Hike Alaska: Glaciers and Denali

Had a wonderful time in Alaska. A combination of the sights and sounds and what we saw as well as the CEO and other participants made it a great experience. A well balanced program with options to please all interests, it was a good time for all of us. Can't control the weather though, which would have made it a five star vacation. Would do it again in a heartbeat.

The tour itself was fabulous. Tour guide and driver were both awesome and the sights were majestic. The food however the first few days was lacking.

Alaska: Ocean Wildlife to Interior Wilderness Adventure - 9 Days

Time flies when you're having fun. Me and my daughter had an excellent time on this trip. 11 days seems like a long time but with so much to do, it flew by. We were able to see parts of Alaska that few get the opportunity to see. There were plenty of wildlife encounters including the Brown Bears, Moose, Eagles, Caribou, fox, lynx, whales, and swans. Adam and Daniel were accommodating to be sure we got the full experience of what we wanted to do. The hotels and cabins were perfectly fine with no problems. The excursion started with us being picked up at the Anchorage Airport, settling into the hotel and a nice dinner overlooking the ship river. the next morning a drive down the Seward highway, a bush plane flight to Lake Clark Ntl Park to the Great Bear Lodge (great view of the volcano Mt Iliamna). Excursions to the beach to watch the brown bears dig clams, there are plenty of bears to see. After the flight out, it was 2 nights in Seward, we opted for deep sea fishing and caught 2 halibut, 4 rockfish each as well as breaching whales 100 yards from the boat. Next was a relaxing (napping) ferry ride to Val Dez. What happens in Val Dez, stays in Val Dez. The following morning was the drive to McCarthy where we toured the Kennicot mine and river rafted. Finally a drive to Denali and a bus tour through the park where we watched bear, moose, caribou, eagles and so on. Mt. Denali was shrouded in clouds so we did not see the peak this trip. This tour is great to be able to see the diverse areas of Alaska. If anything, I would have liked to spend another day in Seward, Val Dez, and Denali but there certainly are time restraints. We began our trip in Fairbanks for 3 days on our own, which is also a great area to visit. I would highly recommend this tour.

Nature's Best: Alaska

We loved everything except the boat tour out of Seward. The seas were way too rough to go out. It was the final tour of the year on that boat. It should of been cancelled and refunded in full. We received $50 each back because the tour was shortened from 6 hours to 5 hours. I repeat again. Waste of time. I did not take a picture. People were throwing up (plenty of them). Did not see any whales. We were notified the day before that the seas could be rough. Globus should of taken the initiative and cancelled. Did not have a good time at all.

We had a wonderful time. The tour was well planned and well managed. The CEO was excellent ..good driver, good communicator, had good knowledge of the local attractions and made great recommendations for restaurants. The group we were with was also a very pleasant group which made the experience that much more enjoyable. That said, would have loved to see the accommodations updated.. most except the Denali cabins were old and "weathered".

Exceeded expectations, everything was smooth. Great guide.
Our spectacular Alaska trip was very good. The tour guide, Nick, did a good job of making sure everything went well and that our bus rides were not too long. Meals and included excursions were good. Our bus driver, Tamah, did a great job. We were able to visit some wonderful parts of Alaska in a short time and had fun doing so.

Tips on Booking a Solo Alaska Cruise Aboard a Small Ship

A single female traveler waves from the entrance to a tribal house in Alaska

Want to go to Alaska as a single traveler? An Alaska small ship cruise is an excellent way to go if you’re up for adventure. While the experience will be quite different from something like a themed Alaska singles cruise aboard a large cruise ship (see our Alaska Big Ship vs Small Ship for all the core reasons why), if your idea of fun is more off the ship than on one, then you’ll find good company.

There are currently no dedicated Alaska singles cruise sailings aboard expedition ships, but there are plenty of ways to get aboard with a mix of couples, families and other solo travelers.

Solo Cruises to Alaska – What They’re Like

Aboard a small expedition ship with AdventureSmith Explorations, it can be a lot like “a summer camp for adults,” as one of our past passengers described it. Depending on your ship and cruise itinerary, often different levels of adventure are offered, pairing you with different small groups of other travelers multiple times each day. One day, for example, you might pair up with a guide or another traveler into a double kayak. You might take a shoreline walk, or opt for a longer hike into wilderness with a group of 8. Meals are casual affairs with open seating and various table configurations, and often the guides join you for meals.

Alaska Cruise Single Supplements Explained

Imagine booking a hotel room as a solo traveler: the rate is the same whether you have two people in the room or not. That’s the same with cabins aboard a ship. But to help out single travelers, cruise operators will often offer a “single supplement.” This equates into a percentage that a person will pay in addition to the double-occupancy rate to book the cabin for solo occupancy.

For example, some single supplements are 50%. This means the solo traveler would have to pay the normal double-occupancy price, plus 50% of the cabin’s other listed (per-person) double-occupancy rate. The same concept for Alaska single cruise supplements, listed another way by some operators, is noted as “1.5x the per-person rate.”

You have questions. We have answers.

Finding No Single Supplement on Alaska Cruises & Other Deals

To avoid a single supplement, simply find a ship that offers dedicated single cabins. These may not always be priced as low as double-occupancy cabins, but some might be. Dedicated single cabins are often smaller in size, and have a single twin bed, versus two twin beds. Ships with dedicated solo cabins in Alaska include, for example, the 22-guest Safari Quest , 36-guest Safari Explorer , 74-guest Wilderness Explorer and 60-guest Wilderness Adventurer . And some ships like the 12-guest Sea Star do not charge a single supplement at all for a few of their double-occupancy cabins.

Another way to skip single supplements is to browse our many Alaska cruise deals to find special offers for waived or reduced single supplements on Alaska cruises. Take a peek, or contact our team to search the best Alaska singles cruise deals for you.

How To Find Best Alaska Cruises For Solo Travelers On A Budget

alaska cruise solo traveler

An excellent choice for all single travelers is to go on an Alaska Cruise this summer. You can experience the excitement of the destination in a new, endearing way while making new friends and acquaintances along the way.

Alaska is one such location if you are looking to explore a destination you have not visited yet. You can get the experience of a lifetime while introspecting about life during this vacation.

However, if you think traveling alone means you will have to backpack through rough terrains and live at the destination without a plan, think twice! You can cruise through the vacation and have a luxurious time, all by yourself, for an unforgettable experience. Here is how.

Why Alaska cruises for solo travelers?

alaska cruise solo traveler

Cruising is now becoming essentially popular, being the best way to vacation for socializing. On-board, a cruise has numerous facilities to offer to everyone, even solo travelers, including sophisticated fine dining, fun casinos, cooking classes, spas, swimming pools, and much more. You can avail these state-of-the-art facilities on a cruise within your budget that promises a great time.

Therefore, once you start with your solo cruise adventure and start socializing with the community within, you cannot stop. Cruises for solo travelers are known to be extremely addictive.

Tips for a great vacation on Alaska cruises for solo travelers

The biggest challenge with cruising as a solo traveler is that you will find a surcharge on a variety of cruise lines and itineraries. This charge could be anything from 50% and 100% of the cabin/room rates. So, it can be very expensive to cruise.

Here are the top five tips to show how you can cruise in a much more cost-effective manner.

1. Search for solo cruises

alaska cruise solo traveler

Search out cruise lines and ships that have solo cabins. The good news is that almost all the major cruise lines, as they are growing, are bringing newer ships with many solo cabins. They understand that solo traveling is a new trend and are working on increasing the number of cabins dedicated only to singles.

A few of the cruise lines that can be recommended to you are the Cunard cruise line, the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth, and Queen Victoria. These are ships that include solo cabins.

There might not be a lot of them, but they are available. The only thing you need to do is search.

There are also some cruise lines, like the Royal Caribbean and the Norwegian cruise line, which you can look forward to booking your next Alaska cruises for solo travelers. The Norwegian cruise line has one of the most innovative things when it comes to solo cruising. They have a whole area on their larger ships, dedicated to solo travelers with their cabins. So, you get a dedicated area that can be accessed with your cruise card, offering you an extra bit of security. They also have a dedicated singles lounge and a common room for singles to socialize.

When looking for a cruise, ask your cruise agent for ships and cruise lines with specific solo cabins. That is your best way of finding a great fare.

2. Look forward to a great deal catering to your needs.

The second thing to consider is to look specifically at Alaska cruises for solo travelers. Many cruises are present that will go up and down the path, offering great deals with solo cabins. It is very easy to find solo traveler deals on certain cruise lines. You will usually find lots of solo travelers, and these cruise lines do cater to the requirements for solo traveling. Alaskan cruises are a great option for solo cruisers.

3. Sign up for a partner

alaska cruise solo traveler

The third tip is that some cruise lines actually offer programs where they will partner up solo travelers. You will find that happens quite a lot on some of the more exotic location cruises , including Alaska. They will often offer schemes where they will partner sets of travelers together.

Even mainstream cruise lines like Holland America or Princess offer opportunities like these.

So you can approach the cruise line while booking your solo vacation or your cruise agent to get you the best deals and find out if they run those programs on your particular itinerary.

Of course, the downside is that you may be cruising with people you may or may not get along with. Still, on some of those itineraries, which are very port intensive, you may find you do not mind that because it helps you save the extra 50-100% of the surcharge, which is always worth taking this risk of partnership program.

4. Sign up for blogs and newsletters

The fourth tip is to sign up for solo traveler’s sites, forums, and blogs. A couple of really good blogs specifically target solo travelers. They are always on the lookout for deals in their posts and newsletters; they will always publish when they come across some special deals and offers to target solo travelers.

One such blog to consider is solotravelerblog.com, one of the largest online resources for solo travel advice and deals.

Apart from signing up for these newsletters and posts, you can also check if any particular cruise lines really appeal to you, whether it is Royal Caribbean, Holland America. It is on their newsletters where they will also publish promotions and other deals to solo travelers. These newsletters will have a specific time of the year or a program targeted at solo travelers.

5. Take Google’s help

alaska cruise solo traveler

The fifth tip is actually related to using the internet. What you can do on sites like Gooogle, for example, is if you search “Alaska cruises for solo travelers” or “solo cruise deals,” etc., it will offer you various resources and tips. You can set up alerts for these. It is very easy to do, if you type in a particular search term, you can set up an alert, and as various articles, promotional deals start coming up, they can be picked up by the Google search engine, which will then be sent to you as an alert.

You can find a cost-effective way to travel to Alaska on a cruise this summer through these five tips. It can be very expensive to go on a cruise as a solo traveler, with the extra surcharge. But there are different resources you can utilize. Increasingly, the good news is that cruise lines are now focusing on solo travelers.

How affordable are Alaska cruises for solo travelers?

When traveling solo, the budget can be a significant factor. However, you do not have to opt for a budget cruise line to manage your expenses for the trip, neither do you need to spend a fortune to enjoy all the facilities on your cruise vacation.

However, the reality is far from that. Most cruise lines are offering occupancy tariffs and discounts, keeping in view two people and traveling companions. Therefore, in most places, when you search, cabins are priced based on double occupancy or “single supplement.” But, with growing trends and the current times, these cruise lines are recognizing the need for solo travelers, and based on just one person, they are refurbishing their costs, discounts, and cabins as well.

Conclusion:

Going on a cruise for solo travelers should not be a big hassle. With the proper planning and the right approach, you can easily hop on a ship and have the time of your life. Keep these tips in mind for a fun-filled exploration, and you will not regret overspending your pre-planned budget.

The 5 best cruise lines for solo travelers

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

Thinking of taking a cruise as a solo traveler? Here's the bad news: With many lines, you could end up paying twice as much as someone traveling with a companion.

Most cruise ship cabins are designed for two, and the cruise rates you see advertised for these cabins are per person, based on double occupancy . That means the rates are only available to customers who will be sharing the cabin with a second paying passenger.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's new cruise newsletter .

If you want to occupy one of these cabins alone, you'll pay a premium that, in cruise world lingo, is known as the "single supplement." Often, that premium is 100%. In other words, even if you don't have a second person in your cabin, you'll be paying an extra fare as if you did.

Still, all is not lost if you're a singleton wanting to experience life at sea. Spurred by increasing demand, a growing number of cruise lines are adding cabins designed specifically for solo travelers (with pricing that, by definition, is based on single occupancy). Some lines routinely offer lower single supplement charges than others, or they reduce or waive single supplements during promotions.

Of course, it's not just a low price that makes for a good solo cruise. Just as important for many people traveling alone is the opportunity to meet other like-minded solo travelers through meet-and-greet receptions and organized group dining for solo cruisers. Some cruise lines do a better job with this than others.

Looking at all these criteria — price, cabin options and a welcoming environment — I've identified five lines going the extra mile for cruisers traveling alone. Here are my top picks for the best cruise lines for solo travelers.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Credit Norwegian for kicking off the trend of more solo cabins on cruise ships. In 2010, the big-ship line debuted an entire zone of small "studio" cabins for one — 128 in all — on its then-new, 4,100-passenger Norwegian Epic. It was such a hit that other lines began to follow.

Just 100 square feet but superbly designed to maximize storage space, the solo rooms on Norwegian Epic are clustered around an exclusive Studio Lounge. It has a bar and television area where solo travelers can mingle at daily hosted happy hour gatherings.

alaska cruise solo traveler

Norwegian has since added similar solo cabin areas with exclusive lounges to seven more new ships, including its two newest vessels, Norwegian Viva and Norwegian Prima . Both ships have a 73-cabin solo complex that spreads across two decks.

The bigger Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Escape and Norwegian Bliss all have an 82-cabin solo complex, while two older ships — Norwegian Breakaway and Norwegian Getaway — have solo areas with 59 cabins.

Norwegian also offers four solo cabins on its Hawaii-based Pride of America.

Having sailed in one of Norwegian's cabins for one, I can confidently declare them among the coolest solo digs at sea. I particularly love the futuristic "Jetsons"-like design and the multicolored mood lighting.

One big caveat: They're all inside cabins without an ocean view, although most have a window that looks out onto a corridor. On Norwegian Bliss, the solo cabins have a virtual porthole that offers a live view of the outside world via an LED screen.

Related: Why a windowless inside cabin isn't so bad

A bigger caveat, perhaps, is that these solo cabins have become so popular they often sell out far in advance, and at prices that aren't much better than booking a cabin for two.

Royal Caribbean

Royal Caribbean has taken a page from Norwegian's playbook in recent years by adding solo cabins to both new and older ship classes . The line's Quantum-class vessels, which began debuting in 2014, offer up to 28 of these dedicated studio cabins, which measure from 101 to 119 square feet.

Unlike Norwegian's solo digs, some cabins are ocean-view rooms with balconies. Others have a virtual balcony that, at first glance, looks like a veranda but is really just a digital screen projecting a real-time view of the outside. (It sounds corny, but it works.)

alaska cruise solo traveler

Other Royal Caribbean ships with solo cabins include some of the line's giant Oasis-class vessels, including Symphony of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas . Several of Royal Caribbean's older Voyager-class and Radiance-class vessels also have solo cabins. But some of these ships have just two or three.

While the solo cabins on Royal Caribbean ships don't come with a dedicated solo lounge, solo travelers will find Royal Caribbean-hosted meetups for solo travelers on the vessels, which is a great way for single travelers to find others in the same boat, so to speak. There's also quite a bar scene on Royal Caribbean ships, with rows of bar seats in many bars that are a great place to find other solo travelers.

Additionally, Royal Caribbean ships are particularly known for their wide range of onboard activities, from big-production shows to rock-climbing walls and surfing pools, that you can enjoy just fine as a solo traveler.

Silversea Cruises

Unlike Norwegian and Royal Caribbean, Silversea hasn't created a specific cabin category for solo travelers. But the luxury line is known for catering to them with single supplements of just 10% to 25% on select sailings. Occasionally, during short-term promotions, the line even will waive the single supplement entirely.

Silversea also hosts welcome receptions for solo travelers at the start of every voyage to kick off the mingling process.

alaska cruise solo traveler

Operating relatively small, intimate vessels that carry just a few hundred passengers, Silversea is known for drawing a social crowd that likes to mix and mingle, particularly at dinnertime — a boon for people like me who don't like to eat alone.

Head to the main lounge just before dinner on a Silversea ship, and there's a good chance you'll be pulled into a conversation with a group of complete strangers who will extend a dinner invitation. This has happened to me so many times on Silversea ships that I almost count on it.

Related: 6 reasons you'll want to book a balcony cabin on your next cruise

On Silversea's expedition sailings, you can also share meals with ship naturalists and expedition guides who join passengers in public dining venues. From my experience, they are always amenable to a friendly dining companion and some good conversation.

Virgin Voyages

Of course, there's always the rebellious startup line Virgin Voyages , backed by Richard Branson's Virgin Group, which draws fun-loving folks (but not just millennials ). It's shaping up to be a leader in the solo cruise market, judging from my experience when I sailed on its first ship, Scarlet Lady .

The vessel boasts 46 cabins specifically designed for lone travelers — as do its newer sisters, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . That's a big number for a ship with just 1,330 cabins overall. We haven't yet sailed in one of their solo rooms, but based on what we saw when we toured Scarlet Lady, they might just become the coolest digs-for-one around.

alaska cruise solo traveler

The solo accommodations on Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady include 40 windowless, 105-square-foot Solo Insider rooms on each vessel that are sleek and stylish with full-size beds, large flat-screen televisions, curvy vanities and high-design bathrooms. Six similar-looking Solo Sea View cabins on each vessel measure about 130 square feet and offer windows.

Note that the solo cabins with windows are at the front of the ships, facing forward. While that's a spectacular location for sightseeing, seasoned cruisers know that cabins in this location can be bumpy in rough seas. I love a little movement when I cruise (how else do you know you're at sea?), but if you don't, consider yourself warned.

Meanwhile, for solos, you'll find that Virgin's hopping bar scene — and adult-focused atmosphere — is perfect for solos looking to meet up with other single travelers. With a ban on children under 18, you won't find families with kids on this line. It's all about solo travelers, couples and friend groups looking to have a good time and engage with their shipmates on board.

Related: The 5 most desirable cabin locations on any ship

Solo travelers looking for an upscale river cruise can often find a deal from Tauck, a high-end tour company with a European cruise division. It markets more than half a dozen river vessels.

Tauck often eliminates its single supplement completely on its least-expensive category of cabins (Category 1) and reduces single supplements for other cabin categories (with savings up to $1,000 in select categories).

alaska cruise solo traveler

On board, Tauck directors and cruise directors take special care of solo travelers, and communal tables at mealtime make it easy to meet other travelers.

Cruisers traveling alone can seek out others at the bar (no worries about the bar tab — drinks are included) or escape to a quiet sun deck spot with a book when they're tired of socializing. Daily shore excursions and tours are included, so you'll always have a group ready to explore with you on land.

River cruising in general is ideal for solo travelers, and other river lines also waive or significantly lower single supplement charges. Avalon Waterways waives its single supplement charge for some cabins on every cruise departure in Europe, and AmaWaterways charges a single supplement of just 50% for solo travelers booking non-suite cabins. It also has four ships in Europe that each have two dedicated solo cabins that carry no single supplement.

Bottom line

As someone who often cruises alone when writing about ships, I've found that smaller ships often are better for mixing and mingling than bigger ships .

On small ships, you'll see the same people again and again — on tours, in lounges, around the pool and so forth; this increases the odds you'll strike up a conversation and soon become fast friends. On big ships with thousands of passengers, you might go days without seeing the same person twice.

The lines that operate small ships are also more prone to offering discounts for solo travelers, which results in a higher percentage of individual cruisers onboard. That said, for the most part, the lines operating bigger ships are offering the most dedicated solo cabins. They also offer more onboard activities, from Broadway shows to rock-climbing walls, that you don't need companions to enjoy.

Not that you should worry too much about making friends at sea. Cruisers, in general, are social people. In fact, many passengers cruise specifically to meet others. I can't tell you how many times I've been sitting alone in a corner of a cruise ship lounge, minding my own business, when another passenger (or two or five) stopped by and struck up a conversation.

Whether you choose one of our top cruise lines for solo travelers or another line that suits your fancy, you're bound to have a good time with as much or as little alone time as you desire.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Frugal Solo Travelers

Princess Cruises from Seattle to Alaska promotes their trip as a life-changing adventure, which is the kind of trip I like. As a frugal traveler, looking for solo travel cruises, this seemed to be a good one. Finally, I had the time, and way to see real glaciers close up. Princess Cruises delivered on their promise. Want to relax, see beautiful Alaska, and like the great outdoors, Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers is a perfect Alaska Cruise.

My Frugal Travel Tip is Princess and other Alaska cruise companies, offer several different Alaska cruises. Prices go up and down throughout the year. Compare them all and find the one that is the best value. I found Princess Cruises to be the best value for me. It fit me perfectly.

The world is always changing, as Hurricane Harvey shows us, as it blasts Houston Texas. Better see the glaciers before the weather melts them away. They are melting pretty fast!

First port of call out of Seattle was Ketchikan, Alaska . This sleepy hamlet sits right on the Inside Passage. It was raining and cold, but I didn’t care because I had wet weather gear. It rains in Ketchikan often (150 extra inches a year), and it’s just the way things are. Accept Alaska for what it is, and you’ll have a better time. I winged it, jumped off the ship, whistling in the rain with no planned itinerary, I walked through Ketchikan .

I made my way down a street and ended up at a beautiful river, Ketchikan Creek. The closed salmon hatchery prevented me from seeing it. No worries, I have salmon hatcheries in Seattle. On to lunch, I stopped for fish and chips. Walking after my meal, I admired the ships docked in the local marinas as the rain soaked my jacket. One of the fishing boats featured on the television series the Deadliest Catch was at port, right there. The ship was hosting tours. Cruising through town, with no particular goal but to get a good feel for the area, neatly nestled on the island.

JUNEAU ALASKA

A real treat. The capital, Juneau, tries to show how big it is. Juneau, though, is just a sleepy town in Alaska. Again, I jumped off the ship and walked ten minutes to the tram (Goldbelt Mount Roberts Tramway). A round trip ticket costs USD 33. The tram zooms to the top, with killer views of greater Juneau, the fiords, and mountains that make Juneau what it is. There is a restaurant, museum and hiking trails to greet you at the top. You can even hike down from the top and end up back in downtown Juneau!

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

I had dinner at the Alaska Fish & Chips Company on the water–the best halibut fish I’ve ever eaten! After dinner, I walked to a downtown park and watched live music as the light started to disappear. What a day! Travel is the most fun when it’s simple and relatively unplanned. Simple things to do, and an uncomplicated itinerary. Yeah, that’s how I like to roll.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

GLACIERS AND FJORDS

My Princess ship maneuvered its way into the Endicott Arm, a thirty mile plus long fjord, framed by towering rocky mountain walls rising steeply from the water. The water turned a milky blue as we progressed further into the fjord. These fjords reminded me somewhat of Norway.

Alaska Princess Cruises for Solo Travelers

Dawes Glacier

Alaska Cruise took us right to the glacier. There it was. The Dawes Glacier. It was incredible to see it with my own eyes. The dense, thick ice cast a radiant blue color that glaciers are famous for their beauty. The fjord was not choked with ice as I expected. The fjords fill up with ice in the autumn.

Back to 1800s

During the late 19th century, Skagway was a booming town because of the Klondike Gold Rush. Skagway grew to about 30,000 people at the height of the gold rush. With that came bars, brothels, and hotels. People were coming in by ship and making their way inland to find gold, even though many if not most of the prospectors came up short in the gold department. In the end, though, it seems that the only individuals who got rich were the merchants who sold the gold rushers all of their gear.

Skagway is decidedly small. Just over a thousand people call the place home, although the population doubles in the spring when tourists start arriving. You can walk down the main drag and see that Skagway is truly a “one horse town.” Go to this site to see what Skagway has to offer. Frankly, Skagway was not a favorite stop of mine. Do a self-guided tour of Skagway since it’s enough to get a feel for the town, and to say you were there.

VICTORIA, BC, CANADA

Victoria is a quaint town that is easy going and fun to walk around. I jumped off the boat after docking and started walking to the Inner Harbor, about a 30-minute jaunI’ve been to Victoria many times, and this was a chance to enjoy the weather and vibe of Victoria. It was a warm spring evening, and the harbor area was bustling with tourists.

If you are a high tea fanatic, I’d recommend high tea at the Empress Hotel . I went to this tea many years ago, and even though many years have passed, I still have fond memories of the experience. The Empress has the best high tea experience I ‘ve had. The ambiance and the effort placed on the service is spectacular. Consider staying at the Empress, as you’ll be on the waterfront and have ready access to the high tea service!

Travel Tip: Travel plans always change. Travel can be full of surprises, some good and some not so good. Alaska Princess Cruises offers good Cruises for Solo Travelers.

Solo Trip to Alaska: Tips, thoughts, and what to expect

camila neves travel cami blogger in alaska

This summer, I went on one of the best adventures of my life: a solo trip to Alaska.

For one and a half months, I explored this gorgeous part of the United States and saw some of the most beautiful landscapes I had ever seen. From walking on a glacier to hiking by myself for miles and miles and seeing wildlife like moose and a baby humpback whale jumping right in front of my eyes, this trip was an unforgettable experience.

Also, one of the highlights of my trip was definitely meeting the locals and other fellow adventure-loving travelers. I was struck by how friendly and welcoming everyone was, and I loved hearing their stories about Alaska. I even got to hitchhike from Anchorage to Denali National Park with the help of wonderful people I met along the way.

Anyways, it was a blast! And I would love for more people to experience a life-changing trip like this.

In this post, you will find all my best tips for a solo trip to Alaska.

My experience (how did I afford it?)

I think it’s important to start this post by addressing how I was able to afford to stay in Alaska for more than a month as a budget traveler.

The answer is fairly simple: by exchanging some of my time for a place to stay.

Through Workaway, I found out that Base Camp Anchorage Hoste l was looking for some extra help with their cleaning in return for a free bed in a dorm room. And let me tell you, it was a great experience.

The hostel was an absolutely amazing place to stay, and I made some incredible friends from all over the world.

Also, I only worked for 5 hours 4 days a week, which left me with plenty of time to travel and explore Alaska.

15 Tips for solo travel in Alaska

Now that we have covered that, let’s get to all the information you need to know for solo travel in Alaska.

1- It can get (very) expensive

Alaska is not by any means a cheap destination, especially if you want to do activities like glacier hiking or Flightseeing.

That being said, it is possible to travel on a budget in Alaska. You just need to be a little bit creative and plan ahead – maybe even find a seasonal job or volunteer position if you want to stay for a while.

As with any solo trip, safety is an obvious concern.

I must say that since I was staying in Midtown, Anchorage was not the nicest area to walk around, but I did feel perfectly safe.

Outside of Anchorage, I never felt unsafe at all – even when I was hiking by myself or hitchhiking with strangers.

In fact, I was mesmerized by how genuinely kind and helpful everyone that I encountered (locals and tourists) was.

Of course, it is always important to take precautions when traveling solo, no matter where you go. And in Alaska, there are some extra safety concerns to keep in mind because of the wildlife, but we’ll cover that later.

alaska railroad

3- Budget for transportation costs

I don’t really drive, and knew that might be an issue on a trip to Alaska.

The truth is that transportation in Alaska – at least for tourists – is very doable without a car. But also super expensive.

There are plenty of options for getting around, whether it’s by bus, train, or plane. However, it is extremely important to budget for transportation if you choose those options instead of driving.

A two-and-a-half-hour bus from Anchorage to Seward was $100. The train? Around $150. And that’s for a one-way ticket.

I did take the bus and the train once – riding the Alaska Railroad is a fantastic experience – but also hitchhiked quite a lot to save money.

4- My thoughts oN hitchhiking in Alaska

As a solo female traveler, I am aware that hitchhiking is not always recommended and I honestly never even thought I would do it before Alaska, but it is a pretty common practice among backpackers over there.

I hitchhiked from Anchorage to Whittier and back and then from Anchorage to Denali National Park and back. I also hitchhiked inside Denali.

The thing is that many times people that pick you up are not going all the way to your final destination, so I ended up traveling with more than 15 different people. And honestly: they were all amazing, kind, and very respectful. So if you feel comfortable, I would say go for it but always pay very close attention to your intuition.

6- Talk to as many people as you can

Alaska is the kind of destination that attracts the coolest travelers. As a bonus, it also has super interesting locals.

I met so many fascinating people, like a guy that walked (!!!) from California to the Artic Circle, a man that was planning on self-isolating in Alaska for over a year, a 75-year-old lady that had been canoeing the rivers in Alaska for more than two months…. the list goes on.

Make sure to be open to getting to know amazing people on your trip.

hostel in seward alaska

7- Where you stay is important

There are many different types of accommodation in Alaska, from camping to hostels to Airbnb’s and even fancy hotels.

It really depends on your budget and what you are looking for.

For me, in Anchorage, the best option was to volunteer at a hostel since I wanted to meet other travelers and have a place to call home base (and I do recommend Base Camp Hostel 100%).

In Seward, I stayed at Moby Dick Hostel and it was affordable and comfortable. The hostel is fairly small but very home-like feeling and is social in a low-key way. Also, the location is excellent.

Denali National Park

In Denali, I stayed at Denali Hostel & Cabins , one of the nicest hostels I have ever stayed at. The hostel is located about 15 minutes outside of the park and the staff was lovely.

The hostel is in fact made up of different wooden cabins and so, so nice. The rooms were beautiful, they had tons of bathrooms and a big nice kitchen to cook in. Highly recommend it!

Wrangell – St. Elias National Park

I camped at a campground located right at the end of the road in McCarthy. It was called Base Camp and it was okay. The sites were really spread out so we had a lot of privacy and the views of the river were pretty.

chugach state park alaska

8- How long should you stay in Alaska?

I might be a little biased, but I would say: as long as you can!

I was there for one month and it was not enough time, even though I feel like I packed a lot into that month.

There is so much to see and do in Alaska – from glaciers to national parks to small towns – that you could easily spend weeks or months exploring. The state is really huge and there are so many wonderful places to visit.

9- Best places to go on a solo trip to Alaska

Now we have gotten to the hard part: narrowing it down to just a few places.

There are so many incredible places to visit in Alaska, but here are a few of the favorites that I think are perfect for a solo trip:

Denali National Park is home to the highest peak in North America and also has an abundance of wildlife, including grizzly bears, caribou, wolves, and moose.

The park is absolutely massive (6 million acres!) so there is plenty of room to explore.

If you are looking for some serious wilderness adventure, head to Wrangell – St. Elias National Park.

There are glaciers, mountains, valleys, and even Kennicott, an abandoned copper mining town.

Seward might be my favorite city in Alaska. It is located on the Kenai Peninsula and has a beautiful harbor, great restaurants, and bars, and is the gateway to some of Alaska’s most gorgeous hikes.

Valdez is a small city located in Prince William Sound. It is surrounded by mountains and glaciers and is the perfect place to go for some outdoor adventure.

There are plenty of hikes and kayaking/ rafting excursions available.

glacier in alaska

Kenai Fjords National Park

Kenai Fjords National Park is located just outside of Seward and is one of the most beautiful places in Alaska.

The park is full of glaciers, mountains, and wildlife and is a great place to go for some hiking and kayaking.

Talkeetna is often used as a base for exploring Denali National Park, but it is a great destination in its own right.

This small town has a cool vibe and many cute shops and cafes.

Hope is a small town located in the Chugach Mountains. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery and is the perfect place to go for some camping and exploring.

Homer is a city located on the Kenai Peninsula. It is known for its amazing views of Kachemak Bay and for being a great place to go fishing.

These are just a few of the places that I think are perfect for a solo trip to Alaska. There are of course many other amazing places to visit, but these are some of my personal favorites and the ones I got to explore.

helicopter tour in alaska

10- Some bucket list experiences are worth the money

If you can afford it, there is no shortage of incredible, bucket list-worthy experiences to have in Alaska.

These are some of the ones that I think are worth the splurge:

  • Denali Experience Flightseeing Tour from Talkeetna
  • Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour
  • Kenai Fjords National Park Glacier & Wildlife Cruise
  • Alaska Helicopter and Glacier Dogsled Tour
  • 26 Glacier Cruise and Coach from Anchorage (so beautiful!)
  • Majestic Misty Fjords Seaplane Tour
  • Incredible Aurora Viewing Adventure

I know they are expensive, but I honestly think it’s worth every penny.

These are other more budget-friendly incredible experiences to have:

  • Backcountry camping in Denali National Park
  • Hiking Harding Icefield
  • Hiking in Chugach State Park
  • Flattop Mountain in Anchorage
  • Trying authentic reindeer sausage
  • Exploring Kennicot in St. Elias National Park

11- Prepare for hiking solo in Alaska

A lot of people will tell you to not hike solo in Alaska, and if you meet people and have company that is definitely better.

However, if you are experienced and comfortable hiking solo, then I say go for it! There are so many incredible places to hike in Alaska and it would be a shame to miss out on them because you don’t have anyone to go with.

Of course, be sure to take all the necessary precautions like always taking bear spray, enough water, and letting friends and family know what you are doing and where.

Also, it is essential to get informed on how to act if you encounter wildlife like bears, moose, and wolves. This video by REI on what to do if you run into a bear is very good!

12- Pack smart

Depending on what you plan on doing, packing for Alaska is no easy task. I would say, however, that these are essentials:

  • Rain jacket
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Camping gear and food

10 Tips for Solo Cruising with Carnival

Are you searching for an epic solo cruising adventure? You’ve come to the right place! Some folks have more fun traveling with a group, and that’s totally okay. But for those who are looking for a little alone time, those who relish a chance to chart their own course and embrace the spirit of wanderlust with no compromise, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to an adventure with a Carnival cruise vacation.

Carpe that diem and plan a trip that’s all about the most important person in your life: you. Get started below with our complete guide to cruising solo with Carnival.

Our Tips for Solo Cruising

Travel anxiety? Never heard of her! As you begin to plan your Carnival cruise journey, these easy tips are sure to keep the planning stress at bay.

  • Don’t Be Afraid to Expand Your Horizons

When you take a solo Carnival cruise, you step out of your comfort zone and enter a completely new world of possibility. And trust us when we say that stepping out of your comfort zone has never felt so…comfortable! Whether you’re trying new foods, letting yourself wander through unforgettable destinations or kicking back and learning to enjoy your own delightful company, a solo cruise is the perfect way to build your sense of empowerment, confidence and independence, all while having the time of your life.

  • Travel Solo, But Not Alone

This might sound backwards, but just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone! From the moment you step onboard a Carnival vacation, you’ll be joined by fellow adventurers from all corners of the world. Don’t let the idea of traveling solo hold you back from meeting new people and making life-long connections. Onboard, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for meeting other travelers, whether you’re striking up a conversation at the RedFrog Rum Bar or teaming up for trivia night. Pro tip: most times, it’s as easy as saying “hello.”

  • Remember: You Control the Pace

When you’re master of your own voyage, you have total freedom to thrive. The itinerary, food, activities—you name it, it’s all up to you. Think less compromising, and more doing whatever strikes your fancy, whenever you want. Follow your own desires and tailor every single moment to your liking— who’s going to stop you? Don’t forget to relax and build some down time into your schedule. Whether you want to chill by the pool or even watch one of our Dive-In Movies at Carnival Seaside Theater™, You won’t want to miss a second of all the sweet relaxation you’re in for!

  • Stay Informed with Plenty of Research

Before you set sail, arm yourself with knowledge about your destination. From local customs to must-visit hotspots, a little research goes a long way in ensuring smooth sailing on your solo adventure! Whether you’re exploring a bustling metropolis or a serene island town, it’s never a bad idea to have a foundational understanding of the traditions, culture, history and etiquette of the place you’re visiting. It’s also a good idea to research your ship’s layout, dining options and entertainment venues before you set off; this will allow you to navigate with ease and get a rough idea of what you want to do, see and experience.

  • Be a Safe & Smart Traveler

Traveling solo means traveling safe and smart! The first step to solo safety is keeping your loved ones in the loop by sharing your itinerary and staying in touch throughout your journey. Provide them with essential details like port and excursion information, and check-in often. Don’t share any sensitive information with strangers and be vigilant about your surroundings! Whether you’re deciding which excursion to join or striking up a conversation with a fellow traveler, don’t forget to trust your instincts and intuition. Your inner compass is there to guide you, and staying in tune with it will allow you to sail on with confidence and peace of mind.

  • Practice Doing Things by Yourself

Cruising alone doesn’t come naturally to all of us, and doing things with just yourself for company can feel a little strange at first. So… why not practice first? Before embarking on your cruise, get used to being by yourself, if you aren’t already an independent adventurer. Treat yourself to a solo spa day, go see a movie, take a cooking class or read in the park; these pre-cruise activities will prepare and empower you for an unforgettable solo trip on the high seas.

  • Make Friends with the Carnival Crew

The friendly faces of Carnival’s staff aren’t just here to make sure you have a great time; they’re also your partners in fun, your guides to the best adventures, and honorary members of every vacation squad. Yes, even yours! Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with the service desk attendant, or ask your bartender to show you their best dance move. With irresistible charm and insider tips you won’t find anywhere else, our staff is here to turn your journey into an unforgettable occasion.

  • Sign Up for Shore Excursions

Shore excursions are the perfect way for a solo cruiser to explore a new destination, with none of the stress! Every Carnival destination features unique excursions that cater to every interest you could imagine. AKA, you can lean into the things you love, or explore something new! Cultural excursions can introduce you to the flavors, people, history and art of a region, letting you soak in all that delicious local flavor.

If you want to get your adrenaline-pumping, adventure excursions are guaranteed to leave you with windswept hair and memories that’ll last a lifetime. Take a helicopter over glaciers in Alaska, zipline through the rainforest in Puerto Vallarta or take a jet ski adventure through the crystal blue waters of the Bahamas, all while meeting thrill seekers from around the world.

  •  Explore Group Activities Onboard

A Carnival cruise vacation is the perfect setting to try something new, and our onboard activities have something for every pace and taste! If you’re looking to be entertained, stop by The Punchliner Comedy Club , kick back poolside with Dive-In Movies , soak up the onstage drama with Playlist Productions or experience other fun-filled entertainment options. Ready to get active with your new favorite pastime? Check out Pickleball and square up against some other active cruisers, or bond over BBQ while you learn new cooking skills at the Carnival Kitchen .

Best Cruises for Solo Travelers

Like we said before: when you’re cruising solo, the only person you have to please is yourself. That means total freedom of choice! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves— we have to start at the beginning: choosing a destination. Traveling by yourself means the entire map is yours to explore, which is admittedly a lot of pressure. That being said, you know we’re here to help.

You can’t go wrong by setting off on a Carnival cruise vacation in late March-April over Spring Break; whether you’re dreaming of lounging on pristine beaches or exploring faraway regions, Carnival has it all. Whether you’re looking to unwind by the pool, enjoy live music and shows, or try your luck at the casino, there’s never a dull moment on board.

We talked to our destination gurus, and they used their personal experiences and industry knowledge to suggest some of the top destinations and best cruises for solo travelers:

  • Alaska – For nature, adventure and wildlife enthusiasts, there’s no better destination than Alaska. A cruise here will provide more once-in-a-lifetime experiences than you can count, whether you enjoy them on your own or with a group.
  • Canada and New England – Looking for untouched landscapes, delicious seafood and endless scenic views? A Canada and New England itinerary may be just the cruise for you. Did someone say photo op ? This scenic and peaceful corner of the world is also known for being welcoming and safe— perfect for solo cruising.
  • Caribbean and Bahamas – The Caribbean and Bahamas were made for cruising, and offer the quintessential solo cruiser experience. Even better, you can experience Carnival’s private destination islands, including Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays , to enjoy a number of fun activities with other Carnival cruisers! Celebration Key , coming in summer 2025, will have five distinct “portals,” including options for every type of solo traveler! Stay tuned for more info on this Carnival-exclusive destination.
  • Mexico – Home to a friendly local scene and vibrant cultural experiences, Mexico is an ideal spot for solo cruisers to experience. With a number of itineraries available, you can decide whether you want to experience the Pacific charm of the west-coast Riviera or east-coast Caribbean and its island magic.

One last question for you: why settle for an unremarkable spring break when you could have the solo adventure of a lifetime? Just think about it! After you’re done thinking, head over to our booking page (aka, where the magic happens). It’s solo cruise o’clock! Click here to buy your tickets.

Does anyone know of any cruise to Alaska from Vancouver that caters a little more for the solo traveller? Or if indeed anyone has experience in perhaps negotiating a decrease in the 100% supplement? Thanks!

' class=

If you wait for last-minute specials (i.e. under 6 weeks before departure) I have seen prices drop below $400/week even for this season already. If this is the case, then under $800/week is not bad at not much more than $100/day including food, transportation and lodging.

alaska cruise solo traveler

Another thought is to just keep checking pricing. The cruise lines will often start with the full 100% supplement, but if the ship is not filling, will sometimes drop prices for singles. There is no guarantee this will happen, so don't plan on it, but keep watching and you may get lucky.

Another thought is to look at NCL. Some of their ships have a very few single cabins.

Good luck!!! Alaska is a truly awesome place to visit.

Thanks for letting me know about the taxes happytraveler49. Lets hope the cruise ships for September are not too busy by the end of June and they start dropping their prices!! :)

Have you had any luck in sourcing a reasonably priced trip?

Thanks for the help. I will keep trying for a last minute deal and will try contacting the comapnies direct. I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again

Maybe I have been so used to travelling with another person (married for 52 years) but couldn't you find a friend to share expenses with?

Experience the ultimate treetop adventure and come away with a newfound confidence in your physical abilities, mental fortitude and sheer willpower to push yourself to new heights. Unlike a conventional zipline, this aerial adventure involves swinging ropes, balance bridges and daring climbs into the tree canopy. An orientation and practice run on the ground will help prepare you for the fun and challenges that lie ahead. Afterwards, you will warm up on the easy Squirrel Course, move on to the moderate Fox Course and then pull yourself along a rope while hanging upside-down high above the forest floor on a Tyrolean Traverse. That’s the Bear Course. With your confidence now soaring, you will be ready for the high-flying Eagle Course, which ends in the treetops 50 feet above the ground. The descent will be just as exhilarating as you soar down at a goose bump-producing speed on a “quick flight” cable.

• Different than zipline experiences, this aerial adventure will have you swinging, scrambling, and climbing through multiple elements. • Climb high into the tree canopy by negotiating a series of aerial courses. • Prepare for the ultimate challenge by warming up on easier aerial courses. • Learn to increase your balance, climb more confidently and use a Tyrolean Traverse. • Enjoy literal bird’s-eye views of the forest from high above. • Gain newfound confidence in your abilities to meet new challenges.

HELPFUL HINTS

• Dress in weather-appropriate clothing. • Wear flat comfortable walking shoes.
