab a shuttle to the lodge.

The closest game reserve to Durban is Tala Private Game Reserve. It’s 45 minutes to an hour’s drive away from the city.

The best time to visit game reserves in Kwa-Zulu Natal depends on what you want to see. The drier months (May to September) are excellent for big game viewings. But if you’re interested in birding, October to March are the best months to see a large variety of bird life.

KZN boasts a variety of wildlife. The most common animal species you can expect to see are lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants, rhinos, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, hippos, and monkeys.

It depends on the reserve you’re visiting. Some are easily navigated with a sedan or SUV, whereas others will require a 4×4 vehicle.

Hluhluwe – iMfolozi Game Reserve provides an exceptional wildlife viewing experience to the visitors. This park is a habitat for the Big Five, especially the rhino species. The thick foliage of this reserve makes the spotting of the wildlife a little difficult. Wild dogs are often seen wandering around the reserve.

Sightings of the Big Five, white and black rhinos, buffalos, big cats, and elephants can be spotted. Other common species found are giraffes and zebras roaming throughout the park.

Each Chalet has its own entrance and is equipped with telephone, air conditioning, fan and mini-bar. Luxurious en-suite facilities offer a bath, toilet, secluded outside shower and plunge pool. Luxury Safari Suite

This suite has a small but comfortable and well-equipped kitchen and, of course, all the features of the other chalets like fans, air-conditioning and en-suite facilities. Phinda Forest Lodge: Set deep in the heart of a rare and beautiful dry sand forest, Phinda’s Forest Lodge is a mass of exquisite contradiction. Floating on stilts above the forest floor while tiny duiker graze below, 16 Zulu Zen suites blend into the dappled shade.

Phinda Mountain Lodge: Wraparound views of the ancient Ubombo Mountain range, this one of Phinda’s lodge’s balances majestically above its beautiful surroundings. The 25 suites scattered along the mountainside offer complete privacy and luxury.

Phinda Rock Lodge: Carved into the rocky mountainside facing spectacular Leopard Rock, Phinda’s Rock Lodge offers complete seclusion, suspended in air over the deep valley below. Phinda Vlei Lodge: At the edge of the Reserve’s unique wetland or vlei system at the edge of the sand forest, Phinda’s Vlei Lodge offers an intimate safari experience, with elegant and gracious spaces designed for quiet contemplation of the African wilderness. The six elegant thatched suites look out onto an ever-changing parade of animals on the open vlei.

Phinda Zuka Lodge: Cradled in a valley and surrounded by densely wooded hills studded with aloes, sole-use Zuka Lodge embodies cool, coastal bush style. Four thatched en-suite cottages cluster around a central guest area with an open, interactive kitchen, a large wooden dining table for friends and family, and a cosy fireplace for evening gatherings.

The Homestead: In this exclusive private safari villa, the beauty of Africa’s wide open spaces is brought right indoors. Large sliding doors in four luxurious suites let in breathtaking vistas. Personal touches and the warmth of a dedicated team of staff, including a private ranger, tracker, butler and chef, bring renowned African hospitality to life.

Phinda is home to an abundance of wildlife, from the largest mammals to the smallest antelope. However, it is the faster of predators that has a special place here. Having reintroduced cheetah to the area after an absence of over 50 years, Phinda has quickly established a reputation as one of the best places to view and photograph these rare cats. Along with cheetah, lion and leopard are tracked on the reserve on a daily basis and guests have a high likelihood of encountering these magnificent animals.

Another success story at Phinda is that of both the white and the more endangered black rhino. Brought back from the brink of extinction, both the grass-eating white rhino and the shrub-grazing black rhino are thriving at Phinda.

The elegant nyala antelope is a frequent sight, with the Reserve boasting one of the highest densities of the species. With its dark brown coat, yellow legs, shaggy mane and bushy tail, the male nyala is particularly spectacular, while the female contents itself with a less flashy chestnut coat. The rare sand forest in the northern parts of Phinda is the perfect environment for some of the rarer smaller species. The shy red duiker is found grazing on fallen leaves and fruit and the tiny suni, one of the smallest antelope species, may also be seen.

The Phinda Private Game Reserve is one of the best examples of its kind in Africa – a place where dreams come true.

Would highly recommend. Safari online asked questions when booking and were efficient and knew exactly what we were looking for in terms of accommodation and animals were wanted to see. We have been to Africa for 24 of the last 27 years so know a bit about what is involved. Walter has arranged the details for the last couple of years, and has done a superb job. He is always quick to respond and comes up with answers immediately……..no evasive tactics, always head-on!

Our mom grew up in Central and South Africa so we had visited the continent many times. My sister and I wanted to take our teens and husbands to Africa to experience the magic. We had a limited budget but big and specific expectations and by some miracle Walter was able to manage both.

Our 28-day itinerary took us to South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Botswana. A magnificent and unforgettable adventure. Everything ran smoothly and efficiently from the flights, transfers, rides, connections, etc. Absolutely wonderful! Can’t thank them enough!

The Zulu Kingdom, Natal, The Last British Outpost, KwaZulu Natal. The names the province has been known as over the years, are as diverse as it's landscapes and it's character. It's main Tourist attractions for many years were of course the beaches of Durban and the South Coast but KwaZulu Natal is blessed with an incredibly diverse landscape which includes the magnificent ranges and peaks of the Drakensberg mountains further inland Oribi Gorge to the South and the wetlands in the north to name just a few.

More recently KZN has nurtured a growing game lodge population in it's northern areas as well as just a stones throw from the Drakensberg mountains, the relatively new Nambiti Private Game reserve. The province also boasts Battlefields lodges and in case that wasn't enough choice, there are some very good Dive Lodges up and down the coast.

Nothing was too much trouble - they even baked a little cake and sang happy birthday to my dad. The food was exceptional, and the service, top notch. Our daily game drives were mesmerising, made all the more enjoyable by the fabulous Theo! When does he sleep ? That's what I want to know. Anytime you need anything, Theo is there. He is kind, funny, and has a wealth of knowledge on all species, flora, and fauna. You can not go wrong with a trip to Zulu Rock Lodge - 5 star treatment all the way. Man, what an experience!

Offering a furnished deck, each of the free-standing suites at Lions Valley Lodge has a bedroom with a walk-in cupboard and a spacious lounge area. The open-plan bathrooms feature 2 baths, an indoor and an outdoor shower. gorgeous location, beautiful cottages and set up, clean and comfortable and the staff were phenomenal. We felt like honored family. In addition, the food was all fantastic, especially the home made chocolate rusk!

Tugela River Lodge

Set on the banks of the Tugela River, 22 km north of Winterton, Tugela River Lodge features self-catering accommodation 13 km from Spioenkop Nature Reserve and 22 km from Winterton Museum. The pet-friendly lodge offers a barbecue. Great for dog. Beautiful view. Kayaking was relaxing. Walk along river was pleasant.

Umzolozolo Private Safari Lodge & Spa 5 stars

Perched on top of a hill, Umzolozolo Private Safari Lodge is situated in the malaria-free Nambiti Big 5 Private Game Reserve. It boasts a rim flow pool overlooking a valley. Guests can go on guided game drives in open game viewing vehicles. For relaxation, Umzolozolo Private Safari Lodge also has a spa centre and offers massage treatments. Probably one of the best lodges I have stayed in - they really stand out in terms of hospitality and facilities. Staff is just so good, they always call you by name, personalise your whole experience. Spa experience was also very good, game drives were informative and we saw plenty of game including 4 out of big fives. It felt we were living in a movie. Just book it, it's worth it!

Nambiti Plains 5 stars

Nambiti Plains offers accommodation within the malaria-free Nambiti Big 5 Game Reserve. It boasts accommodation with panoramic views of the open plains. The swimming pool is often visited by elephants, and guests can enjoy game drives and walking safaris . Nambiti Plains is outstanding. It's luxurious but relaxed and comfortable at the same time. The rooms are exquisite and attention to detail is superb from the moment you arrive. Excellent food and service. The staff are so friendly and helpful. Our game guide, JP, was great. He is extremely experienced and knowledgeable and made our drives fun and interesting. We loved every minute of our stay and would definitely stay again. Thank you everyone at Nambiti Plains! We were celebrating an engagement and the staff went out of their way to make it a special occasion. Nambiti Game reserve itself has excellent game and an interesting and varied terrain. This was the right lodge for us!

Located 27 km from Ladysmith, Cheetah Ridge Lodge is situated within the Big 5 Nambiti Private Game Reserve, which boasts the Big 5 with a variety of other species and amazing birdlife. This property features a garden and a pool. We were met by two very enthusiastic guides, Lesley and Ryan, who escorted us during our whole stay. They were extremely knowledgable, helpful and had a wonderful sense of humour. The room was fantastic; we could see wildlife from our veranda. During the drive, we always stopped for hot chocolate or other drinks. When we arrived back to our chalet, the staff had already made the fire, which was welcome in the wintery days. The food was top quality in terms of quantity and variation, and the staff were excellent. We saw almost all the animals during our stay and the only one we missed, some friends saw the following day. It is certainly well value for money. If you are driving from the south then it is well worth considering rather than driving up to Kruger if you don't have the time.

This is my third stay at Nambiti and my second visit to Springbok Lodge. I rate Nambiti as one of the best safari's South Africa has to offer. It's a much shorter drive than Kruger and the setting and game are wonderful. I loved everything about Sprinkbok Lodge, from the food to the luxury tent. I'll definitely be back!

Really amazing nature lodge with zebras around and directly at the lake. There is everything you could wish for and the owners are just lovely and helped us organizing our Sani Pass Trip and everything else. Really great and we would love to be back

Wonderful location in the middle of a community game reserve. It is great how this reserve is truly taken care of by the local community. The lodges on the hill are wonderful. Great views. Two nice pools with relaxing. A fire place to make a fire yourself under the amazing stars. Because of the possibilities of self-catering this lodge makes it possible to have an affordable safari experience. We had a great private game drive and drove around ourselves with rare wild dogs sightings. In other words, truly worth the effort to visit!
