One of our most popular trips going to Austria and Switzerland, this incredible duo also delivers a visit to the little Liechtenstein capital. The Alps take center stage on this journey, but you’ll also learn about life as a Carinthian nun when you join them for dinner in a former castle.

Best time for travel discover switzerland, austria & bavaria.
While just about any month is great to visit Switzerland, Austria, and Bavaria, there are a few prime times of the year for the Discover Switzerland, Austria & Bavaria tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.
Winter: This tour makes for a perfect winter adventure. You’ll encounter far fewer crowds, the crisp mountain air, and snow-covered peaks. Cozy up outside with a blanket and enjoy fondue as it was meant to be eaten!
Spring: Fairly mild weather and fewer crowds make spring a great time to visit these countries.
Summer: Summer is a beautiful time of year to experience the region’s natural beauty and outdoor activities, even as popular sites and attractions draw crowds. It can get quite hot in the summer, so keep in mind there are very few hotels with air conditioning in the region. If the heat bothers you, you may prefer visiting in the spring or fall.
Fall: Another wonderful time to visit is in fall. You may wish to choose a tour that aligns with Oktoberfest!

Enjoy 3 nights in Vienna, Austria’s capital city. Walk in the footsteps of the greatest composers and allow the soft melodies of classical music to lull you into a time gone by. See the city with a local guide, visiting popular sights by means of public transportation. You’ll also have a full day to yourself – giving you ample opportunities to explore the Hapsburg-era museums and grab a slice of famous Sachertorte. Hosted You’re accompanied by a Tour Manager part of the time, for some guided excursions. The rest of the time, you’re at leisure to explore the destination your own way.
- Innsbruck - Vienna
- Transfer to Vienna, the largest city in Austria. As the country’s capital, Vienna is home to age-old traditions and well-known heritage. It was the former center of the Habsburg Empire, as well as the home for historical figures such as Freud, Mozart, Beethoven, and Strauss.
- Start your morning on a city tour with a local guide. You’ll make your way through the city like the locals do – on public transportation – and stop to visit Vienna’s most popular sights. Visit the 12th-century St. Stephen's Cathedral, standing at nearly 450-feet tall and featuring an eye-catching mosaic roof. Enjoy time in the afternoon to explore on your own. Gather in the evening for a dinner and classical music concert, highlighting the works of Austrian-born Mozart and Strauss.
- The day is yours. With your free time, consider visiting the legendary Schönbrunn Palace, former residence of the Habsburgs and containing more than 1,000 rooms. Or maybe you’ll spend the day exploring the museum at Belvedere Palace, home to Gustav Klimt’s famous painting The Kiss. Or you could even grab a slice of Sachertorte in a Viennese café. No matter how you spend your day, soak in the Austrian culture and experience the best of this capital city.

Across the Alps by train: a feast of scenery from Switzerland to Austria
After starting in London, this itinerary takes in Lake Geneva, the Austrian Tirol, and the heights of the Zugspitze in Bavaria, with stunning views all the way
A brace of fine Swiss lakes, glorious mountain views and some of Europe’s most comfortable trains are all good reasons to head for the Alps. It’s a region where few trains require advance reservations, so you can really take advantage of the freedom to roam. Lake Geneva is a good first goal on a one-week trip. Take the 07.31 Eurostar from London St Pancras to Paris, then transfer from the Gare du Nord to the Gare de Lyon for the midday Lyria train to Lausanne . It’s a shade over seven hours from London to the shores of Lake Geneva, where a top accommodation choice is not in Lausanne itself but in the small village of Grandvaux, perfectly positioned above the Lavaux vineyards, with glorious views across the lake to the Alps beyond.
Philippe and Raymonde Delessert have brought a touch of real style to the Auberge de la Gare (doubles from £140 B&B) since they took over this fine auberge in 2008. It’s perfect for rail travellers – a stone’s throw from the station platform in Grandvaux and just 12 minutes from Lausanne on twice-hourly local trains. Relax on the terrace with a glass of the local chasselas white wine and dine on fresh perch from the lake.
Grandvaux is not a spot you’ll want to leave too quickly. Guests receive a travel card giving free transport on trains and buses for a day throughout the Unesco-listed Lavaux vineyards and the Montreux Riviera region , so make the most of that day. It’s a short hop on the train from Grandvaux to Chexbres village (22 minutes with a change at Puidoux), from where it’s a stunning two-hour walk down through gently graded vineyard tracks to Saint-Saphorin.
Make time for a light lunch at L’Auberge de L’Onde in Saint-Saphorin, before hopping on the train for the 20-minute ride to Veytaux-Chillon, by the 12th-century, lakeshore Château Chillon , made famous by Byron, whose poem The Prisoner of Chillon set the castle on the road to stardom. From the pier adjacent to the chateau, you can join the boat for the 90-minute cruise back to Lausanne .
Day three, and it’s time to take to the rails again, starting with a short ride along the lakeshore to Montreux (sit on the right for grand views of Lake Geneva). In Montreux, join the magnificent Golden Pass route which runs north-east via Gstaad and Interlaken to Lucerne. This is perhaps the finest six-hour journey in the Alps, with many rail connoisseurs rating the route as superior to even the celebrated Glacier Express. The beauty of this trip is in its tantalising mix of landscapes, ranging from neck-craning glimpses of snowy peaks to serene, green valleys and still lakes.
If you don’t mind a longer day, stop off for lunch in the stylish resort of Gstaad or for afternoon tea in Interlaken. Or even choose one of the (more expensive) departures from Montreux that has a belle époque restaurant car in tow. And for a deliciously eccentric one-hour stop, it’s hard to beat the station at Brünig-Hasliberg, which has a remarkable bric-a-brac emporium on the platform.
A good base for a two-night stay in Lucerne is the Hotel des Alpes (doubles from £171 B&B). For a perfect day out from Lucerne, take a trip on one of the historic paddle steamers that ply the lake (lakelucerne.ch). The round trip to Flüelen takes just under six hours, but it’s easy to extend the day by stopping off at the various villages around the lake. Rütli is a firm favourite for walks, views and a dose of Swiss history. It was in Rütli that the Swiss Confederation was founded.
It’s day five, and a chance for a border-hopping train trip to Mittenwald. It’s a six-hour journey with changes of train at Zurich and Innsbruck. The route takes in four countries: Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria and Germany, along the way traversing the famous Arlberg railway through the Austrian Tirol. The Arlberg line climbs through formidable Alpine scenery to more than 1,300 metres. The railway brought civilisation to this remote terrain. Early guidebooks recall how, before the railway, travellers perished on the Arlberg, their corpses left to rot by the side of the path with birds pecking at their eyes. Break your journey for a couple of hours at Innsbruck station (where there are good left-luggage facilities) to explore the Tirolean capital.
Picturesque Mittenwald oozes homely Bavarian charm and a thriving violin-making industry. The Hotel Rieger (doubles from £120 B&B, hotel-rieger.de) is a good place to relax for a day or two, and you may want to stretch your legs in the hills just west of the town where there are walks to suit all levels. If you want to venture higher, it’s an easy (though not cheap) excursion from Mittenwald to the Zugspitze summit – take the local train to Garmisch (25 minutes) where a rack railway climbs to the peak of Germany’s highest mountain. The Zugspitze railway defies gravity to whisk travellers through precipitous terrain, with remarkable views across a great swathe of the Bavarian Alps. From the summit, there is an equally remarkable view south across the Austrian Tirol.
From Mittenwald, it’s a longish day’s journey back to London, but it is possible to do it in as little as 12 hours, bringing to a close a seven-day journey covering seven countries with a feast of fine scenery along the way.
How to do it
Book one-way tickets from London to Lausanne from just £70 per person on Loco2 . For the other rail journeys in this itinerary, your best bet is the Interrail Global Pass valid for any three days within a month. Those valuable “pass days” should be used for journeys from Grandvaux to Lucerne, Lucerne to Mittenwald and Mittenwald to London. The beauty of the Interrail Pass is absolute flexibility. After the outward journey to Lausanne, the only train that must be prebooked is the Brussels to London Eurostar , where there’s a special passholder fare of £26.50. The pass itself is £189pp, with discounts for under-28s or over-60s (and it’s free for kids under 12). Even when you’re not using your pass for rail travel, you can buy half-price Interrail fares on the boat trips on Lake Geneva and Lake Lucerne.

Travel via the scenic routes from Germany to Austria and the highlights of Switzerland
This amazing train trip is covering popular attractions and landscapes of the most beautiful cities and areas of Germany, Austria and the Swiss Alps.
Germany and Austria impress with its magnificent palaces, churches and cathedrals. Its history is shaped by emperors and kings and still characterises these countries. In contrast, Switzerland has impressive mountains and an incomparable landscape.
Day 1 – Arrival in Munich
From parks and beer gardens to museums, historical sites and massive stores, there’s something for everyone who visits Munich. If you seek the finest beers, the most idyllic views, eco-parks, amazing cuisine, mind-blowing art collections or you just wish to sit in the midst of really great people, a trip to the Bavarian capital is all you need. Explore the city, stop at the Platzl for a beer.
Overnight in Munich

Day 2 – Day at leisure in Munich
Almost all of Munich’s major landmarks can be reached on foot from Marienplatz an ideal starting point for sightseeing around the city. You might just begin with witnessing the Glockenspiel (carillon housed in the Town Hall).
Built in the 15th century, the gothic “Cathedral of Our Lady” or Frauenkirche in German, was and is an unmistakable symbol of the city. But not everyone knows that the Frauenkirche serves as the final resting place of Emperors and Kings and that the Devil himself is said to have visited the church. The 500-year-old brick building is the seat of the Archbishop of Munich and Freising. Visitors can climb one of the cathedral’s two 100-meter towers for spectacular views over the city.
Travel back in time to the age of the Bavarian monarchy at Nymphenburg Palace : the extensive park with its pavilions, promenades along the palace canals, enormous fountains, magnificent flower gardens and, of course, impressive palace buildings is a source of fascination for Munich natives and tourists alike. In addition to the rooms inside the castle, which were designed by the best sculptors, painters and plasterers of the time, you can visit several museums housed in the palace itself, including the Museum of Man and Nature and the Museum of Nymphenburg Porcelain. Easily you could spend a whole day there.
German “Gemütlichkeit” and traditional beer drinking rituals are paramount at the Hofbräuhaus on the Platzl. The regional cuisine, music, folk dances, waiters in costume and historic atmosphere draw thousands of Munich natives and visitors from all over the world every day.
Day 3 – Munich-Salzburg
The train brings you in less than 2 hours to Salzburg, the next exciting destination.
Mirabell garden in Salzburg
The historic city center of Salzburg: a walk through the centuries The vibrant flair and special charm of Salzburg can best be experienced by taking a leisurely stroll through the historical downtown district. In fact, Salzburg’s “Old City” lends itself perfectly to exploration on foot. The river Salzach actually divides it into two halves: the right side, including the Linzergasse, Platzl and Steingasse, and the left side. It is this left side, the older section of the city, which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list, also incorporating the Kaiviertel district as well as Festungsberg and Moenchsberg mountains.
The surrounding hills shape the face of the Old City, adding to its already captivating charm. Enthroned on the Festungsberg, high above Salzburg, is the emblem of this city, Hohensalzburg Fortress, built in the year 1077. You can either make your way up there on foot, or simply take a comfortable ride on the funicular. The left bank of the Salzach is also world famous for the Getreidegasse, where you will discover the house where Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was born. The city owes much of its identity as a metropolis of music and the arts to this musical wunderkind.
Overnight in Salzburg
Day 4 – Day at leisure in Salzburg
You figured it out the day before, there is so much to see. Do not miss to visit the impressive cathedral, the Mozart birth house and the Dom Quartier. The Mirabell Gardens invite for a stroll.
Experience “The Sound of Music” in Salzburg Fans agree: Salzburg is THE “Sound of Music” city! Not only did the real Trapp family once lived here, this movie classic was also filmed in and around the city. Roam in the footsteps of Julie Andrews as she performed the role of Maria von Trapp!
There is a project for a “Sound of Music” museum in Salzburg. But until this museum opens its doors, there are countless other opportunities to immerse yourself in the movie. The “Sound of Salzburg Dinner Show” promises an entertaining evening: After a dinner accompanied by live music, guests are treated to a selection of the movie’s most famous hits. Do you love the scene where Maria and the children put on a puppet show with dancing marionettes? If so, be sure to visit a “Sound of Music” performance at the Marionette Theater in Salzburg!
Day 5 – Salzburg-St. Moritz
The train will bring you from Austria to Switzerland. Enjoy the ride through green valleys and mountain ranges.
St. Moritz hardly needs an introduction. This “capital of light” at an altitude of 1,815 m level hosted two Olympic winter games. It also has the world’s only bobsleigh run with natural ice. In summer, the area with the upper Engadin lakes and surrounding mountains is a paradise for hikers and landscape lovers.
Upon arrival at St. Moritz there is some time to explore the town. You will notice the many boutique shops with beautiful clothing, accessories and watches. We also recommend a stroll to the lake, so you will enjoy the high alpine air.
Overnight in St. Moritz
St. Moritz is located on the lake © Engadin St. Moritz Tourismus / Christof Sonderegger
Day 6 – Day at leisure in St. Moritz
Today you can enjoy the choice of several excursions in all directions. Whether you backtrack towards the Bernina Pass and ride the Diavolezza cable car for a view of the “Festival Hall of the Alps”, or the even higher Piz Corvatsch , these excursions are all included (only in summer). Our recommendation is to safe the ride up to the Muottas Muragl for the evening. Reserve your table in advance and enjoy dinner at sunset! Winter tourism – the result of a legendary bet In the autumn of 1864, the story goes, Johannes Badrutt sat by the fire in Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz with four English holiday guests. He enthused about the St. Moritz winter idyll – a snow-blanketed landscape basking in sunshine with mild temperatures during the day, “a paradise on earth.” The Englishmen did not believe him since they knew the dark, cold English winters all too well. This conversation led to the legendary bet: Badrutt suggested that the four should return in December, and if they did not enjoy their stay, he would reimburse the travel expenses. The Englishmen returned – and stayed until Easter. Badrutt won his bet and winter tourism was launched.
Day 7 – St. Moritz-Glacier Express-Zermatt
After the Swiss breakfast buffet (included with all overnights), you will experience the train trip in the world famous Glacier Express to Zermatt.
The Glacier Express on the Albula line heading for St. Moritz
From St. Moritz via Chur, the panoramic trip leads over 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels over the Swiss Alps to Zermatt and the Matterhorn. The Glacier Express winds its way through remote valleys, past sheer rock faces, idyllic mountain villages, over the Landwasser viaduct and through the Rhine gorge, the Grand Canyon of Switzerland. It scales the highest point of its journey at the Oberalp Pass with ease at 2,033 metres. Thanks to the large panoramic windows, a clear view of numerous summits, deep gorges and the UNESCO World Heritage sites “Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch” and “Rhaetian Railway in the Albula/Bernina landscapes” is guaranteed. The menus are prepared freshly in the on-board kitchen and served to you at your seat.
Zermatt is a car free village. All transport within the village is done by electric cars or sometimes even horse carriages. Zermatt is famous because of the Matterhorn, which was climbed for the first time in 1865. The first climb, however, was overshadowed by the tragedy on the descent when 4 of the 7 climbers died because one of them slipped. The Matterhorn museum shows the broken rope…
Enjoy the evening in the cosy town and a great choice of fine restaurants of all kinds.
Overnight in Zermatt
Day 8 – Excursion Gornergrat
The cogwheel railway takes you to the Gornergrat (3,089 m). This magnificent viewpoint, not only has one of the best views of the Matterhorn, but also shows you the greatest collection of the highest glacier covered peaks of Switzerland.
The Matterhorn reflects in the Riffelsee near the Gornergrat
If the weather is good, a short hike to the Lake Riffel is recommended. The Matterhorn mirrors in this lake and it makes a perfect photo and selfie spot.
Day 9 – Zermatt-Interlaken
It is well worth to set your alarm about 30 minutes before sunrise and see the Matterhorn illuminated in all kinds of orange light. The light changes practically every minute!
Now it is time to say farewell to the Matterhorn. Via the 34 km long newly built Loetschberg base tunnel you will reach Interlaken in the heart of the Bernese Oberland. After check-in at your hotel, you can explore Interlaken with its famous “Hoeheweg” (promenade) facing the Jungfrau mountain. Another possibility is a ride with the Harder funicular to the viewpoint above Interlaken. You can get a good overview of Interlaken and see why it is called this way. Interlaken is Latin for „between the lakes“.
Overnight in Interlaken
Day 10 – Excursion Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe
Today’s full day excursion takes you up to a unique, high alpine glacier world. You will reach Europe’s highest altitude railway station (3,454 m) aboard the legendary Jungfrau Railway. This mountain railway was built back in the late 19th century and opened on August 1, 1912. Originally the engineers planned to reach the summit of the Jungfrau (4,158 m), however in 1912 the financials did not permit to go on with the construction and consequently World War I put an end to the project. Now the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is the highest railway station and the highlight of every tour through Switzerland.
Jungfraujoch, the Sphinx observatory
On December 5, 2020 the new Eiger Express opened and permits breathtaking views to the Eiger North Face. This very steep wall is one of the most difficult climbs in the Alps. It was the greatest climbing challenge in the 1930’s. Numerous stories about these climbs and fatal accidents can be told.
At the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe you can see the longest glacier of the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier, 22 km long! For instance, you can hike over the glacier to the nearby Moenchsjoch hut. Don’t miss the view from the Sphinx terrace, which can be reached by one of the fastest elevators in Switzerland. Subsequently, you can pay a visit to the Ice Palace and go inside the glacier and see the sculptures, in order to complete your visit.
Day 11 – Interlaken-Lucerne
The Luzern Interlaken Express, the red train which is part of the GoldenPass Line, brings you to your next destination.
Enjoy the trip in the fully air conditioned panoramic train. A restaurant car is located in the middle of the train for hot and cold meals, beverages and snacks. 5 lakes „pass by“ on your train trip to Interlaken. Especially the first one, Lake Brienz, is extremely beautiful.
Upon arrival at Lucerne there is some time to explore the beautiful city. Of course, you can visit the historic district with the famous Chapel Bridge. Also, the narrow streets are worthwhile a stroll and the Lion Monument is close by. Next to the Lion Monument the Glacier Garden can be visited. Lucerne was covered by a glacier 10,000 years ago and the traces are still visible. The city is beautifully located on the Lake Lucerne and therefore a boat cruise in the afternoon is also highly recommended. In summer there are evening cruises so you can enjoy the sunset.
Overnight in Lucerne
Day 12 – Day at leisure in Lucerne
You have many options to spend this day in the Lucerne area. Here are some suggestions: Mt. Pilatus round trip: A perfect excursion which includes boat, mountain cogwheel railway, cable car, gondola and bus. The highlight is the traverse of Mt. Pilatus. From the summit the panorama of alpine mountains and lakes will impress you. Mt. Titlis or Mt. Stanserhorn : These destinations are easily reached by train. Both have their own special attractions. Mt. Rigi , the queen of the Alps: Like Mt. Pilatus, this is also a round trip that includes different modes of transportation.
So many choices … But they are all well worth a visit.
Day 13 – Individual Departure
It is time to say goodbye after you have experienced Austria and the Swiss Alps. You will take home a bucket full of memories.
You can end the tour at any Swiss airport or border station.

Your eyes gazing effortlessly on the beautiful Swiss Alp peaks, the sparkling lakes, lush flowered meadows, historic castles, the iconic profile of the Matterhorn, deep-cut glacial valleys, vineyards, gushing white water streams, magic mountains flanked by enormous glaciers. Mountaintop Excursions
You will also get to ascend the Gornergrat above Zermatt to arrive at an alpine panorama, where you are surrounded by more 4,000-meter peaks than anywhere else in the Alps. Then you will get to ride through a tunnel in the Eiger to arrive at the Jungfraujoch, the highest railway station in Europe.
All in First-Class Comfort
Enjoy the Swiss Alps in the comfort of your first-class rail car, and in the company of Swiss rail experts. You'll discover the scenery, history, and engineering that have made Switzerland's rail system the finest and most popular in the world. We do our best to book 1st class seat reservations but please note that at times due to availabilty it is possible to ride in 2nd class.
