How do I arrange a tour of the United States Capitol Building?
Plan your visit in advance! A public tour of the U.S. Capitol is free and open to anyone who makes an advanced reservation, although there are some same-day tickets available by standing in line at the U.S. Capitol Visitors Center (note that lines will be long during spring and summer). We recommend reserving a reserving a tour date and time .
All tours begin and end at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, open Monday-Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s Day and Inauguration Day). Tours typically take about 90 minutes and are fully accessible for people with disabilities.
What will I see on a Capitol tour?
Guided tours begin with a 13-minute intro film, followed stops in the Capitol Rotunda, where guides point out the center point of the District of Columbia, as well as demonstrate the unique acoustical effect where a speaker several yards away can be heard more clearly than a speaker close to the listener. The Capitol Dome is encircled by murals, and the fresco on the eye of the ceiling is called The Apotheosis of Washington showing President Washington rising to the heavens in glory with Liberty and Victory/Fame beside him. Below, on the walls of the Rotunda, are large paintings depicting significant events in American history: The Signing of the Declaration of Independence, The Baptism of Pocohontas, The Embarkation of the Pilgrims, The Landing of Columbus and General George Washington Resigning His Commission. Other stops on the 45-minute walking tour include the Crypt, National Statuary Hall and connecting corridors of the U.S. Capitol, where you’ll see statues representing every state.
Can I see Congress in session?
The guided tour doesn't include the Senate and House galleries. However, visitors can obtain free passes through their congressmen to view both chambers when Congress is in session. International visitors can ask about gallery passes at the House and Senate Appointment Desks on the upper level of the Capitol Visitor Center. When Congress is not in session, the galleries are open to the public Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. However, viewing hours are subject to change and are not always the same for the House and Senate galleries. You can check the schedules with your Congressional office when requesting gallery passes. Read more information about watching Congress in session and viewing the House and Senate galleries.

The Cynical Hypocrisy Behind Trump’s Visit to an NYPD Officer’s Wake
- Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below
Donald Trump attended the wake of fallen NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller on Thursday, telling the crowd of media outside afterward, “Police are the greatest people.”
Anyone who thinks Trump truly believes that or that he was at the wake out of genuine respect should recall a campaign rally in Ohio earlier this month.
At the start of that March 16 event in Vandalia, Trump solemnly saluted as the sound system played a recording of the J6 Prison Choir singing the national anthem inside the District of Columbia jail.
The producers who had spliced in a recording of Trump reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and marketed the song as “Justice for All” have never identified the particular singers. But an analysis by Just Security found that 17 of the 20 Jan. 6 prisoners in the facility around the time of the recording had been arrested for assaulting law enforcement officers.
Among them was Peter Stager , who is serving four years for beating D.C. Police Officer Blake Miller as he lay head-first, face-down on the Capitol steps. Video captured Stager striking the defenseless cop at least three times with a flagpole that had an American flag attached.
Court papers show that Stager subsequently stood over and cursed another officer who had been dragged into the crowd. “Every single one of those Capitol law enforcement officers, death is the remedy,” Stager was recorded saying during the riot. “That is the only remedy they get.”
This recording on Jan. 6 was part of the evidence against Stager when he was held in the D.C. Jail where the J6 Prison choir recording was made over a cellblock phone. Trump first played “Justice for All” at a March 25, 2023, rally in Waco, Texas that marked the start of his campaign for re-election.
“Our people love those people,” Trump told the crowd.
Trump supporters stand on a U.S. Capitol Police armored vehicle on Jan. 6, 2021.
Trump has played it repeatedly since then, evolving from standing with his hand over his heart to giving a hand salute this month.
“And you see the spirit from the hostages, and that’s what they are as hostages,” Trump told the crowd in Ohio. “They've been treated terribly and very unfairly, you know that everybody knows that. And we're going to be working on that.” He called the prisoners “unbelievable patriots” and termed their incarceration “a disgrace.”
“My first acts as your next President will be to Close the Border, DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and Free the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!” he declared in a March 12 posting on Truth Social.
As tallied by the U.S. Department of Justice, those arrested in connection with the Jan. 6 riot included “approximately 127 individuals who have been charged with using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer.”
Thirteen days after Trump made his latest pledge to free the “hostages,” 31-year-old Officer Diller was fatally shot in the stomach under his bullet-resistant vest after he approached an illegally parked car in Far Rockaway, Queens. He leaves behind a wife and a 1-year-old child.
“Our heartfelt prayers go out to the family of highly decorated NYPD officer Jonathan Diller, whose life was taken by a murderous career criminal yesterday during a traffic stop in Queens,” Trump said in a statement.
He followed that with a Truth Social post on Wednesday.
“To Officer Diller’s family, and all of the other brave men and women of law enforcement who put your lives on the line every day, we love you, we appreciate you, and we will always stand with you!”
Trump was apparently counting on everybody forgetting the 140 officers the DOJ says were assaulted at the Capitol by people he calls “patriots” and “hostages.” He used a very different word to describe 34-year-old Guy Rivera, a career criminal arrested in connection with the officer’s killing, calling him a “thug” and saying that he should never have been released from lockup.
Trump was saying exactly what Diller’s grieving comrades would want to hear—sentiments that have led many law-enforcement officers in New York and elsewhere to imagine he has their interests at heart, even though he has proven with his actions that he does not.
Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt subsequently announced that the ex-president, who fancies himself a champion of law and order even though he has been indicted four times, would be attending Diller’s wake on Long Island on Thursday.
“President Trump is moved by the invitation to join NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller’s family and colleagues as they deal with his senseless and tragic death,” Leavitt said.
Leavitt did not say who had invited Trump, and the campaign did not respond to a query from The Daily Beast. A spokesman for the Police Benevolent Association of the City of New York said he did not know who had asked Trump to attend. It turns out that Trump was invited by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman, a Republican.
It should be noted that President Joe Biden was also expected in New York on Thursday, to attend a big fundraiser at Radio City Music Hall with former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton . There are no reports that Biden was invited to attend Diller’s wake, which says something about what most New York cops and their families feel about him.
New Yorkers pay their respects at a memorial for slain NYPD officer Jonathan Diller outside the 101st Precinct.
If Trump’s attendance was not just a political stunt with the bonus of contrasting him with Biden, he could have just arrived at the Massapequa Funeral Home without making a public announcement beforehand. He could have said a prayer at the coffin and offered his condolences to the widow, Stephanie.
But Trump’s campaign alerted the media it so often disparages. He thirsts for the headlines—whether they are about him praising cop-beaters or honoring an officer killed in the line of duty.
Trump arrived at the wake at 2 p.m., escorted by Blakeman and greeted by NYPD Commissioner Edward Caban. After 30 minutes with Diller’s family, friends and fellow officers, he emerged and paused outside to speak to reporters.
He almost sounded like he is capable of empathy as he spoke of Diller’s “very beautiful wife” and son.“
“That child—brand new, beautiful baby—sitting there innocent as can be doesn't know how his life has been changed,” Trump said. “But the Diller family will. You’ll never be the same.”
He said what needed to be said, but the words should ring hollow to anyone who knows what he has also said about the insurrectionists who battered Diller’s comrades on Jan. 6.
There is no need to pay attention to anything Trump said. Focus instead on the words Diller’s brother-in-inlaw, Joseph McCauley, spoke at a candlelight vigil the night before.
“He loved what he did. He was born to be a cop. He was born to be a hero. He died being a hero. He died doing what he loved.”
McCauley then said of Diller something that we should be able to say about those we elevate to our highest office: “I will forever be a better person because of him.”

Missouri Sen. Eric Schmitt at the Capitol: State and federal budget questions
by Kermit Miller Regan Mertz
On the day the Missouri House took up the state budget for floor debate, Missouri Senator Eric Schmitt returned to Missouri to visit the Capitol after seeing one of his amendments to the federal budget go up in flames.
The House this week will sign off on and send to the State Senate a $51 billion budget for the spending year that begins July 1. The plan is about $2 billion less than what Gov. Mike Parson had proposed, with most of the trimming coming from federal funds.
Schmitt last week was a no vote on the $1.2 trillion plan in Washington to fund defense, homeland security and other functions of government through the end of September.
While simultaneously focused on the Supreme Court's hearing of the appeal of his lawsuit against the Biden White House over social media controls and influence, Schmitt and Iowa House Republican Joni Ernst pushed an unsuccessful amendment to bar the use of any federal funds to label speech as "disinformation" or to coerce online platforms to alter, remove, restrict or suppress speech.
Schmitt does not see it as necessary to include legislative controls on fake election year websites or social media messages sourced by the Russians or the Chinese.

Late Capitol Police Officer's Family Slams Trump Attending NYPD Wake
T he family of a police officer who died following the January 6 Capitol riots has blasted former President Donald Trump for attending another officer's wake in New York this week.
New York Police Department officer Jonathan Diller, 31, was killed in the line of duty on Monday, March 25, after being shot during a traffic stop in Queens. The family of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who died after suffering two strokes following a confrontation with rioters during the insurrection in 2021, has accused Trump of using the visit to boost his presidential campaign.
Trump attended Diller's wake on Thursday in Massapequa, Long Island, while his political opponent President Joe Biden was in New York at a pre-planned campaign fundraiser event hosted by former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton . Newsweek has contacted Trump's campaign by email for comment outside normal working hours.
According to a report by The Associated Press, while attending the event Trump said Diller's death is "such a sad, sad event, such a horrible thing." He continued: "The police are the greatest people we have. There's nothing and there's nobody like them. And this should never happen."
In an interview with the New York Daily News , Brian's father Charles Sicknick said: "He makes sure he gets his face out there. The guy's a criminal. He's the reason my son is dead— because of the riot at the Capitol. He's a publicity hound. Trump does whatever will get him votes and helps Donald Trump. There's nothing good about this man."
Brian's brother Kenneth Sicknick said: "The fact that he states he's law and order but he sent a mob that ultimately ended up killing my brother. He has such a lack of self-awareness of what he does. He's using that officer's death as a campaign platform."
During his visit, Trump met with Diller's family, including his wife and one-year-old son, according to The Associated Press. Speaking to reporters outside the event, he said: "We have to get back to law and order. We have to do a lot of things differently. This is not working. This is happening too often." The former president then returned to his motorcade.
In a post on X, formerly Twitter , Trump's campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung confirmed Trump's visit and used the opportunity to take aim at the Democrats . "President Trump will be honoring the legacy of Officer Diller and paying respects to his family, friends, and the NYPD . Meanwhile, the Three Stooges—Biden, Obama, and Clinton — will be at a glitzy fundraiser in the city with their elitist, out-of-touch celebrity benefactors," he wrote.
Following the wake, Trump posted a photo of himself with other attendees on Truth Social , writing: "It was my great honor to be with each and every one of you yesterday."

VP Harris returning to Charlotte for fourth visit to NC this year
North carolina is expected to be a battleground state in the 2024 presidential election..
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Vice President Kamala Harris will make another trip to Charlotte this week, less than 10 days after attending a campaign event in Raleigh.
Harris’ upcoming visit will happen on Thursday as she discusses investments in climate action, environmental justice, and increasing access to capital throughout the country including in underserved communities.
This week will mark her fourth trip to North Carolina this year and her 12th since being sworn in. She came to Charlotte in January and announced funding to help mental health professionals in schools and discussed efforts to curb gun violence.
North Carolina is expected to be a battleground state in the 2024 presidential election, which in all likelihood will pit President Joe Biden against former President Donald Trump.
In a Marist poll last month, Trump held a slight advantage over Biden, with 51% of people who said they definitely plan to vote backing Trump, compared to 48% for Biden. One percent said they are undecided.

Several Trump supporters involved in Jan. 6 are running for office this year
WASHINGTON — Former President Donald Trump has promised to pardon many of his supporters convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol if he’s elected in November.
Further down the ballot in the 2024 elections, several convicted rioters and others who were involved in the lead-up to the Capitol attack are running for local and national office themselves.
This fall will also see a candidate who was on the other side of the clash on Jan. 6, 2021. Former Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn, who faced down a crowd of rioters, is running to replace retiring Democratic Rep. John Sarbanes of Maryland. The primary in that race is on May 14.
NBC News has identified seven candidates who are running for elected office this year who were at the Capitol on Jan. 6 or attended the Trump “Stop the Steal” rally that preceded it, plus three more who ran but have already lost in primaries. Only one candidate — Derrick Evans of West Virginia — returned NBC News’ request for comment for this story.
Kimberly Dragoo, Missouri
Kimberly Dragoo, who pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in connection with the Jan. 6 attack, is running for a seat on the St. Joseph Board of Education in Missouri.
Dragoo participated in the riot with her husband, Steven, who photographed the couple throughout the day, including when she went through a broken window into the Capitol, according to court documents. She is one of 10 candidates running for three open seats for a board that oversees 10,000 students and 1,500 staff members, per the district’s website. The election will occur on April 2.
Michele Morrow, North Carolina
Michele Morrow won the Republican primary for North Carolina Superintendent of Public Education and will face democrat Mo Green in November.
Morrow has said publicly that she attended the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6 but that she did not enter the Capitol building. Morrow spoke to a local news station about her experience shortly after Jan. 6, saying that she “was up there” and “around the Capitol” and tried to discourage others from committing violence. She said she was “telling everyone we cannot expect our lawmakers to uphold the law if we’re going to break the law.” She has not been charged in connection with Jan. 6.
Morrow has recently gained national prominence for past social media posts in which she called for violence against prominent Democrats, including calls for the execution of President Joe Biden and then-President Barack Obama, which were first reported by CNN . In a video posted on X , she responded to the reporting of her posts saying they were “old comments taken out of context, made in jest, or never made in the first place.” She accused the media of reporting on the statements to “hide the radicalism of the Democrat platform.”
If elected, Morrow would oversee the nearly 3,000 public schools in North Carolina, attended by 1.4 million children. Morrow has no elected experience, has said that she homeschools her children and has described public schooling as “indoctrination” in social media posts.
Jason Riddle, New Hampshire
Jason Riddle ple a d ed guilty to entering the Capitol and theft of government property and was sentenced to 90 days in prison. Now, he is running for Congress in New Hampshire’s Second District. He admitted to chugging a bottle of wine inside the building and provided a photo of himself holding the bottle to media outlets, per government filings.
This is his second run for Congress. He also ran in 2022, but his candidacy was complicated by the fact that he was incarcerated at the time . He also initially expressed confusion about what office he was running for. In an interview with NBC Boston , Riddle said that he planned to challenge Democratic Rep. Annie Kuster but he “thought Ann was a state representative.” When told that she was a member of Congress, he replied: “Oh, well, I guess I have to run for that then.”
Kuster recently announced her retirement , vacating her seat in the Concord-based swing district.
In a survey about his policy positions for the website Ballotpedia, Riddle described himself as a “recently released January 6th political prisoner” and lists Jesus as his only endorsement. The filing deadline for New Hampshire is in June and he is one of several Republicans seeking to run in the GOP primary, which is set for Sept. 10.
Anthony Kern, Arizona
Anthony Kern is a current member of the Arizona Senate who signed a document falsely “certifying” the Arizona election for Trump as a fake elector . Kern attended the “Stop the Steal” rally and was outside the Capitol while rioters entered it; multiple news outlets identified him in video of the day posted online . Kern tweeted on Jan. 6 that he was in Washington for “D-Day,” using the hashtag #StopTheSteal. He later condemned the violence. He has not been charged in relation to the attack and there is no evidence that he entered the Capitol.
Kern had an ethics complaint filed against him for allegedly using campaign funds for his travel expenses to attend the Jan. 6 rally, but he has not responded to requests for a reply, the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office said. He is currently the subject of a state criminal investigation for his role as a fake elector. He has denied all wrongdoing.
Kern is running for Congress in Arizona’s 8th District, where he faces several opponents in the race to replace retiring Republican Debbie Lesko. His opponents include Blake Masters, the Republican candidate for Senate in Arizona in 2022, and Abe Hamadeh, the Republican candidate for Arizona Attorney General in 2022. (Hamadeh has filed three legal challenges to his loss in the election , all of which are still pending.)
The district, which covers the northwest Phoenix suburbs, is considered solidly Republican, with Trump having won it in 2020 by 13 points .
Jacob Chansley, Arizona
Jacob Chansley, better known as the “QAnon Shaman,” has indicated that he’s running for the same seat as Kern, but as a libertarian.
Chansley was sentenced to 41 months in prison for felony obstruction of a proceeding. He is notorious for his unusual attire, having worn a furry horned headdress on Jan. 6.
He filed a statement of interest to run for Congress in November. Chansley does not appear to have a campaign website, has not filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission and is not listed as a candidate on the Arizona Libertarian Party’s website. He, like the other candidates, did not respond to NBC News’ request for comment.
Derrick Evans, West Virginia
Derrick Evans, a former West Virginia state lawmaker, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to three months in prison on a felony charge for his role on Jan. 6. Now, he is running for Congress in the state’s 1st District. He will face incumbent Republican Carol Miller in a May 14 primary.
Evans, who had been sworn into office just weeks before the Jan. 6 attack, livestreamed his activities that day on Facebook, including him yelling, “Derrick Evans is in the Capitol!”
When reached for comment this week about how his connection to the riot was affecting his candidacy, Evans said in a statement that he believes there was an effort to steal the 2020 election from Trump.
Katrina Pierson, Texas
Pierson is headed to a runoff in her bid for Texas’ 33rd state House District. Pierson, a former Trump spokesperson, helped organize the rally at the Ellipse and served as a liaison between organizers and the White House, including sharing Trump’s plan to call on his supporters to march to the Capitol, according to the House Jan. 6 Committee’s report . There is no evidence that Pierson went near the Capitol or into the building and she has not been charged with any crimes.
Pierson faces incumbent state Rep. Justin Holland, also a Republican, in a May 28 runoff. She was endorsed in the race by Gov. Greg Abbot and Attorney General Ken Paxton, who is targeting state House members who voted to impeach him, including Holland.
Candidates who lost
Several candidates involved in Jan. 6 have already lost their bids for office this cycle.
Ryan Zink, who was convicted of a felony and two misdemeanors for his role in the riot, lost his primary challenge to Rep. Jodey Arrington in Texas’ 19th Congressional District. He filmed himself breaching the Capitol in footage cited by prosecutors, saying, “We’re storming the Capitol! You can’t stop us!” He received about 3% of the vote.
Phillip Sean Grillo, who was convicted of five charges, including one felony for his actions that day, lost the race to be the Republican candidate in the special election to replace George Santos in New York’s 3rd District. He testified at his trial that he had “no idea” Congress met at the Capitol.
Bianca Gracia lost her bid to represent Texas’ 128th state House District. According to the Jan. 6 committee report , Gracia helped organize a pro-Trump rally in Washington on Jan. 5 and had close ties to the extremist Proud Boys group, even meeting with leaders of that group and of the Oath Keepers on the night before the riot. Gracia gave testimony to the House Jan. 6 committee but largely invoked her Fifth Amendment rights in declining to answer questions. She has not been charged with any crimes and does not appear to have been at or near the Capitol on Jan. 6.
Gracia was endorsed by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton but that wasn’t enough to help her defeat ultra-conservative Texas house member Briscoe Cain, who assisted the Trump legal team in its election results challenges in 2020.
