Missouri's Warm Springs Ranch is the Home of the Budweiser Clydesdales

The world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales have become synonymous with Super Bowl commercials for the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company. But the history of these horses and the St. Louis, Missouri brewing company dates back to the prohibition.

In celebration of the repeal of prohibition in 1933, Clydesdale  horses pulled a beer wagon carrying one of the first cases of post-prohibition beer down the streets in St. Louis. August Anheuser Busch recognized the potential in using the horses for marketing purposes and used the Clydesdales to deliver beer via beer wagon on a tour around the country.

The Clydesdales have made appearances in Super Bowl commercials for Budweiser beer nearly every year since 1986. The official home of the Budweiser Clydesdales is a brick and stained-glass stable on the 100-acre Anheuser-Busch Brewery complex in St. Louis. But the horses are bred on Warm Springs Ranch , a 300-acre property in Boonville, Missouri, near Columbia, and 110 miles from Kansas City.

The breeding farm includes a foaling barn, veterinary lab and 10 pastures. The farm houses around 70 horses, from foals, to mares, to Clydesdale stallions. The best part? You can actually visit the farm.

With reservations, you can take a must-see VIP tour through the 25,000-square-foot breeding facility where you can learn all about the Budweiser Clydesdales. Guided Walking Tours will let you interact with the Clydesdales, take photos, sample free beer and visit the gift shop for fun Clydesdale gifts. These tours will cost you $15/person.

For a more private VIP experience, you'll get a behind-the-scenes look by interacting with a Clydesdale handler while you visit the foaling area. A custom-built vehicle will take you around the property. These private tours will cost $500 and accommodate up to 16 guests. Both tours will show you the Clydesdale harnesses and explain the amount of skill that goes into being a Budweiser Clydesdale Hitch Driver. The ranch also boasts an exciting holiday lights display in the winter, which was made into a drive-thru experience in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Visit the Warm Springs Ranch website to learn more about how to book your tour right in the heart of Missouri. This trip is an absolute must for any Budweiser (and Clydesdale) fans.

Spring break idea: Visit Warm Springs Ranch in Boonville to see baby Budweiser Clydesdales

In early February, the official breeding facility of the Budweiser Clydesdales announced that four colts (male horses) had been born, so we recommend going early in the spring while the babies are still, well, babies.

Budweiser Clydesdales outside Warm Springs Ranch

You’ve seen them pulling the beer wagon around the field at Busch Stadium on Opening Day and you’ve seen their home at Grant’s Farm, but have you ever seen a Budweiser Clydesdale when it’s still a (relatively) tiny baby? Make it a priority this year. If you’re looking for a fun spring break activity, consider a day trip to Warm Springs Ranch ( 25270 Highway 98, Boonville ), the official breeding and training facility of the Budweiser Clydesdales, just outside of Columbia. There, on the picturesque property, you’ll get to peep the babies, and you’ll get to experience the big guys like you never have before—frolicking in the ranch’s pastures, a thrill for children and adults alike. Kids will also love learning about the care and feeding of the horses and the photo op, and parents can enjoy a complimentary beer. Witnessing the commitment it takes—Warm Springs Ranch employees must be on hand day or night to deliver new foals—to continue the legacy of the Budweiser Clydesdales will leave you with a new appreciation for the animals and their handlers.

Guided tours of Warm Springs Ranch start back up March 25, just in time for spring break. Make sure to book a reservation in advance  online.

What's the connection between Anheuser-Busch and the Clydesdale?

Clydesdales are a breed of draft horse (meaning they can pull heavy loads) that originated in Scotland near the River Clyde, hence the name. Clydesdales are measured in “hands,” and each horse measures an average of 17–18 hands—or about 6 feet—tall and weighs about 2,000 pounds. Clydesdales eat a whopping 20 quarts of grain and 50 pounds of hay and drink 35 gallons of water daily.

The Clydesdales became a symbol of Budweiser in 1933, when August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III gave their father, August A. Busch, Sr., six of the horses to celebrate the end of Prohibition. The St. Louis beer family sent a second group of Clydesdales to New York to mark the occasion, and the large horses drew such a crowd as they made their way to the Empire State Building that the Busches realized the marketing power of the equines. Soon they began sending hitches to other states.

Budweiser Clydesdale prospects have to complete years of training to be eligible to join the prestigious traveling teams, called hitches. Only male horses that meet certain criteria—their blaze, coat, tail, mane, and stocking colors have to be just right—can join a hitch.

In 1950, the Dalmatian was introduced as the Clydesdales’ mascot, to mark the opening of the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery. The horses first appeared in the Super Bowl in 1975 and have been staples of sometimes-tear-jerking Budweiser commercials aired during the games.

What is Warm Springs Ranch and what is a tour like?

Located in Boonville, about a two-hour drive from St. Louis, Warm Springs Ranch is a 300-acre ranch and the official breeding and training facility for the Budweiser Clydesdales. More than 70 Clydesdales live on the property, and each spring, the farm welcomes new foals to the herd.

There are three different tours at Warm Springs Ranch: the Guided Walking Tour, the Clydesdale VIP Tour, and the Wheels & Reins Excursion. The Guided Walking Tour starts at $15 per person, and your time at Warm Springs starts with a complimentary beer and a photo op with one of the Clydesdales. From there, you’ll see the mare/stallion barn, the foaling barn, the vet lab, the shoeing area, the antique beer wagon, the massive trailer the horses use to travel the country in style, and one of the pastures where the Clydesdales spend time in the sunshine. The highlight is definitely seeing the new baby horses with their mothers. You might even catch one or two nursing or napping. Note that this tour largely takes place under shelter. If you choose to go later in the summer, it’s a nice shield from the sun, and fans keep the barns pretty cool, too.

From there, the cost of tours ramps up considerably, but if you're a Clydesdale nut, you might want to drop $500 for the VIP Tour for you and up to 15 of your friends. You’ll ride around on a trailer to tour the pastures, interacting with the Clydesdales along the way. The tour also includes a look at the foaling barn, a meet-and-greet with a Clydesdale handler, and a visit with a baby Clydesdale.

Equine fanatics can spend $1,000 on the Wheels & Reins Excursion, during which you’ll help groom and harness the horses and hitch them to a training vehicle. You’ll then ride through part of the ranch and then guide the horses back to the barn.

When is the best time to visit?

In early February, Warm Springs Ranch announced that four colts (male horses) had been born, so we recommend going early in the spring while the babies are still, well, babies. When we visited in late June, however, they were still adorable and considerably smaller than the adults. At birth, baby Clydesdales weigh an average of 150 pounds, measure about 3 feet tall, and start walking just hours after being born.

Visiting Warm Springs Ranch – Home of the Budweiser Clydesdales

  • April 7, 2014
  • St. Louis/Missouri Living

Share This:

The St. Louis area is rich with historical landmarks and attractions. It is also well-known for for the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales. During most major events in St. Louis, the Cydesdales are sure to make an impressive appearance. When I was invited to visit the largest Budweiser Clydesdale breeding facility with my family a couple weeks ago, I couldn’t pass it up.

If you are familiar with Super Bowl commercials, you know that Budweiser often has memorable commercials featuring their Clydesdales. The last two years, two popular heartfelt Super Bowl commercials have a connection to Warm Springs Ranch. This year’s commercial, “Puppy Love” was inspired by real-life interactions that handlers witnessed at the ranch between the Budweiser Clydesdales and Golden Labrador puppies. In 2013, the commercial “Brotherhood” was partially filmed at Warm Springs Ranch and the star Hope, currently calls the ranch home. This seems to cause a surge in the growing popularity of the farm.

Last year, we visited Grant’s Farm  where many of the Clydesdales are raised. However, it was extremely busy on opening weekend and we didn’t have the chance to check out the stables. The boys really wanted to see the horses, so when they found out about our trip to Warm Springs Ranch, they were elated. The state-of-the-art breeding farm is about 2 hours west of St. Louis in Boonsville, MO. It allowed us to have a nice day trip to a new destination, but not too far away.

After driving through the gates into the ranch, we were greeted by a pair of Clydesdales. On both sides of the road, there are large open areas for them to exercise and roam. The whole view is quite breath-taking and tranquil, as the ranch is tucked away with over 300 acres of land.

A 15-foot, 1,600 pound ‘W’ is easily seen from the street. This new feature was just added last month. The ‘W’ was previously part of the historic  ‘Budweiser’ neon sigh that was on the top of the St. Louis Anheuser-Busch brewery. It holds lots of meaning and adds a great look to the scenery.

As we continued to drive back, the gorgeous red barn sits peacefully at the end of the road. The 25,000-square-foot breeding barn contains a veterinary lab and 10 pastures, each with a customized, walk-in shelter and free-flowing water dispensers. Everything about the barn and area is amazingly well-kept and clean. Everyone we encountered on our visit was exceptionally kind and professional.

To start the tour, we sat in a tractor-pulled custom-wagon and took us to a pasture to get an up-close look at the Clydesdales while learning about them and the facility. The friendly breed of horses are very laid back and a few walked right up to the wagon giving us a chance to pet them. That experience alone was really exciting and rewarding for my little ones.

While touring the inside of the barn, we learned everything from how they are bred to the different stages of life. It is very informative, as well as entertaining for the little ones. Warm Springs Ranch is currently home to approximately 70 Clydesdales, including 15 foals. The ranch expects 13 more, for a total of 28 new foals this year.

We got to see the above little newborn that was only 3 days old. It is hard to believe how big they are at birth.  Their hair is clipped on the day they are born because they have trouble regulating their body temperature.

The tour also included a look into the luxury tractor-trailers that transport the traveling Clydesdales. While outside, we could easily look around to see many Clydesdales roaming in the pastures. At the end of the tour, we got the the opportunity to pet and take our own pictures with a Clydesdale. At this time, adults over 21 can also sample an ice cold Budweiser beer.

Tours are offered at 10am & 2pm every day except Wednesday (through Nov 2nd) and lasts about an hour and a half. It costs $10 per person and is well worth it for the unique up-close experience with such an iconic breed. They also offer VIP Tours once a day for a private excursion on the ranch. Those costs $500 and can accommodate up to 16 guests. Any tour requires a reservation and days are already filling up for the summer.

I was not financially compensated for this post. I did tour the ranch at no charge. All opinions expressed are 100% my own and I wanted to share our amazing experience.

budweiser barn tours

They’re the most famous horses in America. The Budweiser Clydesdales symbolize the end of prohibition and The King of Beers. Most of us will only experience their majesty on television, maybe a quick glimpse during the Tournament of Roses Parade or in a Super Bowl commercial.

But in the heart of Missouri, there’s a place where you’ll not only see these beauties, but interact with them! It’s called Warm Springs Ranch . Located near Boonville, Missouri, nearly equidistant from Kansas City and St. Louis, this is where the Budweiser Clydesdales are born and raised to become part of the world-famous hitch, and that alone should be reason enough to get you to visit. Still not convinced? Here are a few more.

Rolling green hills at Warm Springs Ranch.

1. Stunning Location

Rolling green hills, large Budweiser-red barns, and a gated drive are the first sights you’ll see as you approach Warm Springs Ranch. The winding fence-lined drive takes you past the beautiful pastures where the Clydesdales graze. The ranch encompasses 340 acres, which means you may only see a few horses when you first drive in while many others could be tucked behind the hills.

Along the drive, you’ll see three giant metal letters, WSR , brought here when the Budweiser sign atop Anheuser-Busch Brewery in St. Louis was replaced. As you pull up to the barns, you realize this is a special place. The entrance is perfectly landscaped and the Clydesdales’ caretakers are there to welcome you.

2. Majestic Horses

Meeting your favorite television star can sometimes disappoint, but not here. Somewhere between 80 and 100 Clydesdales of all ages call Warm Springs Ranch home. Stallions Theo and Rock On are usually the first to greet visitors just to the right of the barns. They are the perfect examples of what makes a Clydesdale a Budweiser Clydesdale: bay color, black manes and tails, four white stocking feet, and white blazes down their faces. They’re at least six feet tall and weigh about 2,000 pounds.

The horses on the farm are a bit more natural-looking than those you’ll see in parades. They can be found enjoying themselves sans their 135-pound harnesses and the red and white ribbons braided through their manes. Most are also missing their shoes (even though there are six different sizes to choose from at the ranch).

3. Getting To See The Beautiful Foals

A highlight for any visitor is meeting the newly born foals and their mothers. A simple stroll through the pens in the barn is worth the drive and admission alone. Nowhere else can you experience this. The foals may look small next to the mares, but with a birth weight of around 150 pounds and a height measuring three feet, they come into this world living up to their grand reputations.

The foals are born starting in March and they keep their caretakers busy through mid-June, but there are always a few late-season babies for visitors to see if you choose to head to Warm Springs Ranch closer to fall. If you’ve ever wondered how a Clydesdale is named, the staff tells us it’s tradition to use the first letter of the mare’s first name when deciding what to call the newborn.

A handler cleaning a Clydesdale.

4. The Staff Is Truly Dedicated

Even with 340 acres and 80 to 100 Clydesdales to care for, the staff is relatively small. Six tour guides and seven handlers make up the group of dedicated workers at Warm Springs Ranch. Their phones ring when each foal is born and from that moment on, the workers treat them like royalty. Feeding, bathing, and cleaning everything from their harnesses to their stalls, these dedicated employees know the ins and outs of superior Clydesdale care. Warm Springs Ranch will make you question your housekeeping skills. The facility is cleaner than most people’s homes.

The crew doesn’t simply let the horses out to pasture to graze for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They make sure they have the best hay from Idaho and work with Purina to procure the perfect grain. Food and drink for the Clydesdales also involves at least 30 gallons of water per horse per day. The crew helps keep the pastures neatly trimmed and bales the grass that grows there, sending it to St. Louis to feed the goats and other animals at their sister property, Grant’s Farm .

5. You Can Have A VIP Experience

You have two options when you visit Warm Springs Ranch, a Guided Walking Tour and a VIP Tour. Both require a reservation. The TravelAwaits team recently experienced the VIP Tour and our team was in love from the moment we stepped onto our private wagon.

The VIP Tour costs $500 for up to 16 people and takes you through the pastures to experience the horses up close. We just didn’t know how close. These beautiful animals walked right up to the wagon, some sticking their heads inside for a very personal meeting. No petting zoo has prepared you for this experience. These horses are so savvy, a few even found a purse or two to root through. Note that VIP guests travel through the pastures in a wagon pulled by a John Deere tractor, so the ride can be a bit bumpy if you have any neck or back issues.

The entire trip lasts 90 minutes and completely immerses you in the history of the breed, the ranch, how the horses are trained, and what it’s like for them on the road. You’ll have a newfound respect for the handlers who travel with the hitch across the country. It takes more than five hours to get the hitch ready for the scores of appearances they make each year and when the Clydesdales are ready to delight their fans, their drivers have to manage 70 pounds of pressure at their fingertips. This is just one good reason two drivers sit atop the beer wagon at all times.

Tours take place from early spring through mid-fall and are available every day except Wednesdays.

A free Budweiser sample at Warm Springs Ranch.

Bonus: Free Beer

After you’ve roamed the pastures and strolled through the barns, it’s difficult to think of a better ending than a nice cold one. The beer is complimentary at the end of each tour and simply tastes better when you’re enjoying it just feet from where the iconic horses, which symbolize it, live. While enjoying your samples, you’ll have one last chance to interact with one of these beautiful animals, petting and taking photos with a fully grown Clydesdale in front of the traditional beer wagon to capture one last memory.

Holidays with the Clydesdales returns at Warm Springs Ranch: 'There's something special'

budweiser barn tours

BOONVILLE — Holidays with the Clydesdales kicks off at Warm Springs Ranch on Friday, with an opportunity to get up close and personal with the Budweiser Clydesdales after the annual tradition was relegated to a drive-thru experience last year.

The 300-acre breeding farm, which has about 60 horses ranging in age from a couple of months old to about 16 years old, will return to holding the event in-person this year.

Even with less proximity to the 2,000-pound horses last year due to COVID-19, there remained a steady flow of visitors who drove through the ranch to see its Christmas light display and the world-famous Clydesdales. But the build-up is palpable amid final preparations for the mid-Missouri holiday staple to feel normal once again.

"I think people were just happy to get out of the house," herd supervisor Amy Trout said. "But this year will blow last year's event out of the water."

Trout grew up around horses in Virginia before following her passion to Missouri. She worked at Grant's Farm for 19 years, helping manage the training of the horses there.

She only recently started her career at the ranch, making the move in October.

"There's something really special about this place," Trout said. "I love that I can see the stars at night and get the hands-on experience with the Clydesdales again."

"I am really excited to take it all in," she said of the holiday tradition.

The reservation-only experience will be available Thursday through Sunday from Nov. 26 to Dec. 19, and every day Dec. 20-23 and Dec. 26-30.

Built in 2008, the ranch features the main barn, a veterinary lab and 10 pastures.

What to know when visiting Warm Springs Ranch

Visitors can take part in a tour of the 25,000-square-foot breeding facility, which will be decorated for the holidays and have 24 horses in the stalls and on display each night, Trout said.

A tree made of about 2,000 Budweiser beer bottles will welcome guests into the barn.

Guests can walk through the barn at their own leisure for several photo opportunities, one of which includes a red wagon with a Clydesdale standing nearby.

Stan, the ranch's self-proclaimed star, will be in the barn every night, Trout said.

The 8-year-old Clydesdale was born the same week as the passing of Stan Musial, the St. Louis Cardinals great. The horse was named in Musial's memory.

Other than Stan and a few regulars, the Clydesdales will be on a rotation each night.

During a full year, the ranch sees about 50,000 guests, with the holiday capacity of about 1,500 guests per night, Trout said.

As last-minute touches are being made, much of the work needs to be done by Monday for a light-up ceremony Monday night involving staff from Grant's Farm in St. Louis, where the Anheuser-Busch headquarters are located.

Staff from Grant's Farm will "give their blessing" when things are just right.

Holidays with the Clydesdales tickets, special one-on-one event

Tickets are $20 per person, $10 for children ages 3-12 and free for children 2 and under. They can be purchased on the ranch's website.

Two time slots are available: 5 to 6:30 p.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. each day of operations.

Each slot has room for about 750 guests.

For a more intimate experience, guests can reserve a "Wonderstall" for up to 10 guests for $1,100. Visitors who reserve the space will receive one-on-one time with a Clydesdale, a meal, Anheuser-Busch products, hot chocolate, apple cider, VIP parking and a reserved stall for the group to congregate.

Barbecue will be available for all guests visiting the ranch, and there will be a bar area where guests can enjoy Budweiser beer and wine.

Trout said one feature of the Christmas lights display will be a light-up eight-horse hitch.

"It's great seeing the excitement of families," said Shani Shipp, a staff member at the ranch. "I've gotten to see families turn the ranch into a yearly holiday tradition."

Shipp has worked at the ranch for about nine years. During the holidays, she primarily runs the gift shop and helps with tours for guests.

The rest of the year, the gift shop functions as a pre-foaling area, an area for tight surveillance of horses about to give birth.

The youngest Clydesdale at the ranch, Justice, was born in September in a stall similar to one in which guests will be able to buy gifts.

After the barn is closed up for the holidays Dec. 30, staff will make a quick turnaround to revert the stalls back into areas for expectant mothers, as there are a few foals that are expected in late January and early February.

Horse-story In the Making:

The budweiser clydesdales.

budweiser barn tours

From the Prohibition era to Super Bowl commercials, there is perhaps nothing more iconic in Budweiser’s storied history than its team of Clydesdale horses. More than just a mascot, the Clydesdales have been an integral part of Anheuser-Busch for more than 80 years.

History of the Budweiser Clydesdales

In April 1933, August A. Busch, Jr. and Adolphus Busch III surprised their father, August A. Busch, Sr., with the gift of a six-horse Clydesdale hitch to commemorate the repeal of Prohibition of beer.

Realizing the marketing potential of a horse-drawn beer wagon, the company also arranged to have a second six-horse Clydesdale hitch sent to New York to mark the event. The Clydesdales drew a crowd of thousands on their way to the Empire State Building. After a small ceremony, a case of Budweiser was presented to former Governor Alfred E. Smith in appreciation of his years of service in the fight against Prohibition.

This hitch continued on a tour of New England and the Mid-Atlantic states, thrilling thousands, before stopping in Washington, D.C., in April 1933 to reenact the delivery of one of the first cases of Budweiser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

Shortly after the hitch was first introduced, the six-horse Clydesdale team increased to eight. On March 30, 1950, in commemoration of the opening of the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery, a Dalmatian was introduced as the Budweiser Clydesdales’ mascot. Now, a Dalmatian travels with each of the Clydesdale hitches.

The Clydesdales Today

Today, the Budweiser Clydesdales continue to be an enduring symbol of the brewer’s heritage, tradition and commitment to quality, making hundreds of appearances across the country each year.

To properly prepare the Clydesdales for their appearances, a team of dedicated handlers oversees their care. Expert groomers travel on the road with the hitch at least 10 months out of the year. Another team oversees their diet; each hitch horse will consume as much as 20 to 25 quarts of whole grains, minerals and vitamins, 50 to 60 pounds of hay, and up to 30 gallons of water on a warm day.

When it comes time to travel to an appearance, 10 horses; the famous red, white, and gold beer wagon; and other essential equipment are transported in three 50-foot tractor-trailers. Cameras mounted in the trailers are connected to monitors in the cabs that enable the drivers to keep a watchful eye on their precious cargo during transport. Air-cushioned suspension and thick rubber flooring in the trailers ease the rigors of traveling. The team stops each night at local stables so the “gentle giants” can rest.

The team also travels with hitch drivers, who endure a lengthy training process before they assume the prestigious role of a Budweiser Clydesdale Hitch Driver. Driving the combined 12 tons of wagon and horses requires expert skill and physical strength. The 40 pounds of lines held by the driver plus the tension of the horses pulling creates a weight of more than 75 pounds.

Presently, the Budweiser Clydesdales reside at the Anheuser-Busch breweries in St. Louis for public viewing. Visitors can also see the Clydesdales up-close at Warm Springs Ranch , the premier Budweiser Clydesdales breeding establishment in Boonville, Missouri. Both attractions are open seasonally.

When they’re not making appearances around the country, the Budweiser Clydesdales also continue to be marketing stalwarts for Anheuser-Busch. They first appeared in the Super Bowl in 1975, and have since appeared in countless Super Bowl commercials for the company.

Did you know?

- Each of the Clydesdales’ handcrafted harnesses and collars weigh approximately 130 pounds.

- The Budweiser Clydesdales are given short names, such as Duke, Mark and Bud, to make it easier for the driver to give commands to the horses during a performance.

- Budweiser Clydesdales’ horseshoes measure more than 20 inches from end to end and weigh about 5 pounds.

- Dalmatians were known as coach dogs because they ran between the wheels of coaches or carriages and were companions to the horses. Since the 1950s, Dalmatians have traveled with the Budweiser Clydesdales hitch, perched atop the wagon proudly seated next to the driver.

- The turn-of-the-century beer wagons have been meticulously restored and are kept in excellent condition. The wagons are equipped with two braking systems: a hydraulic pedal device that slows the vehicle for turns and downhill descents, and a hand-brake that locks the rear wheels when the wagon is at a halt.

All You Need To Know About The Budweiser Clydesdale Farm

History of the budweiser clydesdale

If you have ever seen a horse-drawn Budweiser parade and keenly want to know all about the Budweiser Clydesdale horses. If so, then yes, you have approached the right place!!!

The Budweiser Clydesdales are Clydesdale horses that the Anheuser-Busch Brewing Company uses for promotions and commercials. There are various “hitches” or teams of horses travelling across the U.S. and other countries. The Budweiser Clydesdale tour happens regularly and it can have an intense schedule. Still, they are kept only in their official residences at the company headquarters at the Anheuser-Busch brewery complex in St. Louis, Missouri, New Hampshire or, Merrimack.

At St. Louis, they are kept in a historical stable built-in 1885. Where eight horses are driven every time, but ten horses on each team are available to provide alternatives for the hitch if required. Also, Budweiser Clydesdale Commercials used as an animal hero for Budweiser beer, especially in super bowl advertising.

First Thing First

History of the Budweiser Clydesdales

History of the Budweiser Clydesdale

Adolphus Busch III and August A. Busch Jr. in 1933 surprised their father, August A. Busch, with the six-horse Clydesdale hitch and issued in memory of the repeal of Prohibition of Beer.

Recognizing the marketing value of a horse-drawn beer wagon, the company also arranged for a second six-horses hitch to be sent into New York to commemorate the event. Making their way to Empire State City, the Clydesdales drew the attention of thousands. After a ceremony, Budweiser presented a case to Governor Alfred E. Smith in appreciation of his many years of service in the fight against prohibition.

This diversion went on a journey to New England and the Mid- Atlantic states, thrilling thousands of people before stopping in Washington, D.C. in April 1933 to re-enact the delivery of the first cases of Budweiser to President Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The 6-horse Clydesdale squad rose to 8 soon after the first hitch was introduced. The Dalmatian was introduced as the mascot of the Budweiser Clydesdales on March 30, 1950, to celebrate the Anheuser-Busch Newark Brewery launch. Now, along with Clydesdale, a Dalmatian travels.

Opens in a new tab.

Realizing the publicity and promotional value of a horse beer-drawn wagon, Busch Sr. had the team sent by rail to New York City, which picked up the two cases of Budweiser beer at the New Jersey airport and delivered them to Al Smith, former governor of New York, and a key force in the repeal of prohibition. From there, the Clydesdales went on a tour to New England and the Mid-Atlantic States to provide President Franklin D. Roosevelt with a case of water to the White House.

Qualification

Qualification for a budweiser clydesdale

To be able to qualify for one of these hits a Budweiser must have a flat-talented, robust, shapely horse-like look, at least four years old, 18 hands at the groin, at least 72 inches, 183 cm, and weight between 1,800 and 2,300 pounds(820 to 1,140 kg). Moreover, any horse must have four white feet and a white blaze on its face (a reddish-brown coat with a black mane and tail). These quality Budweiser Clydesdale horses have quite a busy schedule so they need to be trained and produced to be the best they can be.

Budweiser Clydesdales Farm

A farm is a shelter for animals, and the same is for the Budweiser Clydesdales. Depending on the two important things, i.e., breeding and training Budweiser Clydesdale Farm are classified into Warm springs ranch and Grant’s farmhouse. Let’s have a look at each Budweiser Clydesdale farm location in detail:-

1) Warm Springs Ranch

Warm Springs Ranch budweiser clydesdale farm

Warm Springs Ranch is the biggest breeding facility for the Budweiser Clydesdales, having 300-plus acres, located in the rolling hills of Missouri, and is about 150 miles west of St. Louis. Established in 2008, a warm spring ranch has mare/stallion and a foaling barn, a veterinary laboratory, and 10 pastures. The farm is house to more than 70 Budweiser Clydesdales ranging from foal to stallions, and almost more than half of the herds are kept on the farm.

2) Grant’s Farmhouse

Grant’s Farmhouse Budweiser Clydesdale

Meet the world-renowned Budweiser Clydesdales at their official school “prep,” which is house to over 50 Clydesdales, aged between 6 months and 15 years or older The Budweiser Clydesdale Stables. At Grant’s Farmhouse, about 35 mares, stallions, and foals per year, with an average of 15 foals produced each year. Anheuser-Busch owns a total of about 250 Clydesdales across the United States.

It is one of the world’s largest herds of Clydesdale horses. Visitors can walk through an area where the majestic beasts rumble and play in pastures. They can also go into a stable where some of the horses are on display. Each horse has a brass plate inscribed with his name. The stables are of course spotlessly clean and new.

The Budweiser Clydesdale Stables

Traveling hitches.

The Clydesdales were initially transported via train. In 1940, cross-country travel by truck was introduced. Today, the travelling hitches are on the road for at least 10 months each year, based in St. Louis, Missouri, Merrimack, New Hampshire, and Fort Collins, Colorado. At St. Louis, numerous tours provide a visit to Budweiser Clydesdale Paddock and Stables. The first hitch to Clydesdale was in Merrimack, New Hampshire. Although horses do not live there anymore, stables are open to visitors. Fort Collins is the home for the West Coast Club at Clydesdales. They can be seen as part of a tour when the horses are not touring, and visitors can have a picture taken with them.

Each team has ten horses to ride. Eight are in harness at any one time when performing, and the other two horses provide alternates for the hitch as required. Many qualified handlers assist each team. Sometimes one trainer has a nighttime duty to care for the horses round the clock. With each hitch, transportation takes three 50-foot semis. Two carry the horses; the third gives a beer wagon with red, white and gold, and other stuff. The horses’ comfort is improved with “air-cushioned suspension and thick rubber flooring,” and cameras allow the drivers to watch the horses during transportation. The team stops at local stables every night.

Budweiser Clydesdales Super Bowl Commercials

Budweiser Clydesdale Superbowl commercial

Super Bowl commercials have produced many unforgettable stars over the years- the tiny Darth Vader, Mean Joe Greene, Danica Patrick, that creepy talking infant. Still, none of the things is more enduring and appealing than a team of Budweiser Clydesdale Commercials. Since the 1986 Super Bowl, where the Clydesdales trampled through the snow as a chorus chirped, “where you tell Bud you’ve said it all,” the Budweiser Clydesdales have been part of the big game.

In the 1991, ’92 and ’95 Super Bowls, the Clydesdales debuted. Still, the 1996 commercial depicted two teams of horses playing football in a snow-covered mountain meadow setting a new norm. Jeff Knapper, the general manager for Clydesdale operations at Anheuser-Busch, said a team of Clydesdales had practiced for several months near Jackson Hole, Wyo, to prepare for the commercial shoot. Horses were trained, first individually and then in groups, to make different movements.

Budweiser Clydesdale Commercials are also among the most famous and remembered — ranging from croaking frogs to puppies to football play at Clydesdales. Read on to know more about the 26 Super Bowl commercials:-

Figurine Collectables

1) Washington Scene- This glorious tribute to the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales world heritage recreates the historic moment when two Budweiser cases were delivered by the Clydesdales to the White House to celebrate the termination of the prohibition. This figure is repeated exhaustively in every aspect of this 18 “x 9” x 11 “image to maintain the historical moment in Clydesdale’s history.

2) Scottish Farmer- Scottish shepherd, Figurine, depicts that his Collett, Duffy, is ready as world-renowned Budweiser Clydesdale for a better and bigger future. The faithful farmer collie looks forward to his appraisal of Clydesdale mate. The cold-cast porcelain figurine is backed up by a beautifully built lush grass and authentically steeped stone fence with a dimension 7 inches x 4 1/2 “x 5 7/8 inches.

3) Getting shod – Figurine portrays the persistent care and attention to each Budweiser Clydesdale given as trainers, Tim and Jeff, prepare Deacon for his new shoes. This cold, porcelain cast figure preserves Clydesdale’s life from the wooden stall walls to the stable brick floor, which is beautifully crafted and hand-painted.

4) Braiding For Parade- A hand-painted cold-cast figure shows Dave and Eric handlers putting the ultimate touch on Baron’s parade uniform. Baron waits patiently, freshly washed, polished and fried, as his tail is twisted and his crumbs rolled because he knows he’ll soon be “on the float.” His dalmatian partner supervises the project.

5) Five-horse Hitch- This cold, cast handcrafted figure shows a unique five-horse wagon with its particular self hanging under the wagon’s bed. Anheuser-Busch used the drastic design of the wagon for training and show purposes. Five Clydesdales are waiting for drivers with their matching harnesses and the faithful Dalmatian.

6) Official horseshoe- This hand-painted Figurine describes that horseshoer ‘Tim’ leading the Clydesdale ‘Sir John’ Official Horseshoer truck, a 1953 replica truck. The current horseshoe in Clydesdales is a blacksmith of the 8th century, whose family has been shoeing Clydesdales from thirty-five to forty years.

7) Holiday scene- This hand-painted Figurine depicts a snowy scene with a snow-covered house and passing the popular World Budweiser Clydesdales. It includes snow-covered trees, a stone bridge, vacation decorations, and a finely detailed house.

8) The Bauernhof At Grant’s Farm – This Figurine depicts a Budweiser Clydesdale with an eight-horse hitch as it passes to the Grant’s Farm, a famous St. Louis destination, “Anheuser-Busch.” The farm building and the surrounding details in the area are recreated accurately.

9) Mare and Foal figurine- A bronze-finished porcelain hand painted by cold-cast was made in China. Figurine reveals the strong connection between her foal and Clydesdale’s mother. It shows a tender moment as the mother looks at the profile of her foal. Their shorts shine in their muscular frames with each curve, while their males gracefully cascade behind it as if they had a warm summer breeze.

10) Parade Dress Pals- This hand-painted bronze finished porcelain figurine was made in China. Clydesdale’s “JIM” and his friend in Dalmatian “BUD” are featured in Figurine’s parade dress.

History of the Farm and Family

Shannon and Karen Cobbs own and operate Grandview Clydesdales with their three sons in Ocala, Florida. They were both born and raised in the horse business and both have had Clydesdales their entire lives. Shannon was born in Indiana and raised in the midwest on a large agriculture farm where Clydesdales were just part of the day to day operations. Karen was born in Manitoba Canada and was part of a large family grain farm that always had horses and Clydesdales as well. So the million dollar question is how did Florida get in the picture? Shannon’s family has shipped hay to Florida to sell to horse farms for over 40 years and he spent much of his youth coming to Florida monthly with his parents and it always felt like home. Shannon’s grandparents had a large cattle operation in Bushnell Florida when he was young and the state just grew to be part of him. So with the hay operation and the horses it was an easy but big decision to move the horses and family to the Horse Capital of the World in 2013. Shannon and Karen decided in the winter of 2013 that we were going to start looking for property around Ocala, Florida. Finding the farm and purchasing it is another story in itself, but they found a farm that fit and couldn’t wait to make it their own. Relocating one of the largest Clydesdale breeding operations in the world has been a very interesting experience.

budweiser barn tours

The move from old farm to new farm was 1007 miles one way. Shannon has made so many trips back and forth, to move at the time over 60 head of Clydesdales and all that comes with that size of an operation. But don’t forget the family had to move as well…. It was honestly one of the biggest transitions they have endured. They have been in construction mode since 2013 and still are, but things are starting to come together.

We create it better.
