The Daily Lowdown: Is Adele set for a UK return?

Hello's daily lowdown has all the best celebrity news….

lowdown 6 march

Welcome to your Daily Lowdown podcast from HELLO! . Today, we're discussing the Live Aid-style concert that could be set to feature big names including Adele, U2 and more.

Not only that, Miley Cyrus is making a Disney homecoming and Lana Del Rey is not happy about Glastonbury festival. Take a listen to today's episode below...

A Live-Aid style benefit concert is in the works to go ahead in June to raise money for victims of the Ukraine and Russia conflict. The gig is thought to be in production, with many huge acts like Adele , U2, The Rolling Stones and more being invited to perform.

There's no word yet on finer details of a confirmed line-up, but it's been reported that the concert will go ahead at Wembley stadium on the 24 June to raise awareness and funds for those suffering during the ongoing war. The benefit concert will be in the style of Bob Geldof's iconic Live Aid concert which took place at the old Wembley stadium in 1985. The gig raised over 127 million for famine relief in Africa and is considered one of the most iconic concerts in history.

After plenty of rumours online, Miley Cyrus has confirmed she will be making her Disney homecoming for a TV special to celebrate her highly-anticipated new album. The Disney+ special, named after the album, Endless Summer Vacation, will be a backyard sessions special set to drop on 10th March and will see the singer perform a number of hits from the new record, including the smash-hit single, Flowers, as well as old classics. Miley will also perform a duet with Rufus Wainwright and we can't wait to watch!

Lana Del Rey has hinted that her appearance at this year's Glastonbury festival may be in question. The singer was placed on the bill of acts performing at the annual event last week when main headline acts Arctic Monkeys and Guns and Roses were announced, but Lana was seemingly unimpressed that festival bosses failed to mention she was the headline act for the Other stage. Taking to social media, she told her fans she was the headline act for the second stage, before adding that since there was no consideration for the announcement, she would have 'to see' about whether the gig will go ahead. Meanwhile the festival has come under fire from fans about the lack of female headliners on the main stage, something Emily Eavis said would change for next year's lineup.

Lana Del Rey a Womens Guid event

The highly-anticipated new TV series Daisy Jones and the Six has finally been released and now star of the show, Suki Waterhouse, has shared her new single for fans to enjoy. The model and actress, who plays Karen on the new streaming show, has shared her new track, To Love, which will feature on her upcoming second album and is described by Suki as a distinct portrait of her heart. Meanwhile, Suki stars alongside Sam Claflin and Riley Keogh in Daisy Jones and the Six which you can stream now on Prime Video.

And Chaka Khan has issued an apology for comments she made about a list ranking the greatest singers of all time. The Queen of Funk told writers at Rolling Stone that they needed hearing aids after she was unimpressed by being ranked 29 out of 200 singers, but Chaka has now said sorry on social media, stating that she took to the bait to pit artists against each other. The soul singer added that being a musician or artist is not competition, but a gift for which she is truly grateful, before stating that she did not intend to cause pain or upset for anyone.

Adele Dazzles at Homecoming Concert in Hyde Park: ‘London, I Love You So Much’

postponed residency las vegas burning questions caesars

First things first: Adele showed up.

And in many ways, that was the biggest hurdle Adele had to clear on her way to triumphing at the first of two shows at London’s American Express Presents BST Hyde Park festival.

You see, the last time Adele headlined a massive outdoor run in her hometown, in 2017, she canceled the last two shows of her scheduled four-night Wembley Stadium stint after damaging her vocal cords. In fact, this was her first full live show since then.

More recently, there was the small matter of her Las Vegas residency, scrapped at the very last minute, leaving many British fans stranded in Sin City. So when Adele posted “Who’s ready for tomorrow?” on Instagram ahead of this huge show, many people’s retort might well have been along the lines of, “Let’s hope you’re ready…”

Add in some complaints over the cost of some tickets for these two 65,000-capacity gigs (although they were hardly out of line with other major concerts) and the general feeling that Adele – once as London as jellied eels – might have ‘gone all L.A.,’ her adopted home, and you have reasons for the first flickerings of, well, not hometown fury exactly. But definitely some good, old-fashioned British grumbling about the U.K.’s biggest star potentially losing touch with her roots.

Popular on Variety

None of that stopped the scalpers coming out in force, their mantra of, “Tickets for Adele, buy or sell” echoing around the approach to Hyde Park. Nor, apparently, did it prevent hundreds of fans turning up to listen to her soundcheck from outside the fence earlier in the day, or the likes of Cameron Diaz, Tom Cruise and James Corden from scoring tickets for her first show back.

But the signs were that tonight would not necessarily conform to the straightforward “returning superstar triumphs in hometown” narrative you’d expect. Until, that is, Adele started singing.

She emerged with minimal fanfare, clad in elegant black gown and statement earrings, singing “Hello.” But she barely got through the first line before exclaiming, “I’m so happy to be here!” and asking the crowd for some vocal assistance.

From that point on, the audience was fully on her side, the words to every heartbreak anthem echoing back along the seemingly endless rows of fans enjoying the evening sunshine.

But Adele worked them anyway. “It’s strange to be in front of a crowd again,” she said at one point but, in truth, she remains a natural. It’s become something of a cliché to suggest that her between-song banter contains as many hits as the actual musical element of the set, but it’s true.

It is certainly difficult to imagine any other global superstar announcing, “I’m fucking shitting myself!” as Adele did before a boisterous “I Drink Wine,” all exaggerated eyebrow raises and gurning to the fans who looked like they’d been following the song title’s advice to the letter. But neither could many other singers pull off her cruise ship compering style, reading the signs held aloft in the crowd and congratulating people on birthdays, anniversaries, “divorce parties,” exam results (“I failed all my exams and I’m doing alright”) or simply for making it here from such far-flung locations as Brazil, New Zealand and the United States.

One fan even mentions Wembley. “Were you coming to the shows I canceled?” she asks, aghast. “It’s the fifth anniversary, innit? I wasn’t going to bring it up…”

Most of the exchanges were less awkward. In fact, as she nattered away about staying up late to binge “Stranger Things,” her enjoyment of Britney Spears memes or taking her son to see Billie Eilish at the O2 Arena (“She was impeccable”), it was easy to forget you weren’t at a stand-up gig or a variety show down your local pub. Or at least it was if you could hear her – the cries of “Turn it up! Turn it up!” from outside the golden circle could be clearly heard above her chat, although seemingly not by Adele herself.

But still, at regular intervals, a major concert broke out. In recent years, Adele has seemed to save her most spectacular vocals for her weakest songs, but few stops were left un-pulled as “Skyfall” (after Adele halted it the first time, so security could help someone in the crowd) and “Easy on Me” reminded everyone of what a powerhouse, show-stopping singer she remains.

This may be just as well. In an age when even Ed Sheeran’s tours feature revolving stages and multiple effects, most of Adele’s set relied firmly on her voice to provide the fireworks. And she did – performing “All I Ask”, “Make You Feel My Love” (a spontaneous, unrehearsed selection not included on the initial setlist) and “Someone Like You” along the runway, backed only by a piano and 65,000 voices.

“As you probably know, I don’t have many up-tempo bangers,” she said at one point. But in fact, the ones she does have were amongst the highlights – a brassy “Rumor Has It,” a swinging “Oh My God” and a soaring “Set Fire to the Rain” reminding the crowd that this was a festival, rather than a more intimate soiree.

The latter even saw the special effects kick in, as someone took the title literally (Adele songs seem to have that effect on people) and a combination of real fire and fake rain sent black plumes of smoke billowing across Hyde Park. Patriotic red, white and blue confetti followed as an irresistible “Rolling in the Deep” closed the main set.

By the encore, Adele was ready to (obliquely) address the elephants in the, er, field. “I know a lot of things have happened with this album, I know a lot of you feel let down and I’m mortified,” she said, without giving specifics, after a gloriously emotional “When We Were Young.” “But I take my music very seriously and I had to do that.”

Whether that will appease those still waiting for Vegas to happen remains to be seen but, in the field, it seemed more than enough to restore Adele’s woman of the people status, as rapturous applause broke out.

“London, I love you so much,” she smiled in response. “So much.” And the feeling was clearly mutual. As a final, string-drenched “Love Is a Game” drifted across the fields, some actual fireworks lit up the crowd and more confetti arrived. This time, it was pink and red hearts, perfectly symbolizing the renewed love affair between the U.K.’s capital and its prodigal daughter.

Because in the end, Adele did what she (nearly) always does: she showed up, she sang, and she conquered.

Gabrielle  adds , “I’m so thrilled and proud to be part of what will be an incredible day, headlined by an artist I love and adore. Adele is a phenomenal singer songwriter and it is an honour to be asked to join her at British Summer Time.”

Adele  tweeted,  “The line up for my Hyde Park shows next week is going to blow your socks off!! An all female bill, from new artists that I’m obsessed with to the heavenly  @KaceyMusgraves  to one of my favorite artists of all time  @GabrielleUk  who I’ve loved since I was 4!!”

Gabrielle  made an immediate impact when her debut single ‘Dreams’ spent three weeks at #1 in the summer of 1993. Her second #1single, ‘Rise’, followed in 2000 and was embraced by fans as an anthem that helped them inspire them to keep the faith that better days would follow in the future. Her catalogue of hits includes a further eight Top 10 hits, notably ‘Out Of Reach’ (which featured in ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary’), ‘If You Ever’ (with East 17) and ‘Give Me A Little More Time’.

That success extended to albums too. Her 1999 #1 album ‘Rise’ was one of the most successful of the era and has been certified 4 x Platinum, a status matched by the compilation ‘Dreams Can Come True, Greatest Hits’. In total, six of her albums have reached the Top 10, including 2018’s ‘Under My Skin’

Gabrielle’s  popularity was matched by a succession of major awards. Highlights included two BRITs (Best British Female and Best British Breakthrough) as well MOBO Awards for Best Single (‘Give Me A Little More Time’) and Best Album (‘Rise’). After being nominated on five separate occasions, she won her first Ivor Novello Award in 2008 when she was honoured with the prestigious accolade for Outstanding Song Collection.

After earning a new generation of fans during her show-stealing performances on the 2021 edition of ‘The Masked Singer’, Gabrielle’s resurgenc e continued when her album  ‘Do It Again’  flew into the charts at #4 – her highest chart position in almost twenty years. Now with a huge tour and two of the biggest shows of her career coming up, Gabrielle’s well-deserved era of rediscovery continues.

Adele has announced she will play in Europe for the first time since 2016, with four nights booked in Germany.

The Grammy-winning singer shared on social media that she will be performing in Munich's Messe exhibition centre - which boasts a capacity of 80,000 - in a booking she called "a bit random".

At the end of 2023, she was asked if she wanted to perform a summer run of shows in Germany , saying: "I've been content as anything with my shows in London's Hyde Park and my residency in Vegas, so I hadn't had any other plans."

Adele explained however that she was "too curious to not follow up and indulge in this idea" to come back to Europe.

"A one-off, bespoke pop-up stadium designed around whatever show I want to put on? Ohh!?," she said.

"Pretty much slap bang in the middle of Europe? In Munich? That's a bit random, but still fabulous!

"Right after the Euros? Come on England! With the Olympics next door? Go on Simone! And some of my favourite artists playing shows too? Why…YES!! I haven't played in Europe since 2016!"

She signed off the post saying "Guten Tag babes," and shared a link where fans can register for tickets.

The 'Someone Like You' hitmaker will perform at Munich Messe on 2, 3, 9, 10, 14, 16, 23 and 24 August.

According to setlist.fm, which tracks live performances, Adele has played in Germany just 14 times.

Her last show in the country was on 15 May 2016, at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne. Her first ever was at the Stage Club in Hamburg back in 2008.

Adele is also performing the last leg of her Las Vegas residency Weekends With Adele, which runs through to mid-June.

Ticket registration for the Munich shows is open now at Adele.com and closes on 5 February. General sale then opens to the public on 9 February.

Adele is yet to announce any official tour dates for 30 but she has already got some special performances lined up.

Listen to this article

Adele 's fourth album 30 is finally here and there is already huge demand for a tour, but fans may have to wait a while for one.

Given that Adele is one of the most successful recording artists of all time, it's no surprise that people always want to watch her perform live. In fact, Adele is so popular that more than 2.9 million people paid for tickets to see the 32-year-old sing all of her hits on her Adele Live 2016 tour in support of her previous album 25 . However, she hasn't toured live since then.

Naturally, people are begging for Adele to do a 30 tour. With that in mind, here's what she's said about taking it on the road.

Will Adele do a 30 tour?

Adele 30 Tour: Is Adele going on tour?

Speaking on SiriusXM's Hits 1 , Adele explained: "This album? No, probably not. I’d love to. I was actually desperate to tour, which for me is wild because I don’t like touring. I got into the swing of it last time and obviously I’ve gone up to stadiums. Without sounding spoiled, it’s easier because there’s less shows, you reach more people, you get to stay in place."

Adele then added: "It doesn’t sit right with me putting an album out this year and then touring it in 2023." While she didn't specify exactly why she won't tour, it seems likely that it's due to the complications of coronavirus restrictions and Adele wanting to spend time with her son.

While there won't be a 30 tour, Adele is performing two one-off concerts in the UK. She will be performing in Hyde Park on July 1 and July 2 in 2022. Tickets for both dates have sold out though. Some are being resold but at much higher costs than the original tickets.

As it stands, Adele is yet to announce any more one-off live concerts in the UK, US or elsewhere but we shall update you if she does.

What are the dates for weekends with Adele?

In addition, a planned concert film was announced, with filming set to take place during the newly-announced dates.

But one fan has begged for her to continue even after the extended dates, writing, "Adele, wait for me until I finish college, I'm saving so i can afford to buy your ticket I love you."

Some begged for her to extend the tour to other parts of the world.

One fan wrote, "Please, in EUROPE" and another put, "Come to (the rest of the US) USA please I really want to see your world tour please do it here."

How long is Adele's residency?

Adele's residency has so far ran from 18 Nov 2022 to 25 Mar 2023 and the further six-month extension from June to November 2023 means that Adele's residency in Las Vegas will have run for almost 12-months. The first set of dates comprised of a five-month series of Friday and Saturday night shows.

The residency was originally planned to take place between 21 January and 16 April 2022 but it was delayed on 20 January when Adele announced the postponement of the entire residency, at the time she told fans, "I'm so sorry, but my show ain't ready. Half my team have COVID and it's been impossible to finish the show."

Adele announces new European tour dates as she hits the road for first time in six years

Adele will be performing in Europe for the first time since 2016 this summer, with the singer admitting her four planned dates are 'a bit random, but still fabulous'

Adele will be taking her show on the road and performing in a "one off, bespoke pop-up stadium" in Germany this summer.

The singer - who is currently performing a residency in Las Vegas - hasn't toured in 6 years and previously admitted she probably wouldn't hit the road again as it "doesn't suit me particularly well."

But it appears the Set Fire To The Rain hitmaker, 35, has had a change of heart. Adele will perform at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas, for the final time on 15th June, before taking kickstarting a new run of shows over in Munich.

Announcing the new tour dates this morning, Adele admitted performing in Europe for the first time since 2016 will be a "wonderful" and a fitting way to "end this beautiful phase of my life and career with shows closer to home during such an exciting summer."

The mum-of-one will takes to the stage at Open Air Arena, Messe München for four dates across two weeks in August - Friday 2nd August 2024, Saturday 3rd August 2024, Friday 9th August 2024, Saturday 10th August 2024. Artist presale starts at 10am on Wednesday 7th February, with the general sale commencing two days later.

Writing on Instagram this morning, the award-winning singer told fans: “So a few months ago I got a call about a summer run of shows. I’ve been content as anything with my shows in London’s Hyde Park and my residency in Vegas, so I hadn’t had any other plans. However, I was too curious to not follow up and indulge in this idea – a one off, bespoke pop-up stadium designed around whatever show I want to put on? Ohh!? Pretty much slap bang in the middle of Europe? In Munich? That’s a bit random, but still fabulous! Right after the Euros? Come on England! With the Olympics next door? Go on Simone!

If you can't see the poll, click here

And some of my favourite artists playing shows too? Why…YES!! I haven’t played in Europe since 2016! I couldn’t think of a more wonderful way to spend my summer and end this beautiful phase of my life and career with shows closer to home during such an exciting summer. Guten Tag babes x."

Fans were quick to react to the shock news, with one declaring: "One thing about Adele is she going to do anything to make her fans happy." Another took to the comment section underneath Adele's bombshell post and wrote: "OMG OMG OMG OMG EUROPEAN ROAD TRIP."

As her epic world tour came to an end in 2017, Adele warned fans she probably wouldn't tour the globe again - penning a heartfelt note to fans on Instagram after playing the first of four massive shows at London’s Wembley Stadium. In the handwritten note, the mum-of-one told followers: "So this is it after 15 months on the road and 18 months of ’25’ we are at the end. We have taken this tour across UK + Ireland, throughout Europe, all over America and I finally got to go to Australia and New Zealand too."

"Touring is a peculiar thing, it doesn’t suit me particularly well," she continued. "I’m a real homebody and I get so much joy in the small things. Plus I’m dramatic and have a terrible history of touring. Until now that is! I’ve done 119 shows and these last 4 will take me up to 123, it has been hard out an absolute thrill and pleasure to have done."

She added: "I only ever did this tour for you and to hopefully have an impact on you the way that some of my favourite artist have had on me live. And I wanted my final shows to be in London because I don’t know if I’ll ever tour again and so I want my last time to be at home. Thank you for coming, for all of your ridiculous love and kindness. I will remember all of this for the rest of my life. Love you. Goodnight for now."

Meet the diehard music fan who runs one of the world's busiest arenas

  • London's O2 Arena is one of the world's busiest and sold a record 2.5 million tickets last year.
  • The venue is managed by Steve Sayer, a music fan who previously worked for Manchester City.
  • The O2 Arena presents comedy, boxing, UFC, esports and even monster trucks as well as music.

Insider Today

It may not be the world's most famous, but London's O2 Arena is now one of the busiest.

The venue, part of what began life as the Millennium Dome but was renamed The O2 following its sponsorship by a cell network, sold a record 2.5 million tickets last year — about 200,000 more than in 2022 — according to AEG.

That puts it in the same league as New York's Madison Square Garden, which first opened in 1879. Its London rival has only been oeprating since June 2007.

The O2 Arena has sold more than 30 million tickets since then, and in December notched up its 3,000th event: a concert by Tom Jones. The Welsh singer is known for songs such as "It's Not Unusual," and "Thunderball," which Business Insider once ranked as the 23rd best James Bond theme song (out of, erm, 25).

The arena is run by Steve Sayer, who joined AEG Europe a decade ago as commercial director before becoming general manager five years later. We meet in the windowless depths of the arena in the area behind the stage one chilly afternoon in March, just a couple of hours before a Jason Derulo concert.

Sayer says the O2 is one of those venues that "artists really want to play" because headlining it marks what he calls an "arrival moment" in their careers. Some 24 acts including SZA and Ateez headlined the arena for the first time last year, with a similar number including Olivia Rodrigo and Noah Kahan doing so this year.

Prince played an epic run of 21 sold-out dates in the summer of 2007, while Sayer also cites Madonna's six shows last year, along with runs from the likes of Elton John, Monty Python, Adele, and the Spice Girls as some of the venue's most memorable.

The O2 hosts about 220 shows a year, and Sayer is ultimately responsible for some 190 full-time staff, and as many as 700 on event days. While "it has its stresses from time to time, like any senior role — it's pretty full-on," he maintains that running the O2 is an enjoyable job.

Creating a good workplace culture is very important for Sayer, but so is "having fun along the way. I like to use that world thrive — I want people here to have a great experience as an employee, have opportunities to learn and develop and grow."

He describes music as his main passion, having grown up with two brothers who played a lot of records, and then started going to gigs and festivals as a teenager, discovering dance music and "the rest is history really."

Related stories

Sayer, 49, says he decided to go to university in Manchester because of its music scene. After graduating with a geography degree he started working for the soccer club Manchester City, staying for 17 years and ending up as operations director overseeing match days and major events.

Sayer says he and his team have considerable autonomy to run the O2 Arena — the biggest business unit of AEG Europe — as they see fit. It was crowned "venue of the decade" by Billboard magazine in 2019, which suggests they're getting it right.

The division also operates arenas in Paris, Berlin, and Hamburg, as well as music festivals, tours, and other events. It's part of AEG, which was founded by Philip Anschutz and has become one of the world's biggest sports and live entertainment businesses.

While music accounts for about two-thirds of its shows, the arena also hosts everything from comedy to sport in the form of WWE, UFC, boxing, darts, and tennis; esports such as this November's League of Legends world championships; family and podcast shows — and even monster trucks.

The arena was closed for 18 months in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic and Sayer says there was some doubt about whether demand for live entertainment would return, but those fears proved unfounded.

He rates the first post-pandemic show by Gorillaz — one of Sayer's favorite acts — as his top gig ever at the arena. It was a thank-you for staff in the UK's National Health Service — "the atmosphere was unbelievable that night." His other top acts are Leftfield, New Order, and The Killers.

Even before COVID-19 struck there'd been a growth in the "experience economy," and Sayer says that's even more the case now, with very buoyant demand for live performances in stadiums and festivals as well as arenas like his.

Something else that seems to keep rising is ticket prices. Sayer agrees that the cost of seeing some top-end superstars has escalated, but supply and demand is a factor along with higher costs for touring and production.

He says prices for some tickets for Madonna's Celebration tour last year were high, but that the production values for the show were "incredible." (This writer forked out a three-figure sum to see it, and apart from a late arrival meaning an abrupt early end when the 11pm curfew struck, I'm inclined to agree.)

AEG is improving the arena by adding 5G coverage, "frictionless" food and drink outlets, and refurbishing performers' dressing rooms.

It's also replaced 12 corporate boxes with The NinetyThird by Qatar Airways — a private members' club that costs about $20,000 a year and boasts a retractable walkway over the arena for a "wow" factor.

Sayer says this year is proving just as busy as 2023 for the O2 Arena with shows coming up from Take That, Olivia Rodrigo, Liam Gallagher, Girls Aloud, and The Killers.

One record that the London venue may not be able to break any time soon, however, is Billy Joel's decade-long residency at Madison Square Garden. The Piano Man is due to perform at the venue for the 150th time in July.

London Marathon 2024 guide: When is it, route, records and how to watch

T he London Marathon, a fixture of the spring sporting calendar returns this year after a record-breaking number of entrants in the 2023 edition.

The race will be the first London Marathon held since the death of Kelvin Kiptum , last year’s men’s winner and world record holder, in a car crash in Kenya.

When is the 2024 London Marathon? Time and date

The London Marathon 2024 takes place this Sunday, so April 21.

The elite and wheelchair races set off at staggered times, with the elite wheelchair men’s and women’s races getting under way at 8.15am (BST). The elite women’s race starts at 9am, while the elite men hit the road at 9.40am.

The London Marathon route for 2024: where does it start and finish?

The London Marathon route follows its usual course, starting in Greenwich and Blackheath where entrants are split into three lines which converge at the three-mile mark. The route heads east into Woolwich, then back west towards Greenwich town centre, through Rotherhithe and Bermondsey. From there it crosses north over Tower Bridge, which signals the approximate halfway mark. Athletes then complete a circuit around Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs before the course runs west along the north bank of the Thames past the Tower of London towards Trafalgar Square and onto the Mall where it finishes in front of Buckingham Palace.

To download a map of the course, click here .

Some of London’s most famous landmarks feature on the course.

  • Cutty Stark, mile six
  • Tower Bridge, mile 12
  • Tower of London, mile 22
  • London Eye, mile 25
  • Big Ben, mile 25
  • Buckingham Palace, mile 26

What are the best viewing spots?

The busiest spots on the course are usually Greenwich, Tower Bridge and Westminster. There are ordinarily many fewer spectators from mile 9-12 (Rotherhithe and Bermondsey) and mile 14-21 (Canary Wharf and the Isle of Dogs). For the chance to see the runners pass by twice, head to The Highway in Wapping which is used first from West to East and then again from East to West, although this tends to be a popular viewing point.

How many people run the London Marathon?

Last year 49,272 runners started the race with 43,965 finishing it (that’s 5,307 people who did not complete the course).

London Marathon prize money

This year for the first time equal prize money will be offered for the wheelchair and able-bodied races. The winner of each elite race will take home £43,500.

London Marathon event director Hugh Brasher said: “We have made great strides in recent years towards our ambition to make the London Marathon the most diverse and equitable marathon in the world and this is another important step towards achieving that goal.”

What TV channel is the London Marathon on?

The London Marathon will be shown on BBC as well as BBC iPlayer and the Red Button. This year’s broadcast schedule has not yet been confirmed but in 2023 the main broadcast started on BBC One at 8.30am, then moved to BBC Two at 2.15pm and exclusively to the iPlayer and online at 3pm. Highlights were shown on BBC Two at 6pm.

The production involves about 200 people, 40 cameras and half a dozen motorbikes. Multiple helicopters are used to help broadcast the elite races. Recently commentators have included Steve Cram, Paula Radcliffe and Tanni Grey-Thompson.

Stars to look out for in this year’s London Marathon

Celebrities such as comedian Romesh Ranganathan, musician Tom Grennan and actor Phil Dunster will make their London Marathon debuts on Sunday. They will be joined by Birmingham City interim manager Gary Rowett, EastEnders stars Emma Barton and Jamie Borthwick and Sky Sports’ Natalie Pinkham.

Returning participants include: James Cracknell, Mark Wright, Adele Roberts, Louise Minchin and Chris Robshaw.

What is the average London Marathon time?

Last year, competitors completed the London Marathon in an average time of 4hr 6min, a 12-minute improvement from the 2022 average of 4hr 18min.

Who won the London Marathon in 2023?

Kelvin Kiptum won the men’s race last year, breaking the course record with a time of 2hr 1min 25sec. Kiptum, 24, was killed in a car crash in February . The London Marathon will honour the Kenyan in a series of tributes this Sunday.

The women’s winner in 2023 was Sifan Hassan, who was running her debut marathon . Hassan lost touch with the leading group when she stopped to stretch but caught up again and prevailed in a sprint finish.

London Marathon records

Kelvin Kiptum broke the course record, with a 2hr 1min 25sec run last year. Paula Radcliffe holds the women’s course record, with a time of 2:15:25, set in 2003.

When was the first London Marathon?

The first London Marathon took place on March 29, 1981. Inspired by the New York City Marathon’s launch in 1970, Olympic steeplechase medallists Chris Brasher and John Disley created the London edition with hopes to “provide some happiness and sense of achievement in a troubled world”.

Only 7,741 runners set out from Greenwich Park for the first London Marathon, a fraction of the 50,000-plus expected to cross the start line this Sunday.

How to enter the London marathon

There are six ways to secure a place at the 2025 London Marathon: through the ballot, charity entry, good for age entry, British Athletics Club entry, deferred entry or through a tour operator, for those who live abroad.

The TCS London Marathon MyWay also allows people to complete a 26.2-mile route of their choosing, wherever they are in the world.

London Marathon ballot: when is it and how does it work?

London Marathon hopefuls can enter through the ballot, with successful applicants selected at random. The 2025 draw opens on Saturday, April 20 and closes on Friday, April 26. Winners will earn a place in next year’s race, which will be held on April 27, 2025.

Unsuccessful applicants will automatically be entered into a second ballot, where they will be twice as likely to secure a spot.
