best places to visit in southern indiana

Genevieve Borden / Shutterstock

  • Destinations
  • United States

Southern Indiana is filled with several small towns of under 15,000 people. Each adorable small town offers experiences unlike any other. If you are looking for a small-town experience, you can have an enjoyable time in Indiana. These small towns will lure you in with their love of Indiana products and an opportunity to welcome you into their community. Antique fans will love this area of Indiana, as the majority of these adorable small towns have several antique shops waiting for you. The two-lane highways are a great place to begin your journey in visiting smaller towns all across the country. Small towns play big when it comes to offering things for you and me to see and do. Here are several adorable small towns in Indiana that you need to have on your radar.

1. French Lick

French Lick, Indiana, is home to rolling hills and a resort that you will fall in love with. The West Baden Springs Hotel is an award-winning property with an atrium that spans more than 200 feet. It’s vast, beautiful, and an experience you will never forget. The French Lick Springs Hotel is an American Classic with memories of a lifetime. Golfing, hiking, spas, gardens, and historic tours are amenities offered at these properties. The well-known restaurant, 33 Brick Street , is where you can dine and see legendary basketball player Larry Bird’s trophies and jersey. You can also troll the streets and shop in the stores that carry unique products to the area. I would recommend that you stay as busy or relaxed as you choose when you visit French Lick.

Historic buildings, downtown Corydon, Indiana.

Melinda Fawver / Shutterstock

Corydon is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream come true. Kayaking, canoeing, hiking, and biking are all very popular in this area in Indiana. History comes to life in all corners of this town. Indiana’s first state capital was in Corydon. You can tour the Federal-style limestone capitol building that was built in the early 1800s. The signage around town will help you identify all of the historical sites and understand more about the history of Corydon. Explore The Battle of Corydon Battlefield and learn stories that run deep with local history. Before you leave town, enjoy a winery, shopping with local artisans, and enjoy a good meal or two.

3. Rising Sun

There’s something to be said about a river and the charm of a small town. Rising Sun, Indiana, is no exception. Enjoy the views of the Ohio River as you stroll the riverwalk. Rising Sun Riverwalk park offers an incredible picnic area as well as playground equipment. This park is the area where several events and festivals are held throughout the year. Antique lovers will enjoy the shopping opportunities in this river town as well as an opportunity to meet fellow antique enthusiasts. A fun fact about Rising Sun is that the state’s oldest courthouse in continuous use is located in this river town.

Broadway Fountain, Madison, Indiana.

brianasiracuse / Shutterstock

Madison, Indiana, is where rolling hills and bluffs meet the Ohio River. If a road trip is part of your visit, be sure to travel the Ohio River Scenic Route . Many people visit Madison to see Broadway Fountain, one of only four remaining of this style in the world. Originally exhibited in Philadelphia in 1876, it was presented to the city in 1886 by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. In 1976, this fountain was recast in bronze to celebrate America’s bicentennial. Shopping in the area offers Indiana-made products, and antique shops are abundant. If you are on the hunt for a specific treasure, there’s a good chance that you will find it in Madison. Kick back and enjoy the slower pace that Madison has to offer.

Outdoor fans will appreciate Salem, Indiana, and the history that goes along with it. Beck’s Mill showcases a slice of a quieter time and an opportunity to go back in time. This old mill sat still for years and was recently brought back to life through the work of volunteers. The majority of the mill is wheelchair accessible, and cash and check are the forms of payment accepted on-site. Hunter’s Ridge Winery is a popular spot for locals and visitors to hang out. Railroad lovers will enjoy the depot railroad museum in the town of Salem. There’s a little something for everyone in this small town, including the Salem Speedway.

Hillside in Paoli, Indiana.

Jim Bethel / Shutterstock

This small town in Southern Indiana offers an experience that you can’t find in many other places. It’s located near French Lick and can easily be incorporated with a visit there. Willstem is a 1,100-acre outdoor attraction . You can bathe an elephant, take a zipline tour, participate in an ATV tour, and take a trail ride by horseback. I have not visited Wilstem, but several of my friends have and they have bathed elephants. This type of animal encounter puts this town high on my list of places to visit in Southern Indiana. Several specialty shops make this a favorite place to shop for souvenirs and gifts.

Linton, Indiana, knows how to celebrate Independence Day. They have the largest 4th of July parade in the state of Indiana. The town swells to more than 40,000 people over the week-long celebration known as Freedom Festival. Small-town charm with a patriotic theme makes for the perfect time to visit Linton. Several other events and festivals are held in this small community throughout the year. Sunset Park is nearby and offers camping and outdoor activities, including fishing.

Inside Marengo Cave, Marengo, Indiana.

Jeffrey M. Frank / Shutterstock

Caving is popular in Southern Indiana and Marengo, Indiana, is no exception. The Marengo Cave is a U.S. National Landmark and visited by thousands every year. If you are looking for a different type of outdoor adventure in a small town, this national landmark is perfect for you. The rural setting and opportunity to explore something new make Marengo a small Indiana town to have your eyes on.

9. New Harmony

New Harmony, Indiana, offers antiques, art galleries, history, and numerous outdoor experiences. A highlight of New Harmony is 12 buildings from the early 19th century and 20 properties from other mid-19th century timeframes. Are you curious about whiskey and how it tastes? Rod Clark’s Whiskey Experience is a popular thing to try when you visit. The New Harmony Dulcimer Company brings music to the town. Listen and you may hear a dulcimer playing while you stroll the streets of New Harmony. If a nighttime thrill is something you desire, book a ghost tour and experience New Harmony in the dark. No matter what time you visit, you will enjoy yourself in this small Southern Indiana town.

Rock Rest Falls, Cali Nature Preserve.

Kenneth Keifer / Shutterstock

10. North Vernon

Situated North of Madison, this town could be incorporated into your visit to Madison. The Classic Stained Glass and Gift Gallery is a favorite shop of mine. I have never taken a class, but you can learn how to make stained glass in this gallery in North Vernon, Indiana. Muscatatuck County Park is nearby and includes camping; also nearby is Cali Nature Preserve, where you can find Rock Rest Falls, pictured above.

Pro Tips For Visiting Southern Indiana

Southern Indiana does experience all four seasons, making it a destination to visit different times of the year for different experiences. Many nature areas offer hiking trails in the warmer months and cross-country skiing in the cooler months. Shoulder seasons, from April to May and September to October, are ideal times to visit. Some of the attractions are closed for the season, but many things are open and the crowds are gone.

Southern Indiana has several distilleries and wineries for you to experience. Some of them offer indoor and outdoor music as well as a fun shopping experience.

Southern Indiana offers a beautiful landscape that includes cliffs, valleys, and overviews of the rivers that border Indiana in many different spots. Take the two-lane highways and you will come upon some of the most adorable small towns in the country. Bakeries and pie shops are located in some of America’s smallest towns, Indiana included. There’s something special about having a baker serve up a hot slice of pie that they made with their hands and served to you with love. When you visit these small towns, you will experience the heart of the people in these smaller communities.

The shopping is often unique and the hours sometimes vary. Many shop owners are sole business owners and run the business themselves and have to step away for short periods of time. Be flexible and realize that the sign on the door that says, “Opens noonish and closes at 3:30ish” is a real note. There is a real person behind those words. It’s often someone who is working hard 7 days a week for more than 10 hours a day.

Allow yourself to become acquainted with the folks in these small towns. The chances are fairly good that you will find yourself staying connected with the people you meet up with. I have met many people in small towns all across America, and it’s not uncommon to meet up with them in a restaurant and enjoy some local cooking.

4 Southern Indiana Hikes from Most Accessible to Most Challenging

Check out these southern Indiana hikes, all within 40 minutes (and often much less) from downtown Corydon. In most cases, you could go for a day hike and be back in town for a tasty meal and comfy bed before the day is over. It’s really the best of everything: Great views and fresh air followed by all the modern conveniences.

Some trails are a mile long and have gravel or paved paths, while the Adventure Hiking Trail is a rugged 25.5 miles long! Many of our trails, particularly at O’Bannon Woods State Park, fall somewhere in between, meaning there’s something for every hiker (Or mountain biker or horseback rider!) in Harrison County.

Here are some selected southern Indiana hikes to help you narrow down your next adventure.

Most Accessible: Tulip Valley Trail at O’Bannon Woods State Park

The Pioneer Farmstead at O'Bannon Woods State Park

Visit the Nature Center at O’Bannon Woods State Park for a mile-long looped hike on a gently sloping gravel path. Information and viewing stations along the way highlight the plants and animals you may encounter on the trail. Periodically, benches offer a place to rest.

See the O’Bannon Woods State Park Trail map for more information—this trail is marked as “B.”

Closest to Corydon: Indian Creek Trail

Indian Creek Trail credit Andrew Kennedy CVB ONLY (2)

This paved trail winds from the YMCA through downtown Corydon to Hayswood Nature Reserve . Walkers, runners, and bikers can immerse themselves in Corydon’s natural beauty with abundant foliage, a variety of wildlife, and scenic views of Indian Creek. You may be surprised by the wildlife you encounter so close to town, including blue heron, deer, and bald eagles.

A printed map is available at our visitor center .

Most Scenic: Hemlock Cliffs at the Hoosier National Forest

Hemlock Cliffs

Hemlock Cliffs is a box canyon of special beauty in southern Indiana. A cool climate, sandstone rock formations, and seasonal waterfalls are responsible for the unique trees and plants that grow here. The area features sandstone rock outcrops, overhangs, cliffs, rock shelters, and ravines.

Archaeological excavations indicate Native American occupation as early as 10,000 years ago. The head of the canyon is a large, semicircular rock shelter, which undoubtedly provided cover and defense to the early occupants of this area.

A one-mile hiking trail leads you down into the canyon under a lush canopy of large trees and past high seasonal waterfalls. Parts of the trail are steep and slippery when wet, so use caution. It could take two leisurely hours to complete the loop.

Most Challenging: Adventure Hiking Trail at O’Bannon Woods State Park

O'Bannon Woods State Park Adventure Trail (2)

The Adventure Hiking Trail (AHT) is a 25.5-mile rugged backpacking trail designed for the serious outdoor enthusiast. A National Recreation Trail and part of the American Discovery Trail , the AHT is one of Indiana’s longest, scenic, and most interesting backpacking experiences. It normally takes 2½ to 3 days to complete, with five overnight shelters available first-come, first-use. The trail is marked with green and white blazes. Day trips are also possible at several access points. Good physical condition, plenty of water, and proper equipment are necessities. For additional information, contact the park office .

Indiana Road Trip: 21 BEST Things to Do in So. Indiana [updated 2022]

June 15, 2016

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Driving through Indiana might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning a road trip, but it’s a route that definitely should be considered.  Road trips can be a ton of fun, especially when there are stops all along the way that blends together a mix of fun, good food, adventure, history, culture, and architecture.  Southern Indiana has all of these!  If driven straight through, this Indiana road trip would only take around four hours, but there are more than enough interesting stops to spend a day or more at each of the five main areas.

best places to visit in southern indiana

Each of the places below is only between one and three hours from Indianapolis. If you flying into or beginning from there, here are some fun things to do in Indianapolis .

Columbus, Indiana

1. miller house and gardens.

Miller House

The sunken living room of the Miller House

The Miller House is one of the finest expressions of American modernism — an integration of a bright and open floor plan home featuring stone and glass walls, skylights, and colorful textiles.  The compelling landscaping is concerned with the composition of shaping spaces… The house showcases the work of leading 20 th -century architects and designers: Eero Saarinen, Alexander Girard, and Dan Kiley.

2. Zaharokos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Old fashioned ice cream parlor

Step inside Zaharakos and you’re stepping back in time to an old-fashioned ice cream parlor with stained glass Tiffany lamps, carved oak, and marble, and a double soda fountain. There’s also a museum where you can learn about soda fountains and mechanical music after you finish their famous GOM spicy sloppy joe and cheese sandwich followed by their Tin Roof Sundae.

3. Downtown

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The manor houses have gorgeous courtyards!

Downtown Columbus is perfect for an afternoon stroll.  Stop in at the Bartholomew Public Library, admire the public sculptures and architecture of First Christian Church, or my favorite – peak through the wrought iron gates into the colorful manicured courtyards of the majestic historic homes.

Brown County

4. state park.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

A romantic spot to wait for the sunset.

The park is often called “Little Smokies” because of the resemblance to the Great Smoky Mountains.  The park encompasses nearly 16,000 acres of rugged hills, ridges, and ravines, and offers 20 miles of tree-lined roads, hiking trails, and scenic overlooks for some of Indiana’s best sunsets.

5. Nashville

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Downtown Nashville Visitor Center

Known as the “artist colony of the mid-west,” the charming village of Nashville is overflowing with pristine country shops selling original art, handmade crafts, and antiques. It’s one of the many charming small towns in Indiana .

Bloomington, IN

6. indiana university.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Indiana University

No Indiana road trip would be complete without a visit to Indiana University. Founded in 1820, the Bloomington campus is the flagship campus of IU’s eight campuses statewide, and the heart of the attractive college town.  The campus is beautiful, with historic architecture, rich history, and landscaped gardens and walkways.  Tours available.

7. Lilly Library

Lilly Library

And the Oscar goes to……

The Lily Library is a treasure of rare books, manuscripts, and special collections and well worth an hour or two of exploration.  Rare copies of (my favorite!) Alice in Wonderland are juxtaposed next to other old gems like a first printed collection of William Shakespeare’s plays, and a handwritten letter by Edgar Allen Poe. There was an official Oscar that everyone insisted I should hold (gloved) as it was only appropriate.  What??? I was caught off-guard, and blushed a bit, as you can see.

8. Hoosier Ridge Fire Tower

Southern Indiana Road Trip

123 steps to the top

The Hickory Ridge Lookout Tower stands guard over the Charles C. Deam Wilderness. It was originally built to protect the forest from wildfire.  The 100-foot steel structure was built in 1936 and was the last lookout tower for the Hoosier National Forest, manned until the 1970s.  It is no longer in use, but the adventurous can climb the 123 metal steps to the top for a spectacular panoramic view.

9. Four Winds Resort and Marina

Four Winds Resort

The marina and beach at Four Winds Resort

Four Winds is located on picturesque Lake Monroe, Indiana’s largest inland lake, about 15 minutes from downtown Bloomington. The boutique inn offers two restaurants, a private beach, an indoor/outdoor heated saltwater pool, boat and wave runner rentals, fitness center, tennis courts, basketball, and mini-golf. On the premises are also hiking and walking trails, picnic shelters, fishing, and boating.

10. Oliver Winery

Oliver Winery

The beautiful grounds at the winery.

Oliver Winery is Indiana’s oldest and largest winery with a distribution of their award-winning, fruit-forward wines to 18 states. They offer daily wine tasting and weekend tours of the production facility and cellar. The grounds are breathtakingly beautiful with walking paths to soak in the atmosphere as you enjoy a glass of your favorite wine. An assortment of gourmet picnic items are available, as well as gifts and accessories.

Dubois County

11. dubois county museum, jasper.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Mia and Caius Bender admire the animals in the museum.

47,000 sq. ft. Dubois Museum houses an extensive collection of regional collectibles, proudly curated by local volunteers who act as guides in period dress. The upper level is dedicated to military and sports, while the lower level hosts a full-size log cabin, agriculture equipment, German heritage, and a wildlife adventure room especially popular with children.

12. Jasper City Mill

Southern Indiana Road Trip

View of the mill’s water wheel

Stepping into the replica mill is like taking a step back in time. Visitors are invited to watch the process of corn being ground into cornmeal the old-fashioned way using a water wheel.  The Jasper City Mill is situated on the scenic 2.1-mile paved Riverwalk path along Patoka River, which is the best place to get a view of the working mill’s waterwheel.

13. Spirit of Jasper Passenger Train

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The dining car on the Spirit of Jasper.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to ride the rails as it was during its Golden Age, then climb aboard – for a journey or at least a tour – on the Spirit of Jasper .  The painstakingly restored train takes passengers on a luxurious and romantic dinner excursion through unspoiled Indiana countryside to fabulous French Lick.

14. Schnitzelbank

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The cozy interior of Schnitzelbank

Named as one of the Top 10 independent restaurants in Indiana, Schnitzelbank is a festive and delicious place to stop for a bite. The eatery has evolved into a destination in itself, dousing customers with its “Olde World” ambiance, delicious German dishes such as goulash, wiener schnitzel, bratwurst, and sauerbraten. To add to the fun, Sandra Chastain, decked out in traditional German garb, crooned out German folk songs while playing the accordion and then passed out song music we could all sing along.  No one went away hungry or unhappy!

15. French Lick Springs Resort

French Lick Springs Resort

The grand foyer of the French Lick Resort

Established in 1845, this upscale historic hotel is the winner of the 2015 USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Award for Best Historic Hotel. The French Lick Resort is the perfect blend of history with modern amenities and offers golf, spa, hiking, biking, swimming, tennis, or shopping.

16. Monastery of Immaculate Conception

Southern Indiana Road Trip

The monastery, perched majestically on the hillside.

Also known as the “Castle on the Hill,” the Monastery in Ferdinand is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Benedictine women who originally came from Germany to teach and run a boarding school. The highlight of the tour is Sister Christine, who guided us through the exquisite interior from her motorized wheelchair, regaling us with information as well as humorous stories of her youthful misadventures as a young Sister.

17. League Stadium

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Tom Hanks’ quote from the movie A League of Their Own

If you’ve seen the movie A League of Their Own with Geena Davis, Madonna, Tom Hanks, and Rosie O’Donnell, then you’ll recognize League Stadium in Huntingburg.  The stadium, built in 1894 was the setting for this fictionalized account of the Rockford Peaches and based on the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League , from 1943-1954.  Park Director Jim Rueger, who was an extra in the movie, told us that Coke, Columbia Studio, and Budweiser each paid one million dollars to advertise on the outfield billboards.

Southern Indiana Road Trip

Photo op outside of Snaps

Established in 1872 as “The First and Last Chance Saloon,” Snaps is a favorite with locals.  Snaps claims to hold the oldest liquor license in Dubois County and it was the first bar to be granted the honor one at the end of the prohibition. The fried gator snaps appetizers are a must-try.

Spencer County

18. abraham lincoln boyhood memorial.

Abraham Lincoln, one of the country’s most admired presidents, grew up and formed much of his character and morality in southern Indiana.  The memorial contains a typical 1980’s homestead on land owned by Thomas Lincoln, a visitor’s center with Lincoln exhibits, hiking trails, and memorials.

19. Saint Meinrad Archabby

The Benedictine tradition came to the Midwest in the 1850s when the Swiss Abbey of Einsiedeln sent two monks to Indiana to start a new foundation. Now, Meinrad Abbey is an active community of 90+ monks who pray, work, and live together. Tours of the beautiful grounds, historic buildings, and artifacts are available at reception.

I have never considered going to Indiana but your post certainly showed a lot of great sites and architecture….OK and food. Top of my list would be the Zaharokos Ice Cream Parlor and Museum for what else? A sundae! The Jasper Passenger train would be cool too.

Packing List When Visiting Indiana

If you are searching, here are some  tips on how to pack lightly when packing when heading to Indiana.

A  concealed travel pouch  may be one of the most important items you bring along when searching for things to do in Indiana.

It is  always   important  to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.

This  unisex RFID blocking concealed travel pouch is  lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind.

You can place it under your clothes next to your body to carry your ID safely.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with the RFID protection, as I do, these  RFID  sleeves  are the perfect solution.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an  external charging battery .

This  Anker high-speed phone charging battery  is  the exact one  I carry with me on all of my trips.

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this  FugeTek selfie stick and tripod   setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and is so easy to use.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking Insta-worthy selfies at all the Indiana activities you attend.

I never much believed in using packing cubes when traveling. That is until I tried them. Now I am hooked. These are the exact cubes I use to stay organized when I pack for a trip!

You will want to bring your own  refillable water bottle  with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my  Bobble filtration bottle .  The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for your adventures and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

The replaceable carbon filters ensure fresh drinking water whenever you want it.

Then this collapsible silicone foldable water bottle  would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a  backpack or daypack  with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc. No matter the time of day or evening.

This   foldable water-resistant backpack   would be great. And it comes in many different colors!

Not many people think of traveling to Indiana when they are thinking about exploring the Midwest.

But it’s a cool state where you can find plenty of fun things to do and see.

No matter the season or where you go, Indiana is a beautiful state just waiting to be explored. Including the many things to do in Evanston Indiana!

Have you been to any of these attractions in Indiana or are there any that you’d like to see?

If so, I’d love to hear about it in the comments!

5 Great Places to Visit in Southern Indiana

Activities , Magazine Features

Indiana

The landscapes get hilly in southern Indiana and the pace slows down a bit. Here are five ideas for your next trip to the lower half of Indiana

Brown County State Park

Set in rolling hills covered with hardwood forests, Indiana’s largest state park is one of the premier fall color meccas in the Midwest. Friends of the Park provides step-on guide service with stops at the Nature Center, Ramp Creek Covered Bridge, Abe Martin Lodge and scenic overviews. The lodge offers 84 guest rooms, an indoor waterpark and full-service restaurant, plus cabin accommodations.

Brown County State Park - Southern Indiana

The state park lies just south of Nashville, an art colony with more than 300 art galleries, studios and specialty shops, many of them in converted houses. Groups can spend hours shopping for crafts, antiques and fine art in downtown Nashville. Candy, ice cream and gourmet food shops also entice. The Brown County Playhouse presents music and comedy productions. Tours and tastings are available at Brown County Winery’s two locations and Bear Wallow Distillery. Nearby, the charming Story Inn, a hidden gem comprising what’s left of the tucked-away 19th century village of Story, offers fine dining in the old general store and 18 lodging rooms in several buildings.

At the center of this southern Indiana town stands the Old Capitol, which served as the first seat of government in Indiana from 1816-25. Not far away is the 1817 Governor Hendricks Headquarters, the two-story brick home of Indiana’s second governor. Also see the trunk of the Constitution Elm, under which the state’s constitution was drafted. Downtown Corydon shops offer crafts, collectibles and antiques.

Other group-friendly attractions include the Zimmerman Art Glass factory and Leora Brown School, where lessons in African-American history and the Underground Railroad come alive at one of the oldest former “colored” schools in the state. Several wineries offer tastings and tours, while Scout Mountain Winery has cooking classes for groups.

Cave Country

Southern Indiana is famous for its caves. Four of them, all within an easy drive from Corydon, offer tours. Guided walking tours of Marengo Cave, for example, include the 40-minute Crystal Palace tour and hour-long Dripstone Trail tour. Bluespring Caverns and Indiana Caverns can be visited by boat. At Squire Boone Caverns & Village in Mauckport, groups can combine a cave walk with demonstrations of pioneer skills like lye soap and candle making.

In Lincoln’s Footsteps

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial , 40 miles east of Evansville, is a 200-acre site that preserves the farm where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1816-30. The farm includes restored fields, a garden area and log buildings. The visitor center has exhibits and a 15-minute film on Lincoln’s 14 years in the state. Also on-site is the grave of Lincoln’s mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, who died when young Abe was 9 years old.

Nearby, in the town of Santa Claus, is Holiday World Theme Park and Splashin’ Safari Water Park. Holiday World, one of the country’s top-rated amusement parks, features wooden roller coasters, a whitewater raft ride, games, shows, and visits with Santa. Areas of the park are themed around Christmas, the Fourth of July, Halloween and Thanksgiving. In town, the huge Santa Claus Christmas Store, on Kringle Place, offers thousands of ornaments and other holiday items.

Ohio River Towns

Scenic vistas and historic towns draw visitors to southeastern Indiana. Madison, with Indiana’s largest historic district, is a well-preserved 19th century treasure and a favorite with antique hounds and shoppers of all stripes. Clifty Falls State Park, not far away, is known for its four waterfalls. Quaint downtown Aurora is brought to life by the “windows of Aurora”—64 murals that peek into what life was like in the 1800s.

From Hillforest Mansion, a Victorian house-museum, take in panoramic views of the Ohio River and the steeple-dotted “City of Spires.” Sister city Lawrenceburg, just a half hour west of Cincinnati, is home to the Hollywood Casino and Hotel.

10 Best Places to Visit in Indiana

' src=

Although it is often disparaged and overlooked for being ‘The Crossroads of America,’ Indiana has a lot going for it once you get off its busy interstates. Part of both the Midwestern and Great Lakes regions, it has numerous sides to it, with major cities such as Indianapolis and Fort Wayne found alongside Amish communities and lively college towns.

While the south of the state’s rugged hills and valleys are riddled with caves, caverns, and quarries, the northwest boasts the astounding landscapes and scenery of Indiana Dunes National Park.

Lovely countryside and farmlands are also on display, with important memorials and historic sights dotted about. Perfect for both city slicking and country living, this list of the best places to visit in Indiana certainly has something for everyone to enjoy.

10. Columbus

Columbus

Home to a large number of artistic and architectural treasures, the small city of Columbus can be found some 40 miles (60 kilometers) or so to the south of Indianapolis. Since the 1940s, phenomenal public and private buildings and artworks have sprung up around town, earning it the nickname ‘Athens on the Prairie.’

Over the years, renowned architects such as Cesar Pelli, IM Pei, and Richard Meier built a myriad of magnificent modern edifices – ranging from schools and hospitals to libraries and churches. Many of these delightful designs were commissioned by the Fortune 500 engine company Cummins, which is based in town. Seven of the buildings are recognized as National Historic Landmarks.

Besides the captivating and creative designs on display, the city also boasts many fantastic public art and sculptures which are dotted about its parks and shared spaces. A visually arresting place to visit, Columbus certainly lives up to its motto ‘Unexpected. Unforgettable.’

9. Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial

Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial

Tucked away in a remote and rural corner of the state, the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial protects and preserves the farm site on which the former president spent much of his childhood. From 1816 to 1830, the illustrious Abraham Lincoln lived here with his family, growing from a small seven-year-old boy into a twenty-one-year-old man.

Visitors to the memorial can now learn all about these fascinating and formative years at the site’s marvelous museum. Besides perusing several exhibits on the president and various artifacts and artworks relating to him, there is also a 16-minute film on the great man’s life in Indiana.

In addition to this, the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial also has a working pioneer farm where you can find the archaeological remains of the original Lincoln cabin. Here too is a wooden replica farmhouse, complete with costume-clad park rangers who cultivate crops, raise livestock, and teach visitors about life on the farm.

8. New Harmony

New Harmony

Set right in the southwest of the state, the small and sophisticated town of New Harmony lies on the banks of the Wabash River on the border with Illinois. The site of two attempted utopian communities, it was founded in 1814 by a German Christian sect before later being bought by the British social reformer Robert Owen.

Much of the town’s pietist past is still on show today; while walking around, you’ll come across important historical landmarks and elegant architecture. While many of its beautiful houses and churches were erected by the Harmonist and Owenite communities, others, such as the striking Roofless Church and Harmonist Labyrinth, date to more modern times.

Although neither of the utopian communities lasted long, the town’s residents did play an influential role in the fields of both science and education. Visitors can learn all about these accomplishments as well as New Harmony’s unique history at the Atheneum – an arresting, angular building that acts as the town’s visitor centre.

7. Amish Country

Amish Country

After Pennsylvania and Ohio, Indiana is home to the largest Amish population in the States, with lots of farms, families, and communities found around Shipshewana and Middlebury. While the nearby interstate is full of cars and lorries whizzing by, off the main roads, you’re more likely to see and hear horses and buggies passing by.

Visiting this pleasant and picturesque part of the state is like stepping back in time as you see members of the devout and distinctive religious community go about their lives. Wearing simple clothes and eschewing much of modern technology, the Amish work their fields themselves by hand or plough and build their own houses, barns and churches.

As they place a lot of value on rural life, humility, and manual labor, the Amish produce most of their food and necessities themselves. While traveling around the region, you’ll often come across families selling fresh produce and home-made household items; it is well worth stopping off to buy some before continuing on your way.

6. George Rogers Clark National Historical Park

George Rogers Clark National Historical Park

Lying on the banks of the Wabash River is the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, which commemorates the famous general’s career and the celebrated and successful Illinois Campaign. Set on the site of what is believed to be Fort Sackville, it is here that one of the most memorable feats of the American Revolution took place.

Respectively authorized and dedicated by Presidents Coolidge and Roosevelt, the circular memorial exhibits grand granite columns and a saucer dome, with the green gardens of the riverside park lying around it. Inside are seven exquisite murals depicting General Clark’s remarkable journey and his important victory over the British.

At the heart of the memorial is a brilliant bronze statue of a young Clark, which basks in the famous feats played out on the walls around him. Visitors can learn all about his life and campaigns through the adjacent visitor center’s exhibits, interactive displays, and a 30-minute film.

5. Bloomington

Bloomington

As it home to the main campus of Indiana University, Bloomington has a lively and youthful feel, with much of life in the city revolving around the institute and its sizeable student body. Lying around 80 kilometers to the southwest of Indianapolis, it is a very pretty and picturesque place to visit that boasts a thriving arts and culture scene.

While its art centers and university venues regularly put on theater productions and music shows, excellent art exhibitions can be enjoyed in its handful of museums. Courthouse Square is the central hub of activity: you can find university bookshops lying alongside relaxed bars and cafes and cheap restaurants serving up world cuisine. There is also a large Tibetan community in town if you want to go on a retreat or visit one of their monasteries and temples.

While Bloomington has more than enough to keep you entertained for a couple of days, the city is also known as the ‘Gateway to Scenic Southern Indiana’. This is due to the abundance of natural riches that lie nearby, with Lake Lemon, Lake Monroe, and Hoosier National Forest all offering superb outdoor recreation opportunities.

4. South Bend

South Bend

Set on the southernmost bend of the St. Joseph River, South Bend lies right in the north of the state, not far from the border with Michigan . Home to some large corporations and companies – and an important economic and cultural hub – the city is most known for the University of Notre Dame and its Fighting Irish football team.

Come game day, fanatical fans pack into its 77,000 seat stadium, which is strikingly presided over by a 40 meter-high mural known as Touchdown Jesus. While watching a match and taking in the festive atmosphere is a must when in South Bend , its enormous university campus also has lots of great art galleries and museums for visitors to check out.

Although Notre Dame and its wealth of sights attracts the most attention, in recent years, Downtown South Bend has spruced up a lot, with many renovations and refurbishments taking place. Now, its formerly dilapidated buildings house captivating cultural centers, cosy cafes, and exciting entertainment venues, with the Century Center one of its standout sights.

3. Indiana Dunes National Park

Indiana Dunes National Park

Running for almost 25 miles (40 kilometers) along Lake Michigan’s scenic southern shores, Indiana Dunes National Park protects a wealth of diverse and delightful landscapes and ecosystems. Easily accessible from Chicago, the state’s only national park is a very popular place due to its sublime scenery and plethora of beautiful beaches and hiking trails.

Only established in 2019, the park encompasses everything from huge dunes and expansive wetlands to prairies, rivers and forests, with lovely views to be enjoyed over the lake. Hidden away among the untouched natural bounties are many different species of fauna and flora, with bird watching very popular during the spring and autumn migrations.

The outstanding wilderness and natural beauty of the national park lends itself perfectly to all kinds of outdoor recreation activities. Besides hiking and swimming, visitors can go fishing and boating on the lake or horseback riding and camping alongside its wonderful rivers and forests.

2. Fort Wayne

Fort Wayne

The second-largest city in the state, Fort Wayne lies in the northeast of Indiana, not far from the border with Ohio. A lively yet laidback place, it is an important economic and cultural center, with lots for visitors to see and do in the city.

Founded way back in 1794 by the United States Army, the former fort has flourished into a sizeable city, with arresting architectural styles spied around town. Due to its abundance of Italianate, Greek Revival, and Postmodern buildings, it is well worth taking a tour of its numerous historical and cultural landmarks. Of these, two of the most impressive are the imposing Lincoln Bank Tower and spectacular Saint Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Away from its historical sights and architectural wonders, the city has some delightful outdoor spaces for visitors to enjoy. While you can stroll peacefully around gorgeous gardens and pretty plants at the botanical conservatory, Fort Wayne’s Children’s Zoo has more than 1,500 incredible animals on show, as well as some fun rides and attractions.

1. Indianapolis

Indianapolis

Set slap bang in the center of the state, Indianapolis lies on the banks of the White River and is the capital and largest city of Indiana. While it is known as the ‘Racing Capital of the World’ (it hosts the Indy 500 and Brickyard 400), there is much more to the city than just fast cars and fumes.

A mesmerizing mix of small-town Midwest community and large metropolitan city, Indianapolis boasts astounding architecture and magnificent monuments. Hidden away among its lofty skyscrapers, you can find historic and artsy districts home to world-class museums and countless restaurants and cafes serving food from all around the globe.

While Newfields’ extensive and exquisite art collection and the wonderful White River State Park are a treat to explore, Indianapolis’ standout symbol and sight is undoubtedly its Motor Speedway. Whether you are into racing or not, it is well worth going to one of its exhilarating events so that you can see what the city is all about.

Winter in Indiana is perhaps when the state is at its most beautiful. The south shore of Lake Michigan is one of the best places to go in the Indiana winter, as it is home to a number of ice skating rinks, while sporty people will also enjoy the chance to go cross-country skiing.

11. Hemlock Cliffs

Hemlock Cliffs

Hemlock Cliffs Falls is arguably the most beautiful spot in the whole of Indiana, with the falls located within the Hoosier National Forest. Many people heading to the falls use the Hemlock Cliffs National Scenic Trail, which is a little over a mile long and is accessible all year round. Hiking and camping are both very popular within Hoosier National Forest. Hemlock Cliffs is so named as the tall evergreen with short needles and small cones thrives in the forest.

12. Brown County

Brown County State Park, Indiana

Brown County is also one of the most beautiful locations in Indiana, with its mix of unincorporated communities and over 170,000 acres of forested land making it a great place to experience what Indiana is all about. Best places to see the 2024 solar eclipse in Chicago, according to our meteorologists

By Albert Ramon

Updated on: April 7, 2024 / 3:19 PM CDT / CBS Chicago

On Monday, April 8, 2024, North America is in for a treat: a total solar eclipse. This rare event will cross the continent, producing moments of darkness in the middle of the day.

The best places to see the solar eclipse depend on where you are.

Is Chicago in the solar eclipse's path of totality?

Chicago is in for a particularly enchanting experience, albeit a partial one.

solar-eclipse-2024.png

For the whole show, head south to southern Illinois.

The best places to see the solar eclipse in Illinois

Carbondale, Illinois, will be in the spotlight for maximum totality at 2:01 p.m., making it a hotspot for eclipse enthusiasts like yours truly, eager for an unobstructed view, weather permitting.

solar-eclipse-2024-path-3d.png

While Chicago won't be in the path of totality, it will still be a spectacular event.

In the city, the partial eclipse kicks off at 12:51 p.m., with the maximum at 2:07 p.m. and wrapping up at 3:22 p.m.

About 94% of the sun will be eclipsed during the maximum, casting a surreal glow across the city.

chicago-timeline.png

Meanwhile, downstate in Carbondale, it's a different story altogether.

They'll experience a total eclipse, with the partial beginning at 12:42 p.m., hitting maximum at 2:01 p.m., and wrapping up at 3:18 p.m.

Trust me, it's worth the five-hour drive for that 100% eclipse experience, and I'll be reporting live during our special coverage of the eclipse on CBS 2 and CBS News Chicago.

Looking for an event to view the eclipse? Here are some in the area and across the state.

Solar eclipse 2024: Photos from the path of totality and elsewhere in the U.S.

Images show the Great American Eclipse, seen by tens of millions of people in parts of Mexico, 15 U.S. states and eastern Canada for the first time since 2017.

Millions gathered across North America on Monday to bask in the glory of the Great American Eclipse — the moment when the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

The path of totality measures more than 100 miles wide and will first be visible on Mexico’s Pacific coast before moving northeast through Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois and upward toward New York, New Hampshire and Maine, then on to Canada.

Total solar eclipse 2024 highlights: Live coverage, videos and more

During the cosmic spectacle, the moon’s movements will temporarily block the sun’s light, creating minutes of darkness, and will make the sun's outer atmosphere, or the corona, visible as a glowing halo.

Here are moments of the celestial activities across the country:

Solar eclipse 2024: Follow the path of totality

Solar eclipse, what you need to know to watch monday's total solar eclipse.

The NPR Network

A stunning celestial event is visible across the country Monday, when the moon crosses directly in front of the sun: a total solar eclipse. For those in the path of totality, there will be a few brief moments when the moon completely covers the sun and the world becomes dark.

Traveling for totality? Skip ahead.

This will be the last chance to catch a total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. for about 20 years, so here's what you need to know to safely enjoy!

When is the eclipse?

April 8, 2024 there will be a total solar eclipse that crosses from the Pacific coast of Mexico through the United States.

What is totality and why it matters

According to NASA , totality will start around 11:07 a.m. PDT/1:07 EDT in Mexico and leave Maine at around 1:30 pm PDT/3:30 pm EDT.

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Here's what time the eclipse will be visible in your region

Check out this table for when the partial eclipse and totality are visible in each region or check by zip code here.

A partial solar eclipse will be visible across the contiguous United States, so even if you're not directly in the path, you should be able to see something special, weather permitting.

Unable to get to totality? We'll be sharing highlights here from across the NPR Network throughout the day Monday if you can't see it in real time.

Where to see totality?

More than 30 million people live in the path of totality for Monday's eclipse, and many more in nearby areas.

Here's what we know about Monday's weather forecast.

Why totality matters

As NPR's Neil Greenfieldboyce explains , "During a total eclipse, the sky darkens suddenly and dramatically . The temperature drops. Stars come out. Beautiful colors appear around the horizon. And the once-familiar sun becomes a black void in the sky surrounded by the glowing corona — that's the ghostly white ring that is the sun's atmosphere."

For April's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'OMG' might mean just driving across town

Eclipse Science

For april's eclipse, going from 'meh' to 'omg' might mean just driving across town.

A partial eclipse, while still a fun experience, is hardly as dramatic. Those with a view of the partial eclipse will see crescent-shaped shadows like those seen here in 2017.

How to watch safely

If you plan to look directly at the eclipse (partial or totality), you're going to need eclipse glasses handy because looking directly at the sun without proper protection ( traditional sunglasses don't count! ) can be harmful to your eyes.

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

The perfect celestial soundtrack to the total solar eclipse

As NPR's Joe Hernandez explains, "Proper eye protection must be worn throughout a total solar eclipse — except for the roughly 3 1/2 to 4 minutes when the moon fully obscures the sun, a brief period known as 'totality.' (You will need to take your glasses off during totality to actually see it.)"

If you don't have access to eclipse glasses, you can get crafty with things you have around the house ( like some of us did back in 2017!) More on that here.

Traveling for totality?

The celestial event is driving a ton of domestic travel to the path of totality. If you're headed out of town to view the eclipse, here are some NPR Network resources for areas in the path of totality:

Texas The path of totality crosses through the Lone Star State, with some areas expecting a possible influx of visitors in the hundreds of thousands to catch prime viewing. Our member stations across the state have gathered local resources to help you navigate the region and the eclipse!

  • San Antonio: Check out the latest from Texas Public Radio
  • Dallas: Explore KERA's coverage for the latest
  • Austin: Head to KUT for the best local resources

Arkansas The eclipse will be cutting through the state, putting Little Rock in the path of totality. Check out Little Rock Public Radio for local resources.

The southwestern edge of the state will be well-positioned to witness the total solar eclipse this year. Kentucky Public Radio is covering the eclipse throughout the region, from Kentuckiana eclipse mania to the University of Louisville's free class about the celestial event. Keep an eye on WKMS for the latest local updates.

Missouri The southeastern corner of the state will be in the path of totality, crossing across towns like Whitewater and Ste. Genevieve. Head to St. Louis Public Radio for local coverage and resources. Illinois Carbondale seems to have won the eclipse lottery, being in the path of totality both in 2017 and for this year's eclipse . For resources from across the state, check out Illinois Public Media .

Indiana A huge portion of the state will be within the path of totality, giving cities across Indiana, including Bloomington and Indianapolis, prime viewing of the eclipse.

  • Bloomington: Check out Indiana Public Media
  • Indianapolis: Head to WFYI for the latest
  • Fort Wayne: Just north of the path of totality, WBOI has resources for the Allen County area

Ohio The Buckeye State is getting bisected by this year's path of totality, plunging a number of the state's most populous areas into darkness for a few minutes on Monday.

  • Cleveland: Head to Ideastream Public Media for the latest.
  • Columbus: With the capital city just south of totality, head to WOSU for regional resources.
  • Cincinnati: Totality will just miss the border town. Here are some tips from WVXU on how to navigate the eclipse in the region.

Pennsylvania Only the northwestern-most corner of the state will catch totality, with views from the lakeside in Erie being particularly well-positioned for a stunning viewing experience. WESA has more from across the region.

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

Plan to watch the eclipse from a wild mountain summit? Be ready for harsh conditions

New York Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Plattsburgh will fall under the path of totality on Monday. If you're planning to travel to the region for the best views, here are some local resources to stay safe and informed:

  • Buffalo: Head to WBFO for the latest
  • Syracuse: WAER has more on plans in the Salt City
  • North Country: NCPR has the latest from across the region, as well as information on local viewing events to check out

Vermont The Green Mountain State will see totality across its most populous region, including Burlington and Montpelier, as well as the Northeast Kingdom on the Canadian border. Vermont Public has everything you need to know to navigate your time in the region to enjoy the eclipse safely. New Hampshire The northernmost region of the Granite State will be in the path of totality, providing prime viewing to those in Coos County. NHPR has info on local events, travel updates as well as special coverage with New Hampshire Public Television. Maine The last state in the path of totality in the U.S., much of Northern Maine will be positioned for prime viewing. The rural region is preparing for an influx of visitors, and safety officials are encouraging visitors and locals alike to be prepared. Maine Public will be covering the eclipse and has everything you need to know to navigate the region safely.

How to document the eclipse safely

With the ease of cell photography , it can be tempting to reach for your phone to document the eclipse and the moments of totality, but make sure to do so safely.

As NPR's Scott Neuman explains , "For starters, you'll need to wear eclipse glasses or similar protective eye gear while aiming your camera or even just observing the eclipse."

Feeling ambitious? Here are a few more tips.

Or if you're not inclined to capture the moment visually, you lean into some other forms of creative expression. Indiana, for example, has named Linda Neal Reising the official poet in the state for this year's eclipse.

As former NPR reporter and eclipse superfan David Baron shared with Life Kit , viewing totality "[is] like you've left the solar system and are looking back from some other world."

So consider focusing on being present in the moment to enjoy the celestial spectacle.
