Summary [ ]
A gentle and talented boy named Michael played beautiful music on his oboe, and his greatest love was to play for and tend to the flowers in the greenhouse at the school of music where he attended. Unfortunately, his gardening made him constantly late for orchestra practice and resulted in his dismissal from the school. When Michael fell asleep that same night, he was awakened by a dainty Flower Fairy named Florence , who would take him on an enchanted journey to a land where flowers came alive, treble notes were mischievous, and adventure beckoned. There, he would soon come to realize that his love of flowers and desire to become a great musician could go hand-in-hand and help him to become focused in life and discover himself.

Rock and Rule by way of Fantasia . Epic battles, burning passion, and tasteful orchestral arrangements.
A beautiful Art Nouveau journey with hints of The Little Prince , but with more tentacles. A Journey Through Fairyland reminded me of P. Craig Russell's graphic novel adaptations of classic operas, in both its gorgeous design and emotional core.
From Sanrio, the studio who brought us Hello Kitty. I enjoyed this film so much that it didn't even throw me off when the cute little cat herself made a cameo.
Edit: I just noticed this shares a director with Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland (1989), a troubled production and underrated gem based on one of my favorite comic strips.

I used to LOVE this movie when I was a kid. I actually still love it. This movie made me gay. If you don't wanna be gay (which, by the way, is the best thing for the environment) then don't watch this movie, but you'd be doing a disservice to yourself and the planet.

Just casually one of the more dreamlike, artful, musical, soft, and serene animations I’ve seen. Like others, I quickly thought “Fantasia.” It’s very much that with a (kinda) more concrete storyline and without the stressors; any scene presenting an “obstacle” probably takes place within sunset colored clouds or a storm toned abyss full of dancing fairies and blossoming flowers. Slow moving, but an easy, pretty watch.

sweet little fairytale about flower fairies that dance at night & disappear in the morning dew. hata has some of the most adorable character design here coupled with very fluid animation that’s just a joy to witness. so many beautiful sequences to note, but i really enjoyed the dancing little moth fairies. many scenes are accompanied by renditions of famous classical music, that i feel can be a great introduction for young children to learn from. many positive messages for children, esp boys to embrace their unconventional desires (shown here by the joy of caring for flowers & gardening) and also celebrates being sensitive & loving / respectful towards nature. so cute ! also love the mandatory musical sequence of popular sanrio characters, which is also done in his other film, the sea prince & the fire child .

often called a Fantasia clone, and i can see why, as the movie is mostly guided by a series of fanciful animated sequences of flowers dancing set to classical music. there is a bit of a through line with the plot here though, and simple as it is, it's enough. where the movie really shines is in its artistic qualities, furthering Sanrio Films' stylistic tendency toward an early Walt Disney influence (ringing bell, the sea prince and the fire child, etc) and firing on all cylinders in this aspect; what a long way they had come since Winds of Change!! it makes it all the sadder that they had to die off so shortly after. while it's not necessarily the…

Musical tale with great animation and a rather pretty flowers visual theme. Music pieces are good and well accorded to scenes. Insipid story who doesn't damage the movie.

A Journey Through Fairyland (a.k.a. Yousei Furorensu or Fairy Florence 妖精フローレンス) is a 90-minute 1985 South Korean/Japanese/American animated film by Sanrio (also known for the film Ringing Bell ).
The story follows a teen or college-aged boy named Michael, who lives at a music institute where he plays the oboe in the school band. However, his greatest love is tending to the flowers in the greenhouse at the school , causing him to neglect his music practice and constantly arrive late and mess up in class. One afternoon, Michael finds a begonia, barely alive and in a broken pot, and takes it to the greenhouse. The following night, after nursing it back to health, Michael is greeted by a tiny fairy named Florence, who explains she has come to thank him for his care of all the plants and flowers. Since dawn is breaking however, she must go for now, but promises to come back. The next morning, Michael is late again, and while trying his best to sneak in unnoticed, interrupts the rehearsal by knocking over a bunch of instruments and making a mess. The professor is fed up and expels Michael from the school. That night, as Michael says goodbye to his beloved flowers in the greenhouse, Florence calls to him, revealing a special wand that will allow him to travel to her home, Flower Land. A musical , sometimes strange, and vivid journey begins.
This movie includes the following tropes:
- Bittersweet Ending : Florence loses her means to go back to Flower Land and can't survive in the human world, so she dissolves into morning dew. But Michael heeds her Last Request , convinces his music professor to give him a second chance and becomes a great musician.
- Company Cross References : Since this was made by Sanrio Animation, midway through the movie popular Sanrio Characters (mainly Hello Kitty, My Melody, the Little Twin Stars, and Tuxedo Sam) show up near the end of the movie.
- The Cameo : Hello Kitty , My Melody, the Little Twin Stars, and Tuxedo Sam are among the Sanrio characters to make an appearance in one scene. Hello Kitty even gets rid of insects by blowing bubbles that trap them in pairs and then pop.
- Flight : The fairies do not have wings and instead just float around to fly.
- Ironic Allergy : Despite having a Green Thumb and loves taking care of plants and flowers, Michael is allergic to them. His sneezes as a result of working in the nearby greenhouse are one of the things that cause problems during his music classes.
- "I Am" Song : "My Name is Florence" essentially the only song that is not a classical tune in this film.
- Our Fairies Are Different : Florence and her fairy pals in Flower Land are your stereotypical pretty, sweet-natured little people. Interestingly, they do not have wings and instead just float around like ghosts.
