Paris by The MICHELIN Guide

See the Paris guide

a.lea is a play on words, referring to change (‘aléas’) and the name of the talented Chef Léa Lestage, who dabbled in sociology at university before rolling up her sleeves in the kitchens of the Polisson and Le Bristol’s Épicure. Examples of her appetising bistronomic cuisine include: creamy soft-boiled egg with pan-fried mushrooms and wild garlic pesto; roast mackerel with lightly seared polenta and béarnaise sauce; and tea-flavoured crème brûlée. Léa’s spot-on recipes feature a delicious market-fresh slant at sensible prices. Also a veteran chef, William Atlan now warmly greets guests in the tastefully appointed dining room. In the evenings, the menu is more elaborate, which is reflected in the price.

Chantoiseau

In 1765, Mathurin Roze de Chantoiseau opened the first modern restaurant (individual tables and dishes to choose from on a menu) in the Louvre area. In homage to him, brothers Nicolas and Julien Durand work in tandem to create lovely modern cuisine, which is also inspired by the French classics and makes use of fine quality produce, as in the delicious puff pastry pigeon pie.

L'Arcane

Led by Laurent Magnin, the young Arcane team marries technical skill and flavour, as in a beautiful light mousse with peas decorated with lemon zest and black lemon powder. Let's not forget the attractive wine list, which doesn't hesitate to think outside the box.

L'Esquisse

Two enthusiastic young food lovers have joined forces to create this inviting vintage bistro with solid wooden flooring and benches. A good time is had here, as you tuck into original dishes that make no bones about drawing on influences from far afield. For lunch there is a set menu with one option like pork terrine followed by chestnut and mushroom ravioli) and a mini à la carte menu; at dinner, you have more choices.

Le Bistrot du Maquis

André Le Letty, formerly of the Anacréon, has set up shop in the renowned Rue de Caulaincourt and specialises in bistro classics (this is not a great choice for vegetarians). Try pressed ox cheek in crystallised lemon, veal kidneys in mustard, roast hake, and not forgetting the house speciality: pressed duck served in two servings. On the decorative side, we have solid floors, bistro furniture and elbow-to-elbow tables – very Parisian.

Former music manager Arthur Hantz trained at several restaurants in Arles before setting up in Montmartre. He sends out playful and tasty market dishes with no more than three or four ingredients per dish, all the better to appreciate the textures and flavours. Be sure to try the chocolate mousse, a real delight, and the homemade ice cream.

After stints in top establishments from New York to Paris, two veteran chefs now swap places every fortnight, taking turns in the open kitchen and the dining room. 100% bistronomic cooking using local, fresh and seasonal ingredients is the backbone of this bistro in the Abbesses neighbourhood. The menu, chalked up on a blackboard daily, has a strong French bias and showcases deceptively simple recipes. ‘Ose’ means to dare – so what are you waiting for?

Sushi Shunei

This establishment is entirely dedicated to sushi, and sports an elegant and minimalist setting that follows the aesthetic codes of Japanese restaurants – including light wooden furnishings and a long counter facing the chef. You choose from the two set menus when you book; one focuses on nigiri and sashimi, the other includes tsumami and grilled fish too.

Stories behind the food

Passionate English-speaking foodie guide

Small group size for a personalized experience

Welcome to Montmartre!

Bonjour, foodies! Your culinary adventure begins at 10:30 am in Montmartre, where you’ll meet your knowledgeable guide and fellow group members. This vibrant neighborhood is known for its cobblestone streets, sweeping vistas, and impressive art scene, and has long been a haven for artists and foodies alike. Throughout the tour today, you’ll be introduced to some of its finest bakeries and eateries, and with a local guide leading the way, you’ll also happen upon hidden wine bars and artistic clues about its storied past.

Wake up your tastebuds

First things first—a baguette. Not just any baguette, though, an award-winning baguette! While made of only four ingredients (flour, water, yeast, and salt), the Parisians have mastered this simple recipe to create a perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside masterpiece. While you enjoy, learn how the baguette has long been a staple of Parisian culture and how France even has a law that specifies the ingredients and methods that can be used to make "traditional French bread".

Next, it’s time to shift your attention to the sweeter things in life during a visit to the “Picasso of Pastry.” Named after Pierre Hermé, a visionary in the world of patisserie, you’ll soon be biting into an absolutely divine macaron. What sets these apart, beyond their incredible mix of crisp, fluffy, and creamy textures, is the exotic flavors on offer.

Explore Montmartre

Between stops for bites, you’ll have plenty of opportunity to explore the hidden nooks and highlights of Montmartre alongside your expert guide. Delight in witty stories and fascinating fun facts as you stroll along charming streets, but don't forget to have your camera at the ready. From the iconic Moulin Rouge to the famous "I Love You" wall, there's no shortage of photo-worthy stops and unforgettable moments to capture. Montmartre is a neighborhood that has managed to retain its soul amidst the bustling city of Paris, and you’ll undoubtedly feel that with every step.

Cheese and Wine

No French culinary tour would be complete without cheese and wine, and soon, you’ll find yourself in one of Montmartre’s modern wine bars. As you sip local varietals and taste your way through a charcuterie, your guide will provide insights into how these trendy spots are redefining the Parisian wine scene with their focus on organic and biodynamic selections.

After three hours of exploring, dining, and sipping, it’s time to bid farewell to your guide and fellow foodies. With a happy stomach and a deeper appreciation for the art of French cuisine, you’ll be perfectly poised to continue your Parisian adventure independently. Thanks for joining!

We had PJ as our tour guide. He showed us how to shop like a local as well as giving us some interesting information about the foods we were eating. We got to try several delicious cheeses and meats, taste some good wine and enjoyed several desserts! Montmartre is a great area for the tour and PJ showed us a few of the sites and had stories to go with them!

What can I say about PJ that you guys dont know he was amazing so funny he was Montmarte he even saved us from pickpockets

I would not consider this a "food tour." This was more or a food "tasting." A "tour" implies we would have walked around trying different food at different places, but that's not what this was. This was walkint around, buying food and then going back to someone's basement to sample all of the food. Very weird setup.

Our guide Clément was fantastic, his passion for fresh local produce was evident from the fist stop. He was a wealth of information, entertainment and a great host. We enjoyed every bite and would highly recommend this tour!

This tour was very casual and fun. Tour guide (can't remember her name but was a young lady) was very gracious and fun. The food (except one "mystery dish" she wanted us to try) was awesome! Really got a flavor for the food of the area and the beautiful Montmartre area, which was very charming. The only issue on the tour was when we sat down at their secret basement dining area it was extremely hot and uncomfortable. Suggest the tour company invest in some better climate control in that space. Other than that we had a wonderful time on this tour.

PJ was very informative and made us laugh the whole time. Tour ran almost 5 hours. Great food and wine provided. Best food tour ever done. Give it a go as you will not regret it.

Our guide, Daphne, was amazing. She showed us a great inside view of historic Montmartre. After taking part in some sampling and gathering our food for the tasting, we got to experience her awesome storytelling abilities while we enjoyed our French cuisine. Highly recommend this tour!

I purposely choose the six pm tour as it was dinner time. We walked around Montmartre and stopped at many food establishments, we got to taste cheese, meats, crepes , macaroons. All very good but no Secrets! Could have done this on our own and for 200 euros bought samples plus! At end of tour went into basement and was served the samplings from the places we visited. We did have wine. Felt unsafe in basement as only egress was up a spiral staircase. Not suitable if unstable on feet.

We had a full day in Paris with no plans. We found this tour and it looked like the perfect afternoon. It was exactly that...perfect!! It was the right combination of walking, tasting, and learning about the area and it’s food! Marie, our guide, was delightful!! So knowledgeable, funny, and a joy to be with. We especially loved that we went to places where the locals went - not the touristy parts of Montmartre! HIGHLY recommend this tour! Thank you for such a wonderful afternoon, Marie!

We were taken to a chocolate shop, bakery for pastries and bread, a cheese store while walking through the charming neighborhood of Montmarte. Alice, our tour guide was delightful, informative and entertaining. She is a great ambassador for France! After our shared meal in the wine cellar, she gave us a list of restaurant recommendations and emailed us pics and information on all we ate!

Our tour guide was delightful. The food stops were memorable and delicious. Her explanations were thorough and interesting. We ended with a gathering with wine and samples from our walk that day. Terrific experience!

We throughly enjoyed this tour of the Montmartre area as our apartment was in the Pigalle area. Samuel, our guide, as extremely delightful, very knowledgable of the cheese, pastries, bakery, wines and meat products and did an excellent job of shepherding our group through streets of Montmartre. Our meal was enjoyable and just a perfect way to start or stay in Paris.

PJ was great and so was the food and the experience! We would definitely recommend this tour to anyone wanting to visit the region and learn about how to identify and purchase quality food at a French market, what wine, cheese and meat pairings work best and then indulging in the most delicious deserts. PJ knows his stuff and is great at including the history of the area and the food and some of the secrets as to why French food is always made with such quality and attention to detail. Go check it out! My teenage boys and I loved it!

We had a wonderful experience on this tour. Our guide, Emma, was kind and very informative. We talked around the streets of Montmartre and learned about the food and culture of the area. The food was very tasty and definitely left us full at the end of the day!

Our tour guide Ingrid is phenomenal! She took the time to explain everything and answer all our questions. You really get a great feel for Parisian life from a local. Lots of walking, but you wont be disappointed in the experience... or the food.

PJ was great. Extremely knowledgeable. My only criticism is that the tour ran longer than scheduled and we were stuck in a small room for over two hours. It was warm and this portion of the tour should have been shorter. But if you are interested in food keep your fingers crossed that you get PJ.

Our guide Capuchine was great. Food was great all around. Had a great time. Just a great way to see this very eclectic neighborhood

Terrific tour with Christophe. Montmarte was a great place for a walking tour and our guide was very knowledgeable. The second half of the tour was sit down and included a cheese, cured meat and wine tasting, complete with crepes and éclairs. The tour/tasting lasted 4 not 3 hours which was great - but you should know that if you have other tours or dinner reservations the same day. It was so much food - we could not even think about dinner after the tour. Highly recommend - but come hungry!

So much food to taste! Amazing experience if you like to try different foods!

Eleanore was great. I would definitely do this tour!! Well worth the money.

Hugo was the absolute best guide for our Paris Montmartre food tour! He was passionate about the food, wine, and Parisian living. Hugo educated us on Parisian history and taught us what to look for in the shop windows for the best retailers. When we picked up all the ingredients for our tasting, he taught us how to break off a piece of a baguette without flattening the bread. He shared how the best pairing of wine and cheese should be from the same region. We learned so much and enjoyed his tour immensely. I look forward to another future food tour with Hugo!

We did this tour on our first night in Paris. On our walking tour our guide pointed out a lot of really good places to eat that we then went back to during our stay all the places were just as good as she promised they would be. We learned A LOT of French history and got to try many things. I would recommend this tour if you love food, especially trying different things.

We had one night in Paris on our way home from Italy. This tour was such a treat. We met a small group of people and our guide, who was so nice and knowledgeable. I would recommend this tour on your first day in Paris, as the information we learned can help you when shopping for food in the city. We walked to a cheese shop, a butcher, a baker for baguette which was named best baguette in Paris in 2016, buying items at each place while we also had tastings. We also stopped in the most amazing small macaron shop, where we got to try two macarons and two pieces of chocolate - both heavenly. Once we made a few stops, when went to a little place with our items and sat around a table where we learned how to share baguette, got to know our fellow travelers and tasted our bounty. They started us off with sparkling wine, and moved on to red wine with the other items of cheese, cured meats, pates and dessert. Our guide gave us the opportunity to try some items we might not normally try - for some, its checking a box, but you wont know until you try. Aside from those items, we enjoyed great cheeses, meats, wine and bread. It was a lot of fun and became our dinner that evening. What a blast. Cannot recommend enough. We did the 6PM tour.

The Complete Guide to Montmartre Paris

If you’re visiting Paris then you’ll need to visit the wonderful Montmartre area of the city. Steeped in history, stunningly beautiful and with so much to see, it’s must-do during your trip to the city. From the famous white church (the Sacré-Cœur) to the Moulin Rouge, Montmartre is home to some of the city’s most iconic monuments and boy is it fun to explore.

Our guide is written by someone who actually lives in Paris and has done for the last 8 years. So read on to discover more about the incredible area of Montmartre!

Our guide is split into the following sections:

What is Montmartre and Where is it in Paris?

Practical information, what to do & see, where to eat & drink in montmartre, where to stay in montmartre, is montmartre paris safe at night, is it a good place to stay in paris, how to get there, montmartre wine festival.

Montmartre is an area in the 18th arrondissement, on the right bank and in the north of the city. It was once an ancient village outside of the city centre dating back to the 12th century where the Saint-Pierre church (which still stands today) was first founded by Louis VI. The old village survived the capital’s tumultuous years of change and finally became absorbed by the city in 1860.

montmartre sacre coeur

Nowadays Montmartre is known for its artistic side with Renoir and Picasso having lived and worked in the area. It’s also home to the famous white domed Sacré-Cœur basilica on the top of the hill which looks down to the rest of the city. The lower section of Montmartre, Pigalle, is known for its night-life and fantastic bars.

The area itself has been, on the whole, untouched by years of change and the area has retained it’s old Parisian charm. The old, cobbled streets are lovely to walk around in and take in the sights of the ancient area. For me, it’s definitely one of the must-do areas of the city!

I’d recommend visiting Montmartre by foot – it’s the only way to really explore the area.

It’s also an area of the city with few metro stations but there is the Montmartrobus which loops down from Pigalle, up past the Sacré-Cœur to the Clignancourt square and back again. It’s a very small electric bus (that isn’t disability friendly) that was made especially for the small, narrow streets of Montmartre.

montmartre practical info

Note : The old village of Montmartre is on-top of a 128m high hill and getting by foot means climbing up many of the famous staircases of Montmartre. I’d advise to wear comfortable shoes and to bring a bottle of water!

Montmartre has so many things to see and do. It’s a charming old area of Paris which is perfect just to walk around and

Sacré-Cœur: The Sacré-Cœur Basilica is one of the most iconic monuments of Paris. Located right at the top of the hill, the white domed church is a must-visit. It’s free to enter the main church or you can pay to climb up to the top. The area infant of the church has uninterrupted views across the city.

view from the sacred coeur

Place du Tertre: The Place du Tertre is the old central square of the ancient village. Here’s where you’ll find the famous artists of Montmartre painting portraits & caricatures. There’s a limited amount of artists and their spots are highly sought after – they work is even judged by professionals to ensure that they’re good enough to be there

Wall of Love: The Wall of Love is a large wall contains the words ‘I love you’ 311 times in 250 languages. It’s located right next to the Abbessess metro station in Montmartre.

The Vineyard of Montmartre: A peculiarity of Montmartre is that is has the only vineyard in the city. On the smaller side, you unfortunately can’t go inside but you can walk around the outside. Located a stones throw from the Sacré-Cœur, it’s also next to the famous ‘pink restaurant’ and the Au Lapin Agile cabaret.

Tip: If you love food and want to do discover Montmartre in one evening then I’d recommend you go on an evening food tour in Montmartre – click to read our unbiased review. You can also book tickets here directly.

Montmartre is home to some fantastic restaurants but there’s also a lot of tourist traps (especially around and below the Sacre-Cœur!). I’d avoid going to any restaurants with English menus and photos of the food outside.

For really good French food in Montmartre I’d recommend Le Réciproque , Chantoiseau or, on the cheaper side, Bouillon Pigalle . Click below to read more about these restaurants:

Guide to the Best Restaurants in Montmartre

Tip: Avoid eating in the famous Place du Tertre (the square next to the Sacre-Cœur. This square, although charming, is full of overpriced tourist traps that don’t serve particularly good food! (it is nice for a drink though)

If you’re wanting on the hunt for somewhere to drink in the area then you’re in luck, there are some of the best bars in the city in Montmartre! The majority are in the Pigalle area , on the footsteps of Montmartre. I’d recommend trying the Dirty Dick and Le Lipstick for some fantastic cocktails. 5 of the Best Bars in Montmartre

There are some fantastic hotels in Montmartre and we’ve picked 3 of our favourites.

  • Terrass Hotel : This is a really nice 4* hotel located at the end of Rue des Abbesses. The hotel overlooks the incredible Montmartre Cemetery and also has a fantastic rooftop bar.
  • Hôtel Des Arts : The Hôtel Des Arts is another beautiful 4* boutique hotel in the heart of Montmartre. The hotel’s in a stunning old Parisian building and they’ve kept the vintage Paris charm in their beautiful decor.
  • Manolita: The Manolita is a 5* hotel which is perfectly located right next to the Moulin Rouge. Here you’ll be in the middle of the eclectic Pigalle neighbourhood which is perfect to explore Montmartre and the surrounding areas.

FAQ: Montmartre

Montmartre is generally a safe area but, just like the rest of the city, there are some spots you will want to careful in. The Pigalle area gets very lively at night and there can be some sketchy characters around. I’d advise to avoid the dimly lit areas and side streets.

Around the Sacré-Cœur and the Place du Tertre there will be some scammers so avoid individuals approaching you. Find out more on popular scams in Paris in our Is Paris Safe guide.

Yes! Montmartre generally has a very authentic Parisian feel despite the high density of tourists. It’s still very central and you can easily walk down the Seine and explore other areas of the city. I would say that, depending on where you’re staying, as it’s on a hill, you will be walking up and down a lot .

staircases in montmart

You can get to Montmartre by metro on Line 2 which serves the stations at the bottom of Montmartre ( Pigalle, Anvers and Blanche ). You can also skip a lot of the stair cases by taking Line 12 which goes to Abbesses – this is the most central metro station in Montmartre.

How to Get to Montmartre from the Eiffel Tower

Getting to the Montmartre from the Eiffel Tower isn’t the most straight forward and by public transport the quickest route takes around 40 minutes.

By Bus: The Bus 30 goes directly from the Eiffel Tower to Pigalle. It stops just opposite on the river side, on the Pont d’Iéna. Note that you’ll need to have a travel pass or you can buy a single one way ticket with cash. By Metro: You can take Line 6 from Bir-Hakeim and then change for Line 2 at Charles de Gaulle – Étoile . The walk to Bir-Hakeim takes around 10 minutes from the tower itself and then the metro ride takes around 20 minutes. You can get off either at Pigalle or Anvers and walk up.

Every year there’s a wine festival (the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre ) which takes place in mid October. The festival celebrates the annual wine harvest from Montmartre’s vineyard and has become a huge event bringing in wine lovers from across the city. It’s on my favourite food and drink events in the year and it’s a must-do if you’re around in October! Click here to find out more about the festival.

Embrace the spirit of Paris like a local while exploring the charming village of Montmartre.

On Secret Food Tour: Montmartre, you will discover the true spirit of this breathtaking area. When Parisians buy food, they go from high-end boutiques to shop, gathering the best ingredients for their meals. We do the same, giving you samples of food along the way. Don’t forget the Secret Dish! You'll end at a secret location to enjoy this meal like a local. Alcohol may be enjoyed by those of legal drinking age.

With Hira at Food Tours, we had the best food tour ever! It was a fun way to experience a variety of foods while learning more about the neighborhood. In an old wine cellar, we finished with a tasting. Which was great because it turned out to be chilly and a little bit rainy outside. All of the cuisines was prepared for us by Hira, who was highly knowledgeable about France! She brought me a small quiche to replace the meat since I am a vegetarian, which I greatly appreciated! I highly recommend everyone to take this tour!

What a fantastic way to get a taste of Parisian culture! Yann, our tour guide, did a great job showing us around Paris's streets and introducing us to many of the neighborhood food stores. We stopped at various shops along the route to collect food, and once we were all seated, we sampled everything! During our stay in Paris, this was one of our favorite tours. Would strongly recommend it.

My wife and I enjoyed our tour of Le Marais and learned a lot about the area's history, culture, and delectable French cuisine (including croissants, chocolate, tea, cheese, wine, and falafel). For our small party, our tour guide, Ingrid, spoke fantastic English and was incredibly informative. The ease and pleasure of our trips to all the shops were a result of Ingrid's local expertise and acquaintance with the store owners. I absolutely recommend this tour for adding information to your vacation to Paris and enhancing your appreciation of other aspects of it.

Eating! It was wonderful to stroll through the Montmarte area and stop by the many shops, and everything of the food that we were given to sample was amazing. Hira, our tour guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the food, its history in Paris, as well as interesting tidbits about the area and city. She also recommended restaurants and places to go while we were there. We had a blast and would definitely do it again.

This was the second time we had used Food Tours to learn more about a place and its food culture. Despite the fact that we have visited Paris quite often, we frequently return to the same spots. That is what attracted us to this trip as we haven't spent much time in Montmartre. The journey began promptly with a stop for macarons and chocolate. I had never understood the buzz surrounding macarons before this stop, but it made me a convert. Agatha slipped inside a cheese shop, a bakery, and a butcher shop. She put together a feast of baguettes, cheeses, charcuterie, and wines along the road, which we enjoyed at a table in a hotel along the way. All 12 participants had plenty to eat and drink before leaving. We ended with a stop for dessert crepes that, despite us being more than full, we managed to complete. Agatha did an excellent job of talking about the delicacies, describing their origins, and suggesting which wines would emphasize the tastes.

What a wonderful way to wrap up our mother-daughter trip to Paris! A food and wine tour seemed like a nice bonus since we were ready to explore Montmartre, but it far exceeded our expectations. The meal we had was some of the best Paris had to offer, according to Agatha, who was beautiful and a pleasure to talk to. The secret location at the end of the tour was ideal for having fun as a group. She made our tour of the city one that would attract us to want to see and do more. I would encourage EVERYONE to consider this experience highly recommended! ??

Our tour guide was Leo, and he was SPECTACULAR!!! Leo made our trip even more special because we were there for my friend's bachelor party. He was really interesting, knowledgable, and courteous. His suggestions were all spot on. Because they were so wonderful, we even returned to the locations after the tour was complete and bought a ton more delicious items. I would absolutely do it again and would highly suggest this tour, especially with Leo.

Cleo

Aicha was our favorite component for this tour! Such a sweet, modest young woman. She has a servant's heart at her core. Aicha was particularly considerate of the old woman, who was walking with a cane, making sure she had a seat and wasn't left too far behind the others. The tour's culinary items were all fantastic, and the vendors were all incredibly friendly and gracious. My clients who were with me as travel advisors were completely amazed! Bravo, Secrets!

Theo, our tour guide, offered us a taste of the history and cuisine of Paris' Marais neighborhood. On this particularly hot afternoon, he was very knowledgeable, considerate of our needs, and entertaining. It made for a fantastic day of meeting new people, touring this stunning city, and stuffing oneself with delectable food! By the time this trip is up, you will be stuffed!

...a pleasure to work with. Following a prompt payment confirmation email, they send us a thorough email outlining the meeting location for our tour tickets. We arrived at the meeting location a few minutes early and ran across Louis (with his orange umbrella). He added that since no one else had signed up, this would be a private tour—bonus!—after the introductions. Louie was a pleasant guy who was very knowledgeable about the background and surroundings of Montmartre. On the tour, he gave us a lot of background information on the places we were passing by or seeing. He would explain the wines, desserts, cheeses, and meats that were being sampled. He called our attention to details or hidden treasures that we would have likely passed by if we had been exploring on our own. We made a total of five breaks, two of which were brief while the other three required us to sit down. The time we spent with Louie was wonderful and relaxed. We took a snapshot at the end of the evening, which he emailed to us with information about the sites, wines, and meals we had during the tour. I would advise everyone visiting Paris to do this tour. The event was definitely worth the cost.

Secret Food Tours – Paris Montmartre

best food tour montmartre

Sharing is caring!

I can’t tell you how excited I was to finally be able to take another food tour, and in Paris no less. Now I thought I’d be trying the weirdest foods, and the term “weird” is super relative. But the way my palette is set up, the foods I eat and actually enjoy are minimal. One thing I did think I’d be testing out and didn’t was escargot. But I promise I’ll go out of my way to try it next time. This particular tour was run by Secret Food Tours Paris Montmartre. It was perfect for me because I was staying in Montmartre and was able to walk to the meeting point, albeit I went the entirely wrong direction the first time.

First let me say that I will not be sharing the locations of any of the eating places. If you want the best foods in the Montmartre (and possibly Paris) area, you should definitely sign up for one of their tours here . Also keep in mind that I first took one of their food tours in Madrid and it was amazing as well.

Why I Opted for a Food Tour

best food tour montmartre

Food tours are a great way to not only eat like the locals, but you get to find out WHERE the locals eat. I mean, why go all the way to Paris and not have cuisine that’s deemed Parisian? I live for a good food tour because it becomes a walking and history tour all in one. You find out about certain landmarks and history while chowing down on some good eats. You basically pig out and walk it all off. Goodbye food-baby!

I also love them because it’s a great way to not only find out where you should eat, but you get better and better at choosing good restaurants. PRO TIP: If they have an english menu, keep walking. Now I’m not saying everyone with a menu in another language is horrid, but it tends to be a sign that they may not be as authentic as you believe. On this tour, Claire, our guide, also taught us the signage to look out for when it comes to shops and why the local, small establishment will always be the best.

What Went Down

best food tour montmartre

I hopped out of bed and ran to meet Claire and the rest of the group to begin our food tour. I repeat, I hopped out of bed. So I was surprised to find out that we’d start with sweets. First a chocolate shop and then macarons. Spoiler alert: IT’S NOT LADURÉE. I don’t know that any chocolate on earth can quite compare to Swiss chocolate, but it was hands down some of the best I’ve ever had in life. TIP: if you’re unsure about a chocolate shop, go in and test their base chocolates (white, milk, dark). If it’s delicious, then you’re probably safe to go back in and go wild on the candy.

I’m pretty simple when it comes to my sweets so I opted for the milk and dark chocolate bases. They were heavenly. When it came to the macarons, I can honestly say they were the best I’ve had, but I still am not a macaron fan. Claire recommended we try the outlandish flavors because really, how often would we have hand crafted macarons on the house, but I opted for one of my pair to be a simple lemon flavor.

Now moving on to the why I was here: bread, cheese, charcuterie. Could a girl really ask for more?

best food tour montmartre

We started out grabbing more than a few fresh baguettes. I mean, just made and still piping hot where you could see the steam, baguettes. We broke bread, literally, and then continued on to a cheese shop. There I stood on a tiny sidewalk in Montmartre, probably in someones way, and had the absolute best cheese of my life. No exaggeration. And our last stop was to pick up a variety of pâtés and sausages, but not before trying out a yummy garlic sausage first.

Now that we were done grocery shopping, we headed to a location to sample everything. It truly seemed like the baguettes, meats and cheeses were on an endless conveyor belt. And how could I forget the wine? Funnily enough, Claire doesn’t care for Bordeaux wines but when I say I had the most DELICIOUS Bordeaux red, EVER… I’m actually sitting in an airport lounge right this minute, sipping a bordeaux because I’m cool, and fancy, and Bordeaux my new thing.

Should you take this tour?

best food tour montmartre

I highly recommend this tour and recommend you seeking out Secret Food Tours  in a city near you. The guides are always knowledgeable about the area and cuisine, and are the best resources when it comes to food! I always get great restaurant recommendations, find out if the places I’m going to/have been are worth it, and to be honest, I’m genuinely interested in why regions eat what they do. I mean, the story about the Portuguese and cod fish just may be the most random you’ll ever hear.

You should definitely take a food tour by your second day in a new location. This guarantees the yummiest of meals throughout your journey. Bon appétit!

Pasta lovers will love the many variations this warm restaurant offers. Dine on the Linguini, Ravioli, or Risotto, and wash it down with a glass of Limoncello.

16. Le Poulbot (€€)

Le Poulbot is one of the best restaurants in Montmartre, Paris.

Location: 3 Rue Poulbot, 75018 Paris, France |  contact: +33 01 42 23 32 07

Le Poulbot’s cozy yet fantastic ambiance pairs nicely with the fine food, excellent wine list, and humorous staff, making it impossible not to enjoy.

A minute’s walk from Espace Dali, this hole-in-the-wall restaurant interior takes you back in time with its stonewalled and wooden decor.

Enjoy nicely prepared traditional French classics such as the onion soup, the highly reviewed Duck confit served with red wine coulis and homemade fries, and the sweet Crème Brûlée with Lavender.

This eatery also boasts a menu offering vegetarian-friendly and gluten-free options.

17. L’ Anvers du Décor (€€)

L' Anvers du Décor is one of the best places to eat in Montmartre.

Location: 32Bis Rue d’Orsel, 75018 Paris, France | contact: +33 01 42 58 17 56

A 3 minutes walk from the Halle St-Pierre, L’Anvers du Décor will serve you a diverse menu of homemade creative and flavorful gastronomic delights with vegetarian-friendly, vegan, and gluten-free options.

Must-order dishes include Frog Legs, Duck Confit, Mussels, and Rib Steak with Mushrooms.

The outdoor terrace of this cozy restaurant makes for a great view of the Montmartre streets and is an ideal spot for family hangouts and group meetings.

Unlike many restaurants in Montmartre that close after 2 pm and reopen for dinner, L’ Anvers du Décor stays open from morning till evening, so you’ll find something to eat regardless of when you go.
