Best Wineries & Wine Tours to Experience in South Australia’s McLaren Vale Wine Region

The McLaren Vale wine region is just 40 minutes south of Adelaide on the Fleurieu Peninsula. The region’s proximity to breathtaking coastline and its abundant vineyards makes it one of the prettiest wine regions in South Australia. It is patterned with abundant vineyards and is well-established, with wineries producing gutsy reds that rival those from Barossa Valley .

McLaren Vale is bordered on three sides by Adelaide to the north, Mt. Lofty Ranges to the east and south, and Gulf St. Vincent to the west. It enjoys a Mediterranean climate cooled by gully winds that blow through the ranges, and ocean breezes that blow up through the Gulf of St. Vincent. The region benefits from warm summers, moderate winters, and winter rainfall.

Vineyards in McLaren Vale South Australia

The History

According to “How to Drink Australian” by Jane Lopes and Jonathan Ross , an English immigrant named John Reynell, who came to Australia in 1838, planted the first vines in McLaren Vale. He produced his first vintage in 1842. Shortly afterward, Reynell hired another English immigrant, Thomas Hardy, who then went on to become the largest winemaker in the colony by the late 1890s. The turn of the century brought a wine boom in South Australia.

In 1947, a wave of European immigrants brought a renewed interest in wine, and, as such, a resurgence in new plantings took place. By the late 1950s, a boutique wine industry had emerged in McLaren Vale. Coriole, Wirra Wirra, David Noon, and other producers who are still significant today emerged in the 60s and 70s. The 2000s ushered in a new era for McLaren Vale with a new set of wineries, environmental sustainability, and site specificity.

One of the Most Diverse Wine Regions

Today McLaren Vale is one of the most diverse wine regions in Australia with over 80 cellar doors. With easy access from Adelaide , the region offers luxury accommodations, world-class cuisine, and of course, some of the best wine in Australia.

While most people visit McLaren Vale on a day trip out of Adelaide, there are plenty of hotels, bed and breakfasts, and Airbnb rentals throughout the region. For an insider’s look at McLaren Vale, Chooks Little Winery Tours offers small-group, customized tours to hidden gems in the area.

What Guests Like About It: A wide variety of wines to choose from, including some unusual varieties

The tasting room is housed in a heritage-listed barn overlooking estate vineyards. Inside has a rustic, “edgy” feel to it. Outdoor seating is also available. Alpha Box and Dice is popular with a young crowd and fills up quickly. Arrive early or book ahead.

In 2008, Alpha Box and Dice embarked on a journey to produce an Alphabet of Wines. Each “letter” represents an individual winemaking project. The winery aims to produce different varieties grown in South Australia based on availability and the quality of fruit. Winemaker Sam Berkata employs innovation by bending traditional winemaking norms such as including skin contact in his white wines. You can also expect delightful Rosés and unique red varieties like Saigneé Aglianico and Pinot Meunier. The winery produces nearly sixty different wines, offering something for everyone’s palate.

Open Saturday and Sunday, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm. Reservations recommended. Tasting fees $15 (AUD) – $20 (AUD).

Coriole Vineyards

79 Chaffeys Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8323 8305

What Guests Like About It: Beautiful views, onsite restaurant, and excellent wines

Coriole Vineyards

Coriole is conveniently located in the heart of McLaren Vale. It sits on top of the Seaview Ridge giving travelers stunning views of the valley. Coriole also features a boutique retail store and top-rated restaurant.

It produces all-estate wines with several international varietals mixed into their 80 acres of land under vine. Coriole has been a pioneer of Italian varieties since 1985, with the oldest Sangiovese and Fiano vineyards in Australia.

Coriole Vineyard Restaurant uses ingredients sourced from McLaren Vale as well as the winery’s own produce garden and farm. The menu features two different “Feed Me” options at $80 (AUD) and $95 (AUD) per person, plus an a la carte menu on weekdays. Guests can also choose an optional wine pairing. It is a favorite for locals and nearby Adelaide residents, so be sure to book ahead if you plan to have a meal.

Tasting room is open daily 11:00 am – 5:00 pm. The restaurant is open daily during the summer. The wine tasting fee is $15 (AUD), and the cellar door accepts walk-ins. Groups of six or more must have a pre-booked reservation. The tasting fee is $30 (AUD) per person and includes cheese platters to share.

58 Osborn Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8329 4888

What Guests Like About It: There is so much to see and do here beyond the wine tasting

D'Arenberg's "Rubiks Cube"

D’Arenberg’s popular cellar door stands out in the McLaren Vale Region for its unusual shape and color. Its tasting room, restaurant, and museum are housed in a five-story Rubik’s cube-like structure. Located on the top level of the d’Arenberg Cube, the tasting room has panoramic views over McLaren Vale, the Willunga Hills and the Gulf St. Vincent.

The Osborn family, in its fourth generation of owning the winery, has teamed up with the State Government Regional Development Fund to create this designation-worthy cellar door and art Museum in the heart of McLaren Vale. “The Cube” is not the first major influence the Osborn family has had in the region during their 150+ year history. Back in the 1970s, during the South Australian vine pull scheme, the family saved several old-vine Grenache vineyards from being ripped up by purchasing them themselves.

The d’Arenberg Cube is like walking into the mind of Chester Osborn, the Fourth Generation of the family, who is the creative and expressive personality behind it. But lest you think d’Arenberg is just a gimmick, the wine here is award-winning. The iconic Dead Arm Shiraz and the Hermit Crab, to name a few, are best sellers.

The restaurant onsite is designed with an equally artful design in mind. d’Arry’s Verandah restaurant is open for a degustation menu during lunch hours. Other epic offerings include a helicopter tour, plane tour, blending of your wine, and more. Be sure to stop by the toilet on your way out…you’ll be amused and delighted at the quirkiness.

There is a $10 fee to enter the cube itself; this allows you admission into their Alternate Realties Museum and a tasting of their wines. Open daily 10:00 am – 4:30 pm. Reservations recommended.

Hugo Family Estate

246 Elliot Road, McLaren Flat

+61 8 8383 0098

What Guests Like About It: The beautiful grounds, guided tasting, cheese and Ploughman’s platters

Outside tasting area at Hugo Family Estate

The 50-acre Hugo Family Estate is one of the most eastern in the McLaren Vale region, at 180-meters above sea level. As a result, conditions are remarkably cooler and ideal for premium grape growing and hence, the production of fine, well-balanced elegant white and red wines.

Inside tasting room at Hugo Family Estate

The Hugo family has utilized this climatic advantage to ensure a high level of consistency across vintages and by selectively hand picking from the vines. Expect elegant and subtle Chardonnays, Shiraz that is spicy yet soft with tannins, and herbaceous earth Tempranillos. The cellar door features nearly 360-degree gorgeous views of the surrounding vineyards. Open daily, $15 (AUD) refundable tasting fee. Reservations encouraged.

Kangarilla Road Cellar Door

44 Hamilton Road, McLaren Flat

+61 8 8383 0533

What Guests Like About It: A wide variety of wines to suit everyone’s palate, colorful artwork

The list is long here at this cellar door, but well worth wading into for depth and unusual varieties available. One of the best things about Kangarilla Road Wines is that although they could easily wear much bigger price tags, they don’t! Fantastic value given the quality and there is no set tasting menu. Guests are welcome to try any wine that Kangarilla produces.

A well-appointed tasting room is adorned with unique artworks. Open daily. Reservations preferred but walk-ins welcome.

Mollydooker Wines

23 Coppermine Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8637 4472

What Guests Like About It: Beautiful views, seriously good wines with fun names

Mollydooker’s rise to fame happened after it launched its first vintage in 2005. While the company became well-known in the US for Australian wine, today it has created a language and a culture around its brand in Australia. It’s fun, colorful wine labels, whimsical names, and a fun atmosphere have helped develop almost a cult following. Plus, its wines are seriously delicious.

The cellar door offers a seasonal rotating menu that includes small bites and cheese, charcuterie, and produce platters that pair perfectly with its wines.

Open daily 10:00 am – 4:30 pm. Tasting fees $20 – $30 (AUD) per person. Reservations recommended.

Oliver’s Taranga

246 Seaview Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8323 8498

What Guests Like Best About It: Exceptional customer service, innovative wines

After six generations of grape growing in McLaren Vale, Oliver’s Taranga released its first estate-bottle wine in 1994. Oliver’s still sells grapes to some of the biggest names in South Australia but continues to make its own estate wines with great success.

The tasting room forges contemporary design with historic buildings. From the Brioni’s Blend, dedicated to 6 th generation cousin Brioni Oliver, to Corrina’s Shiraz Cabernet, named after winemaker Corrina Wright, to a dozen other small-batch wines, there is something for every budget and taste. You can count on knowledgeable servers and excellent service at this family-owned winery.

Open daily from 10:00 am – 4:00 pm. Tasting fees from $15 – $30 (AUD). Reservations recommended.

S. C. Pannell

60 Olivers Road, McLaren Vale

+61 8 8323 8000

Pannell produces several varieties, including Italian, Mediterranean, and non-traditional. Be sure to taste the Protero Nebbiolo and the Tempranillo Touriga blend. With two other locations and two other brand names in the “Vale,” this cellar door is a must.

The tasting room offers small bites, including a cheese platter, saucisson, and salty snacks. Open daily 11:00 am – 4:00 pm. Walk-ins are welcome or contact ahead of time for groups of 7 or more.

+61 8 8323 8414

The Magic of the McLaren Vale Wine Region

One could spend a lifetime immersed in the wonders of McLaren Vale, learning something new each day. Despite our team taking three trips and investing countless hours researching and visiting wineries in the region, there is still an abundance left to discover. Our authors have gained a unique perspective and understanding of McLaren Vales’s most exceptional producers. These journeys have served as a jumping-off point for sharing these remarkable places with others, hoping they, too, may someday experience the magic of Barossa Valley.

How can I visit wineries in McLaren Vale?

Research and Select Wineries: Begin by identifying which wineries you wish to visit. McLaren Vale is home to over 80 cellar doors, ranging from boutique family-run estates to well-known labels. Consider wineries that offer not just tastings but also tours, dining experiences, and unique offerings like blending your own wine. A mix of large and small vineyards can provide a comprehensive view of the region’s wine-making landscape. Book in Advance: For a seamless experience, it’s advisable to book your tastings and tours in advance, especially during peak seasons or for popular wineries. This ensures availability and often provides a more personalized experience. Visitation Options Self-Drive: If you prefer flexibility, driving yourself is a viable option. McLaren Vale is conveniently located about 40 minutes south of Adelaide. Renting a car allows you to explore at your own pace and visit off-the-beaten-path wineries. Ensure a designated driver is part of your plan for a safe tasting experience. Guided Tours: For those who prefer not to worry about navigation or driving, numerous guided tour options are available. These tours range from small, intimate groups to larger, more social experiences. They often include lunch and visits to selected wineries, providing a curated taste of the region. Guided tours not only offer insight into the wine-making process but also the history and culture of McLaren Vale. If we had to choose one, we suggest booking a private and guided wine tour of the region with Best Wine Tours , which begins in Adelaide. Cycling Tours: For the more adventurous, consider a bike tour through the vineyards. This eco-friendly option allows you to enjoy the stunning landscapes at a leisurely pace. Bike hire services and guided cycling tours are available, combining physical activity with wine tasting. Escapegoat Adventures offers the most highly-rated wine & bike tour in McLaren Vale . Seasonal Considerations: Timing your visit can greatly affect your experience. Harvest season (February to April) is a fascinating time to see the wineries in full swing, but it’s also busier. Spring and autumn offer pleasant weather and the landscape’s vibrant colors. Local Delicacies: Many wineries in McLaren Vale also offer local produce platters, cheese boards, and on-site restaurants to pair their wines with regional delicacies, so be on the lookout! Stay in the Region: Consider spending a few nights in McLaren Vale to fully immerse yourself in the wine culture. Accommodations range from cozy B&Bs to luxury lodges, many of which are nestled among vineyards as we discussed earlier in this travel guide.

12 of the best McLaren Vale wineries to suit every taste

Alexis Buxton-Collins

Travel Journalist

28 April 2023

Time

With more than 80 cellar doors to choose from, there’s something to suit every taste in Australia’s greenest wine region.

Despite a winemaking heritage that stretches back to 1839, McLaren Vale ’s progressive culture has kept it at the forefront of the industry for more than 170 years. The region leads the country in certified organic and biodynamic vineyards, and local growers have helped to pioneer southern Mediterranean varietals that are well suited to the warm coastal climate.

More than 40 distinct soil types give rise to an astonishing spectrum of flavour profiles, and that variety is mirrored in the cellar door offerings ; the best wineries in McLaren Vale encompass everything from tiny boutique operations to the biggest names in Australian wine.

1. Yangarra

The elevated vineyards of Blewitt Springs produce some of the most sought-after fruit in the Vale, and Yangarra sits at the premium end of that sub-region . Powerful, complex grenache is the undisputed hero of the High Sands experience that includes a walk through the vineyards, barrel samples and a vertical tasting featuring James Halliday’s 2020 wine of the year.

Yangarra Estate is surrounded by lush grape vines.

The charming cellar door next to a small lake also hosts dedicated grenache tastings (with a grenache blanc, rose and several single-vineyard expressions) alongside several other southern Rhône varietals.

With a mindblowing 30 wines available for tasting, it’s worth allowing plenty of time to visit this sleek cellar door (if you like dogs, add an extra few minutes to play with Dave the bear-like groodle).

Half a dozen shiraz expressions showcase the region’s geological diversity, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Don’t miss the fabulously floral Sixmo chardonnay or juicy primitivo, and if you’re looking for something utterly unique to bring home, the sherry-like Vale is a vermentino that’s been kept under flor for more than three years.

While some wineries cater to everyone, others narrow their scope in the quest for perfection. Bekkers definitely falls into the latter category.

Viticulturist Toby Bekkers and his winemaking partner Emmanuelle make just three small batch reds (grenache, syrah and a blend of the two), along with a premier cru Chablis from Burgundy, and that attention to detail results in wines of elegance and poise that sit at the pinnacle of the craft and are perfectly matched to the sleek glass and timber tasting room.

4. Pannell Enoteca

Tasting flights like “Bianco, Blanco, Blanc (white, but with cool names)” give an idea of what to expect from this winery; an irreverent spirit and a strong emphasis on Mediterranean varietals.

Winemaker Steve Pannell is particularly fond of Portuguese grapes like tinta cao and touriga, which appears both on its own and in a variety of blends. These highly smashable wines lend themselves to extended sessions on the large cellar door deck, a prospect made even more appealing by regular pop-ups from some of Adelaide’s best restaurants.

5. Samuel’s Gorge

It’s hard to beat the location of this ridgetop cellar door, which sits in an 1853 farm shed overlooking the spectacular Onkaparinga Gorge . Drag yourself away from the views and you’ll find the cosy interior filled with antique machinery and friendly staff who are more than happy to join you for a chat while you sip their wares. With a white, rosé and chilled red for the summer, this is an especially popular destination.

You’ll be hard-pressed to find winemakers as passionate about the environment as Mike and Melissa Brown, who have planted more than 50,000 native trees and shrubs on their property.

See the benefits firsthand on a stroll through a revegetated wetland populated by kangaroos, koalas and emus, or get a taste of the action with a platter featuring saltbush, muntries and native lemongrass in the solar-powered tasting room before tasting your way through the lineup of biodynamic wines.

7. Berg Herring

Wine lovers looking to finish their day with one last tasting will find their prayers answered at this converted church, which is open until 6 every evening.

Visit in winter and you can watch the setting sun light up the magnificent seacliffs of the southern Fleurieu from one of the giant wine barrels that double as tasting pods. Emerging varietals like pecorino, touriga and nero d’avola feature heavily in the list of basket-pressed small-batch wines, which tend to be fruit-forward and ready to drink now.

8. Aphelion

It doesn’t get more personal than a tasting in the winemaker’s house , and when you visit Rob Mack you might find cats, dogs or even a small child popping in to say hi. Don’t let that distract you from the minimal intervention wines, though – he’s one of the finest grenache producers in the region and the half a dozen expressions are served in balloon-like burgundy glasses to maximise the aromatics. If you prefer the great outdoors, he also hosts back-of-the-ute tastings in a hilltop vineyard.

There are so many highlights at this gorgeous hilltop winery that it’s hard to know where to start.

The stunning views out over a mosaic of vineyards and grain paddocks are a strong contender, as is the well-tended garden that blooms year-round.

Lipsmacking estate olives and local produce are the heroes at one of the region’s best winery restaurants and if you do make it to the tasting room, you’ll find yourself sipping fiano, sangiovese and piquepoul from the winery that introduced them to the country.

10. Oliver’s Taranga

The Oliver family winemaking tradition now stretches to six generations, but recent renovations have kept this heritage-listed 1850s worker’s cottage looking fresh.

Several private tasting rooms branch off the light-filled atrium inside, while a spacious deck overlooking the 120-hectare property emits a siren call during the summer months.

11. Battle of Bosworth

Leave the car behind and take in a few lungfuls of fresh air on the Willunga Wander walking trail, which visits several cellar doors and breweries including this former chaff shed on the outskirts of Willunga.

Spend your laid-back afternoons sipping a glass of wine.

Expect a warm welcome and stiff competition for couch space from the two resident pooches as you work through a tasting lineup that consists of whatever happens to be open (usually about a dozen organic wines) and favours traditional varieties like shiraz, cabernet, chardonnay and semillon.

12. Hardy’s Tintara

With a staggering 9000 awards, this venerable winery on the main street of McLaren Vale has won it all. You can taste the greatest hits at the cellar door and get a sneak preview of the next gold medallists from the open viewing deck that looks into the working winery during vintage, or stimulate your other senses on the Tasting In The Dark experience that invites you into a candlelit cellar for a blind tasting from Hardy’s extensive back vintages.

And if you’re looking for something to do after the tasting, there’s also a gallery and artisan hub onsite.

What People Have Said...

We were lucky enough to spend the day touring McLaren Vale with Kerry (and got to meet Mr. Chook as well!) and I can't begin to express just how fabulous it was. You can see how loved the Chooks are by the local wineries, and as a result, their guests are treated with the utmost care. Our last stop was extra special, a place called Danshi Rise (an old neighbour of the Chooks). Kerry also took our box of wine to be shipped home to us in Melbourne (at no additional cost other than the shipping fee). Of all the winery tours we've done anywhere in the world, this was was extra special. Thank you Kerry!!!!

What an absolutely wonderful day we had yesterday! We asked Chook to organise & take us & 12 friends on a tour which included lunch. All of us reckon Chook went beyond our wildest dreams of a fun day which we could enjoy without having to drive. We would recommend Chook's Little Winery Tours wholeheartedly. Thanks. Neil & Mary + 12

From the moment Chook jumped out of the van to greet us we knew we were in good hands and what a fantastic day we had. He selected a great variety of vineyards and winemakers with diverse personalities which made it all the more interesting. The travel time seemed to go quickly with Chook entertaining us with lively and animated stories of his background and local history. If we get back to Adelaide, Chook will be the first on our calling list.

What a fabulous Wine Tour we had with Chook, his vast knowledge of the local Wineries and surrounding area was just amazing. So if you want to see the best McLaren Vale has to offer you won’t get better than Chooks Little Winery Tours. Highly recommend 5*

This tour went above and beyond my expectations. The initial booking of the tour is easy and efficient. Just complete the online form on their website and Chook will contact you with the booking details. The team develop a personalised itinerary and keep it relatively secret until the day of your tour. Chook’s delightful wife was our tour guide and drove us through the countryside in a roomy air conditioned van. There was only four of us on the tour and the other couple were lovely.

I would just like to say “Thank You” for an excellent service on Saturday 2 nd February.  It worked out so well having everyone transported to the Middlebrook Winery without any fuss.I will definite recommend you.   Kind Regards, Annette

Dear Chook, Once again many thanks for your professional service which went above and beyond what we expected.  I was so impressed with the way you and your team helped with all our logistics and believe that this helped make our conference a great success.  I have emailed Andreas Clark from Wine Australia this morning and asked him to arrange EFT payment of the rest of your bill today.  Andreas has confirmed that he will do so.  However please let me know if this hasn’t happened in the next few days and I will follow through. Sincerely, Vicki Waye

14 Sensational Wineries of Mclaren Vale you can’t miss

By: Author Amanda OBrien

Posted on Last updated: 17/02/2024

From the rolling hills of the Fleurieu Peninsula to the Rockpools of the Eyre peninsula, the crescendo-ing vineyards of the Barossa Valley; they all have nothing on the wineries of Mclaren Vale.

This south-central state of Australia is home to world class vineyards, wineries and cellar doors alike.

Nestled within the southern Mount Lofty Ranges lies the Mclaren Vale wine region, home to more than 80 cellar doors.

The breezes of the Fleurieu peninsula’s west and east coast allow for the perfect year long yield of fruits, warmed by the summer months producing the finest vintage of wine anywhere in the world.

Where is Mclaren Vale?

The Fleurieu Peninsula is the first of three main Peninsulas along South Australia’s southern coast line, with McLaren Vale sitting 45 minutes south of the capital city of Adelaide.

Getting here is no problem at all; with both public transport and self-drives available from Adelaide airport if you’re arriving both internationally or domestically.

Often overshadowed by the well-known Barossa Valley, the Clare Valley or the Adelaide hills, the wineries of McLaren Vale certainly hold their own. McLaren Vale is best known for Shiraz and other reds like Grenache and Mediterranean varieties like Sangiovese and Vermentino.

wineries of mclaren vale south australia

The Barossa Valley is most famous for some of Australia’s richest and heaviest reds like cabernet sauvignon. The Clare Valley is most famous for wonderful Rieslings and the Adelaide Hills for Sauvignon Blanc. So if you love red wine but like something medium bodied and love say a Malbec then McLaren Vale is for you.

For more information on the region outside of the winners, head over to the Mclaren Vale & Fleurieu Peninsula centre to learn more about what to do here.

Your guide to the Wineries of Mclaren Vale

There are literally more than 80 wineries and cellar doors here in the Mclaren vale region so getting to all of them is going to prove a challenge.

Making sure you allow yourself enough time to explore the ones you’re most keen on visiting is crucial to making the most of your time and having a good time as opposed to a quick time!

1. Down the Rabbit Hole

First and foremost from our top pick of McLaren Vale wineries, Down the Rabbit Hole .

You might recognise the owners Dom & Elise from Instagram when they travelled Australia in their VW Kombi ‘Scout’.

They have since returned to their home state of South Australia, popped out a child and opened Down the Rabbit Hole wineries.

Down the Rabbit Hole wine bottle and glass

Nestled amongst the rows of trees and vineyards, you walk into a beautifully lush green grass field lined with patterned throw rugs and cushions.

Your backdrop to the evening behind a bright orange sunset is a aqua blue double decker bus where the friendly staff host a half hour wine tasting session for you to sample the variety of wines on offer.

The wine tasting costs $10 per person however if you decide to purchase a bottle of wine then the tasting is free.

Friday evenings you can find live music on the decking outside the bar and as always a pumping and lively atmosphere with some well known musical guests to the region.

down the rabbit hole bus

Down the rabbit hole also offers exceptional a la carte options for their guests, like the longboard assortment of cheeses, biscuits, crackers, quince paste, and of course a bottle of red.

No bookings are required at any time you feel like coming down during the week, but of course if your party size is larger than 5-10 people, best to book ahead to ensure space on the lawn.

2. D’arenberg

If you’re a fan of architecture and wine, then this is the place for you

The original design of the building, which looks like a weirdly shaped cubed, levelled structure came from the concept of a puzzle; the intricacies and mystery of a puzzle evoked intrigue and curiosity, hence this peculiar but beautiful art work.

If you visit here then you are visiting one of the oldest generations of wine makers anywhere in South Australia, 4th generation to be exact.

the-cube-at-d-arenburg

D’arenberg history goes back to 1912, and the family legacy and history carries on to this day.

Inside this sculptured D’Arenberg cube you will find a wine-sensory room, a virtual fermenter and a 360 degree video room.

This one of a kind winery certainly ranks high as one of the best wineries of McLaren vale.

Aside from producing an eclectic mix of reds, whites, fortified and dessert wines, they also allow guests to book an interactive wine making experience where you can learn the subtle art of wine-making and even get to take your own blend home at the end of the day!

Their featured product of the month is a Cenosilicaphobic Cat Sagrantino Cinsault 2013, a harmonious blend of two interesting varieties.

Not to be overlooked is the sustainability target and outcomes D’arenberg hopes to achieve.

D’arenberg winery is able to reduce their carbon emissions by 30% through their solar power network.

As well as a wide range of other strategies such as natural pest and disease control, NASAA certified organic & biodynamic processes that keep their yields low whilst caring for the soil and land.

D’Arenberg also allows visitors the chance to be a wine maker for a day with their Blending Bench Experience .

3. Dowie Doole

Chief winemaker turned owner Chris Thomas has and his team have created a winery of different sorts.

Built out of old shipping containers and turned into a modern and unique open style winery, Dowie Doole certainly holds its place amongst the best wineries of McLaren vale and some of the most altruistic architecture around.

An immersive cellar door experience with amazing views; the hidden touch here is the explanation of each individual wine and the process it has undergone to be in your wine glass.

dowie-doole winery exterior

Referred to as ‘the tasting pods’ opened in the Spring of 2019 your options include building your own tasting platter from regionally sourced ingredients local to the wineries of Mclaren vale.

The idea behind Dowie Doole is the experience and journey you take through their unique selection of wines, including Chardonnay, Shiraz and Savignon Blancs.

One great thing about Dowie Doole is if you aren’t satisfied with their selection of foods, they will happily point you in the right direction.

The key varieties of the wine produced here are Shiraz, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Mediterranean Reds and whites as well as a lovely Rose to finish off.

Being so close to the Gulf of St. Vincent, the wineries of Mclaren vale provide the perfect Mediterranean type climate to ensure a long and consistent ripening period.

4. Hugh Hamilton

If you’re any kind of wine-o then you surely must be familiar with the Hugh Hamilton family of winemakers.

Because they hold the oldest, continual presence of grape growing and wine-making anywhere in the country.

Impressively, they are the 5th generation of wine-makers that were the first to plant the very first vineyards in South Australia back in 1837.

If keeping up with the jones’ is a thing, then these guys certainly didn’t listen.

They produce distinctive wines like their iconic ‘Pure Black’ Shiraz as well as their unique blends and varieties of ‘Black Ops’ Shiraz & ‘Jekyll & hyde’ Shiraz..these guys do things a little differently.

A roofed pergola at one end of the vineyard offers 270-degree views of the establishment, designed to heighten your wine tasting experience.

5. Serafino Winery

Of course no article on wine is complete without first giving praise and mention to some of the oldest wine making countries in the world, in particular Italy.

Italy is one of the oldest wine making countries on the planet, reported to date back to 4000 BC in Sicily, Serafino rests on its native laurels.

Serafino holds steadfast amongst its competitors of the wineries of Mclaren vale, with the origin story dating back to 1964.

serafino winery mclaren vale

Steve Magleiri arrived in Australia as a teenager full of dreams and energy.

58 years later Serafino is known amongst the winemakers of the Fleurieu Peninsula for their capacity to hold weddings, conferences and events as well as top-notch accommodation.

Simply put, you can get drunk and not have to drive home !

Shiraz, Chardonnay, and Sangiovese are the draw cards to this delightful winery, as are their Serafino olive oil and hand-crafted chocolates.

Serafino also has a lovely 4 star hotel – a perfect place to stay in McLaren Vale and the shortest walk to the cellar door!

6. Penny’s Hill

Located on the main road between Willunga and McLaren Vale in Ingleburne are Penny’s Hill winery estate and cellar door.

Noted for its historic Georgian 2-storey farmhouse, stables and out-buildings, this stone walled rural property is something to write home about.

Known for their blends and varieties of red wines, their finest quality french oak barrels are all hand picked prior to blending to ensure fresh, vibrant and balanced wines with an intense aroma to them.

Pennys-Hill-Cellar-Door-Lawns-and-tables

Established in 1988, Penny’s Hill spans 105 acres of estate grown fruit of McLaren Vale, and as for their white wines, they outsource their white grapes from the local vineyards of the wineries of McLaren Vale from what they call ‘estates of mates’.

If by this point you’re wined out, then why not try their Flights Gin bar and sample their MadMen gin and tonic on the lawns outside their original carriage house.

7. Bondar Wines

The Rayner Vineyard, home to pristine wine planting regions as far back as the 1950’s owned and operated back then by the Rayner family.

The wineries of Mclaren Vale are best known for their blends of Shiraz and Grenache and Bondar winery are no exception to this.

Having been awarded the James Halliday’s best new winery award in 2017, winning multiple trophies at the McLaren Vale wine shows and been named one of the Top 50 young guns of wine making in 2018, you should probably go here.

bondar wines exterior

From the owner of Bondar Wines , “For me, wine is about food, friends and family and should reflect place and enhance experience. I like my wines to be delicious, but also to be interesting; that little bit different to stand apart from the norm.”

Bondar wines offer a 45 minutes taste teasing session for $10 per person, very similar to the Down the Rabbit Hole counterparts, however, if you purchase a bottle of wine you get the taste-testing session absolutely free.

8. Wirra Wirra Vineyards

Wirra Wirra is all about fruit sourcing. They believe in “letting the fruit shine” and that wines should reflect the vineyard that spawned them. They are famous for the Wirra Wirra Church Block, one of my personal favourite red wines.

The Church Block was the first wine that the late Greg Trott produced under the Wirra Wirra brand. The name comes from one of the original vineyards next to the Bethany Church. The Church Block is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot.

9. Primo Estate

Primo Estate is one of the most well-known of the McLaren Vale wineries. Founded in 1973, Primo champions Italian wine-making techniques combined with a good dose of Australian methods. Unsurprisingly they are well known for Italian varieties like Sangiovese, their sparkling red, and outstanding olive oil.

10. Oliver’s Taranga Vineyards

This 100-hectare winery is located in the north of McLaren Vale and run by the sixth generation of the original winemakers. They grow grenache, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Oliver Taranga’ s flagship wine is the HJ Reserve Shiraz and they also have muscat and a fortified grenache.

11. Fox Creek

In 1984, Helen and Dr. Jim Watts purchased 32 hectares in McLaren Vale and became winemakers. The vineyards have black clay soils that had previously been used to plant barley. This soil bore some fantastic fruit which led to wines such as Fox Creek’s award-winning Reserve Shiraz.

12. Mitolo Wines

The Mitolo family arrived in Australia in the 1950s from their native Abruzzo in Italy. Their first wine came sometime later in 2000 with the GAM Shiraz (named after Frank Mitolo’s children). Since then, Mitolo Wines have launched 16 more wines utilising their knowledge of Italian wine varieties and techniques.

Mitolo also has a stunning restaurant called the Little Wolf Osteria that is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I love the Let Us Feed you option where chef Vincenzo will just serve you the best of what is on the menu of that day.

13. Samuel’s Gorge

Samuel’s Gorge was established by winemaker Justin McNamee in 2003. The winery is in an 1853 built farm shed and the winery and cellar door sit on a ridge that affords amazing views of the Onkaparinga National Park to the north and the ocean to the south.

samuel's gorge

Samuel’s Gorge focuses on five key varietals: Grenache, Shiraz, Mourvedre, Graciano and Tempranillo. Don’t miss their Tempranillo.

14. Alpha Box and Dice

This boutique winery has an alphabet of wine, with each letter standing for a different wine style. Alpha Box and Dice specialise in alternative and experimental varietals. They are all about small batches, vegan friendly, and keeping things focussed on the fruit.

Alpha Box and Dice hold one hour tastings and also serve cheese platters. The tasting room also has a walk-up bar which offers free tastings of a rotating list of wines.

The Wineries of McLaren Vale

No matter where within the Fleurieu Peninsula you are, most of the wineries in McLaren vale offer uniqueness to the region that is hard-pressed to match.

We recommend at least one week within the McLaren Vale region to truly appreciate the level of wine-making mastery that goes into a simple glass.

If you do have the time during your holiday, make sure you do check out the other wineries of the region, extend your horizons to the Eyre Peninsula in the West and the Yorke Peninsula somewhere in between.

Kangaroo Island in the South is also home to a smaller range of wineries and distilleries deserving of your time and attention.

How to Get to McLaren Vale and get around

McLaren Vale wine region is in the Australian state of South Australia. The region is located about 45 minutes south of the state’s capital Adelaide. Take the train from Adelaide station to Seaford station. At Seaford station organise a pick-up or hop on the 751, 751W or 756 bus for 10 minutes.

Personally, I would recommend hiring a car . Alas, Australia is a country where driving is definitely the easiest way to get around. And once you’re in McLaren Vale there is some distance between the wineries.

woman in off the shoulder top holding a glass of white wine

However, do remember that Australia has very strict drink driving laws that are heavily enforced. It is always hard to find local drivers online before a trip so I would suggest reaching out to your accommodation before you go and seeing if they have any recommendations.

The other option is to take some type of tour. I love a hop-on hop-off bus tour around wine regions and McLaren Vale has a hop-on hop-off wine bus that does pick-ups in Adelaide as well as in McLaren Vale.

There are also a wide range of McLaren Vale day trip options from Adelaide. Or check out Small Batch Wine tours who offer a wide range of tours including one focussed on sustainability.

5 Best Wineries In McLaren Vale You Need To Visit

I don’t know about anybody else but, I really like wine. I love to check out different wine regions when traveling, whether that be in California or Niagara Falls . When I first arrived in Adelaide after my Great Ocean Road trip , I moved in with a friend that lives in the Fleurieu peninsula, just a stones throw away from McLaren Vale. She was excited to show me the area since she was working as a Sous Chef at one of the wineries here. I was pretty excited to check out some of Australia’s wine regions, and fortunate enough to have a local tour guide show me the best wineries in McLaren Vale!

McLaren Vale is often overlooked in favour of it’s bigger counterpart, the Barossa Valley, but did you know that McLaren Vale is the oldest wine region in South Australia? It’s first commercial winery opened in 1839! With over 150 years of wine making under it’s belt, McLaren Vale is one of Australia’s premiere wine regions.

With the climate of Mclaren Vale mirroring that of the mediterranean, you’ll find many varietals that are found in the Mediterranean region, such as Tempranillo and Zinfandel.

The McLaren Vale region covers over 7500 hectares of vineyards, which means there’s more than enough wineries to explore. Whether you only have one day or want to turn your wine tasting experience into a weekend away, you’ll find way more beyond the cellar door.

A City Girl Outside contains affiliate links. If you decide to make a purchase through these links, I will earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Thanks for reading!

How To Get To Mclaren Vale

McLaren Vale is a 45 minute car journey from Adelaide. Public transport is not an option for visiting this area from Adelaide city centre. However if you are staying in the Fleurieu Peninsula, you may be able to get a bus into McLaren Vale town centre.

Visiting Mclaren Vale Via Tours

If you are staying in Adelaide city or Glenelg, day trips to McLaren Vale are easy to access and you don’t need to have a designated driver – so everyone can drink!

If you are staying for the weekend and need to get around McLaren Vale, consider the Hop-On-Hop-Off tour option or touring the area by bicycle.

Where To Stay In Mclaren Vale

The nice thing about McLaren Vale is that there are no big chain hotels or resorts here, you won’t find any Holiday Inns, Marriotts or Hyatts. I think this really gives the town a much more authentic feel, you know that when you book a place to stay you are supporting local.

There are many places to stay in McLaren Vale and most of them will be b’n’bs. For that true country experience, I think staying on a vineyard itself is the way to go!

1) Serafino Wines offers chalet style accommodation onsite the estate, which means the restaurant and cellar door are all within walking distance! Even better no one has to drive home and you can wine taste to your hearts content. The rooms at Serafino are clean and modern and look out onto the estates gardens which are perfect for taking a walk and exploring the surroundings.

2) Hotel California Road at Inkwell Wines – If you’re really looking for some peace and quiet during your time in McLaren Vale check out the Hotel California Road . This secluded micro hotel is adults only and each floor is a private king suite. The rooms feature a sharp clean interior and full length windows that showcase the vineyards.

1) Down The Rabbit Hole

Down the Rabbit Hole is a relatively new winery in McLaren Vale. The moment I stepped foot into this small bohemian paradise I knew I would love it. Everything about this place is just so… me .

As soon as you approach the cellar door you are greeted with an outdoor boho seating area, complete with rugs and pillows on the floor, and small wooden tables that sit about ten inches from the ground. A swing chair hangs from one of the trees and the sound of laughter fills the area. There is an indoor seating area just next to the outdoor area which is just as whimsical. On certain Fridays throughout the month you’ll also find live music here.

Down the Rabbit Hole is owned by Elise and Dominic Cook , and is one is the smaller boutique cellar doors in the region. While you are here you don’t feel like you are at a winery, but more like a friends house who just happens to own a vineyard!

Dom and Elise have done such a wonderful job with the launch of this winery. The cellar door is so unique, it’s an old double decker bus that they have renovated into this wonderful pastel blue bar on wheels.

And I haven’t even gotten to the wine yet.

Down the Rabbit Hole features five wines in their current inventory. Each wine is adorned with an illustration that reflects a prominent part of their journey “ down the rabbit hole ”. From it’s inception to their very first pop up cellar door party. On the back of every bottle you’ll find a poem written by Dom and Elise:

For Friends & Lovers a Place Exists

Another World of Joy & Bliss

Beyond The Stars, Space & Time

To Enter, Show the Secret Sign

The Moon is Bright, Revive Your Soul

Come Join Us Down The Rabbit Hole

Each line represents a different moment in their journey as well as each bottle of wine in the collection.

What I loved most about Down the Rabbit Hole was it’s laid back vibe. During the wine tasting, everything about the bottle and the background of this winery was explained to us , giving this experience a more intimate feel.

Wine tasting at Down the Rabbit Hole will cost $10 per person and if you choose to purchase a bottle of wine the $10 gets deducted from the price of the bottle.

1) Friends & Lovers Rosé

2) Down The Rabbit Hole 2017 Shiraz

3) Down The Rabbit Hole 2019 Tempranillo

Down the Rabbit Hole is one of the newer wineries in McLaren Vale and is definitely worth a visit

2) Alpha Box & Dice

Alpha Box and Dice and is another of Mclaren Vale’s quirky wineries. This winery was established in 2008 and you’ll find their wines on plenty of wine lists around South Australia.

The cellar door is an old metal shed appropriately embellished with the Alphabet and pair of dice. Once inside the cellar door the quirky factor gets pushed up a notch. Old mismatched vintage furniture and peculiar wares fill the inside seating area. With such an unusual cellar door, it seems only fitting that the dump bucket here is a vintage bed pan.

Alpha Box & Dice uses the alphabet as their inspiration behind this winery using weird and macabre names such as “Dead Winemakers Society” and “Golden Mullet Fury”.

Wine tasting at Alpha Box and Dice is free and you can try as many wines as you like. Needless to say I left here feeling rather tipsy…

1) Tarot Pinot Grigio

2) Dead Winemakers Society Red

3) Hercules Shiraz

Alpha Box & Dice is one of the most popular wineries in McLaren Vale, it's also very unique!

3) Serafino Wines

Serafino Wines is one of the bigger cellar doors in McLaren Vale. Upon driving into the estate you’ll pass by a long perfectly groomed driveway that will lead you to the main building and parking lot. Everything about this winery screams luxury. Sitting just in front of the cellar door is a pond with a fountain and in bold letters the word “SERAFINO”

The winery on the day I visited was empty, this was the week just before lockdown in Australia so we had the entire place to ourselves. The wine tasting room is large, bright and airy. I would imagine on a regular day there would be tables in this area too. We were greeted by a lady at the bar and we dove into the wine varietals on offer.

Serafino has a large collection of wine so it was hard to choose which to taste, the reds were a must and didn’t disappoint.

Serafino offers two tasting flight options; the Discover Flight which is 5 tasting of your choosing for $10 or there is the Premium Flight for $39.

1) Goose Island Rosé

2) Black Label Shiraz

3) Serafino GSM

4) D’Arenberg Wines

Although there are many smaller wineries in McLaren Vale, no wine tasting trip to McLaren Vale would be complete without visiting the famous D’Arenberg Wines . One of the biggest winemakers in the region, and undeniably one of the most recognisable cellar doors in Australia.

The cube that D’Arenberg is famous for houses it’s cellar door along with a casual eatery and alternative realities museum. Entry to the cube and wine tasting experience is $15. If you’re celebrating a special occasion or just want to learn more about wine varietals, D’Arenberg offers the Blending Bench experience where you’ll get to experiment with flavours and take home your very own blend.

There are several restaurants at the D’Arenberg estate. If you’re looking for something extra special, D’Arry’s Verandah Restaurant offers a full service menu while Polly’s inside the cube is a casual eatery that doesn’t require reservations.

1) D’Arry’s Original

2) The Sticks And Stones Tempranillo Blend

3) The Broken Fishplate Sauvignon Blanc

D'arenberg is one of the best wineries in McLaren Vale and features a museum and restaurant inside it's cube cellar door

5) Dowie Doole

Dowie Doole is another new cellar door in the area. What I really love about this place is it’s innovative design. The cellar door is made up of 3 shipping containers affectionately known as “the tasting pod” that have been transformed into a wine tasters paradise. The tasting pod uses solar power and transforms to “open up” on either side.

The tasting options range from curated flights to build your own, from their estate range all the way through to the reserve range.

McLaren Vale is famous for their reds, so naturally my favourite wines at the Dowie Doole cellar door were the C.T Shiraz and B.F.G Grenache.

Tasting flights were around the $15 mark and again if you decide to purchase a bottle this gets deducted from the price.

While we were here we got chatting to Brenda, who just so happens to be from Whistler! Interestingly enough, we both worked at one of the restaurants here in Whis and so she knew my old boss! Talk about living in a small world!

1) Estate Sauvignon Blanc

2) Estate Cabernet Sauvignon

3) 2017 C.T. Shiraz

The Dowie Doole Cellar Door in McLaren Vale is made from refurbished shipping containers

6) Big Easy Radio

Big Easy Radio is a winery a little further out from McLaren Vale and one to look out for on weekends. This place is really unique, I know I’ve said that about almost every winery on this list but this cellar door is like no other. It has it’s own vibe going on, a bit on the hippy side and if you haven’t noticed yet, I’m really into that. Big Easy Radio aims to bring wine to those who wouldn’t normally drink it. It’s based around the laid back Aussie beach lifestyle.

This small shack sitting just off the highway near Aldinga doesn’t look like much as you pass by but on the weekends this place really comes to life. If you’re staying in McLaren Vale for the weekend, this is the place to to enjoy live music on a Friday night and chill out as the sun sets over this beautiful peninsula.

1) Drink The Sun 2019 Rosé

2) Perpetual Holidaze 2017 Grenache

3) Forget Babylon Touriga Malbec

These wineries all look so amazing! Big Easy Radio looks especially unique. Pinning for when I can visit!

This winery is right up my alley! I absolutely adore all of your photos here too; I just pinned this for future inspiration!

I totally need to hit up this wine region when I eventually visit Australia! The Down the Rabbit Hole winery looks so epic as an old bus. I love this guide! 🙂

I love wine too! So you are a girl after my own heart! I haven’t been to McLaren Vale but you have provided a list of many inspiration places to visit. I’d particularly like to see The Cube.

These wineries have all something unique, I’m not a wine lover, but would love to visit these just for the ambiance and the buildings.

I just adore vineyards and wine tastings and this post bought alive so many of my memories of the 4-5 wine tours that I have indulged in. Really loved your pins 🙂

Not sure where you get the idea that there is no public transport from Adelaide to McLaren Vale. There are 4 trains an hour from Adelaide Central Train Station to Seaford Train station, the journey takes about 45 minute , then take the connecting 751 bus to McLaren Vale ( a 10 minute journey). It drops you at the Visitor centre or in the main street. All up the journey will take about an hour.

Oh good point. I was thinking of direct transport routes. I knew the bus left from Seaford/Aldinga/Sellicks Beach area but never even thought of the train From Adelaide Central.

There are so many great offerings in the region here. It’s a shame though that some places that don’t even make their own wine and aren’t a part of the community get the top of your list. Great as a branding and marketing exercise but next time you come through check out some of the many cellar doors where you can actually meet the people who make the wine.

Thanks John, I definitely will!

I was very sad to have to leave Australia so I didn’t get a chance to get to as many wineries as I’d have liked. But once I get the chance to return I will be returning to this region!

14 Unique Winery Tours From Around The World

A huge part of the appeal of visiting a winery is being able to taste the wines on-site, often close to the vineyards that produced the grapes. Seeing the environment responsible for the wine in your glass really ties the whole experience together, especially if you can visit the cellar and see some of the winemaking facilities. While that's already a fun outing for any oenophile, some wineries take it up a notch and offer tours that transform the day into an unforgettable experience.

With wineries often located in regions with striking surroundings, it's no surprise that many organized visits highlight the features that make these locations one-of-a-kind. Whether viewing vineyards from up in the sky, pairing wine with creative elements, or showcasing the natural wonders that make up the landscapes, there are plenty of ways to expand your love of wine beyond the glass. Of course, you'll also get to taste the wine as you explore these unique winery tours from around the world.

Hot Air Balloon Ride At Bodegas Muga (Haro, Spain)

Start your tour of Bodegas Muga in Haro, Spain with a bird's-eye view after being whisked off to a hot air balloon awaiting inflation. Along with a group of visitors, you'll assist in the pre-departure process before taking off above the vineyards and surrounding areas. For a premium price, opt for the private package and soar high with only your select group of guests.

Located in the region of Rioja, Bodegas Muga has no shortage of dazzling landscapes to view. Take in the rolling hills, plateaus, endless vineyards, and unforgettable beauty of one of Spain's most prized winemaking regions . Considering the lack of steering capacities, your point of arrival will be up to the whims of the wind and the hot air balloon. Nevertheless, once you're back on the ground you'll be transported to the winery for a tasting and optional guided tour. Tie the day together by sipping on top Rioja wines, made with native tempranillo, garnacha, mazuelo, graciano, macabeo, and malvasia grape varieties.

VR Winery Visit At Campo Alla Sughera (Bolgheri, Italy)

Bolgheri is famous in Tuscany for being home to the region's prestigious Super Tuscan wines, primarily made with international rather than regional grape varieties. Now, Campo alla Sughera is introducing an immersive virtual reality experience that goes beyond viticultural innovation. Whereas some wineries offer the chance to take part in the laborious harvest, this tour provides insider knowledge without the backbreaking work.

Simply don a VR visor and witness the many stages of a vineyard and winery during harvest time, from hand-picking the juicy grapes on the vines to transferring them to the tanks in the cellar. Additionally, guests will be guided through the physical winery, cellar, and vineyards to see where the magic truly takes place. Finally, the tour ends with a tasting that includes four of Campo alla Sughera's top wines made with varieties like cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and merlot, offering visitors a peak experience from start to finish.

Icewine Experience At Inniskillin (Niagara, Canada)

Although it's not exclusive to Canada, the country's viticultural repertoire is commonly associated with icewine. In Niagara, Ontario, Inniskillin is arguably responsible for much of this international clout, winning a top award at Vinexpo in Bordeaux, France in 1991. Since, the winery continues to produce exceptional icewine (and plenty of other styles as well), offering an icewine experience for guests who want to take a closer look at the chilly process.

To understand everything you need to know about icewine , taste a flight of three wines, sampling them in assorted glasses to savor the elements that make each one distinct. Sparkling icewine and assorted grape varieties provide a broader tasting experience for novices and aficionados alike. Additionally, a few tasty morsels accompany the wine samples, highlighting some of the many ways of pairing icewine. Considering the premium price of a bottle of icewine, partaking in this tour is a valuable way to discover what you love most about this unique style.

Underground Cellar Labyrinth At Cricova Winery (Moldova)

Anyone with a fear of confined spaces might want to skip out on Cricova Winery's underground cellar labyrinth tour. The Moldovan winery is home to what it describes as a "subterranean city" with streets holding endless rows of wine casks. Designed following extensive limestone excavation (to build a neighboring city), the roads are almost 300 feet below ground, making it all the more exciting to venture down during the guided tour. The maze of lanes stretches for around 75 miles, holding over one million wine bottles.

The tour makes its way through segments of the route by transporting guests on a small train and can be combined with a wine-tasting flight in one of the underground tasting rooms. You might even catch sight of exclusive wine collections belonging to Putin and other political figures. Cricova is known for its traditional method of sparkling wine, but you can also taste wines made with cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, sauvignon blanc, and muscat.

Blend Your Own Wine At d'Arenberg (McLaren Vale, Australia)

A little work never hurt. At d'Arenberg in McLaren Vale, South Australia, winery guests get to step into the role of a winemaker at The Blending Bench. The real heavy lifting is done for you ahead of time, as the grapes have already been harvested, pressed, and fermented. Instead, you'll be presented with three samples of shiraz wine to blend at your discretion. McLaren Vale is home to some of the top shiraz vines in Australia, so you'll be working with the best.

Aside from highlighting the nuances of the different base wines, the process will finetune your senses and assist you in identifying the qualities you prefer in your wine. There's plenty of sipping involved as you hone in on the individual characteristics. You won't be going home empty-handed, either. Once you've completed your custom blend, it's transferred to a 750-milliliter bottle that you can take home to enjoy at your leisure. If you want to expand on this experience, pair it with an eight-course dinner with wine at the on-site restaurant.

Underwater Cellar Dive At Edivo Vina (Hrvatska, Croatia)

Scuba diving and wine don't usually go hand in hand, but at Edivo Vina in Hrvatska, Croatia, an underwater cellar awaits exploration. The winery doesn't age all of its wine in the Adriatic Sea, but a selection of  Croatian coral wine is aged in the watery depths . Made with local Croatian grapes, the wine is transferred to glass bottles and stored in amphora vessels before being submerged in steel cages around 60-80 feet below the surface and nestled in a shipwreck. The cool, stable climate and tranquil setting appear to be optimal for the wine's maturation process.

Following a short boat ride to the site, certified divers can venture down to the cellar with a PADI instructor. All of the required equipment is available for rent, making it a fun way to dive and see an underwater winery on the same tour. Following the dive, a mixed selection of wines (aged above and below water) is available for tasting along with light snacks at Edivo Wine Bar.

Art Museum Tasting At Hess Persson Estates (Napa, California)

For many oenophiles, wine is an art, so it makes sense to combine a sensory tasting experience with a visual arts one. At Hess Person Estates in Napa Valley, the two come together seamlessly with the on-site art gallery. Art lovers can tour the Hess Collection Contemporary Art Museum with the director of art, who spent dozens of years familiarizing himself with the pieces alongside the founder. Engage with the dynamic works in a small group as you explore the various meanings and sensations that arise.

Once the visual arts tour is complete, you will be treated to an educational wine-tasting experience with one of the viticultural experts. With vineyards located on Mount Veeder and surrounding areas, the wines are all infused with the complexities and nuances of the varied terrains. Try top-tier cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, and chardonnay, among other well-executed classic varieties.

Dog Hike And Tasting At Kunde Family Winery (Sonoma, California)

If you like to bring your four-legged bestie everywhere you go, then schedule a visit to Kunde Family Winery. Located in Sonoma, California, the fifth-generation family-owned winery is the perfect place for a hike followed by wine tasting. It's worth noting the hike lasts around four hours and takes you through a valley and into the Mayacamas Mountain range, so skip the winery-chic fashion and lace up your hiking boots. Described as "moderately strenuous," you'll want to ensure your dog is up for the activity, too.

Nevertheless, the beautiful views make the effort well worth it, and the included wine tasting and lunch provide you with plenty of sustenance to refuel after the hike. Options like viognier, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, merlot, syrah, and zinfandel are just some of the varieties you can pair with your meal. Aside from working out your body, you'll also work out your mind as you learn about the viticultural and winemaking practices in the vineyards and cellar. Dog lovers will be pleased to know that part of the tour proceeds are allocated to local dog rescue projects.

Trek With Llamas At Divine Llama Vineyards (East Bend, North Carolina)

If you don't have a dog to bring to your winery outing, consider heading to Divine Llama Vineyards in East Bend, North Carolina. The farm is home to the largest population of llamas in the Southeast, making it an excellent spot to better acquaint yourself with the furry animals. The tour consists of about two hours of hiking in mixed terrain, passing forests, rolling hills, and a creek. You'll be hiking with llamas in tow, with opportunities to feed them and snap some pictures to commemorate the moment.

The hike finishes back at the winery where you'll get to sample the wines. Some classic varieties like merlot and cabernet franc are featured, as well as hybrid wine grapes that are better suited for the climate  and other fruits like blackberries and peaches. The winery regularly hosts local food trucks with assorted bites, or feel free to pack a picnic and make a day out of your visit to Divine Llama Vineyards.

Tasting In A Bunker At Château Siran (Bordeaux, France)

You might associate Bordeaux, France, with some of the most prestigious wineries in the world, but it's also the location of an anti-atomic bunker built during the Cold War that now stores tens of thousands of bottles dating as far back as the early 1900s. At Château Siran, a family-owned winery in the Margaux appellation, visitors can partake in a vertical tasting of three of the winery's vintages in an underground bunker. For escape room enthusiasts, an alternate tour offers an "escape game" experience in the bunker, highlighting its armor-like characteristics.

Château Siran wines consist of a blend of cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and petit verdot. The latter is often featured in smaller quantities in Bordeaux, but its notable presence here adds an edge to the Siran blend. A vertical tasting allows guests to taste the evolution of the wine over the years, adding a historical layer to the tour that mirrors the setting. If you tend to feel claustrophobic in enclosed areas, skip the underground visit and savor the wines in the tasting room.

Horseback Ride And Tasting At Tenuta Torciano (Tuscany, Italy)

Natural landscapes and wineries go hand in hand, so it's no surprise that many vineyard tours take advantage of the scenery. At Tenuta Torciano in Tuscany, guests can go horseback riding in the surrounding hills of the Chianti region. Located close to the medieval town of San Gimignano, the excursion is the perfect outing for wine, nature, and history aficionados. The ride lasts about an hour, allowing visitors to experience the serene backdrop of the vineyards.

After dismounting, guests are provided with wine samples and Tuscan appetizers as they learn about the various facets of local winemaking. The Italian geographical region is most known for the sangiovese grape, and at Tenuta Torciano you can taste it in various DOCG wines such as Chianti Classico, Brunello di Montalcino, and Morellino di Scansano. Super Tuscan blends made with international grapes like cabernet sauvignon and merlot are available as well, along with the local white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano DOCG. A classic wine and food pairing -- including charcuterie, cheese, and a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar -- ensures both foodies and oenophiles will find something they love.

Most Instagrammable Wine Tour At Trius Winery (Niagara, Canada)

At Trius Winery in Niagara, Ontario, wine lovers can embark on an experience touted as "the most Intagrammable winery tour on the planet." Granted, an existing interest in Instagram and a perfectly curated design and setting will boost your overall enjoyment of the visit, but it's not a prerequisite.

#TheTriusTour takes winery-goers through an art installation paired with wine samples. Taste the rosé, made with gamay and syrah grapes, in the floral Rosé Lounge overlooking the vineyards. Then, make your way to the Sparkling House, where you can sit in a swing, made to mimic the cage on the cork of a bottle of bubbly. Don't miss out on the Bubble Tub as you sip on the assorted selection of traditional method sparkling wines and finish the tour at the classy Brut Bar. It's not just a photo-op either; guides are available to answer any questions regarding winemaking and the wines, rounding out the Canadian winery experience from start to finish.

Eco Wine Safari At Avondale Wine (Paarl, South Africa)

South Africa is a hot spot for safari tourism, and at Avondale Wine in Paarl, visitors can take part in a different spin on the classic. Here, guests can enjoy a leisurely tour of the vineyards from the comfort of a tractor-drawn cart during the Eco Wine Safari. After sipping on a glass of MCC (Methode Cap Classique), South Africa's premium traditional method sparkling wine, climb on board to explore the vineyards as you learn about the viticultural practices at Avondale Wine. Taste a range of wines within steps of the vines that grew the fruit for a close-up look at the interaction between wine and its terroir.

Continue the tour in the cellars, where you'll see Avondale's gravity-flow method for transferring wine to underground tanks. Upon returning to the Tasting Gallery, pick up a bottle of your favorite sample or try something new from the selection, which includes grape varieties such as chenin blanc, viognier, roussanne, grenache, syrah, and plenty more. The winery also features a changing art exhibit, providing guests with a full spectrum of experiences during the tour.

Helicopter Tour At Seppeltsfield Wines (Barossa, Australia)

If you want to experience a winery from up above, a helicopter is the most efficient mode of transport. At Seppeltsfield Winery in Australia's Barossa Valley, guests can hop on a helicopter ride and survey the vineyards from the sky. Depending on the tour you book, you'll fly for about half an hour, overseeing the vines and surrounding areas as you take in the valley's natural wonders complete with rolling hills and palm trees. Considering its proximity to other wineries, you'll get your fill of bird's-eye vineyard views.

Once you're back at the winery, make your way to the tasting room to sample a flight of wines. Seppeltsfield grows a wide range of varieties, including white grapes like riesling and vermentino and red grapes like Nero d'Avola, grenache, and shiraz -- the darling of Barossa. While you're on-site, take advantage of the multitude of ongoing projects at the estate, including a cooperage, a craft and design studio gallery, and a soap factory making raw soap and skin products. With so much to do, you might as well stay the night at The Lodge at Seppeltsfield to make the most of it.
