Visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento

All you need to know to visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento

Visiting Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius from Sorrento

Many travellers to southern Italy use Sorrento as a base to visit the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. These two Roman cities were buried in ash during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AC, and are considered among the most important archaeological sites in the world . Both were preserved in a state of "suspended animation", as the cities were suddenly frozen in time by the catastrophic eruption rather than being gradually abandoned over the centures or transformed by subsequent conquests. Pompeii was completely buried in just 12 hours, and houses, temples, baths, brothels, restaurants, and citizens were preserved under the ashes until being unearthed in 1748.

Pompeii tours from Sorrento: if you are exploring the Italian coastline south of Naples, you should definitely make time to visit these unique and unforgettable spots...after all, when will you next get the opportunity to walk the perfectly preserved streets of a Roman city or stare into the steaming crater of an active volcano?

Skip-the-line tickets for Pompeii: Buy now 1. Receive your tickets via email or text. 2. Show your tickets from your smartphone. 3. Skip the line to enter the archaeological site.

How to Reach Pompeii from Sorrento

Getting to Pompeii from Sorrento, Italy is very simple: just take the Circumvesuviana train which runs from Sorrento to Naples, and in 20 minutes you'll arrive at Pompeii . The entrance to the archaeological site is right across from the Circumvesuviana station.

How to Reach Herculaneum from Sorrento

Getting to Herculaneum from Sorrento is just as simple: take the Circumvesuviana train which runs from Sorrento to Naples and get off at Ercolano (about 40 minutes from Sorrento). Once you exit the station, follow the main road downhill about 500 meters to the entrace to the archaeological site.

Pompeii or Herculaneum?

Pompeii is a much larger site than Herculaneum and more striking, while Herculaneum is better preserved as it was covered in a layer of protective mud and volcanic ash, sealing the remains completely and preserving even materials like wood. The down side of visiting Herculaneum is that many Roman homes and buildings are closed to visitors, so if you have time to visit just one site while in the area, opt for Pompeii. Trying to see both in one day may be overwhelming! Pompeii or Herculaneum?

How to Plan Your Visit to Pompeii

It can be tiring to visit the ruins in Pompeii: the site covers 33 square kilometers, you must walk along the ancient Roman streets made of large blocks of stone, and there is little or no shaade. There are public restrooms, a café, and a number of picnic areas inside the site that are marked on the map, and you can stop there to rest and even have a small picnic.

A bottle of water (that you can refill at one of the many water fountains inside the site);

A map of the site, available free at the entrance.

Tip: choose one of the suggested itineraries to follow so you don't get lost or, better still, visit with an expert guide.

To see the major monuments in Pompeii, you will need at least 8 hours, but it will be a tiring day. Opt instead to plan on about 4 hours, and touch on just the most important sights.

Visiting Pompeii with Children If you are travelling with young children, request the keys to the Baby Points located inside the site at the entrance. These are small "stations" where you can change and feed infants, and rest for a while. Touring the site with a pushchair or stroller is difficult, so opt for a baby backpack, if possible. You can leave your stroller in the luggage check at the entrance free of charge.

From Herculaneum to Mount Vesuvius :

Vesuvio Express Bus : departs from the Circumvesuviana train station at Herculaneum and arrives at the visitor arrival area on Vesuvius at 1,050 meters above sea level. From here, you will hike with a guide to the crater (about a 20 minute walk along an easy trail).

From here, passengers hike with a guide to the crater (about a 20 minute walk along an easy trail).

Departures every hour from 9 am to 3 pm

Visiting Mount Vesuvius : info and tips

Lunch in a Vineyard For a lunch break between the archaeological sites and Vesuvius' crater, we recommend a stop at the Cantina del Vesuvio winery, which produces local Lacryma Christi wine. They offer winery tours and a tasting lunch each day, featuring their own wines paired with local dishes. Free pick up in Pompei. La Cantina del Vesuvio

Capri Day Trips From Sorrento Reviews

1. capri island day trip with boat cruise from sorrento.

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Departure: Via Marina Grande, 92, 80067 Sorrento
  • Departure Time:  8:00 AM
  • Includes: Swim stops, goggles, drinks, snack, free time at Capri and Anacapri, English-speaking skipper

Do you ever feel like a lot of tours just fill your time with “checkmark” activities, where you’re just following around your guide and checking off the biggest points of interest? It’s not a personalized experience, nor do they give you ample time to really allow you to appreciate the area to its fullest.

However, with the Capri Island Day Trip with Boat Cruise from Sorrento Tour , it perfectly balances free time to appreciate the natural beauty along with sightseeing to give you a history of the area.

This amazing day out starts out in the morning, at the time that works best for you and your schedule. You’ll meet your guide at the Marina Grande Sorrento, who will provide you and your party with a briefing to ensure everyone’s comfortable and stays safe.

After, you’ll hop onboard for a breathtaking, relaxing cruise to the majestic island of Capri after passing Regina’s Giovanna Baths and the Villa Pollio!

As you approach the Isle of Capri, you’ll take in idyllic views of the Scugnizzo statue, the hidden wonders of Grotta del Corallo and Grotta Bianca, the dramatic Natural Arch, and more.

It really feels like you’re sailing through some kind of real-life postcard. As you cruise along, the skipper will be there to tell fascinating stories, historical accounts, anecdotes, and cultural and artistic relevance throughout time.

Of course, the cruise is really only part of this fantastic experience. When you dock, you have a good 4 hours or so to explore the heart of this gem, starting with the Piazza Umberto I or “Piazzetta”.

Explore Capri’s social life in all its glory, getting lost in the cobblestone streets, enjoy a tasty espresso at one of their cafes, or indulge in some prime people-watching.

Tour Information & Booking

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. private capri day trip from sorrento.

  • Duration: 6 to 8 hours
  • Departure:  Piazza Marinai d’Italia, 33, 80067 Sorrento
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM
  • Includes: Fuel, captain, goods and services tax, soft drinks

If it’s your first time in the area, you absolutely have to look into this all-day adventure. You’ll set sail for a journey that’s bound to leave you captivated and in awe of the natural beauty and history woven into every thread of Capri.

The Private Capri Day Trip Tour  is one of the best ways to experience this paradise, gliding over the azure waters with the wind in your hair and sun on your skin.

Your voyage starts at 10:00 am, where you’ll meet the captain for the day who will give you a briefing before the tour starts off. Keep in mind that this is a private tour, so that boat is smaller, but this is an intimate experience where you almost feel like a local!

This also means that you get to see areas of Capri that you wouldn’t be able to with a larger ship, which is perfect for those who are adventurers at heart.

Start off with a visit to the fabled “Bagni della Regina Giovanna” – a hidden gem tucked along the Sorrento Coast. Here, it seems like history and nature intertwine, with a small waterfall that helps create a perfectly serene environment.

If you’re looking for a kind of tranquility that the city can’t give you, this is a great little retreat to spend the day at.

You can choose to enter any of the following: The White Grotto, Green Grotto, and the Blue Grotto – however, it is at an extra cost (not much).

As you cruise around your guide will point out various points of interests and explain the history behind such sites like The Statue of Urchin, Jump of Tiberius, Coral Cave, and of course, the Natural Arch.

The Villa Malaparte was one of the most interesting to me, though between the architecture and natural sites, there really was never a dull moment.

3. Day Trip to Capri Island with Boat Ride From Sorrento

  • Duration: 9 hours
  • Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off available
  • Departure Time: 9:00 AM
  • Includes: Roundtrip transportation, assistant on board, boat Nerano – Capri – Nerano or Hydrofoil Sorrento – Capri – Sorrento, boat trip around island

Spend the day getting blown away by the enchantment of Capri island, which sits in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Starting off in the morning, this full-day affair includes roundtrip transportation so you don’t have to worry about a thing.

The Day Trip to Capri Island with Boat Ride from Sorrento Tour  even offers various itinerary options catered to you and the rest of your party’s preferences to make the most of your day!

I truly appreciated that the guide came right to our hotel to pick us up, so we literally just had to make sure we were ready in our hotel lobby at the agreed-upon time.

No having to worry about booking separate transportation or hoping you’re arriving at the correct meet-up point in a foreign country. After going through a briefing, you’ll hop on the sleek boat and head to the quaint coastal village of Nerano.

As you sit back and relax while sailing along the Punta Campanella Marine Reserve, you’ll enjoy the stunning vistas of Massa Lubrense and Ieranto’s Bay. This is a bit of foreshadowing to the unmatchable beauty that awaits you on the Isle of Capri.

Once you arrive, you’ll have the day to do as you wish – I recommend taking the guide’s advice based on your interests. You can choose to be lazy on the impeccable beaches, indulge in some retail therapy at the many boutiques, grab a coffee, or enjoy some local cuisine.

Oh, and just so you know, there will be an optional bus transfer between Capri and Anna Capri that’s absolutely worth it as you’ll avoid the lines.

The cruise around the island at the end of the day was one of my favorite moments, and great for capturing some Instagram-worthy snaps!

4. Capri “All Inclusive” Boat Tour + City Visit

  • Duration: 7 to 8 hours
  • Departure:  Porto di Sorrento, Via Marina Piccola, 35, 80067 Sorrento
  • Departure Time: 9:30 AM
  • Includes: Skipper, fuel charges, free bar all day, aperitif with appetizers and prosecco, brunch, fresh fruit, snorkeling gear, taxes and insurance

The Capri “All Inclusive Boat Tour + City Visit is one of those tours that you’ll likely remember for the rest of your life. I know that sounds a bit dramatic, but it truly is a tour that has more than everything you can think of, covered.

I’ve had many instances where I’ve taken tours only to be charged extra for transfers, entrance fees, food, etc., but that’s not at all the case here.

Rather, this tour makes you feel like some of your closest friends have welcomed you aboard their boat, featuring all kinds of delicious snacks, drinks, and tons of fun. Whether you’re looking for a bit of excitement or just want to relax, you’re in for a real treat.

The crew does a fantastic job at taking your preferences into consideration, and customizing the tour to fit your personality and interests along the way.

After being picked up from your hotel lobby, you’ll head to the port and get ready for tons of fun! I will say that I wasn’t expecting the free, full bar open all day long which was a bit dangerous for me as I do love a good prosecco.

Not only that, but they offer a freshly-made brunch on board so you can enjoy the local cuisine in one of the most gorgeous settings in the world.

You’ll essentially get to see and explore every corner of this beautiful location, with the crew members at the ready to regale you with fascinating stories of each spot.

You’ll also have time to stop for snorkeling, where they provide snorkeling equipment and plenty of tubes and inflatable water toys. All of that combined with the 4 hours of leisure time at the island was perfect, as we got to enjoy the local food, shopping, and natural beauty on our terms.

5. Full-Day Capri Island Cruise from Sorrento

  • Departure:  Parcheggio Comunale Achille Lauro, Via Correale, 80067 Sorrento
  • Departure Time: 9:45 AM
  • Includes: Professional English-speaking skipper, snacks, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, roundtrip transportation

Are you on the hunt for a full-day tour that your kids won’t get bored of? Are you looking for an experience that balances education with fun? If any of that sounds like you, look no further than the Full-Day Capri Island Cruise from Sorrento Tour .

Roundtrip transportation from Sorrento center makes this a very accessible tour to take, especially if you’re traveling with children. Right from the very beginning, our guide was very personable and fun, making sure all of us were entertained by what was going on.

This is actually one of the earliest tours as well, which means that we missed a large part of the crowds and got certain places to ourselves.

Once onboard, you’ll head out from the port of Piano di Sorrento to Capri while enjoying fun music, educational commentary, and plenty of snacks and beverages. They include both non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, so everyone has something they like.

Honestly though, don’t be surprised if they have many other thoughtful bonuses to offer as the customer service was top-notch here.

I will say that on Capri, there at times are quite a lot of tourists, so be prepared for a slight delay when you’re dealing with the shuttle service around the island.

Regardless, there’s plenty to do and the scenery that surrounds you at any given point in time is incredible. From the crew and attention to detail to the landscapes themselves, I truly couldn’t have asked for a better tour to Capri!

What to See and Do in Capri

Located in Italy’s Bay of Naples, Capri is known for its “thousand faces”, where you can walk the winding trails on the cliffsides above the Mediterranean sea. Its incredible stretch of coastline is covered in enormous, glitzy villas, making it a destination for celebrities and artists, alike. Made entirely of limestone, the island dates all the way back to the prehistoric age!

They say that Capri was first “discovered’ by Emperor Augustus, where he ended up living and building many temples, villas, and gardens to create his own version of paradise. However, archaeologists have found ample proof that the island was inhabited centuries before the Roman Empire even existed – all the way back to the Stone Age!

The earliest mythiacl residents were the Teleboi from Acarnania, and it’s said that Capri used to consist of two towns and later reduced to one. Tiberius also spent the last years of his life there, building 12 villas – the most famous of which being the Villa Jovis (you can still see the ruins today).

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Naples once again began ruling Capri. Due to this, there were many attacks on the island, and was eventually given to the commune of Amalfi. In 1806, French troops under Napoleon took control of the island, and just a few years later, was restored to Ferdinand I of the Two Sicilies. In the 19th century, it became a popular artist and celebrity destination, and has been that way ever since.

Sites to See

  • Giardini di Augusto/Gardens of Augustus
  • Piazzetta di Capri
  • Villa San Michele
  • Blue Grotto
  • Monte Solaro

What to See and Do in Sorrento

This charming little coastal town faces the Bay of Naples, sitting on dramatic cliffs to offer sweeping views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Due to its natural and man-made beauty, it’s become a very popular resort town with a small-town feel that will enamor anyone. Known for its juicy and flavorful Sorrentine lemons, high-quality ceramics, lace and marquetry, there’s plenty to do and see here.

Likely of Greek origin, Sorrento was once a Roman resort, becoming part of the Norma kingdom of Sicily in 1137. However, from the 8th century BC, there were already various indigenous villages all over the place. You can still see the oldest ruins of Oscan, which date back to around 600 BC!

Thanks to Sorrento’s naturally deep gorges, it was very well-protected from attacks. There are still many ruins in the villa quarter right ot the east of the actual town, though one of the largest sites is now where the Hotel Vitotria sits.

Located under the Hotel Sirena there are interesting finds like a rock-made tunnel, and by Capo di Sorrento there’s another villa called the “Bagni della Regina Giovanna”.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Sorrento was ruled by the Ostrogoths and later turned into an autonomous duchy in the 9th century. There were frequent confilcts between Amalfi, the Saracens, and Lombardic duchies.

The latter of which besieged Sorrento. In 1035 it was acquired by Guaimar IV of Salerno, and eventually was annexed to the Kingdom of Sicily. After much back-and-forth, it was officially annexed to the new Kingdom of Italy in 1861.

  • Villa Comunale di Sorrento
  • Chiostro di San Francesco
  • Bagni Regina Giovanna
  • Basilica Sant’Antonino
  • Museo Correale di Terranova
  • Cathedral of Saints Philip and James
  • Parco di Villa Fiorentino

After your historical visit, head to the Amalfi Coast to marvel at the cliff-perched, colorful villages. You’ll have time to stroll along the charming alleys of Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello, the prettiest towns on the coastline.

▶️ Fancy a wine tasting on the slopes of a volcano? This full-day Pompeii, Herculaneum, and wine experience on Mt. Vesuvius with an archaeologist takes you and your group on a memorable journey.

You’ll then head to a family-run winery located on the volcano’s slopes. You’ll have the chance to relish a scrumptious lunch and some wine tasting (own expense), before reaching your last stop of the day: Herculaneum.

Another victim of the Vesuvius eruption, Herculaneum is the first Vesuvian city discovered. It’s smaller than Pompeii, but even better preserved and it’s a fascinating site to explore.

Our reviews

We spotted this excursion on the Internet on Sorrento Tourist Office web site and it soon caught our attention! We decided to book it and we are glad having done it! The excursion was simply awesome we visited Capri and also the Blue Grotto that was amazing! The skipper was a friendly person and we spend a really pleasant day. Now we understand why they call Capri the pearl of the Mediterranean sea!

Robert Campbell

We booked two trips one to Capri by small boat and a second a drive along the Amalfi coast – Positano. Both days were very enjojable , small groups and local guides who were friendly and very informative. Barbara and John Johnstone from Scotland April 2019

Barbara Johnstone

Very friendly and caring people. Tours were explained thoroughly and with a sense of humor. This was one of the tours we decided to go on, the views were spectacular and the tour guide was very friendly and talked us through the views as we drove around the beautiful coastline towns of Positano, Amalfi and Ravello. The 9 seater bus that we were on was fully air-conditioned and very comfortable. The experience was so good and affordable that we decided to go on another tour to Capri. Cannot speak highly enough of the Sorrento tourist office, we will definitely be back for tours in the future, top class!

We booked this tour through the web site of Sorrentotouristoffice.com and it was totally worth it! We spend a great day cruising to Capri Island and swimming around the grottoes, the skipper was very informative and friendly; we really enjoyed all of the services they offered on board. The island was simply amazing and we are really thankful to the guys of the agency for having recommended this amazing trip! We totally recommend it!

Michael Hinks

Everything well organized, from the time we got the tickets, to arrival in Naples and departing for Capri: boat in very good and very welcoming and kind skipper. Capri is amazing and I advise everybody to visit it, particularly at this time of year, when it is not very busy (but beware of the Blue Grotto, which was closed due to the slightly choppy sea). The final touch was the limoncello tasting, offered by the skipper. Wonderful day, highly recommended!

We loved Roberto and his team! They are so kind and personal. We took a Capri tour and everything was as described to us. We enjoyed our guide and spent a lovely day in Capri.

We booked three excursions with Pino and Roberto. All three were excellent days out and went exactly to plan. Much better value than trying to plan days out ourselves with every trip starting and finishing at our hotel or very nearby. Our trips were to Capri. Walking tour of Naples and the Amalfi coast. I would not hesitate to book excursions with this company they explained everything clearly we left confident our days out would be a success and they were. If anyone is visiting Napoli then we would recommend the walking tour as this gives a taster of Napoli. Coaches minibuses and boats they use are all very good.

My mother and I stumbled upon the Sorrento Tourist Office while shopping in Sorrento. We wanted to see the coast while we were staying in Sorrento for our holiday. Upon entering we were greeted by Pico and Roberto. They were very helpful and friendly while helping us choose the right experience. We settled on a full day Amalfi Coast Tour by van (8 tourist total) with stops in Positano, Amalfi, and Ravello. The booking process was very easy and less expensive than other options we were looking into. Flavio, our guide and driver, picked us up in front of our flat, on time. The van was clean and spacious once everyone was accounted for. During our drive, Flavio provided us with lots of information about the area and pointed out many fun landmarks that we would have missed otherwise. We made quite a few little stops on our journey, mostly for beautiful photo ops. He was able to answer all of our questions and provide us with recommendations (like lunch, if it is not included in your tour). Flavio was very personable and funny. We cannot say enough great things about him, he was the perfect guide!! On the trip, we were given an hour in Positano, about 2 hours in Amalfi (we took the optional boat tour about 40 minutes, had lunch, AND had time to walk around) and an hour in Ravello. The Sorrento Tourist Office provided us with a wonderful memorable day, that we will remember for a lifetime! Pino and Roberto were so helpful in fact, that we went back to ask about a good transfer service to the Napoli train station, well it turns out they do that too! We happily booked our transfer with them, which was also less than other quotes we received. Highly recommend! If I find myself in Sorrento again I will seek them out! To find them in person, go to the clock tower in Sorrento and walk down the pedestrian shopping area towards the water, they will be a little more than half way down, look for the seahorse logo. 5-Star Reviews From Our Wonderful Foodie Guests

We arrived in Sorrento on Wednesday afternoon. We took the Sorrento Food Tour on Thursday, meeting the guide, Tamara, in the morning near the square. It was delightful! we walked all over the central part of the city, tasting and strolling, learning bits of history as we went. Tamara pointed out things that were not to be missed, so we had a great list of places which we could return to later. She also provided a list of restaurants for us to try a some point in our visit to Sorrento. I would highly recommend this as a way to get yourself acquainted with the lovely city of Sorrento.

My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic tour around Sorrento in the company of our very knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide, Tamara. She is obviously very well known and liked all around Sorrento and we felt a warm welcome at every place we visited. As some other reviewers have mentioned, make sure you come on this tour with a healthy appetite in order to fully enjoy all the great food and drink you will be offered. Highly recommended as a great introduction to the delicious food and drink of this charming town.

This year was my third time touring with Tamara. She is the heart and soul and wisdom of the tours. She is so friendly and meets you right on time. The food tour has such a variety of stops with lots of history as you walk. I really like meeting the other tour members and have kept in touch with many. This year we booked the Capri boat tour but it was raining so hard we were not able to go. Refund was timely. Next time. 3times in Sorrento and 3 exceptional tours with Tamara. Thanks.

What a fantastic experience we had exploring Sorrento with Sorrento Food Tours. Tamara is incredibly knowledgeable and so friendly. My companion and I went on two tours with her, the daytime food tour and the evening wine tour stroll. She also booked our Capri boat excursion which turned to out be a great day and fun crew. The daytime food tour was so much fun, we learned loads about the local delicacies and the food culture specific to the area. Included in this is a trip into a lemon grove which was breathtaking. Being wine enthusiasts and not too familiar with the local wine varietals the sunset wine stroll was an excellent introduction - what a selection of wines we got to try and again the food delicious. We explored other foodie shops where we returned for treats to take home. We would definitely book these again. Thank you!

We thoroughly enjoyed our walking food tour on our first night in Sorrento. T.amara led our group through an evening of pastries, sandwiches, limoncello and a delicious dinner followed by gelato. Very interesting tour through the streets and orange groves of Sorrento.
