Best Barcelona Food Tour Reviews

1. barcelona food & wine small group tour with a sommelier.

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure: Rda. de Sant Pau, 1, Eixample, 08015 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: 1:00 & 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  Lunch, Alcoholic Beverages, Small-group tours of up to 6 people, Professional sommelier to guide you on a culinary journey of food and wine.

I took this tour my first time in Barcelona, and what a treat it was for me! I’ve taken countless tours in cities all around the world, and this is definitely one of those sensory adventures that really made me fall in love with the city.

The Barcelona Food & Wine Small Group Tour with a Sommelier  was some of the most fun I’ve had, with a knowledgeable and friendly guide to lead us through some of the best wine and tapas eateries around.

I love the fact that this is a very small group tour setting, allowing for a maximum of just 6 participants for a personalized experience.

My party only consisted of me and one other, but the 4 other participants in our group were so much fun and it was a great opportunity for us to chat and get to know other travelers from around the world.

Upon meeting our guide, we set right off to El Poble Sec, which is a bustling arts area with steep, sloping streets filled with good food.

While there, we learned about how this area once didn’t have any water at all, hence the name “dry town” in Spanish. Here, we tried a wide variety of pintxos, which is a culinary tradition that hails from the North of the country.

Expand To See More See Less

The Spanish champagne that we paired with it, along with the Cava, created a wonderful vibe that I’d love to repeat. We then got to visit the Mercat de Sant Antoni, which is actually a revitalization but dates back to the Roman start of the city.

Sant Antoni is another one of my favorite areas of Barcelona, known for having a hip and busy food scene and offering some of the best wines around.

As our guide is a certified sommelier, we got an in-depth experience learning about each type of wine as well as the different grapes found in the area.

I had no idea right around Barcelona there were so many legendary vineyards, and I highly recommend the tour to anyone who’s curious about vino Español!

100% refund for cancellations within 24 hours of tour experience, 2. barcelona walking food tour with secret food tours.

  • Departure: Pl. de Ramon Berenguer el Gran, Ciutat Vella, Barcelona
  • Departure Time: 10:30, 11:30 AM & 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  Catalonian pastry, Spanish cheeses, tapas, paëlla, “secret dish”, and more

We all know that if you’re in Barcelona, one of the top food dishes you have to try are the tapas. However, like Paris with its croissants or Italy with its pasta, there are plenty of “tourist” tapas places and authentic eateries that locals love.

With the Barcelona Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours , you’ll get to try the latter, with a professional guide there to guide you and take you through all kinds of mouthwatering plates (including the Secret Dish!).

Our tour started out at the Plaça de Ramon Berenguer el Gran, which was pretty easy to access from the Urqu Inaona L1 subway stop and easy to find.

I spotted our guide right away next to the big horse statue, and they were super friendly and welcoming which made the tour that much more fun.

Our first stop was at a little old bakery right next to the cathedral, and given the scent of fresh bread wafting through the air, I’d already been wanting to try it!

The Caterina Market was up next located in Boqueria, where we were able to try absolutely delicious different types of ham and sausages while learning the history behind each type!

I had no idea that was even a thing – I mean, I thought that ham and sausage were just ham and sausage.  After that, we took a stroll through the fascinating Gothic Quarter, with its cobblestone streets and ancient architecture that feels like you’re walking through a fairytale.

The different types of tapas tried here were amazing, seamlessly combing and complementing different flavors and textures to create an experience unlike any other! Actually, this tour was the one that made me appreciate tapas in a way I hadn’t before!

The tapas place we went to was definitely very “local” and our guide only enhanced our visit with interesting stories behind the establishment!

Of course, our tour wouldn’t be the same without enjoying some filling, tasty sangria washed down with a glass of tangy sangria and catalan Crema!

I have a huge sweet tooth and the Catalan Crema immediately became one of my go-to desserts with its creamy texture and delicate flavors. Just the vibes of the lively eateries alone made it worth it, but overall this was just a wonderful evening.

This indeed is a secret food walking tour, with facts and stops that you’ll definitely never see on your own!

3. The Award-Winning Barcelona Private Food Tour: 6 or 10 Tastings

  • Departure: La Rambla, 82, 82, Ciutat Vella, 08002 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: Between 12:00 PM & 6:00 PM
  • Includes:  Private personalized tour local foodie guide, 6 or 10 food & drinks tastings – depends on option booked, vegetarian alternatives available, carbon neutral tour

Have you ever wished that you had a local friend who knew all the best foodie places to take you on your trip abroad? Well, we can come pretty close on the Award-Winning Barcelona Private Food Tour: 6 or 10 Tastings excursion!

It’s one of the most flexible I’ve experienced, offering shorter and longer tours as well as a morning and afternoon start time option.

One thing I absolutely loved about this tour is that it’s a genuine private tour – many private tours market themselves as such but still include others.

However, with this tour you truly are just you and your guide (as well as anyone else you bring along). There are a couple of different meeting point options as well, which further facilitated the whole start to the experience.

We really started things off on the right foot with our first stop being a charming local bar where we got to try some churros with chocolate and vermut/vermouth, which is apparently quite trendy at the moment.

We then followed it up by trying pintxos, learning about how they all started in a little bar in San Sebastian nearly 100 years ago as well as the difference between them and tapas.

I loved trying the turron and enseimada sandwiches, followed by savory hams at Mercat de Santa Caterina!

We stopped to see some cool sights like the old hospital de la Santa Creu as well as the intimidating Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi, which was apparently all started by a 5th-century fisherman!

I loved the sightseeing and walking around, as it helped me digest some of the delicious plates before trying traditional croquettes washed down with plenty of national wine at the Barra de Ferro.

With a knowledgeable and fun guide who went out of their way to make sure we had a fantastic time, I’d recommend this tour to anyone.

I’ve been to Barcelona many times, and it can be a bit intimidating to navigate the city’s bustling streets can be a bit challenging. This can make it difficult to find the best places to try traditional dishes here, especially during peak tourist seasons!

The  Tastes and Traditions: Barcelona Food Tour with Market Visit  showed me just how warm and hospitable Barcelona can be, from the people and traditions, to the food, itself.

We met up with our guide in the middle of the city in the morning, which was perfect timing as I hadn’t had breakfast yet and it seemed like we avoided most of the crowds at this time.

After a quick briefing, we kicked things off the best way possible with a little deep-fried xuixo pastry filled with crema catalana and coffee before making our way to a family-run deli that changed my life!

The deli ran by a pair of siblings is quite hidden with essentially no tourists in sight, and I made sure to put it on my list so I come back again next time!

After that, we cruised around by foot to take in plenty of local sites while our guide regaled us with fascinating historical tales, making the centuries past come to life.

We then arrived at the legendary Santa Caterina Market, which is very similar to La Boquería but more “local”, if that makes sense.

We tried plenty of cured meats and cheeses to fuel up for our tripdown the medieval Born area, where we got to try plenty of local vendors (including one shop that’s been in business over 150 years!).

After this, we arrived in Barceloneta, which is located right on the sea, trying locals-style lunch while learning about its origins as a quaint little fishing village!

At a corner bodega, our guide took us for a little shot of vermouth before we went to one of Barcelona’s oldest restaurants to fill up on none other than paella!

This tour truly gave me invaluable experiences and provided me with a deeper understanding of Catalan culinary traditions and the city’s history.

5. Sip, Sites & Bites Barcelona Food, Drinks & History Tour

  • Departure: Pg. d’Isabel II, 14, Ciutat Vella, 08003 Barcelona
  • Departure Time: 5:00 PM
  • Includes:  4 to 5 Beverages, Cava, Sparkling Wine, Clara, Vermut & more Wine, 10 to 11 Food tastings: Patatas bravas, Pa amb tomàquet, Manchego Cheese, Iberic Ham, and much more, alcoholic beverages

This next tour is the perfect budget-friendly option for solo travelers, couples, and groups of friends! The Sip, Sites & Bites Barcelona Food, Drinks & History Tour is an excellent choice to make if you have the evening free or are looking for a great alternative to a nice dinner out.

Starting at 5:00 pm, you and your group members will embark on a fun and tasty food tour through some of Barcelona’s most popular neighborhoods.

Limited to just 8 participants, each group feels more like a friend outing rather than a tour with strangers. The guide really set a lighthearted tone, making sure everyone was included, answering any questions we had and telling fun stories.

I love the way our guide seamlessly integrated historical sites with culinary gems spanning the iconic Gothic Quarter to the bustling La Rambla.

Our first stop was actually at the lovely seaside La Barceloneta, where we took in the views and enjoyed a charming visit to a family-owned Catalan bar where we tried 2 tasty traditional dishes!

I sipped on some of the best cava of my life, which was perfectly-paired with our dishes, letting the baked notes of apple and almond really shine through.

We then headed to the medieval Born neighborhood, where we headed into a 14th-century wine cellar where we then tried some clara along with traditional tapas.

No food tour of Barcelona is complete without visiting the Gothic Quarter, and it’s here where I got to take in breathtaking architecture and plenty of delicious food and drink.

Our guide did a fantastic job at bringing to life important historic accounts and incorporating them into food. Even if this tour cost 4 times as much, I would without a doubt take it again.

Eat Like a Local IN BARCELONA

  • Eating instant paella on the overly-touristy Ramblas and drinking a pitcher of sangria (please don’t do this!)
  • Being overcharged for greasy, reheated tapas
  • Leaving Barcelona not really knowing whether you tried the local food (or took enough Instagram selfies)

THIS is the experience for you because you will meet the owners of the small businesses that we support and try their original dishes.

12 Best Barcelona Food Tours

Never mind the museums and churches, the best Barcelona food tours are reason alone to travel to Spain’s coastal city.

Barcelonian cuisine is inspired by Catalonia and other Spanish regions. Restaurants and markets reflect the season but you can rest assured that seafood, cured meats, and cheeses are available year-round in the city.

Most Barcelona food tours focus on tapas and pintxos (appetizers served on bread) while wine is usually included in the package. This post has the inside scoop on the top-rated tapas and wine tours in Barcelona.

Best Barcelona Food Tours

As Barcelonian and Catalan food revolves heavily around meat, fish, and cheese, the majority of the tours are unsuitable for vegans. However, most operators are able to accommodate vegetarians provided you make a dietary note at the time of booking.

This guide will match you with the best food tour in Barcelona according to your tastes, budget, and travel itinerary.

By choosing the evening tour, you also have the option to tap on a flamenco performance. This requires advance booking although you’ll pay the venue for the show. Upgrading makes this one of the best Barcelona food tours for an all-around cultural experience.

The route covers El Born, Barceloneta Port, and Ciutadella Park. Stops are designed to show you the sights in between ducking into four different tavern bars and wine cellars. Main roads are avoided as much as possible and you’ll steer clear of congested streets.

Getting around on an e-bike means you cover far more ground compared to a walking tour. Therefore, it’s a clever way to maximize your Barcelona itinerary and see a bit of the coastline. Before you set off, your guide will explain how to use the bikes while helmets are provided for safety.

Price: from $70 per person

As you nibble at these, you’ll watch the chef cook a paella in front of you, using fresh seafood and seasonal veggies from the market. The grand finale is to divvy up the rice and dive in – while dipping sangria that you’ll have made yourself.

Although this is more of a demonstration than a traditional cooking class, the chef will call upon group members to assist at certain points. You do have a sangria mixing class though plus you’ll receive the recipes for all items made during the tour.

What Free Walking Tour to Take in Barcelona, Spain

O ne of the best ways to quickly get to know a city you are visiting for several days is to take a free walking tour when you first arrive. Especially across Europe, there are a handful of companies that provide free walking tours in different cities.

These free tours provide a more interactive and historical approach to a city than you would normally get just walking around with a printed travel guide.

Barcelona, Spain has an endless list of places and museums to visit and photograph. To get a better overview of the city we joined the free walking tours with Generation Tours .

➳ Find all:   Hotels in Barcelona

The Best Free Walking Tours in Barcelona:

What you will visit in the free tour of barcelona:.

The first walking tour we took is the free walking tour of Barcelona . Our tour guide was named Alvi, an amazing history and food enthusiast. The tour starts at 10:30AM or 3:00PM daily, on the steps of the Gothic Cathedral on Pla de la Seu.

Plaça Sant Felipe Neri

The Saint Felipe Neri Plaza is a small and quiet square near the Gothic Cathedral. The square boast a church, hotel, beautiful fountain in the middle.

This plaza has important history from the Spanish civil war. During a bombing of the city, a bomb fell in the square and did not immediately explode. The church also runs a school, so after the bomb fell, everyone tried running to a nearby bunker. As the schoolchildren were running by, the bomb exploded, killing two adults and 40 kids

The plaza is also featured in Woody Allen’s film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Mount Taber is the home to the first Roman settlement in the city. The term mount is used loosely, as it is only 16.9 meters above sea level. Don’t get too tired on the hike up.

At the summit you can see some 2000 year old Columns of the Temple of Augustus Barcelona, in a very small courtyard.

Baixada de Santa Eulalia

Saint Eulalia is the co-patron saint of Barcelona, who according to the story, at age 13 was tortured and killed for being catholic.

Legend has it that this street is where Saint Eulalia was rolled down a hill in a wine barrel full of glass and nails. When she was taken out of the barrel at the bottom alive, it was decided to finally kill her.

With an interesting history, it is now just a street with a hill.

Plaça del Rei

The King’s Plaza is primarily surrounded by the Grand Royal Palace. Home to the Kings of Aragon, which features one giant room the size of the palace, used for state presentations.

It is remembered as the center of the Spanish Inquisition, where public killings would take place.

Plaça de Sant Jaume

Town Hall of Barcelona, Spain

St James Square is the center of old city Barcelona. It served as a Roman forum 2000 years ago, and to this day serves as the center of laws for the region, with the Palace of the Generalitat of Catalonia and the City Hall on either side.

Castellers (Human castle)

Monument to the Castellers

Human castles are the most well known Catalan sport. Groups work together to build the tallest human tower. The small child on the top of the tower needs to show four fingers, for four red stripes on the Catalan flag.

The main Castellers event takes place on September 24th, with teams from around the region competing to have the tallest and best built tower.

To Catalonia, this sport represents themselves. It stands for solidarity of the region. There are many people holding up the few on top, along with the youngest member of the group on top.

Carrer Avinyó

The Carrer Avinyó is one of the oldest streets in the center of Barcelona. During the 19th century it was the center of the Bohemian lifestyle within the city. It is now home to many boutiques and great cafes and restaurants.

Pablo Picasso’s father taught at the School of Fine Arts that used to be open there. The arts school building now sits unused, until there is money for the city to pay for renovations. This street is where Picasso was truly influenced.

Carrer de la Mercè

Carrer de la Mercè  3 was home to the  Picasso family from 1896 to 1904. The street used to be highlight of bar and tapas in the city, but has declined in recent years.

Nearby is La Tasca del Corral, known for its custom vermouth. We were told to ask for the  Alvi special (The name of our tour guide), he didn’t say what it was though.

What you will see in the Free Gaudi and Modernism Tour:

The second free walking tour we took was about the influence of Gaudi and the modernism movement on the city of Barcelona. The tour also starts at the steps of the Gothic Cathedral at 2:30PM daily.

To read more about Antoni Gaudi, check out our  8 must see Gaudi buildings in Barcelona post.

4cats Restaurant

4cats Restaurant has operated in one way or another since 1897. It became the meeting place for the artists at the center of modernism. The building itself also exemplifies modernist architecture.

On modernist buildings the underside of the balconies are covered in tiles. The more colorful the tiles are, the richer the owner was. Also, the building always had dragons incorporated somewhere.

Palau de la Música Catalana

The Catalan Music Palace was built as a landmark in the cultural and social life of Catalonia finished in 1908. The stained glass ceiling entirely illuminates the entire theatre by daylight. Therefor shows had traditionally taken place in the afternoon.

The building is covered in many mosaics inside and out.

Our tour guide said that the narrow streets around the music hall are home to many good food joints.

Passeig de Gracia

Passeig de Gracia is described as the Champs de Lycee of Barcelona. It is now home to many global upscale business and expensive properties. The Art Nouveau style benches that line the street were originally heated with coal in the winters, like an oven.

Along the street there is a block with three houses in a row by different famous modernist architects.

  • Casa Lleó-Morera by Lluís Domènech i Montaner
  • Casa Mulleras by Enric Sagnier
  • Casa Amatller by Josep Puig i Cadafalch
  • Casa Batlló by Antoni Gaudí

Casa de les Punxes

This large Gothic castle is a beautiful building on the outside. It is a private non-profit building, so you must enjoy this one from the outside!

La Sagrada Familia

The last stop on the walking tour was at Gaudi’s most famous work, La Sagrada Familia church . For our complete review of this architectural masterpiece, check out our Gaudi guide .

Backpacker Night Out

For evening fun, Generation Tours also hosts a Generations Night Out pubcrawl. The night began at GaelicBCN, a small bar, with one tapas and beer or sangria.

The event cost €15/person, but if you pre-order the tickets at the end of the walking tour, you get an additional drink and tapas.

We then took the metro to a small bar near the water. It was a quieter bar, to talk to the others in the group for an hour or so. You get a free shot in the way in and out.

We walked to a more happening bar, where we made a quick stop for another free shot.

Our night, we ended at the  Shoko Barcelona nightclub. The one downside of this club from our experience is the bathroom. Even by 1am, relatively early for nightlife in Spain, the bathroom was not a pretty sight.

Regular entry to Shoko is €12 for 1 drink, €18 for 2, and €24 for 3. So, if you would like to end your night at the club, going on this pubcrawl is totally worth it.

Other than that, I would suggest this pubcrawl if you are looking for an adventure out at night, but do not have any friends in Barcelona to do it with. If you have your own group, go out on your own, set your own pace and have fun!

‘Hidden in plain sight’: the European city tours of slavery and colonialism

From Puerta del Sol plaza in Madrid to the Tuileries Garden in Paris, guides reshape stories continent tells about itself

D odging between throngs of tourists and workers on their lunch breaks in Madrid’s Puerta del Sol plaza, we stop in front of the nearly 3-tonne statue depicting King Carlos III on a horse. Playfully nicknamed Madrid’s best mayor, Carlos III is credited with modernising the city’s lighting, sewage systems and rubbish removal.

Statue of a man on a horse on top of a plinth surrounded by multi-storey buildings

Kwame Ondo, the tour guide behind AfroIbérica Tours, offers up another, albeit lesser-known tidbit about the monarch. “He was one of the biggest slave owners of his time,” says Ondo, citing the 1,500 enslaved people he kept on the Iberian peninsula and the 18,500 others held in Spain’s colonies in the Americas. As aristocratic families sought to keep up with the monarch, the proportion of enslaved people in Madrid swelled to an estimated 4% of the population in the 1780s.

It is a nod to the kind of conversation – one often neglected or wilfully ignored across the continent – that Ondo and his counterparts in Europe are steadily wedging into everyday life. From Barcelona to Brussels, London to Lisbon, a cohort of guides has trained its lens on Black and African history, laying bare how the continent has been shaped by colonialism and slavery as they reshape the stories that Europe tells about itself. While California debates reparation bills aimed at compensating for generations of discriminatory policies, and the UK takes down tributes to slave traders and colonialists, similar conversations have been conspicuously absent across much of the continent.

“We’re not lifting up anyone’s mattresses,” says Ondo. “This is history hidden in plain sight.”

It is a statement that in some ways mirrors his own life. Born in Equatorial Guinea – the last Spanish colony to claim independence , in 1968 – he grew up in southern Spain, steeped in the culture of a former empire that had long ceased to remember its actions in what has been dubbed the “forgotten colony” of Spain.

Ondo and his family’s existence in Spain, however, acted as a powerful counter to this forgetting. “It was a conscious decision by European powers to disconnect themselves from the history,” says Ondo. “But history comes back to you.”

Eleven hundred miles away, the sentiment is echoed by Jennifer Tosch, who launched Black Heritage Tours in Amsterdam in 2013. The previous year, Tosch had arrived in the country as an international student from the US with a singular Dutch connection; with family roots that trace back to Suriname, she had family who had been living in the Netherlands for four generations.

Jennifer Tosch

Her attempts to explore this connection were futile – the result of what she describes as “wilful forgetting” or “colonial amnesia” – and convinced her of the need to bring the city’s hidden histories to the masses.

“Imagine me sitting here in courses, being told that your history wasn’t included, that you didn’t matter,” she says. “That there was nothing here for you to see that would bring you closer to an understanding about your past. It just didn’t sit right.”

As she geared up to tour visitors and locals past the gable stones that include the image of a servile, Black child and the dark-skinned figureheads with exaggerated features once used to signal pharmacies, the idea was initially met with scepticism by Dutch people of colour.

“Like: ‘No, no, there was no Black history here; no, there was no Black presence until much later’,” she says. “So questioning the notions of belonging and citizenship and identity were interwoven with my mission to prove that we belong here. And that our stories matter.”

Eleven years on, the conversation around Black history and colonialism in the Netherlands has shifted. In 2023, King Willem-Alexander apologised for his country’s role in slavery but stopped short of heeding demands for reparations, despite research suggesting his ancestors had earned the modern-day equivalent of €545m (£466m) from slavery.

The apology was a “pretty watershed moment”, says Tosch, albeit one that was carefully timed to dovetail with the growing attention being paid to this history. In other words, it was more a credit to the crucial work many had been doing to uncover the history than any royal initiative, she says.

Kwame Ondo speaks with a group of a dozen people outside a building

In Berlin, this kind of shift feels a long way off, says Justice Mvemba, who founded Decolonial Tours in 2022.

The locals who take her tours are often surprised to find out that Germany’s colonial empire once ranked as the third largest in Europe. “They’ve never learned anything about Germany’s colonial past, some don’t even know that the Berlin conference happened in Berlin,” she says, citing the 1884-85 gathering in which European imperial powers wrangled for control of Africa. “I think it is also shocking to them how those colonial continuities just live among us.”

Mvemba, who was born in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and raised in Germany, points to a potent example: Berlin’s African quarter, conceived in the late 19th century as a place where the city could host a permanent zoo that would exhibit both wild animals and humans in order to celebrate Germany’s colonial project.

While the zoo never came about, echoes of it resurfaced more than 100 years later, when a zoo in Bavaria sought to attract visitors by creating an “African village” that included performers and artisans.

The initiative went ahead despite widespread protests by anti-discrimination groups, Mvemba says, hinting at how Germany – a country often lauded for its efforts to deal with its more-recent past – had failed to meaningfully reckon with its history of colonialism. “So really, these tours are about making people reflect and realise that we are still living those colonial biases or reproducing them,” she says.

These efforts to connect the dots between the past and present come at a critical time for the continent, says Julia Browne. In 1994, she launched Walking the Spirit Tours , leading locals and visitors to Paris through the histories of those who had enabled slavery and confronted colonialism.

“It opens another chapter in the book of exploring French history – and European as well – and facing the facts, bringing it right out in front so that people can’t deny it,” she says. “And especially at this time, when the right wing is on the rise, the voices just have to keep getting stronger and stronger.”

In countries such as Italy, the Netherlands and Portugal, far-right parties have broken through to become key players in politics. In France and Germany, nativist parties are climbing steadily up the polls, pulling mainstream parties to the right as they compete for the attention of voters.

“They have a certain rhetoric and narration that creates fear in people, creates fear of what used to be called ‘the other’. And it gives the sense that people don’t belong if they’re not of European origin,” she says. “But it’s important for the other side to be heard, that, no, this is not the truth.”

She points to Place de la Concorde, set to be showcased to the world this summer during the Olympic Games. “But what else is there? There’s a place called Hôtel de la Marine. It’s a gorgeous building that’s been renovated, but it was in there that the system of slavery and colonialism was managed,” she says, describing it as an “administrative headquarters” for the country’s colonial empire before it was written into history as the location where the decree abolishing slavery in the colonies was signed in 1848.

People walking around a pond with a garden in the foreground and multi-storey buildings in the background

Nearby, is the Tuileries Garden. “It was there that slavery in the colonies was first abolished by the National Convention, but also re-established by Napoleon,” says Browne. “If you’re a person of colour, or have origins in the islands or origins in colonial Africa, these places are part of your history.”

In Madrid, Ondo’s walking tour begins to wrap up after crossing a crowded plaza where people were once sold to the highest bidder and visiting a church teeming with tourists seemingly oblivious to the symbols linked to enslavement carved into its stone walls.

His last stop, however, is at a changing roster of African restaurants in the city centre. It’s an ending with a dual purpose: showcasing the vibrant clutch of restaurants, including Senegalese and Equatorial Guinean, that have sprung up in recent years, and reinforcing how the stories of the past continue to colour life in Madrid today.

“All this is not really a thing of the past, it’s a thing that is still going on at the moment,” he says, pointing to the power that continues to be wielded by those whose families profited from slavery, to the companies that have supplanted colonial empires in extracting resources from the global south, and the EU’s crackdown on those risking their lives to cross the Mediterranean in small boats.

“It’s a never-ending process,” Ondo says. “It’s a transformation of the same issues of 200 years ago. Projects like mine and many others kind of open up a conversation about these things.”
