  • Moscow Airports: A Virtual Guide (Written by a Real-life Guide)

When you arrive in Moscow (which is what you should definitely do at least once in your life, if you’re calling yourself a traveler, no offence) by an airplane, you will most likely find yourself in one of the three major airports: Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, or Vnukovo. They all provide services of the highest quality and are on par with many major airports in Europe and United States. Moscow has always been in the top 3 of the most popular European cities in terms of traveling (whether Moscow was the final destination or just a transitional point), so maintaining the most efficient system of handling millions of people each year is now a good old tradition.

This basically means that there is no real need to pay too much attention to which Moscow airport your airplane will bring you to: you won’t be disappointed in any case. The only possible reason I can think of for you to actually be concerned about this, is if you, for example, have a business appointment somewhere in the center of Moscow, but you do not want to leave your own city for as long as you can (for whatever reason), so you want to arrive, say, half an hour before the meeting, but do not want to be late. In that case yes, it is crucial to you know where the airport is, because it defines how fast you can get to the city.

So let me give you a more detailed review of all three airports of Moscow (maybe some particular aspect of one of them will especially charm you). Since we have touched the subject of timing, let’s start with the one that is the closest to the city, and that’ll be Vnukovo.

Vnukovo:  High In The Sky

New Passenger Terminal A of Vnukovo Airport

Another fact that differentiates Vnukovo and puts it above other Moscow airports is that it is literally located higher: 205 meters above the sea level, which is good, because it means that the planes can take off even when the weather is foggy (fog covers the low grounds, and Vnukovo is basically already in the sky).

Continuing the subject of saving your time when getting to Moscow, Vnukovo has one more advantage for people who come from Europe and, for that matter, for anyone who’s flying from the western world: Vnukovo is built on (you guessed it) the west side of the city, so it helps to save another 10 to 20 minutes.

That will probably be it, I mean reviewing Vnukovo: you don’t really care exactly how many planes or people can be managed there (a lot), or about the airport’s history (nothing special), or how long the landing lines are (they’re pretty long), right? I thought so. So with that, let’s get to the next big thing in this top 3. Let me introduce you, lads and lasses, to another famous airport: Sheremetyevo.

Sheremetyevo:  Looking Ahead Is The Key

New Sheremetyevo’s Terminal D operated by Aeroflot

There are two lines for the planes to take off from (and, naturally, to land on), but they are quite near one another (280 m), so they do not work independently from each other. That, technically, could have been different, because it’s just official rules that do not allow the airport to use them in such a way. Say, in San Francisco there is an airport in which the distance between the lines is 230 meters, and the planes seem to do pretty well, without too much crushing into each other (actually, without any crushing at all). There is a plan to build a third line, for that matter, which should increase the airport’s activity by 60%.

Moscow airport Sheremetyevo is hosting the biggest company of all Russian airlines , “Aeroflot  - Russian Airlines,” and the three major international airline alliances, “Sky Team,” “Star Alliance,” and “Oneworld,” also have chosen Sheremetyevo as a go-to (or, technically, a fly-to) airport when there’s a need for to arrange a landing in Moscow.

I should stop myself again (otherwise this article will drag on forever), and give you a picture of the last (but, as usual, not the least, just the most distant from the city) airport: Domodedovo.

Domodevodo: Another Biggest One

Modern Passenger Terminal of Domodedovo Airport

If you’d walk 22 km from MKAD (or 45 km from the city center) south-east from Moscow, that’s where you’d find Domodedovo. It would be pretty hard to miss. It’s the most technologically advanced one, and it gets better and bigger every year. According to an independent British agency “Skytrax,” Domodedovo is the best airport in Eastern Europe, and the British know airports, so that’s a valuable opinion.

If you’re not yet tired of how everything in this article is the best and the biggest, here’s another rather entertaining bit of information. Remember how I said that Sheremetyevo can handle all kinds of aircrafts, but there’s an exception? Well, here’s why: Domodedovo is the only airport in Russia that can provide landing to the biggest passenger plane in the world, Airbus380 (and that thing is indescribably huge, so that’s saying something).

Well, that’s it, I gave you a brief description of all three major airports in Moscow, mostly for educational and entertainment reasons, so I tried to avoid technical or overly mundane information, but if there was something in this article that you’ve found being practical, that’s great. Finally, click the link if you wish to read another piece of important information on how to meet each other in arrivals area at one of Moscow's airports.

Politics latest: Scottish first minister Yousaf quits after 'biggest political miscalculation of his career'

Humza Yousaf has announced his resignation as SNP leader and Scotland's first minister following the fallout from his decision to end the SNP's powersharing agreement with the Scottish Greens.

  • Analysis: The biggest political miscalculation of Yousaf's career
  • Explained: How did we get here - and what happens next?
  • Tap here to follow Politics At Jack And Sam's
  • Live reporting by Samuel Osborne

Labour has made hay with the chaos surrounding the Tory party in Westminster, and could do the same with the SNP in Scotland, says our deputy political editor Sam Coates .

Given Humza Yousaf's resignation today, after just 13 months in office, Sir Keir Starmer could consider himself "quite a lucky general".

"He watched in many ways the collapse of the Conservative Party, and saw the Tory poll rating crash, and now more problems for the SNP which has such a hold on Scottish politics," said Sam.

"That grip seems to be loosening.

"Many in Labour will be quite happy about what they're seeing."

It's been pointed out many times that a path to power for Labour at the next general election will likely require some form of recovery in Scotland, where the SNP has been dominant since the 2014 independence referendum.

The leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Douglas Ross, has said the outgoing first minister "decided to jump before he was pushed" by announcing his resignation today.

Humza Yousaf "knew his future was on a knife edge" as he faced up to two confidence votes this week, Mr Ross said, adding he had quit "because of the pressure we had put on as the main opposition party".

But there was no sign of Mr Ross and the Scottish Tories looking to offer their backing for a new SNP first minister.

Having seen off Mr Yousaf, Mr Ross said his party was now focused on "seeking to replace this tired, failing, nationalist government who have prioritised independence above everything else".

Holyrood is in a "terrible situation" following the resignation of Scotland's first minister, one of Humza Yousaf's predecessors has said.

Henry McLeish, who was first minister under Labour from 2000 until 2001, said while Mr Yousaf had shown "a bit of grace" and "humility" by quitting today - there was "no way he could continue in office".

He told Sky News his decision to end the SNP's powersharing deal with the Scottish Greens was more evidence of how "politically divided" Scotland had become.

Mr McLeish told Sky News his homeland is in desperate need of some "unity" and called for all parties to start thinking like a "coalition", even if not in practice.

Labour's call for an immediate election at Holyrood is - like their demand for one at Westminster - not likely to go anywhere, he added.

Humza Yousaf has announced he is standing down as Scotland's first minister and SNP leader.

Our Scotland reporter Jenness Mitchell reports on some of the potential contenders who could step up to lead the country:

Former SNP leader John Swinney has said he is giving "very careful consideration" to standing to replace Humza Yousaf after he announced his resignation as first minister of Scotland.

Mr Swinney said: "I've been somewhat overwhelmed by the requests that have been made of me to do that, with many messages from many colleagues across the party.

"So I'm giving that issue very active consideration. And it's likely I'll have more to say about that in the days to come."

He added: "I'm very sorry that the first minister has decided to stand down.

"He's been a pioneer as first minister, the first person of colour to hold the office of first minister of Scotland.

"He's led our country with empathy, with care and with an emphasis always on bringing people together, so I very much regret the fact he's felt it necessary today to stand down."

It is "bizarre" that some SNP MSPs would rather see Humza Yousaf resign as Scotland's first minister than do a deal with the pro-independence Alba Party, Ash Regan has said.

Ms Regan's support may have been needed to get Mr Yousaf over the line in a confidence vote.

The former SNP politician, who leads Alba in Holyrood and is the party's first MSP, said: "The irony will not be lost on many that the event that has cost Humza Yousaf his job was removing the Greens from government - something most people in Scotland agreed with.

"Alba Party were willing to work in the best interests of Scotland to put independence back at the heart of government, protect the rights of women and girls, and to get the government back on to a competent footing.

"The Greens were willing to vote with the Tories and bizarrely some forces in Humza Yousaf's own party would rather see him resign than deal with a party who really want to advance independence."

Humza Yousaf "doesn't have the X factor" and was right to stand down as Scotland's first minister, the former deputy leader of the SNP has said.

Jim Sillars said: "Humza has been what I would describe as a follow-up, not a leader.

"And that came through when he was a candidate for the leadership, when he described himself as the continuity candidate - in other works Nicola Sturgeon Mark II.

"And he was never able to rid himself of the Sturgeon legacy because he actually saw nothing wrong with it, which was actually mess and mediocrity.

"Nice man though he is, Humza never had what was required."

He said he thought former SNP leadership candidate Kate Forbes was the "outstanding candidate" to take over as leader.

Scotland's First Minister Humza Yousaf has resigned in the face of two confidence votes after he dramatically brought the power-sharing deal with the Scottish Greens to an end.

How did we get here?

The Bute House Agreement - signed back in 2021 and named after the first minister's official residence in Edinburgh - brought the Green Party into government for the first time anywhere in the UK.

It gave the SNP a majority at Holyrood when the votes of its MSPs were combined with those of the seven Green members, and also made Green co-leaders Patrick Harvie and Lorna Slater junior ministers.

Without it, the SNP would need to have operated as a minority administration at Holyrood.

What caused the relationship to sour?

There had been mounting tensions between the largest party at Holyrood and their junior partners in government.

The Greens were angered at the SNP-led administration's recent decision to ditch a key climate change target.

That, combined with the decision to pause the prescription of new puberty blockers to under-18s at Scotland's only gender clinic, resulted in the Greens announcing they would have a vote on the future of the power-sharing deal.

What brought things to a head?

Mr Yousaf decided to pull the plug on the agreement - arguing it had "served its purpose" - prompting a major fallout with his former allies, who vowed to back a no-confidence motion in his leadership proposed by Scottish Conservative leader Douglas Ross.

What happens next?

Mr Yousaf said he will continue as first minister until his successor is elected ( see 12.07 post ).

Potential successors include:

  • Kate Forbes, former SNP leadership contender;
  • Stephen Flynn, leader of the SNP in Westminster;
  • Neil Gray, health secretary;
  • Jenny Gilruth, education secretary;
  • Shona Robison, finance secretary;
  • John Swinney, former deputy leader;
  • Mairi McAllan, wellbeing economy, net zero and energy secretary.

Humza Yousaf's decision to sack the Green Party from his coalition ultimately triggered a series of events that sealed his political fate, our Scotland correspondent Connor Gillies reports.

"It was the biggest political miscalculation of his career that sealed the fate of the first minister," he said, speaking after Mr Yousaf announced he will step down ( see 12.04 post ).

Ending the three-year powersharing deal at Holyrood was a "fatal mistake" which saw the "walls come closing in".

Those close to Mr Yousaf had suggested that agreement "had become a liability within government and many in the SNP were uneasy about how many strings they were pulling".

"So he got rid of them and that triggered a set of events in motion that ultimately led to this moment and ultimately led to his demise."

No confidence votes

No confidence motions were looming at the Scottish parliament later this week, and he was facing wipeout and a backlash of "no" votes from the Conservatives, Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party, who were furious.

"And then at that stage there was a suggestion that the ALBA party, Alex Salmond's party, would prop up the SNP government with their one MSP, Ash Regan," Gillies added.

"That was just a step too far. Allies and sources close to Scotland's first minister said, 'look, that would be like doing a deal with the devil'.

"So, there was only one other option and that was to resign."

Stepping in for Sturgeon

Gillies added an "interesting" element to this is how Mr Yousaf said to Sky News just 48 hours ago he would defy that vote of no confidence.

"On a human level, this is a man who is well-liked within the SNP," Gillies said.

"He is a man who stepped up to the plate when Nicola Sturgeon stepped down last year, and he was always going to have a battle ahead."

But even his closest of allies, Gillies said, would realise "he was not Nicola Sturgeon, and he did not command her authority".

Humza Yousaf gave an emotional end to his resignation announcement.

"I bear no ill will and certainly no grudge against anyone. Politics can be a brutal business," he says.

"It takes its toll on your physical and mental health. Your family suffer alongside you."

Becoming emotional, he adds: "I am in absolute debt to my wonderful wife, my beautiful children and my wider family for putting up with me over the years.

"I'm afraid you'll be seeing a lot more of me from now. You are truly everything to me."

Mr Yousaf continues: "I am so grateful. I'm so blessed for having the opportunity afforded to so few to lead my country, and who could ask for a better country to lead than Scotland? Thank you very much."

The dark orange with hints of teal are the most prominent colours in the structure, however, it is the spires that really draw in the eye. Each has its own unique colour scheme and design from jagged blocky shapes to smooth flowing textures. Koen has found inventive ways to represent the swirling patterns of the spires as green minifigure arms are even used in one of the peaks.

Round the back of the display, horned tendrils portray more of the complex designs of the spires. After looking at the building for some time, the structure shares some similarities with gingerbread houses, mainly thanks to the white trim and vibrant colours used in this creation.

The Soviet ZIL-E167 can handle any terrain you throw at it

It’s a little cold in my LEGO room so I turned up the heat and put on a sweater. That leads me to believe that I probably don’t have what it takes to handle the real cold like what they have in Siberia and Urals. There’s a reason there are so many jokes about vodka drinking you in Russia or whatever. Tough terrain means tough people and tough vehicles. Thankfully, SarielLego has what it takes to handle any terrain as evidenced by this remote-controlled ZIL-E167. I’m loving the beefy tires, the orange color, the overall rugged shape, even the little moose decal is rather charming.

Tough and mean and olive green! Hoorah!

The reason the original castle set from 1978 was yellow and not gray is that LEGO didn’t want to encourage kids to build military stuff. All that changed with the abundance of gray in the Star Wars sets. Still they had similar hesitancy with olive green. It took the Pixar Cars line in 2011 to introduce the color and military builders rejoiced. So there, the joke is on you, LEGO! (That was much funnier when I thought of it earlier today.) While this particular shade of green is now available in many sets, it’s still a difficult color to amass in large quantities. That is just one of many reasons why this rough and tumble Soviet Ural-375D by Rolands Kirpis is so impressive. Another reason is each axle and the steering functions are run by Power Functions motors. It took a year to collect all the right parts to build this model but the end result is as mighty as the Ural mountains.

LEGO Soyuz launcher stands 1.25m high and took a year and a half to build

Since it’s first flight in 1966, the Russian Soyuz rocket system has become the world’s most frequently used launch vehicle. With over 1,700 flights in 50 years, this Russian stalwart has hauled cosmonauts, satellites, and cargo aloft, with its relatively simple design creating an enviable reliability record. However, this LEGO version of the latest Fregat version of the Soyuz is anything but simple — Jussi Koskinen has pulled out all the stops to capture every last feature of the spacecraft’s detailing. The scale of the effort involved is impressive — the model took 18 months to put together, and measures over 1.25m.

LEGO Russian Space Rocket

The overall structure of this massive model is excellent, and the shaping and angles on the lower boosters are particularly good. The smaller details are worth a look too — don’t miss the texturing around the base of the boosters, the scaffold-style connection between stages, and the nice integration of the Russian flag into the upper stage’s colour scheme. This formidable model wouldn’t look out of place on display beside the LEGO Ideas Saturn 5 set, and that’s high praise indeed.

Colorfully camoflauged Sukhoi SU-34 Fighter-bomber

I’ve always wondered why we don’t paint our military jets with blue camouflage so they blend in with the blue sky. Well, after a quick Google search, it appears that the Russians thought the same thing, because the wonderful camoflauge pattern on this Sukhoi SU-34 by ModernBrix is indeed accurate to the real-life jet . It’s an excellent choice, because we rarely see this type of camouflage pattern recreated in LEGO.

Sukhoi SU-34 Medium-Range Fighter/Bomber

Camouflage aside, the shaping is outstanding, especially on the cockpit and fuselage. The builder has also managed to fit side-by-side seating for two pilots in the cockpit — an uncommon feature the Sukhoi is known for — which eliminates the need for duplicate instruments required in the front and back of tandem seat fighter jets.

Nine chapels of St. Basil’s Cathedral are a marvelous example of LEGO microscale architecture

Markus Rollbühler is a LEGO product designer based in Billund, Denmark. Despite spending his weekdays working with LEGO pieces, Markus challenges himself to build microscale versions of the world’s most famous cathedrals in his spare time. His very special series of architectural masterpieces featuring Frauenkirche Dresden and Santa Maria della Salute is now joined by a marvelous copy of St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, Russia.

St. Basil's Cathedral, Moscow

St. Basil’s Cathedral is famous for its nine chapels of vibrant colors. Markus did an amazing job recreating each of them in a unique building style using bricks, hoses, slopes, and tiles of over a dozen different colors. However, the most genius trick of the build is nine sonic screwdrivers right from Doctor Who sets used as crosses on top of the chapels.

And, of course, the cathedral is totally worth checking out from all angles — make sure you visit Markus’ photosream for more high-res pictures!

Flying the unfriendly skies

From his Flickr stream, it’s clear that builder arwen qiea is a Cold War military vehicle buff. It’s an impressive portfolio of (mostly Soviet) tanks, missile carriers and navy vessels from the 50s and 60s. But his gigantic airplanes kind of steal the limelight! Here’s his latest one, a model of the Soviet TU-135, an experimental supersonic bomber from that era.

From that angle, the TU-135 seems almost as sleek as a modern Russian fighter jet. But from a higher vantage point you can see why it was nicknamed the “flying wing”.

So that’s a pretty big plane, right? Nope. THIS is a big plane…

…say hello to the Russian Antonov AN-22, probably the largest turboprop ever built. And the big builds don’t stop there. His version of the Lockheed C5a Galaxy (a heavy transport used by the USAF) is so big it literally eats other LEGO models for breakfast!

And here it is, digesting its meal of tanks and other armaments:
