The Top 10 Things to See and Do in Arequipa, Peru

Arequipa

As Peru’s most beautiful city (sorry, Cusco), there are a plethora of exciting things to do in and around Arequipa. From coming face to face with an ice maiden, to wandering around a colorful monastery or spotting condors in a jaw-dropping canyon, here’s 10 things you mustn’t miss on your next trip to Arequipa.

1. stand awestruck in the plaza de armas.

Arguably the most grandiose plaza in Peru, Arequipa’s central square is guaranteed to impress. Set among leafy palm trees and flanked by stunning colonial churches, the Plaza de Armas is the true heart of Arequipa and the perfect vantage point to appreciate why it is known as the “White City.”

2. Get closer to God in the Arequipa Cathedral

Cathedral, Church

Towering over the plaza is the impressive 17th century city cathedral, Arequipa’s largest and most important church. Stretching the entire length of the plaza, this mammoth house of worship in largely built from sillar, a type of white volcanic rock that is common throughout the city center. 3. Admire the Iglesia de la Compania

A more modest although arguably more interesting church is Iglesia de la Compania, located on the opposite corner of the plaza. The beautifully carved facade of this elegant Jesuit church is the main attraction, a masterful display of the churrigueresque style of design which was first made famous by the beautiful churches of Seville.

5. Yanahuara

For a different perspective of the city, head away from the center towards Yanahuara. Here you’ll find an eclectic mix of colonial era churches and elegant archways surrounding a leafy plaza, all with unbeatable views of the majestic ice-capped volcanoes that encircle the city. 6. Museo Santuarios Andinos

Welcome to the city’s premier museum, the final resting place of a local celebrity dubbed the “Ice Maiden.” Guided tours in English, Spanish or French shepherd visitors past a number of artifacts from a 1995 expedition that led to the discovery of the body of a 12 year old Inca girl who was sacrificed to the gods back in the 1450s. The finale is a close up view of the gruesome remains of “Juanita.”

7. Soak up the surroundings

With such majestic surroundings at every turn, it makes sense to take your time and soak up the glory of Peru’s most beautiful city. Meander between leafy plaza, stroll down the happening pedestrian thoroughfare known as Paseo Mercaderes , or just watch life slowly pass by in the city’s numerous hip cafés, bars, and restaurants.

8. Marvel at the Condors

The greatest attraction of the region is not some church built from volcanic stone. Rather, tourists flock to the region to admire the majestic condor in full flight, marveling as these massive flying beasts swoop right past onlookers in search of hot updrafts which allow them to effortlessly glide around the canyon. Although it is possible to visit in just one day, a combined Colca Canyon hike is the best option.

9. Colca Canyon

Peru’s answer to the Grand Canyon, Colca is one of the deepest canyons in the world at a staggering 3,270 meters (10,730 ft). Tours through the region last two to three days, depending on the amount of time spent hiking each day, and pass through breathtaking scenery as the glorious condor flies overhead. Those with a serious adventurous streak should consider scaling El Misti , the ominous volcano that towers over the city. A strenuous two day ascent reaches heights of 5,822 m (19,101 ft), meaning proper acclimatization is of utmost importance.

The 15 Most Unmissable Things to Do in Arequipa, Peru’s Striking White City

By Author Graham Minser

Posted on Last updated: 6th October 2023

“You should have been here fifteen years ago, before everyone found out” says a jaded traveler, bellied up to the bar in any popular tourist destination. While some destinations may have lost a bit of their allure as more and more travelers descend on them, the same cannot be said for Arequipa (ar-ay-KEE-pa), Peru’s most beautiful city.

If you’re seeking a place away from the crowds yet full of unique things to do, Arequipa is among the must sees in Peru.

If you ask Peruvians across the country about the city, the first things they will likely mention are the beautifully stark architecture, built with the white volcanic rock called sillar , and the cuisine, which stands out in a country already renowned for its range and quality of food.

This and more should put Arequipa on nearly any traveller’s itinerary. The White City often convinces its visitors to stay longer than originally planned, and for good reason.

While the atmosphere is generally laid-back, the city and surrounding region offer plenty of sights and adventures to keep visitors busy for days or even weeks on end. Without further ado, here are my recommendations for the best things to do in Arequipa.

Click to navigate this article:

1. Take in the beautiful Plaza de Armas

The city’s Plaza de Armas , arguably the most picturesque in the country, is a great place to begin your exploration of the city. The well-manicured square features a large fountain, towering palm trees, is surrounded by a handsome colonnaded arcade and is directly in front of the striking Basilica Cathedral de Arequipa .

The plaza is more relaxed than others in Peru, with fewer vendors and hawkers than in Cusco or Lima. Locals and tourists alike enjoy finding a shady bench with a book or camera to while away an afternoon. The streets surrounding the Plaza de Armas are closed to motor traffic, further adding to its status as the social hub of the centre. Many options of what to do in Arequipa are within a short walk of the plaza.

2. Check out the gorgeous Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa

When it comes to architecture, Arequipa possesses an astounding collection of beautiful structures, the foremost of which are its churches. The massive Basilica Catedral de Arequipa is the oldest and most significant of the city’s buildings. Originally built in the 1540s, the cathedral has been leveled and rebuilt a number of times due to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

Like most buildings in the historic centre, the cathedral is carved ornately from the white volcanic sillar stone. The interior of the cathedral is equally impressive with its vaulted ceilings, ornate altar, and well-maintained pipe organ. The cathedral is particularly stunning when it is illuminated at night.

3. Visit the other beautiful churches in the city centre

Although the cathedral is certainly the crown jewel of the city, the centre has many other beautifully built and maintained churches that warrant a visit.

The interior courtyard and cloisters of Church of La Compania, Arequipa with extraordinarily detailed carvings on the stone

Among these are the Iglesia Santa Teresa , Iglesia de La Compañia , Iglesia de San Agustin and Iglesia de San Francisco . Some are spartan in construction while others have gold-leaf altars and walls of imported marble.

4. Tour the Monasterio de Santa Catalina

Of special note is the Monasterio de Santa Catalina , a centuries-old working monastery, occupying spacious grounds a couple blocks north of the Plaza de Armas. Built over four hundred years ago, the monastery has been a central feature of the city’s cultural and spiritual character since its foundation.

The complex houses more than four hundred pieces of religious art, many of which are showcased in the lovely gallery exhibit. The monastery is largely self-sufficient and is effectively a city within a city. Visitors may enjoy the cafe as well as a trattoria specialising in both local and Italian cuisine. Tours of the grounds are interesting and informative, and are offered in several languages.

5. Treat yourself to an outstanding meal at a local picantería

Although Peruvian cuisine is perhaps most famous for its ceviche, the food in Arequipa is well-known throughout the country. Among the most famous local dishes is chupe de camaron , a hearty broth not dissimilar to a Thai yellow curry, with prawns and potatoes. Another popular choice is rocoto relleno , a spicy local pepper stuffed with mince, veggies and melted cheese.

What previous clients have said:

Steph’s help laying out an itinerary for Chile was huge toward us having a great trip.  She listened to our interests and compiled a framework that we could follow to make our plans.  She included many practical tips as well as numerous options. She truly saved us many, many hours of research.

On Sundays, locals flock to their favorite spot for adobo , a rich broth over slow-roasted pork. Wash it all down with some locally-brewed chicha , a sweet fermented corn drink often flavoured with cloves.

For an excellent local experience, we recommend heading to Picantería Victoria in the centre, or alternatively Picantería la Dorita or La Nueva Palomino across the river in Yanahuara. On Sundays, a reservation is recommended, as the popular restaurants fill up early with families.

6. Peruse the local goods at Mercado San Camilo

At the southeast end of the centre lies the city’s primary marketplace. Mercado San Camilo specialises in local fruit, vegetables, chocolate, meat, and dairy. There are also stalls for locally-made hats, shoes and textiles.

A woman peels fruit at her stall in the Mercado San Camilo, a must-visit place in Arequipa

The market is also a good place to grab a quick local lunch, from grilled chicken and sandwiches to ceviche and rocoto relleno , best paired with a freshly-made fruit juice. It opens daily from 6am to 6pm, but is most lively in the mornings.

7. Visit Plaza de Yanahuara

Across the Río Chili from the centre is the lovely and peaceful district of Yanahuara . Its heart is the idyllic plaza of the same name, shaded by palm trees and encircled by cafes and restaurants. On the eastern edge of the square is the popular Mirador de Yanahuara , which affords breathtaking views of the historical city centre and El Misti in the distance.

A block north of the viewpoint is Tío Dario , a superb spot for lunch or dinner which specialises in both local dishes and seafood brought in fresh from the coast.

8. Taste and learn about pisco , Peru’s national spirit

Greece has ouzo and Scotland its whisky, and Peru is equally proud of its local distillation, pisco . Made with local grapes, pisco is distilled in small to medium batches and bottled without additives to ensure superior quality. The name derives from the clay amphorae made by the native population in coastal Peru for over two thousand years, which happened to be ideal for storing and aging the liquor.

Two pisco sours

The best place to both learn about and sample the spirit is Museo del Pisco , just behind the cathedral in the city centre. With an impressive collection of local and regional vintages, the knowledgeable staff will talk you through their collection, make a recommendation or whip up an expertly-crafted cocktail.

9. Spend an afternoon touring the local museums

Although the temperatures in Arequipa are pleasant, the midday sun takes it toll while you walk around. Beat the heat and head to a local museum or two in the hours when the shade disappears. The city has a number of archaeological museums with interesting exhibits. Among them are El Museo San Agustín and the Museo Arqueol ógico UNSA . Other museums worth visiting are the Museo de la Catedral and the Museo de Arte Virreinal Santa Teresa .

10. Marvel at Juanita, the famous Incan mummy

Museo Santuarios Andinos houses the world-famous mummy dubbed Juanita , the remains of a 12 to 15-year-old girl sacrificed and offered to the Incan gods at the top of Mount Ampato over five hundred years ago. The freezing temperature kept her remains remarkably well-preserved.

11. Walk around the city with a camera at dusk

By late afternoon, the lighting in the old city is perfect for a stroll with a camera. The Plaza de Armas and Monasterio de Santa Catalina are great spots, but perhaps the best place is around Plaza Campo Redondo in San L ázaro , the oldest area in the city with its narrow streets winding past whitewashed sillar walls beneath wooden balconies.

Good opportunities for photography are not limited to the old town. Yanahuara and Parque Selva Alegre showcase lovely scenes at dawn or dusk, especially towards El Misti and Chachani , another imposing volcano north of the city. Without a doubt, capturing the White City behind the lens is one of the top activities in Arequipa.

12. Organise an old town pub crawl

As it has in many cities around the world, craft beer has taken off in Arequipa. The burgeoning microbrew scene offers no shortage of options for those looking to tie one on. The best brewpubs are all located on or near Plaza Campo Redondo on the northern edge of the city centre.

Melkim Taproom features at least ten beers on tap, both their own and of other local brewers. Nowhere also offers several options from the barrel, with a focus on fruit beer. Nearby is Chelawasi Public House with a large and varied offering of local brews, as well as exceptional pub food. Last is Pataccala , a Belgian-owned operation with an impressive list of rare imported draft and bottled beers not easily found outside Belgium.

13. Climb El Misti

Dominating the city skyline at 19,101 feet (5822m), El Misti is a spectacular sight for many miles in all directions. Intrepid travelers may wonder if its climbable. It is indeed! Companies focused on Arequipa tourism operate in the city centre and organise two-day ascents to the summit.

Arequipa's Cathedral rises out of the city with the Misti volcano behind

Not for the faint of heart, El Misti is a challenging climb, if not a terribly technical one. We recommend going with Pablo Tour , which offers transport, camping and climbing gear, food and water, and expert guides. You will need to bring your own water, sleeping bag (available for hire), sunglasses, sun cream, toilet paper, and multiple layers of warm clothes as it gets quite cold near the summit.

Most groups reach the summit around noon on the second day, and the views are truly spectacular.

14. Enjoy the beauty and isolation of Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca

Another day trip a couple hour drive from the city centre is the Reserva Nacional de Salinas y Aguada Blanca . This stunning national reserve showcases otherworldly high-altitude landscapes, wild herds of alpacas and llamas, flocks of flamingos, and the moss-like yareta plant.

Accessible by driving northeast around El Misti, the reserve covers a huge tract of land, meaning you’ll probably have a large area to yourself. This also means you’ll need to come prepared, either by hiring a capable 4WD vehicle in good condition, or going with a reputable tour company.

arequipa tourist places

For the DIY option, we recommend going with Mountain Rent a Car , who offer well-maintained cars and trucks capable of getting you to and from remote locations outside the city.

For a guided tour, we again recommend Pablo Tour , who take travelers to Salinas Lagoon , but also offer the option to tailor a trip across the reserve.

15. Take in the sunset at a rooftop bar or cafe

The ideal way to end the day and begin your evening in Arequipa is on one of the many rooftop terraces facing the setting sun. For a coffee head to Puku Puku for anything from a flat white to a cold brew. For a beer or cocktail, try Sunset Rooftop Bar for stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains – certainly one of the best things to see in Peru.

The Basilica Cathedral in the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa, Peru

Alternatively, terraces facing northeast towards El Misti and Chachani offer an equally mesmerizing view as the westering sun paints the landscape. Waya Lookout Rooftop Bar on the Plaza de Armas is an ideal place for a sundowner, overlooking the Cathedral and El Misti. Pataccala also has a terrace, facing north towards Chachani.

Things to know before visiting Arequipa

Inspired by our guide? Here are some of the key things to consider before planning a trip to Arequipa. It’s also worth checking out our selection of one-week to one-month travel itineraries for visiting Peru as well as finding out t he best time to visit Peru according the weather .

Where is Arequipa?

In an isolated valley in Southern Peru, nestled between towering volcanoes and high desert, bisected by the Río Chili , sits Peru’s second-largest city. The first thing you’ll notice when walking around is Arequipa’s volcano, El Misti , visible from everywhere in the city. A world away from Lima, Arequipa is safe at night and its locals are welcoming to visitors. It is closer geographically and climatically to northern Chile and Bolivia than to the rest of Peru. It sits at 2,335 metres (7661 feet), which is around 900 metres (3,000 feet) lower than Cusco. Arequipa is well-connected with Lima, with several direct flights linking the cities. There are also several direct flights each week between Arequipa and Cusco. For those who prefer overland travel, Cruz del Sur has comfortable buses connecting the city to Lima, Cusco, and Puno on Lake Titicaca.

Is Arequipa worth visiting and what is it known for?

If you were to make a list of cool places in Peru, Arequipa should be at or near the top for most travellers. It is a destination made for those seeking adventure and the outdoors, top-quality gastronomy, unique architecture, a stunning natural setting, and is a relaxed, easily navigable city to explore. It’s also packed full of history. During the years of the Spanish viceroyalty, Arequipa was an important regional capital, a fact reflected in the amount the Spanish crown invested in its architecture. Much of the silver mined in Bolivia passed through the city en route to the coast, ultimately bound for the royal coffers in Spain.

How many days do you need in Arequipa?

That depends on whether you plan on exploring the region beyond the city. For travelers content to enjoy the pleasures of the city, three to five days should be sufficient. If you plan on climbing Misti, visiting the Salinas y Aguada Blanca reserve, or trekking in the Colca Canyon , five to ten days would be about right, depending on how many forays you plan on making outside the city.

When’s the best time to visit Arequipa?

The region has two distinct seasons: the dry season from April through mid-November which sees almost zero precipitation, and the summer wet season which lasts from December through March and is characterised by more frequent cloud cover and occasional rain. The climate in this part of the world is extremely dry, and Arequipa sees over 300 days of sunshine a year. The altitude of Arequipa is 2,335 metres (7661 feet). Although this is rarefied air, it’s around 900 metres (3,000 feet) lower than Cusco.

Is Arequipa a safe place to visit?

Among cities in South America with a sizable population, Arequipa ranks as one of the safest. Violent crime is virtually non-existent and the city centre is safe on foot at all hours. While the city is quite secure, it is of course important to observe common sense and avoid being a target by flashing cash and valuables, and to avoid walking alone in the small hours.

28 Things to Do in Arequipa, Peru, the White City

When we were planning our South America trip to Peru , the best things to do in Arequipa weren’t at the top of the list.

We had Machu Picchu on the brain after a few failed attempts to see the bucket list wonder. We pondered things to do in Lima, Peru’s largest city, despite a week spent there years prior.

After some more involved planning and a deeper dive into the best of Peru, we talked ourselves into four full days in Arequipa, the country’s second most populous city. I’m so glad we did. It was one of our favorite stops on our repeat trip to Peru.

What is Arequipa known for?

Arequipa is known for its colorful colonial architecture, particularly the white volcanic rock used in many of its buildings. That’s how it got its nickname, “The White City.” The rock was quarried from the Misti volcano, also known as El Misti.

Many of the best places to visit in Arequipa will come with a backdrop of El Misti. It makes trips here even more atmospheric.

A beautiful view of El Misti, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

Arequipa is also famous for picturesque attractions like the Plaza de Armas de Arequipa and the Santa Catalina Monastery and as a gateway to the Colca Canyon.

How many days do you need in Arequipa, Peru?

You need at least two days in Arequipa to hit the main attractions in the city. Add a day if you’d like to tack on any day trips with Arequipa as your base. This includes the Colca Canyon.

With just one day in Arequipa, you should focus on the main square in the city center, the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, and a few eating stops to taste what the city is all about.

We had four days for Arequipa and our own Colca Canyon day trip. It felt like enough time to tick off the main Arequipa attractions and then some, but still left us wanting more. This is Peru’s second most populated city, after all, coming in right behind Lima.

A river view in Arequipa, one of the top things to do in Areaquipa, Peru

How to Get to Arequipa

To get to Arequipa, you’ll fly into Alfredo Rodriguez Ballon International Airport. Most American cities will connect through Lima’s Jorge Chávez International Airport.

There are also various long-distance from various locations in Peru into Arequipa and long-distance trains from Puno or Cusco. Arequipa is quite well-connected.

Note: If you’re planning a trip to explore things to do in Cusco and things to do in Puno while you’re in Peru, Arequipa is a great starting point. The city sits at 7,660 feet of elevation. That’s not insignificant, but you’ll be able to ease into the altitutde vs. starting at 11,152 feet (Cusco) or 12,556 feet (Puno).

What are the top things to do in Arequipa?

The top things to do in Arequipa are:

  •  Plaza de Armas
  • Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa
  • Museo Santuarios Andinos
  • Monasterio de la Recoleta
  • Monasterio de Santa Catalina
  • Iglesia de San Francisco
  • Yanahuara Lookout
  • Mundo Alpaca

GIMME MY AREQUIPA THINGS TO DO MAP!

1. walk the historical center..

The historial center, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

The city center is the perfect place to get yourself situated and potentially a little amped about the rest of your Arequipa to-do list. If it feels a little European that’s not an accident. The architecture here is a blend of Spanish, colonial, and neoclassical styles.

There’s a lot going on here, but you’ll likely start trips to Arequipa in the city center anyway. It’s a hub for shops, tourism, and sneaky entrances to rooftop terraces with stellar views of the city.

2. People-watch at the Plaza de Armas de Arequipa.

The Plaza de Armas, one of the best things to do in Arequipa, Peru

The city’s main square is an Arequipa must-see anyway, but it’s especially fun to linger here if the weather’s nice.

Note: If you’re booking a guided tour of the local attractions, you’ll likely meet on the plaza.

This is the city’s hub for urban life, Arequipa events, and general gathering. By that last bit I mean locals like to just hang here because it’s scenic as heck. You’ll have mountain views all around while you’re at it, so join them all in the lingering.

3. Don’t miss the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa.

The Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

This impressive cathedral is located on the Plaza de Armas, so it’s an easy add-on to your Arequipa itinerary while you’re in the area. There are guided tours offered in the daytime with free hours for cathedral visits in the evenings.

You can’t visit the museum inside without a guide, so I’d recommend having someone show you around. They’ll walk you through rooms of bejeweled religious artifacts, the church’s impressive interior, and the bell towers at the top.

Fun fact: There are a lot of really good views in this city. In fact, I can’t think of a place with scenic viewpoints than Arequipa.

We went in the daytime to get the view at the top and were definitely impressed. Keep in mind that this is a church tour, so leave the workout tanks at your hotel. Better yet, leave them at home. Those armpits are just too much for this town.

4. Make a repeat visit to the main square at night.

Arequipa's basilica at night, one of the top things to do in Arequipa

If you’re here for a few days, return to the main square after dark to see the cathedral all lit up. It was one of my favorite things to do in Arequipa at night. The square comes alive at night, too, with locals and visitors.

5. Take a guided tour of Arequipa.

Arequipa is easy enough to explore on your own, but if you’re dealing with bad jetlag or altitude sickness, a guided walking tour of the city may sound pretty nice. Here are a few highly rated options:

6. Eat pizza at Las Gringas.

At a pizza shop, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

Our first meal in Arequipa was pizza and I have no regrets about that. The name of the place suited the situation quite well, too. Las Gringas is a favorite around here for its adorable courtyard, fresh ingredients, and excellent service.

I needed a pick-me-up so I ordered my spinach-heavy pie with a hazelnut latte. Brian had to try a Peruvian IPA with his meal lovers’ choice. We finished every last crumb.

Fun fact: Pizza does a great job fueling you for the city’s hills .

7. Meet Juanita at the Museo Santuarios Andinos.

Museo Santuarios Andinos, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

This small museum’s main attraction is Juanita, or the Girl of the Ampato. She was sacrificed as part of an Incan ritual somewhere around 1,400-1,500 AD. What you’ll see today is her well-preserved corpse thanks to volcanic activity in the region.

No, I didn’t take a photo of her. It felt invasive. That said, it was definitely a striking sight.

You can’t visit the museum without a guide, but you can pay whatever you’d like for that guide on top of a reasonable museum admission.

8. Climb the bell tower at Monasterio de la Recoleta.

A woman poses at the bell tower of Monasterio de la Recoleta, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru.

You may see this one labeled as the Monasterio y Museo de la Recoleta on your map apps. This former monastery a short walk from the historic city center was rebuilt several times following damaging earthquakes.

Today, the museum houses a pretty big collection of Amazonian art and artifacts. Start by perusing the historical goods and stunning library, a collection that holds over 20,000 works. From there, head to my favorite part, the views of the city and El Misti from the bell tower.

There are only two people allowed at the lookout, or mirador, at a time, but we didn’t compete with anyone on our visit. The process to get up there boasts some speakeasy vibes.

Ring a little buzzer for staff upon arrival, pay your monies, and head on up. Take as much time up there as you’d like.

9. See the vibrant colors of Monasterio de Santa Catalina.

Pink walls at Monasterio de Santa Catalina, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

This working monastery is what many Arequipa tourists take back with them in the evocative sense. This is a city within a city and an Instagrammer’s delight .

Street names inside give you an idea of the size of this place as you stroll through. Alleyways lead you into the nuns’ old quarters, kitchen areas, and gardens. I haven’t been to Morroco yet, but some of the vibrant blues on the walls gave off Chefchaouen vibes.

At its peak, there were about 450 nuns and other staff living here. Today, the number is much smaller — it’s home to 20 or so nuns who live their lives according to the Dominican Second Order — but recruitment is still happening.

If you visit, be respectful. This is still home to nuns who practice a life that likely doesn’t resemble yours or mine. Expect to spend at least a few hours here. You’ll think you’re done then find there are all kinds of nooks left to explore.

Don’t miss out on views from one of the open rooftops. There was only one rooftop accessible on our visit, but it was worth the wheezy climb.

10. Marvel at the Iglesia de San Francisco.

Iglesia de San Francisco, one of the best things to do in Arequipa, Peru

We weren’t able to visit inside the Iglesia de San Francisco as it was closed by the time we popped over, but it’s still worth a walk over to marvel at the architecture. The church was founded in 1552.

If you’re lucky enough to check out the interior, expect a single nave set against an Andean Baroque style, a movement that started in Peru between 1680 and 1780.

11. Relax at Parque Juan Pablo Vizcardo y Guzman.

Parque Juan Pablo Vizcardo y Guzman, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

This lovely urban park is a great place to relax and admire some local art. During our visit, we were treated to sculptures of ladybugs and Minions. Locals call the park the lungs of the historic center as it’s home to more than 200 trees.

12. Walk over the Rio Chili to Yanahuara.

Yanahuara Lookout, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

The Yanahuara District is basically a suburb of Arequipa, but you can walk there if you don’t mind a longer stroll. It takes about 30 minutes to walk over the river from the Plaza de Armas.

Explore the neighborhood shops and pose against one of the many adorable archways. Climb up to the Yanahuara Lookout for the best city views in these parts, including a sighting of El Misti.

13. Eat in a secret garden at El Tio Dario.

Beautiful food at El Tio Dario, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

If you worked up an appetite walking about Yanahuara, pop into El Tio Dario, a seafood-heavy eatery that resembles a secret garden. You’ll reach the restaurant through the scenic archway to the left of the Yanahuara Lookout.

Our meal here was delicious. We shared a liter of lemonade, a crab salad dish that was all kinds of photogenic, the fresh fish and chips of the day, and a platter of empanaditas. These are basically baby empanadas. They were also the highlights of our extensive meal outside of the scenery and company, of course.

14. Visit the critters at Mundo Alpaca.

Animals at Alpaca World, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

Mundo Alpaca, or Alpaca World, is one of the most popular free things to do in Arequipa. You get to meet some animals and tour exhibits about the region’s textile industry. There’s a very expensive shop on site if you’re into that, but we were just here for the animals. They seemed happy enough.

15. Treat yourself at Arequipa’s best restaurants.

Food at Chicha, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

If you had to name Peru’s most impressive celebrity chef, Gastón Acurio would likely top that list. His offering to the people of Arequipa is Chicha , arguably the best restaurant in the city. This is an Arequipa eatery perfect for special occasion dining.

If you visit April through December, you won’t want to miss the river shrimp. We were lucky enough to try it in ceviche while sipping on one of the most delicious lemonades I’ve ever had. Our shared main was their steak churrasco, an elevated version of a Peruvian specialty.

Reservations are highly recommended, especially for dinner service.

Let’s just say you’re here for a bit and ready to eat your way through the city. Here are a few more options:

  • La Nueva Palomino: This local favorite may appear as La Nueva Palomino Picantería Arequipeña on your map app. It’s a local favorite for generous helpings of stuffed peppers and dishes that come with some heat.
  • Restaurant on the Top: The biggest complaint at this one is that it’s a bit pricey for Arequipa, but you’re paying a bit of a tourist surcharge for the view from here. Dine with views of the Plaza de Armas and mountains beyond at this spot.
  • Zig Zag : The menu at this foodie haven is described as “between the Alps and the Andes,” so expect European influences on Peruvian favorites. You’ll want to make reservations at this one.

16. Sample Chinese/Peruvian fusion.

Chinese/Peruvian fusion, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

Chinese/Peruvian fusion is actually a pretty big deal not only in Arequipa, but Peru. I recommend just finding a highly-rated place close to where you’re staying with people eating in the evening. We did Restaurante Chifa Mandarin. It was delicious and super cheap for its healthy portions. The mound of fried rice we ordered was perfectly flavored with bits of pork. The wontons had what I assume were small pieces of ham inside. I’ll allow it.

17. Taste-test Peru’s cheese scene.

A cheese platter and wine, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

I am unstoppable when it comes to finding cheese shops and cheese-heavy dining experiences in my travel. La Queseria Craft Cheese & Wood Oven is a pizza restaurant that also serves up aggressive appetizer platters of regional cheese.

If you look at our platter above you’ll notice a lack of carbs in favor of more cheese. I didn’t know I could live this way, but now I don’t want to go back. Bring the lactose meds.

18. Learn about the country’s best cocktail at Museo del Pisco.

Cocktails at Museo del Pisco, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

The Museo del Pisco is less museum and more contemporary cocktail bar with a variety of classic beverages and delicious novelties. They’re all created by mixing more than 100 pisco varieties with different regional fruits.

When they say something is strong, by the way, believe them. We ordered a fig cocktail beverage and a pisco punch, and they both made climbing Arequipa’s steep hills a bit easier.

19. Sip on beers at Arequipa’s best brewpubs.

Food at an Arequipa brewpub, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

The Chelawasi Public House is a small microbrewery with great craft beers that also offers some menu dishes like burgers and savory platters to pair with your pints.

While the beer scene isn’t as extensive in Arequipa as it may be in some American cities , what they do offer is a diverse selection of flavors and styles. We sampled a few different types from all over Peru while snacking on sausages and fries.

20. Check out the views from a rooftop bar.

A woman at a rooftop bar, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

Arequipa has an excellent rooftop bar scene. Our favorite was the Waya Lookout, a rooftop bar right on the main square with views of the cathedral and distant volcanoes.

Yes, you can explore along the rooftop on your own, but I’d suggest doing that before that bucket of Coronas.

We liked this one enough that we visited it twice. Our second trip was to sample their food and frozen juices, and I’d recommend it all.

If you’d like to have yourself a little rooftop bar crawl, the Sunset Rooftop Bar on the highest level of Le Foyer and the bar at the top of the Katari Hotel are two more options.

21. Finish with something sweet at Chaqchao Chocolates.

A cake at Chaqchao Chocolates, one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

This chocolate shop is in the same courtyard as Las Gringas. If you didn’t have room after their pies for sweet treats, a return trip is worth it. We tried a piece of their decadent chocolate cake up on their sun deck and it was all pretty ideal.

22. Choose one of the best day trips from Arequipa.

Colca Canyon, a day trip from Arequipa and one of the top things to do in Arequipa, Peru

This city has plenty to occupy you with no matter how much time you have to dedicate to Arequipa, but it’s also a great base for day trips. We prioritized the Colca Canyon on our own trip.

We couldn’t come all this way and not see the Andean condors, and the trip was long but met all expectations. Our Colca Canyon tour included a drive through the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve, too, a hub for wildlife activity in the region.

With more time, you can take a Sillar Route tour to learn about how Arequipa became a center of volcanic architecture. Tours take you to stops featuring petroglyphs, the old city quarries, and impressive gorges that I hear evoke Petra.

Here are a few options for that:

Another option is a trip to La Mansion de Fundador, a 17th-century mansion that once belonged to Garcí Manuel de Carbajal, the city’s founder. You can spend time touring the house itself, walking the gardens, or planning a meal at the on-site restaurant.

More Places to Visit in Arequipa, Peru

We still had a few stops on our list even after four days in Arequipa. If you have more time or like variety, here are a few more fun things to do in Arequipa, Peru:

  • Shop at Mercado Central, also known as Mercado San Camilo, the city’s central flea market and hub for Peruvian food.
  • Tour the Monastery of Santa Teresa, a convent built in 1710 as one of the main religious hubs of the city center.
  • Watch Arequipa’s skies at Observatorio y Planetario Stellarium.
  • Go whitewafter rafting on Rio Chili.
  • Visit Casa Museo Mario Vargas Llosa, an exclusive experience for just 48 fans of the Nobel Prize-winning author per day.
  • Climb El Misti on a half-day trek.

Where to Stay in Arequipa

We spent four nights at El Portal De San Lázaro on our trip to Arequipa. I’d highly recommend it for its fantastic staff alone. The breakfast there is delicious, but they’ll pack you a lunch if you’re not able to partake due to tours. That melts my heart.

It also feels like it should be much more expensive than it was, but that’s expected in Arequipa. This city is still arriving onto the scene as a major hub for tourism.

Use the map below to browse your options if you’re not ready to commit:

Is Arequipa worth going to?

Arequipa is definitely worth going to. It’s visually stunning, delicious, and serves as a great base for day trips to the Colca Canyon and beyond.

15 Best Things to Do in Arequipa Peru

Here’s some of the most popular Arequipa attractions to visit in Peru’s “White City” and top things to do in Arequipa.

1 | Plaza de Armas Arequipa

Arequipa Plaza de Armas from the main waterfountain fountain

The Plaza de Armas of Arequipa is the living room and main square in the bustling city. It really doesn’t get much better than this. The Arequipa Plaza de Armas is home to beautiful sillar buildings, engulfed by mighty Volcanoes, and showcases the impressive Arequipa Basilica Cathedral.

In fact, the Arequipa Plaza de Armas is often dubbed the “most beautiful Plaza in Peru.”

2 | Visit the Colorful Santa Catalina Monastery

Santa Catalina Monastery is one of the best things to do in Arequipa Peru

The most iconic and photographed site in Arequipa is the Santa Catalina Monastery. This convent of nuns in Arequipa has been in existence since 1579, but finally opened its doors for visitors in 1970. Walk around the perfectly manicured courtyards and brightly colored streets. Visiting this monastery is like exploring a miniature city within a city. Do you spot the street signs?

There are multiple courtyards splashed in red, blue, and white paint. It’s easy to spend hours just soaking in the exquisite gardens, views, and the art in one of the top Arequipa attractions.

Although the Santa Catalina Monastery is one of the most popular things to do in Arequipa, it is expensive in comparison to other Peru tourist destinations. However, it is worth visiting the Monastery to understand the history and role of the Spanish Conquistadors on the Inca culture.

Santa Catalina Monastery Logistics | Find it here: Santa Catalina 301 Arequipa | Ticket Cost: 40 PEN ($10.50 USD) | Guided Tour : additional 20 PEN ($5.25 USD), guides onsite, but verify their information always | Hours : Daily, 9:00 – 18:00 / last entrance 17:00, Thursdays open 9:00 – 20:30 / last entrance 19:30

The Dark History of Santa Catalina Monastery

laundry wash-bins inside the Santa Catalina Monastery in Arequipa

A haunting tidbit about the monastery is that it was built for the Spanish by Inca labor force. It is a common theme that will be mentioned and can physically be seen throughout the entire city of Arequipa Peru.

These nuns of Santa Catalina Monastery (or their families) paid large fees to live their life dedicated to God in solitude. Back in the 1580’s, when the monastery first open, families paid 2,000 gold and 2,000 silver coins for their first daughter to join the convent. Today, that amount of money is equivalent of $150,000!

These nuns also had servants, the Incas, forced against their will to give up their own traditional beliefs and customs and adopt the Catholic faith. The monastery is incredibly beautiful, but it is important to remember the foundation it was built upon.

Tips for Visiting Santa Catalina Monastery

One of the best instagram spots in Arequipa Peru is the Santa Catalina Monastery

  • Get there early to avoid massive crowds and walk the colorful streets in solitude.
  • A guide is not necessary as there are information boards and a pamphlet. There are so many tours that it’s easy to overhear some facts. However, if you change your mind, purchase a guide onsite.
  • There is a rotating museum that is FREE but also connected to the monastery, so if you choose not to visit, make sure to peek-in and catch glimpses of one of the courtyards and see the rotating art.

3 | Join the Arequipa Free Walking Tour

a woman sorts alpaca fur at Alpaca Mundo Arequipa Peru

4 | Observe Juanita“The Ice Maiden” at Museo Santuarios Andinos

One of the top Arequipa attractions is the Museo Santuarios Andinos

If looking for one of the more unique things to do in Arequipa, visit Juanita, who is also referred to as “The Ice Maiden.” Juanita is a mummy frozen in time that can be seen at the Museo Santuarios Andinos (MUSA).

This small museum largely focuses on the topic of human sacrifices, and Juanita was only a young child of about 12-14 when she was sacrificed by the Incas to their angry mountain Gods. The mountain Gods showed their fury by erupting into the sky. Yes, she was thrown into the depths of a nearby Arequipa volcano.

When she was found in 1992, Juanita was almost perfectly preserved, including her hair and nails. The icy temperatures of the volcano she was sacrificed to now help tell her story.

Juanita has been preserved for almost 500 years, and seeing her at the end of the Museo Santuarios Andinos is shocking to say the least. Her small size is a brutal reminder of how young she was when she paid the ultimate price of her life to the Gods.

Juanita is currently wrapped up in a blanket, so her hands are covered, but there were plenty of detailed images hanging on the wall next to her. She is resting in a refrigerator, so there can be mixed emotions when seeing her.

Her story is on display for hundreds of tourists who walk through the door each day to pay their respects and understand more about the Inca ritual of human sacrifice.

Museo Santuarios Andinos Logistics | Find it Here : Calle la Merced 110 Arequipa Peru | Adult Ticket Cost: 20 PEN ($5.25 USD) for the entrance fee and then a “mandatory tip” for the volunteer tour guides, usually around 5 PEN ($1.25 USD) | Hours : Daily: 9:00 – 18:00, Sunday closes at 15:00 | Museo Santuarios Andinos Facebook Page

More than Juanita at the Museo Santuarios Andinos

The museum has lots of interesting artifacts and quite a few informational boards in English. It is “required” to take a guide through the museum, and a tip of 5 soles is expected at the end for the guide. The MUSA tours are in English and Spanish.

I walked through MUSA independently and found the museum easy to navigate; however, I missed the informative video about the actual discovery of Juanita, the Ice Maiden.

☛ Travel Tip | There are absolutely no photos allowed inside the Museo Santuarios Andinos, and personal items must be stowed in the provided lockers

The Museo Santuarios Andinos is one of the more unique things to do in Arequipa.

5 | Visit Yanhuara District of Arequipa

One of the best places to visit in Arequipa is the Plaza de Yanahuara

Arequipa is made up of lots of districts which are then filled with little  barrios,  or neighborhoods. Even tinier are the  tambos,  or smaller clusters of residences .

Most tourists head straight to the Historical Center of Arequipa and with good reason. Almost all of the main Arequipa attractions can be found in this condensed district.

The Yanahuara district is a true delight and is must visit on an Arequipa itinerary. Find adorable cobblestone streets that seem to transport those who wander them to the iconic white villages in Spain. The Plaza de Yanahuara is lovely and boasts the Yanahuara Viewpoint.

Mirador de Yanahuara

Mirador de Yanahuara boasts incredible views of Misti Volcano and the city of Arequipa Peru

Mirador de Yanahuara is an excellent and free place to watch the sunset. The views of the volcanoes are pretty stunning on a clear day. This cute viewpoint has a lovely park, an interesting church, and spectacular views of one of Arequipa’s photographed volcanoes. El Misti Volcano seems to sit perfectly in the sillar engraved arches.

6 | Don’t Skip Cayma District

The Plaza de Cayma Arequipa is worth a visit

A favorite district in Arequipa of locals is the Cayma District, with its low-key vibe and peaceful plaza. Don’t miss an opportunity to wander the Plaza de Cayma, stop by the church, and eat at local food joints.

Cayma is said to be the birthplace of traditional Peruvian Adobo stew (pork dish), so grabbing a bowl is a must when visiting Arequipa.

7 | Wander the Charming Streets of Arequipa

One of the absolute best things to do in Arequipa is to get lost on the small winding picturesque streets, or explore the plethora of small courtyards in of the sillar block churches. Arequipa Peru is an exquisite city deserves time to explore all of the hidden nooks and crannies.

8 | Take a Stroll in San Lorenzo Neighborhood

The main plaza in San Lazaro Arequipa

Taking a stroll in the San Lázaro neighborhood may be one of the best things to do in Arequipa. The barrio of San Lázaro is a bohemian jewel of the city and is snugly tucked only a few blocks away from the bustling Plaza De Armas Arequipa.

While Arequipa sightseeing, visit the barrio of San Lázaro square that showcases charming cafes, and on a clear day, provides smashing views of the surrounding mountains and Arequipa volcanoes. San Lázaro prides itself of having its own hipster microbrewery, contemporary coffee shops, and an ample supply of trendy Arequipa restaurants and cozy cafes.

9 | Appreciate an Arequipa Tambo

Tambo de Bronce is a tambo in Arequipa Peru

One of the top things to do in Arequipa is visit a tambo. Theses spaces were previously the marketplaces for the Incas in the cities and were found along the extensive Inca Road system of Qhapac Ñan.

➜ Psst… Inca Tambos played a significant role in the Inca Empire and were found in cities and resting points along lonely spots along Great Inca Trail. In Ecuador, you can camp in an Old Inca Tambo on the Ecuador Inca Trail to Ingapirca

When the Spanish arrived, the Inca tambos were turned into small connective residences for the Spanish. The hum of the city seems to disappear behind these walls, and the peacefulness of the city takes over.

Things to Do in Arequipa for Foodies

One of the best things to do in Arequipa is eat! Find typical Arequipa dishes in the Picanterías, but there is also a very thriving modern food scene. From breweries, coffee shops, vegan restaurants and ethnic cuisine, Arequipa Peru is a food destination!

10 | Eat Typical Arequipa Cuisine at a Picantería

The Americano is a popular dish in Arequipa's Picanterias

One of Arequipa’s best assets may just be its own distinctive cuisine and typical dishes. The food here is unlike anywhere else in Peru. Some of these dishes originated in specific districts right within the city limits of Arequipa.

At lunchtime, locals head straight to the  Picanterías,  where they drink their own version of chicha. A typical lunch includes a hearty soup or stew, or a heaping daily special plate of food.

Picanterias are all about socializing. All of these lively exchanges happen while dining at communal tables that are dressed in red and white checked tablecloths. The most memorable of experiences occur at lunchtime over a plate of typical food when the city seems to be sleeping, but the Picanterías are very much alive.

⁉️ Chisme is the Spanish slang name given for “tell me the gossip” & there is no shortage of harmless chisme in Picanterias

Picanterias are dinning establishments in Arequipa laced with history, stories, and recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation with a fiery passion. So ultimately, eating at a Picantería is one of the best things to do in Arequipa.

11 | Explore the Mercado San Camilo (San Camilo Market)

fruit stall in San Camilo Market

Mercado San Camilo is a busy Arequipa market with juice stands, a small fish market, unique meat stalls, medicine women, and produce stands that are piled high with vittles.

This popular Arequipa market has two levels, and it always seems to be buzzing, so it’s a great place to enjoy some people watching. Locals flock here to do their daily shopping, socialize, and grab a quick breakfast or a menu del dia, or typical budget-friendly lunch with two courses. Mercado San Camilo is an excellent place to sample typical Arequipa dishes from one of the many food vendors.

💬 Real Talk | A few higher-end Arequipa Hotels warned me to avoid eating at the market, but I never had an issue and didn’t get sick from the food. Personally, I was happy to find many tourists eating at the San Camilo Market. If your stomach can be sensitive, be mindful and be sure to pack charcoal pills

After a meal at the San Camilo Market, try an emoliente, which is a warm medicinal drink that helps with digestion. The location of these little stands are conveniently next to the exits, and only cost 1 PEN (30 cents).

12 | Learn About the Wines & Pisco of Peru

A wine sampling is something cool to do in Arequipa Peru

Right below the Mirador de Yanahuara sits an extremely small, but informative museum about wines, and of course, Pisco from Peru. The museum is officially named Museo Vivencial del Vino y Pisco , but MUVI for short.

This small Arequipa Museums has detailed wine region maps, models of the harvesting process, and even a video (in Spanish) that shows an overview of the Peruvian wine-making practices.

Museo Vivencial del Vino y Pisco Logistics | Find it here: Below the Mirador de Yanahuara | Cost:  It’s FREE to enter, and for me, included one free and generous sample. Depending on what’s open behind the counter, there’s a chance to possibly sample more, but might include a small fee | Hours: Tues – Sat: 9:00 – 17:00 | Official MUVI Website

There is a woman working behind the counter that will pour open bottles of wine as samples. There is no tasting flight at this time, but maybe with enough people visiting, it will be an option in the future.

This Arequipa wine museum was quite informative. A speedy 20 minutes and quick swig of wine later made me feel more confident about my wine knowledge of Peru. Let’s be real, it was non-existent before this!

13 | Enjoy an Arequipa Rooftop Bar

One of the best things to do in arequipa peru is to catch a sunset from a rooftop bar

One of the best things to do in Arequipa is to appreciate the multiple volcanoes and mountains of Arequipa from a rooftop bar. These majestic peaks, like El Misti add an epic backdrop for some pretty incredible sunsets.

The white buildings absorb these colorful spectacles, only enhancing the changing colors of the sky. No matter the location, always take the opportunity to look up at the sunset.

Sunset Rooftop Bar

Looking for a place to watch the sunset in Arequipa and sip on a Pisco Sour or cold beverage?  Sunset Rooftop Bar offers two different leveled terraces, chill music, almost 360° views, and an extensive cocktail menu, all for a reasonable price.

☛ Find Sunset Rooftop Bar inside of Le Foyer Hostel Arequipa on the 4th floor. Open daily 14:00 – 21:00

14 | Try Queso Helado the Famous Arequipa Ice Cream

A woman scoops out the typical ice cream in Arequipa Queso Helado

Queso Helado  is the artisanal typical ice cream from Arequipa, and although it translates to “iced cheese,” there is no cheese in this sweet treat. This traditional ice cream of Arequipa is made from milk, condensed milk, coconut, and spices. There is always a garnish of cinnamon sprinkles.

Queso Helado came into existence after the Spanish conquest, due to the fact that they introduced cattle and livestock to the region. The reference to cheese comes from the process of actually making this ice cream. The curdled milk comes off in layers, having the appearance of cheese flakes, which gives this must have Arequipa dessert the name Queso Helado.

15 | Sip on a Cold Microbrew

The inside of Chelawasi Public House in San Lazaro Arequipa

Chelawasi Public House is nestled in the trendy neighborhood of  San Lazaro  is the superb microbrewery and is one of the best places in Arequipa to sample some good brews. Best Arequipa Day Trips & Tours

One of the best things to do in Arequipa is to explore the nearby landscapes with a day trip or tour.

16 | Ruta Del Sillar

Canteras de Sillar Añashuayco, ruta del sillar, things to do in Arequipa Peru, Arequipa tours, Cinnamon Traveler Peru Photo

Remember how the historic center of Arequipa is made from the unique volcanic rock of sillar stones? One of the top half-day trips is to visit one of the quarries where the stones originate from.

Along the Route of Sillar you’ll get a chance to see some sculptures that are made from the sillar stones. These  “mines”  were opened recently in 2016 to tourists.

The easiest way to reach the Ruta del Sillar is via an organized tour like this one , or visit independently by hiring a verified taxi driver.

Canteras de Sillar Añashuayco  |  Find them here |  Entrance Fee:  5 PEN ($1.25 USD)  |  There are certain areas of the Ruta de Sillar that have an additional fee to visit and photograph  |  Hours:  Daily, 9:00 – 17:00

17 | Colca Canyon Tour

Oasis Sangalle, colca canyon trek, colca canyon guide, things to do in colca canyon, colca canyon trekking route

The Colca Canyon is an Arequipa must-see destination in South America and one of the most impressive natural landmarks in Peru .

There are many ways to experience the popular Colca Canyon like with a full day tour, a guided Colca Canyon trek, or hiking Colca Canyon without a tour company. The Colca Canyon is at least 4.5 hours from Arequipa, so for a full day tour, be prepared to spend a lot of the time on the bus or shuttle.

One of the most popular Colca Canyon tours is a 2 day trek with organized shuttles, accommodations, and stops at the popular Mirador Cruz del Condor. Here’s a popular Colca Canyon hiking tour option . Be mindful that the entrance fee to the Colca Canyon is usually never included.

💬 Real Talk | Due to the sheer distance and the enormity of the Colca Canyon, in my humble opinion, it’s best to spend more than a few days. Hang out in the small villages outside the ticketed area of the Colca Canyon, like Yanque Peru . Also, check out this section about spending more time in Colca Canyon Arequipa

Mirador Cruz Del Condor

The Cross of the Condor is a viewpoint that has one of the best places in the Canyon to catch a glimpse of the mighty Andean condors. A stop at this lookout is included in ALL Colca Canyon tours. There is usually a worker collecting money for the Colca Canyon entrance ticket.

Colca Canyon Admission ticket  |  Cost:   70 PEN ($17.75 USD)  |  Valid:  5 days  |  Purchase the ticket at many of the popular Colca Canyon Attractions

18 | Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reservation

Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reservation is a sprawling high-altitude altiplano landscape between Arequipa and Puno (Lake Titicaca). The almost otherworldly altiplano offers an excellent opportunity to get up close and personal with fauna like El Misiti Volcano and animals like Vicuña, a wild camelid found in Peru. There are over 150 different species of birds that call the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reservation home.

Be mindful that the altitude here in the reserve is much higher than Arequipa with the lowest point being over 9,000 ft. to the highest point of Chachani Volcano at 19,872 ( 6,057 m) . The altitute of Arequipa is 7,550 feet (2,300 m)  .

Aguada Blanca is a large water reservoir where it’s possible to spot flamingos. During the winter months between April to December the water from Aguada Blanca Lake evaporates, leaving behind salt that is collected by the locals.

Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reservation is not really structured for tourists, so it’s best to find a local guide or tour company . However, the reserve is becoming a more popular day trip from Arequipa.

Psst.. Love the antiplano landscape? The village of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile has tons of excursions and attractions like the Valley of the Moon & Catarpe Valley Gorge and of course the most famous spot in South America may be the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia.

19 | Climb an Arequipa Volcano

el cruz el misti volcano photo by Lev Pushkarev

There are two main Arequipa Volcanoes that intrepid hikers opt to climb, El Misti Volcano and Chachani Volcano. Both summits are a challenge and local guides are essential and readily available from Arequipa.

El Misti Volcano

El Misti is picturesquely nestled in the backdrop of Arequipa. The towering staggering volcano sits at an altitude of 19,101 feet. Adventurous hikers will love to reach the cross that sits along the crater of Misti. It’s usually a two day trek to climb El Misti and utilizing a local guide is highly recommended. Misti is still considered an active volcano.

➜ Here’s a highly rated guided tour for climbing Misti Volcano

Volcán Chachani

Alternatively, Chachani is another popular dormant volcano that can be summited from Arequipa. Don’t let the altitude fool you. At almost 20,000 ft, Chachani is a challenge and hiking with an experienced local guide is highly recommended.

20 | Hike to Capua Waterfall

Capua Waterfall is a popular day trip from Arequipa. The hiking trail through the gorge can be accessed from a collectivo ride from Arequipa to Yura. The trail is fairly well marked with the finale being the Capua Waterfall. The out and back trail takes around 4 – 5 hours to complete.

Guided Tours to Capua Waterfall usually include a stop at the nearby hot springs or other nearby Arequipa attractions.

☛ Packing Tip | Wear a good pair of hiking sandals since there are lots of stream and river crossings.

Best Hostels in Arequipa

Here are some popular hostels in Arequipa among backpackers.

Way Kap Hostel Arequipa

Way Kap Hostel Arequipa is my go-to hostel when visiting Arequipa. The staff is so incredibly helpful and happy, the space is spotless. Find two indoor patios for chilling, breakfast is included, and secure luggage storage. Valuables are locked up behind the desk and tagged for those hiking Colca Canyon.

Way Kap Hostel offers this incredibly rare service, which is hard to find in Arequipa!

Room sizes vary, but female only dorms are an option. Each bed comes with plug-ins and individual lights. Showers are hot! Way Kap Hostel is one of the best hostels in Arequipa!

➜ Book Way Kap Hostel Arequipa

Selina Arequipa

Selina’s are a “luxury” chain of hostels that are found all over Latin America. They are known as catering to digital nomads, but they don’t offer storage of valuables for those looking to take day trips from Arequipa.

➜ Book Selina Arequipa

The property is stunning and the rooms are spacious and comfortable, but the vibe here is more for nomads and couples. This was a common theme experienced by most solo-travelers.

Colca Canyon, Colca Canyon trail to San Juan, start of colca canyon trek, hiking colca canyon without a guide, second deepest canyon in the world

Many travelers use Arequipa as the starting point to explore the famous Colca Canyon. While one of the most popular things to do in Arequipa is to take a full day Colca Canyon tour, there are so many places to visit in Peru’s Colca Canyon. Truth be told, I spent 2 weeks in the area.

Multi-Day Colca Canyon Trek

The standard Colca Canyon trekking route is 2 days and 1 night and will include an overnight in the famous Oasis Sangalle village. Those looking to explore the Canyon a little more in depth can plan a multi-day hike in the Colca Canyon . Be mindful, the hiking paths are fairly well marked, but are narrow and steep, so always use your best judgement and never hike alone.

🥾 Peru Packing List for Multi-Day Treks & Adventures

Although not so “standard” a 4 day Colca Canyon trek includes the tiny village of Fure with it’s barreling Huaruro Waterfall (Catarata de Fure). It also includes a night in Llahuar, which boasts some simple hot springs in the Colca Canyon.

Yanque Peru

views of Yanque Peru, Colca Canyon, things to do in Yanque, hike to Coporaque Peru, mountains, volcano, desert landscape, village, river

The village of Yanque is an ideal place to explore the Colca Canyon Peru. From the town, there are exceptional hot springs and an alternative Colca Canyon day hike to the beautiful Pre-Inca ruins of Uyo-Uyo, with a small waterfall.

There are other things to do in Yanque , like take the adventurous day trip to the hidden Chimpa Fortress (Fortaleza de Chimpa) . Keep your eyes peeled for Sabancaya volcano, which is often erupting ash into the sky.

Cotahuasi Canyon

Intrepid adventure travelers may opt to visit the Cotahuasi Canyon, which claims to be even deeper than the Colca Canyon. Cotahuasi is far from Arequipa and the Colca Canyon and it will take at least another full day just to reach it.

A visit to the Cotahuasi Canyon is a truly off the beaten path experience in Peru.

A llama eating at Alpaca World Arequipa

Now that we’ve covered over 20 of the best things to do in Arequipa, here are some general travel tips for Arequipa Peru.

How Many Days in Arequipa?

Arequipa city can be explored aggressively in two or three days, but slowing down allows the soul of this place to sparkle before your eyes. Those who want to experience some nearby Arequipa day trips should plan for at least a week. Between hiking Colca Canyon and spending time in Yanque, I spent around a month in Arequipa.

Arequipa Tours vs Independent Travel in Arequipa Peru

Arequipa is a walkable city and is connected to the Colca Canyon via buses and collectivos. It is very possible to explore Arequipa and the Colca Canyon without a tour. However, some of the best things to do in Arequipa are easier to reach with a tour.

How to Get to Arequipa Peru

Huacachina oasis, landmarks in peru, trees, lake, sand dune

Arequipa has a small international airport, the Alfredo Rodriguez International Airport.

Most backpackers get to Arequipa by bus from Lima. The popular route includes an overnight in the Oasis village of Huacachina or the coastal town of Paracas. This helps break up the long bus ride and can include stops like the intriguing Nazca Lines.

🚌 There are designated tourist buses like PeruHop if you don’t feel comfortable riding the local buses. However they are extremely expensive comparative to the local buses since they include some attractions en-route.

Alternatively, Puno and Lake Titicaca is around 6.5 hours from Arequipa and well connected by bus or small shuttles.

The Imperial City of Cusco and Arequipa are connected by bus and the route typically takes around 11 hours. Those traveling from Arequipa to Cusco can opt for a night bus.

Hello, I went to La Capitana on your advice, and I loved the atmosphere but the food was really disappointing! I was told by a local guy sittlng next to me, that although quite popular, the food was not really good at this picanteria, there were much better options in the city..

Oh interesting. I spent a couple weeks in the region and tried a few different Picanterias, but I and always found myself back at La Capitana. To me, the portion sizes, quality of food, and atmosphere was unmatched by most. I ate at Mercado San Camilo, too, and found Capitana to be my go-to spot.

I tried to avoid the centro area when eating at a picanteria, as I felt like they more catered to tourists. They didn’t feel quite as authentic as the ones a little more outside the city and I didn’t see many locals filling the tables and eating at them.

Curious to hear which Picanteria you preferred?

All You Need to Know About Arequipa

Located in the south of Peru, in the Chili River Valley, is Arequipa. It is the second most populated city in Peru after Lima. The city is situated about 2,300m (7,550 feet) above sea level and at the foot of three massive volcanoes: Misti, Chachani and Pichupichu.

The modern city of Arequipa was founded on the 15th August 1540 by Spanish settlers, although the area has been occupied since the Paleolithic Era. According to legend, the name “Arequipa” comes from an Incan ruler, after he said, “ari, quepay,” which in Quechua means “yes, stay”. However, others suggest that the name derives from an old dialect of Aymara.

The city is located on the “Ring of Fire”, therefore volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are very common. Earthquakes have damaged the city several times in 1600, 1868, 1958, 1979, and 2001.

Why is Arequipa called the White City? The city is referred to as La Ciudad Blanca because of the white walls of many of its colonial buildings. The walls are made of sillar which is a local white volcanic stone.

Arequipa is definitely one of the most architecturally beautiful cities in the world. So, it’s no wonder that just like Lima’s Centro Historico , Arequipa’s historical centre was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000.

How to Get to Arequipa

There are a few ways you can reach Arequipa. If you’re short on time, then you can consider flying to Arequipa. However, if you have more time, we recommend getting to Arequipa over a few days, so you’ll have the chance to stop at some unmissable locations along the coastal regions of Peru.

Rodríguez Ballón International Airport is one of the two main air hubs in southern Peru. You can fly direct from places like Lima, Cusco, Piura, and Trujillo. The only international destination where you can fly directly to Arequipa is from Santiago, Chile. Airlines that operate at this airport are: LATAM Peru, Sky Airline Peru, JetSmart Peru, and JetSmart Chile.

Click here to get 10% off from your WayAway Plus membership plan,  which gives cashback on flights, accommodation, car rentals, tours, and more.

Peru Hop  – If you’re on a south of Peru tour, then  booking a Peru Hop bus pass  might be a great option for you. It’s a safe and favoured bus company by many and has many pros which you can read about in our  bus guide to Peru.  Peru Hop buses normally travel from  Lima  to  Paracas , then to  Huacachina in one day. The bus leaves Huacachina the next day to Nazca from where you can get an overnight bus to Arequipa. It would be a 2-day trip, spending at least one night in Huacachina.

Click here to read about how to spend a night in Huacachina, Peru’s desert oasis.

Public Bus  – If you’re not travelling with Peru Hop, then you can take a public bus to Arequipa too. Bus companies such as  Cruz del Sur, Civa or Oltursa  provide services between Lima and Arequipa. The tickets cost anywhere between £20 to £40 ($US 25-50) depending on the time and bus company you pick.

Note – It takes a minimum of 18 hours (but normally over 20 hours) to reach Arequipa from Lima. However, you can opt to break up your journey and see other places. Many of the bus services provide buses from places like Ica or Nazca. These will still take a good 10-13 hours, so we recommend picking an overnight bus. You can  buy your ticket online  or at the bus station. Note that your bus might leave from a different terminal depending on the bus company.

You can find bus routes and companies operating to and from your next destination on these websites:  Busbud.com ,   and Rome2Rio .

Read our detailed  guide on how to travel by bus in Peru.

If you’re coming from Cusco, you can actually opt to travel by train. This is going to be the most expensive way to reach Arequipa and won’t be a quick journey either. However, it will definitely be a scenic ride and a unique experience overall. You’ll be travelling on the Andean Explorer, travelling along one of the highest train routes in the world. The journey takes over 2 days to complete. You can read more about this option here .

Arequipa Travel Tips

Altitude. Arequipa sits 2,335m (7660 ft) above sea level, so you can get altitude sickness. If you’re coming from the coastal areas of Peru, then you won’t be acclimatised to high altitude when arriving. There are many symptoms of altitude sickness, including dehydration, dizziness, headaches, shortness of breath and heavy breathing, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting. It’s good to remember that  anyone can develop altitude sickness  and its symptoms can be less or more severe. Make sure to be extra cautious if you already have respiratory problems since the air quality can make your problems worse.

Top Tip – Make sure to buy altitude sickness tablets before you head to Arequipa. The city is definitely a great place to acclimatise before visiting places with even greater altitude like Puno (3,900m) and Cusco (3,400m).

Earthquakes. Arequipa is surrounded by many volcanoes which makes it an earthquake prone area. Whilst we didn’t feel any earthquakes in the city, we experienced one every night in the Colca Canyon. The largest one (5.6 magnitude) completely destroyed the road and we had to hike through it in order to leave the canyon. We recommend reading  the US Federal Emergency Management Agency’s advice about what to do before, during and after an earthquake.

Tap Water. We don’t recommend drinking tap water in Arequipa, or anywhere in Peru for that matter. You can always boil your water or use a filtered water bottle if you want to be a responsible traveller and reduce your plastic waste.

Personal safety. Whilst we felt completely safe walking around the city, make sure to stay vigilant. Also, try not to walk at night on your own outside of the touristy areas.

arequipa tourist places

How Long Do You Need in Arequipa

This really depends on how much time you have and on your interests.

If you’re short on time , then about 2 days will be enough to see the city’s highlights in a less-rushed way. Then I guess you’d also like to visit the Colca Canyon. If you’re not a big hiker, then you can do this as a day trip. So, in total, you could do the highlights of Arequipa in just 3 days. In case you really don’t have time, you can just wonder around its Historic Centre on the day you arrive from your night bus and take a day-trip to the Colca Canyon the next day.

If you love hiking and want to do a multi-day trek in the Colca Canyon , then you would need at least 1 or 2 days in the city and an extra 2 or 3 days for hiking. You can either do a 2-day or a 3-day trek in the Colca Canyon, which you can read more about in our guide. We recommend going for the trek on your second day and having an extra day at the end for sightseeing and relaxing.

Are you a slow traveller? If so, then we highly recommend spending at least a week in Arequipa, especially if you want to complete the 3-day Colca Canyon trek. This way you’ll have more time to really see the city, and try out a lot more restaurants and coffee shops. Plus, you’ll have the chance to visit places like the Sillar Route or climb one of the volcanoes.

Best Things to Do in Arequipa

1. relax at plaza de armas.

Probably the best place to start exploring Arequipa is the Plaza de Armas. It is the city’s main public square that – just like in any other Latin-American cities – serves as the centre of urban and evening activities.

The square is large but not overwhelmingly huge like Mexico City’s main square for example. The Plaza de Armas is surrounded by arcaded colonial white buildings and the impressive Cathedral with some greenery and a fountain in the middle. What makes Arequipa’s main square even more beautiful is Misti volcano acting as the backdrop to the Cathedral.

Once you’ve wondered around the plaza, make sure to grab a queso helado (‘cheese’ ice cream), sit on a bench and just watch the world go by. There’s no better way to get to know a new city than to sit at its main square and watch the locals. Alternatively, you can also enjoy one of the many cafes and restaurants that surround Plaza de Armas.

2. Visit Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa

Taking up the entire north side of the Plaza de Armas is the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa. It was built between 1540 and 1656 and has a neo-Renaissance architecture with a Gothic influence. The Cathedral has two impressive towers and it is the largest one in Peru.

Did you know? – The first church was built in 1544, but then it was destroyed by the 1583 earthquake. After reconstructing the church in 1590 it got partially destroyed in 1600 by a volcano eruption, then fully destroyed by another earthquake in 1604. After the reconstruction of the Cathedral was finished again, it was damaged by multiple earthquakes in 1666, 1668, 1687, 1784, 1868 and 2001 as well as a fire in 1844.

The Cathedral with Misti in the background definitely provides you with the most picture perfect city views. However, we also recommend a visit inside the cathedral. Since 2011, there has been a religious museum inside and you can also see the largest organ in all of South America that was shipped there from Belgium. You can also visit a catacomb under the building.

Entry to the Cathedral is free, but you’ll have to pay around S/.10 for the Religious Museum.

arequipa tourist places

3. Stop by at the Church of La Compañia

Once you’ve visited Peru’s largest Cathedral, why not visit Arequipa’s oldest church, the Church of la Compañia. The outside of the church is really stunning and that alone is worth stopping by. It is definitely one of the most beautiful examples of the mestizo architecture. This style combines European Renaissance and Baroque architecture with indigenous styles resulting in something incredibly beautiful. If you go inside, you can see a beautifully carved wooden altar covered with gold leaf decorations.

4. Enjoy a Drink at Claustros de La Compañía

Close to the Church of La Compañia are the Claustros de la Compañía (Cloisters of the Company). The cloisters are three buildings with arches and beautifully decorated columns built in the 18th century. The buildings were constructed by the Jesuits for religious and living purposes.

Today the cloisters are converted into a few small shops, restaurants and cafes. You can just wonder around and appreciate the stunning architecture or grab a drink and enjoy some peace and quiet.

5. Get Lost in Santa Catalina Monastery

A must visit place during any visit to Arequipa is Santa Catalina Monastery. It was founded in the 16th century by Maria de Guzman and was home to at least 500 people, of which one third were nuns. These nuns were actually daughters of aristocratic Spanish families who – as a tradition – offered their second daughter to serve god.

After 400 years as a cloister, Santa Catalina Monastery opened its doors to the public in 1970. It is a huge complex covering around 20,000 sq-meters and just like other buildings in Arequipa, it was built from volcanic sillar stone. The monastery is organized into cloisters, living quarters, a plaza, a gallery, and a chapel, so there’s plenty to see during your visit. You’ll probably need a few hours to walk around and see most of it.

The monastery is open daily between 9AM and 6PM, although the last admission is at 5PM. Entry fee is S/.40 ($US10 / £9 per person.

6. Make Some Furry Friends at Mundo Alpaca

At Mundo Alpaca, as part of a short tour, you’ll have the chance to learn about the different breeds of llamas and alpacas. After learning a bit more about these animals, you will also get to know how Alpaca fibre is processed into handicrafts. We found this part of the tour very interesting on its own.

Did you know? – Vicuñas are wild relatives of alpacas and Vicuña fibre is the finest in the world. Since vicuñas cannot be domesticated and herding communities can only shear them once every two years, it is also the most expensive textile in the world.

The best part about Mundo Alpaca – and the main reason many visit – is the cutest gang of llamas and alpacas they have. After getting to know the different types of breed and learning how they make those traditional Peruvian jumpers we’re pretty sure you’re going to buy, you’ll have the chance to feed the animals. They are really adorable and definitely won’t turn down some food. We had a fabulous time at Mundo Alpaca and we’re sure you’ll enjoy your visit too. What’s more? The whole experience is free.

7. Explore Barrio de San Lázaro, the Oldest Neighbourhood in Arequipa

Barrio de San Lázaro is the oldest neighbourhood in Arequipa and is located only a few blocks away from the Plaza de Armas. This is a picturesque area of narrow streets and white buildings that everyone should have a walk around when visiting Arequipa. You wouldn’t think that you’re in the second largest city of Peru when wondering through the narrow, cobbled stone streets.

On a clear day, you can also admire the volcanoes in the background. The whole are is pretty picturesque, so you’ll have no trouble taking beautiful photos. There are also plenty of trendy cafes and restaurants you can try out.

8. See Juanita at Museo Santuarios Andinos

Whilst there are plenty of museums in Arequipa, there’s one that should definitely be on your list: the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries. It is the resting place of Juanita.

Who is Juanita, you might ask? I guess it comes as no surprise that the Inca culture was known for making sacrifices. They often sacrificed humans instead of animals to make sure that their scarifies would work. One of these human scarifies was Juanita who was approximately 12 to 15 years old. Her body was discovered in 1995 when a glacier melted on Mount Ampato and revealed her body. Since Juanita was found pretty much entirely frozen, her hair, skin, internal organs and even the contents of her stomach were preserved. They also found many typical offerings such as llama bones, small figurines and pottery pieces.

The entry fee to the museum costs S/.20 which includes a mandatory guided tour. The guides are really amazing and share many interesting facts about the Incas and Juanita. Note that you cannot take photos inside!

9. Visit the Colourful Mercado San Camilo

Located only a short walk from the Plaza de Armas is the lively and colourful San Camilo Market. If you’ve been reading our guides for a while now, you know that we can’t resist visiting markets. Whilst it’s great to see historical buildings, you’ll really get to know a city by visiting one of its markets.

San Camilo is the main market in Arequipa and also the oldest one. It’s a huge place filled with just about anything you’d want. Luckily, it’s very organised so you can easily find the section you’re interested in the most. They have some amazing local foods and also offer some of the tastiest fresh fruit juices. The market is also a great place if you’re planning on buying some typical Peruvian souvenirs because they are much cheaper.

arequipa tourist places

10. Wonder Around Yanahuara District and Yanahuara Viewpoint

Another area you should add to your Arequipa list of things to do is Yanahuara district. Located only about a 20 minute walk from the Plaza de Armas across the Rio Chili, you’ll find this neighbourhood much more tranquil than the centre.

The highlight of this district has to be Yanahuara viewpoint from where you can get some pretty stunning views of the Arequipa skyline and the volcanoes surrounding the city. Possibly the best time to visit is during sunset, so a trip to Yanahuara district is a great way to end a day in the city.

Where to Eat in Arequipa

If you’re in Arequipa then you have to eat at one of the many Picanterias. A picantería is basically a traditional family-run lunchtime restaurant around Arequipa. These Picanterias serve some of the best regional versions of Peruvian dishes.

Just like most places across Peru (and in South America), there are many places offering ‘menu del dia’ (menu’s of the day). It’s basically a set 2 or 3-course fixed lunch menu offering a starter of soup, a main dish and of course a dessert. They also include a drink. These lunch menus are really delicious and very affordable too. Prices vary but are normally S/. 10-20 per person. We had some great vegan deals at Omphalos Restaurant Vegetariano – Vegano and at Prana.

A must try dessert in Arequipa is Queso Helado (“cheese” ice cream). Don’t be fooled by the name; it actually doesn’t have cheese in or taste like it either. It’s usually made of whole milk, evaporated milk, cinnamon, cloves, desiccated coconut, sugar, and egg yolks. To us it tasted a bit like a very creamy vanilla ice cream. If you’re a cinnamon lover like us, then you’ll definitely enjoy this treat.

Of course if you really want to learn more about Peruvian food, then you can consider joining a cooking class or food tour.

Final Thoughts on Things to Do in Arequipa, Peru

We completely fell in love with Arequipa and it became our favourite city in Peru. We don’t say this often about a city, but it’s a place we would 100% go back to just to enjoy the food, coffee shops and it’s laidback vibe. Whilst we managed to see quite a few of Arequipa’s main tourist attractions, we really wish we had more time to do a few more day-trips from the city. On the flip side, this gives us a great excuse to return to this incredible city in the future.

Have you ever been to Arequipa before? If so, what was your favourite thing to do there? If not, which activity would be on top of your list? Let me know in the comments below.

When time for travel comes, nature and its sinuous geography surprise us with landscapes and places from which the traveler does not want to return. Because traveling is also finding and discovering, and Arequipa has a lot to offer. This region is a sample of the variety of places that you can visit with alternatives of adventure and rest that you cannot miss.

In the shadow of a volcano, surrounded by majestic and snowy mountains, and enriched by its great colonial history, the Ciudad Blanca (White City) will show you the beauty, tradition and gastronomy that have made it one of the most important cities in Peru.

Santa Catalina Convent

Founded in the 16th century, this was a monastery for cloistered nuns, becoming one of the most representative constructions of Arequipa's colonial architecture. When entering, you will find a citadel made up of streets, squares, gardens, halls and even a cemetery. The colors and aromas of flowers make this tour a unique and very special experience.

The convent occupies an area of approximately twenty thousand square meters and its distribution is similar to that of the first neighborhoods of Arequipa. Inside, you will discover the cloister of Blessed Sister Ana de los Ángeles Monteagudo, who was beatified during Pope John Paul II visit to Peru in 1985. In the gallery, you can find paintings by the Cusco school. You can choose a guided tour or follow the signs that will tell you its charming story.

Misti volcano

The Misti, with its 5,825 meters high, is the most representative symbol of Arequipa. Always accompany as a guardian apu in the landscape of the area, since it is just 20 km from the city. From its summit, you have an incredible panoramic view of Arequipa, the Chili river valley and the adjoining volcanoes such as Pichu Pichu or Chachani.

To visit this majestic volcano and reach the top, you must take two days on your itinerary. Although the journey does not imply major difficulties, it is important to carry out a necessary acclimatization period to adequately cope with a long walk of up to 10 hours. Without a doubt, an experience for those who enjoy adventure and trekking, which is crowned with great and fascinating landscapes that remain forever in memory.

The Cotahuasi Canyon

The river of the same name crosses this ravine with a depth of 3,535 meters and a route of 100 km between two huge mountains: La Coropuna and La Solimana. The canyon extends from the hills of the first to the junction with the Ocoña river. In this area (declared a Tourist Reserve) you will find ancient temples, extensive terraced areas and other archaeological centers of pre-Hispanic origin.

Also, due to its rugged geography, this canyon has become an ideal destination for adventure sports. Canoeing, rock climbing, trekking and mountain biking competitions are held every year there. In its surroundings, you can also enjoy the Sipia waterfall, a 150-meter cataract -considered the largest in the entire canyon-, which allows you to appreciate the strength of the river in a large dimension. The fall is placed at three hours of walk from the town of Cotahuasi.

The Sillar quarries

The city of Arequipa is known for its buildings based on sillar (volcanic stone). This whitish-colored rock was used by the Incas for sacred buildings and, later, by the Spanish to build houses and churches. Thus, by the use of the sillar, Arequipa is known as the ‘White City’. By visiting the route of sillar, you will be able to discover the way in which this material was worked, which, due to its beauty and particularity, will leave you impressed.

The Yanahuara Viewpoint

This charming balcony is located just 2 km from the city center next to the plaza of the same name, meaning a must-see in Arequipa. Built in the 19th century, it has a privileged view of the entire city; and due to its location, you can see the three volcanoes: Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu, which surround the city. When you visit the Yanahuara plaza, don't forget to try the traditional Arequipa dessert, the Queso helado (the Frozen cheese). A delight that you should not miss.

Formerly the capital of Peru, Arequipa is a beautiful place to visit thanks to its wonderful historic buildings and scenic location amidst three towering volcanoes. Often known as the ‘White City’, much of its historic center is built out of dazzling white rock that was quarried from the spectacular El Misti volcano and the colonial-era architecture is mesmerizing for its beauty and artistry.

A popular tourist destination, the city has a wealth of religious buildings for visitors to enjoy. Visiting its stunning cathedral and delightful convents and monasteries are among the many things to do in Arequipa. La Mansion del Fundador

Located around ten kilometers from the city center, La Mansion del Fundador is a delightful seventeenth century mansion which once belonged to the founder of Arequipa itself. Now a tourist attraction, the mansion has some wonderful furniture and paintings on show and wandering around the restored rooms offers up a fascinating glimpse into the past.

The kitchen and chapel are the most interesting parts of the building and the gardens are peaceful and picturesque and perfectly fit in amongst the colonial-era architecture.

11. Molino de Sabandia

Molino de Sabandia

This historic water mill is well worth visiting as it offers up a glimpse into Arequipa’s past and its peaceful grounds are the perfect place to relax amidst the nature on offer and enjoy the stupendous views of El Misti off in the distance.

Built all the way back in 1621, the mill has since been restored and its gleaming white walls stand out delightfully against the green of the countryside all around it. A picturesque and charming spot, the architecture of the mill is marvelous to behold and its verdant grounds are home to a vast array of cacti and succulents, and some local animals can be seen peacefully ambling about here and there.

10. Monasterio de la Recoleta

Monasterio de la Recoleta

Rebuilt several times over the centuries due to the damaging earthquakes that plague the region, the Monasterio de la Recoleta is now a museum and is just a short walk away from Plaza de Armas in the historic city center.

The diverse collection of Amazonian artifacts, religious art, and ethnographic items is interesting to explore and the monastery itself is fantastic to wander around. Of particular interest is the stunning library which hosts over twenty thousand works and the beautiful cloisters that can be found here and there.

For a great view of Arequipa and El Misti volcano, climb to the top of the bell tower and revel in the peace and quiet as you gaze out over the beautiful scene.

9. Convento de Santa Teresa

Convento de Santa Teresa

Built all the way back in 1710, the Convento de Santa Teresa is located in the historic center of the city and the wonderful colonial-era buildings now host a fantastic art collection. The museum is peaceful to wander around and the religious artworks and historical artifacts are delightful to peruse.

There are also over three hundred paintings, textiles, sculptures, and murals for visitors to enjoy. A living institution, a number of nuns still reside in the convent and the architecture itself is beautiful to behold with the church and cloisters being particularly impressive.

8. Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve

Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve

Not far away from Arequipa is the marvelous Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve and it is definitely worth a visit if you want to explore some of the beautiful nature that surrounds the city.

A diverse array of landscapes can be found in the reserve and visitors can enjoy wandering along remote paths that overlook lagoons, wetlands, plains, and of course the breathtaking volcanoes and mountains that dot the countryside.

Animals and birds which are native to the Andes can be spotted here and there, and the splendid scenery needs to be seen to be believed. Among the many attractions are the beautiful Laguna de Salinas and the El Misti volcano that towers over its surroundings.

7. Iglesia de La Compania

Iglesia de La Compania

Located on one corner of the Plaza de Armas, the Iglesia de La Compania is a small yet elegant Jesuit church and is well worth visiting although it is often overlooked as people ogle instead at the grand Basilica that dominates the square.

The mestizo Baroque facade is wonderful to gaze upon and the ornate carvings are full of fantastic details and motifs. Work on the church began in 1590 although it would take over a hundred years for it to be completed and as with many of the other buildings in the city, it is built out of dazzlingly white sillar volcano rock.

The interior is just as stupendous and the gold leaf covered altar is just one of the many highlights on show.

6. Yanahuara

Yanahuara

A short walk away from the city center is the district of Yanahuara and from here there are amazing panoramas over Arequipa and the sunsets are particularly stunning as the buildings are painted in a mesmerising array of reds, yellows, and oranges.

Yanahuara itself is a lovely neighborhood to walk around and it is home to some brilliantly white buildings, colonial-era churches and leafy plazas. The undoubted highlight is the fantastic view from the iconic arches and from here you can gaze out over the city and the far off El Misti volcano.

5. Mercado San Camilo

Mercado San Camilo

An enthralling thing to do in Arequipa, Mercado San Camilo is a bustling market, full of life and energy that offers up an authentic look at the city. The endless stalls are laden with wares and you can find anything from fresh fruit and artisanal products, to gruesome butchers’ stands and a barely credible variety of potatoes.

There is an intoxicating atmosphere about the market and the abundance of bright colors threatens to be overwhelming. Trawling the aisles is great fun and Mercado San Camilo is the perfect place to pick up some souvenirs or stop for a smoothie and watch the world go by.

4. Museo Santuarios Andinos

Museo Santuarios Andinos

Widely considered to be the best museum in the city, Museo Santuarios Andinos is fascinating to wander around and offers up an interesting look at the culture and history of human sacrifices.

The main attraction on show is the remains of the ‘Ice Maiden’ who was sacrificed to the gods by the Incas all the way back in the fifteenth century. ‘Juanita,’ as she is known, was discovered by an expedition to the mountains in 1995 and the museum showcases a number of artifacts from the trip.

Thanks to its famous ‘resident,’ the museum is now one of the main attractions in the city and the atmospheric galleries and exhibition rooms are well worth stopping by.

3. Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa

Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa

Lining one side of the beautiful Plaza de Armas is the magnificent Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa which towers over the square. The original building dates all the way back to 1656 but over the centuries was damaged by fire and destroyed by an earthquake.

As such, much of the wonderful neoclassical building we see today dates to 1868 when the Basilica was last rebuilt, and it is the most important religious site in the city. Built out of the white volcanic rock that makes Arequipa so distinctive, the Basilica’s interior is just as stunning as its exterior as the marble columns from Italy lie alongside a pulpit from France and an organ from Belgium.

This massive edifice is a must see when in Arequipa and will certainly impress visitors with its gorgeous facade, shimmering white stone and two imposing towers that look out over Plaza de Armas.

2. Plaza de Armas

Plaza de Armas

The main square in the city, Plaza de Armas, is breathtaking to behold and is widely considered to be one of, it not the, most beautiful plazas in the whole of South America. As such, it is a very popular haunt among tourists who invariably come away astounded at the beauty of the place.

Bordered by impressive colonial-era buildings that are dazzlingly white due to the volcanic rock that they are built out of, Plaza de Armas is a delightful spot to spend some time.

There are lots of restaurants and cafes for locals and tourists alike to grab a bite to eat and simply enjoy the plaza. The undoubted highlight is the stunning Basilica which borders one side of the square and with the sheer amount of brilliant white buildings on show, it is easy to see why Arequipa is often called the ‘White City’.

1. Santa Catalina Monastery

Santa Catalina Monastery

One of the most popular tourist attractions in the city, Santa Catalina Monastery is a simply mesmerising visit to place and is often described as a city within a city due to the wealth of buildings that clutter the complex.

Full of color and beautiful flowers and plants, the small streets of the monastery are marvelous to wander around and the colonial-era architecture makes you feel as if you have stepped back in time and consequently it is a great place to take some photos.

Founded by a rich Spanish widow all the way back in 1579, the monastery still hosts an operational nunnery and is located in the historic center of Arequipa. Visitors can explore the chapels of the complex as well as the living quarters of the sisters themselves, and the cloisters are particularly remarkable to behold. A must-see when in Arequipa, Santa Catalina Monastery will astound visitors with its endless streets and peaceful, reflective ambience.

Best Time to Visit Arequipa

Overlooked by three enormous volcanoes, Arequipa enjoys over 300 days of sunshine a year with only January to March really seeing any rain. As it lies at a high altitude at the edge of the Altiplano, the temperature is always quite cool, averaging around 21 to 23°C (70 to 73°F).

By far the most popular months to visit are July through October when conditions are great for ambling about its colonial center or enjoying some outdoor activities. Although prices are at their highest, numerous parades, dances and concerts are held for Arequipa Week. Other than exploring the White City, this is the best time to visit the Colca and Cotahuasi canyons.

After these peak months, the prices and crowds increase again in December as people flock here for the holidays. All its decorations and fireworks help create a festive atmosphere with the days being bright and sunny as it is summer in Peru.

January to March sees fewer visitors in Arequipa due to the rain though they soon return for Semana Santa and the Virgin of Chapi celebrations in April and May. Its colourful carnival is also worth seeing as lively processions honor the Virgen de la Candelaria.

5 Arequipa’s tourist attractions that will captivate you

Arequipa is the perfect destination to enjoy a vacation full of nature, adventure, history and delicious gastronomy. Named a World Cultural Heritage Site, this city is, without a doubt, one of those places that you have to visit at least once in your life. Here we leave you 10 tourist places in Arequipa that you should know.

While traveling and discovering new spots in Lima you may need to use one of our mobile phone plans for tourists to have a  tourist SIM card . In order to understand and find new adventures, here in  PeruSIM . Find more about this very nice places.

1. Misti Volcano

Arequipa has one of the most impressive destinations for the most daring travelers: Misti, a 5,822 meter volcano, more than 800 thousand years old and which is among the 16 active and potentially active volcanoes in Peru. If you are looking for a maximum adventure plan, we recommend ascending the Misti Volcano, a two-day journey surrounded by incredible landscapes, camping at more than 4,000 meters above sea level and with a totally unique arrival at the finish line: the view. of the Misti crater.

How to get there: although you can see the Misti from practically any part of the White City, if you want to trek to the top we recommend hiring a tour, since it is a demanding hike, at high altitude and in which you need to be accompanied by a guide who knows the area and who can accompany you all the way.

2. Monastery of Saint Catherine

In the heart of the city of Arequipa is one of the great architectural works of colonial Peru. This is the Monastery of Santa Catalina, a cloistered convent built in the 16th century and which has more than 20 thousand square meters that you can explore from end to end. Its colorful streets, interesting history and amazing architecture have made the Monastery of Santa Catalina one of the main tourist places in Arequipa.

How to get there: the Monastery of Santa Catalina is located just a few blocks from the Plaza de Armas of Arequipa. If you want to visit it on your own, you will only have to follow Santa Catalina Street (located next to the Basilica Cathedral of Arequipa) and continue along it for four blocks. If you prefer, you can join our City Tour in Arequipa, which includes a guided visit to the monastery and other places in the city.

3. National Reserve of Salinas and Aguada Blanca

Among the great natural places to visit around Arequipa is the Salinas and Aguada Blanca National Reserve. It is the home of the majestic Arequipa volcanoes that we mentioned previously, of typical animals of the Andean highlands such as the llama, the alpaca, the vicuña and the guanaco and of large lagoons in which birds such as flamingos live.

In addition, in this place are the Sumbay Caves, where more than 500 rock art paintings are preserved between 6,000 and 8,000 years old. Among the drawings that you can see here, are the typical camelids of this Andean region in a resting situation.

How to get there: to get to the Salinas and Aguada National Reserve you will have to take a taxi in the center of Arequipa that will take you to Chiguata, 25 km from the city. Once here, you have two options, continue with the taxi to the reserve or make the way on foot, in a simple walk that lasts around two hours.

4. Yanahura Viewpoint

If you are one of those who likes to have a 360 view of the city you visit, you have to visit the Yanahura Viewpoint. Located in the picturesque district of the same name, this viewpoint offers one of the most spectacular views of Arequipa, with the city at the foot of its three most representative volcanoes: Misti, Chachani and Pichu Pichu. Furthermore, another of the attractions of this place are its characteristic white ashlar arches, in which you can read phrases from illustrious people of Peru.

How to get there: the Yanahuara viewpoint is located just 10 minutes walk from the center of Arequipa, so you can get there on foot.

5. Choqolaqa Stone Forest

The cover photo of this article and one of the 10 places in Peru that you don’t know exist. The Choqolaqa Stone Forest seems like a landscape from another planet, the setting of a Hollywood Martian fiction or even a surrealist painting by Dalí. It is also known as Nueva Arequipa, and legend says that one day its inhabitants stopped respecting their Apus and as punishment everything turned to stone.

How to get there: From Arequipa you must go to Tisco, a journey that takes around 5 hours. From Tisco you can ask the locals how to get to Choqolaqa, which is about two hours away. Due to the complexity of getting there, we recommend hiring a tour operator that offers this visit from Arequipa.

Finally, we know that you have to keep communication with your relatives and friends, that you need to be able to orient yourself in new cities, that you might need help with translation and that you might need to search for restaurants or hotels.  That’s why with PeruSIM you can buy a SIM card including the data plan of your need without having to worry about high roaming costs .
