Ahh, yes, the Sport Utility Vehicle. SUVs were once a welcome addition to the American marketplace, helping to fill the gap between the family station wagon and the sketchy windowless van or Uncle Charlie’s smelly old pickup truck. SUVs have been around since the 1940s with the Willys Jeep Station Wagon but really didn’t hit their stride until the heydays of 1990s excess, when low gas prices made it okay to get 12 miles per gallon in your Chevy Suburban. Since then, SUVs have evolved into their own genre of vehicle. There are small SUVs, large SUVs, crossover SUVs, compact crossover SUVs, luxury SUVs, SUVs with a third row, seven-passenger SUVs, SUVs with great gas mileage, hybrid SUVs, the list goes on and on.

Lately, all the rage has been over crossover SUVs, which act as a hybrid between a car and an SUV, giving you the interior space of an SUV without the hauling capacity. Traditionally, SUVs use body-on-frame construction, similar to what you see in a pickup truck. Crossovers tend to have unibody construction, similar to the way cars are made.

But, which SUV is the best SUV? That’s a very broad question as SUVs come in all shapes and sizes. What may be the best SUV for me may not be the best SUV for you. In order to try and tackle this question, we need to break down the many different styles of SUVs available. Of course, feel free to share what you believe is the best SUV in the comments below.

Best Small SUV

Honda cr-v  $24,045.

Could there be any other? Honda’s taken the crown in the compact SUV market for years. Its formula is rather simple: Make reliable cars with intuitive gadgetry at a fair price. It’s the reason why you can’t drive two blocks without coming across one. It’s also the reason why the CR-V is constantly bringing home the heavy hardware in the form of awards for being the best SUV year in and year out. It’s not exactly the car that you’re going to do stunts with at the club, but by the time you get one, your clubbing days will be long behind you.

A fully-loaded CR-V will only set you back a shade more than $34,000. With it, you get all of Honda’s driver-assists including Lane Keeping Assist, Blind Spot Info, Lane Departure Warning and Collision-Mitgating Braking. This year’s model snatches the crown of best small SUV after a facelift from last year. More cabin space and power this year helped the CR-V become the best small SUV.

Best Midsize SUV

Tesla model x  $79,500.

Come on, you have to like the Model X. I mean, those doors. And who doesn’t love screaming down the road with a zero-to-60 time of 2.9 seconds. That’s right, Becky, not only can you fire through that Starbucks drive-through in style in the best midsize SUV, but you’ll be doing it in an SUV that  can blow the doors off a Lambo .

The range on the Model X is 295 miles, allowing you to be the coolest soccer mom on the planet. You can even have it fitted to comfortably seat seven adults. It’s no show-pony either, you can even take the  best midsize SUV off-road. Although I’m sure most drivers stick to suburban streets. The Model X starts at $79,500. 

Best Large SUV

Land rover range rover  $85,650.

You got to come and take the crown of best large SUV from the Range Rover. The newest Range Rover flagship represents everything you’d want from the best large SUV, with a luxurious interior, neat gadgetry, and a hulking, powerful engine. If you ask The Drive editor Mike Guy, Range Rover  makes “the best SUV in the world.” After checking out this latest model, it’s hard to argue. It also comes with a large price tag, starting at $85,650.

This last model was a mid-cycle refresh , giving the best large SUV a new headlight and grille combo, new LED taillights, wider exhaust pipes, a two-screen infotainment setup and a suite of backseat tech additions. That means last year, the best large SUV just got that much better.

Best Gas Mileage SUV

Chrysler pacifica hybrid  $41,995.

This gets a little tricky here for a few reasons. First, finding a best gas mileage SUV in the day and age of electric cars is strange. I felt that choosing an all-electric vehicle would be cheating. Second, I didn’t feel like naming the smallest hybrid the best gas mileage SUV worked either. Here the $41,995 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid gives you plenty of size, great gas mileage and an  option to go “all-electric” while still having a gas tank .

The Pacifica is a plug-in hybrid, which means you can charge it up in your garage at home and hit the streets in all-electric mode. Granted, the all-electric range is only 33 miles, but that should be enough to get you to the gas pump. With a full tank and a full battery, the Pacifica gets the equivalent of 84 miles per gallon, making it the best gas mileage SUV.

Volvo XC90  $45,750

Those Scandinavians are known for minimalist furniture, great meatballs, and safe cars. It should come as no surprise that the safest SUV on the market comes from Volvo. The company has said that, by 2020, no one would be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo. If that’s just marketing, it’s brilliant, and if it’s truly altruistic in nature it’s even better. Either way, the Volvo XC90 is packed with safety features from its ultra-strength steel to its front crash prevention system.

The XC90’S City Safety feature is a system to detect pedestrians and cyclists while you’re cruising in urban areas. Not only does the feature alert drivers to people in the area, it will automatically apply the brakes if the driver doesn’t react in time. There is also a rear collision warning system that uses radar to determine whether you’re about to get rear-ended. The system then tenses up your seatbelts and applies the brakes to stop the SUV from crashing into whatever’s in front of it. The XC90 is also  the king of crash tests , proving, once again, that it’s the safest SUV. The Volvo XC90 starts at $45,750.

Best Luxury SUV

Lincoln navigator  $63,515.

That’s right, the Navigator is back! Rappers must be delighted. The best SUV of the early 2000s is back with a vengeance. The black label treatment from Lincoln takes luxury to a new level. You can even get it decked out in a trim called “Yacht Club.” In terms of luxury, this may become the best large SUV on the market.

This is the year that the Navigator " shakes off the old guy image ." It’s modern, it’s plush, it’s gorgeous. Everything you’d want to see from the ultimate in luxury. And the exterior with the imposing new grille from Lincoln adds a certain dramatic flair. The new Navigator starts at $63,515. 

Best Hybrid SUV

Lexus rx 450h  $53,035.

The Lexus RX hybrid SUV has helped Toyota Motor Company lead global hybrid sales with more than 10 million in total sales. The first Lexus RX hybrid SUV hit the U.S. in 2005 with the RX 400H as part of the second-generation RX. This fourth-generation RX has been around since 2015. Next year customers are going to get what they always wanted from the best hybrid SUV… a third row .

The RX 450H has sleek styling to go along with 31 miles per gallon in the city. The all-wheel-drive SUV comes with Lexus’ electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission or ECVT. The RX 450h starts at $53.035, making it almost $10k more expensive than the best-selling RX 350. You can add a panoramic moonroof, hands-free power liftgate, 360-degree camera and a 15-speaker sound system if you want to pack the best hybrid SUV to the gills.

Best Family SUV

Honda pilot  $47,470.

The title of best family SUV has to go  to the Honda Pilot . The big brother of the CR-V is at the top of the list of best SUVs to buy each year. The Pilot comes in five different trim packages from a two-wheel drive LX priced at $30,900 all the way up to the all-wheel-drive Elite unit for $47,470.

Just wait til the  VTEC kicks in yo! The Pilot comes with a 3.5-liter, direct-injected i-VTEC V6 with variable cylinder management. That gives the best family SUV 280 horsepower to go along with 262 pound-feet of torque. The power is delivered through your choice of a six-speed or nine-speed automatic transmission.

Best Three-Row SUV

Acura mdx  $44,050.

If you like the Hondas you’ve got to love the Acura right? I mean, it’s a Honda with leather! There’s much more to the MDX here. The Sport Hybrid model shares part of its drivetrain with  the latest NSX supercar . Two electric motors can send up to 72 horsepower to either or both rear wheels to help supplement the V6 engine. It makes the MDX Sport Hybrid a swift, nimble and very agile SUV for its size .

You don’t have to spring for the 321-horsepower Sport Hybrid model to appreciate the MDX line. If you’re looking for the best three-row SUV, obviously you’re carrying some precious cargo. The Acura MDX has a five-star overall safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, also ranking it among the safest SUVs on the market today. The base model starts at $44,050. 

Best Crossover SUV

Subaru crosstrek  $21,695.

This little Subaru is no joke. Several outlets have named the Crosstrek the best crossover SUV. Here, when I say best crossover SUV, I basically mean the best lifted hatchback. Crossover SUVs are like little guys with Napoleonic complexes that puff up their chests. Maybe not the guy you want to hang out with at the local sports bar, but it makes for one heck of an automobile. The Crosstrek is so capable, it’s even  been in the Baja 500.

Built on the same platform as the Impreza, the Crosstrek can be had with a manual transmission, instantly making it way cooler than 90 percent of the crossovers out there. The top “Limited” trim package gets you a 6.5-inch infotainment system, Subaru’s “Starlink” connected service, heated front seats and mirrors, keyless entry with push-button start, headlights that swivel when turning, and 18-inch wheels. All this comes with a price tag of only $26,295. There’s one catch though. You have to give up the manual transmission in the top trim on the best crossover SUV.

Most Reliable SUV

Toyota rav4  $24,410.

A brand with legendary reliability naturally makes the most reliable SUV. It’s a tough contest with competition from Honda, Nissan, and even GMC. The Toyota RAV4 has consistently been one of the most reliable cars on the road since it’s introduction in 1996. My sister had a RAV4 that lasted 200,000 miles until the transmission blew up. Even then, the motor ran like a top. More than 90 percent of RAV4s sold in the 10 ten years are still on the road today .

The RAV4 comes with a bullet-proof 2.5-liter four-cylinder naturally-aspirated engine pumping out 176 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque. No turbo, no direct injection, just the most reliable SUV money can buy. And it won’t take too much money either, as the most reliable SUV can be had for the modest sum of $24,410 brand new.

Best Performance SUV

Jeep grand cherokee trackhawk  $86,995.

If you ask Jeep, it’s the quickest SUV ever , thanks in part to a 707-horsepower engine it shares with the Hellcat. This helps catapult the SUV through the quarter-mile in 11.6 seconds.  To give you some perspective, that’s faster than a  2018 Chevy Corvette Grand Sport . It gives a whole new meaning to grocery getter.  Of course, you don’t have to get the best performance SUV when you buy a Grand Cherokee. The base model comes with less than 300 horsepower.

But this is the “go big or go home” section here. The category of best performance SUV has seen competition lately with the Porsche Cayenne Turbo S and the upcoming Lamborghini Urus. With a supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V8, Brembo Brakes and race-inspired seating, the Trackhawk is still the best performance SUV on the market. And if 707 horsepower isn’t enough, take it to Hennessey to get some four-figure force . Prepare to shell out a few bucks for the high horsepower Trackhawk. The package starts at $86,995.

2018 Ford Expedition Review: King of the Road Trip

The massive ford expedition is best suited for the open highway, with family onboard and trailer in tow, sharing is nice.

2018 Ford Expedition

The Ford Expedition makes a leap forward with this redesign, shedding weight while adding comfort, convenience, and optional safety features.

The extended-length version we tested measures about a foot longer than the standard Expedition and competes directly against the Chevrolet Suburban . That extra size allows for significant cargo space behind the adult-friendly third-row seat, but it also makes parking a challenge.

The 375-hp, 3.5-liter turbocharged V6 engine catapults this coach easily. Maximum towing capacity is a competitive 9,300 pounds­, enough to pull a large trailer. Overall fuel economy is up 2 mpg to 16, typical for this thirsty class.

The ride is composed but on the stiff side—definitely not as comfortable as other three-row SUVs such as the Chevrolet Traverse . The Expedition has ponderous handling but remains under control even when pushed to its limits.

The Expedition's optional retractable running boards are helpful given the step-in height. The driver's seat is like sitting in a living room reading chair. The controls are simple to use, including the rotary dial gear selector.

It has plenty of room in the second row, as well as dedicated climate controls and storage.

Forward-collision warning and automatic braking aren't standard equipment, despite the premium price.

The 2018 Ford Expedition Is the Best SUV I’ve Driven

Big SUVs are a necessity for some families. Finally, they drive as well as they haul.

Big SUVs have always been something of a necessary evil. Their massive proportions mean they can do jobs no other vehicle can do. But their size and truck-like construction have also made them awful to drive and sketchy in bad weather and off-road.

This all-new Ford Expedition is different.

What Is It?

Like the Chevy Suburban/Tahoe/Cadillac Escalade/GMC Yukon (behind the badges, the four are essentially identical) or Toyota Sequoia, the Expedition is a full-size, three-row, body-on-frame SUV. A truck, if you will. Compared to its competitors, the Expedition does three major things differently:

  • Like the F-150 it’s based on, the Expedition uses a high-tech aluminum body to save weight.
  • Rather than a solid axle, the Expedition has independent rear suspension.
  • Rather than a large V8, the Expedition is equipped with a twin-turbo, 3.5-liter V6.

Those differences add up to a truck that’s faster, more fuel efficient, more refined, more spacious, and better handling than anything that’s existed in this class before.

This all-new 2018 Expedition is four inches longer and nearly five inches wider than the model it replaces, yet this new one weighs between 5,433 (2WD, short wheelbase) and 5,692 pounds (4WD, long wheelbase), compared to the old truck’s 5,562 and 5,789 pounds, respectively. The heaviest Expedition is 116 pounds lighter than the heaviest Suburban and 308 pounds lighter than the heaviest Sequoia.

The independent rear suspension improves the Expedition’s ride quality, handling, and interior space. Heavy solid axles require the suspension to work very hard, as all that weight moves up and down, leading to a bumpy ride. Independent suspension reduces unsprung weight and better isolates suspension movements, leading to a smoother ride and sharper handling. It also packages smaller. Without the need for suspension towers that eat up interior space, the floor can also be lower. This adds up to more than 40 inches of legroom for occupants in all three rows of seats in both short and long wheelbase configurations. Regardless of wheelbase, this new Expedition also has room behind the second row for a stack of four-by-eight-foot sheets of plywood.

Ford’s twin-turbo V6 is the best truck motor going right now. Paired with the excellent ten-speed automatic that Ford co-developed with General Motors, it’s incredibly torquey and satisfying to use. Despite having two fewer cylinders than a traditional V8 and a smaller capacity, it actually feels much stronger than the engines of its competitors. Paired with the weight-reducing aluminum body, it also returns better fuel economy.

Where a 4WD Chevy Suburban makes 355 horsepower and 383 pound-feet of torque and returns 15 mpg (city) and 22 mpg (highway), the lighter, more spacious Expedition makes 375 to 400 horsepower (depending on options) and 470 to 480 pound-feet of torque and returns 16 mpg (city) and 24 mpg (highway). Given the massive torque advantage and the larger interior, the superior fuel economy is really impressive.

Did I mention the snow? Had we had proper winter tires, this would be the best vehicle I've ever driven in the snow. As it stands on stock all-seasons, it was still pretty impressive.

Who Is It For?

As soon as we post a review of a full-size SUV, I’m sure someone will take to social media to flame us for destroying the planet. And while that person would be absolutely correct that a vehicle like this consumes dead dinosaurs at a frightening rate, he’d also miss the fact that an awful lot of people actually need a vehicle like the Expedition.

Have more than two kids and want to take them skiing? The Expedition will carry a large family and their stuff in comfort, through challenging winter weather, better than anything else on sale today.

Have more than one large dog? You’ll be able to fit them in the Expedition, along with all your camping gear, then take off for Baja.

Have a family and something like a horse, boat, or trailer? The Expedition can tow more than 9,000 pounds while providing luxurious seating for eight adults.

In terms of supporting outdoor adventures, no other vehicle but a full-size pickup will prove this useful. In fact, the biggest challenge potential customers will face is whether to buy an Expedition or an F-150. The determining factor is almost certainly going to be their number of children, furry or otherwise.

In Platinum trim, this is hands down one of the nicest car interiors I've ever seen.

Leave the Expedition in a parking lot full of Suburbans, Tahoes, Yukons, and Escalades and you better hope you picked a bright color or you’re going to have a hard time finding your truck. The Expedition looks bizarrely similar in shape, proportion, and detail to GM’s rivals—its LED daytime running lights are even identical to those of the Chevy.

Inside though, things couldn’t get more different. Rather than mistaking the Expedition’s interior for another domestic, you’ll find yourself making comparisons to brands like Land Rover, Mercedes, and Porsche.

While the Expedition is based on the frame of the F-150, its interior borrows heavily from the larger, nicer Super Duty. It’s incredibly spacious inside, and even the base XLT trim level (starting at $51,695) uses nice materials and is generously equipped. You can spend up to $80,865 on an Expedition if you want the long wheelbase, the nicest equipment levels, and four-wheel drive. Do so and you’ll be rewarded with a host of semiautonomous driving features, adaptive damping shocks, real wood trim, and leather seats as nice as anything out there.

But we’d choose the $62,155 FX4 model. Starting with the basic XLT, it adds stiffer shock absorbers, all-terrain tires, skid plates, and, most important, low-range gears, all designed to boost the truck’s off-road ability. It’d make an incredibly comfortable, spacious basis for an overland build. All it’s lacking is decent rubber.

It's easy to see the potential in the FX4 model. Better, larger tires, some protection parts, maybe a Frontrunner roof rack...this thing could be awesome.

Over Christmas, my girlfriend, our two dogs, and I took the Expedition (a Platinum 4×4 model) on a two-week, 3,500-mile road trip from our home in Southern California to a family cabin in northern Montana and back.

On the highway, the Expedition is as smooth and luxurious as any luxury sedan I’ve driven. Set the adaptive cruise control to 85 miles per hour, keep your hands on the wheel, decide what level of heating, cooling, or massaging your butt desires, and you’ll arrive at your destination before you know it.

In congested urban traffic, the Expedition proves remarkably handy despite its gigantic proportions. Thank excellent outward vision from the large glasshouse for that, as well as the responsive engine, transmission, and brakes. We had to fight rush-hour traffic out of L.A. and into San Francisco one day, and the Expedition was able to carve its way through lane hogs and distracted drivers as well as anything I’ve driven.

On mixed snow, slush, and ice through the mountains, the Expedition proved incredibly sure-footed despite wearing a positively awful set of all-season tires. Its excellent stability control system combines with the automatic four-wheel drive to keep the truck planted even on slippery, changing surfaces.

We encountered deeper, unplowed snow on the dirt road leading to the cabin. I’d brought chains for just this scenario but was very surprised when the Expedition was able to make sure progress without them. Like a high-end Land Rover, this Ford is fitted with a Terrain Management system that tweaks individual brake calipers to prevent wheel spin in low-traction conditions like this. It also automatically actuates the four-wheel drive’s transfer case and alters throttle response and the gearbox’s shift algorithm.

That’s what enabled us to tackle the trip’s most challenging obstacle: a steep, 200-yard driveway that dropped down from the road to the lakeside cabin. It was totally snowed in, yet the Hill Descent Control walked us down it in total control, and the Terrain Management system managed to find just enough traction for us to full throttle back up it a week later, in even deeper snow, without fitting the chains.

On our way home, we decided to visit our favorite hot springs in Death Valley. That meant 100 miles of challenging dirt road with patches of snow and ice. Despite its length, girth, and relative lack of clearance, the Expedition couldn’t have made it easier. We slept in it that night on our luxury two-person sleep system (technically a full-size mattress). Even with the dogs, there was plenty of room.

The one thing the Expedition could have used in all those circumstances was a better set of tires. The cheap all-seasons Ford specs on this thing are fine on dry roads but don’t have a huge amount of traction in the wet, getting in the way of outright braking capability. The trouble is similar in winter weather, where the impressive vehicular capability makes up for the tires’ lack of traction but can obviously do nothing to add grip for braking. Off-road, I constantly worried about getting punctures, had to pick lines specifically to be kind to the tires, and struggled to climb relatively moderate hills if the surface was at all loose. A quality snow-rated all-terrain tire like the BF Goodrich K02 would address all these issues without adversely affecting fuel economy or noise levels. If I were buying one of these, I’d negotiate with the dealer so I left the lot with a set already fitted. The only thing the stock tires are good for is netting Ford a good Corporate Average Fuel Economy number.

Because the cabin was so remote and receiving such extreme weather (it was minus 26 degrees Fahrenheit one day), because we had the dogs with us, and because we wanted to do some camping on the way back, we had to carry a ton of stuff with us. Vehicle recovery gear, a big shovel, an air compressor, a tire repair kit, 50 pounds of dog food, winter clothing, snow shoes…you get the idea. Because we had the Expedition, we never had to make a choice between taking something and leaving it behind. The dogs had more than enough space, we were spoiled, and rearward vision was unencumbered. No other vehicle could have made this trip so easily.

Two people, two big dogs, and all the stuff we needed on all the terrain we had to cross? No problem.

  • Luxury sedan–quality ride.
  • Hot-rod performance.
  • Silent interior.
  • You really can fit adults in the back row. Really, with headroom, knee room, and everything.
  • Excellent Terrain Management system takes the guesswork out of finding traction.
  • Loooooooonnnnnnnngggggg passenger doors and tip/slide second-row seats making rear-row access easy.
  • Relatively small 23.3-gallon tank limits fuel range to under 400 miles. Carry a jerry can off-road.
  • Like most vehicles, the stock tires are simply terrible.
  • Easily confused with the GM rivals.

The park was closed, and the surrounding area was totally empty. Perfect.

Should You Buy One?

Ford Expedition

The 2024 Ford Expedition is a full-size three-row SUV with a $55,525 starting price and 10 trims: XL STX, XLT, XLT Max, Limited, Limited Max, Timberline, King Ranch, King Ranch Max, Platinum, and Platinum Max. The entire lineup uses a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

In the XL STX and XLT trims, the engine produces 380 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. For the Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims, the performance increases to 400 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. The Timberline trim gets a high output tune, which helps it produce 440 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. Rear wheel drive is standard on all Expedition trims, except the Timberline, which features an intelligent four-wheel drive system. Fortunately, Ford also offers the intelligent four-wheel drive option in all trims. 

With the EcoBoost powertrain, the Expedition has a fuel economy rating of 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. In addition, the Expedition also has an impressive five-star NHTSA overall safety rating. The rating encompasses a five-star overall front rating, a five-star overall side rating, and a four-star rollover rating. Ford offers many standard features to enhance the Expedition's safety, including rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, a 360-degree view camera, front-seat side impact airbags, and dual-stage front airbags.

Genesis GV80

The Genesis GV80 is one of the coolest SUVs of 2024 , thanks to its athletic powertrain, three-row cabin, and a long list of luxury features. For the 2024 model year, the GV80 has a starting price of $57,700 and a selection of two powertrains. The base versions feature a turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 300 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque. Fortunately, Genesis offers a more powerful 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 with 375 hp and 391 lb-ft of torque. Both engines pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels as standard.

While these engines aren't the most powerful in an SUV, they boast notable fuel economy ratings. The base four-cylinder GV80 has a fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. On the other hand, the V6 also has great fuel economy ratings of 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.

In addition to its performance and fuel economy, the GV80 has a comfortable interior that can accommodate up to seven passengers. It boasts a passenger volume of 108.7 cu. ft and a cargo volume of 34.9 or 11.6 cu. ft behind the second or third rows. As for safety, the 2024 Genesis GV80 has a five-star NHTSA overall safety rating and plenty of standard features. They include blind spot monitoring, parking collision avoidance assist, remote smart parking assist, and surround view monitor. The GV80 also earns a Top Safety Pick+ IIHS rating thanks to these advanced safety features.

Honda Pilot

The Honda Pilot is a three-row midsize SUV ideal for families thanks to its roomy cabin and great starting price of $37,090 for the 2024 model year. The Pilot lineup has six trims: LX, Sport, EX-L, TrailSport, Touring, and Elite. The lineup boasts a well-thought-out interior with plenty of legroom in the second and third rows -- 40.8 and 32.5 inches, respectively. Honda also offers unique features like removable second-row middle seats and second-row captain's chairs on some trims.

Powering the Honda Pilot is a 3.5-liter V6 with 285 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The engine pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission, powering the front wheels as standard. However, Honda also offers optional all-wheel drive on some trims. While this isn't the most powerful V6 in its class, the Pilot boasts an impressive fuel economy rating of 19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined.

In addition, the Honda Pilot promises to offer its buyers additional peace of mind thanks to its standard Honda Sensing safety suite and driver assistance technologies. These include a blind spot information system, improved front side airbags, cross traffic monitor, and a next-generation front passenger airbag. Besides its impressive safety technology, the 2024 Honda Pilot has a respectable five-star NHTSA overall safety rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating.

Hyundai Palisade

The Hyundai Palisade is the brand's largest SUV with three-row seating. While it shares its underpinnings with the Kia Telluride, the 2024 Hyundai Palisade offers a compelling balance of luxury and value, boasting a competitive $36,650 starting price that rises through its six trims: SE, SEL, XRT, Limited, Calligraphy, and Calligraphy Night. These models feature a high-class interior with spacious second and third rows. While the base version features a second-row bench seat, higher trims offer more comfortable captain's chairs.

However, despite the seating configuration, the rows have generous legroom, with the second and third rows boasting 42.4 and 31.4 inches, respectively. In addition, the Palisade offers a cargo capacity of 18 cu. ft behind the third row and 45.8 cu. ft behind the second row. All Palisade models use a 3.8-liter V6 with 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission, sending power to the front wheels, although an optional all-wheel drive configuration is available. 

In its standard configuration, the Palisade has a fuel economy rating of 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. While not quite as efficient as the base Mazda CX-90, the Palisade is still a great vehicle for family road trips, managing a total range of 414 miles on a single tank. Additionally, the Palisade doesn't compromise when it comes to protecting its passengers. Safety technologies include rear-side impact airbags, forward collision avoidance assist, safe exit assist, reverse parking collision avoidance assist, lane following assist, and driver attention warning. Hyundai's enhanced safety measures help the Palisade earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating.

Kia Telluride

The 2024 Kia Telluride is a surprisingly capable midsize three-row SUV with an upscale interior, a low $36,190 starting price, and innovative tech. The 2024 Telluride has 10 trim options, all with a naturally aspirated 3.8-liter V6 with 291 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. The engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission, powering the front wheels as standard. Kia also offers optional all-wheel drive across the lineup.

While the Telluride isn't the most powerful midsize SUV, it boasts better fuel economy than some of its rivals. The base front-wheel-drive variant has a fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. Despite offering a better driving experience, the AWD variant has a lower rating of 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.

In addition, the Telluride has many achievements, including an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating and a five-star NHTSA overall safety rating thanks to the Telluride's advanced technology and safety features. As standard, the Telluride offers buyers a surround-view monitor, blind spot view monitor, smart cruise control, rear cross-traffic avoidance assist, navigation-based smart cruise control, and lane following assist. Its upscale interior also has plenty of features, including a first-class second row with heated and ventilated captain's chairs.

Lincoln Aviator

The 2024 Lincoln Aviator is a three-row midsize luxury SUV that competes with models like the Genesis GV80. The 2024 Aviator has a slightly lower starting price of $53,340 for the base Premier trim, which has many standard features like automatic emergency braking, dynamic brake support, pedestrian detection, forward collision warning, and a rearview camera. While Lincoln only offers three Aviator trims -- Premier, Reserve, and Black Label -- the lineup uses a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine with 400 hp and 415 lb-ft of torque. This helps make the Aviator one of the most powerful V6-powered luxury SUVs on the market.

The V6 pairs with a 10-speed automatic transmission, powering the rear wheels as standard. Fortunately, Lincoln also offers optional all-wheel drive. The standard drivetrain (RWD) delivers the best fuel economy figures: 18 mpg city, 26 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The all-wheel drive variants lag slightly behind, with 17 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.

The Aviator also promises a safe cabin with dual-stage front airbags, side curtain airbags, front seat-mounted side impact airbags, a driver's knee airbag, and a glove box door integrated knee airbag. All these systems help it earn a five-star NHTSA overall safety rating. Furthermore, the Aviator's interior cocoons the occupants in luxury, boasting comfortable power-adjustable front seats, Lincoln soft-touch materials, heated first-row seats, and Lincoln's premium audio system.

Mazda CX-90

The CX-90 is Mazda's flagship three-row SUV built on the brand's all-new large platform. It boasts longer proportions, a refined interior, and potent powertrains. For the 2024 model year, the Mazda CX-90 has a $37,845 starting price and eight trims: Select, Preferred, Preferred Plus, Premium, Premium Plus, S, S Premium, and S Premium Plus. The CX-90 lineup offers a refined interior with up to eight-passenger capacity complemented by advanced technologies like blind spot monitoring, smart brake support, and radar cruise control. The CX-90 also includes a 12.3-inch infotainment screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

Powering the CX-90 lineup is an all-new mild hybrid 3.3 liter turbocharged inline-6 engine. The engine produces 340 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, giving the CX-90 a smooth driving experience. Thanks to the mild hybrid setup, the inline-six engine delivers better fuel economy than many of the CX-90's rivals, offering 24 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. Mazda also offers a plug-in hybrid powertrain that combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 323 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. These powertrains pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, powering all four wheels. 

While the powertrains help make the CX-90 ideal for long road trips, its impressive IIHS Top Safety Pick+ rating gives buyers additional peace of mind.

Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander is a three-row SUV with plenty of power, features, and a spacious interior. For the 2024 model year, the Highlander has a $39,270 starting price and 11 trims, six of which are hybrids. The 2024 Toyota Highlander has a spacious interior with enough space to seat up to eight. This family-friendly interior boasts features like standard reclining second and third-row seats and five USB charge ports.

Toyota also equips all Highlander trims with Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+ (TSS 2.5+), which features automatic high beams, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane tracing assist, lane departure alert, and pre-collision pedestrian detection. Toyota's safety approach enables the Highlander to get an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating and a five-star NHTSA overall safety rating.

In addition, the 2024 Highlander has two powertrains. The base variants use a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 265 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission, powering the front wheels as standard or the optional all-wheel drive. The hybrid versions boast a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, producing 243 combined hp. While both powertrains are fuel efficient, the hybrid versions have the best fuel economy rating of 36 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined.

Volkswagen Atlas

The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas is a family-friendly three-row midsize SUV with a starting price of $37,995. While rivals like the Telluride and Aviator boast a V6 powertrain, the Volkswagen Atlas uses a potent turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. Despite being a four-cylinder, the engine produces 269 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic transmission powering the front or all four wheels depending on the trim.

A perk of using the four-cylinder engine is better fuel economy than its rivals. The base Volkswagen Atlas has an impressive fuel economy rating of 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined. Opting for 4Motion all-wheel drive slightly lowers the economy to 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined. For the 2024 model year, the Atlas has six trims: SE, SE with Technology, Peak Edition SE with Technology, SEL, Peak Edition SEL, and SEL Premium R-Line.

The Atlas lineup boasts a decent selection of tech features, including adaptive cruise control, six USB-C ports, keyless access, wireless charging, autonomous emergency braking, forward collision warning, and an advanced airbag protection system. Volkswagen's advanced safety features and the MQB chassis architecture help the Atlas net a five-star NHTSA overall safety rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating.

The 2024 Volvo XC90 is a midsize luxury SUV rivaling the Lincoln Aviator and Genesis GV80. It is in the ninth year of its second generation, commanding a $56,600 starting price and offering three trims: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. It's Volvo's flagship SUV uses the Scalable Product Architecture, the brand's modular product platform for 60- and 90-Series cars. Like its siblings, the XC90 carries the brand's design language with its key features, including the iconic Thor's Hammer headlights. The interior offers a balanced environment with plenty of high-end materials, and is available in various configurations, including five-, six-, or seven-seat options.

The XC90 lineup has two powertrains, the B5 and B6. These are 2.0 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engines with impressive fuel economy and reasonable performance. Volvo mates these powertrains with a 48-volt electric motor, which helps boost fuel efficiency and offers smooth acceleration. These powertrains pair with an eight-speed automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels. The base B5 powertrain is the least powerful, producing 247 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. However, it boasts the best fuel economy of 22 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.

Volvo offers a plug-in hybrid option, the XC90 Recharge , for better performance and fuel economy. This version boasts the T8 powertrain, which pairs the four-cylinder engine with an electric motor to produce 455 hp. With this powertrain, the XC90 Recharge delivers the best fuel economy rating of 27 mpg combined on gasoline only and 58 MPGe combined. In addition to its impressive fuel economy, the XC90 boasts a five-star NHTSA overall safety rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick rating.

And while interest in hybrids tends to rise along with fuel prices, regular crossovers generally carry significantly lower prices without a major penalty at the pump.

There are only a few good picks among mainstream models that start at less than $40,000 and a handful more when moving up to the luxury realm of SUVs that cost $50,000 or more. The Countryman hybrid offers Mini's iconic style with gas-electric propulsion. It's a great idea that doesn't always deliver in the real world.

The idea seems sound: Take a stylish little SUV, add plug-in hybrid power that in theory could cover city driving on battery power alone, and make it as fun to drive as its gas-only counterparts. And Mini almost got it right. The Countryman Cooper S E delivers quick acceleration — faster than other Countryman models — and Mini's trademark nimble handling without sacrificing ride comfort. But the hybrid's brakes don't inspire confidence (stopping distance is far too long for a car this small), the cargo area is meager even for this pint-size class, and the gas tank shrinks considerably for hybrid duty. That means you'll be stopping for gas a lot when you're leaning on the gas engine, which is inevitable given the Mini's pitiful electric range of 12 miles or so. Ask us how we know . Roomy seating for five, generous cargo space and Toyota's reputation for reliability make the RAV4 a hit even without its 194-horsepower hybrid engine. But factor in 32 mpg combined and quicker acceleration than the gas-only RAV4 (which averages 24-26 mpg), and we think the hybrid is the one to get. Like its standard counterpart, the RAV4 hybrid offers a well-tuned, compliant suspension and a quiet highway ride. There's also a generous package of standard safety aids, including lane departure warning and automatic emergency braking. But also like the non-hybrid, the RAV4 tends to feel a little low-rent and basic inside. Look for improvement in the next-generation RAV4. Read Full Review

The Niro qualifies as more of a hatchback than an SUV, but it's impressively efficient, in any case.

The Niro is the most affordable way into a hybrid SUV, although its low ground clearance and lack of all-wheel drive make it more of a hatchback than anything else. Whatever you choose to call it, the Niro is an intriguing addition to the hybrid class, offering an impressive range of premium touches in a segment that's not known for luxury. Standard features include dual-zone climate control and Apple CarPlay, while heated seats and advanced driving aids are optional on upper trims. The FE base model is the thriftiest of all, returning 50 mpg. But we like the midlevel EX for its additional features, and it still returns 49 mpg. The Niro is also available as a plug-in hybrid, offering up to 26 electric-only miles per charge. Overall, it's the small cargo area, lackluster powertrain refinement and the unavailability of AWD that keep the Niro from scoring higher. Read Full Review

Moving up to the luxury class of hybrid SUVs, you'll find models that typically provide all the luxury goodness of their gas-only counterparts with the benefit of increased fuel efficiency. Some even offer three-row seating. Hybrid models, however, do tend to cost several thousand dollars more than conventional alternatives, which may not prove very cost-effective in the long run. And don't expect a luxury hybrid SUV to tow as much as non-hybrids; the systems typically can't handle the stress of pulling large loads.

2019 Volvo XC60 T8

The XC60 looks stylishly handsome as it moves through the curves.

With a handsome interior, luxury touches and a full complement of advanced safety aids, the XC60 T8 comes generously equipped. But this hybrid stands out as much for its knockout style as for its plug-in fuel-saving capability. A 2.0-liter gasoline engine for the front wheels and an electric motor for the rears deliver a combined 400 hp, which is real giddy-up for both city and highway scenarios. Like many hybrids, though, the T8 suffers from poor brake feel, and it also fails to deliver exceptional fuel economy. In our tests, the T8 returned 24.3 mpg (it's rated at 26 mpg), which is on par with the gas-only, and less expensive, T6 model. That said, the T8 also reliably gave us 20 electric-only miles on a full battery charge, so it's worth considering for drivers who only make short hops between charging sessions. Read Full Review

The NX delivers class-leading fuel economy at 31 mpg, combined with a four-cylinder gas-electric powertrain that won't impress you with speed, but also won't disappoint on the highway or when threading through city traffic. A roomy interior, quiet ride and full suite of advanced safety aids enhance the NX's appeal, while only its below-average cargo capacity and quirky mouselike infotainment interface give us pause. The regular X5 remains a consistent favorite for us since it combines excellent space and utility with sporty handling and performance. The hybrid xDrive40e is a different story. Still lively and stable, the hybrid X5 suffers from common hybrid ailments: mediocre braking performance, bumpy transitions between electric and gas operation, and steering that feels lifeless. This is a BMW, however, so you still get a top-notch interior and advanced infotainment tech. There's also a nifty hatch split into a liftgate and a short tailgate, which is a handy configuration for daily use. But with just 14 miles of electric range and a $4,250 premium over the gas-only xDrive35i (rated at 20 mpg combined), we're not convinced the X5 hybrid is worth the extra cost. Read Full Review

Not only does it offer all the utility you expect from a crossover SUV (55 cubic feet of cargo space and even an optional third row in the RX 450hL), there's also a hearty 308-hp V6 engine that pairs with dual electric motors to return 30 mpg combined. For perspective, consider that the non-hybrid RX 350 all-wheel-drive model returns just 22 mpg. There's a suite of standard advanced safety aids, as you'd expect, along with the quality and craftsmanship that Lexus is known for, especially inside the cabin. Inside, the MDX offers plush leather seats, a quiet ride (enhanced by electric-only operation at low speeds), and a cargo area that remains generous despite all the advanced hardware packaged underneath. Alas, like its rivals, the MDX hybrid suffers from stiff brake feel that can make it hard to judge stopping distances. The MDX also transitions between electric and gas power awkwardly, especially at low speeds, which takes a little shine off the overall experience. You'll appreciate the fuel economy, though — rated at 27 mpg combined, the MDX recorded an excellent 29.6 mpg in our combined-driving test. Read Full Review

Pros and Cons of Hybrid SUVs

Given the preference for crossovers and SUVs today, it makes sense to see similar interest in hybrid versions of these versatile vehicles. Hybrid SUVs do tend to return better fuel economy, especially in city driving, while offering plenty of room for other passengers and cargo.

Plug-in hybrid SUVs go a step further by allowing you to operate solely on electric power for miles at a time. Drivers with short commutes could conceivably travel almost entirely without gas. Depending on where you live, there might also be tax incentives for buying a plug-in hybrid SUV, reducing the cost to you. With fewer tailpipe emissions, you also help keep your community's air cleaner.

On the downside, hybrid battery packs eventually need replacing if you keep your car long enough, and that can be a big expense. Hybrid SUVs are also generally at their least efficient when cruising at high speed. So if you spend a lot of time driving on freeways with high-speed limits, you may not see the same mileage benefits. Hybrid SUVs also tend to come with a price premium over their non-hybrid competitors, which might offset your savings on gas.

Hybrid vs. Plug-in Hybrid

A conventional hybrid is one powered by a gasoline engine that works in tandem with a battery-powered electric motor (or motors) in certain driving conditions. In low-speed city driving, for example, the electric power provides a major assist to the gas engine, resulting in significantly lower urban fuel consumption. Hybrids also get a boost in acceleration thanks to that extra electric juice, although this advantage is frequently offset by the fact that the gas engine is rather weak on its own. Nearly all hybrids can self-charge the electric battery through engine power (similar to a generator) or during braking when the heat generated by braking can be converted to energy stored in the battery pack (hence the term "regenerative braking").

Plug-in hybrids take this a step further by offering a larger battery pack with a connection that allows direct "plug-in" charging. Even a standard household-style outlet can get the job done, though it'll take forever. Most owners will seek out Level 2 or DC fast-charging connections to cut charging times way down. Plug-in hybrids can typically go between 10 and 25 miles on electricity alone before the gasoline engine kicks in. Once its battery is depleted, a plug-in hybrid will operate using a mix of gasoline and electric propulsion, much like a conventional hybrid.

Choosing the Right Hybrid SUV for You

Shopping for the hybrid SUV that best suits your needs can be a daunting task. Good choices are few and come with compromises, including limited cargo capacity, awkward braking and some powertrain quirks. There's also the cost-value equation. Quite simply, many hybrid SUVs don't deliver eye-popping fuel savings compared to gas-only counterparts, yet they can cost considerably more.

But a hybrid SUV can make sense if your driving is limited to short commutes punctuated by stop-and-go traffic, especially if you opt for a plug-in hybrid that offers a cache of electric-only miles. Manage it correctly and you can do much of your driving without dipping into the gasoline supply. While hybrid SUVs pose some challenges, they can certainly be a great fit for many drivers.
