Celebrate spring break in style with unbreakable April cruise deals.

You know what season is here? No, not spring (well, that, too). Even more excitingly, it’s spring break season, put your responsibilities on hold, and give yourself a much-needed vacation. You made it through four months of winter doldrums — you’ve earned it. But where to start, and where to go? Well, we’re big fans of starting with cruise deals to score legendary travel savings on the spring break trip of a lifetime . And when it comes to cruise deals, we’ve got the best in the biz. Here’s why taking advantage of stellar savings on luxury cruises is always worth it.

Our epic spring break cruise deals

Everyone loves a good deal, especially on spring break. After all, what better way to save a little cash upfront, so you have more to spend on what really matters: excursions, entertainment, alcohol, souvenirs — you get the picture. That’s why we’re offering special cruise deals that’ll make it pretty hard NOT to pull the trigger on a spring break vacation.

First and foremost, we’re offering up to 80% off your second Sailor , when you book your next cruise vacation. This offer is good for sailings through 2025, so you can benefit even if you’re not spring breaking this year, but planning ahead for a summer cruise or 2025 winter escape. We’ve also got a new Bar Tab Bonus, where we’ll add money to your Bar Tab when you prepay, and perhaps most enticing for spring break, Add a Splash for Your Bash – a $350 value that includes bottomless brunch at The Wake or Razzle Dazzle and a dinner party for your friends with curated bevs and desserts.

The best time to book a cruise for spring break

Whether you’re traveling for spring break, celebrating an April birthday, or looking to take advantage of limited-time cruise deals , there’s really no bad time to book a cruise. Booking a last-minute April cruise for spring break? Awesome. Planning in advance for a summer or winter cruise that’s still months away? That’s fine too. No matter when you’re booking, there are a few pro tips you should always keep in mind.

Before choosing a cruise, the most important thing to consider is how long you want to go for. Do you want a quick 4-night Caribbean jaunt, or an epic 14-night transatlantic odyssey? Both options can satisfy your thirst for a cruise adventure – it all depends on what you’re looking for, and how much time you have to spare for a fulfilling vacation. It’s also important to consider the ports along the itinerary. This might sound obvious, but your vacation will be defined as much by the ship as by your port exploration. If you want to relax on a white sand beach all day, and maybe go ziplining through a jungle, a Caribbean cruise is for you. If you’d rather dive into historic cultural activities and see centuries-old architecture, a Mediterranean cruise might be more your speed. Our Shore Things are a great place to start drawing inspiration.

The best places to travel to for spring break

Deciding to go on a spring break cruise is just the first step. The second is deciding where to go. Luckily, there’s really no wrong answer. These are the best places to visit in April, especially if you’re looking for a little sun.

  • 5 Day Cruise from Miami to the Dominican Republic & Bimini - Our Dominican Daze trip, departing from Miami and sailing to Puerto Plata and Bimini, is the perfect way to get your late-winter dose of sunshine. Take advantage of the Dominican Republic’s legendary white sand beaches, before having a pool party you’ll never forget at Bimini, our exclusive beach club in the Bahamas.
  • Round trip 5 Day Cruise from Miami to Mexico & Bahamas - This 5-night Riviera Maya sailing from Miami visits Cozumel (Playa del Carmen) and the Beach Club at Bimini. The ultimate spring break trip, hitting some of the Caribbean’s best highlights, you’ll be able to explore ancient ruins one day and have a beach club party the next. What more can you ask for?
  • 5 Day Round trip Cruise from Miami to Turks and Caicos and Bimini - Explore one of our newest ports on a spring break voyage to Grand Turk. Spend a day laying by the beach and wandering the city streets, before ending the trip with a beach club party on Bimini.
  • 14 Day Cruise from Miami to Barcelona for Spring Break - This one’s for the truly adventurous. If you really want to make your spring break one for the books, how better to do it than a 14-day cruise across the Atlantic Ocean, from Miami to Barcelona. Along the way, you’ll stop at Gran Canaria and Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Casablanca in Morocco, and Valencia on the coast of Spain. Seeing one ocean is great, but there’s nothing like seeing the beauty of the Mediterranean Sea, and Seas surrounding the Caribbean's – on the same voyage, to really make your spring break epic.

We make planning spring break cruises simple

Plenty of amazing spring break trips die in the planning process. That’s why we’re making it as easy as possible for you and your friends to have a legendary spring break that doesn’t break the bank. Whether you’re taking advantage of our up to 80% off your second Sailor, getting a Bar Tab Bonus, or leveling up the party by adding a Splash for Your Bash, it’s hard to find a reason NOT to celebrate spring break with April cruises.

Book your dream spring break trip.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Deals Guide

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. First of all, they’re completely stress-free. On a cruise vacation, all the planning is taken care of by the cruise line — from the destinations you sail to and the shore excursions available at each port, to a full range of entertainment and activities happening onboard every day. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers. With Royal Caribbean, your cruise fare includes access to most of the ship’s attractions, select dining venues and all of the entertainment onboard. If you want to make your experience even more all-inclusive, you can opt for beverage and specialty dining packages that cover drinks and dinner at some of the most exclusive restaurants in the fleet. On top of all that, the cruise line presents frequent limited-time offers and seasonal sales, making it easy to score big savings when booking your vacation.

I’m ready to start planning my cruise — how can I score the best deals?

Whether you’re looking to book a short getaway or a longer adventure to far-flung destinations, Royal Caribbean makes it easy to save big on everything from your cruise fare to special experiences onboard and onshore. The first step to making sure you get the best deals is to join the cruise line’s email list. Once you’ve signed up, you’ll receive regular updates on all the latest offers, like deals by destination , kids sail free promotions and flash sales. The savings don’t end when you book your cruise, though. Once you’ve made a reservation, you’ll also receive notifications about special offers for onboard experiences — like discounts on beverage and specialty dining packages, shore excursions, spa services, and more via My Royal Cruise .

Does it pay to plan ahead, or should I wait until the last minute?

It’s an age-old question — does the early bird really get the worm, or are there perks to taking a “wait-and-see” approach? If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings , as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet.

If you can be flexible when it comes to your travel dates, you’ll have your pick of unbeatable savings. Popular vacation dates — like the holidays , spring break , summer vacation and week long cruises — sometimes see the highest prices (though you might get lucky with a seasonal sale). If you have the flexibility to travel during the shoulder season or off season, you’ll likely enjoy big savings on popular stateroom categories , like Balconies and even Suites. The deals don’t only apply to your cruise fare, though. Once you’ve booked your vacation, you could easily unlock discounts and specials on add-ons, including beverage and dining packages , Voom® high speed internet, shore excursions, and amazing experiences not included in your cruise fare — like a day of pampering at Vitality SM Spa, a behind-the-scenes tour of the ship’s galley followed by brunch, VIP seating at shows, and much more.

How can I maximize the value of my cruise vacation?

There are plenty of ways to get more bang for your buck when you sail on a Royal Caribbean cruise. Every ship in the fleet offers a range of delicious complimentary dining options , but you can dig into even more crave-worthy flavor by purchasing a Specialty Dining Package for less ahead of your cruise. Add a Specialty Beverage Package — which includes unlimited alcoholic beverages, soda, and more — and your experience is as close to all-inclusive as it gets. And with so many complimentary shows and attractions onboard, you can easily fill every sea day without spending a single dollar extra.

Royal Caribbean also offers deals based on departure ports  and destinations, so if you’re a flexible traveler looking for great savings, you can plan your next vacation around which itineraries are on sale. Just check your email or visit RoyalCaribbean.com/cruise-deals to stay up to date on promotions, sales and special offers. You can even browse sailings and deals by homeport, destination and season, so you can rest assured you’re getting the best possible deal no matter when or where in the world you choose to set sai.

Posted on Last updated: February 9, 2024

Ahoy, fellow adventurers! As winter’s frost gives way to blooming flowers and gentle breezes, April emerges as the perfect month for embarking on an unforgettable cruise.

cruises in April

Why April is the Perfect Time for a Cruise

Cruises in April offer a unique blend of natural beauty, ideal weather, and fewer crowds. Here’s why April deserves its reputation as a prime month for setting sail:

Blossoming Beauty

April marks the arrival of spring in many parts of the world. As you embark on your cruise, you’ll be greeted by landscapes bursting with vibrant colors and the sweet scent of blossoming flowers.

From the Caribbean to the Mediterranean, nature’s awakening transforms every port of call into a visual treat.

Ideal Weather

One of the key draws of cruising in April is the pleasant weather. In many regions, April strikes a balance between the lingering winter cold and the scorching summer heat.

This means you can comfortably explore both onboard and at your ports of call . Whether you’re donning swimwear for a beach excursion or dressing up for a formal evening, April’s climate is just right.

Fewer Crowds

April is the bridge between major holiday seasons, which translates to fewer tourists at popular cruise destinations.

You’ll find shorter lines at attractions, more space to spread out on deck, and a quieter, more relaxed atmosphere on your cruise ship. It’s the perfect time to savor the serenity of the sea without the hustle and bustle of peak season.

Planning Your April Cruise

Before you set sail, careful planning is essential for a smooth and enjoyable cruise experience in April. Let’s navigate the waters of cruise planning together:

Research and Booking Tips

Cruise types.

The first step in planning your April cruise is deciding on the type of cruise experience you desire. Ocean cruises and river cruises are two primary options, each offering a distinct set of advantages.

  • Ocean Cruises : These are the most common and typically larger ships that sail the world’s oceans. They offer a wide range of itineraries, making them a versatile choice for different preferences.
  • River Cruises : Ideal for those seeking a more intimate and culturally immersive experience. River cruises are typically on smaller ships that navigate rivers and waterways, allowing you to explore charming towns and cities along the way.

Itineraries

Research various cruise itineraries that are well-suited for April voyages. Consider destinations that align with your interests and desired experiences. Some popular choices include:

  • Caribbean Cruises : Perfect for those seeking sun-soaked beaches, water sports, and vibrant island culture.
  • Mediterranean Cruises : Explore the rich history and diverse cultures of Europe’s coastal cities.
  • Alaska Cruises : Witness the breathtaking natural beauty of glaciers, fjords, and wildlife.
  • Asia Cruises : Immerse yourself in the fascinating cultures and cuisine of Asian destinations.

Packing for an April Cruise

Packing for an April Cruise

Packing cruise clothes wisely for your April cruise is crucial for a comfortable and enjoyable journey.

As the weather can vary between destinations and even on different days of your cruise, a versatile wardrobe is key. Here’s your comprehensive packing checklist:

Packing Essentials

  • Layers, Layers, Layers : April weather can be unpredictable. Pack a mix of lightweight clothing for warm days and some warmer layers for cooler evenings. Consider versatile pieces like long-sleeve shirts, cardigans, and a lightweight jacket.
  • Formal Attire : Check your cruise line’s dress code and pack accordingly if there are formal nights or special events. For gentlemen, this might mean a suit or tuxedo, and for ladies, an elegant dress.
  • Swimwear : Don’t forget to pack your swimsuits! Whether you plan to take a dip in onboard pools or explore beach destinations, swimwear is a must.
  • Comfortable Shoes : Bring comfortable walking shoes suitable for shore excursions and exploring ports of call. For relaxation onboard, consider packing flip-flops or sandals.

Cruise Accessories

Cruise Accessories

  • Sunglasses and Hat : Protect yourself from the sun’s rays with sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat. These are essential for sunny days on the deck and during shore excursions.
  • Rain Gear : April showers can surprise you. A compact, lightweight rain jacket or umbrella can be a lifesaver if you encounter unexpected rain.
  • Travel-Sized Toiletries : While many cruise ships provide toiletries, it’s a good idea to bring travel-sized essentials like shampoo, conditioner, and sunscreen to ensure you have your preferred products.

packing for vacation

Travel Documents

  • Passport and Visa : Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your cruise’s end date, and check visa requirements for your destinations.
  • Cruise Documents : Don’t forget your cruise tickets, boarding passes, and any necessary travel insurance documentation.

Luggage Tips

  • Travel-Friendly Luggage : Choose luggage that is easy to maneuver and fits comfortably in your cabin’s storage space.
  • Pack Smartly : Roll your clothes to save space and minimize wrinkles. Use packing cubes to keep things organized.

Exchange contact information with fellow passengers and stay connected with new friends you’ve made during the cruise. Social media and email are excellent ways to maintain these connections.

April Cruise FAQs

If guaranteed sunshine is a must for your springtime cruise, it’s best to sail down to the equator. Itineraries including the Canary Islands, the southern Mediterranean and Hawaii are often the most popular at this time because of the excellent weather and laidback lifestyle. But if the weather doesn’t bother you and you’re looking for a great deal on once-in-a-lifetime adventures in far-off countries, then a transatlantic cruise to the likes of Canada or Alaska might be more your speed. Finding your perfect cruise in April couldn’t be easier with so many luxury cruise liners sailing to wonderful destinations all around the world. Plus, the seas should be beginning to calm, so it’s smooth sailing all around!

April is a great time to climb onboard a cruise ship and sail to beautiful destinations. The long school break for Easter means that families can get away for longer and spend some quality time together both on and off the ship. Meanwhile, couples and solo travellers can also get away for great prices at the start and end of the month since it’s still technically out of season for most destinations. Regardless of what type of cruise holiday you’re searching for, April can bring great weather, affordable prices and incredible experiences.

The Easter school holidays and warming temperatures in the most popular destinations across the globe can make April a busy time to set sail on a cruise. That being said, it’s generally not quite as busy as the following summer months. April can be a great time to grab a bargain and miss out on the crowds at the end of the summer in the likes of the Caribbean, New Zealand and Australia.

If you’re after quieter ships, it’s usually best to book a cruise at the beginning or end of the month to avoid the rush of the school holidays in between.

As the Caribbean comes to the end of its dry season, it’s possible that visitors might experience the odd storm at sea. Luckily, any rough sailing shouldn’t last too long! For the best weather and calmest seas, choose itineraries in the most southerly islands like Trinidad and Barbados where temperatures remain in the high 20s and sea conditions are more serene.

Find the best cruise vacation for you

How can i find a cheap cruise.

Cheap cruise deals are fairly easy to find in most cases, and you can begin by considering what kind of features and itinerary you want. The more simplistic the experience is, the cheaper it is in general. On Expedia.com, you can filter for specific features and sort your results by price. By mixing and matching certain features, unforgettable experiences may be available with discount cruises. For example, booking a cruise with stunning restaurants and live performances while opting for an inside cabin without an ocean view window or balcony could be ideal for a traveler who doesn't plan on spending much time in their cabin anyways

What is the cheapest month to take a cruise?

The cheapest month to take a cruise varies based on your destination and the cruise line company that runs the ship. A Caribbean cruise , for example, is generally cheapest in the late summer and early fall since it's the local hurricane season.

Can I cancel my cruise booking?

Yes, you can cancel, but there may be fees for canceling depending on how far in advance you cancel and what kind of booking you have. You can check the specific cruise lines’ cancellation policies in your itinerary on Expedia.com.

Are river cruises worth the money?

River cruises are quite relaxing, with much more varied scenery than you'd experience on an ocean cruise. These ships often also feature several stops along the river, so passengers can enjoy a greater variety of destinations to explore. Viking river cruises are especially adept at providing this unforgettable experience.

What cruises are best for families?

The best family cruises in 2024 / 2025 tend to be Disney cruises with plenty of offerings for kids and adults alike, though MSC cruises are known for their iconic Children Cruise Free promotion. Disney cruises, specifically, are essentially a Disney theme park on a boat with live shows, rides, and attractions with your kids' favorite characters.

How much does a cruise ship cost?

Cruise prices can vary quite a bit, with cheap cruises and especially luxurious all-inclusive cruises available. Budget lines can offer cruise tickets as low as $50 per night in some cases, while the more high-end experiences can reach up to $1,000 per night and more.

What are some of the best cruise lines?

Several different cruise lines have a lot to offer, such as Viking cruises , which are known for traversing oceans and rivers with a style that blends outdoor and indoor splendor. Celebrity cruise line is more upscale with luxurious features like WiFi, included beverages, champagne, and suites with panoramic views. Other top cruise lines include Royal Caribbean International , Carnival Cruise , Disney Cruise , and Norwegian Cruise .

How far in advance do you need to book a cruise?

It's generally best to book a cruise about 6 to 12 months before your cruise departure. That's the safest way to balance availability and affordability. Technically, you can book earlier or later than that, with some last-minute cruise deals occasionally available up to a weekbefore cruise departure.

Are cruise trips affordable?

They can be, and it's especially simple to search for more affordable cruises with Expedia.com. Not only can you filter by cruise length, cruise line, and cabin experience, but you may also sort your results by price to put the more affordable options first on your search results page.

What is it like to go on a cruise?

A cruise is generally designed to offer the most relaxing experience possible. Despite the size of the ship, it's possible to feel the wave. Many passengers report that the movements help them sleep. Additionally, many fun cruises offer live stage performances, several restaurants, and shopping opportunities. When the ship is in international waters, you may even be able to enjoy a bit of tax-free shopping.

Are cruises a good way to travel?

Cruise travel is great if you're looking for some varied fun. Compared to a plane or a train, cruises have their own attractions and can be considered an integral part of cruise vacations. Plus, a cruise can hit several different destinations as well, with plenty of time to enjoy the cruise and scenic locales. It's certainly worth it for a unique experience no other method of travel can match.

Which cruise line is the cheapest?

The actual cheapest cruise available depends on a variety of different factors. Still, Carnival Cruise tends to be very affordable overall, most of the time with great options like the Carnival Sunrise and Carnival Horizon . Royal Caribbean is also another fantastic cruise line offering great deals if you are watching your budget.

How can I get the best cruise deals in 2024 / 2025?

If you're looking for some of the best cruise deals, booking through Expedia.com makes it easy since you can sort your cruise search results by price and have access to special deals. One Key members can earn  OneKeyCash  on all eligible bookings and get instant discounts with Member Prices. Sign up today!

What do I need to know when I book a cruise?

To book a cruise, you'll need to know where you'll be setting off from and where you'll be going, in addition to how many people will be with you and the features of the specific cruise you book. Keep in mind that you'll want to factor in spending money in your budget for the cruise's restaurants and shops in most cases.

Where should I go on a cruise in 2024 / 2025?

Plenty of incredible cruise destinations are accessible such as cruises to the Bahamas and cruises to Mexico . You may also be interested in cruises to Alaska or cruises to Europe for something outside of the Caribbean.

What countries are best to visit by cruise ship?

A lot of countries are accessible via a cruise, but the best include a cruise to Australia . However, a cruise to Australia is quite a long trip at sea and really allows you to take in everything the cruise ship has to offer.

Can I get last-minute cruise deals?

Yes, last-minute cruise deals are often available, and you can find them on Expedia.com by inputting your travel dates in your search and sorting your results by price. The deals will automatically be applied to the price estimates so that the cheapest estimates will show up first on your search results page.

Are cruises all-inclusive?

Cruises aren't always all-inclusive, but they can be. If you're interested in all-inclusive cruises, you can activate a search filter for it to ensure your search results only show cruises that meet your all-inclusive standard.

Is food free on a cruise?

Food is sometimes free on a cruise, but there are often specialty restaurants that aren't included with the general booking that you'll have to pay for separately. Check the details of each cruise before you book in the "What's included" section after clicking the cruise on your search results page.

What cruise lines are adults only?

Several lines offer adults-only cruise experiences, including Viking cruises , Carnival cruises , and Princess cruises . With an adults-only cruise, you can relax in a tranquil and laid-back setting without kids running around and enjoy all the cocktails you want.

What cruise lines are considered to be the most luxurious?

Viking cruises are considered exceptionally luxurious, with smaller ships and larger cabins that make them feel more exclusive, but Celebrity cruises offer luxury cruise lines too. Booking a luxury cruise means you can expect high-end amenities including gourmet restaurants, sizable suites, top-tier performances, massive pools, and much more.

What are the best cruises for couples?

Viking Cruises have much to offer for a more romantic experience. Holland America Line cruises can be quite refined and romantic as well, with an adult-oriented experience that's sophisticated rather than rowdy. Romantic cruises offer exceptional service as well as cozy suites for you and your partner to enjoy that's complemented by delicious food often themed around the cruise destination.

Why should I go on a cruise for my honeymoon?

Going on a cruise is a great way for you and your new spouse to be pampered with luxury while also being able to explore a new destination. Whether you're taking a cruise to Hawaii or a cruise to Bermuda , a particularly romantic experience is almost guaranteed thanks to the sheer number of things to do.

Are there any Christmas cruises?

Yes, quite a few cruise lines operate around Christmas, and you can find them easily by entering travel dates around Christmas into your 2024 cruise search. Some of the most popular Christmas cruises are available with Carnival and Disney.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

Whether or not you need a passport depends on where you're going and the kind of cruise it is. Any US territory like Bermuda and Puerto Rico won't require a passport, of course, but you also don't need one if you're on a closed-loop cruise. This is a cruise that begins and ends at a US cruise terminal, even if there are stops in other countries on the way.

Why should I book a cruise with Expedia.com?

Booking a cruise with Expedia.com makes it easy to find a cruise type that works best for you. You can use the cruise finder and sort by cruise line, type, destination, length, and itinerary. One Key members also earn OneKeyCash on all eligible bookings that can be used to save on future eligible trips.

What happens if a cruise is canceled?

Every cruise has a different cancellation policy, but generally, passengers are entitled to either a full refund or a credit for a future cruise at a later date. Remember that they may automatically change your booking to their rescheduled date, so you may have to contact them if that date doesn't work for your schedule.

This board might be of some help http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=192

The board does not list Moscow but does list St. Petersburg and is for people cruising Northern Europe and the Baltics.

I imagine your best bet would be a river cruise. Check out Avalon, Viking etc.

Thanks just starting my search :-)

5,000+ Club

We've done some cruises that called at St Petersburg that offered a day's excursion to Moscow. It left VERY early in the AM, you flew, it was pricy, and folks said it was tiring. A day in Moscow is not enough to see and appreciate the city, and unless you've been to St Petersburg several times, you miss all there is to see there. Most folks who've done it that i've talked to would not recommend the Moscow excursion if you're taking a ocean liner cruise calling at St Petersburg, but you're on a river cruise whereby you get to spend 3 or 4 days in Moscow......yes.

paul929207

We took a river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. It was a six day cruise plus four days on either end. Still did not have enough time.

Keith1010

I would look at a river cruise as well.

You mention northern Europe so I assume you are interested in a sea cruise which would be on the Baltic Sea. Moscow is far inland, no sea cruises. As mentioned, excursions to Moscow are offered on the 2 day stops in St. Petersburg, but I wouldn't recommend it. I would suggest that a tour of Moscow would require a land visit or a river cruise. Both will require a visa which is waived for licensed tour group in St. Petersburg.

We just returned from a Vantage river cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg. We spent 3 day in a hotel in Moscow before getting on the ship. The story and pictures are on our website.

We are always happy to answer any questions.

Thanks everyone for your help. Thanks also to Steve and Kathy ! soo much information very helpful :)

Tiggertastic

river cruises or most of the cruises that go to st petersburg for 2 nights do an excursion upto moscow - they fly you up there and stay overnight and fly back

celebrity and NCL both did it when we did the baltics with them

In collaboration with Chucho Valdés’ Cuba & Beyond (Ch. 760), channel curator and piano legend Chucho Valdés reunites with saxophonist Paquito D’Rivera and trumpeter Arturo Sandoval — his friends in the super group Irakere — for a conversation and musical highlights. Afterwards, celebrated South African journalist and broadcaster Brenda Sisane spends a few hours spinning music from her studio in Johannesburg.

Did you see a red dot during totality? Astronomer answers burning solar eclipse questions

If you were in the path of totality on April 8 and gazed at the total solar eclipse, you will remember it for the rest of your life. Where you were, who you saw it with. The dip in temperature, the changing of the light, the wavy shadows, until – whoosh – totality is achieved and the sun is gone.

For those brief moments, you enter a bizarro universe and the world stops.

I have observed three total solar eclipses . The first was in 2006 during an eclipse cruise around the Mediterranean Sea with hundreds of amateur astronomers. The second was in 2017 behind a Quality Inn hotel in Franklin, Kentucky, with three dozen casual stargazers. Yesterday, I traveled to the Armstrong Air & Space Museum in Wapakoneta, Ohio, to share totality with several thousand spectators ready for a big spring party under the sun. All three total eclipses, regardless of location, were equally mind-blowing.

It is always difficult to photograph a total solar eclipse. You wait a long time in the sunshine for the beginning. The partial stages take about 75 minutes from when you can first see the moon in front of the sun to totality. But totality itself is so short, just 3 minutes 56 seconds from Wapakoneta. There is no time or proper lighting for taking pictures that truly capture it all.

It seems all of America is still trying to make sense of what they saw on April 8. Here are the answers to some lingering questions you might still be thinking about.

What made the eclipse glow white?

The sun has been more active this year, since it is nearing its 11-year cycle of maximum activity. Astronomers thought this eclipse might put on more of a show from the sun’s point of view.

The corona of the sun is the outer atmosphere that shows up as spreading rays of white light that you can only see from Earth during a total solar eclipse. From my view in Ohio, the corona was significantly smaller and less pronounced than during the 2017 eclipse. High, thin clouds may have obscured the fainter parts of the corona, making it appear shorter than normal, but other features absolutely stole the show.

What was the reddish-pink light around the moon during totality?

The highlight of this eclipse was seeing the solar prominences with my naked eye. During totality, you may have noticed pink bumps around the outside of the moon. These were solar eruptions, powerful jets of gases shooting off the sun’s surface. The largest prominence was on the bottom of the eclipse and was the size of several Earths.

What stars became visible during the eclipse?

The other observation I will remember distinctly from April 8 was the color of the sky. The direction of the sun in the sky was nearly the same direction from which the shadow of the moon arrived. That meant as I was facing the sun just before totality, I could see the darkness coming on the horizon.

During totality, the darkness was also more extreme than in 2017 because of a combination of a longer eclipse and the thin cloud cover. The planet Venus was clearly visible to the lower right of the eclipse and Jupiter hung higher and to its left. Then, just before totality was over, I could see the distant horizon brightening to a neon yellow color. This was where the sun was already shining, and that meant totality was almost over, and I would be bathed in sunlight once again. I took one last look at the totally eclipsed sun and was overcome yet again by the magnificent moment.

Well, jeez. What do we do now?

During a total solar eclipse, I have never taken a picture of Earth. I have never pointed the camera at the earthly landscapes or people around me who are looking up. I have never taken a selfie during a total solar eclipse. People have taken pictures of me before an eclipse showing the epitome of stress and anxiety. I have photos of me after an eclipse radiating the sheer childlike joy of waking from and fulfilling a dream. So, this time I wanted to make a mental selfie of myself under totality. What do I look like?

Yesterday, when the diamond ring appeared – the last weak rays of sunlight coming around the mountains of the moon – and totality set in, I was agog. Mouth open, unable to speak, arms up. It was just too beautiful for words. Gasp.

If you witnessed the total solar eclipse, or even the partial solar eclipse yesterday, write down what you saw, felt and sensed. Record audio or video of your memories right now. It is a beautiful way to remember those fleeting moments where you are both present on Earth and flying through the universe.

A Look at Iran’s Military Capabilities

The direct military confrontation between Iran and Israel has brought renewed attention to Iran’s armed forces. What are they capable of?

The start of a direct military confrontation between Iran and Israel has brought renewed attention to Iran’s armed forces. Early this month, Israel attacked a building in Iran’s diplomatic compound in the Syrian capital, Damascus, killing seven of Iran’s senior commanders and military personnel .

Iran vowed to retaliate, and did so about two weeks later, starting a broad aerial attack on Israel on Saturday involving hundreds of drones and missiles aimed at targets inside Israel and the territory it controls.

Here’s a look at Iran’s military and its capabilities.

Why is Iran’s military relevant right now?

Israeli officials had said they would respond to any attack by Iran with a counterattack, which could prompt further retaliation from Iran and possibly expand into a wider regional war. There is even a chance that a conflict of that sort could drag in the United States, although Washington has made clear it had nothing to do with the Damascus attack.

Analysts say that Iran’s adversaries, primarily the United States and Israel, have avoided direct military strikes on Iran for decades, not wishing to tangle with Tehran’s complex military apparatus. Instead, Israel and Iran have been engaged in a long shadow war via air, sea, land and cyberattacks, and Israel has covertly targeted military and nuclear facilities inside Iran and killed commanders and scientists.

“There is a reason Iran has not been struck,” said Afshon Ostovar, an associate professor of national security affairs at the Naval Postgraduate School and an expert on Iran’s military. “It’s not that Iran’s adversaries fear Iran. It’s that they realize any war against Iran is a very serious war.”

What sort of military threat does Iran pose?

The Iranian armed forces are among the largest in the Middle East, with at least 580,000 active-duty personnel and about 200,000 trained reserve personnel divided among the traditional army and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, according to an annual assessment last year by the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

The army and the Guards each have separate and active ground, air and naval forces, with the Guards responsible for Iran’s border security. The General Staff of the Armed Forces coordinates the branches and sets the overall strategy.

The Guards also operate the Quds Force, an elite unit in charge of arming, training and supporting the network of proxy militias throughout the Middle East known as the “axis of resistance.” These militias include Hezbollah in Lebanon, the Houthis in Yemen, militia groups in Syria and Iraq and Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad in Gaza.

Power by Proxy: How Iran Shapes the Mideast

A guide to the armed groups that let Iran extend its influence throughout the region.

The commander in chief of Iran’s armed forces is the supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the last word on all major decisions.

While the proxy militias are not counted as part of Iran’s armed forces, analysts say they are considered an allied regional force — battle ready, heavily armed and ideologically loyal — and could come to Iran’s aid if it was attacked.

“The level of support and types of systems Iran has provided for nonstate actors is really unprecedented in terms of drones, ballistic missiles and cruise missiles,” said Fabian Hinz, an expert on Iran’s military at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in Berlin. “They could be viewed as part of Iran’s military capability, especially Hezbollah, which has the closest strategic relationship with Iran.”

What kinds of weapons does Iran have?

For decades, Iran’s military strategy has been anchored in deterrence, emphasizing the development of precision and long-range missiles, drones and air defenses. It has built a large fleet of speedboats and some small submarines that are capable of disrupting shipping traffic and global energy supplies that pass through the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran has one of the largest arsenals of ballistic missiles and drones in the Middle East, Mr. Ostovar said. That includes cruise missiles and anti-ship missiles, as well as ballistic missiles with ranges up to 2,000 kilometers, or more than 1,200 miles. These have the capacity and range to hit any target in the Middle East, including Israel.

In recent years, Tehran has assembled a large inventory of drones with ranges of around 1,200 to 1,550 miles and capable of flying low to evade radar, according to experts and Iranian commanders who have given public interviews to the state news media. Iran has made no secret of the buildup, displaying its trove of drones and missiles during military parades, and has ambitions to build a large export business in drones. Iran’s drones are being used by Russia in Ukraine and have surfaced in the conflict in Sudan.

The country’s bases and storage facilities are widely dispersed, buried deep underground and fortified with air defenses, making them difficult to destroy with airstrikes, experts say.

Where does Iran get its weapons?

International sanctions have cut Iran off from high-tech weaponry and military equipment manufactured abroad, like tanks and fighter jets.

During Iran’s eight-year war with Iraq in the 1980s, few countries were willing to sell weapons to Iran. When Ayatollah Khamenei became Iran’s supreme leader in 1989, a year after the war ended, he commissioned the Guards to develop a domestic weapons industry and poured resources into the effort, which was widely reported in the Iranian news media. He wanted to assure that Iran would never again have to rely on foreign powers for its defense needs.

Today, Iran manufactures a large quantity of missiles and drones domestically and has prioritized that defense production, experts said. Its attempts to make armored vehicles and large naval vessels have met with mixed results. It also imports small submarines from North Korea while expanding and modernizing its domestically produced fleet .

How do other countries see Iran’s military, and what are its weaknesses?

Iran’s military is viewed as one of the strongest in the region in terms of equipment, cohesion, experience and quality of personnel, but it lags far behind the power and sophistication of the armed forces of the United States, Israel and some European countries, experts said.

Iran’s greatest weakness is its air force. Much of the country’s aircraft date from the era of Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi, who led Iran from 1941 to 1979, and many have been disabled for lack of spare parts. The country also bought a small fleet from Russia in the 1990s, experts said.

Iran’s tanks and armored vehicles are old, and the country has only a few large naval vessels, experts said. Two intelligence gathering vessels, t he Saviz and Behshad, deployed on the Red Sea, have aided the Houthis in identifying Israeli-owned ships for attacks, American officials have said.

Will Israel’s attack disrupt Iran’s military?

The assassinations of the senior military officials are expected to have a short-term impact on Iran’s regional operations, having eliminated commanders with years of experience and relationships with the heads of the allied militias.

Nevertheless, the chain of command for the armed forces inside Iran remains intact, experts say.

An earlier version of this article misstated the name of a group in the Gaza Strip. It is Palestinian Islamic Jihad, not Islamic Palestinian Jihad.
