Pretty much all of the major cruise lines worldwide run Australia/New Zealand cruises, including popular lines like Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity and luxury line Seabourn. P&O Cruises is the top choice amongst local Aussies. Many of the same lines stop in New Zealand, but only during the summer months --New Zealand tends to be much colder the rest of the year. There are also expedition lines like Lindblad and Coral Expeditions that make port stops in some of the smaller ports throughout New Zealand.

What are some things to do in Australia & New Zealand?

Australia is full of natural landmarks and world-class museums. Don't miss the beaches or snorkeling and diving the Great Barrier Reef; a stroll across the iconic Harbour Bridge in Sydney; and shopping and dining in Melbourne. New Zealand is decidedly more low-key and ideal for long strolls to take in the natural landscape, but visitors should also squeeze in an excursion to historic Christchurch.

What should I pack for a cruise to Australia & New Zealand?

You'll want to be sure to pack lightweight clothing including plenty of shorts, t-shirts and sundresses, particularly if you're traveling in the region's mid-summer months. You'll definitely want a swimsuit and plenty of sunscreen as well. For more: What to Take to Australia on a Cruise .

Angkor Wat – From Singapore

The Angkor Archaeological Park offers a rare glimpse into the scale, power and architectural ingenuity of the Khmer empire that flourished in this Cambodian jungle setting until the 15th century. The ruins of Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument, may be the park’s star attraction but the Hindu-Buddhist temples at nearby Angkor Thom are just as staggeringly beautiful. The hundreds of serenely smiling stone faces at its Bayon Temple are particularly memorable, especially considering that they were carved with hand tools about 900 years ago.

Discover the Natural Beauty of Australia & New Zealand

Sail Down Under on an over-the-top vacation that immerses you in cosmopolitan cities from Sydney to Auckland, natural wonders from the Great Barrier Reef to Milford Sound, and world-class beaches from Fiji to Vanuatu. This is a region of beautiful scenery, majestic fjords, fine wine, friendly people, and exotic wildlife.

And with its opposite seasons, it’s the perfect place for those from the Northern Hemisphere to escape the winter blues. From the iconic Sydney Opera House to the soaring green mountains of New Zealand—and every palm-fringed beach in between—this region offers newness, tradition, and sublime scenery.

Choose from a wide variety of itineraries, from two-night jaunts around Sydney to longer sailings around New Zealand, the Great Barrier Reef, and the South Pacific. Choose from two convenient home ports, Sydney and Auckland, both gorgeous coastal cities with endless sightseeing opportunities.

Australia & New Zealand Cruise Highlights

Natural beauty.

It’s the outdoors that makes this region truly exceptional—from the snowy peaks of New Zealand to the picture-perfect beauty of Tahiti. Dive the Great Barrier Reef on your cruise to see multi-colored fish and corals. Photograph the towering Mitre Peak as you glide through the otherworldly Milford, Dusky, and Doubtful Sounds in New Zealand. Discover a peninsula of pink granite mountains, eucalyptus forests, white beaches, and azure waters of Tasmania’s Freycinet National Park.

Culture & History

The Māori are the indigenous people of Aotearoa (New Zealand) and first arrived here in canoes from their ancestral homeland of Hawaiki over 1,000 years ago. Their traditions are still very much alive today. Tribal tattoos are an expression of commitment and respect, while skillful wood carvers create intricate works that pay respect to the past.

The flora and fauna found in this region is among the most diverse on earth. Koalas. Kiwi birds. Duck-billed platypus. Tasmanian devils. Kangaroos (Australia is home to more kangaroos than people). Ships Sailing in Australia, New Zealand & South Pacific

Culinary adventure.

Travelers may not always think of Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific as top culinary destinations, but this region has a lot to offer.

From velvety Chardonnays to vibrant shiraz and more, the area is rich with respected wineries and blessed with the perfect climate to grow grapes. A world of wonderful wineries is found in the countryside on many of your ports of call as well as a booming brewery scene in the cities. Cheers!

As a region that has strong currents connecting it to the rest of the world, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific have a wide range of seafood available year ‘round. In fact, rare Bluff oysters from New Zealand are among the world’s finest. Pair with a crisp sauvignon blanc for a taste of heaven

Sheep farming has become an iconic symbol of New Zealand itself. Lamb from here has an all-natural advantage. It’s free-range and naturally fed on verdant pasturelands, so it’s mild tasting and naturally lean and tender. It’s no wonder roast lamb is a Kiwi meat-lovers’ favorite.

All of these dreams can become reality on an Australia and New Zealand cruise. Enjoy other unexpected sights and thrills along the way. Then choose an itinerary, which could cover either nation individually or include both for maximum variety in your Australia and New Zealand cruise vacation.

The two nations are very different, yet both promise thrills, sightseeing and natural beauty to any cruise liner pulling into port. In Australia, experience underwater wonderlands when you dock at Cairns or spend the day exploring the chic city center of Sydney. Book in advance for a sought-after place on a circumnavigation Australia cruise, which circles around the whole island continent.

New Zealand cruises aren’t yet as popular as Australia cruises but they offer intoxicating mixtures of dramatic mountains and trendy, modern cities. Shore excursions could vary from trips to vineyards outside Auckland or swimming with dolphins near the Bay of Islands. Seek out itineraries that take you through Fiordland, where the cliffs, forests and waterfalls rival the fjords of Scandinavia. Circumnavigation cruises of New Zealand are also available with some operators.

Itineraries for both New Zealand and Australia cruises vary in length and number of ports. The shortest journeys are one-way and one-country, but to enjoy a round-trip or experience the beauty of both nations, plan for a longer Australia and New Zealand cruise vacation. October to April are the busiest months for Southern Hemisphere cruises, although Australia cruise lines operate throughout the year. The best time to cruise to New Zealand is during its summer months between December and February.

Fjords, Pharaohs or Koalas? Time to Plan for Your Next Eclipse.

If you can’t get enough of totality, or missed out this time, you’ll have three more chances in the next four years in destinations like Iceland, Spain, Egypt and Australia.

  • Share full article

A small, black disk surrounded by a bright, white halo suspended in a mostly dark sky over the still waters of a lake in which dim, golden light from the horizon is reflecting. There are dark hills and mountains beyond the lake.

By Danielle Dowling

Are you still a little giddy from the magical moments of totality during Monday’s solar eclipse? Or did clouds swoop in to block your view? Maybe you just couldn’t make it to the path of totality this time. No matter what, the question now is “ Where and when will it happen again?”

“People who have never seen it before, the first words out of their mouth after the totality ends is ‘I’ve got to see another one, this is incredible, this is unbelievable.’ That is when you become addicted to these things and end up traveling no matter where the next one is,” said Joseph Rao, an eclipse chaser and guest lecturer at the Hayden Planetarium.

So, if like Mr. Rao, you’ve developed a raging case of umbraphilia — the love of eclipses — you’ll have three chances over the next four years to see the moon blot out the sun. The first, on Aug. 12, 2026, will start above Greenland, then strafe the west coast of Iceland and move along the Atlantic Ocean and over Spain. Almost a year later, on Aug. 2, 2027, another will skirt the Mediterranean coast of North Africa then cross Egypt and part of the Arabian Peninsula. The third, on July 22, 2028, will cut across Australia and the southern tip of New Zealand.

Future Eclipses

Eclipse chasers will have several more chances this decade to view a total solar eclipse .

australia cruise to new zealand

Last week, as Victoria Sahami , the owner of Sirius Travel , was preparing to guide a group of tourists in Mazatlán, Mexico, for Monday’s big event, she was also planning for these other upcoming eclipses. Ms. Sahami joined the ranks of the eclipse-obsessed when she witnessed one in Venezuela in the 1990s. “Like many people, I was hooked. There was no going back,” she said.

Total solar eclipses happen fairly regularly — about every one to two years — in locations scattered around the world. “That’s the great thing about them: You wind up in places that you don’t normally go,” Ms. Sahami said.

A major spoiler is weather, which will be a big variable in the 2026 eclipse — one Greenland, Iceland and Spain will see.

“Iceland normally has a lot of cloud during that time of year,” said Paul Maley , who runs Ring of Fire Expeditions . “The data shows Spain to have the higher good-weather prospects of all three. However, the sun is low in the sky and the eclipse ends as the sun hits the horizon at sunset.”

Because of Iceland’s mercurial meteorology, Ring of Fire Expeditions is going all in on Spain, with a 10-day excursion on the mainland. Sirius Travel is offering not only a five-day trip to Majorca but also an eight-day tour around Iceland. It will be based in Reykjavik, and the itinerary will remain flexible on the day of the eclipse so the tour can easily pivot toward the location with the least cloud cover. Ms. Sahami recommends the trip for those who already have a few eclipses under their belt and would be happy just to take in the sights of Iceland if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The 2027 eclipse, on the other hand, promises to be truly stellar: Luxor, Egypt — the site of numerous ancient temples as well as the Valleys of the Kings and Queens — sits right in the middle of the path of totality and will be bathed in darkness for a full 6 minutes 23 seconds. Weather-wise, it is what Ms. Sahami called “a slam dunk.” “You know you’re going to see it. You know that you’re not going to get any clouds,” she said.

But for all its potential, those considering Egypt should be aware that the State Department has a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” warning for the country because of the risk of terrorism.

The 2028 eclipse will darken the skies over Sydney, Australia, for 3 minutes 49 seconds. It will be the first time the city has experienced a total solar eclipse since 1857. Ms. Sahami has her eyes on a trip based out of there, while Mr. Maley has chartered a cruise ship off the northwest coast of Australia. It will be winter there, he said, but that isn’t likely to mean bad eclipse-viewing weather.

If you want to see any (or all) of these eclipses, you should get started on planning and booking now, particularly if you want to sign up for a trip organized by a tour company. One of Sirius Travel’s excursions to Luxor is already full.

Scrutinize refund policies and look into insuring your trip. Several companies will fully refund your deposit if you cancel a year in advance. A lot can happen, Ms. Sahami said, “but if you think you’re going to go, why not?”
