Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our  10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if traveling on the Inca Trail.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQI-rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQI community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQI-travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

The trip was amazing...

The guides were informative and made interesting stops along the way during our transfers. We added the tour of the Sacred Valley and saw the Temple of the Sun, which was a highlight after being at Machu Picchu the previous day. We saw even more of the Inca's amazing architecture and terraces.

More information about peru.

Located on the west coast of South America , Peru is a country that ignites the imagination of travelers worldwide, with its fascinating ancient civilizations, wondrous natural attractions, and iconic monuments. Bordered by Bolivia, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile,  and Brazil, and with a vast coastline along the Pacific Ocean, a tour of Peru is one of the must-do travel experiences. The country has a diverse landscape, stretching from the arid plains of Nazca , where the mysterious Nazca Lines are located, to the high altitude peaks of the Andes. The legacy of the Inca Empire and the remnants of this mighty civilization, preserved in monuments such as Machu Picchu and the Rachqui Ruins, are unmissable sights on a vacation to Peru, along with the colonial architecture of its colorful cities, such as the capital, Lima. Peru encourages visitors to be adventurous, with a multitude of activities on offer, from sailing on Lake Titicaca to trekking in the Sacred Valley . The famous Inca Trail , reserved for the most adventurous of travelers, is perhaps the most famous of all trekking routes, culminating in an ascent to Machu Picchu . One of the region's most prosperous economies, with a huge tourist industry, Peru has become increasingly popular in recent years, with travelers keen to tick its many sights off of their bucket lists.

Nature in Peru

Peru is a megadiverse country, and the sanctuary of many of the world’s species of animal, bird and plant life, including a large number of endemic species. From the Altiplano to the Amazon Basin , the country’s diverse geography and accompanying wildlife makes it a paradise for nature lovers. The Amazon Rainforest in Peru, known for its heavy rainfall and tropical, humid climate, is home to a plethora of weird and wonderful animals species such as the pink river dolphin, found in the Amazon River , jaguars, giant otters, and primates, along with an impressive one-third of the worlds bird species. The national bird is the bizarre Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, whilst the mighty Andean Condor is the highlight of Peru’s Colca Canyon , a deep river canyon in the south of the country where viewpoints such as the Cruz del Condor allowing onlookers to watch the flight of huge Condors , the largest flying bird in the world. The uninhabited Ballestas Islands, located off the coast of the port city of Pisco , is home to large populations of sea lions, pelicans, Peruvian boobies, and Humboldt penguins, and is a popular day-trip destination for travelers on a vacation package to Peru. Aside from the country’s rich wildlife, Lake Titicaca stands out as an incredible natural attraction, owing to its immense size and altitude, securing it the title of the world’s highest navigable body of water and the largest lake in South America. In Andean traditions, it is thought to be the birthplace of the Sun God , and its glistening, reflective waters, which stretch across the border between Bolivia and Peru, are home to numerous floating islands, such as Taquile and Isla del Sol, where traditional communities live and work. Tour packages to Peru all-inclusive offer travelers a chance to discover the great variety of the country’s bountiful nature in one exciting trip.

History of Peru

Peru’s history can be traced back to the 4th century BC and to the ancient societies of the Chavin, Moche, and the Nasca. The most well-known era of Peruvian history came later, in the 15th century with the enigmatic Inca civilization, which emerged as a powerful state in this period. Growing out of their capital in Cusco , this revered civilization started as a small ethnic group of Quechuas , but soon their influence expanded and incorporated their neighbors under the great Emperor Pachacuti . The Inca Empire eventually controlled most of the Andean region, stretching into modern-day Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile,  and Argentina, and are thought to have had a population of approximately 16 million inhabitants, who were encouraged to worship the Sun God, Inti and practice human sacrifice as a means to appease the gods. This mysterious civilization did not last for long, as by 1532, Spanish conquistadors had captured the Inca Emperor in the Battle of Cajamarca , marking the beginning of the end for the Incas. The emperor was later killed and a long conquest ensued, resulting in many deaths for the indigenous community, caused by both disease and warfare. Spanish victory came in 1572 , with colonization and the destruction of much of the culture, monuments, religion, and heritage of the Incas following shortly afterward. Spanish language, culture, and Catholicism replaced the indigenous beliefs and way of life, although even today, populations continue to speak in their native languages, such as Quechua. Most travelers on a  Peru vacation are excited to discover the lost ruins of the Inca Empire , such as Machu Picchu, and to understand the values and traditions of this iconic civilization.

Culture in Peru

With a population of approximately 32 million, made up of a variety of ethnicities, Peru has a diverse culture, ranging from Spanish influences, as seen in the language and architecture, to indigenous traditions as demonstrated in the varied folklore and musical styles and dances, which often include references to ancient beliefs surrounding spirits and the Sun God. The indigenous communities are also well known for their arts and crafts, such as the brightly colored Andean clothing, with their intricate embroidery and vibrant patterns. The different regions of Peru possess their own unique influences and traditions; in the highlands of the Andes you can expect to see folklore displays with flute and drum music, ritualistic dance, and masks, whilst down in the Amazon , tribal influences are more evident. In the coastal cities, there is an obvious Spanish character, both in the cuisine, terraced cafes, and architecture. In contrast, travel through the Sacred Valley and you may feel as if you have been transported back in time, as you pass through the traditional villages of Pisac and Ollantaytambo, with their authentic markets, artisan textile weavers, Quechua- speaking communities and monolithic temple ruins, considered sacred to the inhabitants. Despite the modern feel of the coastal capital of Lima, you are never far from making contact with the ancient traditions and culture of the country’s earliest civilizations.A trip to Peru will allow you to walk in the footsteps of the Inca’s, get up close to some of the world's most diverse and unique wildlife, uncover the secrets of Machu Picchu and the Nazca Lines and realize your dreams of navigating Lake Titicaca. A paradise for the most intrepid travelers, a tour of Peru is a must-do bucket list experience.

What our travelers say about their Peru trips

Travel tips for trips to peru.

Something that makes planning Peru group tours easy (in addition to choosing a guided tour)? It’s a great destination to visit year-round. The best time of year to travel to Peru depends on your preferences. Keep in mind that the seasons are opposite of what we experience here in North America.

Machu Picchu lies in the Andes mountains, where the dry season lasts from April through November, and more rain can be expected from December through March. The rainy season in the Amazon rainforest can stretch a bit longer, from around October through April. The capital city of Lima is known for its mild temperatures and cloudy conditions—it has the most sunshine during December through March.

Guided trips to Peru are a fantastic way to see much of what the destination has to offer. As the third-largest country in South America, it’s full of many sites to discover. Must-visit spots in Peru include everything from ancient ruins that tell stories of past civilizations to sites with scenic views that’ll take your breath away.

Here are a few of our picks for some of the best places to visit in Peru:

Machu Picchu, the spectacular archaeological site and lost city of the Incas

Lake Titicaca, which lies high in the Andes where Peru meets Bolivia

Cuzco, the UNESCO-recognized ancient capital of the Inca Empire

Ollantaytambo, impressive Incan ruins in the heart of the the Sacred Valley

Lima , the colorful capital city that overlooks the Pacific Ocean

The Amazon, where you can explore the lush landscapes and wildlife of the rainforest

Interested in group tours to Peru? One of our expert Tour Consultants can help you get your adventure started!

Getting a taste of Peruvian culture can also be done by sampling its cuisine. When you travel on our tours to Peru, you’ll have the chance to try local specialties at included meals. You’ll find familiar staples such as quinoa, rice, beans, potatoes, and meat in many lunches and dinners—styles of preparation vary as you travel across the country.

A few traditional bites to try on Peru group tours include:

  • Ají de Gallina , a yellow pepper cream sauce served over shredded chicken, olives, and rice
  • Causa , yellow mashed potatoes layered with tuna or chicken
  • Ceviche, raw sea bass marinated with lime and chilies
  • Pisco Sour, a cocktail made with tasty white-grape brandy

On Peru tours at any time of year, prepare for hot and sunny days and the chance for cool temperatures at night. For all of our South America tours , we recommend that you bring loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered, as well as a comfortable pair of walking shoes. You should be prepared to get some steps in as you explore sites like Machu Picchu that are only accessible by foot.

A few other things to toss in your suitcase? Sunglasses, a sun hat, sunscreen, rain gear, and insect repellent. Before you head out on tour, you’ll receive detailed packing information tailored to your specific itinerary. You can also download the Go Ahead Tour Companion App so you can have all the info for your tour right in your pocket!

Welcome to Peru

A shaman's blessing and spiritual insights set the stage for an unforgettable exploration of the Sacred Valley and mysterious Machu Picchu as you uncover the secrets of this ancient land from today's capital, Lima, to its original Incan capital of Cusco, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"lost" machu picchu, exploring mystical machu picchu in peru's sacred valley.

The abandoned Incan "city" of Machu Picchu in Peru's Andes Mountains is a mystery. No one knows for sure why it was built, some 500 years ago – or why it was deserted. In fact, this ancient citadel was hidden from the western world until Hiram Bingham, an archaeologist from Yale University who was searching for other ruins from the empire of the Incas, stumbled upon it by accident in 1911, and dubbed it the "Lost City of the Incas." Maybe you can figure it out as you explore this amazing maze of a place, with what experts guess was a palace, dungeons, and over 100 staircases.

Painting Peruvian pottery

Secrets of ancient artisans at a peruvian pottery studio.

In Peru's Sacred Valley, a visit to a renowned pottery studio reveals some of the hidden meanings behind the sacred symbols that ancient Peruvian artisans used to decorate their creations... and offers you a hands-on opportunity to put your creative spirit to use and paint your own inspired work of ceramic art.

Peruvian Pasos in the Sacred Valley

An equestrian demonstration featuring peruvian pasos.

Elegant Peruvian Paso horses are known for their graceful side-to-side gait, their high spirits, and their luxurious manes. The beauty and poise of these remarkable animals are evident as horsemen put them through their places in a private equestrian demonstration at Wayra Ranch in Peru's Sacred Valley.

Visit the Aymara on Taquile Island

The aymara people welcome you to taquile island.

Amidst the high elevations of Lake Titicaca, naturally formed Taquile Island is home to the Aymara, an indigenous people known for their hand-woven textiles and traditional way of life, which has changed little from that of their ancestors; they live without electricity or vehicles. A traditional lunch and dances await when you visit an Aymara family at home.

Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel

At the gateway to the inca empire.

The only hotel located at the entrance to Machu Picchu, Sanctuary Lodge, A Belmond Hotel, lets you beat the daily crowds that flock to Peru's centuries-old Inca citadel. Sitting in the shadows of the Lost City, this stylish retreat is an oasis of calm before or after a day exploring Machu Picchu. Unwind with a yoga session, take part in a traditional shaman ceremony in the garden, or sip muña tea in Tampu Bar. Tranquility, wonder and beauty are at the heart of the lodge's unique experience.

Marvel at the lines measuring up to 10km (6 mi) in length, yet, remaining perfectly straight. See depictions of birds, insects, and animals only recognizable from the air. Decide for yourself the origin of the lines – who drew the lines, and why, remains a mystery. Current beliefs suggest that they may be part of complex agricultural calendar. Please note that this activity does not include a tourist ticket fee of S/.47 PEN per person, payable directly by each traveller at the airport in Nazca.

Lake Titicaca Kayak Excursion - From $59.00

Begin your journey early in the morning by transfering from the hotel to the port, then head out by motorboat to the base camp at the Peninsula of Capachica, a 2.5 hr trip. Rainbow Mountain Hike - Full-day Trip - From $50.00

Lookout over these colourful Andean mountains striped with maroon, turquoise, lavender, and gold. The sediment, elevation, and proximity to the ocean create a landscape that has to be seen to be believed. Get started early to drive around 2 hours to the starting point of this challenging, yet rewarding full-day hike. Reaching 5,029m (16,500 ft) this 14km hike is no walk in the park, but these unique mountains do not disappoint.

About South America

South America has a variety of mixed culture. Since the arrival of the Europeans in 1492 the population has become extremely diverse. It would be difficult to generalize about one cultural definition of the continent but is known that a large majority have part of their roots from Spain, Portugal, Africa. Because of the Spanish and Portuguese colonization, mestizos (mixed of natives and Spanish or Portuguese) are also in the majority. In the early 1900’s South America received more immigrants Including Italian going to Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. Then more significant arrivals to South America has come from Germany, Libya, China and Japan.

The mix of culture, the great biodiverse wildlife and the big adventure possibilities is what makes South America so unique. South America offers great travel options for the perfect vacation.

In terms of natural beauty, Peru is one of the wealthiest nations in the world. The awesome geographical area, from beaches to snow-capped mountains, has bestowed the country with both cultural and ecological treasures. Within Peru's borders are found 84 of the 104 eco-systems in the world today, and Peru is also recognized as one of the eight most diverse countries on Earth. Peru is also blessed with a rich and ancient past, chronicled by the thousands of archaeological sites that are left from the mighty Inca civilization.

The most important and world-known attraction, Machu Picchu, has been recently designated by National Geographic as the Destination of the Year which means that now more than ever, Peru is in every traveler’s bucket list!

All of us at Peru Holiday Adventures invite you to be our guest and discover the vibrant diversity of this natural, cultural and historical wonder!

Peru Holiday Adventures | Lima International Airport

Traveling to Peru

Peru is located in a privileged geographical area, so when you are traveling internationally to visit Peru, you can enter the country using different means of transportation:

By air , the international point of entry is the Jorge Chavez Airport (LIM). There are more than 30 international airlines flying daily in and out the Lima International Airport and almost all of the Peru Holiday Adventures vacation packages start upon your arrival at the Lima International Airport.

By land , the Panamerican Highway is the main road connecting with Ecuador to the north and with Chile to the South. Bolivia is also a country that connects by land via two internal roads. Some of the Peru Holiday Adventures custom-designed vacation programs include a visit to the Inti Wata Complex and the Valley of the Moon in Bolivia and it is then when after taking our guests across Lake Titicaca we will transit the Desaguadero road all the way to the city of La Paz.

Via the Amazon River , the Peruvian city of Iquitos can be accessed from Colombia and from Brazil. Some of the Peru Holiday Adventures custom-designed vacation programs include an upscale Amazon River Cruise, which might end in Manaos, Brazil, or in Leticia, Colombia.

Via Lake Titicaca , the Peruvian city of Puno can be accessed from Bolivia. Some of the Peru Holiday Adventures custom-designed vacation programs include a visit to the Inti Wata Complex and the Valley of the Moon in Bolivia and it is then when we take our guests across Lake Titicaca.

Via the Pacific Ocean , the Port of El Callao is a busy commercial terminal serving major Cruise Lines, such as Avalon Waterways, Celebrity, Crystal, Holland America, Oceania, Princess Cruises, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Silversea Cruises, and Voyages of Discovery. Many visitors arriving in Lima aboard one of these Cruise Lines, take advantage of the well-organized and value-priced Peru Holiday Adventures shore excursions to Machu Picchu. The Peru Holiday Adventures shore excursions to Machu Picchu are ideal for pre or post cuise and are much more affordable than those sold through the cruise line.

Peru Holiday Adventures | Peru Flight over Nazca

Traveling Within Peru

Peru is a vast territory, the 6th largest country in the Americas, and so are the distances between the main locations and attractions. To travel within Peru, you have several options:

Traveling by Bus

Even though the buses service is reliable and very affordable, if you don’t have time to waste, the best and more efficient way to move around is by plane.

Traveling by Plane

As of today, there are four regular airlines servicing local flights between Lima and the most important locations, such as:

Cusco (airport code: CUZ) for guests interested in visiting: the city of Cusco, Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley of the Incas, Ollantaytambo Fortress, Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park, Pisac, Moray, Maras. Once in Cusco, Peru Holiday Adventures will provide all the surface transportation you might need according to your itinerary: A/C vans for all the sightseeing and excursions and round trip train tickets for your visit to Machu Picchu. For those planning to cross the Andes from Cusco to Lake Titicaca, we will provide Deluxe Bus or Andean Crossing Train one-way ticket.

Arequipa (airport code: AQP) for guests interested in visiting: the city of Arequipa, the Misti Volcano, the Lagoons of Mejia National Sanctuary,  the Colca Canyon and Valley, the Cotahuasi Canyon and Valley, Chivay, the Cross of the Condor. Once in Arequipa, Peru Holiday Adventures will provide all the surface transportation you might need according to your itinerary: A/C vans for all the sightseeing and excursions.

Lake Titicaca (airport code: JUL), for guests interested in visiting the city of Puno, Lake Titicaca, the Uros’ Floating Islands, the Isle of Taquile, the Inti Wata Complex (in the Bolivian side of the lake). The closest airport to Lake Titicaca is located in Juliaca from where you will continue your trip on an A/C van. Once in Juliaca / Puno, Peru Holiday Adventures will provide all the surface transportation you might need according to your itinerary: A/C vans and/or boats for all the sightseeing and excursions.

The Peruvian Amazon in Puerto Maldonado (airport code: PEM), for guests interested in visiting the Southern Amazon Basin and explore Lake Sandoval, Lake Valencia, Manu National Park, the Tambopata National Reserve, the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park, the parrot clay lick in the Macaws Sanctuary, the Tres Chimbadas Oxbow Lake. Once in Puerto Maldonado, Peru Holiday Adventures will provide all the surface transportation you might need according to your itinerary: A/C vans and/or boats for all the sightseeing and excursions.

The Peruvian Amazon in Iquitos (airport code: IQT), for guests interested in visiting the city of Madre de Dios, the port of Iquitos, the TreeHouse Lodge, the Northern Amazon Basin and cruise the Amazon River, or explore the Zungarococha Lake, Padre Cocha Community, Pilpintuwasi Butterfly Farm, the San Andres Boras Ethnic Community, the Allpahuayo–Mishana National Reserve, the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. Once in Iquitos, Peru Holiday Adventures will provide all the surface transportation you might need according to your itinerary: A/C vans and/or boats for all the sightseeing and excursions.

If your vacation program includes a flight over the Nazca Lines , you will start your trip in Lima from where we will provide Premium Bus transportation to Ica, Nazca, and Paracas, including a visit to the Ballestas Islands by boat.

Traveling by Train

Even though the train system is limited to only certain locations, traveling by train in Peru can be an interesting and spectacular experience in its own!

In the southern region of the country, you will have the opportunity to enjoy a scenic train ride when visiting Machu Picchu (Aguas Calientes Train Station) either from Cusco (Poroy Train Station) or from the Sacred Valley of the Incas (Urubamba Train Station and Ollantaytambo Train Station). As there are several categories to choose from, visiting Machu Picchu by train is time wise, the best option. Almost each one of the Peru Holiday Adventures vacation packages in Peru include a visit to the iconic Machu Picchu by train.

The Andean Explorer, the train running between Cusco (Wanchaq Train Station) and Lake Titicaca (Puno Train Station) is a once in a lifetime journey! This train will take you through the unique rugged landscape in the Andes, crossing the Peruvian Altiplano, and stopping at several points of interest. The Andean Explorer Train operates from April to October on: Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and from November to March on: Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. One of our most asked for vacation programs to Peru, the Peru Cultural Celebration , includes the Andean Crossing by Bus; for a more exciting experience, consider upgrading the Andean Crossing Bus with the Andean Explorer Train, it's totally worthy!

Beyond the Picture-Perfect Machu Picchu!

Whether your ideal Peru Holiday Adventure is learning about ancient civilizations and local culture and history, exploring pre-Hispanic ruins and lost cities, trekking along the mystic Andes Mountains, or discovering the Amazon, Peru certainly is the destination where you can fulfill your desires and create memories of-a-lifetime!

Who i s Peru Holiday Adventures?

Peru Holiday Adventures is the Peru-specialized division of EcoAmerica Tours, a tour and travel, destination management company since 1989. After almost three decades of planning and executing vacation programs to selected countries in Latin America:  Belize , Guatemala , Costa Rica , Panama , Ecuador & The Galapagos Islands , Peru & Machu Picchu , Brazi , Chile , Argentina, and Colombia , we certainly are specialists in these exciting destinations and know first-hand what works best to provide our guests with exceptional, enriching, and inspirational travel experiences.

Are the Peru Holiday Adventures vacation packages customizable?

Absolutely! While many travelers prefer to customize their vacations and most of our guests are FITs, there are some who prefer to take advantage of our independent, well organized and value priced Peru vacation packages which allow them to enjoy a hassle-free vacation without worrying about anything else. That is why we take the time pre-designing interesting, fun, and attraction-filled vacation programs. The best part, with no hidden fees!

Are the Peru Holiday Adventures fully escorted tours?

No, all of our Peru vacation programs are locally hosted and guided by certified English-speaking guides.

What are the differences between fully escorted and locally hosted and guided tours?

The most important differences are: the first one is that we guarantee the operation of our vacation packages with a minimum of two guests and in occasions, we operate daily even if there is only one guest; the second is that you can be certain about always receiving personalized service as you won't be sharing with lots of tourists crowded in very large vehicles; and the third one is that you are the one selecting the date for your trip based on when it is more convenient for you and your travel companions.

Why selecting a locally hosted and guided vacation program rather than a fully escorted tour?

Because you are not a tourist. You are a world-class discerning traveler expecting to receive nothing but world-class services! A perfectly planned and flawless executed personalized vacation requires more than merely booking a hotel room .

Stuart Macdonald won the Diners Club Peru Open on Sunday after carding a 1-under 71 in the final round. Macdonald climbs into the No. 3 spot in the Fortinet Cup season-long standings after securing his second career PGA TOUR-sanctioned win at Los Inkas Golf Club.

This is the second time that Macdonald has been victorious in Peru. As an amateur, the Vancouver native won the 29th Lima Golf Club International Amateur Championship in 2017. Macdonald is the first Canadian to win the Diners Club Peru Open since it became a PGA TOUR Sanctioned event in 2012.

Prior to 2024, Macdonald was one of the most consistent performers on PGA TOUR Latinoamerica in 2023. Macdonald did not miss the cut and only finished outside of the top-25 once in eight starts, including a T14 finish at the 2023 Diners Club Peru Open.

Macdonald carried that momentum to PGA TOUR Canada in 2023. In six starts, Macdonald finished with three top-20 finishes and only missed the cut once. Macdonald’s best finish came at the 2023 Commissionaires Ottawa Open, where he defeated Devon Bling and Luke Schniederjans in a playoff to claim his first PGA TOUR-sanctioned win. Macdonald picked up a second top-five finish at the 2023 Windsor Championship, where he finished T2.

Prior to turning professional in 2017, the Vancouver native starred at Purdue University from 2012-16. Macdonald ended his career with the 14th-best scoring average in Purdue program history and finished fourth on the team in top-10s his senior year with four.

Macdonald is expected to be in the field at the Kia Open, the fifth event of the Latin America Swing, which will be hosted at the Quito Tenis y Golf Club from May 2-5 in Quito, Ecuador.

Mexico Tightens Travel Rules on Peruvians in a Show of Visa Diplomacy to Slow Migration to US

Mexico has begun requiring visas for Peruvians in response to a major influx of migrants from the South American country

BOULEVARD, Calif. (AP) — Julia Paredes believed her move to the United States might be now or never. Mexico was days from requiring visas for Peruvian visitors. If she didn't act quickly, she would have to make a far more perilous, surreptitious journey over land to settle with her sister in Dallas.

Mexico began requiring visas for Peruvians on Monday in response to a major influx of migrants from the South American country, after identical moves for Venezuelans, Ecuadorians and Brazilians. It effectively eliminated the option of flying to a Mexican city near the U.S. border, as Paredes, 45, did just before it was too late.

“I had to treat it as a emergency,” said Paredes, who worked serving lunch to miners in Arequipa, Peru, and borrowed money to fly to Mexico's Tijuana, across from San Diego. Last month smugglers guided her through a remote opening in the border wall to a dirt lot in California , where she and about 100 migrants from around the world shivered over campfires after a morning drizzle and waited for overwhelmed Border Patrol agents to drive them to a station for processing.

Senior U.S. officials, speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of top diplomats from about 20 countries in the Western hemisphere this week in Guatemala, applauded Mexico's crackdown on air travel from Peru and called visa requirements an important tool to jointly confront illegal migration.

For critics, shutting down air travel only encourages more dangerous choices. Illegal migration by Venezuelans plummeted after Mexico imposed visa requirements in January 2022, but the lull was short-lived. Last year Venezuelans made up nearly two-thirds of the record-high 520,000 migrants who walked through the Darien Gap, the notorious jungle spanning parts of Panama and Colombia.

More than 25,000 Chinese traversed the Darien last year. They generally fly to Ecuador, a country known for few travel restrictions, and cross the U.S. border illegally in San Diego to seek asylum. With an immigration court backlog topping 3 million cases, it takes years to decide such claims, during which time people can obtain work permits and establish roots.

“People are going to come no matter what,” said Miguel Yaranga, 22, who flew from Lima, Peru's capital, to Tijuana and was released by the Border Patrol Sunday at a San Diego bus stop. He had orders to appear in immigration court in New York in February 2025, which puzzled him because he said he told agents he would settle with his sister on the other side of the country, in Bakersfield, California.

Jeremy MacGillivray, deputy chief of the Mexico mission of the U.N.'s International Organization for Migration, predicts that Peruvian migration will drop “at least at the beginning” and bounce back as people shift to walking through the Darien Gap and to Central America and Mexico.

Mexico said last month that it would require visas for Peruvians for the first time since 2012 in response to a “substantial increase” in illegal migration. Large-scale Peruvian migration to Mexico began in 2022; Peruvians were stopped in the country an average of 2,160 times a month from January to March of this year, up from a monthly average of 544 times for all of 2023.

Peruvians also began showing up at the U.S. border in 2022. The U.S. Border Patrol arrested Peruvians an average of about 5,300 times a month last year before falling to a monthly average of 3,400 from January through March, amid a broad immigration crackdown by Mexico .

Peru immediately reciprocated Mexico's visa requirement but changed course after a backlash from the country's tourism industry. Peru noted in its reversal that it is part of a regional economic bloc that includes Mexico, Chile and Colombia.

Adam Isacson, an analyst at the Washington Office on Latin America, said Peru's membership with Mexico in the Pacific Alliance allowed its citizens visa-free travel longer than other countries.

It is unclear if Colombia, also a major source of migration , will be next, but Isacson said Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador is in a “lovefest” with his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro, while his relations with Peru's government are more strained.

Colombians are consistently near the top nationalities of migrants arriving at Tijuana's airport. Many find hotels before a guide takes them to boulder-strewn mountains east of the city, where they cross through openings in the border wall and then walk toward dirt lots that the Border Patrol has identified as waiting stations.

Bryan Ramírez, 25, of Colombia, reached U.S. soil with his girlfriend last month, only two days after leaving Bogota for Cancun, Mexico, and continuing on another flight to Tijuana. He waited alongside others overnight for Border Patrol agents to pick him up as cold rain and high winds whipped over the crackle of high-voltage power lines.

The group waiting near Boulevard, a small, loosely defined rural town, included several Peruvians who said they came for economic opportunity and to escape violence and political crises.

Peruvians can still avoid the Darien jungle by flying to El Salvador, which introduced visa-free travel for them in December in reciprocation for a similar move by Peru's government. But they would still have to travel over land through Mexico, where many are robbed or kidnapped.

Ecuadoreans, who have needed visas to enter Mexico since September 2021, can also fly to El Salvador, but not all do. Oscar Palacios, 42, said he walked through Darien because he couldn't afford to fly.

Palacios, who left his wife and year-old child in Ecuador with plans to support them financially from the U.S., said it took him two weeks to travel from his home near the violent city of Esmeralda to Mexico's border with Guatemala. It then took him two months to cross Mexico because immigration authorities turned him around three times and bused him back to the southern part of the country. He said he was robbed repeatedly.

Palacios finally reached Tijuana and, after three nights in a hotel, crossed into the U.S. A Border Patrol agent spotted him with migrants from Turkey and Brazil and drove them to the dirt lot to wait for a van or bus to take them to a station for processing. Looking back on the journey, Palacios said he would rather cross Darien Gap 100 times than Mexico even once.
