Sony Pictures Studios Tour

Back in the early days of movie-making, MGM Studios made its home in Culver City, producing legendary films like The Wizard of Oz , National Velvet and Singin' in the Rain . They produced as many as 52 films a year on two lots near Jefferson Avenue and Overland.

Over the years, the studio had many owners, but the most recent act of the old film giant's Culver City studio began in 1989 when Sony bought Columbia Pictures and formed Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Sony poured hundreds of millions into renovating the buildings and facilities, eventually naming their venture Sony Pictures Studios. Today, the studio mostly records television shows, but you can still visit the lot for a dose of movie history.

Sony Studios has a fascinating history and you may enjoy the real working studio atmosphere better than the theme park-style studio tour at Universal. However, their tour goes to fewer parts of the studio than Warner Bros or Paramount, and it involves a lot of walking.

Tips for Enjoying the Sony Pictures Studios Tour

Have the right expectations so that you won't be disappointed. You probably won't see a big-name movie star. In fact, you'll be lucky to see a minor one. And you definitely won't get to watch a movie being made. What you will see is the inside of a working film studio, your experience based on the day's activities.

If you're a big fan of the Wizard of Oz , don't expect to see much. While the film was done on no less than six stages, none of them contains a shred of the old sets and even if you get inside, it will look more or less like a large warehouse.

  • To improve the chances of having a great tour, avoid the summer and end-of-year holidays when many shows are not working.
  • If you're visiting several Hollywood attractions on the same day, you can save money on the Sony Tour if you  buy a GoCard online in advance. You can also use the card to tour Warner Bros. Studios.
  • You'll walk 1.5 to 2 miles on your tour, much of it outdoors. You'll also climb a few steps to get into the game show sets.
  • Dress for the weather and be aware that a cloudy morning in Culver City often becomes a very hot, sunny day a few hours later.
  • If you have small children under the age of 12, this is not the tour for them and children aged 12- 17 must be accompanied by an adult.
  • Sony checks ID for anyone who's old enough to have one, so everyone should bring theirs.
  • Sony says on their website that no cell phones, video or sound recording is allowed during the tour - and they mean it. But don't leave your camera at home because of it. You can take pictures in the lobby and at selected spots if allowed by your tour guide.
  • They ask you to arrive at least thirty minutes before your tour time, which will give you just enough time to look around the mini-museum in the lobby before your tour starts.

Sony Pictures Studio Tour Options

Sony gives several tours daily, Monday through Friday only ( check current hours ). They also give twilight tours on summer Thursdays. However, the studio doesn't work on weekends and they don't give tours, either. Reservations are required. You can  buy your tickets online .

If you're willing to pay the price, you can try their VIP Lunch Tour, a three-hour tour that avoids the walking. Instead, you travel by golf cart, eat a meal at the Commissary and get into the Sony museum

Tour offerings change frequently. Check the Sony Studio Tour website for current information.

What Happens on the Sony Pictures Studio Tour

The tour leaves from the Sony Pictures Productions office building. While you're waiting, someone will take your photo in front of a green screen to create a souvenir photo you'll pick up at the end. The tour starts with a 15-minute film montage about the studio history.

Highlights of the tour:

  • The studio's Oscars collection is on display in the headquarters lobby.
  • Depending on production schedules, you may visit the sets for Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. One of these is almost always open, and sometimes both are.
  • You'll also visit a few sound stages. Which ones depend on what's going on and what your tour guide can get you into.
  • Near the end of the tour, you'll get a chance to visit the gift shop. If you're in the market for mugs, t-shirts, hats and the like, you'll find some here that you can't get anywhere else.

About the Game Shows

The long-running game shows "Jeopardy!" and "Wheel of Fortune" are both produced at Sony Studios. When they're making new episodes, they shoot six of them per day, three in the morning and three in the afternoon. When they are shooting, the studio tour can't get inside their set. However, the two shows work on alternating schedules, so one set is usually open on every tour.

If you have your heart set on visiting a specific show's set, take a tour on a day when they're not working. Do your homework to find out when that is.  Check the Jeopardy website  and the Wheel of Fortune website for their schedule by beginning the process of getting tickets to be in their studio audience.

If you want to see how the game show is done from end to end, choose a day when they are working and use these tips to get tickets to be in their studio audience . It's also possible to make a day of it at Sony, being in the audience for half a day and touring the studio, too.

Getting There

10202 West Washington Blvd Culver City, CA Sony Pictures Studio Tour website

In the past, guests met at the headquarters at Sony Pictures Plaza, but now you should enter the Overland gate on Overland Ave between Culver and Washington Blvd instead. Valet parking is free.

Sony Studios is in Culver City, southeast of the intersection of Washington and Culver. Visit the Sony website to see a map and get directions.

As is common in the travel industry, the writer was provided with a complimentary tour for the purpose of reviewing the Sony Studio Tour. While it has not influenced this review, Tripsavvy.com believes in full disclosure of all potential conflicts of interest.

Average Review

While we were in California for vacation, we toured Sony, Warner Bros. and Universal Studios. All three were different experiences, but I thoroughly enjoyed our Sony tour. As opposed to the other two, Sony is a complete walking tour, which I liked because you could stop and look in the individual studios rather than riding by on a tram. Our guide, Keith "Coogan" Mitchell was excellent. I wished I'd realized who he was before we left because I liked his movies back in the '80s (Adventures in Babysitting, Toy Soldiers, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead). Obviously he knew a lot about the industry and was very informative. My favorite part of the tour was visiting the set of The Goldberg's. We love that show and it was so cool to actually walk through their "home" where it's filmed. We had the LA Go Card to visit a variety of places around L.A. and we had no issues using it for this tour. We even called ahead and scheduled our visit, which I suggest doing. Great studio tour and I highly recommend it to anyone. Full Review

When I visited LA, I bought the LA Go Pass which allowed me to go to a bunch of LA tourist things, including this studio tour and the WB Studio tour. It may have included another one, but I didn't get to it. I enjoyed this studio tour the best, because it was extremely laid back. I went on a weekday morning in January, and it was just me, my husband, another guy, and our tour guide. Full Review

I am planning to take my son on this tour for his birthday this coming January. He is a huge Spider-Man fan. Since Sony has the movie rights for Spider-Man, will this tour be worth it?

When I took the tour back in 2015 we were not shown anything from Spider-Man. The only backlot I know of used for Spider-Man is at WB but even then it's such small moments that it isn't worth the tour just for that. But if he likes other super hero… more

The Sony Pictures Studio Tour was a lot of fun. I got to see a lot of memorabilia from Spider-Man & Breaking Bad as well as other movies and shows. The whole tour did take a couple of hours but you lose track of time. I would honestly recommend.

sony picture tour

My first time doing the Sony Pictures Studio Tour. I don't recommend it for the following reasons: not very organized, they make walk around the studio instead of using a car. They have a host who walk you around. Our host seemed always in a hurry. The don't let you go into a lot of the stages and the one they take you too are really not that interesting. I'm a big Breaking Bad fan, and they have the van and mr. White's can on lot, but they barely gave us any time to see it. Free valet parking. At the end of the tour they take you to the gift shop store and give you only 10 minutes to shop and leave and the guide will be there watching you until you finish. The tour is about 2 hours and you can bring your own water or buy from a vending machine in the parking lot. Bring water because once the tour start they will not give you water or allow you to buy it and since the majority of the tour is outside and on foot, you will get thirsty. In comparison to the Warner Brothers Studio tour, the WB tour is more fan and you get to see more interesting movie memorabilia.

Great tour. Lots of tv and movie history took place at this site. Guide (Keith Coogan) was great, knowledgable and entertaining.

Great Tour. Saw and learned a ton. Was amazed to see the sound studios and set of wheel of fortune.

This is great for hardcore movie historians. This is not for families looking for amusement rides or child entertainment. We did the VIP Tour which I believe is worth it, very personalized experience based on what is available to see the day of. You will learn some very interesting facts regarding the studio lot history and great anecdotes from shows that have and are being filmed here. It's a rather small movie lot compared to other movie studios but the content and history is here. We got to walk onto tv show sets learn a lot about movie soundstages, follies and recoding technologies. We weren't able to go inside the sound recording studios on our day. With our VIP tour we got to have lunch on the "executive" side of the in house restaurant. The menu was limited but it was delicious. It was so cool to sit amongst the people who make movies and shows happen. This is a real working studio and the vibes are very Hollywood. I would recommend it to anyone who loves Hollywood history, not for kids Under 12 they will get bored in my opinion. 3 hour tour is fun!

Hello--wanted to let you know how disappointed we were in our studio tour yesterday. We went back and forth about which one was the best and based on the description on website we chose Sony. It did not match up at all to our experience. For $50 each (there were 4 of us) for a 2 hour tour, we started by browsing props and costumes mostly from Spider-Man films (and oh yeah, a replica of the Seinfeld set...)on our own for probably 15 or 20 minutes, then went to a "screening room" to see a promotional film that wasted more time. When we finally headed out to the lot, we saw empty sound stages and closed doors. A trapdoor that was purportedly used in Wizard of Oz was a far cry from seeing a piece of the actual yellow brick road (mentioned on your site). There were a few vehicles from random films and TV shows but nothing notable. The only aspect I enjoyed was seeing the old architecture from the MGM era and frankly there wasn't much focus on that. Not too exciting or even interesting to see the empty Jeopardy set covered in tarps. All told, we would have been better off using the $ to go to the Academy Museum (and would still be $100 richer ) or frankly anything else. Shame on Sony for milking tourists--we were had!

Short cute tour.... I purchased a Groupon for LA pass and Sony Pictures Studio Tour was one of the attractions. I've called in advanced and reserved a tour for my extended family of eight. The receptionist took our Groupon codes over the phone and our information and indicated that we'll need to sign a waiver for kids to be admitted on the tour. Apparently, there may be some inappropriate features for kids. I have two kids ages 12 and 9 and was completely fine with this so I had said we'll sign the waiver upon arrival. With that said, our reservation was booked. On the day of arrival, my husband received a phone call (while we were parking our vehicle in their parking deck) that they do not honor Groupon tickets for the kids and that we needed to pay. I was utterly upset at that moment because this was not mentioned when we had booked the reservation. If I had know that there's an additional fee, I would have opt to visit the Warner Bros. studio tour instead. Long story short, after complaints and demanding to speak to general manager, they "decided" not to charge us. Honestly, the money is one small thing. It's the expectancy from their staff who where not properly trained and should have told us initially when our reservation was made. I tried not to let the incident ruin tour. Overall, it was a short tour but we were able to see some backstage, tv show screen settings, and where wheel of fortune is filmed, sound room. The tour was about 80 minutes long and this includes the stop into the gift shop.

We have been on all the major studios tours. Sony was our favorite. The tour includes actual sets of current shows and props from popular shows. We had the awesome fortune of having Keith Coogan (don't tell Mom the babysitter's dead, adventures in babysitting, etc) host the tour.

Photo of Metrowest Foodie M.

The post Covid version of this tour is lame. You start in a very tiny museum for about 15 min. Then for most of the tour you're outside looking in at very large sound stages with not a whole lot going on except construction. At one point you're allowed into The Goldberg's set which is barely in tact. Then it's more views of sound stages from the outside (all under construction) where the tour guide tells you what has happened in some of those lots. Before being dumped into the Sony store you get to see a sound effects room which is dirty and dusty and pointless unless someone is actually in there working. Before Covid you could visit the sets of Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune and it was way more hands on. This was boring.

Sony Pictures Studios / MGM Studios

Sony Pictures (aka Columbia Tristar) has created an excellent website as a celebration of it’s history and a resource to find out more about Sony / Columbia / MGM history, and the movie business in general.

Check out the  Sony Pictures Museum  at  http://www.sonypicturesmuseum.com/

Address:  10202 West Washington Blvd, Culver City, CA 90232

There are some companies resident on the Sony lot;

  • J.C. Backings  make highly detailed scenic backings (to be positioned outside set windows on soundstages to make it look like a real building)
  • Happy Madison  is the production company owned and run by Adam Sandler. He drives a Cadillac Escalade golf cart around the lot. As well as production offices, there’s also a Happy Madison Baseball Court on the lot for relaxation. The company is named after two of Sandler’s successes Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison.

Sony Pictures VIP Tour

The Sony tour is entirely on foot, and takes you from the Sony Pictures Plaza building through the gates of the former MGM Culver City lot, past the Thalberg building and in amongst the soundstages. Unfortunately photography is limited once you get into the bulk of the studio, but there’s still lots to see, and very informative and enthusiastic guides. Although many MGM and Columbia movies are mentioned, the emphasis is very much on the current owners of the studio and their recent redevelopment of the studio. Columbia and MGM history is of course mentioned, but there’s so much to get through, a 2 hour tour can barely scratch the surface. Where possible, guests are taken into the studios where game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! are taped, along with at least one other soundstage visit. Other visits  may  include a New York Street backlot set behind Stage 12, a Foley Stage and the Barbra Streisand Scoring Stage, when there is no production work taking place in those areas.

What steps is Sony Pictures taking in the U.S. to reduce the depiction of tobacco use in its films? Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is committed to reducing depictions of tobacco use in the films produced by the company or any wholly-owned film division.

SPE has adopted a standard protocol to identify, and where appropriate and feasible, eliminate portrayals of tobacco use.

In particular, there will be a working presumption that youth-rated films produced and distributed in the United States shall not feature depictions of tobacco use unless there is a compelling creative justification that may include, but is not limited to, factors such as historical accuracy or an important tie to the creative context of the project and vision of the filmmaker.

SPE will continue its existing policy of not entering into product placement arrangements in connection with the depiction of tobacco products. As part of the commitment to this long-standing ban, SPE will, on a going forward basis, indicate in the end credits of films with tobacco depictions that no product placement arrangement was made.

With regard to film acquisitions, co-productions, and films produced and distributed outside of the United States, Sony Pictures Entertainment may have limited influence over the content. In these instances, SPE will discourage depictions of tobacco use where reasonable and practical.

And finally, Sony Pictures Entertainment strongly supports the continued use of a smoking descriptor in a youth-rated film's MPAA rating so that consumers can make an informed choice when deciding whether a film is appropriate.

Take a look at this year’s winning images in the Sony World Photography Awards 2024

A French photographer has scooped the most prestigious prize at this year’s Sony World Photography Awards for a documentary project about the sterilization of women in Greenland .

Juliette Pavy was named as the overall winner of the annual competition at a ceremony in London on Thursday for her series entitled “Spiralkampagnen: Forced Contraception and Unintended Sterilisation of Greenlandic Women.”

Now in its 17th year, the Sony World Photography Awards celebrates powerful images that resonate with audiences around the world. Pavy’s winning portfolio set out to chart the severe and lasting impact of the Danish authorities’ involuntary birth control campaign in Greenland in the 1960s and 1970s, which affected several thousand Inuit women, some as young as 12.

Pavy, who received a cash prize of $25,000, was selected from the winners of the competition’s 10 professional categories. Her submission won the documentary category. Other professional categories include sport, the environment and portraiture.

In a press release issued ahead of the event, Monica Allende, chair of the 2024 jury, said of Pavy’s win: “The Sony World Photography Awards jury lauded Juliette Pavy’s empathetic portrayal of her subjects, capturing them in a manner that is both dignified and profoundly intimate, thereby highlighting her exceptional talent.”

Liam Man, a landscape photographer from the UK, was announced as the competition’s Open Photographer of the Year for his otherworldly shot (pictured above) entitled “Moonrise Sprites over Storr.”

It depicts the Old Man of Storr rock formation on Scotland’s Isle of Skye, taken late at night during a powerful blizzard.

A series about the landscape, wildlife and people of the Gila Wilderness in southwestern New Mexico garnered American photographer Kathleen Orlinsky the Sustainability prize. A regular contributor to National Geographic and The New York Times, Orlinsky has spent the past decade documenting the impact of the climate crisis.

Student photographer of the year went to Kayin Luys from Belgium, who interpreted the brief — which was simply entitled “Home” — to submit an intimate portrayal of his partner’s family.

Meanwhile, 15-year-old Daniel Murray’s photograph of a solitary surfer on an empty beach in Cornwall, England earned him the youth photographer of the year accolade.

Internationally acclaimed photographer Sebastião Salgado received the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize for his distinctive black-and-white works, captured over his five-decade-long career. Forty pictures taken by Salgado, who divides his time between his homeland of Brazil and France, will be on show as part of an exhibition featuring the work of the competition winners, finalists and others shortlisted at London’s Somerset House this spring.

The show will also feature work by last year’s overall winner, Edgar Martins from Portugal.

Last year’s competition attracted controversy when a German artist rejected the prize for the creative open category after revealing that his entry was generated by AI.

In its guidelines, the competition’s organizers state that entries “may feature manipulation, but where Entries are manipulated, the extent of which must be described in the image description section when submitting.” Computer-generated images are not allowed, however.

Spiralkampagnen: Forced Contraception and Unintended Sterilisation of Greenlandic Women by Juliette Pavy (France): Overall winner photographer of the year, first place documentary projects Naja Lyberth, a psychologist in Nuuk, was one of the first to testify about her forced sterilization, first on her personal case in 2019, in the local newspaper. She then brought together female victims by creating a Facebook group in 2022, following revelations of the existence of a Danish policy of forced sterilization. “We have the right to have our own body and human right to have children. »

Zero Hunger: Maurizio Di Pietro, Italy (Third place, environment)

Zero Hunger: Maurizio Di Pietro, Italy (Third place, environment) The aim of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2 is to create a world that is free of hunger by 2030 and focus on finding sustainable solutions to stop world hunger. Currently, the natural resources necessary for human survival are depleting due to climate change. Extreme weather, such as droughts and floods, have become more common and affect harvests, leading to less food for human consumption. However, breeding and eating insects is a sustainable practice that can help us reach our goal. Insects are rich in proteins and highly sustainable, with minimal environmental impact in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and water and soil consumption. As a result, researchers are studying the most sustainable and cost-effective ways to promote the use of insects as a food source for both people and animals.

The rules are simple and there is hardly any trickery involved, as speed, good fingers and concentration are all that’s required. Portraits and Landscapes: Jorge Mónaco, Argentina (First place, portfolio)

Portraits and Landscapes: Jorge Mónaco, Argentina (First place, portfolio) These images are part of various personal projects, some of which detach from the main body and function as independent pieces. My focus is on sincerity and authenticity, inviting the viewer to delve into the intimate stories of the protagonists. Additionally, some of my projects take place outdoors, providing sociological contexts that enrich the visual narrative. My goal is to create projects that shed light on the lives of people from minority groups, whether they are ethnic, religious or gender-related. Through my images, I aim to raise awareness and promote inclusion, offering a reflective perspective on human diversity. Within this collection are works belonging to an ongoing project that explores the ‘intermediate landscape’; environments situated between the urban and the natural, usually located on the outskirts of cities. These strips of territory typically appear ambiguous or undefined.

The Sacrifice Zone: Eddo Hartmann, Netherlands (First place, landscape)

The Sacrifice Zone: Eddo Hartmann, Netherlands (First place, landscape) This series explores a remote area of Kazakhstan known as The Polygon, which was once home to the Soviet Union’s major nuclear testing facilities. Between 1949 and 1989 more than 450 nuclear tests took place here, with little regard for their effect on the local people and environment. The location is still heavily contaminated and can only be accessed in protective clothing. The images in this series were made using an infrared camera, which hints at the radioactive menace that is invisible to the human eye

LGBTQIA Refugees, Fleeing Uganda: Brent Stirton, South Africa (Second place, documentary projects)

LGBTQIA Refugees, Fleeing Uganda: Brent Stirton, South Africa (Second place, documentary projects) Lady Tina, in the wig, and Pretty Peter are trans women who fled harsh anti LGBT laws in Uganda and now live in a safe house in Nairobi, Kenya. They live with other trans woman and keep a low profile, only dressing as women within the privacy of the house and only very occasionally going out like that to a sympathetic bar. Both Pretty and Tina were jailed for their trans lifestyle and experienced sexual assault in prison, Lady Tina is waiting to be resettled in Toronto, Canada and Pretty is still waiting for a decision. Both were betrayed by a fellow trans woman who informed on them to the Ugandan authorities, they were arrested and imprisoned but later released. Ironically, the person who betrayed them was the first gay person to be arrested under Uganda’s draconian new anti LGBT laws and is now in prison serving a very long term.

Spa Culture: Karol Pałka, Poland (Second place, architecture and design)

Spa Culture: Karol Pałka, Poland (Second place, architecture and design) Sony World Photography Awards 2024 (1) Spa Island Although it is small in size, the country of Slovakia is rich in springs of natural healing water. Spa culture has been a part of the Slovakian lifestyle for hundreds of years, and has become part of a secular ritual for some. In 1947 a special balneological congress decided to divide the approximately 50 Slovak spa localities into three categories of importance: international importance, national importance and local importance. This project examines the ways in which the architecture of spas allows those establishments to be spaces of ritual and community.

A Thousand Cuts: Sujata Setia, UK (First place, creative)

A Thousand Cuts: Sujata Setia, UK, (First place, creative) Derived from the ancient Asian form of torture of lingchi (slowly slicing), A Thousand Cuts is an ongoing series of portraits and stories that present a photographic study of patterns of domestic abuse in the South Asian community. Sujata Setia: 'I have borrowed the metaphorical meaning of lingchi to showcase the cyclical nature of domestic abuse. The continuous act of chipping at the soul of the abused is expressed by making cuts on the portrait of the participant, while the prints are made on thin paper to depict the fragility of the s existence. The final artwork is photographed in a tight crop to create a sense of suffocation and absence of room for movement.'

King Without a Throne: Poached or Dehorned: Haider Khan, India (Second place, wildlife and nature)

King Without a Throne: Poached or Dehorned: Haider Khan, India (Second place, wildlife and nature)

Wildfires of Palermo: Jim Fenwick, UK (Second place, landscape)

Wildfires of Palermo: Jim Fenwick, UK (Second place, landscape) Wildfires of Palermo n September 2023 I arrived in Palermo, in the midst of a gripping environmental problem that was unfolding across Sicily. The canvas of the night sky had been transformed into a captivating tableau as the flames from ongoing wildfires painted a surreal and enchanting spectacle. The ethereal glow was a juxtaposition of beauty and devastation.

Suspended Worlds: Eva Berler, Greece (First place, wildlife and nature)

Suspended Worlds: Eva Berler, Greece (First place, wildlife and nature) This project started as an exploration of the world of spider webs, where both time and action are frozen, but it led to a personal journey into my deepest fears and aspirations. As I focused on what was hidden in the webs I became fascinated by the artful random creations that I found; the impermanent worlds that we don’t usually notice. I realised that these worlds resonate with me on a deeper level. They work as metaphors for the hidden lives of the people next to us, who we pass by every day and don’t really know anything about. We all have our private lives that we prefer to keep to ourselves; our personal mystic treasures, our inner selves. These are the innermost places where we can be whatever we choose to be.

Father and Son: Valery Poshtarov, Bulgaria (First place, portraiture)

Father and Son: Valery Poshtarov, Bulgaria, (First place, portraiture) Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria, 2023 In a world that is already growing apart, holding hands becomes a silent prayer – a way to come together again. While posing, fathers and sons hold hands for the first time in years, sometimes decades. It’s a powerful moment, often filled with hesitation or even resistance. This act of intimacy became the project’s main purpose, the photographs being just a mere testament to the long-unspoken love between the men. Spanning cultures, reaching corners of Bulgaria, Georgia, Turkey, Armenia, Serbia and Greece, this project has become a beacon of emotional expression and cultural preservation. It serves as a global stage, encouraging fathers and sons from around the world to join the act. By leaving the narratives behind, these portraits become open to interpretation and I invite viewers to add their own layers of meaning, making us all contributors to this evolving story of humanity.

London Plane Tree: Beth Galton, US (Third place, still life)

London Plane Tree: Beth Galton, US (Third place, still life) Beth Galton: ‘As an artist and a person finding themselves in the later part of life, it has become essential for me to re-evaluate and prioritise how I move through the world. Walking to my studio, I pass a line of London plane trees, and have noticed that they shed their bark. The tree is growing rapidly, and the bark is unable to expand as quickly as the tree enlarges. This fascinating process resonates with me, so I created this photographic series, which consists of cast-off bark with manipulated self-portraits’

Parenthood: Angelika Kollin, Estonia (Third place, portfolio)

Parenthood: Angelika Kollin, Estonia (Third place, portfolio) The nucleus of one’s existence is rooted in family; each person inherently has parents. In our contemporary society, the concept of family has evolved and now integrates and embraces both traditional and new forms. No longer confined to a mere group of individuals sharing blood ties, I believe that family is increasingly becoming a feeling rather than a particular manifestation of form. My photographic exploration examines the myriad forms that a modern-day family can take, uniting them under common and universally sought human emotions: a sense of belonging, love and emotional intimacy.

America’s First Wilderness: Kathleen Orlinsky, US (Winner, sustainability prize)

America’s First Wilderness: Kathleen Orlinsky, US (Winner, sustainability prize) The Mexican grey wolf species is native to the Gila Wilderness region, and almost went extinct until a recovery programme began re-introducing the species into the wild in 1992. Here we see a wolf at the Ladder Ranch in Caballo being placed inside a capture box and muzzled by USFWS biologists. Once inside, the biologists will apply radio collars, check the wolf’s health and administer vaccines, deworming treatment and fluids before the animal is relocated to the wild in Mexico.
