8. Phuket, Thailand

If you’re looking for a vacation destination that feels luxurious but won’t break the bank, start searching for flights to Phuket now. 

This island in southern Thailand, which is just an hour flight from Bangkok, is surrounded by the Andaman Sea, so white sandy beaches abound. If a stunning sunset is what you’re after, head to Promthep Cape, the southernmost point on the island and a popular spot for photo-ops. For views of the island and beyond, climb to the top of the massive alabaster statue called Big Buddha.

You can even learn something during your vacation by visiting the Soi Dog Foundation, an innovative animal shelter that’s fighting the meat trade and taking care of the thousands of stray cats and dogs in the area.

Though Rome’s historic significance cannot be overstated, don’t assume that this Italian city is stuck in the past. On the contrary, you’ll find posh storefronts and luxurious hotels not far from iconic structures like the Pantheon (built in 120 AD) and the Colosseum (built in 80 AD).

And then, of course, there’s the city’s art. Stroll through Rome, and you’ll stumble upon some of the greatest treasures the world has ever seen — an astonishing collection of frescoes, paintings, ceilings and fountains created by icons like Michelangelo, Caravaggio, Raphael and Bernini.

From live performances of Shakespeare to truly world-class (and free!) museums like the National Gallery, London will enrich your mind and enliven your senses. Fun fact: How’s this for a selling point? Maui has more beach than any other Hawaiian island — 60 miles of it, with red, white and black sand.

3. Bora Bora, French Polynesia

Don’t write off the French Polynesian island of Bora Bora just because of its size. Though it’s a little more than 2 miles wide and just 6 miles long, Bora Bora packs in an abundance of natural beauty. To start, you won’t be able to take your eyes off the island’s turquoise lagoon surrounded by lush jungle.

If you’re looking for more than relaxation on your trip, consider hiking or booking a 4X4 tour of Mount Otemanu, part of an extinct volcano that rises 2,400 feet above the lagoon. You can also snorkel among the coral reef of Coral Gardens, where you might catch a glimpse of reef sharks, eels and stingrays.

Because of its remoteness, flying into Bora Bora Airport will be quite a journey, no matter where you're departing from. But you'll forget everything as soon as you see this Polynesian paradise that is beautiful beyond words.

Hot tip: Though Bora Bora can be wildly expensive to visit, you can cut costs by visiting between December and March (though you should avoid the Christmas holiday) and by bringing your own alcohol and sunscreen with you.

Fun fact: Bora Bora is one of the countries that no longer exists . The Kingdom of Bora Bora was an independent state until it was forcefully overtaken and annexed by France in 1888.

There’s an exhilarating freedom that comes with hitting the open road in the US in June, July, and August, no matter how many years it has been since you were in school and actually had an assigned summer break.

And, if you’re like a lot of us, summer vacation in the US often means heading to your family’s classic spot at least once (for us, that’s Atlantic Beach, NC and the surrounding area).

As the largest city in New England and the birthplace of the American Revolution, Boston is undoubtedly one of the absolute best places to visit over the summer in the USA.

With its coastal location, gorgeous architecture, a dizzying array of distinct neighborhoods, and world-class museums (not to mention universities), you’ll never run out of incredible  things to do in Boston .

Glacier National Park, Montana

Unsurprisingly, hiking here is the thing to do if you want the best views and animal sightings. The most recommended hikes in the park include Iceberg Lake, Redrock Falls, and Hidden Lake Trail.

Iceberg Lake, a 9-mile trail, is popular for a reason!

Not only will you be rewarded with the gorgeous azure Iceberg Lake at the end, but your chances of seeing bears along the trail are also pretty high (which is both terrifying and exciting).

Redrock Falls Trail is a nice easy stroll to some small falls you can dip your feet in, and if you want to extend it, continue along the Swiftcurrent Pass trail for more gorgeous vistas.

Hidden Lake Trail is a popular trail just behind the visitor center, offering beautiful views as well.

There are tons of waterfall stops, a stunning drive along Going-to-The-Sun Road, and more to enjoy during your time in Glacier.

The park is spread across nearly a million acres, and considering hiking is the best thing to do and where some of the most worth-it places to visit are, you’re going to need to spend your 5-7 days here to make your summer trip here worth it.

Acadia National Park is the perfect place to visit for a summer vacation in the US.

The park is spread over parts of Mount Desert Island (reached by a short bridge from the mainland), the tiny Isle au Haut, and the nearby Schoodic Peninsula, and as a result, it’s surrounded by water.

The park itself is covered in wooded hills, which are perfect for hiking.

The trails are their best in summer, when temperatures are ideal.

There are several iconic ‘iron rung’ hikes in Acadia – for part of the trails, you need to climb up iron rings embedded into the cliffs for part of them, as well as clamber along narrow ledges.

It can be a little scary, but the reward – spectacular views over the hills and surrounding islands – is well worth it. The most famous of these hikes is The Beehive, which is not to be missed.

Summer is also a great time for swimming in Acadia NP.

The only ocean beach, appropriately named Sand Beach, is chilly even in summer, but nearby Echo Lake has perfect temperatures for swimming.

There are also plenty of water sports, including kayaking and sailing, to enjoy.  Plus, summer is when puffins come to nearby islands to nest, and whales are often seen swimming in the surrounding seas.

June, July, and August are also perfect times for outdoor dining.

Don’t miss having popovers at Jordan Pond House! Tables are set up on the lawn, overlooking the beautiful Jordan Pond, and it’s a perfect way to while away a summer afternoon.

The national park is also laced with miles of historic carriage roads. Take a horse drawn carriage ride (only available in the warmer months) or rent a bike in nearby Bar Harbor and spend several hours cycling through the woods, cooling off in tiny streams along the way.

In Breckenridge, summer provides the opportunity to take the free BreckConnect gondola up to Peak 8, ride the alpine slide down the mountain, mine for gems, hike the many trails from town, discover the Breckenridge Troll, and  many other adventurous activities .

Check out Steamboat Springs for white water rafting, hot springs, and hiking to Fish Creek Falls.

Georgetown is also a great stop with its Georgetown Loop Railroad complete with outlaws, stunning views, and a silver mine tour.

No matter which mountain towns you choose to explore, the options are endless for a summer vacation in the Colorado Rockies!

There are a lot of reasons Door County, Wisconsin, has long been a summer getaway destination for Chicagoans and other Midwesterners.

One of the biggest is its outstanding natural beauty. The peninsula is home to five state parks and nearly thirty county parks.

With three-hundred miles of coastline, it’s a popular spot for boating and fishing.

One of the coolest things to do in Door County is kayak to Cave Point and float into the caves.

It’s also fun to take a guided boat tour and learn the history of the area, and why there were so many shipwrecks. (But don’t worry; it’s safe now.)

If you want a relaxing vacation, there are sandy beaches.

There are no chain stores or restaurants in the quaint harbor towns that line the shores, so you’re sure to find unique shopping and dining.

One of the most well-known restaurants is Al Johnson’s. While the Swedish cuisine is good, the goats on the roof are what really draw attention.

A Door County dining experience you’ll definitely want to experience is an authentic fish boil. It’s dinner and a show rolled into one.

Don’t forget to finish it off with a giant ice cream sundae at Wilson’s.

If you’re looking for an offbeat getaway this summer, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota is a fantastic summer destination in the USA.

This wilderness area is wild and pristine and is perfect for anyone who loves an outdoor adventure and spending quality time in nature.

The Boundary Waters area is absolutely chock full of lakes, so visiting the Boundary Waters is a multi-day canoe trip filled with exploring forests, waterfalls, and, of course, beautiful lakes.

Most people spend several hours each day paddling across the lakes to reach their next campsite and portaging to cross between lakes.

Once you’re done canoeing, go swimming or cliff jumping, go fishing, explore the area (there are hikes and waterfalls you can climb), watch birds and wild animals, or just relax at your campsite.

Permits are required and limited in number, and campsites are very spread out, so you will hardly see another person while in the Boundary Waters.

The water is crystal clear and the views are incredible!

If you love the outdoors, Hocking Hills State Park in Ohio should definitely be on your radar this summer!

Located about an hour southeast of Columbus, Ohio, you’ll be able to unplug, immerse yourself in nature, and enjoy the warm, Midwest summer weather.

When visiting, you won’t want to miss the  hiking trails . Each trail is unique, with varying length and difficulty.

Some are even handicap accessible and pet friendly, so everyone can enjoy this beautiful area.

When you head out on your hike, you’ll soon feel like you were transported to a different world, as you’ll be surrounded by huge rock formations, towering trees, and lush greenery.

While Hocking Hills is known for the hiking trails, there are plenty of other fun things to do in the area to keep you busy.

You can visit the college campus of Ohio University, do a wine tasting at Hocking Hills Winery, check out a couple of the breweries nearby, enjoy some time at the spa, attend a blown glass workshop, or stargaze at the John Glenn Astronomy Park.

Sometimes forgotten about, tucked away in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, Lake Placid is a great destination for a USA summer vacation.

There are nearly endless outdoor activities and things to do in Lake Placid in summer , best experienced when the snow has finally melted from the high peaks.

You can climb to the top of Mount Marcy, the tallest point in the state of New York, or the 45 other 4,000+ footers in the Adirondack Mountains.

If this sounds too adventurous, you can still experience the views from a high peak by driving to the top of Whiteface Mountain.

Views from the access road are stunning, and there are plenty of pull-offs to stop and enjoy.

Once you reach the end of the road, you can enjoy the views from there or continue on a few hundred yards over uneven, rocky stairs to reach the actual summit.

Spend your days out chasing waterfalls, and evenings enjoying a delicious dinner by the lake on one of the outdoor restaurant patios. Rent a kayak or paddleboard and float the day away on the lake. 

Don’t forget to explore some of the historic Olympic sites from the 1980 games. Travel to the top of the ski jump ramp and see the views that jumpers have just before flying downhill, or try out the bobsled track experience.

Many vineyards are within walking distance of Napa Valley’s main towns, including Rutherford, Napa, Yountville, and Oakville. You can also enjoy activities like hot air ballooning , more reliable flights in better weather, and romantic excursions like horseback riding.

However, if you’re selective in your sightseeing , there’s no reason you can’t enjoy Las Vegas as one of the best summer vacations in the USA. The lack of crowds is already a great start. Since much of Vegas is seen at night when temperatures are cooler, the city is actually well-suited to a summer vacation. You can enjoy attractions like the Neon Museum and the Mob Museum. And you can still take day trips to Death Valley National Park or Emerald Cave – just do so as early as possible in the morning to beat those crazy midday temperatures.

Las Vegas doesn’t follow a rule book, so why should you? Grand Teton is a fertile region of glaciated mountains with dramatic crags and sharp ridges from centuries-old ice shaping. Its pastures now feed thousands of moose, elk, and bison. In summer, tourists can drive the park’s scenic 42-mile loop and spot wildlife out their window. You can also easily enjoy water activities like kayaking on Jenny Lake and warm weather hikes.

It’s incredible what waiting those extra couple of months can do regarding trail accessibility in Zion. And that’s what makes it one of the best summer vacation spots.

Looking for a European summer destination that delivers stacks of natural beauty? The Azores offer just that.

East of the Spanish mainland, the four main Balearic Islands – Ibiza , Formentera , Mallorca and Menorca – are distinct from the rest of Spain , and from each other.

For example, Ibiza Town is loaded with historic attractions, and also remains hugely popular with clubbers and LGBTQ+ visitors. Meanwhile, the north of the island retains an old school bohemian atmosphere.

Kicking off in Slovenia's  elegant capital,  Ljubljana , is a convenient base from which to visit a host of the country’s attractions. This city has its own hilltop 15th-century castle to explore before you venture further afield.

On that subject, Lake Bled  is an absolute must-visit. A mere 50 minutes from the capital, this mirror-like expanse of water boasts a fairy tale island and cliff-top castle, with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains.

Around 53 kilometres from Ljubljana, visiting Postojna Caves is another unmissable day trip. On arrival, you’ll board a train that’ll transport you to a sublime subterranean world, culminating in a show-stopping, cathedral-like chamber. 

A few kilometres northwest of Postojna caves, sixteenth-century Predjama Castle is a precariously-sited feat of architectural wonder. It’s built into and around an elevated cave entrance in the centre of a dramatic karst landscape.

Beyond its undeniably beautiful interior, Slovenia’s coastline might be short, but it’s incredibly sweet and varied.

When July turns into August and you’re fretting that summer is flying by too quickly, it’s time to plan some travel. Even a long weekend trip or staycation will be satisfying and fun, especially for the young ones who may be ready for a change of pace. A beach or pool in California, Hawaii, Mexico, or Florida might fit the bill, and for those longing for distant places, we have several suggestions, including Kenya, Scotland, and Montenegro. 

Fresh mountain air in Jackson Hole and delightful breezes in New England, Nova Scotia, and Chicago (there are beaches on Lake Michigan and cruises on the Chicago River) will be refreshing in August. These are the best places to travel in August in the U.S. and around the world.

Malibu, California

From a 30-mile stretch of surf to the hills and canyons of the Santa Monica Mountains, Malibu is a destination to put on your summer itinerary. If you read Travel + Leisure’s Family Travel Digital Issue , you may have already done just that. Malibu’s beaches are world famous, and beyond that, the city with the glamorous reputation offers hiking, culture, wineries, and history. Imagine yourself at an ancient Roman country home with a visit to the art-filled Getty Villa . Combine a guided hike or 4x4 tour with wine tasting for a fun way to get to know Malibu. In Malibu Creek State Park , there’s fishing, mountain biking, rock climbing, and horseback riding along with spectacular views in this area that is the ancestral home of the Chumash Native American people. Get to the beach with an oceanfront stay at the Surfrider Hotel Malibu , Nobu Ryokan Malibu , or Malibu Beach Inn . North Carolina’s High Country

Located in the state’s northwest corner in the Blue Ridge Mountains , North Carolina’ s High Country offers family fun and ideal August weather in the high 70s. The Blue Ridge Parkway , called “America’s Favorite Drive” for its scenery, wildlife, and varied activities, is just one of many attractions. In Boone , the Boone Greenway offers an accessible trail for hikers, cyclists, strollers, wheelchairs, and leashed dogs — perfect for a picnic among gorgeous scenery. In town, stay at the historic boutique Horton Hotel . Nearby in Blowing Rock, Tweetsie Railroad features attractions for all ages, including rides, entertainment, food, and a zoo. At Grandfather Mountain , you can walk across the Mile High Swinging Bridge , and at Moses H. Cone Memorial Park , you can ride in a horse-drawn carriage and tour a historic mansion. Nearby in Blowing Rock, Mystery Hill is a fascinating attraction, and Chetola Resort offers a variety of lodging. Taste award-winning wines and spend the night at Banner Elk Winery and Villa , High Country’s original winery.

August falls in the area’s dry season (from July to September), so a trip then is well-timed for the thrilling annual Great Migration when more than two million wildebeest, zebras, giraffes, and many of their predators cross the Serengeti into Kenya’s Maasai Mara. Located in southwest Kenya, Maasai Mara National Reserve is also home to lions, elephants, African buffalos, Thomson’s gazelles, and cheetahs. The nomadic Maasai tribe also lives in the area, herding their cattle and often welcoming visitors as tour leaders or selling their handmade items. A luxury stay at Sir Richard Branson’s Mahali Mzuri safari camp or ol Donyo Lodge, Relais & Châteaux would be a memorable addition to a visit. JW Marriott Masai Mara Lodge and Fairmont Mt. Chicago, Illinois

The “Windy City” is warm in summer, with perhaps a shower or two — making this the perfect time to enjoy indoor entertainment with a visit to the Art Institute , Children’s Museum , or Museum of Science + Industry . The popular Architecture River Cruise offers a 90-minute guided tour, and an evening version highlights the city skyline. On the Navy Pier , visitors can watch fireworks on Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The annual Chicago Air & Water Show will be held on Aug. 19-20, and on Aug. 3-6, Lollapalooza takes place in Grant Park. Baseball fans can watch the “Crosstown Classic” on Aug. 15-16 when the White Sox and Cubs meet in Wrigley Field. Chicago’s beaches , parks, Riverwalk , and “The 606” green space are ways to enjoy the outdoors, along with concerts and summer films in Millennium Park . August is the sunniest and arguably the most exciting month in Edinburgh , with festivals galore, and it’s a great time to visit the United Kingdom, Travel + Leisure’s Destination of the Year . The temperature is in the comfortable mid-60s, and excitement is all around the historic city. The month begins with music, dance, theater, and opera at the International Festival and thousands of free performances throughout the city with the Fringe Festival , both set for Aug. 4-27. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo runs from Aug. 4-26, and the Art Festival runs from Aug. 11-27. Be sure to take time to explore the city’s history as you enjoy the atmosphere. Nova Scotia’s short summer from mid-June to mid-September brings temperatures in the pleasant 70s, with a few days a bit warmer. The peninsula, one of Canada’s maritime provinces, is located east of Maine. Festivals mark the summer season, with events throughout the area. Visitors and locals take advantage of the warm weather with whale watching , surfing , kayaking , canoeing, boating, fishing , and water sports. On land, hiking, fossil hunting, stargazing , and golf are favorite activities. Sample local wines , and visit distilleries, breweries, cideries, and seafood restaurants. Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year. 

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.” 

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

Here’s what to consider when booking a summer trip, including where to go, when to travel and how to save:

What is the best place to travel in summer? 

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said. 

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Where do most tourists go in summer?

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

◾ Paris, host of the Summer Olympics

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds. 

• ◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations. ◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible. 

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes. 

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

This summer marks a 30% increase in Airbnb searches for outdoor activities—it’s prime time for families to enjoy some space outside in gorgeous weather with breathtaking views. Private outside space and beachside stays are trending for those traveling with family, according to the survey. Nearly 60% of Airbnb users want ample space for everyone, and 71% prioritize amenities like kitchens, workspaces, and backyards.

And get ready for a summer where your Airbnb becomes more than just a place to stay. Vacation isn’t just about relaxation but also play and adventure. Another top trend this summer is play-based, experiential stays. Think: arcades, game courts, slides, and more—going beyond the basic amenities for a thrilling vacation. Airbnb reported that searches within the “Play” category more than doubled for summer travel. There will never be a dull moment with accommodations this entertaining. 

For example, Airbnb highlighted a Luxury Entertainment Oasis in Tracy, California—a dedicated guest favorite and one of the most wishlisted Listings in the “Play” category. BREVARD COUNTY • COCOA BEACH, FLORIDA — USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards have recognized Florida’s Space Coast  as a top vacation destination with nominations in three categories this year: Best Summer Travel Destination (Space Coast), Best Beach in Florida (Cocoa Beach), and Best Aerial Adventure Park (Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures).

The award nominations further solidify the Space Coast’s reputation as a premier place to travel and live in the U.S.

The award nomination for the Space Coast as Best Summer Travel Destination mentions the area’s “hub of activities, including water sports, cruise excursions, fishing, and golfing,” adding that it’s also “a great spot for lazy beach days.” The nomination also highlights the Kennedy Space Center and the Cape Canaveral Space Force Stations as popular places to visit.

The Space Coast is the only Florida location nominated in the Best Summer Travel Destination category, where other nominees include Door County, Wis., and Ocean City, N.J. Voting is open until May 13.

“We’re honored to be recognized by a national platform like USA TODAY’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards as one of the best summer travel destinations in the country,” said Peter Cranis, Director of the Space Coast Tourism Development Office.

Voting is also open for the Best Beach in Florida, where readers can cast their vote for the “soft white sand and surging waves that are perfect for surfing,” on Cocoa Beach. Cocoa Beach Aerial Adventures, which is nominated for the Best Aerial Adventure Park category, offers 49 thrilling and unique obstacles, including suspension bridges, zip lines, catwalks, and nets.

Other attractions include visiting the Shark Reef Aquarium or heading out of the city to hike the many natural attractions such as Antelope Canyon.  

5. Honolulu, Hawaii  

Proving that Hawaii is a perennial summertime favorite, Honolulu is the second Hawaiian destination to make the list.  

Honolulu is the Hawaiian capital and the biggest city in the State. It boasts pristine beaches and a plethora of water sports for enjoying outdoor adventures, and most visitors rarely leave the seashore.  

If you want to step off the beach then you'll find a host of breathtaking hikes and lookouts adding to the already incredible natural beauty of this stunning destination.  

4. New York, New York  

New York, New York, so good they named it twice! While many native New Yorkers leave the city in the summer months, tourists begin to arrive in their droves. 

New York is home to museums, galleries, and a whole host of iconic attractions to explore. Everyone should see the American Museum of Natural History or the Statue of Liberty at least once.   

Summer in New York is a great time to get outside and enjoy picnics in the park, eat gelato on the steamy streets, or take in a show in an air-conditioned theater when things get too hot.  

3. Boston, Massachusetts  

Summer is the busiest time of the year to visit Boston which explains why it is considered the 3 rd most popular destination in the U.S.  

Visit the Seaport Summer Market, check out an outdoor movie and head to the beach if you're looking for outdoor adventures. Wollaston Beach is the largest beach in Boston and boasts a huge stretch of golden sand.  

There are plenty of parks and public gardens in the city too, perfect for enjoying a picnic in the sunshine.  

2. Seattle, Washington  

The 2 nd most popular destination for American travelers this summer is Seattle. Seattle is a super cool destination, but the weather is comfortably warm during the summer months.  

Some of the highlights of a trip to Seattle include taking a ferry ride across the Bay, enjoying a food tour of Pike Place Market, or hiking through the beautiful green spaces in Discovery Park.  

And while Seattle isn't known for its beaches, you can enjoy a beach day on the sandy Alki Beach in West Seattle where you can also swim in the water.  

1. Orlando, Florida  

Orlando is America's favorite destination to visit this summer, which should come as no surprise as it took the number 1 spot last summer too.  

And it's easy to see why Orlando is so popular. Whether you want to meet Mickey Mouse in Walt Disney World, a thrill seeker ready to explore Universal Studios, or an adrenaline junkie ready to hit the water parks there's something for everyone.  

And away from these best-known attractions Orlando also offers incredible outdoor adventures, such as kayaking through the Everglades, world-class shopping experiences, or simply soaking up the sunshine.

6 of the best European train routes for summer 2024

Are you planning some European travel this summer? Me too. Getting from A to B by train has never felt so exciting, with a thrilling mix of new routes, classic journeys, and under-the-radar options to choose from.

Here are some of the most enticing European train journeys available for summer 2024. Some services kick in when summer timetables begin in June, while many are in operation now. Either way, it’s time to start planning!

1. There's a new service linking the Baltic capitals

Lithuania has been quietly building up international rail connections in recent years. A cross-border service to Warsaw and Kraków in Poland began in late 2022, and since December last 2023, it has been possible to travel between two of the Baltic capitals by direct train. The journey north from Vilnius to the capital of Latvia , Riga , takes 4 hours and 15 minutes and runs daily, making it a competitive alternative to the bus. Booking in advance is recommended, though. This new route through the Baltics is a precursor to a hoped-for extension towards Tallinn which would link the three capitals. Back in Vilnius, connecting with an onward train to Kaunas is possible.

2. Travel at high speed from Barcelona to Seville

Iryo, a recent entrant into Spain’s seemingly ever-expanding range of high-speed services, has established a foothold on the high-traffic Madrid to Zaragoza and Barcelona route. Its new offering extends from Barcelona and Madrid to the Andalucían cities of Córdoba and Seville , making the journey between the Catalan capital and Seville in 5 hours and 50 minutes. Using the same rolling stock as Trenitalia’s slick Frecciarossa trains, Iryo is also notable for an onboard food service that includes cheese and ham tapas and sustainably sourced Spanish wines to help the high-speed scenery flash past.

3. Take the night train from Brussels to Prague

Europe’s night train revolution continues to reshape the experience of traveling across the continent. Only last year, there was no option to reach Prague from the west by sleeper. Now, there are options to lull you to sleep from Paris or Brussels to Berlin , then onto Prague by lunchtime. One approach is the thrice weekly Austrian Nightjet service from Paris and Brussels to Berlin, where you change trains for Prague. More conveniently, there is the privately run European Sleeper train on alternate nights, which takes you all the way. Don’t expect too many frills, though: this train consists of older carriages leased from various train companies around Europe. You will, however, travel directly to Prague with a friendly train crew and enjoy a time-efficient, continent-spanning journey. 

How to book: One-way tickets from Brussels to Prague on the European Sleeper start at €79 for seats, €109 for couchette space, €179 sleeper berth.

4. Scoot along İstanbul's Sirkeci seafront line

If ever a station was a shadow of its former self, it’s Sirkeci, sitting on the shores of the Bosphorus in İstanbul ’s Sultanahmet district . Best known as the one-time terminus for the fabled Orient Express trains, Sirkeci lost its long-distance services in 2013. While the city bustles around Sirkeci, the ground-level platforms have sat unused since, while the underground Marmaray railway flashes underneath the old city bearing travelers from Europe to Asia. There’s life in old Sirkeci yet though. The opening of the new 5.2-mile light rail service to Kazlıçeşme restores trains to the original trainshed. In time, these renewed tracks may even see a return of Sofia - and Bucharest -bound services to the banks of the Bosphorus rather than their less convenient departure point at Halkalı, the western end of the Marmaray line. For now, this is an excuse for nostalgically-minded travelers to hop on a train from one of Europe’s most storied stations, perhaps for a seafood meal in lively Kumkapi, one of the stops on the new line.

5. Ride the summer-only route from Budapest to Koper on Slovenia's Adriatic

Some journeys are so perfectly made for hot weather that they only exist during Europe’s hottest months. Pulling out of Budapest ’s Deli station – not to be confused with the more famous Keleti – the Citadella train noses its way every morning to the Slovenian border and onto the compact capital, Ljubljana . While the views on the Hungarian journey are less remarkable, the stretch of track running alongside the Sava River between Celje and Ljubljana introduces Slovenia’s natural beauty. Between June 16 and August 24, taking this train past the capital to Koper on the Slovene riviera is possible. Koper is home to a historic center stuffed with Venetian architecture and, combined with an unusual journey to get here, more than justifies being added to any central European plans this summer.

6. Spend a month traveling Germany by train for just €49

One of the continent’s great travel deals can open up a host of slow journeys in Germany. For €49, travelers can purchase a Deutschlandticket for a month. The price includes regional and suburban (but not ICE or IC long-distance) services across Germany, plus buses, trams and subways. As well as covering urban exploration, this ticket is perfect for hopping around the Rhine and Moselle valleys , taking a tour of the Black Forest or exploring many of the Harz Mountain lines. It also opens up possibilities for some regional international services across borders. Even if you end up paying for the occasional inter-city service, you’ll still save money.
