Joe Bonamassa announces Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea X

The Blues Titan teams with Sixthman for the tenth annual cruise

Blues guitarist Joe Bonamassa and Sixthman have announced the milestone tenth voyage of their world-famous blues-rock party at sea, Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea X, sailing March 21-26, 2025 from Miami, FL to Harvest Caye, Belize and Costa Maya, Mexico aboard the opulent Norwegian Gem. To celebrate the cruise’s milestone, the voyage has been extended to include five days and five nights of the ultimate blues-rock experience with and all-star lineup, as well as an additional port excursion, making this landmark edition an even more extraordinary voyage than ever before.

Pre-sale sign-ups are available through March 10th at 11:59 pm ET with the pre-sale bookings ending on March 12th. The public on-sale begins on March 13th at 2 pm ET, exclusively at bluesaliveatsea.com . Three different payment options will be available, with automated monthly billing allowing for a deposit as low as $100 per person through July 21st, while supplies last.

Hosted and curated as always by the Blues Rock Titan himself Joe Bonamassa, Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea X will present five days and five nights of onboard performances and unforgettable collaborations by such blues and blues-rock superstars as Bonamassa (performing two unique shows), Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Larkin Poe, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Samantha Fish, Eric Gales, Joanne Shaw Taylor, Jimmy Vivino, Eddie 9V, Thunderstorm Artis, Taj Farrant, and many more to be announced. In addition, the cruise will feature an array of inimitable activities, including intimate acoustic morning sets, once-in-a-lifetime collaborations, live podcasts, autograph sessions, guest jams, guitar clinics, tastings, M&G’s and much more.

Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea X is dedicated to championing incredible, emerging live talent, a commitment reflected in this year’s lineup, where the current lineup artists collectively have received ten Grammy nominations, three of them from the 2024 award season alone. This recognition, highlighted by Sunday night’s Grammy Awards where Larkin Poe won Best Contemporary Blues Album, underscores the caliber of artists we feature. KTBA’s focus on up-and-coming talent not only enriches the onboard experience for guests to have an unmatched musical journey at sea but also aligns with its mission to support growing artists and provide them with a platform and an audience.

The Norwegian Gem will provide everything needed to make Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea X the most luxurious cruise vacation ever, with fully stocked bars at (virtually) every corner, tasty dining options, the Pool Deck (with multiple hot tubs), the Gem Club Casino, Mandara Spa, Body Waves Fitness Center, Sports Court, and much more.

For the first time in cruise history, Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea will pay visits to not one but two spectacular ports of call, allowing cruisers the chance to explore and enjoy the serene beach on the private island of Harvest Caye, Belize and the local culture and crystal blue waters in Costa Maya, Mexico. Please note: Shore excursions will not be available until four to six weeks prior to sailing. Cruisers will be able to book an excursion upon receipt of their official booking number.

The announcement of Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea X comes on the heels of the 2024 Blues Music Award nominations, where Bonamassa earned nods for both Blues Rock Artist and Blues Rock Album. These nominations cement the triumph of his latest studio album, Blues Deluxe Vol. 2 , which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Blues Chart. Recently, Bonamassa shared his journey in the documentary Guitar Man , now available for a limited time to watch on his store for free. Bonamassa continues to captivate audiences worldwide with his relentless touring and musical innovations. Fans can look forward to more electrifying performances as tickets for his 2024 tour, covering major cities in the U.S. and Europe, including a return to the iconic Royal Albert Hall, are now available.

Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea X will once again benefit the Keeping the Blues Alive Foundation (KTBA), dedicated to providing students and teachers and musicians the resources and tools needed to further music education. Founded by Bonamassa in 2011, KTBA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to fuel the passion for music by funding programs and scholarships for students and teachers who possess the desire, but lack the resources or access to achieve their potential within music education. With total donations approaching $2M from fundraisers, merchandise sales, and more, KTBA has impacted the lives of over 90,000 students in all 50 states via weekly donations to music programs in schools across the US, as well as funding other merit-based scholarships and extracurricular initiatives nationwide. In 2020, KTBA took its mission a step further by forming the Fueling Musicians Program, an emergency relief plan for touring musicians affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Fueling Musicians Program is now a permanent part of the organization, providing financial assistance for essential living expenses to help struggling musicians on their feet and on the road.

bonamassa blues cruise

From Feb. 25-March 1, making its way from Tampa to Grand Cayman, the Norwegian Pearl set sail on a mission: to prove that blues music is alive and well. In its fifth year, once again, blues-rock superstar and two-time GRAMMY-nominated virtuoso, Joe Bonamassa, teamed up with Sixthman (the premier floating festival curators) to bring together blues fans and artists from all over the world for an unforgettable experience.

This year’s adventure on the high seas, which Bonamassa noted as, “the best one so far,” highlighted some of the greatest acts in the genre and allowed fans to get acquainted with several of its rising stars. For four nights, blues cruisers had the opportunity to navigate their way around six stages, take part in Autograph Sessions, catch intimate performances with special guest stars, and, if their timing was right, run into one of their favorite artists just walking around the ship.

bonamassa blues cruise

The lineup featured an array of outstanding blues musicians, most of whom played on more than one occasion. While Wednesday was reserved for the stop in Grand Cayman, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, were jam-packed with shows. The bill boasted artists such as King Solomon Hicks, Eric Gales, Luke Winslow-King, Black River Delta, Larkin Poe, Samantha Fish, Ruthie Foster, the Devon Allman Project with Duane Betts, Walter Trout, Reese Wynans, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and, of course, Joe Bonamassa.

On board, custom cocktails (like the Woke up Dreaming Daiquiri) were readily available, and each night, guests were left with gifts galore; compliments of Bonamassa and Sixthman. There were special events such as Paul Shaffer’s Super Session (a performance which included Shaffer, Bonamassa, Shepherd, Trout, and more), Acoustic Mornings and Sunset Sessions, wine and craft beer tastings, as well as raffle prizes which consisted of two autographed guitars.

Every day, from the casino to the buffet, cruisers would mingle their way across the ship, seeking out their own curated adventure. Each performance you would stumble into seemed to be more incredible than the next. There were so many magical moments at sea that it was hard to anchor down our favorites, but we gave it our best shot.

Here’s our pick for the top 6 moments from Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea V.

6. Ruthie Foster’s Campfire Stories

bonamassa blues cruise

Ruthie Foster welcomed Larkin Poe, Luke Winslow-King, and Samantha Fish to the Stardust stage for an intimate performance

On Wednesday evening, three-time GRAMMY-nominated powerhouse, Ruthie Foster, welcomed a few collaborators to the Stardust stage, for an intimate performance that was so moving, you could actually feel yourself getting lost in every song. Foster combines blues, folk, soul, rock, and gospel. Matching her style with fellow musicians Larkin Poe, Samantha Fish, and Luke Winslow-King, made for one of the most emotional shows that took place throughout the entire duration of the festival. Each artist sat around the “campfire,” instrument in-hand, telling stories, sharing in some casual conversation, and taking turns leading with their own tracks. Songs included were Larkin Poe’s “Bleach Blonde Bottle Blues,” Samantha Fish’s “American Dream,” Luke Winslow-King’s “The Winds of Aragón,” and Ruthie Foster’s “Mama Said.” With every number, Larkin Poe, Winslow-King, Fish, and Foster beautifully complemented each other’s style, turning each rendition into a breathtaking work of art.

5. The Devon Allman Project and Duane Betts perform “Midnight Rider”

bonamassa blues cruise

Devon Allman and Duane Betts perform "Midnight Rider" onstage at the Spinnaker

As one of the greatest songs by The Allman Brothers Band, “Midnight Rider” has become the gold standard of classic, blues-inspired rock music. Watching Devon Allman (son of Gregg Allman) take the stage alongside Duane Betts (son of Dickey Betts) to perform it, naturally, conjures up a wave of emotions for fans. The Devon Allman Project with Duane Betts performed many times throughout the cruise, but on the final night, guests were treated to the most intimate of shows, held at the Spinnaker. The small lounge was a dream setting to see these artists take the stage. Samantha Fish also joined the band, lending her savvy guitar skills and sultry vocals to “Midnight Rider,” putting a modern twist on the timeless tune. This occasion marked the final run for The Devon Allman Project, as the group now transitions into The Allman Betts Band. Their new album, Down To The River, is due out in the spring, and their world tour kicks off at the end of March.

4. Walter Trout

bonamassa blues cruise

Walter Trout performs onstage with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Paul Shaffer, and Joe Bonamassa

Thursday afternoon, when Walter Trout stepped on stage, the entire Pool Deck went wild. The guitar master and his band took command, like a force of energy that swept in like a breeze from the ocean waters. In his five decades as a performer, Trout’s chill-inducing vocals and skillful string artistry have made him a legend among legends. To put things in perspective, playing with greats such as John Lee Hooker and John Mayall is only a fraction of what Trout has accomplished as a world-renowned musician. Since 2015 alone, he has put out two award-winning albums, and his recent release of Survivor Blues gives fans yet another reason to be excited. The record is an ode to Trout’s deep love of the blues. While his final set on the ship was electrifying, the musician also opened up about his personal health battles. Just as the yin and yang of blues music, Trout’s set poetically touched on both hardship and success, making it one of the festival’s greatest highlights.

3. Kenny Wayne Shepherd

bonamassa blues cruise

Kenny Wayne Shepherd shreds on the Pool Deck stage

As Joe Bonamassa stated during his opening night set, “The first time I saw Kenny, I said, ‘Oh sh*t. I’m fu*ked.’” Of course, the crowd roared as Bonamassa sang Shepherd’s praises and then cheered as he reflected on how wonderful it was to have had everyone come together on this cruise to celebrate their love of music. Each time Shepherd took the Pool Deck stage was exhilarating, but, closing things out on Thursday night the way that he did, illuminated the musician as the dreamy guitar God that he is. The five-time GRAMMY Award nominee dominated the entire cruise ship with his sheer talent and spellbinding charisma. With windblown hair and electric guitar in-hand, Shepherd shredded onstage, shining brighter than any star in the open sky that night. His set list at sea included “Voodoo Child,” and “Come On (Let the Good Times Roll),” making his time on stage feel like the ultimate Hendrix experience.

2. Reese Wynans and Friends All-Star Jam

bonamassa blues cruise

Reese Wynans performs with Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Chris Layton, Noah Hunt and Steve Mackey at the Stardust Theater

On March 1, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and world-renowned Nashville-based keyboardist, Reese Wynans dropped his debut solo album, Sweet Release, via Bonamassa’s label (J&R Adventures). Produced by Bonamassa, Wynans’ album is a reflection of his 50-year career; a career that consists of countless collaborations with legendary artists. Guest appearances on the album include Bonamassa, Vince Gill, Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave), Jack Pearson (Allman Brothers), Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Keb' Mo,' Warren Haynes, Jimmy Hall (Wet Willie), along with Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon of Double Trouble, among others. On Thursday, Feb. 28, the Stardust Theater saw two back to back shows with exclusive performances of select songs, in celebration of the monumental occasion. The album launch spotlighted Wynans and featured performances by friends including Bonamassa, Shepherd, Sinead Burgess, Jimmy Hall, Noah Hunt, Paulie Cerra, Josh Smith, and more. Blues cruisers were lucky enough to receive the CD while on board, just ahead of its release.

1. Joe Bonamassa’s Mind-Blowing Rendition of “Woke Up Dreaming”

bonamassa blues cruise

Joe Bonamassa performing “Woke Up Dreaming” on Wednesday night at the Pool Deck

You can trace Bonamassa’s incredible music career back to the age of 12 when he first opened for B.B. King. Now in his 40s, the native Upstate New Yorker has come to be known as one of the greatest live performers in existence, having shared the stage with icons such as Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills, and Buddy Guy. This past September, he released his 13th studio album, Redemption, once again, receiving widespread critical acclaim. Part of Bonamassa’s beauty rests in his ability to conjure up different sounds in the studio which rival his live concerts; somehow, both are equally as stunning. During the cruise, Bonamassa made a handful of guest appearances but saved his headlining shows for Monday’s opening night on the Pool Deck, and once again on Wednesday night. Joining him on stage was Reese Wynans (keyboard), Anton Fig (drums), Michael Rhodes (bass guitar), Lee Thornburg (trumpet), Paulie Cerra (sax), along with backup vocalists Juanita Tippins and Bonamassa’s girlfriend, Sinead Burgess.

Bonamassa got the party started on Monday night, but saved Wednesday for a set he dubbed, “The Brits and the hits.” Switching things up gave the guitar paragon a chance to perform some longtime fan favorites, such as “Woke Up Dreaming.” Released in 2003, off of Blues Deluxe, that song is a staple for Bonamassa fans. As a track that seems to evolve with every live performance, it's the one we all hope to hear during a Bonamassa show. This acoustic rendition was everything blues cruisers could have wished for. Incredible shredding, scorching vocals, and a fiery performance made this number a dream that no one wanted to wake up from.

bonamassa blues cruise

While on stage, Bonamassa also announced plans for the sixth installment of Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea. The Norwegian Pearl will head from Miami to Nassau, Bahamas, from Feb. 18-22, 2020. Already scheduled to appear are Buddy Guy, Tab Benoit, Tommy Emmanuel, and Mike Zito. The annual music festival cruise has sold out every year since its inception, so you’re going to want to grab tickets fast. Additionally, a Mediterranean voyage has been added from Aug. 16-21, 2019, sailing through Barcelona, Monte Carlo, and Valletta. The cruise will feature a special performance by Peter Frampton, among others.

Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea: Mediterranean (Part One) – Joe Bonamassa’s Blues Cruise Included Visit to Nerdville

Kevin Wierzbicki

The second sailing of Joe Bonamassa’s Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea: Mediterranean sailed out of Athens, Greece on August 23, 2022, and before the Norwegian Cruise Line ship Jade returned to the Greek capital five days later cruisers had a chance to see two full shows from Bonamassa as well as multiple performances from other stars like Keb’ Mo’, Walter Trout, Tommy Emmanuel, Samantha Fish, Marc Broussard and Ana Popović. The Jade called at Mykonos, Greece and Kuşadası, Turkey along the way and also made a “stop” at Nerdville.

Some 25 acts entertained fans throughout the cruise, with early morning acoustic shows, full concerts throughout the day and late night jam sessions. And while fans raved about shows from former Van Morrison side man James Hunter and the reggae-fied blues rock of Jackie Venson, there was never any doubt as to who fans adored the most. And there were plenty of chances to enjoy the work of Joe Bonamassa during the cruise, beginning with an evening concert on the Jade ’s pool deck on sail away day.

bonamassa blues cruise

Bonamassa began his set with “Dust Bowl,” a cut with eerie overtones, before moving into “Evil Mama,” a ‘70s-inspired blues rocker with a funky beat. The song also featured the first of many guitar solos from Joe – a jaw-dropping display that Bonamassa made seem effortless. “I Didn’t Think She Would Do It,” “Notches,” “Just ’Cos You Can Don’t Mean You Should,” “Curtain Call,” and “The Heart That Never Waits” filled out the middle of the show as did a haunting cover of Gary Moore’s “Midnight Blues;” Bonamassa has acknowledged the late Irish firebrand as an influence on his style. As he often does, Bonamassa wrapped up his set with “The Ballad of John Henry.”

Joe’s two concerts during the cruise were only part of how fans could immerse themselves in all-things Bonamassa, who appeared as a guest player at many of the other shows, including sitting in for a song with Jade MacRae, a longtime vocalist in his band. The ship’s television system featured a Joe Bonamassa channel that aired mostly live material 24/7 (another channel featured all the other acts) and for those who wanted Joe to, uh, keep them warm at night, blankets featuring Joe’s likeness could be purchased in the merch area. Perhaps the most unique available experience was the chance for fans to witness a taping of Joe’s podcast Live from Nerdville .

For the episode of Live from Nerdville that was taped in the Jade ’s Stardust Theater, Joe interviewed Tommy Emmanuel, Marc Broussard and Terry Reid. All three conversations began with a recounting of how the two first met. Marveling at how joyous Emmanuel seems to always be on stage, Joe asked Tommy about his passion and Emmanuel responded that meeting people, hearing other people play and jamming was a big part of it; Bonamassa noted for example a 2 ½ hour impromptu off-stage jam between Emmanuel and Keb’ Mo’ that he had witnessed the day before the taping. When Bonamassa commented that the Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea cruises are one of the only places where artists can enjoy that kind of musical camaraderie, Emmanuel jokingly asked “Are you trying to get me to sign up for next year?”

bonamassa blues cruise

When Broussard came on, Bonamassa posed the question to the Louisiana-born artist, “What is it about the south that creates a sound that no other region in the US or anywhere in the world creates?” Before Marc could answer Joe poked a little fun at his own homeland saying, “There’s no one walking around going, ‘Man, I just can’t get enough of that Upstate New York soul.’” The question is almost impossible to answer and Broussard responded with humor, “I really don’t know. It probably has to do with slight in-breeding and a heavy dose of spice.”

Terry Reid was by far the most-animated of the “Live from Nerdville” guests and he reveled in telling stories. Reid goes back a long way and he had Bonamassa and the audience in stitches as he related a tour where he was the opening act for the Rolling Stones in the 1960s. The Stones were experiencing Beatlemania-like pandemonium at the time and it extended to the opening act, with Reid noting that the crowd’s screaming was so intense that it drowned out the music. No music was played during the taping but it will be edited in for the podcast’s airing, scheduled for later this year.

The next sailing of the Keeping the Blues Alive at Sea Mediterranean will be August 17-22, 2023 and once again sail from Athens with calls at Santorini, Greece and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Blackberry Smoke, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram, Jimmy Vivino and Kirk Fletcher will be among those joining Bonamassa.
