Maeklong Railway in Samut Songkram, Thailand

We know that, at least at first glance, many markets in Thailand look the same. But one that definitely stands out is the Maeklong Railway Market. Why? Because it has a train running through the middle of it several times a day. Right down the middle and close enough to touch. Only in Thailand!

Like any other day at the Maeklong Railway Market

What You’ll Find at the Maeklong Train Market

This market has everything that we’ve come to know and love in Thai markets. Its stalls have displays of fruits, veggies, meats, seafood, as well as sweet snacks, clothing, and flowers.

A charming little warning bell goes off over the speaker system just a few minutes before the train comes. Within a few minutes of receiving the warning, vendors pull back their specially designed awnings before the train comes, sometimes only moments before. That’s why the market is locally known as the Talat Rom Hoop (ตลาดร่มหุบ) which translates into “Market Umbrella Close.”

Vegetables lay on the train tracks

The train’s fog horn announces its arrival just before it rounds the bend. Now that’s a sound you can’t ignore.

The coolest thing about this market is that it adjusts itself and perfectly encapsulates the train as it rolls through. The awnings are pulled back only as far as necessary. The baskets of fruits and vegetables are shifted just enough as to not be sliced by the metal wheels.

First Time Visitor’s 7-Day Guide to Bangkok

This week-long itinerary is a collaboration of the best things to do in Thailand’s capital city plus our personal recommendations for where to stay in Bangkok, best restaurants, transportation, and more.

Make the Most Out of Your Visit to the Maeklong Railway Market

Whether you’re capturing videos or photos, or dare we say taking selfies, here are a few things to keep in mind to best prepare for your visit.

Preparation Tips

  • It’s quite shady due to the collaborative efforts of a hundred or so awnings, so make sure your camera is set for low light.
  • Bring a fan and some water. This market goes in a single path along the tracks, and although it does branch off to the sides from time to time, there is almost no cross breeze and it gets hot.
  • Arrive early. Or at least, give enough time to walk down the tracks before the next train comes. The perk is that farther you walk, the fewer people there are.
  • The main entrance is crowded. Be mindful of the produce that is near ground level and let other visitors exit the market before trying to go in.
  • Although this isn’t a fast-moving train, it’s a no-brainer to stay clear of the tracks when the train is coming. Don’t stand on or lean over the tracks to get “the perfect shot” or you may get perfectly smushed.

Shoppers at the Maeklong Railway Market

The train goes from the Ban Laem Station (in Bangkok) to the Maeklong Station (just down the tracks from the market) four times per day and in the return direction four times. So, there are eight opportunities every day to watch the market vendor’s umbrellas close and make room for the train to come down the tracks.

Maeklong Railway Market Train Schedule 2018

These are the times the train is scheduled to pass through the market. This is, of course, give or take a few minutes for delays.

How to Get to the Maeklong Railway Market

The Maeklong Railway Market (ตลาดแม่กลอง) is about 60 kilometers away from Bangkok. It’s roughly a 1.5-hour drive past the Motorway 9 (Kanchanaphisek) Toll Road, which is the outer ring highway running around the outskirts of the city.

Tour Guide, Private Car, or Public Van

The most convenient way to get to the market is going on a tour. We like that  Take Me Tour  has several tour options (group and private) that provide day trips to the Maeklong Train Market and nearby floating markets. They’ll pick you up from your hotel in a comfy air-conditioned car, treat you to lunch, and their guide will show you where all the best places to sightsee are.

You can also book a private taxi . Your driver will pick you up from your hotel and take you directly to the front steps of the market, wait for you while you explore the market, and thenreturn you to your hotel at the end of the day.

We also recommend taking a public van , which goes from the Sai Tai Kao Pinklao Bus Station to the Maeklong Train Market several times per day. It’s easy to book your tickets online using the form below. Prices start at 90 THB per person.

If you’re comfortable driving in Thailand, rent a car to get there. Your car’s GPS will be able to pick up on the market’s exact location using Google Maps. It’s just down the street from the Maeklong Railway Station, which is the last stop along the Maeklong Railway Line.

If You Want to Ride the Train

For a completely different perspective, ride the train through the Maeklong Railway Market. Afterward, get off, watch the train leave the market as you stand on the sidelines, and then catch a train back to Bangkok later that day.

Your best option is to catch the train departing from the Wongwian Yai Station in Bangkok at 6:45 am on the Maeklong Line. You’ll take a 1-hour ride to the Mahachai Station, get off, and then cross the river on a ferry from the Mahachai Pier to the Tha Chalom Pier.

Get on the 8:05 am train at the Ban Laem Station and about 1-hour and 40 minutes later you will pass through the Maeklong Railway market (scheduled arrival at 9:45 am.)

You can get off the train, walk into the market, and then watch from the sidelines as the 10:20 am departing train (the one you were just on) rolls through. Stay a few hours, grab lunch, and then watch as the next train arrives at 1:45 pm. This is the one you’ll need to board to begin your journey back to Bangkok, which departs from the Maeklong Railway Station at 2:30 pm.

Train36.com does a great job listing details about where the Wongwiang Yai Station is in Bangkok, how to get there, the prices, and the Mae Klong Line train timetables.

This market is a one-of-a-kind place to experience and particularly easy to reach since it’s close to Bangkok. Try it out if you have a day to spare and let us know about your adventure.

Map of the Maeklong Railway Market

The Maeklong Railway Market is in the Muang Samut Songkhram District, which hugs the Gulf of Thailand’s coastline southwest of Bangkok. The location is the western point (green) on the map.

Extremely helpful…..thank you!

the train schedule has changed for 2019…

Thanks, Stan. Would you be so kind and provide the times? That would be helpful :)

Hi Chris and Angela! thank for sharing all the info :) We’re planning on staying one night in Samut Sokhram to see the railway market and the floating market nearby. Is town close to the railway market? Cheers!

The railway is in ‘Samut Songkhram City’ (the capital of the province), and the province itself is really tiny, so you won’t have to travel too far. Have fun!

This place seems worth exploring. I heard that tourists need to go Sai Tai Mai terminal, a new place to catch the minivan. Or are there still operating in Victoria Monument under the Expressway?

Also if want to visit Amphawa Floating Market, are they open only on Friday and weekends?

Can’t answer your first paragraph without doing some serious research. We went in a private vehicle so we’re not sure. As far as the Amphawa Floating Market, yes, its only open on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Have fun!

Great write-up! We just did this and it was incredible!

Hi, I will be in Hua Hin over the weekend. How far is this market from Hua Hin town? Is it better if I were to visit this market on my way from Hua Hin to Bangkok?

The train market is much closer to Bangkok (about 1 hour southwest of the city outskirts) compared to Hua Hin. Go there only if you are already on your way to Bangkok – don’t make a special trip because it’s a bit far for that!

May I know roughly when is the best time to leave bangkok city by car in order to catch the train passing by the market in the morning? What is the arrival or departing times because I cannot seem to get the fixed times?

We list the train arrivals and departures in a table above the map in this article. The drive to the market is roughly around an hour. You can also take the train there. Have fun!

For your info: The last train arrives 17:40 at maeklong and not at 18:22 as you mentioned. Please change the website

Thanks for telling us this. Much appreciated! Timetable updated.

Hey! love your article! i do have a few questions!

Do i have to book the tickets for the train ride beforehand or can i just get it on the spot? Is it a two-way train ticket?

THANK YOU!:)

Yup, you can get it on the spot. Have fun!

I was at this market early last Saturday! I am an exchange student here in Thailand for the next year. I really enjoying go to all the different kinds of markets Thailand has to offer. Is there a market that has stuck out to you the most that you would recommend going to?

Close to Bangkok? One we really liked was Pak Klong Talat Market not far from the N6 Pier (Memorial Bridge). Sadly, a portion of the market has been knocked down for condos/modern businesses. But we think the Yodpiman Flower Market portion is still there. Have fun exploring!

Hi, IS there any good seafood to recommend there ? how about a hotel near the spot ?

Why yes! We’ve been to the Baan Kor Pai restaurant not far from the Maeklong Train Market. Delicious! (we wrote about it in this post about Samut Songkhram ). As far as places to stay, we’d stay at this resort the next time we visit. Have a great trip!

Any advise on tour companies to assist with the transportation to & from the city?

Thanks for asking – we do! We recommend Nat from YourThaiGuide.com . She has a team of personable guides that can take you out to the Meaklong Train Market, tell you its history, find a good spot for lunch, and recommend any other sites in the area. Send her a message and see what she can do for you. Have fun!

Is the market open every day or just weekends?

Heard from my friend said this market is closed down. Can i know still open? Cause i plan to go this month end.

It was closed from May 2015 until April 2016. It’s open now though!

Hey i like your post about the railroad market. I just went there. My friend and I have both travelled for 5 years and are beginning bloggers and are currently in Chang Mai! My site is wildkiwi.org and my friends is still in the making. Would you been open to meeting for a coffee here sometime in the next week????? Would love to meet you guys and share stories. We have travelled to Greenland, Africa, Asia, Europe, Antarctica and North America. And Im from NEw Zealand. Let us know if you have time to meet. Chris and Garaceie

New Zealand is one of the few countries we’d like to visit one day! Glad to hear that someone has been back to the railway market since it closed last year. We will be leaving in a few days to do the dreaded visa run and until then trying to wrap up some responsibilities before being out of town for a week. Thanks for reaching out, though :)

It looks like I missed a market in Bangkok, this looks cool too. Some other good markets in Bangkok are Kwan Riem floating market, Rod Fai market (train market) and Bangnamphung floating market, all 3 of these markets are way off the tourist trail too.

Wow, great suggestions. Well worth checking out the next time we’re in town. We’re always up for visiting a good market!

owh crap!!!… I am going to Bangkok this weekend and the railway line will be closed then… :(

Yeah, it was news to us, too! It sucks that we had just written this post and then just a few weeks late found out they were closing. :/

Such a cool market. Can imagine the liveliness and energy there. I live in Thailand but still haven’t gotten the chance to check it out. Hope to soon though. Fantastic pictures! Glad you guys didn’t get perfectly smushed.. Lol! Great post :)

haha no smushing this time around. We had seen and heard about it so much before and during our time here in Thailand, so it was really cool to see it up close. We had no idea how close it was to Bangkok!

Maeklong Railway Market | An Easy Bangkok Day Trip (2023 Update)

Train passing through the Maeklong Railway Market

What's In This Guide?

Maeklong railway market bangkok, thailand.

It’s no secret that I love exploring markets around Bangkok. There are so many to choose from. You’ll find floating markets, street markets, night markets and, even railway markets!

The Maeklong Railway Market is one of Bangkok’s most unique attractions. It is truly a must-visit destination.

What makes the Maeklong Railway Market unique is that it’s located right on top of a railway line, and trains run right through the market a few times per day.

One minute, stalls are set up all over the railway line as hundreds of people go about their shopping. Suddenly a train approaches as the market literally folds away and lets the train pass through. Then, in a matter of seconds, it unfolds back into a busy market. Crazy right?

This market is not actually located in Bangkok, but about 1.5 hours southwest of the city. You will need to take a taxi and minivan or multiple trains to get here, directions further below.

TakeMeTour offers this awesome day trip to the Maelong Railway Market including; transport, hotel pickup, drop off, lunch, AND a bonus visit to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market. It’s one of their signature trips and run by a true Bangkok local.

Here’s a photo of me sitting in the middle of the market. A couple of minutes later a train rushed through.

Maeklong Railway Market Tracks

The Maeklong Railway Market is a small market on the railway tracks next to Maeklong Railway Station. When there are no trains around, you can easily forget this is actually an operating railway line. When the train sounds its horn, it turns straight back into a railway line.

The market is cramped under the fold-out umbrellas. It is quite hot, and there is a lot of activity going on. The locals walk around slowly, and all over the place. Be patient as you walk through the market, otherwise, you will just get frustrated by the foot traffic.

It is interesting to see how half of the store owners are asleep on the ground behind their shop. I guess there is no better way to escape the midday heat than to sleep through it. Even better, no one will push cheap souvenirs in your face. This is definitely an authentic little local market still.

What Can I Buy at the Bangkok Train Market?

The Maeklong Railway Market has lots of fresh seafood. For most foreign travellers with nowhere to cook, this probably isn’t of much interest. However I suggest you try some of the dried fish or dried squid, it’s a local favourite, and ready to eat on the go.

There are also loads of fresh fruits grown in Ratchaburi just next door. Be sure to try the crunchy pink Rose-apples and the huge juicy Pomelos. If you’re brave enough you can even try some fresh Durian! These three are some of the most popular fruits in Thailand, and there’s no place to get them fresher than at the markets.

Get more out of Thailand: our  detailed guide to Thailand

There’s also a wide selection of Thai desserts available at the Maeklong Railway Market. I’m not familiar with the names of all of these, but they’re definitely worth trying. Some desserts are good, and some are interesting . It’s a lucky dip, so just take your chances.

Around the market, you will also find some small restaurants and cafes. A meal is about 100 THB which is a fairly standard price. Look out for the guy on the corner who sells homemade ice cream, it’s definitely worth a taste too!

You will not find tacky souvenirs or electronics at the Maeklong Railway Market. For these, your best bet is MBK in Bangkok .

Where is the Maeklong Railway Market?

The Maeklong Railway Market is located in Samut Songkhram Province . This is about 1 hour south-west of Bangkok, just beyond Samut Sakhon.

The area is surrounded by small canals and the Mae Klong River which flows out to the ocean in the Gulf of Thailand.

The market is only a short distance from the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, and the busier but more authentic Amphawa Floating Market . They’re both worth checking out if you are visiting the area.

Getting to the Maeklong Train Market

There are a few different ways to get to the train market from Bangkok. The option you take depends on time, budget, and your adventurous spirit. I personally go by minivan, as it is the quickest and cheapest.

Minivan : departs Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and the Northern Bus Terminal (near to Mo Chit BTS) for 70thb per person. Minivans depart from the Southern Bus Terminal every 40 minutes or so. The trip takes 90 minutes and drops you off right by the market. Do not go to the Victory Monument bus terminal, services ended in 2016.

Taxi: a driver for the whole day costs about 2,000thb which is economical with a group of 4. The driver can also take you to the Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa Floating Markets for the same fare.

Train: takes about 3 hours in total, one way. Catch a train from Wongwian Yai Station to Mahachai Station. Cross the river to Tha Chalom Pier. Catch another train from Ban Laem Station to the Maeklong Railway Market.

Warning: Thai trains are notorious for running late, therefore, this 3-hour journey can easily take much longer. Trains also have no air conditioning so only choose this option if you are up for the Bangkok heat.

Tour:  if all of the above seems a bit too challenging then you can also take an easy day trip to the Maeklong Railway Market from Bangkok. Check out this trip with TakeMeTour , one of their most popular day trips. This tour includes all transport, hotel pickup, drop off and lunch! It’s not a bad way to get around.

Maeklong Railway Market Train Schedule 202 3

Trains arrive at Maeklong Station 7 days a week. You can visit any day.

The Maeklong Railway Market train Schedule in 2023 is:

  • Train Arrival times : 8.30 a.m., 11.10 a.m., 2.30 p.m. and 5.40 p.m.
  • Train Departure times : 6.20 a.m., 9.00 a.m., 11.30 a.m. and 3.30 p.m.

I recommend that you hang around the railway tracks 10 to 15 minutes before the train arrives or departs. Trains in Thailand are notorious for being late, so you don’t want to wait another hour if you miss the train by just a few minutes!

Maeklong Railway Market Opening Hours

The train market is open 7 days a week from 6.20am to 5.40pm. Opening hours coincide with the first arrival and last train departure from Maeklong Station.

It is best to visit the market in the early morning. Around midday and in the afternoon the market is hot and uncomfortable, especially in the summer. That’s why all the locals are sleeping! After this market, you can continue on the to the nearby Amphawa and Damnoen Sadauk Floating Markets in the afternoon.

Tip: if you want to discover loads more markets with details of opening hours, days and locations, then consider getting my Bangkok travel guide . There are over 50 destinations in and around Bangkok. That’s way more than you can see even with a full week in Bangkok!

Accommodation Near the Market

Should you spend a night out of Bangkok near the Maeklong Railway market? Hell yes! It is a great way to experience part of ‘outer Bangkok’ that many other travelers just don’t get to see, a true insight into what the non-touristy Thai culture looks like.

The lifestyle out here is slower than in Bangkok. You can forget about the endless traffic jams, annoying Tuk Tuk drivers and the Khao Sarn Road party scene. Replace that with a laid-back village atmosphere where people live by the canals and still get around by boat instead of a car.

For an authentic experience, I suggest the  Bann Reuan Penn Homestay . This small guesthouse is located right next to the canal (klong in Thai), where you can watch the boats go by in the morning and afternoon. It is also within walking distance of the Amphawa Floating Market, perfect for enjoying the bars and restaurants at night without needing to rush back to Bangkok on the last bus of the afternoon.

From just $40 per night for a double room (including free breakfast for two), it is as good a deal as you will find in Bangkok!

Other FAQ about the Train Market

Is the Maeklong Railway Market closed? The market was temporarily closed in 2015 for track repair works. However, the market has since re-opened for visitors every day of the week!

Which other markets can I visit nearby? The closest market is the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market in  Samut Songkhram. You can get there easily by taxi which should cost less than 100 THB.

Visiting The Maeklong Railway (Life-Risking) Train Market

In Thailand things are often done a little differently, to say the least. Thus the saying, “This is Thailand”, commonly abbreviated to TIT.

Case in point: the Maeklong Railway Train Market (Talad Rom Hub), otherwise known as Siang Tai or the “life-risking” life-risking market.

Close your eyes and picture a market: Imagine the chatter of the vendors, the array of fresh produce, the busyness of the visiting crowds, the hot sun and scents and sounds.

Now imagine being startled by a train horn. You look up to see a train snaking its way through the market and heading your way!

Yep, every few hours a train makes its way right through the market. I mean, it could literally take your toes off. It's that close.

It really is a sight to behold, and one worth experiencing.

As soon as vendors hear the whistle of the train, they quickly and strategically move their goods off and away from the track.

Sellers, shoppers, and visitors then retreat until a large, yellow-and-red-hued locomotive makes its way through the chaos.

Maeklong Market is certainly one for your bucket list.

Here's a short history on the market, how to get there, what to expect, and how to make the most of your visit.

The Maeklong Railway: A Short History

The Maeklong Railway runs for 67 kilometers (42 miles) between Samut Songkhram (central Thailand) and Wongwian Yai, Bangkok.

The line has two sections: The Mahachai Line – running east, between Samut Sakhon and Wongwian Yai – and the Ban Laem Line – running between Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram.

It is one of the slowest railways in Thailand, with an average speed of 30 Km/hr. There are no signals on the line, either.

The line runs seventeen trains daily in each direction between Samut Sakhon and Wongwian Yai, and four trains daily between Samut Sakhon and Samut Songkhram.

Commissioned in 1901, the Maeklong Railway was initially a goods line with 8 stops. The train transported produce and fish to the famous markets of Bangkok.

After a number of changes over the years, it was brought under the control of the State Railway of Thailand in 1952 ( 1 ).

The railway became a novelty tourist destination for its unique path through the Maeklong Railway Market (founded in 1905).

Known to locals as the “umbrella pull-down” market, or Siang Tai  (“life-risking”) market, vendors regularly shift their goods, shop fronts, and awnings out of the way of passing trains.

What to Expect at Maeklong

As with many Thai markets, Maeklong is very busy in the early morning. Thailand is naturally cooler earlier in the day, so setting up shop and trading goods is far more pleasant before the sun is up.

There's some cover in the market but not everywhere, so you might be better to visit early in the day too, or on an overcast day. Either way, carry your sunscreen.

Don't worry about getting run over by the train. It looks more dangerous in the pictures than it is in real life.

As the train approaches the stretch that cuts through the market, a warning bell is sounded and magnified by the market’s sound system. The train also slows down.

This warning will prompt a flurry of activity, as vendors move their produce out of the way and pull back the awnings of their little store fronts.

The train lets out a loud beep as it approaches a bend, so you'll know when to get out of the way. If you heed the warning bell, there will be more than enough time to move.

Try to be respectful of space. Try not to jostle anyone in your efforts to give the moving train a wide berth while simultaneously snapping pictures.

What's on Offer?

With plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables and spices and Thai treats, the Maeklong Railway Market is a foodie’s paradise. There's also some clothes shops and other bits and bobs, as you've no doubt come to expect from a Thai market.

If you’ve got a place to cook dinner, you can buy fresh goods for your evening meal. If not, enjoy the Thai fruit . You'll find all the usual suspects here from pomelo to jackfruit and watermelon to durian.

Go easy on the durian though. It's an acquired taste, so buy a small portion to try first. Also bear in mind that most hotels don't allow durian in the rooms, as it creates a pungent smell.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you'll enjoy the Thai desserts and homemade ice cream, coconut in particular.

There's a bunch of small restaurants too. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that in Thailand you can always find something to eat for a very reasonable price.

How to Get to Maeklong Railway Market

Located approximately 80 kilometers outside of Bangkok, there are a number of ways to get to the Maeklong Railway Market.

Perhaps the most common tourist route from Bangkok to Samut Songkhram is with a Maeklong Railway Market tour, which will lead you through Bangkok’s floating markets to the popular railway crossing.

A tour like this will cost around £17/$20 per person. Generally speaking these tours start early and follow a regimented program, so be prepared to have breakfast early and get to your meeting point.

If you'd prefer to do the trip independent of a tour you can take a bus.

Buses depart Bangkok Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and the Northern Bus Terminal (near to Mo Chit BTS) and cost 70 Baht per person. The buses depart every 40 minutes or so.

The journey takes 1.5 hours and drops you off right by the market, though it may take longer depending on the traffic that day.

If you've hired a car or have a friend with one, you can quite easily drive to Maeklong Market. Please see the Google map below to plan your journey.

I wouldn't recommend doing the journey by moped. It's pretty far and the motorways aren't very safe, especially if you're an inexperienced rider.

If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, you can take the train from Bangkok and experience riding through the middle of the market.

Head to Wongwian Yai Railway Station (located across the Chao Phraya River) and look for a train bound for Mahachai.

After you disembark in Mahachai, you’ll have to find the ferry to Ban Laem, which is located just a few blocks from the railway station, near the park at Mahachai Pier.

Tickets should only cost 3 THB.

Once in Ban Laem, you’ll need to walk 10 minutes to the railway station, which is near the river and a temple.

Once there, look for a sign indicating you’re boarding a train bound for Maeklong.

This train will take you directly through the market.

Once you've been through the market you can disembark and wait for the train to reverse its course, so that you can take photos and enjoy the scene from a new perspective.

The journey from Bangkok will take 3 hours but will only cost you 23 THB. Bear in mind that trains are notoriously unreliable in Thailand and the journey may take much longer.

You can use the timetable here to see when the trains depart, but I'd ask the concierge at your hotel or guesthouse to check the most recent updates for you, as timetables do change.

Maeklong Market Train Schedule

The last thing you want to do is visit the market and not see a train, so here's a list of the times the trains arrive and depart the local station.

Again, making an enquiry at your hotel, the station, or with locals at the market is ideal, as times are subject to change.

Tips for a Happy Trip to Maeklong Train Market

Hopefully you now have all the information you need to plan your trip. Here's a quick recap on what you need to consider:

  • Check with someone who speaks Thai about the train’s current timetable, as it may have changed since the posting of this article.
  • Certainly bring your camera or phone along to snap the train as it comes through, but do keep a safe distance, especially if you have kids. Visitors often underestimate just how close the train gets to the stalls, as locals are so used to it that they stand right close to the edge.
  • Wear loose-fitting clothing and bring a hat and sunscreen. By the time you visit the market the hot Thai sun will likely be in full force.
  • If you plan to visit the market via the train/ferry combination, leave plenty of time to buy your tickets, arrive at your departure track, and find the next station. Trips out of the city are often difficult for those who do not speak or read Thai, and it may take you some time to find your way.
  • Be considerate and polite during your time at the market. No one enjoys cameras or video equipment being shoved in their faces, and you should always ask before taking picture of the vendors.

Maeklong market is a favorite among visitors because it offers a taste of Thailand without the hawking and pushiness found at the popular tourist markets of Bangkok.

It's an insight into a unique way of working – literally on a train track – and there's a real sense of community here.

Have you visited the Maeklong Railway Market in Thailand? Let me know what you enjoyed about the experience, or if you have any other advice to for would be visitors.

Over time, the market grew and expanded, and in 1905, the railway line was built right through the middle of it. As the train service began, vendors quickly adapted to the new situation, and the tourists started pouring in.

Today, the market continues to attract visitors from all over the world who come to marvel at market vendors skillfully packing and unpacking their stalls to make way for the passing trains.

A great way to experience Thai farmers' way of life through local markets. Then, we visit the Damnoen Saduak floating market, a great place to try some local fruits, snacks, the famous “boat noodles”, and the delicious “mango with sticky rice”. Along the way we visit a coconut sugar farm as well. In the weekend we also visit the traditional Tha Kha floating market, one of the hidden gems around Bangkok. This fun private day trip from Bangkok takes you southwest of the city to the highlights of Samut Songkhram and Ratchaburi province.  After approximately 1½ hours driving from Bangkok we arrive at the unusual Maeklong railway market, a market situated on railway track (known as "Talad Romhoop" or "market with closed umbrellas" among the locals). Watch merchants quickly fold their stall covers and move their products away from the tracks when the train is arriving.  Then, see them skillfully roll tables and baskets back into position in seconds to resume their business after the train leaves.

We then visit the popular Damnoen Saduak floating market in Ratchaburi province.  This very old floating market is where villagers came to buy and sell their farm produce. It is open daily and in present days it is mainly visited by tourists, many of the boats are used to sell souvenirs. The market came about after a manmade canal was dug in the reign of King Rama IV to facilitate transportation by boats in the area.  This canal was later named Damnoen Saduak, meaning "convenient travel". Highlight of this market is the variety of local snacks, tropical fruits, and the famous "boat noodles".

Along the way we visit a coconut sugar farm as well.

When possible we also visit Tha Kha floating market, one of the hidden gems around Bangkok. It is highly recommended to plan your tour for the weekend as then this market is open. An authentic floating market that has served the local community for 30 years.  Originally, the market was where fishermen and farmers came to exchange their goods.  After the trip to the market, we will go on a rowing boat and explore the beautiful countryside around this market.

The included boat tour is done at Tha Kha when we visit all 3 markets, when visiting 2 markets it will be done at Damnoen Saduak.

We will pass salt farms on the way to the markets and can make a stop when possible. Do note that salt harvesting is seasonal and is best seen during dry season (Feb - May).

This private tour from Bangkok is organised exclusively for you, no others will join. You will be in trusted hands with our professional driver and English speaking licensed tour guide.

This tour is offered without a full lunch, we do include several snacks, tropical fruits, and delicious noodle soup. If you like to enjoy a nice lunch, then please have a look at our Floating markets and Bangkok tour or Markets and Tham Khao Bin cave tour .

UK Tourist – March 13, 2024

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the Mae Klong Railway market, Damnoen Saduak market and Tha Kha Market. This was my husband’s first time in Thailand and this tour was one of his main highlights, particularly Mae Klong and the tranquil boat ride at Damnoen Saduak. Our tour guide B was informative and friendly, walking us through all the various parts, providing delicious Thai delicacies from the market, what a treat. The Railway market was more crowded and tourist-focused than the last time I visited it which B explained was a result of the post-pandemic tourism boom. Damnoen was even better than I remembered and Tha Kha was a fun discovery though a lot more hectic. We were slightly disappointed not to visit the Coconut Farm as advertised in the package but overall still had a wonderful day.

David S – February 12, 2024

Absolutely fabulous. Ms B and Mr A were wonderful. Answered every question and made the whole trip so enjoyable. Loved all the samples Ms B purchased for us to try. Great time!

Donna D – December 27, 2023

We have been on this tour before, a few times, and they made the train market and floating market outstanding. Tour guide and drivers were outstanding. We had to cancel last minute on the morning of our booking, due to illness, however after talking to BKK Tours they agreed to moved it a day. This was our third time using this company and I can not say anything but good things. If you are thinking of doing a tour in Bangkok I would highly recommend this company! They are just wonderful and so so friendly.

Sara – September 7, 2022

Great day out. Miss Air was very kind and gentle and gave us plenty of opportunities to shop if we wanted. Loved the way she interacted with the stall holders at the markets. There were plenty of opportunities to try local food and we also had a coffee stop. The van used was very comfortable and the driver was lovely.

Londonmum35 – August 11, 2022

BKK were very professional and helpful right from the beginning. Due to our holiday dates I had wanted to visit the Damnoen Saduk floating market on a Friday, but noticed they were not offering this, only weekends. When I requested it, they explained it was because the market was not yet recovered from the pandemic closure and might be less worth it on a weekday, but they offered to hold a reservation for us and then wait and see nearer the time if it would now make a better visit. (I had contacted them a month in advance.) Ms Air, our guide, visited the market during the week just before to check, and then they advised the visit could go ahead as many more sellers were now back. I really appreciated their professionalism in this. The day itself was wonderful – an early start but worth it! After a luxury car journey, during which Ms Air told us interesting information about what we would see, we arrived first at the train market. I had specifically chosen a company that arrived by car, not train, as I wanted to watch the train arrive and leave, and had noted from reviews that Ms Air could secure a table at the cafe with a great view. In fact we were lucky enough to be at the market long enough for two trains to pass through with great views. The market was wonderful in its own right even without the train, a busy local market in which we were shown many fascinating stalls and sampled some lovely treats. And then onto the nearby floating market. We were so pleased that Ms Air felt that it seemed quite well recovered – not many tourists (which was great for us) but most sellers were back. We were gently paddled through the market in a long tail boat, enjoying the atmosphere, and felt no pressure to buy anything. We also made a stop by the coconut sweet maker, and Ms Air explained what he was doing and arranged for us to have a go too at spooning out the candy mix, which was fun. She gave us as much time as we wanted to wander through the stalls, and helped us negotiate fair prices for the things we wanted to buy. We only left once we were ready, and again on the way home she gave us great advice and suggestions for our remaining stay. Definitely one of our favourite days of the holiday!

Jeremy D – February 21, 2020

Loved the tour and Ms Raht was an excellent guide, willing to help and answer all our questions. The best way for us to end a vacation.

John – February 2, 2020

Our guide tour Air and our driver did an excellent job. They tailored our tour based on our preferences and their recommendations. We had a wonderful time with them in Bangkok. Thank you very much!!!

Kamran – January 3, 2020

Another excellent tour on our itinerary. Very well organized and thought out. Ms. Onn was an outstanding guide, did a great job picking out refreshments and foods to give us a full Thai experience. She was very knowledgeable and made sure we got a good sense of some of the background behind each of the locations we visited.

Janine W – December 27, 2019

A wonderful, fun experience! Our excellent tour guide, Nadia, made sure we got the chance to taste various fruits and front-row seats to see the train roll through the market. She even made our visit to the chaotic floating market flow easily, arranging transport and shopping and food tasting seamlessly.

SPBKK – December 17, 2019

A morning of pure fun and amazing experiences. We loved this tour, to see the train market and the water market is like nothing we have ever seen before. Mrs Onn is super friendly, intelligent, helpful and knowledgable.

Colleen M – December 8, 2019

I kept patting myself on my back for selecting this tour company. We just didn’t believe Damnoen Saduak could have deteriorated so badly, thank goodness we had the perspective of the Tha Kha floating market. Surprisingly, the Railway market and the food were the highlights of our tour. Air was extremely cheerful, polite, and patient. She was knowledgeable and solicitous. We have made many trips to Southeast Asia, (4 to Bangkok alone) and we have never tried the food due to fear of illness. Air encouraged us to try foods. She selected foods that would not upset our Western stomachs, and we were delighted with her choices. As we left one market, we asked what the line of people was for. They were waiting for the soup she had gotten us. She waited in that long line while we were sitting, eating another another of her food selections, then she brought us the bowls of soup. She made sure we had the best of everything. Air was friendly with many, many vendors and we received the benefit of their friendships. Air simply gave us a very happy, fun day. It could not have been better.

CP – November 6, 2019

Ms. Nira was extremely personable, professional, and knowledgeable. Touring with her felt like a good friend taking you around town. The tour went like clock work and we never felt rushed. The floating market experience was surreal and the authentic lunch was delicious. This BKK tour is a must when visiting Bangkok!

Keri A – October 24, 2019

This was the second time we did this tour with Air and it did not disappoint! We were picked up on time, and the journey to the markets was comfortable. Once at the markets, Air showed us around, had us try various foods and even got us a cup of tea since we hadn’t had time for one before we left! Having the delicious mango and sticky rice at the Floating Market was the highlight! Air was full of interesting information and extremely pleasant.

Marty – August 30, 2019

Air was super friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. Very much enjoyed the walk through markets trying local delights.

Donna L – August 26, 2019

Nadia was the best, an excellent guide. Highlight of this tour is the train coming through the Train Market.

Julie – June 27, 2019

Day 1 of our two day tour package consisted of tours on the floating market and the Railway market. Our guide, Petch, and driver, Mr A, meet us promptly at our hotel in downtown Bangkok. The van was a brilliant set up. Better than we imagined. And, Mr A is a pro at navigating the Bangkok traffic!

Petch is very knowledgeable about Thai culture and have us excellent context along the car ride on what to expect in the floating market. We made one stop at a local farm where we got to see how coconut sugar is processed. My family loved the place…My daughter especially liked climbing the coconut tree while we shopped around. We even found a few tasty gifts to bring back to the States.

Once we arrived, it was as if Petch knew ‘everyone’ at the market which made our transition to a boat flawless. Petch masterfully balanced answering our questions on the boat and letting my family enjoy the experience. She allotted enough time after the boat to show us an opportunity to explore the market on foot. She surprised us at the end with ice cream for the kids and some traditional Thai snacks and fruit for us to enjoy at the Railway market.

Back at the van, Mr A had cold towels and water waiting for us! We were very appreciative. Petch took us straight away to a spot at the Railway market where we arrived just in time for the 11am train and had enough time to spare to wait for the 11:30am train. While waiting, Petch had prearranged a perfect spot for us to view the Train where we ate the food from the Floating Market and enjoyed cold drinks. We were able to take awesome pix and video of all the activities leading up to the Train’s arrival.

Mr A picked us up right on the spot with more cold towels and water for us! That was awesome. On the way back to the hotel, we mostly fell asleep. Petch explained to us what to expect for the next day.

Petch is so friendly and easy to talk and relate to. My family and I absolutely fell in love with her. That night, my kids (6 and 9 yrs old) continued to talk about Petch, so I know they really really liked her.

Overall Day 1 was super flawless and a great experience!!

Tera W – February 21, 2019

The booking process was the easiest, most efficient, and most helpful that I’ve ever received! This tour was top-notch on all levels. It was a highlight to be on a boat at the Floating Market before the craziness of all the other tourists arrived. It was very special. Air was simply wonderful. She went to such lengths to teach us everything and to make us feel so welcomed and comfortable. She was the very best!

Monika – February 7, 2019

The pick up was on time and the transport was good. The railway was a good experience. The floating market was a bit disappointing because it was a week day, not much was happening. Our guide Ms. Air was excellent. Thank you for giving us a great day.

Amanda – February 3, 2019

Excellent service! Our guide Ms Onn was very kind and patient.

Yomama – January 27, 2019

The BEST! Toured with Air for 4 days. Saw all the sites. Everything about BKK is excellent. Had the best time on my vacation touring with Air.

train market tour

The Maeklong Railway Market is one of Thailand’s most unique experiences, promising travelers unforgettable memories. Known for its extraordinary setup that operates directly on the railway tracks, this bustling train market near Bangkok has become a must-visit destination for many visitors to the Southeast Asian country.

Before embarking on this fascinating journey, there are essential things you need to know to make the most of your visit.

From understanding the mesmerizing train passage to navigating through the lively stalls, this guide to visiting the exciting train market near Bangkok delves into the history and what to expect on a day trip to ensure you relish every moment at the enigmatic Maeklong Railway Market.

About the Maeklong Railway Market

a train passing through the maeklong railway market

Located in the Samut Songkhram province of Thailand, the Maeklong Railway Market has a fascinating history that dates back over a century. Established in the late 19th century, this unique market evolved alongside the construction of the Maeklong Railway in 1905, which connected Samut Songkhram to Bangkok.

What makes this market truly extraordinary is that it operates directly on the railway tracks. When the train approaches, vendors deftly retract their awnings and move their stalls to allow the train to pass through, only to resume their positions moments later.

This quirky practice has become a hallmark of the market, attracting curious visitors from around the world eager to witness the market in action.

Over the years, the Maeklong Railway Market, sometimes called the Mae Klong, has grown into a popular tourist attraction, blending historical significance with a lively shopping experience. In fact, along with the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market , the train market near Bangkok is one of the most popular day trips from the capital city.

Book a day trip to the Train Market and Floating Market

How to Get to Maeklong Train Market from Bangkok

people taking pictures as a train moves through the narrow maeklong railway market

The Maeklong Railway Market’s location in Samut Songkhram province, only a short distance from Bangkok, makes it easily accessible for a day trip. About 50 miles (80 km) from the capital city, a day trip to the train market and floating market is one of the best things to add to your Bangkok itinerary .

There are several ways to get to the popular train market from Bangkok.

Guided Tour

Of course, a guided tour is the easiest and fastest way to get to Maeklong Railway Market. We took this group tour – which picked us up from our hotel and dropped us off at the MBK Center.

Our guide was friendly and knowledgeable. After a brief stop at an outdoor shopping center where we could use the restroom and buy a coffee or breakfast, we then made our way to a rural train station.

a rural train station that will take you to the maeklong train market from bangkok

There we boarded a 60-year-old train. This train is not like the newer, nicer overnight trains from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or elsewhere. This train is old and vintage, with no air conditioning and a slow speed. But it is a cool experience, nonetheless.

You’ll get to see the market from the train as it arrives, waving at people, even giving high fives as the train squeezes through the market. Upon arrival, you’ll have free time to explore the market and watch the train depart before meeting up with your guide again to head to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market .

Our guided tour had about 12 people on it, but you do not have to stay as a group during your market visits. You are basically just together during the drive to and from Bangkok. If you prefer, you can also book a private tour to the markets for just your family.

Private Car / Minivan / Taxi

If you are planning to rent a car in Thailand, you can do a self-drive to Maeklong Railway Market. Additionally, you can opt for a private transfer from Bangkok to the train market in a minivan or taxi.

Be sure to do the math, but if you have a family of three or more, a private transfer may cost less than booking a group tour.

Train Schedule

There are 4 scheduled arrivals (and 4 departures) during the day. You’ll want to be sure to check their schedule before you head there to make sure you are there when a train is arriving or departing.

As of 2023, the trains arrive at 8:30 a.m., 11:10 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 5:40 p.m.

Your best opportunities are around 8:30 am and 11:10 am (when you can catch the train arriving and then departing 30 minutes later.)  After 5:40 p.m. the train spends the night at the market and leaves at 6:30 a.m. to begin its daily routes again.

What to Do at the Maeklong Railway Market

Once you arrive at the Maeklong Railway Market you are greeted with the chaos of a bustling market in action. Here are a few things to do during your Maeklong train market day trip from Bangkok.

Ride the Train

a family taking a photo on the train during a maeklong railway market bangkok day trip

If you take a guided tour to Maeklong Railway Market, a train ride may be included. Riding the train to the market is just as much an experience as the market itself. The short ride takes you through the countryside and past farms and fields.

As you get closer to the market, the buildings begin to narrow in and the passageway becomes a tight squeeze. As the train slowly rumbles its way into the market, you’ll hear cheers from the crowd of onlookers, eager to wave and give you a high five as you pass by.

It is hard not to get excited along with the crowd as you wave and celebrate your arrival at one of Thailand’s most famous markets.

Explore the Train Market Stalls

woman walking along the train tracks at the bangkok train market maeklong

Once you depart the train you’ll have free time to explore the market. Peruse the various market stalls, and enjoy the atmosphere of this busy market. You’ll find lots of local vendors selling fresh seafood, produce, apparel, and souvenirs all selling their goods from beneath collapsible tents and tarps.

Walk in the direction from which you just came in on the train so you won’t feel rushed to get to a good spot once the train starts to depart.

Sample Fresh Fruit and Thai food

man eating durian

Aside from the novelty of the market’s operation, visitors can also explore the diverse array of goods and fresh produce sold by the local vendors. Sampling some of the fresh fruits and vegetables gives you the chance to immerse yourself in a small part of Thai culture and enjoy some of the country’s authentic flavors.

Two fruits to try are rambutan and durian. The first grows wild in Thailand but is hard to find in the United States. Durian is a famous fruit across Southeast Asia. Known for its pungent, often putrid smell, durian is a  fun food to try in Thailand. Although it doesn’t have a pleasant smell, it tastes somewhat like a melon crossed with a mango.

The Maeklong Railway Market also offers a variety of delicious Thai street food and snacks . Take some time to sample the local delicacies and indulge in the unique flavors of the region.

Shop for Clothing and Souvenirs

Along with fresh fruits and yummy food, you’ll also find plenty of vendors selling clothing like elephant pants, t-shirts, and lightweight sundresses that are perfect for Thailand’s warm climate.

While you’re taking in the atmosphere of the market, it is a great time to shop for souvenirs from Thailand and support local vendors in the area.

Watch the Train Depart

a man taking a selfie at the maeklong train market near bangkok

The grand finale of your visit comes when the train is scheduled to leave the market.

Witnessing the incredible synchronization between vendors and the train is a sight to behold, and the lively atmosphere adds to the charm of the experience.

The train blows its horn, an alarm will often sound within some of the booths, and vendors begin moving racks of clothes, and boxes of produce into their stalls. They then fold up their tarps that offer shade from the sun when the market is in full swing.

Find a spot to stand in one of the stalls and wait and watch as the train starts to depart. Although the train moves through at a snail’s pace, be sure to keep a tight grip on little children who might otherwise get curiously close to the train while it is in motion.

Other things to do near the Maeklong Railway Market

If you have extra time and are interested in exploring the surrounding area, you can consider visiting nearby attractions such as the Damnoen Saduak or Amphawa Floating Markets or other cultural landmarks in Samut Songkhram province.

Damnoen Saduak Floating Market

boats along the canal at the damnoen saduak floating market

The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is another unique market located only 10-15 minutes away by car from the Maeklong Railway Market.

The largest and most famous floating market in Thailand, visitors will enjoy a boat ride through the canal lined with vendors selling their goods from their longtail boats.

Amphawa Floating Market

Similar to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market, the Amphawa Market is another great floating market in the Samut Songkhram province. Less touristy and crowded than Damnoen Saduak, you’ll have the opportunity for a more authentic, local market experience here.

FAQs about a Maeklong Train Market Bangkok Day Trip

Of course, if you are considering a Maeklong Train Market Bangkok Day Trip, it’s natural to have a few questions. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we have received.

Is Maeklong Railway Market worth visiting?

Yes, the Maeklong Railway Market is definitely worth visiting! It was one of the most memorable days during our 2 week Thailand itinerary . Its quirky setup, with vendors quickly moving their stalls as the train passes through, is a spectacle that you won’t find in many other places.

It offers a glimpse into the daily life and resourcefulness of the local community, as the market has coexisted with the railway for over a century.

Overall, the Maeklong Railway Market is a must-see attraction and well worth a visit for travelers looking to discover something truly special in Thailand. In fact, the unique markets throughout the country are one of the many reasons Thailand is one of the best Asian destinations for a family vacation .

Is Maeklong Railway Market safe with kids?

a child hanging her hand out of a train for a high five at the maeklong railway market

Seeing the photos and videos of the train inches away from market visitors will undoubtedly give parents a reason to pause. But if you are visiting Thailand with kids , the Maeklong Railway Market can be a fun and safe experience for your family.

The market operates directly on the railway tracks, and the train passes through several times a day. But, the train departs and arrives slowly, giving you plenty of time to clear the tracks and move to the designated safety zones when the train is approaching.

While some have coined Maeklong Railway Market the most dangerous market in the world, it really isn’t as dangerous as perceived. However, if traveling with young children, be sure to hold onto them when the train approaches and passes by.

On the note of safety, you should also be aware of your belongings. The market can become incredibly crowded, and pickpocketing can be a concern in crowded places, in any country.

How much time do you need at the Maeklong Railway Market?

How much time you spend at the Maeklong Railway Market will depend on how well you schedule your visit. You will want to check the train schedule and plan to be there when a train arrives and/or departs. Alternatively, you can take the train to the market and then watch it depart to experience the unique process from two perspectives.

If you take the train in, or arrive shortly before the train arrives, you’ll only need about 30 minutes at the Maeklong Railway Market.

The train will arrive, and then about 20 minutes later it will leave the way it came in. Watching the train pass and the market retract and reorganize is the main reason for visiting!

You’ll also want some time to explore the various stalls and enjoy shopping for fresh produce, local snacks, souvenirs, and other items, as well as time to take a few photos and soak in the ambiance.

With all that said, you can visit the market in less than an hour if you time your visit accordingly with the train schedule. Additionally, if you’re visiting the market as part of a guided tour , the allotted time might be predetermined by the tour itinerary.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).

Moscow metro tour: architectural styles of the subway.

train market tour

Duration: 2 hours

Categories: Culture & History, Sightseeing

This metro tour of Russia’s capital and most populous city, Moscow, is your chance to get a unique insight into the beautiful and impressive architecture of the city's underground stations. Admire their marble walls and high ceilings representing Stalin's desire for glory after World War 2, and see first-hand how the interiors change with the rise of new political eras. Your guide will lead you through the complex network, which is one of the most heavily used rapid transit systems worldwide, with over two billion travelers in 2011.

Opened in 1935, Moscow’s underground system, now 190 miles (305 km) long with 185 stations, is today one the largest and most heavily used rapid transit systems in the world. On this Moscow metro tour, discover the impressive architecture of Moscow’s underground stations and learn how they reflect the Soviet era.

Getting around by metro, your local guide will take you through parts of Moscow’s infamous history. Stop at stations built during the time of the USSR (Soviet Union) that are praised as one of the most extravagant architectural projects from Stalin’s time. After World War 2, he was keen on establishing Stalinist architecture to represent his rising regime and a recognized empire. Learn how when his successor started the de-Stalinization of the former Soviet Union in 1953, the extravagancy of the architecture was toned down.

Discover how the unique character of each station reflected several different eras. While stations like Kievskaya and Slavyansky Bulvar have pompous halls and high stucco ceilings brimming with extravagant decorations, those built later, like Volzhskaya, are lightly adorned with sparse furnishings. Architect Alexey Dushkin and painter Alexander Deyneka were just two of the many artists who made these magnificent landmarks possible.

Revel in Moscow's glory days, as well as the years of scarcity, on this fascinating Moscow metro experience. Conclude your tour at one of the central stations in Moscow. If you're lucky, you may even find the secret entrance to the unconfirmed Metro-2, a parallel underground system used by the government -- a mystery which has neither been denied nor confirmed today.

Culture Shock Rating

We have a wide range of tours designed to give you an insight into the destination you're travelling in and there is something for everybody. The culture shock ratings considers the destination visited, transport used, activities undertaken and that "Wow, I'm really not at home now!" factor. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

This is the least confronting of our tour range. Transport used on the trip is either private or a very comfortable public option, the activities included are usually iconic sites and locations that are not all too confronting.

The tour can include a mix of private and public transport providing a level of comfort that is slightly below what you would experience at home. Sites visited are usually iconic sites, tours can also include market visits, visits to communities etc that provide the traveller with a fantastic insight into destination.

Expect to rough it for parts of this tour, whether it's a packed public bus where you are forced to stand, a visit to a local market, a local community, you are sure to have an experience that is very different from what you're used to at home.

The comforts of your home town and the environment you are used to are more of a rarity. Expect some challenging transport options, visits to local sites and areas that don't resemble anything at home.

You're out there in the global community! You are likely to be exposed to the elements, travel in whatever means of transport is available and basically take it as it comes, whatever comes! It can be tough.

Physical Rating

Our physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the tour. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our gradings is as follows…

These tours have very limited physical activity. Usually climbing in and out of the transport provided, walking through sites, markets etc included in the itinerary.

These tours have a bit of physical activity but nothing that should challenge you too much. This could be climbing on and off public transport through to a walk through the destination you're travelling in, they can include walking only tours or a combination of walking and transport.

These tours involve a bit of physical activity from walking up and down hills in the destination you're travelling in or the surrounding areas. Climbing on and off local transport or riding a bike up to 30 kms along predominantly flat terrain or jumping in a kayak for a gentle paddle on flat water.

These Tours will provide you with some solid physical activity. Whether its bike riding, walking, trekking, kayaking or riding on public transport you will need to have a good level of fitness to enjoy this tour.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. These tours are our most challenging and involve some serious walking, hiking or bike riding. Can involve step climbs by foot or pedal and some challenging public transport options in the destination you are travelling.

Luxury Rating

Some trips are like a stroll on the beach, while others have you trekking alpine passes. Some of you thrive on camping out on the savannah, while others may prefer a hot shower and a comfortable bed in a lodge. Follow the grading systems below to find the right trip for you.

To help you choose the trip that's right for you, we've broken all of our trips down into four service levels. Measuring the comfort level of the accommodation and transport. So whether you're travelling on a budget and want to save money by using public transport, or prefer upgraded accommodation and are happy to pay a little more, then we have a level for you.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.

Know More about this tour

We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
