More facilities to transport to the gates......felt too much walking distance

Just happy I flew Qatar Airways awesome no wonder they are #1 in the world right now! The food was just delicious, very courteous, professional crew.

It was good no problems made it on time for the next flight overseas!

It was a really long flight from Doha to Philadelphia and it was overall a good one. The one area that I would comment on is that there is a lot of single-use plastic and disposables in the meal service for American Airlines. It would be great to see more circular options in the meal service to reduce the amount of waste.

Suddenly Flight has been change by Qatar and there’s no information is there of us from Bom to Doha and counter person is behaving like Qatar owner next I will not buy Qatar and I will not suggest anyone to fly in Qatar

The crew was fantastic and the over flight was perfect as well.

They shld provide food. Between food they are giving 10 hours gap which is toooo much

The crew was great and the food and liquor offerings were good. Seats were a bit cramped. Flight arrived early at destination. That's a plus.

All over with Qatar airlines my experience was really bad due to delays and then putting me on different airlines and after 8 hours of wait I had to listen to their is no plane to fly for another 24 hours. Wore experience ever.

I had already opted for Vegan food before 2 months yet they say we have no record for it,

The check in was horrible. I stood in line for 1 hour to check in with an Air France ticket. Then I was told I had to go to Delta counter onstead to check in instead. It made no sense.

Medíocre. The food wasn't good (although not bad, bad) and the staff wasn't kind. I asked for n extra blanket, the steward never came back, serving us roughly.

Generally good. The crew is excellent. The food could be better.

They wanted to close counter although they did not provide the wheelchair requested which ended by going alone to transit security and lost long time and they did not want to wait .

Did not find the wheelchair that supposed to assist and went to a long queue for transit security chk which was very slow and boarding desk wanted to close counter although that they knew that I am minutes away because of their mistake of not providing the wheelchair.

They charge me for luggage which is was included on the ticket

Business class in the second leg - CDG-EVN was a disaster.

Everything went smoothly with Air France. There was a delay in departure which seemed to relate to the immigration services being short staffed.

We transited through Chad and what was supposed to be a 1hr 20 minutes transit time lasted over 4hrs. We didn't get regular updates until we complained. After a 10hr flight from Paris no form of refreshment given and finally arrived Abuja over 6hrs later and none of my bags came

Lost luggage, 2 bags were badly damaged and one of the bags came open.

Dubai plans to move its busy international airport to a $35 billion new facility within 10 years

Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel, will move its operations to the city-state's second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches "within the next 10 years" in a project worth nearly $35 billion, its ruler said Sunday, April 28, 2024. Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international travel, will move its operations to the city-state's second, sprawling airfield in its southern desert reaches “within the next 10 years” in a project worth nearly $35 billion, its ruler said Sunday.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's announcement marks the latest chapter in the rebound of its long-haul carrier Emirates after the coronavirus pandemic grounded international travel. Plans have been on the books for years to move the operations of the airport known as DXB to Al Maktoum International Airport at Dubai World Central which had also been delayed by the repercussions of the sheikhdom's 2009 economic crisis.

“We are building a new project for future generations, ensuring continuous and stable development for our children and their children in turn,” Sheikh Mohammed said in an online statement. “Dubai will be the world’s airport, its port, its urban hub and its new global center.”

The announcement included computer-rendered images of curving, white terminal reminiscent of the traditional Bedouin tents of the Arabian Peninsula. The airport will include five parallel runways and 400 aircraft gates, the announcement said. The airport now has just two runways, like Dubai International Airport.

The financial health of the carrier Emirates has served as a barometer for the aviation industry worldwide and the wider economic health of this city-state. Dubai and the airline rebounded quickly from the pandemic by pushing forward with tourism even as some countries more slowly came out of their pandemic crouch.

The number of passengers flying through DXB surged last year beyond its total for 2019 with 86.9 million passengers. Its 2019 annual traffic was 86.3 million passengers. The airport had 89.1 million passengers in 2018 — its busiest-ever year before the pandemic, while 66 million passengers passed through in 2022.

Earlier in February, Dubai announced its best-ever tourism numbers, saying it hosted 17.15 million international overnight visitors in 2023. Average hotel occupancy stood at around 77%. Its boom-and-bust real estate market remains on a hot streak , nearing all-time high valuations.

But as those passenger numbers skyrocketed, it again put new pressure on the capacity of DXB, which remains constrained on all sides by residential neighborhoods and two major highways.

Al Maktoum International Airport, some 45 kilometers (28 miles) away from DXB, opened in 2010 with one terminal. It served as a parking lot for Emirates' double-decker Airbus A380s and other aircraft during the pandemic and slowly has come back to life with cargo and private flights in the time since. It also hosts the biennial Dubai Air Show and has a vast, empty desert in which to expand.

The announcement by Sheikh Mohammed noted Dubai's plans to expand further south. Already, its nearby Expo 2020 site has been offering homes for buyers.

“As we build an entire city around the airport in Dubai South, demand for housing for a million people will follow,” Dubai's ruler said. “It will host the world’s leading companies in the logistics and air transport sectors.”

However, financial pressures have halted the move in the past. Dubai's 2009 financial crisis, brought on by the Great Recession, forced Abu Dhabi to provide the city-state with a $20 billion bailout.

Meanwhile, the city-state is still trying to recover after the heaviest rainfall ever recorded in the UAE , which disrupted flights and commerce for days.

Seagliders that travel at high speeds over water will be built in the UAE following the signing of an agreement between the US maritime transport company Regent and Abu Dhabi Investment Office on Thursday.

Boston start-up Regent has also signed an agreement with Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport to integrate its electric-powered seaglider into the existing UAE transportation network, with a focus on high-impact routes, such as offshore services to Delma Island and Sir Bani Yas Island.

Regent is in the development stages of its passenger craft, Viceroy, which uses wing-in-ground effect to travel at speeds of up to 290kph within a wingspan of the water's surface, cutting travel times between coastal cities by more than half.

The company, which has demonstrated its float, foil and fly technology in testing on a quarter-scale model, is now building a full-scale 20-metre wingspan model capable of carrying 12 passengers and two crew to test its use before going into full production next year at its base in Rhode Island.

Regent has had significant support from the industry and investors in raising its $60 million Series A Funding, including Abu Dhabi's Strategic Development Funds and Neom Investment Fund , which made the single largest investment in the round.

There has also been backing from Japan Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Lockheed Martin and Shark Tank star and billionaire Mark Cuban , with total investment now standing at $90 million.

Co-founder and chief executive Billy Thalheimer said Regent also has a backorder of more than $9 billion from airline and ferry operators for both the Viceroy craft and the larger 100-passenger Monarch, which he expects will transform regional transport for coastal areas.

Regent has manufacturing and test facilities in Rhode Island and is "looking at other sites within the US" to develop its building capacity, Mr Thalheimer told The National .

To help meet orders in the Middle East, Europe and Indo-Pacific regions, Regent will "localise sea glider manufacturing in Abu Dhabi", he said.

"We’re working right now with Adio on the plan. Our intention is to establish manufacturing by the end of the decade," he said.

"The next step is to pull in all the relevant players, do site identification, manufacturing readiness and figure out what the whole plan looks like as to when can we start and what manufacturing will entail in Abu Dhabi."

Regent will be part of the Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (Savi) cluster, located in Masdar City, which aims to develop smart and self-driving vehicles for air, land and sea use.

Established as a multi-modal hub in October, Savi is expected to contribute between Dh90 billion and Dh120 billion ($24.5 billion to $32.7 billion) to the UAE's economy and generate up to 50,000 jobs.

Badr Al Olama, the director general of Adio, said Regent will "shape the future of coastal transportation".

"With immense speed and efficiency, I’m confident Abu Dhabi will see the global deployment of electric seagliders and these will dramatically change how goods and people move between the world’s coastal areas going forward," Mr Al Olama said in a news release on Thursday.

Production capacity will depend on demand, but Regent already has firm orders from an unnamed Abu Dhabi-based commercial operator and another in Egypt.

Final details on what will be built in Abu Dhabi are still being thrashed out, he said, but the plan is to have full production facilities in the emirate.

"What we're manufacturing is still part of the discussion," Mr Thalheimer said.

"The intention is to manufacture something but the goal would be full seagliders, and the next step is really figuring out what it actually looks like, putting the nuts and bolts of the details of the deal together."

Fly like a bird

The 100-passenger Monarch is expected to transform regional transport for coastal areas. Photo: Regent

Wing-in-ground effect technology has been around for more than 60 years and is based on using aerodynamic lift plus air pressure generated by flying close to the water surface – the same principle that allows gulls to glide low over the water.

Regent’s seaglider is designed with an intermediary position between boat and glider, popping up on a hydrofoil, allowing it to navigate busier waterways and inclement weather.

Once it has motored out of a harbour on a hydrofoil, the seaglider takes off at a low speed using the water as a runway, then flies over the waves at a top speed of 290kph.

It allows for quick access around coastal waters, particularly from islands to mainland, and is capable of serving routes of up to 300km with existing battery technology and 800km with next-gen batteries.

Abu Dhabi's Department of Transport, in an agreement announced at the DriftX event on Thursday, will integrate the use of seagliders in the emirate, starting with Delma Island, where 10,000 residents mainly use a once-daily flight to access services on the mainland, and Sir Bani Yas Island, home to a protected wildlife reserve and the Desert Islands Resort & Spa by Anantara.

"Currently, it’s [Delma] serviced by Q400 turbo props with one flight a day," Mr Thalheimer said.

"You can imagine how inconvenient it is to have to take an aircraft which only goes once a day to leave your home to access economic opportunities, education, medical care. Seagliders increase the flexibility and access to the mainland for those on Delma Island."

Smart plans

Abu Dhabi has been working on providing residents with smarter, more efficient modes of transport.

In February, Abu Dhabi and Shenzhen signed a twin-city agreement to share knowledge and collaborate on smart city projects across several areas including infrastructure, city planning, green mobility, transport, advanced technology, autonomous solutions, sustainability and urban development.

Abu Dhabi is also trialling driverless taxis in the emirate, while flying taxis are expected to hit Abu Dhabi and Dubai skies next year, cutting travel times significantly between the two emirates.

Mr Thalheimer said the seagliders will also help with inter-emirate connectivity and offer commuters an option to avoid busy motorways between Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah.

"Right now, if you look at Abu Dhabi to Ras Al Khaimah, you're talking about a two and a half hour drive, at best. But [with seagliders] you will be able to do day trips and can do that trip in under an hour.

"It’s sort of like a Gulf Metro that seagliders would create here, which the DoT can operate."

The trip between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is one of the busiest road journeys in the UAE. Offering high-speed connections on water between the two cities would cut travel times by more than half.

"Seaglider would be about equal on that route. It would be a little faster than a car because you’re moving faster but obviously a car goes door to door but the seaglider has to go to the dock first.

"It would be about 25 minutes in terms of the voyage itself. So we can cut the travel time in half."

In December, Regent signed an agreement with Aramex, the Middle East's largest courier firm, to develop electric seagliders for middle-mile logistics.

It is also working with Saudi Arabia's Neom project to provide connectivity around the islands along the coastline, particularly Sindalah.

"Neom is looking for better connectivity – faster, cheaper, greener, more comfortable connectivity throughout the islands of the Red Sea," he said.

Of particular interest for airlines and ferry operators is the Monarch, which Mr Thalheimer said will enter into service "before the end of the decade".

"All of this technology, the ground effect even the hydrodynamics of the hydrofoil scales really well with size," he said.

"Aircraft flying at altitude, the bigger they get, the heavier they get, the more energy intensive they get, the harder it is to fly large aircraft with batteries."

He said ground effect offers an efficient form of flying that gives it a distinct advantage over aircraft.

"Always being over a place to land is very efficient in terms of how much reserve fuel you need to carry and the hydrodynamic scale very well with size," he said.

"You're talking 50 per cent reduction in operating costs, which ostensibly all gets passed on to the customer as savings by going to seagliders and by going to that large Monarch variant."

UAE air taxis: Archer Aviation, Abu Dhabi Investment Office set to launch electric aircraft in 2025

Archer Aviation and ADIO enter deal for in-country manufacture of aircraft and vertiports

Stock-Archer-Aviation

Dubai: Launch of full-scale air taxi services in the UAE is coming closer on the horizon with a new ‘framework agreement’ between Archer Aviation and Abu Dhabi Investment Office.

This will see Archer, which is into electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, take on in-country manufacturing, launch operations and training required before the services are launched.

As things stand now, the plan is to have these services up in the air ‘as soon as next year’.

“Archer has partnered with Falcon Aviation and Air Chateau to be our in-market air taxi operators,” said Adam Goldstein, founder and CEO of the company. “Falcon Aviation and Air Cheateau have locations in both Emirates and ADIO has commited to building additional vertiport infrastructure in Abu Dhabi

“Early operations will utilize a handful of aircraft. As manufacturing ramps up, the number of aircraft flying in market will scale accordingly.”

With the framework agreement in place, ADIO will support the development of vertiports, in collaboration with Archer and other air taxi operators, in locations throughout Abu Dhabi. Doing so would enhance the ‘urban air mobility infrastructure necessary for Archer to scale operations’.

Opening up whole new ways of travel

It was last year that the possibilities of air taxi services between major cities in the UAE using eVTOL aircraft showed up realizable business possibilities. These aircraft would operate at cruising altitude of 2,000 feet and the time for a flight will be between 10-30 minutes.

“Abu Dhabi is leading the way in accelerating the launch of electric air taxis globally,” said Badr Al-Olama, Director-General of ADIO.

“We are excited to support Archer toward establishing its international headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and to develop a comprehensive investment framework that will accelerate its progress towards manufacturing and operating its ‘Midnight’ aircraft in the UAE.”

The Archer Midnight aircraft can fit four passengers and a pilot on any one trip. Archer is flying Its Midnight prototype regularly at our flight test facility in Salinas, California,” said the CEO. “And on track to complete the first piloted, conforming eVTOL aircraft in the industry later this year.

“Our data science team does a tremendous amount of research and modeling to determine the best routes and locations in each market, so (that) we have a data-backed operational plan for each city we bring online.”

Feasible business model?

What the likely fares on a route such as Abu Dhabi-Dubai have not been set. “There are still more details to hash out before we can comfortably do so,” said Goldstein. “The projected operating economics support price per passenger mile costs similar to that of an ‘Uber Black Car’ with the pricing coming down to ‘Uber X’ equivalents as operations scale.” (Uber Black Car relates to a more luxury focused vehicle and service than is the norm.)

The Archer Aviation’s target is to replace 60- to 90-minute car commutes with estimated 10- to 20-minute electric air taxi flights that are ‘safe, sustainable, low noise, and cost-competitive with ground transportation’.

The Midnight aircraft are designed for back-to-back flights with ‘minimal charge time between flights’.

“With the support of its early investor and UAE’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala, Archer’s partner operators Falcon Aviation and Air Chateau, and GAL-AMMROC have announced plans to provide maintenance, repair and overhaul support for the eVTOL aircraft,” said a statement.

Abu Dhabi’s Proposed $1 Billion Esports Resort will Have a ‘Parachute Jump Check-In’

Abu Dhabi is set to become an esports empire, courtesy of a revolutionary new project: the world’s first private island dedicated entirely to competitive gaming. UAE-based esports company True Gamers announced plans to build a large-scale “esports island” in Abu Dhabi, promising to transform the city into the ultimate playground for pro gamers.

While the global esports and gaming industry has seen a slowdown post-pandemic, the Middle East has aggressively invested in esports innovation and infrastructure. Namely, the construction of dedicated esports facilities, major tournaments and investment in local development studios have helped to attract esports athletes and game developers to the region. Now, the UAE is gearing up to become the go-to destination for esports, attracting both regional and international talents by adding a state-of-the-art esports island to its impressive portfolio.

Vlad Belyanin , the co-founder of True Gamers, revealed that Abu Dhabi’s new and upcoming dedicated esports island will be located between the Al Bandar and Al Dana developments along Al Raha Beach. The company will be investing a whopping USD$280 million (or AUD$429 million ), which is expected to reach a total value of USD$1 billion (or AUD$1.5 billion ) upon completion. It is also currently in talks with “high-profile investors” to acquire the necessary funds needed to purchase the island and build all facilities that are needed for the project. While the island’s creators haven’t provided exact opening dates, they anticipate a return on investment within 10 years of opening.

“At True Gamers, our top priority is fostering a thriving eSports culture,” Vlad Belyanin, CPO and co-founder of True Gamers said in a statement . “We constantly seek innovative trends and opportunities to elevate the gaming experience for everyone—from casual players to professional athletes. We’re grateful to the participating teams for their invaluable insights. We believe eSports Island will be a groundbreaking achievement in the entertainment industry, offering guests the perfect blend of relaxation and exceptional competitive gaming.”

This futuristic island will be a haven for gamers, offering training facilities, competition and tournament venues, content creation spaces, hotels for accommodating esports and gaming personnel, and a thriving esports community. The proposed development will feature a comprehensive ecosystem designed to cater to professional and amateur gamers’ needs. Nestled within this development lies the GG Resort, a 200-room hotel that will offer luxurious accommodations, perfect for unwinding after intense virtual battles on their in-room, high-end gaming PCs.

Furthermore, eSports Insider reports that the GG Resort will also feature a unique “parachute jump check-in” inspired by popular FPS games like Call of Duty and PUBG . Just steps away, aspiring champions can hone their skills at the GG Bootcamp, a state-of-the-art training facility equipped with high-performance computers, dedicated relaxation areas, and advanced data analysis tools.

The adjacent TG Arena will act as the epicentre of esports activity, catering to both console and PC enthusiasts. The arena will host thrilling tournaments, informative conferences, and cutting-edge exhibitions as well as have a dedicated streaming area for content creators.

Likewise, to keep you fueled for victory, the island will also include balanced nutrition programs to ensure optimal health and performance for all participants so you can focus on what truly matters – dominating the competition. True Gamers’ CEO, Anton Vasilenko, confirmed extensive market research to validate the project’s viability.

In a statement on his Instagram page , Vasilenko explained, “True Gamers conducted a comprehensive market analysis of the MENA region’s eSports landscape and the global eSports industry’s growth trajectory before developing plans for the eSports island. This in-depth analysis gives us confidence that the proposed business model will be instrumental in bringing eSports Island to life.”
