Jawili Falls

tourist spot in aklan philippines

A short drive of only a few minutes brings us to the sign that enthusiastically proclaims that the falls consist of 7 individual basins. After having paid the entrance fee it turns out that this water is literally crying out to us! My word, the water is so fantastically cool, just the right temperature! A few kids are climbing up and down and are performing tricks, such as sliding down one of the smaller waterfalls. We wisely take more care of our behinds and therefore merely look on. The sides of the basin however are quite slippery with algae, but the water is incredibly clear. The pond is too deep to stand in only in the middle. For those less than adventurous souls, you can get into the water from a shallow entrance and then just wade in.  Read More:   http://kalibo.tukcedo.nl/jawilihurom_e.html

7 Beautiful Spots Worth the Visit in Aklan

A quiet town with many natural wonders waiting to be explored. by Jazz Prado | July 25, 2016

The province of Aklan is mainly known for two things: the world famous island of Boracay and Kalibo’s Ati-Atihan Festival. Other than that, it’s rare to hear anything else about it. But what if we told  you that the province actually holds several off-the-path locations?

Hinugtan Beach

Just a short boat ride away from Boracay Island sits Hinugtan—an exclusive beach with powder-fine white sand, towering coconut trees, and a spectacular mountain view. There are no fancy hotels but there are nipa huts that you can rent for only PHP200.

The marine life here is abundant making the place perfect for snorkeling and even fishing. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also try jumping over jagged cliffs or hiking one of the nearby mountains.

The beach is really peaceful and serene, so it’s ideal for those who want to get away from the madding  crowd in Boracay.

Pagatpat Mangrove Park

Wrapped with a maze of mangroves is the Pagatpat Mangrove Park in Barangay Panilongan, Buruanga, Aklan. The place has connected bamboo bridges where you can stroll along, and admire the trees and fishes below.

There are also several nipa huts with karaoke machines where you can enjoy a drink while singing your favorite songs. The owners of the park even allow visitors to go down the huts to soak their feet or take a dip in the sea.

Hacienda Maria

If you’re looking for something a little more adventurous, then try visiting Hacienda Maria—a newly discovered eco-tourism destination located in Sitio Sapsapon, Brgy. Tigum, Buruanga, Aklan.  In order to reach the place, you’ll have to hike two kilometers up a steep mountain, and walk a few more kilometers to tour the whole area. But trust us when we say the struggle is worth it because you get to enjoy everything the place has to offer, starting with the waterfalls.

It doesn’t seem like it, but the deepest part of the waterfall’s base is actually over 10 feet deep, so it’s pretty safe to jump from the rocks.

Via facebook

Next, we have the caves. Hacienda Maria has two caves where you can see various forms of the glittering stalactite and stalagmite deposits inside. If you listen closely, you can even hear water kissing the stones, bringing a feeling of peace and oneness with Earth.

The place also lets you experience a hot pot jacuzzi, where you’ll be asked to sit in a big metal bowl filled with lukewarm water with assorted local limes and herbal leaves. A small fire is lit underneath but don’t worry! You won’t be cooked to death. It’s perfectly safe—relaxing, even.

Via wordpress

Locals there also show tourists how to make Lambanog, which they make out of coconut sap or tuba , and offer them free tastes.

Jawili Falls

Another one of Aklan’s many waterfalls is the Jawili Falls, found at Brgy. Jawili in Tangalan, Aklan, approximately 45 minutes away from Kalibo. This waterfall is definitely one of the most unique in the country because of its natural pools cascading to form a gigantic limestone staircase. Spring water pours from one basin to another, creating a series of seven mini waterfalls along its wake. And believe it or not, the entrance fee here is only PHP5!

Via travyde

Like in Hacienda Maria, a quick dip in the pools will tell you that some parts of it can reach as deep as 10 feet. So if ever you get to visit this place, don’t be surprised if you see lots of kids diving from one basin to another.

Ariel’s Point

Batason Point, or more commonly known now as Ariel’s Point, was featured in 2014 as Boracay’s top tourist attraction. But what people don’t know is that it isn’t actually part of Boracay. This famous diving spot is one of the tourist attractions that belongs to the town of  Buruanga, which is a completely different place.

The place has three different diving planks. The easiest one is the five-meter level, the other is eight meters high, and the highest plank is a 15-meter dive. For those who are concerned about drowning, you’ll be happy to know that the lifeguards are always ready  to assist divers.

There are other activities too, like snorkeling and kayaking. The place also has a restaurant that serves a BBQ lunch buffet and free-flowing drinks, creating a fun, party-like atmosphere.

One tip we can give you is not to buy packages at Boracay, as those are really expensive. Instead, just haggle for a small pump boat from locals in BuruangaSo you can get the same experience for a much cheaper price. Plus, with the rented boat, you can visit other beaches around the area, like Hinugtan Beach and Naasog Point.

Bakhawan Eco Park

Similar to Pagatpat, Bakhawan Eco Park is also a mangrove forest. The 220-hecatre park is actually dubbed as the country’s most successful mangrove reforestation project. And a little fun fact, bakhawan , in the local dialect, actually stands for the word mangrove.

The park is a good destination for tourists who just need to take a breather from busy streets and crowded places. Its 1.3-kilometer long bamboo trail passes by several fish and crustacean farms, and ends with a stunning view of the sea.

Here, you can take a rest by their cabanas, and just enjoy the scenery. There’s also a small store that offers snacks and refreshments for those who are tired and hungry from the long walk.

Malay Eco Park

A short tricycle ride away from Caticlan Port is Malay Eco Park. Here, you can relax in peace as the place is very serene, and shaded with lots of trees. Cottages are scattered around the area for those who want to have a picnic or maybe just sleep. There are also a few animals on the loose, like birds, goats, and even rabbits.

Upon entering the park, you will immediately see a display of a giant fossilized Leatherback Sea Turtle, and a few steps from it, a butterfly garden. Thecrew will help you pick up butterflies by

spraying your hands with sugar water. It turns out that while some butterflies love flower nectar, others prefer to eat sugar from rotting fruits.

At the highest point in the park, an amazing view of the town awaits you. On one side, you can look at mountains and the fields

On the other side, the sea. Fun fact: That island in the distance is actually Boracay.

These are just some of the nice vacation spots in Aklan. There are plenty more out there—from fields to rivers, and mountains to natural springs—so no need to worry about running out of places to visit. You can also ask the locals in the area for more information since they know the province best. Some of them might even be nice enough to accompany you.

8 Best places to visit in New Washington Aklan

By: Mariz Nicole C. Guanco

Explore the picturesque spots amidst the verdant topography of New Washington and discover what makes it “The Beautiful and Bountiful” town of Aklan.

Find out the rich history of the place known as the hometown of the former Archbishop of Manila and the late Jaime Cardinal Sin, while being recognized for the Blood Compact Celebration done every third day of March. After much wandering around and sightseeing, fear not of an empty stomach, for New Washington is dubbed as the Sea Foods Capital of Aklan, and you'll understand why once you get a chance to taste the local cuisine.

New Washington is a third-class municipality in the province of Aklan located at the northern part of Panay Island. It is a coastal municipality and an agricultural town having 16 barangays found either near the coastline or near the rice fields. It is the native town of Aklanon Katipuneros Romualdo Dalida, Isidro Jimenez, Cornelio Delfin, Valeriano Dalida, Benito Motus, Albino Rabaria, Teodorico Motus, and Juan Dalida who willingly performed blood compact as a symbol of eternal friendship and brotherhood in the fight for independence against the Spaniard regime.

The municipality of New Washington used to be called Fonda Lagatic because of the apparent Lagatik River which flows through the place at a length of 9.6 kilometres. It changed its name after being established on January 15, 1904. New Washington, as we now know it, was named after George Washington, the first president of the United States, as a tribute to the Thomasites, a group of American teachers who had fostered education in the Philippines in the early 1900s, then trained Filipino teachers with English as the medium of instruction.

Get ready to list down a bunch of places in New Washington to add on your travel bucket list. This article will cover the best places to visit while you’re here.

8. Fatima Lighthouse

This mysterious place at Barangay Fatima, New Washington, Aklan is a secret that only lives to shine at night to safely guide fishermen and small vessels. But now the word is out! Marvel at the beautiful scenery that awaits you. If you find beauty in simplicity, are searching for tranquillity, or just opt for less crowded places, this is the place to be.

7. Tambak Seawall

6. New Washington Town Plaza

5. Pink Sisters Convent

Located at Barangay Polo, New Washington, Aklan, the nuns here wear pink garments, thus the convent was named Pink Sisters. Seek divine intervention for your troubles or thank the Lord for your abundance, as you connect with God and pray at this haven for human souls. Buy religious materials like rosaries, bracelets, books and other religious souvenirs to help the Pink Sisters nuns earn a little profit for their everyday expenses and charity works and assistance.

4. Ortega’s Beach Resort

3. Ocean View Resort Bar & Restaurant

2. Isla Kapispisan

Explore this hidden paradise in Barangay Pinamuk-an, New Washington, Aklan. Pispis, the Visayan root word of its name “Kapispisan,” means birds, and Kapispisan, meaning flock of birds. Isla Kapispisan is a bird sanctuary converted from an abandoned 32-hectare fishpond into a mangrove reforestation, aqua silviculture, and ecotourism site through the efforts of ASU-College of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (ASU-CFMS), New Washington LGU and other cooperating agencies in the year 1997. It has become a place for learning for the fishery sectors and is slowly but surely becoming a tourist destination here in Aklan.

 KALIBO, AKLAN TRAVEL GUIDE

Kalibo Aklan Travel: Bakhawan Eco Park by P.A.V. Mahusay

Kalibo, Aklan

Here’s your updated Kalibo, Aklan Travel Guide. This post covers top tourist attractions, how to get to the place, festival and events, and a list of hotels/resorts.

Understanding Kalibo, Aklan

Originally known by a different name based on the language of its natives, Kalibo, a first class municipality of the province of Aklan, was once called “Akean” based on the name of the nearby river of the area, as extracted from the sound it creates. Where the water warbles through its passing down the line as if “boiling,” which in the native’s language is called akae or akae-akae, the river and subsequently the small village itself was called “Akean.”

The arrival of the Spaniards, however, also brought forth many other names to the place, either borne from misconception or simply out of convenience. Initially confused in what to call the place, the Spaniards once interchanged—albeit faulty— the province’s name—Aklan—for the settlement of Kalibo or vice versa.

In other cases, the community is also called for other names such as Calibo (with a “c” instead of “k”), Calibog, Daclan, or Adan, all of which deduced from hearing the word “Aklan” from the natives themselves.

However, Kalibo is indeed just a subset only of Aklan in that it is—in the modern sense—a municipality of the larger overall of the province. But unlike the province whose eponym was extracted from the onomatopoeia arising from the nearby river, the naming of Kalibo came from a historical perspective.

Highlighting the early conversion of the native’s religion to Roman Catholicism, the name Kalibo was conceived according to the number of Atis who attended the place’s first Catholic Mass—a thousand people. Hailed from the Aklanon word “sangkâ líbo,” meaning a thousand, Kalibo became the label of the place that is now the province’s burgeoning municipality.

During the time of the Spanish colonization, Aklan was still not an independent province given its inclusion with the now-nearby province of Capiz. It was not until a few centuries later—specifically, after World War 2 in 1956—that Aklan assumed its new identity as a province and subsequently having Kalibo as its capital. Technically-speaking, however, Kalibo is still yet to advance to a “city” status and thus is still a “municipality,” albeit a thriving one.

At the present, Kalibo is considered a 1 st -class municipality of the province which insinuates a strong and robust economy despite its low population of around 80,000 people, as of 2015 census.

Belonging to a group of provinces within a single landmass called Panay within Western Visayas, Aklan makes one of four and where Kalibo is seated around the northwest. As also a province with very close distance to the tourist hotspot that is the island of Boracay, the capital city makes for a launching pad to the nearby atoll.

Emphasizing the relatively developed level of the lifestyle of the native settlers of Kalibo, the municipality is subdivided into 16 different barangays, all of which considered “urban.”

The municipality is most known across the country and elsewhere for two major aspects: the Ati-Atihan festival, a celebration tributary to the infant Jesus; and the Bakhawan Eco-Park, a highly-valued mangrove forest, recipient of many awards.

Kalibo is the capital town of Aklan Province that occupies the northwest corner of heart-shaped Panay Island. It is home to the Kalibo International Airport, the main international airport that serves the resort island of Boracay.

Kalibo is famous for the annual Ati-Atihan Festival, which is celebrated every 3rd sunday of January. Held in honor of Santo Niño (the Child Jesus), this 800-year old festival is known as the “Mother of all Philippine festivals”. In the Kalibo town center, you’ll find the Museo it Akean (Aklan Museum) and the Kalibo Cathedral. Kalibo Mangrove (Bakhawan) Ecotourism Park in the town’s outskirts, is praised as one of the most successful mangrove reforestation projects in the country.

Kalibo is a good base to explore the beautiful natural spots and historic sites in various towns of Aklan Province. Explore the refreshing Jawili Falls & Jawili Beach in Tanglan. Madalag and Libacao are blessed with majestic waterfalls and mountain views.

Hello Marcos. I enjoyed this post on things to see/ do in Kalibo. Can you help me? I want to go to Aklan to experience how Pina cloth is made and to see people making clothing from it. Is there anyplace that you know of that can show a tourist this wonderful craft? I would really enjoy seeing it made, to learn about it, and to purchase some traditional items for myself. If you can respond with info I would appreciate it. Also, do you offer yourself as a guide around Kalibo and Aklan? Many Thanks!

You can start your search here: Dela Cruz House of Piña ( GMAP ). Make sure to ask if what you’re buying is 100% made from Piña fiber… great choice! I tailored a Piña barong in Kalibo 10 years ago, and it’s still good for use until now. Quality stuff! Great investment. No, I don’t offer tours. I’m a content creator.

7 Tourist Spots for Your PANDAN, ANTIQUE ITINERARY

tourist spot in aklan philippines

There are many towns in the Philippines named Pandan, and we’re sure each of them offers their own brand of adventure, but in the province of Antique, the town of Pandan has a variety of activities that could entice all kinds of travelers.

One would think the town is named after the pandan plant, but it was christened – as most Philippine towns are – by Spaniards. Back in the day, a group of Spanish soldiers happened upon a gaggle of local women. The former asked the latter where they can get food to which the latter responded by offering their basket of potatoes. “ Dan ”, one of them said – “that” in the local tongue. The foreigners misheard it and perhaps out of excitement, exclaimed, “Pan!” – bread in their language. And then, as it usually goes, the rest is history.

Pandan is about four hours from San Jose – the capital of Antique. Buses that go here are available at the San Jose Terminal. Fare is about Php210. The town is also accessible via Kalibo or Caticlan – in fact, it almost borders Aklan since it is the second northernmost town of Antique. There are vans and buses from either town that go to Pandan.

If you’re visiting Antique or Aklan soon, why not include a visit to Pandan? Here are seven activities you can do here.

WHAT'S IN THIS GUIDE?

Make the Most of the Country’s Cleanest River

Pandan is home to the Philippine’s Cleanest Inland Body of Water: the Bugang River. This river and its environs double as eco-tourism sites. You can try a bunch of activities like trekking, rappelling, and wall-climbing. But if you’re just going to do one thing, it should be river-tubing. You’d get to go on a pleasant trek to the head of the tubing site, going through thick forest for some wildlife-spotting and forest-bathing. You’ll also pass by the famed Blue Lagoon. It costs Php200 per person to go river-tubing. This already includes life vests and the guide fee.

Enjoy Water-sports at Naranjo Water Park

On one portion of the Bugang River is Naranjo Water Park where you can try a number of water-sports. Kayaks, stand-up paddle (SUP) boards, and pedal boats are available for rent. Kayak and SUP board rentals start at Php250 per person per hour, while pedal boats are at Php350 good for two. If there are ten of you in the group, you may opt for a river cruise aboard a motorized balsa for Php80 per head. The cruise takes about 30 minutes.

Chill at the Malumpati Cold Springs

If you’ve worked out a sweat from doing water sports, you may head to the Malumpati Cold Springs – which is still part of the Bugang River. The spring is a favorite of locals and it’s easy to see why. The water is freezing – ideal to wash off the heat of a summer day. The water here is so cold that you’ll see guests dunking in bottles of beer to “refrigerate” them! You may also rent one of the huts around the area and have some picnic – just make sure to dispose of your trash properly.

Have a Beach Day

Pandan may not have the white-sand beaches its neighbors are famous for, but it’s gray-sand shores are equally enticing. Swim, wade or just hang about and savor the ocean air. You may also stay until late in the afternoon to catch the sunset – this is one of the best places in Antique to go sunset-watching.

Check Out a Privately-ran Library

Right in the heart of town stands the LA Dioso Memorial Public Library. The National Library of the Philippines recognizes the establishment as one of the most well-stocked libraries in the country. It has a collection of over 20,000 titles all free to use by the residents of the town. The library also holds regular activities like storytelling and all kinds of workshops.

Hang Out at Dioso Farm

Retreat to the comfort of the trees in Dioso Farm. This parcel of land is tucked in a woodland of mostly rare native trees. Enjoy the rustic, countryside vibes while taking a dip in the pool fed by mountain water. You may also go for a nature walk along one of the trails designed primarily for bird-watching. If you make prior arrangements, you may also have a hearty lunch here that includes beloved kakanin or rice cakes. Contact +63 917 580 9648 or +63 933 815 5439 for more information. Support a Local Art

When shopping for pasalubong , the perfect place to go to is the village of Sto. Rosario. Here, the most skilled weavers of the traditional bariw can be found. Bariw ( Pandanus copelandii) is a plant closely related to pandan. You can choose from many bariw iterations like mats, bags, hats, and baskets.

Pandan has plenty of resorts and accommodations ranging from budget-friendly to splurge-worthy. One of the most popular places to stay is the Pandan Beach Resort.
