Dunedin Airport has been giving a warm southern welcome to travellers since 1962. In 1996 the airport was extended and upgraded to accept international flights, and nowadays sees nearly 1 million satisfied passengers each year Proudly celebrating the grit, big heart and “work hard, play hard” attitude of the south, the Southern Man sculpture can be found outside the main entrance. South Island artist Sam Mahon welded together 50 bronze sections to create the work, which was a generous millennium gift from legendary local brewery Speight’s. Spare a moment to take a look before you leave, and be sure to stroke the horse’s nose – it’s said to bring good luck for your travels.

Airports are busy environments and for some people this can be a stressful experience, especially if you or someone with you has a disability which is not visible. It is our job to make your time at Dunedin Airport as enjoyable as possible and take any stress away.

The Hidden Disability Sunflower is a symbol used globally to give you or your loved ones with disabilities a way to discreetly indicate a non-obvious disability and that additional support, time, or understanding may be needed.

At Dunedin Airport, our staff are trained to recognise the sunflower lanyard and provide you with the assistance you may need at any point in your journey. There is no cost for the lanyard just all part of our role of providing a great Customer Experience.

Collecting a sunflower lanyard at Dunedin Airport:

• When you arrive at Dunedin Airport make your way to the Airport Information Desk located on the ground floor of the terminal.
• Ask the Dunedin Airport Customer Experience staff member at the desk for a sunflower lanyard. Easy as that. Either you or someone travelling with you can wear the lanyard – it’s your call.

The lanyard doesn't provide a personal staff escort through the airport process. If you require this level of assistance or wheelchair assistance, your airline is best placed to help you. Be sure to contact your airline ahead of time to make them aware of your assistance requirements.

Babies can be fed and changed in the parent room on Level 1, to the right of the escalators. Facilities include a microwave, change facility, nappy disposal and toilet.

Dunedin Airport offers a service in which luggage is stored for a daily fee.  The luggage will need to be assessed and appropriate customer details taken before storage can take place. The cost of storage is $5 per day per piece of luggage. This can be pre-paid or paid upon collection.

Before the bags can be accepted, they will need to be screened by Aviation Security through the out of gauge (oversize) belt. If Aviation Security is not present, we cannot accept the bag. Even if the luggage is cleared, storage will be at the discretion of airport staff.

Once the necessary details have been taken then the luggage can be stored in the storeroom under the stairs on the ground floor. Bikes and other oversized items can be stored in the old transformer room.

Dunedin Airport is a breeze for people with reduced mobility. Wheelchairs are available for travellers. Just ask staff at the Information Desk or an airline staff member and they’ll be more than happy to help. Lifts operate between all floors. Dedicated disabled toilets can be found within the Ladies’ and Men’s rooms on both the ground floor and Level 1.

Customer service staff Dunedin Airport’s friendly customer service staff can help you with anything you need to know about the airport. They operate from the Information Desk adjacent to the baggage claim on the ground floor. They can also provide accommodation information and assistance for the less mobile, and answer general enquiries.

Mobility parking Designated mobility parking areas are easy to find in the car park nearest the terminal entrance. Don’t forget to display your mobility sticker, please. If you require a sticker, please see airport staff at the information counter.

The information desk can be found on the ground floor, directly in front of the main doors alongside the baggage claim area. If unattended, please pick up the phone and speak with one of our Customer Service staff, they’ll be happy to help with any difficulties or queries you may have. Brochures on Dunedin’s accommodation and tourist options are available, plus direct dial phones to local accommodation, transport and attractions. Let us look after your car keys safely while you travel. Complete a key-drop envelope and pop it in our secure key box at the desk. Only $5 for holiday peace of mind.

Not only do these high-end bags have room for your travel toiletry bags , but they’re also likely to last you years, if not decades—all while making your days en route feel like a true treat.

I’m a travel expert. These are 5 things I would never do when planning a trip

Traveling is one of life’s great joys — from seeing new places to meeting people from another culture, seeing the wider world is something to be treasured. But even the most experienced travelers can find some moments stressful.

On May 8, travel journalist Mark Ellwood joined TODAY to talk about some of his best tips after a lifetime of living out of his own suitcase.

He offered five things he would never do if you want your trip to go off without a hitch.

1. Travel without insurance

Ellwood says that travel insurance is often very low cost and can save you in a pinch.

“It’s the same price as a cup of coffee per day, give or take, and buys you peace of mind when something goes awry," he said.

Ellwood notes many credit cards offer built-in insurance for any trips purchased on that card but he is also a fan of travelinsurance.com or insuremytrip.com. Both are marketplaces where you can shop around for the best plan.  

2. Overlook considering all airports

While it might not be the most convenient, Ellwood suggests checking the wider metropolitan area for flights at nearby airports.

“Look for airports nearby — you might score a deal better by searching for, perhaps, Stewart, New York, rather than Newark, (New Jersey)," he said. "Always check nearby airports to both your point of origin and destination.”

3. Exclude lesser-known carriers

“Don’t forget lesser-known carriers," Ellwood says, adding that Breeze Airways his is go-to carrier. He notes that Breeze's home bases are in the southeast and include the following:

4. Neglect geotagging luggage

There's no worse feeling while traveling than waiting for your luggage to appear on the baggage carousel, only for it to never materialize.

But geotagging your luggage can at least help you track it down.

“Geotag your luggage — whether AirTag or similar," Ellwood says. "You’ll always know where your luggage is ... or isn’t."

If your bag doesn't make it to your final destination, you can always tell the airline where it is to help them track it down. 

5. Think there’s a magic time to book a flight

Despite years of rumors, there's really no day or time that's best to book your travel.

“There is no magic day date time to score a deal," Ellwood says. "Instead, the best time is whenever you receive an alert that your route’s gone on sale."

The way to do this is to track your flights ahead of booking them. Ellwood suggests using Google Flights — just type in where and when you're looking to fly, then toggle the alert tab so you'll be notified of any changes.

"This allows you to watch how much it’ll cost and swoop in the moment an airline cuts the price when you want to fly," he says.

Southwest Airlines 'looking into' video of woman lying inside overhead bin before takeoff

Passengers on a Southwestern Airlines flight were in for a surprise when they spotted a woman lying inside an overhead luggage compartment while boarding.

Video recorded by Monique Guzman shows a woman lying next to a suitcase, as a flight attendant is heard welcoming passengers on board the aircraft.

Southwest Airlines, in an email to USA TODAY, said the airline is looking into the incident and did not share further information. Storyful reported that the woman was seen on a flight from Albuquerque to Phoenix on May 6.

Guzman told Storyful that she "saw a head pop out of the overhead" as she got on the plane and that other passengers were unfazed by her presence and were “just casually walking past her.”

A flight attendant found her before takeoff, said Guzman. However, it is not immediately clear if she was removed from the overhead bin and how long she was there.

Earlier, in 2019, a Southwest flight attendant had crawled into a plane's overhead bin as passengers boarded a flight from Nashville to Atlanta. The airline, at the time, had said that the attendant was having a moment of fun and expressing her sense of humor.
