Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:
From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.
At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.
According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.
The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.
Coffee Ring
The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.
Zodiac Metro
According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.
Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.
Paleontological finds
Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.
Duration: 2 hours
Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing
This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.
Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.
Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.
Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.
Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating
We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…
This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.
The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.
You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.
Physical Rating
Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

Pennsylvania primary replay: Trump, Biden clinch victory; Casey and McCormick will compete for Senate
A ll eyes were on Pennsylvania on Tuesday as the key swing state held pivotal elections that could send a clear message for November's race for the White House.
While former President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden already locked down their respective party nominations, they both swiftly won the Republican and Democratic primaries in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, garnering even more support.
Sen. Bob Casey, D-Penn., and David McCormick, a businessman, won the Democratic and Republican Senate primaries, and they'll face off in the fall in what's expected to be a close race.
Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.
Rep. Summer Lee, D-Penn., won a tough primary battle in the state's 12th congressional district against Bhavini Patel, a member of the Edgewood Borough Council in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania.
But those weren't the only tight races on Tuesday. Here's a recap of the USA TODAY Network's live coverage of the latest primaries.
Eugene DePasquale secures Democratic bid for attorney general
Eugene DePasquale, the former state auditor general, beat a crowded field of opponents to win the Democratic primary for the open attorney general seat. He will face Republican David Sunday in what’s expected to be competitive general election race.
- Karissa Waddick
David Sunday wins GOP attorney general primary
David Sunday, a York County district attorney, beat state house member Craig Williams in the Republican primary. He’s set to face off against Democrat Eugene DePasquale in the November election.
Republican Ryan McKenzie wins primary in Pennsylvania's 7th District
Ryan McKenzie won the GOP primary to challenge Democratic Rep. Susan Wild for the Lehigh, Pennsylvania, area congressional seat in November. The seat in the state’s 7th District is a top target for Republicans in November.
-Karissa Waddick
Janelle Stelson to face GOP Rep. Scott Perry in PA’s 10th District
Democrat Janelle Stelson will challenge Republican Rep. Scott Perry for Pennsylvania’s 10th Congressional seat in November. Stelson beat five Democratic competitors in the primary.
A former news anchor, Stelson is aiming to win over independents and moderate conservatives in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, district to defeat Perry in the general election. The Cook Political Report has labeled the race as leaning in Perry’s favor.
Rep. Summer Lee fights off challenger in PA’s 12th District
Democratic Rep. Summer Lee beat Bhavini Patel in the primary for the state’s 12th district. Her win comes as a potential positive sign for other progressives in Congress who are facing challenges from moderate Democrats over their opposition to additional U.S. military aid for Israel.
Lee’s advocacy for a ceasefire in Gaza became a central theme of the campaign. Her opponent argued that Lee’s criticism of Israel hurt Biden’s reelection efforts. But those arguments ultimately did not win over voters.
Moderate Republican Brian Fitzpatrick fends off challenger in GOP race for 1st District
Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick defeated right-wing challenger Mark Houck in the Bucks County congressional primary, according to a call by the Associated Press.
The race was viewed as a test of how important the issue of abortion could be for the Republican Party’s base in 2024. Fitzpatrick is a widely regarded as a moderate Republican. Houck advocated for a near total ban on abortions, while Fitzpatrick has called for compromise.

David McCormick clinches GOP primary for closely watched Senate seat

More: Pennsylvania Statewide and Presidential Primary Results
Where are Biden and Trump?
Neither Joe Biden nor Donald Trump campaigned in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, despite it being a major general election target for both candidates.
Instead, Trump appeared in a New York City courtroom for the second day of witness testimony in his hush money trial. And Biden delivered a speech in Tampa, Florida , attempting to tie Trump to the southern state’s law banning abortion after about six weeks of pregnancy.
Both candidates traveled to Pennsylvania last week for major campaign stops ahead of the primary.
– Karissa Waddick
Is Dean Phillips on the Pennsylvania ballot?
Yes – but the Minnesota congressman is no longer running against Joe Biden for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination. Phillips, the former chair of the Talenti gelato empire, suspended his longshot bid against Biden in early March after suffering a string of double-digit defeats.
Pennsylvania was in the process of printing its primary ballots at the time he dropped out.
Will Pennsylvania Democrats vote “uncommitted” over Israel-Gaza war?
Pennsylvania does not have an “uncommitted” option on its presidential primary ballot like other states. But that isn’t likely to stop Democrats who plan to cast a protest vote opposing Joe Biden’s handling of the Israel and Hamas war.
The group Uncommitted PA is encouraging Democrats to write-in “uncommitted” on their ballot to advocate for an immediate ceasefire in the war. However, it may be difficult to gauge the impact of the effort. The state election office is unlikely to report a tally of the write-in votes.
Will Pennsylvania Democrats vote “uncommitted” over Gaza war?
Donald trump endorsed david mccormick in pennsylvania senate primary.
Before he entered the courtroom for his New York hush money trial on Tuesday, Trump urged voters to the polls in Pennsylvania.
Trump supported GOP Senate candidate David McCormick in his campaign to unseat Democratic Sen. Bob Casey.
“It’s very important to let them that we’re coming on Nov. 5, we’re coming big,” Trump said. “Pennsylvania get out and vote.”
Polling shows Trump and Biden in virtual tie
With less than seven months until the general election, a RealClearPolitics average of national polls shows the presidential race between Joe Biden and Donald Trump in a dead heat.
The average, calculated based on polls published between mid-March and mid-April, has Trump as 44.6% and Biden at 44.4%. The margin of error of +/- 0.2 is equal to the gap between the two candidates.
Who is Janelle Stelson?
Janelle Stelson, a former new anchor, is running as a Democrat in the state's 10th Congressional District. Her name recognition means she's looking like the frontrunner in the race, though she was also a longtime registered Republican who switched her registration last year.
Moderate Republican fights to keep seat as GOP battles over abortion
In Pennsylvania’s 1 st Congressional District, longtime Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances — including in cases of rape and incest.
Mark Houck, Fitzpatrick’s opponent, was acquitted of criminal charges stemming from an altercation at an abortion clinic. The incident reportedly inspired him to run for public office. A devout Catholic, Houck co-founded the men's religious group The King's Men. He's worked as an author, motivational speaker and human resources manager.
Fitzpatrick is a moderate Republican. He is one of a handful of Republican representatives serving in districts that Biden won in 2020.
The primary race could demonstrate just how important the issue of abortion is for the Republican Party’s base.
Donald Trump and Joe Biden aren't the only candidates competing in 2024
The rematch between Joe Biden and President Donald Trump is top of mind for most voters across the country this election season. But down-ballot races – including congressional and state-level races – are also sure to have a major impact.
And some already are.
In a competitive special election for a state house seat in deep-red Alabama last month, Democrat Marilyn Lands won by nearly 25-points . Lands made abortion and in-vitro fertilization access a central point of her campaign. Her win was seen as a testament to the salience of those issues for voters in 2024.
Rep. Summer Lee faces primary challenger over Israel-Hamas war
A Democratic primary for Pennsylvania’s 12th Congressional District could reveal just how salient the Israel and Hamas war is for Democratic voters – particularly in swing areas of the country.
First-term progressive Rep. Summer Lee, who was among the early advocates calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, is facing a primary challenge from moderate Bhavini Patel over her opposition to the war.
Patel, a 29-year-old municipal council member, has framed the incumbent's criticism of Israel as detrimental to Biden’s re-election efforts
Malcolm Kenyatta and Mark Pinsley fight to compete against Tim DeFoor
State Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta and Lehigh County Controller Mark Pinsley are the two Democrats competing to face off against Pennsylvania's Auditor General Tim DeFoor.
Kenyatta previously ran for Senate in Pennsylvania, finishing third in the primary now-Sen. John Fetterman won in 2022.
How many delegates does Joe Biden have?
Joe Biden has picked up 3,078 delegates as he seeks another term in the White House. He needed 1,968 to clinch the Democratic nomination.
Biden is widely expected to win the Democratic primary in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, which would grant him 159 additional delegates.
When are the 2024 conventions?
The Republican Convention will run from July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
The Democratic Convention will take place a month later, from August 19-22, in Chicago, Illinois.
Which states haven’t held primaries yet?
While the results of the Republican and Democratic presidential primaries are all but set, a number of states still haven’t voted in either party’s race. Those states include Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska, West Virginia, Kentucky, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The District of Columbia held it’s GOP primary in March, but Democrats in the territory will cast their ballots in June.
Can I vote in Pennsylvania?
First-time voters or individuals who are casting a ballot in a new precinct will need to show identification, according to the Pennsylvania Department of State.
Acceptable identification includes a driver's license, student ID, a firearm permit, a current paycheck and more.
It is a closed primary , meaning that only voters who are registered Democratic or Republican may vote on candidates in their respective parties.
– Teresa Boeckel
What are the key Pennsylvania House races to watch?
- 1st District: Longtime Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick is being challenged on his right flank by Mark Houk, a candidate who believes abortions should be banned in nearly all circumstances – including in cases of rape and incest. The primary race could demonstrate just how important the issue of abortion is for the Republican Party’s base.
- 7th District: Three Republicans – Kevin Dellicker, Ryan Mackenzie and Maria Montero – are competing to take on Democratic Rep. Susan Wild. Her seat is a top target for the GOP in November.
- 10th District: Six Democrats are vying for the Democratic nomination to challenge GOP Rep. Scott Perry in the November election. Perry was a former chair of the Freedom Caucus, one of the most conservative factions of the Republican Party and was a key figure in efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Democrats see an opportunity to flip the seat in the general election.
- 12th District: Bhavini Patel is running against incumbent Rep. Summer Lee with a message centered on the Israel and Hamas war. Patel has cast herself as a more moderate, pro-Israel candidate and has criticized Lee for her opposition to providing U.S. military aid to Israel.
Who is running for Pennsylvania Attorney General?
Five Democrats and two Republicans are also battling for the open state attorney general position , once held by Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro. Michelle Henry, who is completing the remainder of Shapiro’s term since he was elected governor in 2022, is not running for the position.
Candidates in the Democratic primary include Eugene DePasquale, Keir Bradford-Grey, Joe Khan, Jared Solomon and Jack Stollsteimer.
On the Republican side, state house member Craig Williams is facing off against York County District Attorney Dave Sunday.
− Karissa Waddick

Abortion fight plays out in Pennsylvania attorney general election
Abortion has roiled down-ballot races across the country, and Pennsylvania is no exception. Reproductive rights have been a major topic in the attorney general’s race.
All five Democratic candidates for attorney general have committed to protecting the right to abortion and access to FDA-approved medications such as mifepristone . Meanwhile, the Republican candidates have said that they do not believe the state constitution guarantees the right to an abortion.
As attorney general, both sides would leave the issue for the state legislature to decide.
What time do the polls close in Pennsylvania?
Polls close in Pennsylvania at 8 p.m. ET. Anyone in line by 8 p.m. can vote.
Absentee and mail-in ballots also must be returned and received by election officials by 8 p.m.

- David Cameron’s Diplomatic Tour to Central Asia Ushers ‘New Era’ in UK Relations with Region
By Assel Satubaldina in Editor’s Picks , International on 26 April 2024
ASTANA—This week, the United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Cameron embarked on a diplomatic tour across the five Central Asian republics, which Cameron himself said opens a “new era” in the relations between Central Asia and the United Kingdom. Starting in Tajikistan, Cameron visited the Kyrgyz Republic, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia.

Speaking about the broader purpose of his visit to the Central Asian region, Cameron emphasized the desire for partnership with the region.
“I want to make a broader point about this visit that I’m making to the Central Asian republics this week and that is that we are not saying to Kazakhstan or any other country that you have to make a choice, or we’re asking you not to choose your partnership and trade with Russia or China, or with anyone else. We’re here because we believe you should be able to make a choice to partner with us in a way that is good for both our security and our prosperity,” said Cameron after his meeting with Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister – Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu on April 24.
Historic visit
It has been 11 years since David Cameron’s last visit to Kazakhstan. In 2013, Cameron became the first U.K. Prime Minister to pay a state visit to Kazakhstan. The visit this week comes a bit more of a year since the visit of James Cleverly to Kazakhstan, whom Cameron replaced as Foreign Secretary in November 2023.

Cameron’s visit to Kazakhstan in 2013 concluded deals worth more than £700 million and resulted in the signing of a joint statement on strategic partnership.
This week’s visit was no less groundbreaking, as Cameron and Kazakhstan’s Deputy Prime Minister – Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu inked a historic Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement. The agreement is designed to strengthen bilateral relations in key sectors, ranging from foreign policy and security, trade and investment, to banking and financial services, employment and social policy, science and education.
“When I visited Kazakhstan as PM 11 years ago, we agreed on our first strategic partnership. Today, we’ve agreed to do even more with a new Cooperation Agreement across education, trade and climate action,” wrote Cameron in his X account.
Besides the milestone agreement, Cameron also announced £50 million (US$62.6 million) of new funding aimed at promoting regional growth and economic resilience and fostering trade and cooperation between the U.K. and Central Asia.
The number of Chevening scholarships for Kazakhstan will also double following Cameron’s visit.
While in Astana, he met with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, visited the Astana International Financial Centre and chatted with students of Astana IT University.
Commercial deals
According to the Bureau of National Statistics, trade between Kazakhstan and the U.K. reached $1.2 billion in 2023, down slightly from $1.8 billion in 2022. Between January and February this year, trade was $99.3 million. Nearly 600 companies with British capital operate in Kazakhstan.

The U.K. is among the top 10 foreign investors in Kazakhstan. British investments made $794.5 million in 2023, up from $661.8 million in 2022. Since 2005, cumulative investments have surpassed $17 billion.
As part of Cameron’s visit, Kazakhstan and the U.K. signed two commercial documents. One is between the Kazakh Ministry of Healthcare, the Almaty city administration, Kazakh Invest National Company, and British AstraZeneca. It is a plan to implement an investment project for contract manufacturing of biotechnological products on Kazakhstan’s territory.
“The signing of the production localization plan is a progressive step towards fulfilling the instructions of the head of state Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to increase the share of domestically produced medicines in the domestic market to 50%, contributing to the improvement of the investment climate and the development of bilateral strategic relations,” said Kazakh Invest in a press statement published on the company’s official website.
AstraZeneca and the Kazakh ministry signed a memorandum of cooperation back in 2021.
“From our side, we have had a long-standing partnership and projects that are supported by both the British Embassy and Kazakh Invest, as well as partnerships with the Ministry of Healthcare. We signed a memorandum in 2021 in London for cooperation in what is called healthcare, specifically within the territory of Kazakhstan, as an Anglo-Swedish company represented here,” said Maria Shipuleva, head of the British company’s representative office in Kazakhstan.

She noted AstraZeneca invested heavily in education.
“From this year, according to the memorandum signed in 2021 in London, we are now starting clinical trials in Kazakhstan. The plan signed today is specifically for the implementation of a project to localize our production here,” she added.
She reiterated the document signed during Cameron’s visit is “aimed directly at producing Kazakhstan’s product, but with technologies that correspond to those of AstraZeneca.”
While she didn’t disclose the specific types of products to be produced at the plant, she confirmed they are aimed at addressing conditions such as diabetes, chronic heart failure, chronic kidney disease, and oncology.
Document on roadside service facilities
As part of the visit of Cameron, the Committee for Highways of the Kazakh Ministry of Transport and Car Park Transformer, a British company specializing in the design and manufacture of innovative solutions for car parks, signed an agreement.
The document envisions the construction of roadside service facilities on the country’s national and international highways. At least 250 service stations will be built to offer a comfortable multi-service environment for all road users.
“These agreements underscore the importance and potential of cooperation between Kazakhstan and the United Kingdom in various sectors of the economy and reflect the commitment of both countries to developing long-term and mutually beneficial partnership relations,” said Kazakh Invest.
U.K. engagement with the region of Central Asia
The visit of David Cameron to Central Asia reflects the growing importance of the region, said Alicia Kearns, chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee at the U.K. Parliament.
“The Foreign Secretary’s visit to Central Asia and Mongolia demonstrates the increasing importance of this geopolitical region, as identified by our report [referring to the committee’s report on U.K. engagement in Central Asia] in November. In order to show the UK’s commitment to the region, we called for engagement with Central Asia at the top of government, including visits from the Prime Minister and Secretaries of State. I am pleased to see that the government has listened to Parliament,” said Kearns.
The committee’s report, called Countries at Crossroads: UK engagement in Central Asia, called for high-level ministerial engagement.
In fact, several key visits have occurred in the past two years. In February 2023, the U.K. Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Kazakhstan, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne, visited the Central Asian nation.
In June 2023, U.K. Minister for Europe Leo Docherty visited Kazakhstan. In September 2023, James Cleverly met with Murat Nurtleu on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
In October 2023, Astana hosted the seventh U.K.-Kazakhstan Strategic Dialogue, chaired by Minister Leo Docherty and Kazakhstan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Roman Vassilenko.
“The deepening of U.K. engagement in Central Asia not only has the potential to be mutually beneficial but also should be seen as a geopolitical imperative,” reads the U.K. Parliament report.
According to Kearns, the visit was also meant to ensure Western sanctions against Russia are not circumvented.
“The Foreign Affairs Committee called for the U.K. to do more to clampdown on illicit finance in the City of London and sanctions evasion via third countries,” she added.
She stressed the need for a separate strategy for trade and investment.
“Increasing the U.K.’s cultural ties with Central Asian countries is crucial. In our report we called for an increase in Chevening scholars and adequate resources for the British Council. I am pleased that the Foreign Secretary has announced a doubling of funding for Chevening scholars and a push to bolster English language skills and increase access to British Council resources,” said Kearns.

Trump’s trial is the latest chapter in the rich history of Lower Manhattan’s courts.
A cluster of downtown buildings has served as the borough’s “epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said a lawyer who has led walking tours of Manhattan courthouses.
By Matthew Mpoke Bigg
- April 26, 2024
For a decade, Robert Pigott, a lawyer, has led walking tours of the courthouses of Manhattan, guiding visitors around landmarks where the city’s rich legal history has played out. Now the trial of Donald J. Trump has added a chapter to the story he gets to tell.
Mr. Pigott’s tours, which he runs in his spare time, revolve around a cluster of downtown buildings that are the borough’s judicial hub. For now, 100 Centre Street — the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, where the former president’s case is being heard — is the focus.
But just down the street on Foley Square sits Manhattan’s most elegant courthouse building, New York’s Supreme Court, with its sweeping flight of 32 stone steps leading up to a series of imposing Corinthian columns. Other court buildings are dotted around nearby.
“The eyes of the nation and the world are trained on criminal court cases in New York County, whether it’s organized crime, Wall Street cases or federal cases,” Mr. Pigott said.
Mr. Trump’s trial is remarkable because it is the first time that a former American president has been criminally prosecuted. The defendant’s status as this year’s presumptive Republican presidential nominee adds a contemporary political dimension.
For Mr. Pigott, 64, who has written a book about the history of the city’s courthouses, the real significance is what it says about the status of a few blocks of Manhattan as a nexus. He pointed out that Mr. Trump’s civil fraud case and defamation case also both played out this year in courthouses within spitting distance of the criminal trial.
“Now, when I arrive at the expanse of Foley Square midway through the walk, I can point to something truly remarkable — three different courthouses where the same former U.S. president has been on trial,” he said.
Mr. Trump’s trial shows how politics, celebrity and the location of the court itself can reinforce one another to make a big story bigger. New York’s status as a media hub increases the spotlight during high-profile cases and the high-profile cases held over the decades have, in turn, made the city’s courts an attractive setting for fictional courtroom dramas.
In these buildings, a jury convicted Anna Sorokin for grand larceny in 2019 for posing as a German heiress to swindle wealthy New Yorkers — a case that almost by definition blurred fact and fiction. Naturally, the tale has since been turned into a series on Netflix.
The cluster is also where a group of Black and Latino teenagers, then known as the Central Park Five, were wrongly convicted in 1990 of raping a jogger — a case also rendered as a Netflix series — and where Mark David Chapman pleaded guilty in 1981 to murdering the musician John Lennon.
The New York Supreme Court building, a trial-level court, often serves as a symbol of the court complex. It featured prominently in the television show “Law and Order" and the 1957 courtroom film classic “12 Angry Men,” to cite just two examples.
Mr. Pigott, however, is drawn to the history of the legal system before the 20th century and how it evolved through its buildings. The first stop on the tours he runs is a sidewalk nearby with glass blocks embedded in it, through which it is possible to see the excavations of a courthouse built by the Dutch in the colonial era.
The authorities in New York built a judicial infrastructure in this part of Lower Manhattan starting mainly in the 19th century, when the area experienced significant gang violence, he said.
“This one-block radius has been the epicenter of criminal justice in New York since the 1830s,” said Mr. Pigott.
For all the drama associated with the Trump trial, the streets outside the criminal courthouse have generally been calm this week. Reporters and members of the public have lined up for entry to the courthouse. And on Thursday morning, Collect Pond Park across the street, which has been designated for protests, was empty. Its only occupants were some police officers and a few pigeons.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations
By Claudia Looi 2 Comments
Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.
Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.
Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.
The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean
To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow. Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.
The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:
1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.
2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

6. Novoslobodskaya Metro Station was built in 1952. It has 32 stained glass murals with brass borders.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

8. Mayakovskaya Metro Station built in 1938. It was named after Russian poet Vladmir Mayakovsky. This is one of the most beautiful metro stations in the world with 34 mosaics painted by Alexander Deyneka.

9. Belorusskaya Metro Station is named after the people of Belarus. In the picture below, there are statues of 3 members of the Partisan Resistance in Belarus during World War II. The statues were sculpted by Sergei Orlov, S. Rabinovich and I. Slonim.
10. Teatralnaya Metro Station (Theatre Metro Station) is located near the Bolshoi Theatre.

Was Taylor Swift's Eras Tour in Detroit bigger than NFL draft crowds? It's complicated
How does the record-breaking attendance for the 2024 NFL draft on Thursday compare to other peak days in Detroit? It's hard to tell given the crowd estimates are created with different methodologies and geographic boundaries.
Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour visit to the Motor City last June spanned two days, with two sold-out shows of about 60,000 fans each day at Ford Field. But that is the number of people attending the concert, not the number of people estimated visiting Detroit's business district. All told for just one day Swift was in the city, June 10, nearly 350,000 people flocked to Detroit's Central Business District. Motor City Pride Fest was that day at Hart Plaza, too.
That's higher than Thursday's draft crowd of about 275,000 fans — the largest daily NFL draft attendance on record, according to NFL officials. But 275,000 is the NFL's estimate, which is measured differently over a different geographic area. Magnetometers or metal detectors that fans walk through to enter the draft areas provide real-time crowd estimates, according to an e-mail from an NFL spokesperson.
Swift day data was compiled by the Downtown Detroit Partnership from Placer.ai , a firm that analyses foot traffic data from mobile phones.
The daily estimates include the number of people visiting or working in Detroit's Central Business District − an area bounded by the Lodge Freeway (west), Interstate 75 (north), I-375 (east) and the Detroit River (south). The median number of people visiting or working in the central business district between April 1, 2023 and April 7, 2024 was 102,000; foot traffic was higher at about 122,000 people on weekend days.
Back to the draft
Thursday's 275,000 attendance figure includes fans spanning from Campus Martius Park to Hart Plaza and satellite viewing areas such as the Corner Ballpark (Detroit's former Tiger Stadium). If the draft attendance in Detroit continues at this pace over the weekend, Detroit is on track to break the 600,000 record for total attendance, previously held by Nashville in 2019.
Nashville previously held the NFL draft record for daily attendance, too, with about 200,000 fans in 2019 .
Within the last year, people visited Detroit for a variety of jam-packed concerts, sporting and other events. Pink set a record for a reserved seat concert at Comerica Park , with more than 45,000 fans and 207,955 people in the central business district; Detroit Lions' home games extended into the playoffs ; Taylor Swift, Beyoncé , Metallica and many more brought thousands of people to downtown Detroit.
Where the record NFL draft in Detroit stands in relation will have to wait until the draft is over and more comparable data is available next week.
