Arctic Monkeys at Emirates Old Trafford Manchester 2023 – stage times, support act, setlist, and more

The Sheffield lads are over in our neck of the woods for two massive gigs this week.

Emily Sergeant

Arctic Monkeys are set to play two massive shows at Emirates Old Trafford as part of their sold-out 2023 UK tour this week.

After having the crowd in the palm of their hands as they took to the stage in two other major UK cities this week, the Sheffield indie rock icons are finally making their way to visit us here in Manchester and will be be playing to around 50,000 adoring fans over two nights at Emirates Old Trafford .

The beloved four-piece, fronted by Alex Turner, with Matt Helders on drums, guitarist Jamie Cook, and bass player Nick O’Malley, are undoubtedly one of the most successful British bands of the 21st century after bursting onto the scene with their debut album back in 2006 – which became the fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history.

That’s just one of a handful of records the indie rockers have to their name throughout their celebrated careers, as well as claiming six UK number one albums, selling over 12 millions records, and taking home countless awards – including BRITs, GRAMMYs, and the coveted Mercury Prize .

They’ve also had headlining slots at some of the world’s most famous music festivals, including Glastonbury twice.

The band are playing in Manchester this week as part of their 2023 UK tour following the release of their critically-acclaimed seventh studio album, The Car , back in October 2022.

And they look set to put on a seriously memorable show.

So if you’re heading to see Arctic Monkeys at Emirates Old Trafford Manchester this weekend, then here’s everything you need to know.

When are Arctic Monkeys playing in Manchester?

Arctic Monkeys were originally only booked to play one night at Emirates Old Trafford on Friday 2 June, but after tickets sold-out in absolutely no time at all, the Sheffield band were quick to add a second Manchester date into the mix.

The band will now take to the stage on both Friday 2 and Saturday 3 June.

With Emirates Old Trafford having a maximum gig capacity of 50,000 people, this means that up to 100,000 fans could see the indie rockers live over the two nights.

Are there any tickets still available?

Given the sold-out first night, and the decision to add a second night due to the absolutely overwhelming demand by fans, as you might expect, tickets to both Arctic Monkeys dates in Manchester are extremely hard to come by at this point.

At the time of writing, popular ticketing website Ticketmaster showed their were no tickets available to purchase, although this could change at any moment, so it’s worth continuing to check.

Also make sure to keep your eye on SeeTickets here for any last-minute releases.

And if you try to buy tickets second-hand, please make sure you’re using a reputable resale site so you don’t get caught out by scammers.

Who is supporting Arctic Monkeys in Manchester?

Arctic Monkeys have two support acts lined up for both of the Manchester gigs.

arctic monkeys tour support act

The Hives are the first of two acts supporting Arctic Monkeys on both Friday 2 and Saturday 3 June.

With six studio albums to their name, the Swedish five-piece rock band rose to prominence in the early 2000s during the garage rock revival, and their mainstream success followed with the release of their second album,  Veni Vidi Vicious , which featured the hit single ‘Hate to Say I Told You So’.

The band has been acclaimed by music critics as one of the best live rock bands of the 21st century, so concertgoers are in for a real treat.

The Mysterines

The Mysterines are the second act supporting Arctic Monkeys, with the British alternative rock band hailing from Liverpool and the Wirral, and fronted by Lia Metcalfe, having enjoyed recent success following the release of their debut album, Reeling , back in March 2022 – which reached number nine on the UK Albums Chart.

Stage times

These are expected stage times, although everything is subject to change on the night.

  • Gates Open – 5pm (Friday) and 4:30pm (Saturday)
  • Support Acts – The first support act is expected on stage around 6:40pm .
  • Arctic Monkeys – Expected on stage anywhere from 8:45pm – 9pm .

Emirates Old Trafford says the gig will finish “no later than 10:30pm”, and you can find more FAQs on the venue’s website here .

What is the potential setlist?

Although nothing is confirmed, with artists and bands known to switch setlists up from gig to gig and throw in a few surprises here and there, depending on the energy of the crowd and what they’re feeling that night, Arctic Monkeys have been roughly following a particular order of songs since their 2023 UK tour began.

Here’s the setlist from their gig in Bristol earlier this week.

  • Don’t Sit Down ‘Cause I’ve Moved Your Chair
  • Snap Out of It
  • Crying Lightning
  • Teddy Picker
  • The View From the Afternoon
  • Four Out of Five
  • Why’d You Only Call Me When You’re High?
  • Arabella (with Pretty Visitors instrumental interlude)
  • My Propeller

How to get to Emirates Old Trafford

There are, of course, a number of ways to get to Emirates Old Trafford, but as more 300,000 people are expecting to be descending on Manchester’s major venues for musical events this week, Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) has been advising that the Metrolink will be the “quickest and most-reliable way” of travelling in and around the city centre.

TfGM has also strongly encouraged that people making their way to either of the two Arctic Monkeys “plan ahead” due to coordinated rail strikes by Aslef and RMT unions on both Friday 2 and Saturday 3 June.

📣 It's a busy time for Manchester over the coming week! Here is a brief overview of what's to come: – Rail strikes – Coldplay at the Etihad – Arctic Monkeys at Emirates Old Trafford – Elton John at AO Arena 👉 Find more travel advice at https://t.co/40oagmYqs8 pic.twitter.com/5uWIZO2yEF — Transport for Greater Manchester 🚲🚶🏾‍♀️ (@OfficialTfGM) May 28, 2023

The closest Metrolink stop is Old Trafford , which is located next to Emirates Old Trafford, but it will be busy both before and after the concerts, so you could also use  Trafford Bar  for both southbound journeys on the East Didsbury or Airport lines, and for journeys back to the city centre.

The last tram from Old Trafford to the city centre will depart at 1:08am and towards Altrincham at 12:29am, while the last tram from Trafford Bar to East Didsbury will depart at 11:46pm and to the Airport at 11:31pm.

Pubs are an integral part of British culture, and nowhere does them better than Manchester – in our humble opinion.

We’ve got tiny ones, giant ones, shiny ones and ancient ones.

There are some that serve seriously fancy gastropub food and others that serve a whole menu of crisps – and one that just encourages you to bring a chippy tea in with you.

There are real ale pubs, craft beer pubs, taprooms, and pubs that also do pretty good cocktails.

Whatever your brief is for the perfect boozer, Manchester will have somewhere that fits the bill.

We’ve rounded up some of Manchester’s quirkiest pubs that offer something a little… unexpected.

Temple Bar, Oxford Road

View this post on Instagram A post shared by THE MANC (@the.manc)

It is always, always that trip to the toilets that makes you realise you’ve tipped over into inebriated – staring at yourself in the mirrors above the sinks thinking ‘Oh, yup, too many pints’.

Here in Manchester, it can also be a trip to the toilet that gets you sozzled in the first place.

The Temple – or Temple of Convenience to give it its full name – is a tiny subterranean drinking den that in the Victorian era, was actually a public toilet.

It’s so narrow you can almost reach wall-to-wall if you stand with your arms outstretched.

But down here you’ll also find a great selection of bottled beers, a jukebox, and bags of charm.

100 Great Bridgewater Street, M1 5JW

The Victoria Tap, Manchester Victoria

Victoria Tap is open in Manchester now

What makes The Victoria Tap such a little gem? For one, it’s taken what was a literal bin store and turned it into a genuinely beautiful drinking den.

For two, as it’s inside the train station, it’s got a departures board – the twist being that it tells you how many pints you can drink before your train leaves.

And to be honest, we’d quite like to use pints as a unit for measuring time forever more.

The new craft beer bar has also built a small beer garden on its far side, where trams slide past within inches of the boundary wall.

Victoria train station, M3 1WY

The Marble Arch, Rochdale Road

Come, venture slightly beyond your comfort zone of the city centre and Ancoats – for just beyond you’ll find one of Manchester’s very best pubs.

The Marble Arch building has been here since 1888, and to this day is one of the most impressive historic pubs in the UK.

Its tiled walls, ornate ceilings and mosaic floors, not to mention its roaring fire and its beautiful wooden bar, are just part of the charm.

One of the strangest experiences when visiting The Marble Arch is the way the bar seems to draw you in to it.

It’s all thanks to its gently sloping floor – some say it’s this way to make rolling barrels easier, others say it’s for cleaning, but out favourite theory is that it’s to encourage inebriated customers to totter back to the bar for another round.

73 Rochdale Road, M4 4HY

The Seven Oaks, Chinatown

arctic monkeys tour support act

By day, The Seven Oaks is a fairly normal pub – a lot of beer, a lot of sports, a lot of regulars.

But by night, it becomes the stuff of hospitality legend.

This is the pub for people who work in pubs, a place where the hospitality staff normally pouring drinks for everyone else can come and have their own after work – even if they happen to finish work at 4am.

Built for the people who work ‘the wrong 9-to-5’, if you’ve got proof of working in the hospitality industry, this Chinatown pub is the place to come for late night, or early morning, pints.

5 Nicholas Street, M1 4HL

Peveril of the Peak, Great Bridgewater Street

arctic monkeys tour support act

You cannot miss the Peveril of the Peak.

Not only is it clad all over in ceramic tiles in vibrant shades of chartreuse and mint green, but it also stands alone at the fork in a road.

Manchester’s only detached pub has been here since the early 19th century, with a jumble of cosy rooms arranged around a central bar.

Inside, there are all the best sorts of pub trimmings, like a jukebox and a dart board.

It’s also had the same landlady for 51 years – Nancy Swanick, 90, is pretty legendary in her own right.

127 Great Bridgewater Street, M1 5JQ

Circus Tavern, Portland Street

arctic monkeys tour support act

In stark contrast to the Peveril of the Peak, The Circus Tavern is very much a pub you can miss.

This tiny blink-and-you’ll-miss-it drinking den is home to the smallest bar in Europe.

Don’t expect a massive selection of beers here – there simply isn’t room.

It’s the weeniest pub in Manchester and also one of its oldest, dating back to 1840 (though the building was here even earlier).

Back in the day, it used to be a regular haunt of circus performers (hence the name), and Manchester United players, including George Best.

The Old Wellington Inn, Exchange Square

When you’re nursing your drink in the Old Wellington, you’re surrounded by masses of history.

The city centre pub is the oldest building of its kind in Manchester, dating all the way back to 1552.

Back in those days, the walls, floors and ceilings were all wonky, and the ceiling beams were so low that punters had to duck when they were walking around.

The pub might be ancient, but strangely, it hasn’t always been here on Exchange Square.

The medieval building actually used to be about 70 metres down the road, and had to be moved bit by bit and piece by piece after the IRA bomb in 1996.

Over the course of two years, both the Old Wellington and Sinclair’s Oyster bar were completely rebuilt in their new home here, where they still stand as two of Manchester’s most amazing pubs – and pull some of the city’s cheapest pints .

4 Cathedral Gates, M3 1SW

Mother Mac’s, Back Piccadilly

Mother Mac's, a historic pub in Manchester, has closed down

Back Piccadilly in the city centre isn’t exactly a wholesome location as things stand – there’s a lot of graffiti, rows of bins, the occasional rat, and (if you’re really unlucky) human faeces.

But if you travel back in time to 1976, things get significantly more bleak. We’re talking mass murder bleak.

A previous landlord of the Mother Mac’s pub turned and killed his wife, then his three children, then the pub’s cleaner, before setting the building ablaze and killing himself.

Mother Mac’s has now actually closed , with plans to turn it into a new pub called the Rat & Pigeon – which is fitting, given that’s mostly what will be walking past.

33 Back Piccadilly, M1 1HP

The Shakespeare, Fountain Street

arctic monkeys tour support act

If you’re a fan of a ghost story, this is the pub for you.

The Shakespeare on Fountain Street – directly across the road from Primark – has had plenty of paranormal activity, if we believe the reports of its customers (who, admittedly, are likely to have been worse for wear).

Punters have reported seeing a flaming ghost at the top of the stairs, believed to be the spirit of a young girl who accidentally set herself alight while lighting candles at the inn.

It’s also said to be haunted by a former chef who hung himself here – you can apparently still see the rope marks on one of the ceiling beams.

Spooky past aside, The Shakespeare is a good-value pub with a menu of typical pub fare.

16 Fountain Street, M2 2AA

Briton’s Protection, Great Bridgewater Street

The Britons Protection. Credit: The Manc Group

Famed for its Jack Daniel’s collection , the Briton’s Protection draws in whiskey fans from across the globe.

Every year the owners travel to Tennessee to make bespoke casks – and they’ve even created a Jack Daniel’s-themed room in a snug behind the bar.

Home to some exceedingly rare bottles, including one with an unaired Sinatra concert recording hidden in a tie clip, collectors pay thousands for bottles from the Manchester casks.

That’s not all, though. The pub’s history dates back to the Peterloo massacre, attested to by a mural in its hallway.

Not entirely historically accurate, look closely and you’ll spot some of the rebels bear a striking resemblance to famous Manchester footballers.

Apparently, the previous owner was a bit of a fan.

Great Bridgewater Street

Cask, Liverpool Road

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Cask EST.2003 (@cask_manchester)

This beautiful teal-fronted pub on Liverpool Road makes this list for a few reasons – the main one being that you can bring your chippy tea in with you.

Cask has become a firm favourite with Manchester beer-lovers in the two decades since it opened, boasting perhaps the most comprehensive selections in the city.

There are imports from across Europe, America and even further afield, plus a cracking selection of board games and a brilliant jukebox.

And yes, our favourite bit is nipping next door to The Fish Hut and bringing a chippy tea back to your table – you just have to agree to tidy up after yourself.

Friday night’s gig at New Century Hall was one of those where you’re so stunned by the show that you’re left wishing the act in front of you was Manc so you could claim them as you’re own – but sadly Novo Amor is a Welshman and we had to give him back.

The stage name for the highly impressive multi-instrumentalist and producer, Ali John Meredith-Lacey, in truth seeing him for the first time here in Manchester proved that the Novo Amor really is the sum of many talented parts.

Much like Bon Iver in that sense and in style, sound and approach to making music, for without Justin Vernon and co. there would be no Novo, one of our first worries was that he would be unable to carry over the level of production and sound design heard on the albums to the stage performance.

That’s where his full band came in, who ensured not only that the whole thing sounded virtually studio-perfect but took a step beyond what we ever thought we’d get to hear at a Novo Amor gig. And it all started with Ed Tullet performing under his own stage name Lowswimer for the opening act.

Lowswimmer

Anyone who listens to Novo will likely be aware of the little sub-group of artists that all swim in the same circle, from Ali himself to the likes Gia Margaret, Sean Carey (part of Bon Iver) and Yvette Young, to Hailaker – Tullet being one-half opposite Jemima Coulter – as well as Lowswimmer and several others.

He might have only played a handful of songs with only a guitar, including a couple of beautiful Hailaker tracks, but it was more than enough to leave an impression of the very sincere artist who clearly has a massive influence on all of those around him.

Explaining that this would be his second to last show perform with Novo Amor due to health issues and the general toll of touring, having helped write, record, produce and play the bulk of music ever put out under that name since day dot, it was a fittingly sombre and intimate warm-up.

However, even in delivering the more stripped-back set we were already half expecting from the headliner, we almost managed to get both sides of this little mini-music community: the quieter acoustic stuff where big vocals moments are left to shine, and they did, as well as the real deal.

Novo Amor live at New Century

When Ali and the rest of his band finally walked out on stage, with Ed himself receding back into what looked to be the more comfortable position just outside of the spotlight, it suddenly dawned on us that it wouldn’t just be a few folky guitars and some nice piano playing.

After the Lowswimmer’s ironically low-lit stage had somehow managed to hide a quietly better-budget backdrop, the stage suddenly began to light up as Novo Amor wandered on to pick up their instruments and play and from here on out we were just as captivated by the lights and effects as we were the music.

Be it thin but sharp white lines tracing the borders of light boxes like a weird game of snake; solid blocks of electric blues, warm yellows and moody reds appearing on perfectly-timed musical cues or dots delicately twinkling into a slow-moving constellation, each song felt like an experience.

Not sure we’ll ever get over seeing this track being introduced in such a stunning way and in a venue as eye-catching as New Century :

Similar to Ed when he was busy tuning his guitar, Ali let on that his talent lies in bringing these intricately built-up tracks to life not only in record form but in translating them for the live shows too, choosing to ask ChatGPT for some ‘on-stage banter in the style of Novo Amor’ to fill the gaps.

Truthfully, as much as both parties said they were ‘not good at this kind of stuff’, he did a good job at handling the short lulls between songs by letting people ask questions, daft or not, as well as making sure water got to those feeling faint in the hot room. Everyone was fine, don’t worry.

In fact, when one girl seemingly passed out nearer to the front of the crowd as he came towards the end of fan favourite Halloween (you have no idea how gorgeous that song sounds with a full room of people singing it back, by the way), he still managed to check on her whilst quietly playing the outro. A total pro.

Those were the three key letters here in every sense the more we think about it; be it the effortless professionalism in recreating what you hear in your headphones down to the tee and then some live, or the production levels and simple but striking set design behind them, it was verging on surreal.

same day same face live in manchester

  • Manc institutions Matt and Phred’s and Jimmy’s to join forces for new live gig series
  • Another wave of acts has been added to the Green Island Festival 2024 lineup this summer
  • The timeline of Night & Day Cafe’s noise row – including a surprise offer from Matty Healy

We might not have been anticipating such a put-together set and overall level of production both in terms of sound and the often mesmerising visuals but we don’t know why, because we absolutely should’ve.

This is what you get when you put a group of extremely talented musicians and multi-instrumentalists together in one place. They might make highly complex, heavily layered and often delicate sounds with electronics and technology playing a big role, but they also know how to ramp it up for an audience.

All we can pray is that the next time Novo is back in Manchester he brings at least one half of Hailaker along again and maybe a surprise showing from another corner of this collective.

A special shout-out has to go to Ed as well; we have no shame in admitting that watching Ali looking on at his long-term creative partner and mate with a smile as he signed off his time with the live band by belting out the final tune had us welling up.

Now fans can tag along for the ride once again. Though some dates have already sold out, here’s how and where you can still find tickets to see the Arctic Monkeys (and opener Fountaines D.C.) on tour in 2023, plus which venues and dates the band will play next fall.

The Hives announce 12-date March & April 2024 UK tour

Roll on next year!

Currently conquering stadiums as special guests on Arctic Monkeys’ tour, Swedish rock heroes The Hives have announced a headline UK & Ireland tour for spring 2024.

The sharply dressed quintet will play 12 headline shows in March and April 2024 in support of their new studio album ‘The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons’, which will grace our lugholes on Friday 11th August.

The Hives open their nationwide jaunt at Leeds Academy on Wednesday 27th March and they visit Newcastle, Nottingham, Wolverhampton, Glasgow, Bristol, Brighton, Cardiff, Manchester, Dublin and Norwich before bringing things to a euphoric climax at London Eventim Apollo on Saturday 13th April.

Tickets to The Hives’ UK tour go on sale from Kerrang! Radio Tickets at 9am on Friday 30th June 2023.

‘The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons’ boasts 12 tracks including the muscular lead single ‘Bogus Operandi’ and the recently premiered ‘Countdown to Shutdown.’

A description of ‘The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons’ reads: “As the album’s macabre title hints, the band’s extended absence from the studio has been no hiatus but rather a horror story.

“The Hives now admit they have not seen nor spoken to their founder, mentor and songwriter, the perpetual limelight-shunning Randy Fitzsimmons, since the release of 2012’s Lex Hives.

“Following the recent discovery of a hidden away obituary and cryptic poem in the local paper of the Northern Vastmanland town where The Hives are from, the band members were led to Fitzsimmons’ tombstone.

“Upon digging the freshly interred ground, the band found not a body but instead several tapes, suits, and a piece of paper bearing the words “The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons” typed up as if a title.

“Whether a hoax or Fitzsimmons’ opening gambit, remains to be seen. The uncovered tapes included the demos that would become the twelve new songs on The Death Of Randy Fitzsimmons.”

Frontman Howlin’ Pelle Almqvist adds: “There's no maturity or anything like that bulls---, because who the f--- wants mature rock’n’roll? That's always where people go wrong, I feel. ‘It’s like rock’n’roll but adult,’ nobody wants that! That's literally taking the good s--- out of it.

“Rock’n’roll can't grow up, it is a perpetual teenager and this album feels exactly like that, which it's all down to our excitement – and you can’t fake that s---.”

The 11 most expensive guitars of all time:, 13 - duane allman’s 1957 gibson les paul.

The Goldtop 1957 Gibson Les Paul guitar that the late-great Duane Allman used to record 'Layla' alongside Eric Clapton, sold for $1.25 million (£1.03 million) in August 2019. First purchased by Allman in early 1969, it's the fabled guitar on which he learned and perfected his slide style. It was his primary instrument on the first two Allman Brothers albums, and for the 'Layla' album by Derek & The Dominos.

12 - Eric Clapton's The Fool guitar

Eric Clapton's iconic guitar The Fool sold for a whopping $1.27 million at Julien's Auctions on Thursday 16th November as part of their three-day music auction event 'Played, Worn and Torn: Rock N' Roll Iconic Guitars and Memorabilia' at the Hard Rock Café in Nashville. The 1964 Gibson Custom-Painted Psychedelic Guitar was played on the majority of Cream's recordings in the 1960s. When the band broke up, Clapton gave it to George Harrison who passed it to Jackie Lomax. In the 70s and 80s it was owned and stage played by Todd Rundgren, who called it "Sunny" after Cream's 'Sunshine of Your Love,' until he sold it at auction to its previous owner in 2000. The guitar was acquired by The Jim Irsay Collection in Indianapolis, and a portion of proceeds went to the Kicking The Stigma charity.

11 - David Gilmour’s 1954 Fender Stratocaster

David Gilmour's 1954 White Fender Stratocaster #0001 used on Pink Floyd's 'Another Brick in the Wall (Parts 2 and 3)' sold for $1,815,000 (£1,493,000) on an estimate of $100,000-150,000 at the David Gilmour Guitar Collection auction at Christie's in New York in June 2019. For a few fleeting hours it was the most expensive Fender ever until another famous David Gilmour guitar kicked it out of the park…

10 – Jerry Garcia‘s Wolf Guitar

Jerry Garcia's famous Wolf Guitar sold at auction for $1.9 million (£1.57 million) in June 2017 in New York. Its buyer was Brian Halligan, Chief Executive of software company HubSpot and a keen Grateful Dead aficionado. Proceeds from the sale of the Wolf guitar went to the Southern Poverty Law Center, a charity specialising in civil rights and public interest litigation. Customized by master luthier Doug Irwin, and labelled "D. Irwin 001", Wolf was delivered to Jerry Garcia 50 years ago and first appeared in public during a 1973 New York City performance the Grateful Dead gave for the Hell's Angels.

9 - Kurt Cobain's Skystang I guitar

Kurt Cobain's Skystang I guitar he played at his final Nirvana show before his death in 1994 sold for $1,587,500 (£1,271,730) at auction in Nashville in November 2023. Cobain first played his electric Fender Skystang I guitar on 18th October 1993 at the Arizona State Fair Veteran's Memorial Coliseum during the In Utero tour, and he performed with it at his final concert on 1st March 1994 at Terminal 1 in Munich. The guitar bought by Mitsuru Sato who bid via the phone at the Julien's Auctions' sale held at Hard Rock Café, Nashville.

8 – Peter Green’s Greeny

Fleetwood Mac legend Peter Green bought 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard for sixty guineas after being asked to join John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in the mid-60s. He played it on Fleetwood Mac classics including 'The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)' and 'Albatross' before selling it to fellow guitar virtuoso Gary Moore in 1970. Moore played it throughout his solo career and time with Thin Lizzy, however he was forced to sell it in 2006 due to financial difficulties. Guitar dealer Phil Winfield bought it for somewhere between $750,000 and $1.2 million before selling it for $2 million (£1.65 million) to a private collector. Metallica's Kirk Hammett bought Greeny in 2014 for less than $2 million and he still performs with it to this day.

7 – Jimi Hendrix’s 1968 Fender Stratocaster

The white 1968 Fender Stratocaster that Jimi Hendrix famously played at Woodstock in 1969 was purchased by late Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen for a cool $2 million (£1.65 million) in 2000. Keen guitarist and collector Allen, who passed away in 2018, donated the fabled instrument to the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle where it's still on display today.

6 – John Lennon’s Gibson J-160E acoustic-electric guitar

John Lennon's long-lost acoustic Gibson J-160E acoustic-electric guitar, which he used on The Beatles' 'Please Please Me' and 'With the Beatles' albums, fetched $2,410,000 (£1,992,000) at auction in November 2015. The guitar had been owned since 1969 by a man called John McCaw who purchased it from a friend called Tommy Pressley who in turn, two years earlier, had bought it for just $175. McCaw was completely unaware it originally belonged to John Lennon until he stumbled across a photograph of The Beatle performing with it in a 2012 copy of Guitar Aficionado magazine. Realising its importance (and worth), McCaw put it up for auction.

5 - Reach Out to Asia Fender Stratocaster

The Reach out to Asia Fender Stratocaster became the most expensive guitar ever in 2005 when it fetched $2,700,000 (£2,232,000) under the hammer in Qatar. Proceeds went to the charity Reach Out to Asia, which was set up to help victims of the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004. The guitar was signed by Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Eric Clapton, Brian May, Jimmy Page, David Gilmour, Jeff Beck, Pete Townsend, Mark Knopfler, Ray Davies, Liam Gallagher, Ronnie Wood, Tony Iommi, Angus and Malcolm Young, Paul McCartney, Sting, Ritchie Blackmore, Def Leppard and Bryan Adams.

4 - Eddie Van Halen's 'Hot For Teacher' Kramer

Eddie Van Halen's custom-made Kramer electric guitar that he played in Van Halen's seminal 'Hot for Teacher' sold for a massive $3,932,000 (£3,167,343) under the hammer in April 2023. One of the most iconic guitars of the MTV era, the stage used and filmed guitar was custom made by Paul Unkert of Kramer Guitars for Eddie Van Halen. The $3,932,000 it fetched at auction at Sotheby's in New York made it the fourth most expensive guitar ever sold.

3 – David Gilmour’s Black Strat

David Gilmour's fabled guitar, The Black Strat, set the world record for the World's Most Expensive Guitar in June 2019 when it fetched $3,975,000 (£3,285,000) at Christie's in New York as part of the David Gilmour Guitar Collection auction. The fabled guitar was famously played on the 'Comfortably Numb' solo and was integral to the recording of the Pink Floyd albums 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' (1973), 'Wish You Were Here' (1975), 'Animals' (1977) and 'The Wall' (1979), together with Gilmour's solo albums. Just like all the other guitars in the auction, proceeds from sales of The Black Strat went directly to the climate change charity ClientEarth. The Black Strat was the world's most expensive guitar for almost exactly 12 months.

2 – Kurt Cobain’s Fender Mustang Guitar

Kurt Cobain's famous Fender Mustang guitar he played in Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' video in 1991 became the second most expensive guitar ever sold under the hammer in May 2022. The 1969 Fender Mustang Competition Lake Placid Blue Finish Electric Guitar sold for a whopping $4.5 million (£3.7 million) at Julien's Auctions in New York as part of their Music Icons auction. The left-handed guitar had an estimate of $600,000 to $800,000. Billionaire Jim Irsay snapped up the Fender Mustang guitar having previously bought David Gilmour's fabled Black Strat guitar for a then world-record $3,975,000 (£3.285 million) in 2019.

1 - Kurt Cobain’s MTV Unplugged Guitar

One year on from the world-record sale of David Gilmour's Black Strat, Kurt Cobain's MTV Unplugged guitar sold for a massive $6,010,000 (£4,960,000) at auction in June 2020 and became the World's Most Expensive Guitar in the process. The late-great Nirvana frontman played the 1959 Martin D-18E acoustic-electric guitar for the band's MTV Unplugged set at Sony Music Studios in New York City on 18th November 1993 – just five months before his untimely death aged 27. Alongside being the most expensive guitar, it set four further world records - World's Most Expensive Acoustic Guitar, World's Most Expensive Martin Guitar, World's Most Expensive Piece of Rock Memorabilia and World's Most Expensive Nirvana Memorabilia. The buyer of Kurt Cobain's guitar was Peter Freedman, Founder of RØDE Microphones.
