How we rated the best and worst Dodge Journey years

During our evaluation of the Dodge Journey as a model, we’ve gone through the reports on various model years based on several sources. First, we relied on trustworthy organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and we went through their records including details on recalls and common driver complaints.

After that, we’ve done some more digging on Dodge Journey recalls through reliable platforms like Cars.com, as well as sources of authority like Edmunds and Kelly Blue Book. As mentioned, we wanted to give you honest Dodge Journey reviews and we could only do that by citing some forums with real experiences of previous drivers and Journey owners.

Most common Dodge Journey problems

The Dodge Journey might be a safe and reliable vehicle. However, it is not exempt from faults and flaws. Among the Dodge Journey most common problems you could run upon are brake problems, defective remote keyless entry systems, interior water leaks, or even damaged head gaskets, so we’ll discuss each of those in more detail.

1. Overheating engine

Engine issues are a common issue in faulty Dodge Journey model years. For the Dodge Journey, these problems happened in the 2009-2016 model years, causing overheating once they hit the 78,000-mile mark. This problem is likely caused by coolant flow challenges due to debris locking the cylinder head coolant port at its primary thermostat housing.

At first, the vehicle’s temperature light may turn on, but this worsens over time. Some Journey owners complained that their vehicles experienced engine power loss , leading to overheating. The vehicle may also develop coolant leaks, which become excessive for its overflow reservoir, causing coolant fluid to spill over.

These engine problems are usually expensive and dangerous, depending on where they happen. For a driver, you don’t want to encounter engine issues every day.

2. Brake problems

Brake issues were the most common troubles that plagued the Dodge Journey, especially its 2009-2010 model years. The brakes on these models wear out prematurely , which happens to relatively new Journey vehicles at about 30,000 miles. Some drivers mentioned that this issue has become severe, requiring them to replace their brakes every three months.

The abovementioned issues are among the few brake-related problems you could face if you purchase a problematic Dodge Journey model year. These issues are inconvenient and dangerous, especially for driving at high speeds. You want to avoid a vehicle that struggles with maintaining proper brakes.

3. Defective remote keyless entry system

The Dodge Journey has many cool features, and the remote keyless system is supposed to be one of them. Instead, the keyless system is another Dodge Journey feature that has become problematic for drivers.

Many frustrated owners complain that the system doesn’t work correctly as it gives off either wrong key readings or the annoying “key not detected” message. The system sometimes interferes with the key fob, preventing drivers from locking or unlocking the doors. To fix this issue, owners may need to do a software update.

4. Interior water leaks

Some owners of the 2009-2018 Dodge Journey models have expressed discomfort caused by dampness inside the cabin. The cabin appears vulnerable to water leaks , typically at a low mileage of about 50,000 to 60,000 miles. According to complaints from owners, the driver’s seat floor of the Dodge Journey may become wet when they travel in the rain.

Other drivers complained that they noticed leaks near the side of the Journey, causing wet floors and carpets. Additionally, some drivers reported leaks near windows, headliners, and vents, and you may need a professional to fix the leaks and resolve the issue.

5. Damaged head gasket

This is another notorious Dodge Journey issue among vehicle owners. Drivers note that this problem commonly happens at about 100,000 miles. It might begin with performance issues and graduate to engine failure over time. This may be due to cracked or damaged head gaskets.

Some drivers have reported having leaky or blown head gaskets , causing severe damage to the engine. Experts recommend a compression test to verify if your Journey has faulty head gaskets. If they are defective, you may replace them yourself if you are a DIYer or have a professional do the job.

Worst Dodge Journey years to avoid

The Dodge Journey has had several great models; however, there are also some model years you should avoid if you intend to purchase a Dodge Journey. Below is a list of Journey model years to avoid:

Naturally, our team will get you through all these model years and their issues so you can have an easier time picking the most reliable Journey model.

First-generation Journey (2009-2012 model years)

The 2009 Dodge Journey was the first model of this generation, and it was associated with numerous problems and complaints from drivers. Its prevalent issue was with the brakes, and many drivers complained of frequent brake replacements within a short timeframe. These drivers point out that the vehicle is too heavy for the brake pads and rotors.

Other drivers reported that regardless of how gentle you are with the vehicle, it doesn’t stop the brakes from wearing out at 30,000 miles or earlier. Additionally, the braking power isn’t sufficient for the size of the vehicle and can lead to disastrous accidents in the worst cases.

Another issue of the 2009 model year was with its transmission, which caused rough gear shifting . Some drivers complained that shifting the vehicle out of the first gear was difficult, especially during cold weather. Also, several drivers report that their transmission fails at around 60,000 miles, causing them to abandon the vehicle.

The 2009 and 2010 models were also plagued by electrical faults that prevented the engine from turning over, which may be caused by the neutral safety switch losing communication with the shifter. Most drivers had to put their vehicles in neutral to get the engine to start up. Some drivers also complained that they experience these issues on other components like the horn, windows, radios, etc.

2011 Dodge model year also had issues with the brakes, but unlike the 2009-2010 models, which had brakes that required premature replacements , the 2011 model had brakes that made grinding and squealing sounds. In addition to the noises, drivers complain that their 2011 Journey shakes the steering wheel while braking.

Best & Worst Years for Dodge Journey 1st Generation (2009-2020)

Dodge Journey 1st generation 2009 model

Introduced in 2009, the Dodge Journey’s 1st generation marked the brand’s ambitious entry into the midsize crossover SUV market. Designed to cater to families desiring space without opting for a full-fledged minivan, the Journey came with a pledge of comfort, technology, and performance.

However, as with many pioneering endeavors, it faced its fair share of challenges. From significant breakthroughs in interior design and infotainment enhancements to persistent issues with electrical systems and engine performance, this generation was a blend of commendations and critiques.

The Best Years: 2011, 2013, 2016, 2019, 2020

The 2011 Dodge Journey marked a significant improvement from its predecessors. Key enhancements included a revamped interior, the introduction of the acclaimed Uconnect infotainment system, and the inclusion of more safety features such as advanced airbags and stability control systems. There was also a notable drop in reported issues compared to the previous years.

By 2013, Dodge further refined the Journey, offering features such as push-button start, a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, and improved fuel efficiency. It was also praised for its value, balancing affordability with feature-rich offerings.

The 2016 model stood out for technological enhancements, notably in its infotainment capabilities. The integration of both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay made connectivity seamless for drivers. Performance improvements and an expanded range of trim options made it a popular choice among consumers.

As for the 2019 and 2020 models, Dodge ensured a fitting culmination for the 1st generation. They boasted advancements in driver-assistance features, a smoother V6 engine option, and retained the roomy interior that users had come to appreciate. These years also saw minimal complaints, indicating consistent quality and performance.

The Neutral Years: 2017, 2018

The 2017 and 2018 Dodge Journey years, while not as celebrated as the “best” years, held their ground with reliability.

They continued the tradition of offering a spacious three-row seating option, the versatile Uconnect infotainment system, and an available V6 engine that provided a mix of power and efficiency.

Minor adjustments in design and the addition of a few more driver-assist features kept these models relevant, although they didn’t introduce any revolutionary changes.

The Worst Years: 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2015

Launching the 1st generation in 2009, Dodge encountered several hiccups. Predominant issues surrounded the electrical system, airbags, powertrain, and engine.

The 2009 model was particularly plagued by a significant ignition switch recall, posing a potential risk in deactivating key safety systems including but limited to air bags, power steering and power braking.

The 2010 Dodge Journey had its struggles too. With over 1000 complaints registered with the NHTSA, the electrical system again became a focal point of criticism.

A severe recall for 23237 different vehicles including 2009-2010 Dodge Journey models was announced, linked to a power steering fluid leak, threatening both power steering failure and potential fires.

By 2012, while Dodge attempted to resolve previous concerns, new ones like brake problems arose. The engine and electrical system remained consistent pain points, resulting in various recalls and consumer grievances.

In 2014 and 2015, there were still some troubles. A significant problem was the recall of about 275000 Dodge Journey cars from 2012-2015 due to the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS). Water entering the system could deactivate the ABS and/or the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which could jeopardize the vehicle’s safety.

THE MOST RELIABLE YEAR FOR THE DODGE JOURNEY

Although there’s a ton of information, we’ve narrowed down the critical portions for your car-hunting needs. Read on to learn more about the most reliable year Dodge Journey , the least reliable selection, and anything else you should know.

Brake Problems

Brake problems were the most prominent issue that emerged with the Dodge Journey, especially the 2009 model. This is an inconvenience and wildly dangerous for those who drive at high speeds. You don’t want a vehicle that struggles to maintain proper brakes.

Some brake problems include:

  • Premature brake and rotor wear
  • Noisy brakes
  • Calipers that lock up

These are just a few brake problems that can emerge if you select one of the problematic Dodge Journey years.

Brakes are a critical aspect of any vehicle. If you select one of the above models and don’t maintain your brakes, you could face danger and wild expenses in the future. This issue stands out as the worst of the Dodge Journey’s faulty years.

Engine Issues

Engine issues are the second problem in the faulty Dodge Journey years. Engine problems can be expensive and even dangerous depending on where they occur. If you’re a driver, engine problems are not something you want to deal with daily.

Some of the engine problems include:

  • Dying engine while driving
  • Ticking sound from the engine
  • Check engine light always on

It’s safe to say that none of these engine issues appeal to drivers, no matter how small they seem.

You’re paying lots of money for a used Dodge Journey, so why pick one with severe engine faults ingrained in its system? Go with a more reliable model to ensure that you stay safe on the road and save money.

Interior Accessory Troubles

Finally, interior accessory troubles are one of the final issues that plague some models of the Dodge Journey. These problems can deal with anything from the vehicle’s door to the car’s window and everything in between.

These issues are both a nuisance to the typical car owner and an unnecessary expense. The more things break, the more it will cost to fix them. It’s vital to invest in a version of the Dodge Journey that has a stable interior so you can avoid the pain of fixing interior accessory breakages regularly.

Interior Water Leaks

Owners of the 2009-2018 Dodge Journeys have compromised their comfort of dampness inside the cabin. Apparently, the cabin is susceptible to water leaks which may occur at the low mileage of 58,000 miles.

According to the reports, the driver seat floor of the Dodge Journey may become moist whenever you’re driving in the rain. In some complaints, there are also leaks found near the rear side of the Journey, which may get your floor and carpet wet. Leaks were also reported near vents, windows, and headliners. You may need a professional to seal the leaky areas and solve this issue.

Defective Remote Keyless Entry System

There’s no shortage of neat features offered by the 2009-2017 Dodge Journeys – unfortunately, the remote keyless entry function isn’t one of them. The remote keyless entry system is one of the most reported issues with the Dodge Journey.

According to frustrated owners, the system refuses to work properly as you’ll either get wrong key readings or the dreaded “key not detected” message. In some cases, the system also interfered with the key fob that prevented drivers from locking or unlocking the doors. A software update is required to fix the issue.

The 2012 model year maintained the trend of previous years by having engine, brake, and reliability issues. Although Dodge fixed a few problems with the 2012 model year, it’s still not a good idea to buy a 2012 Dodge Journey.

The failure of electrical components and interior accessories, such as instrument clusters, was still an issue for some drivers. The other most prevalent complaints involved premature head failure and frozen engines.

  • NHTSA:   6 recalls and 344 complaints .

1. Best Year: 2020 Dodge Journey (4.05 Rating)

best year journey

The 2020 Dodge Journey was the last and by far the best model of Journey available today in the used market. It is the most reasonably priced three-row SUV. The design is getting old, and the features are becoming less useful, but the price is thousands less than the competition.

The 2020 Journey may not impress with its driving dynamics, powertrain, or availability of driver-assistance systems. Still, its adaptable cabin and straightforward infotainment system will surely win over budget-conscious shoppers.

  • NHTSA:   0 recalls and 7 complaints .
  • Edmunds:   4.0/5.0  consumer and 5.6/10 expert ratings.

Common Dodge Journey Problems

The main reasons why some years are best avoided are mentioned below:

1. Weak Brakes

The Dodge Journey, especially the 2009 model year, was plagued by brake issues. These are just some of the brake issues that may arise if you choose a Dodge Journey from a troublesome year:

  • Damage to the rotors and brakes
  • Brake noise
  • Confining calipers

2. Engine Failure

Dodge Journey years with engine problems are the second most common issue. Depending on the circumstances, fixing an engine malfunction can be very costly.

The following are examples of engine issues:

  • Driving with a dying engine
  • The engine was making a ticking noise.
  • The engine light stays on at all times.

3. Problems with Internal Components

Some Dodge Journey cars may have problems with their interior accessories. Issues might arise with any part of the vehicle, from the door to the windows.

4. Broken Keyless Entry Remote System:

Unfortunately, the remote keyless entry functionality is very bad on Dodge Journeys manufactured between 2009 and 2017. The Dodge Journey’s keyless entry mechanism is a common complaint.

5. Water leakage

Dampness in the cabin is an issue for drivers of the 2009-2018 Dodge Journey. Even with the relatively low distance of 58,000 km, water leaks into the cabin are possible.

1. Is Dodge Journey A Good Car?

Used Dodge Journeys is not a good car option. The interior is covered in low-quality plastics, the third row is quite tight, and the cargo area is poor for a vehicle in this class. The Dodge Journey ranks last among midsize SUVs.

2. How Long Will Dodge Journey Last?

A well-maintained Dodge Journey may go between 150,000 and 200,000 kilometers with proper care. Some drivers have traveled over two hundred thousand miles in their Journeys. If you average 15,000 annual miles on your Dodge Journey, you may get 10–15 years out of it.

3. Is Dodge Journey Expensive To Maintain?

Dodge’s reliability is approximately average. Dodges have a significantly higher maintenance cost than other popular car brands.

Knowing which model years of the Dodge Journey to avoid will help you save time and energy. Some models, like 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2018 are the Dodge Journey to avoid because they have a lot of issues, including engine or transmission failure.

Although generally reliable, the Dodge Journey has had some issues, but a few years stand tall regarding reliability. We hope this Dodge Journey review helped assist you in choosing your vehicle.

Dodge has been known to make American-style, rugged cars. The Journey is an example of the company's soft side. But which is the best year Dodge Journey?

The Journey is Dodge's first step into the crossover market. At its launch in 2009, the car had a tough time competing with rivals like Hyundai Santa-Fe, Ford Edge, and Honda CR-V. However, two years down the line, Dodge made significant changes to the vehicle in an attempt to make it get on.

Since its launch, the Journey has faced several issues. Dodge resolved most of them during the years that followed. 2013 was the best year for Dodge Journey as it recorded the fewest number of complaints. It also comes with sufficient features, making it a good low-budget crossover vehicle.

One of the reasons that the Journey went through a hard time initially was because its parent company, Chrysler, was going through turbulent times in 2009. It was obvious that the company paid little attention to the interior and design cues of the vehicle, as it had more crucial things to deal with. This led to a lower quality interior, which was equipped with fewer features than rivals.

Car experts believe that the Dodge Journey has had a tough time competing with its popular rivals throughout its production years. However, it comes at a budget-friendly price and is suited for families running on tight budgets. The vehicle is good for city driving and is comfortable and smooth on highways. But it has little to offer for car enthusiasts.

‍ 2013 Dodge Journey

The 2013 Journey is a crossover with design cues borrowed partially from minivans and partially station wagons. It sits in the middle of the mid-sized crossover market but has some perception issues since it also comes in a seven-seater variant.

For many years Dodge Journey struggled to make a mark. But the 2013 model featuring a refined interior, an improved engine, and even a third-row seat, the 2013 Dodge Journey became one of the better choices among the Journey lineup.

The design of the 2013 Journey lies somewhere between tall wagons and truck-like SUVs. It flaunts a look that makes it stand out among other crossover rivals. This does not make it very sleek, but it does help the crossover forego the family-vehicle label.

Upfront, the most noticeable thing, like on almost all other Dodges, is the massive crosshair grille. The vehicle features a boxy front, which gives it quite an athletic stance. Towards the side, the wheel wells are lipped, giving the vehicle a more streamlined look. The curved sheet metal is another feature that gives the vehicle a sporty look.

Step inside, and the design cues follow through. As soon as you open the door, you are greeted by a metallic trim that takes you to a more subtle dashboard with smooth finishing and high-quality materials. The cabin is simple and follows a smoothly swooping look. The knobs and dials are easy to use and fairly large. You cannot help but notice the audio system and touchscreen on some trims, bordered by quality material.

Performance

If you are looking for performance and fuel economy, it is best to steer clear of the 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine, which produces 173 hp. The engine is coupled to a four-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain feels quite underpowered and can run at high rpm for longer periods, resulting in poorer fuel economy.

However, the bigger engine is more suited to Dodge Journey. It is Chrysler's Pentastar 3.6-liter V6, which produces 283 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque. It is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission and is much more responsive than the four-speed automatic.

The Journey handles quite well and is responsive to steering input. Its suspension makes the crossover feel like a much leaner and lower vehicle; you will not feel too much body roll when running over bumps or during high-speed twisty road runs.

The Journey's ride quality is one of its strong points. The vehicle offers a smooth and comfortable ride with adequate damping and shock absorption, making it an excellent vehicle for long family trips. The steering response of the Journey is quick, a bit too quick for a family vehicle. The small ratios of the hydraulic power steering make the handling of the vehicle agile and responsive.

The vehicle comes with wheel sizes between 17 and 19 inches. Although the ride remains soft and comfortable with the smaller rims, the bigger rims add to the vehicle's traction and handling capability. The added handling comes at a slight price of comfort.

Comfort and Space

Dodge has vast experience with minivans, which is reflected in the interior of the Journey. It is quite spacious and fits cargo and people with ease. There are plenty of storage areas for small items, accessories, and toys. The vehicle offers decent seating space for an entire family without adding extra size to the exterior.

The front seats are wide and well-spaced out, American style, if we may call them. We did not expect the backseat to be as spacious on a vehicle this size. However, it is big enough and well-shaped to support two large adults or three kids. The back seat can be reclined and slides a few inches to and fro to ensure comfort.

Behind the front seats, there is 67 cubic feet of space. For the five-seat variant, there is 39 cubic feet of space behind the rear seat. On the seven-seat variant, the space behind the second seat is 37 ft3, and behind the third seat, it is around 11 ft3.

Although the cargo space is adequate, the Journey impresses with several storage compartments located around the cabin. The glove box is quite large, and there is a compartment big enough for a few laptop bags under the cargo floor towards the rear end of the cabin. Even the passenger seat hides a storage bin. You can flip the seat cushion forward to reveal a rather large bin, which can be used to store items you would want out of sight.

The 2013 Dodge Journey is equipped with many standard safety features. These include:

  • For driver and passenger, frontal airbags keep the front occupants' heads safe and secure during a frontal crash.
  • Side impact airbags keep the passengers and driver safe during a side impact or a rollover.
  • Knee airbags keep the lower body from sustaining serious injuries during an impact.
  • Overhead airbags keep the heads of the occupants safe during a rollover or severe rear impact.
  • Anti-whiplash headrests keep the heads supported and prevent neck injuries due to whiplash.
  • Antilock brakes prevent the wheels from locking up in the event of hard braking. Locked-up wheels are more prone to losing traction, leading the vehicle to enter an uncontrolled skid.
  • Stability control keeps watch on the vehicle's handling limits. It can reduce or limit engine power to make sure that the vehicle remains under the limits and in control of the driver.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration awards the 2013 Dodge Journey four-star overall rating . This rating comprises a four-star frontal crash and rollover rating and a five-star for side impacts. The frontal crash rating is broken down into five-star protection for the driver and four-star protection for the passenger. Similarly, the side-impact rating comprises a five-star rating for the front seat and four-star for the rear seat.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the Journey a "Good" score  for the most part, but the vehicle gets a "Poor" rating for small overlap towards the front. Even with one poor rating, the vehicle garnered the 2013 Top Safety Pick award from the testing body.

Optional safety features that can be found on the 2013 Dodge Journey are daytime running lights, rearview camera, and rear parking sensors.

The 2013 Dodge Journey can be found in five trim levels, AVP, SE, SXT, Crew, and R/T. All variants are available with five or seven seating options. The V6 engine and all-wheel drive options were available on trim levels SXT and above.

However, even the base variants are equipped with numerous features, which include:

  • Power mirrors, door locks, and windows
  • Cruise control
  • Keyless entry
  • Cooled glove box, which has a vent from the air conditioner
  • Audio system with a USB, which is hidden in the center console
  • Tilting and telescoping steering wheel

Moving up the trim ladder, you arrive at the SXT variant, which adds more features like:

  • Keyless starting
  • Premium sound system
  • Leather seating and upholstery
  • Under-seat storage bins
  • Dodge's UConnect, which provides a bundle of features like Bluetooth connectivity and a better infotainment interface

A step above the SXT is the Crew trim, which adds the following:

  • Automatic climate control
  • Remote start
  • Leather trim on the steering wheel

The R/T is the sporty variant and adds mostly appearance upgrades like:

  • Satin aluminum alloy wheels
  • Six-speaker premium audio system with 368-watt output
  • Red stitching on the accents
  • It also features a sportier suspension to deliver better handling and responsiveness

The UConnect, available on all trims above and including SXT, allows connectivity with smart devices and supports SD cards. It is operated using an 8.4-inch touchscreen with built-in navigation on Crew trim.

Fuel Economy

The Dodge Journey is not for those looking to save up on the fuel bill. However, it is not all that bad. It ranks about average when compared to other crossovers in its class. But if you step into the V6 market, the vehicle fares quite well.

The 2.4-liter, inline-four cylinder engine with four-speed automatic transmission gets EPA ratings  of 19 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on highways, and 21 mpg for combined running.

Swap in the 3.6-liter V6 coupled with a six-speed automatic, and the numbers change to 17 mpg in the city, 25 mpg on the highway, and 20 mpg combined for the FWD variant. The fuel economy dips a little with the AWD variant and comes to 16 mpg in the city, 24 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined.

As you might notice, there is not much difference in the numbers between the four-cylinder and V6, and this is why we recommend the V6 as it offers better performance and a bundle of other features. Although the numbers on the V6 do seem low, they compete quite well with other V6 crossovers in the class.

Price Range of 2013 Dodge Journey

The price of the Dodge Journey starts at around $7,000 and can go up to $19,000, with the average price sitting at around $13,000. The prices vary due to location, mileage, trim level, options installed, and vehicle condition.

Running Costs of 2013 Dodge Journey

It is estimated that the annual running costs of the 2013 Dodge Journey come to around $4,000, translating to $20,000. These numbers include fuel costs, insurance, maintenance, and repairs and are average compared to other vehicles in this class.

Insurance Costs for the 2013 Dodge Journey

Many factors play a role in the insurance costs of the vehicle. The most significant are the coverage level required, deductible, and insurance type you are opting for. Other factors like location, driving record, credit score, and even age and gender can influence insurance rates .

Reliability of 2013 Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey is average when it comes to reliability. Our experts rate it around 4 on a scale of five. It is not among the best, but not too bad. We feel that the annual maintenance costs on the nearly decade-old Dodge Journey can reach up to $700 per year, which is quite good.

We feel that frequency of maintenance is equally important for reliability. It does not make much sense to have a reliable vehicle only because you visit the repair shop now and then. The Dodge Journey fares quite well in this area, as it does not require major repairs too often. Our experts estimate that it will require major repairs, probably two times in three years of usage.

List Of The Best Years For The Dodge Journey: What Years To Buy

Finding out if the Dodge Journey is a good car to drive or not by taking a look at my guide

This section of the article will take a closer look into the top years of the Dodge Journey, which also have been mentioned above.

These models can be bought without hesitation because they have proven themselves reliable.

#1 Best Year: 2020 Dodge Journey

The 2020 Dodge Journey was the most reliable model, with no complaints related to reliability. Coming in the first place is the last model of the SUV to ever grace the market.

Although the acceleration is not that great, it is decent enough for people looking for something for their families while being relatively low on budget.

The interior of the SUV is roomy and comfortable too. The seating is comfortable enough that you will not need to rest every few minutes.

The manufacturer has done a decent job isolating the cabin from outside noises.

#2 Best Year: 2019 Dodge Journey

Coming up next is the 2019 Dodge Journey model of the three-row SUV. This is a great option for people looking to get a little more power.

There is also an option for getting a V6 engine, which will improve the ride quality and the acceleration. The steering and handling are good but not great.

Other than that, this model is vastly similar to 2020 one. It has many features, but Dodge’s infamous Uconnect infotainment system is not present here.

That is a bit of a downside, but it is usable. The cargo space can house most stuff people require.

#3 Best Year: 2018 Dodge Journey

Coming up next is a year older model of the Dodge Journey. This model showed that Dodge desperately needed to bring huge upgrades to this aging SUV.

They did discontinue it all together but not before they introduced models lacking in many regards.

But it has also proven to be surprisingly capable. The 2018 Dodge Journey model is proof of that.

Thanks to the option of getting a V6 engine under the hood, you will be able to get better acceleration and overall driving experience from this vehicle.

The interior is spacious. The steering and handling are responsive, but other competitors surpass it in this range.

#4 Best Year: 2017 Dodge Journey

The 2017 Dodge Journey is another one loved by the people who bought it.

You have two engine options, with the first one being the weaker 4-cylinder option while the second one being a beefy V6 engine.

The only problem with both of these is that the transmission is slow to respond while driving.

The 2017 Journey boasted high-quality materials. The cabin has also been designed in such a way that it provides maximum space.

Cargo space can touch 68 cubic feet, which is on par with other SUVs on the market.

#5 Best Year: 2016 Dodge Journey

The 2016 Dodge Journey model, which is six years old, has also made its way onto this list.

The only reason its successors have pulled ahead is that it does not have a good fuel economy and lacks safety features. Other than that, it is a fantastic three-row SUV.

I recommend buying the V6 engine instead of its weaker four-cylinder brother. It is a decent engine and will provide you with a pleasant driving experience.

The seats are comfortable enough for long rides. The infotainment system is great, but modern standards may feel a bit outdated.

#6 Best Year: 2013 Dodge Journey

Finally, coming in the sixth and final place is the 2013 Dodge Journey.

This model is almost a decade old, nine years to be exact, but it still holds up pretty well. It has earned the last spot on this list because of its weak 4-cylinder engine.

The fuel economy on this model is bearable, at 22 mpg. There are more than enough features for most people when talking about safety. So, the vehicle will keep you protected at all times.

For the time being, the 2013 Journey’s interior was the best in its entire class.

List Of The Worst Years For The Dodge Journey: What Years To Avoid

best year journey

Next up are the worst models of the Dodge Journey that one can buy.

These models should be avoided at all costs because they have had too many issues.

You will be surprised with how these models are placed, but you will understand better once I get into their details.

#1 Worst Year: 2009 Dodge Journey

The first-ever model of the SUV was also the worst one to ever enter the market.

Unfortunate owners of the 2009 Dodge Journey had several complaints, most of them related to the brakes and the electrical system.

The brakes would wear down prematurely while also creating a lot of noise when applied. This drives up the maintenance costs.

The electrical system would malfunction and would prevent the vehicle from starting.

Some owners also complained that the battery would drain fast. This issue is so common that it has also been discussed in the next section of this article.

#2 Worst Year: 2010 Dodge Journey

The 2010 Dodge Journey is more than a decade old at this point and is also one of the worst models yet. The very next model did not bring any major improvements.

It had similar issues, such as the brake wearing down and the vehicle vibrating a lot while applying them. The 2010 Dodge Journey also had a ton of engine issues.

The TIPM would become faulty. The engine would also not start, which made using this vehicle very frustrating. There were also complaints about the battery draining very quickly.

#3 Worst Year: 2012 Dodge Journey

Two years later, in 2012, the Dodge Journey was also a pretty unreliable model. It had many issues, with the most common related to the brakes and the electrical system once again.

The brakes would wear down very quickly, which would result in them not working adequately.

The AC system would also cause many problems for its owners. This is a frustrating problem, especially for people who live in areas that have extreme temperatures.

There was also a complaint about the blower motor emitting a lot of noise when being used. This was not frequently reported, so you don’t need to worry about it.

#4 Worst Year: 2011 Dodge Journey

The predecessor to the 2012 model has scored a better place.

This 2011 Dodge Journey model did have its fair share of issues, but there were very few complaints related to the electrical system compared to the other models.

The brakes were the main cause for concern in this model. Applying them would result in the shaking of the steering wheel. They would also squeal when applied.

The interior accessories were also known to cause many issues. There were reports that the radio would stop working.

It would also speed uptime, which is not a major issue but does make owning the vehicle a bit frustrating.

#5 Worst Year: 2013 Dodge Journey

Coming in fifth place is the 2013 Dodge Journey.

Although the manufacturer finally fixed the electrical and brake issues, there were still problems related to the air conditioning and the transmission system.

The transmission would slip, and many reports of it failing. The air conditioning would turn on by itself for some people.

This is a very annoying problem. The AC system would also fail, which would lead to an expensive fix.

The radio was also known to fail frequently. Although these problems are not major, they make this vehicle’s experience less positive.

#6 Worst Year: 2015 Dodge Journey

The final model on this list is 2015 Dodge Journey model. Although it is a seven-year-old model, it has proved itself one of the better models on this list.

There were engine and transmission issues, which helped this model, earn a spot on this list. The engine would suddenly die while driving. The CEL would also turn on frequently.

The transmission system would also frequently fail on the 2015  Journey. This problem is frustrating because transmission issues are often the most expensive to fix.

It is also recommended to replace the whole engine if the system fails.

What Are The Most Common Problems With The Dodge Journey?

Now that we are done with all of the important years, this article will focus on the most common problems that Dodge Journey has faced over the years.

It is recommended to read this section of the article in its entirety because it can influence your decision to buy the SUV.

1. Ignition Issues

The first problem on this list is also one of the most common ones.

Owners of the earliest models of the Dodge Journey, the 2009 and 2010 ones claimed that they could not start their SUV’s engine at times.

They also reported that a small click would be heard, which indicates a fully drained battery. Some people figured out the solution: to start the vehicle in neutral instead of in park mode.

If this does start your vehicle, then either the shifter cable or due to dirt and debris. The control wire terminal could also be corroded, leading to this issue.

Battery terminals can also be subject to corrosion, which prevents the batteries from producing and sending voltage.

2. Tapping Noise From The Engine

Another common complaint from the owners of the V6 variant of the Dodge Journey was related to tapping noises coming from the engine.

This issue was present in models that were introduced in 2011 and later. So, it can be found in the most recent models too.

There are two possible reasons why these tapping sounds can be emitted from the engine. It can either be the camshaft or the rocker arms.

If the rocker arms are causing the issue, you need to get them replaced as soon as possible. If the camshaft is to blame, you can expect a costly repair.

The fix is relatively inexpensive, but you can expect to pay a lot if the camshaft gets damaged if it is not treated.

3. Blend Door Actuator

Coming in third place is a problem that many Journey owners had an issue with. They complained that their vehicle’s A/C system would stop working.

The interesting thing is only one side of the system would stop working. It was reported that the HVAC system was at fault over here.

The failure is expected in all vehicles, but it is way too common on the Dodge Journey.

There were other similar issues too. Owners pointed out that the axle seals in the transmission system were also prone to leaking.

This was seen when oil droplets were seen under the SUV after being parked for a while. Oil leakage can cause engine failure if the amount drops by too much.

4. Parts Wearing Down

The final problem on this list is perhaps one of the most serious ones.

Owners complained that their vehicles’ timing belts would wear off rather quickly. They reported that the belt had to be replaced every 100000 miles, which is not good.

A replacement is necessary if it is causing too many issues. If the timing chain is faulty, it can lead to severe damage to the engine, which may only be fixed by replacing it entirely.

The brakes on the Dodge Journey are also prone to wearing off rather quickly. This is due to a low-quality wheel bearing, which must be replaced.

The fix is a bit costly, with each costing an average of $300.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. how many miles should a dodge journey last.

The Dodge Journey is a great car that can last for a long time with the right care and maintenance. It has proven to be a reliable vehicle, especially in the last few models.

How you treat your car and how often you drive it can last anywhere from 150,000 to 200,000 miles.

Make sure to keep up with the necessary tune-ups and oil changes, and you should be good to go.

Q2. Are Dodge Journeys Good In The Snow?

The Dodge Journey is a great car for the winter weather.

It has all-wheel drive capabilities that help it stay stable on slippery roads, and it has plenty of space for all of your gear when you need to transport supplies or equipment.

Plus, the heated seats are great for keeping you comfortable on cold days.

If you’re looking for a reliable car that can handle the snow, the Dodge Journey is a great option, albeit not the best one.

Q3. Does Dodge Journey Have A Four-Wheel Drive?

The Dodge Journey is a crossover SUV available with a four-wheel-drive system.

This system is designed to provide better traction and handling on rough terrain or bad weather conditions.

The improved traction is also perfect for driving in snowy terrains, where you can use as much handling power as possible.

The Journey is a good option if you’re looking for an SUV that can handle any terrain.

Q4. Does Dodge Still Make A Journey?

This crossover was a popular choice for families or anyone looking for a spacious and comfortable ride. Sadly, as of 2019, Dodge has retired the journey from its lineup.

Production officially ended in 2020, which means if you do look for a used one, you can find a fairly recent model.

Plus, they always cost less, so it is the perfect option for anyone looking to get a relatively inexpensive family SUV.

Q5. Are Dodge Journeys Good On Gas?

The fuel efficiency of the Dodge Journey is not that good.

You can expect around 19 mpg when driving in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. This gives you an average of 22 mpg, which is average.

Considering that this vehicle does not perform as well and struggles in the fuel efficiency department means that Dodge did not do much to improve it.

If you were looking for the best and worst years for Dodge Journey, then I can assure you that you will not be able to find a more detailed article than this one.

From all of the important years to the most common problems that users faced over the SUV’s 12-year history, everything has been covered over here.

Overall, the Journey is a decent vehicle, but if you do settle for a used one, I recommend that you go for a 2019 or 2020 model.

They have proven themselves to be the most reliable out of all. I hope this article helped you decide which Journey model is good for you.

best year journey

  • Extra versatility provided by a standard three-row seat
  • Low price for the segment
  • Lacks many modern safety and convenience features even in top trims
  • Below-average fuel economy
  • Disappointing and outdated base engine and transmission
  • Lags competitors in handling and drivability

What's new

  • Base trim renamed to SE Value
  • GT trim and V6 engine dropped
  • Part of the first Journey generation introduced in 2009

For 2020, the Dodge Journey is sent once more unto the breach in an attempt to woo you over with its low price and ... well, not much else. This small seven-seat SUV was once available in a multitude of trim levels and offered a strong optional V6 engine and available all-wheel drive. Now Dodge has stripped the Journey down and simplified it to only two trim levels and one available engine and transmission. It also can only be had in front-wheel drive.

Cost to Drive Cost to drive estimates for the 2020 Dodge Journey SE Value 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl 4A) and comparison vehicles are based on 15,000 miles per year (with a mix of 55% city and 45% highway driving) and energy estimates of $3.55 per gallon for regular unleaded in North Dakota.

Briefly ahead of its time, the Journey has been largely forgotten by Dodge and left with a low-budget interior, an underpowered engine and subpar driving dynamics. Even its low starting price isn't enough to make much of a case for the Journey since most of its main competitors can be had for similar money.

In its class, the Kia Sorento leads the way with more space, an abundance of features and an excellent warranty, with the stylish Volkswagen Tiguan coming in second thanks to its safety features and user-friendly tech interface. The recently rehabilitated Mitsubishi Outlander is a more distant third but is still a considerably better option than the Journey.

Performance

Fuel economy, which journey does edmunds recommend, 2020 dodge journey models.

All Journeys are powered by a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine (173 horsepower, 166 lb-ft) mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive has been available in the past, but all 2020 Journeys are front-wheel-drive.

Selecting the SE Value trim delivers a bare-bones experience, with manually adjustable cloth seats, 17-inch steel wheels with wheel covers, and a basic six-speaker audio system with a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Available to the SE Value trim exclusively are the Blacktop Package , which adds black exterior accents and black aluminum wheels, and the SE Value Popular Equipment Group , which includes a power driver's seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, satellite radio and three-zone climate control.

The Crossroad upgrades the seating surfaces to leather and brings a power-adjustable driver's seat. It also adds a sunroof and a larger 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment system and dresses up the exterior with body-colored mirrors and 19-inch alloy wheels. The Crossroad's Popular Equipment Group includes navigation, a more powerful audio system, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Journey

Though it arrives amidst lawsuits , social media sniping and infighting, Journey is turning 50 this year.

During that half century, the group has sold more than 100 million records worldwide, logging 11 platinum-or-better albums (including Diamond certifications for 1981’s Escape and 1988’s Greatest Hits) , earning eight top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 and 25 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s also been a reliable ticket-selling act for most of its career, and in 2017, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Journey’s is the story of eras. When the group originally formed in San Francisco in 1973, original manager Herbie Herbert helped bring together guitarist Neal Schon and keyboard player/vocalist Gregg Rolie from Santana, bassist Ross Valory and rhythm guitarist George Tickner from Frumious Bandersnatch and drummer Prairie Prince from The Tubes. Prince would be replaced by David Bowie/Frank Zappa skins man Aynsley Dunbar, while Tickner would leave after Journey’s self-titled first album in 1975. The remaining quartet recorded two more albums before Steve Perry came on board for 1978’s Infinity, which began the band’s run of multi-platinum smashes — also marking the first appearance of Alton Kelley and Stanley Mouse’s iconic scarab logo for the band. Dunbar was replaced by Steve Smith for 1979’s Evolution , and Rolie would leave in 1980 with Jonathan Cain of The Babys joining to help elevate the band to even greater fortunes on Escape and Frontiers .

The palette has been diverse, but there are common elements among Journey’s best songs — sturdy melodies and sing-along choruses, usually leading into one of Schon’s majestic guitar solos. But within that mold there’s also been plenty of invention and clever arrangements that have never been as formulaic as some of the band’s detractors (particularly during their early ‘80s heyday) would have you believe.

Journey has gone through its fair share of lineups, with singer Arnel Pineda on board since 2007 — the longest continuous tenure of any Journey frontman. The group released Freedom , it’s first new studio album in 11 years, in 2022, and despite the current legal fractures (which you can read about in detail here ), still they ride, as the Escape track says — and may they keep on runnin’ for a long time.

With all that in mind, here are our picks for Journey’s 10 best songs — not all of which come from the biggest hits.

"Someday Soon" ( Departure , 1980)

This album track from Rolie’s finally studio effort with the band is a hypnotic tone poem, with a ringing, cushy ambience and a hippie kind of optimism – not to mention the best give-and-take Perry and Rolie achieved during their time together in the band. It’s of course been eclipsed by Journey’s myriad hits (“Any Way You Want It” is the enduring top 40 Hot 100 hit from Departure ), but it’s a gem worthy of discovery.  Listen here.

"Escape" ( Escape , 1981)

The title track from Journey’s Billboard 200-topping studio album straddled the hard rock/pomp attack of the group’s mid-‘70s output with the melodic sensibility of the Perry-Cain axis. Its five-minute length provides room for the arrangement to stretch out and flow from one song part to the next, with a crunch that was part of Journey’s palette at the time. Listen here.

"Of a Lifetime" ( Journey , 1975)

The Journey of 1973-77 was certainly a different creature than the hitmaking colossus so many know and love. The group’s initial lineups flexed instrumental muscles, smoothly knitting together a number of styles more interested in the journey (ba- dum ) than any commercial destination. The first track from its first album is a prototype, leaning into blues, psychedelic rock and a touch of Latin, with the first of what would become many standout Schon solos, and a tuneful sturdiness delivered by Rolie’s soulful vocal. Listen here.

"Faithfully" (Frontiers , 1983)

Journey "Faithfully"

The melody of this top 20 Hot 100 hit came to Cain in a dream on a tour bus, and his paean to the struggle between home and the road was written in a half-hour. The result was a swoon-inducing ballad tailor-made for a sea of lighters (back then) and cellphone flashlights (now), capturing one of Perry’s best recorded performances and one of Schon’s most inspired solos. One of its great side stories is that Prince contacted Cain after he wrote “Purple Rain,” concerned that it might be too similar to “Faithfully.” Cain determined it wasn’t, but joked to Billboard that, “After seeing what it became, I should have asked for a couple of points….”

"Ask the Lonely" (single, 1983)

Recorded for Frontiers , this one wound up in the romcom Two of a Kind (starring the Grease duo of John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John) and rocked its way to No. 3 on the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Like “Only the Young,” which wound up in Vision Quest two years later, it showed that Journey was on roll – and well-suited for big soundtrack moments. Listen here.

"Who's Crying Now" ( Escape, 1981)

The best of Journey’s swoon songs — started by Perry while driving into Los Angeles and finished with Cain — has a subtlety and dynamic build that sets it apart from the many others of its ilk they’d create. The verse slips into the chorus with a soulful ease, and Schon’s guitar accents deftly build up to his searing solo at the end. The Escape single reached No. 4 on the Hot 100. Listen here.

"Feeling That Way" ( Infinity , 1978)

If fans at the time wondered how Steve Perry and Gregg Rolie would co-exist, this was the answer — an ebb-and-flow tradeoff that proved they could complement each other as lead singers as well as harmonize smoothly together (first evidenced by Infinity ‘s lead track “Lights”). Its medley-like pairing with the next track, “Anytime,” was gravy that would become a motif on the next few Journey albums. Listen here.

"Just the Same Way" ( Evolution , 1979)

Journey’s fifth album had a punchier sound than Infinity — though they shared producer Roy Thomas Baker — which worked to the benefit of the album’s first single. Led by Rolie’s piano and muscular lead vocal, with Perry responding on the choruses and bridge, it reached No. 58 on the Hot 100 in 1979. In a perfect world this would have been as big as anything from Escape or Frontiers, but it’s still a convincing introduction to the Rolie era of the band. Listen here.

"Don't Stop Believin'" ( Escape , 1981)

Journey "Don't Stop Believin'" (Live 1981: Escape Tour - 2022 HD Remaster)

More than a billion Spotify streams, a Library of Congress National Recording Registry placement and plays at virtually every sporting event around the world don’t lie — this one is Journey’s pinnacle of success. Created during a rehearsal at the group’s warehouse HQ in Oakland, Calif., it gave us the “streetlight people” of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip and put the non-existent South Detroit on the map. And it saves the chorus for the song’s end, after the guitar solo. A cross-generational hit? Believe it, gleefully.

"Stone in Love" ( Escape , 1981)

Schon reportedly called this “Stoned in Love” when he wrote the riff, and it’s certainly an addictive track that’s the best roll-down-the-windows-and-crank-it-up Journey fix you could ask for — not to mention a frequent show opener. A No. 13 Mainstream Rock Airplay hit in 1981, the song is practically a deep cut today. But its anthemic chorus is a spirit-lifter and the dynamic breakdown that segues into the song-closing guitar solo harks back to the ambitious musicality of the first few albums. “Stone” is a gem that still shines bright. Listen here.

How Long Do Dodge Journeys Last? (Miles & Years)

' src=

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV produced and marketed by Chrysler since 2008.

It had a decent run, pulling in thousands of sales yearly until its discontinuation after the 2020 model year.

The Dodge Journey, during its production run, was often criticized for its poor reliability, lackluster handling, and disappointing safety features.

We already looked at some of the most common problems with the Dodge Journeys , and in this article, we will look at an aspect that isn’t talked about very often-longevity.

Is longevity a strong point of the Dodge Journey, or does it lack in that aspect as well?

Let’s find out.

Table of Contents

How is the short answer to how long the Dodge Journey lasts:

On average, the Dodge Journey can last for 150,000 to 200,000 miles, subject to regular maintenance. A couple of users even reported having 200,000+ miles on their Journeys. If you drive 15,000 miles every year, you may be able to get 10 to 15 years out of your Dodge Journey.

best year journey

How Many Miles Can You Expect from a Dodge Journey?

If you own a Dodge Journey, you can expect 150,000 to 200,000 miles from it. However, the vehicle may struggle to reach those numbers if they don’t use and maintain it properly.

Also, we must mention that reliability is not a strong suit of the Dodge Journey. Regarding that, you might have to carry out major repairs from time to time.

How Soon Should You Expect Rust on a Dodge Journey?

Most vehicles are susceptible to rust and corrosion. However, some get rust faster than others.

Dodge Journey owners should expect rusts within the first two to six years.

Also, if you live in a Salt Belt region where roads are often salted, your Journey will likely get rusted sooner.

Our research also showed that parts of the Journey most likely to get rusted are the interior hinges, rotors, and the car bottom.

To help your Journey stay rust-free for longer, we advise keeping the interior dry always and using ceramic coating.

¨You should also wash your vehicle often as dirt accumulation could also invite corrosive substances.

How Long Do Dodge Journeys Last Compared to Similar Models?

Frankly, the Dodge Journey isn’t one of the top vehicles in its class, thanks to its mediocre and unfavorable ratings.

best year journey

The question then begs, “Even if it doesn’t measure up to the top crossover SUVs, does it at least last as long as they do?” We have provided answers to that below.

Dodge Journey Vs. Chevrolet Traverse

The Chevy Traverse launched back in 2008 and has gone on to become one of the top vehicles in its class. It ranks well above the Dodge Journey in pretty much every category except the starting price.

Chevy Traverses can last anywhere between 200,000 to 250,000 miles if regularly maintained. It also boasts excellent reliability ratings with relatively low functional issues.

Compared to the Dodge Journey, the Chevrolet Traverse is more likely to serve its owners longer. It is also more reliable and will develop less severe issues in the long run.

Please also read our article about how long the Chevrolet Traverse lasts .

Dodge Journey Vs. Honda CR-V

The Honda CRV has been around since 1997 and remains one of the best crossover SUVs in the market.

Not only does it have one of the best fuel economies for its class, it is also one of the longest-lasting vehicles.

With proper maintenance, the Honda CR-V can stay functional for 250,000 to 300,000 miles or more. We even found a number of owners who claim to have hit 400,000+ miles.

On average, Honda CR-Vs last longer than the Dodge Journeys, and they are also more reliable. It is a clear win for the CR-V.

Make sure to also read our article about how long the Honda CR-V lasts .

Dodge Journey Vs. Hyundai Tucson

best year journey

The Hyundai Tucson is the #1 crossover SUV, according to U.S. News. It has vast standard safety features, spacious seating, and comfortable handling. Besides all that, it is also one of the most durable SUVs in its class.

Hyundai Tucsons can last between 200,000-250,000 miles if they are adequately maintained. One owner on a certain vehicle forum claimed to have logged over 270,000 miles on his Tucson before selling.

The Hyundai Tucson and Dodge Journey will last around the same time. Both models are also very susceptible to early issues, but experts consider the Hyundai Tucson as the more reliable option.

How Reliable Is a Dodge Journey?

The Dodge Journey has suffered mixed reviews and reactions from experts and consumers concerning its reliability.

On U.S. News, the Dodge Journey has a critics’ rating of 4.8/10 and a performance rating of 4.9/10. It also landed at the 58th spot on their list of crossover SUVs.

RepairPal was a lot more generous, giving it a reliability score of 4.0 out of 5.

The 2019 Dodge Journey isn't one of the best midsize SUVs

These Are the Best Years of the Mixed Bag Dodge Journey

The Dodge Journey isn’t one of the best midsize SUVs. Of course, it has its fans, but this was never a vehicle that caused very much excitement. In many ways, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Still, there are many people who’d like to own a used Dodge Journey, and some model years are more reliable than others. There are actually quite a few recent models for buyers to pick from.

There are the best years of the Dodge Journey.

The Dodge Journey isn’t one of the best midsize SUVs for performance

Performance is one of the reasons people consider the Dodge Journey a bit of a mixed bag. It’s not awful in this regard, but the midsize crossover isn’t anything special when it comes to speed and power. This is one of the reasons it was so affordable while on the market.

The 2019 Dodge Journey is one of the best used models. Notably, production ended with the 2020 model. The 2019 Dodge Journey uses a 2.4-liter engine that makes 173 horsepower. According to Edmunds , it has a torque of 166 lb-ft and has front and all-wheel drive configurations. There is also a 283 horsepower 3.6-liter V6 option for the 2019 Dodge Journey.

Used Dodge Journey models are still on the road today

Regarding speed, the V6 powertrain accelerates from 0 to 60 miles per hour in about 6.5 seconds. This is slow for a vehicle with a V6, but it’s much better than the base powertrain. Some used Journey models from this year will have an 8.4-inch touchscreen.

Besides the 2019 Journey, buyers will be relatively safe with any model starting with the 2015. Overall, these have fewer complaints than earlier versions and the final one that came out for the 2020 model year. This means the second and third generations are the best bets for a reliable SUV from the lineup.

For the most part, the performance remained the same for the Dodge Journey. This is usually the case with short-lived models such as this. However, the automaker did make some changes for the 2020 Dodge Journey. Unfortunately, it dropped the V6 engine for the final version, which left many people remembering the Journey as being weaker than before.

Of course, it’s important to point out that no two vehicles are the same. For example, some used SUV buyers may consider the Journey among the best midsize SUVs . It’s because of this that it’s necessary to do the proper research. This means getting the complete history of any used vehicle you’re considering, even if it’s more universally liked than the Journey.

Every Journey and Steve Perry album ranked from worst to best

From stadium-filling rock to the ultimate lighter-waving ballads, AOR titans Journey and their various frontmen have done it all

Journey group shot

They are one of the biggest rock bands of all time, and their most famous song is the best-selling digital track from the 20th century. But for Journey, global stardom might never have happened if not for a hard-hitting ultimatum from their record company back in 1977. As the band’s original drummer Aynsley Dunbar recalled: “We were told: ‘Get a singer, get some hit songs or you’re off the label.’”

At that time, the San Francisco-based band had made three albums for Columbia Records, and all three had stiffed. Guitarist Neal Schon and vocalist/keyboard player Gregg Rolie had previously played in Santana , but Journey’s early music, mixing Santana-style jazz fusion and progressive rock, was a hard sell, and Rolie’s voice wasn’t the strongest.

Everything changed when Steve Perry joined the band after they’d tried out another singer, Robert Fleischman. With a richly expressive voice, Perry could hit high notes that other singers could only dream of. His first album with the band, 1978’s  Infinity , reinvented Journey as a mainstream rock act. The album promptly went platinum, and from there, the only way was up.

In the 80s, Journey became one of the biggest bands in America, with the Holy Trinity of AOR albums:  Escape ,  Frontiers  and  Raised On Radio . Perry also had a huge hit in 1984 with his first solo album, Street Talk . But the pressures of fame led Perry to quit the band in 1987, leaving Journey on hiatus until his return in 1995. And when he quit again two years later, he was gone for good.

How to replace the irreplaceable? Journey survived by finding the best Steve Perry impersonators on the planet. They made two albums in the early 2000s with Steve Augeri, formerly the singer in cult AOR band Tall Stories. And in 2007, when Journey’s classic hit  Don ’ t Stop   Believin ’  was featured in The Sopranos - making the song more famous than ever before, and putting the band’s name back in the spotlight - they unveiled a new singer who had been discovered via YouTube.

Filipino Arnel Pineda’s performance of Journey songs in covers band The Zoo was enough to secure him his dream job. He sounds uncannily like Steve Perry, and has now made three albums with Journey, including Freedom , released in 2022.

Perry, meanwhile, had withdrawn from public view for many years after leaving the band. But in 2018 he made a comeback with a solo album Traces , his first full-length recording since Journey’s Trial By Fire back in 1996. And if something had been lost over time - the power he’d had in his youth - it was still, unmistakably, the voice that made Journey the greatest AOR band of them all…

In the credits to Journey’s 1979 album  Evolution , the band stated, gratefully: “Columbia Records stands alone in the field of developing new artists.” The company’s ‘tough love’ approach certainly worked for Journey, who couldn’t buy a hit record until Columbia ordered them to find a proper singer and write some tunes.

Tellingly, the catchiest number on Look   Into The Future, the band’s second album, is a cover of The Beatles ’ It’s All Too Much . The other tracks run like a loose jam session, veering from prog to psychedelia, jazz to heavy rock. Despite the album’s title, the sound is stuck in the 60s.

17. Journey: Eclipse (Frontiers, 2011)

Journey got off to a strong start with Arnel Pineda on 2008’s million-selling Revelation, but the follow-up was an outright flop.  Eclipse was by design a heavy, guitar-focused album. As keyboard player Jonathan Cain said: “If people want to hear ballads, they can certainly find them on other records.”

But aside from the opening track, the mighty anthem City Of Hope , there is nothing on this album with the melodic power of a classic Journey banger like Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) . It’s all so much hot air. And if this album’s ballads slipped Cain’s mind, it’s hardly surprising.

16. Journey: Journey (Columbia, 1975)

“A strong beginning” said Rolling Stone magazine of Journey’s debut album. It certainly sounded as if some strong stuff was being smoked when they recorded it. With two former members of Santana in Neal Schon and Gregg Rolie, and an accomplished drummer, Englishman Aynsley Dunbar, who had played for John Mayall , Jeff Beck and Frank Zappa , this was a new band with an impressive pedigree.

Their musicianship dazzled on the instrumentals Kohoutek and Topaz, the latter written by rhythm guitarist George Tickner, who left the group after this album. But all that jazz-rock fusion showboating wears thin over 35 minutes.

15. Journey: Next (Columbia, 1977)

The band’s third album was the last before Steve Perry joined, and in its opening track from there was a hint of what was to come. Spaceman was a simple ballad, although Perry would never have sung, as Gregg Rolie did, “ I’m a cosmopolitan, right-handed wingless man .”

Another significant track was Hustler , as Journey moved towards a more straightforward hard rock sound, with shades of Deep Purple . And as the band’s first phase ended, they delivered the most bizarre song they ever recorded - People , a trippy number with Schon playing spaced-out licks and Rolie singing like John Lennon .

14. Steve Perry: Traces (Fantasy, 2018)

“I know it’s been a long time comin’,” Perry sang in the first line of the opening song, No Erasin’ . No shit. The release of Traces came 24 years after his previous solo album, and 22 years since his Journey swan song Trial By Fire .

Perry’s comeback, at the age of 69, was greeted as the AOR equivalent of the Resurrection, and amid such hysteria, Traces proved underwhelming, its blend of soft rock, pop and soul drifting into blandness here and there. But in No Erasin’ , the old magic was still there in what may be the last great song he’ll ever sing.

13. Journey: Generations (Sanctuary, 2005)

Singer Steve Augeri’s first album with Journey, 2001’s Arrival , was the best they ever made without Steve Perry. The follow-up, Generations , also had its moments - notably Faith In The Heartland and The Place In Your Heart , both of which were re-recorded with Arnel Pineda on 2008’s Revelation .

But in 2006 Augeri was out of the band. A serious throat infection had damaged his voice, and he was dismissed amid rumours that he had lip-synced on stage. His exit may have been ignominious, but Augeri’s contribution to Journey’s legacy should not be underestimated.

12. Journey: Freedom (BMG, 2022)

On Journey’s first album in more than a decade, only Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain remain from the band’s glory days. What’s more, two key contributors to this album - bassist Randy Jackson and drummer/songwriter/co-producer Narada Michael Walden - have since departed.

But as our own Geoff Barton stated: “ Freedom  passes the  Classic Rock  AOR test with flying colours.” The opening song Together We Run is quintessential Journey, and the epic Beautiful As You Are delivers a grand finale. And as Schon told Classic Rock , there is more to come. “As long as I’m here,” he said, “we’re gonna keep creating.”

11. Journey: Revelation (Frontiers, 2008)

Lightning can strike twice. In 2005, Foreigner found in Kelly Hansen a singer whose voice was a close match for that of the great Lou Gramm. And two years later, Journey discovered a young Filipino guy who could sing like Steve Perry.

It was a big ask for Arnel Pineda to make the giant leap from Journey covers band to the real thing, but he performed heroically on the aptly named Revelation - from the triumphant anthem Never Walk Away to the beautiful ballad Turn Down The World Tonight . Revelation became the band’s first million seller without Perry. For Pineda, there was surely no greater vindication.

10. Steve Perry: For The Love Of Strange Medicine (Columbia, 1994)

Perry’s first solo album Street Talk was a huge hit in 1984. Ten years later, his second solo record reached the US top 20 but failed to make much of an impact in a world dominated by alternative rock.

For The Love Of   Strange Medicine  had some fine songs - the dynamic opening one-to punch of You Better Wait and Young Hearts Forever , and the epic title track. But the ballads were unremarkable, and the album, as a whole, was somewhat overwrought and overproduced. Within two years, Perry’s return to Journey yielded the comeback album Trial By Fire . But the reunion wouldn’t last.

9. Journey: Trial By Fire (Columbia, 1996)

The second coming of Steve Perry ended in disappointment. With the definitive Escape -era line-up reunited, Journey should have delivered a great album. They managed only half that. On opener  Message Of Love  and the ready-made wedding song  When You Love A Woman , Journey achieved something close to peak form.

But the big rock epics,  Castles Burning  and  Can ’ t Tame The Lion , were all bluster. Trial By Fire  hit No.3 in the US, but the band’s comeback tour was aborted after Perry injured his hip in a hiking accident. Tragically, he never sang for Journey again.

8. Journey: Arrival (Columbia, 2001)

They were big shoes to fill, but New Yorker Steve Augeri proved a more than capable replacement for Steve Perry in Journey. With the new singer performing at such a high level, Arrival was the band’s best album since Raised On Radio .

Four tracks came right out of the top drawer: powerful opener Higher Place , one of several songs on the album co-written with Night Ranger’s Jack Blades; Signs Of Life , an anthem for the brokenhearted; and two majestic ballads,  All   The Way  and  Loved By You. Augeri had passed the test. And Journey had proved there was life after Steve Perry.

7. Journey: Departure (Columbia, 1980)

At the dawn of the 80s, Journey still sounded, and looked, somewhat dated. Van Halen ’s  Women   And   Children First  was released in the same month as  Departure  – March 1980. But where Van Halen sounded like the future, with the image to match, Journey were stuck in the 70s.

But no matter, a great song will always hit the spot, however old-fashioned the delivery. And there are many on Departure, including the jubilant  Any Way You Want It . Departure  was aptly titled. With Gregg Rolie set to quit, this was the last hurrah of the old Journey. Within a year the flares were gone and Journey were setting the template for 80s arena rock.

6. Journey: Evolution (Columbia, 1979)

Steve Perry’s pain was Journey’s gain. The band’s first Top 20 single,  Lovin ’ ,   Touchin ’ , Squeezin ’, was written after the singer saw his girlfriend kissing another guy. Perry described the song as “love justice”, but it was the sweetest kind of revenge; with its slinky blues groove and a killer ‘ na-na-na ’ coda, the song became a genuine rock standard.

Parent album  Evolution  was the second of two that Journey recorded with producer Roy Thomas Baker, whose previous clients Queen are echoed in the knowingly titled pomp-rock fanfare  Majestic . Also featured here is  Daydream , a long-forgotten masterpiece.

5. Journey: Infinity (Columbia, 1978)

Steve Perry was not a unanimous choice as Journey’s new singer. But when Perry presented the bluesy  Lights  to the band, everyone sensed the possibilities. Tellingly,  Lights  was chosen as  Infinity ’s opening track – an introduction to the new Journey – and it remains one of the band’s best-loved songs, as does this album’s  Wheel In The Sky .

Under pressure from Columbia Records, who’d done their bit by hiring Queen’s producer Roy Thomas Baker, the refocused Journey delivered their first set of accessible mainstream rock songs. The payoff was instant.

4. Steve Perry: Street Talk (Columbia, 1984)

The dreaded solo album signals the end for many a band. Steve Perry returned to Journey after making  Street Talk , but the balance of power had shifted; Perry would remodel Journey’s music on this album’s soul-influenced soft rock.

Perry relished the freedom of a solo project, crafting slick adult pop songs inspired by vintage soul music:  I Believe  a Motown tribute,  Captured By The Moment  mourning Sam Cooke and other lost heroes. The single Oh Sherrie hit number three on the US chart, powering Street Talk  to platinum status. The album is widely acknowledged as an AOR classic.

3. Journey: Raised On Radio (Columbia, 1986)

With Steve Perry heartbroken by his mother’s terminal illness, and bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith leaving due to “creative differences”, 1985 was Journey’s annus horribilis. But out of turmoil came the last classic Journey album.

After Perry’s solo debut  Street Talk  went platinum, the singer took control of the group. Neal Schon was sidelined as Perry’s pop and soul influences prevailed. Raised On Radio  was recorded three times before Perry was satisfied. But every nickel and dime they spent is audible in the deluxe soft rock of  Girl Can ’ t Help It  and  I ’ ll Be Alright Without You .

2. Journey: Frontiers (Columbia, 1983)

After the huge success of 1981’s Escape , Journey hit another home run with Frontiers . The album reached No.2 in the US and included two classic hits:  Separate Ways (Worlds   Apart) , one of the heaviest and most emotive tracks the band have ever recorded, and  Faithfully , the greatest power ballad of all time.

Journey never rocked harder than on  Frontiers , with Neal Schon really ripping on  Edge Of The Blade  and  Rubicon . The album would have been even better if  Ask The Lonely  and  Only The Young , two brilliant tracks, hadn’t been dropped in favour of  Troubled Child  and  Back Talk  the latter a real stinker. (The two discarded songs appeared on the album’s 2006 reissue.)

1. Journey: Escape (Columbia, 1981)

The greatest AOR album of all time, Journey’s first US No.1 made them stadium-filling superstars. And pivotal to its success was their new keyboard player: Jonathan Cain co-wrote every song on  Escape . “What changed about Journey,” Cain said, “is that I started writing about the people that cared about the band.”

Don ’ t   Stop Believin ’, an evocative tale of ‘ streetlight people, living just to find emotion ’, became an American classic.  Open   Arms  – rejected by his previous band The Babys – was a monster hit. With nine million copies now sold,  Escape  is Journey’s definitive statement.

Stone in Love

Stone in Love

In the heat with a blue jean girl Burning love comes once in a lifetime She found me singing by the rail road tracks Took me home, we danced by the moonlight

Those summer nights are calling Stone in love Can't help myself, I'm falling

Feeling That Way

Feeling That Way

Opened my eyes to a new kind of way All the good times that you saved Are you feeling You feeling that way too Or am I just Am I just a fool

Wheel in the Sky

Wheel in the Sky

Winter is here again, oh lord Haven't been home in a year or more I hope she holds on a little longer Sent a letter on a long summer day Made of silver, not of clay I've been runnin' down this dusty road

Wheel in the sky keeps on turnin' I don't know where I'll be tomorrow

Faithfully

And being apart ain't easy on this love affair Two strangers learn to fall in love again I get the joy of rediscovering you Oh girl, you stand by me I'm forever yours, faithfully

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

Someday, love will find you Break those chains that bind you One night will remind you How we touched and went our separate ways

If he ever hurts you True love won't desert you You know I still love you Though we touched and went our separate ways

Lights

When the lights go down in the City And the sun shines on the bay Ooh, I wanna be there in my City, oh Oh, oh, oh

Any Way You Want It

Any Way You Want It

She said, any way you want it That's the way you need it Any way you want it

I was alone I never knew What good love could do Ooh, then we touched Then we sang About the lovin' things

Send Her My Love

Send Her My Love

Callin' out your name I'm dreamin' Reflections of a face I'm seein' It's her voice That keeps on haunting me

Send her, send her my love Roses never fade Memories remain

Who's Crying Now

Who's Crying Now

One love, feeds the fire One heart, burns desire I wonder who's crying now? Two hearts, born to run Who'll be the lonely one? I wonder who's crying now?

Only the Young

Only the Young

Shadows of a golden age A generation waits for dawn Brave carry on Bold and the strong

Only the young can say They're free to fly away Sharing the same desire Burnin' like wildfire

Ask The Lonely

Ask The Lonely

You've got some fascination With you high expectations This love is your obsession Your heart, your past possession Let down your defenses Won't be up to the one who cares

Still They Ride

Still They Ride

Spinning 'round, in a spell It's hard to leave this carousel 'Round and 'round And 'round and 'round

Still they ride, on wheels of fire They rule the night Still they ride, the strong will survive Chasing thunder

Touchin', Lovin', Squeezin'

Touchin', Lovin', Squeezin'

It won't be long, yes, till you're alone When your lover, oh, he hasn't come home 'Cause he's lovin' who he's touchin', he's squeezin' another

He's tearin' you apart Ooh, every day, every day

Just The Same Way

Just The Same Way

Take a chance now the timing's right. You're free to leave the key to my life. Stay with me. Won't you stay the night, In the mornin' feelin' fine, yeah.

That's the same way you love me.

Girl Can't Help It

Girl Can't Help It

If he could hold her, so close in his arms again If she could show him The letter her heart forgot to send why They're livin' dreams on their own Ooh they'll never stop running

The girl can't help it, she needs more He hasn't found what he's lookin' for They're still standing in the rain He can't help it, and she's just that way

Be Good To Yourself

Be Good To Yourself

Runnin' out of self-control Gettin' close to an overload Up against a no win situation Shoulder to shoulder, push and shove I'm hangin' up my boxin' gloves I'm ready for a long vacation

Be good to yourself when, nobody else will Oh be good to yourself You're walkin' a high-wire, caught in a crossfire

I'll Be Alright Without You

I'll Be Alright Without You

I'll be alright without you Oh love's an empty face, I can't replace (You don't need it) People wonderin' why we broke apart The great pretender here I go again These things I do (It's all because of you) I'll keep holdin' but I'll try (Try not to think of you)

Mother, Father

Mother, Father

Through bitter tears And wounded years, those ties Of blood were strong So much to say, those yesterdays So now don't you turn away.

Suzanne, don't walk away

Why Can't This Night Go On Forever

Why Can't This Night Go On Forever

Lost in twilight, the memories Precious moments, you and me We've been old friends, all through the years Picture postcards, sharing tears

What's in our hearts, there's never time, to say Need you tonight, lover don't fade away I've seen your city lights As I walk away Why can't this night...go on forever

After All These Years

After All These Years

A faded wedding photograph You and me in our first dance Our eyes are closed We're lost in one sweet embrace Since those days the world has changed But our love remains the same God knows we've had our share of saving grace

Where Were You

Where Were You

I didn't know what the hell was goin' on, Someday you're gonna break. So don't try to get yourself straight, You're just a little too late.

Which Dodge Journey Years to Avoid and Why? (Explained)

The Dodge Journey is a mid-size crossover SUV that was built and sold by Stellantis’s Dodge brand. It features some different types of things for different needs.

However, the overall ratings of Dodge Journey are average. And there are some years that you should avoid.

In this article, I will talk about those worst years of the Dodge Journey and also some best years of the SUV.

Dodge Journey Years to Avoid (List of Years)

Dodge Journey is a good SUV with large space and comfortable seats. But there are several issues found by users of this SUV including interior water leaks, engine malfunction, gear problems, prematurely worn-out brakes, etc.

Here are the worst years of Dodge Journey that you should avoid buying:

  • 2009 Dodge Journey
  • 2010 Dodge Journey
  • 2011 Dodge Journey
  • 2012 Dodge Journey
  • 2013 Dodge Journey

2009-2011 models have some common brake problems that you should be aware of. They also have engine problems that can be troublesome for many people. Steering issue is yet another common problem of these three models.

The most common problem of 2012 and 2013 model of Dodge Journey is the bad transmission. You may see the brake issues and electric system malfunction as well.

Worst Years of Dodge Journey:

Dodge Journey 2009 model is the worst year that you need to avoid. According to Carcomplaints it has the most complaints reported by the users. Even they have recognized it as the worst model of Dodge Jounery.

What Makes These Dodge Journey Years Worth Avoiding?

Now, let’s go through the problems of these models one by one and see why you should avoid these SUVs.

2009 Dodge Journey Problems:

The Journey’s inaugural model year was 2009, and it received the most complaints among its other years.

As a point of perspective, since the 2010 model year, Car Complaints has only received fewer complaints regarding the Journey, with the majority of them being concerning the 2010 model year.

On the other hand, 2009 received about a thousand complaints.

When the brakes were applied, they wore down quickly and make a great deal of noise as well. The repair costs rise as a result of this.

There are also reports of engine problems such as slow run, not starting at all, etc.

The electrical system failed according to a lot of users, preventing the car from being able to be powered up. Some customers also claimed that the battery was draining too quickly.

There are also safety issues reported by many drivers. The airbags are sometimes delayed to open. And there are also brake issues which is a big safety concern.

Hence, you should avoid buying this SUV without thinking twice!

2010 Dodge Journey Problems:

Dodge Journey updated its look with the release of the new 2010-year Dodge Journey, which followed the release of the worst model by Dodge Journey in 2009.

Despite the fact that the model year received several upgrades, it was ranked as the second-worst model year of all time. It even received 3 recalls for safety issues.

Just like the previous one its major issue stays in the brake system. Premature worn-out brakes with brakes not working at all were reported by many users.

There were reports about the ignition switch which did not work properly. Sometimes even turning the on switch would not start the ignition.

The engine of this SUV is laggy and not the best you can get in the market. durability is also low for this engine.

The steering is bad according to many users. And it was one of the reasons for the recalls of Dodge Journey 2010.

2011 Dodge Journey Problems:

The Dodge journey 2011 could not fix the previous issues with its brakes. This model’s brakes have been the major source of worry. A shaky steering wheel is an outcome of using them. When used, they’d make a squeaking noise.

Another common problem was related to interior accessories. The radio was broken, according to the claims. It would also reduce wait times, which isn’t a big deal but may add to the frustration of owning a car.

The ac is also broken in some of the SUVs which needed repairing.

Engine problems and transmission malfunction are also reported about the Journey 2011. Due to these problems, the cooling system did not work properly and caused overheating, the gear shifting became rough, and so on.

2012 Dodge Journey Problems:

It seemed that Dodge Journey did not put much effort into solving the previous problems as needed other than some changes in the design.

The brakes problem still was a prominent issue of this SUV. Other than that, the electric system failure which caused damage to some interior electric devices was reported by many users. Some Journey 2012 could not start due to electric problems.

AC/heater was found bad by some users after using them only a few times. This was a quite low-grade product used in this SUV.

There were also complaints about the wheels and transmission. However, the number of reports was very few.

2013 Dodge Journey Problems:

The company, in this new model, put some effort and solved the brake problems and air conditioning issues but that was not good enough to solve all the problems. However, the total reports were less than the previous models.

The major problem that remains in this SUV is the transmission issue. Shaky driving and hard-to-move steering came with this issue. The gear shifting was not smooth and people had trouble at times.

Interior accessories such as the sound system, radio, lights, etc. were facing different problems and needed to be repaired. The maintenance cost was high in terms of the small fixes.

The electrical system breaking down was also mentioned by some users causing various problems including engine not starting, battery drain, light problems, etc. Few reports were made about the suspension.

Overall, this SUV is not worth buying as you can get better ones with just a few more bucks.

Which Dodge Journey Years are Safe to Buy?

There is some good Dodge journey that you can buy too. As the production of the SUV has been canceled you can get a second-hand Journey.

2020 Dodge Journey:

The most dependable vehicle of Dodge Journey was the 2020 model, which had no reliability issues reported.

Even if the acceleration isn’t outstanding, it’s good enough for carrying several people on a budget to consider buying one of them.

The SUV’s inside is spacious and well-appointed as well. You won’t need to take a break every so often since the seats are so comfy. In terms of noise isolation, Dodge has done a good job.

The only issue that can be said is that the engine is not top class and thus, the speed will stay low than fast cars.

2019 Dodge Journey:

The 2019 Dodge Journey is a good buy if you want a roomy SUV with a better engine. This may not be the best pick, but not the worst also.

It has a V-6 engine to power the SUV and speed up the acceleration. In terms of steering and handling, the 2019 Journey is not the best one.

It has ample space in the back with three rows of seats. You can put many things in the back as well. For daily use and a family trip, this car is a good choice.

Dodge Journey series is not a great pick if you consider the major or minor issues bugging this series. Even the engine in most of the models of the series is sluggish.

However, for a safe and slow journey with your family and friends, this can be a great option! And the price of the SUVs is quite low. And when you are buying a Dodge Journey, avoid the mentioned years.

Ranking All 52 Journey Songs From the ’80s

Journey moved more than 6 million albums in America in the '70s, most of them after Steve Perry joined in time for 1978's Infinity . Not bad.

Then their second proper studio album of the following decade, 1983's Frontiers , sold more than that all but itself. By then, however, they'd amassed so much commercial momentum that this LP was actually considered something of a letdown.

Journey kicked off the '80s with a trio of very different farewell projects as co-founder Gregg Rolie left the band. The Top 10 hit Departure arrived first as a proper studio album, selling three million copies. Journey followed that with Dream, After Dream (a little-heard largely free-form import movie soundtrack) and Captured , a double-platinum Top 10 live sendoff with two new songs.

Then Jonathan Cain supercharged the band's more recent pop-leanings, bringing along a new sensibility (and a song idea for their highest-charting single). Perry was still their honeyed frontman and Neal Schon was still their soaring guitarist – but something fundamental had changed.

The chart-topping Escape proceeded to reel off three Top 10 hits, while moving a career-best 10 million copies in the United States alone. Prior to that, they'd never had a song go higher than the No. 16 finish for 1979's "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin.'"

Journey couldn't quite reach those heights again, concluding the decade with 1986's double-platinum Raised on Radio . But they still spun off four more Top 20 hits.

Along the way, they issued a little more than 50 proper songs in the '80s, including B-sides, bonus tracks and stand-alone releases. Here's how they ranked, with comments and insight from my new Amazon best-selling rock and pop band bio, Journey: Worlds Apart : No. 52. "Back Talk" From: Frontiers (1983)

This song almost single-handedly kept Frontiers from becoming Journey's best '80s album . That's enough to earn this spot. No. 51. "Departure" From: Departure (1980)

Pretty but insubstantial, this brief instrumental was tucked into the middle of co-founding member Gregg Rolie's last proper studio effort with Journey. No. 50. "I'm Cryin'" From: Departure (1980)

Steve Perry usually had a canny ability to convey emotion. "I'm Cryin'," however, slipped off into abject mawkishness. No. 49. "Positive Touch" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

The demos for this album were completed with a click track rather than in a room together as Journey had typically done in the past. That left drummer Steve Smith to either copy these metronomic sounds – heard to teeth-grating effect on "Positive Touch" – or to stay home. Partway through the sessions, it became the latter. No. 48. "Liberty" From: Time3 (1992)

A Frontiers -era leftover for those who wondering what Journey would sound like as a country band. No. 47. "Troubled Child" From: Frontiers (1983)

Another Side Two dud. Replace this with "Only the Young" or "Only Solutions," and all is forgiven.

No. 46. "Happy to Give" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

Perry had trouble nailing the vocal on this too-atmospheric ballad, which should have told them something. (In fact, it got to the point where Cain started calling "Happy to Give" Perry's "pet song.") It's understandable: "Happy to Give" grew out of a soundtrack idea Cain had, and it sounds like it. Journey never played the song live. No. 45. "La Raza Del Sol" From: B-side of "Still They Ride" (1981)

The song's heart is in the right place, as Cain finds inspiration in the plight of immigrant California farm workers. Unfortunately, that narrative is surrounded by a meandering music bed that sounds like a rightly discarded leftover from their pre-Perry days. No. 44. "Mother, Father" From: Escape (1981)

An overwrought, understandably disjointed song that was pieced together from two separate ideas by Perry and Schon, then completed with another interlude written by Schon's dad. No. 43. "All That Really Matters" From: Time3 (1992)

Jonathan Cain took over the mic for this Frontiers outtake, returning to a sound that's more in keeping with his earlier tenure in the Babys . That's fine, but it's not Journey. No. 42. "Homemade Love" From: Departure (1980)

Despite discovering a newfound chart prowess, Journey was still prone to longing looks back to their earliest musical excesses. In keeping, this sludgy, clumsily salacious song couldn't have sounded more out of place on Departure . Positioning "Homemade Love" as the album-closing song made even less sense. No. 41. "Dixie Highway" From: Captured (1981)

"Dixie Highway" sounds like what it was: a throwaway track written on Journey's tour bus while traveling the eponymous interstate into Detroit. It was perhaps interesting enough to be tried out live, but not interesting enough to make it onto a studio album.

No. 40. "Keep On Runnin'" From: Escape (1981)

A pedestrian rocker, "Keep on Runnin'" is the only stumble on Side One of Journey's biggest-ever selling album. No. 39. "Dead or Alive" From: Escape (1981)

The second of two throwback-style songs on Escape that seek to approximate Journey's more rugged, fusion-leaning '70s-era, and the lesser of the pair. That "Dead or Alive" came directly after the too-similar "Lay It Down" didn't do the song any favors, either. No. 38. "Escape" From: Escape (1981)

Cain and Perry are credited as co-composers, but the title track from Escape still feels like the first of what became a series of not-always-successful attempts by Neal Schon to balance Journey's new knack for balladry with ballsier rock songs. That's certainly the role it played in contemporary setlists after he became the band's sole remaining original member. No. 37. "Line of Fire" From: Departure (1980)

A perfunctory rocker best remembered for a sound effect at roughly the 2:10 mark that Perry cribbed from Junior Walker's chart-topping 1965 R&B hit "Shotgun ." No. 36. "Precious Time" From: Departure (1980)

Rolie adds a gurgling harp squall, but not much else stands out.

No. 35. "Lay It Down" From: Escape (1981)

Steve Smith approximates early drummer Aynsley Dunbar's thudding, heavy-rock approach while Schon swirls into the stratosphere on one of two songs from Escape that could have seamlessly fit into a Rolie-era album. No. 34. "Chain Reaction" From: Frontiers (1983)

Schon finds a fusible groove, then joins Perry for a gutty vocal interplay. But "Chain Reaction" ends up getting lost somewhere along the way. No. 33. "Once You Love Somebody" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

They tried for a bluesy feel on a song echoing the relationship troubles that both Perry and Cain were then experiencing, but there's simply not enough grit to this. No. 32. "Natural Thing" From: B-side of "Don't Stop Believin'" (1981)

Your average classic rock radio-loving fan might not peg Steve Perry as a died-in-the-wool R&B guy who can totally pull off this sometimes very un-Journey style. Tell them to start here. No. 31. "Rubicon" From: Frontiers (1983)

This song drove a seemingly permanent wedge in the band. Schon said he was playing "Rubicon" when Perry walked over and turned down his amp . He argued that fans wanted to hear his voice rather than all of those guitars. They put out only two more albums together, and it took them 13 years to do it.

No. 30. "Frontiers" From: Frontiers (1983)

The second-best song on this album's deflating flip side. Singing in a clipped, coolly detached tone, Perry offers a great put-down for heartless generals and politicians: " War is for fools; crisis is cool ." No. 29. "It Could Have Been You" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

Schon's riffy contributions work in brilliant counterpoint to Perry's poignancy, underscoring why this partnership meshed so easily – and so well. No. 28. "Where Were You" From: Departure (1980)

There's a reason Journey opened their concerts with "Where Were You" for so long. It simply crackles with energy. They were just coming off an opening gig with AC/DC at this point, and the headliner's knack for outsized, riffy rockers obviously rubbed off. No. 27. "Little Girl" From: B-side of "Open Arms" (1981)

"Little Girl" was the the only proper song from 1980's Dream, After Dream , a soundtrack that's not part of the band's main catalog since it's otherwise filled with incidental music for a now-forgotten foreign film. Elsewhere, the instrumentals provide an untimely restatement of their old penchant for prog and fusion, considering Journey was already on a pop-chart roll. Dream After Dream disappeared without a trace once Journey issued  Escape , and the too-often-overlooked "Little Girl" only saw U.S. release as the B-side to their "Open Arms" single. No. 26. "Raised on Radio" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

Radio holds a talismanic place in Perry's imagination for two reasons. His absent father owned a station. At the same time, it's a constant presence in the youthful places where he returns, time and time again, for creative sustenance. If things had gone another way, Perry has said he could see himself as a DJ, rather than a huge pop star. No. 25. "Ask the Lonely" From: Two of a Kind (1983)

Jonathan Cain once said Perry could write love songs in his sleep , and this only-okay leftover is an example of that assembly line-type approach. Yet, he gives his whole heart to every line. "This is my big theory on Steve Perry: Beyond being a great vocalist, I think the secret and maybe why generations connect with him is he is an empath," former Rolling Stone editor David Wild told me. By the end, "Ask the Lonely" still proves to be a better choice that most of what appeared on the back end of Frontiers .

No. 24. "Why Can't This Night Go on Forever" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

Written in tribute to their fans, "Why Can't This Night Go on Forever" moved past its quite overt "Open Arms" / "Faithfully"-style ambitions on the strength of performances by Schon and Perry.

No. 23. "The Eyes of a Woman" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

Steve Smith only appeared on three Raised on Radio tracks, but that doesn't mean he didn't have an undeniable impact. His anticipatory rhythm builds this quiet tension on the underrated "The Eyes of a Woman," as Schon's echoing chords surround the vocal. Perry has called this one of his favorite Journey songs, and that might be because "The Eyes of a Woman" is one of the very few here that fully recalls their Escape / Frontiers -era midtempo sound.

No. 22. "Suzanne" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

If Steve Perry sounds a little overwhelmed on the second single from this album, there's a reason for that. This No. 17 hit was written in tribute to an actual crush – framed as a fantasy encounter with a film star who also had a singing career. He never revealed her name.

No. 21. "Edge of the Blade" From: Frontiers (1983)

Side Two of Frontiers gets off to a roaring start. Buckle up, though. As things progress, you're in for a bumpy ride.

No. 20. "Be Good to Yourself" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

A throwback Top 10 rocker, "Be Good to Yourself" had little in common with the sleeker, more adult-contemporary feel found elsewhere on Raised on Radio . It didn't make for the most representative lead single, but manager Herbie Herbert insisted – because "Be Good to Yourself" sounded the most like Journey on their previous two albums.

No. 19. "I'll Be Alright Without You" From: 'Raised on Radio' (1986)

Schon, who earned a co-writing credit with Cain and Perry, told me he tried out a then-new guitar in search of a distinct sound for this song. Best known for using a 1963 Fender Stratocaster, Schon experimented with a graphite Roland 707 to see if he could get a different, more even tone. It worked: "I'll Be Alright Without You" remains Journey's penultimate Top 20 hit, followed by 1996's "When You Love a Woman." Cain, like Perry, was going through a breakup and called this track the other half of the emotions expressed in "Once You Love Somebody."

No. 18. "Only Solutions" From: Tron (1982)

Unjustly forgotten, and barely used in the film at all, the hooky "Only Solutions" would have greatly enlivened what turned out to be a letdown on Side Two of Frontiers .

No. 17. "People and Places" From: Departure (1980)

A circular vocal effect makes the song's larger point, as Perry and Schon share a vocal that examines life's maddening duality.

No. 16. "Faithfully" From: Frontiers (1983)

Journey was in the midst of a two-leg, 132-show tour in support of Escape and Jonathan Cain was feeling disconnected from his then-wife. Cain noticed the moon above their tour bus and, to him, "it looked like the midnight sun." He wrote that down then fell asleep. Upon awaking, Cain said the rest of "Faithfully" came to him in a rush. He wrote it in his own key, and that allowed Perry to explore a different vocal timbre. "'Faithfully' is to die for. I mean, Jonathan Cain's lyrics are amazing, and Steve Perry gave it everything he had," original MTV VJ Martha Quinn told me. "From the opening lines, he's just absolutely dripping with emotion. Every time you put the needle down, you can just feel it." Journey finished the song with a memorable back-and-forth between Perry and Schon, also completely unrehearsed.

No. 15. "Walks Like a Lady" From: Departure (1980)

A great example of the way Journey songs evolved in the studio. Perry brought in a rough sketch, Schon added a blues-inspired riff, then Smith picked up his brushes. All that was left to complete things was Rolie's greasy Hammond B3 groove, and he said it's one of his favorites.

No. 14. "Girl Can't Help It" From: Raised on Radio (1986)

Perry essentially took control of Journey in the run-up to this album, switching out band members for sidemen with whom he'd worked before then serving as the project's de facto producer. That led them to some song treatments that moved well away from anything Journey had done before, or since. "Girl Can't Help It," one of three Top 40 singles from Raised on Radio , was another exception. This was classic Journey, spit-shined up for a new era.

No. 13. "After the Fall" From: Frontiers (1983)

Perry began this song on the bass, perhaps an early indication of the changes in store for Journey. By the time they released 1986's Raised on Radio , Ross Valory had been replaced by Randy Jackson, later of American Idol fame. Smith departed too, but not before proving himself utterly invaluable here.

No. 12. "Good Morning Girl" / "Stay Awhile" From: Departure (1980)

Inextricably linked by their successive appearances on Departure , these two songs showcased Perry's dual gifts: "Good Morning Girl" was a fragile, impossibly beautiful ballad that emerged from a jam session with Schon, while "Stay Awhile" showed off his R&B chops.

No. 11. "Who's Crying Now" From: Escape (1981)

The initial single from Escape , a No. 4 hit, perfectly illustrates how Cain's new presence impacted Perry's writing style, then forever changed Journey. The first inklings of the track came to Perry as he was driving up to San Francisco on Route 99. But "Who's Crying Now" was a song with no real direction until Cain suggested the title. They worked out a cool b-section featuring only voice and keyboard, and their very first co-written composition was completed. "He helped me go to another place as a writer," Perry later gushed in Joel Selvin's Time3 liner notes. Inspired, Perry also fought to keep Schon's extended guitar solo on the single.

No. 10. "Someday Soon" From: Departure (1980)

The final major vocal collaboration featuring Perry and Rolie and, still, one of the more memorable for its thoughtful optimism. There were plenty of reasons for this upbeat outlook, even though "Someday Soon" appeared as Rolie exited. Departure reached the Billboard Top 10, then the band's highest-charting effort ever. Meanwhile, a subsequent, wildly successful tour was chronicled on 1981's Captured . But why weren't there more of these duets? "I didn't want to quit singing, but it got diminished, there's no doubt," Rolie told me. "I don't think Perry really liked me singing. 'I'm the singer.' Well, OK. But my answer to that is, you know, the Beatles did great with four singers. Four, right? Not one."

No. 9. "Open Arms" From: Escape (1981)

Jonathan Cain brought this to Journey after John Waite , the frontman in Cain's former band the Babys, rejected an early version. Schon didn't really want "Open Arms" either, but Perry intervened. He knew just what to do with it. "He was fascinating to write with because he's such a technician. I'd never worked with a vocal perfectionist," Cain told me. "I mean, he would memorize every line as we wrote it, then his voice — he'd put it in the register we wanted and deliver it how we wanted it. Steve rehearsed everything as we wrote it, so then when we got into the studio or rehearsal, he knew where it lived in his range. He was very specific about what words he wanted to say. I was kind of taken with it." That helped turn "Open Arms" a soaring paean to renewal. Oh, and Journey's highest-charting single ever.

No. 8. "Still They Ride" From: Escape (1981)

Cain and Schon earned co-songwriting credits on the lonesome "Still They Ride," and Steve Smith showed off an accomplished dexterity. But this song belonged in no small part to Perry. Its main character, Jesse, never left the town of his youth, and still drives through its darkening streets looking for some connection. Perry has admitted that this dreamer who refuses to give up on his youthful reverie works as a metaphor for himself. If you'd found yourself in mid-century Hanford, California, you might have seen Journey's future singer doing the same thing. Along the way, a touchingly emotional trip back to Perry's San Joaquin Valley youth showed that the seemingly ageless Escape could still produce a Top 20 single, more than a year after its release.

No. 7. "The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love)" From: Captured (1981)

"After I left," Gregg Rolie told me, "it became more pop rock. It was a little heavier when I was in it." That transformation started with "The Party's Over," a Top 40 studio song tacked onto a live project which marked Rolie's exit. Journey's original keyboardist doesn't even appear on the track. Instead, the session featured Stevie "Keys" Roseman, who was later part of VTR with Ross Valory and George Tickner. He'd been working on a later-shelved project with Tickner, Valory and Schon in the next studio. He still hopes to have the old masters "baked so they can be released in some format," Roseman told me. "Neal played a couple of unbelievable solos that still need to be heard."

No. 6. "Stone in Love" From: Escape (1981)

Schon had a tape recorder going while he fooled around with the guitar during a party at his house in San Rafael. Perry and Cain did the rest. "Stone in Love" subsequently charted in the U.K., but never appeared on the main Cashbox or Billboard charts in America. After the release of "Open Arms" and "Still They Ride," however, it provided a welcome reminder that Journey had not given themselves completely over to balladry.

No. 5. "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" From: Frontiers (1983)

Cain and Perry looked on, feeling a little helpless, as Valory and Schon endured painful divorces. "There's got to be a more soulful way of looking at this," Perry countered in the Time3 liner notes. Just like that, the pair had the makings of the Top 10 opening single from Frontiers . "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)" so energized Journey that they began performing it onstage before Perry had completely learned the words. Then they filmed a video that sharply divided some fans. "Rock aficionados may have said, 'Oh, that was cornball,'" Martha Quinn told me. "Well, ask people that are still doing send-ups today, down to every last camera angle. Those people love that video. That's something else you couldn't have predicted that would have stood the test of time — but it has. People love it."

No. 4. "Send Her My Love" From: Frontiers (1983)

One of four Top 40 hits found on the album, the lonesome No. 23 anthem "Send Her My Love" is notable for an ambient turn by Schon (he used a high-end Lexicon 480L echo unit) and perhaps the most intriguing drumming contribution on Journey's string of familiar ballads from Steve Smith. A jazz lover who later founded his own combo, Smith added a slyly involving polyrhythm lifted from Miles Davis' "In a Silent Way." "The drummer on that was Tony Williams," Smith told me, "and he played quarter notes with a cross-stick on the snare drum — a very hypnotic groove." Same here.

No. 3. "Only the Young" From: Vision Quest (1985)

Another song that, had it been included, might have pushed Frontiers past Escape as Journey's best Cain-era album. Instead, "Only the Young" appeared much later on this soundtrack, and by then Kenny Sykaluk – a 16-year-old fan suffering from cystic fibrosis – had already died after becoming the first person to hear it . The song is now credited with bringing Journey back together after a period of solo projects. "Only the Young" eventually opened every concert on Journey's subsequent tour, too. Still, it will be forever associated with Sykaluk's brave fight.

No. 2. "Any Way You Want It" From: Departure (1980)

Perry said the vocal and guitar interplay on "Any Way You Want It" was inspired by the performances of Phil Lynott , after Thin Lizzy opened for Journey. So, Perry sang "she loves to laugh," and Schon responded with a riff. Perry sang "she loves to sing," and Schon responded again. Then "she does everything" led into another guitar riff — just like Thin Lizzy might have. Perry and Rolie then brought a tight focus to the bursts of shared vocals that close things out, fashioning Journey's second-ever Top 40 hit – but not before Rodney Dangerfield's character in Caddyshack broke out in a hilariously awkward dance as "Any Way You Want It" blared out of a golf bag radio.

No. 1. "Don't Stop Believin'" From: Escape (1981)

It wasn't the biggest song of the year. In fact, "Don't Stop Believin'" finished at No. 72 on Billboard magazine’s year-ending Hot 100 singles of 1982. It wasn’t even the biggest song from Escape , which spun off not one but two songs that finished higher on the charts. It didn’t have a typical song structure, not referencing the title until 3:22 in, after three verses, two pre-choruses, and some abbreviated instrumental passages. It's set in a place — South Detroit — that doesn’t actually exist. So how did this become Journey's defining moment? "Who wants to keep believing? That would be everybody, you know?" Jonathan Cain told me. "And I think it's a certain song in uncertain times. You have this certainty about that song, and it has this rhythm to it that's just very assuring and very sure of itself. From the beginning piano line, it speaks — and it speaks to hope. I think people are looking for hope."

7 of the best all-inclusive experiences to book this year, from a travel planner

  • As a travel planner, my clients seem to be increasingly interested in all-inclusive trips .
  • Some of my favorite luxury resorts are in Costa Rica, the Maldives, and Isla Mujeres.
  • Cruises, group tours, and adults-only lodgings can also come with all-inclusive options.

Insider Today

As a travel planner at Marvelous Mouse Travels , I know vacations are expensive — especially if you're looking to go somewhere this summer . But all-inclusive travel is often a great way to get the most value out of a luxury experience.

I've been on several all-inclusive vacations with my family, friends, and work, and I've helped other people book them in destinations around the world .

Here are some of the best all-inclusive experiences I'm recommending to my clients this year.

Try a split-stay vacation to see the best of Costa Rica.

best year journey

Costa Rica is one of the most sought-after vacations , and for good reason. It's great for both relaxation and adventure.

I recommend booking a split stay, starting at an all-inclusive resort in Guanacaste near the beach for some fun in the sun and moving to a resort near the famous Arenal Volcano for a jungle adventure.

Some of my favorite resorts in Costa Rica are the Westin Reserva Conchal and the Dreams Las Mareas. And if you're looking for an even more unique experience, check out the glorious swim-out suites with private pools at Dreams.

Baglioni Maldives is one of my favorite all-inclusive resorts.

best year journey

The Maldives, a remote set of islands in the Indian Ocean, offers a plethora of resort options for couples and families, but Baglioni Maldives is my favorite.

For many in the US, getting to the islands can be daunting — there are very few direct commercial flights, and it can take almost an entire day. But it's hard to beat the country's luxury accommodations and gorgeous landscape.

The Maldives also has some of the most beautiful marine life and coveted spots for snorkeling and scuba diving.

No matter where you go, overwater bungalows are the ultimate all-inclusive splurge.

best year journey

Overwater bungalows — villas standing on poles over open ocean water — are prevalent at all-inclusive resorts in destinations like the Maldives, Fiji, and Bali.

But I've also come across the luxurious accommodations at select adults-only Sandals Resorts throughout the Caribbean.

I think having a private villa on the water is the perfect way to unwind and relax.

Adults-only vacations are on the rise.

best year journey

Traveling with kids can be a blast, but I also think it's important for adults to take a much-needed break on their own.

Adults-only resorts have been a total respite for me and my husband after hectic months of juggling work with our kids' school and sports schedules.

If you're looking to unwind with a partner, relax on a girls' trip, or even connect with your adult children, there are countless adults-only, all-inclusive resorts to choose from, depending on where you're looking to visit.

Some properties, including Sandals and Beaches Resorts, also offer butler service. Designated staff members can help with anything from room requests and dining reservations to cabana rentals and transportation coordination.

I upgraded to the service at my favorite adults-only spot, Le Blanc Los Cabos, and I felt totally pampered.

Isla Mujeres is pure luxury.

best year journey

Isla Mujeres, a small island off the coast of Cancún, is known for its crystal-clear, turquoise water and peaceful vibe. It's also home to Playa Norte, one of the best beaches in Mexico .

Impressions Isla Mujeres by Secrets is a gorgeous all-inclusive resort on the island. It offers luxury at its finest, but with only 125 rooms, it has a boutique feel.

One of my favorite features of the resort is the waterslide that leads right into the beautiful ocean.

There are plenty of all-inclusive packages at sea.

best year journey

Cruising is one of the most popular vacations , whether it's an epic adventure on a Royal Caribbean Cruise, a couples-only journey on Virgin Voyages, or a regal tour of Europe on Viking River Cruises.

Although cruises aren't traditionally considered all-inclusive, with the right booking, they can have the same feel as a luxury resort.

Most cruise bookings include food, nonalcoholic drinks, and live entertainment. If you add beverage packages and excursions in advance, your trip should be fully paid for before you depart.

Book a small-group or private tour if you're looking for adventure.

best year journey

Group travel is a great way to explore new places while soaking up culture and history.

Popular destinations include Italy, Japan, Costa Rica, and Alaska, and many travel companies take care of everything for you, essentially making it all-inclusive.

I like Adventures by Disney , which offers small-group travel all over the world facilitated by seasoned guides. All the trip details are taken care of, including experiences, food, lodging, and transportation.

Additionally, Kensington Tours offers luxury private travel where every facet of the trip is meticulously planned for you.

Biden's 50-year journey as a skeptic of Roe v. Wade to its ultimate protector

A triptych showing Biden between an anti-abortion protester in 1989 and a pro-choice protester in 2024

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. — Standing outside Joe Biden’s church in this seaside town, the Rev. William Cocco mulls a question the president has grappled with over his long political career: How does a practicing Catholic defy church teaching and come out in favor of abortion rights, as Biden has done?

“I think it’s very difficult to reconcile that,” Cocco said in an interview this month after he presided over a service at St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church. “Life is a gift from God.”

Biden would have been at Mass that day, lining up for communion with the other parishioners, but he hurried back from his vacation home for meetings about Iranian plans to attack Israel.

An irony of Biden’s final campaign is that one of the most vexing issues he has ever confronted personally — abortion — is now central to his political survival. Biden’s campaign and his entire party have made abortion a defining issue in his re-election bid, hoping to rally female voters alarmed by Republican efforts to roll back reproductive freedoms.

The young Catholic politician who once said the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade ruling that safeguarded abortion rights “ went too far ” — and who to this day remains uneasy with the procedure — is casting himself as the only thing standing between women and strict national abortion bans.

He vows to chisel Roe’s protections into law if he’s re-elected and secures friendly majorities in Congress, quashing a GOP-led push to forbid most abortion procedures. On Tuesday, Biden is scheduled to give a speech in Tampa, Florida condemning the state's new six-week abortion ban.

Jennifer Klein, director of the White House’s Gender Policy Council, recalls Biden’s reaction upon hearing that the Supreme Court had overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Thinking through the decision in the Oval Office, “he was angry,” Klein said in an interview. “He went quickly to the fact that this had never been done before and the Supreme Court had never overturned a fundamental freedom. He also went immediately to what might come next: If they take away this right, what other rights would be under attack?”

Biden may have little choice but to put abortion rights front and center. He is running about even with Donald Trump in the polls, despite Trump’s myriad legal troubles. Voters largely don’t know about Biden’s legislative victories, nor do they credit him with strong economic growth, opinion surveys show.

Biden needs something to jolt the electorate and galvanize voters who may feel his candidacy is uninspiring. Many allies see abortion as the answer. Polls suggest that voters already trust him on the issue. Asked which of the two candidates is closer to their views on abortion and same-sex marriage, 48% of registered voters in Pennsylvania — a key swing state — chose Biden, compared with only 35% who picked Trump, a Franklin & Marshall College poll this month found.

Hoping to ensure women retain access to abortion and, as a bonus, juice voter turnout in November, Democrats have been filing ballot measures that would enshrine abortion rights in Arizona and other battleground states. And Biden’s campaign has gone all in, churning out ads , news releases and social media posts casting him as a stalwart defender of the abortion-rights movement.

Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, a Democrat who has pushed reproductive rights as a top issue in his state and founded a nonprofit group that is supporting abortion referendum efforts in multiple states, predicted abortion could “absolutely” decide November’s election.

“There’s a strong portion of the Biden coalition that is motivated on the issue and a strong group of people who might otherwise have stayed home but for the fact that the Dobbs decision [overturning Roe] came down and now this is a major threat to people all over the country,” Pritzker said in an interview.

Biden’s 50-year evolution from Roe skeptic to Roe adherent mirrors that of many Americans and the Democratic Party itself. The party’s presidential platform in 1972 — the year Biden was first elected to the Senate — carried not a single mention of abortion. By 2016, the year Hillary Clinton was the party’s nominee, the platform was chockablock with vows to defend abortion rights to the hilt.

Joe Biden at his desk

The issue has been particularly fraught for Biden, an 81-year-old steeped in Catholic teachings and reliant on religious faith to cope with unthinkable tragedy: the deaths of two children and his first wife, Neilia.

“One of the things that carried him through his numerous difficulties is his Catholic approach of giving yourself to the Lord,” said Ted Kaufman, a longtime Biden confidant and his former Senate chief of staff.

On a human level, Biden has never fully overcome his misgivings about abortion. That’s evident even in the language he occasionally uses. Two years ago, talking to reporters before he boarded Air Force One, Biden referred to the procedure as aborting “ a child ” rather than a fetus, a clue about the point at which he believed life began.

Still, his stance is that he won’t impose his personal views on Americans who believe differently. In 1974, the year he said in an interview that Roe. v. Wade went “too far,” he also voiced opposition to a constitutional amendment to ban abortion, albeit with some ambivalence, a hometown news report at the time shows.

A column in the Morning News of Wilmington in January 1974 said Biden told a group of anti-abortion activists: "I am not sure my stand against such a constitutional amendment is right, nor am I sure the anti-abortionist stand is right, but right now I think I am more right than you are."

Lauren Hitt, a campaign spokesperson, said in a prepared statement: “Joe Biden has opposed abortion bans since the 1970s. As a senator, he voted repeatedly to protect Roe, and as President, he has used his full executive authority to fight back on extreme MAGA attacks on reproductive freedom.”

Biden described the tensions between faith and policy last year at a Maryland fundraising event .

“I happen to be a practicing Catholic,” he said. “I’m not big on abortion. But guess what? Roe v. Wade got it right.”

A look at his record shows that his path has had its share of starts and stops. As a senator in 1982, he voted in a committee meeting in favor of a constitutional amendment that would have given states the power to restrict abortion if they chose, effectively overturning Roe v. Wade.

At the time, Biden said his aim was to push the vote to the Senate floor, where it would finally be resolved. The measure never got that far, and when it came up again the next year, he voted against it.

In 2019, as the Democratic front-runner for the presidential nomination, he reversed his long-held position in favor of the so-called Hyde Amendment banning federal funding for abortions.

That about-face came at head-spinning speed. One day, his campaign said he supported the Hyde Amendment; the next day, amid blowback from fellow Democrats, he dropped that position. He justified the switch by saying he could no longer support the policy because Republicans were restricting access to abortion in poor neighborhoods.

“Joe Biden is an Irish Catholic kid from Scranton,” said John Carr, founder of the Initiative on Catholic Life and Social Thought at Georgetown University. “He seems to stay with Catholic orthodoxy until he thinks the political or other costs are too high.”

Biden recognized early on that his nuanced position — wary of abortion at his core, accepting of abortion rights in the public square — was bound to cause him grief. He told fellow Sen. Abe Ribicoff of Connecticut in 1973 that his stance would most likely please no one, according to his 2007 memoir, “Promises to Keep.”

That proved prescient.

In Biden’s first year as president, conservative Catholic bishops argued that he shouldn’t receive communion given his backing of abortion rights. He met privately with Pope Francis at the Vatican in October of that year, and afterward he said the pope had assured him that communion shouldn’t be withheld.

Kathleen Sebelius, who was health and human services secretary in President Barack Obama’s administration, said in an interview that she sympathized with Biden’s predicament.

“I’m born and raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools for 17 years of my life,” said Sebelius, a former governor of Kansas. “I understand this issue. I’ve been called out by the archbishop. I was ordered not to take communion .

“I’ve been on the personal side of this and the political side of this, and I understand the struggle that those of us who are raised in a faith community and then live in a political world deal with,” she added. “It’s not easy. I think Nancy Pelosi [the former House speaker, who is also Catholic] understands that. I think Joe Biden understands it. It’s not a simple choice.”

Whatever Biden’s journey, most advocates say they now have full confidence that he is a reliable champion of abortion rights. When Biden left the Senate in 2009, he had a 100% rating from what was then called NARAL Pro-Choice America, a group promoting abortion access.

“Biden is not the same man as he used to be when it comes to abortion rights,” said Ilyse Hogue, former president of the organization. “I don’t think he’s been hiding his agenda just to win a second term and then secretly plans to turn around and become this anti-choice guy. I’m not worried about it at all.”

Some still don’t believe Biden goes far enough to promote reproductive rights.

Renee Bracey Sherman, founder and a co-executive director of We Testify, an abortion rights advocacy group, said Biden should use his megaphone to remove the stigma tied to abortion instead of airing his personal doubts. She pointed to recent surveys indicating that 6 in 10 Catholics support abortion rights.

“He’s the president of the United States; he’s not the pope of the United States,” Bracey Sherman said. “I’m sorry, he’s allowed to have his personal feelings. But at the end of the day, he is the president, and he is supposed to defend the Constitution and people in this country who need abortions.”

Bracey Sherman said her organization reached out to the Biden administration multiple times offering to bring Catholics who have had abortions into the White House to share their stories — but has yet to hear back.

“He makes it seem as though he’s the one who’s following the Catholic teachings,” she said. “But what about the rest of the Catholics in America who do support access to abortion and have abortions?”

Elections are a choice. Even Biden detractors say they’re fully aware that the only realistic alternative at this point is Trump, whom they view as an extremist on the issue.

Abortion looks to be one of Trump’s glaring vulnerabilities. He has boasted about his role in overturning Roe v. Wade through his appointment of three conservative Supreme Court justices during his single term.

“There is a fundamental question and a fundamental difference between the president and Donald Trump and their belief on whether the Constitution affords women a right to choose. Donald Trump does not; Joe Biden does,” said Kate Berner, a former Biden White House official.

Trump recently said abortion decisions should be left to the states after he was criticized that he has been murky about what he believes. Even so, he sought to dissociate himself from a recent state court ruling in Arizona upholding a 19th century law imposing a near-total abortion ban.

Disavowing Arizona’s strict anti-abortion measure isn’t so easy for Trump. The reason it can take effect springs directly from the votes of conservative Supreme Court justices whom Trump worked to install.

“The fact is that he announced he was going to stack the court with justices who could be counted on to overrule Roe v. Wade,” said Laurence Tribe, a Harvard Law School professor emeritus. “He succeeded in that. They did it. That led to the revival of laws like Arizona’s, even if Trump says: ‘Oops, I’m sorry that’s the consequence. It doesn’t make me look good politically.’”

Biden was at the White House last Sunday, dealing with the fallout from Iran’s attack on Israel. When he’s in Washington on the weekends, he’ll often attend services at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Georgetown, the church frequented by the nation’s first Catholic president, John F. Kennedy. A Black Lives Matter banner hangs from a fence outside.

Biden wasn’t in the pews that day; he was attending a virtual meeting with U.S. allies about the Iranian attack.

The Rev. Patrick Earl led the Mass and greeted congregants at the doorway afterward. He said in an interview that Biden is a “good presence” during services, recalling how he once left his seat to congratulate a boy’s family celebrating his First Communion.

Earl said he understood Biden’s position, even if it conflicts with church teaching.

“As the political leader of a very varied country, you can’t just say, ‘You’ve got to believe as I believe,'" he said. "You just can’t."

Eminem celebrates 16 years of sobriety with a new recovery chip: 'So proud of you'

best year journey

Eminem is celebrating a milestone in his sobriety journey.

The "Without Me" rapper , 51, shared on Instagram that he has been sober for 16 years. He marked the anniversary without comment, posting a photo of himself holding a recovery chip that reads, "Unity, service and recovery."

Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, has been sober since April 2008. Between 2002 and 2008, he struggled with an addiction to Ambien, Valium and Vicodin, according to Rolling Stone .

On the "Paul Pod: Curtain Call 2" podcast in 2022, the rapper looked back on his near-fatal 2007 drug overdose, a time when he was taking "75 (or) 80 Valium a night," and said he isn't sure how he survived. The year after he got clean, he released his sixth studio album, "Relapse."

On the podcast, Eminem shared he felt "really happy" after the drugs left his system. Making "Relapse," he added, was the first time "that I had had fun recording in a long time," though he had to relearn how to rap.

"It took a long time for my brain to start working again," he said.

Guess who's back? Eminem retracts threat of diss track directed toward Lions OC Ben Johnson

Eminem has commemorated his sobriety milestones on social media over the years. In April 2020, he celebrated that he was 12 years sober, writing , "Clean dozen, in the books!" He added, "I'm not afraid," referencing his song "Not Afraid."

"It was my decision to get clean," Eminem raps on the 2010 track. "I did it for me. Admittedly, I probably did it subliminally for you, so I could come back a brand new me."

Eminem to Vivek Ramaswamy: Stop using my music on the campaign trail

Eminem received many supportive comments on his latest sobriety post, with music manager Paul Rosenberg writing, "Sweet 16. So proud of you." Nathan Mathers, Eminem's brother, also commented that he is the "greatest influence and mentor," while chef Andrew Zimmern posted, "Love it my brother. Stay awesome."

Eminem's most recent studio album, "Music to Be Murdered By," was released in 2020. On "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" in March, Dr. Dre teased that the "Real Slim Shady" singer is working on a new album, "which is coming out this year."

Tiffany Haddish is over the fame, but she’s looking forward to what’s to come in her life.

As she prepares for the May 7 release of her new memoir, “I Curse You with Joy,” which follows her 2017 New York Times bestseller, “The Last Black Unicorn,” the comedienne and actress is opening up about her journey to finding peace amid controversy — which started with her decision to remove alcohol from her diet, according to People magazine .

“This is my challenge to people. Stop drinking for six months, and just see how your life changes,” said Haddish. “You’re going to have your snatched body back, you’re going to see your relationships will be better, and you’ll stop dealing with people you don’t need to be dealing with.”

Tiffany Haddish memoir

“My issue was,” she shared, “I was waking up next to ugly men.”

Police arrested the “Girls Trip” star in Georgia in January 2022 after they found her asleep behind the wheel. She was charged with DUI and improper stopping on a roadway. In November, police found her asleep in her car in the middle of an intersection in Beverly Hills, resulting in another DUI arrest in Los Angeles.

“I’m very sober,” she shared recently, noting that it’s been a key ingredient in her happiness. “I haven’t had a drink since [the November incident]. When I sit back and look at my life, everything that’s crazy that’s happened is because somebody or myself had alcohol in their system.”

The actress revealed that she is also celibate, even though she is dating.

“They went together,” said Haddish on cutting out alcohol and sex simultaneously.

Haddish’s memoir has also pushed her to get transparent about the heartache she’s endured throughout her reproductive health battle, People reported.

The Grammy Award-winning comic learned last year that she has endometriosis, a condition in which the endometrium grows outside the uterus and can cause pelvic pain.

“I’m pretty sure the devil is real,” said Haddish, “because the first day of my period, no matter what, the devil goes into overdrive. I feel like my life gets turned upside down.”

While Haddish has learned to manage her heavy and painful periods, the most severe potential side effect of endometriosis for her has been pregnancy losses. The “Haunted Mansion” star shared that she has suffered eight miscarriages , and even though she’s not entirely sold on getting married for a second time or becoming a mom, there’s a part of her that wants to.

“I’ve got all this love,” Haddish told People, “I should give it to somebody who can grow with it.”

Missy actor reflects on 7-year young sheldon journey as the show nears its series finale.

Raegan Revord looks back on her 7 years playing Missy Cooper in CBS' Young Sheldon as the family comedy prepares to wrap up in less than a month.

  • Raegan Revord pays tribute to her seven-year stint as Missy in Young Sheldon .
  • Missy was the best Cooper in Young Sheldon for the longest time.
  • Despite her appeal, Revord won't be a series regular in Georgie and Mandy's Young Sheldon spinoff, but she can return as a guest.

Raegan Revord looks back on her seven-year stint playing Missy on Young Sheldon , as it nears its finale. Production for Young Sheldon has already wrapped , but it doesn't mean that the tributes have already stopped. After the initial announcement that filming has finished for the show, more cast and crew shared their sentiments about the bittersweet ending of Young Sheldon . Admittedly, The Big Bang Theory prequel could have continued for several more years, but the established continuity forced CBS to conclude it.

Taking it to her official Instagram account, Revord shares a string of images from her time playing Missy in Young Sheldon with a poignant message. Check out the post below:

Revord's photos are a mix of old and more recent snaps from the set of Young Sheldon . In her caption, she emphasizes how much she has grown in the last seven years on the show, and that she will be forever grateful for the experience.

Will Revord Play Missy Again In Young Sheldon’s Sequel Series?

Georgie & mandy's spinoff will continue young sheldon's storytelling..

The actor revealed that she wasn't invited to partake in the Young Sheldon spinoff project, although she didn't share any additional details as to why that's the case.

For the longest time, Missy was Young Sheldon 's best character , even though she was mostly sidelined. That has somehow changed as the show builds up Georgie ahead of his spinoff sequel with Mandy, but it doesn't mean that his sister has lost all of her appeal. It's still there, but the prequel hasn't given her the chance to showcase her positive traits since it has been focused on other storylines. Unfortunately, time is running out for Young Sheldon to fully utilize Missy , considering that the family comedy/drama now only has a handful of episodes left.

Despite Revord's impressive performance as Missy, the writers chose not to bring her back for Georgie and Mandy's spinoff show. The actor revealed that she wasn't invited to partake in the Young Sheldon spinoff project , although she didn't share any additional details as to why that's the case. However, it doesn't seem like anyone else from Young Sheldon 's core cast will be in the new show aside from Georgie and Mandy. Missy and the remaining Coopers may appear as guest stars, but it is unlikely that they become series regulars.

Young Sheldon Season 7 Fixes Its Worsening Sheldon/Meemaw Big Bang Theory Plot Hole

Assuming that Revord's story as Missy ends in Young Sheldon , things are not easy for her from here on out. George's death will have a massive impact on her, especially since she is particularly close to her dad. Hopefully, however, the series can show how much that loss shapes her future in The Big Bang Theory since she becomes the least successful Cooper sibling despite her potential.

Young Sheldon season 7 airs every Thursday, 8 pm ET on CBS.

If you run a streaming service and you want Wall Street analysts and investors to stop caring so much about your subscriber numbers, you have a couple of options.

You can a) nicely ask the analysts to pay less attention to subscriber figures and instead focus on something else, like revenue and profits; or b) just stop reporting your subscriber numbers every quarter.

Netflix, the world’s largest subscription-based streaming service, is going with the second option, starting in the first quarter of 2025.

The Los Gatos, Calif.-based company gained 9.3 million subscribers in the first three months of the year, bringing its total paid membership base to 270 million globally. That’s a bigger gain than analysts were expecting, according to FactSet data. But it’s not what Netflix wants its shareholders to fixate on.

Instead, Netflix would prefer that the market judge its business based on metrics including sales and free cash flow (a measure of profitability), which is a better indicator of the company’s overall health. And if investors want to get an idea of whether Netflix’s shows, movies and app are connecting with viewers, the better statistic to look at is “engagement” (e.g., how much time customers spend with the platform), not subscriber data.

You could look at this as a real spiking-the-football moment for Netflix. According to Wedbush Securities analysts Alicia Reese and Michael Pachter, this signals the arrival of Netflix’s long-awaited pivot “from a high-growth, low-profit business to a slow-growth, high-profit business,” even if that transformation is not yet complete.

“Netflix has managed to establish a virtually insurmountable lead in the streaming wars, and we expect competitors to continue to flail while trying to replicate Netflix’s business model,” Reese and Pachter wrote in a note to clients. Netflix stock has risen nearly 70% in the last year, closing Monday at $554.60 a share. Wedbush’s 12-month target for Netflix’s stock is $725.

The much-discussed change doesn’t mean Netflix’s membership numbers are going into a black box. Greg Peters, the company’s co-chief executive, told analysts last week that the firm would “periodically update when we grow and we hit certain major milestones … It’s just not going to be part of our regular reporting.” The change also isn’t taking place immediately. It’s coming early next year, giving Wall Street time to adjust.

As some commentators have noted , there’s a certain amount of irony afoot here. Netflix has typically been more transparent with data than other streaming services, especially when it comes to disclosing how many people watch their shows. Now Netflix is going backward, at least with subscriber additions, even as it becomes increasingly forthcoming with viewership reports.

But the most interesting thing about Netflix’s transition is how it reflects broader changes in the way the market treats streaming.

When the streaming wars started, legacy media companies were jealous of Netflix’s soaring stock price. The thought was: investors were rewarding Netflix for its subscriber growth; if we show subscriber growth, our stock will go up. Media companies including Disney, (then AT&T-owned) WarnerMedia, Paramount Global and NBCUniversal were willing to lose vast sums of money to fuel growth.

That thinking has changed. Now, profitability is the top priority across the industry, and traditional media organizations have severely cut costs to get their cash flows under control, leaving Netflix to extend its lead.

The problem is, old habits are hard to break. People who cover Netflix, including analysts and journalists, understand that subscriber counts aren’t the same as money. But the sub figures are sexy and easy for general readers to understand, and more data is better than less, right? For example, the shift means Netflix will no longer report average monthly revenue per user on a quarterly basis, which has been a valuable way to compare the health of various services.

On the flip side, Netflix has added annual revenue guidance to its reporting.

There are clear reasons why Netflix might want to avoid being judged by the number of subscribers it draws in and retains every quarter. For one thing, sub counts can suffer from short-term volatility. In other words, they could go down if Netflix raises its prices by a lot, or if, say, a big country suddenly becomes a non-market, as Russia did when it invaded Ukraine. In 2022, when Netflix reported losing subscribers for two straight quarters, it triggered a major sell-off. Not just of Netflix’s stock, but of the whole streaming video sector.

This came to be known as “the great Netflix correction.” Netflix would surely like to avoid repeating that history when its user growth stalls again. In recent quarters, the subscriber numbers have been boosted in part by the company’s efforts to crack down on password sharing, plus its promotion of the ad-supported tier, which reduces cancellations in the wake of the aforementioned price increases.

The effect of converting freeloaders to paying customers will eventually wear off, though Netflix still has room to grow. The company still accounts for less than 10% of U.S. television usage, according to Nielsen. People actually spend more time watching YouTube, which is free.

Netflix’s stock has long been sensitive even to subtle signs of stress. Back in the early days of the company’s push into original content, the shares took a dive seemingly after a negative New York Times review of its “Arrested Development” reboot. The stock remains volatile, and expectations are high. Netflix last week reported results that beat Wall Street data in terms of revenue, profitability and subscriber additions. The shares still fell.

Entertainment companies are always trying to work the refs, especially in the streaming era. Warner Bros. Discovery thinks it doesn’t get enough credit for its progress toward making Max (formerly HBO Max) healthy. Others say that Warner Bros. Discovery’s numbers, which show profitability from its direct-to-consumer segment, are hard to parse because they include traditional HBO. Peacock still seems to get points, at least in the press , for gaining subscribers, despite losing massive amounts of money.

Now Netflix is trying to shift market expectations again. But this time, on its own terms.

If Sony teams up with Apollo Global Management’s $26-billion bid for Paramount Global, it would provide a substantial boost to the private equity giant’s proposed takeover.

Apollo had already expressed interest in purchasing Paramount in a deal that would include the entertainment company’s $14 billion in debt. But Paramount has instead engaged with David Ellison’s Skydance Media , the Santa Monica-based company best known for producing “Top Gun: Maverick.” Ellison has a 30-day exclusivity window to reach a deal for Paramount (the time frame could be extended).

Under Ellison’s proposal, Skydance would acquire Shari Redstone’s National Amusements Inc., the holding company that owns 77% of Paramount’s shares. Paramount would then acquire Skydance for $5 billion in stock, up from the $4 billion valuation estimated during a 2022 funding round led by KKR. Redstone prefers the Ellison option because she can cash out. Many investors are displeased with the Skydance framework because, as they see it, they’d be left with diluted shares in an uncertain enterprise.

Apollo’s bid would be harder to ignore if it brought on Sony, a Japanese electronics and entertainment giant that already owns a U.S. movie and television studio. But a pairing of Sony and Paramount would likely invite regulatory scrutiny, even though the Trump administration approved Walt Disney Co.’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox with minimal friction.
