The Voice Kids move audience to tears with astonishingly powerful Simon & Garfunkel song

Art Garfunkel gets ready to return to the live stage after lockdown.

Listen to this article

Simon & Garfunkel were one of the greatest duos in pop history, propelled by Paul Simon's masterful songwriting, song-spotting and arranging, and the melding of their two voices.

And it was the tender beauty of Art Garfunkel's voice that always stood out.

Paul Simon sadly retired from touring in 2018 after his Farewell Tour, meaning that we won't ever get another reunion, but Garfunkel continues on, and listening to him singing earlier this year you realise what a blessing that is.

"How I've missed performing," says Art after singing the opening verses of 'Scarborough Fair/Canticle'.

"It's been over a year now, so I wanna gather with my audiences this fall, and this is my calling card."

Garfunkel and Simon jointly arranged 'Scarborough Fair/Canticle' from the traditional English ballad, and the song appeared on the duo's 1966 album Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme.

It was released as a single a couple of years later, after it featured on the soundtrack to The Graduate.

Art returns to the live stage with a string of live shows in the US and Europe in 2022, having last performed at the Maxwell C King Center for the Performing Arts in Melbourne, Florida on March 10, 2020.

About Art Garfunkel

Art Garfunkel - Interview

  by nick dent-robinson, published: 14 / 6 / 2019.

Art Garfunkel - Interview

Art Garfunkel speaks to Nick Dent-Robinson about his latest solo tour, his recent autobiography and his memories of touring the UK in the 1960s as one half of the iconic Simon and Garfunkel.

Following on from Paul Simon's recent announcement that he is to cease touring - with a final concert in Flushing Meadows, New York - Art Garfunkel, the other half of the iconic Simon and Garfunkel duo, is undertaking a Spring tour of the UK. He began the tour at Oxford's New Theatre. Shortly before his appearance there he said, “I have chosen the material very carefully for this tour. I'll be singing and playing guitar and keyboards, and will include many of the better known Simon and Garfunkel numbers, as well as some solo hits and carefully selected covers. I also intend to read some extracts from my new autobiography, 'What Is It All But Luminous: Notes From An Underground Man'. “I don't think of this as a tour. It is just what I do, what I've always done. I go out on the road and do shows, I sing and talk. My booking agent sends me to venues all over the world and I love every moment of it. “England does bring back fond memories of Paul and my earliest days performing together. Way back in the earlier part of the Sixties we hitchhiked around England, just busking to earn ourselves supper and a place to stay. We were in Oxford then, and the students there were generous. We also busked in the market-place of a little town nearby called Wallingford - but nobody there was very interested in us! On that trip we got stuck waiting for a change of train on Crewe station which was where that song lyric from 'Homeward Bound' about "Sitting in a railway station..." came from. Though we finished off the song in Widnes, near Liverpool, where I think we also had a long wait for a train. We were also in Scarborough, Yorkshire and heard about the ancient fair. It was a wonderful summer and maybe we were both at our creative peak, not that we knew that back then! But that time in England gave me a lasting love of the country and I am very happy to be back here performing again. Maybe there will even be some Wallingford folk out in the New Theatre audience this time who have paid to see me. Or maybe there won't be!”

Arthur Ira “Art” Garfunkel is a Grammy Award winning American folk rock and soft rock singer from Queens, New York.

Born on 5 November 1941 in Forest Hills, Queens, New York, and had a love for singing at a very young age. When he was in sixth grade he was cast in the school play production of “Alice In Wonderland” and met his future singing partner Paul Simon. In 1963 Simon and Garfunkel reformed after taking a break to attend separate colleges, and released their first album entitled “Wednesday Morning, 3A.M” through Columbia records in 1964. Unfortunately the album didn’t fare well resulting in their parting ways once again; that is, until producer Tom Wilson lifted the single “The Sound of Silence” and dubbed an electric backing to it and re-released it, launching to number one on the Billboard Charts.Together again, the duo went on to record four more albums, “Sounds of Silence,” “Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme,” “Bookends” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”

During a three-year hiatus starting in 1970 Garfunkel spent time as an actor and as a math teacher. He spent the better part of the 70s on and off working with Simon, releasing a Greatest Hits album in 1972. In 1978 Garfunkel released his album “Watermark” an “Fate for Breakfast” in 1979. Unfortunately his album “Scissor Cuts” didn’t fare well and an unfortunate personal problem, he left the music scene in 1985.

His retirement from music lasted until 1988 when he released “Lefty” and in 1990 Simon and Garfunkel was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2003 Garfunkel made his songwriting debut on his “Everything Wants To Be Noticed” album. Then in 2006 he signed with Rhino Records and continued to tour both as a solo artist and along with Simon.

Live reviews

I was front row and about 6 feet away from Artie! The concert got off to a late start, not sure why though. At about 8:15pm Tab Laven walks out on stage to applause, Artie immediately follows him. Artie started the show with April Come She Will, followed by The Boxer. He was in a great mood and playful and funny and snarky. At one point a couple came in late and he said, “Go ahead find your seats but we’re not doing The Boxer again. Everyone laughed. He only did part of A Heart In New York and then immediately went into All I Know and did all of that song.

He mentioned many times how happy he was to be there and a few times he mentioned how happy he was that the theater was sold out. There was a lot of love in that theater last nite. Artie was loving the audience and they were loving him. It was great.

He looked great too, low rise black skinny jeans, a white button shirt, vest and a purple tie. The black low rise skinny jeans looked better from the front than the back.

There was one WTF moment. I don’t know what he heard or saw or what was going through his mind but he said, “Do I hear a little puppy? Oh puppy don’t do Bridge Over Troubled Water.” I have no idea what that was about and the rest of the audience seemed just as confused.

He said that his autobiography should be out by autumn of 2017.

After Scarborough Fair he was talking about recording it and said the first thing they did was put down the guitar track and he said Paul Simon’s playing was pretty much as good as Tab’s! I have to say Tab’s guitar playing was excellent. It totally made the show.

The highlight of the concert for me was 99 Miles From LA. He didn’t do that at the 2014 concert I went to. 99 Miles From LA is my favorite Artie song and its the one that first got me interested in him.

I was also very pleased when he did For Emily Whenever I May Find Her. There are just some songs you want to hear live and that is one of them. I could have done without Kathy’s Song. I have never liked that song. At one point after talking about singing in the synagogue as a child he sang Vee Mah Lay and it was the most beautiful thing to come out of his mouth.

As usual he only did part of Bridge Over Troubled Water. He received a standing ovation after that and seemed very pleased with it! I thought the show was over after that because he and Tab disappeared from the stage, but a few seconds later they reappeared and did Now I Lay Me Down which was very sweet.

At the end of the show he took his bows and blew a kiss to the audience. He also put his arms out and kind of encircled the audience then hugged himself as if he were hugging the audience. He then put his hand over his heart and smiled. It was really sweet.

Art Garfunkel I was lucky enough to see him in 2009, the venue was small but had an intimate feeling. Lets face it, this was never going to be a gig for a mosh pit.

The stage, rather than running across the front of the venue, it was in the shape of a semi circle that allowed the audience to be seated in an arc around Art and the rest of the band, which was conservatively made up of a small number of musicians.

With a catalogue of songs as large as his (and Paul Simons) it was hard to know where he’d begin. But he began with All I Know, a soft, beautiful song and one of his most famous. He went on to play a mixture of his own tracks and classics made famous by Simon & Garfunkel such as The Boxer, El Conor Pasa, Kathy’s Song, Sound of Silence before finishing with Bridge Over Trouble Water.

Throughout he constantly told stories from his past, giving the audience an insight into what inspired the songs. Many of the stories sent the audience into fits of laughter and the performance of each song were meet with a wholehearted applause. I have been listening to Art Garfunkel since I was a child. My mother was a huge fan and I spent much time immersed, whether I wanted to be or not. It wasn't until I was an adult that I fully appreciated his and Paul Simons songwriting genius. The lyrics are profound, raw, honest and beautiful. The songs are like stories, stories that you can get sucked into and lost in. Art voice is remarkable, a voice that stops you in your tracks, beautiful, soulful and in many ways haunting.

It was a wonderfully entertaining and interesting evening by a legendary figure in music. Don't miss this opportunity to see one of the greats.

The show was good, always wonderful to see such a big name performer. Great song choices, however! I have to wonder if Art is having some health issues as he was actually quite bizarre in a couple moments. Saying nonsense things and unprofessionally reaming out someone who took his photo claiming they used a flash (the person he reamed out did not as i was sitting in same row and saw it for myself). He ranted ad nauseam about "stealing his image", how now look what you've done making me lose my concentration! He was really over the top. Mind you this is after he bragged about performing infront of 600,000 in a years time with Simon & Garfunkle. After the show, he signed a few autographs for fans waiting on the sidewalk. He signed a photo for a young man, a S & G album cover that already had Paul Simon's signature on it. The kid was so happy. Then a few moments later he asked the guy where he got the album signed by Paul, the guy said he bought it that way, that the signature was authenticated with a certification. HE PROCEEDS TO TAKE THE MARKER AND CROSSES OUT VIGOROUSLY HIS AUTOGRAPH ON THE ALBUM HE JUST SIGNED FOR THE GUY! So i have to say either he is just an angry bitter man with no filters, or he is headed to some health issue. I wish him the best of luck as he is a wonderful performer and legend nevertheless. But for the ultimate fans at the show and afterwards, he surely had us all walking away feeling rather sadly perplexed.

One half of the world's most esteemed songwriting duos Simon & Garfunkel, Art was always criticised to have not been as creative within the pairing although you cannot discredit his additions to the group when you see the man perform live. Unfortunately there are no signs for permanent reunion of the duo so your best opportunity is to catch them perform solo.

This is still a very enjoyable night of music with a culmination of Art's popular solo albums, a couple of Paul Simon's tracks and the wonderful combining magic that occurred when the two came together. The audience is very enthusiastic throughout the show, these songs do not appear to age and will have affected people's lives in ways that Art seems aware of this evening as he delivers the likes of 'Scarborough Fair' with a huge amount of sincerity. He is not a hugely talkative performer however this does not bother the audience as it means he can fit in an impressive twenty tracks that come to a blissful end with 'Bridge Over Troubled Water'.

Had a wonderful evening on November 30, 2015 at Kongresshaus Zürich!

I had last seen Art Garfunkel at the last concert he played with Paul Simon in Switzerland in '83, which also was my first ever concert I was allowed to attend :-)

So many years later, Art exceeded my expectations, loved his voice, his choice of songs and was pleasantly surprised to meet his son, Art Junior, who performed some very impressive duets with his very proud dad!

Also loved Art's insightful and witty poems and look very much forward to reading his book due out next year, I am sure to find lots of interesting stories there!

Art just started what I suspect to become an extensive tour of Europe and I can only recommend everyone to treat yourselves to a couple of hours in the company of this very humble yet impressive legend of our generation!!

I grew up with Art´s music. How my dad made me listen Simon and Garfunkel when I was only 4 years old on turntable. As they sang together in the Bookends theme song:

''Can you imagine us years from today, sharing a park bench quietly. How terribly strange to be 70''. Art now being 73 himself I can honestly say his voice starts to come back to the way it was.

Art sang his famous songs from the Simon and Garfunkel era, as well as some of his own classics. In this night venue it was music the way God must have had intended it one day. Just a man, backed by a guitar player, singing touching songs and reading soft poems.

He mentioned he won't rule out a future Simon and Garfunkel tour, since him and Paul are still close friends.

A great evening's entertainment which had all the audience on the feet to applaud. A good mix of Simon & Garfunkel oldies plus a few original Art Garfunkel songs and loved his son James aka Art Junior singing too - what an amazing voice! Interspersed with the music was a selection of Art's poetry and lifelong musings - made for an intriguing entertainment. Highly recommended.

I've seen Art many times, with and without Paul. My last time seeing Art was more of a poetry session, disbursed with several songs. Yes, as mentioned here, he couldn't hit many notes of yesteryear. That's one thing; but the Q&A session was quite telling. He was incredibly rude to the crowd if the questions didn't appeal to him. A true [unwarranted] egomaniac.

ilene-ostrov-brody’s profile image

Very very disappointed. The concert was about 2 hours long with a 20 minutes break. Fine with that. But the problem was that he couldn't hit the notes which I wasn't bothered about considering his age but more than half the concert was him just reading letters. I went to hear him sing not recite poetry. Feel a bit ripped off.

Absolutely loved every song .

Such a great night listening to a legend. A great venue and Art was so personable. Loved his poetic stories before each song . Will definitely go to see him next time he is playing.

COMPLETES WALK ACROSS EUROPE, FROM IRELAND TO ISTANBUL

UK CONCERT TOUR KICKED OFF LAST WEEK, TO BE FOLLOWED BY

SHOWS IN JAPAN AND A 2015 EUROPEAN LEG

art garfunkel tour uk

Iconic singer and renaissance man ART GARFUNKEL recently finished his walk across Europe. Starting in western Ireland, he reached Istanbul, Turkey in August, 2014. After a little time off, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member returned to Europe this past Friday (9/5) for a five-show U.K. trek.

Garfunkel will bring his two-man show (with guitarist Tab Laven) to venues across the U.K., beginning in Manchester, England and wrapping this Thursday at London’s Royal Festival Hall . His live set encompasses his solo hits, Simon & Garfunkel songs, cuts from his favorite songwriters–Jimmy Webb, Randy Newman, A.C. Jobim and Paul Simon–parts of his new book, and Q&A.

After the European dates, Garfunkel returns to the U.S. for shows through late November, after which he’ll head to Japan for six dates (full itinerary below). In March 2015 , he will return to Europe for shows in Ireland, Holland, Belgium, France, Germany and Denmark.

Garfunkel first traversed Japan on foot, and then the U.S. between ’83 and ’97 which was celebrated with the live Across America concert film, and he began the European trek the next year. “I walk for the exercise, for the spiritual flush,” says Garfunkel. “I sing, I write, I try to connect with the wonder of it all. It’s been a beautiful, healthy, and fine madness.”

After taking some time off to rest his voice, Garfunkel has returned with a vengeance, performing just under 100 shows since early 2013. In a review of a July Los Angeles-area concert, Daily Variety said he ” …connects emotionally with several songs from his post S&G career, including a remarkably powerful ’99 Miles From L.A.’ and ‘Corcovado,’ which he described as a ‘mature love song’…Part of the show’s appeal is Garfunkel’s laser-like focus on the theme of love’s redemptive powers and there’s nary a moment in the show when he strays from a yearning idealism and emotional purity that would seem too precious in hands less sure and a spirit less seasoned…Other tales are closer to home for Garfunkel and packed with emotional resonance, such as his appreciation for his late father, who he credits with bringing Caruso records to their home in Queens back in his youth, thus setting him on his career path…Since he also leads his audience through beautifully rendered valleys and delicate side-streets, the combination makes for a richly rewarding, unique evening.”

Check out an interview with ART here, where he appeared on “CBS This Morning” reading a “Note To Self,” where he looked back at his younger self: http://www.cbsnews.com/videos/art-garfunkel-writes-a-note-to-his-younger-self/ and a “10 Records That Changed My Life” piece on Music Radar here: http://www.musicradar.com/us/news/guitars/art-garfunkel-the-10-records-that-changed-my-life-596538/1

Blessed with what the New York Times described as a “beautiful countertenor,” singer ART GARFUNKEL has made an indelible mark on the music world as both a solo artist and half of the unrivaled Simon & Garfunkel. He has also enjoyed a successful film career, published a book of poetry and released 12 original solo albums, the most recent being SOME ENCHANTED EVENING in 2007. Then, in 2012, he most proudly released his life’s body of work, a 2-CD compendium, THE SINGER.  Art and his beautiful wife, actress Kathryn Luce Garfunkel, have two sons, 23 year-old Arthur Junior and eight-year-old Beau Daniel.

Why Paul Simon Reunited with Art Garfunkel After Bitter Split for the Concert in Central Park (Exclusive)

"We forgot that essentially, we were done as a team," Simon says about his 1981 reunion with Garfunkel in the new documentary 'In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon'

Simon & Garfunkel ’s 1981 Central Park concert was the first time Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel performed together as Simon & Garfunkel for a full show after the release of their final album, Bridge Over Troubled Water , in 1970. The concert turned out to be a new beginning for the duo — and a new ending.

In part two of the new documentary In Restless Dreams: The Music of Paul Simon , which premieres March 24 on MGM+, Simon, 82, recounts the pivotal Central Park show, what it meant for the future of Simon & Garfunkel and the nerve-wracking moment when a man rushed the stage.

He explains that when he was asked to do the concert, he had just faced a hurdle in his career. “Because [his 1980 album] One-Trick Pony was a flop, when they asked me to do a concert in Central Park, I thought, ‘Well I just had this big flop, maybe I should ask Artie to come and sing some songs on this.'”

What they thought would be a small benefit concert turned into half a million people gathering on the Great Lawn in Central Park to watch the highly anticipated reunion of the former duo, and while it began well, the concert was interrupted.

“I saw him get on the stage out of the corner of my eye,” Simon says of the concertgoer who jumped on stage while he was singing “The Late Great Johnny Ace.” The man was quickly pulled offstage by security, and Simon kept performing, while Garfunkel was off to the side watching the episode unfold with no reaction.

“The thing that’s interesting about it is like, my band, they’re ready to jump in," Simon adds. "Artie was sitting on the air… he was not taking a bullet for me.”

The success of the show led to a brief revival for Simon & Garfunkel. “After the concert in Central Park with Simon & Garfunkel was so big — it was such a big hit — and then that sort of forced us into... forced me into putting the group back together again and doing a tour,” Simon recalls.

The “Kodachrome” singer says he decided to forget his past grievances with Garfunkel, 82. “We were famously antagonistic, but I thought, 'You know what? I am going to put that all aside and have a good reunited tour with Artie.'"

Simon adds that the tour ended up being “a hit,” and the pair discussed reuniting for good. “We said — the album I was working on, Hearts and Bones — that’ll be a Simon & Garfunkel record."

Things changed, however, when Simon realized how different Garfunkel’s involvement was this time around.

“The way we used to work is, I would write songs, and we would work out the harmonies and sing them together. We were friends, we were hanging out,” Simon says. “But, by the time we were doing Hearts and Bones , Artie’s idea was ‘Give me the songs, and I am going to go to Switzerland and walk and make up the harmonies.’"

"It was a recapitulation of he’s in Mexico making a movie. Well, now he wanted to smoke and walk through Switzerland and make up harmonies to these songs and then he would send them back and we would look at it and say, ‘What is this?’ It didn’t sound like the old Simon & Garfunkel. And I just said, ‘I can’t work this way.'”

Simon explains that he knew saying no to Garfunkel meant the new album would not be as successful, but it was a sacrifice he was willing to make. “I decided I’m not gonna do it, so I had to make an announcement: ' Hearts and Bones , it’s not gonna be a Simon & Garfunkel album.' Everybody was disappointed. So that record was kind of cursed before it really got off the ground."

While the Central Park concert appeared to be a turning point for Simon & Garfunkel, in reality, Simon says, it was just “a luxurious bandage.”

"The breakup that happened after [Garfunkel's 1970 film] Catch-22 was never repaired," he explains. "It was just a bandage put over it. But the bandage was such a luxurious bandage — the concert in Central Park — we forgot that essentially, we were done as a team.”

What Happened to Art Garfunkel? Find Out Where the Simon and Garfunkel Singer Is Today

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

As one half of the duo Simon & Garfunkel, Art Garfunkel won over fans of the rock and folk genres with his high-pitched tenor voice. Decades after the musical duo first achieved mainstream popularity, many have wondered what happened to Art and where he is now. Scroll below to find out.

What Happened to Art Garfunkel?

Born on November 5, 1941, in Queens, New York, Art developed a passion for performing when he was just a child. He ended up meeting his eventual singing partner, Paul Simon , in elementary school. In 1957, they teamed up to record the song “Hey, Schoolgirl,” which landed in the top 50 on the pop charts.

In 1964, Simon & Garfunkel released their debut studio album, Wednesday Morning, 3 a.m. , under Columbia Records. The album initially failed to bring the group success, leading them to disband. The trajectory of their music careers changed when producer Tom Wilson decided to remix their tune “The Sound of Silence.” The new additions to the track ultimately led the pair to find fame with the No. 1 song in the U.S.

Over the next few decades, the musicians released four more studio albums with hits like “Mrs. Robinson,” “Homeward Bound,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” “The Boxer” and more. Both Art and Paul also decided to pursue solo careers on top of their work as a duo. In 1990, they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The longtime friends ended up splitting multiple times throughout the years after their first album’s release. Art and Paul reunited in 2003 to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 45th Annual Grammys. Simon & Garfunkel ended up touring once more across the U.S. and Europe after the appearance.

Where Is Art Garfunkel Now?

In January 2010, Art began experiencing vocal problems after choking on a piece of lobster at a restaurant. The incident caused him to have a hoarse voice and issues swallowing. After a trip to the doctor, the performer was told that one of his vocal cords was stiff and thicker than the other one.

“As the weeks ensued, I saw that I couldn’t finesse my singing in the mid-range,” Art told Rolling Stone in February 2014. “I could do the high notes and the low notes. High notes are my stock in trade, thank God. But I couldn’t sing, ‘When you’re weary, feeling small.’ I couldn’t do anything in the middle where you need that finesse. It’s indescribable. I was crude instead of fine.”

At the time, he was happy to announce that he regained his singing voice back by 96 percent and was looking forward to getting back on stage. In April 2023, Art’s team revealed in a statement that he decided “not to return to touring for the foreseeable future and has canceled all upcoming dates.”

Is Art Garfunkel Married?

The Grammy winner has been married twice. Art and his first wife, Linda Marie Grossman , were married from 1972 to 1975. He walked down the aisle with his second wife, Kim Garfunkel , in 1988.

Does Art Garfunkel Have Any Children?

Art and Kim are parents to two children. Their eldest son, James, was born in 1990. The couple welcomed their second son, Beau, via surrogate in 2005.

“It’s intoxicating” he reflected on fatherhood to People after the birth of his youngest child. “You’re being pinched out of normal life. You are going to be chumped and made silly and startlingly ecstatic.”
