MAGHERAMORNE QUARRY

best game of thrones tour from dublin

This location was used for many scenes in  Game of Thrones  including the defences of  Castle Black during the battle of Blackwater Bay , Hardhome and the Wall.

There is no public access to the quarry but the location was used extensively in season 8 when a  massive green screen  was erected and many of  the final season’s  battle scenes were shot there.

The quaint seaside town of Carnlough was known in the series as the  free city of Braavos . Arya finds Jaqen H’ghar here and learns how to become an assassin.

In season 6, when she is attacked by the waif from the fearless men, Arya drags herself up the iconic steps of Carnlough Harbour to reach safety. We’ll pass these steps and learn about the most iconic GOT moments that have happened here — a must-see spot on any Game of Thrones Tour in Ireland.

CUSHENDUN CAVES

best game of thrones tour from dublin

The picturesque village of Cushendun, along the Causeway Coastal Route, is an important  Game of Thrones’ filming location in Ireland . The wild coastline serves as the background for  ships sailing from Westeros  in the series and, if you venture slightly farther, you’ll find the caves where  Melisandre gives birth to a murderous shadow baby in season 2 . This is also where Jamie Lannister has his last fight on his failed attempt to save Cersei in Game of Thrones Season 8

LARRYBANE QUARRY

best game of thrones tour from dublin

Larrybane Limestone Quarry plays a big role in season 2 and 6 of Game of Thrones.

It is the  location of Renly Baratheon’s camp in season 2 , and the place where Brienne of Tarth proves herself in single combat against Ser Loras of the Flowers. But that’s not all. Much has happened in this limestone quarry: Littlefinger sought out Catelyn Stark who arrived to negotiate with King Renly; and when Euron realises that his niece and nephew have stolen his ships, Rathlin island provides the perfect backdrop for his escaping fleet!

FULLERTON (LUNCH STOP)

best game of thrones tour from dublin

Next, we’ll stop at The Fullerton Arms, a hotel in which many of the cast have stayed while filming. The hotel not only serves good food but also boasts a themed dining room with its very own  Iron Throne . Pose for a photo and then stop to admire door 6, a beautiful piece made from a tree from the Dark Hedges and dedicated to Drogon, Denaerys’ favourite dragon.

best game of thrones tour from dublin

The small town of Ballintoy, close to the Giant’s Causeway on the North Antrim coast, is used for exterior shots of  Pyke, capital of the Iron Islands . It is here where Theon Greyjoy returns from Winterfell to start negotiations with his father Balon. As this region is difficult to access, we’ll enjoy a quiet tour away from large coaches. Explore the area and, as you look out over the ocean, imagine embarking on a quest to rival those of the series.

GIANT’S CAUSEWAY

best game of thrones tour from dublin

This unique attraction is the  only UNESCO world heritage site in Northern Ireland . 50 to 60 million years ago, a volcanic eruption under the sea caused rapid cooling of the Basalt lava, leaving 40,000 interlocking basalt columns up to 12 metres high. You cannot afford to miss a visit the  Giant’s Causeway  while in Ireland.

DUNLUCE CASTLE

best game of thrones tour from dublin

Next stop is the  House of Greyjoy ! Dunluce Castle was built by the McQuillan family around 1500. It is located on the top of sheer-sided cliffs 100 feet above the ocean – the  perfect location for one of the Great Houses of Westeros . The Castle’s dramatic history of violence, intrigue and rebellion is matched by the  scandal and betrayal committed by the Greyjoys in Game of Thrones .

DARK HEDGES

best game of thrones tour from dublin

The Stuart family planted this beautiful avenue of beech trees in the 18th century. They couldn’t have known the worldwide interest their now-famous beech trees would achieve. More than two centuries later, they starred as the  King’s Road  in Game of Thrones.

  • Stefan Herlein ★★★★★ 3 months ago Did the Northern Ireland highlights day trip from Dublin. Amazing experience. Fantastic day spent learning about the troubles, exploring castle ruins and wondering the giants causeway. Perfect way to spend a day in Ireland! The Company was great, the tour guide and bus driver were professional and so much fun. A little more time at the deluce castle would have been nice, but time was limited. 100% … More recommend this experience.
  • Cari Gray ★★★★★ a week ago Our tours were great! We had guide Una with driver Patrick to Belfast, Dunluce Castle, and Giants Causeway, then guide Kevin with driver Marko to Cliffs of Moher. Ennis, and Bunratty Castle (we chose Ennis because the pics of Galway looked crowded). Our guides were friendly, entertaining, and were very knowledgeable of Irish history and the areas we visited. Our drivers were nice and got us to all … More our destinations safely. We ended up arriving to Ireland a day late and had no problem changing our tour dates. We highly recommend Wild Rover Tours!
  • Dan Jones ★★★★★ 3 months ago This was a fantastic trip. I took the Belfast / Giants Causeway for the day. Our driver Warren, was friendly and drove very safely. Our guide for the day, Una was incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, funny, and genuinely pleasant to spend the day with. This tour combined excellent sites. I really enjoyed it.
  • Dianne Bulman ★★★★★ 5 months ago Belfast and Giants Causeway tour was fantastic, our guide Sara was very knowledgeable & provided personal information that was relevant to the tour. She was engaged throughout our tour while also allowing time for passengers to enjoy time among themselves. Krishna our driver was also great. Emmanuel our Black Cab driver was amazing - very pointed in his account of his experience. We lucked out … More with a beautiful sunny day to enjoy all the sights! Definitely a day we’ll spent!
  • Sonia Rodriguez ★★★★★ a week ago The tour was wonderful, we enjoyed Glendalough, Kilkenny and Wicklow...the tour guide was so engaged and humorous. We learned so much history. Heading back to California content. Irish people were fabulous and kind.
  • Elizabeth Bradley ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago This tour was exceptional. We learned a considerable amount of information from our very sweet guide Rory. He is so knowledgeable. Now I know why they are called the fighting Irish! We had an excellent time at the Cliffs, even though it was very windy. Had a really excellent meal while there and shopping. Stunning views, but the puffins don’t come out till April. Then we went to Galway, did some thrift … More store shopping, ate lunch and had wine at a real Italian restaurant then bummed around. It’s a vibrant atmosphere. The stops are timed perfectly and they are very patient and kind with getting everyone organized. I give this 10/10!
  • Katharine Young ★★★★★ 3 weeks ago We loved it! Our tour guide Rory and driver Steven were great. Gave us amazing recommendations for both Galway and Dublin, and overall provided a great experience for my friend and I! It was our first time in Ireland and I definitely would recommend this tour!
  • Natalia Ivanjko ★★★★★ 4 months ago We had a really lovely tour through Northern Ireland visiting Belfast and Giant Causeway. I would absolutely recommend black cab tour with local taxi drivers. Besides, the northern coastline landscape is absolutely stunning. Our guide Sean was extremely helpful and funny. P.S. Great playlist :) We really enjoyed this tour!
  • acid pro ★★★★★ 3 months ago My wife and I were on the trip from Dublin to Galway through the cliffs of moher. We were very pleased and satisfied and got our money's worth. The coach was comfy and clean, our driver Pete and guide David were very professional, friendly and helpful. We will recommend this to our friends and family and we would definitely take another trip with Wild rover next time we visit.
